Latest / What's Your (Least) Favorite Scary Movie? / #212: Saw X (2023)
Transcript
- 0:06Hello. What's your least favorite scary
- 0:08movie? Epic bad luck.
- 0:12Welcome to Watch Your Least Favorite Scary Movie, The
- 0:15podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and the
- 0:18absurd, and all of our favorite. And least favorite?
- 0:21Scary movies. Because we believe every horror
- 0:23movie, right? If he has his fan base.
- 0:24Even if we don't always get it. My name is Travis.
- 0:26My name is. Jesse and welcome back everybody
- 0:28for our finale for now of the Saw franchise.
- 0:32Fornale. Fornale finale of the saw.
- 0:37I can't think of another rhyme for that, but yeah, we're we're
- 0:40we're doing socks today. Oh, you're you're proud of
- 0:43yourself. I'm very.
- 0:44Proud of myself. I couldn't have even even on A
- 0:46roll. Yeah, OK, we're talking about
- 0:48socks today. Which?
- 0:50That's what we call the movie, but it's Saw X, Yeah.
- 0:53So the 10th Saw movie. But before we get into any of
- 0:57that, Jesse, do you have anything you'd like to announce?
- 1:00Yes, budget tier Patrons, as you know, one of your perks is a
- 1:04monthly bonus episode, and we went to go see a little movie in
- 1:10theaters this weekend and decided that we're going to do a
- 1:13review of this before we ever bring it to the main channel
- 1:16because we do intend to cover this series at some point.
- 1:19That would be the Strangers franchise.
- 1:21We saw Strangers Chapter One this weekend and we have some
- 1:25thoughts and we figured we'd record them and share them with
- 1:29our budget bubbies. Yeah.
- 1:30So preview. If you want to hear that you can
- 1:33sign up to be a budget to your patron for a single month.
- 1:36The link is down at the very bottom of the show.
- 1:38Notes take you right to it. All right, other than that we
- 1:43have our poll results from last week's movie which as we said
- 1:47prom month. So everything is choose your
- 1:50prom date from the movie we talked about the Prowler.
- 1:52So the options that we had for that were Pam, Officer, London,
- 1:57Lisa and Sherry. So over on Instagram, nobody
- 2:00picked Pam, nobody picked London, 50% Lisa, 50% Sherry.
- 2:06Meanwhile on Twitter, 25% Pam, Nobody London, 25% Lisa, 50%
- 2:14Sherry. OK, I wonder if the people that
- 2:17are picking Sherry just actually don't want to go to prom?
- 2:20See, I I'm torn. I was going to go between Lisa
- 2:25and Sherry. Lisa seems like she'd be a fun
- 2:27time at the prom. Mr. Still, young man.
- 2:29Yeah, well, I'm, I don't have to worry about that.
- 2:34So, like, I, I don't know. She seemed like she was having a
- 2:37fun time. Travis, Here's the thing though,
- 2:39and I say this because I've been to many a dance with you.
- 2:42Lisa's going to make you dance. Are you prepared to boogie at
- 2:45the amount she requires you to boogie?
- 2:47Well, if I drink that spike punch, I think I'll be OK.
- 2:50OK, that's that's usually been a good motivator for me to dance
- 2:53at parties. Can I pick Pam in her first
- 2:55dress? OK, sure.
- 2:58I was also going to say Sherry, though, because I like the idea
- 3:01of just like spending the time of prom in the shower with, you
- 3:05know. Seemingly endless hot water.
- 3:08Yeah, it sounds great. That's the dream.
- 3:09It'll get cold eventually. Maybe not at not in 12 hours.
- 3:13We have at least. 12 hours worth of hot water.
- 3:16See, that's the thing. We're going to put it to the
- 3:17test. We're going to see how long we
- 3:19can do that for. But you're going.
- 3:20To be so pruney before then I. Don't care, dude, you got to
- 3:24somebody's got to do it. Final verdict.
- 3:27I'm going to go with Lisa because I think overall that's a
- 3:30better night, but Sherry seems like it could be fun too.
- 3:34Let's see how far we could take this thing.
- 3:36Let's see how far we can take the water heater OK OK all right
- 3:41so that's it for the pulse. So let's get into our coverage
- 3:45of saw X OK so saw released September 29th, 2023.
- 3:52We watched it on our 4K but. Our what?
- 3:56Our 4K, I'm not going to, I'm not going to say it.
- 3:59I, I've realized I actually had a moment where like I thought to
- 4:03myself, like, I've been really saying the fork thing a little
- 4:05bit too much lately. And I don't want that to be how
- 4:08because I read things like that sometimes now too.
- 4:11So like now I'm, I'm trying to correct myself and get my brain
- 4:15fixed with that. So the 4K.
- 4:17Fun fact, everybody, I've ruined the way he pronounces Duany the
- 4:21Rock Johnson's name. Yeah, I don't want this to be
- 4:24another one of those. I want to be able to correct
- 4:26this one when I can see the signs of.
- 4:27It and I've also gotten him to accidentally say Mark Dimaco.
- 4:31Yeah, that one. Yeah, you do a good job.
- 4:34I don't want this to be another case of that.
- 4:36So we watched it on our 4K. If you want to stream this, you
- 4:40can stream it on Stars and additional add-ons from other
- 4:44services like Hulu and Prime. If you subscribe through Stars
- 4:47through those, you can also rent it on Prime and Apple, you know,
- 4:50in normal places. Written by Peter Goldfinger and
- 4:54Josh Stolberg. A little bubby duo there,
- 4:58directed by Kevin Groiter, The fucking OG of the Saw series at
- 5:02this point. Music.
- 5:04Charlie Klauser, of course. He's done every single.
- 5:06One of them also the OG of the saw.
- 5:07Exactly. Yeah, he's like the absolute
- 5:10ogiest of Ogs there. What bands he from again?
- 5:139 Inch Nails? Yeah, OK.
- 5:15Special effects makeup done by the team Fractured Effects,
- 5:19which is led by Ozzie Alvarez and Kimberly Beck, was also a
- 5:23big name involved in the process.
- 5:25And we just talked about them. Kevin Fever too, yeah.
- 5:29Yep, yeah, those, those people know their shit.
- 5:32It was funny. I did a trailer for Kevin Fever
- 5:36too, and I used a quip of that movie of him doing the
- 5:40fingernail thing and somebody on TikTok said you're fucking evil
- 5:43for making me watch this. I think everybody should see it.
- 5:47Everybody needs to appreciate the work that went into that.
- 5:51OK cast. We have our man returning,
- 5:55another OG of the Saw series, Tobin Bell returning as John
- 5:59Kramer, another OG, Shawnee Smith as Amanda.
- 6:03All right, now here I'm going to try Cinovay Makodi Wund as
- 6:08Cecilia Peterson. She is like actually Norwegian.
- 6:12I believe they actually got somebody for that because they
- 6:14wanted it to actually look the part.
- 6:16Stephen Brand as Parker Sears, Renata Vaca as Gabriella, Joshua
- 6:21Camaro as Diego, Octavio Hinojosa, Hinojosa.
- 6:27I don't know. I'm trying to do the correct
- 6:30pronunciation as Matteo. I would.
- 6:32Think it was Hinojosa. Paulette Hernandez as Valentina
- 6:35and Jorge Bracino as Carlos. OK, All right, Jesse, time for
- 6:40our favorite game on the show. Budget.
- 6:43Oh, our budget. What do?
- 6:45You think? I think this one was budget.
- 6:50I feel like it was a big comeback.
- 6:52OK. Yeah, you would think that it
- 6:54had a lot of money behind it and it had budget levels, but it was
- 6:5813 million, so it wasn't like blowing it out of the water or
- 7:01anything. But I was still correct and I
- 7:04was technically correct. Which is the best kind of
- 7:06correct? Yeah, you're right.
- 7:08Yeah, technically you're right, Which is the best kind of being
- 7:10right. Also, opening box office
- 7:1418,000,000. Not as big as I would have
- 7:16expected for a Saw movie. Yeah, worldwide gross, 111
- 7:20million. That's a little bit better.
- 7:22We're getting there. IMDb score 6.6 out of 10.
- 7:26Well, I think some of the problem too was this.
- 7:29The release date got shifted because of Five Nights at
- 7:31Freddy's. Was that really what happened
- 7:33with them? Yeah, they didn't want to
- 7:35compete with it. That was a that was a wise
- 7:37choice. Isn't that fucking weird that
- 7:39Yeah. So they moved it had to was
- 7:41worried about Five Nights at Freddy's.
- 7:44I mean, you got to recognize it because it's a big property, but
- 7:47still. Like SAW is also a fucking big
- 7:49property. If it's barely post Labor Day,
- 7:52it must be saw how it that's what they say.
- 7:56They should have done the Barbenheimer method and done
- 7:59like a five nights. It sucks, yes.
- 8:02Yeah, I don't know. Five nights in jigsaws.
- 8:05Five nights in jigsaws, Yeah. Oh dude, that could be good.
- 8:08I'd like you. I would like that crossover.
- 8:11You get these like, little animatronics and they have like,
- 8:13animatronic old traps. Fuck yeah.
- 8:15OK. All right.
- 8:17I don't necessarily have like a theme for this year, but I went
- 8:22with like big releases that also released.
- 8:25So you know, Saw X was like a big event for the war people.
- 8:30So I don't know 20. 23 I feel like was trying really, really
- 8:34hard to follow strongly to 2022 and it just it was a losing
- 8:38game. 2022 is the one that beat in this decade so far I I
- 8:42nothing has really competed with it yet.
- 8:44This year especially, it's just been kind of flat, I feel like.
- 8:48Yeah, I've not really been super excited with most of the stuff
- 8:50for this year either. Maxine's coming out though I am.
- 8:53Excited for that. Yeah, I'm, I'm very excited for
- 8:56that. OK, so the first movie, by the
- 8:59way, we've not watched any of these.
- 9:01OK, that's interesting. I don't know, maybe we can watch
- 9:05some of these. The Pope's Exorcist.
- 9:07Now this one was on my mind. Did you do this because?
- 9:10Our buddy Russell Crowe. Yeah, because Russell Crowe and
- 9:13because I consistently refer to Parker is not Russell Crowe.
- 9:16Every time we launch this I. Didn't, but that's a good
- 9:19connection right there. OK.
- 9:21And we're getting somewhere so yeah.
- 9:23The Pope's Exorcist released April 5th, 2023 with an $18
- 9:28million budget. Worldwide growth 77,000,006.1 on
- 9:33IMDb. I believe they're doing a sequel
- 9:35to it. They are.
- 9:36I whenever I saw that that was announced and I saw him as I
- 9:41guess he is the Pope's exorcist, I'm going to assume I thought
- 9:44that it was. It looked like it was just going
- 9:46to be a dud. I wanted.
- 9:48Two people to like it. He survived the ending of
- 9:51Unhinged, had a religious awakening, and he actually
- 9:56discovered he was possessed the whole time, so he learned about
- 10:00exorcism. And I want this one to start
- 10:02with him. With with a Texas accent, no.
- 10:04No, Start with the accent that he had throughout most of that
- 10:07movie and then shift to a Texas Southern accent.
- 10:10That's how you know the demon's back.
- 10:14There we go, All right, the next movie was The Nun 2 We.
- 10:19Haven't even seen the first one. Yeah, we haven't even seen the
- 10:21first one. I don't know.
- 10:23I got enough of it in The Conjuring 2.
- 10:25I didn't need a whole movie about it, personally.
- 10:27Creepy, but I think it's better you sparingly rather than making
- 10:32a full movie focused on it that. That franchise knows nothing
- 10:36about moderation. No.
- 10:38That's why we have 7 Annabelle movies.
- 10:41Yeah, they were supposed to do more spin offs too.
- 10:43So we're going to have one of the Crooked Man, and that never
- 10:46materialized, I don't think. The Crooked Man I could see
- 10:48being a creepy one. Yeah, but the but.
- 10:51Also. There for like 5 seconds.
- 10:53Yeah, I'm also worried that they would do like.
- 10:56So I have complicated feelings about the movie Mama because I
- 10:59think it's excellent until you actually see Mama, and then it
- 11:02ruins it because it looks like Return the Slob and I just can't
- 11:06with it. Yeah, you gotta be careful.
- 11:09So I feel like the Crooked Man. Yeah, it would have to really,
- 11:12really thread that needle. We've already seen vaguely what
- 11:15the Crooked Man looks like, and we don't need to see more than
- 11:16that. But I think we can have a little
- 11:18bit of creepiness with it. I.
- 11:19Think he could? Maybe like an 80 minute movie.
- 11:22Yeah. If you do short and kind of
- 11:23don't have him on screen a whole lot, then yeah.
- 11:26Once again, The Conjuring franchise.
- 11:28They just fucking can't. They got no chill.
- 11:31They Yeah. So The Nun 2 released September
- 11:348th 23 with a $38.5 million budgets worldwide gross 269 and
- 11:42a half million dollars IMDb 5.6. So that's why they make a bunch
- 11:47of them. Yeah, I mean I.
- 11:48Get it? It makes money and it's also one
- 11:51of those franchises that you don't have to be like a horror
- 11:54fan to enjoy. It's very entry level, like
- 11:57casual horror, and that's not to like.
- 12:00I'm not. Or anything like that.
- 12:02Like, no. And I'm not saying anything
- 12:03about people that love that franchise.
- 12:05I'm just saying it's a more accessible kind of horror movie.
- 12:07Like next week we're talking about society.
- 12:10That's not for everyone. No, I wouldn't recommend it to
- 12:13everyone. I would, I will.
- 12:16I'm going to. Everybody needs to watch that.
- 12:19Movie, but yeah, it's just it's it's one of those.
- 12:23OK, so for our final movie we have one that I am just morbidly
- 12:30curious to watch. Oh boy.
- 12:32The Exorcist believer. Oh, I am very curious about it.
- 12:37I know you're a little bit, you're kind of protective of
- 12:40David Gordon Green. I'm not necessarily protective
- 12:43of him. I'm a little bit wary of this
- 12:45stuff now. OK, well, you were protective of
- 12:47him after the first couple of Halloween movies when people
- 12:50started getting upset, and then you saw ends and you didn't like
- 12:53that. But you also know that he works
- 12:55on registers, gemstones. So I feel like you've been more
- 13:00in defense of him than a lot of people.
- 13:02No, yeah, he's he's done Pineapple Express.
- 13:05Love that movie. He did Halloween 2018 and
- 13:08Halloween Kills, who love both of those Righteous Gemstones are
- 13:11amazing series, but he really fucking dropped the ball hard
- 13:15with Halloween Ends and that really kind of tarnished how I
- 13:18look at him. And then he did this right here
- 13:21and I've not seen it. So I would like to give it a
- 13:25fair shake, but I've never been one that's been huge on the
- 13:28Exorcist franchise anyway. So it's not like I'm going to be
- 13:32like Halloween ends, be pissed off about what they're doing
- 13:36with Isuzu or whatever. You know, like I, I think I'll
- 13:39be OK if they get a little bit experimental with it.
- 13:43I don't know, I might like it, but a lot of people hate this
- 13:46one. Let's get into that.
- 13:47So that released October 6th, 2020.
- 13:50Three, $30 million budget, $137 million gross and a 4.8 on IMDb.
- 13:58So it's kind of like right there down the middle.
- 14:01And again, The Exorcist is one of those movies.
- 14:03It's seen as a classic and a lot of people that aren't even
- 14:06horror fans have seen it. Yeah.
- 14:09So that's. It's one of the biggest movies,
- 14:11like horror movies ever. Yeah.
- 14:13So we'll give it a shot one day. OK, so I've got tag lines just.
- 14:19Multiple 20. The most?
- 14:22Technical of multiple. Which is technically true?
- 14:26The best kind I. Don't what?
- 14:28Yours didn't. No, Travis, I hope you, I hope
- 14:31you stretched before that reach. OK, the first one is witness the
- 14:37return of Jigsaw. Now this one I have a problem
- 14:41with because because. It's a.
- 14:43Well, Jigsaw never went anywhere.
- 14:45Jigsaw is like an ongoing thing. Jigsaw was also Amanda.
- 14:49It was also Hoffman. It's also the fucking guy we
- 14:53forgot about in Jigsaw the movie.
- 14:56Named Jigsaw, yeah. So, you know, like it could be
- 14:59anything. Now the return of John Kramer.
- 15:02Different thing. Yeah, but also because it's
- 15:05falling in a completely different place in the timeline,
- 15:07that makes it confusing too 'cause are we talking about it
- 15:09in or out of universe? Like if we're talking about it
- 15:12out of universe, like us as an audience, if this is 1/4 wall
- 15:15breaky tagline, then yeah, OK. Return of Jigsaw to theaters.
- 15:20It's only been like a two year break, but it's fine.
- 15:22I I. Think that that's what they're
- 15:24going for, which, yeah, you're right.
- 15:25It's kind of absurd. Like, whoa, we're really
- 15:27bringing them back this time. Like you guys never let them go.
- 15:30They were talking about that on pod lead on the Cycle 23.
- 15:33VH One picked up the series and they've tried to make it like it
- 15:37was this big deal, but it was like less than a year break
- 15:40between Cycle 22 and Cycle 23. You know what?
- 15:43Now that you're. Seeing this this is.
- 15:44Actually making me a little bit more upset with this because
- 15:46we've had him in every fucking movie since he died except for
- 15:50Spiral. That's the only one he's not
- 15:52been in. It's not that.
- 15:54Big and he almost was in. Give us the Kramer cash cut.
- 15:59Oh yeah, the Kramer cash cut. Oh, man.
- 16:02Go. Just go listen to our Spiral
- 16:04episode for details on that. Yeah, yeah.
- 16:06That even if you don't like the movie, you might like our
- 16:08coverage. I don't know.
- 16:10OK, so the second one very much makes me think that they were
- 16:15speaking as like out of universe.
- 16:17To the audience. Yeah, because this one says the
- 16:2010th chapter cuts through time. OK, Yeah, I I appreciate that
- 16:26straightforwardness. Like here we go.
- 16:29Yeah, you. Got to tell you guys because
- 16:30they never, like, outright say it.
- 16:33Yeah, I mean, they have like, dead characters, but this is
- 16:35like Saw. So like, that's not really
- 16:37anything new to most people. I'm going to say like, I find it
- 16:40very refreshing when they're upfront about what a movie is
- 16:45like. So letting us know that we're
- 16:47it's not linear from what we've had so far.
- 16:50So I appreciate that because there have been a couple of
- 16:52movies that have been like with the Mean Girls musical, it was
- 16:56not marketed as a musical. So if you didn't know it was a
- 16:58musical, you weren't going to know it was a musical.
- 17:01That really surprised me because that was like the whole thing.
- 17:04And and spoiler for our Patreon episode, but same with the
- 17:09Strangers chapter one. For everybody out there, it's a
- 17:13remake. I did not know this.
- 17:16Travis knew this. Because of this, we had very
- 17:19different expectations and experiences of seeing it I'm.
- 17:23Kind of shocked that I was the only person that knew that.
- 17:25Yeah, you were the only one. We had an entire row of people I
- 17:29none of us knew. I outright avoided things about
- 17:33that movie and I knew that. Like, I don't know, I thought
- 17:39that everybody knew that, but I. Guess no.
- 17:41The only thing I'd seen was like witness the origin of the
- 17:44Strangers, so I assumed it was a prequel.
- 17:48Not so. This isn't that episode.
- 17:51Yeah, we'll save it for our Patriot, but I'm just saying
- 17:53it's refreshing to hear a tagline where it's like, by the
- 17:56way, we've got John Kramer back and we're going back in time.
- 17:59I I like that. Although maybe somebody would
- 18:04not that that's not really outright saying it.
- 18:06That's maybe somebody's like, man, they're getting real
- 18:08ambitious. They're like actually taking on
- 18:09time travel this time. I don't know, like maybe that's
- 18:13what somebody could think. They're like they're doing time
- 18:15travel instead of going to outer space like, which is what you're
- 18:18supposed to do on the 10th installment.
- 18:20We've all bought into the bullshit that John Kramer is
- 18:22able to make these fucking mechanisms out of fucking toilet
- 18:25paper. But, you know, like, let's all
- 18:27just kind of agreed that he could maybe accomplish time
- 18:30travel too. I mean, maybe.
- 18:32We we don't know. OK, fun facts.
- 18:36So all this right here is from the documentary, the making of
- 18:40documentary that's on the 4K. So they did a whole deep dive.
- 18:44Straight from the horses mouth. Straight from their mouths.
- 18:47Nay. So saw nine was what this was
- 18:53originally gonna be. So the original.
- 18:55So they were just gonna kick out Spiral completely?
- 18:59Well, OK, so saw 9 back in January 2018, Josh Stolberg and
- 19:06Pete Goldfinger were working on this.
- 19:08Movie. Yeah, I talked about that when
- 19:09we discussed Spiral. Which is why I was kind of
- 19:11surprised that you said that. So you.
- 19:13Literally told us about this like.
- 19:15Listen, I'm going to cut through time and remember when I spoke
- 19:19about this and now I feel like a dumb dumb, so it's OK.
- 19:22So okay, yeah, Saw Nine, it was going to be Saw Nine that the
- 19:25original title was Saw Nine, John Kramer, That's what this
- 19:29movie was. Going to be called.
- 19:30They were going to give it in a subtitle.
- 19:33Yeah, so they were. They were in the process of
- 19:35getting it written like they had already begun work on this.
- 19:39And then out of nowhere, Chris Rock comes up to them and he's
- 19:43like, hey, I love Saw movies. I love what you guys do.
- 19:47I really want to be one. I want to be a Saw movie.
- 19:54Yeah, I want to be. That guy I want to be a.
- 19:56Planet can I like somehow become like morph into a real with you
- 20:03guys? Can I be real with you all right
- 20:05now? Oh my God, Travis.
- 20:08I'm sorry. OK, Back on course.
- 20:11So, yeah, he's like, all right, I really want to be in a Saw
- 20:13movie. Can we make this happen?
- 20:15Only thing is I've got a very specific window of time where
- 20:19I've got like, we got to do this if we're going to do it.
- 20:22So they're like, OK, fuck, we got to do Chris Rock.
- 20:25I mean, Chris Rock wants to work with you.
- 20:28You say yes. So that's what they did.
- 20:30They're like, OK, we're going to table this and we're just going
- 20:32to like, we know that we're going to maybe release this
- 20:35someday down the line. So they also kind of worked on
- 20:37it throughout the process of working on Spiral.
- 20:39So yeah, that's how that came to be.
- 20:41That's why it's 10. Kevin Groiter was super relieved
- 20:45that this movie had no cop stuff in the script.
- 20:48He's apparently he's been very vocal about it with everybody
- 20:52for a long time. He's like, yeah, the cop stuff,
- 20:54like I'm kind of getting tired of.
- 20:55It's really bogging us down. Now that we don't have to deal
- 20:58with cops, we can really kind of explore things and have a little
- 21:00bit more fun with the series, I guess.
- 21:02He's not a big Kosis fan. Listen, I have a lot of thoughts
- 21:06about that 22nd clip of Ghostess.
- 21:10I know me too. Tobin Bell, he had a lot of
- 21:13input in the writing of his character in this movie, so.
- 21:17Here's The thing is that I can tell and it feels like honestly
- 21:21the most passionate we've seen him in this franchise since
- 21:24maybe like Part 3. He was super into it.
- 21:28He actually, they were kind of referring to this as this swan
- 21:31song basically of like, they're not saying dude, this dude is
- 21:36going to be a part of it as long as he can.
- 21:39But I think we can all like have to come to terms with reality
- 21:42too. The dude's pretty old.
- 21:44Now. Nope.
- 21:44You sound like my mom reminded me how old Danny DeVito is.
- 21:48I refuse to acknowledge these. Things So yeah, he was like
- 21:51really into it. He they gave him, they cleared
- 21:53it with him first before they even like worked on this thing.
- 21:57They're like, OK, we got to make sure that he's on board.
- 21:59I love it when a franchise has respect for an actor who is so
- 22:04important to the DNA of it, and I love it when they have that
- 22:07kind of like respect and collaboration.
- 22:10Well, he was like, he was speaking so glowingly about
- 22:14Stolberg and Goldfinger. He's like, they, they brought me
- 22:17the script. It was fantastic.
- 22:19It was like probably my favorite Saw movie of all time.
- 22:23Like he like was really, really on board with it.
- 22:25Like, basically, they would have shit written out, but then he
- 22:29would come in, he'd be like, all right, well, they all understood
- 22:32that he knows the character better than anybody at this
- 22:35point. Yeah.
- 22:36So they're like, OK, like, he wrote his own dialogue.
- 22:39He did all of his shit. And there they said, like, we'll
- 22:42start talking about ideas about a movie or about a scene and
- 22:45we'll start like ripping on different stuff and like, oh,
- 22:47that's actually a really good thing to explore.
- 22:49That's what they did with like the whole fishing thing and I.
- 22:51Also think that's really smart too.
- 22:53When an actor has played a character for so long, they have
- 22:57done a ton of work to get into that headspace.
- 23:01A lot of times they have imagined their own back, like
- 23:05additional pieces of back story that haven't officially been
- 23:07written it. At this stage in a franchise, it
- 23:11absolutely makes sense to work on it like this.
- 23:14He's been John Kramer for two decades at the time.
- 23:16Like, you know, he knows him really well.
- 23:18So like another interesting thing about this, Amanda wasn't
- 23:21originally going to be in it. The only reason that we get
- 23:25Amanda is because they needed to explain how John is able to pull
- 23:29all of this together by himself. So whenever they had like the
- 23:33roped person collecting everybody, they're like, well,
- 23:37let's just make that Amanda. So then they did that, and then
- 23:40they just really were able to bring her into the fold and like
- 23:43as a main character in the movie too.
- 23:45Which I think is great because their relationship has always
- 23:47been an important part of the franchise, at least the early
- 23:50half of the franchise. So having this where this falls
- 23:54chronologically, it makes sense to have her there.
- 23:57But also I think it's a really good exploration of their
- 24:00relationship. Yeah, they were talking about
- 24:03it. It was because it's interesting,
- 24:06Shawnee was actually kind of talking about like her
- 24:08experience with the character too.
- 24:10And I guess like Kevin, like, came up to her.
- 24:12And it's like, you know what, Like in Saw three, she had a
- 24:16really sarcastic attitude towards John.
- 24:19And that's when they both kind of thought that maybe she was
- 24:22kind of catching on to him that because it was her third test at
- 24:25that point. She's been tested three times
- 24:28already and she's kind of getting sick of it.
- 24:30And like this right here, they were trying to strike a balance
- 24:33like, well, she's not necessarily at that point yet.
- 24:37She's like she looks at him as like a father type figure type
- 24:40deal. And they kind of wanted to still
- 24:42do that but also have her question some of his stuff a
- 24:45little bit here too. OK.
- 24:47So they originally considered the location for Eastern Europe.
- 24:53That's where they were going to go.
- 24:54They really wanted to get out of Canada.
- 24:57They're like, we've been filming all of these.
- 25:00They're like they said, we filmed every single one of these
- 25:02in Toronto for the longest time. We like, we need to explore a
- 25:06different area. I don't know.
- 25:13Why? We need to get out of Canada.
- 25:18Something about that just. Yeah, it's I, I like it.
- 25:22Yeah, like we've been seeing fucking Toronto.
- 25:24The entire I, I like having a change of location, just it's
- 25:30funny that it was like them being like, we're so sick.
- 25:33Yeah, you know. Maybe Kevin Grater felt like he
- 25:37couldn't go through customs again with.
- 25:40Oh yeah, I don't. Want to?
- 25:41See those guys? So they, it was going to be set
- 25:45in Prague for a minute. They're going to shoot it in
- 25:47Bulgaria, but then they found an amazing location in Mexico, the
- 25:50city, and they're like, you know what?
- 25:51This is actually really cool. Like let's do that.
- 25:53They have a lot of really cool, interesting culture and history
- 25:57to explore. They even have influence on the
- 26:00traps even. Plus, I'm just gonna say it
- 26:04keeps it from being a super white movie.
- 26:06That's true, yeah. Which I think saw has always
- 26:09like had an element of that diversity.
- 26:13So I appreciate that they continued it.
- 26:15Yeah, they almost put it in Norway too, since Peterson is
- 26:19Norwegian. So yeah, it would also make
- 26:21sense to have her. I love the idea of her jumping
- 26:24around because she's, like, scamming people, but she's
- 26:27saying it's because the surgeries are illegal, which I
- 26:30mean, yeah. But yeah, I like that, that it
- 26:33added that element to the right because it makes the scam seem
- 26:37more believable. You know, if they're jumping
- 26:39around from place to place, it's gonna be harder for them to be
- 26:41figured out. Because a big thing here lately
- 26:45is going to Mexico for cheap surgery, because like, that's
- 26:49the thing that people do. It's really expensive up here in
- 26:52the United States. You go down to Mexico City, you
- 26:54can get it done pretty cheaply. I thought that that's the
- 26:57approach that they were doing with this, but no, they went in.
- 26:59Like a whole other direction, it is still cost prohibitive.
- 27:05You have to be a civil engineer with a massive fortune to be
- 27:09able to afford this fake surgery.
- 27:12So during the making of this, they really wanted to capture
- 27:15the film of the earlier movies. So all those movies were shot on
- 27:20film before and they really didn't want to do that again
- 27:23because shooting on film is super inconsistent in today's
- 27:27world. So they just did everything in
- 27:31their power to make it feel like that.
- 27:34So they emulated like camera tricks that were big at that
- 27:37time that they would use. They tried to emulate the
- 27:39lighting that they used. They put in the exact same
- 27:42aspect ratio of those past movies.
- 27:44And like the cinematographer was also like saying he was really
- 27:48influenced by genre filming techniques.
- 27:51It did feel grittier in a way that the last like visually in a
- 27:56way that the last few haven't. Yeah, I I really appreciate it.
- 28:00I I like the look at this movie a lot.
- 28:02Yeah. And it and it does kind of take
- 28:04you back in that time to when it would have been set like in
- 28:07terms of chronology. Yeah, they wanted all the traps
- 28:10to be stuff that you could like be made from, stuff that you
- 28:14could pick up at a Home Depot. Now, a lot of this stuff is very
- 28:18complex, so I don't necessarily feel like that translated so
- 28:22much. Chromatome and a radiation
- 28:25machine are things you can pick up at a Home Depot.
- 28:27I think you can maybe pick up the components of that.
- 28:30I don't really think you can pick up that machine
- 28:32specifically, but I think John Cramer can get the tools he
- 28:35needs to make that stuff. Like, I'm at the point of
- 28:37suspending disbelief for what he can do in terms of his
- 28:41engineering brain. I just, I just read with it.
- 28:44But don't say that you can get this shit at a Home Depot.
- 28:47Yeah, thanks. Home Depot.
- 28:50And like a cool thing is, they did a lot of shots in
- 28:54preparation of the MPAA telling them to cut it down, tone it
- 28:58down in case that they were going to get an NC 17.
- 29:01But everything they shot was permitted, so they didn't have
- 29:05to worry about that at all with this movie.
- 29:07So we get the glorious. Version.
- 29:08I love that. And I love that when film makers
- 29:12are prepared for the MPAA to be Dicks, so they shoot like over
- 29:16the top. And then the MPAA that day was
- 29:18like, whatever. Well, Kevin Greuter said, Like,
- 29:20he approached me as like, I've been an editor, I've been a
- 29:24director. I know exactly what it or what's
- 29:27needed to be able to get what you need.
- 29:29And he's like, like, a lot of times I can't really get
- 29:31everything, but I can get enough.
- 29:33So you got to like, plan ahead for that.
- 29:35Like, all right, well, I don't have to reshoot that now.
- 29:37I've already got the shy of the toned down version of it.
- 29:40Let's just roll that out. It saves a lot of time and
- 29:43effort. And that's pretty much it.
- 29:46I didn't finish the documentary because it was like an hour and
- 29:4847 minutes and we had shit we had to do.
- 29:50Yeah. But yeah.
- 29:53So that that's the stuff that I got for fun Facts.
- 29:55So let's talk about how we feel about this movie.
- 29:58Jesse, you kick it off. What's the good?
- 30:01I love that this is a different kind of story.
- 30:07It I mean, it's still people who have personally pissed off John
- 30:09Kramer, which is where we were getting with a lot of it.
- 30:12And but it it it's in such a different way.
- 30:16And I think this is the first film that has really made you
- 30:19empathize with Jigsaw in any kind of a real way.
- 30:24And they've actually made a villain worse than him.
- 30:27And I feel, I feel I have complicated feelings about it
- 30:30because he's a monster and I'm not condoning what he's doing.
- 30:36But this is the first time that you actually kind of get his
- 30:39anger. And especially because like, he
- 30:42gives Carlos the money at the end and he like, you know, and
- 30:46he's, you know, talking about it's not just him, it's all of
- 30:49the people that have been scammed.
- 30:51But so far, he hasn't found anybody else that's been
- 30:53scammed. It's just been him because
- 30:55everybody else he's encountered, we're part of the scam.
- 31:00And all they checked the other people, they've all died.
- 31:02There was 34 patients that she worked on before, but
- 31:05everybody's already passed away since then.
- 31:08Yeah, and I, I love that thing that he said about like, you
- 31:13know, the worst thing you can do is prey on somebody's hope.
- 31:16Again, I'm not doing anything to like exalt John Kramer, but
- 31:22that's such a very real thing because praying on somebody's
- 31:26hope that's it's malicious. I they called out, I like that
- 31:32the writers are fully aware of this about him, but they said
- 31:36that they thought that that line was funny because he says that
- 31:41they're killing with hope. That's what they're doing.
- 31:43And they're like, you're kind of doing the exact same thing.
- 31:46You're giving people this impression of like hope that you
- 31:50can make it out of this trap. And you can sometimes, but a lot
- 31:54of times you're just like killing these people outright.
- 31:57See, I see it differently because the people that go
- 31:59through with his games, it's not hope, it's desperation.
- 32:02That's true too. Yeah.
- 32:03I feel like there's a fine line there, which is where I didn't
- 32:07see him as as much of A hypocrite as he normally is.
- 32:11So. Yeah, I, I, I'm not drinking the
- 32:16Jigsaw kool-aid. I'm just saying like this is
- 32:20it's an interesting way to turn the story on its head and I
- 32:24think it breathes some life into it.
- 32:28I also love the head cannon that I now have for Kostas appearing
- 32:35at the end of the movie because I feel like they forgot about
- 32:41Henry. I feel like he was a loose end
- 32:44and Coast just heard about them filming, popped in and was like,
- 32:47you need to tie up this loose end and I know one way that you
- 32:50can do it. I like to imagine that he heard
- 32:54about it and he kind of was just like hiding behind set, like
- 32:58creaking around, like peeking through the doors.
- 33:00Like a cracked board behind a ficus plant.
- 33:03Like just peering through. He's like Spaghett and yeah, and
- 33:06Eric's skin. He's just like kind of watching
- 33:09them make the movie. He's like, alright, when are
- 33:10they going to call me? When?
- 33:12When's my scene? I'm sorry, I don't see my call
- 33:15time on this sheet. And then, like, he kind of
- 33:18George Costanzes himself in there and he just kind of like,
- 33:20shows up on set one day. He's like, oh, right.
- 33:22So this is the part where my character like, yeah, remembers
- 33:25that guy, right? You guys remember that guy,
- 33:27right? And then he heard that Tobin
- 33:29Bell wrote his own dialogue. He's like, I'm going to write my
- 33:31own dialogue. I heard the kids talk about epic
- 33:33bad luck. So there we go.
- 33:36Kosis is hip. The I liked it because it was,
- 33:40like everybody said, epic in that era.
- 33:44I know it was very accurate for that time.
- 33:46Also love it because it's that little flair of over the top
- 33:50nonsense that his era of the franchise is and it's great.
- 33:55I am as stupid as the line is, it's perfect.
- 33:59I love it I guess. All right, the cat's out of the
- 34:01bag now. I've been playing, you know,
- 34:03dumb right throughout this whole coverage about how, you know,
- 34:07maybe we'll get closest, maybe we won't.
- 34:08We do we get a. Little Yeah, Travis really tried
- 34:11to like, let the people that haven't seen this movie catch
- 34:13up. Well, I mean, you know, like
- 34:16it's still a fairly recent release.
- 34:18Now you're listening to the episode, now we can talk all
- 34:20about it. Yeah, he's, he's in here for a
- 34:23fucking minute. Not even.
- 34:25Yeah, but, you know, like I I appreciate his presence here
- 34:31because, you know, he was missed.
- 34:33I I missed that man. Yeah.
- 34:35All right. You got any more goods?
- 34:37That was I think that was the the main ones.
- 34:41OK. Yeah.
- 34:42I mean, I agree with pretty much everything that you said.
- 34:45I like the setup. A lot of this I will.
- 34:48I mean, it feels nice to have because like a lot of the time
- 34:52you don't necessarily feel like the people that are in the traps
- 34:57really deserve it. I mean, sometimes they do,
- 34:59sometimes they are assholes, but this time they give you a group
- 35:02of people like they are deliberately making you hate.
- 35:05Them. Yes, they have made a series of
- 35:07conscious choices. They're not making them
- 35:10sympathetic. No.
- 35:12Which, you know, is an interesting thing that really
- 35:16hasn't been explored in the song movie until now.
- 35:19And also, it's never been done that John and Amanda are the
- 35:23protagonists. Especially John.
- 35:26They were talking like this is the most screen time that he's
- 35:29had in his own movies. Like he's got at least three
- 35:34previous movies worth of screen time in this one movie.
- 35:36Like it's all about him and it's kind of cool.
- 35:40Like we get like a whole character study of this guy that
- 35:43is really complex and he's there's a lot to explore there.
- 35:49I think the effects and the traps that were in this movie.
- 35:52Oh my God, such gnarly. I like that they kind of have a
- 35:57little, a lot of them have like a call back to other traps and
- 36:01other moments in the franchise, but they're they're completely
- 36:04own spin on them. Yeah, like the craniotomy thing.
- 36:09I that's my favorite. That was the first one that they
- 36:12came up with too. And then also Gabriella.
- 36:16The radiation. Her having to smash her foot to
- 36:20get out of the shackle. That's what I was thinking about
- 36:22that too. Yeah, that's what Don Wahlberg
- 36:24does. Yeah.
- 36:27Yeah, Don. Donnie Wahlberg.
- 36:30Donnie what? The fuck?
- 36:31Is this an actual name in the movie?
- 36:33I can't remember Matthews. Yeah, yeah.
- 36:37OK. So yeah, I mean, there's like a
- 36:39lot of that stuff there. They did a lot of good with this
- 36:42movie. I'm really happy with it.
- 36:44So what are some bad things? Amanda's wig.
- 36:47Yeah, Amanda's. That was like what the fuck?
- 36:51I get that. Like OK, at this point in the
- 36:53franchise she would have had the short hair because shortly after
- 36:55is when they do the house trap and she had short hair.
- 36:58Then I get that and I get her not wanting to cut her actual
- 37:02hair for it. I'm on board with that.
- 37:03What the fuck is it? It's not like it's distractingly
- 37:08bad in a way that like I every time she's on to I'm like they
- 37:13didn't even attempt to style the wig.
- 37:16They did nothing with it. It's just it looks bad and.
- 37:19That's one of my things with this movie too, is like you're
- 37:22taking these people there 20 years older and trying to put
- 37:24them back in that time and you're not putting a whole lot
- 37:27of effort in de aging them at. All yeah and like.
- 37:29Don't do the fucking AI shit that they do with the Marvel
- 37:32movies. I don't like that, but like,
- 37:34makeup or something. Yeah, I don't know, Like they
- 37:37look their real age. Yeah, and that's not because a
- 37:41lot of people were shitting on Shawnee Smith.
- 37:43She looks fantastic for her age. No, she does.
- 37:46But she does also just like she looks her age.
- 37:48And that's we need to have a talk about people not
- 37:52understanding that human being's age because it's a thing.
- 37:55She's guarantee she looks better than a lot of the people that
- 37:59are talking shit. No, it's totally fine.
- 38:01I all I mean I like that they can do this because.
- 38:04Yes. You you have to come with like a
- 38:06suspension. Yeah, like, absolutely.
- 38:09What, you know, like these are characters.
- 38:10They're not like you just got to like roll with it, but at the
- 38:14same time. Bell even looks older than he
- 38:16did and he was already like. But he sounds old too, like a
- 38:19like his voice is like this. Yeah, and like kind.
- 38:22Of sounds like a strong whenever you like.
- 38:24This is a tracheotomy. And I feel like at least with
- 38:26him, they can kind of like, ride it off like, oh, he's in the
- 38:28throes of his, like, final stages with cancer.
- 38:32But. We go to saw three.
- 38:34Yeah, he's like a totally. Is noticeably 20 years younger.
- 38:37Yeah, yeah, no. And it's one of those things
- 38:42that like, if you don't watch the movies back-to-back, like
- 38:46maybe you can ride it off, but you can't ride off that fucking
- 38:48wig, dude. You just can't.
- 38:50I mean, like, I'm totally OK with them doing it, but I'm just
- 38:54like, it's you got to critique it in some way.
- 38:56Like it does take you out of it a little bit when you like step
- 38:59back. Like damn, like it's really been
- 39:0220 years. Also, I don't like some of the
- 39:05dialogue they wrote for Cecilia. I feel like some of it just
- 39:09comes across forced, like jig fucking saw.
- 39:12Yeah, like it sounds like because she is evil, she is
- 39:19evil. We don't have to try so hard
- 39:21with her dialogue. Yeah, they they did that with
- 39:25Sears because they were originally going to have Sears
- 39:29be more like villainous and be more into the idea of like
- 39:34killing the kid. But they're like, let's dial
- 39:38that back a little bit. Let's make him realize that
- 39:41Cecilia is a little bit more twisted than he is, and he's not
- 39:44necessarily wanting to go where she's going with it.
- 39:47But they went full out with her and yeah, her dialogue is kind
- 39:51of a little bit there. Let's Did you have a bad?
- 39:57I'm kind of just rolling with you.
- 39:58I mean, my bad was the fact that it kind of takes you out of it
- 40:01with their obvious age difference compared to when the
- 40:06timeline is supposed to be. But.
- 40:09You know, it's whatever. It's not like a big bat or
- 40:11anything like that. Yeah, ugly stuff.
- 40:14Ugly definitely. So two prong.
- 40:18One is like healthcare being so piss poor that like you have to
- 40:24seek alternative methods and it makes you susceptible to these
- 40:28types of scams. And the other is that these
- 40:30types of scams exist. I don't know necessarily that
- 40:35they exist precisely like this, but I mean it's any type of a
- 40:41scam prays off of that hope that people have like look at any MLM
- 40:47out there. They're telling like people that
- 40:49they can get rich working from home part time and it's all a
- 40:52lie to get the people at the top richer.
- 40:57You know, think about cults. It's all like a hope that like
- 41:01life will be better after this and it again, it's just a way
- 41:06for the other person to get money and power and it's gross
- 41:13and it's ugly that it exists. Yeah, that's my thing.
- 41:16Like I, I hate that they, I hate seeing shit where people get
- 41:21taken advantage of like that. It's like the same thing with
- 41:24the scam callers that prey on older people.
- 41:26Oh my God, yeah, absolutely. That shit drives me crazy.
- 41:31I've there's one dude out there, I don't know his name, but he is
- 41:35a fucking hero. He makes it.
- 41:38He has a whole channel. He all he does is he, he has
- 41:41like this device that modulates his voice to sound like an old
- 41:45woman and he takes these scam callers from India like over,
- 41:51you know, they're trying to get you to get like Google cards or
- 41:54whatever. He he's able to like he just
- 41:58fucks with them and just strings them out for like an hour and
- 42:01then he like he makes them full on meltdown.
- 42:04He'll sometimes like take control of their screen and fuck
- 42:09up their shit. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 42:11But like, that's like John Cramer and White right there.
- 42:14Well, I mean, like, we even see that.
- 42:16So if you have Medicaid or Medicare, you're still prey to
- 42:19somebody calling you and telling you, oh, hey, this is going to
- 42:21be a much better plan. I've been.
- 42:24I get those. Calls.
- 42:25It turns out it cannot be a much better plan, and you might be
- 42:28shit out of luck with your coverage because you've agreed
- 42:31to it. Because somebody that said they
- 42:33were a professional and that they knew what your needs were
- 42:35told you that it's fine. You know, I get those calls.
- 42:38I don't know why because I'm nowhere near that age, but as
- 42:42soon as they say Medicare, like I just saying to the phone, fuck
- 42:46off and I hang up. Like it's just like, I'm not
- 42:48going to like deal with that shit.
- 42:50Yeah. OK, what are absurds from this
- 42:54movie? Oh, man, the absurds.
- 42:58Here's here's mine. Is that they have this whole
- 43:02elaborate set up. Presumably they actually take
- 43:05his blood. You know, they do all of this.
- 43:09They get him set up. They do put him under.
- 43:11They hold a razor up to his head.
- 43:18They don't shave his head. What?
- 43:20If. Have a little bit more
- 43:21commitment to the bitch. I like the idea, though, that
- 43:24they didn't actually have like the everything's plugged in
- 43:27already. They had limited power supplies
- 43:29there. So they're like, all right, we
- 43:31got to just make the sound brand.
- 43:34Making it. He's already like under heavy
- 43:37medication at that point, Like, you know, he's not going to be
- 43:39questioning it. Yeah, OK, Yeah, they could have
- 43:43just shaved his head, but maybe that was where Tobin Bell drew
- 43:46the line. He's like, Jigsaw wouldn't do
- 43:48that. John would not do that.
- 43:51Totally, totally. He just didn't want to have bald
- 43:54have bald head. That's fair day.
- 43:55Yeah, that's legit. I get it.
- 43:57Matteo had to have a bald spot. They they actually did talk
- 44:02about that too. They were originally going to
- 44:07shave his head for that, but the special effects people didn't
- 44:12want to do that mostly because like they did it out of concern
- 44:16for him. Like, well, maybe he doesn't
- 44:18want to be bald. And also they're like, it could
- 44:22be weird for continuity, like doing shots like that.
- 44:26And they just wanted to be a little bit more authentic.
- 44:28So like they just they built a prosthetic head for him?
- 44:31That and honestly that's probably easier for them to work
- 44:34with too, rather than try and like make it all look flat and
- 44:38even on a partially shaped head. It worked better overall too,
- 44:41because Mateo was like the actor was actually able to use his
- 44:44hand, just stand over himself and do the surgery part.
- 44:47And so it worked out OK. My absurds.
- 44:51First one is staged kidnapping at the beginning there where
- 44:56they're bringing him to the place like why?
- 44:58He's already like on board. You don't have to like do this
- 45:00fucking thing where you're like you blind side them.
- 45:04Before, when we talked about I know what you did last summer,
- 45:08but something about seeing scared old men makes me want to
- 45:11cry. And seeing John actually,
- 45:14actually scared, I was like, oh. Yeah, yeah.
- 45:18You kind of feel bad for him there for a second.
- 45:24I next one is a wife coach John Kramer, and that is kind of what
- 45:28he's like. I'm somewhat of a life coach.
- 45:29Somewhat of a life coach. Yeah.
- 45:31You know, I thought that that was kind of.
- 45:32Funny, what is his Yelp rating? I like where Amanda says he's
- 45:38speaking metaphorically. He does that a lot.
- 45:42I thought that that was going to be your intro.
- 45:46And then the final thing is they.
- 45:48Can I say what my intro was going to be before I remembered
- 45:51about epic bad luck? Yeah.
- 45:53Let's see, where is it? I don't care what the fucking
- 45:59thing is called, Cecilia. Yeah, I like that too.
- 46:03Yeah, she, like, actually corrects them.
- 46:05Like, this is not the time. Cecilia don't do that shit right
- 46:08now. I have to cut my fucking head
- 46:10open. The final thing I have is they
- 46:12do one thing that they make fun of in Breaking Bad and in Better
- 46:17Call Saul is like the second that you get everything yellow
- 46:21tinted, you know, you're in Mexico.
- 46:24Like if you ever are watching Breaking Bad and all of a sudden
- 46:27things go yellow and you're like, OK, we're in Mexico now.
- 46:30We missed somebody called Tortuga.
- 46:32Tortuga, that is Danny Trejo, I know.
- 46:35Yeah. He could have shown up in this
- 46:37movie. God, Can you imagine Danny Trejo
- 46:39in a Saw movie? I think that would have maybe
- 46:41taken me out of it a little bit. I can handle them being a little
- 46:45bit aged up, but Danny Trejo walking up in there, I don't
- 46:49know about that. OK, so let's rate it.
- 46:53What do you rate this out of 10? Saw ten.
- 46:57Saw 10. You giving it?
- 46:59Ten. I'm giving it A10.
- 47:01I fucking love this movie, OK? I think it's amazing.
- 47:05God, I I kind of thought about maybe taking mine up there, but
- 47:10I think I might need. It's a really fucking good song
- 47:14movie. It is one of the better ones.
- 47:18Put me at 925 for now. God, you can't just leave me
- 47:22with easy math can. You.
- 47:23No, that's what you got for going on all 10. 9.625.
- 47:28That's really, really good. All right.
- 47:31Are we ready to discuss? We are ready to discuss.
- 47:34OK, so it starts off with, again, another Breaking Bad
- 47:39moment. I said.
- 47:40He's all John. He's all Walter White in the MRI
- 47:42machine. That's what it is.
- 47:44See, I I couldn't remember what it was called, so I just wrote
- 47:47down John and big scan machine and then I wrote Cat scan.
- 47:58I just don't know. So like right off the bat, this
- 48:04movie had me on my toes. I love the very real thing where
- 48:10he asked the tech if they can give any news and the tech
- 48:14can't. Like that's the thing.
- 48:16And I know people are like, but surely they they can see stuff.
- 48:20They're legally not allowed to diagnose that.
- 48:23Like they do not have the right license for that.
- 48:25They are not allowed to. They could get fired and sued so
- 48:29fast. Yeah, you don't want to like,
- 48:30give that false information for sure.
- 48:32I mean, that's kind of like the whole thing with him.
- 48:34He got false information and kind of fucked him over.
- 48:37He goes to a support group for cancer patients with terminal
- 48:43diagnosis, and they give the old platitude of today as a gift.
- 48:47That's why they call it the present.
- 48:49And for some people, sayings like that are very helpful for
- 48:52them. For me, if somebody said that
- 48:54shit to me, I'd want to punch them.
- 48:56Yeah. And.
- 48:56This is like a terrible time for me right now.
- 48:58This is not a present. Henry Kessler is another member
- 49:03of this group. He's got stage 4 pancreatic
- 49:05cancer, and he's said he's planning to fight this shit to
- 49:08the end. Yeah.
- 49:09He also said terminal so like, shit's not.
- 49:11Working good? Well, Stage 4 generally is not
- 49:14what you want to hear. Well, he specified.
- 49:16I, I don't know, maybe I thought that that was something worth.
- 49:18Stage 4 usually means that it's medic, medicised, medicised,
- 49:24medicised. That's one of those words I
- 49:26can't say I it means it's spread I.
- 49:28Got you. I got you.
- 49:31OK, so now John is meeting with his doctor and he asked how much
- 49:35time he has left and he says a year or less.
- 49:37You got months. Yeah.
- 49:39And he's like, I've got work to finish.
- 49:42Then as he's walking out, he stops for some water and he sees
- 49:45a custodian in the room of somebody who is asleep.
- 49:50Not sure if it's medically induced or if they're just
- 49:52sleepy and he opens the drawer and is looking to take like
- 49:57their wallet and jewelry and John brain.
- 50:00Blasts. I like that he like we get to
- 50:03see. He just daydreams about this
- 50:05stuff. Like he's like, man, I could do
- 50:08this whole thing where like I suck his eyes out and I make him
- 50:11like I tear his fingers up because he's about to take that.
- 50:14Shit breaking them sticky thingies.
- 50:17Yeah, so this is like one of the coolest traps in the movie.
- 50:20It's all over the poster. This is what everybody was
- 50:23expecting. And I like that we still see it
- 50:26even though it's not real. I do too, but I also.
- 50:30Feels cheap to do something like that, but I think this time
- 50:33because we are getting such a character study of John Cramer
- 50:35that it's. I I appreciate it, but at the
- 50:38same time I was a little bit bummed that it wasn't real.
- 50:41Like a warning. Like I thought that we just like
- 50:43quick cut to him. He's like, all right, you're
- 50:44fucking done. But no, like he's just like he
- 50:48fantasizes about the whole thing, like the eyes getting
- 50:50sucked out. His fingers are like torn up.
- 50:52Here's the thing. Because then the custodian sees
- 50:55John and it's like, oh, I shouldn't be doing this.
- 51:00Closes the drawer and John congratulates him.
- 51:02Honest choice. Which to me says that maybe you
- 51:05don't have to break people's fingers or rip out their
- 51:08eyeballs to maybe convince them that they were doing something
- 51:11wrong. Just a thought.
- 51:12Just a thought. Stare at them.
- 51:15You know, that actually seems like less work than doing all
- 51:18this like shit with the traps. Seems like you'd save a lot of
- 51:22time and effort. And money.
- 51:25OK, so now he's out at the cafe and he's working on his will.
- 51:30And then he manages to run into Henry, who's also there, just
- 51:33getting a coffee. He just kind of is in a good
- 51:36mood and he's. Like, all right, we find out
- 51:38this is four months later and Henry's in remission.
- 51:41He talks about Doctor Finn Peterson who has like this
- 51:44special method where it's like a drug cocktail plus a surgery and
- 51:49then he shows this real gnarly scar in his tum tum.
- 51:52It's an experimental treatment. It's not been cleared by the FDA
- 51:55or anybody for that matter. Yeah.
- 51:58So you have to leave the country to do it.
- 52:00And he gives him a link. It's the petersonproject.net.
- 52:03I think that they actually had this as an active website during
- 52:06promotion of the film. Oh, that would have been cool.
- 52:09I I don't remember any more details beyond that, but I feel
- 52:12like I remember reading that it was.
- 52:13I think you could go to. Really like the attention to
- 52:16detail that they gave it the old browser.
- 52:20Yeah, like, I mean, it's from that era.
- 52:22Like, I they did a good job, like attention to detail right
- 52:25here. That website even looks old
- 52:27school too. Like he goes to the website and
- 52:29it's just like blue background with her face like right in the
- 52:33middle of it. So he does a little bit of
- 52:36research on this and he sees Finn on a like talk show
- 52:42explaining what's going on. The page shows his daughter
- 52:44talking about the what they're targeting and what their
- 52:48treatment methods are. He sends an e-mail and then he
- 52:53gets a call from Cecilia in the. Middle of the night.
- 52:56Yeah, she has a spot in three months and he's just kind of
- 53:01quiet and she goes. You don't have that long, do
- 53:02you? She's like, well, I can add, I
- 53:05can add an opening to our trial in Mexico.
- 53:08It's in one week. And you be here.
- 53:10It's like, absolutely I can. And then we get, like, the least
- 53:14joyful flight down to Mexico I think I've ever seen in a movie
- 53:16because usually it's like, hey, we're going to Mexico.
- 53:21Yeah. Exactly like fun times here.
- 53:24Though I know I'm not critiquing it for it, I'm just saying.
- 53:27Yeah, well, you, you do get Diego, who is there to pick him
- 53:30up, who is very bright, like attitude.
- 53:33And he's like, hey, man, that's cool.
- 53:35Let me show you about the city. Yeah, this was a.
- 53:37Little mini tour. I, I, you know, he didn't have
- 53:40to do that, but he did. I and you know what, I kind of
- 53:43like it because if this was legit, it would be a very kind
- 53:46way to pick up a patient. Yeah, for sure.
- 53:49They stop at one point and then this is where the fake
- 53:52kidnapping happens. Not so much fun, is it John?
- 53:58Yeah, like the tables get turned and they was like, that's what
- 54:02that feels like. Shit needs more pig masks.
- 54:05Yeah, not enough of a flare to it.
- 54:09Yeah. So they eventually, like, are
- 54:15like, OK, you're sick. Cool, we got it.
- 54:18So they arrive at the compounds. Gabrielle lets them in and then
- 54:23introduces him to his family and shows him to his room.
- 54:28After he gets settled in. John and Cecilia meet and she
- 54:33says that the security was beefed up because they've gotten
- 54:37into trouble at their past location, so they wanted to make
- 54:39sure everybody was safe, hence the fake kidnapping.
- 54:43You also probably have to be a little bit more careful down in
- 54:45Mexico with the cartel running around.
- 54:47Yeah, yeah. Oh my God Can you imagine the
- 54:49cartel like interrupting a surgery once again if this was
- 54:52legit? So from all that I've read of
- 54:55the cartel, they have their fingers like in every fucking
- 54:59pot. Can you imagine John putting a
- 55:02member of the cartel in one of its traps?
- 55:05Now we're just going back to Breaking Bad.
- 55:07Yeah. OK.
- 55:10So he is getting like a little preview of where the surgery's
- 55:13going to be. He meets another person there
- 55:16that's getting treatment. It is Mr. Sears and.
- 55:19I guess the good news about doing an illegal surgery is that
- 55:23you also don't have to give a shit about HIPAA.
- 55:25Yeah, that's true. Yeah.
- 55:26Here's his entire medical history.
- 55:28They like have like a whole comparison, like they it's kind
- 55:31of like a like a Dick measuring contest.
- 55:33Yeah, well, where you at? And then he's like, oh, this is
- 55:35mine. He's like, oh, you win.
- 55:39So yeah, they he gets the whole thing there.
- 55:42They're like, all right, you're going.
- 55:43To be up to the surgery's in an old chemical factory.
- 55:46Mateo is the anesthesiologist then Valentina's a nurse.
- 55:51Valentina does a scan to do some like pre op testing.
- 55:56Cecilia and John talk about his work and his hobbies.
- 56:00He's a civil engineer and architect.
- 56:04Also, he is something like a life coach.
- 56:08Yeah. Gabriella brings tequila, which
- 56:11I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to have before surgery,
- 56:13but it's fine. She says it's good luck.
- 56:15So they they drink a little tequila together that night.
- 56:20He's a little nervous, of course.
- 56:22So he's wandering around and he sees a little boy named Carlos
- 56:25working on his bike. And he decides that he's going
- 56:28to help him. And he learns because Carlos
- 56:30doesn't speak English, so he's like learning some Spanish.
- 56:33And the word for cool is halar. Halar.
- 56:37Yeah. So.
- 56:37And then they kind of bond over this.
- 56:39He helps him. He's like, I'm somewhat of an
- 56:41engineer. Yeah.
- 56:42He's like, I know how to do this shit.
- 56:43You should see all the other shit that I make.
- 56:46Maybe. Is he grooming this kid to be
- 56:48another one of these days? We might see this kid.
- 56:52Become another. You literally thought about that
- 56:54at the end of the movie last night.
- 56:55And I was like, I feel like they have potential with this kid.
- 56:59They do because this is a formative moment.
- 57:01Yeah, like, hey, like, this is how you make this shit.
- 57:04Do you want to learn how to maybe make a death trap too?
- 57:07Like, I don't know, maybe, maybe eventually.
- 57:10So John is floating in and out of consciousness during his
- 57:13surgery. It seems like a little clips of
- 57:16them cutting into his brain. Yeah, and at one point they,
- 57:21like, make a point of turning the TV around, like, oh, you
- 57:23weren't supposed to see that. And then he wakes up in a bed in
- 57:27a completely different location. Apparently it's two blocks from
- 57:30Matteo's hospital. Just in case something happened.
- 57:34He's got 7 days of meds that he has to drink.
- 57:36That's it. He's drinking liquid medication
- 57:40for seven days. His bandage is magically
- 57:43antibacterial and won't need to be changed, can just be taken
- 57:46off in seven days. And it's all good.
- 57:47And he's not questioning any of this.
- 57:49Like, look, I get it, you think it's a very experimental
- 57:53surgery, but that's also not how some of this stuff works.
- 57:55You're also kind of desperate at this point, so you can just kind
- 57:58of go on with whatever, you know?
- 58:00So John is sketching. He's just a rack.
- 58:05He's like planning future torture devices.
- 58:07Yeah, yeah, it's the one from. Timothy Young.
- 58:10From three. Yeah, so I was motherfucking
- 58:13Jeff. Yeah.
- 58:15So yeah, he's doing that. And then he's also just kind of
- 58:17curious. He's wanting to go back over
- 58:19there and thank them. Yeah, he buys tequila in a gift
- 58:21card and he's going to bring it to Gabriella.
- 58:24And he finds the tower that he saw from before, and he uses his
- 58:27fucking John Kramer mind tricks and he figures out exactly where
- 58:31the location was. Yeah.
- 58:32He's like, oh, the angle of the tower from here versus what I
- 58:35saw in the room with the house, like, And he figures out where
- 58:37it is. And so when he gets there, he
- 58:41sees everything is, like, empty and deserted.
- 58:44And he realized it's a scam. And he rips off.
- 58:51He rips off his bandage. And I wrote in my nose.
- 58:54Damn, they didn't even actually shave his hair.
- 58:56They and the footage that he saw of the brain surgery was from
- 59:01AVHS tape titled Surgeons of Tomorrow.
- 59:05Don't they need that for their next scam?
- 59:07That's what I thought too. Like, why leave that?
- 59:10Yeah, exactly. I feel like that is very well,
- 59:13OK. No, I think.
- 59:14Maybe they needed like. And it's not all brain related.
- 59:17That's true. So I think that they may have
- 59:19picked that tape up for this one specifically.
- 59:22And maybe they were just in a rush.
- 59:24They did have to rush this thing because she wasn't necessarily
- 59:26planning for yeah, one in Mexico so soon.
- 59:29Yeah, she wasn't, but she didn't want to turn down the
- 59:31opportunity for an additional $50,000.
- 59:34Yeah. So yeah, he's pissed.
- 59:36Royally pissed. Rightfully so.
- 59:38Diego is still he still works as a taxi driver, so that was at
- 59:43least true. He drops a ride off and then he
- 59:46gets Pig nabbed and he wakes up in the factory and there are
- 59:52these bombs. Bombs.
- 59:55Yeah, they are like straight up. This right here.
- 59:58I could see being made from Home Depot.
- 1:00:00Yeah. So they're like.
- 1:00:03He's got these like wires that are just in his arm and he has
- 1:00:07to. It's like it's almost.
- 1:00:10Like a rebar? Yeah, in a way.
- 1:00:12So he's got like. And he's got to cut them out.
- 1:00:15Yeah, he's got like blades attached to the ends of it, so
- 1:00:17he's got to cut them out with that, and he's got 3 minutes to
- 1:00:20do so. And he doesn't.
- 1:00:22He starts giving John some information because he doesn't
- 1:00:25want to be further tortured. I said we don't.
- 1:00:29Know that yet they haven't revealed the part that where he
- 1:00:31gets interrogated. Oh, oh, he was Doctor Cortez.
- 1:00:35So he was more than just the taxi driver.
- 1:00:37He. Can't.
- 1:00:37He's an. Actress here.
- 1:00:38OK, yeah, he gets them free and then John says that he needs his
- 1:00:42help. So that's what that's what we
- 1:00:45see. Yeah.
- 1:00:46So Valentina is at a club, and she invites the John out to the
- 1:00:50car. And he's like, why would I pay
- 1:00:52you? And so that's the whole thing.
- 1:00:54And then she gets saved by a pig.
- 1:00:56And then she also gets pignapped.
- 1:00:58Yeah, she gets pignapped. So it's kind of a whiplash
- 1:01:01moment for her cuz she's like, I'm being saved.
- 1:01:03No SO. So we cut over to a vet, like a
- 1:01:08veterinary veterinary clinic? Veterinary veterinary clinics.
- 1:01:12Thank you. God, we can't fucking talk
- 1:01:13today. That's fine.
- 1:01:15It's Mateo. Is he a janitor I think or is he
- 1:01:19an actual vet there? He might be like a vet tech.
- 1:01:21He's got the. He's got access to the meds.
- 1:01:25Yeah, he's OK. So yeah, he's a Med tech.
- 1:01:27They do a lot of, We've seen it at the vet's office.
- 1:01:30They have to do a lot of cleaning, so it's reasonable to
- 1:01:33see him with a mop. So he's got to close up.
- 1:01:36Gabriella comes in for some meds and he's like, I'm not doing
- 1:01:39this anymore. And then she leaves and he gets
- 1:01:41gotten and then. Hears a sound and then he's a
- 1:01:44pig. Pig nap.
- 1:01:45And Gabriella goes to the club and she goes in the bathroom to
- 1:01:48do her drugs, and while she's in there, I guess what happens.
- 1:01:53I'll pig nap. She is pig nap.
- 1:01:56So Cecilia is on the phone, She has another person she's
- 1:02:01scamming and then she's got her whole little scam board.
- 1:02:05Like she's very organized. I will give her that.
- 1:02:08Is she back in Norway? I don't know because she's in a
- 1:02:12nice ass house and there's no way that this is a house that
- 1:02:14she bought just for like a short time in Mexico.
- 1:02:16It could be like a rental. It could be, I guess, but she
- 1:02:20she seems to know the way out. But how are they going to drive
- 1:02:24her? Like drug her and bring her from
- 1:02:27Norway to Mexico. I don't know.
- 1:02:29I don't really know how much this was thought out.
- 1:02:31I think it's an Airbnb from like one of the cartel overlords.
- 1:02:34Well, Airbnb wasn't a thing back then.
- 1:02:37Yeah, I don't know what it would actually call.
- 1:02:38I don't think it would be called Airbnb either if it was a cartel
- 1:02:41just. Could be a BNBI, don't know.
- 1:02:42Yeah. Whatever anyway.
- 1:02:44Not important. There's a pig on top of the
- 1:02:45roof. That is what.
- 1:02:46Yeah, that's what we need to be focusing on.
- 1:02:48Yeah, and it smashes through the.
- 1:02:51I love this because she's like watching the security camera, so
- 1:02:54she kind of has an idea of where they are.
- 1:02:56But still we have like this spooky moment of the roof
- 1:03:00smashing through. She runs out to her car, manages
- 1:03:02to get in there, and when she rolls up the garage door.
- 1:03:06There's one standing there, and then there's also one in the car
- 1:03:08and then back seat. Yeah, that one is John Kramer.
- 1:03:11Yeah, and then we get a rare like mid movie flashback to
- 1:03:16Amanda helping him with all of. The pappings, they were like,
- 1:03:19oh, is Amanda doing all this shit the entire time?
- 1:03:21Which, yeah, that makes sense. Like, I don't think John was out
- 1:03:24there fucking fighting people. You know what I mean?
- 1:03:28So Amanda enters the factory where everybody is set up.
- 1:03:32She takes their coats, puts them on a little cart just out of
- 1:03:35reach. They all have the oh, I can read
- 1:03:40my handwriting for a second, I said.
- 1:03:42They all have the audacity to act surprised that John is mad.
- 1:03:46Yeah, yeah. They're like Kramer.
- 1:03:48What's up, Kramer? Hey, how you doing buddy?
- 1:03:51Kramer. You're going to go in through
- 1:03:54the door all weird, but he's like, no, not today.
- 1:03:58He like they all call him now and they're like, you guys
- 1:04:01fucked up. You guys are pieces of shit.
- 1:04:04You're praying on people with hope.
- 1:04:07And it's a Valentina's turn. First we all get to learn about
- 1:04:12they each get individual games and it kind of ties to like what
- 1:04:16their fake role was in the scam. So because Valentina drew blood
- 1:04:21into testing, she has to cut off her own leg with a Julie saw and
- 1:04:27then suck out some bone marrow and she's gotta like weight down
- 1:04:32a thing. Or else this wire will cut her
- 1:04:35head off. Yep.
- 1:04:37Yeah. And he says that you'll find a
- 1:04:40key in the box next to you. And the key is that we saw.
- 1:04:43And she goes, what? I don't see a key at Amanda.
- 1:04:45That's when she says it's a metaphor.
- 1:04:47He does this a lot. Yeah.
- 1:04:50I like that. So Cecilia has scammed 34 people
- 1:04:55in eight years. And John says this is not
- 1:04:59retribution. This is a reawakening to let
- 1:05:02them all reconsider their life choices.
- 1:05:04Yeah. So Valentina's game starts, and
- 1:05:07Cecilia encourages, like, kind of like a rabid sports fan or
- 1:05:11like a stage mom in a way. Like, she's like, come on, Come
- 1:05:14on, Valentino, you got to do do this.
- 1:05:16Do this for mommy, sweetheart, look at me.
- 1:05:19Look at me. Look at me.
- 1:05:20Look at me. It was.
- 1:05:21Cool. They interviewed her actor and
- 1:05:24she's like, well, I, I tried to find like a good balance of how
- 1:05:27to do this because I know that Cecilia is a psychopath, so she
- 1:05:32doesn't really care about anybody other than herself here.
- 1:05:35And I there's something about her, like rabid encouragement
- 1:05:42during all of their games, that feels off.
- 1:05:46Yeah, she's like, yeah, mutilate yourself.
- 1:05:47Go ahead, please. Yeah.
- 1:05:48And it, it's in a way that, like, it feels off the first
- 1:05:51time you're watching it before, you know, she has Parker on the
- 1:05:54way and you're just like, why is she, like, acting?
- 1:05:58Just like, does she think maybe she won't have to do it if she
- 1:06:01looks like she's a guy? Like there's something that
- 1:06:02feels a little off and it makes sense after the big review.
- 1:06:05A little bit, but also at the same time, like you kind of do
- 1:06:08need that voice to tell you, hey, you need to do this or you
- 1:06:11will actually die. Which I mean, here's the thing.
- 1:06:14Everybody in this movie, the ones that survive are the ones
- 1:06:18that get right to it. Everybody that dies, they wait a
- 1:06:20good 30 seconds to a minute before they get started, and
- 1:06:23they're always just a second too late.
- 1:06:25Like they need that extra encouragement.
- 1:06:27Actually, Gabriella did survive her game, and she was refusing
- 1:06:30to even play the tape. Oh no, yeah, but whenever they
- 1:06:34told her to smash her stuff, she did it right away.
- 1:06:37Everybody else is just arguing like, no, I'm not going to
- 1:06:39fucking do that. But that's, and the way that
- 1:06:42they did this man, they, they got the footage of her actually
- 1:06:46doing this with her leg. So they had like a little
- 1:06:50plastic tube and they actually had a wire underneath her.
- 1:06:53So like just to protect her leg, she would actually have to do
- 1:06:55that. And then eventually they like
- 1:06:58had a thing rigged where she would stick her leg down in
- 1:07:00there and they would cut it off. But God damn it's brutal.
- 1:07:04The girl sells it really well too.
- 1:07:06And she does cut off her leg and she does suck out the bone
- 1:07:09marrow, but she doesn't get quiet enough.
- 1:07:11She is less than 10 milliliters off when her head gets cut off.
- 1:07:15And it's kind of sad. John tells Amanda that
- 1:07:19Gabriella's next. Amanda is like, listen, I don't
- 1:07:23feel like she needs to have this extreme of a game.
- 1:07:26You don't understand what drug addiction is like.
- 1:07:28I do. Hey, remember that was one of my
- 1:07:30games was about drug addiction. And she decides that she's going
- 1:07:35to kind of override him, but he's like, I don't know how you
- 1:07:38can handle our work. And she's like, we're doing
- 1:07:41Meteo next. While all of that's going on
- 1:07:44though, they're all out there. They Cecilia grabs Valentin and
- 1:07:48his body and the phone is ringing there so they use her
- 1:07:54intestines to over closer to her so she can get the phone.
- 1:07:58And again, Cecilia is just so fucking cold.
- 1:08:02Yeah, like she and everybody is like, horrified.
- 1:08:04And I get it, like you need to be pragmatic in a situation to
- 1:08:07survive, but like she doesn't even try to pretend like she's
- 1:08:10bothered by it. No.
- 1:08:11So she makes a call and we assume that this is going to be
- 1:08:14serious. This is why he arrives in a
- 1:08:16little bit. Yeah, Amanda arrives, does a
- 1:08:19little shocky shock, and she doesn't care about their bag
- 1:08:23gang. She's like, this is what it is.
- 1:08:26And she tells John, we have a visitor.
- 1:08:29It's Parker. He's coming back for his money.
- 1:08:32He's furious that Cecilia has scammed him as well.
- 1:08:36Says that the scar that they put on his neck is fake.
- 1:08:40How did he not notice? Was he not in pain?
- 1:08:42I'm so confused. He says that the cracks.
- 1:08:46So John is like, all right, here's what we're going to do.
- 1:08:50You're kind of blue skinning, and I don't trust you.
- 1:08:52So we're gonna chain you up for just a minute.
- 1:08:54Just for a minute. We're gonna take your gun and
- 1:08:56we're gonna put it over here in the locker because we don't use
- 1:08:58guns here, OK? We're gonna make sure that you
- 1:09:01play by the rules, OK? Yeah, we're gonna play by the
- 1:09:04rules. We're gonna use our words.
- 1:09:06We're not gonna shoot people, OK?
- 1:09:08Parker. Parker, we don't shoot people.
- 1:09:10Do you understand all right? So this is where they got him
- 1:09:14all set on and then it goes on and she's like, all right, Mateo
- 1:09:17is next so. Billy rolls in.
- 1:09:20Yeah, my God, I love it when Billy rolls in like.
- 1:09:22This and it's so it's like extra ominous so at the
- 1:09:25dermatologist's office when you walk in because like a mole
- 1:09:30biopsy is pretty standard there and they just generally have the
- 1:09:34tools ready for you. And it looks a lot like this
- 1:09:37where it's just like a tray with a bunch of needles and gauze and
- 1:09:41a little scalpel and like also a little, it's like.
- 1:09:45A jar of. Cauterizing thing, yeah.
- 1:09:48And it looks like that like, and it freaks me out every time I
- 1:09:51go. And that that's what that Billy
- 1:09:54has on his little tricycle, and he rolls up to Mateo, who's in
- 1:09:57this like torture chair. Yeah, and it's just, it's
- 1:10:04fucking weird. And he's like, I don't know what
- 1:10:06all this shit is. There's a bunch of medical
- 1:10:07supplies and there's also this. Feels like it's a cromiotom.
- 1:10:11And he goes. I don't fucking care.
- 1:10:13So he plays the tape and he's got to take a big enough piece
- 1:10:19of brain matter, put it in a glass which will dissolve the
- 1:10:21tissue, which will then give him access to the key to get out of
- 1:10:25the trap. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:26So he's got to like, cut open his fucking.
- 1:10:28Skull Yeah. There's like a camera pointing
- 1:10:31down at his head and he can see it on the screen.
- 1:10:34He's got 3 minutes to do this. This reminded me a lot of the
- 1:10:37Saw three scene with the skull. I feel like that's what they
- 1:10:40were kind of going for. They were fall back, absolutely.
- 1:10:44And he does that, he cuts it open, he gets the little piece
- 1:10:46out and he manages to just tweeze like a chunk of brain
- 1:10:51out, which it would have been interesting, like it didn't seem
- 1:10:54to necessarily affect him or what to be taking a chunk of his
- 1:10:57brain out. Like it would be interesting to
- 1:10:59see him short wire in the face a little.
- 1:11:01Bit yeah, I thought maybe he wasn't going to have like the
- 1:11:03right motor coordination to drop that jar.
- 1:11:06I thought that's what was going to happen.
- 1:11:07I thought that that would have happened too, but no, he's
- 1:11:10totally normal. Yeah, he gets it in there and it
- 1:11:12dissolves like it's just a second late.
- 1:11:15And then the mask was and I like that.
- 1:11:17It's like one of like the Aztec faces.
- 1:11:19Yeah. It was kind of cool to
- 1:11:22incorporate that there and. It just, yeah.
- 1:11:23And it was like a reference to one of the things that Diego was
- 1:11:26telling John about during his tour.
- 1:11:28Yeah, it, it was nice. It was a nice touch.
- 1:11:31So he's dead. So Amanda and John have this
- 1:11:33talk, 'cause he's like, I am dying.
- 1:11:38I've accepted this. She's not at the acceptance
- 1:11:40phase yet. She's at the bargaining phase.
- 1:11:42She's like, maybe we can get Cecilia's dad.
- 1:11:45We know he's real and he's an actual doctor.
- 1:11:47And he's like, listen, we just, we need to do our work.
- 1:11:49This is what it is. This is what it's going to be.
- 1:11:51Yeah. And he's like.
- 1:11:52You got to carry this on for me like you are ready to do this.
- 1:11:56I'm not quite sure yet. I might have to test you two
- 1:11:58more times, but you know you were totally ready to do this.
- 1:12:02So he tells her to release Parker and see if he can follow
- 1:12:05the rules. Now Billy trikes over to
- 1:12:09Gabriella and she isn't taking the tape.
- 1:12:12She's like, no. I like this.
- 1:12:14This I probably the most realistic.
- 1:12:15Reason, yeah. She plays it for a second.
- 1:12:17It's like, I want to play a game.
- 1:12:18She's like Nope and then just throws it across the hall.
- 1:12:20And John, just like, pulls down his microphone.
- 1:12:22He goes. That's not how this works.
- 1:12:24Yeah, but we're going to still do this and which is like you're
- 1:12:27setting yourself up for a bad time because he, I mean, she
- 1:12:30doesn't get an explanation now. She just gets yanked up into
- 1:12:33like the the sky here for a second.
- 1:12:36And he does explain. He's like, listen, I've done
- 1:12:39chemotherapy, I've done radiation therapy.
- 1:12:42You can't fuck around with a radiation machine.
- 1:12:44So if you don't want to burn to death, you're going to need to
- 1:12:48break your foot and break your hand and release yourself from
- 1:12:51the chains. Yeah, if he wasn't going to do
- 1:12:53that, Amanda was, because Amanda's latched onto her as
- 1:12:56like the person that she relates to because of the drug issues.
- 1:12:59Like, yeah, it was going to happen.
- 1:13:02Yeah. So the thing starts, this thing
- 1:13:04is fucking crazy. Is a radiation machine just
- 1:13:07pointing right at her. And she has.
- 1:13:10She's got a chain around her right wrist and one against her
- 1:13:14left ankle. I think it's backwards.
- 1:13:16I think it's right ankle and left wrist.
- 1:13:18All the way around. So Cecilia instructs her to get
- 1:13:21the the ankle first because it'll sway her out of the way,
- 1:13:24which she does. She breaks it.
- 1:13:27The the machine moves, Don't worry.
- 1:13:29John thought about this. And.
- 1:13:32I thought it would have. Here's the thing.
- 1:13:33Yeah, I accept that he can make things move.
- 1:13:37I thought a swivel would have made more sense, like it just
- 1:13:40turns a little bit instead of a slide.
- 1:13:43I'm gonna go with the engineer here and see.
- 1:13:47I'm gonna say that. They I think John was just
- 1:13:49showing off. I think he could have done
- 1:13:51either and I think he chose the harder one to show off.
- 1:13:53What if he like looked over a man?
- 1:13:55He's like watch this shit I mentioned to you whenever this
- 1:14:01is going on, I like how whenever each hit like the sound gets a
- 1:14:04little bit higher pitch, it's like a doe re me like and so she
- 1:14:11does it. She gets her wrist also and she
- 1:14:14falls to the ground. She survives her trap and
- 1:14:16they're like, OK, we got to get her to the hospital.
- 1:14:18She won a game. It's fair, but as the.
- 1:14:21Sacker is not following the fucking rules and he's gotten
- 1:14:25his gun out of the locker. He demands Cecilia's keys
- 1:14:30because it turns out they're an item.
- 1:14:33So Amanda because she doesn't want John to be shot, unlock
- 1:14:37Cecilia and Cecilia slaps the shit out of her.
- 1:14:42Yeah, she's like, all right, we're going to play new game.
- 1:14:44We live, you die. Fuck you.
- 1:14:46Yeah, So she forces John to lock himself up in the trap.
- 1:14:51And he says Gabby deserves to live because she beat her game.
- 1:14:55And it's Cecilia says, oh, does she now?
- 1:14:57And she goes over and just breaks her neck.
- 1:14:59Yeah. Just steps on it with her heels.
- 1:15:01Oh my God, it's. Brutal.
- 1:15:02Would it have killed you to have dropped her off at the hospital?
- 1:15:05She's not going to have a good time.
- 1:15:06But no, Cecilia is a psychopath. She makes Amanda shackle herself
- 1:15:11as well. The money is upstairs and
- 1:15:14they're telling Parker they're like, listen, Cecilia, we'll
- 1:15:16burn you too. Do you don't think she won't
- 1:15:18kill you? You're another loose end.
- 1:15:20And he goes, no, we're in love. And she's like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:15:22yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:24So they're about to get the game, the final game started,
- 1:15:27but then they start hearing this thud outside and they look over
- 1:15:30to the camera and they're like, oh, OK, oh, wait, no, there's no
- 1:15:33camera there. But like, so he's like, all
- 1:15:35right, we got another player, so she goes out there.
- 1:15:37No, they see like the security footage.
- 1:15:40Yeah. And she says that she wants the
- 1:15:42last memory John to have to be of somebody innocent dying
- 1:15:46because of him. This is the most panicked I've
- 1:15:49ever actually seen Tobin Bell portray John Kramer in the
- 1:15:53franchise. And I think that really like
- 1:15:55sells it that like they had a contingency plan or they knew
- 1:16:00what was happening, but the fact that like Carlos was not
- 1:16:03supposed to be there. There was an interesting thought
- 1:16:06process behind introducing this kid to the movie too.
- 1:16:09Because they they wanted to find a way for us.
- 1:16:13Like, because we know that he survives.
- 1:16:15Like none of these people are going to die, so how can you
- 1:16:18make them like? What are this?
- 1:16:20Thing about yeah, what are the things?
- 1:16:21So they're like, OK, like, well, let's do a kid.
- 1:16:24And everybody was against the idea because apparently
- 1:16:26Lionsgate was like, no kids can get hurt for a long time.
- 1:16:29But then Josh Soberg was like, well, Hereditary, all kinds of
- 1:16:36other movies with kids getting hurt here lately.
- 1:16:38Like, it's kind of a thing that people are allowed to get away
- 1:16:41with now. And everybody's like, OK, cool.
- 1:16:42And then everybody's like, all right, yeah, let's, let's blood
- 1:16:44board this kid. Yeah.
- 1:16:45And so when Carlos is brought in, Amanda says, who is that?
- 1:16:49And John says a friend and a terrible unforeseen consequence.
- 1:16:55I hope somebody describes me like that someday.
- 1:16:59I was thinking to myself like, that's a weird name.
- 1:17:03So they get Carlos hooked up to the other side of this blood
- 1:17:07teeter totter and he tells Carlos no halar and they.
- 1:17:12Together as a group? Yep.
- 1:17:15This, you know, if you don't have the time for Muzzy, here
- 1:17:19you go. You've got, you've got salt in.
- 1:17:21Spanish with John Kramer. OK, so the game starts of course
- 1:17:26and so so like, how do you start this?
- 1:17:29He goes, it's activated by the subject and she goes of course,
- 1:17:31because you can't be responsible for killing somebody.
- 1:17:33I love that like game recognized game.
- 1:17:36She knows all about his shit and like his in a way, like studied
- 1:17:40him. I think that's an interesting
- 1:17:42detail. Well, she does.
- 1:17:43She's like jig fucking saw. Like I can't believe it's you.
- 1:17:46Like, and I'm kind of surprised that he has such a reputation at
- 1:17:49this point because it's between movie one and two.
- 1:17:53So he's not like done a shit hit ton yet.
- 1:17:55But yeah. OK, so the game starts.
- 1:17:58They are being blood boarded. And it's like thick.
- 1:18:03It's flotted blood. Yeah, so first John pulls his
- 1:18:08lever, so he goes back and he is taking the full bronze.
- 1:18:12Of Blood sees what's happening, he figures the game out.
- 1:18:15And that little motherfucker Hala.
- 1:18:17He did it, Yeah, he pulls it and then he gets some.
- 1:18:20Allows John to catch his breath for a minute, and then John
- 1:18:23pulls it back himself. And this time he holds on to
- 1:18:26Yeah, so Carlos can't pull it back.
- 1:18:28That was, yeah, that was a good touch.
- 1:18:30Meanwhile. Cecilia's like, all he had to do
- 1:18:33was just let the kid blood board himself.
- 1:18:35Whatever, let's go get our money.
- 1:18:36And Parker's like, whoa, yeah, yeah, that's fucked up.
- 1:18:40I guess we're not having kids together.
- 1:18:44So they go up there to go get the money.
- 1:18:46They were digging around up there and she sets off a trap.
- 1:18:50Yeah, she picks up a duffel bag that she thinks has the money in
- 1:18:53it. It just has her bank receipts.
- 1:18:54Yeah, and it turns all the lights red, though a door closes
- 1:18:58and locks. This makes me think of like,
- 1:19:03traps in like a video game, like where you accidentally set it
- 1:19:07off, and then like, the game maker's like, all right, we're
- 1:19:10gonna make you feel anxious during this, so we're gonna do
- 1:19:13red lights and smoke effects and lock the door.
- 1:19:17Yeah, sorry. Another thing the
- 1:19:18cinematographer said is like, I wanted every game to be a
- 1:19:21different, like, like a new light starts.
- 1:19:23So it's like a different game. OK.
- 1:19:25So like, that's why this one started.
- 1:19:27Like the new light shines like all right, new game's starting.
- 1:19:30That's. That's clever.
- 1:19:32Yeah. So doing this stops the
- 1:19:34bloodboarding trap. So John and Carlos are free.
- 1:19:37They're like covered in blood. I'd say, and at this, as all
- 1:19:42this is happening, Parker's wondering out loud.
- 1:19:44You were the last game to play, but this was a two person game,
- 1:19:47so who was supposed to be there with you?
- 1:19:49That's. When we get the little.
- 1:19:50Dumb Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun
- 1:19:52Dun Dun Dun Dun Dun Sox. Yep.
- 1:19:54So, John. Saw.
- 1:19:56Disabled the bullets and Parker's gun, so there was never
- 1:20:00actually any danger that I just let him think there was.
- 1:20:03So Cecilia can't shoot the lock on the door.
- 1:20:06He also was learning about Parker from Diego and then
- 1:20:10located him and Henry Kessler. We'll find out in a moment with
- 1:20:14Detective Hoffman. Yeah, you hear his voice on the
- 1:20:17phone, which I when we were watching this in theaters, I was
- 1:20:20like, fuck yeah. I thought that was the only
- 1:20:22reference we were going to get to, but I was willing to accept.
- 1:20:24That yeah, yeah. He's like, I found the man that
- 1:20:27you wanted. They have one air hole in the
- 1:20:32room to save them from this like corrosive fog that's coming in
- 1:20:38and they start fighting and she just fucking stabs Parker.
- 1:20:42Was I looking at this run, Wasn't it having an effect on
- 1:20:45his skin because he looked down in his hand?
- 1:20:46So she's gonna have like some damage done.
- 1:20:50But absolutely. OK, yeah, she she won't be
- 1:20:52breathing it in, so at least it won't affect her lungs.
- 1:20:55Yeah, so she sticks her head through the little thing there
- 1:20:59and she watches them walk out. So sorry to reference Top Model
- 1:21:05twice in an episode, but they're a college cycle.
- 1:21:09They have this really weird photo shoot where they have to
- 1:21:11look like stuffed hunting trophy heads.
- 1:21:15You know how like people will mount deer heads?
- 1:21:17They have a photo shoot where they do that.
- 1:21:19And that's what she looks like with this.
- 1:21:21Yeah, kind. Of I can see it, yeah.
- 1:21:24I mean, it's like, it's like a straw swat.
- 1:21:28You know, yeah, yeah, with a little like cross.
- 1:21:30Like you just kind of like stick your head through.
- 1:21:31Him, yeah. Yep.
- 1:21:33So John's like, all right, Carlos and Amanda, let's get out
- 1:21:37of here. Yeah, he gives Carlos the real
- 1:21:39bag of money, and then they walk out like as a happy family, like
- 1:21:43they're holding hands and cuddled together.
- 1:21:45Carlos thinks him, which, like, why?
- 1:21:49Like he's kind of responsible for him being blood boarded like
- 1:21:53that. This kid's not shaken up enough
- 1:21:55for the fact that this happens. Carlos recognizes it was
- 1:21:58Cecilia. I'm sure he does, but he's not
- 1:22:01really face. He's just kind of like, oh,
- 1:22:02thank you. And he's smiling as they're
- 1:22:04walking out like. Listen.
- 1:22:05That would traumatize me. Carlos passed his test and he's
- 1:22:09a new disciple of Jigsaw. Yeah, he dude, he, he better.
- 1:22:13Honestly I feel like they really planted a good seed for this.
- 1:22:17Absolutely. Like somewhere down the line,
- 1:22:19make him a jigsaw. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:22:22A good like a good thing to do. So OK.
- 1:22:26Mid credits, yes, we cut to the bathroom.
- 1:22:29Yes, the bathroom, yeah. And John and Hoffman are there
- 1:22:33with Henry going. Where's your fucking scar,
- 1:22:35Henry? Oh, man, I love this.
- 1:22:38And Mark or Hoffman, he's like, of all of the people you chose
- 1:22:43this game, you picked John Kramer.
- 1:22:46That's what I call epic bad luck.
- 1:22:49And then we get the I love how it gets really cheesy here too.
- 1:22:53Like maybe this is like whole thing is to be like that.
- 1:22:55Closest brings the soap opera energy to this franchise.
- 1:22:58We get the camera and it starts spinning and then Henry is like
- 1:23:02no. And then the camera's like.
- 1:23:04Whoa. It's like a machine.
- 1:23:06It's like razors doing cat biscuits.
- 1:23:09Yeah. And like.
- 1:23:10Yeah. And the camera just gets all
- 1:23:12spinning. It's like, whoa.
- 1:23:13And then the music is all like, whoa.
- 1:23:15Like everything just kind of goes like and then like the
- 1:23:20movie ends and. Yeah, everybody laughs.
- 1:23:23Yeah. It's a good time.
- 1:23:25Yeah. That was a great way to end that
- 1:23:26movie, man. That was still.
- 1:23:28A10 I think it's such a good movie.
- 1:23:29It was such a good like it had all of the things that you like
- 1:23:33about a Saw movie and introduced some new things and I liked it.
- 1:23:37Yeah, I'll bump it to fuck it. Yeah, this is probably one of
- 1:23:41like the most legit good ones. It had a lot of build up too,
- 1:23:45which is not something that you get a lot with Saw movies.
- 1:23:48A lot. Of times for a while we were
- 1:23:50just taking it for granted that we were going to have one every
- 1:23:52year. Yeah.
- 1:23:52And they like, well, not that I'm talking about like build up
- 1:23:55in the story. Oh yeah.
- 1:23:56Be like, it's like 30 to 40 minutes before we even get to
- 1:23:59the traps. Like, they lay a lot of
- 1:24:00groundwork to get the like to make you invested in this, which
- 1:24:04is, you mean it's not really a thing that we have a lot and saw
- 1:24:07movies. But I think that's mostly
- 1:24:09because we don't need that with most of them because it was such
- 1:24:11an ongoing story. They had like, that moment to
- 1:24:14reset and, like, breathe some fresh air into it for a minute
- 1:24:17here. So yeah, it's a it's a good
- 1:24:19time. I liked it a lot.
- 1:24:22God, I guess the only thing that we could change is just fix
- 1:24:25Shawnee's wig I guess. Put a little more like yeah, but
- 1:24:30don't make it so clear she was an afterthought.
- 1:24:32Yeah, for sure. OK.
- 1:24:36Who did you relate to? Do we not want to talk about
- 1:24:38Talia and Zoe? Oh yeah, Yeah, Talia.
- 1:24:40So what do you think of this? OK, so we got to talk about them
- 1:24:43together because Zoe was fighting herself in the kitchen
- 1:24:46and Talia had to go stop Zoe from fighting herself in the
- 1:24:48kitchen, which I feel like is really kind of a metaphor for
- 1:24:50John Kramer in this movie. So I think Talia quite enjoyed
- 1:24:56it. She was very fully immersed.
- 1:24:57So she gives it A10 as well. To be fair, we have given her
- 1:25:02she has a God complex. And dyslexia.
- 1:25:09Yeah. So she does probably relate to
- 1:25:10John Cramer there. And do you want to explain that
- 1:25:12joke or do you want? To just, no, that's it, that's
- 1:25:14the joke. I'm not going to explain the
- 1:25:16joke. It takes away the funniness of
- 1:25:18it. Who do you think, Zoe, who is
- 1:25:22Zoe's ultimate hunter or Zoe's ultimate warrior?
- 1:25:26What is it that we called it? Zoe's ultimate warrior.
- 1:25:31Yeah, because that is like this show basically where Ultimate
- 1:25:36Ninja Warrior or whatever, God, I I mean, she's got to respect
- 1:25:44Amanda in this movie for going out there and collecting all
- 1:25:47these people. But I think she also she
- 1:25:51respects she also does the technique that the people did
- 1:25:54when they like Blind side John and like kidnap him.
- 1:25:59Just like jumping out of the blue and then like kind of
- 1:26:01getting all up in your face and being aggressive, kind of
- 1:26:03getting you with the confusion there.
- 1:26:05I don't know what's happened. My name is John.
- 1:26:08Like she does have to scout. Like she'll jump out at her just
- 1:26:10like who are you? Who are you?
- 1:26:13Hear me out. My votes for Carlos.
- 1:26:16Why Carlos? Because Carlos is out there,
- 1:26:18calls on a racket and tapping, yeah, tapping.
- 1:26:23And he gets pulled in and and wins a fight he didn't even know
- 1:26:26he was gonna have so. OK, yeah, you know what?
- 1:26:29Sure. I mean, he didn't do any
- 1:26:30hunting. But that kid, you know, he, he
- 1:26:33did good. Yeah, OK.
- 1:26:35All right, who did you relate to?
- 1:26:37Who did I relate to? I guess I related to the person
- 1:26:46being dropped off by Diego before he gets pignapped 'cause
- 1:26:52I don't like to drink and drive. I'm responsible like that, so I
- 1:26:56will Uber so. That's fair.
- 1:26:59I relate to Hoffman because the entire time in this movie I was
- 1:27:03just thinking to myself of all of the.
- 1:27:04People. Closest all of the people.
- 1:27:06You decide to fuck with you fuck with John Kramer.
- 1:27:09That is epic bad luck. I related hard to that one.
- 1:27:12It's like that's exactly what I've been thinking.
- 1:27:14I remember my mom when we watched this together.
- 1:27:17She like when she the scam reveal happened she goes of all
- 1:27:22the people to fuck off. I know.
- 1:27:24I mean like, that's the worst guy to.
- 1:27:27Yeah. Even people that don't directly
- 1:27:30fuck with him, he's like, I hate that person.
- 1:27:32I'm going to get them in a death trap.
- 1:27:34But this time you actually fuck with him directly.
- 1:27:37Yeah, you're going to get fucked up in the most satisfying of
- 1:27:41ways, OK? Which trap do you think you
- 1:27:46could survive? Because we don't do dream
- 1:27:47sequels for. This right?
- 1:27:51God, these are some. These are some rough traps.
- 1:27:54This I can't cut off my leg, I can't take out my brain.
- 1:27:58So. I can do the Diego one.
- 1:28:01I can cut out the pipe bombs. I I I am too squishy about
- 1:28:07knives. I think I'd have to do
- 1:28:09Gabriella's. Yeah, hers would be my second
- 1:28:13one. I've.
- 1:28:13Broken enough bones that like, yeah, it will suck, but I also
- 1:28:16know it'll heal, you know? Yeah.
- 1:28:18Oh and also I think it depends on your partner for the.
- 1:28:22Also, I have weak bones so I don't think I'd have to like
- 1:28:24whack them that often. I think I just like.
- 1:28:26I think I could do like one and I'd be good.
- 1:28:28I think you'd be OK with the blood one.
- 1:28:31If you have a good partner, you can survive that one because you
- 1:28:33can just you got to like share the load.
- 1:28:35You'll be fine. You just got to wait for them to
- 1:28:36try and find money, which you know, so a lot of the thing
- 1:28:42about this movie is a lot of them are survivable other than I
- 1:28:46would say Mateo's because his like you're you don't know what
- 1:28:52you're going to hit when. You're.
- 1:28:52Yeah. Like that's the thing I get
- 1:28:54John's point about like the, the brain is like, neuroplasticity
- 1:28:58is a hell of a thing. It's really amazing.
- 1:29:00I recommend reading up on it because it's cool as hell.
- 1:29:03However, yeah, you don't know what you're grabbing out of your
- 1:29:06brain. Yeah.
- 1:29:07And that you can fuck up some very serious stuff.
- 1:29:11That's the cool thing about this movie though is other than his I
- 1:29:14feel like he got the short end of the stick for.
- 1:29:17I don't know why him specifically that should have
- 1:29:19been Cecilia, but a lot of them are survivable.
- 1:29:24It's just the ones that didn't survive it.
- 1:29:26They waited too long to do it. Yeah.
- 1:29:28So, yeah, OK. So I'm gonna go with Diego.
- 1:29:32OK. All right, All right.
- 1:29:36I think that's stuff for. That tagline.
- 1:29:38Tagline. Let's see.
- 1:29:45Oh, oh, OK, hold on. I was going to try and do
- 1:29:48something with like a game and timeouts and try and tie it into
- 1:29:52the time jump, but I can't quite put the pieces there together
- 1:29:55for it. Good bones, for one.
- 1:29:58Yeah, you got to think that one through.
- 1:30:05I think it would just be funny to just have it be this time.
- 1:30:09It's epic bad luck. New game, it's called We win,
- 1:30:16you lose, epic. Bad luck.
- 1:30:19Yeah. Jigsaws have feelings too.
- 1:30:29OK, I'm gonna put a pen in that one.
- 1:30:33Another one I have is exact. His revenge or your revenge?
- 1:30:40My revenge. All right, let's use your
- 1:30:44reason. I'm tired of thinking of this
- 1:30:46one and that. One made me laugh, so let's.
- 1:30:47Just go with this. I don't.
- 1:30:49Know Roll back the tape. OK, all right.
- 1:30:56Well, I guess that means it's time for reviews.
- 1:30:59OK, so I'm going to go with an Internet review that I pulled
- 1:31:03from IMDb, so one out of 10. Oh.
- 1:31:06Wow. I love the original, saw it was
- 1:31:08clever, unique and went full circle.
- 1:31:10I don't. I don't care much for the gore,
- 1:31:13but do like the psychological aspect to the Saw movies.
- 1:31:16I read lots of reviews before going to see this tonight,
- 1:31:19promising it to be much like the original.
- 1:31:21It was not. It had a promising start, a
- 1:31:23mediocre twist, and it seemed to run out of its own clever
- 1:31:26torture tricks slash rigs. I was bored throughout and my
- 1:31:29eyes were dropping at some point.
- 1:31:31I wanted to like it, but it got worse and worse and there even
- 1:31:34seemed to be a bit at the end when the credits started to roll
- 1:31:37that just seems added in there like it was forgotten, which I
- 1:31:43think he kind of said. To you.
- 1:31:44I did. I did make that joke.
- 1:31:46Odd that people are reviewing this so highly.
- 1:31:49It's not scary or entertaining. It's not even clever in the
- 1:31:53terms of the torture rigs and a real anti climax.
- 1:31:57And probably about time they stopped making these.
- 1:32:01I guess, and again, I think this all comes back to what is it
- 1:32:04about the original Saw that you like will dictate what you like
- 1:32:08about any sequels. Do you think they like the
- 1:32:11police part? The procedural stuff.
- 1:32:13They might they might enjoy the the mystery surrounding Jigsaw
- 1:32:18like it might be one of those it's scarier if you don't know
- 1:32:21anything about the killer. Maybe it's that, I don't know.
- 1:32:25I think if you're the type of person that likes the drama of
- 1:32:29all of it, this is a really good one.
- 1:32:32I've. Seen some too.
- 1:32:33Yeah, it's a bit different. Yeah.
- 1:32:36It doesn't necessarily fall in line with the other ones and it.
- 1:32:39Is it is weird and it is uncomfortable to sit with
- 1:32:41thinking about the fact that you're relating to the killer,
- 1:32:45but you know. But it's different.
- 1:32:47Yeah, it's different. Which I guess if you're wanting
- 1:32:49a classic sock experience, it might not be that, but you know,
- 1:32:53like it's not too far from the formula, it's just a little bit
- 1:32:56different. Whatever, I get it.
- 1:32:59OK, customer reviews. We'll start off with our alone
- 1:33:03Instagram one, which was from Cube Saves who says weirdly the
- 1:33:05best saw in a while, which yeah, they were kind of fumbling there
- 1:33:10for a minute. Jigsaw is OK, It wasn't the
- 1:33:14best. So a lot of people were lesson
- 1:33:16enthusiastic about it and I think a lot of people were also
- 1:33:19kind of not super enthusiastic with Spiral.
- 1:33:23Yeah, it's. Like a return.
- 1:33:25Return to form in a way. I guess it depends on who you
- 1:33:28ask. That's also true.
- 1:33:30Yeah. So, yeah, it is kind of weird
- 1:33:33that they like had one of the better saw movies of the entire
- 1:33:35franchise this way in the game. But I'm kind of glad that they
- 1:33:38are able to do that. So absolutely.
- 1:33:41OK, let's do reviews over on Twitter.
- 1:33:44We got quite a few over. Yes, Twitter was popping y'all.
- 1:33:50OK, we'll start off with Lord Zombie, who says what happens to
- 1:33:53the pod after that. Oh, that's because I said it was
- 1:33:55our last one for now. We go do a different franchise.
- 1:33:59Don't you? Worry.
- 1:34:00And yeah, As for Saw, XI would put it in my top three Saw
- 1:34:04movies. It was great to see Jigsaw and
- 1:34:06meet an equal. The traps are really good, if
- 1:34:08not set up in a little collector style.
- 1:34:11Where did he get the time? Nice to see it not deal with
- 1:34:15past movies. I you know what?
- 1:34:17Yeah, like I think that. And I think maybe that does kind
- 1:34:22of help with some of the Saw fatigue.
- 1:34:23It's like not having to remember what happened in past movies.
- 1:34:26Yeah, I think that that probably does too.
- 1:34:28Like you're not having to deal with all that continuity, which
- 1:34:30is kind of nice. The traps were pretty elaborate,
- 1:34:34very more so than in that era of like saw two.
- 1:34:40Which was like a. House and one was just a
- 1:34:43bathroom. So but yeah, no, I I do like
- 1:34:48what they did with it. I like the approach that they
- 1:34:50had, Kevy, Kev says. I was really happy with this.
- 1:34:53Having Tobin Bell back, a return to roots of sorts was very
- 1:34:56enjoyable, and it was pulled off completely reasonably, in a way
- 1:35:00that didn't try to rob the viewer of sensibilities.
- 1:35:02Big bonus on top of an otherwise good story in film.
- 1:35:05OK, yeah, I mean, Tobin's been there most of the time, so it's
- 1:35:10not like we were missing him or anything, but it was good to
- 1:35:13bring him back in a meaningful way.
- 1:35:15Yeah, make him like an actual feature.
- 1:35:17Yeah. Focal point of the movie for
- 1:35:19sure. Steven Cunningham says, I
- 1:35:21honestly loved it. I didn't expect much and it blew
- 1:35:24my expectations out of the water.
- 1:35:26I think that's what a lot of people kind of came in with.
- 1:35:28Nobody expected it to be as good as it is, Fluffy Uzu says.
- 1:35:35My only complaints about this film are that it lacks a lot of
- 1:35:38what I loved about the original franchise.
- 1:35:40No soap opera detective work and crazy twist.
- 1:35:42Cecilia is also too comically evil.
- 1:35:45But the worst part is that I felt the climax was
- 1:35:48underwhelming. Rest was amazing though.
- 1:35:50I do, yeah. No, I definitely, I talked about
- 1:35:53already that I felt like Cecilia was too much.
- 1:35:58And, you know, I, I talked about, I enjoyed seeing Hoffman
- 1:36:01pop up. Yeah.
- 1:36:02We like the soft soap opera thing.
- 1:36:04Yeah, I do love it. But yeah.
- 1:36:06But, you know, like, I think it was cool to at least give it a
- 1:36:10rest for a second, like, do something a little bit different
- 1:36:13with it, you know, Like, that's nice.
- 1:36:15Yeah. Maybe we'll get more cops stuff
- 1:36:17next time, or maybe they'll abandon it all together.
- 1:36:19If they get Kevin Reuter, I'm going to bet money that it's not
- 1:36:22going to do anything with COPS because he was on record saying
- 1:36:25he ace that part. Of it.
- 1:36:27Yeah, final review was from Chad, who sent us on long
- 1:36:31thought out one, he says. I enjoy the soft franchise
- 1:36:35overall. Even the worst Century Seven,
- 1:36:37it's still fun. And this could be a case of
- 1:36:40recency bias, but X might just be my favorite.
- 1:36:43The traps are incredible and inventive, smartly written
- 1:36:45script that once again shows you the inherent evils of the
- 1:36:49medical system and the con artists lying in wait.
- 1:36:52And yeah, Kramer is still dealing out his privileged form
- 1:36:56of justice and teaching, but you are just so on his side the
- 1:36:59whole time and get to explore his character and even more
- 1:37:02depth. This is a weirdly feel good
- 1:37:05movie for me. I mean for Christ's sake, we get
- 1:37:07to see a child get blood boarded.
- 1:37:09Let's hope the follow-ups can at least match this one in quality.
- 1:37:13Yeah, I it's, it's nice to actually root, like be on his
- 1:37:18side for once. It it gives you a little bit
- 1:37:21better understanding where he's coming from other than being
- 1:37:23pissed off of the world. Like you understand why he's mad
- 1:37:26at these people specifically? Yeah, and I liked the idea of
- 1:37:30them dealing with people that we can all relate to and hating and
- 1:37:34fucking con artists and scammers.
- 1:37:36So like, they're just a low, dirty people.
- 1:37:39Yeah. And it's always fun seeing them
- 1:37:42get what they deserve. Yeah, I absolutely love it.
- 1:37:44I really do. I'm.
- 1:37:46I'm worried for them because I'm worried that they have raised
- 1:37:50the bar so high with this one that the next one is just.
- 1:37:53Going to be able to and because they've been working on this one
- 1:37:55for years. Yeah, they had a lot of time to
- 1:37:57tool. Yeah, things with this one.
- 1:37:59Yeah, I maybe that Chris Rock intervention was a bit of a
- 1:38:03blessing. OK, so that's it for socks and
- 1:38:09that means it's a for soft franchise.
- 1:38:11We don't release our ranking at some point.
- 1:38:14We don't have a definitive date yet, but it it'll be out there,
- 1:38:17yeah, eventually. Yeah, a whole.
- 1:38:20Bit but that means that we can start focusing on next week's
- 1:38:23movie, which is our final prime movie and it's also our
- 1:38:27anniversary movie and that's going to be society and right
- 1:38:33now I'm sorry, Morgan, if you can watch it on Sling TV, Plex,
- 1:38:38Fubo TV, Philo, YouTube primetime, Amazon Prime premium,
- 1:38:43YouTube TV premium or you can rent it from Google Play or
- 1:38:46Fandango at home. Is it on shutter right now?
- 1:38:49I don't see AMC listed, so I don't.
- 1:38:51I think so, no. Yeah, I guess I'm kind of
- 1:38:55surprised. I thought that this would have
- 1:38:57been A to be movie, but I guess it's not.
- 1:38:58Yeah, so it's, if you haven't seen the movie, it's wild.
- 1:39:04And I don't want to say anything else because I don't want to
- 1:39:06spoil anything. But yeah, I mean, like, if you
- 1:39:08want to watch it for free, watch it on Plex.
- 1:39:10It's like that's the only free app that I see.
- 1:39:12So yeah, it's just fucking weird.
- 1:39:16Don't if you don't know what's going to go on.
- 1:39:18And then don't just kind of go into this one blind and thank us
- 1:39:22later or. Hate us later.
