- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Well hey Ahara Jihwit Konasoto I hope that you're doing well Tomegama I'm good Garf Mahad So today we're gonna be learning about two things The first thing is how to conjugate the verb to be and we're gonna learn that so that we can then describe emotions or our emotional states.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: An will to re are you ready?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Well let's go.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: In Irish there are two forms of the verb to be.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: This is something I'm told that is in Spanish, it is not in English, so it may take some getting used to, but for today's purposes, we're just gonna learn about one form.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: This form is a simple conjugation.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: In Irish, conjugation doesn't often change from person to person.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: That means that the verb is gonna be the same regardless of who's doing the action, but please note that this is not true for all tenses and it is not true for all dialects.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: It's a general guideline.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The plus is that as a learner, we really only need to learn one form, and then just the different pronouns.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: So the form for this version of the verb to be is taw, which you've already heard in the last episode.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Tall that is the present tense conjugation of the verb to be, which will not change.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: But what will change is the pronoun of the person who's tawing.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: So the pronoun for me or I is me.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Tall may I am tall may for you it's tall too.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And I just want to add really quick that in Irish there is no formal and informal version of you.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: If you've not learned another language, then disregard what I just said.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: So tall me, I am tall to you are tall shay he is Ta is Tall Mwid we are.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: It can also be ta shin Ta shiv which would be Yal So plural you and tall shi are These pronouns are used in most conjugations, but again not all of them, but for your purpose as a learner, just pretend that they are, and that's another thing to keep in your pocket I may You two He She We Midge or Shin Yal Shiv and They Sheed Now you may have noticed that in Irish the taw is coming before the May or the two, which is not like English at all.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: In Irish a very simple sentence structure is the verb first in the sentence, followed by the pronoun, followed by other things.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: So in Irish, when we say I am, it's really am I tall may but it's not asking a question.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Tall may I am.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Now, as I mentioned before, there are two versions of the verb to be.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: The version that we're talking about now, which is just be, is often used for temporary states.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: It can also be used for descriptions.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: In Irish, emotions are temporary.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: They don't define who you are.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: And in fact, the structure in Irish is tall, and then you're gonna specify the emotion, and then you're gonna say it is on you, or it is on somebody else.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: So emotion in Irish is on you.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Sadness is on me.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: This sort of structure ta something on something or ta something and another preposition is very common in Irish, and so it's worth it to get comfortable with it and to practice it.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: So for our purposes today, tall the emotion that is on you and then Urim Tal emotion Urum The emotion is on me.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: And what are those emotions?
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: We have a hus happiness.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I'm happy, you would say.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Tawas Urim there is happiness on me.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: If you're sad, tabron orum.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: There's sadness on me.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Tabron Urim If you're sick, ta tinis orum Ta Tinis Urim Another way to say you're tired Tatursha Urim Tatarsa Urim, I'm tired.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Tiredness is on me.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Ta eglorum there's fear on me, I'm afraid.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: And if you want to specify what you are afraid of, you would then use riv.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So taglorum riv maldri There is fear on me before dogs.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: That's just how the structure is.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: I'm afraid of dogs.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Now another way you can describe your state is one that we talked about in the last episode, which is just in response to how are you?
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Talme Gama, remember Tomegama, I'm good.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Tomegadonna bad Tolme Eras Great Amazing Tometau Fine Tom Kertgalor, I'm alright.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: Tometers, I'm tired.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: You could also say Tal Me Gabra, I'm lovely.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Tom Bronach, I'm sad.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Tome tin, I'm sick.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Tome Geentah, I'm wonderful.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: You could say Tal Me Ermeska, which means I am drunk.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: Tome Erbish, I am excited.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Tal Me Ermida, I am furious.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And so in both of these forms where we use tall, the emotion is temporary.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: It is subject to change.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Emotions can be on you they can also be put on someone.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: They can come on someone, and of course they can be on someone.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: Things can be at people.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: You don't really need to know at this moment all the different ways things can be at on with about someone, but it's worth it to be aware of it.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Particularly because we are going to be learning possession soon, and possession makes use of this concept.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: But I think that's all I'm gonna say today about this topic.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: The verb to be and how to express how you're feeling.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: So I hope you practice.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: I would like to mention that one way you can practice if you don't have a speaking partner, is to keep a diary.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: It's something that I've done for several years in Irish, and it is really interesting to go back and read some of your first entries, and you can really see your progress.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: But it's a great way to think spontaneously.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: And again, I know right now you may not have a lot to say, but it's worth saying anyway.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: So that's it from me today.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: Slan Gafal Ahara.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Goodbye for now, friend, and see you next time.
