- 0:12Hello friends and a happy Friday to you.
- 0:16Well done on making it to the end of another week.
- 0:19And this is a very special Friday because it is the 22nd of
- 0:24September. So we get to say happy birthday
- 0:26to Bilbo and Frodo Baggins. Yes, those two hobbits from the
- 0:32fictional world and imagination of JRR Tolkien.
- 0:36This is their birthday. And for the last 40-5 years,
- 0:39September 22nd has also been Hobbit Day as so many people
- 0:44around the world celebrate these much beloved characters and the
- 0:48wonderful, the wonderful creature of The Hobbit, this
- 0:51little quiet gentle soul that in many ways the the mind of
- 0:56Tolkien was trying to communicate the gospel story and
- 1:00and this fight between good and evil and God and and Satan and
- 1:05the world. All of these incredible
- 1:07theological themes and the small servant hearted Christian
- 1:13represented in The Hobbit, that's you and me.
- 1:15We are hobbits in this great story of God's interaction in
- 1:20the world. So I think it's a wonderful day
- 1:22to celebrate. So you should eat 6 meals today,
- 1:25or at least have a second breakfast.
- 1:27Or or be kind to your friends, or take off your shoes and go
- 1:31for a walk outside. Or whatever you can do to to
- 1:34celebrate the quiet, gentle way of being in this world that was
- 1:38so beautifully typified. In this race of being the
- 1:41hobbits. That is a whole lot of
- 1:44hobbitness, and I wish you a very happy Hobbit Day.
- 1:47And today we will continue to read a Psalm on a Friday, which
- 1:52is what we do. And today we will read another
- 1:55song, a Psalm of Asaf. And this is another lament Psalm
- 1:59as Israel cries out for rescue from their neighbors.
- 2:04To join me, friend, as you and I read together, Psalm 83.
- 2:20Oh God, do not be silent. Do not be deaf.
- 2:24Do not be quiet. Oh God, don't you hear the
- 2:28uproar of your enemies? Don't you see that your arrogant
- 2:32enemies are rising up? They devise crafty schemes
- 2:37against your people. They conspire against your
- 2:41precious ones. Come, they say, let us wipe out
- 2:45Israel as a nation. We will destroy the very memory
- 2:49of its existence. Yes, this was their unanimous
- 2:53decision. They signed a treaty as allies
- 2:57against you, these Edomites and Ishmaelites, Moabites and
- 3:02Hagrites, Gebalites and Ammonites and Amalekites, the
- 3:07people from Felicia and Tyre. Assyria has joined them too, and
- 3:13is allied with the descendants of Lot.
- 3:17Do to them as you did to the Midianites, as you did to Cecera
- 3:23and Jabin at the Kishon River. They were destroyed at Endor,
- 3:29and their decaying corpses fertilized the soil.
- 3:33Let their mighty nobles die as Aureb and Zeb did.
- 3:38Let all their princes die like Zeba and Zalmuna.
- 3:43For they said, let us seize for our own use these pasture lands
- 3:48of God, Oh my God. Scatter them like tumbleweed,
- 3:53like chaff before the wind, as a fire burns a forest, and as a
- 3:59flame sets mountains ablaze. Chase them with your fierce
- 4:03storm. Terrify them with your Tempest.
- 4:07Utterly disgrace them until they submit to your name.
- 4:11O Lord, let them be ashamed and terrified forever.
- 4:16Let them die in disgrace. Then they will learn that you
- 4:21alone are called the Lord. That you alone are the Most High
- 4:27supreme over all the earth. Lord, what wisdom we hear in
- 4:43this, Sam? No, not just an angry rant
- 4:46against one's enemies, but even in the midst of this persecution
- 4:51from those enemies, Lord, we hear the Cymus cry out that you
- 4:56would humble those who fought against them, but not to their
- 5:01own end, not to the end of destruction and freedom for the
- 5:05Cymus and their people, but so that those people would know
- 5:09that you are sovereign. Lord, lift our eyes from our own
- 5:15ends, from our own desires, so that we would see your will and
- 5:21your ways as our ultimate desire.
- 5:26So all of this, our victories, our peace, our crying out, our
- 5:33deepest desires, we offer them all to you, that you would take
- 5:38them, care for them, and mould them ultimately to your glory.
- 5:44We just lift you up and pray all of these things in your mighty
- 5:49name, Jesus. Amen.
