- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia mea podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Theater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time.
- 0:29Speaker 2: That's noon o'clock for our friends in Mitchell, South Dakota.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Happy opening week of Pheasant season to everyone there. On Thursday,
- 0:36Speaker 2: October twenty third, and we're live for Meet Theater HQ
- 0:39Speaker 2: and Bozeman. I'm your host, Spencer, joined today by Randall
- 0:42Speaker 2: and Corey. On today's show, we'll interview Josh Humbert, a
- 0:46Speaker 2: pearl farmer in one of the world's most remote places.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Then we have a white Tail Rot report from Mark Kenyon,
- 0:52Speaker 2: followed by some top three lists, and finally we'll interview
- 0:56Speaker 2: Michael Burton about using dating apps to find phishing spots.
- 1:00Speaker 2: But first we want to remind you that the Blood
- 1:02Speaker 2: Trails podcast drops on October thirtieth on its own feed
- 1:06Speaker 2: that's simply called Blood Trails. This is a new investigative
- 1:09Speaker 2: podcast for Meat Eater, hosted by journalists Jordan Sillers. Each
- 1:14Speaker 2: episode digs into true crime stories from the world of
- 1:16Speaker 2: hunting and fishing, cases where the woods and the water
- 1:20Speaker 2: became the backdrop for violence and mystery from missing hunters
- 1:23Speaker 2: deep in public land, to poachers turned killers, and fishing
- 1:27Speaker 2: trips gone fatally wrong. Blood Trails uncovers the moments when
- 1:31Speaker 2: outdoor life collides with homicide. Each story features original reporting,
- 1:35Speaker 2: expert insight from detectives, and first hand accounts from the
- 1:39Speaker 2: people who were actually there. The trailer is out right now.
- 1:42Speaker 2: You can go watch it on the Meat Eater podcast
- 1:44Speaker 2: YouTube channel and again the first episode drops October thirtieth
- 1:48Speaker 2: on the Blood Trails podcast feed. Very excited for that show. Also,
- 1:53Speaker 2: Randall has a plug for you now.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Yeah, I'd like to direct everyone's attention to the Is
- 1:59Speaker 3: it on the main channel.
- 2:01Speaker 4: It's as live as we are.
- 2:02Speaker 3: On the main Meat Eater YouTube channel, there's a new
- 2:05Speaker 3: video called the Great Buffalo Bred Experiment. And this is
- 2:09Speaker 3: sort of a high concept. It's high concept. Weed was involved, No, no,
- 2:16Speaker 3: just just it's elevated content. It's for a sophisticated, discerning viewership. Essentially,
- 2:25Speaker 3: when we were researching both the Mountain Men audiobook and
- 2:28Speaker 3: the Hide Hunters audiobook now available for purchase shameless plug,
- 2:33Speaker 3: we kept running into descriptions, and you run into descriptions
- 2:36Speaker 3: of this substance in any sort of writing about the
- 2:39Speaker 3: great Planes in the early nineteenth century a substance called
- 2:43Speaker 3: DePuy or how you spell that dee p u I
- 2:50Speaker 3: l l e s, And you get these very vivid
- 2:56Speaker 3: descriptions of it, and essentially it's the cap of fat
- 2:59Speaker 3: from a buffalo shoulder, and they prepare it by frying
- 3:03Speaker 3: it and then smoking it for a day, and they
- 3:07Speaker 3: repeatedly say that it's a substitute for bread. So you're
- 3:12Speaker 3: eating some meat, you eat this as your bread. And
- 3:15Speaker 3: in fact, we have one account where he says it's
- 3:17Speaker 3: superior to any bread that's ever been made. So Steve
- 3:20Speaker 3: and I made this and subjected some folks in the
- 3:23Speaker 3: office to a blind taste test to decide once and
- 3:27Speaker 3: for all whether this is in fact superior to any
- 3:30Speaker 3: bread that's ever been made. So this video on the
- 3:33Speaker 3: YouTube channel now is called the Great Buffalo Bread Experiment.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And we found we got a buffalo from our friends
- 3:42Speaker 3: at Northbridge or Bison, and we cut off the requisite
- 3:47Speaker 3: chunks of fat and we followed the instructions to a
- 3:50Speaker 3: tee and you can see the results of that on
- 3:52Speaker 3: YouTube now.
- 3:53Speaker 5: So back in the day, they smoked these caps of
- 3:56Speaker 5: fat in a Dynama teepee.
- 3:59Speaker 3: They used a a tpe an actual buffalo of skin
- 4:03Speaker 3: buffalo hide t pee.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I wondering if if there is a subtle hint to
- 4:07Speaker 5: smoke nylon or not.
- 4:09Speaker 3: No, No, I don't think that was the problem.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Not to give too elevated content, only cool interesting piece.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean experimental, experimental culinary scene.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Yeah, Caleb's asking Randall, if you have any wine and
- 4:22Speaker 4: cheese recommendation to pair with this elevated content.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Maybe some depuya, I would say a tall boy of
- 4:32Speaker 3: Mickey's Mickey's Malt liquor, Yes, and some string cheese. That's
- 4:40Speaker 3: what I got. Cheese cheese whiz, Actually, cheers whiz. I
- 4:44Speaker 3: used quite a bit of that. Try to get my
- 4:45Speaker 3: dogs to take a shower with me the other day.
- 4:49Speaker 2: We don't need any more.
- 4:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 4:50Speaker 2: On that, well, we'll.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Get some of that in our next segment here. Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 2: So that video is live on YouTube right now and
- 4:56Speaker 2: Blood Trails will be available next week. Alright, fellas we've
- 5:00Speaker 2: been in the field lately, let's do some hunt recaps.
- 5:03Speaker 2: This would make Yanni real happy. Random what you've been
- 5:05Speaker 2: up to.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Well, last weekend, my wife Sydney and I went antelope
- 5:11Speaker 3: hunting out in eastern Montana. We did not have any
- 5:13Speaker 3: antelope tags last year, so we were excited to get
- 5:15Speaker 3: out there because it is our favorite wild game to eat,
- 5:20Speaker 3: and so I feel like that's a hot take. I
- 5:24Speaker 3: feel like the more people you talk to, I feel
- 5:27Speaker 3: like it's more common than you'd think. Okay, just a
- 5:30Speaker 3: just an antelope steak, super rare. I love it. But
- 5:35Speaker 3: Sydney shot this buck. We had a slow day the
- 5:38Speaker 3: first day it was super cold and windy and didn't
- 5:40Speaker 3: see a lot of antelope on public land, and then
- 5:43Speaker 3: we pulled into a spot the next morning. Sydney glassed
- 5:48Speaker 3: this buck from the truck and I ranged it with
- 5:53Speaker 3: my range finder and with the sig buyos and you
- 5:57Speaker 3: can drop a pin on where you range. So we
- 6:00Speaker 3: dropped a pin on him about thirteen hundred yards out
- 6:03Speaker 3: and then hopped into this draw and kind of circled
- 6:06Speaker 3: all the way around and got up on the little
- 6:09Speaker 3: knob that he was on and couldn't see him, and
- 6:12Speaker 3: they had all bedded down, So we crawled around on
- 6:15Speaker 3: our hands and knees for probably half an hour within
- 6:18Speaker 3: two hundred yards of these antelopes. Finally she spotted him,
- 6:23Speaker 3: just his horns behind the sage brush, and I was like,
- 6:27Speaker 3: I had to tell I had to ask her, like
- 6:29Speaker 3: pointed out to me, pointed out to me because I
- 6:31Speaker 3: couldn't see him, and then eventually I got him. We
- 6:33Speaker 3: crawled around until we sort of had an angle and
- 6:36Speaker 3: then waited for them to stand up, and she ended
- 6:39Speaker 3: up shooting that antelope at like one hundred yards, which
- 6:42Speaker 3: is super cool. And that was she basically did everything
- 6:46Speaker 3: on that hunt, like she spotted the animal, she once
- 6:49Speaker 3: we got in on it, she found him again, she
- 6:52Speaker 3: turned him up, and then I was like, do you
- 6:55Speaker 3: want me to try to get him to stand up?
- 6:56Speaker 3: You know, I'll clap my hands or something, and she's like, no,
- 6:59Speaker 3: we'll wait, We'll wait, and then she stood up. So
- 7:02Speaker 3: other than sort of the navigating on ONEX, she did everything,
- 7:05Speaker 3: which is really cool. Hell yeah, and yeah, that's the dogs.
- 7:08Speaker 3: The dogs were waiting in the truck and onto the
- 7:13Speaker 3: next photo, and then I shot this one. Later that day,
- 7:18Speaker 3: we spotted a buck real far away that looked like
- 7:22Speaker 3: a dandy and then dropped into a little draw and
- 7:25Speaker 3: we ended up having to cross this muddy creek a
- 7:28Speaker 3: couple times, and eventually I said we're a mile and
- 7:31Speaker 3: a half away. Let's just get up on the flat
- 7:33Speaker 3: and book it and then drop back into the draw
- 7:35Speaker 3: so we don't have to cross this creek again. And
- 7:37Speaker 3: as we got up onto the flat, there's kind of
- 7:39Speaker 3: a little roll in this guy and some doze were
- 7:41Speaker 3: bedded there, and I figured a bird in hand is
- 7:45Speaker 3: whatever the saying is, So I shut this one. Yeah,
- 7:48Speaker 3: And we were close enough to the car that next
- 7:51Speaker 3: slide phill Sidney went and got the dogs while I
- 7:55Speaker 3: began the processing work. And you can see there on Rosie,
- 7:58Speaker 3: my most surprized hound, she's got a little bit of
- 8:02Speaker 3: antelope blood on her back because she likes to roll
- 8:05Speaker 3: in things. And so that gets me to the cheese
- 8:07Speaker 3: whiz that I was describing earlier in this episode. The
- 8:11Speaker 3: dogs all needed a pretty serious bath afterwards.
- 8:15Speaker 2: And uh and so you're about to see a picture
- 8:17Speaker 2: of you in the shower.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Nope, nope, nope, but you will see on the next
- 8:20Speaker 3: slide we this is That was our dinner when we
- 8:23Speaker 3: got back is beautiful. Two backstraps from one of the
- 8:28Speaker 3: antelope cal and Sam came over and we uh just
- 8:32Speaker 3: pan fried him and we made a sauce called Cumberland sauce,
- 8:35Speaker 3: which is like a classic mill It's like a classic
- 8:37Speaker 3: steak sauce. It's sort of a cranberry it's almost like
- 8:41Speaker 3: cranberry sauce, but it's like a drizzle glaze type thing.
- 8:44Speaker 3: And it was quite tasty. So yeah, it was a
- 8:49Speaker 3: great start to the fall season and getting ready for.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Some more here a good couple days of analopin. Fantastic
- 8:55Speaker 2: classic goat en counters.
- 8:56Speaker 3: Oh yeah. Oh, and then the highlight probably was we
- 8:59Speaker 3: were driving down a two track and bumped a little
- 9:03Speaker 3: covey of sage grouse. So they're probably about ten birds
- 9:07Speaker 3: that looked like, you know, kickballs with feathers.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And you still got that trivia question wrong yesterday? Or
- 9:12Speaker 2: were they not greater sage grouse?
- 9:14Speaker 3: No, they were. They were greater sage grouse.
- 9:17Speaker 2: I don't think I've ever seen one in person.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Oh they're unbelievad They're so big. Yeah, and they just
- 9:21Speaker 3: bumped up and went about forty yards away and put
- 9:24Speaker 3: down again. And then we sat there and took a
- 9:26Speaker 3: bunch of video of them and super cool. I've seen
- 9:29Speaker 3: a couple of them just you know, deer and antelope punting.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I don't think we got a conclusion to the cheese
- 9:34Speaker 2: whiz thing.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Well, it worked at first, but then they all got
- 9:38Speaker 3: they all got really mad when the water turned on.
- 9:42Speaker 2: What happened? You put cheese whiz like on the shower
- 9:45Speaker 2: door or what?
- 9:46Speaker 3: Yes, so we have like a walk in shower with
- 9:48Speaker 3: the glass door, and so I put a bunch of
- 9:51Speaker 3: cheese whiz on the floor and then pushed them towards it,
- 9:54Speaker 3: and they all attacked the cheese whiz and then I
- 9:56Speaker 3: turned the water. I shut the door, turned the water on.
- 9:59Speaker 3: But then cheese was isn't really soluble in water again,
- 10:02Speaker 3: so there was actually quite a bit of grout cleaning
- 10:05Speaker 3: that was required afterwards. I don't recommend it. I'm working
- 10:08Speaker 3: on a new solution, but we don't bave our dogs regularly,
- 10:11Speaker 3: so I don't have that PROGRAMM. Try whipped cream. That's
- 10:14Speaker 3: a new one. It's easy to go one. Yeah right,
- 10:18Speaker 3: that's what.
- 10:18Speaker 2: I got in a up country That up to you, man.
- 10:21Speaker 5: I've had a very exciting fall, but exciting yet unsuccessful
- 10:25Speaker 5: so far. Been chasing Elk all September and a little
- 10:29Speaker 5: bit into October. A lot of close encounters, trying to
- 10:32Speaker 5: get a few buddies into Elk but haven't flung an
- 10:35Speaker 5: arrow and archery seasons coming gone rifle O Big Game
- 10:40Speaker 5: General Rifle opens this Saturday, so I'm excited.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Days from now, give her hell with a rifle. You're
- 10:44Speaker 2: gonna be out there.
- 10:45Speaker 5: Oh yeah, okay, yep, got a few trips planned. Hopefully
- 10:48Speaker 5: I don't need to even go back out later in
- 10:50Speaker 5: the season. I just have a deer and an elk
- 10:51Speaker 5: tag in my pocket. So I haven't drawn anne open
- 10:54Speaker 5: a few years.
- 10:55Speaker 3: That's because you're not putting in for the right units.
- 10:58Speaker 2: What are the odds to kill kill an elk this weekend?
- 11:01Speaker 3: This week? This weekend?
- 11:03Speaker 5: Pretty low because everybody, but it's more like four percent. Yeah,
- 11:08Speaker 5: but as the season drags on and it gets colder
- 11:10Speaker 5: and snow ear ask me in a couple of weeks, have.
- 11:12Speaker 2: You ever killed one on a rifle opener? Yes?
- 11:15Speaker 5: Okay, fact my very first elk when I was thirty. Nice,
- 11:19Speaker 5: just in the right place at the right time, caught him.
- 11:21Speaker 5: He was running away from other people.
- 11:24Speaker 3: That is the advantage of opener. They're where they were
- 11:28Speaker 3: for opening morning, they're where they were the past week,
- 11:31Speaker 3: and then they're just all over the place running somewhere else.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Uh.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Last week I was in Idaho for a bit. I
- 11:39Speaker 2: had a deer tag there for their opener. I had
- 11:42Speaker 2: red reports going into the hunt that the unit I
- 11:44Speaker 2: was going to be in had EHD reports. I'd seen
- 11:48Speaker 2: things on Facebook about that part of the state having EHD.
- 11:52Speaker 2: But it's like at that point you have the tag,
- 11:54Speaker 2: there's no like refunding the tag and IO like some
- 11:57Speaker 2: other states have when when this sort of thing happened.
- 11:59Speaker 2: So I was committed him going, and I went, and
- 12:02Speaker 2: it was worse than I could have possibly imagined. Last
- 12:05Speaker 2: year I had the same hunt and I saw I
- 12:07Speaker 2: think more deer on that hunt than my other, like
- 12:11Speaker 2: four hunts combined. It was just like that plentiful with
- 12:15Speaker 2: white tails. This year on opening day I saw zero
- 12:18Speaker 2: live deer and found five dead ones. We've got a
- 12:20Speaker 2: picture of one of them here, including two bucks that
- 12:24Speaker 2: would have been no doubt shooters. This buck, he almost
- 12:27Speaker 2: made it. He got out of velvet, meaning he survived
- 12:30Speaker 2: into September. The season opened in October there, but he
- 12:35Speaker 2: died of EHD at some point in that month prior
- 12:39Speaker 2: and then I found it. You know, a couple dos.
- 12:41Speaker 2: This is like a textbook scene of EHD when a
- 12:45Speaker 2: deer has EHD, they only make it. I think it's
- 12:47Speaker 2: like one or two days. In those final hours, they
- 12:50Speaker 2: have a very high fever where they are just boiling
- 12:53Speaker 2: from the inside, so they seek out water, you know,
- 12:56Speaker 2: hoping to feel better. And so you'll find deer that
- 12:59Speaker 2: just die near water or in water. He were two
- 13:01Speaker 2: does about ten yards apart that had died in a pond,
- 13:05Speaker 2: and then I found another buck that would have been
- 13:07Speaker 2: a shooter as well. This guy did not make it
- 13:09Speaker 2: out of velvet though, so he died probably sometime in August.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Because his antlers were fully formed. He didn't have like
- 13:17Speaker 2: the hot dog points that those deer will have in
- 13:20Speaker 2: you know, June and July, so he seemed to almost
- 13:23Speaker 2: make it as well. But it was just a real bummer.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I did have a consolation prize turkey you can kill
- 13:28Speaker 2: a hen there in the fall, and I have zero
- 13:31Speaker 2: turkey in the freezer and was not going to pass
- 13:33Speaker 2: up a hen, so I shotgun to that thing not
- 13:36Speaker 2: too far from camp. And then when I got home,
- 13:38Speaker 2: I also had an analope tag in eastern Montana. Drove
- 13:41Speaker 2: out there and killed a buck and so he is
- 13:45Speaker 2: in my freezer as well. That is just what I've
- 13:48Speaker 2: been referring to as a copy and paste antelope. That's
- 13:52Speaker 2: the kind of buck that's just like copy and pasted
- 13:55Speaker 2: all over the prairie in analope country. He looks like
- 13:58Speaker 2: every antalope.
- 13:59Speaker 3: I called that an antelope that looks like an analope.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Yes, which is I think the three of us could
- 14:05Speaker 2: bring all of our analyopes skulls in here and mix
- 14:07Speaker 2: them up and try to, you know, find out who's
- 14:09Speaker 2: is who's and we'd we'd be as successful as we
- 14:12Speaker 2: would be blind, is my guess, because that's just like,
- 14:15Speaker 2: that's what an antelope buck looks like.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Yep.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Still fun to hunt though, and especially coming out of
- 14:21Speaker 2: my Idaho hunt where I saw zero deer on opening day.
- 14:24Speaker 2: When you have an analope tag, you're like just guaranteed
- 14:27Speaker 2: to see analog It's so refreshing. They're like, you know
- 14:30Speaker 2: you're going to see your target.
- 14:32Speaker 3: It's a fun hunt, and you can hunt all day.
- 14:34Speaker 3: You're not like waking up at the crack of dawn.
- 14:37Speaker 3: So what a bummer in Idaho?
- 14:39Speaker 6: Though, I hear.
- 14:40Speaker 2: There's a bummer. So there's like a few silver linings
- 14:43Speaker 2: they quickly recover. It's not like CWD, where once you
- 14:46Speaker 2: have it, you just have it. In most cases, those
- 14:48Speaker 2: herds can can bounce back in two to three years.
- 14:52Speaker 2: They also develop an immunity to EHD that lasts what
- 14:55Speaker 2: I've read is from like seven to ten years, so
- 14:58Speaker 2: that that unit will be okay, the state will be fine.
- 15:01Speaker 2: But I feel bad for obviously the deer, the hunters
- 15:03Speaker 2: who are local to there, and then the biologists who
- 15:05Speaker 2: have to deal with the deer and the hunters who
- 15:08Speaker 2: are upset about the whole situation. It is just like
- 15:10Speaker 2: no win.
- 15:10Speaker 5: So I believe there's a similar situation up in north
- 15:13Speaker 5: central Montana happening.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and Ohio has got EHD really bad right now. Yeah.
- 15:17Speaker 2: We had an Ohio or an EHD report from Kip
- 15:20Speaker 2: Adams a few weeks ago, and I think Ohio was
- 15:22Speaker 2: the low light of the whole report because they are
- 15:25Speaker 2: dominating the rest of the country right now as far
- 15:28Speaker 2: as EHD numbers go. All right, let's get on the
- 15:31Speaker 2: show and do our first interview.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Joining us on the line first is pearl farmer Josh Humbert.
- 15:36Speaker 3: He is the owner of Kamoka Pearl, which is located
- 15:38Speaker 3: in one of the most remote places on Earth, Josh,
- 15:41Speaker 3: Welcome to the show.
- 15:43Speaker 6: Hey, guys, thank you for having me. It's exciting to
- 15:46Speaker 6: be here.
- 15:47Speaker 3: And we appreciate you waking up so early. Can you
- 15:50Speaker 3: tell us where you're speaking to us from today?
- 15:55Speaker 7: So I'm actually speaking to you from my deck in
- 15:59Speaker 7: in Tihiti. We have a home in uh in the
- 16:02Speaker 7: town of Chopo where the Olympics were. I was supposed
- 16:05Speaker 7: to be at the farm for this, but I've come
- 16:08Speaker 7: to Tahiti a little bit early, have some tete to do.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Uh and uh. I got bit by a shark last year.
- 16:17Speaker 7: I'm still doing some of the some of the rehab stuff,
- 16:19Speaker 7: but I also had had pearls to bring and the
- 16:24Speaker 7: pearls I'm working on right now. So yeah, I just
- 16:28Speaker 7: kind of got got my hands full. And uh and
- 16:30Speaker 7: uh and so here I am. I'm not I'm not
- 16:33Speaker 7: on on the the aphol which is called a Hey
- 16:37Speaker 7: and it's it's in the very northern, uh, the very
- 16:41Speaker 7: northwest corner of the swims.
- 16:44Speaker 6: So uh. Yeah, it's kind of the last the last
- 16:49Speaker 6: apol going north.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Gotcha, And so what what is your family's connection to
- 16:54Speaker 3: this place? How did you end up in that part
- 16:55Speaker 3: of the world.
- 16:58Speaker 7: So we arrived down sailboat when I was two years old.
- 17:03Speaker 7: My parents built the sailboat in uh in the the
- 17:07Speaker 7: backyard of the house they were renting in Torrens, California.
- 17:11Speaker 7: My dad's French, my mom's American. And so they built
- 17:15Speaker 7: this this boat out of basically like whatever they could find,
- 17:20Speaker 7: you know that it was basically made of chicken wire
- 17:23Speaker 7: and rebar and u and concrete and uh. They built
- 17:28Speaker 7: this boat on complete shustring budget. They didn't have any
- 17:32Speaker 7: money at all. My dad actually pulled the coordinates from
- 17:36Speaker 7: a wooden boat magazine.
- 17:37Speaker 6: I don't know if anyone's familiar, but.
- 17:40Speaker 7: It was just just numbers, you know, just numbers on
- 17:43Speaker 7: a page and and uh and he, like whatever, figured
- 17:47Speaker 7: it all out and and together they built this boat
- 17:49Speaker 7: and and sailed away with with myself and my brother
- 17:53Speaker 7: who's three years older than me, and and two cats,
- 17:56Speaker 7: two dogs, and and three hundred dollars basically wow, yeah
- 18:01Speaker 7: and uh. And so we sailed down to uh to Baja,
- 18:04Speaker 7: lived there for almost two years, and then from there
- 18:09Speaker 7: went down to French Polynesia with the intent of going
- 18:11Speaker 7: to Tihiti, but we stopped in on this this asoholist
- 18:15Speaker 7: on the way, and the locals took us in and
- 18:18Speaker 7: and really treat us like like family. And so we
- 18:23Speaker 7: kind of put roots down there, and my dad got
- 18:26Speaker 7: to the sailboat and turned it into a saline freezer
- 18:30Speaker 7: basically so that so that he could take the fish
- 18:33Speaker 7: that the locals would catch and uh.
- 18:38Speaker 4: Mm, should pop back in.
- 18:40Speaker 3: I say, christ for it, gotcha?
- 18:45Speaker 6: Basically, sorry, go ahead.
- 18:46Speaker 3: I was gonna say, for listeners who might not be
- 18:50Speaker 3: familiar with French Polynesia, can you talk about just how
- 18:53Speaker 3: remote we were, you know, like placed this on a
- 18:56Speaker 3: globe relatively speaking, and how remote you're Your atoll is from, say, Tahiti, So.
- 19:05Speaker 6: We're about two hundred miles north of Tahiti.
- 19:08Speaker 7: And uh, yeah, there we are. Cool, Okay, cool, you
- 19:12Speaker 7: pulled one of our videos.
- 19:15Speaker 6: Yeah, so it's very remote.
- 19:17Speaker 7: We're thirty five hundred miles from uh from the west coast.
- 19:21Speaker 6: Of the US.
- 19:24Speaker 7: Actually sailed there last year with my dad and uh yeah,
- 19:28Speaker 7: it took it took a month to get there. So yeah,
- 19:32Speaker 7: it's it's it's it's quite a ways out there now.
- 19:36Speaker 3: So you're you're in the pearl farming business. Can you
- 19:38Speaker 3: walk us through the basics of pearl farming. What does
- 19:42Speaker 3: the process actually look like?
- 19:45Speaker 7: So basically, you you have to collect your your oyster
- 19:48Speaker 7: when it's when it's still like at its planktonic stage.
- 19:53Speaker 6: Basically, you set out what we call.
- 19:55Speaker 7: Collectors at a certain time of year and they swim
- 19:57Speaker 7: and you know they start life as as swim in
- 19:59Speaker 7: large a and uh they they they seek out a
- 20:03Speaker 7: good place to to ah to to colonize and they
- 20:09Speaker 7: grow up there.
- 20:10Speaker 6: So once we once we do that.
- 20:12Speaker 7: The the oysters grow up basically and to a certain
- 20:16Speaker 7: size that it takes about almost three years to get
- 20:20Speaker 7: them to to uh, to the size of which you
- 20:22Speaker 7: can do what you see here in the video, which
- 20:24Speaker 7: is the the the implanting and the harvesting the first
- 20:28Speaker 7: peril takes about twelve months.
- 20:30Speaker 6: To the harvest. Wow, that's what you see there. So
- 20:34Speaker 6: it's it's it's quite a it's quite a process.
- 20:37Speaker 7: It's it's a kind of a labor of love. It's
- 20:40Speaker 7: it's a lot of work. It's it's a lot of physical,
- 20:42Speaker 7: physical labor.
- 20:44Speaker 6: But yeah, we we love it.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So who are your primary buyers? Are you selling to
- 20:49Speaker 3: to consumers directly or jewelers or collectors or what's the
- 20:54Speaker 3: structure of the the market there.
- 20:59Speaker 6: Well to people all around the world.
- 21:02Speaker 7: I mean, we we probably saw more in the in
- 21:04Speaker 7: the US than than anywhere m M, because that's kind
- 21:07Speaker 7: of what our marketing targets. But we literally sell pearls
- 21:11Speaker 7: to any country that's safe to.
- 21:14Speaker 6: Send stuff too.
- 21:17Speaker 7: So yeah, I mean the primary market would be the US,
- 21:20Speaker 7: but that's probably because you know, we we focus a
- 21:23Speaker 7: lot of our our ad spend on on on on
- 21:26Speaker 7: the US market.
- 21:27Speaker 6: Uh. You know, our our.
- 21:30Speaker 7: Videos are all all in English, and and that's definitely
- 21:34Speaker 7: like the market that that we focus on most.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Gotcha, I imagine that there's a sort of a romantic
- 21:41Speaker 3: notion of pearl farming in a tropical paradise here. But
- 21:45Speaker 3: what are the day to day challenges of your operation?
- 21:51Speaker 7: The probably our biggest challenge would be just keeping our
- 21:54Speaker 7: oysters safe. We have to keep them safe from from fish.
- 21:58Speaker 7: You can see in our in our videos, you'll see
- 22:00Speaker 7: the oysters hanging in these long baskets and basically the
- 22:05Speaker 7: trigger fish. They're kind of our our enemy number one.
- 22:08Speaker 7: They're they're they're really smart and I don't know if
- 22:11Speaker 7: you guys know what trigger fish are, but it's a
- 22:14Speaker 7: fish about about ten pounds or so, and it has
- 22:17Speaker 7: a job that's so powerful. I think the bite force
- 22:22Speaker 7: is like three hundred PSI. So they can, Yeah, they
- 22:25Speaker 7: can just rip through just by anything. And they can
- 22:29Speaker 7: break an oyster, which is pretty impressive because you can
- 22:31Speaker 7: take a hammer and it's hard to break an oyster.
- 22:33Speaker 7: Like they have so much integrity, like this way, Sorry,
- 22:42Speaker 7: we got some.
- 22:44Speaker 2: I thought I saw a wrist rocket. What are we
- 22:47Speaker 2: doing there?
- 22:47Speaker 6: What is happening?
- 22:50Speaker 7: There's there's roosters around, and I keep I keep some
- 22:56Speaker 7: some some like shit pearls on hand.
- 23:01Speaker 3: You might be the only man in the world that's
- 23:03Speaker 3: loading his wrist rocket with pearls. This is fantastic.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Yeah, for those listening, Josh just loaded a sling shot
- 23:11Speaker 2: and shot it during the interview at a rooster who
- 23:14Speaker 2: was encroaching on his audio.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Good on you, Josh, so yeah, sorry, go ahead, go ahead.
- 23:23Speaker 6: No.
- 23:23Speaker 7: I was just saying that there's too many of them
- 23:24Speaker 7: around and we need to do a little rooster call
- 23:27Speaker 7: and have some cocal event.
- 23:30Speaker 6: I don't know if you guys are oh, yeah, except not.
- 23:33Speaker 3: But yeah, so so as far as like protecting your oysters,
- 23:38Speaker 3: are you guys doing a lot of diving and and
- 23:41Speaker 3: and fishing or spearfishing. I mean, what's the what's that
- 23:44Speaker 3: look like?
- 23:46Speaker 6: So we we do do a lot of spearfishing.
- 23:49Speaker 7: That's basically how we feed ourselves. We you know, it's
- 23:54Speaker 7: it's remote and and we do get stuff on a
- 23:57Speaker 7: like a weekly or or every other week supply ship.
- 24:02Speaker 7: But we definitely we like to eat fish. You know,
- 24:04Speaker 7: we're we're a meat eaters, more fish than uh than
- 24:08Speaker 7: than land meat. But but yeah, we fished literally every
- 24:12Speaker 7: every single day. And yeah, we we we we uh
- 24:16Speaker 7: we usually go spearfishing. That that's kind of our our
- 24:18Speaker 7: go to and it's generally pretty safe. Like I said,
- 24:22Speaker 7: I got I got a bit last November, which I
- 24:26Speaker 7: don't recommend.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I was gonna ask about that. Was that Was
- 24:30Speaker 3: that a spear fishing encounter?
- 24:32Speaker 6: Yeah? Yeah, I was.
- 24:34Speaker 7: Uh, I was spearfishing the friends and uh the shark
- 24:37Speaker 7: came straight up on me and grabbed my my uh
- 24:40Speaker 7: my my calf and kind of like pulled me down
- 24:45Speaker 7: and I got uh. So we we we put which
- 24:49Speaker 7: we put two turn kits on it, but we put
- 24:51Speaker 7: the turn kets right on the peronnial nerve, which I
- 24:54Speaker 7: don't know if your audience knows not, but that that's
- 24:57Speaker 7: the big nerve that services your whole or leg and
- 25:01Speaker 7: it's one of the few places where you're not supposed
- 25:03Speaker 7: to put a tournique and uh and so my my
- 25:07Speaker 7: whole lower leg was offline for for about three months.
- 25:11Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I.
- 25:13Speaker 7: Wasn't sure if if I'd walk again. It was it
- 25:16Speaker 7: was all pretty uh, pretty scary. But I'm walking now
- 25:18Speaker 7: and I'm pretty good for the most part. I'm back
- 25:21Speaker 7: at about ninety percent. But but yeah, I sorted. I
- 25:25Speaker 7: did not mean to get derailed. We're talking about pearls. Yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 7: so it's just I mean, that's a spear vision. It's
- 25:33Speaker 7: part of our life and uh and it's it's what
- 25:35Speaker 7: we do. It's it's how we we we feed ourselves.
- 25:37Speaker 7: But as far as the oysters, they they they need
- 25:41Speaker 7: to be kept safe from the from the trigger fish,
- 25:43Speaker 7: from the the the the sea turtles and and the
- 25:48Speaker 7: big big leopard rays. And we do that by keeping
- 25:51Speaker 7: them in in uh in baskets. And we we've actually
- 25:55Speaker 7: had some really interesting developments with that h recently. So
- 26:00Speaker 7: for for years now, we we take our our fish
- 26:02Speaker 7: to to shallow water where where there's a sorry, we
- 26:05Speaker 7: take our oysters to shallow water where there's lots of fish,
- 26:08Speaker 7: and and the fish come around and clean clean all
- 26:13Speaker 7: the all the stuff that grows on them, And uh,
- 26:16Speaker 7: that's really cool because that's basically like it's it's a
- 26:19Speaker 7: it's a way to get the oysters clean and it's
- 26:21Speaker 7: also a way to support our local ecology. We've been
- 26:26Speaker 7: doing that for for thirty years now, and there's more fish,
- 26:29Speaker 7: more more life in our area than than anywhere in
- 26:32Speaker 7: the whole the whole appol and so that that's been
- 26:35Speaker 7: a real source of pride for us, just to see that,
- 26:39Speaker 7: like our work can actually be regenerative to the the
- 26:43Speaker 7: lagoon and ecology. But recently we've kind of taken that
- 26:47Speaker 7: to another level where we we keep our oysters in
- 26:52Speaker 7: zones that are relatively shallow and the.
- 26:58Speaker 6: We what we what everyone does, they close the basket
- 27:02Speaker 6: so that so the figger fists can't get in and
- 27:05Speaker 6: pull the oysters out. But what what we did.
- 27:08Speaker 7: We kind of kind of took a risk on it
- 27:11Speaker 7: about a year ago and we started opening the baskets
- 27:14Speaker 7: and just like attaching the first the first oyster was
- 27:17Speaker 7: a little bit deeper down in the basket and the
- 27:21Speaker 7: thinking is that if there was a little bit deeper down,
- 27:22Speaker 7: theer fists can be able to pull them out and
- 27:24Speaker 7: and and it worked. And so it's basically like cut
- 27:29Speaker 7: our our labor by about.
- 27:31Speaker 6: Fifty percent, which is a lot, you know significant.
- 27:36Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm sure a lot of your audience are farmers,
- 27:39Speaker 7: and I'm sure they could they could really appreciate what
- 27:42Speaker 7: that means. And it also increased our our productivity basically
- 27:48Speaker 7: the rate at which the oysters grow by about thirty percent,
- 27:53Speaker 7: which is massive. And so anyway, yeah, it's it's really exciting.
- 27:58Speaker 7: And we basically consider all this stuff open source, like
- 28:02Speaker 7: we we want other people to be doing this, like
- 28:05Speaker 7: we're you know, we we communicate on it through our
- 28:08Speaker 7: channel Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube.
- 28:13Speaker 6: And the whole you know.
- 28:15Speaker 7: The best thing that we can do is share what
- 28:17Speaker 7: we're doing with other people and the hope that that
- 28:19Speaker 7: other farmers do it too, because the more the more
- 28:22Speaker 7: farmers do this, the more the the doing ecology will prosper. Basically,
- 28:28Speaker 7: the the number one fish that that cleans our oysters
- 28:31Speaker 7: are parrotfish, and and so by supporting the parrotfish, you're
- 28:36Speaker 7: actually supporting, uh, the coral as well.
- 28:41Speaker 6: What parentfish do is they they.
- 28:43Speaker 7: Go around and they graze on I mean they you know,
- 28:47Speaker 7: they eat different things. But one thing that they do
- 28:50Speaker 7: is they they graze on on on the the algae
- 28:54Speaker 7: that grows on dead coral. So what that does is
- 28:57Speaker 7: that it enables the coral to keep growing. If if
- 29:00Speaker 7: the coral gets calinized by algae, it can't it can't,
- 29:03Speaker 7: it can't grow. So when the pearfish come by and
- 29:07Speaker 7: clean it up, then the the coral prosperous. Basically by
- 29:11Speaker 7: supporting the Yeah, by supporting the parfish, we're supporting the reef,
- 29:15Speaker 7: and the reef supports this whole other you know, there's
- 29:17Speaker 7: all these other downstream effects from it.
- 29:21Speaker 6: And basically like basically figured this out.
- 29:25Speaker 7: Like like I like to think in terms of permaculture,
- 29:30Speaker 7: you know that the first ten of permaculture is that
- 29:34Speaker 7: before you do anything, you you observe, you know, you watch,
- 29:37Speaker 7: and I just I had this moment years ago when
- 29:42Speaker 7: we were you know a lot of years ago. I've
- 29:45Speaker 7: been doing this for yeah, thirty thirty some years now,
- 29:49Speaker 7: but I had this moment where we were we brought
- 29:51Speaker 7: a bunch of oysters in, Uh, they were dirty to
- 29:54Speaker 7: the farm to the temporary platform that's there, and we're
- 29:58Speaker 7: you know, we hung all the way to in the morning,
- 30:00Speaker 7: and then throughout the morning we went through them and
- 30:03Speaker 7: cleaned them and and uh, you know.
- 30:05Speaker 6: It's really it's really labor intensive.
- 30:07Speaker 7: You're you're scraping all this stuff off the oyster and
- 30:10Speaker 7: you got like like stuff splattering in your face and
- 30:12Speaker 7: stuff some of the beaches and things, and it's.
- 30:15Speaker 6: Just it's it's not it's not fun work at all.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 7: And and then at noon, like we you know, we
- 30:21Speaker 7: stopped for lunch, and then we went back out and
- 30:24Speaker 7: we started working again.
- 30:25Speaker 6: And I went to go get.
- 30:26Speaker 7: A string and I pulled it out of the water,
- 30:27Speaker 7: and I'm like it's clean, you know, like and it
- 30:30Speaker 7: was something that that we'd noticed before.
- 30:32Speaker 6: But I just had this this epiphany that's like this.
- 30:35Speaker 7: Real the classic aha moment where I was like, wait
- 30:38Speaker 7: a minute, what are we doing, Like why are we
- 30:41Speaker 7: scraping these oysters when the fish are there and they're
- 30:44Speaker 7: they're ready and willing to do this work for us.
- 30:47Speaker 6: And so from then on we just kind.
- 30:49Speaker 7: Of went all in with with the whole concept of
- 30:52Speaker 7: fish cleaning, and we built out all these all these
- 30:55Speaker 7: structures underwater in shallow zones where there's lots of fish
- 31:00Speaker 7: that were like kind of like big like spider webs,
- 31:02Speaker 7: and we'd hang all the baskets from from from those
- 31:06Speaker 7: platforms and the fish would come around and and uh
- 31:08Speaker 7: and and clean them all up, and then we take
- 31:10Speaker 7: them back out to the.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Line like a couple of days later.
- 31:13Speaker 2: Cool stuff.
- 31:14Speaker 7: And then so now like we basically like took that
- 31:17Speaker 7: idea and then and then went further with it by
- 31:21Speaker 7: opening the baskets. And it sounds so stupid, like, oh,
- 31:24Speaker 7: just opened the baskets, but you know, like when when
- 31:26Speaker 7: you lose so much money from the from the predation
- 31:31Speaker 7: of the fish, you get really kind of shy of
- 31:34Speaker 7: of doing.
- 31:35Speaker 6: Things like that.
- 31:36Speaker 7: So sure, that's what we've been doing, and it's been
- 31:38Speaker 7: working really well, and I don't know, hopefully I'm not
- 31:40Speaker 7: I'm not not talking too much.
- 31:42Speaker 3: No, it's great, Josh. You mentioned earlier that you run
- 31:46Speaker 3: an Instagram and you do some some communication and outreach.
- 31:50Speaker 3: If folks want to learn more about Komocha Pearl and
- 31:53Speaker 3: your work, where can they find you?
- 31:56Speaker 6: Just Kumoka Pearl.
- 31:57Speaker 7: We're on all all socials and yeah, just look us
- 32:01Speaker 7: up anywhere. We my son and I monitor all the
- 32:07Speaker 7: all the socials. He does most of the posting and
- 32:10Speaker 7: I answer the comments and respond to questions and stuff,
- 32:13Speaker 7: and so.
- 32:14Speaker 6: We're you know, we're there.
- 32:15Speaker 7: We're very easy to find and so if people reach
- 32:18Speaker 7: out to us, most of the time we'll be able
- 32:21Speaker 7: to respond, unless we're in a place where we can't
- 32:24Speaker 7: do that, or like sometimes we have stuff that goes
- 32:26Speaker 7: viral and we just get inundated.
- 32:28Speaker 6: I'm sure you guys know what that's life.
- 32:30Speaker 3: Sure well, Josh, thank you for waking up early again
- 32:34Speaker 3: I know it's early there and joining us on the
- 32:36Speaker 3: show and sharing with folks about your world. We appreciate it.
- 32:40Speaker 3: Great to meet you.
- 32:41Speaker 2: Thanks, Josh.
- 32:42Speaker 6: Awesome. Nice to you guys. Thank you very much.
- 32:44Speaker 5: No, no, no, what was that?
- 32:47Speaker 2: That's how you say goodbye?
- 32:48Speaker 3: And to Heshian?
- 32:49Speaker 2: Did you know that? Or do you google it?
- 32:51Speaker 5: I had time to google it.
- 32:54Speaker 2: It's a great contribution to the show, Corey.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I'm sure.
- 32:56Speaker 2: I'm glad you thought of doing sharp Corey. I want
- 33:00Speaker 2: some of those those pearls around.
- 33:03Speaker 3: I just I want to see that. I just want
- 33:05Speaker 3: to see that place. Yeah, that sounds wild. It sounds beautiful.
- 33:11Speaker 2: All right. Next up, we have a rut report.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Hope we should be tail run Kim, It's already here.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Kenn's gonna tell you what should do.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Text you bye cause your weaping kids.
- 33:25Speaker 2: Goodbye. Don't decide to desert you. Here is Mark Kenyon
- 33:34Speaker 2: with your white tail update for this weekend. Take it away, Phil.
- 33:39Speaker 8: Hey, guys, Mark Kenyon here with Wired to Hunt, and
- 33:42Speaker 8: I'm coming at you with another one of our rut
- 33:44Speaker 8: reports here for October twenty third, and I'm reporting from
- 33:48Speaker 8: the windy, blustery and uh quickly cooling cornfields of southern Michigan.
- 33:55Speaker 8: What I'm experiencing here is something that many hunters across
- 33:58Speaker 8: the country are, which is this colt this moving across
- 34:01Speaker 8: the country. And that's good news for hunters because deer
- 34:04Speaker 8: are definitely on their feet. Getting a lot of reports
- 34:06Speaker 8: of even daylight activity from mature bucks right now. So
- 34:10Speaker 8: take advantage of this weather system if you can. I've
- 34:13Speaker 8: also been getting reports of a couple early doughs.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Coming into heat.
- 34:17Speaker 8: This is earlier than usual for most parts of the country.
- 34:20Speaker 8: I wouldn't expect that to be a trend, but it
- 34:22Speaker 8: is something to just keep an eye out. You know,
- 34:24Speaker 8: the rut is a bell curve, so there's a few
- 34:26Speaker 8: that are going to come into heat early, and then
- 34:28Speaker 8: most come in that mid November time period, and then
- 34:30Speaker 8: a few off in the back end too, so that's
- 34:32Speaker 8: all beginning to rise right now. Scraping activity is peaking
- 34:37Speaker 8: right now at this time of the year, so scrape's
- 34:39Speaker 8: gonna have more daylight activity than at almost any other
- 34:42Speaker 8: time of the year, So keep an eye on scrapes,
- 34:45Speaker 8: keep an eye out for that early dough that maybe
- 34:47Speaker 8: can get the bucks in your area really feeling ready,
- 34:49Speaker 8: and otherwise count on more daylight activity right now from
- 34:53Speaker 8: your local deer than maybe you've seen over the last
- 34:55Speaker 8: three weeks, but they will likely still be in their
- 34:58Speaker 8: home turf sticking relatively close to the patterns you've been
- 35:02Speaker 8: observing over the last few weeks. So it's a great
- 35:05Speaker 8: time to be in the woods. I wish you luck
- 35:07Speaker 8: and I will be back in two weeks for another
- 35:09Speaker 8: rut report.
- 35:10Speaker 3: That's a pretty good camo pattern for that corn feme.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Yeah, oh maybe that's walnut.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Either way, it looks good on your mind, Yeah, disappears.
- 35:19Speaker 2: Feeling inspired after Mark's little report there. I love this
- 35:22Speaker 2: time of year. Because it's like it is very good
- 35:25Speaker 2: hunting right now, but the best is still yet to come. Well,
- 35:27Speaker 2: so you've like got you've got weeks of really good
- 35:30Speaker 2: movement to look forward to you and it's like just
- 35:32Speaker 2: starting at this moment, that's just goosebumps just hearing you
- 35:35Speaker 2: say that. Yeah.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:37Speaker 2: For the best up to date whitetail movement information, go
- 35:39Speaker 2: listen to Rot Fresh on the Wired Hunt podcast feed.
- 35:42Speaker 2: New episodes drop every week and have rot reports from
- 35:45Speaker 2: hunters across the country. Also, Mark is really excited about
- 35:49Speaker 2: his newest episode of Wired Hunt. That's episode nine to
- 35:52Speaker 2: six three, featuring a deep dive into the lessons of
- 35:55Speaker 2: Roger Rothar. Mark calls him the influencer of today's white
- 36:00Speaker 2: tail influencers. Again, that's episode nine to sixty three on
- 36:04Speaker 2: the Wired hant feed.
- 36:05Speaker 5: And let's not forget about white Tail e edu every
- 36:08Speaker 5: Wednesday on the meteor Clips channel.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Nice Mark and Tony make those.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Mark Tony and what's coming on.
- 36:16Speaker 2: They're answering all the white tail questions you didn't know
- 36:19Speaker 2: you had and the ones you do have. All Right,
- 36:22Speaker 2: our next segment is top threes.
- 36:25Speaker 9: We're just hitting all the drops back to back, good
- 36:46Speaker 9: camera work Phil as well.
- 36:48Speaker 4: You know, yeah, yeah, we make do with what we
- 36:50Speaker 4: have in this room.
- 36:52Speaker 2: All right, this week we have all brought our own
- 36:54Speaker 2: top three lists. Corey, start us off. What are you
- 36:57Speaker 2: ranking today?
- 36:58Speaker 4: Okay?
- 36:59Speaker 5: I had a lot of help last evening with my
- 37:01Speaker 5: beautiful wife Sarah after a couple of glasses of wine.
- 37:04Speaker 3: So this one's for you, honey.
- 37:06Speaker 5: This is the top three hypocritical complaints hunters with families
- 37:11Speaker 5: make in the fall.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Okay, so that's very specific.
- 37:14Speaker 5: Let's think about those honeydewes or stuff your spouse may
- 37:17Speaker 5: ask you to do in the fall. All the while,
- 37:19Speaker 5: all you're thinking about is hunting. Sure, so number three
- 37:23Speaker 5: fall decorations that might annoy the crap out of some
- 37:28Speaker 5: You know, some spouses might go a little over the
- 37:31Speaker 5: top with fall decorations, but hunters are awfully hypocritical about it,
- 37:35Speaker 5: because boy, they go decorate trees with stands and ladders
- 37:39Speaker 5: and trail cameras. Gearing yourself up for your fall hunting season.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Yeah, kind of the same.
- 37:45Speaker 2: I just punt on Halloween and Thanksgiving and then we
- 37:49Speaker 2: just go all in on Christmas. Oh that's an easy
- 37:51Speaker 2: compromise for us.
- 37:52Speaker 3: I just recommend living someplace where no one trick or
- 37:55Speaker 3: treats at your house.
- 37:57Speaker 2: That's so easy though, Yeah, you just turn on the lights,
- 38:00Speaker 2: put a bowl of candy, have three dogs. Oh oh,
- 38:03Speaker 2: that's probably why.
- 38:04Speaker 3: You've moved on. Yeah.
- 38:06Speaker 5: Well, Number two consumerism in the fall. So who else
- 38:10Speaker 5: rolls their eyes when they hear any excitement about pumpkin spice, lattes,
- 38:15Speaker 5: flannel pajamas, scarms, holiday har Hallmark TV shows. Okay, but
- 38:20Speaker 5: we as hunters are fed the same outdoor gear commercials,
- 38:23Speaker 5: and we all could admit we buy unnecessary gear all
- 38:26Speaker 5: the time.
- 38:27Speaker 2: We watched silly videos about eating bison bread stuff like that.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Just consumed.
- 38:33Speaker 5: And number one, which I do have a photo for
- 38:36Speaker 5: fall family photos. They might get up in the way.
- 38:40Speaker 3: But oh I was wondering how this one fit in
- 38:42Speaker 3: US as.
- 38:42Speaker 5: Hunters were out there with their gripp and grins with
- 38:44Speaker 5: the boys.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Yeah, this is like, uh you know, probably eighty percent
- 38:48Speaker 2: of my camera roll is just used up between October
- 38:53Speaker 2: and December.
- 38:54Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a photo of Spencer's awesome bowl elk they
- 38:57Speaker 5: shot last year opening Day rifle see and with good
- 39:01Speaker 5: buddies of his including myself.
- 39:02Speaker 3: In the back.
- 39:04Speaker 5: Yeah, what a beautiful fall family portrait that way, it's right.
- 39:07Speaker 2: Imagine if it was you and your wife and kids there.
- 39:09Speaker 4: Imagine this is if it's for a boy band. Which
- 39:12Speaker 4: one of you would be the hot one and which
- 39:13Speaker 4: one of you would be the badass?
- 39:15Speaker 2: Oh we're all the hot badass.
- 39:17Speaker 3: I think the one that's totally washed out by the
- 39:19Speaker 3: sun would be the one that got kicked out of
- 39:21Speaker 3: the band. It's like a bad airbrush job.
- 39:24Speaker 2: That's Ben. Sorry, Ben, I've been booted from the band.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Day boy. This was a deep This is a deep
- 39:30Speaker 3: sort of top three. Yeah, very sophisticated.
- 39:32Speaker 2: I like. I like when we are specific and niche
- 39:36Speaker 2: for things.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Thanks y'all.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Well done, Corey. All right, I am ranking the top
- 39:41Speaker 2: three worst state game agency logos. If you listen to
- 39:45Speaker 2: this show, you'll know that I did the three best
- 39:48Speaker 2: a few months ago. Now I am going to do
- 39:50Speaker 2: the three worst. There are eleven states who flat out
- 39:53Speaker 2: have not tried with their logo. It'd be one thing
- 39:56Speaker 2: if it was bad design, but it's not even that
- 39:58Speaker 2: because these logos just simply have no design. It actually
- 40:02Speaker 2: made me angry looking at these because the outdoors are
- 40:04Speaker 2: so beautiful and esthetic and inspiring and that should be
- 40:08Speaker 2: represented in these logos, but it's not. They just simply
- 40:11Speaker 2: have no personality at all. So let's see the list here.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Number three. We start with number three, Phil.
- 40:17Speaker 4: I just want to make sure because it's kind of
- 40:19Speaker 4: confusing because we usually when we have an order in
- 40:21Speaker 4: the slideshow, you label it one, two, three, But for
- 40:23Speaker 4: top threes you want to start with three.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Let's start with three.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Tell me the state and make sure a guy got
- 40:28Speaker 4: the right one.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Number three is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
- 40:34Speaker 4: I'm just trying to clarify things. YEA, so angry? Was
- 40:37Speaker 4: that rude?
- 40:37Speaker 1: Of Nope?
- 40:38Speaker 2: Nope, No, Wisconsin's logo is not only really bad, but
- 40:42Speaker 2: it's really weird. And it's not weird in a good way.
- 40:45Speaker 2: It's got black land with blue water clouds that don't
- 40:49Speaker 2: really make sense. Then it's got trees that are identical
- 40:52Speaker 2: to your mouse cursor, and within those trees there's a
- 40:55Speaker 2: giant red w which is the only thing that's even
- 40:58Speaker 2: remotely Wisconsin about this logo. Wisconsin has the sixth most anglers,
- 41:03Speaker 2: the fifth most hunters, and no one is more proud
- 41:06Speaker 2: of their big giant bucks. But you wouldn't know any
- 41:08Speaker 2: of that by looking at this dreadful logo. Uh, they
- 41:11Speaker 2: deserve something better than this, which when I looked at this,
- 41:15Speaker 2: it looks like a thumbnail for a Super Mario level.
- 41:18Speaker 2: To me, that's what I see.
- 41:20Speaker 3: I mean, it's not at all reflective of the Midwestern
- 41:24Speaker 3: sensibility that I would expect from the Wisconsin DNR.
- 41:26Speaker 2: No.
- 41:27Speaker 3: You know, I feel like I feel like Wisconsin is
- 41:29Speaker 3: a state I so associate with some sort of traditional values,
- 41:34Speaker 3: you know, just the Aldo Leopold right, like what are
- 41:37Speaker 3: we doing here?
- 41:38Speaker 2: Yeah? They just they have so much to work with
- 41:41Speaker 2: and they have used none of it. And the giant
- 41:45Speaker 2: red w that's like even more Mario adjacent. It looks
- 41:49Speaker 2: like a Warrio logo. To me, I just don't get
- 41:52Speaker 2: what Wisconsin was doing my game boy.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Yeah, oh no, Mario, thank you all right.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Number two is the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Uh,
- 42:05Speaker 2: this logo looks like the designer waited until ten minutes
- 42:08Speaker 2: before the deadline to even start because they couldn't have
- 42:11Speaker 2: possibly put in any less effort. It's just text that
- 42:15Speaker 2: says Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks in Times New
- 42:18Speaker 2: Roman or something that looks like times New Roman. And
- 42:21Speaker 2: then they have some stars in their state motto. What's
- 42:24Speaker 2: that state motto?
- 42:25Speaker 3: Say? Phil Ad per aspera okay to the stars, from
- 42:29Speaker 3: the mud to the stars through hardships.
- 42:31Speaker 2: Very good, I think it can be.
- 42:33Speaker 3: Well, yeah, that's the literal Latin. And it's also the
- 42:37Speaker 3: tagline of pall Mall cigarettes.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Really you smoke those?
- 42:42Speaker 3: I've smoked a couple of pall Mall cigarettes, yes, And
- 42:45Speaker 3: I always was tickled when I looked at a pack
- 42:47Speaker 3: of pall Mall.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Take you to the Star?
- 42:51Speaker 2: That is great. Did it have the translation on the
- 42:56Speaker 2: pack or did it just have the the Latin?
- 42:59Speaker 3: I don't remember, and English reads the same to me.
- 43:01Speaker 2: So that is some good barroom wisdom. You can drop it.
- 43:05Speaker 3: I can't believe I got to pull that one today.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Very nice. Now, Kansas is known for its bison and
- 43:10Speaker 2: white tails, its prairies. The world record flathead catfish was
- 43:14Speaker 2: caught there, but instead of showing any of that cool stuff,
- 43:17Speaker 2: they just have this sterile lay mass logo. Come on, Kansas.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Such a disappointment. And number one is the New York
- 43:26Speaker 2: Department of Environmental Conservation. New York has a roundel logo
- 43:31Speaker 2: which just means that it's a circle, like Target or
- 43:33Speaker 2: Pepsi or Starbucks. Usually roundel's have less personality to begin with.
- 43:39Speaker 2: But then New York's is just an absolute dud. It's
- 43:42Speaker 2: got flat blue water, green mountains, and then a white
- 43:45Speaker 2: sky that turns to a blue sky for some reason.
- 43:48Speaker 2: If you remove the words New York Department of Environmental
- 43:50Speaker 2: Conservation from this logo, you'd have no idea what it
- 43:52Speaker 2: is now. I don't even think you would know the
- 43:54Speaker 2: orientation of the logo if it's like supposed to be
- 43:57Speaker 2: upside down or sideways or what's going on.
- 43:59Speaker 4: Like a bouncy ball you get out of a vending machine.
- 44:01Speaker 2: There you go. That's just how ambiguous this is. New
- 44:05Speaker 2: York has the finger legs, all kinds of game animals,
- 44:08Speaker 2: plus they have the availability of all the aquatic creatures whales, sharks,
- 44:12Speaker 2: atlantic sturgeon, and they ignore all of that for this
- 44:15Speaker 2: sad depiction of nature. Shame on you, New York. You
- 44:18Speaker 2: have so much potential for a badass logo, but instead
- 44:22Speaker 2: you have the worst one in the country. And then
- 44:25Speaker 2: I've got a bunch of honorable mentions here, Phil, let's
- 44:28Speaker 2: pull those up. We have the Connecticut Department of Energy
- 44:32Speaker 2: and Environmental Protection. New logo is awful, and they even
- 44:35Speaker 2: did a redesign in twenty twenty two, and that's the
- 44:37Speaker 2: best they could come up with. Illinois just zero character.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Looks like the logo for a publishing agency or maybe
- 44:43Speaker 2: an orange juice brand. I don't know, just really terrible stuff. Indiana,
- 44:48Speaker 2: their DNR logo is maybe the worst in the country.
- 44:51Speaker 2: They do have a brand specifically for the Fish and
- 44:54Speaker 2: Wildlife Management that does have a logo of a fish
- 44:57Speaker 2: and a duck, but it still sucks. Iowa no personality.
- 45:01Speaker 2: I actually don't hate iowas I kind of like the
- 45:03Speaker 2: colors in the font, but it's still a bad, ugly logo.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Michigan bad logo. Also a weird choice to include three
- 45:11Speaker 2: great lakes in their logo Superior Michigan and hereon, even
- 45:15Speaker 2: though the state touches a fourth great lake, Lake Erie.
- 45:18Speaker 2: I'd be pissed if I was lake Erie.
- 45:20Speaker 3: You know what.
- 45:21Speaker 2: I think lake Erie is too good for Michigan. This
- 45:24Speaker 2: logo tells me that they don't appreciate it enough. So
- 45:27Speaker 2: I'm gonna take lake Erie away from Michigan and give
- 45:30Speaker 2: it all to Ohio. They don't deserve it. They deserve
- 45:33Speaker 2: better because they can't even get shown in the logo
- 45:36Speaker 2: with the other three great lakes that touch the state.
- 45:39Speaker 2: Then we have North Carolina and Texas. These logos are similar,
- 45:43Speaker 2: it's text only. Honestly, I don't hate them quite as
- 45:46Speaker 2: much as the others. They look out doorsy at least.
- 45:49Speaker 2: And then we have Minnesota terrible logo created twenty sixteen
- 45:53Speaker 2: as part of a statewide program slaman boring. But I
- 45:56Speaker 2: want to share this. I went to their Facebook page
- 45:59Speaker 2: to see what people were saying when the logo change happened,
- 46:01Speaker 2: because these groups always have to change their profile picture,
- 46:05Speaker 2: and when their profile picture change happened, there was only
- 46:09Speaker 2: one single comment on that photo. Please show it Phil.
- 46:11Speaker 2: It was Jeff Dale. He asked three years ago are
- 46:14Speaker 2: hot dogs legal to use for ice fishing? And sadly
- 46:17Speaker 2: nobody has responded to jet. So if you know the
- 46:20Speaker 2: answer for Jeff, please go to the Minnesota Department of
- 46:23Speaker 2: Natural Resources facebook page, look at the posts from when
- 46:26Speaker 2: they changed their profile picture in twenty twenty one, and
- 46:29Speaker 2: let Jeff know if hot dogs are legal or not
- 46:32Speaker 2: for ice fishing. Those are the three worst logos, and
- 46:37Speaker 2: then eight honorable mentions. And here's here's like my suggestion
- 46:41Speaker 2: to these eleven states, hold a contest for a logo redesign.
- 46:45Speaker 2: You could be open to the general public. It could
- 46:47Speaker 2: be for an arts program at a college, it could
- 46:49Speaker 2: be a local school. States do this all the time
- 46:51Speaker 2: with flag redesigns. That's how Minnesota and Alaska have wound
- 46:54Speaker 2: up with two of the best state flags. You don't
- 46:56Speaker 2: have to be like Oklahoma and pay an agency one
- 46:58Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars, which is what they did in twenty
- 47:01Speaker 2: twenty two. There are cheap, even free alternatives that could
- 47:04Speaker 2: fix this problem.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Wow suggestion. Did you ever read the column on page
- 47:10Speaker 3: two of ESPN dot com called uni watch.
- 47:14Speaker 2: I I read it a little bit. I had less
- 47:18Speaker 2: familiarity with that than when it became a Twitter account.
- 47:21Speaker 2: Because they have great tweets covering all of the uniforms
- 47:25Speaker 2: that happen in pro sports and amateur.
- 47:27Speaker 3: This is very reminiscent of uni watch.
- 47:29Speaker 2: I like looking at these things.
- 47:31Speaker 3: I like powerful emotions about something that I think it's
- 47:33Speaker 3: called People don't think.
- 47:34Speaker 2: Twice vexology is studying flag design. I really enjoy that
- 47:39Speaker 2: as well, and I've always been disappointed that I've lived
- 47:41Speaker 2: in states that usually have really crappy flags like Montana's
- 47:45Speaker 2: is just the state seal, which unless if you're like
- 47:49Speaker 2: sixteen inches away from it, you have no idea what
- 47:51Speaker 2: you're looking at. So I love Montana if they would
- 47:54Speaker 2: fix that state flag. Yeah, all right, let's do our
- 47:57Speaker 2: next top three I think we are going to do
- 48:00Speaker 2: who Feiel next?
- 48:01Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's my turn, hil yep, yep again.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Well not not again, but I mean again, I'm bringing
- 48:07Speaker 4: something stupid and weird, but you know it's it's the
- 48:10Speaker 4: holiday season, the spooky Halloween season. I'm wearing I'm wearing
- 48:14Speaker 4: my jack lantern sweater. Corey got mad at me for
- 48:18Speaker 4: wearing it a week early.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Not mad.
- 48:21Speaker 4: So I decided to make my top three list of
- 48:24Speaker 4: horror villain horror movie villains I would want to go
- 48:27Speaker 4: hunting with. This is coming from someone who can count
- 48:30Speaker 4: the number of animals he's shot on one hand, but
- 48:33Speaker 4: I think I can still bring a lot to the table.
- 48:34Speaker 2: Gay, yes, thank you.
- 48:36Speaker 4: So the first one that we have here is Sam
- 48:39Speaker 4: from the from Trick or Treat Familiar Horror Anthology. Oh
- 48:43Speaker 4: he's big at spirit Hot Halloween pros of sam or
- 48:47Speaker 4: that he's small's small, Oh he's a child, you know,
- 48:51Speaker 4: I'd say like like three and a half four feet tall,
- 48:54Speaker 4: hard heart for wildlife the spot. He comes with Hunter's
- 48:56Speaker 4: orange already and a game bag, so he's prepared, Hans.
- 49:00Speaker 4: The scent control might be a little difficult with the weird,
- 49:02Speaker 4: fleshy pumpkinhead that's under his sack, which is not pictured here,
- 49:05Speaker 4: but it's it. I'm sure it smells terrible. Number two
- 49:10Speaker 4: we have Freddy Krueger pros. He brings his own set
- 49:14Speaker 4: of knives. Yes, cons he can only kill animals in
- 49:17Speaker 4: their dreams. Might be a problem, but it could be
- 49:19Speaker 4: an interesting, uh hunting trip, something new and new experience
- 49:23Speaker 4: for you. He may not be able to possess a
- 49:25Speaker 4: gun because of the whole child predator and serial killing. Yeah,
- 49:28Speaker 4: this one comes with an an asterisk though, because cocted
- 49:32Speaker 4: that's the thing he was. He was killed by a
- 49:34Speaker 4: vigilante mob before he was ever convicted, so there's no
- 49:38Speaker 4: legal record of him not being able like being being
- 49:41Speaker 4: you know, convicted of a crime.
- 49:43Speaker 2: And do both hands have the knives or is it
- 49:45Speaker 2: just one hand?
- 49:48Speaker 4: Spencer You've put me on the spot here I'm trying
- 49:49Speaker 4: to picture it, but I can't.
- 49:50Speaker 2: I can't. I'm just like trying to logistically can draw
- 49:54Speaker 2: a bow back?
- 49:54Speaker 3: I just I just know my friend had a glove
- 49:57Speaker 3: that had the knives on it, and he only had one.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Wasn't a set? That might have just been because he
- 50:02Speaker 3: lost it.
- 50:03Speaker 4: No, it's just one hand.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Figure it out.
- 50:06Speaker 4: Then yep. Okay, number one, that's number.
- 50:08Speaker 3: Of time pulling a bow back.
- 50:11Speaker 4: Number one, We've got the blair Witch. The blair Witch
- 50:14Speaker 4: is not pictured here. That is one of her victims
- 50:17Speaker 4: in Time Out pros. She remains completely unseen. She's never
- 50:21Speaker 4: been seen. She's very familiar with the Maryland Woods specifically,
- 50:24Speaker 4: so this kind of you know, you're limited to a
- 50:27Speaker 4: one geographical area, but I think you can make a
- 50:30Speaker 4: lot out of it. Another pro leaves crafts hanging from
- 50:33Speaker 4: tree so you won't get lost. There's another asterisk here
- 50:35Speaker 4: that didn't really help the the kids that were in
- 50:38Speaker 4: the film, they got very lost. But I think that's
- 50:41Speaker 4: that's because she was being antagonistic towards them. I think
- 50:43Speaker 4: if she were aligned, we had similar goals of trying
- 50:45Speaker 4: to get a deer. I think it could help. Another
- 50:48Speaker 4: pro has her own cabin.
- 50:50Speaker 3: Yep, that's true.
- 50:51Speaker 4: It's out there in the woods already. Con makes you
- 50:53Speaker 4: face the wall while she does all the processing. Another
- 50:56Speaker 4: asterisk here, maybe, I mean that's she's kind. She's doing
- 51:00Speaker 4: all the work, but you know, you kind of want
- 51:01Speaker 4: to help out, like she invited you along. She helped
- 51:03Speaker 4: you get the deer?
- 51:05Speaker 8: Phil.
- 51:05Speaker 2: How old are you when that movie came out?
- 51:07Speaker 4: That was ninety nine? I believe so I was eight.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Was that impaired on you? Or was it not on you?
- 51:11Speaker 4: I didn't see it until college?
- 51:12Speaker 2: Now, how about you, Rand? How old were you in
- 51:15Speaker 2: nineteen ninety nine?
- 51:16Speaker 3: Ninety nine? I was thirteen years old.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Did you watch The Blair Witch Project?
- 51:22Speaker 3: Not until later? And it's a movie. It's a movie
- 51:25Speaker 3: that I forgot about for decades and then it popped
- 51:28Speaker 3: onto my mental bradar again a couple years ago, and
- 51:33Speaker 3: and I just thought, what a weird thing that was.
- 51:36Speaker 2: But it like kind of crushed it.
- 51:37Speaker 3: It was very culturally like people people didn't know if
- 51:41Speaker 3: it was real.
- 51:41Speaker 4: Oh yeah, they marketed that way. They shot up for
- 51:43Speaker 4: like twelve thousand bucks and it made tens of millions
- 51:46Speaker 4: of the bucks I have. They do have some some
- 51:48Speaker 4: honorable mentions. I was going to say, we've got there's obviously,
- 51:51Speaker 4: we've got leather face, just sheer enthusiasm from that guy,
- 51:54Speaker 4: and he might you know, he's he's got a lot
- 51:57Speaker 4: of experienced skinning. Edward Cullen from a horror movie. Not
- 52:01Speaker 4: a villain either, but a vampire who is who hunts,
- 52:05Speaker 4: who kills deer and sucks deer blood, but doesn't because
- 52:08Speaker 4: he's trying. He doesn't want to kill humans.
- 52:09Speaker 3: Doesn't the werewolf guy in that one, the you know,
- 52:12Speaker 3: the the yeah Jacob, Yeah, doesn't he kill a deer
- 52:15Speaker 3: in that Actually.
- 52:17Speaker 4: I've only seen the films once, Like I don't recall.
- 52:20Speaker 3: To watch them.
- 52:20Speaker 2: They move incredibly fast. Oh, they're very blinking.
- 52:23Speaker 4: Yeah, their skins kind of sparkly, which might be a problem.
- 52:26Speaker 3: Fast like my top three.
- 52:27Speaker 4: And then we've got we've got Hannibal Lecter, probably not
- 52:32Speaker 4: much of a hunter, but we've seen Anthony hopkins skills
- 52:35Speaker 4: in the edge and so if he can, if any
- 52:36Speaker 4: of those transfer over to any of his other characters.
- 52:39Speaker 4: We've seen how how quickly he can skin out of
- 52:43Speaker 4: animals at a bear.
- 52:45Speaker 3: He's a great cook too, that's a thing he'll be able.
- 52:47Speaker 4: To pair your gay meat with the perfect wine. Anyway,
- 52:50Speaker 4: those that's my top three in honorable mentions.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Very good, fantastic, he likes that tiger meat. There you go,
- 52:57Speaker 2: it's raw. All right, We have our last time. Three
- 53:00Speaker 2: is from Randall. Randall, take it away.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Well, I was going to do a top three at
- 53:03Speaker 3: top threes with my top three ideas for top three.
- 53:08Speaker 2: For a peak behind the curtain. Randall was working on
- 53:10Speaker 2: this at eleven or excuse me, ten fifty five Callahan code.
- 53:16Speaker 3: Yep. I'm going to go with my top three things
- 53:19Speaker 3: to eat after I get out of the elk woods. Yeah,
- 53:23Speaker 3: the way home. Number three, and it could be higher
- 53:26Speaker 3: except for one complication. Number three is chicken wings because
- 53:31Speaker 3: you can eat as many as you want and not
- 53:34Speaker 3: feel bad about it, and it's just a gluttonous experience.
- 53:38Speaker 3: The catch is that you eat them with your hands,
- 53:41Speaker 3: so if you've been successful hunting, you know, even even
- 53:45Speaker 3: one wash after you cut up an elk, one hand
- 53:47Speaker 3: wash isn't sufficient, so you really it's it's only for
- 53:52Speaker 3: the sort of consolation post hunt meal. Unsuccessful huh yeah,
- 53:56Speaker 3: but just a great just a great food. You can
- 53:58Speaker 3: sit there at the bar watch the game you know,
- 54:00Speaker 3: and typically the spice encouraged you to hydrate or im vibe.
- 54:08Speaker 2: Can I guess one of your next two that you're
- 54:10Speaker 2: going to say?
- 54:11Speaker 3: Sure?
- 54:12Speaker 2: Is it going to be a taco bell like a crunch? Okay,
- 54:15Speaker 2: well you didn't have to say, I was right, go ahead.
- 54:17Speaker 3: Sorry, I thought you were going to make a funny guess,
- 54:19Speaker 3: not like poking holes in my battleship. Number two is
- 54:23Speaker 3: a burger and a beer, just at a bar roadside tavern,
- 54:28Speaker 3: preferably not a chain, although you can get a nice
- 54:32Speaker 3: burger at chilies.
- 54:34Speaker 2: You When have you ever walked into a Chili's after
- 54:36Speaker 2: a hunt? Never?
- 54:41Speaker 3: You're poking holes in all my.
- 54:44Speaker 2: Sorry, Sorry, I did we did eat.
- 54:46Speaker 3: I did eat at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Great
- 54:48Speaker 3: Falls three times in a row during the hunt, three
- 54:52Speaker 3: nights in a row. The guy was sweet.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Were they like the usual by the time you came in?
- 54:56Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, the guy the guy was he wasn't from
- 54:58Speaker 3: Great Falls, but he used to at a Buffalo Wild Wings,
- 55:01Speaker 3: New Jersey, and I was asking what happened to the
- 55:03Speaker 3: buffalo chips and cheese, and he was so pissed, But
- 55:07Speaker 3: then he sold us on a couple of menu items
- 55:09Speaker 3: that we hadn't tried yet.
- 55:11Speaker 2: What what what sauces do you get?
- 55:15Speaker 3: I typically just go for hot buffalo if I'm in
- 55:19Speaker 3: a if I'm in a sort of feeling bad about
- 55:22Speaker 3: my self moods, it's typically like a be a honey barbecue.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't know this could be emotion.
- 55:28Speaker 4: De Gordon is asking for your your preferred flat to
- 55:31Speaker 4: drummy ratio. And yes they use the term drummy fitty
- 55:34Speaker 4: fitty perfect.
- 55:36Speaker 2: I would take all drummis all flats.
- 55:38Speaker 3: Yeah, I like I like the flats. I like to
- 55:40Speaker 3: turn my flat. There's more work. And number one is
- 55:44Speaker 3: Taco Bell.
- 55:47Speaker 2: Who could have seen that coming?
- 55:48Speaker 3: Taco Bell is great because it comes to you quickly. Uh,
- 55:52Speaker 3: there's one right by my house on the way back
- 55:55Speaker 3: from my elk hunting spots. You can order in volume
- 55:59Speaker 3: without feeling guilty or breaking the bank. And typically when
- 56:03Speaker 3: I'm out in the woods, I'm sweating a lot. And
- 56:05Speaker 3: there's nothing better to put in your body when you're
- 56:07Speaker 3: sweating than mountain dew. Mountain dew in the original flavor
- 56:12Speaker 3: or Baja blast, is one of nature's finest revitalizing substances.
- 56:19Speaker 3: And you know, I've I've developed a pretty serious habit
- 56:22Speaker 3: back in my deck staining days. You know, you get
- 56:25Speaker 3: a big sixty four ounce from the convenience store, sixty
- 56:28Speaker 3: four ounce mountain dew on tap, big gulps. Oh yeah,
- 56:31Speaker 3: big gulps. But uh, I don't They don't call them
- 56:33Speaker 3: that at Speedway. But yeah, Taco Bell is just you
- 56:38Speaker 3: can't go wrong. I typically would order a crunt trap
- 56:40Speaker 3: or two, a couple of soft tacos, and then maybe
- 56:44Speaker 3: like one of the value burritos.
- 56:46Speaker 4: Okay, Randal we talked to. It's not like the show
- 56:48Speaker 4: is going long or anything. But Randall, we talked about
- 56:50Speaker 4: this briefly in Nashville of mountain dew VARIETYLS.
- 56:53Speaker 3: Yeah, could you do a sub.
- 56:55Speaker 4: Top three of mountain des I bet.
- 56:57Speaker 2: Randall is not a pearist. I would bet he's goes
- 56:59Speaker 2: the other the spectrum and he's like making mountain dew suicides.
- 57:03Speaker 3: No, no, I am, I am a purist. Oh wow,
- 57:06Speaker 3: I think the original, the original, the original mixture is
- 57:11Speaker 3: the only mountain dew one should drink unless you're at
- 57:13Speaker 3: a Taco Bell to get Baja blast. And really the
- 57:17Speaker 3: only one that I can speak to is Code Red. Yeah,
- 57:20Speaker 3: but Phil is actually quite a connoisseur.
- 57:23Speaker 4: Yeah, back back in high school, I drank. I drank
- 57:27Speaker 4: too much Mountain de Do. I've had to quit soda
- 57:29Speaker 4: cold turkey because it was such a problem.
- 57:30Speaker 2: When did that happen?
- 57:32Speaker 3: Uh?
- 57:32Speaker 4: In college? Yeah, I would say, uh, baja blast number one,
- 57:39Speaker 4: original number two, number three Mountain Dew game fuel, which
- 57:44Speaker 4: was the license tie into Halo three. When that came
- 57:46Speaker 4: back back in like two thousand and nine or something,
- 57:48Speaker 4: whenever Halo freaking out two and seven, they stopped making it.
- 57:52Speaker 4: They tried to turn it into an energy drink. It
- 57:53Speaker 4: tasted like ass, and then they remade it with the
- 57:56Speaker 4: original formula. It is just a normal soda a few
- 57:58Speaker 4: years ago, but just as kind of like a limited
- 58:00Speaker 4: release thing. And I bought. I bought a lot, and
- 58:02Speaker 4: I relapsed for a week.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Oh but now, when did that happen?
- 58:06Speaker 4: A year or two ago? Okay, but it's like a
- 58:08Speaker 4: cherry citrus flavor. Very good.
- 58:09Speaker 3: I saw that swamp donkey. You wanted to know Top
- 58:12Speaker 3: three embarrassing hunting mistakes, and I will point out that
- 58:17Speaker 3: one of my other top threes was most embarrassing moments
- 58:21Speaker 3: in my fishing guide career. So we'll save that one
- 58:24Speaker 3: other day.
- 58:25Speaker 2: My correct guess of your taco bell order was based
- 58:29Speaker 2: on Randall and I had to host a company event
- 58:31Speaker 2: a few years ago where we had to make a
- 58:33Speaker 2: game for folks attending, and it was all guessing based
- 58:36Speaker 2: You look at this elkt shed and you guess it's score.
- 58:39Speaker 2: You'd lift this cooler and guess its weight. One of
- 58:41Speaker 2: them was we had you guess the calories of these
- 58:44Speaker 2: three things. One of them was like two s'mores. One
- 58:47Speaker 2: of the things you had to guess the calaries for
- 58:51Speaker 2: was Randall's post hunt meal. And I told Randall, I said,
- 58:54Speaker 2: rand to really use your imagination here. What would you
- 58:57Speaker 2: have after a hunt? And he selected too two tall
- 59:00Speaker 2: Boy Coors banquets and I think a grunch wrap supreme
- 59:05Speaker 2: with a couple packets of hot sauce. Yeah, that was Randall.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Guilty is charged, guiltiest charged. But I will point out
- 59:12Speaker 3: that there were backup crunch trap supremes in the fridge
- 59:16Speaker 3: and I expensed them all and I took them all home.
- 59:18Speaker 4: We've got people in the live chat sharing Mary talk
- 59:20Speaker 4: about orders with us.
- 59:21Speaker 2: It's the best.
- 59:21Speaker 4: This is the best time I've ever had running this show.
- 59:25Speaker 3: Good because we're running late.
- 59:29Speaker 2: All right, we are going to wrap it up now
- 59:31Speaker 2: with our final interview of the day. Joining us on
- 59:34Speaker 2: the line next is Michael Burton. Michael has developed the
- 59:38Speaker 2: most unique way in the country of finding new fishing spots. Michael,
- 59:41Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 59:44Speaker 4: Hello.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Michael has gained hundreds of thousands of social media followers
- 59:49Speaker 2: for his approach to getting people to tell him about
- 59:52Speaker 2: their secret honey holes. Michael explain to folks what you do?
- 59:57Speaker 1: So I make I make videos primarily on TikTok. Now
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: I used to make them on Instagram, and by far
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: my most successful series is catfishing people stealing their fishing
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: spots and then ranking their fishing spots to see how
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: well it does compare to the other spots I've stolen
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: from people.
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great content. It is what got you on
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: my radar. Why we're talking to you today. So the
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: fake account that you have are those pictures of a
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: girl you know? Or is this just a stranger?
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: So those are all real pictures of my girlfriend Brooke.
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: Oh and yeah, I use this as kind of the
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: introduction to the series, but whenever I make a new account,
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: it is pretty much the same pictures. It is always
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: the name B with the B emoji. And if you
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: see somebody else asking for fishing spots, they probably are
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: a catfish. But it's not gonna be me. I know
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: there's lots of other people doing this now.
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: Okay, So in your bio, I noticed it said some
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: stuff like what I enjoy doing fishing a goal of mine,
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: my first steelhead. That is how Michael gets these guys
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: to tell them his spots. Now, are you portraying someone
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: who really loves fishing or someone who's new to fishing,
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: someone who wants to go on a fishing day, like,
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: tell us about this character you've created.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: So essentially, I try to make it as obvious as
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: possible that I am who I am, especially to people
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: who have seen the content before. And then when people
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: match with me, I don't like string them along or
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: get them invested in me as a person. I feel
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: that's a little bit mean. Oh I just straight up
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: ask them, like, tell me where you caught this fish
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: fishing spots now? For whatever reason, that works really well
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: for guys.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: Oh okay, some desperate men out there holding fish on
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: dating apps for the locations guys give you, how often
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: are they actual secret spots versus just community holes that
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: everybody knows about.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: They're almost always community holes. Especially in the beginning when
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I wasn't famous for this, I get a lot of
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: people who clearly just googled fishing spots near Bend. And
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: because of that, if you look at the early content,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: it's a lot of like sea tier spots. As I
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: got a little bit better at catfishing, people people would
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: occasionally give me like less well known spots, but again
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: it's spots you could easily find on Google. It's very rare.
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: I get a suggestion that's like an actually good suggestion
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: that I haven't known about prior.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Okay, so tell us about some of the highlights, the
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: best days of fishing you've had thanks to Hinge.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: So I like it when I match with a fan
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: and they prank me, like they pretend to be somebody
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: who is like falling for the scam and then they
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: send me somewhere. So probably the funniest prank spot I've
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: been sent to is it looks like it's this lake
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: that's going to be super good on Google Earth. You know,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: it's off Elk Lake. It's nice and secluded, but it's
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: where the cramarants, nest or cormorants. I read how you
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: pronounce it. There's no fish in the lake like at all? Yeah,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: that spot exactly so, because there's like literally hundreds of
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: fishing birds, there's absolutely no fish. There's squawking the whole
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: time and yelling and just pooping in the water. It's
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: absolutely disgusting. So I brought my brother thinking it would
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: be like a fire secret spot, and no, we just
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: got pranked hard.
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: Oh okay, what about like real good days of fishing
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: though that you've had. What about some like highlights that
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: you've had.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: Yeah, So the best spot I've been recommended was also
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: a prank. Somebody found these giant cliffs along the Dishoots
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: River where there's just like no way to get down,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: and they said, oh, this is the spot, and I'm
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: a rock climber, so I'm like, okay, giant cliffs, let's go.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: So I get down to the river and I caught
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: close to thirty fish in an hour because nobody has
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: been there before. And that's actually now like my go
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: to spot. Whenever I want brown trout, I'll just stop
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: at that specific spot on the way home, throw on
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: a rainbow rappola, catch like five brown trout that are
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: keeper size, and then just climb back out and have dinner.
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: Wonderful. How about low lights? Besides the Cormorant Lake, where
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: have you wound up where the fishing was just dreadful?
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: There's actually been a lot of spots I've been to,
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: especially on the coast, where I'm not familiar with, where
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: it looks really good on Google, and then you get
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: there and it's just Kelp, like Kelp all around. You
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: can't throw a high low rig anywhere because it's just
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: gonna get stuck. You can't use a jig because it's
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: just gonna get stuck. And like, whenever I get to
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: these spots, I know like I've been got and I
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: just wasted a couple hours of driving, and then I'll
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: try to find a nearby spot so I can actually
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: make a video. Those spots tend not to make it
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: into the series because I don't want to post a
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: video where it's just like, yeah, I got screwed over
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: by Kelp for two hours straight.
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: I notice in all your videos you say that you
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: use Hinge. Why Hinge over the other dating apps like
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Tinder or bumble?
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Yes, so hinge has the benefit where people can match
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: with you and send you a message, and as the girl,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: you can read the message. So the vast majority of
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: matches I get with people are not fishermen. They're just
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: random people. They like, hey, no one's jacket, or they'll
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: just send you a life with no context. And if
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I had to sift through all of those matches, it
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: would be borderline impossible. I would also have to swipe
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: right on pretty much everybody, which would be a big
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: red flag in the system, and it'd get banned a
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: lot faster. Like I still get banned all the time.
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: But I assume if I was on the ender, just
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: like mashing right with every single person, my accounts would
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: only last.
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: Like a day or two.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Okay, a lot of strategy. I didn't suspect there. Now
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: you've done this experiment in Oregon and Hawaii. How did
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: men in those two states differ when it comes to
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: telling you about fishing spots?
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: In Hawaii, I didn't really get any good fishing spots.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: I don't know if it's because at that point my
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: series had, like not to brag, but like millions of
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: views and people just knew about me. But people would
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: just tell me to go to like this same exact
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: spot on Waikiki, which is where all the tourists hang
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: out m M, and then in or again I would
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: get I assume quite a few real suggestions of like
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: actual fishing spots.
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: Okay, now by this point you have seen thousands of
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: dating profiles of guys. Tell us about some of the
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: trends you've noticed with fishing pictures on dating apps.
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: Uh, everybody has the same pose with the fish where
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: they hold it out slightly in front of them and
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: they're smiling behind it. I don't know if that's a
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: good strategy or a bad strategy. But I've also seen
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: like some really creative pictures of people posing with fish.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: And again I'm not a girl. I can't say like
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: what is sexier or more attractive or what works better.
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: But those people who like you know, are standing somewhere
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: cool with the fish. It like a fish in their hand,
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: and you can see the fish relative to the person's
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: box and they're smiling like you know. To me, that
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: is like, oh, this person actually knows where to fish.
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: Let me go match with them.
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: And see if I can get that spot. How has
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: the catfishing been today? Have you been on Hinge yet
- 1:07:12Speaker 2: this morning?
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: I'm currently between accounts. The last time I made account,
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: it was almost entirely fans of the show trying to
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: prank me. So I don't know if I have to
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: retire the series or just keep it going as like
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: an inside joke. I still have a list of approximately
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: one hundred and fifty spots wow, catfish, Fryer that I
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: need to get through so I can at least keep
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: the series going for another year or two. But I
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: am looking at like, you know, alternative like heel content
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: where I'm slightly the bad guy, but I'm not being
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: mean to anybody, and you know, again focused on like
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: fishing and outdoorsy stuff.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Wonderful. Okay, I'm very excited for season two. If people
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: want to see your hinge catfishing and other fishing content,
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: where should they go to do that?
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: So I'm on TikTok only right now, I'm Central dot
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: orgon dot fishing. I would encourage people not to follow
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: the account unless you actually like the content, because I
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: have a very odd sense of humor. Really yeah, I'd
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: rather have people who actually appreciate that sense of humor
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: and like watch the whole videos as opposed to people
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: who just follow me for support and then don't watch
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: the videos and kind of ruin the algorithm.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: For me, it's very good stuff, Michael. I like watching
- 1:08:27Speaker 2: your content. I think folks will enjoy seeing your videos.
- 1:08:31Speaker 2: Very creative at it's very creative series.
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us in. Good luck on the dating apps.
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: All right, thank you for having me by now.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Hm, I'm speechless. I wonder how we would do another
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: part of the country. I feel like Oregon. I don't know, Phil,
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: you from that part.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: Phil, you're used to catfishing people online.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: What do you say one of my favorite pastimes. I mean,
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: Central Organs an incredible place, so it'd be plenty plenty
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: of opportunities down there, I would guess. But again, I'm
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: not not much much of a fisherman, so I couldn't
- 1:09:06Speaker 4: speak of that.
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: Okay, I feel like you do really well around here
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: because nobody's from here. Everybody's already ruined their friend's spot.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: Everybody's always open to sharing all their hot spots.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: I'm surprised I didn't know about this because one of
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: my favorite TV shows of all time was To Catch
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: a Predator.
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: I thought you're going to have a picture with Chris
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: with Chris Hansen, really i'd him. He signed, he signed
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: a book for me.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: Well was the occasion?
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: Oh, I was my best friend was the ASP president
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: and he was doing something with our schools. He was like,
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: we had sort of a we would watch to Catch
- 1:09:40Speaker 4: a Predator together. It's Chris Hansen's coming, I can get
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: you in. So yeah, it was.
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: It was good.
- 1:09:47Speaker 4: I thought I got the pack of my cards that
- 1:09:50Speaker 4: need to be.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: I thought, you're going to say your favorite show is
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: Was it Catfish with Neat? Uh? What's the MTV show?
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: There was Catfish, Cheaters, Cheaters, the old HBO I love
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: the host of that show got stamped. I think, yeah,
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: what a good tie in for this show. Wow, we
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: did it all right. That brings us to the end
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: of the episode. Phil, Let's get some feedback from the chat.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: We found we've had a very active chat, but not
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: a lot of questions. I think people are show but
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: like a very popular one has been gas cans. Spencer
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: going to reveal the gas cans this week.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: Not this week, but it's coming. I'm still going through
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: all the emails.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Very passionate folks wrote in about their favorite gas cans there.
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: I think two that stand out above the rest. So
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: I will get listeners that list very soon.
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: I'll be waiting.
- 1:10:35Speaker 4: Mike is wondering, Randall, have you ever read the book
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: The Long Rifle Stewart Edward White.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: I don't think that I have, and I can't answer
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: for Steve, but I'll check it out.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Steve hasn't, no, Mike.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: Actually, one of my other top threes was gonna be
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: best Books about shooting.
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: Oh, very good.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: Mike also has another question that might be dumb. I
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: don't know, because I don't know. I'm saying this about
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: me because I'm I'm dumb, and I don't know if
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: this is a good question or not. Why do I
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: always see or what do I always see in the
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: meat Eater videos on the gun muzzles to protect them,
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: like a muzzle condom or electrical tape.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Uh. Sometimes it's maybe literally a condom that folks will
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: put on there. And what's that doing, Randall.
- 1:11:14Speaker 3: It's keeping debris and moisture out of your barrel. I
- 1:11:18Speaker 3: typically use electrical tape. But then I was reading I.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Don't like where this is going. Well, I've always been
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: to the impression that that does nothing for your ballistics.
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: Oh no, it doesn't. But if you're using a high
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: volume suppressor, like a suppressor that that can catch a
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: lot of gas, there is the potential for complications using
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: the electrical tape method because your bullet, if enough gas
- 1:11:46Speaker 3: goes into your suppressor by the time that bullet is
- 1:11:50Speaker 3: at your muzzle, it could. But I don't know. But
- 1:11:53Speaker 3: it's just got me second guessing myself a little bit.
- 1:11:55Speaker 5: Well, if you have a suppressor, make sure you get
- 1:11:57Speaker 5: the FHF suppressor cover you.
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right, it'll keep the debris out, that's right.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: Next, we have a question from Mogor. Explain to a
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: European guy how long it takes you to get to work.
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: Apparently Randall lives way out in the middle of nowhere
- 1:12:13Speaker 4: to way out.
- 1:12:15Speaker 3: Well, RD thirty eight minutes if things are good, Yeah,
- 1:12:23Speaker 3: thirty eight. Well, because my truck knows where I'm going,
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: so it tells me. So that's how I I usually
- 1:12:30Speaker 3: like to leave forty five minutes early. Just a lot
- 1:12:35Speaker 3: of that is cutting through Bozeman.
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: We're approaching long commute season.
- 1:12:39Speaker 3: Twenty four Yeah, twenty four miles on the interstate, but
- 1:12:42Speaker 3: through a mountain pass. Yeah, through a mountain pass. But again,
- 1:12:46Speaker 3: I am only I think three miles from a Taco
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: bell maybe good.
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: I think my commute is probably like eighteen minutes.
- 1:12:53Speaker 5: What do you got, Corey, It takes about six minutes, Okay,
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: I could ride a bike here.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: No, I'm very close.
- 1:13:01Speaker 4: Phil, what's your commune like twenty twenty five depending, Yeah,
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: thirty eight.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: I'm on the other side of the past. That just
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: shows you how bad the infrastructure is here for motor
- 1:13:11Speaker 3: vehicle traffic. Hmm.
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: Our our producer who lives in Missoula, just said three hours.
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: Yeah. The average commute I just google it for Americans
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: as of twenty twenty three is twenty seven minutes, which
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: I feel like we've found close to that.
- 1:13:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: Chad is asking any tips for handling game meat with
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: trauma after being shot. I shot a buck in both
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: front shoulders, had a decent amount of trauma on the
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: insides of them.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: Cut it out, Chad, Yeah, getting rid of I know
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: that there's a trick. Yeah, you don't want bloodshot meat
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: with even if you're doing the thing lowest on the
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: totem pole and like turning it into to ground meat.
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: Just keep that that bloodshots.
- 1:13:48Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no secret secret sauce there.
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: Phil, What is the process for how I pick a
- 1:13:55Speaker 4: song to parody for a drop? There actually is a process.
- 1:13:57Speaker 4: I will open up a Spotify play list, like based
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: on a decade, so if I'm I kind of try to,
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: you know, span from sixties through current stuff, so I
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: also feel like a seventies song today, and then I'll
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: go through I'll scroll through all the biggest hits from
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: the seventies and then I'll be repeating the segment name
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: in my mind while I'm reading the list to try
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: to find, you know, some alliteration or rhyming or syllables
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: that match. Sometimes it's easier, like like hot Hot to
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: go for hot tips was obvious, but like doing Lose
- 1:14:24Speaker 4: Yourself for fake News, that one was a stretch. But
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: I was pretty proud of kind of making that work.
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: That's very good stuff. But yeah, that's how Phil.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: Also, he doesn't want to go too obvious when we
- 1:14:33Speaker 2: have when we do the let's talk about sex segment,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: I would have been very easy to do Saltan Peppa's No.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: I ended up using that song for sir a different segment,
- 1:14:43Speaker 4: which yeah, yeah, it's been a guessing.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do two more, Phil, you got two more?
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: Two more?
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: Uh nah, Well it's there's another one for me. But
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: that seems you Come on, we just counted specifically for
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: this one man, because no one's going to know what
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: the hell he's talking about. He's asking if I've played
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: Our Creators, which is the new hotness in gaming right now. No, no,
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: I'm not that it's a competitive sort of competitive multiplayer
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: game when when I've I've retired from those. I'm too old,
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: i have kids, i can't I can't do, and I've
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: been I'm a lapsed PC gamer. I've had a good
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: PC in years, so I'm I'm I strictly stick to
- 1:15:18Speaker 4: to console gaming for the most Partner Spencer, the other
- 1:15:22Speaker 4: Spencer was just at the met Eater flagship store and
- 1:15:26Speaker 4: he just wanted to give a shout out for for
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: for the for the crew there.
- 1:15:29Speaker 3: Shout out to the store boys.
- 1:15:31Speaker 2: We love the store boys, door boys. They have managed
- 1:15:34Speaker 2: to just fill that place with college age fellas and
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: they do a great job running it.
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: Yes, whatever, I need someone to go drink a cold one.
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: With, I'll do one that's for real, and we'll close out.
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: Store manager Brayden says, moving from Iowa to southern Idaho,
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: what versatile caliber rifle would you buy to hunt elk slash, deer,
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: slash other large game if you would only pick.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: One, only pick one in Idaho with elk, deer and
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: other large game. What do you got?
- 1:16:02Speaker 3: Randall Um, I don't think you need to overthink this.
- 1:16:07Speaker 3: My my question to you would be how experienced are
- 1:16:13Speaker 3: you shooting center fire rifles? I think, uh, choosing the
- 1:16:18Speaker 3: right bullet and knowing how that bullet performs and.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Give him an answer.
- 1:16:24Speaker 3: Creedmore, there we go.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: I think I would say a thirty odd six or
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: two seventy if you recoil conscious, maybe a three to
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: eight or a six five creed More Corey three hundred
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: win mag. Cory's go on the other end of the spectrum.
- 1:16:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I I shot everything with a three
- 1:16:39Speaker 3: hundred win mag for a while. I said, nothing wrong
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: with it.
- 1:16:44Speaker 5: I just can't quit. Yeah, new hot cartridges are so
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: lame to me.
- 1:16:48Speaker 3: Okay, three all the way.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: He asked for one suggestion, I think we gave him five.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: Good good luck, Brandon. All Right, that's the end of
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: this week's show. We'll be back here next week, same
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: time in place, by now
