- 0:00Speaker 1: Anthony Rizzo, David Ross, Timothy Thomas, Buss Buss Bus Thinks
- 0:05Speaker 1: Us Buzz. Welcome back to another episode of the Lovable
- 0:17Speaker 1: Reunion podcasts. Me and my patna, David Ross, are joined
- 0:21Speaker 1: by my favorite, the one I've been looking to most
- 0:24Speaker 1: of interviewing one of my best friends in the entire world,
- 0:28Speaker 1: one of my best friends in baseball, the person who
- 0:31Speaker 1: means most of me in this game, and the biggest
- 0:34Speaker 1: unsung hero of the twenty sixteen World Series Championship team,
- 0:38Speaker 1: Timothy Thomas Boss. Wow.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, I'm so excited.
- 0:44Speaker 3: I've got to start this off. I gotta start this
- 0:46Speaker 3: one off because me and Bussy go so far back.
- 0:50Speaker 3: We were in a ball together in the Cal League, Sam Bernardino, What.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Was this like in the seventies? Done? Thanks?
- 0:59Speaker 3: What was it to two thousand? Yeah, two thousand. We
- 1:02Speaker 3: were in the Cal League before we got to the
- 1:04Speaker 3: big leagues. Yeah, I won a championship in the Colleague.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Bussy's going into his twenty fifth season in the big leagues.
- 1:13Speaker 1: He was our strength coach. Now he's a low level
- 1:17Speaker 1: field coordinator, I.
- 1:19Speaker 4: Think a mid level now level according to mind level staff.
- 1:23Speaker 1: ASSTEM with the with the anaheind Angels, the Angels, Bussy.
- 1:29Speaker 1: We talked about culture. We've talked about culture on this
- 1:31Speaker 1: he is. He was our leader on and off the field.
- 1:35Speaker 1: He was our ring leader and twenty sixteen my career
- 1:39Speaker 1: wouldn't have been the same without you. So I'm thanking
- 1:42Speaker 1: you before we get into all these stories.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But don't give me waterworks.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we're trying, but we've been we've been looking forward
- 1:49Speaker 3: to this. You've impacted a lot of people and you
- 1:52Speaker 3: know it. And your sense of humor, you're gonna crack
- 1:54Speaker 3: jokes the whole time, I know. But there's real there's
- 1:58Speaker 3: real leadership and culture building that you have such a
- 2:03Speaker 3: natural knack for and being been through winning and losing.
- 2:07Speaker 3: That you're just yourself and to everybody, nobody's a big deal.
- 2:12Speaker 3: You've had, you know, guys like Anthony and Trout and
- 2:15Speaker 3: Otani and so d Lee. You've had all the boys.
- 2:21Speaker 3: You've seen a lot of baseball, you've seen a lot
- 2:23Speaker 3: of characters, and uh, you're one of the best I've
- 2:25Speaker 3: ever been around as well, So kudos you. We've got
- 2:28Speaker 3: a championship that we talked about and then I came
- 2:31Speaker 3: back here and all of a sudden we win again.
- 2:34Speaker 2: That's odd.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, okay, good point.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You guys got me a championship.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So we're going to try to paint the picture of
- 2:43Speaker 1: what Tim Buss meant to our culture because from the
- 2:46Speaker 1: outside looking in, it's hard. It's really hard to tell,
- 2:49Speaker 1: like he was our strength coach, right, how much can
- 2:51Speaker 1: a strength coach really mean to a team? And hopefully
- 2:53Speaker 1: throughout this episode we could really paint that picture. Startling
- 2:58Speaker 1: spring training, bus Man in there and Buss, he's doing
- 3:03Speaker 1: these pre spring training skits, right, And there was a
- 3:08Speaker 1: picture I saw of you in the full green suit, uh,
- 3:13Speaker 1: coming out of vans. There was one time where in
- 3:16Speaker 1: spring training we were shooting him with paintball guns.
- 3:21Speaker 2: He's running.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I think he's just in a jockstrap.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Right. It was for charity.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It was for charity, of course, it was always for charity.
- 3:29Speaker 1: But we we had these stretches and before spring training,
- 3:34Speaker 1: Bussy would call the meeting and he would just talk
- 3:36Speaker 1: about stories and over the years, who put something on
- 3:40Speaker 1: Twitter the night before It was called the ball Bag
- 3:43Speaker 1: of the Day. And this started with Darwn Barney, right,
- 3:46Speaker 1: the ball bag. If you want to explain the ball
- 3:48Speaker 1: bag of the day story.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Yeah, it was just you know, if you do something stupid,
- 3:51Speaker 4: then we're going to call you out and everyone's gonna
- 3:53Speaker 4: have fun with it.
- 3:54Speaker 1: It was almost like kangaroo court, fine for the day.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And so do you.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Remember a good ball bang?
- 4:00Speaker 2: I remember a lot of good ball bags.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Carlos Marmal bought a three hundred dollars three hundred thousand
- 4:07Speaker 4: dollars Ferrari and put eighty seven octane when he fuiled
- 4:13Speaker 4: it up the first time, and so he gumed up
- 4:15Speaker 4: the pistons and it sat in the players parking lot
- 4:19Speaker 4: for the rest of spring training. No way, never, yes, yes, way,
- 4:22Speaker 4: We've had players think their cars got stolen. Yes, the
- 4:27Speaker 4: ball bags. I got ball bagged.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You guys crushed my car come out for stretch.
- 4:35Speaker 4: So usually I would come out for you know, I
- 4:37Speaker 4: go through the clubhouse and be like, hey, let's go stretch.
- 4:40Speaker 4: And this one day, I come out through the clubhouse
- 4:43Speaker 4: and there's no on there.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I got what's going on. So I go outside.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Everyone's out there and they start clapping for me or whatever,
- 4:50Speaker 4: and so I walk out and I look out and
- 4:53Speaker 4: my car is like flat as a pancake in the.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Right field, like the track, yes, just crushed.
- 5:01Speaker 4: And so I go, what what's going on here? And
- 5:06Speaker 4: they go, oh, we you know, we messed with your car.
- 5:08Speaker 4: I go, it's not my car, it's my girlfriend's cars.
- 5:13Speaker 2: And I drove her car that day.
- 5:15Speaker 4: I was driving the Cubs sixteen passenger most of the
- 5:19Speaker 4: spring and off season, and so I go, that's my
- 5:21Speaker 4: girlfriend's car.
- 5:23Speaker 2: It's like crushed it.
- 5:24Speaker 4: And so I had no idea what was going on.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I'm like, dude, like not funny. Panic. And so right
- 5:33Speaker 4: before the game started, all the players got together and
- 5:36Speaker 4: threw me a new set of car keys to a
- 5:39Speaker 4: nissanic Sterra that drove like seventeen years.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah, what what was the sport package car? You
- 5:45Speaker 1: just bought Mercedes for Porsche Grocer.
- 5:51Speaker 2: You're welcome.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Than you.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Bussy and I we would sit on the plane together.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I would always go up and sit with him and
- 6:00Speaker 1: just we would tell stories. We'd enjoy the playing rides,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and we became like brothers.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And when.
- 6:08Speaker 1: We would get to cities, him and I would always
- 6:10Speaker 1: go the next morning to work out at the gym.
- 6:12Speaker 1: We go to a regular gym and Forbes and Stanwick's
- 6:16Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is so monumental to us because on
- 6:20Speaker 1: that corner of downtown Pittsburgh at Forbes and Stanwick's, you
- 6:25Speaker 1: see everything, and there was a gold gym there. I
- 6:28Speaker 1: don't know if it's there anymore, but we go work
- 6:30Speaker 1: out in gold gym.
- 6:31Speaker 2: We've been in tank tops, just do it.
- 6:34Speaker 3: We all had main highlighter colored tank tops like pink
- 6:38Speaker 3: blue and bright yellow from the Gold gym down there, yep.
- 6:42Speaker 4: And we went there before the playing game the playoffs
- 6:46Speaker 4: against the Pirates.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Oh yeah, front and we had those and Riz had
- 6:50Speaker 5: to eat at Modes every time, welcome the most every time.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 4: So we go in there and be like they didn't
- 7:01Speaker 4: really say walking low's this time loud enough.
- 7:05Speaker 1: But those those times for me were like therapeutic because
- 7:08Speaker 1: like we would just go and talk to shit. We'd
- 7:10Speaker 1: be away from the field and we would just talk baseball,
- 7:14Speaker 1: we'd talk life and at some point what would I
- 7:17Speaker 1: do what? Our warm up was always on the treadmill.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I said it all the time. I lived my life
- 7:22Speaker 1: at a two point five, so I'd always warm up
- 7:25Speaker 1: on a tremill out at two point five. You never
- 7:26Speaker 1: want to get higher, you never want to get lower.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah, just start the walk. That was some of the
- 7:30Speaker 3: best that routine here with us, we're stead of looking
- 7:33Speaker 3: back for some of my favorite times because it got
- 7:35Speaker 3: me out of bed. On the road we went and
- 7:38Speaker 3: just moved around. Never crushed it, crushed it. He was
- 7:41Speaker 3: playing every day, so it's great for him and I
- 7:43Speaker 3: love the just the camaraderie. And I was joking around
- 7:46Speaker 3: having lunch after that and going back and.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just with the boys type stuff where we
- 7:50Speaker 4: get up and move around, and we.
- 7:53Speaker 1: We'd move around there in Pittsburgh, and then in Cincinnati
- 7:57Speaker 1: we would go to like these random gyms, right and
- 7:59Speaker 1: then there there was this little diner down below. It's
- 8:02Speaker 1: called Anne Hathways, Hathaways, Halthways.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I love Anne Hathaway.
- 8:07Speaker 1: But Hathaway's diner. It's a real old school diner in Cincinnati.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Good food, good people watching. It's like a little small underneath. Yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 1: that's a greasy smooth And Bussy was mad at me
- 8:18Speaker 1: one day and he's talking. She's like, you know how
- 8:20Speaker 1: many fucking people I brought fucking Hathways and I brought
- 8:24Speaker 1: fucking Joe Girardi. He starts listening off names. I think
- 8:28Speaker 1: he all pissed off of me because I don't know,
- 8:30Speaker 1: we were talking shit. But it was these little moments
- 8:33Speaker 1: that formed this brotherhood. And let's get into the sixties season.
- 8:37Speaker 1: What when did you know that that team was as
- 8:40Speaker 1: special as we all thought it was?
- 8:42Speaker 2: Well, it was special the whole way through.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I didn't realize like, holy shit, we're gonna win until
- 8:54Speaker 4: you guys did what you did against the Giants in
- 8:57Speaker 4: that in that game, and sooo.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Oh okay, okay, okay, yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 4: So in sixteen, you know as far as you know, like,
- 9:09Speaker 4: holy shit, I have a chance of winning. Gosh, you
- 9:13Speaker 4: just went through the whole year. You guys are so awesome,
- 9:16Speaker 4: and we grinded. I mean every day it was a grind,
- 9:19Speaker 4: but uh, to know that you guys were maybe gonna
- 9:24Speaker 4: win was was then. I do remember, you know, like
- 9:30Speaker 4: when ROSSI, Lester Lackey and when these dudes came in,
- 9:35Speaker 4: And the one thing that sucked for me was listening
- 9:39Speaker 4: to everyone come in and saying, uh, you don't you
- 9:44Speaker 4: don't know what it takes to win. You know what
- 9:46Speaker 4: it takes to win, and and I I felt like
- 9:49Speaker 4: I was a winner, but I really wasn't.
- 9:53Speaker 3: We went through a lot of losing.
- 9:54Speaker 4: Went through a lot of losing. You know, we won
- 9:57Speaker 4: some games and we you know, won some.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Some good teams. Yeah yeah, yeah, but not finishing.
- 10:03Speaker 4: But to be a winner and finish, and that's what
- 10:05Speaker 4: you preach when you came in. It's like you don't
- 10:08Speaker 4: know what it takes to win. And so when I
- 10:09Speaker 4: when I took myself and sat back and went, you
- 10:12Speaker 4: know what, I need to listen and just embrace everything
- 10:18Speaker 4: that you're bringing to the table. You won Leicester one,
- 10:21Speaker 4: you guys won. Let me take that in. And once
- 10:24Speaker 4: I did that and realized everything I could learn from
- 10:29Speaker 4: you guys, and then knowing like after that game in
- 10:32Speaker 4: San Francisco, that last inning, I was like, holy shit,
- 10:39Speaker 4: these guys, these guys are going to do it.
- 10:43Speaker 1: A show I'm so excited to see in July is
- 10:45Speaker 1: bon Jovi at the Garden.

- 12:38Speaker 3: I want to tell the story about the rehab story
- 12:42Speaker 3: and Jorge Lair, George Laiir Jersey when Cincinnati.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Guy fucking or hey, I would I would rehab George
- 12:54Speaker 4: because he that was you know, you'd have a hams
- 12:56Speaker 4: from my issue.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I mean look at it like that.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Anytime any time someone got hurt, anytime someone got he
- 13:04Speaker 1: was an absolute.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Yeah, it's always it's always the trainers of the strength
- 13:07Speaker 3: conditioning coaches.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I get twenty four hours where I would
- 13:11Speaker 4: just lose my ship because I thought at some point
- 13:15Speaker 4: that like a muscular injury or soft tissues, Yes I could,
- 13:19Speaker 4: I could, but you don't know what you guys do
- 13:21Speaker 4: when you go home. I mean, I had a good idea, but.
- 13:26Speaker 2: George, and I love George.
- 13:28Speaker 4: I mean, this guy came over here in a boat
- 13:30Speaker 4: that was smaller than the waves. So it's like, congratulations,
- 13:34Speaker 4: you made it over. I mean, unbelievable story. I love him,
- 13:38Speaker 4: and I got to celebrate his ten years in Anaheim
- 13:41Speaker 4: this last year.
- 13:42Speaker 3: That's right, and he's a World Series two times, two times, right, right? Yeah,
- 13:46Speaker 3: So George is rehabbing with a bad hammy right, and
- 13:49Speaker 3: he's on second base and I'm in the cage. Yes, George,
- 13:54Speaker 3: he's on the he's on the d L and what happened?
- 13:56Speaker 3: He's on the IL.
- 13:58Speaker 4: He's so we're doing you know, you got to ramp
- 14:01Speaker 4: him up to get them back, you get on field plays.
- 14:03Speaker 4: So during batting practice, I'm like, hey, George, just like
- 14:07Speaker 4: get some reads off the bases. All these guys are
- 14:12Speaker 4: taking VP in Cincinnati, and so I get him to
- 14:15Speaker 4: second base, and uh, you know, VP is like boom
- 14:19Speaker 4: every you know, twenty seconds, another pitch is being thrown,
- 14:23Speaker 4: and so I say to the VP thrower, I go, hey, fuck,
- 14:27Speaker 4: can you just like pau give me a pause?
- 14:29Speaker 2: I go George goof you know, happy happy hitting.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Yeah, so he's hitting, so Rossi's hitting, and so I go,
- 14:42Speaker 4: can you give me a pause? And Rossie comes flying
- 14:45Speaker 4: out of the shell and he's like, fuck you, now,
- 14:50Speaker 4: fuck you.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Do that ship on your own time.
- 14:52Speaker 3: Do that ship on your own time. Doesn't rehab.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Rehab George, she is just a young player.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, yeah, really yeah, I mean George wasn't but
- 15:03Speaker 4: a guy we know now.
- 15:04Speaker 3: But that's what we was funny, like minding your relationship
- 15:06Speaker 3: and knowing you and then we're trying I was like,
- 15:08Speaker 3: we're not rehabing guys at the show, trying to get
- 15:10Speaker 3: ready for a game. But that was like our team.
- 15:13Speaker 3: We would we would tell everybody fuck off. Absolutely, we're
- 15:16Speaker 3: talking about it. We talked about with bores, talking about.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Well when they when it came time to play, we
- 15:20Speaker 1: were funny strapped it, yeah, let's go.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Because we were all honest and upfront with each other,
- 15:24Speaker 3: like you, we didn't let we made fun of anybody.
- 15:27Speaker 3: If you got a line like that's your your superpower
- 15:31Speaker 3: has always been like you can get in there with
- 15:34Speaker 3: guys and dig and you make fun of yourself, but
- 15:37Speaker 3: make fun of them and everybody's laughing and loving you
- 15:39Speaker 3: for it, and it kept everybody honest. You know, it's
- 15:42Speaker 3: such a superpower.
- 15:43Speaker 1: We we every stretch before we went out for batting
- 15:46Speaker 1: practice or on the field, we would all get together
- 15:50Speaker 1: and Bussy would pick two guys or one guy, whatever
- 15:53Speaker 1: it was. And that year it was like, if you
- 15:56Speaker 1: say something negative about someone, because it's so easy to
- 15:59Speaker 1: go negative, you have to go what positive too positive?
- 16:02Speaker 1: So anytime you go negative, are two positives.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Two positive for every negative.
- 16:06Speaker 1: So we would he would start. He had this ultimate
- 16:08Speaker 1: feel of like the ebbs and flow of a season
- 16:11Speaker 1: of players, so he would know where guys were at
- 16:15Speaker 1: mentally and physically because he was so in tune with everyone,
- 16:19Speaker 1: so he knew when to pick on guys for that
- 16:21Speaker 1: little players huddle and be like, all right, say it
- 16:24Speaker 1: was me, uh Tony Rizzo blah blah blah, say some
- 16:27Speaker 1: good things about me, and then he would make everyone
- 16:29Speaker 1: in the circle say something nice or monumental about that player.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And it it was one of those things during that year.
- 16:36Speaker 3: What did we call that? What was it called? Circle? True?
- 16:38Speaker 3: What do we call it?
- 16:39Speaker 2: Well, it was just the circle of trust hru.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Okay, we called it something, but Bussy would be the
- 16:45Speaker 1: ringleader and all that and what that different guys over
- 16:49Speaker 1: the years, Like we're struggling. You sometimes you feel like
- 16:51Speaker 1: you're on an island and then you have you know,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you're eight seven to ten guys that are out there
- 16:56Speaker 1: for VP saying something nice and meaningful about you, and
- 16:59Speaker 1: it's like, oh shit, all right, like so good about
- 17:01Speaker 1: myself again today, Well you did that for me.
- 17:03Speaker 3: I don't know if you remember, like I, I cry
- 17:06Speaker 3: every time I talk about this, but I Game seven,
- 17:09Speaker 3: I was out there and you had the whole team
- 17:12Speaker 3: that was out there, say put me in the middle,
- 17:14Speaker 3: and everybody said nice things and each guy tell me
- 17:18Speaker 3: what you love about ROSSI say one nice thing about
- 17:20Speaker 3: ROSSI and it just like, you know, I remember crying
- 17:23Speaker 3: in that circle because everybody, you know, dudes don't tell
- 17:25Speaker 3: each other their feelings. But that was special to me.
- 17:27Speaker 3: That was a that was a that was a one
- 17:29Speaker 3: of my favorite things about that season was that day
- 17:31Speaker 3: and your your peers telling you cool shit to you.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Well yeah, and you know, it's it's always good to
- 17:37Speaker 4: hear I think that. Here's the deal is that you
- 17:41Speaker 4: guys are so awesome and it's like you don't think
- 17:46Speaker 4: that anything bothers you. And so when you hear something positive,
- 17:51Speaker 4: you guys, especially nowadays, and you don't hear, you know,
- 17:53Speaker 4: positive positivity, it's it's tough to get. And so to
- 17:58Speaker 4: hear how people actually feel about you, like to hear
- 18:04Speaker 4: like an Addison Russell or KB open up and just
- 18:08Speaker 4: be like, hey, you know, but and it was at
- 18:10Speaker 4: the end of the day.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It was just stretch.
- 18:12Speaker 1: It was it was just stretch talking about at the
- 18:16Speaker 1: end of the day, at the end of the day,
- 18:17Speaker 1: that was where life left. That was where those were
- 18:19Speaker 1: Sundays with Maury Okay, like the book Okay, Well, we
- 18:24Speaker 1: used to scream pause on a three to two count.
- 18:29Speaker 1: A whole someone would scream randomly pause tivity and then
- 18:34Speaker 1: what do we call it? On the base on a
- 18:36Speaker 1: three two count and the whole dugout. Whoever had a
- 18:39Speaker 1: three two count would be on the base on the
- 18:41Speaker 1: base on the day, and if the guy got on base.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Or walked or got a hit, the dug out.
- 18:47Speaker 3: It's like manifest We were manifesting it, right, and everybody
- 18:50Speaker 3: came from here.
- 18:50Speaker 4: And dude, to this day, if someone's up and they
- 18:53Speaker 4: have a three two count, it gos like on the
- 18:56Speaker 4: base on the base on basim stakes with you right, no.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Doubt, No doubt.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Neutrafoil is a number one dermatologist recommended hair growth supplement
- 19:06Speaker 1: brand and the official hair growth partner of Major League Baseball.

- 19:20Speaker 1: That's neutrofold dot com spelled n U t r a
- 19:24Speaker 1: f o l dot com promo code tlr.

- 19:36Speaker 3: I got a hat on because I need some Neutrafoil
- 19:37Speaker 3: in my life.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Think about how much better your hair is going to
- 19:40Speaker 1: look after taking neutrapoil.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Think about how much more money I would make about
- 19:43Speaker 3: your flow.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Well, my hair'st to look better, thinks to neutripil.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Oh man, so jealous. Well those weren't just stretches. It
- 19:51Speaker 3: was it was the reason why culture is built is
- 19:54Speaker 3: because you look forward. It wasn't like, oh, we got
- 19:57Speaker 3: to go stretch. Any guys late, Like, no, I'm I'm
- 19:59Speaker 3: not being late.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Yea, What is Bussy going to do to that?
- 20:01Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, exactly what's Bussy got up store and saying
- 20:04Speaker 3: with spring training you all like nobody was ever late
- 20:06Speaker 3: because everybody's out there can't wait for you to start
- 20:09Speaker 3: the fact that the strength guy started without stretch with
- 20:13Speaker 3: just you know, some kind of joke. You let my
- 20:17Speaker 3: son run. My son ran his whole I got it
- 20:21Speaker 3: on video. My son did a stand up routine for
- 20:24Speaker 3: his talent show at school and he was like fourth
- 20:27Speaker 3: grade and he was telling Bussy all he was out
- 20:31Speaker 3: there for spring break and he was telling you in
- 20:33Speaker 3: your office and you're like, you're running stretch today, And
- 20:36Speaker 3: he got out there and had the whole games rolling.
- 20:39Speaker 3: I got it on videos for my Fairit videos.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I pulled it up. It was crazy, Bussy. Bussy was
- 20:44Speaker 1: so good at like when you were dark. He knew
- 20:46Speaker 1: off the field you needed like a little bit of
- 20:48Speaker 1: a release, so.
- 20:49Speaker 2: He would be you. You can count him for everything
- 20:52Speaker 2: you take him. You take you out.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Literally prior whole sixteen roster has been out with you
- 20:57Speaker 1: and had a good night with you to not take
- 21:01Speaker 1: life so serious because what we were doing was break
- 21:05Speaker 1: We're breaking a curse there. Yeah, And the pressure, as
- 21:09Speaker 1: much as we say it didn't get to us at times,
- 21:11Speaker 1: it weighs heavy on everyone. The jersey wasts heavy at times.
- 21:14Speaker 1: And your ability to bring guys together, to bring them
- 21:20Speaker 1: off the field, to know when to go in when
- 21:24Speaker 1: not to go in was the best feel I've ever
- 21:26Speaker 1: seen in the game. And it's a lost art in
- 21:30Speaker 1: the game with chemistry and camaraderie, and I can say
- 21:34Speaker 1: with confidence that you were the absolute best at it.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Waterworks.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Let's let's let's get into like I want to hear
- 21:42Speaker 3: you talk about your experiences being in the game for
- 21:46Speaker 3: so long, being on a World Series team, but also
- 21:48Speaker 3: a lot of losing before that, like a lot, a
- 21:51Speaker 3: lot so so and so winning in there, and you've
- 21:54Speaker 3: seen winners. What do you look for now in players
- 21:57Speaker 3: that are like that guy's a winner, guys a winner
- 22:00Speaker 3: and going through the tough time, Like, what are some
- 22:03Speaker 3: of those traits that you've seen in players?
- 22:05Speaker 4: So I think before you guys came here, we had
- 22:07Speaker 4: lost like nine or twelve straight playoff games in that row.
- 22:12Speaker 4: I mean it was like nine win won a playoff game.
- 22:15Speaker 4: And I remember even Ted Lilly, you know, beat the
- 22:20Speaker 4: ship off of a water pipe at Dodger Stadium because
- 22:25Speaker 4: he was supposed to pitch the next day. And we
- 22:26Speaker 4: got beat and we were flooded out. The whole dugout
- 22:31Speaker 4: and locker room was flooded out. So I to go
- 22:32Speaker 4: around and watch Lily Cuckoo for Coca puffs. But no,
- 22:39Speaker 4: I you know, there was a lot of a lot
- 22:41Speaker 4: of losing, you know, until you win, so you only
- 22:45Speaker 4: you know, you only win one time, unless you're a
- 22:48Speaker 4: two time winner or three time winner. But as far
- 22:51Speaker 4: as players see, you guys never I did you know
- 22:55Speaker 4: we'd had players in there that had talked about the
- 22:58Speaker 4: curse and about not winning. We had we had I'd
- 23:01Speaker 4: heard that. When you guys came in, no one talked
- 23:05Speaker 4: about it. You just talked just talked about winning. And
- 23:08Speaker 4: it was like a winning mentality. And so with THEO
- 23:12Speaker 4: and the rickets and like it just so happens. It
- 23:15Speaker 4: all worked out where they built this new, huge complex
- 23:19Speaker 4: and everything was more professional and pro and you had
- 23:22Speaker 4: a great weight room, you had a great gatorade station
- 23:25Speaker 4: and all that, and it was like it just kind
- 23:29Speaker 4: of went you know, arm in arm and to listen
- 23:33Speaker 4: to be able to listen to guys that that have won.
- 23:37Speaker 4: I never won, So when you came in, it's like,
- 23:40Speaker 4: how can I tell someone what to do and what
- 23:43Speaker 4: it takes to win. But at this point, when I
- 23:45Speaker 4: go to sleep every night, I put my head on
- 23:47Speaker 4: a pillow and I'm a champion.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah because of you guys.
- 23:52Speaker 1: We the stories that's coming to my mind is when
- 23:55Speaker 1: we were in New York.
- 23:56Speaker 2: When we were in New York and it.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Was a long night, we had a day game or Sunday,
- 24:02Speaker 1: and that's when Joel Ostein happened just on TV in
- 24:06Speaker 1: the background, yes, and he was saying some sermon about
- 24:09Speaker 1: Misuba chef or something. He made cooking lines straight, and
- 24:14Speaker 1: for some reason I always stuck with us. Ritual became
- 24:19Speaker 1: like Sunday mornings, we gotta put on Joel Ostein Jelostine.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So we're in Pittsburgh, remember when Pittsburgh All Star break?
- 24:28Speaker 1: And before the All Star break, I'm going to paint
- 24:31Speaker 1: the picture of it. Tim Busses a two thousand and
- 24:34Speaker 1: five Newton High School.
- 24:35Speaker 4: Hall of Famer Newton High School, Nice Tony. Yeah, shout
- 24:39Speaker 4: out to Newton, Iowa.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Newton, Iowa, and Bussy's Bussy would tell a story all
- 24:45Speaker 1: the time when he was in what's.
- 24:47Speaker 2: College you go to?
- 24:49Speaker 1: I went to Iowa Wesley Wes, Iowa, Leslie right, and
- 24:53Speaker 1: he had a double header that day, and he went
- 24:55Speaker 1: ten for ten in the double header.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Yes, ten for tent.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Not easy to do it.
- 25:00Speaker 2: Ten for ten, Yes.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Ten for ten. And they lost both games. So they're
- 25:06Speaker 1: driving back. They're driving back in the in the minivan
- 25:10Speaker 1: around six and your coach was wearing your team out,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and you're.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Like, fuck, yeah, fucking talking to me. I went ten
- 25:17Speaker 2: for ten. Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 1: So in that Pittsburgh series, I was going off before
- 25:22Speaker 1: the All Star break, and there was a point where
- 25:25Speaker 1: I was one for one, two for two, and I
- 25:27Speaker 1: always said, I'm gonna fucking beat this ten for ten.
- 25:30Speaker 1: And at one point I was eight for eight in
- 25:32Speaker 1: that series, and every time I was like, I started
- 25:35Speaker 1: counting down, like two more, one more when I would
- 25:37Speaker 1: get on base right at busy and we were scuffling.
- 25:41Speaker 1: So the day before the All Star break, John Lester
- 25:44Speaker 1: comes in, We're watching Joelo's teams. Oh, I'm on the floor,
- 25:47Speaker 1: and he wears me out.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Wears you out.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Sunday getaway because he said the pigeon needed to pick
- 25:55Speaker 3: it up like that.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Oh and Bussy was there, just like she said, in
- 25:59Speaker 1: your little with death right there in the corner, and
- 26:01Speaker 1: just let me go to dine.
- 26:03Speaker 2: He walked out of here.
- 26:04Speaker 4: He was pretty pissed, I remember, and yes, we're waiting
- 26:08Speaker 4: for it, and it was It's like one of those
- 26:10Speaker 4: deals where it's like, oh my god.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I go to Hey, it's not that bad. It's
- 26:15Speaker 1: not that bad. Right, he'said, no, it's not that bad.
- 26:17Speaker 1: It's not he knows he's coming to you know what.
- 26:20Speaker 4: We're gonna put Joel on today and we're gonna make
- 26:22Speaker 4: shim a chef. We're gonna feel better about ourselves, make
- 26:25Speaker 4: her crooked line straight.
- 26:27Speaker 2: And then John came in and uh, it was quick.
- 26:31Speaker 1: But we we were also in Pittsburgh and we were
- 26:35Speaker 1: it may have been rain maybe in a rain delay
- 26:38Speaker 1: where we were in the cage and I started pitching
- 26:41Speaker 1: the Bussy. I was like, come on, Bussy, get in there,
- 26:43Speaker 1: take a couple of hacks and he has a good swing,
- 26:47Speaker 1: and he takes a swing and the fucking ball comes
- 26:50Speaker 1: right back up the middle like barely clips the L
- 26:54Speaker 1: screen and I'm like out, I go down. He's like,
- 26:57Speaker 1: that's it, I'm done. I on the he was about
- 27:00Speaker 1: to be released.
- 27:01Speaker 2: And it was like, I'm sick and tired of hearing
- 27:03Speaker 2: about You're in the high School Hall of Fame.
- 27:06Speaker 4: You fucking stink, You're a piece of ship. And I go,
- 27:10Speaker 4: throw me a couple of pitches and risks right, and
- 27:13Speaker 4: we had already you guys had clinched, so clinch, just
- 27:16Speaker 4: playing out the season.
- 27:17Speaker 2: And he goes, come on in, so I go.
- 27:20Speaker 4: I go in and he throws me a pitch and
- 27:23Speaker 4: it's probably it might be the best best FUCKATUT scene
- 27:32Speaker 4: and just nick the L screen. It would have taken
- 27:35Speaker 4: him out, broken his teeth and he wouldn't have been
- 27:37Speaker 4: part of the plane.
- 27:38Speaker 2: You would have got twenty sixteen, you would have got released.
- 27:42Speaker 3: He called, that's that's it. Well, that's the funny sting
- 27:46Speaker 3: about about your mannerisms.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Like that's it.
- 27:49Speaker 3: I'm done, I'm done over it.
- 27:51Speaker 1: You were so good at like you knew when to
- 27:54Speaker 1: push guys, you knew when to piss guys off, and
- 27:56Speaker 1: when they were able to be pissed off. I remember
- 27:59Speaker 1: it was early in my career. We were in New
- 28:02Speaker 1: York again and Red Johnson was on our teament. He
- 28:05Speaker 1: was struggling. This is all time top three. Ree Johnson's
- 28:11Speaker 1: like ever venting a little bit about his swing, and Boss,
- 28:13Speaker 1: He's like, well, why don't you just fucking get up
- 28:15Speaker 1: on the plate, like and just crowd the plate. You
- 28:19Speaker 1: fucking just get up or you're throwing a VP and
- 28:22Speaker 1: re Johnson you he went off.
- 28:25Speaker 3: Shut the fuck.
- 28:26Speaker 1: He like strength coach day in your fucking lane, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Ree and I were so close to his old shade
- 28:32Speaker 4: stadium was it was like yeah, and so Reid would
- 28:35Speaker 4: like infamously be way off the dish and so he
- 28:40Speaker 4: was so awesome. And I remember when he played for
- 28:42Speaker 4: the Blue Jays and he actually single handedly won a
- 28:45Speaker 4: game against us, and I was like so happy to
- 28:48Speaker 4: have him with the Cubs. And I was like, and
- 28:51Speaker 4: he kept bitching it. It's like when players keep bitching
- 28:55Speaker 4: around you and you listen to like, d Le d
- 28:58Speaker 4: lea bitch. A couple of times, it's like bitch, and
- 29:02Speaker 4: then you would say something, be like shut the fuck
- 29:04Speaker 4: talking to me. Those deals they're venting, And I couldn't
- 29:11Speaker 4: listen to anymore, And I was like, dude, won't you
- 29:14Speaker 4: just close up on the dish a little bit?
- 29:17Speaker 2: He goes, fuck you, And so.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Like three days later he goes like his next next start.
- 29:25Speaker 4: And in the New York Times he says, well, I
- 29:29Speaker 4: just listen to my or strength conditioning coach.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Bussy told me I need.
- 29:32Speaker 3: To shout out, oh god, it.
- 29:37Speaker 2: Was Read Johnson. But I did it with d Lee.
- 29:40Speaker 2: It didn't go over real well with d Lee.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Well those are the stories, like you, Darbish. Harvish comes
- 29:46Speaker 1: over and kind of was quiet in his shell here
- 29:50Speaker 1: and you and I are getting to know him, and
- 29:51Speaker 1: the next thing you know, you're getting Darbish to partake
- 29:55Speaker 1: in some Yeah we made inning cigarettes and like from
- 30:00Speaker 1: that point on with the Cubs and even like still
- 30:03Speaker 1: he's yeah, I still check in with him, saying, hey,
- 30:05Speaker 1: make sure you keep doing your thing, because too, I
- 30:07Speaker 1: still have a smoke break with him. Yeah, his darvishes
- 30:11Speaker 1: first start. I was on the IL and we're down
- 30:14Speaker 1: in Cincinnati. Cincinnati had right off the bench in Cincinnati
- 30:19Speaker 1: is their their grounds crew room. So I'm talking to
- 30:23Speaker 1: Darvish me coal hamils, and Bussy you're talking to Darbish.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm like Cole or you what was Japan? Like, did
- 30:29Speaker 1: you smoke before games? Could you hear all these things?
- 30:32Speaker 2: Oh? Yeah?
- 30:32Speaker 1: But here they don't let me and like I don't know,
- 30:35Speaker 1: like I want to. I'm like, well, dude, do it tomorrow.
- 30:38Speaker 1: He said no, I can't. I'm like, we're doing it tomorrow.
- 30:41Speaker 1: So we go down and Bussy, Cole and Darvish. I'm there,
- 30:48Speaker 1: but they're the ones that are smoking. Yeah, and Cole
- 30:52Speaker 1: hamils Yeah, end up smoking a cigarette. After his first
- 30:55Speaker 1: out or before his first inning. He goes out and shoves.
- 30:58Speaker 1: Then it's the second an. I think he threw seven
- 31:00Speaker 1: scoreless and then from that point on it was seven
- 31:03Speaker 1: or eight scoreless. And Bussy had to wear it every.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Time I go hold of Why am I in the hailing?
- 31:12Speaker 1: So it got to the point at Wrigley there was
- 31:15Speaker 1: no good spots. So in one of our personnel's office
- 31:19Speaker 1: they put in a smoke thing that inhaled the smoke
- 31:22Speaker 1: out because darbish had to go in between. But because
- 31:26Speaker 1: of you, like, he doesn't feel comfortable enough to.
- 31:29Speaker 3: Do that because of you. Now he has cancer.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Because of me.
- 31:34Speaker 3: I got no, But that's because you were one of
- 31:36Speaker 3: the boys. Dude, and you got it. You got the grind.
- 31:40Speaker 3: I told you the other night, like only strength coach
- 31:43Speaker 3: ever had come in. It's like, man, I don't feel
- 31:44Speaker 3: like working day, get the thing in. Let's bang this out. Bussy.
- 31:47Speaker 2: He's like, well.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Don't you don't you know, you work out, your grinder,
- 31:50Speaker 3: you work, You're in here every day like your body's
- 31:52Speaker 3: telling you. Don't come in like you had a feel
- 31:55Speaker 3: that is, you know, Hall of Fame feel and the
- 31:58Speaker 3: fact of knowing how guys what they needed. Do you
- 32:01Speaker 3: have a favorite sixteen story. I'd love to hear a
- 32:05Speaker 3: Riz sixteen story, But do you have Yeah?
- 32:09Speaker 4: First off, you know, you know, when you have douchebags,
- 32:13Speaker 4: you're like, well you need to work out because you
- 32:16Speaker 4: don't work out, you're a douchebag. But when you have
- 32:18Speaker 4: pros and like I don't feel like working, I'm like, then,
- 32:21Speaker 4: don't like you're going to get more out of not
- 32:23Speaker 4: working out.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Yea, and Tony was the you know, the king of wanted.
- 32:27Speaker 4: To work out the mornings and grinding it out and
- 32:30Speaker 4: doing all that stuff. But you know, twenty sixteen, I
- 32:35Speaker 4: think that remember when we went We're in Cincinnati and
- 32:40Speaker 4: we had to work out and all you get. You
- 32:43Speaker 4: were there when Dexter and KB and everything try to
- 32:47Speaker 4: go to halfways and.
- 32:50Speaker 2: It's like all of a sudden, the it's like new
- 32:52Speaker 2: kids on the block were for fat Guy.
- 32:55Speaker 4: It was like flooded. It's like, Okay, this isn't gonna
- 32:58Speaker 4: this isn't gonna work out. And it was just a matter.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Of all the fans. Yes, crazy that that year was
- 33:05Speaker 1: like insane.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it literally felt like a little bit like the Beatles.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I don't know, but they was fanning everywhere. Yeah, you know.
- 33:12Speaker 2: And sixteen.
- 33:15Speaker 4: It was such so many stories like riz would come up.
- 33:20Speaker 4: I've never seen anyone eat spaghetti with ranch dressing.
- 33:25Speaker 2: On the planes.
- 33:27Speaker 4: That would be like, what the fuck are we doing?
- 33:30Speaker 2: Your strength coach? Here, can you lay off? The ranch
- 33:33Speaker 2: dressing was spaghetti? Yeah, you had you had.
- 33:37Speaker 1: To dress the we were playing to be.
- 33:41Speaker 3: The fat ass where they were retired everybody the way
- 33:44Speaker 3: you ate, But you look great, bro, you thin great?
- 33:47Speaker 2: Well Ver sixteen was great.
- 33:48Speaker 4: It was It was awesome, but it was honestly it
- 33:51Speaker 4: was a learning experience.
- 33:53Speaker 2: But you know, the stretch and all that stuff.
- 33:58Speaker 4: That was just about the boys, you know, for the
- 34:00Speaker 4: boys f TB, for the boys, because it's just it's
- 34:07Speaker 4: it's about you guys. It's such a long season, as
- 34:10Speaker 4: we know, and so if you can make this like
- 34:13Speaker 4: as much of a family and that type of stuff.
- 34:16Speaker 4: And it's good to get away too. The four months
- 34:19Speaker 4: away from everyone's good too. But those seven eight months
- 34:24Speaker 4: when you're together, it's it's really it's it's so key,
- 34:28Speaker 4: and it's so.
- 34:28Speaker 3: You got to mix it up.
- 34:29Speaker 2: You got to keep it light, yes, And.
- 34:31Speaker 3: That was you guys allowed me to do a bunch
- 34:33Speaker 3: and I think Joe allowed us to do that, right
- 34:36Speaker 3: And and and talk about Joe. You you've been with
- 34:40Speaker 3: Joe for a little while, multiple years, like tell us
- 34:45Speaker 3: about how he impacted.
- 34:46Speaker 4: Ohoe was awesome, so we uh the first time I
- 34:49Speaker 4: met him, Joe was so eclectic.
- 34:52Speaker 2: He came out and you know.
- 34:55Speaker 4: As a strength coach, you gotta be careful like you gotta,
- 34:58Speaker 4: you know with coaches, and like, how can I you know,
- 35:02Speaker 4: can I train these guys during the day within your
- 35:05Speaker 4: allotted time of working him out?
- 35:07Speaker 2: How can we do this?
- 35:08Speaker 4: And Joe for some of that, Joey came out and
- 35:12Speaker 4: you know, we had the agility field, we have the speakers,
- 35:17Speaker 4: and I said, you know I would love because some
- 35:21Speaker 4: some managers I've been with be like no music, stretch
- 35:25Speaker 4: and take an hour and all this stuff.
- 35:28Speaker 2: And Joe came out and he goes, oh, I love this.
- 35:33Speaker 4: You got speakers and stuff and like led Zeppelin, and
- 35:36Speaker 4: it's like fuck yes, and so he goes, you do
- 35:42Speaker 4: you get as crazy as you can for the boys,
- 35:45Speaker 4: They'll love it. He goes, I want them. I want
- 35:48Speaker 4: them to be themselves. I want people. Joe was so
- 35:52Speaker 4: into guys being comfortable, being uncomfortable if you will embrace uncomfortable,
- 36:01Speaker 4: and uh, that was Joe and he and I ran
- 36:05Speaker 4: with it.
- 36:06Speaker 2: You that was you know, like yeah, we went yeah, well.
- 36:11Speaker 1: That was a match made in Heaven for you match
- 36:13Speaker 1: I mean, and it couldn't have been a better.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Still is still is?
- 36:16Speaker 4: I love him and I wouldn't be sitting here talking
- 36:20Speaker 4: to you guys if it wasn't for Joe Madden.
- 36:22Speaker 2: I agree, we wouldn't be sitting here.
- 36:25Speaker 4: I don't think the boys would have I don't know
- 36:29Speaker 4: if we were breaking then.
- 36:30Speaker 3: That's what we talked about, how every person on the
- 36:34Speaker 3: team has impacted us.
- 36:36Speaker 1: Winning some weight like you really needed all not just
- 36:40Speaker 1: the players either, like it was coaches, personnel. It was
- 36:43Speaker 1: Otis and his staff, all of our coaches, every single
- 36:47Speaker 1: person that.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Ski, I mean, how about Hintsky.
- 36:52Speaker 1: It's just all a cast of characters. And we we
- 36:57Speaker 1: would work out all the time on the road, right,
- 36:58Speaker 1: it was like religious, like we would go and you
- 37:01Speaker 1: were saying, like I didn't feel like working out. There'd
- 37:03Speaker 1: be days where I didn't feel like working out, but no, no,
- 37:05Speaker 1: come on, we gotta we gotta hit it a little bit.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And actually, you know, we have like this incredible workout.
- 37:10Speaker 1: I feel amazing. I didn't want to do a thing,
- 37:12Speaker 1: but I got up to go because of our What
- 37:17Speaker 1: that time meant to me in my career was just
- 37:20Speaker 1: like I wouldn't trade it for the world. I wouldn't
- 37:21Speaker 1: trade it for another home run. I wouldn't trade it
- 37:24Speaker 1: for anything because that time was the best time of
- 37:28Speaker 1: my career.
- 37:28Speaker 4: And and you know, I mean remember we would like
- 37:32Speaker 4: wake up and I would usually go a bit at
- 37:34Speaker 4: four or five in the morning, and.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I'd be He'd be so fucking His workouts sometimes would
- 37:41Speaker 1: be based on how long he stayed out, and if
- 37:44Speaker 1: he stayed out late, we were in again another New
- 37:47Speaker 1: York store. We're in New York. We're at an equinox
- 37:49Speaker 1: in New York, or doesn't take me him and I
- 37:52Speaker 1: think Dexter maybe, and we're working out and you're not
- 37:58Speaker 1: allowed to have a trainer, and.
- 38:00Speaker 2: The and Ron Darling's there, like so Ron.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Darling nan announce it for the Mets walks in either
- 38:06Speaker 1: before or after. So we're again after it, me and
- 38:09Speaker 1: him in Dexter. He's pissed off because it's New York.
- 38:13Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, we gotta work out in New York.
- 38:15Speaker 1: Usually in the major cities you take those days off.
- 38:19Speaker 1: And he's busting me. He's fucked dude, this, this, this,
- 38:22Speaker 1: and this trainer comes over and goes, excuse me, sir,
- 38:26Speaker 1: you're not allowed to train in here.
- 38:27Speaker 2: He's like, oh, no, we're not training.
- 38:29Speaker 1: And the guy walks aways, all right, now give me
- 38:31Speaker 1: ten more push and I'm like he stopped, Like I'm embarrassed, right, yeah,
- 38:37Speaker 1: And so we walk out and go, hey, thank you
- 38:40Speaker 1: guys for letting me train these dudes.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:42Speaker 4: And so that night I'm up in the clap the
- 38:45Speaker 4: clubhouse and during the game and I hear Ron Darling going,
- 38:49Speaker 4: these guys, these cubs, these guys, they're they're into it,
- 38:53Speaker 4: they're aggressive, they're they're locked in.
- 38:55Speaker 2: You know.
- 38:56Speaker 4: I saw their trainer and they're guys working out this morning.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I was like, I was hung over to.
- 39:01Speaker 4: The Bejesus screaming at these guys like, let's fucking.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Go so mad. I remember the one we went to
- 39:08Speaker 3: in San Diego, that little trip and we took pictures.
- 39:10Speaker 3: Tony gwen Stotts statue. Good Eye came.
- 39:13Speaker 2: Our our second are.
- 39:15Speaker 1: We had a game and then an off day in
- 39:17Speaker 1: twenty sixteen and Anaheim and we went all to the
- 39:20Speaker 1: Equinox and Laguna Beach or wherever we were, and there
- 39:24Speaker 1: was an upstairs and at the time, we were all
- 39:26Speaker 1: feeling good. It's right off the spring and we're all
- 39:28Speaker 1: good shape. So we're upstairs outside shirts shirts off, working
- 39:33Speaker 1: out and there's these monkey bars and I'm gonna do
- 39:36Speaker 1: the monkey bars.
- 39:36Speaker 2: You're done.
- 39:38Speaker 1: I had two blisters here and here I'm both hands
- 39:42Speaker 1: that I was grinding through, and I'm like, oh fuck.
- 39:46Speaker 2: But it's a good story for the boys. Door monkey
- 39:49Speaker 2: bars out, r Uss. I mean it does. Yeah.
- 39:51Speaker 3: So and you're released, you're done, You're fired.
- 39:55Speaker 4: Yeah, one cut, because you can't take a hack. Done bussy.
- 39:59Speaker 1: When we we went down three to one in the
- 40:02Speaker 1: World Series. I remember coming to you in the weight
- 40:06Speaker 1: room and just venting like, we're ant fucking doing this.
- 40:10Speaker 1: We ain't doing this, like we just got swept last year.
- 40:13Speaker 1: We're not We're not losing this. And and that's when
- 40:16Speaker 1: we started channeling the Rocky like, yeah, I was like, Bussy,
- 40:19Speaker 1: tomorrow we walk in here, I want Rocky on every
- 40:22Speaker 1: fucking TV Rocky, none of his baseball bullshit. Just put
- 40:25Speaker 1: Rocky on and you embraced it. You said some stuff,
- 40:29Speaker 1: but what made you believe that we can actually do that?
- 40:33Speaker 4: And because Rossay and I were down three games someone, Yeah,
- 40:36Speaker 4: in San Fernandino in two thousand, it's a lang Master Jayhawks,
- 40:42Speaker 4: Let's Seattle Marya.
- 40:43Speaker 2: That's what you pulled.
- 40:44Speaker 1: That's the inspiration you pulled from absolutely to.
- 40:47Speaker 3: Me, had been there, yeah last time in two thousand. Yeah,
- 40:50Speaker 3: this is sixteen years later.
- 40:53Speaker 4: Yeah, So honestly, the inspiration was you guys, because you
- 40:57Speaker 4: wanted to do that.
- 40:59Speaker 2: We did it, you.
- 41:02Speaker 4: Know, the Rocky stuff, naked dance and doing that stuff.
- 41:05Speaker 4: And then if you remember when we traveled to Cleveland,
- 41:10Speaker 4: it was Halloween. Yeah, it was Halloween. So we had
- 41:13Speaker 4: to dress up, and it wasn't like, hey, we're just
- 41:16Speaker 4: going there for one game. I think I wore like
- 41:19Speaker 4: assless chaps and everything.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Whatever. So it was but.
- 41:25Speaker 4: It was honestly, wasn't it just a feel of like
- 41:31Speaker 4: just another game and we knew you win that you
- 41:36Speaker 4: win the first game and it's over.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Yeah, well was the key for sure and what everybody's
- 41:44Speaker 3: talking about. But that's what we've talked about. It really did.
- 41:48Speaker 3: There was no panic in the room. There was no like, yeah,
- 41:52Speaker 3: we took a late flight, so like a trick or treat,
- 41:54Speaker 3: like Joe was still treating it like normal and just
- 41:57Speaker 3: where your Halloween costume on the plane? Yeah yeah, I
- 41:59Speaker 3: would dress shore had short sweatshirt on.
- 42:01Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah no. So it was. It was so good.
- 42:04Speaker 2: But and then we came out for.
- 42:09Speaker 4: Game six and you guys took it to them, and
- 42:13Speaker 4: my goodness.
- 42:14Speaker 3: I remember thinking of the Raj Homer, where were you?
- 42:19Speaker 2: I took a knee. I physically heard so bad.
- 42:23Speaker 3: I went to the ground.
- 42:23Speaker 2: I'm not kidding.
- 42:24Speaker 3: You, really in the in the in the weight room,
- 42:27Speaker 3: the room.
- 42:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I was in the weight room and I took
- 42:30Speaker 4: a knee because I'd probably just done a rally like
- 42:34Speaker 4: a rally beer for.
- 42:37Speaker 3: A twelve time.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Last we're doing I got it and a rally dip
- 42:43Speaker 4: and whatever. And I physically it's the first time I
- 42:50Speaker 4: took a knee. But you know, damn it, this game
- 42:53Speaker 4: you can just feel it. Even as fans. I think
- 42:57Speaker 4: you can just feel when ships go a little sideways.
- 43:00Speaker 2: You can feel that.
- 43:02Speaker 4: I could, Yeah, sure where I was in there, and
- 43:04Speaker 4: I was like this, I got we got figure out
- 43:07Speaker 4: how to change this feeling. But something doesn't feel right here.
- 43:12Speaker 4: And this fucking guy and I talked to raj I
- 43:16Speaker 4: think it was last year because he works for the.
- 43:19Speaker 1: It's funny, we all he won the World Series and
- 43:21Speaker 1: everyone for some reason, you know what I mean?
- 43:25Speaker 3: Serious?
- 43:26Speaker 4: Yes, and I and I saw him and I said, dude,
- 43:31Speaker 4: I just have to know this from my well being.
- 43:34Speaker 4: I go, how the fuck did you hit that ball
- 43:38Speaker 4: like that? And he goes, I just I got a tip.
- 43:43Speaker 4: I got a tip and and he goes, it worked
- 43:45Speaker 4: out and he hit it right off the fucking camp
- 43:48Speaker 4: and Lebron.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Everybody brings up Lebron.
- 43:54Speaker 4: Ron.
- 43:54Speaker 2: It's like a fucking Jordan. I love him.
- 43:56Speaker 1: I remember you used to always tell a story. You
- 44:00Speaker 1: still always tell a story in three when you guys
- 44:02Speaker 1: were in the NLCS, first the Marlins, and it was
- 44:05Speaker 1: game seven.
- 44:07Speaker 2: In Miami, right well.
- 44:10Speaker 1: But or whatever whatever game it was, and you said,
- 44:14Speaker 1: there was like this quiet in the stadium pre game,
- 44:17Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, the who Eminence Front comes
- 44:21Speaker 1: and on our playing rides we would jam out, we
- 44:25Speaker 1: would jam there, we'd be playing everything. But whenever Eminence
- 44:29Speaker 1: Front came on it I always brought me back to
- 44:30Speaker 1: that story. And in game seven on the line, I
- 44:35Speaker 1: didn't really go out much during the playoffs to warm up,
- 44:38Speaker 1: but Game seven was like this is it, Like I'm
- 44:40Speaker 1: gonna go and take this moment in and I hit
- 44:43Speaker 1: and I come out to do my pregame, uh stretching stuff,
- 44:46Speaker 1: and we're on the line and Phil Collins into the
- 44:49Speaker 1: night games and like from that story you told me,
- 44:52Speaker 1: Eminence Front. For me, it was like the whole stadium
- 44:57Speaker 1: got quiet, and it was just like all I could
- 45:00Speaker 1: hear was this song and everything around me was moving
- 45:03Speaker 1: so slow, and I was just looking around at everyone
- 45:06Speaker 1: like I'm.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Not locked the fucking right.
- 45:09Speaker 1: I just did my pregame, my pregame Upper and Downer.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I did my pregame shot him, shot him, shot him,
- 45:17Speaker 1: Wood for reserve and five hour energies. I'm flying high,
- 45:22Speaker 1: but everything around me small, and I'm just looking at guys,
- 45:25Speaker 1: like looking in their eyes, like we fucking got to this,
- 45:28Speaker 1: and like that was my moment, like where you're saying
- 45:30Speaker 1: eminence front where the YEAH column and I just looking
- 45:33Speaker 1: at you and what we had been through, just together
- 45:37Speaker 1: on this team and being together for so long. It
- 45:39Speaker 1: was just like when we did win, it was it
- 45:42Speaker 1: was fucking I just wanted to do everything for you,
- 45:46Speaker 1: both of you. Honestly, your career is over. You and
- 45:50Speaker 1: I are like this, we're brothers, so I love you too. Yeah,
- 45:55Speaker 1: an emotion, but bussy. When Roger hits the home run,
- 45:59Speaker 1: we go back into the weight room. Yeah, And I
- 46:01Speaker 1: remember my weight room experience was with the rain delay
- 46:06Speaker 1: and I had just re upped on my pregame mix
- 46:09Speaker 1: to like get myself going, and I just remember talking
- 46:13Speaker 1: to you like we ain't fucking going down like this, Yeah,
- 46:15Speaker 1: no fucking way. And then all of a sudden, like
- 46:18Speaker 1: people started congreging, J had calls everyone in. You were
- 46:22Speaker 1: the only non YEAH player in there, that's.
- 46:26Speaker 3: All I remember.
- 46:26Speaker 1: You were the only non player in there.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Think about this.
- 46:29Speaker 1: This is how much he meant to us players that
- 46:32Speaker 1: we have a players only meeting. That is just Jay
- 46:36Speaker 1: Hay speaking his mind. And you're in there, So what
- 46:39Speaker 1: is that like for you to see all the waterworks
- 46:42Speaker 1: going on?
- 46:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and that's all I remember walking in and the
- 46:45Speaker 3: players only. I was like, there's Bussy. I was like, oh,
- 46:47Speaker 3: Bussy's fine, that's all I remember.
- 46:49Speaker 2: You were in the like, get this fucking guy out.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Yeah, we were, we were, We were in the trends in.
- 46:54Speaker 3: The back back left.
- 46:56Speaker 2: I remember to this day.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Cleveland has changed their weight room, these douchebags they changed.
- 47:02Speaker 2: But no, I used to go in there and.
- 47:04Speaker 1: Be like, this is where I was this every time
- 47:07Speaker 1: I went in there after.
- 47:08Speaker 2: That's where I sat right there during the rein.
- 47:10Speaker 4: But the best part was it was one of those
- 47:13Speaker 4: moments where I was like, I was doing one of
- 47:16Speaker 4: these and a coach tried to come in and Jay
- 47:20Speaker 4: Hay said, no, get your fucking ass right out of here.
- 47:23Speaker 4: And so when he think and so I'm like, I'm
- 47:28Speaker 4: doing the Jim Belushi like should I stay?
- 47:31Speaker 2: Should I go?
- 47:31Speaker 4: And I start walking out and Jay Hay goes, no, no, no,
- 47:36Speaker 4: you're one of us, and you're fucking staying right in
- 47:38Speaker 4: here and you're talking, and I go, okay, So I
- 47:42Speaker 4: stuck in there and I sat there and watched like
- 47:45Speaker 4: THEO and everyone walk by as you guys were doing
- 47:49Speaker 4: doing your thing.
- 47:50Speaker 3: So that was what do you remember about what was
- 47:53Speaker 3: being said?
- 47:54Speaker 4: In Man, that was epic. What was being said was
- 47:58Speaker 4: I knew the game was over. So we we've all
- 48:04Speaker 4: seen these tides shift. And that's one thing in baseball
- 48:07Speaker 4: is that when when the momentum turns, how can you
- 48:12Speaker 4: turn it back?
- 48:14Speaker 2: In baseball? It's not like basketball or football. It's baseball.
- 48:17Speaker 4: So it's like, how can we figure out how to
- 48:19Speaker 4: get it back in our favor on the road, which
- 48:23Speaker 4: really at that point was fifty to fifty road game
- 48:27Speaker 4: and you couldn't do that. But you guys, that rain,
- 48:32Speaker 4: that Ron Santo rain delay was like, it's a godsend, Yeah, godsend.
- 48:39Speaker 4: And it was like when they came in, what was
- 48:41Speaker 4: it eight minutes, twelve seventeen seventeen minutes?
- 48:45Speaker 2: Joe West called it.
- 48:46Speaker 1: To this day, whenever I see Joe West, when I
- 48:48Speaker 1: saw him, I was thank them. I tell hey, Joe, yeah,
- 48:51Speaker 1: you called the greatest rain delay in the history of
- 48:53Speaker 1: the game.
- 48:53Speaker 4: Thank you, unbelievable, and they and they came and came in, said,
- 48:57Speaker 4: you know, we're playing seventeen minutes or whatever, and then
- 49:00Speaker 4: Ben he hit the spinner that you know, kicked off.
- 49:03Speaker 3: What do you remember about what said and what the boys?
- 49:07Speaker 2: So you remember, yes, I do, Yes, I remember all that,
- 49:12Speaker 2: Jay Hay.
- 49:13Speaker 4: It was that that speech was more about the boys
- 49:19Speaker 4: in that room in the city of Chicago than it
- 49:23Speaker 4: was about anything else. And it was not that dudes,
- 49:27Speaker 4: you know, it's one of those deals where you have speeches.
- 49:29Speaker 2: It's like I'm already trying. I'm trying. It's not like
- 49:32Speaker 2: we're not trying. But it was like, hey, let's.
- 49:35Speaker 4: Remember who the fuck we are, you fuckers. You got
- 49:38Speaker 4: this ship, Yes, you got this ship. You got the
- 49:42Speaker 4: best players in baseball, you got the best position players,
- 49:47Speaker 4: the best pitchers, the best relievers. We like four of
- 49:51Speaker 4: the best catchers.
- 49:54Speaker 3: Well he was catch. Yeah.
- 49:56Speaker 2: It was like, just fucking get it done.
- 49:59Speaker 4: Don't take this moment away from me, because you walk
- 50:03Speaker 4: out of here as losers and you may not get
- 50:07Speaker 4: it back. And so you have you have this moment,
- 50:10Speaker 4: you have this fucking moment when we walk out of
- 50:12Speaker 4: these doors. And you guys, it's one thing to talk
- 50:15Speaker 4: about a moment, and that's another thing to do the moment.
- 50:19Speaker 4: And it was another thing to take care of the
- 50:23Speaker 4: fucking Cuban missile. Remember that take care of the Cuban
- 50:28Speaker 4: missile that day. This guy athletic life on the line
- 50:34Speaker 4: for absolutely so. It was all the chibbing is our him,
- 50:39Speaker 4: the city, the boys, let's just get.
- 50:41Speaker 3: It done and we're in a fucking momentum change And
- 50:45Speaker 3: it did.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and we played. It takes a long way to
- 50:49Speaker 2: it takes a long way to the top. And then
- 50:54Speaker 2: you boys, you did it, man so and I appreciate.
- 50:57Speaker 1: The bus ride home, the plane ride, the pictures of
- 51:02Speaker 1: the trophy on the plane, all of it was special.
- 51:06Speaker 1: We get to the parade and we have this that's
- 51:09Speaker 1: the greatest parade ever. I was just watching some videos
- 51:11Speaker 1: of it, but when I spoke, it was like, you know,
- 51:14Speaker 1: there was a couple of people that were so monumental
- 51:16Speaker 1: to me, You and you, So. I gave you a
- 51:19Speaker 1: shout out, and then I give Bussy the shout out
- 51:23Speaker 1: of He's like, you gave me a fucking shout out
- 51:26Speaker 1: front of five million people.
- 51:28Speaker 2: He was made my life. I still hear about it.
- 51:31Speaker 1: It's just the bond that we had can never be broken,
- 51:36Speaker 1: and the friendship has been incredible. So I love you
- 51:40Speaker 1: to death. I want I want to now fast forward
- 51:43Speaker 1: a couple more years and tell the story about the
- 51:48Speaker 1: check the blank chain, because I was I got off
- 51:51Speaker 1: to a terrible start one year, and Bussy's being bussy
- 51:55Speaker 1: and he's doing his thing and trying to work my
- 51:58Speaker 1: psyche whatever the way he does it, and I'm like, Bussy,
- 52:01Speaker 1: I go, if I fucking drive in one hundred runs
- 52:03Speaker 1: this year, I fucking write to a ten thousand dollars
- 52:05Speaker 1: fucking check on the spot. Because I was like, I
- 52:08Speaker 1: had maybe like twelve rbs. I start going into like
- 52:12Speaker 1: the end of May. I'm like, there's no fucking way.
- 52:15Speaker 1: And I had gone off and had to really end
- 52:19Speaker 1: up having what was a good season, Like the very
- 52:21Speaker 1: last like two games of the year, I drove in
- 52:22Speaker 1: one hundredth run, and sure enough I wrote in that
- 52:25Speaker 1: fucking check, Tim Tim Boss, I don't date it, I
- 52:32Speaker 1: sign it, and I put the subject one hundred RBIs
- 52:36Speaker 1: until this day.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Where's that check? Right here? In my phone? Doug? He
- 52:41Speaker 2: kept he.
- 52:42Speaker 1: Hasn't cashed the check because he's always says if he's
- 52:44Speaker 1: going to pinch this is this is. We're going on
- 52:46Speaker 1: almost eight nine years of you having this check.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Yeah really still Crisp, Phil Crisp. Yeah, I haven't. It's
- 52:56Speaker 2: just sat here in my phone.
- 52:58Speaker 3: Hill, the camera were right there.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Hold that thing up, Tim hundred RB eyes.
- 53:05Speaker 3: Yeah, let me see this.
- 53:09Speaker 4: That's that's the freshest ten year old check you'll ever.
- 53:15Speaker 3: That's amazing.
- 53:17Speaker 1: That's what you meant to me, honestly, both of you guys,
- 53:21Speaker 1: and doing this, doing this podcast, doing this union has
- 53:24Speaker 1: been so great to get to reconnect with teammates. But
- 53:28Speaker 1: you guys are more than your friends, and I love
- 53:31Speaker 1: you the most. You're a close second.
- 53:34Speaker 3: You got We're all family and we couldn't have done
- 53:37Speaker 3: it without each other. And we've all impacted each other
- 53:39Speaker 3: so much. And it's like, oh, you're grinding every day
- 53:42Speaker 3: you're playing. You actually had to perform. I got to.
- 53:44Speaker 3: I was a good cheerleader and we had our own
- 53:46Speaker 3: little cheers in the dugout. We had the whole We
- 53:48Speaker 3: had such a great staff. But we're I miss you.
- 53:52Speaker 3: I know that I missed Tina dugout with you, that's
- 53:55Speaker 3: for sure, both of you.
- 53:56Speaker 1: We have we gotta end this. But we were in
- 54:00Speaker 1: Saint Louis. I got to tell these stories and it
- 54:01Speaker 1: was just at some point we're we're in Saint Louis
- 54:06Speaker 1: and we Bussy and I stayed real late after the
- 54:10Speaker 1: game because Zebras took forever sometimes after games.
- 54:14Speaker 3: So that's the worst. I was the last when shower
- 54:17Speaker 3: like ever't like.
- 54:20Speaker 1: So we were like I was hanging with Bussy and
- 54:23Speaker 1: Zoe and we were like, the bus can go. The
- 54:25Speaker 1: second bus leaves, so we we walk out of Bush Stadium,
- 54:30Speaker 1: right Bush, Yeah, and there's a little love carriage right.
- 54:35Speaker 2: It was a was a horse carriage.
- 54:36Speaker 4: It was a fust carriage and the thing was in
- 54:40Speaker 4: a frame of.
- 54:41Speaker 1: All hearts and it was all this romantic thing. And
- 54:43Speaker 1: I go, hey, boys, you want to jump on. And
- 54:45Speaker 1: we're staying at the Four Seasons there in Saint Louis,
- 54:47Speaker 1: so it's a it's a nice little fifteen minute ride
- 54:51Speaker 1: and it was like just so calm and we're just
- 54:53Speaker 1: in this horse carriage. It's all romantic. The lights and
- 54:56Speaker 1: where we have a video of us just like talking
- 54:59Speaker 1: here here we are me Ben Zobris Bussy. The memories
- 55:03Speaker 1: from Saint Louis. There's one more. We stunk so bad
- 55:08Speaker 1: in Saint Louis and it was a day game and
- 55:11Speaker 1: it had to be August. And I don't know what
- 55:16Speaker 1: you did the night before, but I could tell you were.
- 55:18Speaker 4: A little uh short normal, you were very short short.
- 55:24Speaker 1: So we end up losing, and Yachti Molina, who I
- 55:27Speaker 1: have a ton of respect for, did something in the game.
- 55:31Speaker 1: He was like chirping at us, and we ended up
- 55:34Speaker 1: getting swept. Yeah, and all of a sudden, we're like in.
- 55:37Speaker 1: They were all down, and we used to lose and
- 55:40Speaker 1: so it wasn't like that down all of a sudden.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Use here boom, all right, seven eight seconds later, boom
- 55:52Speaker 1: three more times. I walk in, I go, Bussy, what
- 55:55Speaker 1: the fuck are you doing? Because our fucking second loser,
- 55:58Speaker 1: and he's fucking he's taking like a way to ball
- 56:00Speaker 1: and just throwing it as hard as you could at
- 56:02Speaker 1: the left. He's these motherfuckers. Yeah, And because that's how
- 56:06Speaker 1: much he cared.
- 56:07Speaker 3: But that's how about saying, no, you had you, but
- 56:09Speaker 3: you had the competitiveness in you that was like you
- 56:12Speaker 3: were you couldn't impact the game. Physically, but you were
- 56:17Speaker 3: all about the boys and you were a competitor, and
- 56:19Speaker 3: I think that's why it was so relatable, how you
- 56:21Speaker 3: have such good feel yeah, because like, yeah, it doesn't matter.
- 56:25Speaker 3: I love my job, but I want to win.
- 56:27Speaker 4: Right yeah, yeah, without being disrespectful, because you guys.
- 56:30Speaker 2: Are out there with your ball, so they're trying. Yeah,
- 56:32Speaker 2: it's like you can't.
- 56:34Speaker 4: You know, no strength coach should snap, you know what
- 56:38Speaker 4: I mean at the end of the day because of
- 56:40Speaker 4: a winner or loss. Really, that's what I would preach,
- 56:43Speaker 4: because you guys are trying your asses off unless you've
- 56:46Speaker 4: got nine dudes that don't give a fuck, which doesn't
- 56:48Speaker 4: happen and didn't happen. But it was like just so,
- 56:52Speaker 4: and we were horseship. It's not like that was sixteen.
- 56:56Speaker 4: That was like, yeah, two thousands.
- 56:58Speaker 3: But there's something about the room that when somebody is
- 57:03Speaker 3: like that, it's still mad. That holds everybody else accountable.
- 57:05Speaker 3: It's like it's still not okay. The fact that you
- 57:08Speaker 3: snap sends a message. I remember, you know, we can
- 57:10Speaker 3: tell stories all day, in our stories, but I remember
- 57:12Speaker 3: we got our ass kicked. I was in Atlanta, was
- 57:14Speaker 3: sitting on the bench and we were we were out
- 57:16Speaker 3: of this game. We were getting beat like eight to
- 57:19Speaker 3: nothing in the third, like it's over right, and I
- 57:22Speaker 3: think the final score is like fifteen to three, and
- 57:27Speaker 3: the game ends. We start to walk back and I
- 57:29Speaker 3: happened to walk back behind Bobby Cox, one of the
- 57:32Speaker 3: greatest managers have been around, and he takes his he
- 57:36Speaker 3: takes his lineup card and he throws on the ground
- 57:38Speaker 3: walking down the steps like fuck. And I'm like, I'm like, damn,
- 57:43Speaker 3: he was still locked in. I checked out of this
- 57:45Speaker 3: game five man, you know, like Bobby RELI bro like
- 57:50Speaker 3: we'll get him tomorrow. We had a good team. But
- 57:52Speaker 3: it just shows like that level of like, wow, he
- 57:55Speaker 3: was still locked in. When you have that in the
- 57:57Speaker 3: room and you have that, it doesn't matter if it
- 57:58Speaker 3: was a coach, a player, a club guy. Danny and
- 58:01Speaker 3: those guys j they grind with I watched as a manager,
- 58:04Speaker 3: like they're depressed sometimes when you're just going through one
- 58:07Speaker 3: of those bunks. So like that competitiveness is Competitiveness is
- 58:10Speaker 3: such a strength and respectful way, you know.
- 58:12Speaker 4: Yeah, And that's you know, hiring the right people right
- 58:16Speaker 4: that those are good dudes, And that's culture and that
- 58:19Speaker 4: and that's what you preach, and that's why the culture changed.
- 58:24Speaker 4: Theo Tom Rickets brought you guys in and Joe matt
- 58:29Speaker 4: Leicster Lackey, Joe Madden. Joe was just so fucking come on,
- 58:35Speaker 4: so awesome even you know, here's the deal. You can
- 58:40Speaker 4: you can do or be whoever you want to be.
- 58:42Speaker 4: But at the end of the day, anytime that you
- 58:45Speaker 4: spend more than a couple of minutes with Joe Madden,
- 58:47Speaker 4: you feel better about life, no doubt.
- 58:51Speaker 3: And I'll say the same thing about you.
- 58:52Speaker 2: Well, I appreciate that. I'll say the same I would,
- 58:56Speaker 2: I would I. I've got to say a couple of
- 58:59Speaker 2: stories before we finish.
- 59:00Speaker 3: I'm probably a little drunkard with you there with Joe Madden.
- 59:05Speaker 4: But the one thing I love about Rossi and it
- 59:07Speaker 4: was even going back to two thousand saying Bernardino's stampede down,
- 59:12Speaker 4: you know.
- 59:12Speaker 2: Three games to one and everything.
- 59:13Speaker 4: We came back and beat Lane Case Lancaster Jadhawks. But
- 59:18Speaker 4: you would always be like, if the guy got a
- 59:21Speaker 4: butt down or got to base it, if he was
- 59:23Speaker 4: catching and in the game and he comes sit next
- 59:25Speaker 4: to you and he'd slap my lego.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Great job, you go, don't fucking touch me. Bro. I
- 59:31Speaker 2: was the same way.
- 59:32Speaker 1: Yeah, bro, because bro, if you fucking did something. If
- 59:36Speaker 1: I heard David ortusday one year, the difference between my
- 59:40Speaker 1: good years and bad years is whether the guy's catch
- 59:42Speaker 1: the ball or not. Because I'm gonna hit the ball
- 59:45Speaker 1: hard the same amount every year. It's my good years
- 59:48Speaker 1: or if they catch it or not. So when I
- 59:50Speaker 1: would line out and hit a missile and it's an
- 59:52Speaker 1: out and everyone's in there saying, oh, good swing, I'm like,
- 59:56Speaker 1: don't fucking dap me up like I just got out.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: I'd rather have blown up my back and hit than
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: waist a bullet, I'm sure. And I was just as
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: I got older, it was like even guys still knew.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: But you know, when you're really grinding and you do
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: that and they give it to you can't get like that.
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: But you need a little red ass in the in
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: the in the in our game, and.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: You were you know, I had a lackey. I think
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: that teams need that nowadays. It's like, you know, people
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: kick rocks like oh he yelled at me, and it's like,
- 1:00:29Speaker 4: you know, like uh, Darnelle McDonald going d mac going
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: around like trying to spray everyone with lavender.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: And ship and Lackey's like, get that fucking ship right
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: at it was like so good.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: But I do remember, you know, Riz with the I
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: remember the the time that you were bitching about I
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: stink a fucking stink, and I'm not going to get back,
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: and like, come on the baseball card, it's always gonna
- 1:01:02Speaker 4: be seen. You have one hundred RBS five, one hundred RBIs.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: He tells me.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: I'm gonna give you. I'm gonna give you ten thousand dollars. Hey,
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: you guys heard it. You heard it right, And so
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: so we get close to the he's like like ninety
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: nine RBIs with like two games to go, and so he's, uh,
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: nine second he's up and you know, takes an ass
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: out like fuck doubled down line and starts clapping the
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: second base and everyone's like, you know. And so then
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: he comes in after the game, slaps a check down
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: on my desk and goes, there's ten thousand dollars and
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: I go, that's awesome.
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: You know, uh, no big deal.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: At the time, I thought it was kind of a joke,
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: but whatever, it's like it's.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: Yeah, So then yes, I kind of got into a
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: little bit of a grind.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: Just recently.
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: He called me.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Two months ago he called me, I know, but not
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: this grind, that grind.
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: And so he luckily I went to his bachelor party
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: and I'm like, photo left cash his check. And I
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: didn't say to anyone, but I was like, my god,
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: check at some point. And so he stands up and
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: tells all his buddies and he goes, the only thing
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: I have to say about this guy is and he
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: told his whole story about the RBI thing. He goes
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: and I got one hundred RBIs and I gave him
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: ten thousand dollars check. And this dude such a good dude.
- 1:02:44Speaker 4: He's never cashed the check. And I went, fuck.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Reverse reverse psychology.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: So well, look, this is where we're family for life,
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: and we couldn't we can't thank you enough just for
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: being who you are and how you've impacted our careers,
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: this team, this special reunion that we're able to do
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: now and tell all these stories. And I'm just so
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: thankful for you.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: So thank you, yeah, thank you. I appreciate everything.
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: And you invited me to sea World and ship that
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: was and we got flat for like peta was like Jesus,
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: I was trying to go to SeaWorld with my streak
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: on off there in San Diego break.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: I wouldn't go use a smart one.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and so we're.
- 1:03:35Speaker 4: Saying like, don't fucking move, don't fucking move. The dolphins
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: are coming by. Don't fucking That was like, oh my god, really.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: And like these bustloads of fish come.
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: Yeah, remember that they took it back from Peter. Peter
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: was blow me on my social media, so I'm like, yeah,
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: it was really, you know, I swear to you.
- 1:03:53Speaker 4: I was with David Ross and like, no, you weren't
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: like I swear, I swear.
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: I know David.
- 1:04:00Speaker 3: That's a good memory.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: I forgot about that. But no, thank you guys. You're welcome.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: I mean, this is I mean, this is bullshit. This
- 1:04:07Speaker 2: is like pinch me stuff. Yeah it is.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: Well you deserve. You have grinded a long way to
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: be where you're at, a Hall of fame resume.
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: So I thank you, I love you.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: I love you ladies and gentlemen, tim Bucks, Timothy, thank you,
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Buss Buss. That's a fucking wrap things.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: Thank you boys. Give me a hug.
