- 0:17Speaker 1: Welcome to JAG's AM. Training camp continues a scrimmage scheduled
- 0:21Speaker 1: for today. We're in studio here for you on JAGSAM
- 0:24Speaker 1: as we get ready for the second preseason game on
- 0:26Speaker 1: Sunday against the Saints, but still a couple more days
- 0:28Speaker 1: of practice before we get to that. Welcome into studio
- 0:31Speaker 1: here the hun Day Studios. I'm Tan Nannie Stevens. John
- 0:33Speaker 1: Oser is with me. We also have a special guest
- 0:36Speaker 1: host I'll introduce in a minute, but let's start out
- 0:38Speaker 1: with our Big Things presented by g e H A
- 0:40Speaker 1: Government Employees Health Association. Big Thing Number one is the scrimmage.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I mentioned this is going to be the second scrimmage
- 0:46Speaker 1: we've seen during training camp, a little bit different. They're
- 0:49Speaker 1: treating it like an actual game and going to get
- 0:52Speaker 1: some advice from our guest host today, David Garard, former
- 0:55Speaker 1: Jaguars quarterback. David, Welcome to the show.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And it's a little bit unusual.
- 1:00Speaker 1: What else of these scrimmages like this, We don't see
- 1:01Speaker 1: them very often. Did you experience that all when you played?
- 1:04Speaker 1: And and how does that help with quarterback?
- 1:06Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 1:06Speaker 3: I think, uh, they're probably having multiple scrimmages because you're
- 1:10Speaker 3: just lacking so many preseason games like you used to
- 1:12Speaker 3: do back in the day. So this is opportunity to
- 1:14Speaker 3: see your starters in situations that you can actually put
- 1:17Speaker 3: 'em in and see how they perform, but also get
- 1:20Speaker 3: some of the young guys in situations because you start
- 1:22Speaker 3: to lose the opportunity to get them in preseason games
- 1:26Speaker 3: to get meaningful snaps. So uh, I think it's a
- 1:29Speaker 3: great thing, and I'm sure more teams are gonna be
- 1:31Speaker 3: doing us around the league.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree, David, and I think the second factor
- 1:36Speaker 4: in this, uh, they would have liked, I think to
- 1:39Speaker 4: have had two joint practices, meaning they have one against
- 1:42Speaker 4: the Dolphins. I think they would have liked In the future,
- 1:44Speaker 4: we'll try to get another, uh cause I know Liam
- 1:47Speaker 4: Cohen likes that.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:49Speaker 4: This is a way I think to sort of simulate
- 1:51Speaker 4: a little more game action, get a little more of
- 1:54Speaker 4: that intensity maybe you'd have gotten from a joint practice.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:57Speaker 4: But it's interesting, I I I'm not sure I've ever
- 2:00Speaker 4: been around a team that's had two real scrimmages during
- 2:03Speaker 4: uh the tra uh during the preseason.
- 2:06Speaker 5: Uh.
- 2:06Speaker 4: So I'm wondering if if that's a trend going forward.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I think, as David said, it might be with with
- 2:10Speaker 4: the three preseason.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Games, our second big thing today is gonna be second look.
- 2:14Speaker 1: We talked a little bit about what we saw from
- 2:16Speaker 1: the starters in that first game earlier this week, but
- 2:18Speaker 1: it was only for one drive on offense and and
- 2:20Speaker 1: one and a half for some of the defensive players. John,
- 2:23Speaker 1: what are we looking forward to in this second look?
- 2:26Speaker 1: Obviously this might be the last time we see the starters,
- 2:28Speaker 1: cause there's only three preseason games. What do you kind
- 2:29Speaker 1: of have your eye out for in the second look
- 2:31Speaker 1: in the second preseason game.
- 2:32Speaker 4: Yep, It's so hard to know because usually you judge
- 2:36Speaker 4: how you're gonna see preseason based on what the coach
- 2:38Speaker 4: is underfore, and this is Leam's first time through this.
- 2:42Speaker 4: I would think this might be the last look. Because
- 2:44Speaker 4: you had a joint practice next week against Miami.
- 2:47Speaker 2: A lot of.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Coaches pull the starters out of that because they feel
- 2:50Speaker 4: like they've gotten the work in that in that pre
- 2:52Speaker 4: a in that uh joint practice. So you would assume that,
- 2:58Speaker 4: and then you would assume maybe a couple of series
- 3:00Speaker 4: to try to get a feel for these guys that
- 3:03Speaker 4: you couldn't they got to play more than.
- 3:05Speaker 2: One because you have to have a little bit of
- 3:06Speaker 2: an adjustment.
- 3:07Speaker 4: So maybe three series. I doubt through halftime. That doesn't
- 3:11Speaker 4: feel right to me, but we'll see, David. You just
- 3:14Speaker 4: don't know at this point.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm a fan now, so I want
- 3:18Speaker 3: to see my starters. I want to see them go
- 3:20Speaker 3: out and operate. I think it's a good thing for
- 3:22Speaker 3: them to go out and have multiple preseason games that
- 3:26Speaker 3: they play in. And I'm starting to see a trend
- 3:28Speaker 3: where more teams are starting to play more of their starters.
- 3:31Speaker 3: I mean, Joe Burrow played in the first preseason game.
- 3:33Speaker 3: You didn't see that kind of thing the last you know,
- 3:36Speaker 3: five years, honestly, So I like it. I think guys
- 3:40Speaker 3: need more opportunity to get the season started. You've already
- 3:43Speaker 3: eliminated one preseason game, So get your starters out there
- 3:47Speaker 3: for at least two quarters. Maybe never go into the
- 3:50Speaker 3: third quarter just because you feel like you've kept everybody
- 3:53Speaker 3: healthy and you can finish in the first quarter. But
- 3:56Speaker 3: give them some time to play together so that they
- 3:58Speaker 3: can start the season fast and strong and not come
- 4:02Speaker 3: limping into the season like they have the last few seasons.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Our final big thing today is going to be happy campers.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Is about two weeks left at this point until they
- 4:10Speaker 1: cut the roster down and things kind of wrap up
- 4:13Speaker 1: for training camp. David, I know things were different when
- 4:15Speaker 1: you played. Obviously had two days, so it was a
- 4:17Speaker 1: little bit different for a training camp. But where's what's
- 4:20Speaker 1: the perspective of a player at this point. Obviously it's
- 4:22Speaker 1: a long training camp, dog days at this point, where
- 4:25Speaker 1: what are the player's mindset at this point?
- 4:27Speaker 3: Yeah, being that old guy, I am a little jealous
- 4:30Speaker 3: that there's only one practice and I think there might
- 4:32Speaker 3: be a second practice that's another practice, just a walk through.
- 4:36Speaker 5: But you know, their.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Mindset is they're excited that camp is finally breaking. If
- 4:42Speaker 3: it is truly like a camp where they're in a
- 4:44Speaker 3: hotel and locked over there and they can't see their family,
- 4:47Speaker 3: you know, guys would always, you know, three or four
- 4:49Speaker 3: weeks in start getting excited to be able to get
- 4:52Speaker 3: back to their kids and their wives and those kind
- 4:54Speaker 3: of things, just to break up the monotony of camp.
- 4:57Speaker 3: But this one that they're doing now, I mean I
- 5:00Speaker 3: feel like they kind of can stay in it for
- 5:01Speaker 3: a little bit and uh continue to work on meshing
- 5:05Speaker 3: as a unit, meshing as a team. But usually their
- 5:07Speaker 3: their mindset is, you know, we made it through another one,
- 5:11Speaker 3: and now we've got to see who's sticking to the
- 5:13Speaker 3: roster and who's not.
- 5:14Speaker 5: And you know that's never a fun time. Uh, but
- 5:17Speaker 5: it's a it's a necessary time. Yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 4: I think the next couple of weeks or realistically for
- 5:22Speaker 4: this team more about trying to mesh, more about trying
- 5:25Speaker 4: to get ready. Liam Cohen on that I think it
- 5:27Speaker 4: was Monday, talked about you know, they probably know their
- 5:32Speaker 4: first fifty to fifty one guys right now. Uh, and
- 5:35Speaker 4: then they're trying to figure out he's gonna be on
- 5:36Speaker 4: the practice squad, what those last uh couple of roster
- 5:39Speaker 4: spots that you sort of play with are gonna look like.
- 5:42Speaker 4: But we saw in the scrimmage, Uh, this team still
- 5:45Speaker 4: needs to mesh under new head coach, new offensive coordinator,
- 5:49Speaker 4: new defensive coordinator, new GM.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Uh.
- 5:51Speaker 4: There's still some camaraderie and some chemistry uh to be gained.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So it feels like that's what this is.
- 5:58Speaker 4: And uh, two more weeks of I guess it's the
- 6:02Speaker 4: dog days.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I guess there's dog days still in training camp.
- 6:06Speaker 5: I don't know about that.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Yeah, no more dog days. It's two pushack.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, stick with us. We're gonna talk to
- 6:12Speaker 1: David gard a little bit about that first season game
- 6:15Speaker 1: and also preview the Staints matchup this weekend. Welcome back
- 6:28Speaker 1: to jag Zam, brought to you by Field's Auto Group.
- 6:31Speaker 1: See Fields First, Jacksonville's premier luxury auto group. Head over
- 6:33Speaker 1: to Fields Auto dot Com.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Welcome back in.
- 6:39Speaker 1: We've got David Gerard with us today, so we're gonna
- 6:41Speaker 1: pick your brain a little bit as we talk about
- 6:43Speaker 1: that first preseason game, also kind of the experience of
- 6:46Speaker 1: training camp a little bit. So when we look at this,
- 6:49Speaker 1: a lot of new faces around here in Jacksonville, but
- 6:51Speaker 1: one of the familiar ones is Trevor Lawrence entering his
- 6:54Speaker 1: fifth season, but a lot of change for him, right,
- 6:56Speaker 1: three different coaching staffs, three different offensive systems. I'm sure
- 7:00Speaker 1: you're familiar with a lot of change in terms of systems.
- 7:02Speaker 1: So how difficult is that as a quarterback to pick
- 7:05Speaker 1: up a new system?
- 7:06Speaker 3: It can be pretty difficult because every system can be
- 7:10Speaker 3: totally different.
- 7:11Speaker 5: You can be speaking Spanish one day and then.
- 7:13Speaker 3: All of sudden you're speaking English or Chinese, like it's
- 7:16Speaker 3: just a totally different language, and you really have to
- 7:19Speaker 3: put in a ton of work. Like at home, he's married,
- 7:24Speaker 3: so he's got a wife that can sit there and
- 7:26Speaker 3: call plays to him so he can repeat it back towards.
- 7:29Speaker 3: These are things that me and my wife did many times.
- 7:32Speaker 3: And you have to because you're trying to get yourself
- 7:35Speaker 3: familiar with the verbiage so that when you're in the huddle,
- 7:38Speaker 3: the guys know exactly that you have it one hundred
- 7:41Speaker 3: percent down. Now they can struggle a little bit with
- 7:44Speaker 3: what's being said, but the quarterback can.
- 7:46Speaker 5: So it's it's very important for you to.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Know that language that you're speaking and be able to
- 7:51Speaker 3: enunciate it and get it to the guys clearly.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And David, how important you know?
- 7:56Speaker 4: I assume there's learning the system and then there's applying
- 8:00Speaker 4: the system once the pads go on and once you
- 8:03Speaker 4: know the bullets fly or however you want to call it.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Is is it different in a new system once it
- 8:12Speaker 4: gets real and you've really got to use what you've learned.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Is there a process that Trevor's going through right now.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Yeah, he's he's really trying to figure out the best
- 8:19Speaker 3: way that when he hears the call that he is
- 8:21Speaker 3: going to be able to go out and produce as
- 8:25Speaker 3: easily and functional for him as possible, because if he's
- 8:30Speaker 3: not on, then it's hard to get anybody else on
- 8:33Speaker 3: because he's the one that's got to.
- 8:34Speaker 5: You know, get the ball to everybody.
- 8:35Speaker 3: So you want to make sure as a quarterback that
- 8:38Speaker 3: you are prepared and that you're ready to go, but
- 8:42Speaker 3: not just mentally, but also physically, and also making sure
- 8:46Speaker 3: your teammates are ready to go. So if he has
- 8:48Speaker 3: to have meetings where he calls in the whole offense
- 8:52Speaker 3: or just the receivers, or maybe the running backs are
- 8:54Speaker 3: struggling with something, he's got to make sure, you know,
- 8:57Speaker 3: coming from a coach, that he's also being a coach
- 9:01Speaker 3: and going and sometimes he'll stop in the running backs
- 9:04Speaker 3: room see what they're going over so that he can
- 9:07Speaker 3: tell them, oh, this is what I'm thinking on this,
- 9:10Speaker 3: what are you thinking on this? And he'll go into
- 9:12Speaker 3: every room and do that because you have to. You
- 9:15Speaker 3: have to make sure the old line is on the
- 9:17Speaker 3: same page, receivers, running backs, tight ends, all of them.
- 9:20Speaker 5: And then you go sit in with the coaches.
- 9:22Speaker 3: So you're another coach out there on the field and
- 9:25Speaker 3: when you're in the locker room, in the meeting rooms.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Running back room is one we've been focusing on.
- 9:29Speaker 1: There's a lot of some new faces, some old faces,
- 9:32Speaker 1: a lot of competition in that group. Liam Collen has
- 9:35Speaker 1: said his focus is really establishing the run and taking
- 9:38Speaker 1: some of that pressure off Trevor. Obviously you've played with
- 9:41Speaker 1: some good running backs yourself. How much does that help
- 9:43Speaker 1: you when you kind of know what you're getting from
- 9:45Speaker 1: those guys, so you can kind of expect something from
- 9:49Speaker 1: them and take a little bit of pressure off yourself.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I love the running back room because you have so
- 9:54Speaker 3: many different dynamic running backs. You got Etn who can
- 9:58Speaker 3: he can rush, he can also catch very well, and
- 10:01Speaker 3: he's real fluid and smooth when he's on the field.
- 10:04Speaker 5: Tank Bigsby type back that is.
- 10:07Speaker 3: More bruising downhill but also still has the speed to
- 10:11Speaker 3: take off. Touton who just has the speed and cannot
- 10:14Speaker 3: run anybody, and every coach will tell you speed kills.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So anytime you can get those kind of guys on
- 10:20Speaker 3: the field, and even Allen the other bigger back, is
- 10:24Speaker 3: huge because you want to make sure your quarterback has
- 10:27Speaker 3: somebody that he can rely on I can just turn around,
- 10:30Speaker 3: hand this ball to you and know that you can
- 10:32Speaker 3: take it forty to.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Fifty yards and take some of that pressure off me.
- 10:36Speaker 5: Just look at the Philadelphia Eagles with Sakoon Barkley.
- 10:39Speaker 3: I mean, when you can have a back that can
- 10:41Speaker 3: take some of the stress off of the offense, off
- 10:44Speaker 3: of the quarterback and they can go put the ball
- 10:47Speaker 3: in the end zone, it's huge.
- 10:49Speaker 5: So we definitely need this group to perform well this year.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Something I've talked a lot about this week data the
- 10:55Speaker 4: other night when two scored in the second half and
- 10:58Speaker 4: the team sort of carried.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Him into the end zone. If you well, it wasn't
- 11:01Speaker 2: quite like that the offensive line pushed him in.
- 11:04Speaker 4: You know, I may be making too much out of it,
- 11:06Speaker 4: but it really seemed the reaction afterward. As much as
- 11:10Speaker 4: Liam Cohen has talked about the running game, it seemed
- 11:13Speaker 4: very symbolic and it seemed like a sign that this
- 11:16Speaker 4: team was buying into.
- 11:17Speaker 2: That whole idea We've got to be more physical. Anything
- 11:21Speaker 2: to that. Did you like seeing that? And can a
- 11:24Speaker 2: team sort of embrace that sort of thing this early?
- 11:27Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Absolutely, That's what training campus for is to build those
- 11:32Speaker 3: that camaraderie, to build guys that are trying to work together,
- 11:36Speaker 3: that are trying to you know, pull and push in
- 11:40Speaker 3: the same direction.
- 11:41Speaker 5: And so that's what you want. That's what you need.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Just like when our kicker hit that seventy yarder. Yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 3: I mean you see Travis Hunter, first guy out there
- 11:50Speaker 3: to go give him a big chess ball.
- 11:51Speaker 5: I mean those he.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Almost jumped ashigh as you did. He jumped way higher than.
- 11:56Speaker 5: So, but that's what you want.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Those are the things that's the galvanizing All those things happen.
- 12:03Speaker 3: Now when you see the Chiefs and all these other
- 12:05Speaker 3: teams in the Super Bowl, it's because of these moments
- 12:09Speaker 3: in training camp, them figuring it all out and everybody
- 12:12Speaker 3: buying in to being on the same page to move
- 12:15Speaker 3: in the same direction. That's what's gotta happen. And anytime
- 12:18Speaker 3: you can get those moments, you know, doesn't matter who
- 12:21Speaker 3: it is. Guys don't care who it is. I mean
- 12:23Speaker 3: I wasn't the starter my whole time when I played,
- 12:26Speaker 3: but when I got out there, guys.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Were pulling for me to go out there and perform.
- 12:30Speaker 3: So whoever's out there, as long as you're putting the
- 12:32Speaker 3: ball in the end zone, you're making plays. You're the
- 12:34Speaker 3: guy that is that's got the energy, that juice that
- 12:38Speaker 3: guys want to go out there and rally behind and
- 12:40Speaker 3: play for They'll do it, doesn't matter who you are.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I didn't want to touch on the offensive line room.
- 12:45Speaker 1: This feels like the first season we've had in a
- 12:47Speaker 1: while where there's a ton of competition in that group.
- 12:50Speaker 1: What as a quarterback, is it just time on task
- 12:52Speaker 1: to get that trust with your offensive line? What does
- 12:54Speaker 1: it take to get to that?
- 12:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, it's it's that, but it's really just
- 12:59Speaker 3: believing in them, knowing that they can get the job done,
- 13:03Speaker 3: because you know, when you're playing quarterback, you can't think
- 13:05Speaker 3: about what they're doing.
- 13:07Speaker 5: You're thinking about how not.
- 13:09Speaker 3: To get hit and protect yourself and all that kind
- 13:11Speaker 3: of stuff. But once the ball is snapped, it's on
- 13:14Speaker 3: them to do their job, and you want to make
- 13:16Speaker 3: sure that you have the best five the coaches have
- 13:19Speaker 3: figured out who's the best out there, especially for my
- 13:23Speaker 3: left tackle, because I can't see what's going on back there,
- 13:26Speaker 3: so I need to make sure that you've got it
- 13:28Speaker 3: down and coaches understand, like if somebody's struggling in that area,
- 13:32Speaker 3: if it is a little that's struggling or whatever it is,
- 13:37Speaker 3: they'll help him. They'll protect him, they'll put the tight
- 13:40Speaker 3: end to his side more, they'll slide the line to
- 13:42Speaker 3: his side. So there's ways to help. Because sometimes when
- 13:45Speaker 3: you get a rookie that comes in, you want to
- 13:47Speaker 3: make sure that you're just not leaving them on an island.
- 13:49Speaker 3: So there's ways to help, especially tackles, but you want
- 13:53Speaker 3: to make sure you have the five and then they
- 13:55Speaker 3: play together as much in as long as possible, because
- 13:59Speaker 3: there are times when a call isn't gonna be made,
- 14:01Speaker 3: but you need to make sure or that person needs
- 14:04Speaker 3: to know this is what I'm supposed to be doing
- 14:06Speaker 3: in this situation.
- 14:07Speaker 5: Even though nobody said it.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm ready for it, and that you just gotta
- 14:11Speaker 3: have just the ultimate trust in your old line.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Knowing your responsibility. Yeah, for sure.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Stay with us here on Jagsam.
- 14:17Speaker 1: After the break, we're gonna talk a little bit about
- 14:19Speaker 1: that second preseason game as we had to New Orleans
- 14:21Speaker 1: this weekend. Jack bamb brought to you by Suttith Moving
- 14:35Speaker 1: in Storage, Florida's most trusted and dependable moving company Setteth
- 14:38Speaker 1: proud to be the official moving company of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

- 14:47Speaker 1: Welcome back in to JAG's am preseason underway. The scrimmage
- 14:50Speaker 1: underway in training camp today. But we're gonna talk a
- 14:53Speaker 1: little bit quickly about that second preseason matchup that's coming
- 14:56Speaker 1: up this weekend. Normally Daguars play Friday, Saturday or something
- 14:59Speaker 1: like that. They're gonna playing Sunday at one. It's gonna
- 15:01Speaker 1: be like a real deal, as we had to New
- 15:03Speaker 1: Orleans this weekend and taking on a franchise that's in
- 15:06Speaker 1: a similar spot in terms of new coaching staff. We
- 15:10Speaker 1: don't have a new quarterback, but they'll have a new
- 15:11Speaker 1: quarterback as well, So lots of change going on for them.
- 15:13Speaker 1: But Kellen Moore, who was the offensive coordinator with the
- 15:17Speaker 1: Super Bowl champion of Philadelphia Eagles, They're obviously gonna be
- 15:20Speaker 1: tried to be offensively focused, as many teams are in
- 15:23Speaker 1: the twenty twenty five NFL. But I feel like there's
- 15:29Speaker 1: at least here there's an excitement to see what the
- 15:33Speaker 1: team will actually look like. Right So, I'm assuming New
- 15:35Speaker 1: Orleans is in a similar situation where John they don't
- 15:37Speaker 1: necessarily know their identity yet, but this is when they're finally,
- 15:40Speaker 1: for the first time kind of seeing how this team
- 15:42Speaker 1: will be built going forward.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Yeah, they finally had to hit reset. I mean, I
- 15:45Speaker 4: mean they were franchised for years with Breeze. They kept
- 15:49Speaker 4: playing it out, playing it out, sort of mortgaging the future.
- 15:51Speaker 4: As you say, they even because of their salary cap.
- 15:55Speaker 4: And I'm looking at it from a distance, but because
- 15:57Speaker 4: their salary cap, they sort of had to he sort
- 16:01Speaker 4: of patchworking it for a while, and then this year
- 16:04Speaker 4: they finally said, Okay, we.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Have to make a change and move this thing forward.
- 16:09Speaker 2: It feels like rebuilding there with the first year quarterback in.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Preseason David, realistically, you're looking more at the team you're covering.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So I'm fascinated really to see what we.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Talked about earlier, how the Jaguars will play starters, how
- 16:25Speaker 4: they will approach this. Do they have this feel like
- 16:28Speaker 4: their preseason warm up, meaning you know, there's always a
- 16:32Speaker 4: dress rehearsal game for you guys, it was always Week
- 16:34Speaker 4: three because you wanted to not play in Week four.
- 16:37Speaker 4: I'm curious to see how much this is a dress
- 16:39Speaker 4: rehearsal for.
- 16:40Speaker 5: The Jaguars.
- 16:42Speaker 1: When we're looking at We talked a little bit about
- 16:45Speaker 1: Tyler Shuck, who's actually one week older than Trevor Lawrence,
- 16:48Speaker 1: which will be interesting considering the new college landscape.
- 16:51Speaker 2: Rookie, that's what I mean.
- 16:52Speaker 1: He's a rookie.
- 16:53Speaker 2: He's coming in.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Trevor's into year five, Shuck is into year one. When
- 16:57Speaker 1: you're coming in a little bit older, is it?
- 17:01Speaker 5: I mean?
- 17:01Speaker 1: I guess we'll find out on Sunday. But what's the
- 17:04Speaker 1: learning curve? How was it for you coming in and
- 17:06Speaker 1: kind of trying to learn that NFL offense? Did you
- 17:09Speaker 1: feel prepared for it when you came in?
- 17:10Speaker 5: Yeah? So when I came in, once again, it was
- 17:12Speaker 5: old school. We're always gonna be saying old school when
- 17:14Speaker 5: people were talking about me, but it was a more
- 17:17Speaker 5: old school kind of way.
- 17:18Speaker 3: You played at least four years of college football, and
- 17:22Speaker 3: if you red shirted like I did, it was five
- 17:24Speaker 3: years of college football because they wanted to have a
- 17:27Speaker 3: more veteran guy coming into the league and not a
- 17:31Speaker 3: young pup that they would have to kind of learn
- 17:33Speaker 3: and figure out how to play NFL ball and all
- 17:35Speaker 3: that kind of stuff. But the way that the college
- 17:38Speaker 3: game is and the way that the NFL game is,
- 17:40Speaker 3: they're kind of getting closer and closer together.
- 17:43Speaker 5: I mean, you can see in the pros everybody's.
- 17:45Speaker 3: In shotgun all the time already now so and in
- 17:49Speaker 3: college they don't even know how to go under center.
- 17:51Speaker 5: So it's it. That's just how the game is, and
- 17:55Speaker 5: I'm okay with it.
- 17:56Speaker 3: I used to be the grumpy old guy that would say,
- 17:59Speaker 3: you know, get under center, and what are we doing here?
- 18:02Speaker 3: We're teaching these college guys, you know, bad habits and
- 18:05Speaker 3: all this kind of stuff. But as long as the
- 18:08Speaker 3: game is fun, they're putting points up, quarterbacks are making plays.
- 18:12Speaker 3: When I was coming out, you did not talk the
- 18:15Speaker 3: same way that these uh NFL teams are talking with
- 18:18Speaker 3: their language and that kind of stuff. There might be
- 18:20Speaker 3: some similarities here and there, but are hundred plays compared
- 18:26Speaker 3: to their three hundred and fifty plays.
- 18:28Speaker 5: It's a big difference. You're like, how can you add
- 18:30Speaker 5: that many more plays? But you can't? Uh, and they did.
- 18:33Speaker 3: So it is interesting. It is pretty cool. But I
- 18:37Speaker 3: think with Schuck he's gonna be that kind of older,
- 18:41Speaker 3: young vet rookie guy that can come in and hopefully
- 18:45Speaker 3: handle things a little better. Than say a twenty one
- 18:49Speaker 3: year old. But you know, it's always what are you
- 18:52Speaker 3: doing on the field, That's what it always comes down to.
- 18:54Speaker 3: We can talk about it all right now in the preseason.
- 18:56Speaker 3: You can look great in the preseason, but when real
- 18:59Speaker 3: bullet start flying in Week one, that's when we're going
- 19:03Speaker 3: to get a true idea of how good these guys are.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it looks like he's gonna get to start right away,
- 19:07Speaker 1: so we'll get a look at that on Sunday. Say
- 19:10Speaker 1: it with here, we'll tell you what's coming up the
- 19:11Speaker 1: rest of the week before the game on Sunday. Jags fans,
- 19:25Speaker 1: do you want customize Jaguars furniture for your home? Check
- 19:28Speaker 1: out zipcare dot com to browse all the customizable options.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Zip Chair is furniture for fans.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Welcome back into Jagsday.
- 19:41Speaker 1: I'm going to talk a little bit about cut day,
- 19:43Speaker 1: which is I think ten days away at this point eleven.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Maybe it's not coming Tuesday, the next Tuesday. Liam Cohen
- 19:49Speaker 1: talked earlier this week and he said in his mind
- 19:52Speaker 1: he's got fifty of the fifty three kind of figured out.
- 19:56Speaker 1: So David, just want to use your experience a little
- 19:59Speaker 1: bit at this edge of the this point in the preseason,
- 20:03Speaker 1: what are players kind of trying to try to make
- 20:05Speaker 1: a mark on their last uh last kind of opportunities
- 20:08Speaker 1: to show the coach.
- 20:08Speaker 3: That they got Yeah, I mean it's the last opportunities
- 20:12Speaker 3: of you being able to make that mark so that
- 20:16Speaker 3: coaches remember you and say, we need to have this
- 20:18Speaker 3: guy on our st on our roster. So it is
- 20:22Speaker 3: a big moment for a lot of guys. You know,
- 20:26Speaker 3: I honestly never had to go through any kind of
- 20:29Speaker 3: cut situation like that. Well at the cut times I did.
- 20:33Speaker 3: If anybody remembers, but.
- 20:36Speaker 2: Your lunch, well we did have lunch, so you know.
- 20:41Speaker 5: But it is testing.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Even when you are a starter, even when you are
- 20:45Speaker 3: a guy that's not worried as much, you still kind
- 20:48Speaker 3: of have it in the back of your mind because
- 20:50Speaker 3: you start hearing of other guys that are vets that
- 20:54Speaker 3: you're like, whoa, that guy's pretty good and he just.
- 20:56Speaker 5: Got let go. So it's always in the back of
- 20:58Speaker 5: your mind for everybody.
- 20:59Speaker 3: But when you're a young guy, when you get to
- 21:01Speaker 3: these moments, you just have to stay within yourself, make
- 21:05Speaker 3: sure that you're putting in a ton of extra reps
- 21:08Speaker 3: before and after practice as much as you can so
- 21:11Speaker 3: that when your number is called, you're able to go
- 21:13Speaker 3: out there and just make a play, make a play
- 21:16Speaker 3: or two so that the coaches say, we can't cut
- 21:18Speaker 3: this guy.
- 21:18Speaker 5: This guy is making plays for us.
- 21:20Speaker 3: I mean, Terrell Davis uh has kind of the most unbelievable,
- 21:26Speaker 3: you know, last day of cut situation. He's in a
- 21:28Speaker 3: final preseason game. He's not making the team. The coach
- 21:31Speaker 3: has already kind of told him he's not, So just
- 21:33Speaker 3: go out there and have fun done and do whatever
- 21:34Speaker 3: you can do. Goes down and makes a huge hit
- 21:37Speaker 3: on a guy on kickoff, and he makes a team
- 21:40Speaker 3: through special teams because of that hit on the last
- 21:43Speaker 3: preseason game. This guy turns out to be a Hall
- 21:46Speaker 3: of Fame player, which is unbelievable in so many different ways.
- 21:49Speaker 3: But that right there just tells you you can do it,
- 21:51Speaker 3: and you can go on and have a great career,
- 21:54Speaker 3: not just make a team one year.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:56Speaker 4: I think one thing to to remember now it's so
- 22:01Speaker 4: much different than when I started covering to league when
- 22:03Speaker 4: you played, is that there's now sixteen guys on the.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Practice squad rather than six.
- 22:08Speaker 4: So the reality of the last cut has become and
- 22:12Speaker 4: I think it's a really positive for the league and
- 22:14Speaker 4: the players. By the way, it's less about, you know,
- 22:17Speaker 4: when you get that knock on the door. For a
- 22:20Speaker 4: lot of these guys, the career is not ending. It
- 22:23Speaker 4: just means they're not gonna be making as much money
- 22:25Speaker 4: that first week, and then they're still gonna have a
- 22:27Speaker 4: chance to develop, which is a huge It's been a
- 22:30Speaker 4: major improvement.
- 22:32Speaker 2: It also takes you know, it's obviously a huge deal
- 22:35Speaker 2: to make the.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Final roster, but so much of the roster now five
- 22:39Speaker 4: or six or seven of these guys are on the
- 22:40Speaker 4: practice squad wind up getting moved up. You're sort of
- 22:44Speaker 4: a you know, an auxiliary part of the team, if
- 22:48Speaker 4: you will. So it's not like you're necessarily saying goodbye.
- 22:52Speaker 2: To these guys. A lot of these guys will still contribute.
- 22:55Speaker 4: That said, when you make that roster, it's still a
- 22:58Speaker 4: big deal for these kids, and it's still a cool
- 23:00Speaker 4: story that day when they make that fifty three.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Absolutely tough decisions, but very exciting for those that make
- 23:05Speaker 1: the fifty three. So we're gonna head to New Orleans
- 23:08Speaker 1: this weekend our second preseason game, will be back next
- 23:11Speaker 1: week to recap everything for you here on dad's I
- 23:13Speaker 1: Am
