- 0:07The Pittsburgh Pirates faced the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field for a Friday afternoon game on May 27, 1977,
- 0:14in which both teams were entering the game in an early season fight for first place in the NL East.
- 0:19The Pirates were managed by Chuck Tanner in his first season as manager after replacing Danny Murtaugh.
- 0:24The Pirates made it to the NLCS in 1974 and 75, but finished in second place behind the Phillies in 1976.
- 0:31In this game they were sending John Candelaria to the mound, who was off to a hot start with a 6-0 record
- 0:36and a 1.63 ERA, which included four starts in which he didn't give up and earn run.
- 0:41The Chicago Cubs were looking to finish above 500 for the first time in five years under new manager Herman Franks.
- 0:47This audio recording is from the Chicago Radio broadcast featuring announcers Levin Sloyd and Lou Boudreaux.
- 1:17...and he was last year.
- 1:20Grammarly, Candelaria throws a fastball and a curve.
- 1:26He told me before the game, he says, no, he says, I haven't developed a change yet.
- 1:29Stepping in, Yvonne DeJesus takes the fastball a little high to the right end of her ball one.
- 1:34DeJesus batting 3-0-8 starting this series.
- 1:38One homer, 16 runs batted in.
- 1:42Wind up by the big south ball, here's the pitch.
- 1:45Curve ball in for a strike, took a little bit off of it.
- 1:47Enid Sloyd coaching a third and Alvin Duck in the coach's box at first.
- 1:51Duffy Dyer the catcher.
- 1:54Well he's started to have a big guy at first base.
- 1:56Here's the wind up by Candelaria.
- 1:58Misses outside with a curve ball.
- 2:01Ball two, strike one.
- 2:03Reddy Stenit playing just about up the middle to second.
- 2:06Deep at shortstop is Frankie Tabaris, the third baseman, Phil Garner.
- 2:10They have played for the A's.
- 2:12We're a multitude of players.
- 2:15Even at third, here's the wind up.
- 2:16Fastball, Yvonne takes a cut at it.
- 2:18Fouls it back out of play.
- 2:23No score, bottom of the first inning.
- 2:24Baseball between these two clubs out here in Great Big Field again tomorrow.
- 2:28And on Sunday, and that closes out the homestand, we'll be on down at St. Louis Monday afternoon.
- 2:38Candelaria ready.
- 2:392-2 pitch.
- 2:40Ball, the A's takes a cut at it, fouls it, and it's back out of play.
- 2:46In the on deck circle, Gene Clines.
- 2:49Last year, in two games against the Cubs, Candelaria had one win, no losses.
- 2:57They allowed only two earned runs in 18 innings against the Cubs a year ago.
- 3:01Here's the swing and the drive in the right field.
- 3:03It is wrapping in there for a base hit.
- 3:07That's the first hit of the afternoon.
- 3:11Dave Parker, a big guy, came in.
- 3:13He couldn't quite get to it in time.
- 3:15Tricking Texas League single to the opposite side.
- 3:20Here's Gene Clines, who you know as the adrenaline pumping against the ball club that turned him a couple of years ago to the Texas Rangers.
- 3:30Clines with 16 hits and 41 at bat, steps in, hitting 390.
- 3:35Couple of homers, 18 runs by the end.
- 3:39Stardull is not holding DeJesus on.
- 3:42He is even with the back, but he's at least 10 feet off of it.
- 3:46First pitch with a slow curve, and Clines takes first strike.
- 3:56Runner-on at first base with nobody out at no score.
- 3:59Candyman is ready.
- 4:01Long look at first here as the pitch swung on.
- 4:04Time, left field, but it's going to be caught by Oliver.
- 4:07He comes over about 45 feet inside to left field line, hustles to throw into second base, and Clines is out of there.
- 4:16Got around on it very well, but he couldn't get it out of here.
- 4:19We've got a breeze blowing in here today.
- 4:24That'll bring up Larry Bittner, left hander, hitting 315 for the year with a couple of homers, 21 runs about it in.
- 4:33You know, the Cubs come in here today with a team batting average of 282.
- 4:37That is the second best in the National League.
- 4:40Only the Los Angeles Dodgers have a higher team batting average than do the Cubs, 282.
- 4:48But against a guy like this, it can be awfully tough to get hits.
- 4:51He lobs a toss over to first base.
- 4:54DeJesus back in plenty of time.
- 4:57Candelaria's earned run average is the best in the National League right now among the starting pitchers.
- 5:04Here's the delivery. Call for a pitch out, runner not going, ball one.
- 5:09Excuse me, this is a very unusual setup for starters.
- 5:13Playing in front of the runner, not behind him.
- 5:16And every pitch that Candelaria has thrown, he breaks towards first base to bring DeJesus back.
- 5:23Here he goes. Here's the pitch. Here's Dyers throw to second. He is in there with a stolen base.
- 5:29With a slow curveball for a strike call.
- 5:33But he got a great jump on it.
- 5:35That's one of the risks you take when they first baseman play.
- 5:39The way Starjolt has played against DeJesus here.
- 5:43So the Pirates, who are leading the league in stolen bases, have just had one done against him.
- 5:52Steve on to Hayes.
- 5:54As his ninth of the year, been caught five times.
- 5:59Runner in scoring position, bottom of the first inning, an account of one and one on Larry Bittner.
- 6:05The kick to pitch, fastball. Strike call on the outside corner.
- 6:09Bittner not too happy with Doug Harvey's judgment on that one.
- 6:16The cup opposition, by the way, mentioning that team batting average.
- 6:20Two eighty-two, the opposition against cup pitching is hitting two fifty-nine.
- 6:28One-two delivery coming up. Here it is.
- 6:31Swung on a high flyball to Parker and going out instead at the second baseman.
- 6:35It's Renny Stett at whooping the throw into second and he almost got a double play.
- 6:40Pretty nice work.
- 6:44Shortstop, Frankie Taveras taking that throw instead at what way after,
- 6:48about ninety-five feet or so in the outfield grass.
- 6:51To make that catch, he was just about facing the infield before he got rid of it in a hurry.
- 6:57That would have been some double play.
- 7:04Now Bobby Mercer stepping in.
- 7:06Batting two eighty-six.
- 7:09Six overs for this left-hander.
- 7:11Twenty-nine runs about it in.
- 7:18Right side of that infield is deep.
- 7:20Gandoleri is pitched to him and he takes the strike.
- 7:23Our broadcast authorized under right spread over the Chicago National League Ball Club,
- 7:27which has the right of approval of the announcers for this event.
- 7:29It's solely for the entertainment of our audience.
- 7:31Any publication, rebroadcast, or other use of the descriptions and accounts of the game
- 7:35without the express written permission of the Chicago National League Ball Club is prohibited.
- 7:39Fastball.
- 7:41Mercer looks at strike two.
- 7:43Good fastball.
- 7:47Gandoleri is listed weight now, two twenty.
- 7:50With that six feet seven inches of height, he looks like he's probably more at about two thirty.
- 7:56Just twenty-three years of age.
- 7:59Taking his eighth start.
- 8:02He hasn't completed the game, but he has gone eight and two-thirds innings.
- 8:05So to pitch, fastball, swung out and it missed.
- 8:08Blew it by Rodney's eye.
- 8:11Gandoleri, with a strikeout against Bobby Mercer and three pitches,
- 8:16puts the Cubs down with no runs, one hit, one man left.
- 8:20At the end of one, the Pirates will have Cal Oliver, Willie Stardale, and Renny Stinnett against Bill Bottom.
- 8:26No score.

- 9:37Al Oliver, another left-hander.
- 9:40They have three left-handers in a row, and that's why not with Parker, Oliver, and Starko.
- 9:45And of course, the lead-off man, Marino, is a left-hander.
- 9:49This would be a good time to have a left-hander in your starting rotation, wouldn't it?
- 9:53Oliver, the veteran, hitting 311.
- 9:56He swings, bounces one through the right side, a face hit.
- 9:59Went after the first pitch by bottom and is on.
- 10:03The high-bouncing single through the right side.
- 10:10Willie Stodgill stepping in, veteran, hitting 306.
- 10:14Seven home runs, 16 runs batted in.
- 10:18As a team, the Pirates with 35 home runs this year.
- 10:21Five more than the Cubs.
- 10:26Starko twirling the bat as usual like a toothpick.
- 10:29A throw to first base, Bittner standing on the back to hold Oliver on.
- 10:33While he has good speed, he has not been too successful in stone of bases this year.
- 10:38He has five, but he's been thrown out seven times.
- 10:42The two key men, Marino, the lead-off man, and Taveras, who batted second, as far as stone of bases are concerned.
- 10:51Here's a stretch to the pitch of fastballs.
- 10:53Stodgill takes it to strike.
- 10:55Willie with 395 home runs in his career.
- 11:0018th in the all-time Major League home run list.
- 11:04Four behind the retired Al Kaelin of the Detroit Tigers.
- 11:09He's at a bundle of them right here.
- 11:15Bottom of the stretch, a swing and a drive.
- 11:18In a deep left-center field, Morales on the run.
- 11:20He is there.
- 11:22Fine running catch by Jerry Morales in deep left-center field.
- 11:27Boy, with that left of that, it looks like it's going to be in there for extra bases.
- 11:31And Morales getting a great jump on the run.
- 11:34Steps the glove up high over his head.
- 11:36All that in, and Oliver has to get back to first base, a beautiful play.
- 11:41You know, Vincent, talking to Alvin Darn, he was amazed and surprised at the jump that Morales gets in center field on the ball off of the bat.
- 11:51He didn't realize that he could play center field that well, and only because he gets that great jump on the ball can he do the job, and he's been doing the job.
- 12:00He sure did it there.
- 12:02Here is Rennie Stenett, with bottom, finally gets to look at another right-handed hitter, second one in their lineup.
- 12:09Stenett hitting 290.
- 12:11One homer, 14 runs by the dip.
- 12:15Here's the pitch, swung on.
- 12:17He hits a little Texas Linger.
- 12:19It's going to drop into right field.
- 12:20Here's Oliver going around.
- 12:22Now he's way to third.
- 12:23Mercer's throw.
- 12:24He's wide.
- 12:25He is safe with third base.
- 12:29Well, he may not have a great stonemase record this year.
- 12:32Oliver did an excellent job on that one, as the ball jammed.
- 12:37Rennie Stenett, but he managed to hit a little looper that was out of the reach of Manny Treo, and in too close, of course, for Bobby Mercer to get to it.
- 12:49And Oliver, with excellent judgment, able to go from first to third.
- 12:54Goal was one out, Phil Garner, and they gave up a bundle for it to the Oakland A's, including one of the leading hitters in the Major League.
- 13:03Mr. Page steps in, Garner a right-hander, playing at third base, replacing Richie Hebner.
- 13:10Runners at first and third go to first.
- 13:14And Stenett, who has 12 out of 17 total bases this year, is driven back by that throw by bottom.
- 13:20He may go at any time.
- 13:25There he goes.
- 13:26Here's a swing, face it, right past bottom, into center field.
- 13:29The Pirates on the board, they lead one and nothing.
- 13:32Phil Garner, going after the first pitch, drilled it sharply back up the middle.
- 13:37It just barely eluded the attempt of Phil Bottom to make the catch on it.
- 13:42And once it did that, it was by it.
- 13:44It was on his left side. I thought he might be able to get it.
- 13:52Garner has just batted in his 14th run of the year, the third hit of the year.
- 13:58And that brings up a hot-hitting catcher, Duffy Dyer, built above like a fire plug.
- 14:03And this guy is hitting 325.
- 14:08There goes the runner at first, and he's swinging at us, what they hit front on that time.
- 14:13He fouled it, grab, sorry, I said it missed, he fouled it back out of play.
- 14:17They just run constantly.
- 14:22Dyer, in his last ten ball games, 11 for 27, he's hitting over 400 over that span of ten games.
- 14:31There's a couple of homers, ten runs batted in.
- 14:34Squared away stance, a throw to first.
- 14:37There goes him, bothered attack, steady dude, went back in there, hit first.
- 14:43Time call so he can dust off that light yellow set of pants that he's wearing.
- 14:51Boy, these are some uniforms, one of about a half a dozen sets they've got.
- 14:55He's got a big lead at first base.
- 14:58All one delivery.
- 15:00Fakes going and a pitch out, no play, and he got back. All one strike one.
- 15:07He'll be going this time.
- 15:14Still at 112, still the bases of the year.
- 15:20But he got that souvenir foul ball out of the net, and a round of applause from the appreciative crowd there.
- 15:27He still has a good lead at first. Bottom of left to check him.
- 15:31He fakes a throw to third, hoping to get the runner at first base, didn't go in, but he was not.
- 15:38While he faked a throw to third, he turned, faked one to first base, held onto the ball because he saw,
- 15:43that stent had gotten back in.
- 15:46He steps off the rubber, that stent again, scampers back to first base.
- 15:51Third joiner, I'm sorry.
- 15:54Fakes going and a pitch of the ball too low, ball too strike one.
- 15:59Stent it over at third. Bill Garner with a solid base hit up the middle, not at first.
- 16:09Duffy Dyer, the hitter, with one out in the top of the second inning, one to nothing pitch first.
- 16:15Stretched by bottom, and another pitch out and Garner not going.
- 16:28He is three for two.
- 16:31Three stolen bases and have been caught twice.
- 16:37They like to double steal also.
- 16:40Three one pitch he goes, there's a swing and a high fouled on the right field line, the wind pushing it into the box,
- 16:46he's out of play.
- 16:48Hit through on that side, ball three, strike two.
- 17:01Got a group here from Illinois State University.
- 17:08Give us the last name, Karen, Carol, Jill, Shelby, Teresa, Les.
- 17:13One of them says, would you please say hi to my dad at Costco, he listens at work every day.
- 17:20Maybe dad knows which one is his daughter.
- 17:25Three two delivery instead, bottom started to throw to third base.
- 17:31No play there with Randy Stentadon.
- 17:37Dyer been a good hitter for them.
- 17:40Now the stretch runner goes, here's a fastball taken for a strike, a throw to second, he slides, he's out.
- 17:45A double play to retire this side.
- 17:49They ran themselves right out of that second inning.
- 17:55Like on Duffy Dyer, perfect strike by Mitterwald, Janelle Garner at second base.
- 18:05And a double play, the 36th of the year by the Chicago Cubs.
- 18:09And the Pirates in the second inning come up with one run, three base hits, one man left in the bases.
- 18:17So at the end of one and a half, the Cubs come to bat with Pittsburgh leading one to nothing.
- 18:24Hello, General Finance friendly Bob Adams speaking.
- 18:28Dorothy Corbett here, Bob. You've seen me in the office with Mr. Corbett?
- 18:31Yes, Mrs. Corbett.
- 18:32Before I get the loan I have to ask, do you think I look better in fuchsia or apple green?
- 18:36Well, I'm not too good at women's.
- 18:38How about orange?
- 18:39Orange is nice.
- 18:40Because they do have something in orange that's just darling.
- 18:42Sounds pretty.
- 18:43Maybe the green's more practical. What do you think, Bob?
- 18:45Well, what color shoes do you want?
- 18:47That's the point, it goes with my shoes. It goes with everything. See, you do know about these things.
- 18:52Well, hell, that's the one, then.
- 18:54Only thing is, Bob, it has a little dent.
- 18:56A dent?
- 18:57On the other hand, it's only three years old.
- 18:59You're buying a three-year-old dented dress?
- 19:01I'm talking about a car, Bob. The loan is for a used car.
- 19:04A car? See, I...
- 19:05I mean, I should get something I look good in. Don't you agree?
- 19:08Oh, yes. Might as well, sure.
- 19:09See, you do know about these things. Oh, thanks for the help, Bob.
- 19:13It's all right. You can always get a little help from a friend at General Finance.
- 19:18Over 65 General Finance offices in the Chicago land area to borrow up to $10,000.
- 19:25Just call and over 32020. Also, an office in McHenry.
- 19:34There's a...
- 19:36...ditch sheet that's been made into a sign, and the bleacher fans out in right field are hanging it right up over the 368-foot mark.
- 19:44Somebody may be requesting to pull it back in.
- 19:48It's the 1st Naperville, Somp, Ditch Club, and it says, Go Cubs.
- 19:56Red just saw it. They pulled it back over the wall.
- 20:00As long as they just display it between innings, of course, no problem.
- 20:06Don Candelaria pitched out of a mild little jam in the first inning, and he blew three fastballs by Bobby Mercer.
- 20:15Now faces Jerry Morales, who's made a very fine catch already in the ballgame.
- 20:20In the first pitch, the cut right-hander's the ball.
- 20:22Jerry hitting 269. Three homers, 24 runs, batted in. Here's the lineup.
- 20:28Fastball up to the line, ball two.
- 20:35Candelaria is the fellow who threw that no-hitter last August against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 20:42He's just 23 years of age. Here's a swing and a high foul down the left-field line out of play.
- 20:50Could have a brilliant future. He has excellent control.
- 20:54That, of course, is unusual for such a young pitcher.
- 21:01I almost did, especially for a softball. Two-one pitch. Breaking ball.
- 21:06Hit misses outside, three and one. He has only walked nine minutes this year in almost 52 innings.
- 21:18Three-one delivery. Fastball. He misses outside.
- 21:22Well, did I put the X on him by talking about his great control?
- 21:28Didn't try to, but it's all right if we did.
- 21:30That's the first walk. The Alvindar going over to talk to Morales.
- 21:37Candelaria with his move makes it off like that.
- 21:41Now, Starker is going over to talk to him to be sure they understand how Starker is going to be playing with the man on his first base.
- 21:49De Asus was successful with a steal in the first inning when Starker was playing off the back, and he's doing it now.
- 22:00Grillo stepping in and he takes the first pitch of strike at the knee.
- 22:04Starker was playing just in front of the baseline, and he's about eight, nine feet off the back at first.
- 22:13Most unusual position.
- 22:15Edges back a little bit as Candelaria steps, throws, and the pitches foul back out of play, strike two on Grillo.
- 22:23Manning hitting 360 for the year.
- 22:27Second today, Parker, the pirate, starting this series in the National League of Hitting.
- 22:33Three home runs for Grillo. 17 runs, about it is.
- 22:37Stretch the pitch. Fastball. He throws his bat at it. Fouls it out of play way down the right field side.
- 22:44Nothing and two on the Cubs' second baseman.
- 22:48The bleachers are jammed. They're standing out there.
- 22:54About all the guys are stripped to the waist.
- 23:00Here's the pitch. Swung on a high fly ball into left center field. Oliver on the run. He's going to get there. He does.
- 23:06Makes the one-handed catch, and Morales will scamper back to first basers one away in the bottom of the second inning.
- 23:15That brings to bat Steve Onoveros.
- 23:18He was telling me down around the batting cage today, he said, I don't know, he said, I just don't feel quite right. He said, I've got kind of a headache.
- 23:27Well, I know some ballplayers come to the ballpark not feeling too great like Kruko yesterday.
- 23:33He's going to wind up with a super day. Maybe it'll be that way for Onoveros today.
- 23:37He could have had it right-handed against Candeleria. Here's the pitch.
- 23:41And he takes a strike. Took a little bit off of that one. Came in on the outside corner. Steve hitting 322.
- 23:47Couple of homers, 18 runs, about it in for the year.
- 23:53That ball is ready. Here's the pitch. Swung on. He goes after a fastball just above the knees and fouls it sharply into the seats in the first base side.
- 24:02It's nothing in two.
- 24:05This is the only daytime action in the major leagues. Everybody else, way under the arch tonight.
- 24:13Boy, what a beautiful day for a ballgame.
- 24:17And a big series for both teams.
- 24:200-2 delivery instead, a lot of the toss to Starkham.
- 24:24Scampered back to first base and it was just a toss, not a good pickoff throw.
- 24:30Reno playing over in the left center.
- 24:34Candeleria ready. 0-2 delivery, fastball, and he wasted away. Ball one, strike two.
- 24:40George Winterwald in the on-deck circle.
- 24:43Tomorrow, Rick Rushell.
- 24:46Jim Rooker, the probable starting pitcher's big honor day.
- 24:52Sajil gets back to first base. Candeleria again gives a little toss over there.
- 24:59But most of the time, Sajil is playing way off the bag and now he gets even farther off the bag at first.
- 25:05Now he edges back, another step for Sajil.
- 25:11Creeps back over again. Here's the pitch. Very high. Ball two, strike two. Let's pause for station identification.
- 25:16This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 25:19This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 25:28One gone, Pittsburgh leading 1-0.
- 25:31Bottom of the second inning.
- 25:33Candeleria into the stretch, steps and throws again to first base, and he again just lobs it over there.
- 25:39Sajil goes back rather slowly.
- 25:47Again the stretch by the left-hander. Here's the pitch.
- 25:50Out of airs, piles the fastball down the right field side out of play.
- 25:54Ball two, strike two.
- 25:56It's 68 degrees here at the ballpark.
- 26:00Out of Midway Airport at game time. It was 13 degrees warmer, 81 out there.
- 26:06And we got the breeze coming in off the lake again at about 16 miles per hour.
- 26:12Due to pitch, swung out of it.
- 26:15Got him with a fastball down around his knees on the inside corner.
- 26:19His second strike out of the ballgame. His 30th of the year.
- 26:26That brings to bat George Middowall.
- 26:29But Morales still out at first base.
- 26:32Leadoff hitter in the first inning to Jesus Singles stole second.
- 26:36That's as far as he got.
- 26:38Now Morales throwing a walk to lead off this inning and they're two away.
- 26:42Middowall takes the strike.
- 26:47They got three hits in the top of the inning, which was ended with a double play on a steal attempt as the batter took strike three.
- 26:55Middowall making a perfect take. Did a ace to get him at second base.
- 26:59There's a strike call. He's looked at two beauties.
- 27:03Candelaria has got big George in the hole, nothing in two.
- 27:08Middowall with four homers this year, driven in 15 runs, and he's maintaining a 279 batting average.
- 27:16The 0-2 delivery. Runner goes, he swings and fouls a fastball back out of play.
- 27:21Nothing in two.
- 27:23Wendy's baseball team, 10 members of them out here today with Coach Darryl Brazel.
- 27:29The backers of that team include Mr. Young, Mr. Lloyd, Mr. Hobbs.
- 27:34All working hard to help the youth on the west side of Chicago.
- 27:40They come out here just about every day.
- 27:47Expect great turnouts here tomorrow and Sunday.
- 27:50Sunday, of course, is going to be men's sport ad day.
- 27:53Extra inducement to come on out.
- 27:56Then part of your Memorial Day holiday weekend right here at beautiful Wrigley Field.
- 28:00Odu Fitch instead of throwing to Steigl, who's still not over in the bag at first.
- 28:05Coach Lloyd, Lou Boudreau reporting, Al Aldrich, your engineer, Jack Medivich, our producer.
- 28:11The 0-2 delivery to Middowall.
- 28:13He wasted high and outside. Ball one, strike two.
- 28:20One-eighth-three-year-old John Candelaria.
- 28:24Great basketball player in high school, ended the same high school as Jabbar.
- 28:301-2 delivery.
- 28:31One-on-a-high foul down the right field side. He didn't have much of a cut at that one.
- 28:35Steigl chasing it, the wind pushing it, and it goes into the seat just beyond the first base dugout.
- 28:47Now one of the reasons for the success of this Pittsburgh ball club this year,
- 28:51they not only have a well-balanced attack, good hitting in here,
- 28:57they also have better than expected pitching. Their staff earned run average is an excellent one, 3.36.
- 29:06Candelaria leads them. There's a swing and a high fly down the right field line.
- 29:10The wind pushing it, but coming over is Crocker. The big guy grabs it in fair territory,
- 29:15just beyond the visiting bullpen, and that retires a side.
- 29:18And Middowall didn't have much of a cut at that one either.
- 29:23No runs, no hits, a walk, and again the Cubs leave a man on it.
- 29:27At the end of two innings of play at Wrigley Field,
- 29:30Candelaria is still lead off in the top of the batting order with the Pirates leading one to nothing.
- 29:36You've read good things about them, you've admired them on the street, and now you want one.
- 29:40No, I'm not talking about a good-looking gal. I beat a new rotary engine Mazda, but who do you buy it from?
- 29:46You can make the rounds of all the little Mazda dealers in town,
- 29:49or you can save yourself a lot of time and trouble by coming out to the largest selling Mazda dealer in Chicagoland,
- 29:56Fireside Mazda in Schaumburg.
- 29:58At Fireside you won't shop from a brochure, you'll get to see all the models firsthand.
- 30:03Fireside always has over 80 GLCs in stock at all times,
- 30:07including plenty of sporty little piston-engine Mazda-Mizers, too.
- 30:11No doubt about it, you'll like Fireside's low, low prices, too.
- 30:15You'll even find their showroom a welcome change of pace from ordinary dealers.
- 30:19You'll find couches, easy chairs, snuggled up to a big, homey fireplace that coffee's always on,
- 30:25and the salespeople are always considerate.
- 30:27Visit Fireside, Chrysler Plymouth Mazda on Golf Road, just west of the Woodfield Shopping Center in Schaumburg.
- 30:34No doubt about it, you'll enjoy shopping at Fireside.
- 30:46Well, you can feel the excitement, Lou, whenever they get a band on bass.
- 30:50Although they went down in order in that first inning, but as soon as Oliver got on at the start of that second inning,
- 30:55they could tell that there was going to be something brewing.
- 31:00Well, this is an exciting ball club as long as you can run.
- 31:04When you run, you put a lot of action into the ball game.
- 31:14Candelaria will lead off.
- 31:16He's 3 for 16, but he's made good use of those three hits.
- 31:21He has four RBI.
- 31:25First pitch to him, swing and a foul out of play, strike one.
- 31:30Hirots lead the Cubs 1-0.
- 31:39Candelaria, left-handed hitter.
- 31:42Slow curve ball inside and low, 1-1 to count.
- 31:50Morales playing at left center, playing Candelaria to swing late.
- 31:54He does and fouls it off out of play.
- 32:02One ball, two strikes.
- 32:11Strike three called.
- 32:13Candelaria thought that ball was going to be low.
- 32:17First strikeout, second strikeout for Bonham.
- 32:22Now here's the top of the order, Moreno.
- 32:27Grounded to first base, Bittner, and he handled a play unassisted to open up the game.
- 32:41Bonham's first pitch on its way, a curve ball swing and a miss.
- 32:45He'll try to get on base. He's quick. He can run.
- 32:52And Tiberius is playing in on the edge of the grass at third base.
- 32:57Here's the strike one pitch.
- 32:59Fastball attempts to bunt, but pops it up and Bonham has it just in front of the charging trio for the second out.
- 33:12Two outs now, and here's Tiberius. Another speedster, shortstop.
- 33:21Tiberius bunted and was out to Bittner.
- 33:33Pirates one, Cubs nothing, top of the third inning. First pitch by Bonham, curve ball low, ball one.
- 33:49One ball pitch, swing and a miss on another curve ball. That one was an overhand curve ball over the strike zone.
- 33:58That's on account now, even though Tiberius is a right-handed hitter, Bonham Tiberius isn't giving him anything at third.
- 34:06He's in on the edge of the grass.
- 34:10Swing and a high chopping ball of the second baseman trio has it. Close to first in time.
- 34:16In the third inning, no runs, no hits. Nobody left out base for the Pirates.
- 34:20The Cubs come to bat trailing one to nothing.
- 34:30Water from God's country. Sparkling, pure spring water.
- 34:36Gottlieb Heilemann spent years looking for water like this. He found it in La Crosse, Wisconsin in 1853.
- 34:46Heilemann still uses this water today to pure brew, double brew a great light beer called Old Style in a traditional, old world way called poisoning.
- 34:58Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive. But at Old Style we don't aim to make the most beer, only the best.
- 35:09That's why we use poisoning and sparkling, pure Wisconsin spring water. Taste the difference they make. Try Old Style. Pure brewed in God's country.
- 35:23Heilemann Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 35:33In the third inning, Bill Bonham will lead off the same as Candelaria did in the top of the inning. Bonham will be followed by DeJesus and Klein.
- 35:45No other action this afternoon but St. Louis sitting by and they know that if they win tonight against Montreal, they'll gain a game on somebody ahead of them as the Cubs are ahead of them and also the Pirates.
- 36:02Cubs two games ahead of St. Louis. Here's a swing and a miss by Bonham, strike one. While the Cardinals trail Pittsburgh by three and a half games.
- 36:16Strike one pitch by the South Pole, fastball pop foul out of the net. Strike two.
- 36:32Parker, the right fielder, only about 25 feet off of the right field line. Ball Reno, very shallow in center. There's a swing and a foul into the bullpen down the right field line.
- 36:54Two strikes to Bill Bonham. Curveball popped up right behind second base. Stenit is there. Now he moves in and grabs it for the out.
- 37:11Well, DeJesus, who's single, to open up this ballgame. He has the only hit of Candelaria thus far.
- 37:27Pirates one, Cubs nothing. Third inning. Tall Candelaria into the lineup. There's the pitch. Fastball for a strike call says Doug Harvey.
- 37:53One out, nobody on base. The pitch on its way. High, one and one to count.
- 38:02Stardulant first, Stenit at second, Taberis at short and Gardner at third. One and one pitch, curveball popped foul. Talking about Gardner at third.
- 38:23They traded for Gardner and Tommy Helms and a minor league pitcher by the name of Chris Batten, but they gave up Justy, Doc Middich, Rich Langford, Doug Blair.
- 38:37Here's a swing and a foul ball to the right field. Parker's there, he has it. Two outs. That's not all.
- 38:45They gave up Mitchell, Page, and a minor leaguer, Tony Armis. Mitchell and Page having a great season thus far with the Oakland Aves.
- 39:02So they gave up quite a few men for Gardner, but he's filling the spot that was vacated when Hefner was traded to Philadelphia. Or I should say a free agent sign.
- 39:16First pitch now to Klein, ball. Klein's flied out to Oliver at left field, first time at bat.
- 39:28Two outs, nobody on base. Ball one pitch, swing and a foul into the upper deck. Oh, it hits the facade down to the folks below.
- 39:44One and one to count now to Klein. Candelaria is ready. Here's the pitch. A fast ball and he fouls it down the right field line.
- 39:58This is an indication that Candelaria's fast ball is a little quick for the bats or the Cubs thus far.
- 40:09He really whips that ball in there and he's got a good curve ball with it. The pitch, there's the curve ball and Klein just called out on strikes.
- 40:20Three strikeouts for Candelaria in the third inning for the Cubs. No runs, no hits, nobody left on base. At the end of three, Pittsburgh won the Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 40:34No flop riding on your next move. That's why it should be riding with the mover you know, Mayflower moving in storage.
- 40:41Because all interstate movers charge about the same and you're not going to risk moving your household possessions with anyone but the best.
- 40:49Call Mayflower moving in storage in Elmhurst, 279-0060. Moving Chicagoans everywhere.
- 40:56What's your next move? Call Mayflower moving in storage, 279-0060.
- 41:02Change to Cam 2 motor oil, tough enough for any car.
- 41:06What a generation to make it the best, Cam 2.
- 41:11These kind of roads, I need a four wheel drive. My kind of driving, I need Cam 2.
- 41:16Change your mode, the Cam 2 will know it's tough.
- 41:20It's tough enough for me. You'll love it, Cam 2.
- 41:23The Cam is really pretty.
- 41:25Cam 2 motor oil, race tough to run tough in any car.
- 41:29From Senoko.
- 41:32Now it sears there pennies and turnstiles.
- 41:38You know to describe these uniforms of the pirates, it's canary yellow pants trimmed down the side with two black stripes, then a white stripe in between.
- 41:54They have a white jersey with red or yellow and black stripes along the jerseys.
- 42:02They also have a complete black jersey.
- 42:06Here's the first pitch to the first hitter here in the fourth inning, it's Parker.
- 42:12He has a yellow helmet on.
- 42:15They have an old timers cap on as the coaches wear with a yellow stripe just around the cap.
- 42:24There's a pitch inside, one and one to count.
- 42:32I don't know when and how they wear the black jerseys, but they are in the clubhouse swinging a foul out of play on one of Bonham's fastballs.
- 42:43I think they've got about a half a dozen different kinds of uniforms.
- 42:49A half a dozen?
- 42:51Yeah, different kinds of uniforms.
- 42:55Gonna lead the league sartorially.
- 42:58And it's closing.
- 43:01One and two pitch, a let up.
- 43:03Foul down the right field line.
- 43:05Right over the dugout.
- 43:09They have bright yellow jackets, black sleeves with yellow stripes down the arms.
- 43:24One ball, two strikes, here's the pitch.
- 43:27Curve ball popped up.
- 43:293-0 back on the outfield grass at second base. Now he moves in to the dirt part of the infield and makes the catch for the out.
- 43:41One out, Al Oliver.
- 43:46Chuck Tanner says the reason Parker is hitting so well, even though he's a very fine hitter, he's 0 for 2 today, but he entered this ball game hitting 3-71.
- 43:58It's because of this fellow at the plate.
- 44:01Here's a strike called Al Oliver.
- 44:09Bonham's next pitch, outside ball wide.
- 44:17Oliver hitting 3-11 and he has one hit today.
- 44:25Next pitch is inside.
- 44:34Ball two, strike one, the pitch on its way, let up, tap foul.
- 44:39That's Bonham's bread and butter pitch.
- 44:42When he's in a ball game and has control with that good fast ball, he gets ahead of the hitters or even with them.
- 44:51That let up is a great pitch.
- 44:54The 2-2 pitch, swing and a ground ball to second baseman, Trio has it, tosses it to Bittner for the out.
- 45:02Two outs in the fourth inning.
- 45:04Pirates lead 1-0, scoring one run in the second inning.
- 45:09When they touch the bottom, all of the three hits that they have thus far.
- 45:19Here's Dodger with that, 395 clear home runs.
- 45:26First pitch, curve ball low, ball wide, still to do up next.
- 45:38Bonham is ready, ball one pitch is a let up, low, ball two, no strike.
- 45:52The pitch on its way, half ball, first strike and he had a little extra on that one.
- 45:57And you know he had to have an extra on it to get it past Tarjul because he would be swinging on a two-and-no pitch with two outs, nobody on base.
- 46:07Two-and-one pitch, another fast ball but that one is just inside.
- 46:12Three-and-one, so be careful of this one.
- 46:20The pitch on its way, let up, tap, foul, down to the coach.
- 46:27First base and now the count is three and two. Two outs, nobody on base, fourth inning, pirates lead 1-0.
- 46:42Bonham is ready, gets his sign from the middle wall, here's the pitch, fast ball, there's one hit deep to left center, way back, climbs it near the wall and he has it.
- 46:52Bonham was on his knees on the mound. He thought that ball was gone and so did a couple of other reporters and radio men.
- 47:03But that win is cool, coming off of the lake and held it up, climbs took it for the outs.
- 47:10In the fourth inning, no runs, no hits, nobody left on base.
- 47:15At the end of three and a half innings of play, Pittsburgh 1, Cubs nothing. No runs, no hits, nobody left on base.
- 47:24At the end of three and a half innings of play, Pittsburgh 1, Cubs nothing.
- 47:30Fans, when you think about it, signs are important to the ebb and flow of any baseball game.
- 47:35There's a sign for hit and run, signs for steal but and a whole lot more to remember.
- 47:40Now when it comes to the ebb and flow of beer drinking, there's only one sign you have to remember.
- 47:46And that's the sign on bottles or cans of Heilman's Old Style.
- 47:51What gives this beer its great light flavor?
- 47:54Well, Old Style is brewed in God's country, where the skies are clear, the air is clean and crisp,
- 48:01and the sparkling pure Wisconsin spring water flows from deep beneath the ground.
- 48:06Some folks say all the way from Canada.
- 48:09With water like this, when you brew a beer once, you've got a good beer.
- 48:14But when you brew a beer twice, you've got a great light beer.
- 48:18This double brewing, pure brewing process is called poisoning.
- 48:22It's the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive.
- 48:27Try Old Style, pure brewed in God's country.
- 48:40Larry Bittner will lead off the fours inning for the Cubs.
- 48:43And if that's the indication of how that wind is blowing and keeping that ball in the ballpark off of Star Joe's bat,
- 48:53it'd be tough to get a home run today.
- 48:57Here's the swing and a line done over Candelaria's head into center field for a base hit.
- 49:03Bittner did wait.
- 49:07Second hit for the Cubs.
- 49:08Here's Mercer, who struck out in the first inning.
- 49:19A nice swing run at first base for the Cubs, if they can move him around.
- 49:27Star Joe's still off first base.
- 49:29Don't make any difference whether a left-handed hitter or a right-handed hitter is at bat.
- 49:34With a man on first, he's still off of the base.
- 49:38Curve ball for a strike called to Mercer.
- 49:47Bittner with his lead just behind Star Joe.
- 49:55Now Candelaria has a sign.
- 49:57He's into the stretch.
- 50:00The pitch.
- 50:01Swing and a one-hopper right to Star Joe.
- 50:03He touches first but cannot throw to second.
- 50:06Well, there's the merit of playing right there as Mercer hit that ball well, very hard.
- 50:14Star Joe went after the ball and said, look at here, it's in its glove.
- 50:20On a short hop, he was so startled, instead of forcing Bittner at second, he ran over and touched first.
- 50:29Bittner advances to second.
- 50:33One out.
- 50:34Jerry Morales walked in the second inning.
- 50:40First pitch to Jerry on its way.
- 50:44Outside fastball.
- 50:46Ball one.
- 50:51Bittner with a tying run at the second base.
- 50:54One out.
- 50:57That Oliver is playing a shallow center field.
- 51:01One ball pitch on its way.
- 51:04Morales was going after the pitch but it was over the outside corner so he decided not to swing.
- 51:13One and one to count now to Jerry.
- 51:16Here's the one and one pitch by Candelaria.
- 51:19Fastball swing and line drive.
- 51:21Bates hit the center field.
- 51:23Here comes Bittner.
- 51:24Here is Oliver throwing the plate.
- 51:26Cut off.
- 51:27Star Joe throws to second.
- 51:28Gets Morales.
- 51:30But the score is tied.
- 51:32That's exactly what the base runner is supposed to do.
- 51:35Go on to second.
- 51:37If the throw is to the plate.
- 51:39And where Oliver was playing, it could have been close.
- 51:44Star Joe, the cutoff man, seeing Morales go to second, cut off the ball.
- 51:51And with one out, that allows the tying run to score.
- 51:55But Morales is thrown out at second base.
- 51:58But it's a brand new ball game.
- 52:00One to one.
- 52:03Morales is out eight to three to four.
- 52:08Here's Treo at bat.
- 52:10Curve ball for a strike call.
- 52:14Each team now with one run, three hits.
- 52:21Swing and a foul back to the screen.
- 52:25Two strikes on Treo.
- 52:31Cubs won, Pirates won, fourth inning.
- 52:38The pitch from Candelaria inside.
- 52:42Ball one, strike two as he wasted that one.
- 52:51Here's the pitch on the way.
- 52:53Swing and a foul back to the screen.
- 52:55Treo just missing that good fast ball.
- 53:08Candelaria now gets his sign.
- 53:10He has his wind up.
- 53:11He takes the pitch to Treo.
- 53:13Fast ball coming here.
- 53:14Twenty feet to the left center.
- 53:16Way back.
- 53:17Going, going.
- 53:18Hey, get the good guy.
- 53:27Danny Treo puts the Cubs ahead with his fourth home run of the season.
- 53:35And you know very well that ball had to be tagged.
- 53:39So the little fella has a lot of strength in those wrists and those arms.
- 53:45As that ball landed in the second roll, in the bleachers, Cubs lead to the one.
- 53:54Here is Onkverris at bat.
- 54:00All right, ball one.
- 54:05Ganner is not waiting.
- 54:07He's going to warm up somebody right now.
- 54:10He doesn't want to get the Cubs out in front by too many runs.
- 54:13Another ball for a strike taken.
- 54:16Jones is warming up.
- 54:22A right-hander for the Pirates.
- 54:26One and one pitch.
- 54:28Check his swing in time.
- 54:30They ask for the appeal.
- 54:32First base up, Pirate Pryor says no.
- 54:35He held up.
- 54:37Cubs two, Pirates one, we're in the fourth inning.
- 54:45The pitch down to Varus.
- 54:47High outside, ball three.
- 54:49That's paused by seconds for station identification.
- 54:52This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 54:56This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 55:03Ontiveros takes a strike over the outside corner.
- 55:06Full count now, three and two.
- 55:10Bittnero from the off the inning with a single.
- 55:13Mercer grounded out to Stargell.
- 55:15Morales single in a tying run.
- 55:17And then Pryor hit a hole down.
- 55:20There's the ground ball.
- 55:22Mads Gardner for a base hit.
- 55:24And Delaria, curved out to Varus on the three and two pitch.
- 55:29But he was protecting the plate and shot a single to left field.
- 55:36That's the fourth hit in the inning for the Cubs.
- 55:40And now, three-fourths of that infield is around and Delaria to try to settle them down.
- 55:49I think the home run by Pryor really upset them because Stargell,
- 55:55in this reporter's opinion, hit one as hard as he could to left center.
- 56:01Bonham thought it was out, but it was high enough that the wind held it in for Klein.
- 56:09Sherry, pitching coach, now out there talking the candle area.
- 56:19Two outs on to Varus at first base and middle wall to hitter.
- 56:26Cubs lead 2-1.
- 56:33Middle wall levels about over the plate.
- 56:35Candelaria's set.
- 56:37Here's the pitch.
- 56:38Fastball first strike call.
- 56:41Stargell once again.
- 56:44He's playing about eight feet or ten feet off of the bag.
- 56:51The pitch.
- 56:52Curveball.
- 56:53Swinger groundball to third baseman.
- 56:55Gardner has it.
- 56:56Throws to Stargell for the out.
- 56:58That closes the fourth inning, but not before the Cubs score.
- 57:02Two runs.
- 57:04Four hits.
- 57:05One man left on base.
- 57:08At the end of four complete innings of play, Cubs 2-Pittsburgh.
- 57:13Cubs 0-1.

- 58:28smash off the Badamanti Trio, the fourth home run of the year.
- 58:32All of them have come in this month of May, and all of them out here at Wrigley Field.
- 58:38And Bill Bottom now, nursing a one-run lead, will be facing Renny Stennett,
- 58:43the second baseman who's singled in the second inning.
- 58:48Bill Garner, who's singled and drove in their only run of the day,
- 58:52and then the catcher, Duffy Dyer, with the runner going from first base
- 58:56and two strikes on Dyer, he struck out and Minnerwald's perfect peg to DeJesus
- 59:01nailed Garner for a double play.
- 59:14Renny Stennett now hitting just about 291 or 292 for the year.
- 59:30Wind up on the first pitch.
- 59:32Curveball, it's a little bit low, ball one.
- 59:36Well, we've got a couple of young fine baseball players we want to talk about here in a moment.
- 59:41From Northwestern, one old pitch, swung out, he lines a deep foul down the right field side out of play,
- 59:47one-on-one on him.
- 59:49A fellow who led the Big Ten in hitting this spring from Glenbrook South,
- 59:54Jr. up at Northwestern, Kirk Brooks, all he did is hit 442 for the Wildcats.
- 1:00:02Fastball fouled out of play way to the upper deck on the right side.
- 1:00:09One and two.
- 1:00:13Baseball coach, the Wildcats' George McKenna out here this afternoon
- 1:00:17with his business manager, Ed Lutz.
- 1:00:24They also had the leading RBI man of the Big Ten up at Northwestern, sophomore Dave Hogue.
- 1:00:32Here's the pitch.
- 1:00:33Light up, swung on, ground ball, deep in the hole, the acer's long throw.
- 1:00:37He is out safe at first base.
- 1:00:40Minner with a long stretch.
- 1:00:43Across the infield must have had his foot an inch or so off the bag.
- 1:00:47Paul Breyer has ruled that the speed he read or he's sent it, he is on at first base.
- 1:00:55That play.
- 1:01:03Minner thought they had him.
- 1:01:07Infield single and sent it is 2 for 2.
- 1:01:10Left to keep an eye on him, he has 12 stolen bases and 17 attempts.
- 1:01:15Garner, good hit and run man stepping in.
- 1:01:17Right hander, singled in a run in the second.
- 1:01:20Fomally with the A's, a throw to first.
- 1:01:23Send it back standing.
- 1:01:26Ten catcher, sophomore Dave Hogue.
- 1:01:30Let the Big Ten in, runs batted in with 57.
- 1:01:35Here's the pitch.
- 1:01:36Fast ball into tight, just above the knees to the right hander hitting Garner.
- 1:01:411 and 0.
- 1:01:44Pirates with a potential tying run on it first on an infield single.
- 1:01:52Remember they love to run.
- 1:01:54Stretched by a bottom, the runner doesn't go.
- 1:01:56Swing and a high fly ball to the left fielder, Gene Client is going to be caught.
- 1:02:01He waits, comes in a few steps ahead of baby.
- 1:02:03One gone.
- 1:02:07So Garner can't get the man up to second.
- 1:02:11That'll bring up the catcher, Duffy Dyer, who's struck out in the second.
- 1:02:17That resulted in a double play and retired the side.
- 1:02:21The 13th time the Duffy has spanned this year.
- 1:02:25He has been hitting well.
- 1:02:30Bottom of the pair strikeouts for the day, giving up four hits.
- 1:02:34Putting the infield single here by Stenett.
- 1:02:44Right hander into the stretch.
- 1:02:47Pitch to Duffy, swung out, he loops a high fly ball down the right fielder line.
- 1:02:51Mercer coming over, coming over, crosses the line and the wind pushes it into the box seats.
- 1:02:55Out of play.
- 1:02:58Boy, it really had an effect on that one.
- 1:03:01With a high sky here today, bright sky, and the wind blowing the way it is,
- 1:03:08right fiel can be very, very tricky.
- 1:03:10Just about any spot can be a free field on a day like this.
- 1:03:14But despite that strong wind blowing in Manny Treo, line to Homer.
- 1:03:22That has given the Cubs the lead, 2-1 here in the fifth.
- 1:03:27Bottom working on the catcher, Duffy Dyer.
- 1:03:30Go to first, slides back in, hit first safely.
- 1:03:37Strike one pitch coming up.
- 1:03:40Here's the stretch.
- 1:03:42The kick to pitch, way low and outside, ball one, strike one.
- 1:03:47Stenett is given no indication of going.
- 1:03:50Dyer now looking down to the third base coach, Dill Lanette,
- 1:03:54to see whether or not they might have a hit and run or whether the runner might be trying to go.
- 1:04:00He has a pretty good lead.
- 1:04:05Bottom steps off the pitching rubber.
- 1:04:07Dyer steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:04:10Stenett still with a pretty good lead now.
- 1:04:12His bottom plants that right foot back in the rubber.
- 1:04:15Watch another set of signs.
- 1:04:17He's got it, he's ready.
- 1:04:19Drows to first, runner back safely.
- 1:04:21Pretty good move that time by Bill.
- 1:04:27Boy, these are really colorful uniforms.
- 1:04:29These pirates are worrying.
- 1:04:33One off, one one delivery, another throw to first.
- 1:04:35And he falls back in the back safely again.
- 1:04:42Doesn't bother to shake much of the dirt off those right lemon yellow pants.
- 1:04:48There he goes.
- 1:04:49He's got the pitch out, Middlwald's throw.
- 1:04:51He hates to put the drag on him, he gets out.
- 1:04:57Beautiful work.
- 1:04:59Middlwald, coming, he's coming.
- 1:05:01All for the pitch out.
- 1:05:04Stenett, Dill on his back on a second base.
- 1:05:08Looks like he might have hurt his back.
- 1:05:11Trying to go in there.
- 1:05:13He's been shot down for the sixth time this year out of 18 attempts.
- 1:05:18Middlwald is two for two against the pirates here today in stunted base attempts.
- 1:05:26Trainer out there talking, checking where he's Stenett.
- 1:05:32He had that right leg extended well out in front of him.
- 1:05:35The peg had him beat by plenty.
- 1:05:37The ace is putting the tag on him.
- 1:05:40Hard on his back into second base, they're helping him do his feet now.
- 1:05:49Al Monchak and the trainer, Tony Pateroma out there, he's flexing his knees.
- 1:06:02Now he's going to walk off under his own power.
- 1:06:09Middlwald has made two fine pegs.
- 1:06:14But he sensed that one was coming.
- 1:06:16Just as we did, we saw Stenett extend that lead after Lynette had given another set aside to the hitters.
- 1:06:23So the count is two and one.
- 1:06:26There's a strike call right at the knees.
- 1:06:29All two strike two.
- 1:06:33Bases are empty.
- 1:06:35So the two to one lead, we're in the fifth inning.
- 1:06:39Bottom on the windup, here's the delivery.
- 1:06:41That ball broke into the dirt.
- 1:06:43Ball three, strike two on Duffy Dyer.
- 1:06:45The pitcher, due up next.
- 1:06:49Happy birthday to Carl Groh celebrating his 82nd birthday right out here at Wrigley Field today.
- 1:06:58Windup three, two pitch.
- 1:07:00Dyer takes the fastball, just misses inside at the knees.
- 1:07:06That's the first walk issued by Bottom, and it brings up the pitcher.
- 1:07:11Twenty-three year old John Candeleria.
- 1:07:17Looked at strike three when he led off the third inning.
- 1:07:21Stretch the pitch.
- 1:07:22Fastball swung out, a bouncing ball back to the mound.
- 1:07:24It's going to be easy.
- 1:07:25He's got it by 20. That retires a sign.
- 1:07:33Easy one hopper.
- 1:07:35No runs for the Bucks in the fifth.
- 1:07:37One hit, a walk, then caught stealing.
- 1:07:39One man left on.
- 1:07:41So the Cubs come to bat at Wrigley Field in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Bill Bottom is going to lead off.
- 1:07:46The Cubs are leading two to one.
- 1:07:51Hello, General Finance.
- 1:07:52Friendly Bob Adams speaking.
- 1:07:54Bob, can you handle an emergency loan?
- 1:07:56I think so.
- 1:07:57I'll need a loan for moving expenses because I finally went and did it.
- 1:08:00Who's this?
- 1:08:01The guy they said wouldn't do it.
- 1:08:03Who?
- 1:08:04Steve Kelly.
- 1:08:05And you know what?
- 1:08:06You did it.
- 1:08:07Right.
- 1:08:08Went right in and said, boss, I've had it with these crazy working hours.
- 1:08:12And furthermore, I don't think much of my salary here either.
- 1:08:15Isn't that good what I said?
- 1:08:16What?
- 1:08:17What happened, Mr. Kelly?
- 1:08:18He fired me.
- 1:08:19That's not good.
- 1:08:20I got another job, though. That's not bad, is it?
- 1:08:22No, that's good.
- 1:08:23No, that's bad.
- 1:08:24It's in another state, Bob.
- 1:08:25Oh, well, there's good and bad in everything, I guess.
- 1:08:27You know, Bob, there's good and bad in everything, I guess.
- 1:08:30I heard that somewhere.
- 1:08:32So about that emergency loan?
- 1:08:34Well, you can always get a little help from a friend.
- 1:08:36I want you to think about something, Bob.
- 1:08:38Yes.
- 1:08:39It's nice to know you can always get a little help from a friend at General Finance.
- 1:08:45Over 65 General Finance offices in the Chicagoland area to borrow up to $10,000.
- 1:08:51And over 3,000, also an office in Mundelein.
- 1:08:59Well, some of the gals out here with the tank tops today,
- 1:09:03brought up on the halter tops, enjoying the bright summer sunshine
- 1:09:10and a nice cool breeze off the lake and some of the delicious refreshments here at Brighley Field.
- 1:09:16Ladies Day at the ballpark, as it will be every Friday that comes their home this year.
- 1:09:22Take advantage of it, gals.
- 1:09:25Bottom popped up when he let off the third.
- 1:09:29Candler, he has a windup, the left hander's first pitch, fastball,
- 1:09:33Swagati's late, bowels it down the right field line, into the box, seats out of play.
- 1:09:38Steve, right one on Bill.
- 1:09:44Windup the pitch, curve, misses outside, ball one, strike one.
- 1:09:52White Sox tonight taking on the Yankees in New York, and we wish them good luck.
- 1:09:57One-one pitch, strike call, the fastball, one and two.
- 1:10:02Ken Brett going after his sixth one of the year, facing the catfish.
- 1:10:07Hunter, one and three for the Yankees.
- 1:10:10One-two pitch, fastball, taken, press right.
- 1:10:14He thought it was going to be outside at the knees, but the call goes to John Candleria,
- 1:10:22the 23-year-old left hander, as his fourth strike out of the day.
- 1:10:28He starts today with the best turned run average of them, the regular starting pitchers in the National League.
- 1:10:33Candleria does. That homer off of him was only the third he's given up this year.
- 1:10:38Here's Yvonne DeJesus, who's single, stolen second, and flied to right.
- 1:10:42Right hander swings, a fastball jams him, he piles it back out of play.
- 1:10:50Shepherd Astro, varsity baseball team from Palos Heights out here enjoying this exciting ball game today.
- 1:10:57Shepherd Astro, varsity team from Palos Heights.
- 1:11:01Hole one, did a brief. DeJesus tries to bunt the fastball, gets it out near the mound.
- 1:11:05Candleria picks it up, whirls and throws. He's got him.
- 1:11:08DeJesus really hustling down the line. He got it a little bit nearer the pitcher's mound than he wanted to.
- 1:11:14Candleria off the mound in a hurry. He's a good athlete.
- 1:11:21Not every pitcher can feel that position that well, but his momentum, of course,
- 1:11:25carries him a bit off the mound towards the third base side, and that helps him in that spot.
- 1:11:31The base is empty for Gene Clines, who's flied to left and looked at strike three today against these old Pittsburgh teammates.
- 1:11:39Shot of the day hitting 390. Here's the pitch. Right hander ticks. Fastball's a little high, ball one.
- 1:11:50Nobody on. Two-gov, two-to-one scorecups. Bottom of the fifth. Wind up the delivery. Swung on. Fouls it. Over to the first base side.
- 1:12:02From Dwight, Illinois. Here in their annual lobby.
- 1:12:08They say the 18 from Dwight, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries at beautiful Wrigley Field.
- 1:12:15How about you? You make it tomorrow or Sunday? I hope so.
- 1:12:25Number 18, Gene Clines stepping back in there.
- 1:12:30Candleria in the wind up. One-one delivery. Fastball swung on. He fouls it back out of play.
- 1:12:35This guy is big and strong. He can challenge you with that fastball.
- 1:12:39He did with Trejo. Matt, he responded to that challenge with his fourth home run of this month of May.
- 1:12:52Now the wind up. One-two pitch. Swung on. A high pop-up into right field. Dave Parker is there.
- 1:12:57Ripping in into his left. The big fellow gloves it one-handed. And the Cubs in the fifth inning go down in order.
- 1:13:07Now at the end of five at Wrigley Field. Pittsburgh will send the top of the batting order up against Bill Bottoms with the score that Cubs do.
- 1:13:15The Pirates won.
- 1:13:17You know, Lou, I think Al Gaines travels as much as we do. Look at those car-buying crutch he takes to Detroit every week.
- 1:13:23You know, Al, a lot of air miles, Vince. All right. But we should tell the fans we're talking about Al Gaines, president of Fireside Chrysler Permanent.
- 1:13:31We better also tell them when it comes to one-of-a-kind, executive-driven used cars.
- 1:13:35There's no doubt about it. Al Gaines keeps Fireside on top.
- 1:13:39That's right, fans. Al flies to Detroit every two weeks to purchase luxurious autos pre-driven by Chrysler Corporation executives.
- 1:13:47These cars have really been babied. In some cases, they're barely broken in.
- 1:13:51And in most cases, they're loaded with expensive options. Boy, that cost you thousands of dollars to order a new car with all the elegant convenience equipment that these cars have.
- 1:13:59But because these autos are slightly used and because Al buys volume and saves a bundle, you do too.
- 1:14:05Save on town and country wagons, New Yorkers and Newports and Cordovas or pick a Dodge Monaco or a Plymouth Duster or Fury. Fireside has them all.
- 1:14:13And there's always between 25 and 50 in stock at Fireside Chrysler Plymouth on Golf Road just west of the Woodfield Shopping Center in Schaumper.
- 1:14:21Now, if you want something really special in executive cars, there's no doubt about it. Fireside Chrysler Plymouth's the place to shop.
- 1:14:33Bill Bottom will be facing Omar Marino. He tried to bunt his last time up in the third and he popped it up to the pitcher.
- 1:14:41He ground it out to Larry Binder when he let off the ball game.
- 1:14:46So he's all for two today. Left-hander with excellent speed, a good man to keep off the bases.
- 1:14:54Hey, we've got a gas-saving and fun-to-do idea for your group, your club or your organization.
- 1:15:00An afternoon of baseball right out here at the ballpark. Manager and group sales Ernie Banks and his staff will arrange for everything from tickets to transportation.
- 1:15:08Charter bus service can bring the whole gang right out here to the ballpark.
- 1:15:12First pitch, sexy swing, it's a strike.
- 1:15:17For complete details about the Ernie Banks special group package, call is the pitch.
- 1:15:23Fastball, he takes it inside, one-on-one. EB71919, that's EB71919, area code 312.
- 1:15:31Call collect if you live out of town, messy furnished by the Cubs.
- 1:15:36One-one pitch, dips a little low, two-and-one on Marino.
- 1:15:47Ball to strike one. Dangerous guy to let reach.
- 1:15:51Bottom has not been behind many hitters. Here's the pitch.
- 1:15:54Fastball and he fouls it out of play to the left side.
- 1:15:58Bottom looks like he's determined that this guy is going to get out. He's going to have to hit his way on.
- 1:16:02Came in with a good fastball.
- 1:16:08Marino carried that black bat to the plate.
- 1:16:13Right, Canary yellow helmet, same for the pants.
- 1:16:16White shirts with the upstanding deep vertical stripe.
- 1:16:21Here's a swing at him as he got it. A good fastball.
- 1:16:26Right about hip high and in on him.
- 1:16:31Three strikeouts for bottom today.
- 1:16:34Thirty-six for the year for him.
- 1:16:38Here's Frankie Taveras.
- 1:16:43When he tried to reach with a butt in the first inning,
- 1:16:46ball bounced up and hit him when he was out in front of the plate in fair territory.
- 1:16:50Then he bounced out. Look out, pitch inside and it nicks him on the left hip.
- 1:16:55I think it's on the hip, maybe the hand.
- 1:16:58What's for the trainer? Tony Bodderoam is coming out to check one of his players, but he says he's okay.
- 1:17:05It's not a fastball. Just didn't break.
- 1:17:18Well, they got a golf club in that right hand.
- 1:17:26They wear his golf clubs or batting clubs on both hands when he's on the bases.
- 1:17:33Maybe to protect his hands when he slides.
- 1:17:40It's fastball. They have the potential tying run on base.
- 1:17:46Left-hander Dave Parker to be followed by another left-hander to be followed by another left-hander.
- 1:17:52Parker, 0 for 2, is lined to left field and throw the first. He's back safely and he's popped up.
- 1:17:58He started the day hitting 371.
- 1:18:04Dick left-hander, great skill. There's a throw to first and he almost picked him off.
- 1:18:11Parker is determined to win the National League Batting Championship this year.
- 1:18:17He says, not only this year, he says, I think I can do it several times. He's too big to argue with.
- 1:18:23Another throw to first and he had a little bit more steam on that one. He would have nailed it.
- 1:18:34One gone.
- 1:18:39Another throw to first and DeVaris is back safely again. Bittner almost lost it that time on the throw from bottom.
- 1:18:48DeVaris has their best record. He's 18-3. Leads them in stolen bases.
- 1:18:58Doing a little drop-throd over there to try to get himself loosened up.
- 1:19:04He makes the tying run at first base.
- 1:19:09Now he takes a pretty good lead over first. Bottom end of the stretch. Wheels another throw.
- 1:19:15That is hand bound the bag just in time to avoid being picked up.
- 1:19:23Got to keep these guys on.
- 1:19:26Middlwald has thrown out two men today trying to steal. Here's the stretch. There he goes. Pitch-out. Middlwald throws.
- 1:19:34He slides. He's safe. Back by Middlwald. Despite the pitch-out, had a little difficulty getting the ball in his grasp.
- 1:19:42Then he tried to hurry the throw and it was too high.
- 1:19:49That's all it takes for a guy like DeVaris to get in there with a stolen base his 19th of the year.
- 1:19:58Shot not only three times.
- 1:20:01George had the right idea. Call for the pitch-out.
- 1:20:06Then there is just a fraction of a second there while he was getting the ball in his grasp out of that catcher's bin.
- 1:20:13And he hurried the throw and it sailed up high.
- 1:20:16Runner at second with one away. Bottom wheels but makes no throw to second base. Nobody covering.
- 1:20:23Now the shortstop gets in. He throws and he's back in safely.
- 1:20:37Working hard to keep that man close to second base.
- 1:20:41He's got to concentrate on the hitter. Here's the pitch. Swim out of it. Beauty.
- 1:20:46Roped down sharply. Good sinker.
- 1:20:55Parker with eight homers this year including a grand slammer last Sunday against the Dodgers.
- 1:21:03They split that four-game series with the Western Division leaders.
- 1:21:09Bottom ready with a 1-1 delivery. Here it comes.
- 1:21:13Fastball swung on fouled right up in front of our booth, up out of the net.
- 1:21:19Ball one, strike two.
- 1:21:25Parker was not a very high draft choice by the Pirates.
- 1:21:28A lot of ball above were fearful that the football knee injury had suffered.
- 1:21:34Quite a steel bird. They want to protect him.
- 1:21:41Ball one, strike two remains the count as Winterwald goes out to talk to bottom.
- 1:21:50Parker, the right fielder, and of course there's constant comparison with him and the late great Roberto Clemente.
- 1:21:57But as so many say, there's only one Clemente.
- 1:22:03Last year he hit 313. Drove in 90 runs.
- 1:22:11Bottom has his work cut off. One-two pitch. Fastball swung on. He bounces over the pitcher's mound.
- 1:22:16Baris holds. The aces charge to then pick it up, throws his sink.
- 1:22:20But there is going to be interference called as the Baris, the runner, interferes with the ball.
- 1:22:29And the aces try to make the pick up on that ball.
- 1:22:33And I want to congratulate the clicker face sub-bire Andy Olson.
- 1:22:37He did not hesitate after that runner was out at first base and making that call.
- 1:22:45Ball was a high chopper over the pitcher's pound on the shortstop side and the aces had to almost literally push
- 1:22:54the Baris out of his way to get to that ball.
- 1:22:59And that you cannot do if you're a base runner. You've got to give that fielder a chance to get to that ball without any interference or obstruction.
- 1:23:11Chuck Tanner, out there beeping about it, but he has got to lose this argument.
- 1:23:19And he's out. And look at this crowd roar.
- 1:23:33Right at the aces with the put on. And Plucker will be on at first base.
- 1:23:42I think they'll just reel in a fielder's choice for him.
- 1:23:52Stick around. There may be a lot happening, not only the rest of today, but the rest of this weekend, as these two teams are really keyed up.
- 1:24:04Al Oliver stepping in at a throw to first base, face to keep Plucker on. Despite his size, he can fly.
- 1:24:14Left-hander Al Oliver swings and he misses. Strike one and a healthy gun.
- 1:24:25They rolled it just as we gave it to you. Fielder's choice in the put out to the shortstop to aces.
- 1:24:32Here's the pitch. Al Oliver lifts that front foot and he takes it low, ball one, strike one.
- 1:24:36He does that, Al Oliver. Larry Bittner, out of the great mellow out, lifts the front foot.
- 1:24:45This is the pitch approaching it. Throw to first and Parker back in safely.
- 1:24:50Let's see Parker's big. He's 6'5", about 230. He'll be 26 in June.
- 1:24:57Here's the pitch. Oliver was going to butt. Minterwald asks the appeal and he is out of there.
- 1:25:06It's a strike, I should say, not out of there. A little premature.
- 1:25:12He was going to claim that he did not go through with a butt attempt on the pitch around his knees, but Minterwald quickly asked for the appeal and he won it from Crawford, the third base up fire.
- 1:25:22So the count on him, one and two. Bottom of throw to first. Look out, he almost threw it away.
- 1:25:27Bittner had to come way off the back, prevented from going into foul territory.
- 1:25:37Two to one score. Cubs leading. Pirates batting in the sixth with two away.
- 1:25:44They have four hits off bottom. Cubs have five, including trios. There goes the runner, a swing and a drive into left field. That's going to be enough for a base hit.
- 1:25:53Here comes Parker to win it third. Clines, slips and falls. Parker is going to score the tying run.
- 1:26:00A liner down the left field line. Gene Clines lost his footing as he hustled over just beyond the couple bend, trying to keep that ball.
- 1:26:13In there so that Parker would not be able to score. But suddenly as spikes went out from under him, Parker, as I just told you a moment ago, can really turn it on.
- 1:26:24Seeing that was able to keep right on going. And it will be a double and a run batted in for Al Oliver.
- 1:26:33And the ball game is tied to a piece and Willie Starkle steps in there not going to pitch to him. He will be walked intentionally.
- 1:26:44Hit number five for the Pirates.
- 1:26:50An intentional base on balls given now to Willie Starkle.
- 1:26:56Willie starting the day hitting three oh six. He hit a drive his last time at bat that looked for all the world as though it would go into the bleachers for Al Oliver.
- 1:27:05But the wind pushed it back in.
- 1:27:09And then Jerry Morales robbed him of extra bases with a great running catch in the second inning.
- 1:27:16He's hit the ball hard twice. Rather than face him, they're going to work on Renny Stenit, a right-hander, with runners at first and second.
- 1:27:27Two gone, it's tied at two.
- 1:27:34Stenit, two for two today. It didn't field single, but they face it into right field.
- 1:27:41Bottom into the stretch. First pitch, very high, ball one, let's pause for station identification. This is WGN Chicago.
- 1:27:49This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 1:27:58Bottom getting his side. Stenit and tough hitter, feet close together.
- 1:28:04Here's the pitch to it. He swings. Chops one to Onabaris at third. Should retire the side. Here's the fake defense. There he's got him.
- 1:28:13He bounces out to Onabaris.
- 1:28:16So the attempts are warped to start the base off, but they tie it up.
- 1:28:23Strikeout, a hit batsman, stolen base, then an interference call against the runner.
- 1:28:27A fielders choice, and a double by Oliver ties it up. The only hit in the inning.
- 1:28:32Two men left on. The Cubs come to bat in the bottom of the sixth at Wrigley Field.
- 1:28:37Bittner, Mercer and Morales to face John Candeleria, Pirates two and the Cubs two.

- 1:29:49Larry Bittner to lead off. Vince Lloyd with the air at Wrigley Field.
- 1:29:57Binder single gleaning off the fourth inning. Single sharply at the first pitch up the middle.
- 1:30:05And he came in on Jerry Morales' base hit.
- 1:30:09He's one for two today against Candelaria, the wind up in the pitch.
- 1:30:14Takes one that drips inside, ball one to Larry.
- 1:30:19You know, right now Dave Parker and Manny Treo are only two points apart in their batting average for the leadership of the National League.
- 1:30:27Passball a little high, 2-0. Parker right now, according to my figures, hitting.364.
- 1:30:34And Treo hitting.362.
- 1:30:372-0 delivery to Binder. Here it is. Passball swung on and he fouls it down the left field side out of play. It's 2-1.
- 1:30:47Big group of 110 here from Chicago today representing the American Invesco Company.
- 1:30:54Eloise Metlair in charge sitting at section 110 and 11.
- 1:30:59And they're seeing a honey of a ball game. 2-1 delivery.
- 1:31:04Passball, the big guy misses outside. It's 3-1.
- 1:31:11From Northbrook, a welcome to the Boys Town Alumni Association. Jimmy O'Connell with him.
- 1:31:19Binder with a 3-1 pitch coming up levels of bat. Here's the wind up and the pitch swung on.
- 1:31:24He hit under it, fouled it back up out of the net. 3-2 on it.
- 1:31:29Galean, Michigan. Dennis Miller with a group from Galean High School.
- 1:31:36From 36th up. Perfect one.
- 1:31:41Wide up 3-2 pitch. Passball, Binder swings. Ground ball, makes it.
- 1:31:46And it's a big guy. Oh, exactly.
- 1:31:49That gear part. There was a ball going right up the middle.
- 1:31:54Here is what happened. It hit the bag at second and parried sharply over to the shortstop side.
- 1:32:01And there was Taveras to grab it on the run and throw him off.
- 1:32:05There's a situation where the bag at second dropped Larry Binder of a hit.
- 1:32:11And it was going right up the middle.
- 1:32:16What a wild game this is.
- 1:32:19I apologize for being premature in the call. If it doesn't hit the bag just exactly the way it did, he's on.
- 1:32:26Here's Bobby Mercer. Takes the bat and takes the strike.
- 1:32:31He is struck out and grounded out today.
- 1:32:35I have never seen it happen just like that.
- 1:32:41He had to Larry, he had to go over there and pass that second base bag and gratitude. Big fellow delivers the ball outside.
- 1:32:49Took a little off of it.
- 1:32:53It's a good pitcher though. Takes nothing away from him.
- 1:32:57Flash ball, he swings and misses. 1-2.
- 1:33:03Our neighbors at WGM, Gordon Tech High School.
- 1:33:07We have a group out here today. Gordon Tech, a group of 20. Gregory Foterik in charge.
- 1:33:18Ball one, strike two, pitch to Mercer.
- 1:33:21Flash ball, he picks it outside, 2-2.
- 1:33:26The group from Michigan, from Grand Rapids. 43, from the Northeast, junior high, Grand Rapids here.
- 1:33:35Ball two, strike two, pitch. Mercer gets under it.
- 1:33:38Hey, that ball is bad. Keeps it right field.
- 1:33:41Back to the ball.
- 1:33:43It is a goal.
- 1:33:453-2 Bobby Mercer.
- 1:33:48Bobby played a second and just plays that pitch triumphantly.
- 1:33:53That's for Bobby and 7th, Mel Ringer of the year.
- 1:34:03Oh, a back roll. Isn't that a beautiful sight? You couldn't be sure.
- 1:34:14Big, big welcoming delegation in that tough dugout.
- 1:34:20Tough second home run of the day.
- 1:34:24Now Morata steps in. Takes the curve for a strike. Let me tell you.
- 1:34:29Could be a two run lead. Except for that crazy ball off the man of Bittner that hit the bag at second and deflected to the shortstop.
- 1:34:37There's his wing. Hey, that ball is hit way back in the net.
- 1:34:41Hey, high up the line. That is going to be a stand up double.
- 1:34:47Al Oliver leaps as high as he could go. And he just missed making a successful catch. And Morata's just missed a bell ringer.
- 1:34:59As it is, it is a stand up double.
- 1:35:02As Candelaria beginning to come up with his pitches a little bit.
- 1:35:06May not belong for Wrigley Field today.
- 1:35:09But a great, superb effort by the left fielder, Al Oliver. Went back right near the 353 foot mark in left field.
- 1:35:21368 foot mark rather. But he just couldn't get to it.
- 1:35:28So a homer by Bobby Mercer. Now a double by Morales. Chuck Tanner has gone out to clock to Candelaria.
- 1:35:38He has a very slender right hander, Kip DeCovey, throwing in the bullpen.
- 1:35:44Morales today, a walk, a single, a double. And driven in a run. He's 2 for 2.
- 1:35:51And Manny Trejo stepping in.
- 1:35:55Hovered in the fourth inning to give the Cubs a temporary lead. They got it back.
- 1:36:00There's the ball. Too low.
- 1:36:06The last homer Mercer hit was on that day against the Potters when the Cubs hit 7-0.
- 1:36:13The look at second, the pitch to Cleo. And he takes the ball inside. 2-0.
- 1:36:20Remember that one by Mercer that day on a 3-0 pitch? A foot misker.
- 1:36:26Shortly thereafter was traded to St. Louis from San Diego.
- 1:36:312-0 delivery. Cleo takes. It's a strike right at the knees, 2-1.
- 1:36:37That's the game, of course. That's 7-0 game by the Cubs at day 1. Fairly in the lead, 23-6.
- 1:36:47Lutter at second. Cubs leading 3-2. Candelaria's pitch.
- 1:36:51Flung out a high fly ball. Parker drifting back. He's got plenty of room. He's under it.
- 1:36:56Dallas will hold at second base. That Parker's got a good arm. 2-0.
- 1:37:06Now Steve Onabera stepping in. He's singled in the fourth inning.
- 1:37:11Grilled one just out of the reach of the third baseman, Phil Garner.
- 1:37:17He's in here to give the Cubs a two-run lead.
- 1:37:27Mercer's seventh. Bell ringer of the year giving the Cubs a lead.
- 1:37:333-2 here in the sixth. The pitch. Onabera takes a strike right at the knees.
- 1:37:46Rallis at second. It'd be nice to get him in.
- 1:37:50Candelaria looks, delivers. Low and inside. 1-1 on Onabera.
- 1:37:56Steve started today hitting 3-22. The single in the fourth helped his batting average a little bit.
- 1:38:09Don Candelaria in the stretch. Fast ball. He swung on it and he was a little late.
- 1:38:16Fouled it into the grandstand section over behind first base.
- 1:38:19Bruce Sutter working in the cup bullpen.
- 1:38:23With these two squads, Sutter for the Cubs, the goose, Rich Gossage for the Pirates.
- 1:38:28You have two of the finest relief pitchers in the league.
- 1:38:31But it is not Gossage. It's Kukolki in their bullpen. Here's the pitch.
- 1:38:36Fast ball misses outside at the letters 2-2.
- 1:38:43Comes with a pair of home runs today. Mercer making it to the right field.
- 1:38:49And Treo lining the shot into the window of the bleachers and left.
- 1:38:54Two out for under a second. Here's the 2-2 pitch coming up.
- 1:38:57Onabera takes the fast ball to 2-high, ball 3, strike 2.
- 1:39:06Steve steps out of the batter's box for a moment.
- 1:39:10Now getting himself settled in again.
- 1:39:14Straightaway stance when he bats right-handed, choking up on the bat just about an inch.
- 1:39:19The 3-2 pitch swung around a fast ball foul right under the upper deck on the first base side.
- 1:39:29It winds up in the box seats.
- 1:39:33Marty Shouk, pitching coach, standing alongside Bruce Sutter in the cup bullpen.
- 1:39:39Sutter just standing now watching the action.
- 1:39:42And Delirious on the hill delivers. 3-2 pitch is high for ball 4.
- 1:39:47Missed with a fast ball and now to bring up George Smidawold.
- 1:39:54This kid has excellent control. That's only his second walk today and only the 11th of the year by Delirious.
- 1:40:02Smidawold has flied to right.
- 1:40:05Did not have a good cut then because he got himself with a hole 0-2 right up the bat.
- 1:40:09Last time at bat he bounced out to Garner at third. Here's the pitch. Swung out a miss.
- 1:40:16Good job George.
- 1:40:19He's made two perfect throws at second today.
- 1:40:23Shot down two of the pirates trying to steal. One has done it on him. Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:28Swung out and he fouls it into the upper deck.
- 1:40:32Back behind the plate. Nothing can do. He's in the hole again.
- 1:40:40The number by Bobby Mercer that's given the Cubs a lead here in the sixes is 181st in his career.
- 1:40:48Hole 2 delivery. Wasted high and inside. Ball 1 strike 2.
- 1:40:55Norm Jacobs out here today.
- 1:40:58Looks up at great baseball digest magazine.
- 1:41:06Pitch. Smidawold swings. High fly ball. The left fielder Al Oliver waiting for it.
- 1:41:12He should grab it. He does. And bat retires the side.
- 1:41:17Got under it just a little bit too much. But Mercer, 7th over of the year, here in the sixth inning, has given the Cubs a lead.
- 1:41:27He hits a walk and two men left on.
- 1:41:29And we got a honey of a ball game here at Wrigley Field today.
- 1:41:32At the end of sixth, the Cubs lead the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 to 2.
- 1:41:37You know, I think Al Gaines travels as much as we do with those car buying trips he takes to Detroit every week.
- 1:41:43You know Al, a lot of air miles, Vince, all right. But we should tell the fans we're talking about Al Gaines
- 1:41:48rising on the fireside Christ the Permanent.
- 1:41:51We better also tell them when it comes to one of a kind executive driven used cars.
- 1:41:55There's no doubt about it. Al Gaines keeps fireside on top.
- 1:41:58That's right, fans. Al flies to Detroit every two weeks to purchase a series of autos pre-driven by Chrysler Corporation executives.
- 1:42:07What a ball game.
- 1:42:12Two contenders for the Eastern Division in the National League.
- 1:42:16So far, the Cubs have asserted itself on homers by Trio and by Mercer.
- 1:42:23And although you're crazy, crazy, they bludgeoned off the second base back, prevented Mercer's ball from being a two run shot.
- 1:42:31Because just ahead of it, Bittner had hit what appeared to be a base hit, but it tarnished off the back at second right over to the shortstop.
- 1:42:40Now the bottom third of the batting order stepping in for the Pirates, and leading off is Bill Garner, right-hander.
- 1:42:47Singled and flied to left. Bottom's first pitch is a little high. Ball one to Garner.
- 1:42:53The copy's still throwing at her bullpen. In the on-deck circle, the catcher, Duffy Dyer, then will be looking for a pinch hitter.
- 1:43:00Perhaps one-oh pitch. Plung on a hard ground ball. The ace is to his left. Bobbleton picks it up, throws. He is safe at first base.
- 1:43:09That will be an error against the Cubs normally sure-handed shortstop.
- 1:43:22You know, that's only the Cubs' 32nd error of the year at playing Super Bowl.
- 1:43:31But Garner reaches to open up the seven. Duffy Dyer will be the hitter.
- 1:43:36And then, you know, it's all the press conference today. He said it's going to be the most important since he has moved his A's out from Kansas City to Oakland.
- 1:43:45Well, Charlie has announced he's going to cut ticket prices in half for the games that the A's play at home Monday through Thursday.
- 1:43:53Duffy Dyer and the right-hander takes it inside for a ball. Pretty good bargain.
- 1:44:00Monday through Thursday, Oakland A's games at home, ticket prices will be cut in half.
- 1:44:07If you're out there, sometime when they're playing, take advantage of it.
- 1:44:13Out of air, sneaking up the line at third, Justin Case Dyer tries to bust.
- 1:44:20The honor out is first. Hot Steely, first time he was on base. There's a swing. He's out in front. He drills it deep and foul. Way down the left field side, it's one-on-one.
- 1:44:34If you saw that NBA game last night, after it was pretty much decided the fourth quarter, a pretty good fight broke out.
- 1:44:42That two of the participants, Darrell Huck Dawkins and Lori Lucas, have been fined a pretty heavy blaster, $2,500 a piece for their part in that fight.
- 1:44:59Bottom steps off the pitching rubber, takes another look at Conner as good lead at first. Dyer, hit a hot hitter.
- 1:45:08Go to first. Not his best move of the day, and the runner back in standing.
- 1:45:15Commissioner of the NBA, Larry O'Brien, made that an Oxford $2,500 fine.
- 1:45:22Dawkins and Lucas, Portland Trail Blazers and the Philadelphia 76ers.
- 1:45:31One-one pitch. Shrug out of there's beauty. F.I.T. down and away. Ball once, strike two.
- 1:45:40O'Brien has issued a warning to both the coaches to avoid further problems, according to word just turned into our newsroom.
- 1:45:54Nice shoe, Jack Ramsey. Throw to first, he's back safely. Nobody out, that's a tying run at first base.
- 1:46:02Doctor reaching on the error. Duffy Dyer, the catcher. One-two delivery. Swung out, he taps one to the left side.
- 1:46:11Could be trouble, Onabarra's picking up throws. Just in time to get the runner at second base.
- 1:46:16A fine recovery on a very slow roller to the left of the cup third baseman, Steve Onabarra's. Cut it to three-oh just barely in time to erase starter.
- 1:46:29And we'll have a pinch hitter hit hot. Our catcher. Hot as oil for two is a pinch hitter this year.
- 1:46:40That's 11 hits for the seat and one of them a double. One homer driven in six runs. Hot for the 262 batting average. A left-hander.
- 1:46:53And the Larry is out of there.
- 1:46:56And among the cup seven hits today, a line smash off the bat of Ante Creel into the wind in left field and Bobby Mercer watching one over the right field wall.
- 1:47:07And the Cubs as a result of that homer have a three-two lead here in the top of the seventh with one out. Hot, a big swing out of it. Strike one.
- 1:47:26Duffy Dyer, the runner at first, Bittner is not holding him on. Laying behind the bag, here's the pitch. The left-hander takes a fast ball outside of the knees. It's one to one.
- 1:47:37Group of senior citizens here today from Loda, Illinois. 46 of them. Robert Curry in charge.
- 1:47:46The stretch by bottom. The pitch. Hot swings, then he misses. What a cut. What a two. Bottom is struck out three. Hit one batter.
- 1:48:04Two. They look for a run in the second and a run in the sixth. One to delivery. Hot swings and he looks a little foul into the seats in the third base side. One and two.
- 1:48:23And the school groups here today from St. Paschal School. 31 of them. Bob Hubert in charge. St. Paschal from Chicago.
- 1:48:37A nervous ball game. One-two delivery. Hot swings, then jam of the fast ball and he fouls it back and still one and two in the left-hander.
- 1:48:53Group from the Ironworkers District Council of 35. Figure this one out. It's Rags Squirrel Day. One-two pitch. Swim out of his bottom-legged body.
- 1:49:11And out hit the pitch hitter has struck out. Two away. Now Omar Marino to be the hitter. Fourth strikeout of the day. The third one was Marino when he let off the sixth inning.
- 1:49:32Splendorous feature. Boy, he can fly. Not a great hitter. But he moves the ball around pretty well.
- 1:49:44He moves around a bit in that batter's box. Here's the pitch to him. He swings at him at the bottom of the good fast ball. Bruce Sutter, Barney Shook, still standing shoulder to shoulder down in the bullpen.
- 1:50:01A stretch by the right-hander to the pitch. Takes the strike. Change on him and he took one right at the knees. Bottom was probably the best change up of any pitcher in the league.
- 1:50:15Had a good fast ball. He is out front on two with a runner at first and two gone at the top of the seventh inning. And the crowd really with it. Here's the stretch. The kick to the pitch. Fast ball. He wasted it high and away. Ball one strike two with the left-hander hitter.
- 1:50:37Guarding the line is Klein in left field. Playing this guy to swing late, Burscher gives him right field. One-two-bitch. Swung out of it. Strike three. Blew it tight. And bottom.
- 1:50:58He drops him out. His fourth and fifth strikeouts in the ball game here in the seventh inning. And he's getting quite a hand as he goes into the cup dugout.
- 1:51:09Seventh inning stretch in Wrigley Field. The score, the Chicago Cubs three, the Pittsburgh Pirates two.
- 1:51:22When you brew a beer in God's country, you begin with sparkling pure Wisconsin spring water. Water that flows deep beneath the ground.
- 1:51:33Then you pure brew, double brew it in a traditional old world way called poisoning.
- 1:51:41Poisoning is the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive. Most expensive because it takes more time. But Heilemann's Old Style is one American premium beer that is still fully, that's fully poisoned.
- 1:51:58Naturally carbonated. Because at Old Style, we don't aim to make the most beer. Only the best. Taste the difference Kroisney makes. Try Old Style. Pure brewed in God's country.
- 1:52:18G. Heilemann Brewing Company, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
- 1:52:28One of the big groups we mentioned earlier today that's out here, a couple hundred or so, sitting down the third base line, left field line, waving the cup banner to Bennett.
- 1:52:37American Inch Goal. Somebody did a beautiful job with their big banner. Company name over the top is black and then below it in red, big letters is Goal Cubs.
- 1:52:52The next elevation point. Cubs are going so far today. But it's only a long run lead and the splendor right hander gets to Colby. The new pitcher, Candidarius, lifted after working six innings, gave up seven base hits including homers by Treo and Bobby Mercer.
- 1:53:17Colby always wears those sun shades, ears down. All right hander. Fired the first pitchers, strike the bottom. Gets a good hand. Colby built just about like a three iron.
- 1:53:35He lined up in the pitch. Sinker swung out a miss, nothing in due. They've got a good bull fit but this guy, the deuce rich Garci is coming along well now as Jerry Forster.
- 1:53:500-2 delivery. Bottom tries to hold up any swing. The pitch is low and outside. He held in time, 1-2. Colby is 1-3 in relief this year. Been in 20 games. An excellent earned run average, 1.63.
- 1:54:07Here's the pitch. That is a breaking ball that misses outside. Ball two, strike two. He's about 6'4. Looks like he weighs 100 pounds. Shoken weight.
- 1:54:21Starts to wind up. 2-2 pitch. Swung on. He jams him with a sidearm fastball and he hits a foul down the right field side. Telling me before the ball game today that Parker is telling me, and he says, I wish I had your body that slung your waistline and all the rest of it with my muscles.
- 1:54:44Colby says there's no way in the world you can pack that much muscle into this frame. Here's a swing and a ground ball to stockle the first baseman. He flips to the pitcher covering and bottom is out of there. He's open up the bottom to 7th inning.
- 1:55:02Yvonne DeJesus, the hitter. Single still second in the first inning. Nobody could bring him in. And he flied out to the right field of Parker. Rided a bunch but he got it too near the mound. He's last time at bat.
- 1:55:16And Condon at Candler area. Starting pitcher. Drew him out. So he's 1 for 3 today. Pirates with 5 hits. The Cubs have 7. And 2, the Cubs hit the Ben Holmers. The Cubs with a 3-2 lead and the Colby winds.
- 1:55:35And the hitter flung on. Bounces and fouled on the third base side. He's up there by Garner. Reginald Aldridge tells us that we've got a big group from the Libertyville Post Office out here today.
- 1:55:51They come out to check the mail. The Colby peering through those sunglasses. Hands on his knees. Now stocks the wind and the 0-1 delivery. Taking for a strike.
- 1:56:09Nothing and 2 on Yvonne DeJesus. Tomorrow the 2Rs. Russell for the Cubs. Rooker for the Pirates who's slated to be the mound opponent here.
- 1:56:22Holgerbich. Sidearm sticking fastball. Ball wasn't striking a little low. Center fielder Marino. Very, very shallow 3-1. About as shallow as I've seen anybody play against him.
- 1:56:41He's got a fastball. He takes strike 3. And Yvonne Trenches says, ah, I can't believe it. He does now as he walks back to the dugout. He has looked at strike 3. 2 gone in the seventh inning.
- 1:56:58Veteran Doug Harvey working beyond the plate. Not only a fine umpire and a good daugher, but he's a pretty good collector of rare books. Gene Clines 0-3 stepping in.
- 1:57:12Slide to left to right and in between he's looked at strike 3. It's all be Yvonne's sidearm curve and he misses low and away. Slow twister. Ball 1 to Clines.
- 1:57:28Breeze today coming straight in from center field at about 15, 16 miles an hour. Here's the wind up of the pitch. Swung out of it. Yes, as he took a rip at that one it broke down sharply. Ball 1, strike 1.
- 1:57:48In addition to three wins, Tacoby has three saves this year. Sidearm fastball, a little low. Ball 2, strike 1. Looked like he's just straight up and down.
- 1:58:05The wind up 2-1 delivery. Line swings and he bounces it foul. That's the third base side. Goes into the cut dugout. At the end of it, three of them aces kind of sitting together.
- 1:58:21Some of the fellows with the warm windbreakers down because that wind coming in. It's a bit on the chilly side if you're out of the sunshine. Dobby with a new ball. Here's down again.
- 1:58:35Here's the wind up 2-2 pitch. Swung out of it and he chased a bad one that time. The ball went outside but he couldn't hold up. A pause for station identification. This is the WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network. 80 degrees officially in Chicago at 3.30. This is WGN Radio Chicago.
- 1:58:56Kemp Tacoby perfect strikes out two men. At the end of the seventh at Wrigley Field is still the Chicago Cubs three, the Pittsburgh Pirates two.

- 2:00:14Bill Bottom, the face of two, three and four men in the pirate batting order here in the eighth inning. He's got his work cut out for him.
- 2:00:25Daveris, a right-hander to be followed by three lefties if we have to go that far. Dave Parker, Al Oliver and Willie Starko.
- 2:00:35Daveris was hit by the first pitch throw in the sixth inning. No second but then was out on interference. Ground ball to the shortstop to Hayses.
- 2:00:45Looked like he wanted to bunt. Got way out in front of the plate. The pitch was a strike call. He really didn't try to bunt on it.
- 2:00:50Wanted to see what Daveris' reaction was going to be.
- 2:01:00Wind up by Bottom. Tried to bunt the curve and he fouls it over against the wall on the first base right.
- 2:01:08He left the batter spot. He left it again. He's way, way out in front of that batter spot. The Nug Harvey has said that's where you were. You're out of it.
- 2:01:19And here's Stump Tenner coming to argue that Daveris putting on one of his plays. Flaps the helmet down. Kicks the bat. Now kicks jerk on home plate.
- 2:01:30And he is not very far away from being thrown out of this game.
- 2:01:34Now, he's putting on a more of a display with his gestures. He is flaming of course. He had a foot in the batter spot.
- 2:01:48Now, Harvey is denying it. Stump Tenner and on his end is pretty disgusted.
- 2:01:53I tell you, if Harvey saw him throw that helmet, he would have been out.
- 2:01:57Or Ryerson saw it. Throwed it cross for the third and they were coming in.
- 2:02:01He also kicked that dust on the plate too, Lou. But apparently, throwing a helmet is automatic.
- 2:02:08He's gone. Kicking the dust on the plate except for the up-fired gutter.
- 2:02:15But Harvey didn't see it.
- 2:02:19The young up-fired on his third is Jerry Crawford.
- 2:02:23Fire record, the veteran up-fired at first base.
- 2:02:26Apparently, just didn't see it. Now, as they all went back to the dugout, Tenner comes out again.
- 2:02:32He said, die, die, die. I'm going to talk to you again, Mr. Harvey.
- 2:02:40I'll bet you Tenner's thinking about a protest, asking for an appeal, and Harvey did not take it.
- 2:02:48He would not ask the third base up-fire.
- 2:02:55He doesn't have to go to another man. No.
- 2:02:59He just, when up-fires do that, when a manager asks for an appeal, it's just a courtesy procedure.
- 2:03:05But they don't have to. If he says he saw it, he doesn't need any help. That's it. Period.
- 2:03:13So credit Tenner all with a put-out, as Taveras got out of the batter's box in an attempt to butt.
- 2:03:20Here's a swing and a ground ball. One hopper to third.
- 2:03:23On Taveras has it. Parker is out of there.
- 2:03:31One hopper off the bat of Dave Parker. So he is 0 for 4 today.
- 2:03:38We've had two calls here a little bit on the weird side today.
- 2:03:42With Taveras on its second base after being hit by a pitch and stealing second on a pitch-off.
- 2:03:50Parker is mad, hit a ground ball.
- 2:03:53Here's a swing and a bouncing ball of the pitch's body. He's just charging in, loves it, throws it around.
- 2:03:57Beautiful play. He's got it. Oh man, that's going to be the fastest inning of the day.
- 2:04:054-6. They're out of there.
- 2:04:09Now the other one, where Yvonne wanted to come in to make the play, Taveras, not in his way, had to push him out of the way.
- 2:04:15That was interference.
- 2:04:18And Parker, able to reach on a field of choice here in the eighth.
- 2:04:22It's 1-2-3 before you conflict your eyes.
- 2:04:27As the Cubs come to bat in the bottom of the eighth inning, still leading the Pirates 3-2.
- 2:04:35Hello, General Finance, Friendly Bomb Adams speaking.
- 2:04:38Hi Bob, is it true that you can arrange a loan for any good reason?
- 2:04:42Well, yes, generally.
- 2:04:44Well, is love a good reason?
- 2:04:46Uh, who is this?
- 2:04:48I put it this way, I really don't need it, but I told him I was in the store to buy it.
- 2:04:53I don't think I understand, are you talking about love?
- 2:04:56Oh no, no wardrobe.
- 2:04:57I know I don't understand.
- 2:04:59Bob, he's the store manager and I really came in to sneak a peek at him. Oh, he's so beautiful, I think I'm really in love with him.
- 2:05:05Oh, I see.
- 2:05:06Well, when he asked, can I help you, I just blurted out I want a new one.
- 2:05:10A new what?
- 2:05:11That's what he asked, so I said everything.
- 2:05:13Everything?
- 2:05:14A whole new wardrobe.
- 2:05:15Oh, now I get it.
- 2:05:16That's what he expects me to do, so is it alright, Bob?
- 2:05:18Is what alright?
- 2:05:19A loan for love.
- 2:05:20We can just say it's a loan for a new wardrobe.
- 2:05:23Oh, thanks Bob, thanks for the help.
- 2:05:25You can always get a little help from a friend at General Finance.
- 2:05:30Over 65 General Finance offices in the Chicagoland area, tomorrow up to $10,000.
- 2:05:37Tomorrow and over 3, 2, 0, 2, 0. Also an office in Naperville.
- 2:05:43Elk DeBarris, earlier in this ball game, tried to bunt and he was way out in front of the plate on that one and it hit him.
- 2:05:54Then rolled out the rest of the way and he was out on that one.
- 2:05:58He ran into his own bunted ball out in fair territory.
- 2:06:06He would have been out I think on that play anyway, but he was called out with a put out going to the catcher.
- 2:06:12He gets out of that batter's box.
- 2:06:16He's going to bunt with his front foot way out in front and then he's almost like a left handed batter trying to drag bunt one.
- 2:06:25When you're getting out of that batter's box with a right hander, your tendency is you want to start down to first base and you wind up out of the batter's box.
- 2:06:34Now we have a new pitcher, Terry Forster, wanted to do the Chuck Tanner hand with his white socks pitching staff.
- 2:06:42While Forster had a tightness in the forearm of his left arm, his pitching arm this year, he's worked out of that and he's been coming along very well.
- 2:06:54Fires the first pitch to Bittner and it's a strike.
- 2:07:00Shot ball winds, fast ball, strike ball in the outside corner.
- 2:07:05Forster is healthy. This guy can fire the ball.
- 2:07:11Tanner says in his last couple of outings he has just been super.
- 2:07:15Wind up with a big guy, swing and a drive into left field.
- 2:07:20In there for a base hit.
- 2:07:22Pick up way over in the left center by the screening Omar Marino and Bittner opens up the bottom of the eighth with an opposite field single after he was in the hole nothing and two.
- 2:07:40Terry Forster elected not to waste one.
- 2:07:43Here's Bobby Mercer, a Forster in here because you have Bittner and Mercer, two left handers leading off the inning.
- 2:07:50Forster has raced in Mercer who holdered off.
- 2:07:55Canvallaria in the sixth inning steps in.
- 2:08:04Here's the pitch, fast ball. Bobby takes the strike right at the knee.
- 2:08:14Five, five of Mercer's, seven homers this year have come off left handers.
- 2:08:19Oh one pitch, where's the way, he's got a button and he pops it foul into the space in the first base side. I've never seen Mercer try to button before.
- 2:08:33He won't try it again, the count on him is on two.
- 2:08:42Forster now with eight hits for the day. Bottom has issued only five.
- 2:08:49Forster, big guy.
- 2:08:52Dargo playing about five, six feet off the bag at first in front of the runner.
- 2:08:56Edges back a step or so, Forster steps off the pitching rubber.
- 2:09:01He's got a right hander throwing into bullpen.
- 2:09:04One run lead, would like to increase it, here's the side arm fast ball, he takes it outside, one and two.
- 2:09:12And against a left hander like that who comes in almost side arm to him, Mercer holds his ground well.
- 2:09:17He doesn't push or get out of the way. He's right in there.
- 2:09:23Forster ready. Here is kick over the top and that one's too high, two and two.
- 2:09:30Rookie in the bullpen, Odell Jones, he's been warming up earlier today.
- 2:09:47Nobody out, runner at first to pitch, Mercer swings, he got him.
- 2:09:56He's got a rebound for Jerry Forster. Wings up Jerry Morata, who's having a perfect day at the plate.
- 2:10:02He's blocked, singles, doubles, throw it in a rush.
- 2:10:18Here's the pitch and Morata takes the fast ball high, ball one.
- 2:10:26The Cubs today drawing 14,593 paves.
- 2:10:32Rookie in the bullpen, Odell Jones, he's been warming up earlier today.
- 2:10:41Nobody out, runner at first to pitch, Mercer swings, he got him.
- 2:10:50Strike out for Jerry Forster. Wings up Jerry Morata, who's having a perfect day at the plate.
- 2:10:57He's got a rebound for Jerry Morata, who's having a perfect day at the plate.
- 2:11:12Attendance figures just being given, we'll relay them to you. Here's the pitch and Morata takes the fast ball high, ball one. The Cubs today drawing 14,593 paves.
- 2:11:30They've got over the 230,000 mark and paid attendance for the year at home and this is their 21st home date. Fast ball, Forster misses to Morata, Southside 2-0.
- 2:11:45They're up about 23,000 behind the attendance of last year with the same number of home dates. But it'll pick up the viral on Sunday, I guarantee you.
- 2:12:00Two world deliveries, Morata swings, high ball, right center field, Parker at the dead line. He'll not get through it.
- 2:12:16That's Jerry Morata, his third plate hit of the bottom man. He has counted in his 26th run of the year.
- 2:12:42That will be all for Terry Forster. A twingle to Better. He struck out Bobby Mercer. But Jerry Morata now has a twingle, a double, and a triple in that order.
- 2:12:58He is having a perfect day. And a rookie right-hander, Odell Jones, is going to be the fourth pirate pitcher of the ball game. But the score, 42 flavors of Cubs, bottom of the eighth inning, one out of run return.
- 2:13:14We have a delay in the action. Let's take time out for this message.
- 2:13:18Fans, when you think about it, signs are important to the ebb and flow of any baseball game. There's a sign for hit and run, signs to steal, but, and a whole lot more to remember.
- 2:13:29Now when it comes to the ebb and flow of beer drinking, there's only one sign you have to remember. And that's the sign on bottles or cans of Heilman's Old Style.
- 2:13:40What gives this beer its great light flavor? Well, Old Style is brewed in God's country, where the skies are clear, the air is clean and crisp, and the sparkling pure Wisconsin spring water flows from deep beneath the ground.
- 2:13:56Some folks say all the way from Canada. With water like this, when you brew a beer once, you've got a good beer. But when you brew a beer twice, you've got a great light beer.
- 2:14:08This double brewing, pure brewing process is called croisoning. It's the most natural way to brew beer and the most expensive. Try Old Style, pure brewed, in God's country.
- 2:14:32Manny Treo is going to step in against the rookie right-hander, Odell Jones.
- 2:14:39One-on-one for the air with a higher in front of him, 6.75, this is his eighth appearance.
- 2:14:45Worked 10 and two-thirds innings, and Manny Treo with the pirate infield in on the grass, takes his fastball for a ball outside.
- 2:14:55This guy looks like he hasn't had a square meal though in a month.
- 2:15:021-0 pitch, slug out of it.
- 2:15:12Manny, over to the fourth, that gave the cups a 2-1 lead. Let me tell you, he hammered it right into the wind.
- 2:15:20The pitch takes a pretty good cut at a fastball, fouls it upstairs, out of play to the right.
- 2:15:28Jerry Morales has walked, single, doubled, and tripled in that order, and he's now a 286 hitter as he stands over his third, not tripled his first of the year.
- 2:15:391-2 pitch, Manny's flanks with the high, fly ball to Punter in right field. He circles, he gets under it on the run, Ramos tags, and he better get back.
- 2:15:50Throw to the catcher to iron, only would have had him maybe by 40 feet. He's gone.
- 2:16:10We know it is his first of the year. They say that that's Manny's, or Morales' first triple since October of 1974 when he hit one against these pirates.
- 2:16:24I think that was over there on the artificial surface.
- 2:16:31Couldn't believe he didn't have one all last year. He started today hitting 269, and that's showing now hitting 286.
- 2:16:41Steve Ranavers is going to be put on intentionally.
- 2:16:49He's left handed, of course, which is what he would do. George Punterwald is going to be the next hitter following this intentional walk.
- 2:17:04Mercer, after the pirates tied it up, hit a homer off Candelaria to the right field. That gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead.
- 2:17:15Here, Occhari Forster is single by Bittner.
- 2:17:20Bobby Mercer then struck out, but Morales hit a triple in the right center field, driving in Bittner.
- 2:17:27And Treo, wide out into shadow right field, a parker. Morales holding, and Odaveras just receives an intentional walk from the rookie O'Dell Jones.
- 2:17:41George Punterwald didn't have much luck against Candelaria.
- 2:17:46Wide to right, rounded out, wide to left, 0-3 for the day, steps in, and the infield drops back.
- 2:17:55Dugard, Cubs with a 4-2 lead in the eighth, here's the pitch.
- 2:17:59Fastball in too tight.
- 2:18:02Sky Lue looks like he's got a real good arm, doesn't he?
- 2:18:04Yes, he has. This is only his third major league game.
- 2:18:09Janor likes him. He says he's got a good live fastball.
- 2:18:181-0 delivery.
- 2:18:20Checks his swing. It's up a little high, and he held up in time, 2-0.
- 2:18:29I thought they showed him having been in seven games.
- 2:18:40No deference, he's a rookie. 2-0 pitch.
- 2:18:44He was overanxious, and he went after one down and away.
- 2:18:48Well, she can't blame him. The pitcher bottomed him up next.
- 2:18:52Minnowald wants to take his cuts. I was looking at their press book and not their staff.
- 2:19:00There's a curve blown outside, 3-1.
- 2:19:05He started this year with only two major league games, and he's been in several this year already.
- 2:19:15Try to find their stats, and that's a Chinese puzzle too.
- 2:19:193-1 pitch. Look, he almost got hit by a fastball. That's ball four.
- 2:19:26The Flyers are the only team that I know of.
- 2:19:32Hey, Bonham. Bonham is one of the lefties.
- 2:19:38For the first-getter.
- 2:19:43With the base is loaded.
- 2:19:46He's got to get a standing ovation when you're taken out of the ballgame for a pitch hitter.
- 2:19:51They deserved it. He has pitched fervently.
- 2:19:55But Herman Franks, with the bases jammed here in the eighth inning and a two-run lead,
- 2:20:00knows that Bonham has gone hard. I don't know how many pitches he's thrown though,
- 2:20:04but he has been a very tough performer today, and it's been a kind of a ballgame where he's had to keep bearing down all the time.
- 2:20:12Brother, when you've got a fellow like Suter, why gamble? You're taking a chance.
- 2:20:16Even if we lose the ballgame, the percentages certainly say, go with Suter for one inning.
- 2:20:23Buckner is going to bat for him, and Buckner, as a French hitter,
- 2:20:29has called upon seven times as three hits and three runs butted in.
- 2:20:35I love this Pirate stat sheet. Neither they list them alphabetically, every club does.
- 2:20:42That's the way most of them do, because that's the easiest way to find them.
- 2:20:46But you have to know the Pirate uniform numbers to find out where their guys are.
- 2:20:54If you tried to do that with every ball club, you'd really be in trouble.
- 2:20:59Now the windup with the bases jammed, and Buckner is going to take the first pitch as a strike, a fastball.
- 2:21:09A four-to-two lead.
- 2:21:14And the victory moves the Cubs to within a half game of the Pirates' 0-1 delivery.
- 2:21:19Buckner swings, ground ball, into the glove of Suter.
- 2:21:23The Cubs are going to hand pass to the pitcher covering, and Buckner just missed, pulling one through the right side of the infield.
- 2:21:31The Cubs in the eighth inning pick up a run on two hits, two walks, one of them intentional.
- 2:21:38The bases left-motored, and at the end of it, Pirates come to bat.
- 2:21:44It'll be startle, stunted, and corner, and we hope that's all.
- 2:21:47The Chicago Cubs four, the Pittsburgh Pirates two.
- 2:21:53Think you could eat 40 bananas in 39 minutes? Anthony Fick did it.
- 2:21:59He set that record in 1967. Says so right here in the Guinness Book of World Records.
- 2:22:05How could anyone eat so much so fast?
- 2:22:08This is Mike Pyle saying we'll probably never know the answer to that, but there are some records that are easily explained.
- 2:22:15For instance, the current record for selling new Oldsmobiles.
- 2:22:18It's held by Weill Olds in Libertyville.
- 2:22:21Weill sells more New Oldsmobiles than any other dealer in the world.
- 2:22:25Why? Why do people come from Chicago, from all over the state, even from neighboring states, to buy their New Oldsmobiles from Weill?
- 2:22:33You won't find the answer in the record book, but you will find it in Libertyville, Illinois, home of the world's largest Oldsmobile dealer, Weill Olds.
- 2:22:42Plan to drive out real soon. You'll probably get out to Libertyville faster than it takes Anthony Fick to eat 40 bananas.
- 2:22:50With all the cars they're taking in trade, Weill Olds has become a used car shopper's paradise.
- 2:22:58We should have let the boss do that one, don't you think?
- 2:23:01I don't know why not.
- 2:23:03Do you want to do that?
- 2:23:05He's on a holiday.
- 2:23:07He charged us, wouldn't he?
- 2:23:11We'll charge him if he does it again.
- 2:23:14Irwin Weill, Weill the boss man out at Weill Olds in Libertyville out here today, and he hasn't moved a muscle now since the gums took the lead.
- 2:23:24Not that he's superstitious.
- 2:23:27He doesn't have a muscle to move.
- 2:23:35You don't fall on a plantation straw hat, do you?
- 2:23:39It's not a plantation straw.
- 2:23:46Irwin's a fellow who was at Red Claw's back with this winter.
- 2:23:50He decided he wanted Ernie Banks' bet, and the auctioning got to be pretty high.
- 2:23:55Irwin just thought he'd silence everybody.
- 2:23:59All he did was they did $800 for it, and he got it.
- 2:24:04He could have gotten a suit of clothes with it, too.
- 2:24:14What a premiere of relief pitchers in the business.
- 2:24:18Bruce Tudor.
- 2:24:20See if he can hold on to the wind for Bill Bottom, who worked eight strong innings.
- 2:24:26Right-handed delivers, and Stachel takes it to ball a little bit low.
- 2:24:30Stachel, Stinnett, and Garter.
- 2:24:34Stachel, of course, will let me.
- 2:24:37As the swing and he fouls, that went out of play to the left side.
- 2:24:40He looked like he had himself a home run in the fourth inning.
- 2:24:44He had a shot to let field, and for all the world, it looked like it had to go into the seats, but the wind pushed it back in.
- 2:24:52It was caught by Gene Clines.
- 2:24:54Wind could not hold, and he treals shot in.
- 2:24:57It went into the bleachers in there.
- 2:25:00There's a ball a little low on the fork ball, two and one.
- 2:25:07Stachel was walked intentionally in the sixth inning, and when he stinted a blight,
- 2:25:11the Cubs, by bouncing out to one of errors, had retired the side.
- 2:25:17Stachel was robbed by Jerry Morales of an extra base hit.
- 2:25:22His first time at bat today. Good running catch on him.
- 2:25:25There's the fork ball. It's a little bit low. Three and one.
- 2:25:33Even though the wind is blowing in, everybody is keeping the outfield.
- 2:25:36Here's the pitch. Run out of good fastball. Bounces fouled into the seats in the first base side.
- 2:25:41Ball three, he's strike two.
- 2:25:43In case you've forgotten, Bruce Suter's earned run average, a cluttering 0.73.
- 2:25:53Three-two pitch. What a catch, Stachel took.
- 2:25:57What a catch, Stachel took.
- 2:25:59He got him with a beautiful front ball.
- 2:26:06What a cut, Stachel took.
- 2:26:08That for Suter is 39 strikeouts this year in 37 and a third innings.
- 2:26:18He has walked only two minutes.
- 2:26:2239 strikeouts.
- 2:26:24When he stinted a right hander steps in, swung on.
- 2:26:28Ground ball, he hits the play over on the third base side and the ball hit normally where I thought it would be.
- 2:26:38So it's in the base hit.
- 2:26:40I'm surprised that he's playing him that far over, though.
- 2:26:43I think this is the first time in this ball game that he's played to stint it that far over to the left.
- 2:26:52He probably figures that Suter with that fork ball will make him hit the ball on the ground and will pull it.
- 2:27:02The other pirates have a potential tying run at the plate in the version of Bill Garner.
- 2:27:10That for any stint, it's his third hit today.
- 2:27:12Remember when he had seven out here one day last year?
- 2:27:16There's a strike called on Garner.
- 2:27:20He's one for three today and a single drove and a run in the second inning.
- 2:27:24Armahawk one day.
- 2:27:27There's a swing and a miss.
- 2:27:30Nothing and two.
- 2:27:33And Suter kept that one just above the knees and the right-hander hitting Garner.
- 2:27:39Four to two score. Comes out in front.
- 2:27:42And Suter trying to hold onto it.
- 2:27:46Right hander ready.
- 2:27:48Pitch. Garner swings. He got a piece of it.
- 2:27:50Drops it back foul. Nothing and two yet.
- 2:27:58Cleo and Mercer have homeored today.
- 2:28:01Gary Morales now playing in deep center field.
- 2:28:04A walk, a single, a double, a triple in that order.
- 2:28:07And he's batted in two with a four-cup run and made a very fine catch.
- 2:28:12Suter ready. Oh, two pitch.
- 2:28:13Garner takes a look out.
- 2:28:15There's one that into the dirt and bounces all the way back up high under the screen.
- 2:28:22That will be a wild pitch.
- 2:28:26Now they have a man in scoring position.
- 2:28:30What it does is pretty much eliminate the possibility of a double play.
- 2:28:40Go get him.
- 2:28:43Garner ready.
- 2:28:45Garner straight at the net. He got him.
- 2:28:49Got him with the ball inside court ball that time.
- 2:28:54Strike out, a single, a wild pitch. A strike out.
- 2:29:00Duffy Dyer is due to bat.
- 2:29:06Like Bill Robinson.
- 2:29:09Bill Robinson as a fin-getter this year, no hits in seven at bats.
- 2:29:17He is batting for Dyer.
- 2:29:22Walk once, a hit and run with a man out of the second inning.
- 2:29:26Dyer struck out and middle wall, perfect bag, nailed Garner for a double play.
- 2:29:34He forced Garner with his ground ball down to Baris in the seventh inning.
- 2:29:39And Urban Franks called with everybody around.
- 2:29:42I guess Louie wants to be sure they know how to pitch to this guy.
- 2:29:45This is true as a pitch-hitter.
- 2:29:47They've gone over the lineup of course and everybody earlier this morning.
- 2:29:52But by four o'clock perhaps they have forgotten this particular hitter and pitch-hitter.
- 2:30:00Everybody wants those infielders to play back and knock down this ball and also guard the line.
- 2:30:06We do not want this man to get a double.
- 2:30:09Bill Robinson, an awfully tough hitter.
- 2:30:12I said he's 0 for 7 as a pinch-hitter.
- 2:30:16He has 18 hits for the year and a.257 batting area.
- 2:30:20He's got power.
- 2:30:22He has two homers, 14 runs batted in.
- 2:30:29He's got the standard.
- 2:30:31Play first base, he can play the outfield.
- 2:30:33They're not happy at times because he hasn't been in the regular lineup.
- 2:30:36First pitch to him and Stutter fires a strike on the inside corner.
- 2:30:44Roderick second, ninth inning with Dugard.
- 2:30:46Cubs leading 4-2, Stutter into the stretch.
- 2:30:49Here it comes.
- 2:30:50Swung out a high fly ball, couldn't beat the ball game.
- 2:30:54He rides, says, I got it, baby.
- 2:30:59He's out.
- 2:31:00And the Cubs win.
- 2:31:08Zero bottom, the winning pitcher, blue-sitter getting a save.
- 2:31:12And the first of the three game set goes to the Chicago Cubs by a score of 4-2.
- 2:31:20In today's world of lead-free gasoline, responsibility to public need is as important as product quality.
- 2:31:28This commitment to meet the Midwest driving needs has made Amaco the lead-free leader.
- 2:31:33Now comes new Amaco premium lead-free, the higher octane lead-free gasoline.
- 2:31:39For cars old and new that need higher octane to run the way they should,
- 2:31:43Amaco premium lead-free has higher octane than typical unleaded gasoline.
- 2:31:49And it has higher octane than regular leaded gasoline as well.
- 2:31:53There are two ways to tell whether your car may need Amaco premium lead-free's higher octane.
- 2:31:59It may knock or theme when you accelerate, or it may run on after you turn off the key.
- 2:32:05If this sounds like your car, use new Amaco premium lead-free in the gold pump.
- 2:32:11If you don't have these problems, use lead-free Amaco in the blue pump, the Midwest best-selling lead-free.
- 2:32:18Now your independent standard oil dealer gives you this choice.
- 2:32:22You expect more from a leader.
- 2:32:26Well, before we give it a happy total, let's run down on this exciting ball game today.
- 2:32:35We've got to take time off for station identification.
- 2:32:37This is WGN Chicago Cubs baseball network.
- 2:32:41And this is WGN Radio Chicago. It's 4-0-1.
- 2:32:46All right. The Cubs four runs, nine hits, including a pair of homers, and a perfect day for Gary Morales.
- 2:32:59One error. Eight men left. The Pirates two runs, six hits. No errors. They left six men.
- 2:33:05And that tells you something about the Cubs pitching today.
- 2:33:08They left only six men straddle and had only six hits.
- 2:33:12Bill Bottom, the fur bait innings, earns his sixth win of the year.
- 2:33:17And Bruce Sutter, coming in to pitch the ninth inning, earns another save.
- 2:33:22How many does he have now? An even dozen.
- 2:33:27And John Candelaria, who'd come in here with the best-earned run average among the starting pitchers in the National League, 1.63,
- 2:33:37had been unbeaten, had never lost to the Cubs. He was 3-0 lifetime against the Cubs.
- 2:33:43He suffers his first loss of the season. Big young left-hander, now 6-1.
- 2:33:50Two hours and 27 minutes of real excitement, Luke.
- 2:33:55Well, it was a tremendous victory for the Cubs. And for the fans here, they actually saw everything that could happen,
- 2:34:02practically in a ball game. And you don't see a couple of plays called very often, even during the year.
- 2:34:10Very seldom will you see an interference call, and a man on second base with a ground ball get to the shortstop.
- 2:34:17Tavares stayed in front of DeJesus. And the rules state that you have to give that infielder an opportunity to feel the ball.
- 2:34:25He was called out on an interference call. Then, on an attempted bunt, Tavares was called out when he left the batter's box,
- 2:34:34according to Doug Harvey, in attempting to bunt the ball. And a hard ground ball through the pitcher's legs hits second base
- 2:34:43and bounces as high as that did. That's the worst of it.
- 2:34:46Why on earth? I think I've never seen it.
- 2:34:48Well, I told you the ball hit lighter this year. But that ball bounced way over Tavares' head.
- 2:34:56He caught it, and they threw out Bittner by a step and a half. Something that you never see.
- 2:35:02But when these two ball cubs get together, there's a lot of action, and all the action today was favorable.
- 2:35:09It was for the Cubs.
- 2:35:10Well, that ball, the one of Bittner's you're talking about, got by the pitcher. I called it a hit right away.
- 2:35:15Had to be.
- 2:35:16Yeah.
- 2:35:17Even if it hits the bag.
- 2:35:18Oh, yeah.
- 2:35:19I've been in this game, well, not as long as you, but the ball hits the bag.
- 2:35:24I've very often seen the ball bounce that high.
- 2:35:29That was wild.
- 2:35:30So it's livelier.
- 2:35:31And it did get a drop for sure of a run-by at the end, because right after that, he's done a home run over the right field wall.
- 2:35:39But that's all right. The Cubs went in 4-2.
- 2:35:42And there's not much breathing room now for the Pirates in this Eastern Division, because their lead over the Cubs has now shriveled to a mere half game.
- 2:35:54Let me tell you, for the Cubs, it's their 19th win in this month away. They've lost only five ball games.
- 2:36:02The Pittsburgh Pirates had come in here. They'd won 17 out of 22. So they now are 17-6. The Cubs, 19-5.
- 2:36:13Well, there should be a lot more excitement out here at Wrigley Field tomorrow. You say, yeah, how can there be any more than that?
- 2:36:19You never know. That's the great thing about baseball. And I hope that you're going to join us here tomorrow afternoon.
- 2:36:24We'll be back with a word about the pitching assignments and so forth and that one.
- 2:36:28Our broadcast today has been brought to us by the G. Hyllman Brewing Company from across Wisconsin, the makers of Old Style.
- 2:36:37The pure or brewed beer from Cots country, the old style, tasted good here today.

- 2:37:03And by fireside, Chrysler. Fireside, Chrysler Plymouth, Mazda, located in Gulf Road, just west of Route 53.
- 2:37:11And the Woodfield Shopping Center.
- 2:37:15Tomorrow at our day at Wrigley Field, Rick Rushell is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Cubs.
- 2:37:23Big right-hander now with a record of six wins, two losses.
- 2:37:28And his mound opponent, left-hander Jim Rooker, who has won four and lost two for the Bucks.
- 2:37:34Morales a perfect day at the plate. A walk, a single, a double, a triple in that order.
- 2:37:40Maybe he can pick up tomorrow with a home run. He's first out at bat, huh?
- 2:37:43And hit for the cycle in two days. He drove in a pair of runs, three of a home run for the Cubs today, as did Bobby Mercer.
- 2:37:50Bottom earning of victory is sixth of the year, and Candelaria is a loser.
- 2:37:54Vince Lloyd and Lou Boudreau, hope you enjoyed the broadcast. I know we enjoyed bringing it to you.
- 2:38:00Jack Minimanjur, producer, Al Aldrich, a Ringenier. The Cubs again a winner, four to two. This is the WGN Chicago Cubs Baseball Network.
