- 0:05Speaker 1: There you go, there's Blady Carlisle and leave a light
- 0:08Speaker 1: on Classic there from nineteen eighty nine. Okay, as I said,
- 0:13Speaker 1: I've got Mark and Rebecca here in the studio before
- 0:17Speaker 1: we start, Rebecca accent Yorkshire that it's okay. I thought
- 0:22Speaker 1: we was going to fall out at one stage. I
- 0:25Speaker 1: thought we was gonna say it was Lankash here, and
- 0:26Speaker 1: I thought he was going to say, ye, yeah, well
- 0:29Speaker 1: I'm a Blackbone Rovers fan, so I thought you gonna
- 0:32Speaker 1: say it was from Burnley or something like that. We'd
- 0:34Speaker 1: fall out straight away. But no, well, welcome folks, thank
- 0:38Speaker 1: you for coming in this morning. It's much appreciated and
- 0:41Speaker 1: obviously we'd like to promote the Ladies Football Club here
- 0:45Speaker 1: in Folkston. And yeah, our first question, I think to
- 0:49Speaker 1: both of you, how did you first get involved with
- 0:52Speaker 1: folks in Victor Football Club?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Should I go Rebecca, Yeah, you go ahead. So both
- 0:59Speaker 2: our daughters played for the Shepewey School's side at the
- 1:04Speaker 2: time at about under eleven and they were enjoying that
- 1:10Speaker 2: very much. And at the end of the year there
- 1:13Speaker 2: wasn't going to be a further under twelve side, so
- 1:17Speaker 2: we had these fourteen or so girls who wanted to
- 1:21Speaker 2: play football and had nowhere to go. So we approached
- 1:24Speaker 2: folks in Victor at the time and asked if they
- 1:27Speaker 2: had room for a team under twelves girls and they
- 1:32Speaker 2: said yes, being them on board, and that's how we
- 1:33Speaker 2: started basically.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Okay, it's just as simple as that. Okay. And your involvement, Rebecca,
- 1:38Speaker 1: were you You was involved with that as well.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So yeah, So I was already coaching down at another
- 1:44Speaker 3: club and my daughter was playing a europe at the
- 1:47Speaker 3: other club and then district and then went to Folkeston
- 1:51Speaker 3: at under twelves and yeah, Shumdernard and ium denard whether
- 1:56Speaker 3: to move over, and then made the decision that actually,
- 1:59Speaker 3: I'll move over to what we were being offered was
- 2:01Speaker 3: really good. So I made the decision to move over there.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It wasn't us to start with, was it, Mark, No,
- 2:09Speaker 2: So we were just parents at that stage of the
- 2:10Speaker 2: girls playing during that first season under twelve in Victor.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Unfortunately the coach at that time had to leave and
- 2:19Speaker 2: there was no one to take over, and as is
- 2:21Speaker 2: with grassroots football, sometimes it's the parents who have to
- 2:24Speaker 2: step up. And because of our I guess history and
- 2:28Speaker 2: involvement in coaching at a time. Yeah, it was a
- 2:32Speaker 2: kind of a natural progression that we weren't going to
- 2:34Speaker 2: let our children not play football. So yeah, we took
- 2:37Speaker 2: the reins halfway through that first season.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Okay, so that's a sort of answer. My next question
- 2:43Speaker 1: really what your backgrounds are in football and also which
- 2:48Speaker 1: teams do you support. That's quite an interesting one you
- 2:51Speaker 1: being from Yorkshire.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not a Yorkshire team.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I support Charles Say Women and Men and Mark.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm I'm Brentford born and bred i am. I'm
- 3:05Speaker 2: from They've always supported them and yeah, and my background
- 3:09Speaker 2: in coaching is when I first started coaching from the
- 3:13Speaker 2: age of about sixteen seventeen, I was working for Brentford
- 3:16Speaker 2: then and yeah, I got involved coaching for them and
- 3:19Speaker 2: I did that for several years until until I had
- 3:22Speaker 2: to get a real job.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Remember watching Brentford at Wembley against Wigan Athletic enough one
- 3:27Speaker 1: of the Mickey Mouse Cups many many years ago, the
- 3:30Speaker 1: Fate Rover Trophy. I believe that was the one. I
- 3:32Speaker 1: was there. Yeah, me too. I see GS are your sponsors?
- 3:39Speaker 1: Are you actually looking for any other sponsors? And you know,
- 3:43Speaker 1: like for match day I don't know. Travel was always
- 3:48Speaker 1: always an important one. But how's that coming along?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Is? We We've been supported really well actually by the
- 3:56Speaker 2: club in GSE in sponsoring us this year, which has
- 3:59Speaker 2: been it's been fabulous actually to be honest with you.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And but this this week we've had our first player
- 4:08Speaker 2: sponsorship come through. Okay, yeah, our striker Hailey Tyrell, she's
- 4:14Speaker 2: she's now being sponsored. And we have lots of other
- 4:16Speaker 2: players now who are available to be sponsored. If people
- 4:18Speaker 2: want to get on board and I'd be associated with them,
- 4:21Speaker 2: And how can they do that?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Contact the club.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Directly basically on the commercial side and they will they
- 4:27Speaker 2: will facilitate that.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Okay, you heard it here first. Then on radio, Folks
- 4:32Speaker 1: do one O five point nine a FM. Get in
- 4:34Speaker 1: contact with folksing in Victor if you want to sponsor
- 4:37Speaker 1: any of the ladies for this cave and season, Rebecca
- 4:43Speaker 1: one of your goals for this season.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So we we're working hard making sure that the team's cohesive.
- 4:51Speaker 3: We've had some extra players come on board from the
- 4:55Speaker 3: women that we've already got, so we're working hard to
- 4:57Speaker 3: make sure that they work cohesively. And our goals are
- 5:01Speaker 3: always the same thing is to win and to be
- 5:04Speaker 3: promoted and to do the very best.
- 5:06Speaker 1: That we can.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And the women we have are so committed, they come
- 5:13Speaker 3: to training all the time, they want the best, they
- 5:15Speaker 3: work so cohesively as a team. So yeah, onwards and upwards.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, you know, coming through youth football for the
- 5:26Speaker 2: last five five years or so with this team, the
- 5:30Speaker 2: same group of girls, many of them have come all
- 5:32Speaker 2: the way through from the under elevens, under twelves. But yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 2: very young team because a lot of them have just
- 5:40Speaker 2: come from the under eighteens and we've there, We've sprinkled
- 5:43Speaker 2: that with some talent for some older ladies with more
- 5:48Speaker 2: experience playing women's football, and they've jeled really well.
- 5:53Speaker 1: As the results of have shown. Yeah, we're going to
- 5:58Speaker 1: play a couple of tunes now and we'll be back
- 5:59Speaker 1: with bat remark in a very few moments. So you
- 6:14Speaker 1: go there, Sweet from nineteen to seventy three, and that
- 6:17Speaker 1: was ballroom Blitz. I played that one because I bought
- 6:19Speaker 1: a job lower record yesterday and that was in it. Anyway,
- 6:24Speaker 1: back to Rebecca remark, did you join the Sweet? Was
- 6:28Speaker 1: it before your time? Just slightly before, very slightly, but
- 6:33Speaker 1: absolutely not before my name? Cool? So so far this
- 6:40Speaker 1: season we've played two league games and a cup game.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Is that correct? That is correct? Yes.
- 6:46Speaker 2: In the league, yep, and I do believe we are
- 6:49Speaker 2: top of it. At this present moment in time, we
- 6:51Speaker 2: are top of the league. Yes.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Did you expect at the start of the season, To
- 6:57Speaker 1: be honest, I didn't know what to expect. I was.
- 7:02Speaker 2: I don't think I slept for about four days before
- 7:04Speaker 2: the first game. Yes, yeah, no, I was. I was
- 7:06Speaker 2: so nervous. I didn't know what to expect. I didn't
- 7:08Speaker 2: know whether we were going to be excellent or I
- 7:12Speaker 2: didn't know what to expect. The other teams more than anything.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And yeah, so I've been absolutely thrilled with how we started.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Cool and you know you only went our Was it penalties?
- 7:21Speaker 1: I believe to howkid in the A Cup competition? Yes,
- 7:26Speaker 1: that's my absolute crazy game that was Was it three
- 7:29Speaker 1: nil apple or.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Three nil in seventeen minutes? Three or halftime? And yeah,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and lost them penalties.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Unbelievable. You can't make those sort of thea. Yeah, I mean,
- 7:41Speaker 1: I mean this Sunday we were home again. Is that correct?
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yes, that's right, And we really really really want you
- 7:47Speaker 3: all to come and watch us and support us. The
- 7:50Speaker 3: women just find the atmosphere amazing. We've got a home
- 7:53Speaker 3: crowd there who really really supported us in that first
- 7:58Speaker 3: home game at the stadium, and we really want everyone
- 8:01Speaker 3: to come again on Sunday.
- 8:03Speaker 1: So if you heard it first here, the ladies want
- 8:06Speaker 1: your support, So get yourself down to the Alkaline Stadium,
- 8:09Speaker 1: Share and Road for two pm kickoff. I believe it is, yes,
- 8:13Speaker 1: two pm kickoff. Weather's supposed to be quite nice. Fingers crossed.
- 8:17Speaker 1: We hope for no black clouds and that horrible wet
- 8:20Speaker 1: stuff just yet. Yeah, go along down there. I believe
- 8:23Speaker 1: it's free to get in.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Still, it's going to be free this season for the women,
- 8:27Speaker 3: so come along and support us.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So there you go, and if you'll fancy a drink,
- 8:31Speaker 1: I suppose you can go into the dugout and they'll
- 8:34Speaker 1: probably be doing food as well, so yeah, it'd be
- 8:37Speaker 1: a nice family afternoon over there. Crowd about three hundred,
- 8:41Speaker 1: was it the first time we played there? It was?
- 8:43Speaker 1: It was.
- 8:44Speaker 3: It was amazing, even though the weather was horrific, absolutely
- 8:48Speaker 3: poured down, but the crowd, which is fantastic.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I mean that is good. I mean three hundred. Some
- 8:56Speaker 1: of the teams that the folks and if it's a
- 8:59Speaker 1: first team player. I will mention names we get eventually,
- 9:02Speaker 1: they never get over one hundred normally unless we play
- 9:04Speaker 1: them three hundred. You know, you've trebled the trebled their
- 9:10Speaker 1: gate already, so you must be doing something right. You're
- 9:13Speaker 1: talking a little bit earlier off air about how far
- 9:17Speaker 1: you have to go to go up the pyramid, and
- 9:20Speaker 1: you're saying mark something that you have to win about
- 9:22Speaker 1: four divisions before you can get up to the next level. Yes, yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 1: it might even be one or two more.
- 9:27Speaker 2: To be honest, you know, I've done some research because
- 9:30Speaker 2: I have ambitions for this club. Of course we want
- 9:34Speaker 2: to move forwards, but if yeah, even just to reach
- 9:36Speaker 2: you know, we're tier seven and if you want to
- 9:39Speaker 2: reach tier six, you've got to get promoted something like
- 9:42Speaker 2: five times to get to that next tier. But that's
- 9:45Speaker 2: what we want to do.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And I'll have you know, you get them sort of
- 9:50Speaker 1: crowds coming back to you and next year, obviously they
- 9:53Speaker 1: might have to pay a little bit somebody that they'll
- 9:55Speaker 1: be coming into your coffers and you know, you'll be
- 9:57Speaker 1: able to improve everyere. Hopefully the plastic pich will be
- 10:00Speaker 1: down by next season and we maybe have to have
- 10:04Speaker 1: more different ages. Like at the moment you've got the
- 10:08Speaker 1: ladies team and I don't quite know what else a club.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I've got a.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Good selection of girls teams, so there's quite a lot
- 10:17Speaker 3: of age groups playing, which we're really lucky with. And
- 10:21Speaker 3: we'd like to up our training, wouldn't we. We'd like
- 10:24Speaker 3: more training slots. That's something that Mark and I are
- 10:27Speaker 3: going to work on. At the moment we have once
- 10:31Speaker 3: a week, but I think moving forward, as the team grows,
- 10:36Speaker 3: I think we'd like extra training slots, wouldn't we, Mark.
- 10:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the benefit of having your own three G pitch.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I guess you know, we want to be more professional
- 10:45Speaker 2: as we go forwards, and you know we want to
- 10:47Speaker 2: train at least, you know, twice a week and.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Improve.
- 10:53Speaker 2: We just want to keep improving at this stage, and
- 10:55Speaker 2: that's it. That's what you can't really ask for much more.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Like you said, you have a different age level in
- 11:03Speaker 2: your teams at the moment, some older heads with the
- 11:07Speaker 2: youngsters giving them experience, and it seems to have gelled
- 11:11Speaker 2: quite well so far.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:13Speaker 2: Absolutely, I think we've had something around five new players
- 11:17Speaker 2: joined in pre season, as well as most of the
- 11:21Speaker 2: under eighteens that came up from last year and yeah,
- 11:25Speaker 2: that experience has really shown. And yeah, and they've they've
- 11:29Speaker 2: grown the whole team a lot in the pre season,
- 11:32Speaker 2: in the first few games.
- 11:34Speaker 1: And you know, just talking about the age.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Groups, you know, there's probably at least four or five
- 11:38Speaker 2: now lower age groups for girls at Folkston in Victor,
- 11:43Speaker 2: so lots of opportunity. And we're already looking at the
- 11:46Speaker 2: next ones coming through. And they want that pathway to
- 11:49Speaker 2: play now and they've got that at Folkston and yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 2: and somewhere to play and somewhere to look to aspire to.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean that sounds great. I mean they're more
- 11:59Speaker 1: obviously maybe be some young girls out there wanting to
- 12:02Speaker 1: play football but don't know how to get in touch again.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Obviously that may be through folksing in Victor. Are you
- 12:11Speaker 1: still looking for players for this season or have you
- 12:13Speaker 1: got your nucleus of the team or you're still looking
- 12:17Speaker 1: to Expand we have a nucleus of a team. We
- 12:21Speaker 1: have a good size squad.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Having said that, every team wants to improve, and I
- 12:26Speaker 2: have the right players come along and I think they
- 12:28Speaker 2: can improve the team, then then we'll obviously be looking
- 12:33Speaker 2: at OZ very carefully. I would never say no to
- 12:36Speaker 2: anybody not to come and you know and try it out.
- 12:40Speaker 2: If you think that you are you want to take part.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Well there you go. I mean, if you are out
- 12:46Speaker 1: there and you're listening in and you do want to
- 12:48Speaker 1: play football, you're a young girl and you don't think
- 12:51Speaker 1: there's anywhere to play. Obviously, folkusing in Victor is the
- 12:54Speaker 1: place to go. Again. You can get through to Mark
- 12:58Speaker 1: or Rebecca via the Folks in Victor's website. There is
- 13:01Speaker 1: a part on there which is for the latest part.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Just click on there and just get into contact and
- 13:08Speaker 1: then obviously get back to you. And who knows, you
- 13:11Speaker 1: could be the next we're trying to think of the
- 13:15Speaker 1: English superstar at the moment, just the next Hailey Toll. Yeah, yeah, yes,
- 13:23Speaker 1: me and keV were talking earlier on about hat tricks
- 13:26Speaker 1: and that, and she's any more hat tricks, you'll have
- 13:28Speaker 1: no balls left. Yes, two hat tricks in two league games.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean, that's great going. Obviously, got a
- 13:39Speaker 1: couple of more little things I want to ask you,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and I'll stick it on the record on and then
- 13:45Speaker 1: I'll get back to you. This is Abba and this
- 13:50Speaker 1: is ANGELI. There you go, Abba and angel eyes. On
- 14:07Speaker 1: the other side of that was Voulez vous double a
- 14:09Speaker 1: side many many years ago, back in nineteen seventeen nine. God,
- 14:13Speaker 1: where does the time go? Okay, guys, last a little
- 14:18Speaker 1: bit before year. Here this afternoon up. Sorry in small note,
- 14:21Speaker 1: still this morning. You have to forgive me. I'm not
- 14:25Speaker 1: I'm on medication. When I was back at school, I
- 14:29Speaker 1: would just like to mention this, girls were probably frowned
- 14:35Speaker 1: upon for playing football, and I could always remember I
- 14:37Speaker 1: used to go to George Spurgeon School. I can't remember
- 14:41Speaker 1: what it's called now. I know it's changed its name,
- 14:43Speaker 1: but every break and at lunchtime we would always play football,
- 14:51Speaker 1: and there was always this one girl and she was
- 14:54Speaker 1: head and shoulders probably about above most of the boys.
- 14:58Speaker 1: And her name was Lorraine. I don't know if you
- 15:02Speaker 1: never heard of ray Maki, but there's a bit of
- 15:04Speaker 1: a brue hahar George Spurgeon's school about her playing for
- 15:07Speaker 1: the school team. Back then. The fa No no, no,
- 15:14Speaker 1: no no no. She was good enough, and I can
- 15:17Speaker 1: remember even to this day that her parents thought too
- 15:21Speaker 1: for now for her to try and play for the
- 15:22Speaker 1: school team. But it didn't happen. Has things changed now?
- 15:27Speaker 1: Do girls. Actually are they allowed to play for the
- 15:30Speaker 1: school team or is it just a girls' school team now?
- 15:33Speaker 3: Now things have changed. Back when I was younger, when
- 15:35Speaker 3: I was at school, we weren't allowed to play football,
- 15:39Speaker 3: so my brothers played football at school and for teams,
- 15:42Speaker 3: and I wasn't allowed, so I joined a hockey team,
- 15:46Speaker 3: which was the closest thing I could get to football.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So the opportunities back then just weren't there. But as
- 15:54Speaker 3: my daughters have grown, I've seen the opportunity becoming more
- 15:58Speaker 3: and more. But certainly in the last couple of years
- 16:02Speaker 3: we've seen the opportunities grow bigger. And Fox and in
- 16:06Speaker 3: Victory in particular with their they've got many girls teams
- 16:09Speaker 3: now and their support is amazing. We want to thank
- 16:14Speaker 3: Kat for our endless questions that we sent her all
- 16:18Speaker 3: the time, moving from girls to women. She's very supportive.
- 16:22Speaker 3: So it's definitely growing, is the game. And you know
- 16:26Speaker 3: at schools now. I work at a school and we
- 16:29Speaker 3: have a girls football academy there as well, and Fox
- 16:32Speaker 3: and in Victor have a football academy. So it's definitely growing.
- 16:36Speaker 3: It's moving in the right direction.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Yeah, as I say, prehistoric back in the seventies when
- 16:42Speaker 1: I was playing. You know, she was brilliant, brilliant player,
- 16:47Speaker 1: but you know, because of her sex, she wasn't allowed
- 16:50Speaker 1: to play with them. It was it was a wrong.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Is there anything else you'd like to promote for your teams?
- 16:58Speaker 1: You've got the you've got the platform to do it.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So yeah, so yeah, just want to reiterate what Rebecca said. Yeah,
- 17:07Speaker 1: Kat Morris at the club, who basically looks after most
- 17:11Speaker 1: of the youth section, has been a real sort of
- 17:16Speaker 1: what's the word I'm looking for, But she's she's been
- 17:19Speaker 1: promoting and pushing for everything that we've got this year.
- 17:22Speaker 1: So I want to thank her and stand over looking
- 17:24Speaker 1: after us at the club. Alkaline and GC have really
- 17:29Speaker 1: really supported us by giving us access to the pitch,
- 17:32Speaker 1: the facilities, the sponsorships, et cetera. So yeah, we wouldn't
- 17:37Speaker 1: be where we are now without people like those looking
- 17:39Speaker 1: after us and wanting to be involved. But yeah, come
- 17:44Speaker 1: down watch a Sunday, get involved, support the team, your
- 17:49Speaker 1: local ladies team, your local women's team. And yeah, and
- 17:53Speaker 1: more importantly, if you someone you know wants to play,
- 17:56Speaker 1: get involved with with the club. There's age groups all
- 18:00Speaker 1: the way through the youth section for girls and yeah,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and hopefully we'll see you on the pitch playing for
- 18:05Speaker 1: the women a few yes time. That's exactly what we'd
- 18:08Speaker 1: like to hear. That's brilliant. Just anything from you, Rebecca
- 18:11Speaker 1: before I got onto the last little segment.
- 18:13Speaker 3: No, just exactly what Mark said. Really, you know, don't
- 18:16Speaker 3: give up. I spent my life fighting for things for
- 18:21Speaker 3: women and for football, and I think that you know,
- 18:25Speaker 3: we've moved on so much. It's fantastic to see the
- 18:28Speaker 3: sponsors GC have been absolutely amazing and we couldn't ask
- 18:33Speaker 3: for any more at this point.
- 18:34Speaker 1: It's great, brilliant. As I we didn't want me to
- 18:39Speaker 1: see side of the radio podcast. I normally ask five
- 18:41Speaker 1: city questions. They just either yes or no or as
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'll start with you, Rebecca, ladies first prosecco, bubbles or
- 18:52Speaker 1: ordinary red or white wine?
- 18:54Speaker 3: Oh, red wine, red wine, loger or bitter Mark?
- 18:59Speaker 1: Oh, lager to your coffee, Rebecca coffee black all the way.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Saving question to you Mark, See he's got one, he's
- 19:08Speaker 1: got one with him. I don't Rebecca nineteen watching a
- 19:12Speaker 1: film or going out booging? Oh? Watching a film? What
- 19:17Speaker 1: type of film? Oh? I like all genres actually Mark
