- 0:42of the 2024 crossfit
- 0:44semifinals and I have with
- 0:46me the one and only cam
- 0:48crockett what's going on
- 0:49cam how are you I'm good
- 0:51I'm good this is three
- 0:53years in a row now man yeah
- 0:56or when did you start doing
- 0:58these um 21 or 22 21 21 so
- 1:00this is the fourth fourth year then
- 1:04uh make that 22. okay yeah
- 1:08this is our third year yeah
- 1:10it's a cool little like
- 1:11tradition now yeah yeah um
- 1:14So yeah, I've known you for a while now,
- 1:17knew you even before this series.
- 1:19Yeah.
- 1:20Because during the COVID year,
- 1:22I was a judge at Rogue for
- 1:25one Mr. Saxon Pancheck,
- 1:27and you happened to be
- 1:28there kind of rooting him on.
- 1:30So that's where we met for the first time.
- 1:32Before I get into anything full detail,
- 1:35I have a huge question for you.
- 1:38yeah so I was doing some
- 1:40research on you and I
- 1:42pulled up your information
- 1:46and this was your profile
- 1:48picture yeah um I don't
- 1:52remember when I made that
- 1:53my like or background or
- 1:55profile picture whatever it
- 1:56is for uh crossfit.com but
- 2:00Yeah, I just thought it was funny.
- 2:02Everyone else had either no
- 2:04picture or something serious,
- 2:06so I was like,
- 2:06I'm just putting some
- 2:07chicken nuggets up there.
- 2:09Yeah,
- 2:09and they look like a McDonald's
- 2:11chicken nugget.
- 2:12Yeah, they're just like McNuggets.
- 2:14Yeah,
- 2:15they got the figure eight shape like
- 2:17a good old McDonald's chicken nugget.
- 2:19Yeah, I probably did that back in 2018,
- 2:232017, something like that.
- 2:25It just never changed it.
- 2:26Yeah, just had to keep it.
- 2:28Yeah, I had Jack Rosema on last night,
- 2:31and his profile pic is his
- 2:34freshman college wrestling picture.
- 2:36Oh, that's funny, yeah.
- 2:38And no facial hair,
- 2:40like the serious wrestler stare down.
- 2:43Yeah.
- 2:45It's hilarious.
- 2:46Yeah, Jack's a good dude.
- 2:48Yeah.
- 2:49And any affinity for Chicken
- 2:51Nuggets or just trying to be funny?
- 2:53I just kind of thought it was funny.
- 2:56Didn't know if anyone was
- 2:57going to see it or not,
- 2:57but I just thought it was funny.
- 3:00Here we are in 2024.
- 3:01Someone saw it.
- 3:02Yeah.
- 3:04And now the whole audience gets a chance.
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:06Awesome.
- 3:08So, um, so yeah,
- 3:11so we've been doing this a while.
- 3:14Um,
- 3:16You came in to last year in
- 3:19the best seating you'd ever done before.
- 3:21Yeah.
- 3:22And it didn't kind of play
- 3:23out that way at the
- 3:24semifinals on the floor.
- 3:26Yeah.
- 3:27So what did you learn in
- 3:29that moment last year when
- 3:31you were going through all that?
- 3:33Um, I mean,
- 3:35definitely learned what some
- 3:36weaknesses were.
- 3:37I always kind of knew that like the heavy,
- 3:40because I feel like a lot
- 3:41of the workouts last year
- 3:42was just like kind of heavy,
- 3:43like brute strength.
- 3:45And we had that sled pull in
- 3:46event one that that was
- 3:48just so like the second I
- 3:50would try to pull it,
- 3:51my feet would just slide
- 3:52out from under me.
- 3:53And it just took like so
- 3:56much effort just to get that sled moving.
- 3:57And in practice,
- 3:58the sled was like not a big deal at all.
- 4:01Like I thought it was all
- 4:02about the machines.
- 4:04then in the in reality the
- 4:05machines kind of meant
- 4:06nothing and the sled meant
- 4:08like everything um and then
- 4:10work out too those ruck
- 4:12muscle ups I had a hard
- 4:14time getting them like when
- 4:16they announced it but I was
- 4:18able to do them
- 4:19But in the process, like,
- 4:20I just kept – because it took me a bit to,
- 4:23like, finally get them,
- 4:24that I was just hammering them for, like,
- 4:26the whole, like,
- 4:26week or two leading up to semifinals.
- 4:29And that just blew up my shoulder.
- 4:32Like,
- 4:32my right shoulder just – anytime I – even,
- 4:34like, in the warm-up area,
- 4:35after doing one,
- 4:36my shoulder was just on fire.
- 4:38And, like,
- 4:39I couldn't really do much with it.
- 4:40So I just kind of sat there
- 4:44in the event and just kept
- 4:45trying to get as many as I could.
- 4:47Didn't get a whole lot, and that kind of –
- 4:50Made the rest of the weekend a lot harder.
- 4:52Like when we had the heavy
- 4:54dumbbells for Linda,
- 4:57it just made it like those
- 4:58– like it was my right arm,
- 5:00my right shoulder that just kept failing.
- 5:02So I like really had to like
- 5:03slow down and break it up.
- 5:05then we had that one rep max
- 5:08snatch and like every
- 5:10single snatch I did it felt
- 5:12like my right shoulder was
- 5:13just going to give out and
- 5:15overhead squats and
- 5:16handstand push-ups and that
- 5:17didn't make it any easier
- 5:19so I tried taping it up
- 5:20getting it worked on as
- 5:21best I could I was still
- 5:24proud like how I did in
- 5:24semi-finals but it was like
- 5:26if you wanted to program a
- 5:28competition for me to do
- 5:29bad that was it like shoulder or not like
- 5:34It was everything I was bad at.
- 5:37So was the shoulder injured
- 5:39or were just overuse?
- 5:41I think it was just overuse
- 5:42because I didn't do
- 5:43anything to rehab it or anything.
- 5:44Just like took time off
- 5:46after semifinals and it's fine now.
- 5:50Okay.
- 5:51So...
- 5:53So that brings me to an
- 5:55interesting question, right?
- 5:56The workouts are already out.
- 5:59They came out, leaked out, came out early.
- 6:02I don't think they intended
- 6:06to release them that soon.
- 6:08I don't think so either.
- 6:10But now the athletes have
- 6:11them in their hands.
- 6:13And how do you not do the
- 6:16same thing this year that
- 6:17you did last year and not
- 6:20overdo it on what you know?
- 6:22Yeah, well, this year,
- 6:25these workouts are actually
- 6:26pretty good for me.
- 6:27It's a lot of things that I'm good at.
- 6:29And thankfully, at least as for right now,
- 6:32they haven't announced any
- 6:33like weird gymnastics or
- 6:35like stuff like that.
- 6:37What I love about it is it's
- 6:39all pretty like simple workouts.
- 6:41It's like kind of pretty classic CrossFit.
- 6:43There's nothing like –
- 6:44there's no pirouette like
- 6:46handstand walks.
- 6:48There's no like sled.
- 6:49And there could be.
- 6:50Who knows?
- 6:50Yeah, as far as I know,
- 6:51it's not – they're not weird.
- 6:53There's no ruck for
- 6:54muscle-ups or anything.
- 6:56There's no like sled that we
- 6:57have to pull on the ground.
- 6:59That was like a weird cloth,
- 7:01like nylon sled too,
- 7:02so it just made it even worse.
- 7:05So far, there's nothing weird.
- 7:07It's just all pretty straightforward,
- 7:09like just kind of classic CrossFit,
- 7:12which is what I really like.
- 7:14I don't know if you saw Boz
- 7:16on the barbell spin the other night.
- 7:18No.
- 7:19He did give some
- 7:20clarification to some of the workouts.
- 7:22Okay.
- 7:23Where the lunge with the
- 7:24dumbbells is a farmer's carry.
- 7:28perfect that's what we
- 7:29that's what I practice and
- 7:30it's hard enough but the
- 7:32farmers carry that the run
- 7:34is not on a machine yeah I
- 7:35saw that that it's gonna be
- 7:37like it they're doing like
- 7:39laps on the floor I think I
- 7:42don't know exactly how it's
- 7:43gonna work but they're
- 7:45they're setting it up as a
- 7:46run somehow may go outside
- 7:48the venue in some places um
- 7:51so it's gonna vary from place to place
- 7:54And then they asked him
- 7:56about the handstand walk
- 7:58and he would not give any clarification,
- 8:02meaning that there's got to
- 8:04be something to it.
- 8:05Yeah, that makes me a little nervous,
- 8:06but yeah.
- 8:09That is not a clue.
- 8:11I can, but like, yeah, gymnastics,
- 8:12high skill gymnastics has
- 8:13always kind of not been my
- 8:15strongest thing.
- 8:17But, yeah, we'll see, hopefully.
- 8:19And thankfully we're week three this year,
- 8:21so we'll find out what
- 8:22they're doing week one and
- 8:23be able to practice it a little bit.
- 8:26But not overpractice.
- 8:27Yeah, not overdo it again.
- 8:29I think it was just that ruck.
- 8:30Because I was not the only
- 8:31athlete that had problems, like,
- 8:33injury-wise with that ruck.
- 8:35Like, Alex Caron,
- 8:36suck what happened to him
- 8:37because he got kicked out for it.
- 8:39But he just stood there
- 8:40because he heard it practicing it.
- 8:42And I think there was
- 8:43another guy in the East that, like,
- 8:45had problems with it too.
- 8:47So, like,
- 8:48I was not the only one that had
- 8:49some sort of injury issue.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:52Yeah, Alex had that peck,
- 8:54and that took him out pretty hard.
- 8:58Yeah, that sucked.
- 8:58I think the only reason I didn't get, like,
- 9:02withdrawn,
- 9:02like CrossFit didn't withdraw
- 9:03me is that I kept trying.
- 9:04Like, because he just didn't even try.
- 9:07He just stood there.
- 9:08And I kept trying to do muscle-ups,
- 9:10and it just wasn't happening.
- 9:11It was like my shoulders
- 9:12would not allow it.
- 9:14But I got a few of them, not a lot.
- 9:16But I think because I kept trying,
- 9:18they didn't withdraw me.
- 9:21So you said you've looked at
- 9:22the workouts and you're
- 9:24definitely happier this year than last.
- 9:26Oh, yeah.
- 9:26The way they look.
- 9:27It's very much classic CrossFit.
- 9:29We've talked about this with
- 9:31a lot of the athletes this week.
- 9:33And it's like you could drop them in 2015.
- 9:37Yeah.
- 9:38And it still would fit.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:42The older regionals workouts
- 9:43are like some of my
- 9:44favorite workouts that I've done.
- 9:46Like I love those workouts.
- 9:47So yeah, this reminds me a lot of that,
- 9:49which I really like.
- 9:50So before last year,
- 9:52you were really trending in
- 9:53a good direction of like
- 9:55climbing the leaderboard.
- 9:56Do you feel this year now
- 9:58you have that shot again?
- 10:00So this year is a lot different.
- 10:03I've made a ton of changes this year,
- 10:04like just in life.
- 10:08I'm a firefighter now.
- 10:09So I basically took like
- 10:12four months off this summer, fall,
- 10:14winter kind of.
- 10:16like barely training or not
- 10:17training CrossFit at all.
- 10:18Cause I was in the fire
- 10:20Academy for a few months.
- 10:21And then after that I was in
- 10:23EMT school for a few months
- 10:26or a little over a month.
- 10:28So like that whole time I was there,
- 10:29I was not really training
- 10:32like CrossFit at least like fire school.
- 10:34It's,
- 10:35it's plenty of hard without doing
- 10:37CrossFit, like all the stuff we do there.
- 10:39So that was good.
- 10:40But like EMT school,
- 10:41was just six weeks in a classroom all day,
- 10:45every day.
- 10:46So not a whole lot of physical activity.
- 10:48So I graduated from EMT
- 10:51school the day of the Open
- 10:54starting this year.
- 10:56So I was not in very good
- 10:57shape in the Open,
- 10:59and I didn't finish very
- 11:00well on the leaderboard.
- 11:03But I didn't even think I
- 11:04was going to qualify for
- 11:06semifinals this year,
- 11:07and I was kind of okay with it.
- 11:09Like, I'm going to do regionals.
- 11:10I'm going to try.
- 11:11Part of me didn't even want
- 11:11to do regionals because it was just, like,
- 11:13stressful.
- 11:13But not regionals, sorry, quarterfinals.
- 11:17But I still did it,
- 11:18and I was completely surprised at myself.
- 11:20Like, I thought I was, like,
- 11:22I'm either not going to
- 11:23make it or I'm going to, like,
- 11:24barely squeak in.
- 11:25And I ended up, I think,
- 11:2519th after all the penalties and stuff.
- 11:29So I was very surprised with
- 11:30how I did in quarterfinals.
- 11:33And this year, like,
- 11:34last year I went to Mayhem
- 11:35to do quarterfinals.
- 11:37This year, I was completely on my own,
- 11:40just like some friends of
- 11:41ours at the gym were doing it.
- 11:43I was doing the workouts and
- 11:44I had no idea if my scores
- 11:46were good or not.
- 11:48I was texting Amanda and I was like,
- 11:49do you think this is good?
- 11:50I have no idea.
- 11:51Should I redo this workout?
- 11:53And then when the first two
- 11:54scores came out and I was
- 11:56sitting in the top 20, I was like, oh.
- 11:58yes,
- 11:59I am doing pretty good and I'm in
- 12:00pretty good shape.
- 12:02So yeah.
- 12:03Yeah.
- 12:04And then I was like, I'm not like,
- 12:06because I haven't really
- 12:07been able to train as much this year.
- 12:08Like I'm not,
- 12:09I haven't trained nearly as
- 12:10much this year as I did in
- 12:12previous years that I was like,
- 12:14I'm just like,
- 12:15not even gonna put any
- 12:16pressure on semi-finals.
- 12:17Just,
- 12:18like do the best I can and everything.
- 12:20And then the workouts got announced.
- 12:21I was like, damn it.
- 12:22These are actually really
- 12:23good workouts for me.
- 12:24So that kind of put a lot
- 12:25more pressure on training
- 12:27and everything since then.
- 12:30So now that you're through school, are you,
- 12:32you're working as a
- 12:33full-time firefighter?
- 12:34Yeah.
- 12:34Working full time.
- 12:35I'm actually not done with school.
- 12:37I'm only done with fire and
- 12:39EMT school in our department.
- 12:41Everyone has to be a paramedic.
- 12:43So I start paramedic school
- 12:45end of June and that's a full,
- 12:47a whole year.
- 12:49Oh wow.
- 12:50Yeah.
- 12:51But thankfully it's,
- 12:52it's local for fire and EMT school.
- 12:54I had to go down to the
- 12:55state fire Academy in
- 12:56Columbus and like we stayed
- 12:58in dorms down there Monday
- 12:59through Friday and then
- 13:01like come home on the weekends and
- 13:03didn't drop by for dinner or
- 13:05say hi no I should have but
- 13:07it was when we weren't in
- 13:08class it was study you
- 13:11probably drove by my house
- 13:12on the way home man I
- 13:14probably did it's in
- 13:14reynoldsburg right yeah I
- 13:17know you're in reynoldsburg
- 13:18I'm not I'm not I'm
- 13:19actually north of the city
- 13:21okay the players area okay
- 13:23yeah so I definitely drove
- 13:24drove through there
- 13:24Yeah.
- 13:26To get back on 71,
- 13:26you definitely went past my house.
- 13:29Yeah, I probably did.
- 13:31But yeah, Reynoldsburg, it's funny.
- 13:33When my daughter was born
- 13:34and she was young,
- 13:35which was many moons ago,
- 13:39that fire academy used to be a drive-in.
- 13:41Really?
- 13:42Yeah.
- 13:43So we used to go down there
- 13:44to the drive-in theater
- 13:45when she was a baby.
- 13:47So my wife and I could watch
- 13:48adult movies and she would
- 13:49just fall asleep in the backseat.
- 13:51oh that's funny yeah and
- 13:53then they they closed it
- 13:54down to to build the fire
- 13:55academy yeah yeah it's a
- 13:58it's an the fire academy is
- 14:00awesome it's a really cool
- 14:01place yeah lots of land to
- 14:03do a lot of cool things
- 14:05yeah they have a lot of
- 14:06cool stuff there like
- 14:08departments from all over
- 14:09the state go there to use
- 14:10the stuff they have so uh
- 14:14always been a dream to be a firefighter
- 14:17Um, I mean,
- 14:18my mom's pulled up a bunch of
- 14:19pictures now of me as a
- 14:20little kid dressing as a
- 14:21firefighter or like her
- 14:23birthdays and stuff like
- 14:24firefighter theme.
- 14:25So I know it's kind of
- 14:27always like in the back of
- 14:28my mind to at least like
- 14:29look into it or like maybe
- 14:32like something I would want to do.
- 14:34Um,
- 14:34especially if like the army didn't work
- 14:36out, which I'm not in the army anymore.
- 14:38So it kind of didn't work out.
- 14:39And then, uh,
- 14:40actually it's kind of funny
- 14:41how it happened.
- 14:41So there's a few,
- 14:43there's been multiple
- 14:44firefighters in our gym.
- 14:45I'm sure every CrossFit gym
- 14:47has a bunch of them,
- 14:48but there was one that I
- 14:49just texted and I was like, Hey,
- 14:52I'm thinking about going to
- 14:53the fire Academy.
- 14:54Like,
- 14:55just want to know if I could
- 14:56like call you sometime or
- 14:57meet up and talk about it
- 14:58he's like actually our
- 14:59department is hiring and
- 15:01the deadline where we're
- 15:02like sending people with no
- 15:03certifications and anything
- 15:05through all the school and
- 15:06like paying for it and all
- 15:07that and the deadline is
- 15:09tomorrow so like if you
- 15:11want if you want to do it
- 15:12get your application in so
- 15:14I got my application in and
- 15:16then uh did all the
- 15:18interviews and um
- 15:20ride-alongs and stuff and then got hired
- 15:24really cool end of july last
- 15:26year and so when we were
- 15:29talking to schedulers you
- 15:30work that like one day on
- 15:33two days off yeah 24 on 48
- 15:35off yeah yeah which is
- 15:39actually pretty it's pretty
- 15:40awesome yeah I can imagine
- 15:43and then when we talked
- 15:44last year you had like just got married
- 15:47I think we were about,
- 15:49we got married June 9th last year.
- 15:50So I think it was a little bit.
- 15:52Yeah,
- 15:52we got married like a few weeks after
- 15:53semifinals.
- 15:55And it was actually funny.
- 15:56I got married on Friday.
- 15:58The next Monday was a ride.
- 16:00I do a ride along for the department.
- 16:03It was like right after our wedding.
- 16:04But yeah, we got married last summer.
- 16:07That's quite the honeymoon.
- 16:08What do you think of that?
- 16:09That was pretty good.
- 16:12We haven't gone on a honeymoon yet.
- 16:13We just haven't been able to.
- 16:15You got to do the ride-along.
- 16:16She didn't get to come with you?
- 16:17No.
- 16:20No, she's hung out at the station, though,
- 16:21a couple times.
- 16:22She already knows some of
- 16:24the people that are at the department.
- 16:26It's kind of weird.
- 16:29Almost half of the
- 16:29department has had some
- 16:31affiliation with Cadre,
- 16:33the gym I go to at some point.
- 16:36So she already knows a bunch of them.
- 16:39So the Amanda you mentioned,
- 16:41and this was kind of in my notes,
- 16:43is last year she was your
- 16:45training partner,
- 16:46and that is Amanda Barnhart,
- 16:48CrossFit legend,
- 16:50multiple-time games athlete.
- 16:52She had an off-season where
- 16:53she was injured and not
- 16:55able to really do a lot.
- 16:56Yeah.
- 16:57You took kind of an off-season off,
- 17:00and now she's back healthy
- 17:03and doing pretty well
- 17:04through the process as well.
- 17:05Yeah.
- 17:06Have you guys linked up to train again?
- 17:08Yeah,
- 17:08I actually just got back from her gym
- 17:10like an hour or so ago.
- 17:14So just like an old sock,
- 17:16it just fit again and you
- 17:17guys are back at it?
- 17:18Yeah, it kind of worked out kind of weird.
- 17:20She didn't really train.
- 17:21We were kind of in the same boat.
- 17:22She didn't really get to
- 17:23train a whole lot during
- 17:24the summer and fall because
- 17:26of her injury.
- 17:28And then I didn't get to
- 17:28train a whole lot because I
- 17:29was at school.
- 17:30So we were kind of both in
- 17:31the same boat a little bit.
- 17:33as far as like just being stressed,
- 17:35not knowing if how
- 17:36quarterfinals or the season
- 17:37was going to go.
- 17:38I mean, but so far it's going pretty well.
- 17:41And yeah,
- 17:42she's seemed super fit right now.
- 17:44So,
- 17:45so what's it like having someone like
- 17:47that as a, as support when, when you're,
- 17:51when you're both anxious in this time,
- 17:53because you haven't been
- 17:54able to put in the work
- 17:57that you have in years past.
- 17:58Yeah.
- 17:59It's actually, it's been super helpful.
- 18:01Like,
- 18:02basically knowing that like
- 18:05when it's like when you're
- 18:06super stressed or beat up
- 18:07and you're thinking like it
- 18:09sucks looking on instagram
- 18:10because then you see people
- 18:11that are like they're
- 18:12crushing this and they're
- 18:13doing all this you're like
- 18:14well I'm not and then she's
- 18:15like it's okay like that's
- 18:17perfectly fine like no one
- 18:19is 100 all the time like a
- 18:23lot of times you don't feel good like
- 18:26You're maybe not... You have
- 18:27a whole list of stuff.
- 18:28You have six things you want
- 18:30to do that day and you only
- 18:31have enough energy or time
- 18:34to get through three of them.
- 18:35That's perfectly... It happens.
- 18:37It's not ideal, but it does happen.
- 18:41It's okay.
- 18:43Instagram comparison is just...
- 18:46Yeah, it's, it, it sucks.
- 18:47That kind of, that sucked when I was at,
- 18:49like when I was at a fire
- 18:50and EMT school and not
- 18:51really training and I was
- 18:52like seeing all the stuff
- 18:52people were doing.
- 18:53Like, yeah, that was,
- 18:54that was not fun to kind of look at.
- 18:58So yeah, it's,
- 19:01it's comparison is a thief of joy.
- 19:04You know,
- 19:04I know that's a famous saying and,
- 19:06but it is so true.
- 19:08And especially in this era
- 19:10with everybody posting
- 19:11their highlight reels on,
- 19:13on a social media.
- 19:14Yeah.
- 19:15And even like just comparing,
- 19:17like both of us were kind
- 19:18of going through it,
- 19:19comparing our own selves to
- 19:21where we were last year.
- 19:22Cause last year we were both like insanely,
- 19:24we both finished top 10 in the open.
- 19:26We both had really long quarterfinals.
- 19:28We both just felt really fit last year.
- 19:30And then this year we don't like,
- 19:32even though we are still fit,
- 19:33we're just not as fit as we
- 19:35don't feel or whatever as
- 19:37fit as we were last year.
- 19:38And it's like,
- 19:39that's another thing that
- 19:40can cause you to like kind
- 19:42of doubt yourself and like,
- 19:43a little anxious and freak
- 19:45out a little bit so it's
- 19:47kind of nice to have like
- 19:48have someone else tell you
- 19:49that like that's like it's
- 19:50fine now you're just
- 19:52pouring salt in my wound
- 19:54dude because when I when I
- 19:56had my back injury in 2017
- 19:57and like for the next
- 20:00couple years all I did was compare yeah
- 20:04today's Scott to the old Scott.
- 20:06And it, it never worked out well.
- 20:08It wasn't until I realized I'm a,
- 20:11just a different Scott now.
- 20:12And I have to go down my new path.
- 20:15Did I find happiness again?
- 20:16Yeah.
- 20:17My cat is getting in the camera.
- 20:20That's another change for this year.
- 20:21We got a cat.
- 20:24It's all good, man.
- 20:25Yeah.
- 20:26My dog's been barking at
- 20:27every prime driver as we've been talking.
- 20:29So I've been petting my dog
- 20:31the whole time.
- 20:31Cause he's anxious.
- 20:32Yeah.
- 20:33So, um, so that, that,
- 20:36that lends itself to a
- 20:37really interesting question.
- 20:39I know in years past we've
- 20:40talked and you've had
- 20:41really focused goals on
- 20:44trying to make the games
- 20:46and you had a belief in
- 20:47yourself that you were able to do that.
- 20:50Now with all this other
- 20:51stuff on your plate,
- 20:53do you have different priorities?
- 20:54Oh yeah, for sure.
- 20:56Like now the priorities kind
- 20:58of shifted that like, I mean,
- 20:59we just got married and
- 21:01we want to eventually have
- 21:02kids like save up for a
- 21:03house and all of that.
- 21:04And like,
- 21:07all I was doing last year was
- 21:08pretty much just like coaching CrossFit,
- 21:10like as much as I could
- 21:11make as much money as I could.
- 21:12But like,
- 21:13that's not really like a good
- 21:16financial future or something like that.
- 21:18So now that, uh, like I have a good,
- 21:22like I have a career that like,
- 21:24I'm going to do for the next 25,
- 21:2730 years.
- 21:27Like, who knows?
- 21:28Like,
- 21:29that's kind of been a little
- 21:30bit more stable and like
- 21:33just different and it's
- 21:35been a ton of fun it's
- 21:36almost like getting like my
- 21:37mind off of training and
- 21:39like just something else to focus on like
- 21:42starting else something new.
- 21:43Like I'm focusing on
- 21:45training to be like a good firefighter,
- 21:46to be a good paramedic,
- 21:48like once I go through
- 21:49school and everything.
- 21:50So it kind of does keep my
- 21:52mind off of competing for a little bit.
- 21:54And like,
- 21:55I kind of almost wrote off this year,
- 21:57like in next year,
- 21:58cause I'll be in paramedic
- 21:59school next year that like,
- 22:01it's okay if it doesn't happen right now.
- 22:03Like there's other things
- 22:04that are more important.
- 22:06but I was still able to
- 22:07qualify for semifinals this
- 22:08year in a pretty good spot.
- 22:10So it's kind of nice to know
- 22:11that my whole life doesn't
- 22:14have to revolve around
- 22:15training and CrossFit to
- 22:16still do well at it.
- 22:20How old are you?
- 22:2026 now.
- 22:23So you actually still have some time.
- 22:25Yeah, I know.
- 22:27My wife's reminding me of that too.
- 22:28She's like, it's okay.
- 22:30It's like the next two years
- 22:31don't go well.
- 22:33You'll be 28 at that point.
- 22:34There's plenty of games
- 22:35athletes that are older than that.
- 22:39So let me ask you this.
- 22:41With these different
- 22:42priorities and the sole
- 22:44focus not being on training
- 22:46and you have all these other obligations,
- 22:49You look at someone like Ariel Lowen,
- 22:51who when she was the sole focus,
- 22:54she couldn't make the games.
- 22:55Yeah.
- 22:56When she did it for fun and
- 22:58it wasn't really the focus
- 23:00and she just wanted a cool
- 23:01sign for a garage,
- 23:03she's become one of the
- 23:04best CrossFitters in the world.
- 23:05Makes the podium at the games.
- 23:07Right.
- 23:08Yeah, I think there is an element of that.
- 23:09Last year I put so much
- 23:12worth and pressure on
- 23:13myself to try to make the
- 23:15games and everything.
- 23:17And basically I was like just super,
- 23:19like that's all I did all
- 23:21year was just train and
- 23:22then think about training,
- 23:23think about competing.
- 23:24And like now I'm not.
- 23:26And yeah,
- 23:27it's almost like kind of turned
- 23:28out better.
- 23:28Yeah.
- 23:30It's funny.
- 23:31I, you know,
- 23:32it's funny that you work out
- 23:33with Amanda cause I think
- 23:34the same things with her.
- 23:35She has so much more in her
- 23:36life right now.
- 23:37Yeah.
- 23:38And not that good or bad or indifferent,
- 23:40whatever.
- 23:41It's just,
- 23:42she has to focus on different things.
- 23:44Yeah.
- 23:45I wonder if that takes some
- 23:46of the pressure off and she
- 23:47actually does better this year.
- 23:49Yeah, maybe like we'll see.
- 23:51I mean, it's still hard enough.
- 23:53I think he's a Kingston's five now,
- 23:56like raising a five year
- 23:59old is definitely not easy by any means.
- 24:00Like, right.
- 24:01Even like on her days off from training,
- 24:04like she doesn't really have a day off.
- 24:05Like now she's like,
- 24:06has to be a mom and kind of
- 24:09just like thrown into it.
- 24:10Like there's no,
- 24:11there was no buildup or anything.
- 24:12Just like, here you are like,
- 24:14here's a five year old.
- 24:16Yeah,
- 24:16and we actually had her scheduled for
- 24:18yesterday, but those things pop up.
- 24:20Yeah, she told me about that.
- 24:23Yeah.
- 24:25And she promised to come on later,
- 24:28and I'm super excited to
- 24:29talk to her and catch up.
- 24:32But, yeah, I've been a dad.
- 24:33I know what it's like.
- 24:35You think you're going down this route,
- 24:37and all of a sudden, nope,
- 24:38we're going over here.
- 24:39Yeah.
- 24:40Yeah.
- 24:41Yeah,
- 24:42so that's a whole other set of
- 24:44challenges that –
- 24:45I don't have yet.
- 24:46And like, we'll see when we get there,
- 24:48when it's like, I'm sure it's way,
- 24:51no matter what anybody says
- 24:51about having kids, it's,
- 24:53you don't really know until you do.
- 24:56Do you can,
- 24:56do you still consider yourself
- 24:57a mayhem athlete?
- 25:00So that's another change
- 25:01that we've made this year.
- 25:02Um,
- 25:04because I started training
- 25:05with amanda and she's hwpo
- 25:07like last year I would do
- 25:08whatever she did like when
- 25:10I went over there to train
- 25:11with her and then I would
- 25:13do like mayhem stuff when I
- 25:15was on my own and that just
- 25:17got too it was like too
- 25:19much and too complicated
- 25:20trying to like oh well we
- 25:20did wall balls yesterday
- 25:22and mayhem wants wall balls
- 25:23today like how do we want
- 25:24to scale that or like when
- 25:26I would go train with her
- 25:26it's like I already did
- 25:27that yesterday so I need to like
- 25:29figure out something different.
- 25:31So I decided like to switch
- 25:34to HWPO for this year.
- 25:37Um, it's kind of like,
- 25:39it's kind of bittersweet.
- 25:40Cause like, it's cool.
- 25:41Like it's a good,
- 25:41it's a cool change to be a
- 25:43part of like a different
- 25:44training camp or a company,
- 25:45especially a younger one.
- 25:46That's like up and coming
- 25:48and mayhems like very well
- 25:49established and mayhem was great.
- 25:52Like couldn't have asked any
- 25:53more from them.
- 25:55Like they were awesome.
- 25:56When I went down there a few times, I did,
- 25:57they like,
- 25:59were nothing but like super
- 26:00kind and polite welcoming
- 26:03so it was like in I
- 26:04followed like rich was one
- 26:06of the reasons I got into
- 26:07cross like wanted to
- 26:08compete in crossfit and
- 26:10like so mayhem's always
- 26:11kind of been a part of like
- 26:12my crossfit like journey
- 26:14like just following what
- 26:16they do and then competing
- 26:18under them so it was like
- 26:19it was kind of hard to like
- 26:22decide to kind of leave
- 26:23mayhem and go to somewhere else
- 26:28So that brings up another question for me.
- 26:32How much different are the programmings?
- 26:35They're really, like, not a ton different.
- 26:38I mean, there's, like,
- 26:39there's small things here and there.
- 26:42Like,
- 26:42and there's things I liked about
- 26:46Mayhem more.
- 26:46There's things I liked about HAPO more.
- 26:49I think it's completely just
- 26:50personal preference.
- 26:51And I've heard athletes say this before.
- 26:53Like, the training program you do really,
- 26:55I mean, it matters and it doesn't matter.
- 26:58I mean, if you don't put in the work,
- 26:59you're not going to make it.
- 27:01It's like, if you work hard, like,
- 27:03you can make it.
- 27:03It doesn't really matter exactly.
- 27:06which program you do.
- 27:07Like there's people who have
- 27:07made it to the games
- 27:08multiple years in a row.
- 27:10And in the favor,
- 27:11like go to the games five times in a row,
- 27:13they might be with three
- 27:14different training programs
- 27:15in those five years.
- 27:16Like it matters, but also kind of doesn't,
- 27:19it's kind of just whatever you, you like.
- 27:21And it just fit for me to do it.
- 27:22It just made sense and fit
- 27:24for me to do HWPO because
- 27:27like it was what it did
- 27:28just made everything
- 27:29consistent with training with Amanda.
- 27:32Yeah.
- 27:32My, my old gym,
- 27:34we used to do comp train and it, for me,
- 27:37it just felt like less fun.
- 27:41Like it was,
- 27:43it was designed for a
- 27:44competitor and I'm not,
- 27:45I'm there to get fit in an
- 27:47hour and go home.
- 27:49Right.
- 27:49And a ton of like dumbbell work.
- 27:51Yeah.
- 27:53Now that I'm at Polaris with Christie,
- 27:57like theirs is all interval
- 27:58work and I could not love it more.
- 28:01Yeah.
- 28:03Yeah.
- 28:04I mean, different pro it's always like,
- 28:06it is completely personal preference.
- 28:09Like some people just love
- 28:10one type of training more than the other.
- 28:12Like my affiliate cadre, they,
- 28:15they're a mayhem affiliate.
- 28:16Like they do mayhem class
- 28:18workouts and they're fun workouts.
- 28:20The coach, like I,
- 28:21it's definitely working.
- 28:22Like people are getting fit.
- 28:25So it,
- 28:26Yeah, my old gym switched to Mayhem.
- 28:30And some of my friends from
- 28:33there are still co-hosts on
- 28:34different shows I have here.
- 28:36So I get a flavor of it,
- 28:38and it seems great.
- 28:38Yeah, they're super good.
- 28:42Even for the coaches,
- 28:44they give notes and all
- 28:45this stuff on how to help
- 28:47run the class or the goals
- 28:48or stimulus or scaling options.
- 28:51So they definitely know what
- 28:51they're doing for
- 28:53programming for classes and stuff.
- 28:57So you go to Cadre.
- 28:59Mike Richardson's there, right?
- 29:01Yeah.
- 29:01And Mike Richards is actually,
- 29:03he's my lieutenant at the
- 29:05fire department too.
- 29:07That was where I was going.
- 29:09Yeah.
- 29:10He is a CrossFit floor announcer.
- 29:12For people who don't know,
- 29:13one of the most famous
- 29:14voices you'll hear at
- 29:17semifinals in the games, walking around,
- 29:19doing his thing.
- 29:20And he is a firefighter in Ohio here.
- 29:24And so he's your lieutenant.
- 29:26Yeah, he's my lieutenant,
- 29:26so he's technically my boss.
- 29:28He's in charge of me.
- 29:30Did you know him before
- 29:33going into the fire department?
- 29:34Oh, yeah.
- 29:35I've known him since like
- 29:382015 when I first joined Cadre.
- 29:40So I've known him for a really long time.
- 29:42Never thought I'd be working
- 29:43for him or with him.
- 29:45But, yeah, now I am.
- 29:46So it's actually kind of cool.
- 29:47And actually,
- 29:48someone else that's on my
- 29:49shift is Joe Weigel.
- 29:52He went to the games in 2011.
- 29:55Him and his wife were on the
- 29:56team that got second in 2012.
- 29:58He went to regionals in like
- 30:002013 and 2014.
- 30:02And then he was kind of like
- 30:04doing his own thing.
- 30:04But yeah, he's also on my shift.
- 30:07Oh, wow.
- 30:08So is it possible that Mike
- 30:11calls your action in Knoxville?
- 30:15Yeah, I think he is doing syndicate.
- 30:19So your boss could be the
- 30:20one on the floor calling you
- 30:24yeah action going up is a
- 30:26possibility it's kind of
- 30:30cool I've asked him I was
- 30:31like is that like a
- 30:31conflict of interest like
- 30:33is that bad but he's like
- 30:38it doesn't it doesn't
- 30:40affect the outcome right
- 30:41yeah it doesn't unless he's
- 30:43telling you like unless
- 30:44he's yelling cam pick it up
- 30:46let's go yeah in front of
- 30:48everybody yeah yeah
- 30:51No, he hasn't.
- 30:52Yeah, he hasn't told me any.
- 30:53I don't even know if he
- 30:54knows anything about the
- 30:55events or anything, but yeah,
- 30:58he said he won't reveal anything.
- 31:02Yeah.
- 31:03Yeah, he's a really good dude.
- 31:05One of my favorite people to
- 31:08see when I'm out on the road.
- 31:11Yeah,
- 31:12he's a fun guy to be around for 24 hours.
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:17Is he hard on the group or
- 31:18is he pretty supportive?
- 31:20He's pretty supportive.
- 31:21I mean, everyone on my shift,
- 31:23we kind of tend to know
- 31:25what we need to do and we
- 31:26all get it done.
- 31:27Like he doesn't have to like
- 31:30yell at us or anything all that much.
- 31:32So you said going into this year,
- 31:36you didn't have like high
- 31:37expectations of semis.
- 31:38Then you saw the workouts and you're like,
- 31:40oh, shoot.
- 31:41Good for me.
- 31:43Did that change your perspective?
- 31:45And do you have a goal?
- 31:46Yeah,
- 31:47it definitely did in like maybe not a
- 31:49great way because now I put a ton of more,
- 31:51a lot more.
- 31:51We were just talking with
- 31:53Amanda about this earlier today.
- 31:56But it's like I have way
- 31:57more stress now than I thought.
- 31:58I've almost like more stress
- 32:00this year than last year
- 32:02because I know that like
- 32:04I can, I have a, like,
- 32:06I have a pretty good shot
- 32:07and these workouts are like
- 32:08very good for me,
- 32:09which like last year I knew
- 32:10the workouts were going to be,
- 32:11so thought I had a shop.
- 32:12I knew the workouts are going to be rough.
- 32:14And then this year I'm like, well,
- 32:16damn it.
- 32:18Like I kind of didn't want
- 32:20to have like a ton of
- 32:20pressure and now I do.
- 32:23Yeah.
- 32:24That's crazy.
- 32:24Yeah.
- 32:27I definitely think I have a
- 32:28shot this year.
- 32:30Well, Cam, as always, man,
- 32:32it's such a treat catching
- 32:33up with you every year.
- 32:34Yeah.
- 32:35Glad to hear everything's
- 32:37going well in your personal life,
- 32:41and you're still killing it
- 32:42out there on the competition floor.
- 32:44Thank you.
- 32:44Appreciate it.
- 32:46An old guy is asking this question,
- 32:48and you probably get the reference,
- 32:50but any relation to Sonny Crockett?
- 32:53No.
- 32:54I've heard that multiple times,
- 32:56either that or Davey Crockett.
- 32:59Yeah, I'd take Sonny over Davey.
- 33:01Yeah, I mean, people call me Davey.
- 33:03I didn't hear Sonny until, like,
- 33:05I think until I joined the Army,
- 33:07but pretty much my whole life,
- 33:08people called me Davey.
- 33:11Yeah.
- 33:13Sonny got to drive the Ferrari.
- 33:14Yeah, that's pretty cool.
- 33:16Davey was in a coonskin hat
- 33:19and climbing in the mountains.
- 33:21Yeah, he did some cool stuff, though.
- 33:23Yeah.
- 33:24As Corey says,
- 33:25he was the king of the wild frontier.
- 33:26Yeah, that's pretty cool.
- 33:29so um oh man old man humor
