Inside Karyna Shuliak’s Life With Jeffrey Epstein (Part 1) · The Epstein Chronicles

• 0:00
Speaker 1: What's up everyone and welcome to another episode of the
• 0:03
Speaker 1: Epstein Chronicles. The New York Times has a new piece
• 0:07
Speaker 1: out about Karinia Shulak, Jeffrey Epstein's girlfriend, at the time
• 0:12
Speaker 1: that he died. And there's certainly a lot of questions
• 0:16
Speaker 1: that still hang in the air when it comes to
• 0:18
Speaker 1: Karinia Shulak and where exactly she fits in in the
• 0:22
Speaker 1: story overall. So in this episode, we're going to jump
• 0:25
Speaker 1: into an article from the New York Times talking about
• 0:28
Speaker 1: Karinia Shulak and providing us a bit more context about
• 0:32
Speaker 1: who she is and what her role was. Like I said,
• 0:36
Speaker 1: this article was published by the New York Times and
• 0:39
Speaker 1: the headline, Meet the Woman Who Stands to Inherit Much
• 0:42
Speaker 1: of Jeffrey Epstein's Fortune. This article was authored by Matthew
• 0:47
Speaker 1: Goldstein and Sharon Otterman. The young dentist was smiling and soft-spoken,
• 0:54
Speaker 1: wearing a Columbia University fleece jacket, and holding her long
• 0:57
Speaker 1: hair back with a clip. She was introduced by her assistant,
• 1:01
Speaker 1: simply Dr. Corinna. But what the patient, who had come
• 1:04
Speaker 1: to the office in December, expecting to see a different dentist,
• 1:08
Speaker 1: didn't know, was that she was being treated by Dr.
• 1:11
Speaker 1: Corinna Shulak, the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's girlfriend. Yeah,
• 1:17
Speaker 1: probably not the person I want rooting around in my mouth.
• 1:22
Speaker 1: Can I have somebody besides Nurse Ratched, please? Dr. Shulak
• 1:27
Speaker 1: was the last person Mr. Epstein called before he killed
• 1:29
Speaker 1: himself in his jail cell in 2019, allegedly. I'm glad
• 1:35
Speaker 1: they're so sure about everything, huh? I mean, Matthew Goldstein
• 1:38
Speaker 1: and Sharon Otterman, I'm sure they trust the Trump administration
• 1:41
Speaker 1: in all other areas. But all of a sudden, they're
• 1:45
Speaker 1: sure that Epstein killed himself, huh? Okay, I guess. She
• 1:52
Speaker 1: could inherit as much as $ 100 million from his estate,
• 1:55
Speaker 1: including a 33-carat diamond ring, according to a trove of
• 1:59
Speaker 1: investigative records released by federal authorities. But on that winter day, Dr.
• 2:05
Speaker 1: Shulak was working as a part-time dentist in an unremarkable
• 2:08
Speaker 1: office in downtown Brooklyn, according to dentists who work or
• 2:12
Speaker 1: used to work at the practice. That must be wild.
• 2:17
Speaker 1: You find out that you were working with one of
• 2:19
Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein's, you know, girlfriends, one of his confidants. And look,
• 2:24
Speaker 1: I don't know what Karinia Shulak was up to, if anything,
• 2:27
Speaker 1: as far as Jeffrey Epstein's criminal operation goes. But I'm
• 2:31
Speaker 1: sure she has some information that could be helpful. Whether
• 2:35
Speaker 1: that's incriminating or not, I have no idea. But she
• 2:38
Speaker 1: was certainly around. She has intimate knowledge of who that
• 2:41
Speaker 1: dude was, what his mind frame was, and what was
• 2:45
Speaker 1: going on. That final phone call. And I think that's
• 2:49
Speaker 1: very important for us to hear. and I think Congress
• 2:53
Speaker 1: should subpoena her. Her attempt to forge something of a
• 2:57
Speaker 1: normal life, though, was soon shattered when the Justice Department
• 3:01
Speaker 1: released 3 million pages of investigative files and emails it
• 3:05
Speaker 1: had gathered on Mr. Epstein. The files, released in late January,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: included thousands of intimate emails between Dr. Shulak and Mr. Epstein,
• 3:15
Speaker 1: and dozens of photographs of her and them together. Not
• 3:19
Speaker 1: exactly the kind of information you want to go down
• 3:21
Speaker 1: in the record, right? Yeah, you know, Jeffrey Epstein's girlfriend,
• 3:25
Speaker 1: no big deal. Suddenly, their nearly eight-year relationship was on
• 3:31
Speaker 1: vivid display for all to see. They had fights about sex.
• 3:35
Speaker 1: With both wanting more at different times, she placed orders
• 3:38
Speaker 1: to a sexual wellness company for couples. She periodically sent
• 3:42
Speaker 1: them links to graphic pornographic videos. In some emails, they
• 3:46
Speaker 1: discussed birth control pills and acne medications. and treatments. Dr. Shuliac, 37,
• 3:53
Speaker 1: emerges as a complicated and unusual figure in Mr. Epstein's world,
• 3:58
Speaker 1: based on a close review of the files and conversations
• 4:01
Speaker 1: with several people familiar with her. A native of Belarus
• 4:06
Speaker 1: who met Mr. Epstein when she was 21, she's not
• 4:09
Speaker 1: identified herself as a victim, nor have federal authorities considered
• 4:13
  Speaker 1: her a co-conspirator in Mr. Epstein's sex trafficking. And that's
• 4:17
Speaker 1: what I'm talking about. She's occupying a pretty complicated space here.
• 4:23
Speaker 1: Like she hasn't called herself a victim. And we have
• 4:27
Speaker 1: no information that she was partaking in any of the abuse.
• 4:32
Speaker 1: So where does she fit in? In my opinion, she
• 4:36
Speaker 1: fits in as somebody that has a whole lot of knowledge.
• 4:39
Speaker 1: She can fill in some gaps. She can provide maybe
• 4:42
Speaker 1: some details about some situations that they don't have a
• 4:47
Speaker 1: complete picture of. And if they would have done a
• 4:51
Speaker 1: real investigation from the very beginning, you would think that
• 4:53
Speaker 1: they'd call her in, right? Sit her down. What did
• 4:56
Speaker 1: you guys talk about on that last phone call? What happened?
• 4:59
Speaker 1: What did he tell you? What was his state of mind?
• 5:02
Speaker 1: Is there anything that we might have missed? But God
• 5:04
Speaker 1: forbid they do that, right? God forbid they have a
• 5:07
Speaker 1: real investigation. There's no indication that the Federal Bureau of
• 5:10
Speaker 1: Investigations ever interviewed her and lawyers for hundreds of his
• 5:13
Speaker 1: victims have never deposed her. The last person to talk
• 5:17
Speaker 1: to him and the authorities never bothered to talk to her. Yeah,
• 5:21
Speaker 1: nothing odd about that. Everything is on the up and
• 5:24
Speaker 1: up here. Meanwhile, we have the Attorney General at the time,
• 5:28
Speaker 1: Bill Barr, going to visit Stone Reyes at his house
• 5:31
Speaker 1: after he was released from jail? Okay, cool. Can we
• 5:35
Speaker 1: get some contemporaneous notes on that? What did they talk about?
• 5:41
Speaker 1: He once called her his favorite and often told her
• 5:44
Speaker 1: he loved her. She had free use of a credit
• 5:46
Speaker 1: card to buy whatever she wanted They jetted around the
• 5:49
Speaker 1: world together, and he funneled payments of nearly $ 1 million
• 5:52
Speaker 1: to her over the years. He also sent tens of
• 5:55
Speaker 1: thousands of dollars to her parents in Belarus, the files reveal.
• 6:00
Speaker 1: And there is abject poverty in Belarus. Well, they have
• 6:04
Speaker 1: money for weapons of war, right? They have money to
• 6:07
Speaker 1: help their boy Putin. But besides that, not exactly what
• 6:10
Speaker 1: you would call a rich country. And when you have
• 6:14
Speaker 1: somebody sending tens of thousands of dollars back to your family...
• 6:18
Speaker 1: Certainly not the kind of thing you want to let
• 6:19
Speaker 1: go of. Over the years, she earned enough of his
• 6:24
Speaker 1: trust to help manage his properties and staff, and even
• 6:27
Speaker 1: played a critical role in his effort to buy a
• 6:29
Speaker 1: Moroccan plane just weeks before his 2019 arrest. So she
• 6:34
Speaker 1: basically stepped in and took over the role of Ghislaine
• 6:37
Speaker 1: Maxwell and Sarah Kellen Vickers. Maybe not with the abuse
• 6:41
Speaker 1: and the criminal end of it, but the logistics. Taking
• 6:45
Speaker 1: over Epstein's household. calling the shots, you know, that kind
• 6:49
Speaker 1: of thing. And again, look, I'm not saying she was
• 6:52
Speaker 1: involved in the abuse. We've seen no indication of that.
• 6:55
Speaker 1: But she was around. And I think that that's very important.
• 6:59
Speaker 1: And I think that if you were around something like this,
• 7:01
Speaker 1: you probably saw stuff, even if you don't know it.
• 7:04
Speaker 1: And that's why it's important for everybody to sit down
• 7:06
Speaker 1: with investigators. Mr. Epstein controlled the relationship, but there's little
• 7:11
Speaker 1: doubt she benefited from it professionally, personally, and financially. The
• 7:16
Speaker 1: emails reveal new details about how Mr. Epstein helped her
• 7:19
Speaker 1: get into Columbia University's dental school and how he helped
• 7:23
Speaker 1: her obtain U.S. citizenship by asking one of his female
• 7:26
Speaker 1: victims to marry her. Well, who told you about that?
• 7:31
Speaker 1: I told you there was marriage fraud and immigration fraud
• 7:34
Speaker 1: and a whole host of other shit nobody's talking about.
• 7:36
Speaker 1: And look, Epstein didn't do all of that on his own.
• 7:39
Speaker 1: There was somebody at the immigration office that was playing ball.
• 7:43
Speaker 1: There was somebody that was like, okay, we can do this.
• 7:46
Speaker 1: Send over the paperwork. Now, we'll probably never find out
• 7:50
Speaker 1: who that is because the government doesn't want to show
• 7:52
Speaker 1: their ass. And we've seen that with the redactions in
• 7:55
Speaker 1: the files. We have no idea who was engaging in
• 7:59
Speaker 1: the investigation. So how do we know who to hold accountable?
• 8:02
Speaker 1: And obviously, the law says that we should know who
• 8:04
Speaker 1: was engaging in these conversations and certainly who made the
• 8:07
Speaker 1: decision to not go after Epstein, to go after this one,
• 8:11
Speaker 1: to go after that one, and to give this one
• 8:13
Speaker 1: or that one a pass. All of that should be
• 8:15
Speaker 1: known to us. In one email, he suggested that the
• 8:20
Speaker 1: fastest way to a green card was through a same-sex marriage.
• 8:24
Speaker 1: This year, congressional Democrats accused Mr. Epstein of exploiting the
• 8:27
Speaker 1: immigration system and called out Dr. Shulak's marriage to an
• 8:31
Speaker 1: American woman, which ended in divorce, as potentially a luxury one. U.S.
• 8:37
Speaker 1: immigration authorities have not challenged the process through which Dr.
• 8:40
Speaker 1: Shulak obtained her citizenship, because that would give up the game.
• 8:44
Speaker 1: They'd have to admit, then, that what I've been telling
• 8:46
Speaker 1: you is true. And look, don't get this shit confused
• 8:50
Speaker 1: with the nonsense you see coming from people like Candace
• 8:53
Speaker 1: Owens and Charlie Kirk. We have evidence. Mountains of it.
• 8:59
Speaker 1: They have speculation. And if you're looking for a real cover-up,
• 9:03
Speaker 1: this is it. This is the whole game right here.
• 9:09
Speaker 1: And that's why they're fighting tooth and nail to make
• 9:11
Speaker 1: sure you never see the real details. As of this spring, Dr.
• 9:17
Speaker 1: Shuliac had been living in the Upper East Side condo
• 9:20
Speaker 1: building in which Mr. Epstein's brother, Mark, has a financial stake.
• 9:24
Speaker 1: And that's the building at East 66th Street. And if
• 9:27
Speaker 1: you remember, that's where Epstein kept all of his models
• 9:30
Speaker 1: and his employees. And through a partnership with his brother, allegedly,
• 9:34
Speaker 1: they had access to a group of apartments in that building.
• 9:40
Speaker 1: Through her lawyer, she declined to comment. In a brief interview,
• 9:43
Speaker 1: Mark Epstein said, I only wish that woman the best. Oh,
• 9:46
Speaker 1: I'm sure. Do you wish any of the survivors the best, Mark?
• 9:51
Speaker 1: Anybody ask him about that? A friend of Dr. Shuliax
• 9:53
Speaker 1: from Belarus, who once shared an apartment with her in
• 9:56
Speaker 1: Brooklyn and asked not to be named to protect her privacy,
• 9:59
Speaker 1: said she believed Dr. Shulak truly loved Jeffrey Epstein. Well,
• 10:03
Speaker 1: that's possible. I'm not going to say that, you know,
• 10:07
Speaker 1: she wasn't in love with him, but I will tell
• 10:09
Speaker 1: you this, he didn't love her. This man was incapable
• 10:13
Speaker 1: of real love. He was a monster, okay? A straight
• 10:17
Speaker 1: up monster. And I'm not just talking about the sexual deviancy.
• 10:21
Speaker 1: All of it. The shit he was engaging in. Arms running.
• 10:28
Speaker 1: Collecting compromise. Ruining people's lives. All of it is just heinous.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: Everything this guy was involved in. Corinna Shulak had lived
• 10:36
Speaker 1: in New York for only nine months when she met Mr.
• 10:39
Speaker 1: Epstein in late March of 2001. She had moved from
• 10:42
Speaker 1: Belarus on a temporary student visa to study English at
• 10:45
Speaker 1: a school in Manhattan. She was making about $ 15 an
• 10:49
Speaker 1: hour as a dental assistant and applying for waitressing jobs
• 10:53
Speaker 1: while she tried to figure out how to continue the
• 10:56
Speaker 1: dental education she had begun in Belarus. A young woman
• 11:00
Speaker 1: from Siberia who introduced her to Mr. Epstein the final show.
• 11:04
Speaker 1: And that's how deep this dude's reach went. All the
• 11:06
Speaker 1: way into Siberia. Make no mistake. He had his boy,
• 11:11
Speaker 1: Jean-Luc Brunel, on the prowl. And Jean-Luc Brunel had no
• 11:15
Speaker 1: problem going to far-flung places to find girls to abuse,
• 11:20
Speaker 1: for him and Jeffrey Epstein to share. And when I
• 11:22
Speaker 1: tell you it was worldwide, this is what I mean.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: The woman said in an interview with the New York
• 11:27
Speaker 1: Times that she had periodically been expected to recruit other
• 11:31
Speaker 1: young women, presumably to provide Mr. Epstein with sexualized massages.
• 11:36
Speaker 1: And that appeared to be Mr. Epstein's intention with Dr. Shuliac. Yeah,
• 11:40
Speaker 1: he had to have a whole roster, right? He had
• 11:42
Speaker 1: a menagerie of women and girls. that were quote-unquote coming
• 11:46
Speaker 1: to give him massages. We all know what that means.
• 11:50
Speaker 1: They weren't going to give him massages, just like you're
• 11:52
Speaker 1: not going to the weed dispensary to buy a six-pack
• 11:54
Speaker 1: of beer. The woman, who asked not to be named
• 11:59
Speaker 1: because she said Mr. Epstein had abused her, had sent Mr.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: Epstein a photo of Dr. Shuliac describing her as pretty.
• 12:07
Speaker 1: After some back and forth, it was decided that the woman, Dr. Shuliac,
• 12:11
Speaker 1: and her roommate from Belarus would meet Mr. Epstein at
• 12:14
Speaker 1: his Manhattan mansion. Go slow, the woman advised Mr. Epstein
• 12:18
Speaker 1: in an email. Their first encounter fit the familiar pattern
• 12:23
Speaker 1: he used with other women. Epstein flattered, pampered, and tried
• 12:27
Speaker 1: to manipulate her. The files show. Almost immediately, he offered
• 12:31
Speaker 1: to help her realize her dream of becoming a dentist.
• 12:35
Speaker 1: And the trap was set. Hook, line, sinker. But the
• 12:40
Speaker 1: emails show that Dr. Shulak pushed back, at least in
• 12:43
Speaker 1: the first few months. A few weeks after they met,
• 12:46
Speaker 1: she wrote to Mr. Epstein telling him she had thought
• 12:49
Speaker 1: he was a remarkable person, but, she added, that she
• 12:52
Speaker 1: could not accept his help due to some views which
• 12:55
Speaker 1: strongly stay in my mind, no matter how stupid it
• 12:57
Speaker 1: may look. I wish you all the best, and I
• 13:00
Speaker 1: apologize if I wasted your time, she added. Though she
• 13:04
Speaker 1: doesn't specify what upset her, their introduction occurred after Mr.
• 13:08
Speaker 1: Epstein had pleaded guilty in Florida to a charge of
• 13:11
Speaker 1: soliciting prostitution from an underage teenager. and had been accused
• 13:15
Speaker 1: of abusing dozens of other teenagers. His response was to
• 13:19
Speaker 1: berate her for listening to rumors and stories. She responded, Mr. Epstein,
• 13:24
Speaker 1: who was 58 at the time, did not take no
• 13:26
Speaker 1: for an answer. The emails, released by federal prosecutors, show
• 13:28
Speaker 1: that he bought Dr. Shulak and her roommate tickets to
• 13:30
Speaker 1: see The Lion King, on Broadway and dinners at restaurants.
• 13:46
Speaker 1: He treated her to a scenic helicopter ride around Manhattan.
• 13:50
Speaker 1: By July 2011, she had visited his New Mexico ranch.
• 13:54
Speaker 1: A few months later, his private island residence in the U.S.
• 13:57
Speaker 1: Virgin Islands. All right, folks, we're going to wrap up
• 14:01
Speaker 1: episode one right here. And in the next episode, we're
• 14:03
Speaker 1: going to pick up where we left off. All the
• 14:06
Speaker 1: information that goes with this episode can be found in
• 14:09
  Speaker 1: the description box.
