Latest / Tech Trends Daily / Is the iPhone Duo screen failing? What to know
Transcript
- 0:00Some iPhone Duo owners found the inner screen
- 0:02broken within hours of unboxing and a few within
- 0:06minutes. This is Tech Trends Daily, one useful
- 0:09story, three minutes. Apple says only a small
- 0:13number of units are affected and tells owners
- 0:15to contact AppleCare for a replacement. Its statement
- 0:19stops short of promising a new device. The damage
- 0:21looks almost identical every time. Bright lines
- 0:24below the middle of the inner screen, running
- 0:26to the bottom and right edges. The only fix is
- 0:29a new panel, and ZDNET says most affected owners
- 0:33are being told a replacement won't arrive until
- 0:35January. So if you're about to pay $19 .99 or
- 0:39more for Apple's first foldable, what should
- 0:41you know? First, nobody knows the cause yet.
- 0:44Apple hasn't explained it, but iFixit took a
- 0:47duo part and ran CT scans. The failure starts
- 0:51just below where the ribbon cable passes through
- 0:53the hinge, which reportedly has more than 100
- 0:56components. Their best guess is a support bar
- 0:59that sticks and stresses the screen, but that's
- 1:02a guess, not a confirmed finding. Owners describe
- 1:06resistance when opening or closing the phone,
- 1:08and some heard clicking. Second, don't panic,
- 1:12but don't ignore it. ZDNET's Adrian Kingsley
- 1:16-Hughes found fewer than a dozen first -hand
- 1:18reports, even though hundreds of thousands of
- 1:20phones, maybe millions, are out there. He suspects
- 1:23a batch of defective hinges, which is his reading,
- 1:26not Apple's, CNET's folding machine had passed
- 1:3080 ,000 folds without a crack, and the fault
- 1:33shows up fast on affected phones. So surviving
- 1:36the first days is a good sign. Third, protect
- 1:39your exit. Buy directly from Apple if you can,
- 1:42because that comes with a 14 -day return window.
- 1:45With a carrier or retailer, read the return policy
- 1:49and look for restocking fees. Keep your current
- 1:52phone until the Duo passes its first week or
- 1:55two. If yours is already damaged, take photos,
- 1:59write down the timeline, and don't accept blame
- 2:02for damage you didn't cause. If you can wait
- 2:05for a replacement, ZDNET says you should. If
- 2:10you can't be without a phone until January, a
- 2:12refund may be easier. And ask whether Google's
- 2:16Pixel 11 Pro Fold at $1899 suits you better,
- 2:20since Engadget calls its cameras the best on
- 2:22any foldable. Here's the line to repeat to a
- 2:25friend. Before you buy a foldable, read the return
- 2:28terms and keep your old phone until the new one
- 2:30survives its first couple of weeks. The full
- 2:33article, with the comparison table, is linked
