Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I want to take a few minutes to let you know about something really exciting that will be launching on November the first.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: This is a new podcast called The Daily Writer.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: And since you're already a listener to the Smart Business Writing podcast, I want to respect your time and attention and I want to give you a fun little sneak peek about what's coming in about a month.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: But before I do that, I want to say thank you.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: This podcast is nothing without your support and without you listening to it and in your encouragement and some of the notes that many of you send me.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I don't take any of that for granted.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Every single download represents an opportunity to impact someone's life, and I am truly grateful for that.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: So first and foremost, thank you.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: I appreciate you, and I'm so glad that you're listening to the show.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Now, let's talk about the pivot that I'll be making on November the 1st.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: I will be switching this podcast, the Smart Business Writing Podcast, to a show that's called The Daily Writer.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And let me give you some reasons why I'll be switching the show, what the new show is about, and what you can expect from it.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: First of all, I want to give you a little bit of background about why the show is the way it is and sort of where it came from because this helps, I think, set a helpful context for what is to come.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: So this podcast used to be called Born to Create, and it was a show all about creativity.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I love doing that show and I learned a lot from it, and the response was very good from it.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: However, the problem was that I always felt like it didn't have a super clear focus.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: So last year it was clear to me that I needed to focus on writing on my podcast, and I needed a really clear niche for that because let's face it, there's a ton of writing podcasts out there.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to do something very specific where I could add value in a specific way to people.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: And that's why I came up with this idea called smart business writing.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And the idea was to help businesses use writing to improve their communication and to improve their marketing with their customers and clients.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: And I think the show has been very successful, and I've been thrilled with the response to it.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And it has accomplished what I set out to do, which is to provide value to business leaders.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And by the way, if you're making money or if you want to make money, you have a business.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: This isn't a show necessarily for, you know, just like big corporate, uh, you know, big companies or big corporate types or uh things like that.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: This is a show for anybody who needs to use writing to help with their business.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: So if you're an author and you want to sell books, you have a business.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: If you are a copywriter and you're selling your services, if you're a ghostwriter, if you're doing any kind of business revolving around your writing, or if you're a business in general, you need to use writing to communicate with your customers and clients.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: Writing is simply a part of how we communicate and how we run a business.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: So in that sense, the show has been for everybody.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: That's what I set out to do on this podcast is to help businesses grow by writing better.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And I think I've accomplished that to some degree.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: But over the last few months, three things have become really clear to me, and they have shown me that I need to make a slight pivot with this podcast.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Here's the first thing more and more I believe that podcasting is the future of content marketing.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Audiobooks have exploded in popularity, and so has podcasting.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: People love audio, and I really want to lean more and more into podcasting, not do less of it.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So as time goes by, the more and more I really think podcasting is is super, super valuable.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: And in fact, this is the reason why I've been doing some of these short audio journal type episodes.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: These are really just an experiment to see if people like this short daily format.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And I've been wanting to move into a daily show for some time, but I haven't felt like smart business writing is really the right container for me to do a daily show in.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: I don't, I don't know that I have enough value to add in that kind of small niche of business writing for me to do a daily show.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: So this leads to the second reason that I'm making a pivot, which is that the people who respond most to this show are not really responding to the business focus, but they're responding to the writing focus.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: Now, if I do say so myself, if you'll permit me a moment of pride here, I think that business focused content has been very good on this show.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But what I constantly hear about is that the show is helping writers, not necessarily business leaders.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Now, again, there's tons of intersection there, there's tons of overlap, but I hear way more from people who are just doing writing as opposed to people who are using the show to help them with their business, if all that makes sense.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Now, again, of course, many of these writers are entrepreneurs, but the main feedback I'm getting is from writers who are trying to get their book finished or they want to build a business around their writing.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And more specifically, the number one problem that I hear about is that people have a hard time just getting the writing done.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And above all else, I hear that people want to write, but they're not finding the time to get it done.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: They're not getting the words down.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So lately I've become kind of obsessed with two statistics that I keep hearing.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: One is that eight out of ten people want to write a book.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's kind of on the front end of the writing process.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Eight out of ten people want to write a book.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And then on the other end of the process, 97% of people who start writing a book never finish it.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And so I've been asking myself the last couple months, why is that?
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Why why don't people take action on their writing dreams?
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: And whenever they do, why do the vast majority of people never finish their books?
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: So, in other words, if you're in the minority of people who actually start writing a book, why do so many of those people not actually finish it?
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: Now, this is not me being judgmental at all because I've done that myself.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And I'll confess to you, I've got uh a number of books on my hard drive that I have started, but I've never never finished.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And perhaps you've done that as well.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: Well, there are lots of podcasts and resources on publishing, marketing and making money from your books and things of that nature, and those are all really, really important.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: You've got to figure out how to market your writing and your books, you've got to know how to publish it and how to monetize it and all that stuff.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: But if you don't get the writing done in the first place, all the marketing and the publishing advice in the world is not going to help you.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: You've got to get the words down and you have to get the writing done.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: That's like the A number one priority is you have to actually get the writing done.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: And that's been a struggle for me and my life many, many times, and perhaps it's been a struggle for you as well.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: That is the number one problem I keep hearing about.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: So, with all the humility I can possibly muster, I want to see if I can help to solve this problem that plagues the vast majority of writers, which is they're just not getting their writing done.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: So, those are two major reasons why I want to make this pivot, but there's a third reason as well.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And before I tell you what it is, please understand that I've always committed to being honest with you as a listener of the show.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: The most valuable thing that I have to offer you is myself.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And I never want to do anything to break that trust with you.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: So in that spirit, I want to confess something to you.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And that is that I've always wanted to do a straight-up writing podcast.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I wanted to do a just a straight-up writing podcast several years ago, but in total honesty, I kind of felt like an impostor.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: I did not feel qualified to do a podcast on writing.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I mean, with so many other good podcasts on writing out there, what could I possibly have to offer that somebody more well-known or more successful than me could not offer?
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: So, again, just in a spirit of complete transparency, that's why I started a podcast on creativity.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Partly because I was too scared to do a podcast on writing.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Now, it's not like I said, well, I shouldn't do a writing podcast, so let me just kind of play around with this creativity podcast.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: It wasn't that way at all.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I was truly sincere about the creativity focus.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I love the topic of creativity.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: But partly the reason I did that is because I just didn't feel qualified in my own heart to do a strict writing-focused podcast.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: And to be, again, I guess this is like the uh confession booth podcast episode or something.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: This is also partly why I pivoted to smart business writing, is because I thought, well, I don't have to be a writing expert to do a niche show like this on something called smart business writing.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: I can talk about strategies and do more business-oriented things, you know, do some copywriting stuff and things like that.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: And in a way, I can sort of hide behind that.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And I don't have to put myself out there as someone who's doing a straight-up writing podcast.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: But what I discovered on the Born to Create podcast, as well as the Smart Business Writing Podcast, was that people responded most to the straight-up content about writing, the content about conquering your fear, being courageous, the content about systems and strategies for getting the writing done.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: So all of that has helped me to realize that I do have something to offer.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: And this led me to a decision to pivot this podcast, once again, to a show called The Daily Writer.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: So, in a sense, I'm trying to model for you the things that I want for you.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to model conquering my own fear and conquering a bit of my own imposter syndrome by putting a straight-up writing podcast out there.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: Now, before I get into what the new show is going to entail, let me be really clear about something because I think this is really, really important.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: What I'm doing by pivoting my podcast, not just once but twice, is generally a really, really horrible idea.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Every time you you have a podcast or you have some kind of content marketing that you're doing, whenever you make a branding change, you know, you're changing your title, you're changing the content a bit, you're changing the artwork.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: Anytime that you do that, you're going to lose some listeners.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: And honestly, you will probably lose trust with some people who've been along for the ride and and they feel kind of frustrated because now you're you're changing what that ride is.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: You're changing your show, or you're changing your blog or or whatever it is that you're doing.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And I and I don't blame those people.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: If you've been along the ride with somebody and suddenly they say, hey, we're we're changing what the ride is, you're gonna feel a little bit frustrated because you've kind of spent that time with them and you've put that trust in them, and now all of a sudden they're gonna be changing it.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: So again, generally, this is a bad idea, and I don't recommend that you do this.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Generally, if you start a podcast, you need to stick with what that is unless you have a super good reason for changing it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: In my case, I've done that not once, but actually twice.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: So don't necessarily follow my lead in doing this.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I may lose some listeners.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll lose you as a listener.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: I have no idea.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: But I do want to tell you in my heart, um, and I'm telling you, I 100% believe this.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: I think you're really gonna love this new show, which I'll talk about here in just a second.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: I am super, super pumped about it.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Honestly, it's gonna be a lot more work than this show is, and this show is frankly a lot of work to put together.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: But I am so excited about it, I'm so thrilled about it, uh, that I cannot wait to bring this to you.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Um, and as I'm recording this, it's gonna be like another month before I launch this show, almost another month.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: So I've got to wait another month to bring this to you.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: Um, I do want to say that I really considered doing two podcasts.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: I considered keeping this show, the Smart Business Writing Podcast, and then starting the Daily Writer Podcast as a whole different show.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: But then I thought, man, am I crazy?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: I can't keep up with two podcasts.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: I can barely keep up with one.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: So I decided just to pivot this show into something that I felt like the majority of my audience would really want, and a lot of other people would would benefit from as well.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: So, again, pivoting the title and the direction of your podcast is not something you should normally do, but I hope that you're gonna be along for the ride whenever the Daily Rider podcast launches on Sunday, November the 1st.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Now, let me get into a little bit of what you can expect from this new show.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: I'll go into more detail when the show launches, but for now, let me share with you uh what the show is gonna be about.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: This is again gonna be called the Daily Rider, and that that title, The Daily Writer, I chose that title very specifically because it has a double meaning.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: First of all, it's gonna be a daily show, seven days a week.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And Monday through Friday, it's going to be very short episodes, just a few minutes long, where I'm gonna share with you what you might call a meditation that will give you some kind of a spark in your writing journey.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: And these shorter episodes on weekdays will give you something to do or something to think about, and they are designed to motivate you and inspire you in your writing journey.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: And these will be kind of similar to the audio journal episodes that I'm putting out now, occasionally.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: On Saturdays, on the new show, we'll have an interview, just like I do now.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: And on Sundays, I will do a solo episode where I teach about something related to writing, or I do a QA segment, or uh perhaps do a book review, a book discussion.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Uh, those will be kind of an open format kind of a thing.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: But generally, that's going to be the flow of this new podcast.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: The audience for the Daily Writer Show will be pretty much the same as it is now.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: This will be for creative entrepreneurs who want direction, motivation, and wisdom for their writing journey.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And I define a creative entrepreneur as anyone who's building a business with their creativity.
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: So I believe that if you're a writer, you fall into this category because if you're writing, you should be building a business with your writing, whether that's by ghostwriting, freelance writing, writing novels, writing short stories, blogging, writing screenplays, video scripts, podcast scripts, or podcast show notes, or anything else that you're doing.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: In other words, the daily writer show will be for people who want to make money with their writing in some way or another, not just people who want to do writing as a hobby.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: If you do writing as a hobby and have no intention of making any income from your book, that's totally cool.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Um I definitely want you to be along for the ride, but just know that uh this show is primarily going to be geared toward people who are wanting to monetize their writing in some way or another.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: Money doesn't have to be your primary motivation, but I'm assuming that if you're writing, you would like to get compensated on some level for your writing.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Even if it's just using writing to support your business, or if it's just using writing to, you know, in your spare time write a novel or something like that, you're probably going to be selling that novel and not giving it away.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: So therefore, if you write a novel and you sell it, you do have a writing business.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: So I think part of part of this whole thing is that I want writers to begin thinking of themselves as business people.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: That is a major mindset shift that a lot of writers and a lot of creative types, creative types, frankly, really struggle with.
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: Is we have a hard time thinking of ourselves as business people and as entrepreneurs.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: But I feel like part of my part of my mission with all this is I want you to begin to think of yourself as a business person and to realize that it's good to make money.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Money is good.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: It's not that we do everything strictly for money, but money is definitely part of the equation because when we when we have resources, uh, when we have money to do things with, we can support other people.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: We can bless other people.
- 15:37SPEAKER_00: Um, we can focus on doing the things that we love whenever we're supported by our creative work and by our writing.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Now, let me say a couple more things before I begin to wrap up this episode.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: On the Daily Writer Podcast, we're going to focus on four key practices of a writer.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: These, and I'll these I'll start with the C.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: These are creativity, consistency, courage, and connection.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: And I have to be honest with you, I've spent a lot of time the last couple of months reflecting on what those practices should be.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: And I'll go into more detail about those whenever the podcast launches.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: But for now, I want to emphasize that we must have a writing practice.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: Again, I mentioned these key practices of a writer: creativity, consistency, courage, and connection.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: And when I talk about having a writing practice, that practice has a double meaning.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: First of all, writing is something that we practice.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: We do it repeatedly, and we do it intentionally with the goal of getting better.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: We never arrive at perfection.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: So writing is something that we're always practicing, we're always trying to get better.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: But second of all, when I talk about a writing practice, I also mean that we have a writing practice in the sense that we approach our writing as a professional.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Just as a doctor can have a medical practice or an attorney can have a legal practice, you can have a writing practice.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: That means this means that we show up consistently, we have goals, and we approach what we do as professionals, and so on.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: So, all this gives you a glimpse, hopefully, into what the Daily Writer Podcast is going to be about.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: And again, this is going to be launching on Sunday, November the 1st.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: That will be the kickoff.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: And this is very much a thing where I'm not just killing the smart business writing podcast off.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: This is not a thing where I'm like, I hate this show and I really want to do this other show.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: This is a thing where I'm taking the good parts of this show, the things that I really feel like are working, and I'm going to expand those to focus on those elements that I'm really, really passionate about and that people have responded to.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited about this direction, and I have a really big vision for this.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to share all what that is right now.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Um, but as time goes by, over the next year or so, you'll begin to see more pieces of this.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's a lot of things I want to do with this.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Um, again, I have a really, really big vision for all this, and um, you're a part of this.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: You really are.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: This is not something where I'm just kind of sitting here at my microphone concocting these ideas and so forth.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: This is something that I need you to be a part of.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: This is not my thing.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: I mean, I'm the host of this show, I'm creating this content, but this is not about me.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: What this is all about is that I want to help to solve this problem of why people don't write, why they don't get it done, why they don't reach for their writing dreams.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: And when they do write, why don't they put it out there?
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: Why don't we have sometimes the courage to put our writing out there and to go for broke and to think big and to have a big vision?
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Why is it that we shrink back so often from doing the things that we really want to do?
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: For me, writing touches on all those things, which is which is why I'm excited about this.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: I'm so thankful for you, and I'm thankful for you being along for the ride for this.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: And uh, and you're a part of this vision.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: You're you're a part of helping to bring goodness into the world, to bring value into the world through your writing.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: So please don't underestimate your your ability to change lives with your writing.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: And I'm here, I'm here to help you to fulfill your vision for your writing.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: This is not about my vision.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: This is about what is your vision and how can I help you achieve your vision for your writing and how you want to impact the world through your writing.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: For now, the main thing I want to say is I'm really grateful for you as a listener, and I'm really looking forward to serving you in a deeper way with this Daily Writer Podcast again, which will be launching on Sunday, November the 1st.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: So be on the lookout for that.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: Thanks so much for listening, and I will see you in the next episode.
