- 0:30This day they came to see DiMaggio, Greenberg, and someone named Bob Feller.
- 0:35And a new sports sensation, just a kid named Ted Williams.
- 0:39Ted Williams had joined the American League in Boston two years before.
- 0:43And he had pitchers still trying to find the formula for getting him out.
- 0:47Because as this All-Star Game approached, he was holding a fabulous 4-0-5 batting mark.
- 0:53Now naturally this didn't make the National League starter feel too secure.
- 0:57I opened the pitching for the American League, successfully cutting them down by pitching to nine men the first three innings.
- 1:03The National League took care of us in a similar fashion.
- 1:05Since then, as Paul DeRinger gave up a run in the fourth, and Ted Williams had another American League tally across with a double in the sixth.
- 1:12Meanwhile, Archie Vaughn of the Pittsburgh Pirates held the hottest National League bat and slammed a pair of home runs.
- 1:18So the American League came to bat in the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:21They were trailing in the All-Star Game by a score of 5-2.
- 1:25Edgar Smith held the National League scoreless in the top of the ninth.
- 1:28Paso retired to first American Leaguer at the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:32But Cleveland's Ken Keltner in a pinch hit roll singled off shortstop Eddie Miller's glove.
- 1:37Cecil Travis of Washington was next and he walked, sending Keltner to second and bringing up DiMaggio to the plate.
- 1:44By now the fans were starting for the exits.
- 1:47But at the same time, almost en masse, they were yelling for Joe to hit a home run.
- 1:51Instead, he sent a grasscutter at Miller, which had double play written all over it.
- 1:56Miller scooped the ball up, fired to second to force Travis.
- 1:59DiMaggio hovered was safe at first.
- 2:01There were two outs, two runners on base.
- 2:04The score, National League 5, American League 4.
- 2:07Next batter up, the kid, Ted Williams.
- 2:09We'll finish the game in 60 seconds.
- 2:11Ted went through his little ritual, which has now become so familiar.
- 2:14His left foot scuffed a little dirt.
- 2:16Then he bounced on the balls of both feet.
- 2:18He squeezed his bat as he waited for the first pitch from Paso.
- 2:21Foul, strike one.
- 2:23Two more pitches were wide and Ted wanted no part of them.
- 2:27Paso fired again and this time Ted swung.
- 2:30The bat cracked and the ball sailed far and high into the right field seats.
- 2:35Keltner, DiMaggio, and of course the kid, Ted Williams, scored.
- 2:39The American League had won, 7-5.
- 2:42Nat Williams' homer that day was but a prelude to many, many more.
- 2:45He was so hit to break up a game before he retired.
