Latest / That Car Show / Who Broke the Lambo?
Transcript
- 0:00If you ever don't want attention, don't break down in
- 0:02Lamborghini at Diablo at rush hour.
- 0:04This week on that car show, Ryan dodges a bullet by almost
- 0:10driving a Diablo, but luckily it broke down before he was able to
- 0:14break it down. We're joined by our good friend
- 0:19Michael. You share some insights into
- 0:23somehow and sometimes you shouldn't meet the ties of your
- 0:26dreams. And there was one specific car
- 0:28that that really kind of head that home.
- 0:33I talk about driving a Hellcat in 106° Redford Racing School.
- 0:40We talk a little bit about LA car culture, what's changing,
- 0:43and maybe we're just getting too old for it.
- 0:46And Ryan gets, Yep, Ryan gets behind the wheel of his dream
- 0:53McLaren. Michael shares some insights
- 0:57into the new exhibit at the Peterson.
- 1:00Totally awesome 80s and 90s. It gives us some real insights
- 1:03around the typhoon cars that maybe we didn't even realize
- 1:05existed. That's it.
- 1:08And more this week on that Castro, Hey, welcome to this
- 1:13week's that car show and joined by Ryan, but not Lindsay this
- 1:17week. Ryan has been to a goodwill
- 1:20clearly near my house because he said he's wearing a vise back
- 1:26display. So that doesn't that didn't look
- 1:28good on me. I think it doesn't.
- 1:29Look, good on me either. You're only seeing the top half
- 1:31here. Which you look, You look great,
- 1:33right? You look.
- 1:34Great, Lindsay, is that what you did?
- 1:37Yeah, it's one of those 80s like workout videos for those
- 1:43listening to us, not watching us.
- 1:44Ryan is wearing a very fetching Maya's Mount sweater in Blue
- 1:51Lee. I want to say most people aren't
- 1:54watching this and you really should be watching this.
- 1:57You can find us on Spotify and YouTube most of the time so.
- 2:02Yeah. So if you want to see what he's
- 2:03actually wearing, yeah, get on Spotify or YouTube.
- 2:07Lindsay is on yet another adventure this week, so we won't
- 2:11say where, but she'll talk about it the next time she's online
- 2:13with us. But we are joined by our good
- 2:15friend Michael. So Michael, welcome to the show.
- 2:17Thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me, gentlemen.
- 2:20It's a pleasure to be here. I'll be a poor substitute for
- 2:22Lindsay, but I'll do my best. No, I think you're a great
- 2:25substitute for Lindsay. Absolutely.
- 2:27Kind of our fifth Beetle, our 4th that car show host, right.
- 2:32So it's good to. Have you trying to be?
- 2:34I'm still auditioning it sounds like.
- 2:36I think we are too. We all are.
- 2:38We all are. That's the secret.
- 2:40And Michael, you're in LA, is that right?
- 2:42I am, I am beautiful sunny weather never changes LA.
- 2:47Nice. And Ryan, you're at home.
- 2:49I am. I'm in the garage and it's a
- 2:52beautiful day here in Denver, so.
- 2:54And I am in Phoenix, it is 106° and we'll talk about it in a
- 2:59minute, but I've been driving race cars at 106°.
- 3:04My my British skin can't cope. You weren't in a Super Mario
- 3:08outfit this time, were you? No, that's reserved for Corvette
- 3:11meetings only. Secret Joke for one of our
- 3:15previous podcasts. So I'm keen to understand what
- 3:18you folks have been up to. Michael, I know you sent us some
- 3:20notes. You've been messing around with
- 3:22some pretty fine equipment, so maybe they'll start with you.
- 3:25Sure. In my former life, I I recently
- 3:28left a 25 year career in entertainment, most recently the
- 3:32last 18 years as an as an agent. And the only reason I say that
- 3:36is because a former client reached out to me, a former
- 3:39director client that I used to work with before I switched to
- 3:42my current profession in the automotive space.
- 3:45And his father-in-law unfortunately passed away.
- 3:48And his father-in-law is a bit of an eccentric guy, but he had
- 3:51like, I think he had 27 cars in two different buildings and, and
- 3:55some industrial area here in town.
- 3:58And, you know, he wanted what I do now is, is, is help, you
- 4:02know, consult and, and help people either acquire cars, sell
- 4:06cars, but more importantly, try and value them and do a lot of
- 4:08PP is because, you know, officially with the auctions and
- 4:11everything that's going on around town and this day and
- 4:13age, you kind of, you know, want to put hands on something in
- 4:16most instances, especially from a, you know, a buyer that's out
- 4:18of state or, or you know what not.
- 4:20Anyway, Long story short, he had these 27 cars across all genres,
- 4:26all things, but but some of the the notable things for me, they
- 4:29had a it was like a 10,000 mile Grand National GNX and right,
- 4:36you'll like this little factory GNX, right, right.
- 4:39So Buick Grand National GNX, which was they, I, I forget how
- 4:42many few, they made a couple 100, but it was a, a
- 4:46collaboration between McLaren, which they licensed the McLaren
- 4:49name, a company called ASC, American Sports Sport, American
- 4:54Specialty company. They were the company that did a
- 4:57lot of small production runs in the 80s and 90s for major
- 5:00manufacturers. As a matter of fact, Ryan, This
- 5:02is why I bring back to you and your port level Porsches.
- 5:04They used to build the Cabriolet 944 for Porsche because Porsche
- 5:08didn't have the capacity to do it themselves.
- 5:11And so they did a lot of American muscle cars.
- 5:13They did a lot of Mustang stuff, but they for one year only did
- 5:17an 87. And, and they licensed the
- 5:19McLaren, you know, the British McLaren name and it was ASC
- 5:23McLaren. And they did Mustangs.
- 5:24They did this GNX, which is just a Buick Regal with, with a, you
- 5:29know, hopped up engine. But these are now $250,000 cars.
- 5:33Like no one gave a shit about it for years.
- 5:36And now all of a sudden they're big money cars.
- 5:38So I got a chance to drive that, which drives like a 80s GM car,
- 5:42as you'd imagine, but I got to ride in AII.
- 5:46Don't know much about Zondas, Pagani Zondas, but this is I
- 5:50think a 7.3. So I think it was like the, this
- 5:52is like an early 2000s Zonda and it's as beautiful as you think
- 5:56it is. And it rides and drives is worse
- 5:59than you think it would. And then he had a AA53 Corvette
- 6:04that had been totally rest of modern and whatnot and, and, and
- 6:07new chassis and all that. And so that was a that was a fun
- 6:09one. And then he had a 2005 Ford GT,
- 6:13which honestly, that's one that's one to ride in.
- 6:18I didn't get to drive that one, but I got to ride that one.
- 6:21The thing you don't think about is, and everybody talks about is
- 6:24the cut out the roof where the door hits.
- 6:27So it's it's fun to get in and out of, but it's impossible to
- 6:30park because you have to basically swing the the door
- 6:34entirely wide to get out of the car.
- 6:36Because if not, you know, you're kind of you know.
- 6:39So anyway, thanks for letting me talk about that a little bit,
- 6:42Dan. But yeah, these are some amazing
- 6:43cars that the family's trying to figure out what to do with.
- 6:45But at the end of the day, you know, the cars that that you'll
- 6:48never meet your heroes. And I thought that Zonda was
- 6:50going to be something that I would cherish forever as far as
- 6:52just the experience. And honestly, the GT, for me
- 6:55anyway, was the most, you know, cuz those cars are only a couple
- 6:59model years apart. But the quality, I mean, when
- 7:02you look at the Bagon, the Zonda and see the, the, the bolts will
- 7:06have, you know, the inscriptions in them and what not, like every
- 7:10bolt will have it and every bolt is turned to where it's, you
- 7:13know, I like the level craftsmanship in that car is
- 7:15amazing. It's just not as it's not as
- 7:19exciting I think is. Once you're in, it might
- 7:21probably look straight from the outside.
- 7:23Yeah, isn't that funny? I mean, you know, there's GTS.
- 7:26I've never driven once. If you're listening, you've got
- 7:281. Won't let me drive it.
- 7:29Please do. I I've always liked them.
- 7:31There was a time when those things were clogging up Ford
- 7:33dealer lots, if you can believe it, right?
- 7:35They were practically giving those things away.
- 7:37And I love that they're finally getting their due.
- 7:39And the fact that sounds like you take 1 / a Zonda, I think is
- 7:43is real validation. You still put up with American?
- 7:48Yeah, you. You still put up with American
- 7:49things like the fuel gauge didn't work in this like they
- 7:51like and and like some of the things you you know, the fit and
- 7:54finish isn't what you'd expect, but you know, bring it back to
- 7:57the GNX. People forget, you know, multi
- 7:59Matic makes the Ford GT and made this like that's a small
- 8:02company. I may be wrong about the new GTI
- 8:05know multi Matic makes the most recent GT, but like these are
- 8:08not things bolted together by, you know, GM in a plant
- 8:12somewhere. I mean, even the latest
- 8:14generation NSX that was a small hand team and where I was, where
- 8:18do they build that somewhere down South.
- 8:20But my point is, is like people forget these are hand assembled
- 8:23by a company that's being contracted by a major
- 8:25manufacturer. And this is not the kind of
- 8:27quality level. This is not notwithstanding,
- 8:29obviously, but this is not the kind of quality level you'd
- 8:31expect out of your, you know, your, your Ford F-150.
- 8:34So you kind of put up with some of these quirks and, and, and I
- 8:37think sometimes people forget that.
- 8:38And, and I think to your point, Ryan, that's why a lot of them
- 8:40will initially sat on the dealer showroom so much because it
- 8:43didn't have the same kind of feel as as, you know, a Mercedes
- 8:46or a Porsche at that same price level back, you know, 20 years
- 8:49ago. Yeah.
- 8:50Yeah, Yeah. Can I segue that into something
- 8:53that I experienced a couple days ago when that was a 1991
- 8:57Lamborghini Diablo? And you want to talk about fit
- 9:00and finish as I, as I've likened to a couple other people, the
- 9:04things built like a bass boat, right?
- 9:06Or an RV, right? It's, that's kind of the, the
- 9:08level of, of, of build we're, we're talking about.
- 9:11And then we broke the damn thing about 5 minutes before I was
- 9:14supposed to be given the keys. There's something the drivetrain
- 9:18just popped and it wasn't going to.
- 9:21And that was, and that was all she, all she wrote.
- 9:25You know, I've been writing this this series for Autoblog about
- 9:28the poster cars of of my youth and first car was an F355 and
- 9:32the Diablo would would have been a perfect sort of follow up.
- 9:36But yeah, it didn't last. Well, it did last.
- 9:40It was amazing. I mean, nothing sounds or feels
- 9:44like, you know, a a Diablo, right?
- 9:46I think it's 472 horsepower big V12.
- 9:50This one had a has an Albertoni exhaust.
- 9:53So if you listen to, you know, Matt Farah and the smoking tire,
- 9:56his Countach has this Albertoni exhaust.
- 9:59In fact, Al apparently has a great nephew who who's in the
- 10:03business as well with the same last name I've discovered.
- 10:05But hell of a thing. I mean, it's wrath of God, like
- 10:10when exotics were exotics, right where you weren't quite sure.
- 10:13It's a little scary. Like it's not a, you know, a
- 10:17modern Porsche or even a a 2005, you know, Ford GT, right?
- 10:22It's just it's just amazing, amazing thing.
- 10:25I don't know that I ever want one.
- 10:27Hopefully I will get to actually drive the thing.
- 10:29I think my, my, my, what's the word?
- 10:33I'm looking for my my backup plan will be a career GT, so
- 10:36that that's OK. Oh, wow.
- 10:38But but man, my God. And if you ever don't want
- 10:42attention, don't break down in the Lamborghini at Diablo at
- 10:44rush hour on the side. Of the highway on the on the.
- 10:48We're the Golden Gate, Golden Gate Canyon, if you know where
- 10:51that is, having been a a Denver guy, Michael and it was
- 10:56beautiful while it lasted. And then we we broke down just
- 10:58beyond a turn. Shout out to the Colorado State
- 11:02Patrol. They're very, very involved with
- 11:05the Colorado grand that we do. And one of the troopers, about
- 11:0810 minutes after we broke down, pulled them behind us, turn on
- 11:10the lights and, and and, you know, made us feel a little bit
- 11:13a little bit safer. But man, what a what a thing.
- 11:18It's just a, you know, wish it would have, wish it would have
- 11:21lasted. It sounds like you dodged a
- 11:23bullet A. Long way, you know.
- 11:26Yeah, I think. Had you been driving it?
- 11:29Dan, that's all I could think of.
- 11:32If I would have felt my fault or not, I would have felt
- 11:34absolutely terrible. You know, it's it's we were
- 11:38going to do it on Friday the 13th.
- 11:40So I'm glad we didn't do it on Friday.
- 11:42The was going to feed into the whole like, you know, devil car,
- 11:46you know, that kind of thing, Diablo and I'm so glad we we
- 11:49did. I would I I don't think my bank
- 11:51account could have handled even the a small thing on that car.
- 11:54But man, what a thing you know, cars were an exotic car was just
- 12:01something different back in in the day, right.
- 12:03And then, you know, Michael, the you know, the sort of the
- 12:06evolution, right, you know, the NSX and the Ford GT and sounds
- 12:10like Pagani maybe didn't get the message.
- 12:13Just it's. I mean, I think of that car like
- 12:16that, but the Pagani specifically, I mean, you see
- 12:19the you see the quality of it, how it was, how it was
- 12:23manufactured. Maybe not assembly, yeah,
- 12:25assembly too. But like, like, but just like
- 12:27the the, the thought and the money and the and the resources
- 12:29that went into putting that thing together.
- 12:31But it's like anything else, you know, right.
- 12:34I think we talked about this, but on the from the Colorado
- 12:36Grand last year when I was driving back down to Denver,
- 12:38there was a guy in AG A4 GTD in a camo on I-70 doing, you know,
- 12:45I presume was high altitude testing because they do a lot of
- 12:48that Colorado. Like no one's putting 1,000,000
- 12:50miles on a Zonda, you know, type prototype.
- 12:54Ironically, you know, I was, I was going to make the joke about
- 12:56the, the, the Diablo that you probably could afford to fix it
- 12:58because that's when Chrysler owned them.
- 13:00So it probably wasn't probably want some Chrysler electronics
- 13:03that just something went wrong with so, but yeah, I mean, yeah,
- 13:07it's, it's it's like anything else.
- 13:09You got to put my cars die on boredom.
- 13:10And I think that's what I I kind of saw with the collection.
- 13:13I got a chance to be if you don't drive these things, they
- 13:16brake and then when they brake, they really brake.
- 13:18Although this Diablo I think has something like 68,000 miles on
- 13:21it and Brian my buddy who owns the thing.
- 13:24Thank you Brian for dealing with me and indulging me with all
- 13:26these cars. Apparently he's owner for 12
- 13:29years and not one problem. Then I get in the thing, all
- 13:33hell breaks loose so. Is he definitely going to let
- 13:35you near the Carrera GT then? Oh boy, I, I, you know, I'm
- 13:38going to ease into that one, right?
- 13:40Ease into, into that one. Boy, that's a, that's a
- 13:43beautiful thing though too. There's an F40 in the mix as
- 13:48well, but that's having some work done and so not a not a bad
- 13:51contingency plan, right, so. Now.
- 13:54Now you're that terrifyingly. Name dropping.
- 13:56Yeah, yeah, drop that mic. But you got to drive some more
- 14:00modern stuff as well, didn't you, Ryan?
- 14:02Last week. Yeah.
- 14:04You know, shout out to Rocky Mountain Automotive Press Group
- 14:08here in Denver. So if you live between like say
- 14:10LA and Chicago and you do this thing that we do, this is sort
- 14:14of our professional organization.
- 14:15So they facilitate press cars couple times a year, they put on
- 14:20what they call these, these driving experiences.
- 14:22So they get all the manufacturers together and you
- 14:23get to drive everything back-to-back to back and and
- 14:25that was pretty cool. So obviously a lot of Subarus
- 14:28and all that. I was shocked by my by the new.
- 14:31It's the WRX is at the TS. You guys know about this car?
- 14:35It's the not quite STI and and amazing car drove like the
- 14:41world's best Honda, but not quick and not sort of the WRX
- 14:46experience that I was hoping for that I thought it would be that
- 14:49like, you know, it gives the impression, you know, of if
- 14:52either one of you driven like a newer WRX.
- 14:54I know our buddy John Deisty at the First Dibs podcast has been
- 14:57underwhelmed with his own. WRX Yeah, I drove the TS at the.
- 15:02LA Oh, you did OK. So it's got like an upgrade on
- 15:05the braids, but it's again, it's just not powerful enough they
- 15:08need. To know it's not powerful, great
- 15:11ride seats are great. You know, I, I love the, you
- 15:14know, the way it feels, but I don't know why I, I, I, I take a
- 15:17BRZ or a, you know, 86 or whatever over of the WRX given
- 15:22the choice. I mean, it has such great
- 15:24potential and I, I understand that why people tune them to
- 15:27death because it just you can't hear the exhaust, right?
- 15:30This is the up level 1 right? To your point, it just, I kept
- 15:35waiting for like, you know, the VTech to kick.
- 15:37It's just never kicked in. And then it's got such a, a, a
- 15:41small band. I think red line is 6000 RPM.
- 15:44So you've got 4000 to 6000 to work with for your power right
- 15:49before you've got a shift. Again.
- 15:50It's just that it's an odd thing.
- 15:51I wanted to love it. I came away really liking it,
- 15:54but not for the reasons I thought I would.
- 15:56Strange, strange thing. Bring up a real good point,
- 15:59though, it's what is fast anymore, right?
- 16:01When a Tesla Plaid can, you know, literally make you
- 16:03nauseous. And you know, yeah, you could
- 16:06argue the Porsche idea of, you know, ribbon door poles and
- 16:10lightweight this, you know, and charging three times as much.
- 16:13But what does that feeling bring?
- 16:15And it maybe it comes down to a use case, right?
- 16:17I think we're kind of moving into a place where even a Camry
- 16:21can be fast or, or a lot of things, like you said, everybody
- 16:23loves the 86 and the BRZ because they handle well and their use
- 16:27cases great. I think when the first, you
- 16:31know, couple generations of WR came out, they were everyday
- 16:34cars that you could do fun things with.
- 16:35Now so many things are fast and and even have this sensation of
- 16:40being fast or or powerful or whatever.
- 16:43Then it comes down like, what are you using it for?
- 16:44And I think that's where people, I'm not saying you're wrong and
- 16:47how you feel about it, but then you have to change the dynamic
- 16:50of the question because then it becomes, why am I driving this
- 16:53versus Oh my God, I get like to your point about the Diablo,
- 16:55when you first got in and back when we were young, nothing did
- 16:58what that did or a few things did what that did.
- 17:00And so it was in a tight group. Now a lot of stuff is fast.
- 17:04And so it it kind of changes how we, I think for us, the car
- 17:08lovers and people that want to engage with cars, you know, more
- 17:11than just transportation. We got to figure out like, what
- 17:13are we going to do with it? Rather than it be this thing
- 17:16that's the quickest is zero to 60.
- 17:17Except, you know, all the all the old school metrics.
- 17:20Yeah, yeah, I was driving the Hellcat this week.
- 17:24Oh, so I've been to talking. About a used case car.
- 17:27Yeah, I mean this is a Radford race school, so I've done 2 days
- 17:32of high performance driving. So you know, ignoring the fact
- 17:35that it's 160° here, you are allowed the air conditioning on
- 17:39which I think I would have been a just a puddle had I not had
- 17:43the air conditioning on. But this thing we've put it
- 17:46through hell for two days, Hellcat 2 days of like you know,
- 17:51intense high speed braking. They filled the cars up with gas
- 17:56after lunch. So we went for lunch.
- 17:58They get put them to the shop, give them back to us.
- 18:01I turn mine on the tank is full. The range, I kid you not, the
- 18:05range is 88 miles. That's how much we what does.
- 18:12That equate to like MPGS. Yeah, I don't know.
- 18:15Yeah, maybe, maybe, maybe 4 if you're lucky, I think.
- 18:18Yeah, right, right. Right, right.
- 18:20But these things just take like I've come away with more of an
- 18:23appreciation for that car. I just thought that car was a
- 18:26squirt and go quick car, you know?
- 18:28Yeah. Yeah, it's heavy, over 4000 lbs.
- 18:32But we put it through auto cross, we put it on the track,
- 18:35we put it on an Oval. We did an exercise where you're
- 18:39driving up and there are a set of lights and cones ahead of
- 18:42you. And the instructor will choose
- 18:44your adventure, if you will. So, you know, one day, one time
- 18:48he might go all red and you just have to do an emergency start
- 18:50from like 65 miles an hour. Then you might have to change
- 18:54lanes because one lane has got a hazard and you know, so two days
- 18:59well worth it. It was all, it wasn't, you know,
- 19:01racecraft. It was all high performance
- 19:03driving to kind of get you more familiar with the cars, what
- 19:06they can do. I guess the number one take away
- 19:08from me was the use of ABS and steering at the same time.
- 19:13So you do an exercise, you get up to 65 miles an hour, you're
- 19:16in a lane and you have to get out of that lane to a side lane
- 19:19from 65 with your brakes on Max. So your brakes are at the 10.
- 19:25And we all achieved it, you know, a couple of rounds where
- 19:28we hit cones and stuff. But those cars are capable.
- 19:32Yeah, I got to drive the electric version of that at this
- 19:36this driving event. I guess it was the Scat pack.
- 19:40So I think the thing was like 600 and some horsepower.
- 19:44It was cool. It was neat.
- 19:46Big car, but that was kind of tight on the inside.
- 19:49Made these synthetic noises, which I didn't need.
- 19:52But it the whole time I kept thinking, you know, I wanted
- 19:58that that car you drove, right? I wanted the I wanted the gas
- 20:00car, right? I mean, it's just like that
- 20:02would have been a better experience, right?
- 20:06That said hell of a thing, but it's not the same.
- 20:09It's not the same. And I've never driven a Hellcat.
- 20:11I wanted that. Wow.
- 20:13I and it sounds like you had that, right.
- 20:15I I wanted that. Yeah.
- 20:17I don't know. Yeah.
- 20:18That experience, right? That experience, right?
- 20:21Yeah, well, if you get the chance, get on to Radford.
- 20:24It sounds awesome. Yeah, it's a, it's a great two
- 20:27days. We were, it was four of us.
- 20:29We had two instructors between four of us.
- 20:31It's good fun. Did they give you a go in the
- 20:36demon too? Or is this just about the the
- 20:38Hellcat and? I think they have a separate, of
- 20:41course, because they have a drag strip, so they have a separate
- 20:45cause for for drag racing with the Demon.
- 20:49But the Hellcats had I think over 600 horsepower, maybe 6 to
- 20:5250, and you can't use 650 horsepower.
- 20:55It's like, you know, especially when you turn attraction to
- 20:58child off car. I I was the only one that nearly
- 21:01veered off into the actual, oh really the actual Rd. up to the
- 21:04school. So the less talked about that,
- 21:07the better. That just meant you were trying
- 21:10a little. Harder.
- 21:10Exactly. Exactly.
- 21:12I heard you got to hang out with our our buddy Jorge from Tormac.
- 21:16I did. Tormac who who lives in the
- 21:18Phoenix area? I saw you guys parked next to a
- 21:21Really yourselves parked next to a really beautiful like Miami
- 21:25blue 9/11 of some variety. That was the other, so I'll just
- 21:29worry Justin Wilson, who is. Justin Yeah.
- 21:33He was with us as well. So it was Justin and and Lincoln
- 21:36from the Peterson. So Justin's just picked up.
- 21:40He got an offer he couldn't refuse on his GT3 Rs tribute.
- 21:44So these are I think it's I think there's less than less
- 21:48than 150 of these cars that he bought new.
- 21:52So he's always one of the Miami Blue Turbo S.
- 21:55So he's just picked that up and he's going to send it off for
- 21:57settling and suspension. But Jorge joined us as well.
- 22:01So it was great because I could introduce Jorge to Justin, who
- 22:03are both like almost neighbors. Oh, no kidding.
- 22:07Yeah, so Hawaii's in good form. He's just 150 episodes of his
- 22:12podcast. Yeah, Congrats to him.
- 22:14That's that ain't nothing. Let me tell you, that's a lot of
- 22:18shows. That's a lot of and commitment.
- 22:21Yeah, yeah. We need to get him on.
- 22:23We need to get him. On this stuff, yes, we.
- 22:25Do if you listen. We do yes, we do.
- 22:28Yes we do. I wanted to mention real quick
- 22:31the highlight of this experience.
- 22:33You talk about super cars and how how far super cars have
- 22:36come, exotic cars. I got to drive my first Artura,
- 22:38my first McLaren Artura and I've never lusted after a McLaren
- 22:43right. I've just never it's never
- 22:45really been quite what I've thought I wanted right, and I
- 22:49know the Artur is the quote UN quote cheap McLaren, but I think
- 22:53it might be the one I'd want. It is, I think 670 horsepower.
- 22:57It's this mild hybrid. It's it's it's it's full carbon
- 23:01fiber, right. So I mean it's rigid as all get
- 23:03out it great gearbox. You know, obviously paddles it
- 23:09was, you know, it's a, it's a target or it's a, you know,
- 23:11whatever you want to call it. So driving that thing with the
- 23:14tap down, just zipping through the gears.
- 23:16I mean, I kept likening it to if you've ever driven a Lotus
- 23:20Solis, right? Those are just things of beauty,
- 23:24but with like 3 1/2 times the horsepower, right, a little bit
- 23:27bigger and obviously better appointed and all that.
- 23:29I fell in love with with with with this thing, the Sartura and
- 23:33I I mean, it was like a, I don't know, it had like GT4 vibes, but
- 23:37it was but even more taken out of it, right.
- 23:39And obviously, you know, quite a bit more power.
- 23:41It was just fantastic. I don't know if either one of
- 23:43you have driven this, but get, you know, get the chance.
- 23:46It is. It's the cat's meow, man.
- 23:49It is really, really good. And of course, everyone says,
- 23:51oh, you got to drive the 7:50 or I don't know, I think the Artura
- 23:54is maybe what I would buy and certainly the closest thing to
- 23:57my budget, even if it is still way out of it.
- 23:59But any experience with the Artura either of you?
- 24:04No, 650 and a 575, but, you know, but you're probably
- 24:11driving it up in the mountains, right?
- 24:12You, you, you have this again, the use case to take that thing
- 24:15and yeah, yeah, really let it run out.
- 24:17You know, you see quite a few Mclarens in everyday traffic
- 24:20around LA, which kind of desensitizes you a little bit.
- 24:23But at the same time, I think to your point, Ryan, that's
- 24:25probably one of those cars that you probably could daily, you
- 24:28know, and, and it wouldn't be a terrible thing to get in and out
- 24:31of and do some small errands and with whatnot.
- 24:34So, you know, to your point, it probably is a great use case to
- 24:37have that that car for, you know, your second car or even
- 24:40your daily, you know, in the summer.
- 24:42So I will put it on the list. So thank you.
- 24:44Yeah, yeah. It is how does it work find.
- 24:46Yourself a purple one if you can.
- 24:48How does it work? Because you?
- 24:49Well, no. As in SO, you were there with a
- 24:52number of other peer journalists.
- 24:53Right. Yeah.
- 24:55There is a line up of cars which include everything from Subarus
- 24:59to electric chargers, but there's this kind of stand out
- 25:02McLaren. Yeah, that was the best car.
- 25:05But how do you get the keys for it?
- 25:06Like is there a fight? Like is it like you just have to
- 25:09have most? Of your names, there were a
- 25:11couple of Youtubers that seemed to disappear from lunch a little
- 25:14early who ended up with that car first.
- 25:16Interesting. But yeah, yeah, you just, you
- 25:20know, everyone got a chance. There aren't so many people,
- 25:22right? You know, there are, you know,
- 25:24probably fewer, fewer than 20 of us, and they're probably just as
- 25:27many manufacturer reps and all that.
- 25:28So I think just about everyone who wanted to drive the thing
- 25:30got a chance. I was with our friend Jason
- 25:34Meshnick, also from Autoblog and fuel fed here in Boulder.
- 25:38And so we, we were able to extend our time in these
- 25:41vehicles by, you know, there were two of us.
- 25:44And so one of us would drive, then we'd stop somewhere and,
- 25:46and swap. And so we got to spend a little
- 25:48more time, spend time as a passenger had a little more time
- 25:51to photograph things. But I think just about everyone
- 25:53that wanted to to drive the thing in the end had a chance,
- 25:56right? So, so, yeah, it's, it's a, it's
- 25:58a group of nice people, right? Shout out to Sarah, who, who's
- 26:01running the organization these days.
- 26:03She's doing a great job. And, and Matt Pilgrim, who ran
- 26:05it up until recently, also did a fantastic job because it is, you
- 26:08know, it is well, well managed and well planned, right.
- 26:12And and so no one's no one goes home crying.
- 26:16I got to mention real quick, there was a the most
- 26:18entertaining car at that whole thing was the new, it's the Jeep
- 26:22Wagoneer S they call it the Bev. It's, it's the, it's an, it's a,
- 26:27it's an electric car. I think it's got 600 horsepower.
- 26:31And it was the only car of the day where everyone who got in it
- 26:34laid down elevens like right away.
- 26:36I don't know what's going on in that thing.
- 26:40Not a particularly attractive car.
- 26:42I'm thrown by the Wagoneer name. You know, it should be like it's
- 26:45probably the Cherokee replacement, but probably not
- 26:47using that name any longer. But not a huge it's not the
- 26:49Grand Cherokee. It's a more of a mid sized
- 26:51thing. Holy crap, what an entertaining
- 26:53thing that was. But yeah, there were enough
- 26:57cars, you know, everyone at time, you know, there really
- 26:59wasn't a dud in the bunch. I mean, everything was
- 27:02everything's pretty good anymore, right?
- 27:05And, and none of the manufacturers are going to show
- 27:07up with anything that sucks, right?
- 27:08So, you know, that's very cool. Even the more basic cars came in
- 27:11nice trims and you know, everything was.
- 27:14Pretty nice. You, you mentioned, Michael, you
- 27:16occasionally see McLaren's in LA or assuming quite frequently.
- 27:20I, I think when we were talking the other day you said that car
- 27:22culture is really changing or you're saying change in LA.
- 27:24What are you saying? Well, you're seeing a lot of
- 27:30like 2 things are kind of happening.
- 27:32And, and, and Dan, you know, a more recent transplant.
- 27:34By the way, there is a Pagani dealer not, not a mile from
- 27:37where you are now posted, you know, in, in where you're living
- 27:40in LA. If you, if you The funny thing
- 27:43about it real quickly, the Pagani dealer, it's a glass
- 27:45fronted storefront. And if you go inside, it's a
- 27:48it's roped off area, like when you first walk in the door,
- 27:51because I, you know, it's really by appointment only.
- 27:53And they say no photos. They tell you no photos.
- 27:55There's this big sign, no photos allowed.
- 27:56But literally though, you could stand on the sidewalk and take
- 27:59care of take picture of everything that's in the
- 28:01showroom. All that being said.
- 28:04But but to that end though, like where do you see a Pagani
- 28:06dealer? Like an actual Pagani dealer,
- 28:07right? And then, you know, being in LA,
- 28:09you do get to see, you know, whether it's the the the the
- 28:13rest O mod stuff of like icons or obviously Singer.
- 28:16I'm, I'm and also gonna know which is, you know, probably 10
- 28:19miles from where singer now has their new headquarters.
- 28:21And, you know, so you get to see a lot of different things.
- 28:23But where the culture's changing, where I'm going with
- 28:25this is that, you know, cars and coffees were was started out
- 28:29here, which I know Lindsey has a great history with.
- 28:32And as you've seen those kind of morph into what they've become.
- 28:37Now you have more restrictions or people are trying to profit
- 28:40and make them more of a business rather than just a gathering.
- 28:45But what you're seeing on the other side of it and kind of a
- 28:47response to that, Dan, as you start to drive around LA, you'll
- 28:51see you pay, if you pay attention, you'll go through
- 28:53major intersections and all you'll see is tire marks because
- 28:57some of the crowd here is, you know, St. what was street racing
- 29:00back in the day, that kind of inspired fast and furious
- 29:02franchise is now St. takeovers. And obviously, you know the
- 29:06dangers of that. And that's a almost nightly
- 29:08occurrence in LA depending on, you know, the part of town
- 29:11you're in. And even some of the more
- 29:14populous parts of town, you'll see just, you know, big, big
- 29:17swirls in the in the street because someone had come in and,
- 29:20you know, done a street takeover.
- 29:21And and it's interesting to see how that has shifted from kind
- 29:25of these social gatherings to now they're they're either kind
- 29:29of trying to be money making operations because obviously, as
- 29:32you guys know, putting on an event is not an easy thing to
- 29:34do, especially, you know, in this day and age.
- 29:37But also the other part of it, the people that don't want to do
- 29:39that or don't have the money to spend or don't have the quote,
- 29:41UN quote, cool car. They've kind of found their own
- 29:44way of doing their version of the car thing, which is
- 29:48arguably, you know, dangerous in the street takeover stuff.
- 29:50But even just sort of the smaller groups that gather
- 29:53because on any given day and every given weekend and you
- 29:56know, there's, there's something going on in, in LA with the car
- 29:59scene, but it's becoming more bifurcated in my opinion.
- 30:02It's becoming not exclusionary, but it's not, it's not that kind
- 30:05of warm friendliness that I, I, I know I've heard Lindsay talk
- 30:08about and I've chatted with her a little bit the way those
- 30:10original cars and coffees used to be, even the ones in Malibu
- 30:13and that some of the ones that have been unfortunately
- 30:15discontinued, it wasn't that love of the automobile.
- 30:18Now it's like this is, you know, everybody's kind of clicked.
- 30:22It's like a high school, right? Everybody's clicked off into
- 30:24their own little groups. And I hope, I hope that changes.
- 30:27I hope that changes. And I know that Peterson does a
- 30:28great job of they did the Lowrider show, they got the 80s
- 30:31and 90s exhibit now. And, you know, hopefully that
- 30:35brings more people together and kind of brings everybody back to
- 30:37a more communal sense because it feels too, in my opinion, it's
- 30:43starting to get too too small and too too insular.
- 30:48I don't know what it's like in Denver these days with, you
- 30:50know, because you I know you guys fuel fed, which we know
- 30:52Mike does and all that other stuff.
- 30:54Are people more communal or are they going to again?
- 30:56You find your own scene. Yeah.
- 30:59There's so much going on for a city, you know, our size.
- 31:01Who's the guy Burns that did like the Civil War PBS series?
- 31:07You know, I'm talking about what, Ken Burns.
- 31:09I was just listening to a, Let's just listen to an interview with
- 31:12him and he was talking about how, you know, back in, you
- 31:15know, 1858, there was some professional baseball player who
- 31:18was like, you know, ruing how, you know, the spirit of the game
- 31:21was gone. And it wasn't the game that he
- 31:23grew up with, right? You know, and sometimes I wonder
- 31:26if it's just not us getting older, right?
- 31:29Maybe, you know, but maybe, right.
- 31:33And I guess you just sort of have to find your own thing.
- 31:35We get some of that crap here too, right?
- 31:36You know, this. I don't think the street
- 31:38takeover is quite so much right, but there's some of that.
- 31:41You see these yahoos on like dirt bikes, you know, zipping
- 31:43around. They the cops don't seem to see
- 31:45them, but every the rest of us do, right, But I think we're
- 31:49pretty tame here in in Denver. I mean there are a lot of
- 31:51events. You know, I don't make it too
- 31:53just because they're not quite my my scene, but but you know,
- 31:58there are a lot of events that I do right.
- 31:59Fuel fed, you know, you mentioned is a great one.
- 32:02I don't know, I guess maybe as we get older, we look for
- 32:05different things out of it, right?
- 32:06And I think the older I get, the less I want to sit around in a
- 32:10parking lot, right? The more I want to be out
- 32:12driving, you know, time is precious and that kind of thing.
- 32:17So I, I don't know, it's, you know, the Peterson definitely is
- 32:21killing it. I think you've talked about the
- 32:23Peterson heart and soul, you know, beating heart of of of car
- 32:25culture right in LA and maybe the the greater country and that
- 32:2980s nineties thing that was going on.
- 32:31I'm not going to try to pronounce the Italian show that
- 32:34what just happened with Machanism, right, with Maurice
- 32:38Merrick, who I think MC the thing, which is awesome to see.
- 32:42It's so good that there is like a stabilizer, right, That like
- 32:45that, right, that there is sort of a mother ship or whatever.
- 32:47I think keeps things in check a little bit.
- 32:49But it's interesting. I I guess it's something that
- 32:52will always change, right? And always, you know, maybe the
- 32:55older we get, the more foreign some of it will seem.
- 32:58But it should be friendly, right?
- 33:00It should be fun. I don't know well.
- 33:02I went up to Good Vibes last Friday, Los Angeles Crest
- 33:07Highway to Newcomb's branch. I met Dan McGuinness to the
- 33:10bottom. Of course you did.
- 33:12And then Matt, Dan McGinnis at the top.
- 33:15Because he. Proceeded to overtake me in my
- 33:18little SQ5. He's got the boxer spider and I
- 33:22was like, I think I said to him, look, if I see you coming up
- 33:25behind me, I'll move over and he goes, don't worry, I know you
- 33:29will. But it was good to see him.
- 33:33That's a Mcginnisism. Yeah, I said to him, you'll
- 33:36never make a breakdown. So yeah.
- 33:39But we I got to the top and actually it was more of what you
- 33:42talked about, Michael. So Jay's out of town at the
- 33:45minute. He's kind of like the sheriff,
- 33:47if you will. They're worse than young idiots
- 33:51at the top in brand new GT4 RSS doing like driving excessively
- 33:57through the car park and then doing burnouts and just making
- 34:01loads of noise. So the thing I think I've
- 34:04learned from that is I had to get into the office for about
- 34:0710. So I left about 8:45, but I
- 34:11think they were pretty much gone by 8:45.
- 34:13So moving forward, I think my lesson is to get up there later.
- 34:18So as I was coming down, I saw Leave the Moon, I saw Farah
- 34:21coming up. So I think now the smart move is
- 34:24actually to go to good vibes later.
- 34:26Interesting, interesting. Well, well, well, Jay was, I, I
- 34:29know just from, from Instagram, he was at the Goonies, I think
- 34:32was, was at the 40th anniversary festival in Astoria.
- 34:35Yeah, yeah. So he was out doing important,
- 34:39important work, right? Yeah, no, it's a it's a great
- 34:42show. I saw Maurice at the Machanisma
- 34:45show. He was in good form.
- 34:47He he got to interview Bruce Meyer.
- 34:49Bruce brought his 250 shortwheel based.
- 34:52That's such a beautiful car. It's, you know, it won the
- 34:55silver. Yeah.
- 34:56It's and he was he, he was then on he brought, I think he just
- 35:02got a new Alfa Romeo classic convertible.
- 35:05So he, I spoke to him in the week and he was oh.
- 35:07Yeah, yes, he did. Yes, he.
- 35:09Did and then he drove that down and then he did part of the
- 35:12rally and I was lucky enough to get invited to the rally as
- 35:14well. I had a modern alpha, he had a
- 35:18classic alpha. But we we both met at the other
- 35:20end. Nice, awesome.
- 35:23Love Maurice. He's the real deal.
- 35:25And yeah, I just did. He's such a pro consummate
- 35:28professional, whether whether he's interviewing someone or
- 35:31emceeing. I mean, he's he's who I want to
- 35:33be when I grow up. He's a he's a great, great guy.
- 35:36He's a. Lot of times you'll get there.
- 35:41I think he's about my age. That's the problem.
- 35:43So shoot, yeah. No, it's good.
- 35:47Yeah. 80s and 90s. I got to that event as well, so
- 35:49I don't know whether it's useful to talk a little bit about that.
- 35:53So they have a new exhibit called Totally Awesome.
- 35:56It's on the ground floor of the museum, so opposite the
- 35:59Mountain's Cafe. You know, as you can imagine,
- 36:03it's everything, 80s and 90s, a massive celebration of all that
- 36:06good stuff. Stand outs for you, Ryan.
- 36:09I think probably they have got the very 1st.
- 36:13I don't have this first actual car but the first year of the AM
- 36:17GG Wagon convertible. Oh, really?
- 36:20So I saw that and saw you, Michael.
- 36:22I don't think I know you well enough.
- 36:23Was there an 80s or 90s car that really, you know, sparked you?
- 36:29I mean, I, I, the, that PPG pace core cyclone that I, I, I, I've
- 36:37had, I've had multiple cyclones and, and a typhoon that I
- 36:39recently sold. So, so I, you know, I'm very
- 36:41familiar with those cars and that particular car or that
- 36:45truck, I should say, is, is very famous within that community.
- 36:49But it's also, you know, those PPG pace cars are obviously very
- 36:54rare. They all had performance
- 36:56modifications done to them that that particular car is amazing.
- 37:02The real amazing car that fits into that vein, which I I'm kind
- 37:06of surprised that someone didn't offer them Instead is they made
- 37:10a cyclone, they made 10 cyclones that were giveaway cars from
- 37:13Marlboro when Marlboro was a big sponsor, was a big sponsor.
- 37:18You know of all the stuff in the 90s and if you smoked enough,
- 37:23there's basically a golden ticket kind of like will want
- 37:26and they they gave away they gave away 10 of them.
- 37:28They all had their if you Google them, you will see the paint job
- 37:32totally different paint jobs. They had someone cut teeth that
- 37:34they had custom made tea tops made for them.
- 37:37Larry Shinoda like the Larry Shinoda did the IS.
- 37:40This for the cigarette smoke? Yeah.
- 37:42I guess right for the cigarette had like, so basically these
- 37:44were 10 giveaway cards and they're, you know, they're still
- 37:47around. Most, most, most of them are
- 37:49still around and they bring serious, serious money.
- 37:52But the names that were evolved and again, it was ASC, the same
- 37:56company that did the other stuff.
- 37:57It was it was Marlboro, it was Larry Shinoda.
- 38:01Those are very fun and interesting, which again,
- 38:04there's ten of them in the world.
- 38:05I think even a couple of made it overseas because they were all
- 38:07giving away in America to to to cigarette smokers.
- 38:10But you know, they're just kind of like, but no, I think I think
- 38:17what the Peterson does so well and where I'm going with this is
- 38:19if they just have so much access to so much great stuff is that
- 38:23you always get surprised by something there.
- 38:25And more importantly, they're like, I credit everybody there.
- 38:29You include Dan like, like for bringing in a lot of things that
- 38:32people didn't know or maybe had forgotten about.
- 38:35And I promise you that cyclone is not something especially that
- 38:38PPG one, because it obviously was a true pace truck for the
- 38:41for the races. Like, you know, that's going to
- 38:43that that paint job alone when you guys Google it or right, if
- 38:46you Google it, like that's gonna some little kids gonna be
- 38:48impressed by that. Some kids gonna walk in there.
- 38:51Even if they don't like the car, they're gonna love the way it
- 38:53looks. And I think that's what a lot of
- 38:55these things, much like the Diablo as we started the
- 38:57conversation, that's what gets us first.
- 38:59It for, for most people that are, you know, they, they see it
- 39:02and they're like, Oh my God, you know, and I hope that that type
- 39:06of car inspires some, some young person to, you know, follow the
- 39:09rest of us into this obsession that, you know, consumes our
- 39:12waking and all of our waking hours.
- 39:15They literally have something for everyone there.
- 39:17It's a Group B rally car. Well, actually two Group B rally
- 39:20cars. 1 is a Citroen, so it's a road car.
- 39:24And then they've got the, the car that we took to the choir
- 39:28actually last year with Derfish. So the the LDS 1E2 driven by
- 39:34Anna. McClain Oh, yeah, I remember we
- 39:35saw that car, right? We saw that one at the Quail, I
- 39:38think. I know we walked by that car.
- 39:40The quail, I think it was. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 39:43yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I know someone had a little
- 39:46something to do with that. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:49I was also impressed with some of the outfits.
- 39:51Did you, were you respect resplendent in white linen
- 39:54yourself or did you dress? What was the?
- 39:57I was pretty blown away by some of the outfits.
- 39:58Yeah, I had, I had a kind of bit of a Miami Vice vibes going on
- 40:02with a white jacket and white shoes.
- 40:05And but that was all a little bit interrupted because before
- 40:08the event started I went to help out to move a Schumacher
- 40:11Ferrari. Formula One Cup.
- 40:14So I mean, the jacket was pants pushing this damn thing.
- 40:19So yeah, it was it was less Miami Vice and I guess more
- 40:23Miami Grand Prix. It's humid in Miami.
- 40:27Right yeah it'll sweat yeah OK and the brown but it's it's open
- 40:30now it made. It authentic.
- 40:33Yeah. It's made it authentic, right?
- 40:35You were true, true Miami style. Yeah, but they have got the
- 40:38Daytona from Miami Vice in there.
- 40:40So the story behind that is that there's this fake detainer, it's
- 40:45a Corvette with a Daytona body on top.
- 40:47The 1st, at least the first season of Miami Vice.
- 40:50That's what they were driving around in.
- 40:52Ferrari tried to sue and said cease and desist or we'll sue
- 40:56you. They got into conversations and
- 40:59then Ferrari kind of changed their tune and gave them to
- 41:03Ferrari testaroses in white. So but that.
- 41:06That's the story, yeah, OK. Well, do you mind if I put a
- 41:09little, little more color on that?
- 41:11Yeah. So that so Michael Mann, the
- 41:14great writer director who who created my advice, you know, got
- 41:18that cease and assistant. And and because that's when,
- 41:21especially in that time, there were a lot of replicas being
- 41:24made and obviously far I couldn't do it when they made
- 41:27that deal for the white testaroses, Ferrari said that
- 41:31they had to blow up the car. So in the season finale of it is
- 41:35season 1, maybe season 2. I it's been a while, but
- 41:38whatever the season finale is before the switchover happens.
- 41:41Yeah, they blow up that car. Wow.
- 41:43Specifically to satisfy. Oh no.
- 41:46Kidding. Yeah, They're they.
- 41:47They said you need to. You need.
- 41:49I don't know if they were looking.
- 41:50I can't speak to whether or not they were looking for it to
- 41:52actually be done on screen, but they wanted the car destroyed,
- 41:54basically. Yeah, because they didn't want,
- 41:56you know, a faint now that the show was becoming famous, they
- 41:59didn't want that car to get passed around and inspire other
- 42:02people to, like, chop up or make replicas.
- 42:04So they asked for that car to be destroyed, maybe the stories
- 42:08that needed to be destroyed. So what, they did it and
- 42:10typical, you know, kind of grandeur of Hollywood, they
- 42:12literally, they actually blow up that car whenever the season
- 42:15finale is before the switchover. And they destroyed it per the
- 42:19request of Ferrari. Yeah, wow.
- 42:22Love it. It's funny because there's also
- 42:23the fake Ferris Bueller tar there and.
- 42:29Yeah. What didn't this thing have?
- 42:31What? What doesn't this exhibit have?
- 42:33It's got everything. It's got anything clarin F1?
- 42:35Yeah, yeah, I. Mean, you know.
- 42:37You can stand and look at the McLaren F1 for hours.
- 42:40Oh. My God.
- 42:41Oh my God. It's not about details.
- 42:43Yeah, I was talking to Justin Bell about it because he
- 42:46obviously raced one in period. And I was like, you know, did
- 42:49you, did they give you 1? And he's like, no, he was racing
- 42:53for the owner of parents and the owner of Harrods would lend him.
- 42:59He had one, I had a road version.
- 43:01So he got to borrow one a few times, but didn't get to kind of
- 43:04given one. But yeah, there's there's also
- 43:07the low tech, which is a Mercedes.
- 43:09It's almost like the the prototype that was going to be a
- 43:12competitor to the McLaren F1 didn't make it as a car because
- 43:16they obviously then went to the the CLK platform.
- 43:20Right. Right.
- 43:22Yeah, that was a. Double last year too.
- 43:24Yes, yeah, Great exhibit, lots of great cars.
- 43:28If you're going to like, go have a look.
- 43:31Yeah, looks amazing. Look like a hell of a party.
- 43:33It hurt to miss it, but can't do everything.
- 43:36Next time. Yeah, eventually I'm just going
- 43:38to join you 2 in LA. Yeah, just come on out for a
- 43:41long weekend. You got to make it.
- 43:43You got. To come by for.
- 43:45Good vibes, right, yeah, see what your wife and daughter how
- 43:49they do about that. But you real quickly.
- 43:51I just lastly on on what yeah, go ahead.
- 43:53It's the 80s and 90s. I think to your point, how we
- 43:56started this with your comment about the Subaru, that stuff not
- 43:59only was fast then it felt fast and it did all those things like
- 44:02the Janetta V16, like there's all these interesting cars.
- 44:05These are all the progenitors to the, to what we see now.
- 44:08And it's so common and, and, and the horsepower numbers now with
- 44:11the new ZR1 with over 1000 horsepower, like this is really
- 44:15where it started because in the 70s and early mid 80s that I
- 44:19mean, by large, that was dead right.
- 44:21And so you had these people doing these things that I would
- 44:24argue inspired the people that are now making the things that
- 44:26we lust after or more importantly, the the next
- 44:29generation lust after. And thank goodness that there
- 44:33was the ability to do what's in that at that time, because it'd
- 44:36be hard to replicate that level of, of volume in these different
- 44:39types of cars today. They got in that late 80s, early
- 44:4390s, and obviously into the early 2000s time frame that
- 44:46people were doing that because you could argue there's not a
- 44:49Hellcat without people doing the crazy stuff they did in the 80s.
- 44:52Not just prove a business case, but it inspires somebody to the
- 44:57the, you know, all the people that did a lot of these more
- 45:00modern supercars or, or the revival cars, if you will, like
- 45:03the Challengers and the Mustangs and the, you know, I'll reboot
- 45:06like that started then. And if that hadn't happened, I
- 45:09think people underestimate as crappy of cars as they may have
- 45:12been. Like your point about we've
- 45:13joked about the Diablo. It's a great car that inspired
- 45:17the stuff that now people either take for granted or or get a
- 45:20chance to experience today. And I'm happy that happened,
- 45:23because if not, it would look vastly different than what we
- 45:25came out of the 70s and early 80s with.
- 45:30For the record, I love the Diablo, right?
- 45:32I just right. No, no, I know it's an amazing
- 45:35thing. But.
- 45:36We've gotten better with how we put cars together.
- 45:39Think. About different.
- 45:42No, I think, I think about, I know I'm the oldest one in this
- 45:45group, but we're all roughly, you know, we, we could have all
- 45:47gone to high school together, right?
- 45:49We are unique in our generation. We've seen from like literally
- 45:52the worst cars ever made to some of the best cars ever made,
- 45:55right? Talk about a golden age of cars
- 45:59to grow up and grow old with, right?
- 46:01I mean, when we were born, you know, mid late 70s, right, cars
- 46:06were as bad as they ever were. You know, I mean, I grew up with
- 46:09these diesel Volkswagens. I mean, there, there were these,
- 46:12you know, anemic, you know, 110 horsepower American V eights on
- 46:15the road. I mean, these were just the
- 46:17Malaysia. It's literally called the
- 46:18Malaysia. That's what we were born into,
- 46:20right? And, and, and look at us now.
- 46:23It's it's, it's, it's wild. Everything old.
- 46:26Everything old is new again because we used to make fun of
- 46:28Yugos, right? And now, I don't know if you
- 46:31caught wind, you know, Hugo's coming back so.
- 46:35You know, it looks pretty good. Yeah, I mean, I think it's AII
- 46:39mean, I, I mean, I obviously I haven't physically seen one yet,
- 46:42but but the joy of it is, is I think maybe the lesson here is
- 46:44life is cyclical, right? You know, you had the the post
- 46:47war stuff when everybody was hot rodding and that was the
- 46:49inspiration for the 60s muscle car air and the the the turbine
- 46:53cars and all the different, you know, the the Motorama stuff in
- 46:56the 40s and, you know, the 40s, fifties and 60s.
- 46:59And then to your point, Ryan, then it dips down to the 70s and
- 47:0280s and then we come back up and then we come down and like, so I
- 47:04mean, it's all just one big ride, but the the rides been
- 47:07good. Rides been good the last 25
- 47:09years, 30 years it's been real good.
- 47:11Super lucky on me. I'm excited to see what's what
- 47:16the future is and, and I'm not an anti EV person, but there has
- 47:19to be that, that, that splitting this, you know, kind of that,
- 47:22that bifurcation or that what I'm trying to say, like you have
- 47:25to come together between the, the the future and the past.
- 47:28And it'll be curious to see who figures that out, you know,
- 47:32whether it's a mild hybrid or a partial hybrid.
- 47:35But you know, to your point about the Chargers, it I've in
- 47:38LA, I've only seen one now of the new charges, whereas I've
- 47:42seen pretty much, I mean, I'm expecting to see a GTD before I
- 47:45see another charger. You know what I mean?
- 47:47Like I just have, it's the, the take, the take rate in LA is, I
- 47:50don't want to say indicative of the country, but that just
- 47:52because there's so big and so many people, you can, you tend
- 47:54to see a lot of everything or the 1st of things.
- 47:57And I've only seen one charger. So I'm not saying that that's
- 47:59the bad core, not the future, but it's, it's different.
- 48:02It's different now. I.
- 48:03Don't know if this is inside baseball, but talking to the
- 48:05folks, Ragwood, if you bought the Charger, you get a three
- 48:09days course at the at the school, yeah.
- 48:12You can still get into trouble in one of those for.
- 48:15Sure, yeah, 600 horsepower is 600 horsepower, isn't it?
- 48:19I would say they started one up while I was there and it was
- 48:22quite funny because it makes this raw, but obviously there's
- 48:26no engine, so it's it's just a complete fake raw.
- 48:31But at least they're trying. Yeah, it's A and it's a, it's a
- 48:36good looking thing, right? You know, it's, it's, it's got
- 48:40some, some neat lines and cutouts and you know, I mean,
- 48:43it's just, it's, I mean it's, it's, it's just not.
- 48:48I'm developing a new category of car, so the category is called
- 48:54All Things Are Forgiven, so there's two nominations so far.
- 48:59The first nomination is the Lexus LC500 convertible.
- 49:04It's a car that's too heavy. The to get to any of the the
- 49:08details in the screen, you have to dig down lots of menus.
- 49:11But that VA is pretty pucker. Pretty pucker.
- 49:15The second car, Yeah, it looks good, right?
- 49:19So beautiful. The second car is I had the
- 49:22Stelvio Quadrifolio last Sunday for the day.
- 49:26They gave it to me for the day. Press car, you get in that car
- 49:30and there is no way to work out how to use the interface.
- 49:33You tap the user interface and it doesn't respond.
- 49:36So this thing is like a premium Stellantis products.
- 49:40You tap it, you can't get the screen to work.
- 49:43As soon as you drive that thing, there is no way it's to drive as
- 49:47well as it does. So all things have been given on
- 49:50that car because because it's just it.
- 49:53I was driving my Audi up, good vibes, and my car felt heavy in
- 49:57the corners. You drive, obviously it's a line
- 50:00of car that's still vehicle to folio, but it's an SUV.
- 50:03It doesn't feel like an SUV. It goes like dillio.
- 50:06Yeah, all sins are forgiven. What's that phrase it goes like?
- 50:10Bilio, Bilio, it goes like Bilio.
- 50:14There's AT, there's our first T-shirt, right?
- 50:18Perfect, of course. I think Billy Ocean, get into my
- 50:22car, get out of my dreams. What was it?
- 50:24But it probably has nothing to do with anything.
- 50:26But that's where my mind. Have either of you driven any?
- 50:29Old child of the 80s. Yeah, You know, you go first,
- 50:34Michael, because I feel like you've driven some esoteric
- 50:37stuff. Yeah, it's, I think it comes,
- 50:40I'm gonna, I'm gonna stand by and I know I'm slightly dodging
- 50:43the question, but it it's it's use case, right.
- 50:45To your point, Dan, just now that SUV, your SUV and that SUV
- 50:50in the canyons, the use case for that is there.
- 50:53So then that becomes something that makes that car forgivable.
- 50:57Whereas if you're lugging around in traffic or you know, you have
- 51:00we, we have heard or I have experienced, you know, of, of,
- 51:03you know, electrical issues with alphas, late model alphas, you
- 51:06know, all the other sins that on a livable days, day-to-day
- 51:09basis, maybe you can't forgive it.
- 51:11But on a use case, that's a great car.
- 51:14So maybe the maybe it's like, is there a great use case for the
- 51:17car? And so I don't know.
- 51:21I, I, I'm grateful to get to experience some of the things
- 51:25that I've gotten to experience. And, and it's just, you love
- 51:28them for what they are. And I try not to not love them
- 51:31for what they're not. So I know I dodged the question
- 51:33because I can't think of anything that's either
- 51:35impressive or, or fancy, but, or even just fun.
- 51:38But like they're all, they can all be fun in their own way.
- 51:41I mean, going ironically, going back to the you go, the you go
- 51:44was a great around town car because I worked at a tire store
- 51:47for for three years in college. And like we had we literally had
- 51:51AU go as a parts runner and that thing like you could you could
- 51:54park it practically on the sidewalk because it was so
- 51:56small. You know, you filled it up with
- 51:58gas once a month, but it could do 65 on the highway.
- 52:01But you know, you're running around parts around.
- 52:03I wasn't Boulder, but like you're running around Boulder.
- 52:05So you're not really, you're not.
- 52:06You don't really need to do 85 so.
- 52:08Yeah, yeah. That kind of car, like for a
- 52:11piece of garbage that it was that we had everything taped up
- 52:14and you know, you had to use a bungee to keep the door closed.
- 52:18It was a really good car. So I kind of feel like in that
- 52:20case that car worked out really great.
- 52:21So that's my that's that's my sins are forgiven car as an
- 52:25early yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:29I don't know they have a particular model, but I'll, I'll
- 52:32give credit, you know, to anything that takes a risk,
- 52:34right? That isn't just, you know,
- 52:35committee down to nothing, right.
- 52:37And maybe that's where the alpha comes in, something like the
- 52:39alpha, right? I mentioned the, the Lotus
- 52:43Elise. I know the car is 20 years old,
- 52:44not hard to believe, but that car just was so good at its
- 52:48mission that you didn't care that it barely fits you.
- 52:50You didn't care that the stereo sucked.
- 52:52You didn't care that, you know, if you, if you crashed the, the,
- 52:56the front, they called the clam or whatever in the front, then
- 52:58the car was worthless, right? You know it clamshell, right?
- 53:03You know, it's just, but damn it, if that car wasn't amazing
- 53:06right now, if I'd gotten one now, maybe I think it was slow,
- 53:09whatever. But I mean, anything that just
- 53:11says, you know what, I'm just going to, you know, let my freak
- 53:14flag fly and just sort of be my own thing.
- 53:16That's why I love Alpha, right? That's why I still love Lotus,
- 53:20right? I just, you know, the, the, the,
- 53:23the sorts of of companies are few and far between anymore,
- 53:26right? Lexus.
- 53:27I mean, you know that Lexus isn't isn't making, you know,
- 53:30Lexus money, right? You know, but they're doing it
- 53:34right. You know how many cars have a
- 53:35big V8 like that? It's a you can get it as a
- 53:37convertible. I mean, that's it's I don't
- 53:40know, we need cars like that. We need more of that stuff, so.
- 53:47Anything else from you gentlemen?
- 53:48What else did we? God, I got to give a shout out.
- 53:53OK, so Michael, you grew up in Denver, right?
- 53:58I think a lot of our listenership is in Denver.
- 53:59If you are in Denver or the the Front Range of the Denver metro,
- 54:02you need a hair cut by a car enthusiast who if you want to
- 54:07get your hair cut in an actual garage with a vintage alpha
- 54:10Julio next to you, check out Tuna's garage and Instagram Ryan
- 54:15Lowry. He cut my hair looks that right,
- 54:17right. What littles left the other day
- 54:20and we had a lot of fun talking about cars and everything else,
- 54:22but where else can you can you have that experience, right?
- 54:24You're literally sitting next to an alpha, right?
- 54:26So if you are in Denver. Ryan Lowry, Yeah, very good,
- 54:30Very good. But I think we're probably a
- 54:32show on We Gentlemen. You guys definitely knuckle me.
- 54:38That's for. Sure.
- 54:38No, we need to hear you say off for a.
- 54:40While. We we have a phrase at the end
- 54:43of every show, so I know. Do you know what it is, Michael,
- 54:46or do we need to do? You know it.
- 54:47I've, I've heard you guys do it. Yeah, but but I am not, I'm not
- 54:50a yeah, I'm, I'm not a full member of the team yet.
- 54:53So I that'll be my initiation. Once Lindsay is here, we can do
- 54:56it all together. Always be driving.
