Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: "Uneven Performance" From Eagles QB Tanner McKee
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell. On
- 0:13Speaker 1: Inside the Birds, it's Jeff Mosher with Adam Kaplan and
- 0:16Speaker 1: of course we have Greg Cosell here, and this is
- 0:19Speaker 1: gonna be a little bit of a different two part series.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The Eagles obviously lost to the Commanders in Week eighteen.
- 0:25Speaker 1: They didn't start all of their starters, so we're not
- 0:28Speaker 1: gonna go through tape of the entire offense and defense.
- 0:31Speaker 1: But Greg did spend a lot of time watching Tanner
- 0:34Speaker 1: McKee and we know he's a hot topic among Eagles fans,
- 0:38Speaker 1: so we're gonna in part one discuss Tanner McKee and
- 0:42Speaker 1: go through some footage of it. And then in the
- 0:44Speaker 1: part two on Wednesday, we'll get in a little bit
- 0:46Speaker 1: to the Niners preview, as the Eagles will be playing
- 0:49Speaker 1: Greg the San Francisco forty nine Ers in the playoffs
- 0:52Speaker 1: again six matchup on Sunday, which you know, we'll have
- 0:56Speaker 1: that cover in the pregame show. Again, we'll do a
- 0:58Speaker 1: little bit on that. But I feel like that's a
- 1:00Speaker 1: pretty exciting matchup though, just just because of the history
- 1:03Speaker 1: of the two teams recently.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I mean until this last game the Niners
- 1:07Speaker 2: were scoring a ton of points. And we'll get into
- 1:10Speaker 2: those details much more so later in the week. But
- 1:12Speaker 2: but yeah, it's you know, if the Niners had by
- 1:16Speaker 2: chance won the game, we'd be talking about this as if, Wow,
- 1:19Speaker 2: this is a really hard matchup for the Eagles. But
- 1:21Speaker 2: obviously with what happened, you know, I think that the
- 1:24Speaker 2: narratives probably changed a little.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Bit, probably a little bit a little bit. We will
- 1:28Speaker 1: talk about McCaffrey though, and the challenges that he presents.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Let's shift gears. Let's talk about Tanner McKee. You watch
- 1:35Speaker 1: the entire tape Eagles fans, I could just tell by
- 1:39Speaker 1: it's so funny how it's day and night sometimes. You know,
- 1:41Speaker 1: they were very excited about Tanner McKee and now the
- 1:44Speaker 1: guy's a bomb and he's never nothing more than a
- 1:46Speaker 1: third string quarterback. If if you're on social media or
- 1:49Speaker 1: if you hear the calls on sports talk radio, what
- 1:52Speaker 1: did you Let's just talk about what they did offensively schematically?
- 1:56Speaker 1: Did they change a whole lot and when you watched
- 1:59Speaker 1: it as far as what they normally do offensively for
- 2:01Speaker 1: it to suit him.
- 2:02Speaker 2: You know, that's that's hard to tell because the one
- 2:06Speaker 2: thing about McKee and you saw it early in the game.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Is the ball comes out, you know. So that's why
- 2:12Speaker 2: it's hard to tell, because what one thing people have
- 2:16Speaker 2: to understand is you're talking about two totally different style quarterbacks.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So the offense is going to look different. That doesn't
- 2:24Speaker 2: mean all the route concepts are different, which I doubt
- 2:27Speaker 2: is the case. Now there might be some that are different.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Just with that, McKee is comfortable with that, Maybe Jalen isn't.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Things Jalen's comfortable with that mcke wouldn't be comfortable with.
- 2:37Speaker 2: That's normal with a quarterback. That's not a surprise because
- 2:41Speaker 2: they're two totally different kinds of players, you know, McKee.
- 2:45Speaker 2: When I was watching McKee, and by the way, it
- 2:47Speaker 2: was an uneven performance, there were some very good things
- 2:50Speaker 2: and there were some things that if he were to
- 2:52Speaker 2: play more. Don't forget he hasn't played in a game,
- 2:55Speaker 2: you know. And that's the other thing is people probably
- 2:57Speaker 2: lose sight of the guy hasn't played in a game.
- 3:00Speaker 2: So there were things that if he were to become
- 3:03Speaker 2: a starter, not necessarily with the Eagles, but somewhere, you know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: if that would have happened, the things he'd have to
- 3:08Speaker 2: do because he's a pocket quarterback. So I was thinking
- 3:11Speaker 2: to myself watching Tanner McKee, that what he is if
- 3:15Speaker 2: he were to ever to reach his highest potential, he's
- 3:18Speaker 2: Jared Goff. That's who Tanner McKey is. Stylistically, That's the
- 3:22Speaker 2: kind of quarterback he is, right, you know, he's a
- 3:25Speaker 2: rhythm player. You know, he's not going to beat you
- 3:28Speaker 2: with his legs and the ball comes out and he
- 3:31Speaker 2: knows where to go with it. That's who he is,
- 3:34Speaker 2: you know. But in this game, you know, he missed
- 3:36Speaker 2: some things. There were a couple of throws he should
- 3:38Speaker 2: have made that he didn't make, only he could tell
- 3:41Speaker 2: you why. I can't tell you the why part, you know.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And then there were a couple that he missed with
- 3:47Speaker 2: poor ball location. Just a few, but you know, a
- 3:50Speaker 2: couple that were, you know, at the moment, were of
- 3:53Speaker 2: high magnitude, so you know. But but he also made
- 3:57Speaker 2: some really really good throws with pure time in rhythm,
- 4:00Speaker 2: which is what he is.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I thought, Greg and Jeff and I were texting and
- 4:05Speaker 3: then talking about it, and Jeff was at the game
- 4:07Speaker 3: so you could see for the press box where you
- 4:09Speaker 3: get a good overview. I thought, there's some times he
- 4:10Speaker 3: just didn't drive the football like he normally does. It's
- 4:13Speaker 3: trying to be too fine or too careful.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Yeah, there were a couple of outside throws where it
- 4:17Speaker 2: didn't come out the way I thought it should have rrectly.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I thought he even had some completions, Greg that he
- 4:22Speaker 1: almost let the defender get too close by leaving a
- 4:24Speaker 1: little up.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Yeah, because he's got I wouldn't say he's got a
- 4:28Speaker 2: power arm, but he's got a plus arm, so so yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 2: I would agree with you on that.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And so let's let's talk about what they did. They
- 4:37Speaker 1: were mostly eleven personnel for this game, correct.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Yes, in this game they they no, No, they actually
- 4:44Speaker 2: played no twenty two snaps and twelve personnel and four
- 4:47Speaker 2: snaps and thirteen personnel.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So that would be fifteen and then how many and
- 4:52Speaker 1: thirty four snaps?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Eleventy four snaps in eleven.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Yeah, so they were mostly eleven, but they were balance
- 4:57Speaker 1: in that they did play higher.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Svanage eleven relative. Yeah, and who knows what would have
- 5:01Speaker 2: happened if kal Katara didn't get hurt.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Right, and then he did have a few under center
- 5:06Speaker 1: snaps if I'm not.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Mistaken that many at all.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Well, That's why I'm saying I feel like they didn't
- 5:12Speaker 1: change what they do radically. They a little under center,
- 5:16Speaker 1: They were mostly shotgun And I.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Was surprised he wasn't under center more because I view
- 5:19Speaker 2: him as kind of a play action type quarterback.
- 5:22Speaker 1: Yes, yes, because I think Adam right, well, you guys
- 5:25Speaker 1: both may remember the touchdowns he threw last year to
- 5:28Speaker 1: a Naya Smith. I think came from under center, play
- 5:32Speaker 1: action type of variety there.
- 5:33Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, I was surprised. Again, you know, they
- 5:38Speaker 2: know him better than I there, you know, who knows.
- 5:41Speaker 2: You know, we're not there during the week, you know,
- 5:43Speaker 2: But yeah, I was surprised because thirty nine of his
- 5:47Speaker 2: forty five dropbacks came in the shotgun.
- 5:50Speaker 3: And by the way, that was the thing that surprised me. Now,
- 5:53Speaker 3: I understand they're trying to get him some work, Jeff,
- 5:54Speaker 3: but my goodness, gracious, not that we're trying to predict
- 5:58Speaker 3: what they're going to do, but would seem like when
- 6:00Speaker 3: there was a good opportunity to run the football, they
- 6:01Speaker 3: threw it.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Hm.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Bigsby was phenomenal. I mean, he this that trade, which
- 6:07Speaker 3: well when it happened when they're having his kickoff turn like,
- 6:09Speaker 3: we know he's going to be a running back at
- 6:11Speaker 3: some point, they'd make a track on that.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Now he can go put on his cape and and
- 6:14Speaker 2: and then play three snaps. What's happen that could happen?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah with Parkley. But but the point is
- 6:19Speaker 2: in this game. Since we're talk at the Washington game,
- 6:22Speaker 2: I just.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Thought it was odd that they kept throwing and throwing
- 6:24Speaker 3: and throwing when it wasn't like they were behind by much.
- 6:27Speaker 3: It was just it was it was interesting their purchases
- 6:30Speaker 3: to keep throwing it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, some some part of you might wonder,
- 6:34Speaker 1: are they just trying to get a good, good look
- 6:36Speaker 1: at him? You know, it was a meaningless game and everybody,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and were they just trying to have him throw?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Who knows? Maybe they feel maybe they really like Sam
- 6:43Speaker 2: Howell and they think that they can get a third
- 6:45Speaker 2: round pick for McKee. Who knows? Who knows the reason?
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe Howl though his contract expires as well,
- 6:51Speaker 1: so yeah, it'll be. It's certainly right to say that
- 6:53Speaker 1: the Eagles quarterback room could look a lot different next year,
- 6:56Speaker 1: but the running room, with running back room with Saquan
- 6:59Speaker 1: and Big be still has I believe a year left
- 7:01Speaker 1: at him.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Yeah, next year is the Funniers deal.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It was just as a year left Bigsby.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Bigsby has a year left and of course will Shipley
- 7:09Speaker 1: has two. So you got to see that as your
- 7:12Speaker 1: top three guys in the room next year.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Greg.
- 7:15Speaker 1: With watching Tanner McKee, obviously you get a chance to
- 7:18Speaker 1: see the offensive line. You may not be keying in
- 7:20Speaker 1: on every single one, but Drew, I.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Made it a point to watch Cameron Williams because I
- 7:25Speaker 2: thought that I wanted to see him.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and what did you think?
- 7:28Speaker 2: You know, I thought he was pretty good. I mean,
- 7:30Speaker 2: you know, obviously every stamp's not great, but you could
- 7:33Speaker 2: see that he uses his arms, He understands how to
- 7:36Speaker 2: use his arms. He he uses what we call the
- 7:38Speaker 2: independent arm technique. And by that I mean you know
- 7:41Speaker 2: when a pass rusher, when he's in his vertical set.
- 7:44Speaker 2: There's basically three kinds of sets. Now there's variables, but
- 7:47Speaker 2: there's basically three kinds of pass sets. There's a short set,
- 7:50Speaker 2: there's there's kind of a forty five degree angle set,
- 7:54Speaker 2: and there's a vertical set. You know, vertical sets are
- 7:56Speaker 2: on deeper drops, So on a vertical set where you
- 8:00Speaker 2: know sometimes you know, you really have to try to
- 8:02Speaker 2: get back and set your house quick against you know,
- 8:05Speaker 2: particularly if a guy's a wide nine type rusher, you
- 8:09Speaker 2: need your arm to sort of help you so the
- 8:12Speaker 2: guy doesn't clear you, and then you end up holding
- 8:15Speaker 2: by you know, doing that right, So you know, he
- 8:18Speaker 2: used he understands how to use that independent arm technique
- 8:21Speaker 2: where he can put his arm, his outside arm out
- 8:24Speaker 2: there and at least slow the guy down so he
- 8:26Speaker 2: can continue with his kick slide and get himself in
- 8:29Speaker 2: better position. So he understands that there were a couple
- 8:32Speaker 2: of times where he just didn't quite set his house
- 8:34Speaker 2: and got driven back in the pocket. But I thought
- 8:37Speaker 2: for the most part it was more positive than negative.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Sure, And for those who maybe aren't seeing visually or
- 8:43Speaker 1: just listening to the podcast, the independent arm technique you're
- 8:45Speaker 1: talking about sometimes looks like a one handed punch, right, Like, Yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 1: you're not a punch in.
- 8:49Speaker 2: A strict sense. It's more of a feeling out. You
- 8:52Speaker 2: don't necessarily push hard because you don't want to get
- 8:55Speaker 2: off balance, right, use it as in a way to
- 8:57Speaker 2: keep your balance as right. Right.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I remember when I was younger, I would watch some
- 9:03Speaker 1: games and I'm like, I can't believe this guy is
- 9:05Speaker 1: blocking with one arm? What what sense does that make?
- 9:07Speaker 2: But I remember years ago Paul Alexander, who coached in
- 9:10Speaker 2: the league for years, yeah, the team and visited me
- 9:13Speaker 2: at films and spent a couple of days with him here,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and he was a big proponent of that. And he's
- 9:17Speaker 2: the guy who really taught me the whole concept of
- 9:19Speaker 2: the independent arm technique. You know, it helps you maintain balance,
- 9:24Speaker 2: you know. So it's you know different. Look, we know
- 9:27Speaker 2: that different on line coaches have different ways they teach.
- 9:29Speaker 2: There's not one way.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Sure, Well, for contact, Paul Alexander, coach Willie Anderson, you
- 9:35Speaker 3: might remember him left hand.
- 9:36Speaker 2: Right, who's up for the Hall of Fame against Yeah?
- 9:39Speaker 3: Yeah, Al Janner was in the league a long time.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Sure, our younger listeners may find it shocking that the
- 9:45Speaker 1: Bengals once had Hall of Fame offensive lineman given hell,
- 9:49Speaker 1: given the.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Set, Hey, just what I saw this year, I think
- 10:00Speaker 2: a Marius Mims is going to be a really good player.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Interesting, Okay, he was like, yeah, yeah, interesting, good stuff. Last,
- 10:09Speaker 1: but not least, how would you just describe before we
- 10:12Speaker 1: get into the footage of McKee, just his protection. Did
- 10:15Speaker 1: you do you feel like he was well protected? Do
- 10:18Speaker 1: you feel like he maybe didn't trust it? Obviously, Drew
- 10:21Speaker 1: Kendall was starting at center.
- 10:22Speaker 2: He's never said, by the way, I took a look
- 10:24Speaker 2: at him too, I thought he played well.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Oh good, okay, yeah, good, nice, nice.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I for the most part he was protected. Well, I
- 10:31Speaker 2: mean there's always plays in every game, you know that. Yeah, sure,
- 10:34Speaker 2: but I didn't think he was under major duress by
- 10:36Speaker 2: any means.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Awesome, Okay, let's take a look at some unless, Adam,
- 10:41Speaker 1: you had anything else to ask.
- 10:42Speaker 4: No, I just.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Thought he had this habit of keep moving to his right.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Yeah, that was.
- 10:47Speaker 3: A little strange to me, And you were just talking
- 10:50Speaker 3: about that. He wasn't like he was pressured all that much.
- 10:53Speaker 2: There were a couple of times he moved on necessarily.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yes, all right.
- 10:57Speaker 1: We might even start off right away looking at one. So, Greg,
- 11:01Speaker 1: one of your initial notes, you refer to a time
- 11:04Speaker 1: where DeVante Smith I believe was open and he doesn't
- 11:09Speaker 1: pull the trigger. So is this the he gets like
- 11:13Speaker 1: a he kind of scrambles for two yards instead.
- 11:15Speaker 2: So this was when he had Smith on the sideline
- 11:17Speaker 2: out on the second possession, and he climbed the pocket effectively,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and he had to turn this loose right.
- 11:22Speaker 1: All right, now, let me let me let's play it
- 11:24Speaker 1: and then you'll show us where he needed to turn loose.
- 11:27Speaker 1: So you can just set up the formation right now.
- 11:29Speaker 2: From what you see, Yeah, it looks like they're in
- 11:33Speaker 2: twelve personnel and it's so it's closed to the boundary
- 11:37Speaker 2: and it's twins to the field. That's a very common formation.
- 11:40Speaker 2: So obviously ninety nine point nine percent of the time
- 11:43Speaker 2: you're working to twins here, you know. That's that's the
- 11:45Speaker 2: way this formation normally works. Sure, so that's what they're
- 11:49Speaker 2: gonna do. They're gonna work to twins. And and if
- 11:52Speaker 2: you want to run it, Jeff, you'll see it's this
- 11:54Speaker 2: is play action with it with a gap scheme. Look,
- 11:57Speaker 2: you know, and he's going to drop back and he
- 12:00Speaker 2: effectively climbs the pocket right here. Okay, pocket's clean right now,
- 12:04Speaker 2: He's got a totally clean pocket. Okay, So now Smith
- 12:08Speaker 2: runs a great route as he is wont to do.
- 12:10Speaker 2: You'll see him down below. He's working on the corner.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I believe it's sane Ray still and this is beautiful.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I mean, the guy's great route runner. What can you.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Say right there, he's got this ball for a pocket quarterback,
- 12:23Speaker 5: I mean for any quarterback, but for a pure pocket quarterback,
- 12:26Speaker 5: this ball's got to be thrown right.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I mean it's there and that was the right He
- 12:31Speaker 1: certainly got a sander still at the top of the
- 12:33Speaker 1: route really well turned around here.
- 12:34Speaker 2: So Jamanta Smith is just one of those guys almost
- 12:37Speaker 2: like he was born to run routes. He just knows
- 12:39Speaker 2: how to do it right. You know, that ball's got
- 12:42Speaker 2: to be thrown. I mean, there's no two ways about it.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I could say that five more times it wouldn't change.
- 12:46Speaker 2: In fact, the ball's got to be.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Thrown right right Earth. Note to all of our listeners,
- 12:51Speaker 1: Greg says this about all quarterbacks are going through this,
- 12:54Speaker 1: not just one in particular. Yeah, he might be again,
- 12:57Speaker 1: that's a perfect example of a guy not seeing it
- 12:59Speaker 1: when it was there or not throwing it.
- 13:01Speaker 2: And that's the play, by the way, that's not like,
- 13:02Speaker 2: oh my god, that's that's the third progression in the red.
- 13:05Speaker 3: That's right.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Play right all right, Greg, this, let's diagnose the twenty
- 13:10Speaker 1: seven yard catch to DeVante Smith, because this is a
- 13:14Speaker 1: you felt like he put good touch on.
- 13:15Speaker 2: Oh this was This was a third and one. This
- 13:17Speaker 2: was a scheme, your short yardage play. They wanted to
- 13:20Speaker 2: get Smith this thousand yards. So this was actually a
- 13:23Speaker 2: really good throw. It was high and away and inside
- 13:26Speaker 2: from the corner Jones who was trailing Smith on the route.
- 13:28Speaker 2: This was a beautiful throw. This was placed perfectly.
- 13:31Speaker 1: You know when you say schemed right, because it's third
- 13:34Speaker 1: and one, this is sort of what looks like it
- 13:37Speaker 1: could be a run play more than a pass.
- 13:39Speaker 2: You'll say Smith too. As he starts, you know, he's
- 13:42Speaker 2: not running hard off the ball, right.
- 13:44Speaker 1: In fact, he almost fans a block.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, look at him. Look at it, and it looks like
- 13:47Speaker 2: he might be running inside maybe the block or you know,
- 13:50Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden he turns it up. Yeah, yep,
- 13:54Speaker 2: and that's how he gets on top of it. Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 2: And you know, look look where he throws it only.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Yeah, this is this is beautiful.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Just freeze framing this and watching how often that DeVante
- 14:05Speaker 1: Smith at one hundred and seventy pounds or whatever it
- 14:07Speaker 1: is done is just tremendous to me, just unbelievable.
- 14:12Speaker 2: You know, that was the play designed to get him
- 14:14Speaker 2: his thousand yards, and it was really well executed.
- 14:16Speaker 1: It was great design, yeah, and good throw that was
- 14:18Speaker 1: you saw the nice high arching touch from that.
- 14:21Speaker 2: I assume this is the touchdown. Now you've just brought
- 14:23Speaker 2: up this is yes, So what this is a design
- 14:26Speaker 2: play too, not when I say design, this is what
- 14:29Speaker 2: they expected that they went empty. They knew they were
- 14:32Speaker 2: going to get a cover four umbrella quarter's umbrella, which
- 14:35Speaker 2: a lot of teams play in the red zone. No
- 14:37Speaker 2: surprise in the in the high red zone, meaning between
- 14:40Speaker 2: the ten and the twenty yard line, they're going to
- 14:42Speaker 2: get the cover four quarter's umbrella and you run a
- 14:44Speaker 2: high low. So you run a high low with Covey
- 14:47Speaker 2: running the low route to hold the underneath coverage. Boom,
- 14:52Speaker 2: you see him break inside. Look at the linebacker right
- 14:54Speaker 2: there and then right behind it you get the dig
- 14:57Speaker 2: or the bend or whatever you want to call it.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And that's right in front of the safe. And this
- 15:02Speaker 2: this is the play. Because if you go back a little, Jeff,
- 15:04Speaker 2: you'll see look at when he starts to deliver the ball.
- 15:07Speaker 2: This is the play. So this is just executing the
- 15:10Speaker 2: play as you anticipated, because look he's starting his delivery
- 15:14Speaker 2: now yep, yep, yeah, he's got it. It's just your
- 15:18Speaker 2: classic high low.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, it's It's really amazing to me the difference
- 15:23Speaker 1: of a defensive look you'll see between high red zone
- 15:26Speaker 1: and low red zone.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Oh, it's just a different from a.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Few yards, but you're getting the low red zone and
- 15:30Speaker 1: they're coming after you there.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Well, it's also you've run totally different route concepts. Right,
- 15:35Speaker 2: you can't run that. You don't run that in the
- 15:36Speaker 2: low red zone. You don't have enough room.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Yeah, no, not at all. All right, So the next
- 15:41Speaker 1: one here will be the.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Yeah, this one I I looked at and looked at
- 15:46Speaker 2: and looked at and finally came down on. You know
- 15:49Speaker 2: what I thought happened? But I can't answer that. So
- 15:52Speaker 2: this this, I wasn't sure whether this was Dino, which
- 15:58Speaker 2: is to tow digs, or whether it was Dagger and
- 16:02Speaker 2: that Dotson would cross the face of reeds. So I
- 16:04Speaker 2: wasn't sure, and I ultimately came to believe that it
- 16:08Speaker 2: was Dino, and McKee, being a true anticipation thrower, expected
- 16:12Speaker 2: Reeves the safety to open with grantson. That's where I
- 16:14Speaker 2: ultimately thought, I don't want to say that with one
- 16:17Speaker 2: hundred percent certainty, but that's where I ultimately thought. So
- 16:20Speaker 2: if you run it, I can explain it so people
- 16:22Speaker 2: can see.
- 16:22Speaker 1: It, okay, And for those who can't see, three receivers
- 16:25Speaker 1: to the field there right, and you've got Cooper as
- 16:29Speaker 1: the one on the outside. You've got Dots in as
- 16:32Speaker 1: the slot, and then inside him is is Granson. So
- 16:36Speaker 1: you've got three receivers there on on the left.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Side, right, So we're dealing with we're dealing with Dotson
- 16:41Speaker 2: and Granson. So when I say it's Dinos, it's it's basically,
- 16:45Speaker 2: you know too, two kind of digs post it. You know,
- 16:47Speaker 2: it's it's a little condensed just because you're you're just
- 16:51Speaker 2: outside the red zone. So if it's Dino, you're running
- 16:55Speaker 2: which everybody runs, by the way, it's in everybody's playbook.
- 16:59Speaker 2: You're you know, what you're kind of counting on is
- 17:02Speaker 2: that Grantson would eat up the safety and that therefore
- 17:05Speaker 2: you'd get Dots and basically versus an outside leverage corner
- 17:09Speaker 2: saying a still then running the dig inside and it
- 17:12Speaker 2: would be there for the easy touchdown relatively speaking. So
- 17:17Speaker 2: throw to a spot, and you're throwing it to a
- 17:19Speaker 2: spot because it's an anticipation throw. You can't sit and
- 17:22Speaker 2: wait for it. But Reeves if it's do you know,
- 17:26Speaker 2: Reeves does not open up and go with grandson and
- 17:29Speaker 2: he's sitting right in the passing.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Lane right, you can see he leaves. He leaves Granson
- 17:33Speaker 1: there right. That might just be a smart heads up
- 17:36Speaker 1: play where he could be he was not going to throw.
- 17:39Speaker 2: You know, I don't think he was supposed to cut
- 17:41Speaker 2: in front of reason. The more I look at it,
- 17:43Speaker 2: so you know, it's just and again people say you
- 17:46Speaker 2: can't make that mistake, and yet in ideal world you can't.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I mean, we know that you can say that about
- 17:50Speaker 2: pretty much every interception. Well you can't do that, well,
- 17:53Speaker 2: no kidding.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but different sometimes you can cover that ball in
- 17:57Speaker 1: the coverage and that you should have never thrown.
- 17:59Speaker 3: That is out the case on this one.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I don't think this was a case of like, oh
- 18:03Speaker 2: my god, what the hell is he doing? Even though
- 18:05Speaker 2: it looks like that, because he hit him right between
- 18:07Speaker 2: the numbers right.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Sometimes you you should see someone and you say I
- 18:11Speaker 1: didn't see him there. In this case, he knew he was.
- 18:13Speaker 1: The safety was expect.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Something different and.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Him to open with now the way that he would
- 18:20Speaker 2: have had to open if you just go back and
- 18:22Speaker 2: I'm not knocking the play call. This is not a knock.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I'm just talking football. Is what you would ultimately like
- 18:28Speaker 2: to do here is you like to have someone challenge
- 18:32Speaker 2: the other safety so that because right now there's no
- 18:36Speaker 2: no one is controlling the other safety. So Reeves does
- 18:40Speaker 2: not have to worry about Grandson in a sense crossing
- 18:43Speaker 2: his face right to control the other safety with the route,
- 18:46Speaker 2: then Reeve's theoretically anyway on the iPad has to open
- 18:50Speaker 2: up with Grandson because otherwise there'd be no one there.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Sure, no, that makes a lot of sense.
- 18:57Speaker 2: So again, and it has to be an interest patient throw.
- 19:00Speaker 2: You can't wait to see what happens, right.
- 19:03Speaker 1: All right, All right, at least there's some method to
- 19:06Speaker 1: the madness.
- 19:06Speaker 2: So I've always explained to you guys, and I hope
- 19:08Speaker 2: the audience understands. When I look at interceptions, I try
- 19:11Speaker 2: to understand the interception and not just say, oh, that's
- 19:14Speaker 2: a bad play, right, because you know it's obviously no
- 19:17Speaker 2: one's trying to throw one. So I try to understand why,
- 19:21Speaker 2: you know, what did the quarterback see? What's the route concept?
- 19:24Speaker 2: What did he think he was getting from cover? You know,
- 19:26Speaker 2: I try to understand all the variables on the play.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Right, So now as we go on, here, Greg, one
- 19:32Speaker 1: thing and Adam. You guys, we see this all the time.
- 19:34Speaker 1: We can't know. We're not in a guy's head. But
- 19:36Speaker 1: sometimes when a guy throws a pick, or if he
- 19:38Speaker 1: takes a sack, which he had already taken a sack
- 19:41Speaker 1: by this point, they start to not trust things. Right,
- 19:43Speaker 1: they're young, he's just making his second start. So the
- 19:46Speaker 1: next few clips are going to get some examples that
- 19:49Speaker 1: Greg pointed out where the throw was there. It might
- 19:51Speaker 1: be a little high, it might be a little often.
- 19:53Speaker 1: We don't know. I don't know if it was a
- 19:55Speaker 1: lack of comfort or anything, but we'll just point them out,
- 19:57Speaker 1: all right. One, Greg, you he does get sacked, and
- 20:01Speaker 1: it's you mentioned that Dodson is at the top of
- 20:04Speaker 1: the screen on a post I believe, and he just
- 20:06Speaker 1: doesn't throw it.
- 20:08Speaker 2: This was off the motion. Yeah, yeah, this was off
- 20:10Speaker 2: the motion. Again. It's a quarter's luck. It's just outside
- 20:13Speaker 2: the red zone. So Dotson runs across and you can
- 20:17Speaker 2: see it. He drops back. It's play action. Look at
- 20:19Speaker 2: the safety. See you're taught, believe it or not. I
- 20:22Speaker 2: just just just popped into my head. I remember years.
- 20:25Speaker 2: This goes back a long time, Marty Morning, Greg sitting
- 20:27Speaker 2: in my office talking about how they teach reading safeties
- 20:30Speaker 2: with body position and body posture, and look at the
- 20:34Speaker 2: safety to that side of the field. There's no way
- 20:36Speaker 2: he's in position to play deep. So now you've got
- 20:39Speaker 2: Dotson running a post route against an outside leverage corner.
- 20:44Speaker 2: That's the throw, that's the throw, and he's all, he's
- 20:47Speaker 2: ready to throw it. Yeah, he steps up as if
- 20:49Speaker 2: he's ready to throw. You gotta throw this.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yeah, head, yep, you're right. You can put that. You
- 20:54Speaker 1: lead that into the end zone.
- 20:55Speaker 2: He's there, say you catch this ball on the on
- 20:57Speaker 2: the ear, you know, between the E and the S right.
- 21:00Speaker 3: And then then because you're watching it home, you're like,
- 21:02Speaker 3: what are they doing? What's terrible play calling? Yeah, that's
- 21:07Speaker 3: what the fans don't understand. Who are who criticized the coaches?
- 21:10Speaker 3: Sometimes right, sometimes they're way off. Yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think as people watch this, they'll
- 21:15Speaker 1: see there's four or five opportunity. We've already seen two
- 21:17Speaker 1: to throw the ball, and it just wasn't thrown there here, Greg,
- 21:21Speaker 1: I like that you pointed this out here's a situation
- 21:23Speaker 1: where Tanner mcke is going to make the correct read
- 21:26Speaker 1: going to a backside dig I believe, but he doesn't
- 21:29Speaker 1: put the ball where.
- 21:30Speaker 2: This was actually a really good read. This is actually
- 21:32Speaker 2: advanced quarterbacking for a guy who hasn't played. This is
- 21:35Speaker 2: advanced quarterbacking. Okay, you're welcome. This is advanced quarterbacking. They're
- 21:45Speaker 2: there in my garbage, you know.
- 21:46Speaker 1: Yeah, no problem, no problem. So Covey goes in motion.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Right, So he's the initial read is trips, okay, which
- 21:53Speaker 2: is normally the case, not always, but you know in
- 21:56Speaker 2: this case it is. So he looks to trips. It's
- 21:59Speaker 2: not clean, you know, I think he wants because this
- 22:02Speaker 2: is third and four, I believe, is it not?
- 22:04Speaker 1: It is third and four?
- 22:05Speaker 3: Yep.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I think what he wants without knowing one hundred percent,
- 22:08Speaker 2: but I think he wants Covey on the whip route
- 22:10Speaker 2: right at the sticks and get the first down. And
- 22:13Speaker 2: it's it's not clean. It's not clean at all. So
- 22:16Speaker 2: he does a great job here of resetting and coming
- 22:20Speaker 2: back to the backside dig By Dotson. Because notice how
- 22:23Speaker 2: that time's out, because it all times out with the
- 22:26Speaker 2: drop and the set and the whole deal and he
- 22:28Speaker 2: makes exactly the right read and just you know, this
- 22:31Speaker 2: is a throw. You know, again, we're not ripping McKee here.
- 22:35Speaker 2: I hope people understand that. I'm just saying that for
- 22:38Speaker 2: a pocket quarterback, you know, you gotta make this throw.
- 22:41Speaker 2: And if he kept playing, you know what, I bet
- 22:43Speaker 2: he'd make this throw.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Oh I heard Tene mckeithal. I mean, I'm sure he
- 22:46Speaker 1: would have told you he needs to make that throw.
- 22:49Speaker 1: That's not yeah. Yeah, yeah. Here we had a fourth
- 22:53Speaker 1: and three where he's going to throw an out to Dotson.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I just I just felt like he didn't throw the
- 22:57Speaker 1: out very good for most of the game.
- 23:00Speaker 2: But so you're talking about to play with a minute
- 23:02Speaker 2: twenty one remaining. Yeah, yeah, you gotta make this throw.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, this is routine. Got to hit it. Yep.
- 23:11Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I think I said it might be grantsome,
- 23:14Speaker 1: but yeah.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah, incredible that pitch and catch.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's unfortunate that was there for him.
- 23:20Speaker 2: Yep.
- 23:21Speaker 1: I was trying to say if there's anything mechanical off
- 23:24Speaker 1: his back foot, but it looks like he just just overthrew.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Yeah. But I mean the people who want to say
- 23:28Speaker 2: and the prosy stinks, and I mean that's you know,
- 23:30Speaker 2: I'm not even going to engage in that BS. I mean,
- 23:32Speaker 2: you know, that's that's pointless.
- 23:35Speaker 1: This one was probably one. I think this was forty
- 23:38Speaker 1: seconds left and he really he's probably kicking himself because
- 23:41Speaker 1: it's first intend he's got Covey and he just.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Was just the one where he ran up. Let me see.
- 23:48Speaker 1: Covey on the crosser and he just oh.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to hit this, because then McCovey can run,
- 23:53Speaker 2: not for a long distance, but he gets out of
- 23:55Speaker 2: bounds and feel good because that was the first play
- 23:58Speaker 2: of the series.
- 23:59Speaker 1: If I'm not mistaken, the first and ten play, I mean,
- 24:01Speaker 1: you got you're down by seven.
- 24:02Speaker 2: You can feel good about it because he catches it.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Maybe he gets to the forty yard line and he
- 24:07Speaker 2: runs out of bounds and all of a sudden, you
- 24:09Speaker 2: feel like, okay, we're in business.
- 24:10Speaker 3: He just had some throws in this game where we've
- 24:14Speaker 3: seen him, especially training camp, be very.
- 24:17Speaker 2: I can tell you right now, Adam that he's he's
- 24:20Speaker 2: probably didn't sleep well last night.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Oh he knows. Oh man, I can't believe I missed that.
- 24:25Speaker 2: Yeah myself, because he knows he can make them yep.
- 24:28Speaker 1: One last one. This is third and ten.
- 24:31Speaker 2: But this was the one where he climbed the pocket
- 24:33Speaker 2: for no reason. Yes, so we're gonna throw here too.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Where where's the design of the place supposed to take.
- 24:40Speaker 2: This this pass? I'll tell you in a sec let me.
- 24:43Speaker 2: I believe if you sent in the pocket, your dots
- 24:45Speaker 2: it on the curl route to the field. Yeah, that
- 24:48Speaker 2: was that's where it should have gone.
- 24:49Speaker 1: So dots bottom, yep, we'll see it.
- 24:57Speaker 2: That's what the whole route concept is. You got the
- 24:59Speaker 2: you got the dram ground, you got the vertical, and
- 25:01Speaker 2: and he sits right open in the curl, in the
- 25:04Speaker 2: curl zone. You see it.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Yeah, right there?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Yeah, right there, that's the that's the design of the play.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Yep.
- 25:09Speaker 2: And and he climbed the pocket for no reason. You know,
- 25:12Speaker 2: I can't speak to why.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I mean he did, right, just maybe not comfortable, I
- 25:17Speaker 1: don't know.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Yeah, but you get into the you know, you know,
- 25:21Speaker 2: nutcrunch time in the game, and you just you know,
- 25:23Speaker 2: it's you haven't played a lot of football. I mean,
- 25:26Speaker 2: you know that's the people don't understand. I mean, yeah,
- 25:28Speaker 2: he hasn't played a lot of football.
- 25:30Speaker 1: Right now at this point, Greg. You can see him
- 25:33Speaker 1: standing like he's gonna eventually get a lot of pressure
- 25:35Speaker 1: on him, but it's the balls.
- 25:36Speaker 2: There is no pressure on him if he's sat in
- 25:38Speaker 2: the pocket.
- 25:39Speaker 1: If yeah, I was gonna say, if you just stayed
- 25:41Speaker 1: there and then because you deliver that right as the receiver.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Is right now, well the bull should be coming out
- 25:46Speaker 2: right now, close to.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Now, yeah, yeah, yeah, And he just held onto it
- 25:51Speaker 1: and took the sack.
- 25:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Hey.

- 29:25Speaker 2: the guy hasn't played football.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Yeah, And I also think when you're playing behind a
- 29:29Speaker 1: line with two guys that have never played in the oh,
- 29:31Speaker 1: never started in the NFL, or that that gets bit
- 29:35Speaker 1: good stuff, all right. So that was a good comprehensive
- 29:38Speaker 1: look at Tanner McKee part one, and in the next
- 29:42Speaker 1: part we will do a little bit of a look
- 29:44Speaker 1: at the early look at the San Francisco forty nine
