- 0:00The whole country was told to turn off the lights for Felix
- 0:04Dennis. They were already off.
- 0:07There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:10Chad #12107 to upgrade your middle game today by telling
- 0:14yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:16you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:18This message is dedicated to Charlie Smith.
- 0:21Here's the upgrade. You may feel like you've run out
- 0:24of options, but upgraded thinking knows you've only run
- 0:26out of the easy ones. Here's the story.
- 0:30It's the winter of 1974 and Britain is falling apart.
- 0:35Coal miners are on strike. Oil prices have exploded.
- 0:39The government puts businesses on a three day week to save
- 0:41electricity. Television goes dark at 10:30 at
- 0:44night. One minister even suggests
- 0:46people learn to shave in the dark.
- 0:49A young man named Felix Dennis is trying to start a publishing
- 0:52company with no money at this time.
- 0:55He says the shortage was nothing new to him.
- 0:57His electricity had already been cut off weeks earlier, so at the
- 1:00gas he couldn't pay the bills. He's living in an unheated flat
- 1:04behind a sweatshop in London. To stay warm, he pulls broken
- 1:08furniture out of the trash and burns it in the fireplace.
- 1:12His girlfriend has a normal job and she tells him to quit and
- 1:15get one too, but he won't, so she leaves.
- 1:19Years later he wrote this quote. That was the secret ingredient.
- 1:23I would not take no for an answer.
- 1:25I would not give in. I was going to be rich somehow,
- 1:28some way, and I would not retreat to the safety of a
- 1:31decent job until I was starved out of house and home.
- 1:33End Quote. He didn't pretend it was noble.
- 1:36He called those the worst months of his life.
- 1:39They were pure misery. It was like bashing his head
- 1:41against the brick wall. But looking back, he suspected
- 1:45it was his finest moment. Thomas Edison is credible
- 1:48credited with saying when you've exhausted all possibilities,
- 1:52remember this, you haven't that broke young man built Dennis
- 1:57Publishing which eventually had 50 magazines.
- 1:59He was one of the richest self-made men in Britain.
- 2:03Near the end of his life he started planting trees, not a
- 2:06few a forest, over 1,000,000 saplings in the English
- 2:09countryside. And when he died in 2014, he
- 2:12left most of his fortune to make sure the planting never stops.
- 2:17I love that juxtaposition. The man who once burned
- 2:20scavenged wood just to survive the winter spent his last year's
- 2:24planting a forest that will outlive everyone who knew him.
- 2:30I think that's what persisting looks like.
- 2:32The better story to tell yourself is I haven't run out of
- 2:35options. I'm only run out of the easy
- 2:37ones. You haven't exhausted all
- 2:40possibilities, you've just exhausted the comfortable ones.
- 2:44The real ones are still out there waiting for the person who
- 2:48won't retreat. You know Winston Churchill,
- 2:51after his famous Never Give in line, continues quote.
- 2:55Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
- 3:00Before them, obstacles vanish into thin air and mountains
- 3:03crumble into atoms. Great work is never done by
- 3:06temperamental geniuses, but by obstinate donkey men.
- 3:12Felix Dennis was just a donkey man.
- 3:16He never gave up. That's what persisting looks
- 3:19like. Tell me a story of persisting
- 3:22through a dark season to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 3:26Send someone a text and tell them you haven't run out of
- 3:29options. You've only run out of the easy
- 3:31ones. Keep going.
