- 0:00Hi everyone, Susan Tran here for Women's Wednesday
- 0:11on DC News Now and we are talking Back to School
- 0:15with Portia Moore, Portia Moore Thomas, I'm so
- 0:19sorry, our resident early child development specialist.
- 0:24Hi Portia. Hi. I cannot believe we're at the
- 0:27end of July and already talking about Back to
- 0:31School and when you said that this is a perfect
- 0:33time, I'm thinking no way. And now everything
- 0:37in the news, on the radio, is talking about back
- 0:41to school. So you were right. And we were just
- 0:43talking about camps, right, the last time I was
- 0:45here. Right, and that just felt like so not too
- 0:49long ago. So why is it important that at the
- 0:52end of July we're already preparing for back
- 0:56to school times? Exactly. It seems like it's
- 0:59so far, but you don't want to scramble last minute.
- 1:02And as I'm a parent with owning a business and,
- 1:05you know, there's so many things to navigate
- 1:07with motherhood and working and parenthood, if
- 1:10your father also, and we just make sure we're
- 1:12preparing not like a week in advance, but now.
- 1:15So we're just getting all those to do's and checklists
- 1:17done and we're not stressed out. Right, because
- 1:20we just did summer, right? They've been at camp,
- 1:23they've been swimming, making friends, having
- 1:25all of this free time. So how do we get them
- 1:29to... Start this transition. It's a lot One thing
- 1:34the parents have to transition to because they've
- 1:36been home possibly more if they're working parents
- 1:39The later camp times are different because I
- 1:42know my child's school starts at 8 a .m She has
- 1:44to be there by for campus like 9 or 10 so we
- 1:46can like trickle in like slowly But one thing
- 1:49is to set those bedtimes And then don't just
- 1:53like hey a start transition because like last
- 1:55night we had dinner at 8 p .m Which is their
- 1:58bedtime? Like 738 and so it's like set those
- 2:02routine times like Getting ready for nighttime
- 2:06dinner all those things start to like creep them
- 2:09up like 15 to 20 minutes every two or three days
- 2:13So that when it gets to that the day before or
- 2:15the week before school, it's not just like oh
- 2:17You've been going to bed at 10 now all of a sudden
- 2:19at 7 7 30 so that's one thing for bedtimes and
- 2:22it's not just the bedtimes but like Structure
- 2:26things structure. So even in the morning, right?
- 2:29Like sometimes they can sleep in you know Yes,
- 2:34I want to sleep in so especially for camp so
- 2:36but now with school you have to catch that bus
- 2:38or you have to be in that carpool line So to
- 2:40make sure that okay if I believe that house is
- 2:42730 What time are they waking up and honestly
- 2:45not just have they been waking up at 7 7 30?
- 2:47You know, but now you need to make up 6 or 6
- 2:4930 Don't do it the night before. Let's creep
- 2:52into, let's slowly transition until that wake
- 2:54up time. So is it this process like a 10, 15
- 2:58minute every day or a couple of days and just...
- 3:02Couple of days. Because the parents need to ease
- 3:04in also. We've been sleeping a little bit also.
- 3:08So every couple of days, just so that it's an
- 3:11easier transition. And sometimes travel, because
- 3:14people are still traveling. And I do get that.
- 3:16But when you return, try your best to transition
- 3:19the wake up times, the going to sleep times,
- 3:22the routines as in dinner times, pajamas, teeth
- 3:26brushing, face washing, all those things. Just
- 3:29creep a little bit earlier so that your ideal
- 3:31time is right at that day or two days before
- 3:34school starts. OK, and so when we're talking
- 3:37about preparations how do you get them from free
- 3:40spirit it's been amazing during the summer and
- 3:43then now i have to kind of think about you know
- 3:46going back to school and getting those emotional
- 3:51anxieties just on par with where we need to be
- 3:55so you know it's so much anxiety i was thinking
- 3:58about even for for us for adults right if we
- 4:01have a new restaurant we're going to What do
- 4:03we do? Look at the menu, look at the reviews,
- 4:05look at the pictures. So it's preparing the child
- 4:07of what to expect. All right. So the playground,
- 4:10you can show them like if it's a new playground,
- 4:12a new school they're going to what the playground
- 4:13will look like. Maybe even going to the school
- 4:16to see if you can do a walk around to see where
- 4:18their classroom is going to be. I know they had
- 4:19back to school night and orientation before,
- 4:22but doing those things one on one, because even
- 4:24at orientation, it's all these kids and all these
- 4:27parents. And so if you're able to just go with
- 4:29your child, it's a little bit easier to like,
- 4:31hey, this is This is your school. This is your
- 4:33classroom. It can be only five minutes. Yeah,
- 4:35but how what about like just the emotions of
- 4:38being free -spirited and then now we have to
- 4:40be back to strong? Oh, yeah, have them ask them.
- 4:42How are you feeling about school? Get those questions
- 4:45out so that they have anxiety over but just give
- 4:48them like a familiar of Being familiar to what
- 4:53they're going to so ask some questions. It's
- 4:55like hey, how do you feel? What are you excited
- 4:58about for the school year? And actually, they
- 5:00can picture themselves in their classroom. And
- 5:02so those anxiety and those worries kind of. Ease
- 5:05away as you talk about it more with a parent
- 5:08or even if you have a cousin or brother or maybe
- 5:12or a sibling or maybe someone their same age
- 5:15or around, you know, say, hey, like I went to
- 5:18that classroom last year or I was in that teacher's
- 5:20classroom last year. It's going to be totally
- 5:22OK. And so as you're more familiar with things,
- 5:25I know for me, and like I said, as restaurants,
- 5:27the anxiety kind of like loosens and I feel better.
- 5:30And what about just kind of getting them in the
- 5:33right frame of mind? and adjusting, especially
- 5:37if you have a child who has ADHD and you need
- 5:40to kind of get them ready for, instead of, you
- 5:44know, kind of free roaming for days on end to
- 5:48now we have structured time. I know, it's talking
- 5:51about it. You know, talking about it all the
- 5:53time. What school's gonna look like, what the
- 5:55time is gonna look like. A lot of... School can
- 5:59be overwhelming, camp can be overwhelming, transitions
- 6:03can be overwhelming. So the more we talk about
- 6:05it and we just sit down and listen to our children,
- 6:08we can read books about it also. There's so many
- 6:10books about start of kindergarten, start of a
- 6:13new school, meeting new friends. There's so many
- 6:16groups that do meet over the summer and before.
- 6:19I know there's what's at groups and group meet
- 6:21groups within your school, within your class.
- 6:25And so you can link up with parents and say,
- 6:26hey, can my child link up with your child? so
- 6:28they have a familiar face that they know before
- 6:30school starts. And so all those things to set
- 6:33up for success for the school year. You don't
- 6:37want your child to be nervous and they don't
- 6:39know anyone. They don't know the school. They
- 6:42don't know the systems in place. Even for carpool.
- 6:45I know for me, I'm so anxious. The first day
- 6:48I'm like, where do I go? Where does the car go?
- 6:49I've never done carpool, right? And so now, with
- 6:53those WhatsApp groups, you can even ask if it's
- 6:55a new school. Hey, how does carpool work? Where
- 6:58should we pool in? OK, we're going to hold that
- 7:00thought and come back. You're watching Women's
- 7:02Wednesday. Stay with us. Welcome back to Women's
- 7:07Wednesday. I'm Susan Tran and we have a Portia
- 7:09Moore Thomas joining us, our child development
- 7:13specialist and we're talking about back to school
- 7:16and a big concern, kind of filled with a bit
- 7:20of anxiety too, is sending off your child to
- 7:24kindergarten for the first time. What do we do?
- 7:29It's anxious -ridden for parents and probably
- 7:31for a child as well. Yes, especially if they
- 7:34came from home. Even daycare centers, that ratio
- 7:37is lower. They have that more one -on -one time.
- 7:40Having them go independently to the bathroom
- 7:43is so important. It's not just you doing it for
- 7:47them, it's showing them how to do it and helping
- 7:50them do it. So pulling down their pants, sitting
- 7:53on the potty, right, correctly so they're not
- 7:55peeing on their clothes, wiping themselves is
- 7:58so, so important for number one and number two,
- 8:01and not doing it for them, showing them how to
- 8:03do it, right? Some people take two balloons with
- 8:05wiping, which is, I mean, it's fun. It's engaging,
- 8:09but also it shows - shows them how to clean themselves,
- 8:11pull your pants up, flush the toilet, and wash
- 8:13your hands. And not just a quick wash your hands,
- 8:15you're using soap, using front, back, all the
- 8:17things, right? So steps to potty training, or
- 8:20not potty training, because they're already potty
- 8:22trained, but steps to actually going potty, so
- 8:24they're confident and independent in the bathroom.
- 8:27Also, opening book bags. Opening lunch boxes
- 8:30you sometimes that little clip to open the lunch
- 8:32box is difficult, right? And so you want to teach
- 8:34them how to use those fine motor that thumb to
- 8:37push up that tab where their Spoon is gonna be
- 8:41their paper towers are gonna be so you want to
- 8:43make sure that you show them and help them do
- 8:46these things Don't do them for it because you
- 8:48won't be there in their classroom or lunch or
- 8:49lunch room, right? So you want to make sure that
- 8:52you help them? And you're preparing them for
- 8:55the success of being kind of independent for
- 8:58perhaps the first time. What about the question
- 9:01of dry runs? Do you go through the whole routine?
- 9:07Is too many times a possibility? Is there once,
- 9:12twice? What is it? Not at all. Now that let's
- 9:15say you're eating lunch somewhere, have them
- 9:17open up the lunchbox. If they're going potty,
- 9:20of course you're there, but you step outside.
- 9:22You know, hey, do you need some help? You peek
- 9:24in and make sure what they're doing is correct.
- 9:26But right now you can start. There's never too
- 9:29many times for those daily tasks that life that
- 9:32lasts a lifetime. So you can always do those
- 9:34tasks. OK. And in terms of dry runs to the school
- 9:39drop off, pick up. Is that a good thing? It's
- 9:44a great thing. My daughter, when she started
- 9:45kindergarten, because she was at the preschool
- 9:47for four or five years, right? It's a transition
- 9:49for me too. We went to the school about like
- 9:51five or six times like, hey, this is your school.
- 9:53Look at the front of it. It's so much fun. We
- 9:55went to the orientation. Again, it's very overwhelming.
- 9:58We didn't do a walkthrough without the orientation.
- 10:01So it was a lot of students. My daughter is also
- 10:03very social. But if you have someone like you
- 10:06said, ADHD or someone that a lot of people. are
- 10:08overwhelmed, contact the school administration.
- 10:11See if you can just visit. Two three minutes
- 10:14to do a walk through the school Where is the
- 10:16classroom at where they put their book bag their
- 10:19coat when it becomes cold outside? Where they'll
- 10:22enter their door because sometimes kindergarten
- 10:25is a different door than the main door because
- 10:26the main door is just like so many kids And also
- 10:30for you like I talked before a carpool, you know
- 10:32as parents You don't want to be nervous and the
- 10:35line is backed up. You don't know what you're
- 10:37doing So see what you need to do for carpool
- 10:39and maybe like when they walk you through it.
- 10:41You kind of run through it by yourself How do
- 10:43you talk to your child about it? You know, especially
- 10:47if they might be a little nervous already. You
- 10:49don't want to amp that up. But how do you have
- 10:53the conversation? Accept that they're going to
- 10:55be nervous and don't talk them out of nervous.
- 10:58And I tell my teachers all the time at their
- 11:00preschool, it's OK to feel nervous. Kids need
- 11:03to feel that emotion. Adults need to feel that
- 11:06emotion, right? It's how do we get through it?
- 11:08Breathe in, breathe out, and let's picture your
- 11:11school day. Let's picture how the first day is
- 11:13gonna go, how the first six weeks are gonna go,
- 11:16how the holidays are gonna go. You wanna make
- 11:19sure that they know. You're going to be there
- 11:21from seven to two or eight to three or nine to
- 11:25four. The timing, hey, mommy is going to pick
- 11:27you up. You're going to take the bus or you're
- 11:29going to walk home. Maybe even for that, that
- 11:32first day you walk to where the bus stop is going
- 11:34to be. You walk to school to see how far it's
- 11:37gonna be. You drive them to see what the drive
- 11:40is gonna look like. So all those things to help
- 11:42those nerves, because mommies and daddies are
- 11:45nervous too. It's like their first day at a new
- 11:47school. If you've been home with them or you've
- 11:49been at a daycare for three or four or five years,
- 11:53it's nervous also to accept those nerves and
- 11:55just help them understand what they'll be doing.
- 11:58Are there questions that you should be asking
- 12:01them or? conversation starters. Yes. What do
- 12:05you want to learn? So much fun. So they could
- 12:07be like, I don't know. Maybe I want to learn
- 12:09this and this. Because when you first go to school
- 12:12with a new teacher and so many new friends, it's
- 12:15exciting. And some people, I know my daughter
- 12:17one time was like, I want to learn about unicorns.
- 12:19I'm like, well, maybe they'll teach about unicorns.
- 12:20You know and don't shut them down if they want
- 12:23to learn about unicorns or they want to learn
- 12:25about history Whatever they want to do. Oh my
- 12:27goodness gracious. That is so exciting Let's
- 12:29let's look a unicorn book right now, right? So
- 12:31they get excited about what? They may do in the
- 12:35future and their brain goes wild at that age
- 12:38So okay in for some parents this will be the
- 12:41first time they're kind of not together And they're
- 12:45separated And what about how to get them to tell
- 12:49you about their day without just the common response
- 12:53of, oh, it was good? Yeah, like, how was your
- 12:55day? And they're like, good. Right, because they're
- 12:57five or six or whatever. And when people ask
- 12:59about how my day, I'm like, it was OK. Work was
- 13:01work. But a good thing is, what was the favorite
- 13:03part of your day? And like, OK, sometimes they
- 13:06say PE or sometimes they say lunch. When they
- 13:09say lunch, I was like, oh, what did your friend
- 13:10eat today? Not what you ate. I know what you
- 13:14ate. Well, hopefully you ate all your food. What
- 13:17did your friend eat today? Or how did you help
- 13:19someone today? That's such a great question because
- 13:22one thing, it's giving back and they understand
- 13:24that, hey, mommy and daddy wants you to help
- 13:27someone today. Or maybe even they don't even
- 13:30think about like, hey, how did I help someone?
- 13:32And it builds their confidence to be like, I
- 13:34was a good friend. And already... You're speaking
- 13:37confidence into them, and they're eager to share
- 13:40about their day. You can say, what did your teacher
- 13:43help you with today? Also, my teacher actually
- 13:46helped me how to put my book away or how to learn
- 13:51this. You can ask them what their favorite subject
- 13:55is. My daughter loves math. And I'll say, well,
- 13:57did you learn about addition today? So just build
- 13:59on top of what they learned also. All right.
- 14:02We'll be right back. You're watching Women's
- 14:03Wednesday. Welcome back to Women's Wednesday.
- 14:08I'm Susan Tran. We are already talking about
- 14:10Back to School with the Portia, Maura Thomas.
- 14:13And I couldn't believe it, but it is happening.
- 14:16And not only do we have to get the kids prepared,
- 14:19we got to get the parents prepared as well. It's
- 14:23a pretty long to -do list. It's a long to -do
- 14:25list. And it's not just about ordering all the
- 14:28things. You know, I have Walmart. You have, I
- 14:30used to go to Staples when I was younger, get
- 14:32the list. You have Target. You have Amazon you
- 14:35can order from. It's more about building that
- 14:37confidence in your child and you also, of course.
- 14:40And it's also, like I said, going through the
- 14:43carpool line. It's the family calendar also.
- 14:45I know there's now the new technology that the
- 14:47family calendar sits on the top of your, wherever
- 14:51you want in your workplace, on the wall, on your
- 14:54island of the... The kitchen and it says like
- 14:58everything that you have to do for that day You
- 15:00want to put in days off that they have early
- 15:03releases my school my child school ends at 2
- 15:06p .m Make sure you have those in the calendar
- 15:08after school activities. They're here. You want
- 15:10to sign up for them? There's some deadlines that
- 15:12are coming make sure you add those to the calendar
- 15:14also and some days little tip that if they have
- 15:18let's say Gymnastics or karate after school.
- 15:21I make sure I either pack those extra karate
- 15:24or gymnastic clothes in my car or in their book
- 15:27bag. So I'm not running home to get them. So
- 15:29just FYI, this little tip. We do extras or the
- 15:33one that they need? The one that they need. OK.
- 15:35Yes. Because you want to make sure that, hey,
- 15:37I know they're doing karate today. Look at the
- 15:39calendar. I know they're doing karate today.
- 15:40Here's a karate outfit. I'm going to give it
- 15:41to them for them to change after school so they
- 15:44get in the car and we can go to karate. Bring
- 15:47snacks. Also, I have like a snack compartment
- 15:49in the back of my car because they are hungry
- 15:51after school and I don't want any meltdowns.
- 15:53And so while I'm asking you what's your favorite
- 15:54part of school or how did you help someone? I
- 15:56don't want like, oh, I'm hungry. Leave me alone.
- 15:58You know, they're eating and they're talking.
- 16:00And so it's like that conversation, which is
- 16:02that's a lot of planning. It's a lot of planning.
- 16:05Yes. So the calendar helps in school supplies.
- 16:11School supplies, I mean, get the list. I would
- 16:13order it now. Some schools also, there's so many
- 16:17things. I mean, we had two boxes last year for
- 16:19Bell's first day at kindergarten. How do you
- 16:22afford that? Well, it was a lot of money. Yeah,
- 16:25it was a lot. But there's some actual programs
- 16:28that if you need back to school items and you
- 16:30can't afford it, look for the programs churches
- 16:32offer them. Schools offer them to go and see
- 16:35what back to school items you need. And if they
- 16:38have them, if you cannot afford them, because
- 16:39they are very expensive and it's a lot. But do
- 16:42it now so that when. the time comes, sometimes
- 16:45orientation or the week before you can drop off
- 16:48the items. So not carrying all this stuff in
- 16:51the first day. Right. Which can be a lot. Yeah.
- 16:54And those are all of the things that they have
- 16:56to physically bring to school or get physically
- 16:59bring to school. There's things like headphones,
- 17:01markers, tissues, toilet paper, not toilet paper,
- 17:04but sometimes toilet paper, tissue paper, nap
- 17:06mats for kindergarten. Or if you're going to
- 17:08pre K for all the things they have. Okay. All
- 17:11right. Go through the list. And you also had
- 17:14this whole emergency contacts. Physicals. Okay.
- 17:18My goodness. Scheduled appointments right now
- 17:20because it's going to be the rush for parents.
- 17:22It doesn't matter if you play sports or not.
- 17:24You have to have an updated physical. Oh. Yes.
- 17:27At the school. Okay. So you make sure you get
- 17:29those done. All right. And then how do you get
- 17:32parents ready? From if they have been spending
- 17:35a whole lot of time with their parent their child
- 17:37during the summer and it's been so much fun And
- 17:39now well even traveling with them also One -on
- 17:43-one time with them all the time. You got to
- 17:46mentally prepare. You got to rip off that band
- 17:47-aid And I tell parents all the time I think
- 17:50I'm a little bit immune to it because with owning
- 17:52the preschools I'm holding parents hand all the
- 17:55time like oh my goodness my child's going DCPS
- 17:58starts at 3 and so my child's going to you know
- 18:00DCPS at 3 I can't walk inside the class And I'm
- 18:04just like, meet that teacher. Meet the teacher.
- 18:06Get to know the teacher. Because once you feel
- 18:09comfortable with where your child is at, it's
- 18:12like their second home. And it's nothing better
- 18:15than being confident and really... Enjoying to
- 18:19see enjoying seeing your child grow and how that
- 18:22teachers are helping them grow and then at that
- 18:24point of time You're like, you know what? They're
- 18:25better. They're in better hands than I am You
- 18:27know cuz not everyone could be a teacher and
- 18:29so you want to make sure your child is learning
- 18:30and growing and when you have that amazing teacher
- 18:32Those nervous those nervous feelings go away
- 18:35and you're like, you know what? I'll see them
- 18:36after school Okay, just gotta rip off that band
- 18:39-aid and trust that teacher. Is there a huge
- 18:42list that You've put together for yourself to
- 18:46just get Ready for the school year. Yeah. Yes.
- 18:49Well, definitely those bedtimes Like I said,
- 18:52we were eating dinner eight o 'clock tomorrow
- 18:53last night. We can't be doing that August 23rd.
- 18:58The first day of school is August 24th, right?
- 19:00So it you know every two days three days 15 20
- 19:03minutes before bedtime ordering the class materials.
- 19:06I already did it I'm a little bit pre -organized.
- 19:09Because you've been doing it. I've been doing
- 19:12it a long time. Exactly. Immunizations, get those
- 19:14physicals. We already scheduled hours so that
- 19:15they have them. And then also, I know you want
- 19:18to dive in IEPs eventually. If you notice any
- 19:22resources that your child can get, speech, there's
- 19:26physical therapy, there is fine motor, there's
- 19:29occupational therapy, there's behavior therapy.
- 19:31If those things that you notice, talk to the
- 19:34teacher. Have them assess them because early
- 19:36intervention is key and resources, resources,
- 19:39resources. That is such a huge conversation that
- 19:42we're gonna have to do a whole segment on. And
- 19:45so I'm glad that you're at least dipping our
- 19:48toes into the conversation. It's on the checklist.
- 19:50I know you got to be ready for all of this. And
- 19:53finally one parent was asking what about all
- 19:56of the things like you know in the morning they
- 19:59have to rush out the door to catch the bus and
- 20:01everything but they want to change their clothes
- 20:04again they want to do their hair again um they're
- 20:08slow at breakfast how do we motivate so one thing
- 20:11what a lot of if you don't have uniforms By the
- 20:14way, speaking of uniforms and the checklist,
- 20:16they do have like a uniform swap at the private
- 20:18school. So I meant to say that. So look at your
- 20:20private school and see if you do a uniform swap,
- 20:21which saves some money on uniforms. But with
- 20:23running the door, there's this, there's like
- 20:26a hanging thing that has Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 20:28Thursday, Friday. They can pick out their clothes
- 20:30for the whole entire week, which is very nice.
- 20:31You put in whatever they're wearing in each little
- 20:34compartment. And so they put on their clothes,
- 20:36they wash their face, they brush their teeth.
- 20:38We like to do baths or showers the night before.
- 20:41And making a hearty breakfast is so important,
- 20:44making sure those brains are fueled, they're
- 20:46not tired, and so they're ready for the day,
- 20:48helps with anxiety also, and not rushing out
- 20:51the door. Let's take it slow because rushing
- 20:54gives me anxiety. All right, we gotta plan it
- 20:57all out and wish every parent good luck. You're
- 21:00watching Women's Wednesday. Have a great one.
