- 0:00What if the guilt you've been carrying is only half the story?
- 0:06My name is Esther. I coach people in Switzerland,
- 0:10and I used to call myself a bad mother.
- 0:15Today, I want to show you why that story was only half the
- 0:21truth. Hello, beautiful soul.
- 0:25Welcome back. Today I want to talk about
- 0:29something that lives quietly in so many of us, Something we
- 0:36don't always say out loud. Regret.
- 0:41Not the dramatic kind. Not the life ruining kind.
- 0:47The soft, aching kind. The kind that shows up on a
- 0:53quiet evening when you're looking at old pictures.
- 0:59The kind that whispers I wish I had been there more.
- 1:07And maybe for you, it's your children.
- 1:11Maybe it's a parent, a sibling, a friendship that slowly faded
- 1:19because life got too loud. Whatever it is, I want you to
- 1:26know you are not alone in this. Today I'm going to share
- 1:33something very personal with you, something I haven't always
- 1:39found easy to say. And then I'm going to offer you
- 1:44a way through it. Not around it, through it.
- 1:50Because that's where the healing is.
- 1:55So take a breath, get comfortable, and let's go there
- 2:01together. A few years ago, I started
- 2:06looking back at my son's childhood, MY2 boys, my greatest
- 2:12teachers, and what I saw. It was beautiful in many places,
- 2:20but in some places it was hard to look at.
- 2:25I've remembered moments I wasn't there.
- 2:29Birthdays the Arabelli Klum took.
- 2:34If you're not Swiss, that's this magical Lantern parade the
- 2:41children do in autumn. The kids walk through the
- 2:45streets holding their little carved turnip lanterns, and
- 2:51parents walk alongside them in the dark.
- 2:56It's one of those moments that seems small, but it stays with
- 3:02you forever. I wasn't always there.
- 3:08I chose yoga over the school event one evening because the
- 3:14small talk, the noise, the cows it, it exhausted me and I knew,
- 3:23I knew that yoga would bring me back to myself.
- 3:29I went on the company retreat to Germany instead of celebrating
- 3:35my son's birthday at home. And for a long time I carried
- 3:42this guilt like a stone in my chest.
- 3:46I told myself, what kind of mother does that?
- 3:52I called myself selfish, egotistic.
- 3:56Not enough. But here's what I know now.
- 4:02That woman, the one who went to yoga, the one who boarded that
- 4:09plane to Germany, she wasn't abandoning her children.
- 4:15She was desperately trying to find herself.
- 4:20She was in the middle of a transition that was breaking her
- 4:24open. She had left the identity of the
- 4:29stay at home mother. She was becoming something new.
- 4:34And that process, it wasn't graceful, it was raw.
- 4:40It was painful and sometimes it meant she wasn't at the Lantern
- 4:47parade. That doesn't make her a bad
- 4:50mother. That makes her human.
- 4:55But I also want to tell you this because we so often only see one
- 5:02side of ourselves when we are in shame.
- 5:06I remember the meetings with the teachers and the therapist for
- 5:12my older son. There were difficult times,
- 5:17moments where I had to fight for him, and I showed up.
- 5:23I showed up like a lioness. I set across from all those
- 5:29teachers. I built a bond with a therapist.
- 5:34I fought quietly, fiercely, with love for what my son needed, and
- 5:43I am proud of that woman, too. She was there, she was present,
- 5:50she was brave. The same woman who missed the
- 5:55Lantern parade also fought in that room like her child's
- 6:01future depended on it. Because it did.
- 6:07We are never just one version of ourselves.
- 6:11We are never only the regrets. We are also the moments where we
- 6:18showed up exactly right, even when nobody was watching, even
- 6:26when it cost us something. Do you hear that?
- 6:30You are not just your failures, you are also your fears.
- 6:37Quiet victories. Something shifted in me over the
- 6:44past few years. Gradually, gently, the way real
- 6:50change always happens, I started showing up differently.
- 6:57My younger son did his military service mandatory in
- 7:02Switzerland, and every time he needed a lift to come home to
- 7:08get back to the base, I was there every single time.
- 7:15And here's the thing, I didn't do it out of guilt.
- 7:20I didn't do it to make up for lost time.
- 7:25I did it because I wanted to. Because those 30 minutes in the
- 7:31car, just the two of us driving through the dark or the morning
- 7:38light, they were gold. I got to hear what he was going
- 7:44through, what he was feeling, what military life was teaching
- 7:50him about himself. 30 minutes, just all it took.
- 7:57That was my younger son. And then one day I came home and
- 8:03there were lilies on the kitchen table.
- 8:06Just lilies left quietly, no notes needed.
- 8:12The first time my elder son had ever done something like that, I
- 8:20stood there in my kitchen and I cried because those flowers,
- 8:25branches, flowers, they were a message.
- 8:30I feel you, I see you. You are here with me now, and
- 8:36that moment, that small, soft, extraordinary moment, it told me
- 8:43that something had healed. In my elder son, in me, in US.
- 8:52You can never go back, but you can always start now.
- 8:58So what do you do when the regret comes first?
- 9:05Let yourself feel it, don't push it away, don't justify it
- 9:11immediately, just sit with it for a moment because regret,
- 9:18when you really listen to it, it's not your enemy, it's a
- 9:24signal. It is your heart Saying this
- 9:29mattered to me and that is beautiful.
- 9:33Not painful, beautiful. It means you laugh deeply.
- 9:41Second, ask yourself this question, not why did I do that?
- 9:48Because that leads you straight back into shame.
- 9:53Ask instead, what was I carrying then?
- 10:00What was happening inside you during those years?
- 10:05What were you struggling with? What were you trying to become
- 10:11or survive or understand about yourself?
- 10:17Have compassion for that version of you.
- 10:21She was doing her best with what she had.
- 10:26You cannot pour from an empty cup.
- 10:30And if you were depleted, if you were in the middle of rebuilding
- 10:36your identity, fighting for your mental health, trying to stay
- 10:42afloat, then choosing yoga over the Lantern parade wasn't
- 10:49selfish. It was survival.
- 10:53And survival is not something to be ashamed of.
- 10:59Third, act now. Not from guilt.
- 11:04From love. The difference matters.
- 11:08When you act from guilt, you give something hollow.
- 11:13When you act from love, even a small gesture carries
- 11:19everything. A car ride, a phone call,
- 11:24staying up late because someone needs you, Sitting in silence
- 11:30beside a parent who is becoming more fragile, bringing flowers,
- 11:37sending a voice message that says nothing important and
- 11:43everything real. These small things, they are not
- 11:48small. They are everything.
- 11:52And 4th, remember this. The people who love you are not
- 11:59keeping score. They don't have a spreadsheet of
- 12:04your absences. What they remember is how you
- 12:09made them feel over the whole course of a life.
- 12:15Not one missed birthday, not one Lantern parade.
- 12:20The whole of you, the whole of your love.
- 12:26I want to say something directly to you.
- 12:32If you have been carrying guilt about time you didn't spend with
- 12:38someone you love, put it down. Not because it doesn't matter,
- 12:44but because keeping it doesn't help them.
- 12:49It only keeps you frozen in the past, and the people who love
- 12:55you need you in the present, alive, present, real.
- 13:02The most loving thing you can do with your regret is to let it
- 13:08transform you, not define you. Let it make you softer, Let it
- 13:15make you more present. Let it crack you open just
- 13:21enough for more love to come through.
- 13:25You're not your worst moments. You are the sum of all your
- 13:31love, every drop of it. Even the awkward, imperfect,
- 13:38beautifully human love that missed some birthday parties.
- 13:46I hope today's episode reached you somewhere real.
- 13:51I hope it gave you permission to be human, to have been
- 13:57imperfect, and to begin again today, tonight, in the next
- 14:04conversation you have with someone who matters to you.
- 14:09You don't need a grand gesture. You just need to show up with
- 14:17honesty, with presence, with love.
- 14:22That is more than enough. That is everything.
- 14:29We don't get to rewrite the past, but every single day we
- 14:35get to write the next line of the story.
- 14:40And that line, that one can be the most beautiful one.
- 14:49And if today's episode steered something in you that you'd like
- 14:55to explore more deeply, if there's a relationship, a
- 15:00regret, a conversation you've been avoiding, or a chapter of
- 15:07your life you haven't known how to close or begin, I want you to
- 15:13know that I'm here. Ioffer a free, no obligation
- 15:19coaching session. Just you and me.
- 15:23One hour, honest, warm, judgement free.
- 15:28We'll look at what's been waiting on you and we'll find a
- 15:33way forward together. Because you deserve that.
- 15:38You deserve to stop carrying what's no longer serves you.
- 15:44You can reach me through the link in the show notes or just
- 15:48send me a message. Tell me you heard this episode
- 15:54and we'll take it from there. Thank you for being here, for
- 15:59trusting me with your time, for choosing to grow.
- 16:05I love what we're building together.
- 16:09Until next time, be brave, be real, be you with all my heart
- 16:17from Switzerland.
