- 0:01Jennifer Davis: Welcome to The Best of Redmond.
- 0:03Jennifer Davis: I'm Jennifer Davis
- 0:04Dan Schulz: And I'm Dan Schultz, and this is Redmond's twice weekly newsletter and podcast about all of the amazing things happening right here in Redmond for the next seven days.
- 0:15Dan Schulz: Jennifer, what is all this news I keep hearing about Redlink?
- 0:20Jennifer Davis: Well, Redmond's free Redlink Rideshare service just expanded, and that means more people can use it to get around without driving.
- 0:29Jennifer Davis: The new service area reaches the Redmond Community Center at Marymoor Village, the Woodbridge neighborhood, and parts of Education Hill up to Northeast 104th Street, including Hartman Park and the Redmond Pool.
- 0:43Jennifer Davis: The city also started a shared parking program on Education Hill, with limited spaces at Redmond Assembly of God.
- 0:51Jennifer Davis: Redlink is free and connects riders to light rail, businesses, and other local stops, so check the app before you go and see if your next car trip can be skipped.
- 1:01Dan Schulz: What do you think Education Hill means?
- 1:04Dan Schulz: I've always heard
- 1:05Jennifer Davis: It's literally cause there's lots of schools up there
- 1:09Dan Schulz: Downtown Redmond turns into one big art walk on Thursday, September seventeenth from four to seven PM.
- 1:16Dan Schulz: The action starts at Downtown Park, then spreads through participating businesses around downtown.
- 1:22Dan Schulz: There'll be temporary public art, live painting, poetry, and a salsa performance, plus a bunch of local businesses getting in on it.
- 1:31Dan Schulz: It's free, and you don't need to know anything about art to have a good time.
- 1:35Dan Schulz: Start at Downtown Park, grab the event map, then wander wherever something catches your eye.
- 1:42Dan Schulz: Give yourself at least an hour because there's more than one stop worth making
- 1:48Jennifer Davis: The Redmond Saturday Market is back on Saturday, September 19th from 9:00 to 2:00.
- 1:55Jennifer Davis: It's the weekly market with local vendors, food, and the usual Saturday morning wandering around, but there's also a donation drive happening this week.
- 2:04Jennifer Davis: The September 19th market is one of four September dates collecting school supplies and cat food for local needs.
- 2:13Jennifer Davis: So you can grab something for breakfast, shop for a few things, and toss some supplies into the donation effort while you're there.
- 2:21Jennifer Davis: Bring a reusable bag, and don't wait until the last hour if you want the full selection
- 2:28Dan Schulz: Arts in the Park takes over Redmond Downtown Park on Saturday, September 19th from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
- 2:34Dan Schulz: You'll get live music, local performers, Eastside Made vendors, some businesses, and family-friendly activities all in one spot.
- 2:43Dan Schulz: It's free, so this is an easy one if you wanna get out of the house without turning it into a whole expensive production.
- 2:50Dan Schulz: Bring the kids, grab something to eat nearby, and wander through the artisan booths while the music's going
- 3:00Jennifer Davis: Got a dog who thinks every walk is an event?
- 3:04Dan Schulz: I do.
- 3:05Dan Schulz: It's very annoying, Jennifer, to have such a dog
- 3:09Jennifer Davis: well, maybe she wants to go to the Poker Pup Crawl.
- 3:12Jennifer Davis: It runs Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th around downtown Redmond, with the big tailgate finale on Sunday from 3:00 to 5:00 at Flatstick Pub.
- 3:23Jennifer Davis: Dogs and their humans visit participating businesses, collect poker cards, then bring their best hand to the final party for prizes and Seahawks football.
- 3:35Jennifer Davis: Participating stops include Post Doc Brewing, Eastside Dog and Cats Too, Salt and Straw, Brick and Mortar Books, and Flatstick.
- 3:44Jennifer Davis: So keep your dog leashed and vaccinated, and check the crawl details before heading out
- 3:52Dan Schulz: Soul Food Coffee House has its monthly poetry night Thursday, September 17th at 6:00 PM, and this one lines up with the Downtown Redmond Art Walk we just talked about.
- 4:02Dan Schulz: Benjamin Schmidt and Raya Molina are the featured readers, followed by open mic.
- 4:08Dan Schulz: The whole thing is free and takes place at Soul Food Coffee House.
- 4:12Dan Schulz: They've been doing this since 2006, so this isn't some brand-new open mic that may or may not happen.
- 4:18Dan Schulz: If you've never checked it out, Thursday is an easy night to wander in, hear a few poems, and see what the local writers are up to.
- 4:29Jennifer Davis: Now here's something most homeowners don't think about.
- 4:32Jennifer Davis: You could have a water leak right now and not even know it.
- 4:37Jennifer Davis: Underground leaks don't show up like a burst pipe.
- 4:40Jennifer Davis: There's no water on the floor.
- 4:41Jennifer Davis: Your water bill just quietly creeps up month after month until one day you're paying double and wondering what the heck happened.
- 4:50Jennifer Davis: Simply Leak Detection finds those leaks without tearing up your yard.
- 4:55Jennifer Davis: They use non-invasive tech to pinpoint exactly where the problem is.
- 4:59Jennifer Davis: Over 300 5-star reviews on Google.
- 5:03Jennifer Davis: They cover the Holy Side, Redmond, Kirkland, Bellevue, all of it.
- 5:07Jennifer Davis: So if your water bill's been climbing or your meter's spinning when nothing is running, then give Lincoln and his team a call at 253-800-1412 or visit them at simplyleakdetection.biz.
- 5:26Jennifer Davis: That message brought to you by Simply Leak Detection.
- 5:32Jennifer Davis: Welcoming Week continues on Wednesday, September 16th with Stories We Share: The Courage to Connect from 5:00 to 7:00 at the Together Center.
- 5:43Jennifer Davis: The evening is built around local stories and conversations about what connects people and how we make a community feel welcoming.
- 5:52Jennifer Davis: It's not a concert or a kids' activity, so think more conversation and community than entertainment.
- 5:58Jennifer Davis: But if you're curious about the people who make up Redmond, this is a good one.
- 6:03Jennifer Davis: Show up ready to listen and maybe talk to somebody you don't already know
- 6:10Dan Schulz: Sama Cellars is doing a taste and talk called Que Syrah, Syrah Sunday, September 20th from 3:00 to 4:30.
- 6:20Dan Schulz: It's a guided Syrah tasting with a certified sommelier, so this is more than just sitting down and drinking whatever somebody pours in front of you.
- 6:29Dan Schulz: Tickets are $25 with complimentary admission for club members.
- 6:33Dan Schulz: Now, if you're into wine but don't really know what you're tasting beyond the, "Yep, that's red," this is probably a useful afternoon.
- 6:42Dan Schulz: So grab a spot ahead of time because these tastings tend to fill up pretty quick
- 6:49Jennifer Davis: There's a bike ride Thursday, September 17th, starting at Dote Coffee at Redmond Technology Station and heading towards Quay Maria Yemeni Coffee.
- 7:00Jennifer Davis: Riders meet at 5:00 PM with the ride leaving at five-thirty, and the focus is on Redmond's bike lanes and infrastructure.
- 7:08Jennifer Davis: So you're getting a ride and a little local transportation nerdiness at the same time.
- 7:14Jennifer Davis: If you've ever wondered why a bike lane was put where it was or what the city is trying to connect next, this could be a fun way to learn.
- 7:22Jennifer Davis: Bring your bike, helmet, and lights and be ready to roll Okay, it's time for the Redmond History Minute, where we share an interesting piece of history, trivia, or tidbit about life in and around Redmond.
- 7:38Jennifer Davis: So the question today is: Why was Education Hill originally known as Poverty Hill?
- 7:46Jennifer Davis: Was it A, there weren't enough schools?
- 7:50Dan Schulz: Oh my God, I lucked into this.
- 7:53Dan Schulz: This is awesome
- 7:54Jennifer Davis: Was it B, the area lacked a water supply?
- 7:58Jennifer Davis: C, it had poor farmland?
- 8:00Jennifer Davis: Or D, it was outside of Redmond's city limits?
- 8:05Jennifer Davis: And your time starts now
- 8:07Dan Schulz: A, final answer, there weren't enough schools.
- 8:10Dan Schulz: Boom, bam, how do you like me now?
- 8:14Dan Schulz: Thank you
- 8:16Jennifer Davis: Oh no, you're not right this time, Dan.
- 8:18Jennifer Davis: Unfortunately, you missed again
- 8:21Dan Schulz: You said it five minutes ago.
- 8:23Dan Schulz: What are you talking about?
- 8:24Dan Schulz: There weren't a lot of schools up there.
- 8:27Dan Schulz: Wait, I wanna do over.
- 8:28Jennifer Davis: Sorry, you said final answer.
- 8:30Jennifer Davis: The answer is actually B: the area lacked a water supply.
- 8:33Jennifer Davis: Education Hill is one of Redmond's oldest neighborhoods, but it wasn't always called Education Hill.
- 8:40Jennifer Davis: The area was formerly known as Poverty Hill because of the lack of a water supply.
- 8:46Jennifer Davis: It was eventually annexed by Redmond in the 1950s and got the Education Hill name because of the number of schools on it.
- 8:53Jennifer Davis: Today, it's known for its tree-lined streets and connection to trails like the Power Line Trail
- 9:07Dan Schulz: Okay, here's a fun one.
- 9:08Dan Schulz: We've been hearing that a craft and maker space could be looking at a spot somewhere around downtown Redmond.
- 9:14Dan Schulz: Think sewing machines, pottery, woodworking classes, and a place where you can start a project without having to turn your garage into a full-blown arts and craft workshop.
- 9:25Dan Schulz: Now, we don't know the business, we don't know the location, and we don't know if it's even happening at all.
- 9:30Dan Schulz: That's why it's a rumor.
- 9:32Dan Schulz: But would you actually use a place like that here in Redmond?
- 9:36Dan Schulz: If you've got a guess or have heard something at all about this rumor, head on over to our Facebook page at facebook.com/bestofredmond and drop it in the Redmond Rumor Mill Guesses post.
- 9:47Dan Schulz: And while you're there, find the Your Picks post.
- 9:50Dan Schulz: Speaking of arts and crafts, we would love to know what you think is the best craft store in Redmond
- 9:58Jennifer Davis: If you've enjoyed this podcast, you're gonna love our companion newsletter.
- 10:03Jennifer Davis: Find it at bestofredmond.com and we'll see you in the next one
