Summer is really here. And that's a perfect lead-in to today's topic: weather phrases in Cantonese. Luna: Yes! Because when I'm sweating on the MTR, I want to be able to complain in Cantonese. Lucas: Exactly. So let's start with the most basic one: 'it's hot.' In Cantonese, you say 好熱. Luna: 好熱. Lucas: Good. Say it once more. Luna: 好熱. Lucas: Perfect. 好 means 'very' and 熱 means 'hot.' So 好熱 is literally 'very hot.' Now, what about when winter comes? 'It's cold.' That's 好凍. Luna: 好凍. Lucas: Yes. 凍 means 'cold.' Say it again. Luna: 好凍. That's easy. Lucas: Now, let's add a little emotion. In Cantonese, you can add 啊 at the end to make it sound more expressive. So 好熱啊 means 'It's so hot!' And 好凍啊 means 'It's so cold!' Luna: So I can say 好熱啊 when I'm melting? Lucas: Absolutely. Try it. Luna: 好熱啊. Oh, that feels good to say. Lucas: Now, what about rain? 'It's raining' in Cantonese is 落雨. Luna: 落雨. 落 means 'fall' and 雨 means 'rain'? Lucas: Exactly! So 落雨 is 'rain falling.' Say it. Luna: 落雨. Lucas: Good. Now let's put it together in a sentence. 'Today is very hot.' That's 今日好熱.
