- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Some might see it as soul blessed.
- 1:38SPEAKER_02: America's Adult Playground, a place for debauchery, for throwing away your money.
- 1:44Dayna Roselli: Our interview with the host Brent Holmes coming up.

- 1:51Sean McAllister: Should I spin the wheel?
- 1:53Dayna Roselli: Please do.
- 2:02Sean McAllister: Welcome to Vegas Revealed, episode 105.
- 2:06Sean McAllister: We are headed into Super Bowl weekend.
- 2:08Sean McAllister: Uh Sean McAllister here with Dana Roselli.
- 2:11Sean McAllister: And Dana, you know, um, there's some weeks when we're out at restaurants, at show openings, like doing all the fun stuff.
- 2:20Sean McAllister: And then there's other weeks when you find yourself like just doing life.
- 2:25Dayna Roselli: Like adulting.
- 2:26Sean McAllister: Like adulting.
- 2:27Dayna Roselli: We bought a P.O.
- 2:28Dayna Roselli: box this week, everyone.
- 2:30Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I was like, I have never gone through this process.
- 2:34Dayna Roselli: And like, I feel like I don't really utilize the post office much anymore.
- 2:37Dayna Roselli: Do you know?
- 2:37Dayna Roselli: Right?
- 2:38Sean McAllister: Not at all.
- 2:38Dayna Roselli: So we were like, how do you buy a P.O.
- 2:40Dayna Roselli: box?
- 2:41Dayna Roselli: Anyway, we went through the process.
- 2:43Dayna Roselli: We paid our$211 for the year.
- 2:45Dayna Roselli: I went and picked up the keys.
- 2:47Dayna Roselli: And Sean, we got a post office box that is at the front of the post office.
- 2:53Dayna Roselli: And the woman that gave us the keys was like, Oh, you got one toward the front.
- 2:56Dayna Roselli: You're so crazy.
- 2:58Sean McAllister: Prime real estate.
- 2:59Dayna Roselli: So in true Vegas style, she said, Oh, yeah, it's just a random, like, you know, like coin toss.
- 3:05Sean McAllister: Like bingo balls coming out of the bin.
- 3:07Dayna Roselli: And so you never know where you're gonna get, and you really lucked out.
- 3:10Dayna Roselli: And I thought, wow, we're we're, you know, living it up.
- 3:13Sean McAllister: Look at us getting a prime P.O.
- 3:16Sean McAllister: box.
- 3:16Dayna Roselli: Yeah, so we got our keys, we've been adulting all week, doing things like that.
- 3:20Sean McAllister: But work-wise, last night we were out pretty much all night with Sammy Hagar.
- 3:25Dayna Roselli: We were.
- 3:26Dayna Roselli: His show at the Strat is back, and that was really fun.
- 3:28Dayna Roselli: But, you know, folks that had drinks in their hands didn't have to have a mask on, but everyone else did.
- 3:33Dayna Roselli: But we didn't know that was gonna be the last time ever.
- 3:37Sean McAllister: Like the last show, probably.
- 3:39Sean McAllister: I said ever.
- 3:40Sean McAllister: I should uh not ever.
- 3:42Sean McAllister: It was the last show before our governor of Nevada announced that there are no more mask mandates in our state.
- 3:52Dayna Roselli: I feel like we need to hear this clip again.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Roll it.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Now is the appropriate time for me to announce that Nevada will rescind our mask mandate.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Effective immediately.
- 4:05Sean McAllister: That's just music to your ears, isn't it?
- 4:07Dayna Roselli: It really is.
- 4:08Dayna Roselli: I mean, I have not met one person personally.
- 4:12Dayna Roselli: I have heard people on Twitter uh feel differently.
- 4:15Dayna Roselli: I don't know anyone that isn't over it.
- 4:17Sean McAllister: They had their season, they did, but the time has come and gone, and fortunately we're in the gone period of that mask phase.
- 4:27Dayna Roselli: So, yeah, we want to put that big bulletin out there.
- 4:29Dayna Roselli: So here's the deal: you don't have to wear a mask anymore indoors.
- 4:33Dayna Roselli: You can come and visit Las Vegas and enjoy mask-free.
- 4:37Dayna Roselli: Our kids and teachers uh here in the school district do not need to wear a mask anymore either.
- 4:43Dayna Roselli: This all effective immediately.
- 4:45Dayna Roselli: So come visit us, come visit us.
- 4:47Dayna Roselli: You still have to wear a mask on the plane, but that's okay.
- 4:50Sean McAllister: You do.
- 4:51Sean McAllister: And uh the Golden Knights, our NHL hockey team, they put out a statement that uh masks are no longer uh required for people who go and see those games because individual businesses and entities are allowed to still enforce their own mask policy, but there's no statewide mandate for it anymore.
- 5:13Sean McAllister: Uh Luke Bryan, he spoke out after uh the mask mandate was lifted, and he said, Hey, I love it.
- 5:22Sean McAllister: Yeah, now everybody can come and laugh, sing, and drink beer without something in front of their face.
- 5:27Dayna Roselli: So you and I are going to Luke Bryan and the VIP party, but we don't have to wear masks.
- 5:32Dayna Roselli: No, Friday.
- 5:33Sean McAllister: It's gonna be like the first big concert that we've been to where it's not required.
- 5:38Dayna Roselli: I don't have to hold it, I don't have to put it in my bag, and then just sit there and think, well, this is getting dirtier as I put it everywhere than you know, if I didn't have it on at all.
- 5:48Dayna Roselli: But yeah, it's it's gonna be great.
- 5:50Dayna Roselli: I don't know, it's gonna be weird.
- 5:51Dayna Roselli: I think last time when we had that little month where we didn't have to wear a mask, I know that all of us talked about like whenever you walk in somewhere without a mask, you feel almost like you're breaking a law now.
- 6:01Sean McAllister: Yes.
- 6:01Dayna Roselli: You know, it's like we gotta get used to it again.
- 6:03Sean McAllister: Well, I guess, you know, Vegas used to be uh uh an old West town full of outlaws, so it's gonna return to those times where everyone feels like an outlaw.
- 6:13Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 6:14Dayna Roselli: You know, I have seen a lot of notices going around people saying, Some people may choose to wear a mask still.
- 6:19Dayna Roselli: Please don't make fun of them, don't give them a hard time, let them be.
- 6:23Dayna Roselli: It's their choice.
- 6:24Dayna Roselli: It's true.
- 6:24Dayna Roselli: If you want to still wear a mask, wear your mask.
- 6:27Dayna Roselli: Like, we shouldn't judge like everyone's personal preference.
- 6:31Dayna Roselli: Now it's a choice.
- 6:31Dayna Roselli: It really is now a choice.
- 6:33Sean McAllister: It is a choice, and I'll tell you what, I think now that people have gotten used to having masks as part of everyday life, like if I feel like I'm getting a cold or you know, just a little under the weather in any way, like I'm I'm going to reach for the mask as a courtesy to other people I might encounter.
- 6:54Sean McAllister: Where, you know, before this, before March of 2020, you know, if I was I know that, you know, in the news business, if you're feeling sick, there's a lot of pressure to still have to go in and do your job.
- 7:07Sean McAllister: Right.
- 7:07Sean McAllister: I went to work sick more times than I can count.
- 7:11Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 7:11Sean McAllister: And I wasn't wearing a mask because it was before the mask stuff.
- 7:15Sean McAllister: But now I will be much more conscious of that and conscious of you know the the courtesy that it pays to others.
- 7:24Dayna Roselli: Uh yeah.
- 7:24Dayna Roselli: I think it's definitely, you know, do your thing, everyone.
- 7:28Dayna Roselli: But come enjoy.
- 7:29Dayna Roselli: We it's right before um Super Bowl Sunday, uh, which, you know, our sports books will be busy, and then Valentine's Day, we have lots of folks in town for that.
- 7:38Dayna Roselli: So I mean, it's it's great timing, and um let's just hope it doesn't come back.
- 7:44Sean McAllister: And go to our uh Instagram pages and like the the reel that we put out.
- 7:49Dayna Roselli: Yeah, we did it.
- 7:50Dayna Roselli: I I showed up to your house and I was like, we have to make a reel ASAP.
- 7:54Dayna Roselli: I already did my part before I got in the elevator in hopes of the mask coming off.
- 7:59Dayna Roselli: And then I was like, Sean, we need to do your part now.
- 8:02Dayna Roselli: Um, so it's funny.
- 8:03Dayna Roselli: And lots of reaction on Twitter and everyone's two cents, but I think for the most part, the overall vibe is people are relieved.
- 8:10Dayna Roselli: And speaking of masks, I went to see Carrot Top the other day.
- 8:13Sean McAllister: Oh, how was it?
- 8:14Dayna Roselli: So good.
- 8:14Dayna Roselli: You know, when he did a little uh stroll through the audience with like holding a piece of plexiglass in front of him, it was like one of the desk divider things.
- 8:22Dayna Roselli: I was cracking up, so I hadn't seen him, you know, since uh COVID started.
- 8:27Dayna Roselli: So I was like, I don't want to say excited for his COVID jokes, but I kind of was.
- 8:31Dayna Roselli: But I wanted to see what he had going.
- 8:32Dayna Roselli: And you know, he was funny as usual.
- 8:34Dayna Roselli: He's been 16 years at the Luxor, um, and he's just full of laughs from beginning to end.
- 8:40Dayna Roselli: You don't stop laughing.
- 8:41Dayna Roselli: His props are on point.
- 8:43Dayna Roselli: He's got a couple little political bits in there, you know, for everyone that hits on every person, and and he's got some COVID jokes in there, and he um, you know, just talks about obviously a lot of current events.
- 8:54Dayna Roselli: He's always finding a new prop that goes with whatever the hot topic is of the week, really, up to the minute.
- 9:01Sean McAllister: I mean his his brain, I would love to be in there and and see what his thought process is like.
- 9:08Sean McAllister: But I just saw somebody else, I'm I can't think of who right now, who just uh posted that they went to see Carrot Top and said, you know what?
- 9:18Sean McAllister: I forgot how freaking funny Carrot Top is.
- 9:21Dayna Roselli: He really is.
- 9:22Dayna Roselli: His demeanor, everything is so funny.
- 9:25Dayna Roselli: He's great.
- 9:25Dayna Roselli: And he tries out new props and he he always makes fun of like himself and his ideas too, which is part probably the bit, but it's still funny.
- 9:33Dayna Roselli: Well, they'll be like, okay, well, I guess you didn't like that one.
- 9:35Dayna Roselli: I really thought that was the best one.
- 9:36Dayna Roselli: All right, I worked really hard on that, you know, and then he'll throw it back in the box.
- 9:40Sean McAllister: But it is a different show every time you go because of the audience interaction, right?
- 9:44Dayna Roselli: Totally, totally.
- 9:45Dayna Roselli: This guy showed up in the audience and he was like, I have a question.
- 9:47Dayna Roselli: And Keratop was like, All right, I don't usually take questions, but you know, and then he played off this guy the whole time.
- 9:52Dayna Roselli: It was so much fun.
- 9:53Dayna Roselli: If you get a chance to see Caratop, I bring friends all the time and they go, Oh, really?
- 9:57Dayna Roselli: Caratop?
- 9:57Dayna Roselli: They go, the 1-800 collect guy?
- 9:59Dayna Roselli: Remember those commercials?
- 10:00Dayna Roselli: Oh my god, yeah.
- 10:01Dayna Roselli: And I'm like, Yeah, and they're like, Well, I always see Caratop on, you know, shows and stuff, but is this show?
- 10:06Dayna Roselli: I'm like, yes, you have to.
- 10:07Dayna Roselli: And they leave a huge Caratop fan.
- 10:09Sean McAllister: And there's a reason he's been here for 16 years.
- 10:12Dayna Roselli: True.
- 10:13Dayna Roselli: Very, very true.
- 10:14Dayna Roselli: So they enjoyed that.
- 10:15Dayna Roselli: Uh, you were in Nashville or Nash Vegas.
- 10:17Sean McAllister: Yes, Nash Vegas.
- 10:19Sean McAllister: That's what everybody kept saying.
- 10:20Sean McAllister: They're like, Yeah, welcome to Nash Vegas, Nash Vegas.
- 10:23Sean McAllister: And I was like, listen, there were a group of like 24 of us, and we were like, No, we're from Vegas, so we came to for Nashville.
- 10:32Sean McAllister: Right.
- 10:33Sean McAllister: We didn't come for Nash Vegas.
- 10:34Sean McAllister: Right.
- 10:35Sean McAllister: So, but yeah, everybody kept saying that.
- 10:38Sean McAllister: Um, it was a great time.
- 10:40Sean McAllister: We had uh it was it was there for a friend's birthday, um, did a lot of fun stuff, went to Justin Timberlake's place and got the good treatment over there.
- 10:53Dayna Roselli: You hung out at his house?
- 10:54Sean McAllister: No, well no, not his house.
- 10:55unknown: Okay.
- 10:56Dayna Roselli: I was like, wait, my ears just perked up.
- 10:58Sean McAllister: He's got like a restaurant, honky tonky kind of kind of place.
- 11:02Sean McAllister: JT, huh?
- 11:03Sean McAllister: Yeah, it was it's great.
- 11:05Dayna Roselli: Okay.
- 11:06Sean McAllister: So good.
- 11:07Sean McAllister: Um but getting there was a little bit of an issue.
- 11:12Sean McAllister: Uh we flew southwest and got stuck in Denver.
- 11:16Sean McAllister: It was one of those connections where you don't get off the plane.
- 11:19Sean McAllister: It's supposed to just be a quick switch and then you're on your way.
- 11:23Sean McAllister: Well, it was not a quick switch.
- 11:25Sean McAllister: We sat there for four hours at the gate.
- 11:27Sean McAllister: They had lots of I can't even begin to get into the issues, but they were issues that I've never experienced before.
- 11:35Dayna Roselli: And no alcohol?
- 11:36Sean McAllister: And no alcohol.
- 11:38Sean McAllister: However, however, here is the light at the end of the tunnel.
- 11:42Sean McAllister: While we were sitting there, and this was last, I guess, last Thursday, a week or so ago, uh, they did get on.
- 11:50Sean McAllister: One of the flight attendants got on and said, Listen, we've got nothing to give you right now, but if you fly with us again starting on February 16th, we will be serving alcohol again.
- 12:02unknown: Wow.
- 12:03Sean McAllister: Southwest Airlines, February 16th, 2022.
- 12:07Sean McAllister: That is the day the alcohol came back.
- 12:10Dayna Roselli: I'm still sitting here thinking about you were sitting there for four hours.
- 12:13Dayna Roselli: Oh my god.
- 12:13Dayna Roselli: I can't get off four hours is a flight to New York.
- 12:16Sean McAllister: It was awful.
- 12:17Dayna Roselli: What did you do?
- 12:18Dayna Roselli: Like, and I don't I've never even heard of that's crazy.
- 12:22Dayna Roselli: Why couldn't you get off the plane?
- 12:24Sean McAllister: Because there were issues with like head counts and the weight balance of the plane.
- 12:30Sean McAllister: It was it was a thing.
- 12:32Dayna Roselli: And wow, okay.
- 12:34Sean McAllister: So got it.
- 12:35Sean McAllister: It was a thing.
- 12:35Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I was supposed to go to Austin and we we canceled because of the ice storm that Austin got.
- 12:40Dayna Roselli: We thought, uh, let's go like another time when the weather's nicer.
- 12:43Dayna Roselli: We went to we're going to visit our friend, and I really want to experience Austin, Texas, you know, the way I'm supposed to experience it.
- 12:50Dayna Roselli: But I loved just canceling the flight and it going into my little pot of money in Southwest.
- 12:54Sean McAllister: Uh I will say though that uh Southwest recognized that it was a bad, messy situation.
- 13:02Sean McAllister: And the captain even said it was an embarrassment for all of them.
- 13:06Sean McAllister: Um they preemptively uh gave us uh flight credits that essentially made it uh almost a free flight.
- 13:15Sean McAllister: Good.
- 13:15Sean McAllister: So they Southwest did their part to make things right.
- 13:19Dayna Roselli: All right, good.
- 13:19Dayna Roselli: I like that.
- 13:20Dayna Roselli: Well, it was freezing in Nashville.
- 13:22Dayna Roselli: I couldn't go to Austin because of the ice storm, but it's 70 degrees this week in Las Vegas.
- 13:27Dayna Roselli: Hello, I love it.
- 13:28Sean McAllister: Roselli's over here already getting her tan on.
- 13:31Dayna Roselli: I laid out yesterday.
- 13:32Dayna Roselli: Do you see my little glow?
- 13:35Dayna Roselli: But yeah, I get it's time, man.
- 13:37Dayna Roselli: It's time.
- 13:38Dayna Roselli: It's warm out.
- 13:39Dayna Roselli: It's perfect.
- 13:40Sean McAllister: Remember perfect.
- 13:41Sean McAllister: Remember, I think it was like November on here on the podcast when we said it's like the end of pool season, things are shutting down.
- 13:50Sean McAllister: Now we're in February, and pool season's about to kick back up.
- 13:53Dayna Roselli: It's crazy, right?
- 13:54Dayna Roselli: There's like pool auditions at all the hotels, and I mean, you name it.
- 13:58Dayna Roselli: They're getting we're gearing up for pool season.
- 14:00Sean McAllister: It's gonna be a great Super Bowl weekend, isn't it?
- 14:02Dayna Roselli: It is.
- 14:03Dayna Roselli: It's gonna be uh people be able to cook out, which always adds to your home Super Bowl party.
- 14:08Dayna Roselli: And then what we talked about last week with uh Derek Stevens over at Circa and you know the new Stadium Swim having a huge Super Bowl party.
- 14:15Dayna Roselli: I mean, Stadium Swim is gonna be packed with people in that pool.
- 14:19Sean McAllister: Because you're gonna want to be outside.
- 14:21Sean McAllister: A lot of casino properties have indoor uh Super Bowl viewing parties in the ballrooms and you know in their big event spaces.
- 14:30Sean McAllister: But being outside this year is going to be the best place to be.
- 14:35Dayna Roselli: Yeah, it definitely is.
- 14:37Dayna Roselli: So uh yeah, I'm going over my friend Rocco and Moddox on uh Super Bowl Sunday.
- 14:41Dayna Roselli: A little shout out to them.
- 14:42Dayna Roselli: They always host us when there's we want to watch a lot of things, you know, all together.
- 14:45Dayna Roselli: But I'm gonna tell them you gotta open up those patio doors and and turn on the pool because I am ready for maybe to dip my feet in on Super Bowl Sunday.
- 14:55Sean McAllister: But real quick, Dana, something I want to mention on Friday, uh, we are going to see Luke Bryan's debut over at Resorts World.
- 15:04Sean McAllister: So that's looking to be a great show.
- 15:07Sean McAllister: He just did uh an interview on GMA and said that he's so excited to be here.
- 15:12Sean McAllister: He's been here for a week rehearsing, getting the show ready, and said it's just gonna be one big country party.
- 15:18Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 15:19Dayna Roselli: I can't wait uh for us to see that.
- 15:20Dayna Roselli: And I'm excited.
- 15:21Dayna Roselli: I haven't been to the theater yet.
- 15:22Dayna Roselli: I know you have to see Katy Perry.
- 15:24Dayna Roselli: Oh, right, yeah.
- 15:24Dayna Roselli: And I'm going to Katy Perry in March.
- 15:26Dayna Roselli: But yeah, I'm I'm excited to see the theater and the whole experience.
- 15:29Dayna Roselli: It's a Friday night, so you know, it'll be fun.
- 15:31Dayna Roselli: And, you know, when this podcast drops, we have our we will have already seen it to the night before, but we can't talk about it because we're shooting ahead until next week.
- 15:39Dayna Roselli: So we'll have all the details for you.
- 15:41Sean McAllister: Well, from live entertainment up on stage to the entertainment right in the palm of your hand on your favorite podcasting app, there is a podcast called Spectacle that is focusing its new season all on Las Vegas, our favorite topic.
- 15:56Sean McAllister: New episodes have just launched, and we're talking with host Brent Holmes today.
- 16:02Dayna Roselli: First, we want to play a little clip of the trailer.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: It goes by a lot of names.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: A glittering palace in the desert.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: Some might see it as soul place.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: America's Adult Playground, a place for debauchery, for throwing away your money.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: We're going to Vegas for you to win.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: For getting a quickie wedding by Elvis.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: With this playing, I promise all my love, baby.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: I'll promise all my life, and I promise to never leave you at the Heartbreak Hotel.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: But there's a lot more to Vegas than meets the eye.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: For nearly a century, it's been America's sideshow.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: And no judgment zone.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: People who didn't smoke cigars, smoke cigars.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: People who didn't gamble, gamble.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: People who didn't see shitty impressionists went to see shitty impressionists.
- 16:59Dayna Roselli: The podcast sounds so good.
- 17:00Dayna Roselli: Brent lives in Las Vegas and he has for quite some time.
- 17:04Dayna Roselli: He joins us now.
- 17:05Dayna Roselli: Hey Brent, how you doing?
- 17:06Dayna Roselli: Wonderful.
- 17:07Dayna Roselli: How are you?
- 17:08Dayna Roselli: Great.
- 17:09Dayna Roselli: Thanks for joining us.
- 17:10Dayna Roselli: Uh, we love that we're all in Las Vegas, so we've got a lot of Las Vegas to discuss.
- 17:15Sean McAllister: And we are also uh all lovers of the city of Las Vegas.
- 17:20Sean McAllister: Where did that love and passion start for you?
- 17:24Sean McAllister: Wow.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Um, that's a great question.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: I think um I came here in uh 2001, and I really think it began with understanding the environment surrounding the city, understanding the desert, a lot of hikes are beautiful places like Red Rock, um, Valley of Fire, so on and so forth.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: And then um, once you start to really engage the culture of the city, the people in the city, what the city can provide, and how it's you know, got a really great small town feeling if you're a local, but has all the you know wonderful aspects of a larger city, a larger metropolitan area, or at least most of them.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think that those are things that I've really come to love and enjoy.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: And of course, the people, I think Las Vegas have a specific attitude and a specific outlook on life that's really pleasant and compelling.
- 18:17Dayna Roselli: Yeah, I mean, we always say we friends that leave, they always end up coming back when they move away, right?
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, and you can't, and you also you can't, like, let's be honest here, you you know, you go to a great town like LA or Houston or even New York, and you know, everything closes at 10 o'clock, and you can't beat that.
- 18:34Dayna Roselli: You know, so it's interesting.
- 18:36Dayna Roselli: So you decided uh for your podcast, which is a documentary style, it's called Spectacle, and you're focusing all on Las Vegas this season.
- 18:43Dayna Roselli: So why did you choose Las Vegas?
- 18:45Dayna Roselli: Obviously, you just mentioned kind of some of the reasons, but you wanted to really dig deeper.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, Las Vegas is an incredibly symbolic city for how I America filters its desires, right?
- 18:59SPEAKER_02: Um we personify uh or city sonify, is that a word?
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 19:05Sean McAllister: It is now, I like it.
- 19:07SPEAKER_02: Um you know, these these notions of of American consumption, but also what we see as pleasurable, what we see as taboo, how we view entertainment.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: Um the culture at large is really, you know, very reflective of the city of Las Vegas.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: So in spectacle, we're looking at how Las Vegas holds up a mirror to a lot of cultural aspects of the United States, uh, whether it be race or romantic, uh, you know, love and marriage or sex work or entertainment.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: You know, it's just that's how it that that and and we really reflect those things, I think, incredibly well, more than other other cities in America.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: That's there's some kind of distillation here.
- 19:52Sean McAllister: Yeah, and I feel like uh your podcast is a fantastic companion to what Dana and I talk about here on Vegas Revealed.
- 20:00Sean McAllister: We give, you know, kind of the headlines and update what's going on now, but you're kind of digging deeper and getting to the roots of how we got to these headlines over the years.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: We're we're we're analyzing um, you know, mostly through pop cultural tropes so that that larger and broader audiences have uh an identifier.
- 20:22SPEAKER_02: Um you know, we're using cinema, we're using we're using television, um, we're using books to show people the different eras and aspects of Las Vegas that can tell us how the city evolved and changed over time.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: And I think you guys do a great job of doing how the city is evolving and changing in real time, you know.
- 20:45Dayna Roselli: Right.
- 20:45Dayna Roselli: So, I mean, we were looking at uh the different topics that you're gonna dive into.
- 20:49Dayna Roselli: Um, do you do you have a favorite episode?
- 20:51Dayna Roselli: Um, I was looking at you're gonna be talking about, you know, what Vegas tells us about marriage, uh, what casino the iconic movie tells us about the mob.
- 20:59Dayna Roselli: I mean, you've got all sorts of different topics.
- 21:01Dayna Roselli: Why don't you run through some of your favorites and let people know what you're gonna have on your show?
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Well, I I love the marriage episode.
- 21:07SPEAKER_02: We've got, you know, the obligatory Elvis impersonating uh uh priest.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: Uh we have we have a conversation about how Las Vegas really established the idea of the quickie wedding and how that really reflects on how the United States uh uh it deals with marriage at this point, which I think is is a is a much more um flexible thing than it was.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: And I think Las Vegas was early onto that trend, like, hey, let's get married, okay, great, let's do it.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: And then, you know, we also the state of Nevada is also one of the founding states for rapid divorces and easy divorces, and and that became a real tourism generator.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: Uh I absolutely uh adore uh the first episode where we just we talked to Pendulette about what makes Las Vegas different, and that's a lot of fun, and he has so many great insights.
- 21:55SPEAKER_02: And um, the the fourth episode coming up, we're gonna be talking about the historical.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: West Side and the Mulan Rouge, and um some of Las Vegas' black history, and how the city of Las Vegas dealt with segregation and how that reflected on entertainment.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: And I think those are all really incredible topics to focus on for an episode.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 22:15Sean McAllister: And and I know you touching on the Mulan Rouge, I know over the years there have been uh developers who've had plans to bring the Moulin Rouge back.
- 22:24Sean McAllister: Are you are you touching on any of that?
- 22:28Sean McAllister: Or are you focusing on the the history of the Moulin Rouge and how it's gotten us to where we are now?
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: We're gonna be talking about the history of the Moulin Rouge, um, how um how segregation uh functioned in Las Vegas and and how Las Vegas has dealt with the fact that, you know, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr., great black entertainers were welcome to play here, but they weren't welcome to stay here.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: And that's a big conversational topic about how America deals with African Americans being so prominent within entertainment, but black people in general not necessarily being treated very well by state authorities or uh uh uh by larger cultural and social forces.
- 23:11SPEAKER_02: We do speak about some of the development aspects around the Muan Rouge and people always wanting to bring it back, but we also, you know, and we do take a critical eye here and and look at this as a a cultural failure.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: I don't, you know, I don't I don't see how you can can view the Muan Rouge lot lying empty and degenerating for that many years with so much promise to it, uh, as anything else but uh shortcoming on behalf of both the city and the people of Las Vegas.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: True.
- 23:38Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 23:39Dayna Roselli: What do you think about the label of Sin City?
- 23:41Dayna Roselli: It's interesting.
- 23:42Dayna Roselli: When I moved here in 2004, um I worked for a TV station and we were told, do not call it Sin City.
- 23:49Dayna Roselli: That is not, it cannot be written in your script.
- 23:51Dayna Roselli: We do not call it that.
- 23:53Dayna Roselli: Uh, but it's interesting because that has also been something that has brought so many visitors to Las Vegas and such a huge part of our tourism.
- 24:02Dayna Roselli: What do you think about the label?
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Well, I mean, I think the label Sin City is wonderful and hilarious, right?
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: We're not any more um truly debaucheristic or sinful than any other town in this country.
- 24:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, from my perspective from living here for 20 years, um, we are a little more liberal when it comes to what people, uh, how people meet their desires.
- 24:23SPEAKER_02: But really, these are all marketing aspects of a city that is valuable based almost purely on its ability to seduce people from outside of it, right?
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: We we're we're it's almost exclusively an extra tourist city.
- 24:37SPEAKER_02: That's our our our primary industry, that's our main industry.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: We we don't we don't produce that much else.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: We are a service economy based city.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: So we attach sin to it, or um, you know, what happens in here in Vegas stays in Vegas, all of those, all those strange catchphrases.
- 24:54SPEAKER_02: I but I think the term should should come back on some level or another and be used more prominently.
- 24:59SPEAKER_02: It's a lot of fun.
- 25:00SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's silly though, right?
- 25:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think it's silly.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:04Dayna Roselli: Um But we were just chatting the other day saying what happens in Vegas, you know, stays in Vegas is really it's the line that's just has worked.
- 25:12Dayna Roselli: It just works.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it and it's it's interesting because we we're appealing to people that are trying to escape their day-to-day lives and the their perceived constraints of you know, social constraints within their towns or their cities or whatever places.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: And and we appeal to that by saying, hey, we're Las Vegas, we'll keep your secrets, right?
- 25:33SPEAKER_02: Um, you can you can do whatever you want and enjoy it however you like, and we'll keep your secrets.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: That's where the Sin City wine comes from, that's where what happens here stays here comes from.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: So America has some kind of great fundamental trust in Las Vegas to accommodate its uh, you know, furtive desires.
- 25:50Sean McAllister: And as you look at how Las Vegas has evolved as a city and as a destination, um when you look at the changes that have happened here over the years, are there certain changes that you see as good and certain things that maybe you would throw over into the con category?
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Of course.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, every city comes with its pros and cons.
- 26:16SPEAKER_02: We're in the big middle of a big upheaval right now, right?
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Um we're having another major migration into the city.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: It's affecting us economically.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: I know as somebody that's lived here for 20 years, um the that the change financially and what things cost, not just because of inflation, but because of new people coming from coming and working remotely here, it's certainly having a major effect on how I'm living my life.
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: I think, you know, this city has always tried to bend with what people want.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: And that's what's fascinating about it.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: At the end of the day, yeah, there's there's some terrible things.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: We we we don't have a really effective school system because the city doesn't uh need to invest in a school system.
- 27:00SPEAKER_02: It needs a service economy workforce, and you don't necessarily need to be going to Harvard for that, right?
- 27:05SPEAKER_02: We we certainly are not great in the arts, but in the same right, we are the most ethnically diverse city in America.
- 27:12SPEAKER_02: We're the least redlined city in America.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: We're we we do have the most, you know, fully employed and able-bodied um high school graduates in the country, which you know, as much as you people talk about brain drain or or professionalism or whatever, I mean that there's that's an important place to provide for people that maybe never had the opportunity to get a better education.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: Those those things are crucial.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: We have we have to look at those things on both sides.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: And yeah, I mean, the thing that scares me the most right now, water, right?
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: I think everybody should be a little bit more concerned about water.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Um and uh and but but again, we are the technological leader in the United States for water conservation.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: We're we're we're hand in fist above every other city in the country, and and we understand how to reclaim it and operate it better.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: And that's something that we're gonna have to look at as a nation in the future.
- 28:01Dayna Roselli: Well, and what do you think?
- 28:01Dayna Roselli: I mean, now with after, you know, I I'd like to say we're post-pandemic, but you know, we're still moving along with that.
- 28:08Dayna Roselli: But do you think that has changed?
- 28:10Dayna Roselli: It's gonna change um how visitors play in Vegas, how tourists come to Las Vegas, or is it a what do you think is gonna be different about Las Vegas since over the last two years?
- 28:21Dayna Roselli: Do you see anything changing?
- 28:22Dayna Roselli: Did you talk to anyone in the series about, you know, what's gonna be different now?
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: We we haven't gotten that's those are our our last two episodes we're gonna be looking um more future-facing, and we're certainly gonna have to have a couple of conversations, but we we haven't completed those episodes yet.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: So um we haven't spoken to anyone directly right now.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: I haven't I I don't know.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I would like to say we're post-pandemic too.
- 28:47SPEAKER_02: I think everybody'd like to say we're post-pandemic, right?
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, but you know, next weekend we can get variant Zeta VOM, right?
- 28:55Sean McAllister: Yeah, let's just put this in the rear view, please.
- 28:57Sean McAllister: Zeta Vaughn.
- 28:58Sean McAllister: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't think in that aspect, Las Vegas wants to change fundamentally.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: We want people out drinking, gambling, partying, and and having a good time and eating in restaurants.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: That's what we do, that's what we do better than any other city in the country.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: What I think is interesting is the longer conversation about gaming, and that that's a general that actually seems to be a generational habit, uh a generational uh joy, and that gaming is in decline.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: And what does Las Vegas do?
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Because this is what Las Vegas has always done.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: We've always shifted, we've always gotten, you know, a facelift just so America will kiss us again, right?
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: And so how what's what's the next what's the next major operation?
- 29:38SPEAKER_02: Um, how are we going to adjust to that?
- 29:41SPEAKER_02: As far as the pandemic goes, I mean, I think it hurt a lot of people.
- 29:44SPEAKER_02: I think it made the strip really interesting for a little while.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: I I've never seen it empty before.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Um but I hope we get back to whatever business as usual is with maybe a greater mind as a city towards diversifying our economy because uh another event like that could be catastrophic.
- 30:03Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 30:04Dayna Roselli: I think that was one of the really hot topics that came out when we were in the midst of the shutdown.
- 30:08Dayna Roselli: Everyone was like, we've got to have more industries here.
- 30:11Sean McAllister: But yeah, hospitality and entertainment, you you think that they're not going away until they do.
- 30:17Sean McAllister: And then there's a major red flag that's waving, and we need to figure out what to do.
- 30:23Sean McAllister: Uh we're really looking forward to sitting down and listening to each episode of Spectacle with your focus on Las Vegas.
- 30:31Sean McAllister: Available on all podcasting platforms, right?
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Uh uh Apple Podcasts, uh Spotify, uh Stitcher, or you can just go straight to Neon Hum Media and click on um click on Spectacle.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: I'm super excited to get to talk about a city that I think uh we can all agree that we love and enjoy.
- 30:50Sean McAllister: Brent Holmes, thank you so much.
- 30:52Sean McAllister: Thank you.
- 30:53Sean McAllister: It really does sound like such a fascinating podcast.
- 30:56Sean McAllister: Again, episode one features a great conversation in depth with Penn Gillette, longtime Las Vegas entertainer.
- 31:03Sean McAllister: Again, you can hear Spectacle Las Vegas on your favorite podcasting platform.
- 31:09Dayna Roselli: All right, let's do some tips.
- 31:15Sean McAllister: All right, and Dana, we love to really put it out there when there are great ways to get around Las Vegas and navigate the things that are so fun to see and do.
- 31:27Sean McAllister: In downtown Las Vegas, talking about like the Fremont Street area, uh, there's a new stop on the downtown loop.
- 31:36Sean McAllister: And the downtown loop is a free shuttle service that uh goes to a bunch of different spots, all in the downtown area.
- 31:42Sean McAllister: But the new stop is for brewery row.
- 31:46Dayna Roselli: And we know we've talked to the mayor before about brewery row.
- 31:48Sean McAllister: She's she she lights up like a Christmas tree.
- 31:51Dayna Roselli: She loves that brewery row, yeah.
- 31:53Dayna Roselli: And when we say brewery row, it's a bunch of breweries in a row on the main on my main street, basically.
- 31:59Dayna Roselli: And so now, yeah, this shuttle has added a stop to brewery row, which I think is such a great idea.
- 32:05Sean McAllister: It really is.
- 32:06Sean McAllister: Some great new spots that have opened up in downtown.
- 32:09Sean McAllister: Uh the brewery row stop is in addition to Circa Las Vegas, the Strat, Symphony Park, City Hall, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement.
- 32:21Sean McAllister: Um, and if you want any more details about the stops or when and where you can catch the downtown loop, it's super easy just to download the Go Vegas app from the app store or on your Android at Google Play.
- 32:37Dayna Roselli: Perfect.
- 32:38Dayna Roselli: And today I'm actually going on a shoot for the Vegas on show that we are a part of now that you can see at visitlosvegas.com and doing a piece on Brewery Row.
- 32:47Dayna Roselli: So that'll be in like episode three at some point.
- 32:50Dayna Roselli: And yours is coming up too with the behind the scenes of the Bellagio Fountains.
- 32:54Dayna Roselli: Can't wait to see that.
- 32:55Dayna Roselli: Again, it's visitlosvegas.com.
- 32:58Sean McAllister: And I know, Dana, a lot of people have played beer Olympics, but the real Olympics, the Winter Olympics, are going on right now.
- 33:04Sean McAllister: And there's an interesting Vegas tie.
- 33:06Dayna Roselli: Well, there is, and it's funny because a lot of people, when they watch the Winter Olympics, always say, How is curling a sport?
- 33:11Dayna Roselli: And what is it, right?
- 33:13Sean McAllister: I love watching it.
- 33:13Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 33:14Dayna Roselli: Well, did you know we have a curl club in Las Vegas?
- 33:18Dayna Roselli: Yes.
- 33:18Dayna Roselli: Uh, went out to eat with my friend Carla Welga, who is part of Curl Vegas.
- 33:24Dayna Roselli: And they have a club with a lot of members, actually, and they they go and they do curling.
- 33:31Dayna Roselli: And basically, she was saying, you know, they do it inside an ice rink, and they're looking for like a home because she was saying the difference between, you know, an ice skating arena and and curling is you need really smooth, even ice for curling.
- 33:46Dayna Roselli: So apparently it's hard to get that by just being inside a rink that's used for skating, even though they come out with a Zamboni and they smooth it over.
- 33:54Dayna Roselli: It's still there's little bumps and stuff.
- 33:55Dayna Roselli: So even though they're able to do it there, um, they're trying to like do more with this club.
- 34:00Dayna Roselli: They want to, you know, teach youth.
- 34:02Dayna Roselli: They want people to come out.
- 34:03Dayna Roselli: They said it's a fun couples event, it's uh fun for families.
- 34:07Dayna Roselli: And so they wanted just everyone to know that they exist.
- 34:10Dayna Roselli: It's curlvegas.com.
- 34:13Dayna Roselli: Okay, curlvegas.com.
- 34:15Dayna Roselli: There's all sorts of information there.
- 34:17Dayna Roselli: You can go, you can also donate to help them try and get a home, a permanent home for Curl Vegas.
- 34:23Sean McAllister: Very cool.
- 34:24Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 34:24Sean McAllister: I'd like to try out to be a sweeper.
- 34:26Dayna Roselli: She said we can come do it whenever we want.
- 34:28Dayna Roselli: Oh, good.
- 34:29Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 34:29Sean McAllister: I have a feeling it's a lot harder than it looks.
- 34:31Dayna Roselli: Oh, you definitely.
- 34:32Dayna Roselli: I'm not sure if I see myself curling in the near future.
- 34:36Dayna Roselli: I curl my hair.
- 34:36Dayna Roselli: I gotta go curl my hair because I have an appointment.
- 34:38Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 34:39Sean McAllister: You're off to brewery row.
- 34:40Sean McAllister: Hey, we want to do a big thanks again to Brent Holmes, the host of Spectacle Las Vegas, the podcast that you can find on any podcasting platform.
- 34:49Sean McAllister: And of course, you can hear Vegas Revealed on any podcasting platform as well.
