Iliad Fragment Found in 1600-Year-Old Mummy | Science News
Archaeologists in Egypt just unearthed a mind-blowing discovery: a fragment of Homer’s Iliad, specifically the “Catalogue of Ships,” tucked inside a 1600-year-old mummy at Oxyrhynchus. Found resting on the mummy’s stomach during the embalming process, this is the first time a literary text—not a ritual spell—has been discovered in this context. The find, part of Spain’s long-running excavation since 1992, adds a thrilling new chapter to how ancient Egyptians integrated literature into burial rites.
