- 0:03Speaker 1: If our fire island ferry Titanics tomorrow instead of that,
- 0:07Speaker 1: you know that the four the four piece orchestra that
- 0:11Speaker 1: was there, what what would be? There will be some
- 0:12Speaker 1: giy guy playing Charlie xax on his phone. Yeah, not
- 0:16Speaker 1: even with the speaker, and they'll be like, can you
- 0:19Speaker 1: scream a little quieter? We can't hear the song. Have
- 0:28Speaker 1: you ever wanted to talk like a man and spirit
- 0:32Speaker 1: like a man? I? Um, I assume you're referencing Titanic.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I didn't rewatch for this episode. I'm not gonna lie.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie to the virgin. You mean you
- 0:42Speaker 1: don't do a bi annual Titanic viewing like I do?
- 0:46Speaker 1: So do you mean bi annual in the twice year
- 0:49Speaker 1: since or in the every other year since? Because okay,
- 0:52Speaker 1: here the English language is insane and bi annual does
- 0:55Speaker 1: mean both? Isn't that so stupid? Well it means that
- 0:58Speaker 1: I'm by and I watch it in you elite. Oh
- 1:03Speaker 1: that's a really good um. Anyways, and virgins, in case
- 1:06Speaker 1: you haven't figured it out, um, and we did warn
- 1:09Speaker 1: you ahead of time. Today we are watching Titanic and
- 1:13Speaker 1: discussing all of the things that there are to discuss
- 1:17Speaker 1: about um what bros Will say is the greatest film
- 1:20Speaker 1: ever created. Yes, today we are revisiting James Cameron's flawed
- 1:28Speaker 1: but beautiful masterpiece Titanic. Uh, and we really have to
- 1:32Speaker 1: call it James Cameron's Titanic. I feel like we should
- 1:34Speaker 1: be erasing him at this point. I feel like it
- 1:37Speaker 1: should be erased. His dirty little fingerprints are all over
- 1:40Speaker 1: it and it would not be what it is without him.
- 1:43Speaker 1: And we are going to look back at Titanic and
- 1:47Speaker 1: talk about how it shaped us, how maybe some of
- 1:50Speaker 1: us crashed into it like an iceberg and it totally
- 1:53Speaker 1: changed the course of our lives. Because this is like
- 1:55Speaker 1: a virgin the show where we give yesterday's pop culture
- 1:58Speaker 1: today's takes. I'm Rose damn you, and I'm fran Toronto.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah he there's nothing effy epsing myself for this. I
- 2:14Speaker 1: have something really dark to admit, which is that I
- 2:19Speaker 1: did not leave my apartment this weekend. Not once did
- 2:22Speaker 1: you step out to get like a coffee or like
- 2:27Speaker 1: I stepped out to take trash to the dumpster. Otherwise
- 2:32Speaker 1: I did not leave my I didn't leave my apartment building.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I love that. Honestly, it's all about restoration here and
- 2:41Speaker 1: uh did you did you restore? What did you do? Well? What?
- 2:45Speaker 1: I The main reason is that I read um three
- 2:48Speaker 1: books this weekend. Oh so brag So I I just
- 2:56Speaker 1: got a kindle because I want one and Amazon day,
- 3:02Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, no, backup, back up, phoebe
- 3:06Speaker 1: take that out. We are not on this podcast anyway,
- 3:11Speaker 1: shouting out Amazon Day. I got it. I got an
- 3:17Speaker 1: unnamed electronic reader, um, and I read six books last week. Whoa,
- 3:25Speaker 1: I'm so jealous of your reading ability. You're reading. The
- 3:28Speaker 1: caveat is unmatched. The caveat is. They were all historical
- 3:34Speaker 1: gay romances, so you know they're they're quick reads. What
- 3:40Speaker 1: are were they lesbian romances? Where they was gonna they
- 3:44Speaker 1: were mm oh not mm so they can't even be
- 3:47Speaker 1: deemed bodice rippers. They're um like Cody rippers. Did we
- 3:53Speaker 1: just did we just invent that? Honestly, we're genius. Um. Well,
- 3:58Speaker 1: so I started reading one of them while we were
- 4:01Speaker 1: on vacation. You you have seen what is it called
- 4:05Speaker 1: The Soldier and Soldier Scoundrels, The Soldiers scoundrel So I
- 4:10Speaker 1: finished that and read the other two books in that series,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and then I read a series by this author whose
- 4:18Speaker 1: books I've read before. Their name is K. J. Charles,
- 4:21Speaker 1: and I read this series. Um, that's sort of like
- 4:24Speaker 1: it's called The Charm of Magpies and it's like historical
- 4:28Speaker 1: gay fantasy. I kind of needed it because I have
- 4:32Speaker 1: been writing a lot and reading a lot has been
- 4:34Speaker 1: really helpful to that process. And also I just like
- 4:37Speaker 1: wanted to read some gay, historical gay erotica. Love that
- 4:41Speaker 1: for you. I do think we should start like a
- 4:44Speaker 1: Virgin book club. I definitely I'm on a little reading
- 4:48Speaker 1: stint after a whole I mean, in June, I feel
- 4:51Speaker 1: like I didn't read at all. But on Fire Island
- 4:54Speaker 1: I did start to read the Death of a vic
- 4:56Speaker 1: O g by Equake, a messy who's like an amaze
- 5:00Speaker 1: author that I've admired for a while. And I also
- 5:02Speaker 1: picked up, much to your delight, I finally picked up
- 5:05Speaker 1: a rather borrowed my friend Amy's copy of Searcy by
- 5:10Speaker 1: Madeline Miller. Oh, I didn't know that. That's amazing. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 1: I forgot to tell you about it. But like Madeline
- 5:15Speaker 1: Miller wrote a Song of Achilles, which is one of
- 5:18Speaker 1: my favorite books of all time, and I very famously
- 5:21Speaker 1: did interview her for my senior thesis paper for undergrad
- 5:27Speaker 1: I think Searcy is the superior book. Okay, but I
- 5:33Speaker 1: obviously you know Witchcraft is always going to reign supreme
- 5:38Speaker 1: for me. But I think it would be so fun
- 5:40Speaker 1: to do a book club because you and I have
- 5:43Speaker 1: obviously is anyone who listens to this podcast knows have
- 5:45Speaker 1: very different tastes that often intersect. So I feel like
- 5:49Speaker 1: if we did something where like every other month, we
- 5:52Speaker 1: switched off on something that one of us was interested
- 5:56Speaker 1: in reading. Although I'm going to draw a hard line
- 5:58Speaker 1: on like conflict does not abuse is like not going
- 6:01Speaker 1: in the rotation. Oh I can't. I can't honestly provide
- 6:04Speaker 1: any nonfiction, Like you will not pick up any nonfiction. No,
- 6:08Speaker 1: I will pick up nonfiction. Name one nonfiction book you
- 6:12Speaker 1: would consider. Um. Wait, I was reading something nonfiction recently
- 6:17Speaker 1: and now I can't remember what it was. You just
- 6:20Speaker 1: can't handle reality. I can't handle reality though. It's but
- 6:26Speaker 1: my taste is I prefer fiction and if I'm going
- 6:30Speaker 1: to read, and if I'm going to read essays, like
- 6:33Speaker 1: I read a lot of journalism and like essays and nonfiction,
- 6:37Speaker 1: but I don't like reading them. In book form. I
- 6:39Speaker 1: need like the short bites, yeah, the the real nes Um.
- 6:46Speaker 1: If you are interested in a like a virgin book club, Um,
- 6:51Speaker 1: slide into our d M s and let us know
- 6:53Speaker 1: and we will figure out a way to make it happen.
- 6:55Speaker 1: And if you would like to be our intern running
- 6:58Speaker 1: the like a version book club, because we don't have
- 7:00Speaker 1: the capacity to do that, please let us figure we
- 7:03Speaker 1: could figure it out easily. But also slide into our
- 7:06Speaker 1: d M s and recommend some books. Okay, sounds good.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I love to read. Okay, now you want to say,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I say I love to read as if it's with
- 7:17Speaker 1: a gun to my head. Um, okay, yes, let me
- 7:20Speaker 1: tell you Rose. I picked up drag Race Haspania. I'm
- 7:23Speaker 1: honestly very ashamed that I hadn't started watching up until now.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Um I had a friend, Um it might have been
- 7:29Speaker 1: no actually who told me to skip season one because
- 7:33Speaker 1: it's kind of a flop and just watch season two,
- 7:36Speaker 1: which is an immaculately cast season and it is so good.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And I have to say, I mean, okay. The one
- 7:43Speaker 1: caveat is that lip syncs across the board have been terrible,
- 7:47Speaker 1: Like I don't know if like Spanish drag there's a
- 7:51Speaker 1: lot of obviously cultural nuances between all the different kinds
- 7:54Speaker 1: of international drag shows that are happening, but like maybe
- 7:58Speaker 1: there's a different threshold are quality metric or performance style
- 8:02Speaker 1: that exists in Spain because I feel like but I
- 8:05Speaker 1: feel like like lip syncs have been bad across the
- 8:08Speaker 1: board multiple franchises, because the lipsticks have been bad on
- 8:11Speaker 1: All Stars this season. Actually t like they really have been,
- 8:14Speaker 1: like not even Jinks really is like serving in the
- 8:18Speaker 1: lip syncs. But I think part of it is the
- 8:21Speaker 1: song selection. Yeah it is is um that's so true.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I but what I wanted to say, just to plug
- 8:30Speaker 1: the show, or at least to plug season two for
- 8:32Speaker 1: the Virgins, is that one the critiques are incredible, Like
- 8:37Speaker 1: they are so thorough on the critiques for dr Espana,
- 8:41Speaker 1: and the categories are really cool. They had a whole
- 8:44Speaker 1: category on al Motive our Films. They they had a
- 8:49Speaker 1: horror category, which drag Race has never done, and it
- 8:52Speaker 1: was like maybe one of the best runways I've seen
- 8:54Speaker 1: on any drag Race franchise in a very long time.
- 8:57Speaker 1: And the Hobbies, who are the co directors and creators
- 9:02Speaker 1: of laven No, really esteemed creators in Espania are two
- 9:06Speaker 1: of the judges on drag Race, and not only are
- 9:09Speaker 1: the excellent judges, but they are the hottest people on
- 9:14Speaker 1: the planet. And I actually I'm going to send you
- 9:17Speaker 1: a picture right now. I think I've seen what they
- 9:20Speaker 1: look like. Babe. Let's see what you consider the hottest
- 9:23Speaker 1: people on the planet. Just these two average like Abercambie
- 9:27Speaker 1: looking white men. But it's just the fact that they're
- 9:29Speaker 1: like also like talented and astute and intellectual and like
- 9:34Speaker 1: brilliant creators in addition to being hot. I mean, they're hot.
- 9:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't call them the hottest people on the plan. No, no, no, no,
- 9:41Speaker 1: no, no no, no, okay, okay, get wait wait wait wait,
- 9:43Speaker 1: give me give me secon give me a second, give
- 9:45Speaker 1: me a second. No, I don't I don't think. I
- 9:47Speaker 1: don't think different photos will change that opinion. No, it will,
- 9:50Speaker 1: it will, it will, it will, it will, it will
- 9:51Speaker 1: it won't. Okay. Anyways, are they boyfriends, Yes, they're boyfriends.
- 9:55Speaker 1: They're like part their husbands. Basically, it's they're giving Bellamy
- 9:59Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, they are giving Bella me. Oh god,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I hate that about me. Um. Speaking of TV shows
- 10:06Speaker 1: that you that that one of us watches the other
- 10:09Speaker 1: one doesn't. UM. I started watching What We Do in
- 10:13Speaker 1: the Shadows this weekend, which I had never so. It's
- 10:16Speaker 1: a vampire mockumentary that was created by Tako A t
- 10:21Speaker 1: T and the guy from behind Flight of the Concords UM.
- 10:25Speaker 1: I have known about it for a while but was
- 10:28Speaker 1: never really interested in watching it, even though, like obviously
- 10:31Speaker 1: I love vampires. But the new season came out recently.
- 10:35Speaker 1: I think it was just nominated for an Emmy, and
- 10:38Speaker 1: so I guess it's been in the ether enough that
- 10:42Speaker 1: I was interested and saw it pop up on Hulu
- 10:45Speaker 1: as something recommended for me, and I watched the whole
- 10:49Speaker 1: first season this weekend and I haven't laughed out loud
- 10:53Speaker 1: watching a TV show like that in forever. It's actually funny.
- 10:59Speaker 1: It's about for anyone who doesn't know it's about. It's
- 11:02Speaker 1: like mockumentary style, like The Office or Parks and Recreation,
- 11:06Speaker 1: about three vampires who lived together on Staten Island and
- 11:10Speaker 1: they're very like old school vampiric, like very like Dracula
- 11:15Speaker 1: Ivantus Blood but like ridiculous, and they have a human
- 11:18Speaker 1: familiar who takes care of them and they just get
- 11:22Speaker 1: into all these like crazy hijinks. The first season, Beanie
- 11:25Speaker 1: Feldstein is in as a referring guest star. It is
- 11:28Speaker 1: so funny and smart and I just have heard so
- 11:34Speaker 1: many good things about it and it's it's really good.
- 11:38Speaker 1: And despite how kind of tired I am of Taiko A.
- 11:41Speaker 1: T t as a like cultural figure, I mean, he's
- 11:45Speaker 1: he directs and writes a lot of it. But it
- 11:48Speaker 1: was only in one episode. There's actually an episode in
- 11:50Speaker 1: the first season that features actors who have played iconic
- 11:54Speaker 1: vampires in a bunch of different media, like Tilda Swinton's
- 11:57Speaker 1: in It so clever, Like what a what a kind
- 12:01Speaker 1: of cinematic invention on the writing level. Yeah, I guess
- 12:04Speaker 1: it was based on They made a movie version of
- 12:06Speaker 1: this like years ago, and so this is an adaptation
- 12:09Speaker 1: of that. Um. The fourth season is currently on now.
- 12:15Speaker 1: But it's really funny. I think you would be into
- 12:18Speaker 1: it if you watched it. From what you described, it
- 12:20Speaker 1: sounds like really good. I I might have to hop
- 12:22Speaker 1: on because I'm I'm not necessarily running out of TV,
- 12:25Speaker 1: but like I could use something new because I feel
- 12:27Speaker 1: like I'm just watching the same ship. I started it
- 12:29Speaker 1: out because I thought it would be something good to
- 12:31Speaker 1: watch while I was doing something else, like while I
- 12:33Speaker 1: was I was cleaning on Saturday, and thought it would
- 12:35Speaker 1: be good to have something in the background. But then
- 12:37Speaker 1: it's so good that I stopped doing the other things
- 12:40Speaker 1: I was doing so that I could just watch it. Okay,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I love that Rose. I I wouldn't say I was
- 12:47Speaker 1: excited for the Lizzo album, but I am like a
- 12:51Speaker 1: Lizzo stand like I adore her as a celebrity. I
- 12:55Speaker 1: have been following her since day one. I remember going
- 12:59Speaker 1: to see her do a talk and performance at south
- 13:02Speaker 1: By Southwest to like a room of like a hundred
- 13:04Speaker 1: and fifty people, like I love Lizzo and I actually
- 13:08Speaker 1: really loved her last album because I Love You. But
- 13:14Speaker 1: the singles that she has been putting out have been
- 13:20Speaker 1: I mean, they've just they've just they've been TikTok songs.
- 13:23Speaker 1: We can say that they've been perfect. And I don't
- 13:27Speaker 1: want to get and because I love her, I don't
- 13:29Speaker 1: want to get on here and like grill Lizzo. Like
- 13:32Speaker 1: even if I don't think that this new album Special
- 13:35Speaker 1: is really that great. The thing that I feel warrants
- 13:38Speaker 1: critique is a song on this album called Everybody's Gay.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Have you seen or heard about this at all? Not? Well,
- 13:48Speaker 1: she there's actually only seen kind of uniformly positive engagement
- 13:54Speaker 1: with the Lizzo album from people. That's so interesting to me. Um.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I will save maybe my thoughts on the album for
- 14:01Speaker 1: group chats, but I think that it is worth it
- 14:05Speaker 1: to say that Lizzo and her team knew what they
- 14:08Speaker 1: were doing when they put a song on this album
- 14:10Speaker 1: called Everybody's Gay. They're gonna get the pink news them
- 14:13Speaker 1: to us, like headline circuit that says Lizzo has created
- 14:17Speaker 1: like the next queer anthem. This is so amazing, Um,
- 14:22Speaker 1: like put it up in the clubs. It's Michael Jackson
- 14:24Speaker 1: referential like whatever. And like this song, first of all,
- 14:29Speaker 1: it sucks. The lyrics are garbage, and I feel like
- 14:35Speaker 1: it is such a vacant ploy to be an ally
- 14:40Speaker 1: anthem that has not earned its keep, Like when we
- 14:44Speaker 1: think about the canon of gay anthems or whatever, starting
- 14:48Speaker 1: from like Diana Ross doing I'm coming out to express
- 14:52Speaker 1: yourself to born this way. This is coming from artists
- 14:56Speaker 1: who have clocked the hours and have put in the
- 15:00Speaker 1: work as like a queer ally so to speak, to
- 15:04Speaker 1: have written and put out a single that is like
- 15:08Speaker 1: essentially pandering to that community, and I feel like this
- 15:10Speaker 1: song was on like you need to calm down levels
- 15:14Speaker 1: of like cringe in terms of what it was trying
- 15:17Speaker 1: to do with like the Pride circuit. And I don't know,
- 15:22Speaker 1: it just like was very ick to me because Lizzo
- 15:25Speaker 1: unfortunately belongs to this class of celebrities that briefly came
- 15:31Speaker 1: out as like queer and then went back into the closet.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Was like, no, I'm an ally, I'm an ally because
- 15:36Speaker 1: like Nikki did that, jesse J did that, Gaga kind
- 15:40Speaker 1: of did that, Like Marcos never said that she's not
- 15:45Speaker 1: actually bisexual, no, but she has very explicitly pivoted to
- 15:49Speaker 1: ally and every every time she talks about the community
- 15:53Speaker 1: she identifies as an ally, even if she hasn't explicitly
- 15:56Speaker 1: said I'm not bisexual anymore or whatever. It is a
- 15:59Speaker 1: strict heijik motivation, probably put on by like their management teams.
- 16:04Speaker 1: I'm sure it's maybe something they don't want to do,
- 16:06Speaker 1: but like if celebrities are queer, they often have to
- 16:09Speaker 1: go back into the closet to have more mainstream appeal,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and I feel like Lizza was one of those people. Yeah,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I think the difference with Gaga and not to harbor Gaga,
- 16:19Speaker 1: but you know, I spent most of yesterday watching clips
- 16:21Speaker 1: from the Chromatical Ball and the thing that says Gaga
- 16:25Speaker 1: apart her her sexuality aside, and I think it's a
- 16:28Speaker 1: very slippery slope to say, like she's not who she
- 16:31Speaker 1: says she is, but Gaga is and has always been
- 16:34Speaker 1: fully immersed in queer exactly exactly. It's in a way
- 16:38Speaker 1: in a way that I've never seen lizzob And I
- 16:41Speaker 1: wonder if for Lizzo because she's such a gen Z
- 16:44Speaker 1: pop star and we're at this point of like no labels,
- 16:49Speaker 1: you know, like everyone's gay. Like she does feel the
- 16:54Speaker 1: right to play in that sandbox without having actually like
- 16:58Speaker 1: done the on the ground work, just because of the
- 17:01Speaker 1: sort of like almost post identity era that we are in.
- 17:06Speaker 1: And the thing about this song and also with you
- 17:09Speaker 1: need to Calm Down, which I think is in the
- 17:10Speaker 1: same category. It's like, which I do. It's one of
- 17:14Speaker 1: my baby to kind of regularly no no, no, not
- 17:21Speaker 1: but but it's like it's the one with if I'm
- 17:25Speaker 1: coming to that. This is Taylor Swift Spotify playlist and
- 17:27Speaker 1: you need to calm down comes on I won't skip.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Oh my god, you are losing credibility on this podcast
- 17:33Speaker 1: fast that song issh Um, I don't give a ship. Well,
- 17:37Speaker 1: what I was going to say that you disagree with
- 17:39Speaker 1: is that the I would totally excuse the egregiousness of
- 17:43Speaker 1: both of these like songs if they were just good songs.
- 17:47Speaker 1: But the songs are both of the songs. I think
- 17:50Speaker 1: we're more focused on shape never made anybody. Let's get
- 17:53Speaker 1: that sucks. That's one of the worst things that has
- 17:56Speaker 1: ever been written. Um. And I really feel like like
- 17:59Speaker 1: if the songs were good, all of this would be forgiven.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Like I would not give a ship about being pandered too.
- 18:05Speaker 1: If the song is good and um, and that's like
- 18:08Speaker 1: not a great that's I'm not proud of that, but
- 18:10Speaker 1: I think that that is culturally. Culturally, that's how the
- 18:13Speaker 1: machine works. And um. Yeah. Anyways, I just needed to
- 18:16Speaker 1: to to vent about it because Lizzo is someone who
- 18:19Speaker 1: I adore and admire and I'm rooting for and she
- 18:23Speaker 1: you know, her celebrity is not tainted. She's going to
- 18:25Speaker 1: continue to ascend and make better and better work. But like,
- 18:27Speaker 1: this is just not it and I don't think the
- 18:29Speaker 1: album is is it either it's like, honestly like bootleg
- 18:35Speaker 1: Michael Jackson, bordering on bootleg justin Timberlake, which is bootleg
- 18:39Speaker 1: Michael Jackson, I guess, but it's like getting to like
- 18:41Speaker 1: the Robin Thick territory of like generic like disco feel good.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I don't even know what it is, but I mean
- 18:47Speaker 1: speaking but speaking of disco feel good. Before we go, um,
- 18:51Speaker 1: I'm here to give my official review of Minions The
- 18:55Speaker 1: Rise of grou which I did see on my birthday
- 18:58Speaker 1: last week, and it was so good. I had such
- 19:02Speaker 1: a fun time at that movie. I went in knowing
- 19:05Speaker 1: absolutely nothing about Minions still known, I think I probably
- 19:09Speaker 1: know less about them having seen the movie. But it
- 19:12Speaker 1: was a great time. It was short and sweet. The
- 19:16Speaker 1: one thing I was disappointed about was that a lot
- 19:18Speaker 1: of the songs on the album are not actually in
- 19:21Speaker 1: the movie. It's like a lot of the songs that
- 19:23Speaker 1: are covered, they played the actual versions of them in
- 19:25Speaker 1: the movie. So I guess the album is more like
- 19:28Speaker 1: inspired by the film. It's more of like a vibe.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But um, yeah, it was. It was great. I had
- 19:34Speaker 1: a great time, and um, I I don't know that
- 19:38Speaker 1: I will ever see a Minions movie again. I did
- 19:41Speaker 1: clock some gentle Minions in the theater, which I don't
- 19:45Speaker 1: know if you've seen this phenomenon for the visions. What
- 19:48Speaker 1: are what our gentlemans? So it's this TikTok thing of
- 19:53Speaker 1: young men who go to Minions movies in full suits.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Do they have any Minions makeup or paraphernili just they're
- 20:03Speaker 1: just wearing suits? What gentle minions, gentlemenion? Where does this
- 20:07Speaker 1: come from? That's so CULTI probably from TikTok. Probably from
- 20:11Speaker 1: TikTok as it always comes from TikTok. Um. Wow, maybe
- 20:15Speaker 1: I'll wear my suit to the Minions to the to
- 20:17Speaker 1: my Minion screening. I don't really recommend you see it.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I don't think you would enjoy it. I mean, I
- 20:24Speaker 1: think it would be fine, but I just it's not
- 20:26Speaker 1: how I want to spend my day, I guess. I
- 20:30Speaker 1: still I'm honestly behind on on like going to theaters
- 20:33Speaker 1: and seeing movies. I have to get my home, I asked, Hi,
- 20:35Speaker 1: an am see, I've been seeing like the thing three
- 20:38Speaker 1: movies a week because of my now stubs. A list status,
- 20:43Speaker 1: that's ryan a list status, Mama, I'm going to see
- 20:46Speaker 1: where the crowdut sing tomorrow problematic. I have something I'm
- 21:05Speaker 1: not going to say shameful but definitely vulnerable to admit,
- 21:10Speaker 1: which is that when Titanic came out in theaters, I
- 21:14Speaker 1: saw it five times, and the original release, the original release,
- 21:20Speaker 1: I saw it five times. And how old were you?
- 21:22Speaker 1: I was nine and I saw it five times. The
- 21:24Speaker 1: first time I saw with my mom, and then after
- 21:26Speaker 1: that she was like, you're on your own. So the
- 21:29Speaker 1: most visceral memory I have of seeing it is I
- 21:33Speaker 1: went with my brother, my brother who's two years younger
- 21:35Speaker 1: than me, so he would have been seven, and totally
- 21:39Speaker 1: didn't get what was going on. And I was sobbing
- 21:42Speaker 1: the whole movie. And at the end, after the movie ended,
- 21:45Speaker 1: we were outside of the movie theater waiting for my
- 21:47Speaker 1: mom to pick us up, sobbing, and this elderly couple,
- 21:52Speaker 1: this like old woman came over to be like, little boy,
- 21:56Speaker 1: are you okay? You know she didn't know, and I
- 22:00Speaker 1: was like, it was, It's just such a sad movie
- 22:04Speaker 1: that honestly sounds a lot like your experience of watching Coco,
- 22:08Speaker 1: which I think you've counted on the show before. But
- 22:10Speaker 1: I just can't remember. Yes, Um, I do have a
- 22:13Speaker 1: propensity for crying so loudly in an after movies that
- 22:17Speaker 1: people need to check on me. Stranger alright, complete strangers
- 22:21Speaker 1: are like, are you okay? Girl? You know I am
- 22:24Speaker 1: a cancer. I'm a crier and nothing gets me like
- 22:28Speaker 1: a melodramatic movie. And what is more melodramatic? Then we
- 22:34Speaker 1: told you this was melodrama, as Lord sang on her
- 22:38Speaker 1: two thousand seventeen album Melodrama. Um, yeah, Titanic really is
- 22:43Speaker 1: the perfect blending of a romantic melodrama and an action
- 22:50Speaker 1: disaster movie, like perfectly, like if they had a child,
- 22:57Speaker 1: like the absolute best even split of a film in
- 23:02Speaker 1: those two ways, and like each of them kind of
- 23:06Speaker 1: in conversation with them, like propping up the other, because
- 23:10Speaker 1: you could have made a Titanic movie that's all about
- 23:13Speaker 1: just like the disaster of it, but then you would
- 23:15Speaker 1: be missing the human element and you could make this
- 23:19Speaker 1: like schmaltzy romance movie, but it wouldn't have the high
- 23:24Speaker 1: stakes of the Titanic sinking. So I do think bringing
- 23:27Speaker 1: those two together is what makes this like a perfect film,
- 23:31Speaker 1: And the love story is what lets you feel this
- 23:35Speaker 1: kind of larger than life tragedy in a really human way,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and like that their personal tragedy makes the huge scale
- 23:47Speaker 1: of the Titanic itself feel even more tragic. I was,
- 23:53Speaker 1: I'm trying to think of other movies that are also
- 23:55Speaker 1: like one part romance one part disaster film, Like Hunger
- 23:58Speaker 1: Games is like, I guess, more dystopian than it is disaster. Yeah,
- 24:02Speaker 1: and it's also not a romance. I mean it does.
- 24:06Speaker 1: It has a love triangle in it, but it's not
- 24:09Speaker 1: what it's about. But the love triangle takes is in
- 24:13Speaker 1: the entire trilogy. I think it's a little but it's
- 24:15Speaker 1: not centered the way it isn't in Titanic because its Titanic.
- 24:19Speaker 1: What people think about is not, Oh, King Kong, that's
- 24:25Speaker 1: a love story. I don't think Peter Jackson said it
- 24:27Speaker 1: was a love story, But I'm talking about like, when
- 24:30Speaker 1: you leave Titanic, you don't you think about the love story?
- 24:34Speaker 1: Did you like King Kong? Talk about another three hour movie?
- 24:37Speaker 1: I've never seen it. Really, I will say it's very good.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Jack Black eight, He really does he play King Kong? No,
- 24:47Speaker 1: he plays like you know the scientists that that you
- 24:51Speaker 1: know understands King Kong, that who has the love story
- 24:55Speaker 1: Jack Black and King Kong. I'm sure there's fan fiction about.
- 24:59Speaker 1: I think they loves to or as King Kong and
- 25:01Speaker 1: Naomi Watts. I think it's I think there's a I
- 25:05Speaker 1: don't actually remember, but I do just have a very
- 25:07Speaker 1: vivid memory of Peter Jackson talking about how much he
- 25:10Speaker 1: loves King Kong and that is a love story. Um
- 25:13Speaker 1: is Peter Jackson British? No, he know, he's from New Zealand.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Was like the whole the whole thing. Oh right, yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 1: that's why tellphone Anyways, Titanic. Um. I was not allowed
- 25:24Speaker 1: to watch Titanic growing up, obviously, but we really devastated.
- 25:28Speaker 1: It's weirdest, like in our household, like there could not
- 25:32Speaker 1: be like a runchier movie, Like like in my mind
- 25:36Speaker 1: it was the most r rated, most scandalous thing I
- 25:41Speaker 1: could possibly go see because of Kate Winslet's boobs, because
- 25:44Speaker 1: of well I didn't know why at the time, but
- 25:48Speaker 1: looking back, looking back, because because of the boobs, like
- 25:50Speaker 1: the sex scene is like like really really p g
- 25:54Speaker 1: Like all you see is her hands. I mean it's
- 25:58Speaker 1: very visceral, but you don't see anything, you know what
- 26:00Speaker 1: I mean, And you see them kind of like shuddering
- 26:04Speaker 1: on each other and and you know, like it is
- 26:07Speaker 1: kind of clear that in that relationship, Jack is the
- 26:10Speaker 1: bottom because he's the one who is much more like
- 26:15Speaker 1: winded by the whole situation. He like collapses on top
- 26:20Speaker 1: of her. And um, yeah, Kate is definitely the topic. Also,
- 26:24Speaker 1: like they are. I think they're a T for TA couple, right,
- 26:28Speaker 1: you were telling me this, and I feel like, um,
- 26:31Speaker 1: I feel like you know, I would, I would ask
- 26:33Speaker 1: you to provide evidence and our support. Okay, okay, I will,
- 26:37Speaker 1: you will, I will provide me some some backing. So
- 26:41Speaker 1: some of this is so some of this is supported
- 26:43Speaker 1: by producer Phoebe who found an article that was written
- 26:46Speaker 1: about this whole thing. Um, the article neither of us
- 26:50Speaker 1: have read. This theory is this theory is not mine.
- 26:53Speaker 1: I mean I've definitely always felt that there was their
- 26:55Speaker 1: Their vibe was very tee for tea, which I see immediately.
- 26:59Speaker 1: But one of the things that was specifically called out
- 27:01Speaker 1: it's like, I do think Leo of this era, like
- 27:05Speaker 1: teen dreamboat Leo on the cover of Tiger Beet magazine,
- 27:09Speaker 1: is really giving like a year on T energy, maybe
- 27:13Speaker 1: even less than a year. I think a year. I
- 27:17Speaker 1: think a year long enough for the voice to drop
- 27:19Speaker 1: a little bit um like post top surgery. And that's
- 27:22Speaker 1: one of the things is that you never see him
- 27:24Speaker 1: shirtless in the movie. Yeah, there we go, because you
- 27:28Speaker 1: don't want to see you because otherwise you would see
- 27:30Speaker 1: the topic. Jack and Rose very chosen names. I'm sorry,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I mean not really really coming for me, but they are.
- 27:39Speaker 1: They're chosen names. I mean, Jack is a really hot name.
- 27:42Speaker 1: I feel like that must have been it probably, I'll
- 27:44Speaker 1: bet you those were two of the most popular names,
- 27:46Speaker 1: like absolutely, like like kids who now are what like
- 27:50Speaker 1: twenty there are all Rose. Well, actually they've all transitions
- 27:56Speaker 1: for the Jackson Jack. Um, I was there? Um, did
- 28:01Speaker 1: you have the VHS box set? Girl and My boy?
- 28:06Speaker 1: That I mean the movie that came in three VHS?
- 28:09Speaker 1: I know its two VH. Sorry. I remember so vividly
- 28:13Speaker 1: the day that I went to the mall to buy
- 28:18Speaker 1: the box set of Titanic and I went home and
- 28:22Speaker 1: I watched it while sitting on the bed that my
- 28:25Speaker 1: ex stepdad's grandma died on, and watched the movie twice
- 28:31Speaker 1: in a row, and then probably watch it like every
- 28:34Speaker 1: day after school when I got home stick in the
- 28:36Speaker 1: head and now for a year and I I And
- 28:39Speaker 1: it wasn't just the movie for me, so like Titanic
- 28:41Speaker 1: mania was such a thing. Okay, you had the paraphernalia.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I had the paraphernalia. I had a book about the movie.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I had a book about the shipwreck. I asked for
- 28:50Speaker 1: a model of it for Hanuka and got it and
- 28:54Speaker 1: built about like a fifteenth of it and then completely
- 28:58Speaker 1: abandoned it and just sat in sat in my closet.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Um I I was. I was more obsessed with the
- 29:05Speaker 1: movie than with the ship, and like the story itself,
- 29:10Speaker 1: although I do like other you know, Titanic associated media,
- 29:15Speaker 1: like I love that Titanic the Titanic sinking is the
- 29:18Speaker 1: inciting incident of Downtown Abbey. I didn't know this either,
- 29:22Speaker 1: And I mean, my mind is blowing because I've never
- 29:25Speaker 1: seen down Natty Well. I didn't he really need you
- 29:28Speaker 1: really need to change that it's about the Titanic for
- 29:30Speaker 1: some reason. But that's like, I mean, I feel like
- 29:32Speaker 1: the Titanic is like nerd ship. Like the fact that
- 29:35Speaker 1: James Cameron. Another fact that you turned me onto that
- 29:37Speaker 1: I had no idea was that James Cameron was a
- 29:40Speaker 1: marine biologist or he was not a marine biologist, but
- 29:43Speaker 1: he was fascinated with the bottom of the ocean. Um
- 29:49Speaker 1: he worked as an explorer. Well he he you know,
- 29:53Speaker 1: was a very rich director after the success of Terminator
- 29:57Speaker 1: and Aliens, and he started doing all this underwater exploration
- 30:02Speaker 1: and a lot of the footage of the Titanic that's
- 30:05Speaker 1: in the movie are from his And that's why the
- 30:10Speaker 1: Bill Paxton character in the movie like is in the
- 30:14Speaker 1: movie because he is basically a self insert of James
- 30:18Speaker 1: Cameron and literally, like in a deleted scene, hooks up
- 30:22Speaker 1: with Um James Cameron's ex wife, who was who plays
- 30:26Speaker 1: the granddaughter of Old Rose. I'm shook to find out
- 30:29Speaker 1: that there are deleted scenes, honestly because this man needed
- 30:33Speaker 1: an editor and I need more. I wish the deleted
- 30:35Speaker 1: scenes were on the movie. I think it could be longer.
- 30:37Speaker 1: No it I feel like a third of it could
- 30:40Speaker 1: have been a chop chop chopped or honestly, if it
- 30:42Speaker 1: were made today, it would just be a limited series.
- 30:46Speaker 1: It would be it would have been a great limited series.
- 30:48Speaker 1: It would be. I mean that's basically what Downtown abou
- 30:50Speaker 1: Ish I would like to I would like a limited
- 30:52Speaker 1: series that's centered around Kathy Bates, the uncloppable Molly Brown.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Well that is actually and we have to get to Kathy.
- 30:59Speaker 1: But I have to say, like, the thing that is
- 31:03Speaker 1: really cool about the world building of the movie is
- 31:06Speaker 1: that the Titanic is in and of itself an ecosystem
- 31:09Speaker 1: that you only peel away a few layers of by
- 31:12Speaker 1: way of the characters that you follow around. But if
- 31:15Speaker 1: it were a mini series, you really would get to
- 31:18Speaker 1: dive into so many different parts of the boat and
- 31:21Speaker 1: so many different like people that kind of make this
- 31:24Speaker 1: thing happen. It would be very Downton Abbey. It would
- 31:27Speaker 1: be very because down to like the whole point of
- 31:29Speaker 1: Downton Abbey is like it's about the the the tension
- 31:33Speaker 1: and the differences between the upstairs and the downstairs, the
- 31:36Speaker 1: masters and the servants. And I think that's what um
- 31:39Speaker 1: something that's like I like Titanic obviously as a movie
- 31:42Speaker 1: like does reckon with class, Like that's what the whole
- 31:45Speaker 1: love story is about. But you're right in that, I
- 31:48Speaker 1: think like it's a really great setting for a longer
- 31:50Speaker 1: piece of fiction because you could investigate all of these
- 31:54Speaker 1: different people, like you know, the people, the first class people,
- 31:58Speaker 1: you know, the people in steer Ridge, the people who
- 32:00Speaker 1: are working on the boat. How long were they at
- 32:02Speaker 1: sea before they crashed? Um, I want to say like
- 32:05Speaker 1: ten days? Okay on April twelve. I would love to
- 32:10Speaker 1: watch a mini series that was about those ten days.
- 32:13Speaker 1: And they could all just be about gossip, like literally,
- 32:17Speaker 1: like intracommunal, like Titanic, like class Woul should barely be
- 32:20Speaker 1: the gilded age? Yes on a boat. Yeah, well not
- 32:23Speaker 1: the guild age, because that is like not a good
- 32:25Speaker 1: TV show. But like, get out of here, baby, you
- 32:28Speaker 1: have said verbatim that it's not good like you. The
- 32:33Speaker 1: first couple of episodes were a little boring, but by
- 32:35Speaker 1: the end of the season it was incredible, but incredible
- 32:39Speaker 1: in a background television No, no, incredible and I was
- 32:42Speaker 1: on the edge of my seat glued to the TV.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Really yes, well maybe I will. And it's and it
- 32:48Speaker 1: was created and written by Julian Fellows, who also created
- 32:51Speaker 1: and wrote down Too Abbey, So she must have been upset.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Was she obsessed with the titan Titanic too? I think
- 32:57Speaker 1: that the reason the Titanic sinking is is was useful
- 33:02Speaker 1: as a plot device in Downton Abbey. And I think
- 33:05Speaker 1: why a lot of artists, like James Cameron other people
- 33:10Speaker 1: find it interesting. Is because it does feel like a
- 33:13Speaker 1: cultural shift, and like, um, it does kind of signal
- 33:18Speaker 1: the end of and the end of of of a
- 33:22Speaker 1: period in you know, society for sure. Like it is
- 33:25Speaker 1: kind of like the end of like the Gilded Age
- 33:27Speaker 1: and like the Edwardian era UM, and it kind of
- 33:30Speaker 1: ushers in a new age UM. And it like literally
- 33:34Speaker 1: all of these rich people dying you know, at sea
- 33:38Speaker 1: at like at this during this um you know, kind
- 33:42Speaker 1: of like the most at the time, like the biggest
- 33:47Speaker 1: manifestation of opulence and arrogance, you know, because it was
- 33:52Speaker 1: like the Ship of dreams. It was like the biggest
- 33:54Speaker 1: ship ever made. It was unsinkable. And that like the
- 33:58Speaker 1: gag that that ship sunk on a maiden voyage while
- 34:04Speaker 1: all of the some of the richest, most famous people
- 34:08Speaker 1: in the world were on board. Is like that's why
- 34:11Speaker 1: it's such an enduring tragedy, is because it is like
- 34:14Speaker 1: a crystallization of, you know, the arrogance of man. So
- 34:18Speaker 1: the Titanic basically was this generation's fire Festival. It's not
- 34:22Speaker 1: a perfect metaphor because I think like fire Festival was
- 34:27Speaker 1: like was a scam, and the Titanic was not necessarily
- 34:30Speaker 1: a scam. It was just like, well it scammed a
- 34:32Speaker 1: lot of people, was theirs. It was just kind of
- 34:35Speaker 1: like a gross miscalculation, whereas Fire Festival like was actually
- 34:39Speaker 1: trying to pull the wool over people's eyes. Well, I
- 34:42Speaker 1: mean the Titanic was clearly not built properly, like very
- 34:45Speaker 1: Boeing seven kind of stick. Like that's a little bit
- 34:49Speaker 1: of a scam. They did scam people. Yeah, where's the
- 34:52Speaker 1: wors the inventing and a miniseries about like the girl
- 34:55Speaker 1: boss who made this? I love that it has to
- 34:59Speaker 1: be a woman. That's that's why we have all these
- 35:02Speaker 1: girl Boss TV shows. It's like it's just misogyny. Yeah.
- 35:18Speaker 1: I feel like if if the Titanic existed, you know today,
- 35:22Speaker 1: like the top of that would be like influencers, you
- 35:24Speaker 1: know what I mean, influencers and like George W. Bush,
- 35:28Speaker 1: who else would be up there? Just rich people, rich people,
- 35:32Speaker 1: the Headid's real housewife. Maybe. I don't think the Kardashian
- 35:37Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think any of the house eyes
- 35:38Speaker 1: are even rich enough to be like on the top
- 35:40Speaker 1: of the type. Yeah, well maybe the Beverly Hills girls yeah,
- 35:44Speaker 1: or the Dubai girls. The Dubai girls, Yeah, yeah, they would,
- 35:49Speaker 1: But who wants to be on a boat for that long?
- 35:51Speaker 1: Like the the idea of traveling by boat? Do you
- 35:55Speaker 1: get sea sick? I do get sea sick on like
- 35:58Speaker 1: extended trips. I've only been on one cruise. I don't
- 36:03Speaker 1: remember why my parents didn't and we might have gotten
- 36:06Speaker 1: like a group on or something. But I remember enjoying
- 36:09Speaker 1: the novelty of a cruise, but like mostly being disgusted
- 36:13Speaker 1: by everything I lost. I lost my virginity on a cruise. No, ye,
- 36:20Speaker 1: you lost your virginity at seat I know, just like
- 36:23Speaker 1: just like Jack and Rose and I did think about
- 36:26Speaker 1: that while it was happening. Yeah, and it was who
- 36:30Speaker 1: was it? What was the circumstance? How have we never
- 36:32Speaker 1: talked about this on a podcast about virginity? So it
- 36:35Speaker 1: was New Year's Eve? No, it was not New Year's Eve.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I was a senior in high school and I was
- 36:42Speaker 1: had like made friends with these kids who were on
- 36:45Speaker 1: the cruise, and we were all like in a hotel.
- 36:48Speaker 1: We were all in one of our rooms, and there
- 36:52Speaker 1: was one other gay kid, and so the two straight
- 36:55Speaker 1: couples we were with started like hooking up in their
- 36:58Speaker 1: respective beds, because that's just like what teenagers do when
- 37:01Speaker 1: they're hanging out. It's like, well, like we're all going
- 37:03Speaker 1: to hook up in the same room because like we
- 37:06Speaker 1: don't have anywhere else to go, and so the gay
- 37:08Speaker 1: can I kind of looked at each other and we're like,
- 37:10Speaker 1: I guess we should leave um. And then we were
- 37:14Speaker 1: like we hadn't been into each other the whole trip,
- 37:16Speaker 1: but it's it's it's a default. It's yeah, and also
- 37:20Speaker 1: you know the romance of being New Year's Eve if
- 37:24Speaker 1: we were and we couldn't go back to either of
- 37:28Speaker 1: our rooms because I was sharing a room with my brother.
- 37:30Speaker 1: He was sharing a room with like someone else in
- 37:32Speaker 1: his family. So we had to go to a bathroom
- 37:36Speaker 1: and fuck in one of the stalls, and he used
- 37:40Speaker 1: hand soap as lube, yes, and it was like so
- 37:46Speaker 1: painful and uncomfortable, but I did your asshole was squeaky clean.
- 37:51Speaker 1: I was squeaky clean, and I do think I might
- 37:54Speaker 1: have like done hand on the side of the bathroom. Rose, Like, Rose,
- 38:02Speaker 1: is that why you have not? Why do you have
- 38:05Speaker 1: your name? Rose? Is this? So that is how I
- 38:09Speaker 1: lost my virginy? I never spoke to this boy again.
- 38:11Speaker 1: He was very cute though he looked like um, he
- 38:13Speaker 1: looked like Jason Biggs from American Pie. Wow. So that
- 38:17Speaker 1: was my sort of Titanics. And then the boat sank
- 38:20Speaker 1: an iceberg in the boat sank, Wow, But I survived
- 38:23Speaker 1: because I got into the life boat with the women
- 38:25Speaker 1: and children. Do you think if we were on the
- 38:28Speaker 1: Titanic in and we tried to get on one of
- 38:31Speaker 1: the life boats with the women and children, do you
- 38:33Speaker 1: think they would let us on? No? I don't think so. Well,
- 38:36Speaker 1: I mean they might let me on because they'll be like, well,
- 38:38Speaker 1: here's a man. But that's they wouldn't have because children.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Oh right, yeah. Oh. In my head, I just immediately
- 38:46Speaker 1: assumed that all the men get the privilege of getting on.
- 38:48Speaker 1: Then that's the river someone happened. It's the what's the
- 38:51Speaker 1: one circumstance in which the patriarchy like doesn't right? Right?
- 38:56Speaker 1: But that I mean, rich guys still got their own
- 38:58Speaker 1: boats though, Because you think I would if they would
- 39:00Speaker 1: have just assumed I was like I was fish, Yeah,
- 39:03Speaker 1: I think I would have gotten on the boat. I mean, yeah,
- 39:05Speaker 1: I guess it would depend I would depend on a
- 39:07Speaker 1: few different things. But you know, I wouldn't have left
- 39:09Speaker 1: you behind. I would have stayed on the boat with you,
- 39:11Speaker 1: just like Ross I would have. I would have gotten
- 39:13Speaker 1: on the boat and then I would have had that
- 39:14Speaker 1: moment I was like, I can't leave them behind, and
- 39:17Speaker 1: I would have jumped onto the ship. But then I
- 39:19Speaker 1: probably would have like missed and fallen into water and die.
- 39:21Speaker 1: I know, oh my god. Honestly, like disaster movies, like
- 39:25Speaker 1: really like like I had a lot of existential terror
- 39:28Speaker 1: around because of disaster movies when I was a kid.
- 39:31Speaker 1: Um we had this there's this like novel slash TV
- 39:35Speaker 1: series that's really popular among Christians called Left Behind. Yes,
- 39:39Speaker 1: I've never read it, but I remember every time I
- 39:42Speaker 1: went into a bookstore when I was a kid, I
- 39:44Speaker 1: would see them and the covers are very much giving
- 39:47Speaker 1: like young adults sci fi fantasy. Yeah, and so I
- 39:49Speaker 1: would so I would always be like, is this something
- 39:52Speaker 1: I should be reading? Is this like a vampire romance
- 39:54Speaker 1: or something? And for those of you that don't know,
- 39:56Speaker 1: it's about the rapture. It's about the rapture of our
- 39:59Speaker 1: Lord and Savior. I've never I don't remember ever finishing
- 40:04Speaker 1: the books, but I actually have a very vivid This
- 40:06Speaker 1: is a really great Margot memory of when my sister
- 40:08Speaker 1: started reading this series. I remember her being very affective
- 40:12Speaker 1: by it. And one night my mom was like, princesso Francisco,
- 40:15Speaker 1: come come into Medissa's room and I was like, okay,
- 40:18Speaker 1: And I come in and my sister is sobbing uncontrollably,
- 40:21Speaker 1: and I was like, oh my god, what's going on?
- 40:23Speaker 1: There is everything okay? And my sister has like the
- 40:27Speaker 1: Left Behind, like the Left Behind book, like the first one,
- 40:30Speaker 1: like in her lap or whatever, and and um, she's
- 40:34Speaker 1: crying because the book is horrific and like really scary
- 40:37Speaker 1: and about the end of the world and how if
- 40:38Speaker 1: you're a sinner you're going to die basically yeah. And
- 40:41Speaker 1: my my mom was like, your sister has decided to
- 40:45Speaker 1: accept Lord and Savior into her heart and she she's
- 40:49Speaker 1: chosen a path of Christ. Isn't that such good news?
- 40:53Speaker 1: And I was like, my my sister is literally crying.
- 40:56Speaker 1: She's like, aren't you so happy? And I was like,
- 40:58Speaker 1: so this book enacted psychological terror to trick my sister,
- 41:04Speaker 1: and that was the whole point of them. Yes, literally
- 41:07Speaker 1: there's propaganda. They're literally propagandic It so fucked um. But yeah, no,
- 41:12Speaker 1: I wish there was like a basically what the Titanic.
- 41:15Speaker 1: I wish there was like a teen book series about
- 41:16Speaker 1: the Titanic. There probably is. We need a gay Titanic story.
- 41:21Speaker 1: I would love. I mean, this is what I'm saying
- 41:22Speaker 1: about the mini series is like, well, I mean there's
- 41:24Speaker 1: there's so many different stories. I mean there are lots
- 41:27Speaker 1: of like in fan fiction, there's lots of Titanic A
- 41:30Speaker 1: use alternate universe. So it's like these two characters but
- 41:35Speaker 1: they're on the Titanic. I've definitely very Potter. Yeah, Draco
- 41:40Speaker 1: Harry on the Titanic. I've definitely I've actually definitely read
- 41:43Speaker 1: that before. Stupid I hate that. Oh my god. Okay,
- 41:49Speaker 1: so some of my favorite parts of the movie, Okay,
- 41:52Speaker 1: favorite favorite line reading, So like they're definitely like when
- 41:55Speaker 1: Rose gets out of the car at the beginning, and
- 41:57Speaker 1: like she has the hot on and she looks up
- 41:59Speaker 1: at the type Titanic and then it doesn't look bigger
- 42:02Speaker 1: than the Maretania and then um, you know, she has
- 42:05Speaker 1: some some banter with Billy Zane, who plays Cal her
- 42:08Speaker 1: her fiance, and he says you can be blase about
- 42:10Speaker 1: something's Rose, but not about Titanic love that love that one.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Also when Rose and her mom are fighting about like
- 42:18Speaker 1: being poor and Rose's mom is tightening her corset and
- 42:24Speaker 1: they're fighting and Rosco's careful mother, you'll give yourself a
- 42:26Speaker 1: nose bleed, which is a scene that I reenacted with
- 42:30Speaker 1: Rebecca Moore on the set of The Cocktail Story is
- 42:33Speaker 1: Poor and that I was in. Oh no, no, it
- 42:35Speaker 1: was with Sophie. Sophie was lacing up my corset. I
- 42:37Speaker 1: love that. I mean, any scene in any cultural object
- 42:40Speaker 1: where a woman is putting another woman into a corset
- 42:43Speaker 1: is a movie that I want to watch. The Caribbean.
- 42:48Speaker 1: We're just going a cut breeze. Were she saying it
- 42:51Speaker 1: like through her teeth. And then because Kire Nightley does
- 42:54Speaker 1: have the same voice as Sean Connery, so she says
- 42:57Speaker 1: like you have no shunch of decentcy just you can
- 43:02Speaker 1: you can hear her underbite, and she faints because of
- 43:05Speaker 1: the corset because that's why she falls into the oceans
- 43:08Speaker 1: because her corset is so tight. Well, she actually was
- 43:12Speaker 1: physically injured from that scene. She I think she like
- 43:14Speaker 1: broke a rib or something like that, but she did
- 43:17Speaker 1: it so gracefully. Yeah, and she was seventeen years old.
- 43:22Speaker 1: How old was she? She was? She was young. I
- 43:24Speaker 1: also think I think Kate Winslett was really young when
- 43:27Speaker 1: she made Titanic could be in Partan, but Kira could
- 43:31Speaker 1: not be in Titanic. Wait, no, Kira could actually do
- 43:34Speaker 1: Titanic beautifully. Kate Winslet she turned twenty one while filming
- 43:40Speaker 1: the movie, and Leo turned two, so they were really young,
- 43:44Speaker 1: really young. Do you think do you think Kira could
- 43:46Speaker 1: be in Titanic as Rose? Yeah? No, I mean yes,
- 43:52Speaker 1: I certainly think that Kira has that sort of I's
- 43:56Speaker 1: not Kira who. Kira has that like overlay of real
- 44:00Speaker 1: t with like a like a strength underneath, and she
- 44:03Speaker 1: could definitely do it. Yeah, that that that kind of um,
- 44:06Speaker 1: a tenacity, a spunk he has that spunk Rose Rose
- 44:11Speaker 1: definitely has spunk um And you know, like it's sad like,
- 44:14Speaker 1: let's not forget that the Jack and Rose meat because
- 44:17Speaker 1: Rose is about to kill herself. Yeah, she's about to
- 44:22Speaker 1: jump off the back of the boat and get shredded
- 44:24Speaker 1: by the propellers. I forgot about that. Very dark Yeah
- 44:28Speaker 1: it is, and that it feels like it feels like
- 44:30Speaker 1: I'm standing in the middle of a room screaming that
- 44:32Speaker 1: no one here's that's kind of the beginning of the holiday.
- 44:35Speaker 1: To do you remember when she sticks her head and
- 44:40Speaker 1: no point, no point. I love that scene. I mean,
- 44:46Speaker 1: been there a girl. Another of my favorite scenes, which
- 45:03Speaker 1: I did think was really discussing at the time, is
- 45:05Speaker 1: the scene where Jack teachers Rose has a spit spit
- 45:08Speaker 1: like a man. Well yeah, I mean, and they really
- 45:11Speaker 1: like Hakka lugi and then he swallows it. There really is,
- 45:14Speaker 1: which is kind of hot. Now it is hot. I
- 45:17Speaker 1: remember it being hot. The movie could not exist without
- 45:22Speaker 1: gender roles, like the gender in this movie is so strong,
- 45:25Speaker 1: which I think actually is an appeal to the movie.
- 45:27Speaker 1: I I really love the hard line that is and
- 45:31Speaker 1: that honestly enforces your teeth for te totally. I mean,
- 45:34Speaker 1: she's running around like like that scene where she's running
- 45:40Speaker 1: around the bottom of the ship as it's full full
- 45:43Speaker 1: of water and she's in a fucking gown, in the gown,
- 45:48Speaker 1: the gown, but she won't because she's a lady. But
- 45:51Speaker 1: it's such a gag and she looks so good. And also,
- 45:55Speaker 1: interestingly enough, like the screen, I think the story wants
- 45:59Speaker 1: you to see the ways that Kate. You know, Kate's
- 46:04Speaker 1: character really has a lot more like man tendencies, Like
- 46:08Speaker 1: she has a tenacity, she has that you know, confidence,
- 46:10Speaker 1: she she wants to bring into those spaces. And Leo
- 46:13Speaker 1: is like very sensitive and like very dreamy and like
- 46:16Speaker 1: they like that that that that duality, the swappiness and
- 46:20Speaker 1: the t for tinas she does. She kind of feels
- 46:23Speaker 1: like the heroine and he feels like the damns the heroine.
- 46:27Speaker 1: He that is so tea all the way. I wonder
- 46:30Speaker 1: like was that intentional or no? No, I mean like
- 46:34Speaker 1: they're there. But you know, it doesn't matter what movie
- 46:36Speaker 1: you make, there will be you know, seven hundred term
- 46:39Speaker 1: papers about why it's queer or why the gender roles
- 46:42Speaker 1: have been Titanic is. You know, I wouldn't say that
- 46:46Speaker 1: it's queer. I will say that it's like gay canon
- 46:49Speaker 1: because of the further surrounding it and how much we
- 46:54Speaker 1: love it. And you know, some things are so heterosexual
- 46:58Speaker 1: that they become gay. Yeah, they have to turn back
- 47:01Speaker 1: around and become gay. And I think that so much
- 47:05Speaker 1: of the lead up there's a lot of suspended romantic tension,
- 47:10Speaker 1: and I think that that build up is also very gay.
- 47:13Speaker 1: There's a lot that comes with the like when are
- 47:16Speaker 1: they going to kiss? Oh my god, how they're falling
- 47:17Speaker 1: in love? Oh my god, it's happening, like swept away
- 47:21Speaker 1: my flying machine, I'm flying Jack? What is I'm flying?
- 47:25Speaker 1: It's the little song he sings to her when they're
- 47:27Speaker 1: on the on the back on the world. Yeah, okay,
- 47:33Speaker 1: oh god, that was like so inescapable like that, just
- 47:36Speaker 1: like the culture surrounding Titanic. I remember reading Mad magazine
- 47:41Speaker 1: and it was the whole Titanity magazine. Allowed to read
- 47:46Speaker 1: that growing up because it's kind of raunchy, right, yeah
- 47:48Speaker 1: it is. Um well, I would read Nickelodeon magazine, which
- 47:52Speaker 1: probably had some Titanic stuff in it. I had a
- 47:55Speaker 1: replica Heart of the Ocean, of course he did. And
- 47:58Speaker 1: I was it expensive or when it was cheap, and
- 48:01Speaker 1: I might still have one because I was Old Rose
- 48:03Speaker 1: for Halloween a couple of years ago. Was one of
- 48:06Speaker 1: my last successful Halloween costume. Really good Halloween cost thank you.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I did the old age makeup myself, right, Oh I
- 48:13Speaker 1: love that, by which I mean I just didn't wear makeup. Yeah,
- 48:16Speaker 1: you watched one YouTube tutorial and oh yeah I love that. No,
- 48:20Speaker 1: I know, I did actual old age makeup and that
- 48:24Speaker 1: was I was djaying, So I was like DJ old
- 48:27Speaker 1: Rose that night. That was fun. I love that we
- 48:30Speaker 1: need to bring you out of DJ retirement. I've been
- 48:33Speaker 1: advocating for this. I feel like at our next our
- 48:35Speaker 1: next show really needs to have what was your DJ name?
- 48:38Speaker 1: Just Rose? It was just Rose, DJ Rose. What was
- 48:41Speaker 1: your vibe as a DJ? Um techno? It was like
- 48:46Speaker 1: it was like um Berlin's sex party me um uh pop.
- 48:58Speaker 1: I was going to ask if you played pop. Yeah.
- 49:00Speaker 1: I played like really trolley remixes of pop songs like
- 49:06Speaker 1: I would like I would play like a sex party
- 49:09Speaker 1: at a dungeon and not like five Am. I would
- 49:11Speaker 1: play a remix of come Clean, the Hillary Duff song.
- 49:15Speaker 1: That's really good. That's a really good yeah. So that
- 49:19Speaker 1: was That was kind of my DJ five I'm sure
- 49:22Speaker 1: I have a my Heart Will Go On remix somewhere which,
- 49:25Speaker 1: oh my god, my Heart will go On. We were
- 49:27Speaker 1: remaking Titanic. Who would do the song? We're thinking, Okay,
- 49:35Speaker 1: we're thinking torch song but mainstream. I feel like Adele
- 49:40Speaker 1: is obvious because mainstream, but like think about it in
- 49:43Speaker 1: the nineties, like Celine Dion was not necessarily at her peak,
- 49:47Speaker 1: but in the late nineties she wasn't. She was around,
- 49:50Speaker 1: but she well around in the United States and Canada.
- 49:54Speaker 1: She is the most famous person of that. Okay, so
- 49:56Speaker 1: actually I do think Adele, you're right. Yeah, to me,
- 49:59Speaker 1: it's getting Dell. But who else? A Delphie is too
- 50:02Speaker 1: obvious because she did the James Bond movie too. She
- 50:05Speaker 1: didn't a Bond song, Like, who else would it be?
- 50:08Speaker 1: Like a tor a contemporary Torch song. It's not Phoebe
- 50:11Speaker 1: Bridgers to all, but she's actually so mainstream now maybe no,
- 50:15Speaker 1: it wouldn't. Can you imagine Bridgers doing a Titanic song?
- 50:19Speaker 1: Actually if they? Here's the thing though, is like if
- 50:21Speaker 1: it were made today, it would probably like Jack Antonov
- 50:24Speaker 1: would like produce the soundtrack, and then it would be
- 50:26Speaker 1: like all the that's not melodramatic enough. You know. There
- 50:31Speaker 1: was a Titanic musical and I saw it when I
- 50:34Speaker 1: was a kid. Yeah, it was bad. What was it?
- 50:36Speaker 1: I think that some of the music I think that
- 50:38Speaker 1: it is it is regarded as a good piece of art.
- 50:43Speaker 1: Maybe I don't. I don't. I think it was kind
- 50:46Speaker 1: of a flop, although it might have won best musical
- 50:49Speaker 1: at the Tony's. I'm not sure and I won't look
- 50:51Speaker 1: it up, but I did see it because, as I said,
- 50:56Speaker 1: I was obsessed with Titanic and this was like still
- 50:59Speaker 1: in the years Titanic Mania, and like, I'm still obsessed
- 51:02Speaker 1: with Titanic. I I'm not saying that my name is
- 51:06Speaker 1: Rose because of Titanic, but it is certainly a contributing factor.
- 51:09Speaker 1: I mean, I would absolutely be rewatching if it was
- 51:12Speaker 1: an hour shorter. I will probably watch it tonight, like
- 51:15Speaker 1: while I'm repacking for a fire Island. Hopefully, oh my god,
- 51:18Speaker 1: hopefully the ferry doesn't sink. No, but we should do.
- 51:22Speaker 1: We should do um King of the World on the
- 51:25Speaker 1: Fire Island ferry. I'm just imagining us in the middle
- 51:28Speaker 1: of whatever. I don't know. Harbor is between Sayville and
- 51:31Speaker 1: the Pines on a floating door being like road, and
- 51:37Speaker 1: the water is actually only like six ft deep. Yeah,
- 51:40Speaker 1: and there's like a twink like drowning and sludge on
- 51:42Speaker 1: the slide. That's like help If the boat sinks, though,
- 51:46Speaker 1: what are we going to have to float on? I
- 51:48Speaker 1: guess like a case of lacroix. Someone brought a palette
- 51:53Speaker 1: of of keylime Lacroix. Yeah, but yeah, okay, but if
- 51:57Speaker 1: there's not room enough for both of us on it
- 52:00Speaker 1: on the Lacroix palette, who's surviving. I mean, I feel
- 52:06Speaker 1: like I have more survivalist instincts than you. No offense,
- 52:09Speaker 1: Oh so you would push me off and kill me. No,
- 52:11Speaker 1: that's not what I'm saying. I was just saying I
- 52:13Speaker 1: have more survivalist instincts. But I do think, yes, you
- 52:16Speaker 1: would push me off and kill me. Well, the reality
- 52:18Speaker 1: is that if we did, if we have our ferry
- 52:21Speaker 1: wrecked between Sayville and and Fire Island, I do think
- 52:27Speaker 1: you could swim to shore and survive. I think we
- 52:31Speaker 1: I think we both could could make it to shore.
- 52:33Speaker 1: I think we both could. I have definitely on Fire
- 52:36Speaker 1: Island been. There was one time on my birthday where
- 52:39Speaker 1: I was so high on ketamine that I went to
- 52:42Speaker 1: the ocean and swam out really really far. And then
- 52:47Speaker 1: that's kind of scared. And then realized once I got
- 52:49Speaker 1: that far out that all my energy is gone and
- 52:52Speaker 1: I did not know how I was going to get
- 52:54Speaker 1: back to shore. And that's so dumb, right, And I
- 52:59Speaker 1: was so high, I was so high, but so stupid.
- 53:05Speaker 1: I'm just floating in the middle. That's the kind of
- 53:07Speaker 1: dumb ship I used to do. I was so high
- 53:09Speaker 1: and I just like I just kind of like gave
- 53:11Speaker 1: it up to God, and eventually the waves did bring
- 53:14Speaker 1: me back to shore. Honestly, and honestly, nothing feels better
- 53:17Speaker 1: than being in the ocean on Kenemine. It is the
- 53:20Speaker 1: best feeling. I feel like it's so even if both
- 53:22Speaker 1: of us but not when you think you're about to die. Yeah,
- 53:24Speaker 1: even if both of us have the kind of um
- 53:27Speaker 1: ability to swim back to shore. I feel like the
- 53:29Speaker 1: weight of like all of my toiletries would would would
- 53:32Speaker 1: sink me to the ocean. Oh so you're still holding
- 53:34Speaker 1: onto your bags And I mean it's a lot of girl.
- 53:38Speaker 1: The combined cost of my toiletries when I travel hundreds
- 53:43Speaker 1: and hundreds and hundreds of dollars. Yes, more than the
- 53:47Speaker 1: heart of the ocean. Is my heart of the ocean. Okay,
- 53:52Speaker 1: It's like you and I did it again video. It's like, um,
- 53:57Speaker 1: I hand you like a like a Tata Harper Boister.
- 54:00Speaker 1: It's like I thought, the old woman moisturizer alone is
- 54:03Speaker 1: like a hundred and twenty dollars. It was gifted to
- 54:05Speaker 1: me Okay, so you should be okay, letting it sink
- 54:08Speaker 1: to the bottom of the whatever, Sayville Harbor. But I
- 54:11Speaker 1: think in this scenario we never would imagine. I think
- 54:14Speaker 1: in that Titanic as well, they never would have imagined
- 54:16Speaker 1: that they would die. They never thought I would draw.
- 54:19Speaker 1: I'm keeping my phone because it's waterproof, and that's that
- 54:21Speaker 1: everything else can sin. Phones actually really aren't waterproof. And
- 54:24Speaker 1: I learned that the hard way in Mexico City. I
- 54:27Speaker 1: mean not Mexico City, in Mexico when I was there. Um,
- 54:31Speaker 1: but I mean, I don't know what would weigh you down,
- 54:34Speaker 1: all your skims, um my baggage, not my my metaphor
- 54:40Speaker 1: emotional baggage, because I'd be like, okay, well if this
- 54:44Speaker 1: is I mean, this is a way out, So why not? Okay, okay?
- 54:47Speaker 1: And this is great because you know Joel has already
- 54:50Speaker 1: you know, laid the ground of the class warfare in
- 54:52Speaker 1: Fire Islands. So we have that component of the Titanic
- 54:55Speaker 1: allegory set for us. Um. Yeah, cool. So we're going
- 55:01Speaker 1: to green light this, Yeah, we are going to I
- 55:03Speaker 1: hope sell I don't know, free form. No, this podcast
- 55:06Speaker 1: is coming to you from beyond the grave because we
- 55:08Speaker 1: will be dying in a boat wreck tomorrow. We have
- 55:11Speaker 1: plans to off the coast of Fire Island and um,
- 55:15Speaker 1: it's been nice knowing you. Yeah, I love. Next week
- 55:26Speaker 1: we'll be back for a ribbon in conversation about pop culture.
- 55:31Speaker 1: And when we say pop we mean literally soda soda
- 55:35Speaker 1: called u pepsi seven up um. Yes, and we'll be
- 55:40Speaker 1: talking about soda with Cola Scola, so you know. And
- 55:45Speaker 1: the next week, drink your favorite soda or if you're
- 55:47Speaker 1: not a soda person, drink some water and drink drink
- 55:51Speaker 1: some water, bitch like a loser. Yeah, you can leave
