- 0:26[SPEAKER_02]: What's up everybody, and welcome to another episode of Scouting The Fins right here on the Threat Prairie podcast network, also part of the five reason sports network.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_02]: I'm your host, Hussan Patel, and joining me today is Coach Eric, how are we doing?
- 0:43[SPEAKER_04]: Hey, and so I'm doing well.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_04]: You know, we are finally the point we're not really asking so many questions with the roster and what to expect, heading into the regular season, kind of have the answers there.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_04]: We're just over a week away now from, you know, as a recording of, you know, playing that week one game and really seeing what we have in this team.
- 1:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_02]: Um, there weren't a lot of surprises.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_02]: on the roster, I would say.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_02]: And I still don't think the roster is finalized, finalized.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_02]: Just yet, obviously they can still add some people.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_02]: We heard Chris hear say that they're going to be adding campsmith to the end of five lists, which is the non football injury list.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: And it looks like that the dolphins have already signed Kendall Lamb, who a lot of people thought and Coach, I know you stated that he might have one foot out the door already.
- 1:48[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I, you know, I don't have a problem with Kendall Lamb.
- 1:52[SPEAKER_04]: You know, he's a great professional, great great great guy to have in the room.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, if you go back even to last year when Austin Jackson went out, he was a Kendall Lamb was a big reason for the fall off in the rushing attack that we had.
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, he was wondering what that in the rushing attack.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: I love.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and he was battling some injuries last year.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, I had gone back and revisited his preseason tape.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_04]: from the Eagles from this season.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_04]: And I really don't see a much different player than what it was last year.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_04]: He's a player that you know what you're getting.
- 2:34[SPEAKER_04]: He knows the system.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_04]: He knows the protection.
- 2:36[SPEAKER_04]: He knows all the calls.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_04]: So there's a warm and fuzzy feeling of being able to put somebody in there that hopefully isn't going to be a complete disaster.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_04]: But when that's the best thing that you can say about it,
- 2:49[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it doesn't get you too excited.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there weren't a whole ton of surprises for the dolphins on offense for the quarterback and running back position at least.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: I think the Jalen right injury kind of threw a fork
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: basically into the wall outlet where they had to go out and sign Jeff Wilson back again over to the practice squad.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_02]: We talked a lot about Ali Gordon the last few episodes.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: Looks like he's coming around really, really well.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_02]: Devon Hane is slated to start week one at least.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_02]: That's what Chris Speer said.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously a lot of things can happen.
- 3:41[SPEAKER_02]: between now, until game one up against the Indianapolis Colts, they released my boon, they waived Aaron Shamblin, Shamblin, up at dinner butcher his name.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: But the pecking order for the top three was pretty much set in stone, once Alexander Madison landed on IR.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like you said.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_04]: You know exactly what it is, right?
- 4:08[SPEAKER_04]: It's Devon H and it's Ali Gordon and now it would be Jeff Wilson again.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_04]: Somebody coming back to just knows the system.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_04]: I think the big part there is that one, as much as we all like Ali Gordon and as much as we, you know, have really admired what he's done here in the preseason.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_04]: He hasn't done it in an NFL regular season game yet.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_04]: So there is an unknown there and Devon H and Andrew, I think I saw that it was
- 4:38[SPEAKER_04]: compared to what Christian McCaffery went through last year, and that was one that kept popping back up never really seemed to heal properly.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_04]: So if we, if HN is not at a hundred percent, if Ali Gordon is not able to carry over those reps that he was doing against back up NFL players in the preseason, able to carry that over
- 5:02[SPEAKER_04]: to the starters, right?
- 5:04[SPEAKER_04]: At least you have Jeff Wilson who has done it in the NFL against starters, knows exactly what he's doing.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_04]: You know, knows the timing, knows the the verbiage of the system.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_04]: But, you know, again, nothing, nothing to be too excited for there.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_04]: But I do think that, you know, probably going to lead a little more on the passing attack early in the season as those pieces
- 5:30[SPEAKER_04]: get healthy and get their feet under them.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_04]: So having Jeff Wilson, you know, as a, you know, the worst case scenario, you could definitely do worse than that.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know, I think.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_02]: The worst case scenario, as you mentioned, is the one HN can go week one in all the Gordon's reps.
- 5:49[SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't continue that same consistency, and now you have to rely on Jeff Wilson Jr.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: Who didn't get a lot of carries last season, just got picked up of the practice squad.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, his legs should be French.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_02]: He might be able to get to at least ten to eleven decent rushes.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_02]: That's going to spell some disaster for the offense and might throw a really bad ring going to the offense, a game plan against the colds, less not hope.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_02]: That happens as we move to the wider severs.
- 6:25[SPEAKER_02]: I think what's notable is that the dolphins kept six wide receivers right after the initial fifty three-man roster where last year they only had four.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_02]: The extra two that did make it were DS Gridge and Todd Washington both of those guys provide valuable special teams reps as returners and both of them as gunners.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_04]: Wasn't Taj Washington last year?
- 6:56[SPEAKER_04]: Wasn't he injured early?
- 6:58[SPEAKER_02]: No, I'm saying that Taj Washington and D.S.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_04]: Gridge are from this year.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you're exactly right with the special teams, part of it, both add value as returns and they're both going to have to contribute on coverage teams as well.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_04]: But they get those are, you know, when you look at players that, you know, there's not a lot of players that get claimed in the grand scheme of things.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_04]: when you count the number of players that get wave versus the number of players that get claimed by other teams, right?
- 7:29[SPEAKER_04]: So it's a fairly low risk proposition.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_04]: But I think those are two players.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_04]: The Dolphins felt had put enough on tape in the preseason that a wider receiver across the league is a position that teams carry five, six of them on the roster and with that special teams value, right?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_04]: When you talk about those lower end receivers on your roster, right, your special teams value is where you're looking
- 7:54[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that, you know, they felt that had they put either of those players on waivers that another team was going to pick them up, knowing that they could put them in, you know, as a wide receiver, five or six on their roster and, you know, be able to contribute.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_04]: So I think that says a lot about the depth of the receiving room that you can really go six deep that you feel like somebody across the NFL is going to, you know, make a waiver claim on that player.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they had also waved Eric as a conmobile was one of the very first draft picks for the Mike McDonald's first draft class.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: Andrew Armstrong, Armstrong, the always junior in AJ, heading were waved as well, but all three of those guys got signed back to the practice squad.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_02]: I thought they were going to carry seven and keep the always junior.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_02]: As an extra, because they need another big body type on their outside of Nicholasbrook, Akine.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_02]: As Grige and Taj Washington, they had fantastic preseason, uh, showings and outings.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's pretty much what kept an on there along with the special teams value.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_02]: I think the biggest shocker was feral brown being released after him being one of the very first signings in the tight end room.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_02]: Chris Minaric was also released in Hayden Ruchi, was waived, I think Ruchi came back over to the
- 9:26[SPEAKER_02]: practice squad and let me just go ahead.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he did Ruchi is back to the practice squad, but it seems as if the amount of reps Pharaoh Brown had in that second and third preseason game.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_02]: It looks like the coaching staff wanted to see more out of him over your thoughts of when you watched him.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so, you know, I wasn't as high on Pharaoh Brown as a lot of people where it seemed like a lot of people felt like he was going to come in and just be one of the better blocking tight ends in the league, just not somebody that contributed in the receiving.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_04]: I wasn't as high on him.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_04]: So I still felt like, you know, in a competition that Julian Hill would stand a good chance of coming out ahead, but I did expect Pharaoh Brown to stick around as that
- 10:14[SPEAKER_04]: that Y tight end number two is essentially replacing the Durham's smithed tape roll.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_04]: So that was a bit surprising that he was cut.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_04]: And not only that he was cut, but there is no other Y tight end on the fifty three man roster.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_04]: You know, they have the ability to elevate those practice squad players up to three times.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_04]: So I, you know, Hayden Ruchi is one that I would pay attention to.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_04]: as being somebody at this point based on what's on the roster, I would expect to see him promoted to the active roster for, you know, week one, there's three if they don't add anybody else.
- 10:54[SPEAKER_04]: But I think that he and Roochie also had some good stuff in preseason.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_04]: And when you look at the poor performance that we got added germs to my last year, you know, maybe the team felt that
- 11:05[SPEAKER_04]: running it back with Julian Hill and having Hayden Roochie replaced that germ's Smith role is enough but there's you know also some concern with the F tight inside of it that was the the John who Smith role and you know there you have we have no clue
- 11:21[SPEAKER_04]: what you're getting out of Darren Waller, you know, dinner conner is athletic.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_04]: And I guess that he knows the playbook in the sense that it seems like he is the number two in Alec Engled is unavailable, but he really hasn't together any production.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_04]: And then he got dull, such that they added that, you know, doesn't even know the playbook yet.
- 11:41[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, I think
- 11:44[SPEAKER_04]: For me, I think we kind of know what we have going into the season with the wide tight inside of it, knowing what we got out of Julian Hill, even though many people didn't like that.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_04]: I think that we'll get close to Jerome Smith with Hayden Ruchi, but I have no idea what to expect from the production out of the F-tight ant position.
- 12:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as we move on to the offensive line, the starting five, obviously, was going to be Paul, seven, and I, Aaron, Brewer, James, Daniel, and Austin Jackson.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_02]: You have Larry Borem, who primarily pay a place that right tackle enough tackle position.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_02]: You have a swing tackle slash guard in Kian Smith, and a swing guard slash center in Daniel, Brown, and Scalia.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_02]: Mike and Brett was moved to the reserve.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_02]: Physically, unable to perform list Andrew Meyer was put on IR with the designation.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_02]: to return a lot of releases on the offensive line and one release on offensive line, which was Jackson Carman.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_02]: and a lot of waves for rookie pick and Ryan Hayes, UDFA in Mason Brooks, Jalen McKenzie, Josh Prevy, they waved Baron Montose, who was their international player.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_02]: And the surprise wave was Addison West.
- 13:00[SPEAKER_02]: There was a stat I saw and I put it out there on Twitter that Addison West.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_02]: was the top offensive lineman in preseason for the amount of snaps that he had that did not allow a pressure, which was six to eight.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: And within two minutes when I tweeted that he was, he was waved, so I was like, oh, looks like they did take that into his evaluation and criteria.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I don't I mean,
- 13:34[SPEAKER_04]: I don't think there was a lot of surprises there.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_04]: I felt like they might.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_04]: Brain DNA was one that I thought might have had a chance of being claimed because I felt that he'd put good enough tape on there that I was a little concerned when he got wave that somebody else made a take a chance on him, but he returned to practice squad.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_04]: But then we talk about their rest of them.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_04]: As far as the undrafted free agents, Addison West was the one that I felt was most pro-ready.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_04]: right so I think earlier in all season I had said that out is a three I felt like he had the best chance of making and making the fifty three as a rookie had a solid solid preseason but one of the big reasons that I was not as surprised he was released
- 14:25[SPEAKER_04]: I was more surprised that he was not brought back onto the practice squad.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_04]: And instead, they brought Josh Prew.
- 14:32[SPEAKER_04]: And the reason for that is that with Andrew Meyer and Liam Aikenberg on the reserve lists, you know, once you get through Aaron Brewer and Daniel Brunskill, there's nobody else to snap the ball, right?
- 14:46[SPEAKER_04]: You know, maybe you can say that James Daniels can slide over and be your, you know, your emergency option there, but that
- 14:54[SPEAKER_04]: I just don't like only having two centers on the roster.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_04]: I would have preferred to see Addison West stay over Josh Prebe who also had a solid but unspectacular preseason just in terms of having the braiden Daniels, the Daniel Brunskills are probably going to go in ahead of him at guard, maybe even Keon Smith.
- 15:18[SPEAKER_04]: I would have kept Addison West over Josh Prebe for the practice squad.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as we finish off, the offensive line in the offense.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_02]: Overall, Chris Greer did say that they were a little light in the offensive line room, which is eight offensive line men now.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_02]: They have Kendall Lam, so they'll both likely have nine offensive linemen on the roster.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think they had to cut Jordan Colbert, which we'll talk about on the defense overall.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_02]: But Kendall Lam provides some decent enough depth.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_02]: Run game.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_02]: That's so sure God forbid, hopefully not.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_02]: Austin Jackson does not go out with an injury and the offensive line stays healthy.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_02]: Please football, guys.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_02]: Please mention the offensive line stays healthy.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_02]: We're going to go to break and we will talk about the defense shortly.

- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: All right, Coach, I know you had to put out something on Twitter a little bit earlier on Thursday night.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: More so talking about the continuity of this defense of this defensive coaching staff.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_02]: We'll go ahead and play a clip of Anthony Weaver on the dry time podcast with Travis Wingfield talking about that.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: Here is Anthony Weaver.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_03]: coming in the year two is it's just an alignment and vision.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_03]: I think you're really, I was really the only person that was able to come from Baltimore.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_03]: So not only were we trying to teach the players what we were looking for, what I was looking for, but I was also trying to teach the coaches.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_03]: And there's a lot of trial and error in that.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_03]: Well, we don't have to do that anymore.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_03]: We found that probably about a third way through the season last year.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_03]: We figured out a rhythm and what there's just an alignment of how we all wanted to look like.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_03]: And now that we have that, we've just been chasing all the small intricate details, which can take us from good to grace.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_03]: So just super excited about where we're at and just it's not just us as a staff that there's a trickle down there and now, right, we're even from a player standpoint, they can see the confidence in us and what we're doing.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a succeler, right?
- 18:58[SPEAKER_01]: The starting point, right?
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_03]: We were
- 19:02[SPEAKER_03]: we're so much further ahead at this point in June that we were the year prior because of that.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I love I love here and that and it's gone to be on both sides of the football.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_01]: The offense has to happen here for quite a while together.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 19:17[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you coach Weaver and Travis Wing fueled for that information on that.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_02]: However, even though the coaching staff has stayed the same,
- 19:28[SPEAKER_02]: The defensive players have not, it's been a complete one-eighty of the defensive roster from the defensive line to the line-backer group to a brand new and young secondary coach.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_02]: Do you have some reservations about this defense heading into week one of against Indianapolis Coles?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, anybody that says they don't have reservations about the dolphin secondary is probably lying to you, right?
- 20:01[SPEAKER_04]: There's different levels of panic with it.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not, I'm not panicked about them.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_04]: But I like what they've put together.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_04]: I think that the way they've constructed that front seven is set up to really protect that secondary.
- 20:16[SPEAKER_04]: And the pieces that they have added to the secondary, you know, might take a little bit of time for them to
- 20:23[SPEAKER_04]: to mesh, right?
- 20:24[SPEAKER_04]: But I think that what they are asking the secondary to do, I think they've gotten some solid pieces to fit in there.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that overall, I think this defense has a chance to be pretty good this season.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, let's let's talk about the main talking point, which is the secondary.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: With the trade, Forminko Fitzpatrick, it seems as if, you know, Chris Greer was obviously stoked.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_02]: He was the big signing this free agency.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, he said that getting Minko and having him added to the group was huge for the dolphins.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: He's a young player.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_02]: He's a growing player.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_02]: He's still in
- 21:07[SPEAKER_02]: a sending player.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_02]: You said that campsmith would be going on the NFL list, a lot of young corners.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_02]: And their rookie Jason Marshall Jr., it sounds like they're very, very excited about it.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, for for him to get
- 21:24[SPEAKER_02]: The starting nickel roll, it sounds like they're confident on them because it's not just about how he plays, but also about the right mentality.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: Like, yeah, he's they're taking on guys, blitzing, tackling, and it's more so about the willingness and the fearlessness
- 21:43[SPEAKER_02]: he has and he said that during joint practice is the coaches and you know the football ops crew was talking about how they were pushing him and pushing him to be very physical so he said that you know he has a lot of confidence in Jason Marshall Jr.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_02]: to do it.
- 22:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you know, like you said, you know, Mink is coming in.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_04]: Mink is going to be the focal point of that secondary.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I think we've seen some good stuff out of if you melafonlue in the pre-season as well, wish we could have seen something out of Ashton Davis, but sounds like he's pretty close to being, you know, a full bell.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_04]: Jason Marshall, Jr.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_04]: is another one that we don't know what we're going to get like.
- 22:29[SPEAKER_04]: We've seen some really good stuff from him in the slot, right?
- 22:32[SPEAKER_04]: But when the bullets are live and we're going against ones, you know, we don't know what we're going to get there.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_04]: I think that was a big reason that they put in the claim for Juju Brents is that, you know, I think that that could be a very similar role that he's able to play.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_04]: You know,
- 22:54[SPEAKER_04]: Juju Brens is a bigger, more physical corner back.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's what they're asking Jason Marshall Jr.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_04]: to do in that slot position.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's why they went that way over a Mike Hilton.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_04]: That's the vision they're moving towards.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_04]: I think the Juju Brens gives you a player that maybe doesn't have a great NFL tape.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_04]: and has an injury history of his own, but he gives you a player that can do some of the things that Jason Marshall, Jr., is being asked to do.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_04]: So if Marshall is not ready to do it, when we get to week one and do it against the ones or the cults, then you have something that you kind of throw in there.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_04]: You know, the way they've constructed that role, I think is one that would be easy for a newcomer to transition into.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_04]: When we look at, you know, Jason Marshall, Jean are not playing slot corner until partway through camp and then move there's a rookie.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_04]: I think the package for that is probably favorable to be able to bring somebody in new, but I think the big thing for me with the second areas that, you know, everybody was
- 24:04[SPEAKER_04]: worried about the names in the secondary, you know, specifically the corners as we headed into camp.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_04]: But if we had gone into camp and we had resolved Douglas and we had Jack Jones, then I don't think that we'd have nearly the concerns that we've heard.
- 24:21[SPEAKER_04]: And you know, obviously, thanks getting them as late as we did.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_04]: But I think that those two players kind of give you clarity on where the floor of the corner back room is.
- 24:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, all of those guys have the ability to blitz and it's a bigger quarterback room.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_02]: Then years prior, it's a bigger, it's a more physical and much younger.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_02]: You're talking about Jack Jones.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_02]: He's only what, twenty-six.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_02]: Juju Grans is twenty-three years in Mars or Junior is twenty-one.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_02]: A Result Jack Douglas is the veteran.
- 25:01[SPEAKER_02]: I don't expect Result Douglas to get a lot of playing time just yet, but I do think it'll be there on key downs.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_02]: and third downs, I think resoul Douglas, Jason Marshall Jr.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_02]: and juju brends, they all are pretty much interchangeable with the potential to play resoul Douglas a little bit deeper in that third.
- 25:22[SPEAKER_02]: safety position.
- 25:24[SPEAKER_02]: Speaking of safety, we haven't seen a lot out of Dante Trader Jr.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_02]: Just yet, there's some indication of him potentially going on IR.
- 25:32[SPEAKER_02]: Ashton Davis practiced on Thursday, so he seems like he'll be getting closer to starting week one, Micah Fitzpatrick.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, we know he's a starter.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_02]: He's the leader on that.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_02]: I was surprised, Jordan Colbert actually made the roster, but then they want to head and cut him to make some space.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_02]: for candle lamps, so the fifty-three-man roster was not the actual...
- 25:57[SPEAKER_02]: Potential starting week one, fifty three man roster.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_02]: And look, this roster is gonna change from week one to week eight to week, six team, you know, things happen, injuries happen, trades happen, you never know what's gonna happen throughout the season.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_02]: So it's not necessarily finalized.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_02]: All right, as we move on to the linebackers, Coach, you had alluded to KJ for its role on special teams.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_02]: Can you go ahead and talk about that and why he pretty much
- 26:26[SPEAKER_02]: made it over and they had to basically wave chanting tend to who was the first pick of Mike McDaniels first ever draft class.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, we talked with linebackers.
- 26:40[SPEAKER_04]: I think that you know, the four linebackers were pretty much a given, but you know, KJ Brit is more of that a land in Roberts type linebacker in the sense that he is limited, right?
- 26:53[SPEAKER_04]: You can only do certain things well.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_04]: But where he really stood out for me with these the dynamic kickoffs, you know, I think that you can position players on the kickoff team a little better with your directional kicking and.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_04]: KJ Britt is a player, we used to talk about the old wedge busters, the guys that would just fly down there and run through the wall of humanity to try to blow it up.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_04]: That's what I see with him running down the field.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_04]: He is just running through blocks, typically the first or second guy that you're seeing, getting to that returner.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_04]: So I think that even though we may not see a ton of him,
- 27:38[SPEAKER_04]: on the field on defense, right?
- 27:40[SPEAKER_04]: You know, maybe more short yardage or goal line type situations.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_04]: You know, he's still got a good chance of making a big impact on this roster, especially on the kickoff team, and probably going to see him on the punk coverage teams as well.
- 27:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think the biggest thing was really gay junior and KJ Brit making Channing Tindle expendable.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, really gay junior had a phenomenal phenomenal camp.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_02]: uh he wasn't necessarily deep as linebacker for the chiefs but he was the glue guy and i think willy a junior as either the will or sandbacker in this defense especially when they played the nickel sets alongside either Jordan Brooks or Tyrell Dodson or if they play more so like a three down front look
- 28:25[SPEAKER_02]: is going to be a key blitzer on this team.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you can tackle, you can erase those screens.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_02]: He's fast getting down, you know, you can cover sideline to sideline.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's probably one of your Swiss army knives in the linebacker position.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we talk about this defense to be very versatile, very multiple from the secondary and make a Fitzpatrick that can play the slot.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: He can play on the line as cramage.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_02]: He can drop back deep.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_02]: Will engage you, and it is the same to have a guy.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_02]: alongside Jordan Brooks that can potentially be interchangeable, but will engage Jr.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: will primarily have more of that past-rush prowess primarily as the looper or sometimes picker on those stunts especially if he's along the line as crimage and I think even in third and shorts where you can just
- 29:18[SPEAKER_02]: You know, get downhill or if it's like a stretcher zone play, you can shoot through the gap, find through the gap, you know, go around those offensive linemen, get those hand fighting techniques, and then get right into the backfield.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I agree with all that.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_04]: You know, you're talking about the versatility.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_04]: There's we move over to the the outside line backers.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's where you see that as well.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_04]: Obviously got the starters in jail and Philips Bradley job and the chop Robinson is going to be more of your past rush specialist, but he's got, you know, he showed the ability last year to be able to be a three down player.
- 29:54[SPEAKER_04]: But one of the things that I had noticed was
- 29:58[SPEAKER_04]: You know, it seems like Anthony weaver and even coordinators before have kind of tried to play Jalen Phillips in a stand up role at times.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_04]: And that's something that when you look at all of the edge players that were cut, you really didn't have anybody that did that.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_04]: But I did notice that the newcomer Matthew Jude on in that third preseason game, he was used in that stand up role.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_04]: So I think that he was more of a, you know, maybe
- 30:28[SPEAKER_04]: getting some of those early down run reps out of the way, but also a player that allows you to keep whatever that package is that has fill up standing up.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_04]: I think that Jude on allows you to be able to keep some of that in there, should jail and fill up some this time again.
- 30:44[SPEAKER_04]: And then you know, last, last outside linebacker edge player on the roster there, Cameron Good, I think that strictly came down to special teams, right?
- 30:52[SPEAKER_04]: But you know, if you are the
- 30:54[SPEAKER_04]: the fifth edge player on the roster, then you better be a core special teams player and, you know, at least a decent run down player.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_04]: I think that those are the deciding factors like when you, when you compare him to a grace and Murphy, I don't think the grace and Murphy or McClendon had the run, the run game ability that
- 31:16[SPEAKER_04]: Cameron Good does and you don't you don't bring in your fifth eddresher to be a past rush specialist when you have Jalen Phillips Bradley Chub and Chopper Robinson all ahead of him you bring in that player to you know let them you know get a breather on the sideline and play some rundowns but then you have to have that key special teams role and that's why I think that Cameron Good got the nod over some of these other guys
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and Cameron Good also can fit the run pretty decently much better than guys who are releasing wave like Quentin Bell, Moe Camaro and Jason Murphy.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_02]: Jason Murphy was just a pure past Russia and he just pretty much became expendable.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_02]: I thought Derek McClendon had done enough.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_02]: To actually make the fifty three-man roster, I think you might have made the practice a lot if you can confirm that for me.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_02]: That could potentially be a call of if one of those past pressures do go down.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_02]: And one thing you mentioned about the stand up role is that
- 32:18[SPEAKER_02]: all of those guys that made the fifty-three can cover the flats and our athletic enough to get down the field and make the tackle.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_02]: What I mean athletic enough, I mean they are fast enough and can cover sideline to sideline and you know just get after the ball carrier.
- 32:37[SPEAKER_02]: As we move on to the defensive line, they keep six defensive linemen.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_02]: You know for a defense that
- 32:45[SPEAKER_02]: doesn't employ a lot of four-man friends.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: I think it comes to be said that this defense of line and how they employ these fronts might be a bit nontraditional based on some things we saw during practices, joint practices and camp.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think you could have
- 33:11[SPEAKER_02]: three, so four of these defensive linemen in on early downs.
- 33:16[SPEAKER_02]: And one to two of your edge defenders or past rushes is well, where you could have a five front, or maybe you could have somewhat of a hybrid bear front on those early downs.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_02]: And if you get to third and long, you just release your three to four edge defenders.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_02]: It goes to say that all three rookies made it.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: And I think it's primarily because of the run defense.
- 33:44[SPEAKER_02]: All three of those guys do really, really well, up against the run.
- 33:48[SPEAKER_02]: And I was deep diving some of their advanced metrics in terms of all, twenty twenty five rookie drafted and undrafted.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: Kenneth Grant and Jordan Phillips were in the top eight in the PFF run grade.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_02]: Alex Hunt, Huntley was thirty
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: Zeke Bigger's was thirty first and terms of run stop percentage Jordan Phillips was eleven Kenneth Grant was twenty second Zeke Bigger's was twenty ninth Alex Huntley was thirty first and obviously we know Alex Huntley was waived.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that you know what you were saying there about the non-traditional fronts I think is going to be
- 34:34[SPEAKER_04]: exactly what we're going to see.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's why they really bulked up that defensive interior.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_04]: I think that the goal is to win those early down run reps and put the offense in a second and third and long.
- 34:51[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's why you see six defensive linemen on the roster.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I've kind of talked about this before that I feel like the defense is going to be ten players that
- 35:03[SPEAKER_04]: you kind of know who they are.
- 35:05[SPEAKER_04]: And then one player that's kind of that similar to the F position on offense.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_04]: And on those early run downs, it's going to be a no stack.
- 35:12[SPEAKER_04]: Let's going to be your Benito Jones coming in as a, you know, a heavy package.
- 35:17[SPEAKER_04]: And then, you know, as you get into the past rush stuff, right?
- 35:21[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe it's chop Robinson coming in.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_04]: We've talked about the, you know, the three edge
- 35:26[SPEAKER_04]: You know, packages, they've, they've worked on.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe it's Willie Gay coming in, right?
- 35:31[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe that's where your Jason Marshall comes in or with the safety's right, Ashden Davis.
- 35:37[SPEAKER_04]: That's what that eleventh player is going to be.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_04]: But I think that they are going to really commit on early run downs to stopping the run.
- 35:44[SPEAKER_04]: And I think the way that they're going to do that is going to be to have a Benito Jones in there as a nose and having
- 35:53[SPEAKER_04]: sealer and grant playing more of a four or five technique and really try to, you know, clog up the middle of it.
- 36:00[SPEAKER_04]: And then keep the linebackers free and let them run, right?
- 36:03[SPEAKER_04]: We can go back to the, you know, the Zach Thomas days when he had Tim Bowens and Darrell Gardner in front of him just eating up blocks.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_04]: And that's hopefully similar to what we're going to get with those three big guys up front and letting Jordan Brooks and T dot, you know, be able to run around and make those plays.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_04]: You know you did mention that Alex Huntley was cut and he was brought back on the practice squad and then Matthew Butler who I think was a little bit of a surprise being that six guy when there was a lot of people that was talking about Matt Dickerson who was not only waved
- 36:40[SPEAKER_04]: but also not brought back onto the practice squad.
- 36:43[SPEAKER_04]: And I think he ended up going to the Jacksonville practice squad.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_04]: But I think that I don't think there's really any surprises outside of Matthew Butler, but I really like that room.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_04]: And I like the future potential of that.
- 36:55[SPEAKER_04]: Like he said, three rookies there to be able to watch that group, grow together, as Zack Sealer, some day ages out, right?
- 37:05[SPEAKER_04]: Don't want to use that R word yet for him.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_04]: But as we transition to the next phase, having these three guys that are hopefully four or five years into their career really sets things up for the future nicely.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and maybe in the four, five years, would they even be able to retain all three of those defensive linemen, do we potentially get somewhat of a Christian will gets type of situation with either Kenneth, Grant, Jordan, Phillips, maybe even Seek, Biggers.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think one thing to note is that, I think this is the first time in a while, at least a long time, that all of the dolphins, rookies,
- 37:47[SPEAKER_02]: made the initial fifty three-man roster.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: None of them were put to the practice squad.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_02]: None of them were also waived.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that speaks to
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: the quality of players they selected, not on the field, but also on the field.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we did this entire series and I just did a specific podcast on these rookies where their play on the field was good, specifically Ali Gordon and Jason Marshall Jr.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_02]: But even the three defensive linemen, like you could see even up against these backups,
- 38:27[SPEAKER_02]: They were giving maximum effort.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_02]: They wanted it to be shown like, hey, even though we might potentially be starters, we still need to bring that same energies, that same focus on the field.
- 38:40[SPEAKER_02]: But it's more so off the field where what they asked them to do,
- 38:45[SPEAKER_02]: They're doing it.
- 38:46[SPEAKER_02]: They pushed Jason Marshall Jr to be able to play in the slot.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_02]: They pushed Ali Gordon to lose a little bit of weight at least ten pounds from a Krisger said in his press conference and he did just that.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_02]: Ali also needed some more practice in past pro reps.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_02]: Preseason week three, we saw that as well.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: Join practices.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: I saw that as well.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_02]: He was improving on that as well.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_02]: Offensive line, Jonas Avenue.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_02]: He's at his ups and downs.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_02]: But with his mentality, just trying his best to make sure to attend by lower does not get hit initially when we heard him.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_02]: and his presser post draft and even during training camp.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he needs to work a little bit on his press pro skills, but his run blocking is there.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_02]: Man, his run blocking is there.
- 39:39[SPEAKER_02]: Jordan Phillips had a lot of highlight reels in the preseason.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: Can it's grand while he did not get a lot of reps and preseason.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_02]: He was chasing down guys that were four, five, six, seven yards down the field.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_02]: I think
- 39:53[SPEAKER_02]: The only thing that's concerning for me is Dante Trader Jr.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_02]: hasn't gotten a lot of reps, but when he did, he made plays in the backfield and then run a game up against the Jaguars.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_02]: I just think that these guys are bringing the physicality and mental fortitude that could change the trajectory of this dolphins team in the next two years.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and I like to think that a lot of that has to do with the topic that we kind of started off the show with.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_04]: And that's the continuity.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_04]: of Anthony Weaver and Mikeudeno knowing exactly what they wanted.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_04]: Like even if you go back to last year Anthony Weaver saying that it wasn't until week three when the entire coaching staff was all in cohesion as far as what they were trying to do.
- 40:45[SPEAKER_04]: So you're drafting players before that without understanding what exactly you're trying to do, then it makes it a little more difficult to get those players to fit.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_04]: But as we're heading into year two of the Anthony Weaver defense in the year.
- 40:59[SPEAKER_04]: four of the Mike McDaniel offense, right?
- 41:02[SPEAKER_04]: We went into the draft knowing exactly what they were trying to do on both sides of the ball.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that that's a big reason that you're seeing all of those draft picks thick because you knew exactly the vision that you were looking for as you were heading into that draft.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_04]: And there's going to be things that change slightly as you move into your all season and through the regular season.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_04]: But I think it makes it a lot easier to be able to pick your groceries as
- 41:29[SPEAKER_04]: I think it was Bill Parcell said right when you when you have an idea of what you want to want to make with those groceries.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah and I think with this continuity I think it might be a safe that that Mike McDaniel might be staying here one more year even if things
- 41:46[SPEAKER_02]: might not turn out for what they expect and potentially seem for Anthony.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_02]: We very if he does not get a head coaching position, but that's pretty much it for us.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_02]: Here folks coach Eric.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for being a great co-host and thank you guys for listening to us here on Scouting the Finns part of the three archery podcast.
- 42:08[SPEAKER_02]: I'll support also part of the five reason sports network.
- 42:13[SPEAKER_02]: As always, y'all go Finns, baby.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_01]: Bye.
