- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, July 31 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:20Ignatius was born in Northern Spain in 1491. He was the eleventh child of the Lord of Loyola and at the age of 15 came as page to the court of King Ferdinand the fifth. His ardent and martial nature caused him to choose a military career.
- 0:41At the siege of Pamplona, he was severely wounded in the leg. During his long convalescence in the absence of books of chivalry for which he had a passion, they gave him the lives of Jesus Christ and of the saints to read. This reading was for him a revelation. It dawned on him that the church also has her army which under the orders of the representative of Christ fights to defend here below the sacred interests of the God of hosts. He then laid down his sword at the feet of the Virgin in the famous Benedictine Abbey at Montserrat.
- 1:24And his generous soul, once enamored of worldly glory, now only longed for the greater glory of the king whom henceforth he will serve. Throughout the night of March 25, when the mystery of the incarnation of the word is solemnized, confessing his sins, he watched as for knighthood, and the mother of God armed him for Christ and the militant church, his spouse. Soon he became general of the admirable Society of Jesus, raised by Providence to combat Protestantism, Jansenism, and returning paganism. On the mountain, the sons of Benedict, as a prelude to the liturgy in heaven, will continue the solemn celebration of the divine offices which Ignatius will recommend to the faithful and whose sacred melodies he never heard without tears. And he, sacrificing himself to his mission, goes down into the plain to oppose with his valiant troops the attacks of the hostile army whose violent onslaughts are always directed against his institute.
- 2:44Wherefore, to preserve in his sons the intense interior life required by the militant activity to which he devotes them, Saint Ignatius subjects them to a strongly organized hierarchy and teaches them in a masterly treatise highly approved of by the Church his spiritual exercises which have sanctified thousands of souls. It has been affirmed that it was the practice of the Exorcetatorium of the Benedictine Abbot Cisneros at Montserrat in 1500 which inspired him with the idea. Guided by grace he realized it however at Moriza in a different and very personal way. Saint Ignatius arms his sons by giving them for their shield, the name of Jesus, for their breastplate, the love of God which the savior came to inflame on earth and whose symbol the sacred heart they gloriously bear in the folds of their flag and for their sword preaching, writing, teaching, and all other forms of apostolate. It was in a Benedictine monastery in Spain that at the feast of the Annunciation, Saint Ignatius first used these arms in a chapel of the Benedictine Abbey of Montmartre that on the feast of the assumption in 1534 and later on at the altar of the Virgin of the Basilica Of Saint Paul outside the walls served by Benedictines that was born the Society of Jesus, that noble chivalry of Christ.
- 4:37And lastly, it was the Benedictine Pope Pius the seventh, a monk of the Ebatial Church of Our Lady of Cessena, who in 1814 reestablished it in all its rights. It is therefore God himself who unites at the feet of the blessed virgin these two orders which powerfully help the church. For Martha and Mary action and contemplation both contribute by different means to the glory of God. Alike are the mottos of these two religious families. In all things God be glorified, IOGD, and to the greater glory of God, AMDG.
- 5:32Not to do anything except for the glory of God and to do everything for his greater glory is the whole of holiness. It is the end of creation, the end of man's elevation to a supernatural life. The end indeed of the evangelical precepts which caused generous souls to renounce by vow things that are lawful in order to devote themselves more freely to the interests of God and to render to him in its entirety the accidental glory he had been deprived of by man's use of unlawful things. Benedict has filled Europe with his missionary monks whose principal work is to praise God, and Ignatius with his priest apostles who make manifest their interior life by their untiring activity. From Montserrat, 12 monks with their superior started with Christopher Columbus for the new continent.
- 6:44From Lisbon started Francis Xavier who first evangelized Japan and China. It is the same tree of the love of God which on different branches bears the same fruit. On 07/31/1556 Saint Ignatius died pronouncing the name of Jesus and his society spread throughout the world already numbering 12 provinces and a 100 colleges. May we obtain by the intercession of Saint Ignatius so to be sanctified in truth by the sacred mysteries of mass and communion, the source of all holiness, that with the help of this saint we may, after his example, so combat evil on earth as to be crowned with him in heaven. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost.
- 8:00Amen. The introit. At the name of Jesus every knee should bend of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the father. All they that love thy name shall glory in thee for thou wilt bless the just. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
- 8:42Amen. At the name of Jesus, every knee should bend of those in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the glory of God the father. The collect. Let us pray. O God, who to spread the greater glory of thy name did by means of blessed Ignatius strengthen the church militant with a new army.
- 9:21Grant that with his help and through his example, we may so fight on earth as to become worthy to be crowned with him in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to Timothy. Dearly beloved, be fixed thy mind on Jesus Christ sprung from the race of David who has risen from the dead.
- 10:08That is the gospel I preach and in its service I suffer hardship like a criminal. Yes. Even imprisonment. But there is no imprisoning the word of God. For its sake, I am ready to undergo anything for love of the elect that they, like us, may win salvation in Christ Jesus and eternal glory with it.
- 10:41But thou hast closely followed the schooling, the guidance thou hast from me in firm resolve, in faith, in patience, in love, in endurance. All my persecutions and suffering such as those which befell me at Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I underwent. And yet the Lord brought me through them all safely. And indeed all those who are resolved to live a holy life in Christ Jesus will meet with persecution.
- 11:27The gradual. The just man shall flourish like the palm tree. In the house of the Lord he shall grow to greatness like the cedars of Lebanon to proclaim thy mercy in the morning and thy truth in the night. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 11:49Blessed is he who endures under trials. When he has proved his worth, he will win the crown of life. Hallelujah. A continuation of the holy gospel according to Luke. At that time, Jesus appointed 72 others and sent them before him two and two into all the cities and villages he himself was to visit.
- 12:21The harvest, he told them, is plentiful enough, but the laborers are few. You must ask the lord to whom the harvest belongs to send laborers out for the harvesting. Go then and remember, I am sending you out to be like lambs among wolves. You are not to carry purse or wallet or shoes. You are to give no one greeting on your way.
- 12:54When you enter a house, say first of all, peace be to this house. And if those who dwell there are men of goodwill, your good wishes shall come down upon it. If not, they will come back to you the way they went. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they have to give you. The laborer has a right to his maintenance.
- 13:23Do not move from one house to another. When you enter a city and they make you welcome, be content to eat the fare they offer you and heal those who are sick there and tell them the kingdom of God is close upon you. The offertory. My truth and my mercy shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. The secret.
- 14:01O Lord, may the loving prayers of Saint Ignatius accompany our oblations so that these most holy mysteries which thou hast ordained to be the fount of all holiness may sanctify us likewise in the truth through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface, just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, o holy lord, father almighty, everlasting god, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 15:32Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. I am come to send fire upon the earth.
- 15:52And what do I will but that it be enkindled? The post communion. Let us pray. O Lord, may the sacrifice of praise which we have offered in thanksgiving for Saint Ignatius bring us through his intercession to praise thy majesty forever. Through our Lord, Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 16:33Amen. In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Saint Ignatius, pray for us for the greater glory of God.
