- 0:02There's a question that sits underneath almost every
- 0:04leadership conversation I have. It's really the first thing
- 0:08people say. But the longer I sit in the
- 0:10room, if there's enough trust and enough space, it usually
- 0:15surfaces. It sounds something like this.
- 0:19I've been doing this a long time.
- 0:21I'm successful, genuinely, but I'm starting to wonder if
- 0:25there's more something different I'm meant to do, and if there is
- 0:31now what? Questions like that aren't
- 0:34warning signs. There are noticeable gap between
- 0:37the person who shows up at the office and the person you sit
- 0:41with on the drive home. Many leaders ignore questions
- 0:45like these, mostly because the rooms they're in don't usually
- 0:48have space for it. The board meeting doesn't have
- 0:52an agenda item for it. The performance review doesn't
- 0:56measure it. And the people who need
- 0:58something from you, your team, your clients, your organization.
- 1:03They need your answers, not your deep questions.
- 1:08So the question goes unanswered. After years of working alongside
- 1:12leaders, I know these questions also apply to the organizations
- 1:16they lead. As leaders and organizations
- 1:19become more successful, The leadership, the teams, the
- 1:24partnerships, the work itself no longer aligns with the mission
- 1:29and heart of what the organization was built to be.
- 1:33And as a result, we can miss our true impact of what we and the
- 1:39organization are truly capable of.
- 1:43It's a tension behind a similar question that is at the heart of
- 1:46this very podcast. How can we distill the tension
- 1:50between what we built and what we're built for?
- 1:55That same distillation process works in US.
- 1:58In fact, it's the distillation process that led me to create
- 2:01the space and is the foundation of every episode.
- 2:06That process centers around the still, where heat, pressure, and
- 2:11time are applied to raw ingredients, and where anything
- 2:15that doesn't belong gets separated out, leaving only
- 2:19what's true. At the end of the day, the still
- 2:24doesn't lie. It'll always reveal what's true.
- 2:34This episode marks the 28th Crafted Clarity episode, which
- 2:38concludes season one. It was a season marked by many
- 2:41significant moments, and while I'm proud of all the episodes,
- 2:45what matters more to me are the moments that came from them.
- 2:50A leader who reached out after an episode to say I've been
- 2:54carrying the question of my purpose in my next season for
- 2:56years, and I didn't know anyone else was asking it.
- 3:00Could we meet up? Someone who said that they were
- 3:03listening to an episode in their car and had to pull off to the
- 3:06side of the road to restart it. They'd had a difficult week and
- 3:10wanted to capture the raw thoughts and insights the
- 3:13episode had stirred in them, Conversations that started
- 3:17simply because someone shared an episode with someone else who
- 3:21came to mind. They recognize something the
- 3:24other person needed to hear. These moments are exactly what
- 3:29the space was built for. I've been invited on to other
- 3:33podcasts, into interviews, and even onto a radio program in a
- 3:37major market. Not because I built a platform,
- 3:41but because of the tension. I talk about the one between
- 3:45what we built and what we're built for.
- 3:49People feel that I've met leaders through the space that I
- 3:53wouldn't have never crossed paths with otherwise.
- 3:56Relationships continuing around a shared question rather than a
- 4:01shared industry. I didn't build crafted clarity
- 4:05to become an influencer. What I was after was something
- 4:08simpler and harder to manufacture and honest, poor
- 4:14with the right person at the right moment.
- 4:18So whether you've been here from the beginning or you just found
- 4:21the space today, this space is for you.
- 4:26But before we look ahead, I want to take a moment the way a
- 4:29distiller does after a whiskey run.
- 4:33If you've ever been inside a distillery, you've probably seen
- 4:36the large stills. Some are copper pot stills and
- 4:41others are tall column stills made of stainless steel.
- 4:45They both work the same way. Through heat, time, pressure.
- 4:51These stills turn the raw ingredients of whiskey, grains,
- 4:55water, yeast into the amber spirit in your glass.
- 5:00Stills are the source of truth. They remove everything that
- 5:04doesn't belong in the whiskey, so what's left is what the
- 5:07whiskey was made for, its intended purpose.
- 5:12What you might not see is that after a whiskey run, the
- 5:16distiller pauses production to assess what the last run
- 5:19produced and to understand what's formed and to carry that
- 5:24knowledge forward into what comes next.
- 5:27That's what this episode is. 27 episodes is a run worth pausing
- 5:32on, just like the distiller's pause.
- 5:37Season 1 is complete, and before we move into the next season, I
- 5:42want to pause to assess what it produced.
- 5:47Crafted Clarity started one night when I was staring into a
- 5:50whiskey glass around a fire pit. I've been sitting there thinking
- 5:55about how that whiskey got into the class, how ordinary
- 5:59ingredients go through the right process to become something
- 6:03extraordinary. I realized it was the
- 6:07distillation process in the heart of the distiller that made
- 6:10the difference. The spirit in that class had to
- 6:14go through heat, fire, pressure, and time and a lot of time
- 6:19waiting in order to become whiskey.
- 6:23Each process reveals something different in the journey.
- 6:27And that's when it hit me and I literally said out loud, This Is
- 6:31Us. As I thought about that last
- 6:35part of the process, the aging in the barrel, it all made
- 6:39sense. When whiskey ages, the seasons
- 6:44do most of the work in the transformation of the whiskey
- 6:47from something ordinary to something incredible and
- 6:51significant. Hot summers draws whiskey into
- 6:55the wood. Cold winters pull it back,
- 6:58bringing flavors and elements into the spirit, and along the
- 7:02way, a portion of the whiskey evaporates, never to return.
- 7:08Distillers call the missing spirit the angels share, and
- 7:11they accept this loss because they know that it's the loss
- 7:17that concentrates the depth of what remains.
- 7:21You and I have raw ingredients. Our jobs, our gifts, our
- 7:25talents, our experiences. And we all have those moments in
- 7:30our lives where we feel the heat, the hard seasons, the
- 7:34pressure, the transitions. We didn't choose.
- 7:39That's our still doing the same transformative work as it does
- 7:43with whiskey. And I knew sitting there that I
- 7:47had to build a space for this conversation.
- 7:51Not just a podcast, but a space. Like two people sitting down
- 7:56with something honest in the glass, saying the things that
- 7:59don't get said anywhere else, with others listening, leaning
- 8:03in to listen because they feel it too.
- 8:08That's practical clarity. But what I didn't fully
- 8:13anticipate is that this space would do its work on me as well.
- 8:18The journey from what I built to what I'm built for.
- 8:22And along the way, I've met others on their journey.
- 8:28So what did all these episodes actually produce?
- 8:31Well, looking back across the full season, 3 themes kept
- 8:36surfacing. 3 tensions that leaders were carrying at the
- 8:40distillation process kept illuminating from different
- 8:43angles. The first theme was loss, The
- 8:48kind of loss that comes with formation.
- 8:52We talked about this loss in the very first episode through the
- 8:55metaphor of the angel's Cher, the one I just talked about, the
- 8:59portion of the whiskey that evaporates from the barrel
- 9:02during the aging process and never returns.
- 9:06Distillers accept this loss as simply part of the process.
- 9:10They know that without this loss, the whiskey will never be
- 9:13what it's intended to become. Leaders recognize this
- 9:18immediately because every leader who has been through a real
- 9:22season of formation knows exactly what they've had to
- 9:25release a role that no longer fit a definition of success that
- 9:31belonged to someone else, a version of themselves they
- 9:36performed for years before they understood it wasn't really
- 9:40them. We also talked about the loss
- 9:44that comes with the ending of a season in episode 6, when good
- 9:48years run dry. Naming the loss without calling
- 9:52it failure was something a lot of leaders hadn't been able to
- 9:55do before. The second theme was identity
- 10:00underneath the role. This one kept surfacing in
- 10:04different forms across the season.
- 10:07The question underneath it was always the same.
- 10:11Who are you when you remove the title?
- 10:15When the role you've mastered stops reflecting the person
- 10:18you're becoming, what's left? In episode 11, Purpose over
- 10:23position, we name the gap between what you do and who you
- 10:28are. In episode 13, Listening for
- 10:32Your Calling, we went further, not just naming the gap, but
- 10:37asking what do it mean to actual follow what you were built for,
- 10:43rather than what you were simply good at?
- 10:47That distinction between calling and competence landed
- 10:50differently than I expected, because leaders are often so
- 10:54practiced at performing competence that they've stopped
- 10:58asking whether the work still reflects their calling.
- 11:02This theme gave leaders language for something that they've been
- 11:05feeling but couldn't quite articulate.
- 11:09And once you have the language, once you can name the gap,
- 11:14something shifts. The tension becomes workable
- 11:17instead of just uncomfortable. The third theme was seasons.
- 11:24We're always in a season, either coming into one, leaving one, or
- 11:29going deeper into one. We talked about the human
- 11:32experience of being in a season and not fully understanding what
- 11:36it's for. Episode 2 The Space between
- 11:41named the waiting, the invisible internal work that has to happen
- 11:46before anything visible can change.
- 11:49Most leaders have little framework for that season.
- 11:52They usually experience it as stagnation or even failure.
- 11:58Episode 18 What happens when you stay in a season too long?
- 12:03Went somewhere harder when familiarity becomes a substitute
- 12:08for alignment and episode 15 named the other side of that.
- 12:13When everything changes instantly and you didn't see it
- 12:16coming. Seasons waiting, change timing.
- 12:23These aren't leadership topics most content addresses honestly.
- 12:28But there were a lot of leaders. That's where they actually live.
- 12:32Without the language for what's happening in them.
- 12:36Those three things, loss, identity, underneath the roll,
- 12:41and seasons, aren't the only things that we explored, but
- 12:45there's a thread that runs through the distillation
- 12:48metaphor in this first season, and what they produced taken
- 12:53together was something I fully didn't anticipate when I
- 12:57started. Permission to carry the question
- 13:01without the need to resolve it immediately.
- 13:05Language, to name what had previously been unnamed.
- 13:09And the discovery. And maybe the most significant
- 13:12of all, that none of us have to carry it alone.
- 13:17That was season 1. Many podcasts seem sequential
- 13:23episodes that build on the previous one or walk through
- 13:27chapters of a book. I'd like you to think of this
- 13:31one differently. Think of it like a whiskey
- 13:34flight. When you go on a whiskey tour,
- 13:38you're usually offered a tasting flight, a sampling of very
- 13:41different whiskeys, each with a different story, a different
- 13:45purpose, and a different finish. The distiller offers you a range
- 13:50of expressions and invite you to find out.
- 13:53Find which one speaks to you. Our conversations are like that
- 13:58whiskey flight. Some conversations will land
- 14:02immediately, and some won't make sense until later.
- 14:07And the one that makes, and the one that matters most, is
- 14:10usually the one that names what you've been tasting in your own
- 14:14life without realizing it. 27 episodes so far.
- 14:19Different tensions, different stages of the distillation
- 14:23process, different seasons of the leadership journey, all
- 14:26organized around the same distillation process.
- 14:30Distilling that tension between what you've built and what
- 14:34you're built for. And just like a whiskey tasting,
- 14:39you start where you want, revisit what resonated, and find
- 14:42the wand that speaks to where you are right now.
- 14:47If you're in a waiting season, the kind where nothing visible
- 14:51is happening but something is forming underneath, check out
- 14:55episode #2 if you're navigating a season where something good is
- 15:00ending. Not through failure, just
- 15:03through time. Episode 6 is for you.
- 15:08If you're carrying a role that no longer reflects who you
- 15:10actually are, try episode 11. And if you've been in a season
- 15:16too long and you stop questioning whether it's still
- 15:19the right 1, Episode 18 could speak to you.
- 15:25If you're in the middle of a a change that you didn't choose
- 15:28and didn't see coming, episode 15 is that conversation.
- 15:33These episodes meet you wherever you are.
- 15:37And just a side note that you'll find an episode guide at
- 15:40craftedclarity.net to help navigate the episodes by theme
- 15:45as we continue to add more. So thinking back to the
- 15:50distiller, after the distillers pause and after holding up what
- 15:54formed, understanding what worked, and carrying that
- 15:57knowledge forward, they fire up distill again.
- 16:02They continue the production. They lean into new ideas,
- 16:06building on what forum to create something even more purposeful,
- 16:11something that couldn't have existed without everything that
- 16:13came before it. That's where we are.
- 16:18As Season 2 gets under way, you'll find new conversations
- 16:22each week, each one built around the same whiskey distillation
- 16:26theme, a different tension, a different stage, a different
- 16:30season of the leadership journey.
- 16:33And for every episode, we'll have Tasting Notes.
- 16:37A free download on the website. No sign up required.
- 16:41Just some reflections to sit with after the conversation ends
- 16:44to help you remember what you thought, what inspired you, and
- 16:48what you might need to sit with a little bit longer if you want
- 16:53to go a little deeper. If you want the conversation
- 16:55that happens beyond the episode, I invite you into the tasting
- 17:00room. That's our monthly e-mail.
- 17:03It's not a newsletter. It's more like a letter from the
- 17:05fire pit, a reflection that goes further into what we're
- 17:09exploring here, the kind of conversation that happens when
- 17:13the podcast ends. But the glasses are still
- 17:16helpful. And we'll also have more guest
- 17:21distillers, fellow travellers who are navigating their own
- 17:24distillation in willing to name it honestly, leaders who've been
- 17:29through something real and are inviting us into the
- 17:32conversation. And I also want to give you a
- 17:37glimpse of what else has been distilling.
- 17:41Leaders have been reaching out not just to share what an
- 17:44episode meant to them, but to continue the conversation.
- 17:48Sometimes it's over coffee, sometimes it's over lunch.
- 17:52Wanting to go deeper than a podcast allows.
- 17:56And I've been listening. What I'm hearing underneath
- 18:00those conversations is a space is needed to bring leaders
- 18:04together who are all living this tension.
- 18:08So we're developing the Crafted Clarity leadership experience,
- 18:12an immersive experience held at local distilleries that takes
- 18:15everything that we explore in the space and bring it to life
- 18:19in a way that a podcast never quite can.
- 18:23Part distillery tour, part Crafted Clarity live, all
- 18:27wrapped up with whiskey tasting. If that resonates.
- 18:31And if you're one of the leaders who've been wanting more than a
- 18:34podcast, stay connected. That's where you'll hear about
- 18:38it first. Which brings me to the tasting
- 18:42notes for this episode. If you've ever gone to whiskey
- 18:47tasting, you take notes of what you tasted, what stood out to
- 18:51you, and what you want to remember.
- 18:54Here are my tasting notes from today.
- 18:57Yours might be different. You're always in a season,
- 19:02coming into one, leaving one, or going deeper into one.
- 19:07And that season has a purpose, even when you can't see it.
- 19:12Whether you recognize it or not, you are being distilled.
- 19:16Heat, pressure and time are doing their work in you.
- 19:20Not to break you down, but to concentrate on what's true, to
- 19:26remove what doesn't belong, to reveal what's always been there,
- 19:30underneath the performance and underneath the pressure and the
- 19:34accumulated weight of other people's expectations.
- 19:40The tension you feel, that persistent gap between what
- 19:43you've built and what you're built for, isn't a warning sign.
- 19:48It's the still doing its work. And if you're trying to name
- 19:53what this tension is, if you're trying to find the language for
- 19:57the season you're actually in, consider Season 1 as your
- 20:02personal catalog to explore different tensions, different
- 20:06stages, different seasons of the leadership journey.
- 20:11One of them is for where you are right now.
- 20:15And Speaking of tasting notes, there are tasting notes for
- 20:18every episode at craftdeclarity.net.
- 20:21No sign up required. I want to close today where we
- 20:27started that fire pit, that glass that evening where
- 20:32something was born. I didn't know then what I know
- 20:36now. I didn't know that a question I
- 20:39was carrying personally would become a room that other leaders
- 20:43needed. I didn't know that a metaphor I
- 20:46found sitting by a fire would become the language for
- 20:49something that matters to people I've never met, in cities I've
- 20:54never visited. But the still does not lie.
- 20:59Heat and pressure and time have a way of surfacing what is
- 21:03actually true in whiskey and in US.
- 21:07What comes through when you trust the process is worth
- 21:10everything it costs to get there.
- 21:14If you're carrying the question, you're in the right room.
- 21:18If this space has given you language for something you've
- 21:21been carrying, I encourage you to pass it on.
- 21:24There might be someone in your life who needs to find this
- 21:28room. Thanks for being on this
- 21:32journey. And remember, clarity isn't
- 21:35found, it's crafted. Thanks for listening to Crafted
- 21:42Clarity. If you're a leader wrestling
- 21:45with the tension between success and significance, or if you're
- 21:48trying to align your work with a deeper calling, I'd love to
- 21:51connect with you. If your organization is facing
- 21:54questions about strategy, whether it's alignment, ROI, or
- 21:58building confidence in your team.
- 21:59This is the work we do every day at ibrand.
- 22:02And if you walk this journey yourself, or maybe you're right
- 22:05in the middle of it, I'd love to hear your story and maybe even
- 22:08shared here on the podcast. You can find me at
- 22:12craftclarity.net.
