- 0:06Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:09Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Blazarre from Lazarren, Hello, everybody nailed it, joined us always.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Barre.
- 0:26Speaker 1: All right, everybody, Hello, we're back in the studio, back
- 0:30Speaker 1: in Foxborough. After let's just call what it is, Alex.
- 0:33Speaker 1: A pretty disappointing end to our trip to the super Bowl.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It was a fun trip though. We had a good Yuah.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's cool to cover the super Bowl.
- 0:40Speaker 3: You would have liked it to end on a little.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Bit maybe maybe, But that doesn't wipe out the the
- 0:47Speaker 1: first seven days of the trip that were very, very
- 0:50Speaker 1: fun until the game actually started on Sunday. But hello, everyone,
- 0:54Speaker 1: it's Evan Lazarre, it's Alice Barth, it's Alex behind the glass,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and we're in our new not new, but o. It's
- 1:02Speaker 1: called our off season time slot. So PU obviously goes
- 1:06Speaker 1: to two times a week in the off season, so
- 1:09Speaker 1: we slide right into this new to two time slot
- 1:12Speaker 1: on Wednesday.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Give me a little more awake, a little bit.
- 1:14Speaker 2: More awake, a little bit more in the middle of
- 1:16Speaker 2: the day. So all good things.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So this is where we'll be unless something else happens
- 1:22Speaker 1: that causes us to move this time. You can expect
- 1:25Speaker 1: us to be at this time twelve to two on Wednesdays, live,
- 1:29Speaker 1: moving forward until the we get back going in five
- 1:33Speaker 1: months or whatever that is. But for now, we have
- 1:37Speaker 1: a Super Bowl to unfortunately do an autopsy on that
- 1:41Speaker 1: we're gonna get to.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I have some big picture thoughts.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I got to get off my chest about the off
- 1:46Speaker 1: season and about this team and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Moving forward here as well, we will do the good,
- 1:52Speaker 1: the bad, the stuff that gets you beat. I'm gonna
- 1:55Speaker 1: be honest again, it was kind of hard to come
- 1:58Speaker 1: up with too many good It's like.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I got.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Two players, Yeah, two players played at a championship level
- 2:08Speaker 1: in the game on Sunday, and then I have some
- 2:11Speaker 1: like good butts, you know, like these guys were good,
- 2:15Speaker 1: but they probably would like to have a few plays back.
- 2:19Speaker 1: So then we'll get to all that good stuff as well.
- 2:21Speaker 1: In the second hour of the show, we'll take your
- 2:23Speaker 1: calls and emails will open show up, and we'll start
- 2:26Speaker 1: discussing this thing. But the big picture thought that I
- 2:28Speaker 1: wanted to start with, I have a couple so just
- 2:31Speaker 1: bear with me, everybody, because I got to get on
- 2:33Speaker 1: my soapbox and vent a little bit about all everything
- 2:36Speaker 1: that's happened both on Sunday and also what transpired in
- 2:40Speaker 1: the aftermath of them losing the Super Bowl.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I think the biggest place I want to start, you know.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I know there's gonna be a lot of questions, probably
- 2:49Speaker 1: starting today Alex on this show about the draft, about
- 2:53Speaker 1: free agency, about what's next.
- 2:55Speaker 2: You know, what should they do?
- 2:56Speaker 1: What's the plan in terms of names. I'm gonna be
- 3:00Speaker 1: totally honest with everybody. I have no freaking clue. So
- 3:04Speaker 1: don't don't sit here and ask me who they're drafting.
- 3:06Speaker 1: At thirty one on February eleventh, two days three days
- 3:10Speaker 1: after the super Bowl ended, I don't know.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I don't know. So I know that this is one
- 3:16Speaker 2: of those shows.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I know that that's what we do.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Yeah, And I promise you that starting next week and
- 3:21Speaker 1: then a certainly starting combine week, I'll have some names.
- 3:25Speaker 2: I'll have some takes.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I'm going to start diving into that film as soon
- 3:29Speaker 1: as my brain, like you know, gets back to normal
- 3:32Speaker 1: from this trip to the to the super Bowl. But
- 3:35Speaker 1: I'm not going to sit here today and tell you
- 3:37Speaker 1: that I have all the answers to those types of questions.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, I have some names, but do you remember
- 3:43Speaker 3: I think it was eighteen right when they won, and
- 3:45Speaker 3: Bill gets up to the podium and made the joke
- 3:46Speaker 3: about we're six weeks behind everybody else in the offseason.
- 3:49Speaker 3: We are six weeks he It wasn't kidding, Like I
- 3:51Speaker 3: got a couple names, But I'm definitely not where I
- 3:54Speaker 3: usually am with the draft at this point for sure.
- 3:57Speaker 3: I mean, that's kind of the plan for this is
- 3:59Speaker 3: the last Super Bowl reaction thing I'm doing. That's on
- 4:01Speaker 3: my calendar. Yeah, and I'm getting home from this and
- 4:03Speaker 3: then it's time to really start digging into that the last.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Couple of years and this is gonna, you know.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Whatever cool for us, right we got we were at
- 4:13Speaker 1: the Shrine Bowl a couple of years ago. That was
- 4:16Speaker 1: Bill's last year right as the coach. Then I've been
- 4:19Speaker 1: into the Senior Bowl two years in a row. I
- 4:22Speaker 1: have These are the drafts that I have never been
- 4:24Speaker 1: more prepared for drafts in my life than I was
- 4:26Speaker 1: the last couple And now I'm gonna never be as
- 4:29Speaker 1: unprepared for a draft as I am for this one.
- 4:31Speaker 1: So bear with us, bear with me in terms of
- 4:35Speaker 1: all the names that you guys are going to want
- 4:37Speaker 1: to talk about and throw at us and all that
- 4:40Speaker 1: kind of stuff. The other thing that you know, I
- 4:43Speaker 1: can't talk a big picture though, right and we can't
- 4:45Speaker 1: talk about off season plans and what this team should
- 4:48Speaker 1: do to get better and to get over the hump
- 4:51Speaker 1: and win the Super Bowl next year. And that's what
- 4:52Speaker 1: everybody's goal is. And of course they have a much
- 4:56Speaker 1: tougher schedule on paper next year, so they might be
- 4:59Speaker 1: a better team themselves, but their record is probably going
- 5:03Speaker 1: to be worse just reflective of the schedule, and so
- 5:05Speaker 1: they have to continue to get better.
- 5:07Speaker 2: They have to continue to stack talent on this team.
- 5:10Speaker 1: With that all being said, and I got a little
- 5:13Speaker 1: feisty about this yesterday on PU I don't want to
- 5:17Speaker 1: hear about wholesale changes to the roster. I don't want
- 5:20Speaker 1: to hear about the fact that they need a whole
- 5:23Speaker 1: new offensive line. I don't want to hear about the
- 5:26Speaker 1: fact that they have all these holes to fill. They
- 5:29Speaker 1: were just four quarters away from winning a championship. They lost,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and they lost handily, and there's reasons for that. We're
- 5:37Speaker 1: going to get to all of that. But let's not
- 5:39Speaker 1: lose sight of the fact that you have a Coach
- 5:42Speaker 1: of the Year, you have a quarterback was the runner
- 5:46Speaker 1: up for the MVP. You won seventeen games including playoffs
- 5:50Speaker 1: this season. This is not the same place this team
- 5:53Speaker 1: has been the last couple of off seasons where they
- 5:55Speaker 1: have to really turn over the entire roster.
- 6:00Speaker 3: It's unmanageable to do list this time around.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and so there's needs, there's holes, But like Mike
- 6:06Speaker 1: Rabels said yesterday, they're building a program. That program is
- 6:11Speaker 1: being built a lot like a house. And to me
- 6:13Speaker 1: right now, Alex, I don't know how you feel about it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: They have a foundation to the home. They have walls,
- 6:20Speaker 1: they have a ceiling, they have a roof over their head.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Now we're starting to remodel the inside. Right now is
- 6:27Speaker 1: when you get the fancy granite countertop and the sub
- 6:30Speaker 1: zero appliances and the nice couch and the flat screen
- 6:36Speaker 1: TV on the wall and all that different kind of stuff.
- 6:40Speaker 1: That's all the things that we're talking about this offseason.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I understand everybody is really upset about how the game
- 6:46Speaker 1: went and disappointed about how the game went, but we're
- 6:49Speaker 1: not talking about them turning over fifty percent.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Of the roster again like they had to do last
- 6:54Speaker 2: off season.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So I just want to put that out there because
- 6:58Speaker 1: you know, yesterday, like I said, we had a lot
- 7:00Speaker 1: of calls, a lot of emails about they need five
- 7:04Speaker 1: new starters on the offensive line, They need four new
- 7:07Speaker 1: starters on the offensive line. They need to move this
- 7:09Speaker 1: guy to left guard, they need to move this guy
- 7:11Speaker 1: to center, and the need to sign this and sign
- 7:13Speaker 1: that they need some upgrades in certain areas. Let's not
- 7:18Speaker 1: lose sight of the fact that all of us, let's
- 7:21Speaker 1: say at Sunday, I was going to say three because
- 7:24Speaker 1: of the time change Sunday at six pm, we all
- 7:27Speaker 1: thought that they were a pretty good team, right, and
- 7:29Speaker 1: then the next four hours unfolded and it didn't go
- 7:32Speaker 1: so well.
- 7:33Speaker 2: So that's my thought on that.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I have some other thoughts on the game as well,
- 7:38Speaker 1: just the last thing, and then you know, feel free
- 7:40Speaker 1: to jump in. There's one question though, that I'm going
- 7:44Speaker 1: to hold their feet to the fire with a little
- 7:46Speaker 1: bit about this team. And I'm looking at Mike Rabel
- 7:50Speaker 1: and I'm looking at Josh McDaniels, and I hope in
- 7:52Speaker 1: two weeks when We talked to Mike Rabel and Elliott
- 7:55Speaker 1: Wolf at the combine. They have some sort of answer
- 7:59Speaker 1: for this question. The question is what happened to the
- 8:03Speaker 1: offense in the playoffs? Why did the offense go from
- 8:08Speaker 1: twenty eight twenty nine points a game number two in
- 8:11Speaker 1: the league during the regular season to sixteen point eight
- 8:16Speaker 1: points per game in the playoffs, a twelve point decrease
- 8:20Speaker 1: from the playoffs to the regular season.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Was it injuries to Campbell, injuries to Drake May? Was
- 8:26Speaker 2: it level of competition? Was it young players growing pains?
- 8:30Speaker 3: Was it scheme?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Was it talent? They have to answer that question.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And I remember in twenty twenty one, Bill Belichick got
- 8:39Speaker 1: to the podium after they got their doors blown off
- 8:41Speaker 1: of them by Buffalo in the playoffs, and he said,
- 8:44Speaker 1: we need to decide was this a bad night or
- 8:47Speaker 1: is this who we are? And I think for this team,
- 8:50Speaker 1: they need to decide was it which offense is the
- 8:54Speaker 1: real offense? The regular season offense or the playoff offense?
- 8:58Speaker 1: Because if they feel like it's more towards the playoff
- 9:00Speaker 1: offense and they have.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Some work to do.
- 9:02Speaker 1: If they feel like the regular season offense is really
- 9:05Speaker 1: who they were and in the playoffs circumstances, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 1: whether great defenses, injuries, injuries, young players, and key spots
- 9:15Speaker 1: playing in big time games for the first time.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Was it all of that? And I hate to call
- 9:20Speaker 2: him excuses, but kind of excuses or was it?
- 9:24Speaker 1: They are short in talent and key areas you know,
- 9:27Speaker 1: offensive line, wide receiver, playmaker or whatever you want to
- 9:30Speaker 1: call it. So that's the one question that I think
- 9:32Speaker 1: needs to get answered. But I don't want to lose
- 9:34Speaker 1: sight of the fact of all the things that they
- 9:36Speaker 1: accomplished at the same time, right.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I think it's a little bit of all of it,
- 9:39Speaker 3: you know, a little bit of the injuries, a little
- 9:41Speaker 3: bit of the opponent, a little bit themselves, a little
- 9:43Speaker 3: bit of the weather. They definitely need to get better
- 9:45Speaker 3: on offense. But I'm with you, like I don't want
- 9:47Speaker 3: them to overreact to one game. I think you factor
- 9:50Speaker 3: it in and it's important and that's the best opponent
- 9:52Speaker 3: you played all year, so you want to be able
- 9:54Speaker 3: to live up to that level. But Drake may was
- 9:55Speaker 3: playing with an injured shoulder, Will Campbell's playing with torn
- 9:58Speaker 3: ligament in his knee. You know, who knows how banged
- 10:01Speaker 3: up some of those other guys were, Yeah, I don't
- 10:04Speaker 3: think you start from scratch or anything like that. I
- 10:06Speaker 3: think that would be a massive overreaction.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I definitely agree.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And you know, that's a tough question to answer because
- 10:13Speaker 1: only they really know the details of all these different things. Right,
- 10:17Speaker 1: How how injured were the injured guys? You know, how
- 10:21Speaker 1: injured was Will Campbell's knee? How injured was Drake May's shoulder?
- 10:25Speaker 1: You know, he's said that his shoulder injury occurred in
- 10:29Speaker 1: the third quarter of the AFC Championship game on the
- 10:32Speaker 1: hit that doctor Chow highlighted.
- 10:34Speaker 3: On Twitter, and he made I know that that him
- 10:38Speaker 3: and Vrabel had talked about it just being things over
- 10:40Speaker 3: the course of the year. He kind of said yesterday
- 10:41Speaker 3: like that was an unfortunate hit and unfortunate time. Right,
- 10:44Speaker 3: it does sound like that hit did something.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So if that hit was when it truly happened, then
- 10:50Speaker 1: that doesn't explain the Chargers and Texans play in Broncos
- 10:53Speaker 1: games really like maybe the fourth quarter of the Broncos game,
- 10:57Speaker 1: but not the first half. So there's still some bad
- 11:00Speaker 1: football in there from Drake May and the offense pre
- 11:04Speaker 1: shoulder injury in the playoffs, So why did they get there?
- 11:08Speaker 4: Why?
- 11:08Speaker 2: Why was that there? You know, what happened in the
- 11:10Speaker 2: playoffs to them?
- 11:12Speaker 1: As for the game itself, and I have a lot
- 11:14Speaker 1: of thoughts on this, you know, in terms of I've
- 11:19Speaker 1: heard a lot of they just got beat they just
- 11:23Speaker 1: got beat by a better team, And to some extent,
- 11:26Speaker 1: I'm willing to accept that.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I'm willing to agree with that line of thinking.
- 11:31Speaker 1: It's definitely let's see the forest for the trees, right, Like,
- 11:34Speaker 1: let's not lose sight of the fact that Seattle was
- 11:37Speaker 1: just a better team. But one wouldn't make for a
- 11:41Speaker 1: great show if I just said they just won, I
- 11:43Speaker 1: just lost to a better team.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Seattle is just better.
- 11:46Speaker 1: We can just wrap We can just wrap the show
- 11:48Speaker 1: up now, right and call it a day, if that's
- 11:50Speaker 1: all we think. I would also say that I thought,
- 11:54Speaker 1: watching back the offense, that there were opportunities not a
- 12:00Speaker 1: I'm not a ton I'm not talking about you know,
- 12:02Speaker 1: a dozen plays, but let's call it five or six
- 12:05Speaker 1: plays where there were opportunities to make plays down the
- 12:08Speaker 1: field in the passing game, that if a handful of
- 12:12Speaker 1: those plays hit and go in a different direction, especially
- 12:15Speaker 1: when the game was still you know, six nothing twelve nothing,
- 12:19Speaker 1: nine to nothing early on in the game, before it
- 12:21Speaker 1: kind of got away from them, this game would have
- 12:23Speaker 1: been a lot different.
- 12:25Speaker 2: And I'm hard on coaches. I am. I'm hard on
- 12:31Speaker 2: Bill Belichick. I was hard on Girodmeo.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I'm going to be hard on Mike Rabel and Josh
- 12:36Speaker 1: McDaniels because I expect the coaching to have the players
- 12:40Speaker 1: prepared and to have sound game plans and to be
- 12:43Speaker 1: ready to go against the best of the best. And
- 12:46Speaker 1: Mike McDonald is the best of the best on the
- 12:48Speaker 1: defensive side of the ball. And I expect McDaniels because
- 12:51Speaker 1: I respect the heck out of him and I respect
- 12:55Speaker 1: his acumen, his ability. He's a great offensive coordinator. I
- 12:58Speaker 1: expect him to be able to go toe to toe
- 13:01Speaker 1: with a guy like Mike McDonald. And I thought in
- 13:04Speaker 1: this game there was just some really perplexing game plan
- 13:08Speaker 1: decisions and play calling decisions by Josh McDaniels that led
- 13:13Speaker 1: to the offense not just having a bad day, but
- 13:16Speaker 1: having like a catastrophically bad day, right, And maybe there
- 13:19Speaker 1: was a middle ground there where if the coaching kind
- 13:22Speaker 1: of props it up just a little bit, they could
- 13:24Speaker 1: have had a mediocre day that would have kept them
- 13:28Speaker 1: in the game instead of what we saw on Sunday night.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So I want to get into the particulars of that,
- 13:34Speaker 1: But what did you just think of McDaniels the coaching
- 13:38Speaker 1: in this game, Because I also thought there were some
- 13:40Speaker 1: things that Mike Rabel, just from a game management standpoint,
- 13:43Speaker 1: that he did that were a little bit head scratching
- 13:46Speaker 1: as well. Knocked down for the two there and yeah,
- 13:49Speaker 1: you know, punting on fourth and one, you know, down
- 13:52Speaker 1: twelfth to nothing, timeouts before halftime were kind of a
- 13:56Speaker 1: little bit wonky.
- 13:57Speaker 2: It just did not feel like the Patriots coach this
- 14:00Speaker 2: game very well.
- 14:01Speaker 3: No, it didn't. I'd say to McDaniels. My big critique
- 14:04Speaker 3: there is I don't think you could win this game
- 14:08Speaker 3: being a one dimensional run team against Seattle. Yeah, they
- 14:11Speaker 3: were having some success. I get they didn't want to
- 14:13Speaker 3: test the run defense of Seattle too much, but mixing
- 14:16Speaker 3: that in a little more, there was like a third
- 14:18Speaker 3: and five draw when it felt like they were picking
- 14:20Speaker 3: up a little momentum that halted it. Yeah, some of
- 14:22Speaker 3: the game management stuff, the time out usage, not going
- 14:24Speaker 3: for two there at the end. This was not like
- 14:28Speaker 3: the coaching was part of this too. It's not like
- 14:29Speaker 3: the players just came out flat, you know, and couldn't
- 14:32Speaker 3: execute what appeared to be a good game plan. I
- 14:34Speaker 3: think everybody had a hand in this.
- 14:36Speaker 1: It was weird because I just can't really explain the
- 14:41Speaker 1: math of the not going for two.
- 14:42Speaker 2: So you're down, So I tell you what it is.
- 14:45Speaker 1: But the difference between scoring thirteen and being down thirteen
- 14:48Speaker 1: and being down twelve you still need two touchdowns.
- 14:51Speaker 3: I'll tell you what it is. Because I've heard this
- 14:52Speaker 3: and this. You're gonna roll your eyes at this, and
- 14:54Speaker 3: I'm kind of sort of with you on this. A
- 14:56Speaker 3: little bit I have heard and I actually let me say,
- 14:59Speaker 3: I don't know for sure this is what it is. Yeah,
- 15:01Speaker 3: but I have heard some coaches at different levels talk
- 15:06Speaker 3: about when it's like you're behind for most of the
- 15:12Speaker 3: game and you're really spinning your wheels, you can't get
- 15:14Speaker 3: anything going. You score, just kick the extra points. You
- 15:17Speaker 3: keep the momentum right, you score that touchdown, you're feeling
- 15:20Speaker 3: good about yourself. If you then go out and get
- 15:21Speaker 3: blown up on a two point play, any momentum you
- 15:24Speaker 3: had is lost. So that's in the past. How I've
- 15:28Speaker 3: heard that decision defended. Is that Look, we got in
- 15:30Speaker 3: the end zone. We just wanted to feel good about
- 15:33Speaker 3: that and we didn't want to like kind of have
- 15:35Speaker 3: that that feeling for the offense suddenly ripped away on
- 15:38Speaker 3: the two point play. That's I've heard it defended in
- 15:40Speaker 3: the past. I don't think that's a spot where that
- 15:43Speaker 3: defense makes sense.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I hear what you're saying.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And I think Rabel has talked a lot about like
- 15:48Speaker 1: sudden changes in momentum, like when things are going Now,
- 15:52Speaker 1: this game wasn't going their way.
- 15:53Speaker 3: So that's why I think it was such a steep hill.
- 15:57Speaker 3: Ye ye, how to do it? And I believe in
- 15:59Speaker 3: moment to them like I'm just makes you nerds, I
- 16:02Speaker 3: understand the human element.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I just the part is that there's no downside because
- 16:06Speaker 1: if you if you don't get it, then you're down thirteen.
- 16:09Speaker 3: So you still need to touch the downside as you
- 16:11Speaker 3: lose the momentum. The offense is feeling good, they got
- 16:13Speaker 3: the ball in the end zone, and like if it
- 16:15Speaker 3: goes bad, right, if you take it goes really bad,
- 16:17Speaker 3: you take a sack, you get picked off. Whatever you do,
- 16:21Speaker 3: now you're kind of you know, the quarterback, the line
- 16:24Speaker 3: maybe they're not.
- 16:24Speaker 2: The numbers don't make any sense.
- 16:26Speaker 3: I'm just saying that that's how i've heard it defending. Okay,
- 16:28Speaker 3: but if they I don't agree, and that spot you
- 16:30Speaker 3: go for two. I don't think that that defense makes
- 16:32Speaker 3: sense in that situation. But I'm telling you how it makes.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Sense when you're leading in the game, and maybe if
- 16:39Speaker 1: you go for two it makes it like a sixteen
- 16:41Speaker 1: point game instead of a fifteen point game. But you
- 16:43Speaker 1: don't want any sudden changes of momentum where if they
- 16:47Speaker 1: get a two point conversion, stop now all of a sudden, their.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Defense they're buzzing. Alon.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it's buzzing a little bit.
- 16:53Speaker 4: This game.
- 16:54Speaker 1: They were down nineteen to six, so they're down thirteen points.
- 16:58Speaker 1: A two point conversion makes it a field goal touchdown.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Again, it was a mistake. I'm just telling you. You're
- 17:04Speaker 3: you're wondering why they did it, Okay. I don't know
- 17:06Speaker 3: that that's exactly why, But I've heard that defense given
- 17:09Speaker 3: in similar situations.
- 17:09Speaker 1: In the past, and I understand this is not why
- 17:12Speaker 1: they lost the game. But I'm just trying to outline,
- 17:16Speaker 1: well the different decisions that I thought.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Later where they really didn't need it right, So there
- 17:21Speaker 3: was that one to say I did it backwards right.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It didn't make any sense. The things that I really
- 17:27Speaker 1: feel like though lost the game. Just to go back
- 17:29Speaker 1: to Josh McDaniels in the offense a little bit, I
- 17:32Speaker 1: think the number one thing on the list that I'm
- 17:35Speaker 1: not going to rattle off a couple of different things,
- 17:37Speaker 1: but this is by far the number one thing. They
- 17:39Speaker 1: went into this game without a real plan of how
- 17:42Speaker 1: to handle pressure, and like, I just don't understand that
- 17:45Speaker 1: because I I respect McDaniels so much. Like I said earlier,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I'm just shocked that he went into this game against one.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Even though they don't blitz at.
- 17:53Speaker 1: A high volume, they are a very very good blitzing
- 17:56Speaker 1: defense when they do blitz. So this had to have
- 17:59Speaker 1: been something that they were looking at and thinking about
- 18:02Speaker 1: a lot. And there were just too many times where
- 18:05Speaker 1: Seattle brought pressure and there was just no viable answer
- 18:10Speaker 1: for Drake May Like, there's just three receivers running vertical
- 18:14Speaker 1: routes down the field against all against pressure, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 1: significant pressure that Seattle's bringing through, you know the B
- 18:21Speaker 1: gap mostly with those DV blitzes. He's got no hot
- 18:25Speaker 1: he doesn't have enough guys to block the blitz so
- 18:27Speaker 1: they can't just block it and hold it up. You know,
- 18:29Speaker 1: he was left without enough blockers and without hot like
- 18:32Speaker 1: way too often. Like that's not a way that you
- 18:34Speaker 1: can live.
- 18:36Speaker 5: You know.
- 18:36Speaker 1: In the NFL, you either need to solve the problem
- 18:39Speaker 1: one way or another. Either you put an extra blocker
- 18:41Speaker 1: in there and you go seven man pass protection to
- 18:44Speaker 1: block if they bring seven, or you go six man
- 18:47Speaker 1: pass pro. But you like sneak the running back out
- 18:49Speaker 1: or something like that, and there's an answer. There's a slant,
- 18:52Speaker 1: there's a little hook route, you know, behind the blitz.
- 18:54Speaker 1: There's something of that nature. And I keep going back
- 18:57Speaker 1: to one of the first third downs of the game,
- 19:00Speaker 1: as a third and nine right over midfield. They had
- 19:02Speaker 1: moved the ball a little bit at this point on
- 19:04Speaker 1: their or their opening drive, and Seattle brought cover zero.
- 19:07Speaker 1: They brought it all out pressure. Two guys off the
- 19:10Speaker 1: edges come out in pressure and the Patriots just have
- 19:13Speaker 1: three guys running vertically down the field and they have
- 19:16Speaker 1: nobody to block. Devin Witherspoon coming off the edge and
- 19:20Speaker 1: he just comes in and is immediately on top of
- 19:22Speaker 1: Drake May, and Drake May ends up having to throw
- 19:24Speaker 1: the ball away. So we can talk a little bit
- 19:27Speaker 1: about Drake May there. You know, maybe it's him recognizing
- 19:30Speaker 1: it pre snap, him changing the cadence, you know, to
- 19:34Speaker 1: be able to pick up that they might be blitzing
- 19:36Speaker 1: and tip off that they might be blitzing. You know,
- 19:38Speaker 1: those different types of things this offense. Typically, when you
- 19:43Speaker 1: hear people talk about this offense, whether it's Tom Brady
- 19:46Speaker 1: or you know, our friend Brian Hoyer or whatever, the
- 19:49Speaker 1: onus is on the quarterback that gets you out of.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Bad plays before the ball is snap. That's the kind
- 19:54Speaker 2: of offense that they operate.
- 19:56Speaker 1: They operate an offense that at the line of scrimmage,
- 19:58Speaker 1: you get to the line of scrimmage the survey of
- 20:00Speaker 1: the defense. If there's problems, you have tools in your
- 20:03Speaker 1: toolbolts to go out and solve it. So is that
- 20:06Speaker 1: a young quarterback just getting got by a really good defense.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Is that Josh McDaniel's not giving Drake May the proper
- 20:13Speaker 1: tools to solve problems like cover zero and pressure and
- 20:17Speaker 1: things like that.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I don't know the answer to that question. Only they do.
- 20:21Speaker 1: But the problem is is that this happened way too much.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Seattle kept on bringing pressure. They kept on bringing the
- 20:28Speaker 1: same types of pressures over and over again, and they
- 20:31Speaker 1: kept getting home and there was no answer for Drake
- 20:34Speaker 1: May whatsoever. And if you look at it on the film,
- 20:37Speaker 1: like especially that first one with Pop, Douglas is running.
- 20:40Speaker 2: The deep post, He's open on the deep post for
- 20:43Speaker 2: a big play.
- 20:44Speaker 1: But they didn't leave Hunter Henry into pass block, so
- 20:47Speaker 1: there's nobody to block Devin Witherspoon. The other solution to it,
- 20:50Speaker 1: if you're not gonna checked in the protection to have
- 20:53Speaker 1: Hunter Henry block somebody would have been just for Pop
- 20:56Speaker 1: to run like a slant or something like that right
- 20:59Speaker 1: behind the blitz, you know, like he did against Houston
- 21:02Speaker 1: for instance, and he catches the ball and runs in
- 21:04Speaker 1: for a touchdown.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Right.
- 21:05Speaker 2: So there just was not enough. They didn't handle the
- 21:09Speaker 2: blitz well.
- 21:10Speaker 1: At all pre snap post snap, there was no answers
- 21:13Speaker 1: to it whatsoever. That, to me, before we get into
- 21:16Speaker 1: any of the other minutia, was the biggest issue with
- 21:19Speaker 1: this game plan.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I'm with you, and maybe caught him off guards healed
- 21:21Speaker 3: and blitz a ton this year. I don't know what
- 21:23Speaker 3: it was. And it's not like they Yeah, I mean,
- 21:27Speaker 3: they didn't really have plans for it, and Seattle kind
- 21:30Speaker 3: of kept hitting things that were working, hitting buttons that
- 21:32Speaker 3: were working, and the Patriots can come up with an
- 21:34Speaker 3: answer for it.
- 21:35Speaker 2: So you mentioned the other thing that you know, you
- 21:37Speaker 2: just mentioned was about the run game.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And I argued a little bit with our boy Paul
- 21:41Speaker 1: about this yesterday because he was saying, well, they only
- 21:44Speaker 1: averaged three yards to carry against this defense. Like, as
- 21:47Speaker 1: long as you're getting positive yards in the run game, like,
- 21:50Speaker 1: that's sort of what you have to do. So a
- 21:53Speaker 1: lot of these numbers are, I'll admit, are a little
- 21:56Speaker 1: bit inflated by the fourth quarter because in the fourth
- 21:58Speaker 1: quarter the right it's a blowout. But in this game,
- 22:03Speaker 1: Seattle played fifty three percent of the game in dime defense,
- 22:06Speaker 1: fifty three percent of the game in six defensive backs
- 22:10Speaker 1: dime you know, six TV's on the field. They also
- 22:13Speaker 1: played the game sixty two percent of the time, this
- 22:15Speaker 1: is just what they do. But they play the game
- 22:17Speaker 1: sixty two percent of the time in split safety defense
- 22:21Speaker 1: as well, so they're playing with five or six defensive
- 22:24Speaker 1: backs on the field, they're playing with two high safeties.
- 22:26Speaker 1: And the Patriots only ran the ball thirteen times. Thirteen times, Yeah,
- 22:31Speaker 1: despite the fact that Seattle was basically sitting there begging
- 22:34Speaker 1: them to try to run the football. Not to mention,
- 22:38Speaker 1: although some of that stats is inflated by the fourth quarter,
- 22:41Speaker 1: this game really wasn't out of hand until the fourth quarter.
- 22:44Speaker 3: And I wonder if they, again I kind of said
- 22:47Speaker 3: this earlier, did they just come in saying like, we
- 22:51Speaker 3: can't test this run defense. And I get why they
- 22:54Speaker 3: were aware of it, but I feel like at a
- 22:56Speaker 3: certain point you have to alternate. You have to not altered,
- 23:00Speaker 3: you have to go off that and say, all right,
- 23:03Speaker 3: we are moving the ball a little bit on the ground.
- 23:04Speaker 3: We got to mix that in more. Maybe they didn't
- 23:06Speaker 3: come in with the most detailed run plan, but I
- 23:08Speaker 3: do think that there was a moment to pivot to it.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Yeah, because you mentioned it earlier.
- 23:13Speaker 1: You have to have balance against the team like Seattle
- 23:16Speaker 1: if you are only dropping back to pass. And they
- 23:19Speaker 1: only called like seven play action plays in this game too,
- 23:22Speaker 1: because they weren't running the ball, so like, you know,
- 23:24Speaker 1: they're not gonna start spamming play action when you're not
- 23:27Speaker 1: even trying to run the ball at all. So they
- 23:30Speaker 1: all they were just dropped back to pass, drop back
- 23:33Speaker 1: pass drop, back pass drop that pass. When you do
- 23:35Speaker 1: that against a great pass defense and in a great
- 23:38Speaker 1: a great pressure defense up front, this is what you're
- 23:41Speaker 1: gonna get. You're gonna get a forty five percent pressure
- 23:43Speaker 1: eight in your quarterback running for his life the entire game.
- 23:46Speaker 2: They kind of reaped what they sowed there.
- 23:48Speaker 1: And the last point that I'll make in that vein,
- 23:51Speaker 1: they played eighty percent of this game with three wide
- 23:53Speaker 1: receivers on the field, eighty eleven personnel. They only called
- 23:58Speaker 1: six offensive line one time, and it was their best
- 24:01Speaker 1: play of the game probably, and they never went back
- 24:04Speaker 1: to it one time. They called six offensive line, so
- 24:06Speaker 1: they stayed in their own light personnel, they didn't run
- 24:10Speaker 1: the ball, and Seattle put their five and six defensive
- 24:13Speaker 1: back packages on the field. They started dialing up blitzes,
- 24:16Speaker 1: they started dialing up pressure. What I'm getting at with
- 24:19Speaker 1: all these things. Oh and they were playing two high safeties.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Let's not forget that part. What I'm trying to get
- 24:24Speaker 1: to with all of this is that they just let
- 24:26Speaker 1: Seattle play their game like this is exactly how Seattle
- 24:30Speaker 1: wants to play defense. This is their type of defense,
- 24:33Speaker 1: this is their type of game, and they just played
- 24:36Speaker 1: right into their hands with it all of the different
- 24:38Speaker 1: game plan elements that they use. They did not run
- 24:41Speaker 1: a lot of twenty one personnel in this game. They
- 24:44Speaker 1: didn't run a lot of six TOZ line in this game.
- 24:46Speaker 1: They didn't run any empty in this game, despite the
- 24:49Speaker 1: fact that Seattle was bringing pressure from everywhere. If you
- 24:51Speaker 1: spread the field out and empty, then Drake may can
- 24:54Speaker 1: see the pressure coming and he's got five ye to
- 24:57Speaker 1: try to get the ball out.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Of his hands.
- 25:00Speaker 1: They didn't do any of the things that you know
- 25:03Speaker 1: you have to do against the defense like this, and
- 25:05Speaker 1: they basically just lived in long down and distance on
- 25:08Speaker 1: third down and just let Seattle do what they do
- 25:10Speaker 1: and guess what, they couldn't move the ball. They had
- 25:13Speaker 1: what eighty yards in the first three quarters of the game.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So I was just really stunned up that they just
- 25:19Speaker 1: they basically said, like, we think that we can actually
- 25:22Speaker 1: beat you at your own game, and I just don't
- 25:24Speaker 1: think that they had the horses to try to take
- 25:27Speaker 1: that approach to the game.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Yeah. I don't know if they were trying to do
- 25:30Speaker 3: things that would catch Seattle off guard or they were
- 25:32Speaker 3: afraid of getting too much right at Seattle's strength. But
- 25:35Speaker 3: like they psyched themselves out a little too much, I
- 25:38Speaker 3: think with what that defense was, and they didn't just
- 25:40Speaker 3: lean on what they do well. And I think if
- 25:42Speaker 3: they'd done that a little more, I don't know that
- 25:44Speaker 3: changes the result, but they would have had a little
- 25:46Speaker 3: more success on play to play basis. Just we've talked
- 25:48Speaker 3: about this. You can't because you're facing great team doesn't
- 25:51Speaker 3: mean you can reinvent yourself. You have your strength and
- 25:53Speaker 3: you have your tendencies for a reason. You don't want
- 25:56Speaker 3: to be overly predictable. But I do think that you know,
- 25:59Speaker 3: you still have to do what you do well, even
- 26:01Speaker 3: if you're worry about the opponent taking it away yourself
- 26:03Speaker 3: to try it.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so they played right into Seattle's hands. I actually
- 26:08Speaker 1: really thought that even though they hadn't hit any real
- 26:11Speaker 1: explosive runs. I think Henderson had the long at like
- 26:14Speaker 1: nine yards on that little toss play. Even though they
- 26:17Speaker 1: hadn't hit any explosive runs, I did think they were
- 26:20Speaker 1: like kind of chipping away at it in the run
- 26:22Speaker 1: game where it was like three yards, five yards, six yards,
- 26:26Speaker 1: four yards, and it was you know, you're not gonna
- 26:28Speaker 1: inflate your yards per carry number when you're only rushing
- 26:31Speaker 1: for you know, three four yards at a time. But
- 26:34Speaker 1: what you are doing is first and ten becomes second
- 26:37Speaker 1: and seven, second and seven becomes third and two, third
- 26:39Speaker 1: and two becomes first down, which is what was what happened.
- 26:42Speaker 1: On the opening drive. They had a six yard run
- 26:44Speaker 1: by Remondre Stevenson on first down. They had a two
- 26:47Speaker 1: yard run by Ramondre Stevenson on second down, and then
- 26:50Speaker 1: a little check down in the flat tur Remandre Stevenson
- 26:52Speaker 1: for a first down.
- 26:53Speaker 2: And they were ahead of schedule.
- 26:55Speaker 1: They were staying ahead of the chains by passing on
- 26:58Speaker 1: first down, by drop back passing. They just got themselves
- 27:01Speaker 1: into all these advantageous situations for Seattle to start dialing
- 27:05Speaker 1: up pressure, and that's.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Exactly what the Seahawks did. So I was really disappointed
- 27:09Speaker 2: with that.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Glad I got that out of my off my chest,
- 27:12Speaker 1: because I've been thinking about that for two straight days.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I just that was beyond frustrating. I do want to
- 27:18Speaker 2: talk about some of the things that.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Went well in this game that weren't a lot, but
- 27:22Speaker 1: there was a couple of players I think deserves some flowers,
- 27:24Speaker 1: deserved some love from this game.
- 27:26Speaker 2: So let's get to the good and the bad and
- 27:28Speaker 2: the stuff that gets to beat.
- 27:30Speaker 1: And I will start with the two goods that I
- 27:32Speaker 1: have on my list, and that is Christian Goanzalez and
- 27:35Speaker 1: Craig Woodson. Yes, who both were fantastic in this game.
- 27:38Speaker 1: And I would say basically the reason why this game
- 27:41Speaker 1: was close for a time being, you know, and they
- 27:44Speaker 1: were within shouting distance going into the second half because
- 27:47Speaker 1: of those two players. Craig Woodson's ascension is really cool
- 27:51Speaker 1: to see. He had six run stuffs in this game,
- 27:55Speaker 1: had a couple of passes, defense, had a hurry blitzing,
- 27:58Speaker 1: you know, blitz hurry as well. He was all over
- 28:02Speaker 1: the field. He was flying all over the field. The
- 28:04Speaker 1: run game stuff was phenomenal. I mean that tackle on
- 28:07Speaker 1: Rashija heat on that end around was just next level legit.
- 28:11Speaker 1: They got a player here, They got a legit player here.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I was dead wrong about this. I think a lot
- 28:15Speaker 1: of the draft pundits were pretty low on Craig Woodson too,
- 28:19Speaker 1: and they were dead wrong about it.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Myself included.
- 28:22Speaker 1: They have a I think they did safe to say
- 28:25Speaker 1: that Craig Woodson is at least a starting caliber safety
- 28:28Speaker 1: for them moving forward. Yes, and maybe even better like
- 28:30Speaker 1: maybe he's an impact safety for them next year.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, if this is where he's starting, we'll
- 28:34Speaker 3: see what the year two leap looks like. But he
- 28:36Speaker 3: was their best rookie this year, and he played a
- 28:40Speaker 3: high level and kept that going in the Super Bowl,
- 28:42Speaker 3: and again was tough matchup for him personally, not just
- 28:45Speaker 3: the entire team. So encourage what I saw from him,
- 28:47Speaker 3: and encouraged by what I saw from Christian ZoZ Pay
- 28:49Speaker 3: the guy that's simple, yep.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I mean the some of the fills that Craig Woodson had,
- 28:55Speaker 1: you know, running the alley like they were playing those
- 28:57Speaker 1: split safety quarters looks against two by two formations, a
- 29:01Speaker 1: lot of palms or quarters coverage, and they would hand
- 29:04Speaker 1: it off and Kenneth Walker would try to bounce and
- 29:06Speaker 1: Craig Woodson was like right there, you know, waiting for him.
- 29:09Speaker 1: And that's hard to do to come from like eight
- 29:12Speaker 1: nine ten yards off the ball and fill with that
- 29:15Speaker 1: kind of aggressiveness and then get a really good running
- 29:18Speaker 1: back on the ground like Kenneth Walker. That's impressive. I mean,
- 29:22Speaker 1: it was a really good game from Woodson. Gonzales excellent,
- 29:26Speaker 1: just absolutely excellent, elite Elite three, just high level pass breakups.
- 29:32Speaker 1: I posted the one last night on Shaheed the deep post.
- 29:37Speaker 1: I can't really undersell how hard of a play that is.
- 29:43Speaker 1: You know, he's bailing in cover three. They kind of
- 29:45Speaker 1: rotate the safeties a little bit, so the post is
- 29:47Speaker 1: late to the post because of their trying to disguise it.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And they have one of the fastest receivers in the
- 29:53Speaker 1: league taking off on you on a deep post when
- 29:55Speaker 1: you're out leverage, and he just catches up to the
- 29:57Speaker 1: play and makes the play. Now, I had some people
- 30:00Speaker 1: hurting me that, like Sam Donald could have made a
- 30:02Speaker 1: better throw. Sam Donald threw the ball fifty five yards
- 30:04Speaker 1: in the air, Like, I don't know, I don't know
- 30:06Speaker 1: how much further on any.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Play the quarterback can theory make a better throw. That
- 30:10Speaker 3: was a pretty good throw by Sam Donald.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Yeah, he comes off the little gun action play action fake,
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know, belly in the ball and the belly of
- 30:19Speaker 1: the running back takes one hitch and hums it down
- 30:22Speaker 1: the field right, and Gonzales just caught up to the ball,
- 30:25Speaker 1: So it wasn't late, it wasn't underthrown. Like I'm sorry,
- 30:30Speaker 1: there's not a lot, Like how much further do you
- 30:33Speaker 1: wanted to throw it. I don't really understand how much
- 30:35Speaker 1: further you want him to throw it. So Christian Gonzales,
- 30:39Speaker 1: pay him. You know, he was superb. He was fantastic
- 30:43Speaker 1: in this game. And I would expect this offseason one
- 30:47Speaker 1: of the top priorities is going to be trying to
- 30:50Speaker 1: negotiate that contract because he deserves it.
- 30:53Speaker 2: And I also would just say.
- 30:55Speaker 1: You know, because I know we talked about on this
- 30:56Speaker 1: show obviously a couple of weeks ago, maybe a couple
- 31:00Speaker 1: of months ago, about this and about if Christian Gonzales
- 31:03Speaker 1: was going to get re signed by the team, and
- 31:05Speaker 1: I said it was no guarantee.
- 31:07Speaker 2: There was a.
- 31:10Speaker 1: There was a turn with Mike Rabel. He mentioned it
- 31:13Speaker 1: the Baltimore game was kind of a turning point for him.
- 31:16Speaker 1: If you listen to the way Mike Rabel answered questions
- 31:19Speaker 1: about Christian goan Zalez before the Baltimore game, and then
- 31:23Speaker 1: listened to the way he answered questions about christiangan Zalees
- 31:25Speaker 1: the last few weeks, it's a different answer.
- 31:28Speaker 3: He straight up said he saw a different guy. Yeah,
- 31:30Speaker 3: towards the end of the regular.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So I don't think there's any doubt anymore. Christian Gonzalez
- 31:35Speaker 1: sold Mike rabel on Christian Zalez. Yeah, in these playoffs
- 31:38Speaker 1: and with his effort and all that good stuff, that's
- 31:42Speaker 1: all I got.
- 31:42Speaker 2: That's that's all I got.
- 31:45Speaker 1: I have a couple of good Bryce Berenger had a
- 31:47Speaker 1: nice bounce back game for digging deep, but he wasn't
- 31:50Speaker 1: even the best punter on the field, not even close.
- 31:52Speaker 3: The other punter maybe kind of should have won MVP.
- 31:56Speaker 3: So is it weird that we've covered two Super Bowls?
- 31:59Speaker 3: In Bowlsuper covered, there's a strong case that the punter
- 32:02Speaker 3: should have of the winning team should have been MVP. Yes,
- 32:04Speaker 3: although fifty three probably should have been Slater more so
- 32:08Speaker 3: than Ryan Allen. But I just we've covered some high
- 32:11Speaker 3: level of hunting in the Super Bowl eleven we have.
- 32:13Speaker 1: That's absolutely true. So my next category is a new category.
- 32:17Speaker 1: I got creative because.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Okay, the Goods was tough. I'm not gonna lie.
- 32:21Speaker 1: This is the Goods butt and the butt is they
- 32:25Speaker 1: were good, but they probably still had some plays they'd
- 32:28Speaker 1: want back.
- 32:29Speaker 2: So I have a handful of guys, mostly defense. As
- 32:32Speaker 2: you can imagine, I.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Put first the defense as a whole. The defense as
- 32:37Speaker 1: a whole, I think played a Super Bowl caliber game.
- 32:40Speaker 1: You know, they held Seattle to thirty two point four
- 32:44Speaker 1: percent play success rate. That was the lowest play success
- 32:47Speaker 1: rate Seattle had in a game this season. One for
- 32:50Speaker 1: four in the red zone really kept them in this game,
- 32:53Speaker 1: making them kickfield goals and not touchdowns. Four for sixteen
- 32:56Speaker 1: on third down. It was a good defensive performance. It
- 33:00Speaker 1: wasn't great, but it was good. And I think the
- 33:03Speaker 1: main reason why it wasn't great was because they didn't
- 33:05Speaker 1: turn him over. That that was a big part of it.
- 33:08Speaker 1: The run defense was not good enough. They needed to
- 33:10Speaker 1: stop Kenneth Walker and they didn't.
- 33:11Speaker 2: He won the MVP of the game.
- 33:14Speaker 1: And I would also say there was just a handful
- 33:17Speaker 1: of plays that we can get to here as we
- 33:19Speaker 1: start to get to some of the guys I highlighted
- 33:21Speaker 1: that they had opportunities to make like big impact splash
- 33:27Speaker 1: plays and they left him on the field. And I
- 33:29Speaker 1: think the main guy that was the culprit of that
- 33:32Speaker 1: was Milton Williams, who was really disruptive in this game.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I had him with six pressures, but he missed two sacks.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Just ran right by Sam Barnold and missed two sacks
- 33:43Speaker 1: on him that were big plays in the game.
- 33:46Speaker 2: You know, one came on third down.
- 33:48Speaker 1: Those are the types of plays that if he gets
- 33:50Speaker 1: him on the ground, if he strips, sacks him, if
- 33:53Speaker 1: he forces him into a turnover like anything like that,
- 33:58Speaker 1: those are game altering type plays. So Millon Williams was
- 34:02Speaker 1: beating his block like he was winning up front, like
- 34:05Speaker 1: we've seen him win all year. He just didn't make
- 34:08Speaker 1: that splash play that really tilted the game or flipped
- 34:11Speaker 1: the game, like we saw against Denver when they get
- 34:13Speaker 1: the fumble on Jared Sidham, or we saw the pick
- 34:16Speaker 1: six against Houston, like that type of play. The pay
- 34:19Speaker 1: the Patriots defense just couldn't find that play in this game,
- 34:22Speaker 1: and they needed it.
- 34:23Speaker 2: They needed one of those types of plays.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Yeah, Verbel talked about that that the defense made the
- 34:29Speaker 3: plays that were there to make. They didn't really create anything,
- 34:31Speaker 3: whether it be missing sacks like you said, Stam Darnold,
- 34:33Speaker 3: stepping away from would be tacklers, not being able to
- 34:36Speaker 3: find that turnover Marcus Jones comes close early. That one's
- 34:38Speaker 3: gonna gonna hurt for a little bit. Right, What if
- 34:41Speaker 3: Marcus Jones complete said interception? How different does that game go?
- 34:45Speaker 3: So they played well, but they needed to play better
- 34:47Speaker 3: than well to win the game. It's not it's an
- 34:50Speaker 3: unfair ask, but sometimes that's just what happens.
- 34:53Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's I don't think it's all that unfair,
- 34:55Speaker 1: you know, Like this was that kind of game. Seattle's
- 34:58Speaker 1: defense was dominating like we expect did. The Patriots defense
- 35:01Speaker 1: needed to dominate like that. We were hoping that they would.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Like no one came into this game thinking that the
- 35:06Speaker 1: Patriots offense was going to hang thirty on Seattle's defense,
- 35:09Speaker 1: Like you knew it was gonna be this kind of game.
- 35:12Speaker 1: And they needed some short fields, they needed some turnover production,
- 35:15Speaker 1: they needed some negative plays, and they just didn't get it.
- 35:18Speaker 1: They just didn't get They only sacked them one time.
- 35:20Speaker 1: You know, they had probably four or five opportunities to
- 35:23Speaker 1: sack them. They only sacked them once. So those are
- 35:25Speaker 1: big plays in the game.
- 35:26Speaker 7: You know.
- 35:27Speaker 2: Milon Williams missed a couple of them.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Jalen Hawkins missed one that almost ended it in a
- 35:32Speaker 1: JSN touchdown on a broken play that Sam Darnold just
- 35:35Speaker 1: overthrew him on Calevon Chase and I had him one
- 35:39Speaker 1: for one miss sacked, you know, down in the backfield.
- 35:42Speaker 1: So there was just a couple of missed opportunities there
- 35:44Speaker 1: from the defense. The other guy that I thought was
- 35:47Speaker 1: really really good in this game, you know, Gonzales Woodson,
- 35:50Speaker 1: Milton Williams, Anthony Jennings, I thought was pretty good in
- 35:53Speaker 1: this game as well. Yeah, but even still, you know,
- 35:56Speaker 1: he gave up his edge a couple of times to
- 35:57Speaker 1: Kenneth Walker. It runs a ten and nine that were
- 36:00Speaker 1: still there. But I thought that he was pretty impactful.
- 36:04Speaker 1: He had four stuffs in this game, had a quarterback
- 36:06Speaker 1: hit in the past rush. I'm interested to see what
- 36:09Speaker 1: his future is with this team because we're gonna talk
- 36:11Speaker 1: a lot this offseason about and rushers. Yeah, but he's
- 36:14Speaker 1: been a pretty solid player for them in the playoffs.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think his role can still exist
- 36:20Speaker 3: even if they add or you know, we'll talk about
- 36:22Speaker 3: Harrold Landry's future too, and does he step in it
- 36:25Speaker 3: in a kind of that early down roll and they
- 36:27Speaker 3: add somebody to rush opposite Chase On assuming they re
- 36:30Speaker 3: sign him. Yeah, I thought he was good in the game. Again,
- 36:33Speaker 3: credit to him. I think he's a programmed player for
- 36:35Speaker 3: Mike Vrable at this point, a guy that you point
- 36:37Speaker 3: to and say this is you want to do it,
- 36:39Speaker 3: This is how you do it correctly. A guy that was,
- 36:42Speaker 3: you know, basically off the team midway through training camp
- 36:46Speaker 3: that played his way into a role. Yeah, but yeah,
- 36:49Speaker 3: it'll be interesting to see what they end up doing
- 36:51Speaker 3: with him.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Okay, a couple of quick other ones.
- 36:53Speaker 1: I don't want to spend too much more time on
- 36:56Speaker 1: this because I know we have a lot to talk
- 36:57Speaker 1: about on the on the bads and the stuff that
- 36:59Speaker 1: get to be Carlton Davis I thought was solid in
- 37:02Speaker 1: this game. Got a couple of tough matchups against Shaheed,
- 37:05Speaker 1: who's not the type of receiver that you really want
- 37:08Speaker 1: Carlton Davis against because of the speed mismatch, and I
- 37:10Speaker 1: thought he held up pretty well offensively.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I thought the Mario Douglas was open the entire game
- 37:16Speaker 2: and they just couldn't really get to find a way
- 37:18Speaker 2: to get him the football. A big Tomorrio Douglas game.
- 37:22Speaker 1: My guess is is they felt like, because of the
- 37:24Speaker 1: way Seattle plays so many quarters coverages, that they were
- 37:27Speaker 1: going to get the slot on a safety a lot
- 37:29Speaker 1: of the time, and they were trying to use Damario
- 37:31Speaker 1: Douglas's speed. I had him open like four or five
- 37:34Speaker 1: times in this game, and they just couldn't find He
- 37:36Speaker 1: couldn't find the ball.
- 37:37Speaker 8: You know.
- 37:38Speaker 1: It was the deep post on the third down that
- 37:40Speaker 1: I talked about earlier, the crossing route that Drake made
- 37:42Speaker 1: his flies out and misses the throw.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Yea.
- 37:44Speaker 1: You know there was opportunities like that on this film
- 37:48Speaker 1: for Tomorrio Douglas that you make a few of those
- 37:51Speaker 1: big plays. You know, you never know, you know, a
- 37:52Speaker 1: game like that, you just never know. And I put
- 37:55Speaker 1: Matt Collins on here because he made the two only good.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Catches in the entire game. That's fair. Yeah, So that's
- 38:01Speaker 2: all I got for that. The Bads.
- 38:04Speaker 1: This was hard to kind of separate the bads from
- 38:07Speaker 1: the stuff that gets you beat. All of this could
- 38:10Speaker 1: probably go into the stuff that gets you beat. Honestly.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I put the run defense in the bads though, because
- 38:15Speaker 1: I felt like even though they gave up the five
- 38:19Speaker 1: explosive runs that were in the stuff that gets you
- 38:22Speaker 1: beat kind of category.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, they also stuffed a lot of runs. Yeah it
- 38:25Speaker 2: was game too.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Yeah, So I had a tough time saying that they
- 38:29Speaker 1: lost the game because they gave up you know, what
- 38:33Speaker 1: was it one hundred and something yards to Kenneth Walker
- 38:35Speaker 1: won thirty five.
- 38:36Speaker 3: I think it was.
- 38:37Speaker 2: But the big thing that hurt them in this game
- 38:39Speaker 2: was the edges.
- 38:40Speaker 1: You know, they gave up one hundred and fourteen yards
- 38:42Speaker 1: on twenty one carries outside the tackles. Inside the tackles
- 38:47Speaker 1: they were pretty good. It was only three and a
- 38:48Speaker 1: half yards of carry when he ran it inside, but
- 38:51Speaker 1: when he ran it outside, there was too many lost
- 38:54Speaker 1: edges and you know, letting him win the foot race
- 38:56Speaker 1: around the corner. He bounced a couple of runs out
- 38:58Speaker 1: the backside that were you know, hurt them. Just not
- 39:02Speaker 1: the run defense that we're used to seeing from the
- 39:04Speaker 1: Patriots this postseason, really in any game with Milton Williams,
- 39:08Speaker 1: their run defense has been excellent, and it wasn't. And
- 39:10Speaker 1: this was kind of one of the keys to the game.
- 39:13Speaker 1: You knew you couldn't let their run game and their
- 39:15Speaker 1: play action passing game beat you. And that's exactly what
- 39:18Speaker 1: beat you, you know, on the Patriots defensive side.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Yeah, and the miss tackles too, is like, remember they
- 39:24Speaker 3: were one of the worst tackling teams in the NFL
- 39:26Speaker 3: for the first two weeks. Yeah, we're one of the
- 39:28Speaker 3: best the rest of the way. And then it came
- 39:30Speaker 3: back and I putting them in the bad, not this.
- 39:32Speaker 3: I would put the run defense itself and the bad
- 39:36Speaker 3: the missing tackles and the stuff that gets you beat,
- 39:38Speaker 3: because if they had made some of those tackles they
- 39:39Speaker 3: had an opportunity to. They were fine. Again, it wasn't great.
- 39:44Speaker 3: It wasn't what it had been, but they were fine.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Where the run game really took over for Seattle was
- 39:49Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker, And we talked about this going into the
- 39:51Speaker 3: game being a potential issue. Kenneth Walker runs a lot
- 39:53Speaker 3: bigger than he is. That's where the run game went
- 39:57Speaker 3: from bad to stuff that gets you beat was the mistackle.
- 40:00Speaker 3: So outside of that, I think they were okay. It
- 40:03Speaker 3: was it wasn't great.
- 40:05Speaker 2: They made some plays. Walker made some plays.
- 40:08Speaker 3: You made where where it really became like the point
- 40:11Speaker 3: of no return was the miss tackles, I guess is
- 40:13Speaker 3: my point.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so you mentioned the miss tackles. That was the
- 40:15Speaker 2: next on my list.
- 40:16Speaker 3: You had that in the bad, I do have it
- 40:18Speaker 3: in the ball. I have that in stuff that gets
- 40:19Speaker 3: you beat. Oh, you got to move that down.
- 40:21Speaker 6: Uh.
- 40:22Speaker 1: I just rote poor fundamentals on defense because I think
- 40:26Speaker 1: it's more than just you know say that on both sides.
- 40:28Speaker 1: The miss tackles is a big part of it. Yeah,
- 40:30Speaker 1: PFF had them with eighteen miss tackles in this game.
- 40:33Speaker 2: Wow, eighteen. Next Gen had thirteen.
- 40:36Speaker 3: Has probably closed it. Those are both still high, way
- 40:38Speaker 3: too high, and I think that should be a single
- 40:40Speaker 3: digit number.
- 40:41Speaker 1: The biggest thing that I think was the problem in
- 40:43Speaker 1: this game too, is not just the fact that they
- 40:46Speaker 1: miss tackles, but they gave up ninety five yards after
- 40:49Speaker 1: contact in this game as well. So a lot of
- 40:52Speaker 1: the time when they've had mis tackling issues, they've actually
- 40:55Speaker 1: done a pretty good job of swarming to the ball
- 40:57Speaker 1: and getting the ball carrier down despite you know, a
- 41:00Speaker 1: lot of the mistackles are happening like near the line
- 41:02Speaker 1: of scrimmage where guys are trying to make plays on there,
- 41:05Speaker 1: and then you know they might miss the additial tackle,
- 41:07Speaker 1: but then they swarm them and they get the guy
- 41:09Speaker 1: down for like a two yard game. This was like
- 41:11Speaker 1: we're missing tackles and he's going up the sideline for
- 41:14Speaker 1: thirty yards, right, and they missed on one of his
- 41:17Speaker 1: big runs, Milton Williams missed the tackle. He got ten
- 41:20Speaker 1: more yards than Jalen Hawkins missed a tackle, he got
- 41:22Speaker 1: another ten yards. Like those are the types of ones
- 41:25Speaker 1: that you just can't have. I mentioned the sacks. I
- 41:28Speaker 1: counted four opportunities in the backfield to sack Sam Darnold
- 41:34Speaker 1: that they whiffed on. Okay, they had one sack in
- 41:37Speaker 1: the game. I thought they could have probably had like
- 41:39Speaker 1: five or six. You know, Milton Williams was close a
- 41:41Speaker 1: couple of times. Jalen Hawkins was close on that one
- 41:44Speaker 1: blitz off the edge. I mentioned the one to chase On.
- 41:48Speaker 1: I also felt like this kind of related to the
- 41:51Speaker 1: swarming aspect of it as well, because if Milton Williams
- 41:55Speaker 1: gets the initial pressure that causes Darnold to hold the
- 41:58Speaker 1: ball and move, then like somebody else should be coming
- 42:01Speaker 1: in as like the second layer to try to get
- 42:03Speaker 1: him down of Millon Williams misses. You know, That's why
- 42:05Speaker 1: you have like clean up guys, right, Like Chason's supposed
- 42:09Speaker 1: to be the garbage man, Like he's supposed to come
- 42:11Speaker 1: in and just clean up on all those pressures. And
- 42:15Speaker 1: it just doesn't feel like they had that kind of
- 42:18Speaker 1: layer to their pass. Rushing to their defense is in
- 42:21Speaker 1: this game. So I'm willing to move that to the
- 42:24Speaker 1: stuff that gets you beat.
- 42:25Speaker 2: It wasn't good.
- 42:26Speaker 3: I have it like that.
- 42:28Speaker 1: Tackles is a alarming number. It's too many, and Kenneth
- 42:32Speaker 1: Walker forced eight of them all by himself, So it
- 42:36Speaker 1: just it was a lotus.
- 42:38Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker's only like five pounds.
- 42:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's like he's building.
- 42:44Speaker 3: No, it's crazy. I would have guess he's like six
- 42:47Speaker 3: foot six.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:48Speaker 3: He he's a tremendous player. He let's just you know,
- 42:52Speaker 3: we're we're kind of knocking the Patriots for the way
- 42:53Speaker 3: they played. I'm not saying they don't deserve it, but
- 42:55Speaker 3: let's also give some credit where credit due. Kenneth Walker's
- 42:58Speaker 3: been one of the more underrated running backs in the
- 42:59Speaker 3: league life last few years. Yeah, and he showed up
- 43:02Speaker 3: in the biggest game of the year and balled out,
- 43:04Speaker 3: So he deserves some credit. I just don't want to
- 43:05Speaker 3: lose sight of that. I've always been a fan of his.
- 43:07Speaker 2: He's a great player, you know.
- 43:08Speaker 3: Good for him for for rising to the moment.
- 43:11Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the real bad, the stuff
- 43:14Speaker 2: to get to beat.
- 43:15Speaker 1: A couple of things that I wrote down in here,
- 43:17Speaker 1: I already kind of broke down, you know, the pressure
- 43:20Speaker 1: plan v Able. We talked about the two point conversion
- 43:23Speaker 1: and all that good stuff. Let's talk about the offensive line.
- 43:28Speaker 1: I'm of the thinking that I more look at offensive
- 43:33Speaker 1: line play when it comes to that in terms of
- 43:36Speaker 1: four man pass rush, like when you have five against four,
- 43:40Speaker 1: you need to be able to block that when they
- 43:42Speaker 1: start bringing blitzes and stuff like that. There's more that
- 43:44Speaker 1: goes into that than just offensive line. That then it becomes,
- 43:48Speaker 1: you know, all the different stuff we talked about at
- 43:49Speaker 1: the top of the show. You know what's your answer?
- 43:52Speaker 1: What's are you checking the protection? Are you hot routing,
- 43:55Speaker 1: are you sight adjusting a route? How are you beating
- 43:58Speaker 1: a blitz? What's your problem?
- 44:00Speaker 2: Solving?
- 44:00Speaker 1: Method is much bigger than just the offensive line blocking
- 44:05Speaker 1: the guys in front of them when it comes to
- 44:06Speaker 1: pressure and it comes to blitzes. When it comes to
- 44:08Speaker 1: the four man rushes, they still allowed over a forty
- 44:11Speaker 1: percent pressure rate on four man rushes and Drake May
- 44:15Speaker 1: was sacked five times. Five of his six sacks came
- 44:18Speaker 1: on four man rushes. Now, some of that's him holding
- 44:20Speaker 1: the ball, some of that's the coverage marrying to the pressure.
- 44:24Speaker 1: But we all know the numbers that have been floated
- 44:26Speaker 1: around with Will Campbell. The fourteen numbers outrageous. It wasn't fourteen.
- 44:32Speaker 2: I had it at eight. PFF had it at eight.
- 44:34Speaker 2: I trust eight. Now eight's still too many. It's too many.
- 44:38Speaker 1: But I would just add on top of it, I'm
- 44:40Speaker 1: not trying to sugarcoat it for Will Campbell. We're going
- 44:43Speaker 1: to break him down in a second. But on top
- 44:46Speaker 1: of the fact that, I felt like everybody had a
- 44:48Speaker 1: turn in terms of giving up pressure in this game.
- 44:51Speaker 1: I don't think it was just Will Campbell. I think
- 44:53Speaker 1: all five guys had problems in this game and had
- 44:56Speaker 1: a tough outing, even Morgan Moses. So in Mike on Winnu,
- 44:59Speaker 1: who I think I've both been really solid all year long,
- 45:02Speaker 1: gave up some key pressures in this game. You know,
- 45:05Speaker 1: the initial pressure that causes the stripsack in the fourth
- 45:08Speaker 1: quarter is Mike onwen who getting beat to his outside edge,
- 45:12Speaker 1: causing Drake made a step up in the pocket. So
- 45:14Speaker 1: it was all across the board. They did not block
- 45:17Speaker 1: well across the board in this game. I know we
- 45:20Speaker 1: have a lot of calls and probably emails. We have emails,
- 45:23Speaker 1: We have probably calls about the tells and all.
- 45:26Speaker 2: That kind of stuff.
- 45:28Speaker 1: I just think they got whooped, okay, But I don't
- 45:31Speaker 1: think that it was like some magical Jared Wilson's eyes
- 45:34Speaker 1: were looking over here instead of over there, or this
- 45:37Speaker 1: stance was this and that stance.
- 45:38Speaker 2: But I don't think it was that.
- 45:40Speaker 1: I think they just got beat by the Seattle pass
- 45:42Speaker 1: rushers all across the board. Every single offensive vineman could
- 45:47Speaker 1: have been better in this game. Not and Will Campbell
- 45:49Speaker 1: was the worst, but all of them struggled.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean this was the worst game the year
- 45:53Speaker 3: for Morgan Moses, Jared Wilson had a lot of trouble. Yeah,
- 45:56Speaker 3: it was not a good game and it compounded, right.
- 45:59Speaker 3: I think Jared Wilson of struggles in some ways hurt
- 46:01Speaker 3: Will Campbell. Like the first sack of the game, Well,
- 46:03Speaker 3: Campbell gets beat, but it's one of those plays where
- 46:06Speaker 3: you use the term die slowly a lot. Yeah, where
- 46:08Speaker 3: he's probably gonna give Drake May at least time to
- 46:10Speaker 3: run out of the pocket and scramble, but that Jared
- 46:12Speaker 3: Wilson tries to clean the guy out and ends up
- 46:15Speaker 3: just pushing him past Campbell right to May.
- 46:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:18Speaker 2: On the Derek hallsack.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Yeah, that first one yeaheah, so the issues compounded. It
- 46:23Speaker 3: was nobody played well individually, and then that made everybody
- 46:27Speaker 3: look worse.
- 46:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:29Speaker 1: So as for Campbell specifically, you got you gotta mention
- 46:33Speaker 1: the knee to be fair, Like, to be fair to
- 46:36Speaker 1: the guy, you got to mention that he had a
- 46:38Speaker 1: pretty significant MCL spray And it sounds like a tear,
- 46:42Speaker 1: he said yesterday of the ligament in his knee.
- 46:46Speaker 2: Maybe that was a factor.
- 46:48Speaker 1: It probably was the other thing that I was seeing
- 46:51Speaker 1: with him is that he tends to set vertically. So
- 46:55Speaker 1: I know that this phrasing has gone around a lot.
- 46:58Speaker 1: I'm sure people have read it on Twitter and stuff
- 47:01Speaker 1: like that. So basically, a vertical set is like he's
- 47:04Speaker 1: literally setting backwards, like he's trying to jump out of
- 47:08Speaker 1: his stance and go straight backwards. And a lot of
- 47:11Speaker 1: times they player's vertical set to buy themselves time to
- 47:17Speaker 1: get to their set points because it creates space between
- 47:20Speaker 1: them and the guy that's rushing on them. And I
- 47:24Speaker 1: think the biggest issue that I have with it, and look,
- 47:27Speaker 1: if he's most comfortable with vertical vertical sets, like, I'm
- 47:31Speaker 1: not gonna sit here and tell him to change up
- 47:33Speaker 1: his entire approach. I think that that's probably a mistake.
- 47:36Speaker 1: But when you vertical set, what you're doing is you're
- 47:40Speaker 1: you're creating space between you and the pass rusher, which
- 47:44Speaker 1: is giving the pass rusher now like a runway to
- 47:47Speaker 1: run at you and convert speed to power. I just
- 47:51Speaker 1: don't understand with his body type, why that's the type
- 47:55Speaker 1: of set that he would use, because what's happening is
- 47:59Speaker 1: is that he's vertically setting into the backfield, which is
- 48:02Speaker 1: already putting him further into the quarterback into the pocket
- 48:06Speaker 1: right than you naturally would be on an angled set anyways.
- 48:10Speaker 1: And then on top of that, he doesn't have the
- 48:12Speaker 1: reach advantage. So what he's happening is he's now he's
- 48:16Speaker 1: catching guys like he's literally catching them, but when he
- 48:20Speaker 1: catches them, he's not catching them with his feet in
- 48:23Speaker 1: the ground, so his feet or go are still moving.
- 48:26Speaker 2: He doesn't have the.
- 48:27Speaker 1: Length to reach out and touch the guy first and
- 48:30Speaker 1: establish that first contact. So now he's on his heels
- 48:33Speaker 1: and now he's back into the quarterback's lap. So to me, it's,
- 48:37Speaker 1: you know, one like, does he need to be more
- 48:40Speaker 1: aggressive with the pass sets and be set more angrarly
- 48:43Speaker 1: like at a forty five degree angle so that he
- 48:46Speaker 1: can go out and cut off the angle and go
- 48:48Speaker 1: get the guy instead of having the guy come to him.
- 48:52Speaker 1: Right and two, you know, I think a lot of
- 48:54Speaker 1: what the Ligne guys are saying is like his hands
- 48:56Speaker 1: are just late, Like his strike timing is just late, not.
- 48:59Speaker 3: Even really using his inside hand.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so he's kind of just letting them into his
- 49:04Speaker 1: chest and letting him them into his frame.
- 49:07Speaker 2: And that's a lot that's gonna let him. You know,
- 49:10Speaker 2: he's going to be vulnerable at to power when he
- 49:12Speaker 2: does that. So, you know, is it fixable.
- 49:15Speaker 1: I think it is fixable, But let's not lose sight
- 49:19Speaker 1: of the fact that this is a length issue. But
- 49:23Speaker 1: it's about the best way to kind of circumvent that issue,
- 49:28Speaker 1: Like how do you best mask that issue? And every player,
- 49:32Speaker 1: you know has deficiencies, you know, every player has you know,
- 49:36Speaker 1: some receivers are faster than others, some receivers are quicker
- 49:39Speaker 1: than others. Some receivers catch the ball well, some of
- 49:41Speaker 1: the receivers catch the ball you know in traffic.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Well, like there's everybody has trains.
- 49:45Speaker 1: And weaknesses, Right, it's just about how do you at
- 49:48Speaker 1: this level, how do you manage all those strengths and weaknesses.
- 49:52Speaker 1: And right now, I feel like his technique is letting
- 49:54Speaker 1: him down. Like he's he's trying to use a technique
- 49:58Speaker 1: that I typically see with like the big dudes, like
- 50:01Speaker 1: a Trent Brown, like is like a guy that vertical
- 50:05Speaker 1: sets a lot, because he's just gonna say, I'm gonna
- 50:07Speaker 1: sit back, I'm gonna brace for contact, I'm gonna put
- 50:10Speaker 1: my feet in the ground, and when you hit me,
- 50:12Speaker 1: you're just gonna be running.
- 50:13Speaker 3: Into a wall.
- 50:14Speaker 1: Right, And the problem with Will Campbell is that his
- 50:16Speaker 1: feet aer moving on top of the fact that he's
- 50:19Speaker 1: already vertically setting, and so now when he gets run into,
- 50:22Speaker 1: he's just going backwards. And you just can't have that combination.
- 50:25Speaker 1: So what's the answer, what's like his solution? I think
- 50:29Speaker 1: that's why a lot of these O line experts, you know,
- 50:32Speaker 1: Mitchell Schwartz, Tron Armstead, Duke manniwet.
- 50:35Speaker 3: Is line experts, well except for the awesome guys who
- 50:37Speaker 3: played the position.
- 50:38Speaker 1: Yeah, these guys are coming out and saying this because
- 50:41Speaker 1: there are ways technically.
- 50:44Speaker 3: To work around his body type, right, he's just.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Not doing them.
- 50:48Speaker 3: There's also, I mean, you know, it'll help. It's gonna
- 50:50Speaker 3: be his first off season NFL program, putting on muscle,
- 50:53Speaker 3: putting on size.
- 50:53Speaker 1: Yeah, his anchor, he needs to work on his anchor.
- 50:56Speaker 1: He needs to get some more sand in his pants,
- 50:58Speaker 1: like just getting healthier. And I think a bit a
- 51:00Speaker 1: big problem with the anchor though, is like his feet
- 51:03Speaker 1: aren't in the ground, so like when you vertically said
- 51:06Speaker 1: you want to stop your feet and sink your feet
- 51:08Speaker 1: into the ground, And.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Now he keeps getting hit in the back pedal, right
- 51:12Speaker 3: and that way.
- 51:12Speaker 2: There you're bracing for the contact. It's I think that
- 51:16Speaker 2: it's fixable. I really do.
- 51:18Speaker 1: And I think that he's played the position well enough
- 51:22Speaker 1: to give him at least another year to try to
- 51:24Speaker 1: fix it.
- 51:25Speaker 2: At left tackle, Yeah, I don't.
- 51:28Speaker 1: I'm not subscribing to moving him, and I don't think
- 51:30Speaker 1: the Patriots are either.
- 51:31Speaker 3: I mean, Mike Vrabel made that very clear yesterday.
- 51:34Speaker 1: And I think that's the right decision. You know, because
- 51:37Speaker 1: we talked about this all off season last year. Where
- 51:41Speaker 1: else are you going to find a starting caliber left tackle,
- 51:44Speaker 1: Like unless you just assume that you're gonna luck into
- 51:47Speaker 1: Jordan Mylotta in the seventh round and you're gonna turn
- 51:50Speaker 1: him into a starting caliber left tackle.
- 51:52Speaker 2: We've seen that.
- 51:53Speaker 1: We've been down this road before with the Patriots. Like
- 51:55Speaker 1: it's not they don't become available in free agency. They
- 51:59Speaker 1: very seldom get traded. They get drafted. The ones that
- 52:02Speaker 1: are good enough get drafted very very high in the draft.
- 52:05Speaker 1: So when you're picking thirty first overall and the veteran
- 52:09Speaker 1: market's really not a great avenue to define left tackles, like,
- 52:12Speaker 1: where's it coming from if you start moving him around?
- 52:15Speaker 1: So the one suggesting that I would make though, is
- 52:19Speaker 1: and I don't think that he's getting talked about enough
- 52:22Speaker 1: because Will Campbell is getting all the heat.
- 52:25Speaker 2: I think Jared Wilson is the one that needs to move.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Yes, Like I think Jared Wilson if they really like
- 52:31Speaker 1: him and they feel like he's a starting caliber player,
- 52:35Speaker 1: then I think Jared Wilson needs to move to center.
- 52:38Speaker 1: And then you need to sign a I would love
- 52:41Speaker 1: for them, and they missed the boat on Joe Toney
- 52:43Speaker 1: last year and that was the move and whatever I digress,
- 52:47Speaker 1: I would love for them to sign a veteran left
- 52:50Speaker 1: guard that could really make Will Campbell's job easier, you know,
- 52:55Speaker 1: that can help him. That is maybe a little bit
- 52:57Speaker 1: wider bodied, you know, takes up a little bit more space,
- 53:01Speaker 1: kind of covers up for some of the weaknesses in
- 53:03Speaker 1: Will Campbell's game by having a guy next to him
- 53:06Speaker 1: that is been there, that's done it and plays at
- 53:09Speaker 1: a high level.
- 53:10Speaker 2: I think that that could go a long way.
- 53:12Speaker 1: When you put two rookies next to each other on
- 53:13Speaker 1: the line, they're just you're just playing target practice at
- 53:16Speaker 1: that point, especially against these good defenses. You know, defense
- 53:19Speaker 1: are gonna blitz over them. They're just gonna put their
- 53:21Speaker 1: best rushers over them, and it's gonna be a long
- 53:24Speaker 1: day at the office. At least if you space those
- 53:26Speaker 1: guys out a little bit on the line, they they
- 53:28Speaker 1: can't They're isolated and you can't just go right at them.
- 53:32Speaker 1: So if you have a Winnu at right guard, you
- 53:35Speaker 1: have Wilson at center, and you sign a left guard
- 53:38Speaker 1: that can play, you know, a veteran left guard that
- 53:40Speaker 1: can play well, now you have two veterans on either
- 53:44Speaker 1: side of Campbell and Wilson right and you have and
- 53:47Speaker 1: you can sort of mitigate that damage a little bit.
- 53:50Speaker 1: So I think that if we're talking about moving guys,
- 53:52Speaker 1: the piece to move is Jared Wilson in terms of
- 53:56Speaker 1: where he's playing on the line. If we're talking about
- 53:58Speaker 1: Will Campbell's future, I think the move is to coach
- 54:01Speaker 1: him up and get his get him to be better
- 54:04Speaker 1: with his technique, and have him use techniques that are
- 54:07Speaker 1: better for his body type as well.
- 54:10Speaker 2: So that's the offensive line. Now we got to talk
- 54:13Speaker 2: about the quarterback.
- 54:17Speaker 1: I think the combination of things with Drake May in
- 54:20Speaker 1: this game, just right off the bat, from an accuracy standpoint,
- 54:25Speaker 1: I had him with five just blatant misthrows, you know,
- 54:27Speaker 1: poor accuracy.
- 54:29Speaker 2: Just can't have him type throws.
- 54:31Speaker 1: The other thing that I would say, and I know
- 54:33Speaker 1: that clip with Julian Love is going around of him
- 54:36Speaker 1: saying that he's hesitant. I definitely think that his lack
- 54:40Speaker 1: of trust stemmed from some of the struggles that he's
- 54:44Speaker 1: had in these playoffs.
- 54:45Speaker 2: I think he lost his confidence.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he had a rational confidence before he
- 54:49Speaker 1: would test windows down the field, he would let it lose,
- 54:53Speaker 1: he'd rip it into tight zone windows across the middle
- 54:56Speaker 1: of the field, just like he did to Matt Collins
- 54:58Speaker 1: on the twenty four yarder. He had seen those types
- 55:00Speaker 1: of throws on Drake May's film all season long, and
- 55:03Speaker 1: in this game, there are just so many instances where
- 55:06Speaker 1: I was like, why isn't he you know, Diggs is
- 55:08Speaker 1: winning on a little fade route, Like why is he
- 55:10Speaker 1: not giving him a chance?
- 55:12Speaker 2: You know, throwing the ball.
- 55:13Speaker 1: You guys, you know are are you know, split in
- 55:16Speaker 1: the seams and he's just not ripping the ball between
- 55:19Speaker 1: the safeties. You know, things like that that we're just
- 55:22Speaker 1: so used to seeing Drake May do in the regular season.
- 55:25Speaker 1: I saw a player that lost his confidence. I saw
- 55:28Speaker 1: a player that was probably trying to be too careful
- 55:32Speaker 1: with the football, you know, in terms of not turning
- 55:34Speaker 1: the ball over and being a little bit too conservative
- 55:39Speaker 1: with his decision making. I did see a guy that
- 55:43Speaker 1: was a little stuck on reeds at times as well. Now,
- 55:46Speaker 1: some of that was the way that the players were
- 55:48Speaker 1: designed and the way that they were running the offense.
- 55:52Speaker 1: The last thing that I think we have to discuss
- 55:55Speaker 1: with Drake May just a little bit, is all this
- 55:58Speaker 1: protection stuff that we're taping about pre snap. At least
- 56:01Speaker 1: some of that falls on the quarterback. Now, he's a
- 56:03Speaker 1: young kid. I get that, he's a second year quarterback.
- 56:06Speaker 1: He's twenty three years old. It's a lot to ask
- 56:09Speaker 1: him to get to the line of scrimmage, see a
- 56:12Speaker 1: blitz coming, pre snap, check a protection, change a route,
- 56:16Speaker 1: get them into the right play, and then run the
- 56:19Speaker 1: play successfully.
- 56:20Speaker 2: Like that's an undertaking. It's a big thing. Yeah, that's
- 56:23Speaker 2: but that's professional football. Like that's quarterback again.
- 56:28Speaker 1: And maybe he's not going to be Tom Brady where
- 56:30Speaker 1: he's going to be able to direct traffic, you know,
- 56:33Speaker 1: and be able to fix all these different things and
- 56:34Speaker 1: all these different problems. But he has to get them
- 56:37Speaker 1: into the right play. And I remember, you know, I
- 56:40Speaker 1: love that quote from Brady. I didn't want to snap
- 56:43Speaker 1: the ball into a bad defense, right, Like how if
- 56:46Speaker 1: the defense is showing me something and I know this
- 56:48Speaker 1: play is going isn't going to work against this defense?
- 56:50Speaker 1: Like how can we get out of that play? And
- 56:52Speaker 1: how can we get out of that into a better
- 56:55Speaker 1: play against that defense? Like that's the type of approach
- 56:57Speaker 1: that Josh McDaniels drills it to his quarterbacks, Like that's
- 57:01Speaker 1: what they this offense is supposed to allow the quarterback
- 57:04Speaker 1: to do. That's why the quarterback has all the controls
- 57:07Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage. So the one sort of
- 57:12Speaker 1: out that I will give Josh McDaniels, you had a
- 57:16Speaker 1: second year quarterback whose first year in the system, and
- 57:19Speaker 1: you had two rookie starters on the offensive line.
- 57:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:22Speaker 1: I think what ended up happening a lot is that
- 57:24Speaker 1: they got really predictable production wise. They probably did not
- 57:28Speaker 1: have the full library of protections that Josh McDaniels is
- 57:32Speaker 1: used to having, So they had maybe a couple of
- 57:35Speaker 1: different protections that they could, you know, get in and
- 57:38Speaker 1: out of, but for the most part, it was kind
- 57:40Speaker 1: of half slide man to man the backside, and that
- 57:44Speaker 1: was kind of what they were doing. So when they
- 57:45Speaker 1: were going three by one, you know, three receivers to
- 57:48Speaker 1: the one side of the formation, Seattle was just blitzing
- 57:52Speaker 1: off the backside and they were bringing heat off the backside,
- 57:56Speaker 1: which was in you know, taking advantage of the man's
- 57:59Speaker 1: side of the protection. Right, So like the two guys
- 58:02Speaker 1: on that side of the center are locked in man
- 58:04Speaker 1: to man on the two players, so if you add
- 58:06Speaker 1: a third player in there, there's just nobody to block them.
- 58:09Speaker 1: And I think that they got kind of what's the
- 58:13Speaker 1: word like simple with their protections. They got a little
- 58:16Speaker 1: bit watered down. And I would also say the same
- 58:18Speaker 1: thing with the route concepts. You know, if I saw
- 58:21Speaker 1: them run dagger one more time in this game, it
- 58:24Speaker 1: was they ran dagger probably ten times in this game.
- 58:27Speaker 1: And I think a lot of that comes back to,
- 58:30Speaker 1: you know, what can we execute, Like what can we
- 58:33Speaker 1: go out there and realistically block and execute? And they
- 58:37Speaker 1: just only had so many tools in the tool belt,
- 58:39Speaker 1: and against the great defense like Seattle, you need changeups,
- 58:42Speaker 1: like you need more than just a couple of things.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's it's a good way to lay
- 58:48Speaker 3: it out. You covered a lot of it there.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Okay, I think I think I did enough. I think
- 58:52Speaker 1: I vented enough about this this one. I have to
- 58:55Speaker 1: admit it's not a game, and I don't know how
- 58:57Speaker 1: you feel about it. It's not a game that stings me,
- 59:00Speaker 1: like like they lost the Super Bowl like seventeen or
- 59:03Speaker 1: two thousand and seven or something like those ones hurt
- 59:05Speaker 1: like that, that's stuff. This one is bothering me because
- 59:10Speaker 1: I think there was so many things that they could
- 59:12Speaker 1: have done to counter what Seattle was doing, and they
- 59:16Speaker 1: just didn't do any of them. And it was kind
- 59:18Speaker 1: of like I felt like it almost was like they
- 59:22Speaker 1: woke up from a dream in the middle of the
- 59:25Speaker 1: game and were like, oh crap, the super Bowl started,
- 59:28Speaker 1: you know, and like they didn't have they just had
- 59:32Speaker 1: so many different like answers or so many different checks
- 59:35Speaker 1: or so many different solutions to the problems that Seattle
- 59:38Speaker 1: was presenting to them, and they just kind of drop
- 59:42Speaker 1: the ball all of it. And so I keep on
- 59:44Speaker 1: going back through this game being like if they had
- 59:47Speaker 1: just done this, if they had just done that, not
- 59:49Speaker 1: like in a way of like, man, I'm so like
- 59:53Speaker 1: gutted that they lost. It was in a way of
- 59:55Speaker 1: like they could have played so much better than that,
- 59:57Speaker 1: Like they could have played so much better than that,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: and they just didn't. So I want to I'm sure
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: we'll get more questions about it, but like I never
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: want to talk about this game again, Like I just don't.
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: A couple of shows on it.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: You can lead it out other than like when they
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: win the next one, like, oh, they needed that game
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: to learn Maybe this is like.
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Their twenty twenty two Golden State series. Yeah, that's a
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: Celtics reference for those people that don't know. All right,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: we're gonna take a quick break. I'm gonna stop talking

- 1:03:17Speaker 1: you get home, she's really happy to see you, right,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: and everything is all sunshines and rainbows. The next day,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: you always know that, like the stuff that's been on
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: her mind while you're gone is about to.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: Come right like you know it's coming because it was
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: too good to be true.
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: There's all obviously going to be things that she needed
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: to talk to me about, as is it with this
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: case with any relationship.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: And she wants to go to Bob's because she wants
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: a new couch.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Okay, so I've been told that this weekend, we will
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: be going to our lovely friends at Bob's to shop
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: for couches.
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: So lucky me.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: But I do love Bob's that those are our guys, yea,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: so maybe they can give me a nice discount because
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: we just read their hopefully. All right, let's get to
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: the phones. I know you guys have been waiting. Sean
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: is in Vancouver. What's up, Sean?
- 1:04:08Speaker 9: You know the super Bowl? Obviously we're all disappointed with it.
- 1:04:11Speaker 9: But the way I see it is this is the
- 1:04:15Speaker 9: best team the Patriots had since twenty eighteen. But the
- 1:04:19Speaker 9: future is way brighter. We're going to get better and
- 1:04:23Speaker 9: even like you said, the schedule stuff or you might
- 1:04:26Speaker 9: not notice it in terms of wins next season, I
- 1:04:30Speaker 9: have faith that the Patriots will be back and are
- 1:04:33Speaker 9: definitely on the right trend. The question I have though,
- 1:04:37Speaker 9: is for the off season players to bring back. There's
- 1:04:44Speaker 9: two free agents that I think should really be resigned,
- 1:04:48Speaker 9: ke Tason and Caius Toga, and I also agree that
- 1:04:53Speaker 9: Christian Gonzales should be extended. If there's anyone else, let
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: me know and I'll leave you that go past.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Thanks for the call, Sean. Yeah, there, So the Patrios
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: only have six unrestricted free agents.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: Here we all get the list for you. It is Hooper,
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: Austin Hooper, Darian Loath, Theer Munford, Kiris Tong and Kleon,
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Chase On and Jalen Hawkins. Yeah, so here we go
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: off season.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Now restricted free agent Jack Gibbons.
- 1:05:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope he should be back, so put.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: That in there. But overall not a long list.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: No, I'm very interested to see what happens with Kylevon
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: Chase one. He's at the point of his career now
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: where he's going to be looking to cash in. This
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: is not going to be another one year prove it deal,
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: especially after the season that he had. He's probably gonna
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: get I don't know, you know, I was interested. I
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: was actually putting the list together.
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: Today.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: I'm probably gonna just write a quick thing about they
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: only have six of them, so it's pretty easy to
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: write about this free agency list here. With Chase On,
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: you know, spot Track only has his estimated value around
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: nine or ten million a year.
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's going to be more than that too.
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: Could be how much more, I don't know, but I
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: think that you're looking probably at like three for forty five,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: you know, three years for forty five totals fifteen a year.
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: I think that that's probably the ceiling for him and
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: probably what he's going to be shooting for. How much
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: is that real money? How much is that you know,
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: guaranteed or whatever remains to be seen, but h three
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: years fifteen million per forty five million, you know, total
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: value with all the stuff baked in, Like, is that
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: too rich for your blood?
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: For Chase On?
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: No, because they need two guys, so you know, it's
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: just you're gonna have to add two edge rushers. Anyway,
- 1:06:45Speaker 3: you can get it done before he hits the open market,
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: and you can relatively keep that total in check. It's
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: probably beneficial. I don't think this year is total fluke,
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: and part of it is Milton Williams definitely helped. But
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: he's gonna be back next to Milton Williams long as
- 1:06:57Speaker 3: he's here.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I would agree.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I would be cautious, and I think the was it
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: the twenty two off season where they've been moved all
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: the parts on the offensive line and blew the whole
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: thing up. I would be cautious of something like that
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: happening where now you go into next season or into
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: the off season, you lose Calebon Chason in free agency,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: and now you need two starting edge rushers and not
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: just one right where you should be adding to this
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: team and you should be stacking talent on the roster,
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: and now you're just you know, if you use the
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: analogy of like a canoe, you have holes and now
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: you just created another hole in the canoe, and now
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: you're taking on water.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Right, That's what they did to the offensive line in.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: Twenty twenty two when they traded Jack Mason, and they
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: let Joe Toney walk, and they let Ted Carris walk
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: and they kind of never recovered from that. So I
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: would just like to see them try to lock up
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: Chase On if they can. I just don't know if
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: they're going to be able to. I think that money
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: might get a lot more than what spot track is saying.
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: But we'll see. Gets get back to it here. Patty
- 1:07:58Speaker 2: is an aguam, What is upad Hey, good afternoon, Jens,
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Good afternoon.
- 1:08:06Speaker 10: So I got a few things to discuss, and I'll
- 1:08:09Speaker 10: try and make him quick. The first thing I would say,
- 1:08:12Speaker 10: we're disregarding the game. I think obviously the offensive line
- 1:08:16Speaker 10: was an issue, but I kind of feel like he
- 1:08:19Speaker 10: brings me back to like Dick Rayvines his nose on
- 1:08:22Speaker 10: Tom Brady after his rookie year, where he's like everything
- 1:08:25Speaker 10: he has to do, he just has to do faster
- 1:08:28Speaker 10: and ev And I know you said, like you don't
- 1:08:30Speaker 10: want to see him become a checkdown Charlie, but he
- 1:08:32Speaker 10: just has to make be able to see the defense
- 1:08:36Speaker 10: make quicker decisions and when he needs to just get
- 1:08:39Speaker 10: rid of the ball faster. That's obvious. And I do
- 1:08:41Speaker 10: believe you said something to that effect yesterday. Priority number
- 1:08:46Speaker 10: one in the off season should be resigning Christian Gonzales,
- 1:08:50Speaker 10: followed by trying to resign Taga and Chase On Then
- 1:08:55Speaker 10: I would I would do my best to make moves
- 1:08:58Speaker 10: for Max Crossey. And I know you said you don't
- 1:09:02Speaker 10: think there's going to be like a lot of wholesale
- 1:09:04Speaker 10: changes to the roster, but there are there are needs.
- 1:09:07Speaker 10: I mean, they are going to need to eventually find
- 1:09:11Speaker 10: a replacement for Morgan Moses Hunter. Henry's our only tight
- 1:09:15Speaker 10: end on the roster that's rostered going into twenty twenty six,
- 1:09:19Speaker 10: and he's going to be what thirty one years old.
- 1:09:22Speaker 10: We're going to need a left guard there's just there's
- 1:09:24Speaker 10: positions to fill. It's not a lot, it's not as
- 1:09:26Speaker 10: daunting as it was last year. But after what they
- 1:09:30Speaker 10: did this passed off season, I have the utmost faith
- 1:09:33Speaker 10: in Brabel and the front off the staff going forwards.
- 1:09:36Speaker 10: And we got the biggest puzzle piece, we got the quarterback.
- 1:09:39Speaker 10: So you know, I'm optimistic.
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: I was.
- 1:09:41Speaker 10: I was pissed off Sunday night, but I got I
- 1:09:43Speaker 10: quickly got over it because we just I felt like
- 1:09:46Speaker 10: we just got out classed and that's all I got today.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: Guys, thanks, thanks for the call.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and no one's saying there isn't needs, But now
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: they're just like every other team where they just have needs.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: Before they needed a whole new team like that. That
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: that's a different animal. This is now like they just
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: have holes to fill like any other normal, you know,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: good team would have. You know, they need We're talking
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: about them needing a left guard. We're talking about them needing,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: you know, a younger, you know, more developmental type of
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: tight end.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Potentially.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: You know, they have needs in terms of can you
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: make moves to put you over the top. A number
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: one wide receiver, a stud pass rusher on the outside,
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: you know, a Max Crosby and AJ Brown, like those
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: types of moves. Those are not the types of moves
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: that they were making the last two off seasons. The
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: last two off seasons, they were rebuilding the entire roster.
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: Now they're just trying to look at what's left and
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: you know, can we fill some different things here and there?
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: You know, I think we're gonna have a lot of
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: conversations about wide receivers. And I don't think that adding
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: another day two wide receiver to the pool of wide
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: receivers that they currently have is the conversation that we
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: should be having. The conversation that we should be having
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: is who is the A J. Brown trade? And maybe
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: it's just a J. Brown, but like, like where what's
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: the what move is that? You know it didn't work
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: out for them, but you know, Miami trading for Tyreek Hill,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: the Eagles trading for a J. Brown h you know
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: those types of moves. That's where the Patriots are now.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: They are in the window. They they their window is
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: wide open and this is the time to strike with
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Drake made cheap for the next three years. So it's
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: a much different ballgame. And that's all I'm trying to
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: get across like you're talking about left guard, tight end safety,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: Like maybe it's these are not but my point is
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: these are not like premium.
- 1:11:43Speaker 3: This is not even positions outside of edge rusher is
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: the one big one.
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: This is not quarterback, left tackle, edge rusher. Well, they nerush,
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: but they need a edge rusher. I don't know if
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: like if it is Max Crosby, then great.
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: But they ed rusher need but on safety real quick
- 1:11:59Speaker 3: because we've got two calls on it. Yeah, I Jalen
- 1:12:03Speaker 3: Hawkins should be is on the list of guys they
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: should bring back. He's probably not gonna cost a ton. Yeah,
- 1:12:07Speaker 3: played well last year next to Woodson. I look to
- 1:12:11Speaker 3: I don't really break the bank. And look, he's twenty
- 1:12:13Speaker 3: nine and he may be looking for his last big contract,
- 1:12:16Speaker 3: but he should be in the conversation the guys to
- 1:12:19Speaker 3: be brought back.
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, I agree.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: I am again, Like my mindset is they need to add,
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: you know, things to the house. We should not be
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: subtracting things to the house that don't need to be subtracted,
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: right yea. So if you're gonna go out there and
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: you're gonna say we can upgrade Jalen Hawkins and then sure,
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: go out there and upgrade Jalen Hawkins, but you should
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: not be doing any worse than Jalen Hawkins, you know,
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: And they don't need to go now back in the
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: draft and draft somebody and like Develde, like if they're
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: two starting.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: Safeties next year, Craig Woodson and Jalen Hawkins, and I
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: feel good about that.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: I mean they just made the Super Bowl at that right,
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: he'sact starting safeties, all right. Next caller here is Randy
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: in Providence. What's that, Brandy?
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: How's it going? Guys? I'm glad you talked on touched
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: on Hawkins because I think he's an important piece to
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: come back. I think he did a really good job
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: this year, and I think you could get him back
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: for something comparable to like what Jeremy Chin signed last
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: off season with the I think he signed with the
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: Raiders is two years, sixteen million, something in that neighborhood
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: and lengths maybe for Hawkins would be great. I think
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: that also. You know, you guys haven't really mentioned it
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: at all, but there's value in enjoying your job. There's
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: value in the enjoying coming to work. And I think
- 1:13:33Speaker 4: the Patriots have that now in a way that they
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: didn't in the past. I think you touched on it earlier.
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: Left guard is the biggest position, and I think Jared
- 1:13:43Speaker 4: Wilson needs to move over to center. He was my
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: impression in this summer last year, but he really only
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: moved to guard because he had difficulty stamping the ball,
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: and I think in his first off season it's a
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: great opportunity for him to work on that. When you
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: talk talked about tight ends too, I think Padre Henry
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: like he costs a lot of money for what he brings.
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: He brings leadership. He does bring leadership, he brings you know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: I know he's got to throw in chemistry with Drake,
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: but at the end of the day, he's producing, you know,
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: forty five yards a game last year and like thirty
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: seven yards of a game over his tenure with the Patriots.
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: I just don't think he should be like the first
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: receiving option in that room. I think you see a
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: kid like Isaiah likely bring a local kid back home.
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: He proved to be a really good receiving option for Baltimore.
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: I wonder what you think about getting him in the
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: draft and then, like you said, getting an experience left guard,
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: and maybe targeting a left guard back up in the
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: draft too, to kind of train up behind him. Maybe
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: someone like, I don't know, Jeremiah Wright out of Auburn,
- 1:14:42Speaker 4: who you could get early on day three or late
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: on day two.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Maybe thanks for the call, Randy.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that they moved Jared Wilson to left
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: guard out of necessity.
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: I think that they saw early on that Garrett Bradbury
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: was going to be solid for them at center and
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: maybe have a bounce back year. Left guard became kind
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: of the camp competition spot between Jared Wilson and Ben
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Brown and Cole Strange, and Jared Wilson was just good
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: enough as a young player as a rookie that they
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: drafted pretty high that the tie kind of went to
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: the runner and it was, you know, that was Jared Wilson,
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: and he ended up starting there. I don't think that
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: they drafted him to be a left guard. I think
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: they drafted him to be a center. But then they
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: got there, and and brad Bury looked pretty good in camp,
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: and and so they stuck with it, and that's how
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: we got to where we are. The tight ends in
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: free agency are appealing that's probably the one of the
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: few places in free agency where there is talent in
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: this free agency.
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: Class is at tight end.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: Yet two the caller mentioned Isaiah likely Kyle Pitts is
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: a free agent as well. Uh, the one thing that
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: I have hesitation with, just slight hesitation with, is neither
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: one of those guys is a particularly good blocker.
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: And so.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: How are you kind of creating mismatches in the passing
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: game if you're not running the.
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: Football effectively with those players on the field. So I
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: think that was a big problem that they had this
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: year and why they didn't feature as much twelve personnel
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: as I think a lot of us expected them to
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: do with Hooper and Henry is that those two guys
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: weren't blocking particularly well. So when they put twelve on
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: the field, it didn't force defenses to play nickel or
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: to get out of nickel and play base defense. It
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: kept nickel on the field, and then you don't get
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: the mismatches in the passing game that you're trying to
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: create by putting heavy personnel on the field. So if
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: you sign a guy like Kyle Pitts or Isaiah likely
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: absolutely upgrades in terms of their receiving talent. No doubt
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: about it that those two guys are better, younger, more
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: explosive playmakers than the ones that they have. But are
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: you basically when you go twelve or when you put
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: likelier pits on the field. I think teams are going
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: to kind of treat that as eleven and they're just
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: gonna keep Nickel on the field and dare you to
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: run it at them with those players as your inline
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: tight ends. I don't know if that's gonna work. I
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: guess is the long way to graham this house with
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: that answer. I think that this is kind of what
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: happened with Atlanta. Is like Kyle Pitts is a freak,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: Like he's a great athlete, but when they teams were
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: not overreacting to their run game because of Kyle Pitts
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: and because of some of the shortcomings that they had
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: run blocking. You know, this was a big reason why
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: and I know they didn't use it enough in the
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Super Bowl, but this was a big reason why the
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: Patriots went to six Z line is because the only
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: way that they could be a really good running team
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: is by getting an extra blocker on the field that
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: could actually, you know, really move weight because the tight
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: ends in the full back couldn't right. So that would
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: be my one hesitation with it. But if your argument
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: is that Drake May would love throwing to Kyle Pitts,
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: I agree.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: I think he would.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: I think Kyle Pitts is the exact type of receiver
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: Drake May would love throwing too. It's kind of just
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: like a tight end version of Mac Collins. You know,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: there's size, there's a catch radius, there's an explosiveness.
- 1:18:07Speaker 10: You know that.
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: All that stuff is great. So I'm not anti it.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: I just would like to, you know, the minutia point it,
- 1:18:13Speaker 1: I think is important. They need a tight end that
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: can block absolutely. Jared's in South Carolina. What's up, Jared?
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Jared? All right? Call us back, Jared and we'll get
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: you on. All right, Eldred, what's going on? Eldred?
- 1:18:31Speaker 11: Hey, how are we doing doing? I'm not doing too good.
- 1:18:37Speaker 11: But it's a couple of things that I sort of
- 1:18:40Speaker 11: disagree with y'all about. Y'all just can't believe to see
- 1:18:45Speaker 11: how the man for man on the front deep of
- 1:18:47Speaker 11: the line was way better than ow. I mean even
- 1:18:49Speaker 11: the people that rotated in. So it's mainly the players
- 1:18:53Speaker 11: and I think our quarterback got sped up and had
- 1:18:56Speaker 11: mental blocks because of a couple of those throws you
- 1:18:59Speaker 11: said he was missing, you know, like that back shoulder
- 1:19:02Speaker 11: to uh to the witch call, and he had he
- 1:19:06Speaker 11: had Stevenson in the flat and he's right there. He
- 1:19:09Speaker 11: just didn't see him. I think he gets sped up
- 1:19:11Speaker 11: and he just got you know, over him by that defense.
- 1:19:14Speaker 11: And when he was coming off the right side, the
- 1:19:17Speaker 11: slot corners was waving, but Drake didn't see him. You
- 1:19:20Speaker 11: were looking to the left, you know most of the time.
- 1:19:23Speaker 11: But but they young understand that they gonna get better
- 1:19:25Speaker 11: after after you know, this year, at least I hope
- 1:19:27Speaker 11: they do. But you're talking about whide receives the draft.
- 1:19:32Speaker 11: Still I'm still looking at Chris Brosaldi from Tennessee six
- 1:19:36Speaker 11: five four four four three. And that's another T Max
- 1:19:41Speaker 11: every market. Like I tell you about T Max the
- 1:19:43Speaker 11: first time, you laughed at me. So what you think now?
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: And I let not take it off the air, thanks, Aldred.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: I think that Drake may would have been on his butt,
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: and that would have been just like he wasn't ended
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: up being anyways. Anyways, what was the first point, oh about? Yeah,
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: like Seattle definitely was just a better team and one
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: up front. But like again, like what would so the
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: Patriots were just supposed to sit there and say, well,
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: they're just better than us, so we're just gonna take
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: our ball and go home. Like there was no adjustments
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: they could have made. There was no you know, schematic
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: tweaks that they could have made, Like, I just won't
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: accept that. I think too much of Mike Rabel and
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels. I think they're too capable as coaches to
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: just basically chalk it up to they were just better
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: than us and there was nothing we could have done
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: better coaching wise or schematically to try to help the
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: offensive line.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: We were just screwed.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Like, I just don't I think that that's I think
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: that there's more to it than that. I guess, like,
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: I just think that there's always an answer, There's always
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: something that you could do differently. I laid out like
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: ten things that they could have tried to do that
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: would have been different and would have maybe helped, and
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: they didn't really do any of them. So we all
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: can kind of sit here and say, full stop, Seattle
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: was just the better team and they won one on
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: one matchups and they their guys beat the Patriots guys.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Like absolutely positively true.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: But if you know that you're at a talent disadvantage,
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: then the coaching needs to do some things to help
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: out the talent, right, Like they need to help out
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: their guys and try to make life easier on them.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: And I just I didn't think they did a good
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: enough job of that. So I think both things can
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: be true. And we see it all the time, Like
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: there were probably times this year where the Patriots were
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: facing teams that had a little bit more talent than
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: they did, but coaching and you know, just vibes, frankly,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff just elevated the Patriots above
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: the opponent. Yeah, and this time they just couldn't do it.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: They just couldn't pull it out one more time. All right,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: let's get.
- 1:21:37Speaker 3: To some real quick to his last point, Chris Brasel, Yeah,
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: he is the latest Tennessee outside speaker, Dante Thornton, Dante Thornton,
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: John Hyatt, that player any interest. I mean, there's more aes,
- 1:21:51Speaker 3: not exact same play.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: I just think, like, like I was saying earlier, I'm
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: just kind of sick and tired of like throwing the
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: darts at the position. I I like, if you're gonna
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: going out and get a wide receiver and to like
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: go get one, that's.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: Gonna go get go get again.
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: I'm with you the day like the day two guys,
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: the flyer guys, like if they want to take guy
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: late lately whatever, but like they have Kyle Williams.
- 1:22:13Speaker 2: Kyle Williams, Booty and Pop, like those are those guys.
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: Those are the dark right.
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: If they're gonna go wide receiver, either go for it,
- 1:22:22Speaker 3: which by the way, they are probably out of range
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: for your guy, Mikayle Lemon now, so you know Casey
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: Conception own or Denzel Boston in the first round, or
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: go get it. If they're going to add a wide
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: receiver this offseason, to me, it's a veteran. It's an
- 1:22:34Speaker 3: established veteran. It's an AJ Brown kind of player.
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: Go trade for one, right, Go trade for one of
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: these guys that's disgruntled and wants to move. You know,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: I know Max Crosby wants to move to I would
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: love that move as well. You know what, whatever it takes,
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: this is they're in that position, you know, I think, yeah,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: we sort of talked about this, and I keep coming
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: back to this one particular trade when I the Cowboys
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: trade and Michael Parsons and people called into the show
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: and said, why weren't the Patriots and on Michael Parsons
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: and we all said, it's too early, like they're not
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: ready for that move yet. Then they went on and
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: they went fourteen and three and made the Super Bowl.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: Now I feel differently, they're in the They're in that
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: mode now. You know, Drake may is an MVP candidate,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: Mike Rabel is one of the best coaches in football.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: You know, they are in that position now that they
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: don't need the thirty first pick in the draft. If that,
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: if that picks traded for Max Crosby, that's a that's
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: a win now move that they should be interested in making.
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: So I look at the same way at wide receiver,
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: they don't need another Kyle Williams, and disrespect to Kyle Williams.
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: They just have you have Kyle Willias, like you have
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: your developmental speedster that they can hopefully you know.
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:23:41Speaker 3: And it's not like we kind of went against that
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: a little bit last year, but it was it wasn't
- 1:23:47Speaker 3: it was different front office, right, Yeah, Uh, you know,
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: because with with like Jalen Polk and and and uh
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: how quick you forget uh Bakers Baker, I think that
- 1:23:58Speaker 3: you know, this is the group that drafted Kyle Williams.
- 1:24:00Speaker 3: Now it's like you drafted him the top one hundred.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: I think Kyle Williams, and it's not Jalen Polk had
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: flashes like in his training cap right very early on
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: his rookie season. I think Kyle, Kyle Pitts, Kyle Williams
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: has shown a little bit more than Oh.
- 1:24:14Speaker 3: Yes, no, I don't mean to compare them as players.
- 1:24:16Speaker 3: I just mean it in the sense of, like I'm
- 1:24:18Speaker 3: very big on you draft a guy in the top
- 1:24:20Speaker 3: one hundred, you don't give up on him after a year. Yeah,
- 1:24:23Speaker 3: last year was an exception because the people in charge
- 1:24:25Speaker 3: weren't the people who drafted those players. It's not there's
- 1:24:28Speaker 3: carry over this year. We haven't done a carryover off
- 1:24:30Speaker 3: season in a little bit here, Evan, So.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: There should be coaching staff carry over too. So it's
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: not they're not going to be changing systems again.
- 1:24:36Speaker 3: They're not going to be doing that, right, So I
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: think you, you know, Kyle Williams deserves a longer look
- 1:24:40Speaker 3: here Okay.
- 1:24:41Speaker 2: Let's get to some of these emails.
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: I feel like, you know, like I'm trying to like
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: get this this weight lifted off my shoulders of like
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: the frustration from that that offensive game planet, and I'm
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: trying to like just like wash it away.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, so let's get to some of these.
- 1:24:57Speaker 3: Let's get into the emails. U.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: This is Barton Poland emails in with the point that
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: I've been kind of hammering home with Will Campbell a
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: little bit as well. He says, I think we should
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: slow down a bit with the treating Campbell's move to
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: guard as some kind of automatic fix or a guarantee
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: he suddenly becomes an all pro. This is a good,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: well thought out email, bart that's very long, but he
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: kind of points to some of the different nuances between
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: guard and tackle, and I could not agree more. Like
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: I understand from some respects, and I think the thing
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: about guard versus tackle with Campbell kind of goes back
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: to mentality. Like people just think that he has the
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: mentality of a guard, right, Like he's the one of
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: those kind of like nasty finishers that you know, has
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: a little bit of an edge and plays with a
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: little bit of an attitude and like typically that like
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: kind of like tone setting mindset mentality is lends itself
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: more to guard than it does to tackle, Like you
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: hear that more with guards and tackles from a skill
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: set standpoint, I just I keep coming back. I just
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: don't really know what fixes anything automatically by moving him
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: inside other than the fact that maybe you know, you
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: don't it's more of a car crash inside than it
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: is like a dance on the outside. So maybe his length,
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: like it kind of would cover up that element a
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: little bit. But when I watch Campbell's set, like he
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: sets hot like he's a higher cut athlete.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: You know, he's got great feet, he's got great you
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: know balance in his movements.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I don't necessarily look at a guy as like him,
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: as like a guy that's going to like get underneath
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: people and leverage and drive them and you know win,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: you know, with power in the in a phone booth,
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: like you want to put a guy that's getting put
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: on skates at tackle and how you want to put
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: him inside and have him blocked three hundred and thirty
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: pound defensive tackles, Like I just I'm with bart, I
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: don't know. I don't know if this is just an
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: automatic And I know everybody says, oh, I think he
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: could be an all pro card. I know they don't
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: aren't saying it's automatic that he's going to be an
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: all pro guard. But I don't think it's even automatic
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: that he would be a better guard. Like I think
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: that there's a possibility that there's deficiencies at guard that
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: would he would struggle with. So that's why I even
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: furtherly feel strongly about keeping him at tackle and just
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: working at it at tackle.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: How do you feel about that?
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I just go back to he wasn't he was
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: fine before he got hurt. He wasn't great, but he
- 1:27:28Speaker 3: was fine before he got hurt. And yeah, you give
- 1:27:31Speaker 3: him a full year in an NFL weight program, You
- 1:27:32Speaker 3: give them a full off season developed, you work on
- 1:27:34Speaker 3: some of the technique stuff, You let him get healthy.
- 1:27:38Speaker 3: If I'm gonna keep going back to this all off season,
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: you want to call in to say need move Will
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: Campbell to guard for who who? You can't get worse
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: than left tackle? Just to prove a point, right, So
- 1:27:50Speaker 3: you know, I'm not entirely opposed the idea. I think
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: it's a lot more complicated than people make it for Campbell,
- 1:27:56Speaker 3: and then what are you doing at left tackle? Putting
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: for Darien Lowe back there? You can dip into the draft.
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: I mean, there's some guys higher, but you're picking thirty first.
- 1:28:04Speaker 3: You know it just it probably causes more problems than
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: it solves. Give him the full off season in an
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: NFL weight program, let him get healthy, and then see
- 1:28:13Speaker 3: where he's at, because I think he has the ability
- 1:28:17Speaker 3: to improve a lot this offseason.
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: So this is a question from Greg who says that
- 1:28:22Speaker 2: he's been a fan of ours since the Patriots beat days,
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: So I appreciate that, Greg, thank you. He asks, would
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: you consider adding Eagles former Eagles offensive line coach Jeff
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: Stoutlin to the coaching staff next year? And to that,
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: first of all, Staltlin is one of the best offensive
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: line coaches of his era, certainly one of the most
- 1:28:47Speaker 2: respected coaches and technique guys now. The falling out in Philadelphia.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: We had Ben Solac on during Super Bowl Week and
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: he kind of outlined this perfectly had to do with
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: schematically in the run game. So the way that Jeff Stalin,
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: he was their run game coordinator as well towards the
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: end of his tenure with Philadelphia. The way that Jeff
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: Stalin schemes the run game doesn't lend itself to a
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: lot of the new bells and whistles that go on
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: run games these days, like motions and things like that.
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: It's a very stagnant approach, and I think that the
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: Eagles felt Sean Manyon, right, that's the coordinator that they hired,
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: He felt like it was a little bit outdated what
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: Jeff Stalin was doing in terms of the x's and
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: o's of the run game. Not so much like the
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: techniques and the teaching and all that kind of stuff,
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: but just the way that they designed their run game
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: was a little bit outdated from the current NFL where
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: you see all these motions and all this different misdirection
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: and eye candy and all that good stuff. So I
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: think Jeff Stalin would be an to any coaching staff
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: from a coaching teaching technique standpoint. Would it solve their
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: problems though schematically? Would it make them better? You know,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: that's a different type of question because I think that
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: we all are kind of pushing for Josh McDaniels.
- 1:30:14Speaker 2: To be a little bit more.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Modern and innovative and things like that with the way
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: that he designs the offense.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: I think Staltland is being looked at, at least by
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: the Eagles as kind of a dinosaur in that regard.
- 1:30:31Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, but he's still fantastic coach in the position.
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: He got a lot of young players. The talent development
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: is important. I wouldn't be against it. I don't know.
- 1:30:41Speaker 3: There's a lot of nuance there, like is he replacing
- 1:30:43Speaker 3: Doug Moron, is he joining Doug Moron? Or are they
- 1:30:45Speaker 3: gonna have a run game coordinator? I need more context,
- 1:30:48Speaker 3: but the answer is not no.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: Okay, other question I wanted to ask you if this
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: is kind of related to coaching staff. Yeah, this is
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: a hard question to answer. I concede that what are
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: you doing at the defensive coordinator? Mike Rabel was noncommittal
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: about it yesterday, understandably, so it sounds like Terrell Williams
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: is hoping that he's going to be medically clear to
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: return to coaching.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: Maybe we'll get some more answers in a couple of
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: weeks when Rabel speaks at the Combine, which is two
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: weeks away. I booked my flight yesterday it's insane. Uh,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: but maybe we'll get some more answers then about it.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Is there a world where I'm trying to wrap my
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: head around this world where they're kind of codecs and
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: Zach Korr is still the play caller and Zach Korr
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: is still doing what he did. I don't want to
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: break what Zach Korr was doing this year, right, but
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: just kind of like I think what happened towards the
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: end here once Terrell Williams, Uh, luckily and thankfully you know,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: got in better health.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: Terrell Williams was around and.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: He was advising, and he was helping and you know,
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: lending a hand where he could you know, is that
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: a possible path of you know, Terrell Williams is kind
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: of like the overseer. He's kind of, you know, the
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: a high level quality control coach, if you will, And
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Zach Korr is the play caller and the guy actually
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: you know, calling the defense.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:32:12Speaker 3: I mean, look, they've done this before, right, Yeah, they
- 1:32:16Speaker 3: now that was obviously a different head coach, but Bill
- 1:32:18Speaker 3: did it with Girod and with Steve Belichick. I like
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: to keep both of them in the building. I think
- 1:32:22Speaker 3: they both do a good job.
- 1:32:24Speaker 7: You know.
- 1:32:24Speaker 3: The weird thing is if Core doesn't get hired away,
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: you're not gonna like let him go, right, He's still here,
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: So that thing's looming you. You have to do something
- 1:32:34Speaker 3: with it. Because let's say they come out in the
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: first game, Troll Williams, the defensive corner of the defense
- 1:32:38Speaker 3: gets knocked around a.
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: Little bit, just like it did against the Raiders.
- 1:32:41Speaker 3: Right, there's gonna be a bunch of questions about, well,
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: you know, d want Zach Corr calling plays with you,
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: Zak whatever, whatever, whatever, So you gotta do something, like
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: you said, It's not an easy answer, and it's probably
- 1:32:51Speaker 3: one of the tougher decisions I're going have to make
- 1:32:53Speaker 3: this offseason. There's also an element of Trell Williams health
- 1:32:56Speaker 3: that we just don't know publicly, which he's ever right
- 1:33:00Speaker 3: to keep that private. It's not a knock. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:33:04Speaker 3: that's a tricky one. I I'd like Zach cordiky Colm plays.
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: You would absolutely hate in any way, shape or form
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: for a guy to lose his job because he had cancer, Like,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: that's not gonna happen.
- 1:33:15Speaker 3: Can he become like a senior assistant advisor kind of?
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: Well, that's why I.
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: Threw out the co defensive coordinators thing. You know, that
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: is essentially the role that Terell Williams would be going
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: into without taking the title away, And maybe that that's
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: the cleanest way to do this, so that you know,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: it's not fair to the guy to take away his
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: title because he got sick, Like that's not right. So
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: maybe that's the best way to do it. But I
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: think clearly Zach Korr grew into the role to the
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: point where he deserves to keep the play calling responsibilities.
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: I mean, they were dynamite the entire playoff run, So
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: to take that away from him, I think would be
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: tough as well. All right, here's a little off season.
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: Would you rather all right, so would you rather sign
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: a great blocking title end or receiving Titans Darnett Washington
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: a free agent?
- 1:34:03Speaker 5: No?
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: I think he has another year. Yeah, I want Darnet
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: Washington on the Patriots.
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't think he's a free agent. Maybe I'm wrong.
- 1:34:09Speaker 3: About that, because wasn't he the Gonzales Draft? I thought so, Yeah,
- 1:34:13Speaker 3: he's entering contract here.
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: So Darnell Washington's the name that the set the emailer
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: floated out. Just put a blocking tight end here, and
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: then he also mentions, you know, Kyle Pitts or Isaiah Likely,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: Like which one would you rather?
- 1:34:27Speaker 3: Probably receiving tight end, but like I'd rather a guy
- 1:34:30Speaker 3: that's maybe a little less at each and better at
- 1:34:33Speaker 3: you know, the collective, just a more well rounded player. Yeah,
- 1:34:36Speaker 3: I don't know, that's kind of it's a.
- 1:34:39Speaker 2: I'm with you.
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: I think that right now as we sit here, the
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: well rounded tight end is one of the most valuable
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: pieces in football. Yeah, Like I look at Seattle, and
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: I look at what A J. Barner just did in
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. Like that player, I understold AJ Barner.
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: I should have talked about him more. And a lead
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: up to this game, we were also caught up in
- 1:35:02Speaker 1: JSN and Rashid Jaheed and all these other guys Kenneth Walker.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: AJ Barner's ability to block and catch passes was a huge,
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: huge advantage.
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: For here's free agent tight ends. Yeah, Kyle Pitts, Yeah,
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: Dallas Goddard. I like Dallas got Travis Kelcey, Isaiah Likely,
- 1:35:19Speaker 3: David Joku, Chigakonquo, Charlie Kohler, Darren Waller, Austin Hooper, Kate Auton,
- 1:35:26Speaker 3: Mercedes Lewis, Chris Man, Hurts, Moalley Cox, Oh, Jesus keeps going.
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: So I really like Dallas Goddard, Dallas Gott It would
- 1:35:34Speaker 3: make a lot of sense.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: I don't know why.
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: I don't know why Philly wouldn't let Dallas Goddard walk
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: new offense, But I really like Dallas Goddard. He will
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: be He just turned thirty one last monk. Okay, He's
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: getting up there in age, So that might be why
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: I would expect, based off of the connection in Cleveland,
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: that David and Joku might be someone they would consider.
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: But that's not getting any younger at the position. That's
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: just a different type of player. But he's certainly what
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: do you mean, David and Joku.
- 1:36:05Speaker 3: Yeah, he's twenty nine already.
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: Yeah wow, Yeah, I thought he was thirty, but he's.
- 1:36:09Speaker 3: Going into his age thirty season. I did not realize that.
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: I like David and Joku because he's he's got that
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: explosiveness down the field, like he's got a little bit
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: more juice up to seem things like that. But he
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: is getting a little bit up there in age. And
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: I would think Kate Aughten is like a sneaky one
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: that could be on.
- 1:36:25Speaker 3: There, like going back to you know, watching when Brady
- 1:36:28Speaker 3: was there.
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: He's kind of like a young he's younger than Hunter Henry, right.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: I think he's kind of reminds me a little bit
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: of Hunter Henry.
- 1:36:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I think this is I think he's coming off
- 1:36:35Speaker 3: as rookie deal.
- 1:36:36Speaker 2: So if you know that, that's another option there is.
- 1:36:40Speaker 3: He'll turn twenty seven in April.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: Yeah, so that that one.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: He's probably not as like highly thought of as Hunter
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: Henry was when he signed here in twenty one, but
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: I think they're similar.
- 1:36:51Speaker 2: You go get to player where you.
- 1:36:52Speaker 3: Know, he had fifty nine catches five hundred and seventy
- 1:36:55Speaker 3: two yards this year. Like that's a tight end, solid
- 1:36:58Speaker 3: pretty That goes back to to the email point. Give
- 1:37:00Speaker 3: me the guy that's maybe not elite at pass catching
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: or blocking, but can do a little bit of everything.
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: I just like I said before, the whole the whole
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: game now offensively is finding ways to get the defense
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: to go into base personnel like these defenses and part
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: of the reason why Seattle was so dominant. These uh,
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: these pass defenses and nickel and dime defense are just
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: too good. Their pressures are too good. Ye, their their
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: coverage rules like defense in a lot of ways. And
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: this is something that's I guarantee you somebody like Jordan
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: rodrieg or someone's gonna write about this this offseason. I'm
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: gonna be like, damn, that's a that's a great piece.
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: That's a great idea.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: I would say defenses right now schematically are ahead of offenses.
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: It was the other way for a long time, Like
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: the Shanahan Tree offenses came in and uh, you know,
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan and Sean mcvayh and all those guys started
- 1:37:52Speaker 1: to really innovate with motion and things like that, and
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: those guys really were ahead.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: Of the curve.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: Defenses have now corrected towards that, and I would say
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: have actually lapped offenses in a lot of ways. I
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: think the biggest one is defense is now, especially good
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: defenses like McDonald and Jesse Minter and these guys, they
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: have such a great understanding of protection rules and how
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: teams are trying to block things and how to blow
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: up blocking schemes that offenses. Offenses are going to have
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: to work really hard to find different ways to block things.
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: And I think that that's exactly what we saw with
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: Seattle this entire run, you know, as much as I
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: just kind of craft on the Patriots and their game plan.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: Like Kyle Shannon scored like three points against this defense
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: a couple of weeks ago in the divisional round. Like
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: this is not a new thing at all with the
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Seattle defense. So that's an interesting piece of this is,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: you know, how do offenses sort of counter the way
- 1:38:48Speaker 1: defense are playing? You know, defense is now I think
- 1:38:52Speaker 1: a couple of big things that they're doing up front
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: because they're playing so many two high safeties and they're
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: lightning the box defense to stop the pass. You see
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: a lot of like stunting and gap penetration on the
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: defensive line. And then they're also adding linebackers from the
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: second level to fire because they're trying to take gaps
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: back because they're playing a gap short in the run game.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: So they're trying to do all these different things, whether
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: it's stunting, gap penetrations, slanting the line. You know, they'll
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: slant the line and they'll blitz the off ball linebacker
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: to kind of fill the backside of the slant. Like
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: they have all these different things that they're doing because
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: they're trying to get penetration to play a gap down
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: in the run game, and offenses right now just haven't
- 1:39:35Speaker 1: really figured out great counters to all these different things.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: So the obvious counter to playing, you know, teams that
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: play so much too high safety is to run the ball.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: But because of all this aggressive front mechanics that defenses
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: are running, Seattle is number one run defense in football
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: despite playing the most too high structures in the league.
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: That's broken, Like that's not supposed to happen. If you
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: lighten the box like that, you're supposed to give up
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: rush yards and surrender rush yard and Seattle just doesn't.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: So what's you know, offenses counters like I'm surprised you
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: know that they don't use more, uh, you know, pullers
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: to the edge, Like if you can pull to the
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: edge and add blockers to the edge, you can kind
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: of crease the defense that way. You know, there's different
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: things that you can kind of do like that. That
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: it's just one example, but for a long period of time.
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: You know, me, I'm obsessed with all the Shanahan guys.
- 1:40:27Speaker 1: I'm obsessed with Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Mike McDaniel, Matt
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: leafloor Is really good. Like all these guys are all,
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: you know, really good at what they do. Uh, they're
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: getting kind of owned right now. And it would started
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: sort of with the Fangio stuff.
- 1:40:43Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: And now these uh you know, newer head coaches and
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: defensive coordinators, you know, defensive minds, they're taking the Fangio
- 1:40:51Speaker 1: thing and now they're adding pressure to it. Like Fan
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: Fangio is a very structured defensive coach. He doesn't bring
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: a lot of blitzes. The these guys are taking that
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: as like the structure of the defense and they're adding
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: pressure packages on top of it.
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: It's killing offenses. I mean it really is.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: So I'm fascinated to see what all these people do,
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: these coordinators do in the offseason to try to combat
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: all this.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: Leo is an acting what's up, Leo?
- 1:41:21Speaker 5: Hey, what's going on? I was just referring to the
- 1:41:24Speaker 5: off season. I think left guard is the most important thing,
- 1:41:28Speaker 5: followed by the pass catchers. I know a lot of
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: people want Crosby, but I don't think it's smart to
- 1:41:33Speaker 5: trade a bunch of premium assets for an edge when
- 1:41:35Speaker 5: I think there's better options than free agency. Well I'm
- 1:41:39Speaker 5: not better, but more affordable and more friendly for team
- 1:41:43Speaker 5: building when you could use those assets to address the
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: offense that just average. I think it was like one
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: point for Drive, which was worse than the twenty sixteen
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: Browns in the playoffs. So yeah, I'm curious what you
- 1:41:55Speaker 5: guys think.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: Yeah, Leo, I mean, look, the offense was definitely the
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: reason why they flamed out in the Super Bowl like that.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: The offense is the biggest problem in that sort of respect.
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: My only pushback would be, you can only do what's available, right,
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: You can only make the trades that are available. So
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: we talk about this every off season. You can't It's
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: the mystery box thing, like you can't just create the player.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: So as much as I would love to sit here
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: and say they need a veteran left guard, they need
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: a number one wide receiver, those things have to come
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: to fruition. Now, the left guard things seems more doable
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: because there's usually guards that you can sign that you
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: can acquire in some way.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Shame for guards.
- 1:42:35Speaker 5: Here we go.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: Yeah, Isaac Smalo okay from the Steelers, yep, David Edwards
- 1:42:42Speaker 3: from the Bills, Elijah vera Tucker that would be an
- 1:42:44Speaker 3: interesting one from the Jets, Joel Potonio. How old's he now?
- 1:42:50Speaker 3: Twelve year vet? Yeah, he's got to be up there,
- 1:42:52Speaker 3: Kevin Zeitler, another older guy, Greg Van Rotten, Dalton Reisner,
- 1:42:57Speaker 3: Dylan parhum At, Ingram Wyatt, Teller and then it kind
- 1:43:00Speaker 3: of falls off. So Ian Johnson remember that traf.
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: Yeah, so I don't love any of those options. Maybe
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: the trademarket, you know, would be more if they just
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: Tucker's not bad. They just acquired Joe Tune, This would
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: have been all right, although what it's worth Yep, what
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: was Tony go for a fourth round pick something like that?
- 1:43:20Speaker 3: That was Craig Woodson.
- 1:43:22Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: Uh, you know, Barry Tucker's not a bad one. I
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: think he's played right most of his career if I'm
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: not mistaken. Maybe I've made that up. I can't remember
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: exactly because he's played a little bit of tackle and
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: he's played a little bit of guard. Yeah, and he
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: played tackle at USC, but he's a guard. He might
- 1:43:39Speaker 1: have been a left guard. That might have been a
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: tackle to left guard.
- 1:43:42Speaker 3: I think he's been hurt too, right, Yeah, he played
- 1:43:45Speaker 3: his entire rookie season at left and then it's been
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: right since.
- 1:43:48Speaker 2: Okay, so.
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: Play last year was hurt.
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: So yeah, so as much as I you know, agree
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: wholeheartedly that if you look at the team and look
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: at the playoff r on, the offense was the issue
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: and not the defense.
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: You can only trade for who's available.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: So if you would decide that you want to make
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: a big splash trade, let's just say you put thirty
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: one up for auction and you say, you know, we're
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: going to trade a first round pick for a star player.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: If Max Crosby is the best player that you can
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: get with that pick, then you're trading for Max Cross.
- 1:44:22Speaker 3: So let me ask you this. This is probably gonna
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: be somewh're gonna do all off season. So we're gonna
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: lock it.
- 1:44:26Speaker 6: J J.
- 1:44:27Speaker 3: Brown or Max Crosby.
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: I lean Max Crosby.
- 1:44:31Speaker 3: I would go Crosby.
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: And it's not because, again I just said, the offense
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: has the bigger ways to go.
- 1:44:37Speaker 3: Crosby's a better player, and I just think.
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: Crosby is a great culture fit and what they have.
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: I think Crosby is a vable guy. You know, he
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: said on a podcast recently, and I fully believe him.
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: His alarm goes off at four fifty five every single morning.
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: He drives to the Raiders facility and he works out
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: in the morning and then he's there all day. Yeah,
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: working on his craft like that is a culture building
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: Rabel type of guy.
- 1:45:04Speaker 2: Where A J. Brown also played for Mike Rabel and
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: Max Crosby did it.
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: AJ Brown played for Mike Rabel, So maybe Mike Rabel
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: the best out of it, get the best out of him,
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: or knows that some of this other crap is nonsense.
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: You know that gets talked about with AJ Brown, but
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: you just you know. AJ Brown was on a pretty
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: good team this year and was upset the entire season,
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: you know, and it just I would rather Max Crosby.
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: I think I believe Max Crosby too. How about this
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: one we go back to that, would you rather AJ
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: Brown or Brian Thomas Jr. Oh, I think I'd go
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: be A J. Brown there, Well, Brian Thomas Junior shouldn't
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: cost you as much as he's younger.
- 1:45:48Speaker 3: I Michael, Brian Thomas Jr. Michael for the younger. I
- 1:45:51Speaker 3: know Rabel has the familiarated Brown. So here's the thing.
- 1:45:55Speaker 3: To me, for one year, A J. Brown's probably better.
- 1:45:58Speaker 3: But we're gonna talk about getting the receiver that Drake
- 1:46:00Speaker 3: may like grows with right and develops with and you
- 1:46:03Speaker 3: know the guy that's going to be his guy for
- 1:46:06Speaker 3: the next you know, five or six years. Howard's AJ Brown.
- 1:46:09Speaker 3: Now it's not is he thirty?
- 1:46:11Speaker 2: No, he's like twenty seven, twenty eight?
- 1:46:14Speaker 3: Is he going He's going to his age twenty nine season?
- 1:46:16Speaker 3: Howlds Brian Thomas.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: He just I mean it's his only second year in
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: the LA.
- 1:46:20Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I guess I thought A. J. Brown was
- 1:46:21Speaker 3: a little older than he is. He's going into his
- 1:46:23Speaker 3: age twenty four season. Brian toal, I like the idea
- 1:46:26Speaker 3: of the twenty four year old that's going to grow
- 1:46:27Speaker 3: with Drake May long term there, that's a lot cheaper.
- 1:46:30Speaker 3: He's on a rookie deal. So I'd probably go Brian
- 1:46:34Speaker 3: Thomas for the long term. But if you're like, no,
- 1:46:38Speaker 3: we want to get back this year, blah blah blah whatever. Yeah,
- 1:46:41Speaker 3: I'd obviously want to get back to Super Bowl. But
- 1:46:43Speaker 3: I'm saying, like, if you want the short term approaches,
- 1:46:44Speaker 3: like no, we need to capitalize on him right now. Yeah,
- 1:46:46Speaker 3: I'd probably go A J. Brown, but I think Brian
- 1:46:48Speaker 3: Thomas a better long term investment.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: I agree with that.
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: I also would say that Brian Thomas Junior's best trick
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: is running fades from the slot, and I wouldn't mind
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: s Drake Mate dimes to Brown that route on slot fades.
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: I mean, that's what Brian Thomas Junior did at LSU
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: with Jayden Daniels and Melik Neighbors.
- 1:47:09Speaker 3: Me, why are the Jaguars training Bri Thomas again?
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: It was a weird year for him last year, but
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: I would agree, and I would also say that I'm
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: pretty sure the reporting right now is that Travis Hunter
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: is gonna play corner when he comes back from injury
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: next year, So don't I don't know now, he had
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: a weird year last year, BTJ did. It wasn't a
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: good sophomore season.
- 1:47:29Speaker 3: He was hurt.
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: He was kind of like not some of the film
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: was kind of you know, just like jogging through routes
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: and stuff like that. It was a little like not
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: as like demonstrative, but some of the things that you
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: hear about like George Pickens, you know, like taking plays off,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: like not fully bought in. But granted you could say
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: the same thing about aj Bri.
- 1:47:51Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a part of me like twenty three
- 1:47:53Speaker 3: year old thousand yard rookie receiver and they're already ready
- 1:47:56Speaker 3: to move on from what do they know that I
- 1:47:58Speaker 3: don't unlike fair enough.
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: Now, I think that Stefan Diggs was a pretty good
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: citizen here, and we all had doubts about that. So okay,
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: I'll say to get people overblew that.
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: Yeah, but maybe we're overblowing it about aj Brown or
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: maybe all right, you know, that's just the point I'm
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: trying to.
- 1:48:16Speaker 3: Make, I guess. All right, So since we both said
- 1:48:19Speaker 3: Brian Thomas junior, Brian Thomas Junior, Max Crosby, I just.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: Love the idea of christ I know, I don't know why.
- 1:48:26Speaker 3: Like it's not because if you have a guy that
- 1:48:28Speaker 3: can get pressure that consistently that quickly, I know, Christian
- 1:48:31Speaker 3: Gonzalez and Carlton Davis on the outside and go An
- 1:48:33Speaker 3: intercepting a million footballs.
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: Melton Williams and Barmar were inside causing the push in
- 1:48:38Speaker 2: the middle. And so I I.
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: It's counterintuitive to a lot of the things that I
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: feel because like I'm a big offense guy, and I
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: know I'm surprised they just scored like sixteen points a
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: game in the playoffs, and I'm saying, go add to
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: the defense.
- 1:48:52Speaker 2: But it comes back to just like who can you
- 1:48:54Speaker 2: who's the best player?
- 1:48:55Speaker 3: You know about collecting talent, it's about building.
- 1:48:58Speaker 2: A team, right, and he's the best player.
- 1:49:00Speaker 3: You add Max, well, that's collecting town. But like you
- 1:49:02Speaker 3: add Max Crosby the d What did we say? What
- 1:49:05Speaker 3: did we just say about the defense in the Super Bowl?
- 1:49:07Speaker 3: They played well in the sense that they prevented the
- 1:49:09Speaker 3: Seahawks from doing a lot. But they didn't and this
- 1:49:11Speaker 3: is kind of case all year.
- 1:49:12Speaker 2: They didn't make the impact.
- 1:49:13Speaker 3: They didn't make places, they prevented the offense from making plays.
- 1:49:16Speaker 3: They didn't make plays themselves. That's that next level. You
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: out a guy like Max Crosby to this defense, suddenly
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: they're gonna make a ton of plays.
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, here's an email from Kyle. This is
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: the biggest needs in the first round and he has
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: three positions and he wants us to rank. Okay, I
- 1:49:31Speaker 1: feel like this is the question we're gonna get. This
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: is the Is this the big three needs of the offseason?
- 1:49:35Speaker 6: Uh?
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: If the Patriots stick and pick at thirty one, which
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: position would you prioritize edge wide receiver, offensive line. I
- 1:49:44Speaker 1: mean it depends was on the board, right, Like, okay,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: let's just say it's the same play we're gonna have
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: because this is the way we're gonna get this. We're
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: gonna have to do the weird thing about like what's
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: the deal with ruben Bain.
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: Rubenmate is not falling at thirty one.
- 1:49:58Speaker 3: I I like Mesador, the other guy from Miami for
- 1:50:01Speaker 3: what it's worth, you know, all things considered, Probably wide receiver,
- 1:50:08Speaker 3: like I said earlier, if they're gonna take a swing,
- 1:50:10Speaker 3: I'd want to take the big swing. I do late
- 1:50:11Speaker 3: Casey conception own there, especially if you know, we gotta
- 1:50:14Speaker 3: see what's gonna have with Diggs contract. Probably receiver because
- 1:50:21Speaker 3: like you said, like they could get a starting left
- 1:50:25Speaker 3: guard there, and that's probably the safest pick. I know
- 1:50:27Speaker 3: your thing about guards in the first round, but nope,
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: just based on who's available, Like that should be a veteran.
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: They need a starting left guard, but that should be
- 1:50:34Speaker 3: a veteran. I like Emmanuel Pregnant, he'd probably be the guy.
- 1:50:40Speaker 3: I'd probably go a receiver, but like realistically, in terms
- 1:50:44Speaker 3: of who the guys are that will probably be on
- 1:50:46Speaker 3: the board at that point. Wide receiver versus edge. I
- 1:50:49Speaker 3: like the edge players better for them.
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: Okay, can you just look at it as like you
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: just have a Madden Creative player that's an eighty overall
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: at all three positions. We're not talking about. I'm trying
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: to put it in your terms because they're not talking about.
- 1:51:04Speaker 2: Here's the thing. I think it's better, you know realistically
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: that no, just.
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: I think an eighty overall edge helps them more than
- 1:51:10Speaker 3: eighty overall wide receiver, because I think they have some
- 1:51:12Speaker 3: eighty overall wide receivers. If we're talking about like into
- 1:51:15Speaker 3: the nineties, Like yeah, okay, a ninety overall wide receiver
- 1:51:18Speaker 3: helps them more in a ninety overall edge. That's different.
- 1:51:21Speaker 3: So it depends on what you think of some of
- 1:51:22Speaker 3: those guys that are on the board.
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: On the I'm not looking at offensive line the same
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: way as everybody else. Maybe I have a rose colored glasses.
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: I really like the room this year.
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: Here's what they like the guys.
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Maybe that's part of it. I need to put some
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: separation between, you know what, the guys that we've gotten
- 1:51:38Speaker 1: to know in the locker room this year, who have
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: all are all really good guys, and the actual hard
- 1:51:42Speaker 1: decisions you have to make. I'm still looking at the
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: offensive line. No, is like I would like to upgrade
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: one interior position.
- 1:51:48Speaker 3: Here's here's what I matt with the offensive line. They
- 1:51:50Speaker 3: need a starting left guard. Yeah, they could probably get
- 1:51:52Speaker 3: that in the draft, but I'm with you, I think
- 1:51:54Speaker 3: that should be Veteran. Yeah. So well, if they don't
- 1:51:56Speaker 3: end up with that guy in fre agency, yeah, it'll
- 1:51:58Speaker 3: become a serious discussion leading up to the draft. Let's
- 1:52:01Speaker 3: see what they do in free agency. The other thing
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: they need to address is a long term answer at
- 1:52:05Speaker 3: right tackle. Yes, whoever that is.
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: I think they're in the school though not to cut
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: you off at right tackle where it's like that's probably
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: a developmental pick this year, and like you know the
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: middle rounds, like the third or fourth round, where you
- 1:52:19Speaker 1: try to take like a tools the guy that you
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: can develop behind Morgan Moses. If it doesn't work out,
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: then obviously, you know, once Morgan Moses decides to retire
- 1:52:27Speaker 1: or whatever, that's when you have to go all in
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: and addressing right So this is what I was going
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: to say, Do you have a little bit of time
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: there is if.
- 1:52:34Speaker 3: You want to get aggressive about that. Let's say you're
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: somebody to know they have to get the guy Morgan
- 1:52:38Speaker 3: mo is gonna be thirty five. You know a guy
- 1:52:40Speaker 3: that's not a Day one but maybe your one guy. Yeah, Max,
- 1:52:44Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to learn this, I guess in the hatch.
- 1:52:47Speaker 3: Or is the guy from Arizona State had a really
- 1:52:50Speaker 3: good Senior Bowl. He didn't start playing football until he
- 1:52:55Speaker 3: was a think sixteen high school something like that. It's
- 1:52:58Speaker 3: a big time soccer player.
- 1:53:00Speaker 6: He is.
- 1:53:01Speaker 3: I'm trying to find his official combine measurement. He's listed
- 1:53:03Speaker 3: at six six three thirty. I think he's bigger than that. Yeah,
- 1:53:08Speaker 3: he is the the We have a couple of these
- 1:53:10Speaker 3: guys every year completely totally. Raw has outstanding play, strength, plays, nasty,
- 1:53:16Speaker 3: high motor all that has the size. He just needs
- 1:53:20Speaker 3: to learn how to play football basically.
- 1:53:22Speaker 2: And oh that's just not nothing. You know, that's just
- 1:53:25Speaker 2: a small thing. Learn how to play the sport.
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: Well, there's been there's been guys that have worked out
- 1:53:30Speaker 3: like that. Yeah, right now. He was originally supposed to
- 1:53:33Speaker 3: be like a fringe top one hundred pick, which you
- 1:53:36Speaker 3: know that guy in that spot. Sure you talk about
- 1:53:39Speaker 3: trying to find my lot on the Eagles. Yeah, the
- 1:53:42Speaker 3: really good combine probably now if you take him, you're
- 1:53:45Speaker 3: gonna have to take him in the second round, and
- 1:53:47Speaker 3: for the Patriots it might be trading up. So but
- 1:53:50Speaker 3: if you have a year to develop him behind Morgan Moses,
- 1:53:53Speaker 3: maybe feel good about that. It's just about you know,
- 1:53:56Speaker 3: if you think you're gonna need him year one, it
- 1:53:58Speaker 3: gets a little tougher. I'm trying to combine measurement.
- 1:54:00Speaker 2: So I think what I would do with the I
- 1:54:03Speaker 2: agree that these are probably their three biggest.
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: But he's gonna be He's You're you're gonna to be
- 1:54:06Speaker 3: ready because he's gonna be.
- 1:54:07Speaker 6: Uh.
- 1:54:08Speaker 3: I keep saying combine seniable measurement. That's why I can't
- 1:54:10Speaker 3: find it. He's gonna be somebody we're talking about.
- 1:54:14Speaker 2: Why.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: So I would say with the offensive line, I would
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: look to sign another veteran try six.
- 1:54:19Speaker 3: Five three, twenty five, thirty four and is that arm
- 1:54:23Speaker 3: life thirty four and a half in charms.
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: I can't believe we're doing this already. Uh, offensive line,
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: I would sign a garden free agency. I try to
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: sign up with you on the left garden free agency.
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: Then I go big game hunting at edge and wide receiver. Yeah,
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: in the veteran market, make a move for one of
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: those two and then in whichever one I.
- 1:54:43Speaker 3: Don't get, that's your first round pick. Yeah, and then
- 1:54:46Speaker 3: probably round that out, you know, take get get a
- 1:54:49Speaker 3: developmental tackle somewhere on day two, tight end. This is
- 1:54:53Speaker 3: there is some good like late third, early fourth, like
- 1:54:56Speaker 3: late day two, early day three corners. They do need
- 1:54:59Speaker 3: another boundary corner. Maybe you get a guy with some
- 1:55:01Speaker 3: upside that can eventually step in for Carlton Davis and
- 1:55:05Speaker 3: that could be your top one hundred right there.
- 1:55:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:55:07Speaker 3: I don't think I missed anything.
- 1:55:08Speaker 2: I said tight end, right yeah, something like that I
- 1:55:11Speaker 2: think is probably uh, you know what I would do.
- 1:55:14Speaker 2: I I don't know.
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: I just feel as though those are probably your three
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: biggest needs. But I just I'm gonna be go down
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: with the chip on offensive line. I can feel it already.
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: I just don't think that it's I don't think they
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: need multiple starters.
- 1:55:28Speaker 2: I think they need one.
- 1:55:29Speaker 3: You need one starter and you need one projectable starter.
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but I am starting Morgan Moses at right tackle.
- 1:55:37Speaker 3: Now, h yeah. Yeah, but it would you know it's
- 1:55:38Speaker 3: gonna be thirty five.
- 1:55:40Speaker 2: I get it. They need to start preparing.
- 1:55:41Speaker 3: I want the next the next guy should be in
- 1:55:43Speaker 3: the building.
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: You know, they don't need to draft that in this
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: first round.
- 1:55:45Speaker 3: No, but it could be a top one hundred pick. Okay,
- 1:55:49Speaker 3: you disagree, Yeah, no, that's fine. Okay, but like the
- 1:55:52Speaker 3: third round, right, yeah, exactly.
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: Give me somebody that throw it to the coaching staff
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: and let's see if they can develop the gayep last
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: couple here and then we got to wrap it up.
- 1:56:02Speaker 2: This is from John.
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: He says that he saw you at the airport in
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: baggage claim he took a photo with him.
- 1:56:07Speaker 2: Oh, yes, that happen. Yes, that happened.
- 1:56:09Speaker 3: That was at the end. That was like at the
- 1:56:12Speaker 3: end of that flight, at the end of that week.
- 1:56:13Speaker 3: I apologize. I was probably on planet Zippy. Just it
- 1:56:17Speaker 3: was a long day, long two days between the Zoo
- 1:56:20Speaker 3: Bowl and all that travels, So I, Paul, I was
- 1:56:21Speaker 3: out of it, but I do remember that.
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: So John, along the same lines of what we're talking
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: about with wide receiver, Yeah, says, you know, if they
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: do make one of these big splashes at wide receiver,
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: that they're going to have to make a tough decision,
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: possibly on kaishon Boody.
- 1:56:37Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look, if they if they trade for
- 1:56:38Speaker 2: a J.
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: Brown, and that's gonna be Kaisehon Boody's role, and there
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: goes Kaishon Boody. I was a tiny now a couple
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: of them, I think were you know, he met Drake May,
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: had him on a slant and missed the throw. You know,
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: that was one of the big misses he had in
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: the game. You know, maybe there was one or two
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: plays there that Drake May didn't have the best throw
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: or the best decision. Looking at Kaishan Boody, but I don't.
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: I like Kaishan Boody, but I think that there's an
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: upgrade there that's possible, and I think that that needs
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: to be something that they're interested in. You know, pretty
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: much the one guy that he got in the playoffs
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: was Stingle. He seems to have Stingly's number. Yeah, the
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: rest of it I think was pretty tough sledding for
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: Kaishan Booty for most of the playoffs. And that's a
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: starting wide receiver who's playing more snaps pretty much than
- 1:57:23Speaker 1: any other wide receiver on the team besides maybe Matt
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: Collins when he was healthy. So they need to look
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: at getting a more dynamic X in Kaishan Booty, I think,
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: which is tough because I think Kayshan Boody has done
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: everything right.
- 1:57:38Speaker 3: But you could also, like we both thought he's probably
- 1:57:41Speaker 3: better at the Z anyway.
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I've heard that, and I wonder about that.
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: I mean, maybe that I think that is holding on
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: a little bit to like early lsu Kashan Boody.
- 1:57:51Speaker 2: Fair enough, but I could see where you're coming from
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: with that.
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: But I think the biggest thing is is you know,
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: you're gonna get in a lot of backside one on
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: one coverage when you're at that position.
- 1:58:01Speaker 2: That's the nature of the position.
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: And they have a quarterback that can put the ball,
- 1:58:06Speaker 1: you know, wherever he wants against that type of coverage,
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: and they need a guy that not only can win
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: the ball, but also can get open on those routes.
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: In Kisehan Boody did during the regular season, and he
- 1:58:18Speaker 1: didn't do it as much like everybody on the team,
- 1:58:21Speaker 1: not just him, you know, he didn't do it as
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: much in the playoffs. Let's end it on this one
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: because it feels like the uh this is a good
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: a good way to end it. This is from Blake
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: and Ohio. Now that I've had a few days to sulk,
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: I wanted to reach out and thank you guys for
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: a fantastic season. It was fun to be a Patriots
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: fan again this year, and a lot of that have
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: to do with you guys and your coworkers.
- 1:58:41Speaker 2: Well, thanks for that.
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 1:58:45Speaker 2: I really appreciate that.
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: I really appreciate everybody that you know watched and listened
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: to all the different shows this show, especially because this
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: is our show and I near and dear to my heart.
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: During the season.
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: Wasn't the way that we wanted it to end, obviously,
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: but like I said at the top of the show,
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: now I'll be a little bit fanboy.
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: It was a really fun ride.
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: This is the most fun that I've had covering this
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: team in a long long time, like probably twenty eighteen,
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: our very first year on the Beat when they won
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: the Super Bowl, because even nineteen, like Brady was sulking,
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: it wasn't all that fun, to be honest, even though
- 1:59:21Speaker 1: they were winning games. This was the most fun I've
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: had covering the team, maybe my entire time covering the Beat.
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: This was a great, great team. This was a great
- 1:59:32Speaker 1: group of guys, probably the best locker room that I've
- 1:59:35Speaker 1: ever been around. And it didn't They didn't finish the job,
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: and that's disappointing. And maybe they, you know, didn't finish
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: the job as a result of they weren't quite a
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: championship caliber team and that finally caught up to them
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: when they played one of the behemoths in the NFC.
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: And like, I'll concede all that stuff, but that doesn't
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: take away from you know, the friends we made along
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: the way.
- 1:59:56Speaker 3: As they like to say, no, it's just a this
- 1:59:58Speaker 3: was a special year. Yeah, this an awesome year. I
- 2:00:00Speaker 3: appreciate everybody who tuned in and all that. That was
- 2:00:05Speaker 3: kind of part of what it hit me at the end.
- 2:00:06Speaker 3: When it hit me is like, man, it's you know,
- 2:00:08Speaker 3: hopefully they're onto bigger and better things, but there was
- 2:00:10Speaker 3: something of this team was a little different. Yeah, and
- 2:00:12Speaker 3: sometimes I've covered a lot of teams at a lot
- 2:00:14Speaker 3: of different levels, and you know, this is probably the
- 2:00:17Speaker 3: first time on this job covering this team that like
- 2:00:20Speaker 3: you had that feeling this was.
- 2:00:24Speaker 2: The best locker room, the best team chemistry, the best vibes.
- 2:00:28Speaker 3: You're gonna roll your eyes at this, but this reminded
- 2:00:30Speaker 3: me of like covering college athletics and like where you
- 2:00:33Speaker 3: get that kind of camaraderie and stuff like that. This
- 2:00:35Speaker 3: team reminded me that, So hopefully, you know, they can
- 2:00:38Speaker 3: work to replicate that last year. Next year they should
- 2:00:40Speaker 3: have a lot of their leadership back. But sometimes these
- 2:00:43Speaker 3: things are just lightning in a bottle, and even if
- 2:00:44Speaker 3: it's good next year, maybe it's not quite what this was.
- 2:00:47Speaker 2: So I don't think it will be.
- 2:00:48Speaker 3: And the hope is and that doesn't mean it's going
- 2:00:51Speaker 3: to be bad or no, because the hope.
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: The hope is that the talent on the team is better, right,
- 2:00:55Speaker 1: And I don't think that you can recreate the energy
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: and the vibes around this team. That's gonna be really
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: hard to do. That doesn't mean that they're gonna be
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: worse though, that mean and that doesn't mean that the
- 2:01:06Speaker 1: vibes are gonna be bad or they're all gonna hate
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: each other.
- 2:01:08Speaker 3: That can be different.
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, Okay, So that does it for today. That
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: was a little bit therapeutic. I'm still kind of pissed,
- 2:01:14Speaker 1: but hopefully I'll get over this eventually. The uh Catch
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: twenty two will be back next Wednesday at noon. We're
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: now at noon to two. I'd like we were today
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: every Wednesday the off season moving forward. Like I mentioned
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: a few minutes ago, we're going to the Combine and
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: like two and a week and a half, so that's
- 2:01:33Speaker 1: gonna be right around the corner. PEU tomorrow twelve to
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: two Tuesdays and Thursdays now, So that's our off season schedule.
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: But I promise you we will have written we all
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: have video content, we'll have podcasts. We're not going anywhere
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: throughout the entire off season. And unlike some of the
- 2:01:51Speaker 1: off seasons that we've gotten used to the last couple
- 2:01:53Speaker 1: of years out, we're getting right into it.
- 2:01:55Speaker 3: This is gonna be a blitz.
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: This is gonna be like that.
- 2:01:59Speaker 3: It was cool covering the top of the draft. I'd
- 2:02:01Speaker 3: rather not do it. There was some cool things about it,
- 2:02:03Speaker 3: But the one thing that was tough was when we
- 2:02:04Speaker 3: started the draft essentially in October. Yeah, and we did
- 2:02:08Speaker 3: our best, and we're professionals, but even I can admit
- 2:02:12Speaker 3: it got a little repetitive. Sure at times, this is
- 2:02:15Speaker 3: not gonna get repetitive.
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: Because we're all cramming, we have fewer time to fill
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: it in and frankly, there's more players to talk about.
- 2:02:21Speaker 3: Right when you're picking third or fourth, you know it's
- 2:02:23Speaker 3: gonna be one of however, many guys. Yeah, we're gonna
- 2:02:25Speaker 3: be coming in every week and we're going to be
- 2:02:27Speaker 3: a different player every week. That this is the argument
- 2:02:29Speaker 3: for the first round for this guy, and you know,
- 2:02:31Speaker 3: free agency trades to no, there's gonna be This is
- 2:02:34Speaker 3: like you said, we're gonna be cramming it in. This
- 2:02:36Speaker 3: is we are not going to be short on content.
- 2:02:38Speaker 3: This is not gonna be repetitive.
- 2:02:40Speaker 2: So next week I want to do some more off
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: season needs stuff.
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: I want to talk about their internal free agents a
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: little bit more too, and who I would be interested
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: in signing and bringing back. And then of course we'll
- 2:02:52Speaker 1: start to talk about the combine and all that good
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: stuff as well.
- 2:02:55Speaker 2: So we'll see you guys.
- 2:02:55Speaker 6: Then.
- 2:02:56Speaker 1: Thanks for a great season, but we're not done here
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: on Catch twenty two. Alex and I will be back
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: next week.
- 2:03:00Speaker 3: Bye. Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
