- 0:53Speaker 3: Coley and Judy Simmons. Good to see you, ladies.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Aye, good to see you.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Hello, Awesome, awesome, super excited about what God's doing in
- 1:04Speaker 3: your lives and how you've been answering a call to
- 1:08Speaker 3: help others in various forms of counseling and ministry opportunities.
- 1:12Speaker 3: We decided to go with a title Taking Thoughts Captive.
- 1:17Speaker 3: So Doctor two, do you want to just open that
- 1:21Speaker 3: up a little bit and Shelby you can add to it?
- 1:23Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you know. I think.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Joyce Myers wrote an amazing book called The Battlefield of
- 1:30Speaker 5: the Mind and if you haven't read it.
- 1:32Speaker 4: Those listening, I would encourage you to read it. But
- 1:35Speaker 4: it just the battle is in the mind.
- 1:37Speaker 5: If the enemy can get us in the mind when
- 1:39Speaker 5: we first wake up, then he's got us through the
- 1:42Speaker 5: rest of the day.
- 1:42Speaker 4: But if we can learn to take our thoughts captive
- 1:45Speaker 4: to the.
- 1:45Speaker 5: Obedience of Christ, like Scripture says, I tell my clients
- 1:48Speaker 5: to they need to catch the thought, they need to
- 1:50Speaker 5: challenge the thought, and then if it doesn't line up
- 1:52Speaker 5: with the word of God, they.
- 1:53Speaker 4: Need to change the thought.
- 1:54Speaker 5: Because we become what we think, and our life becomes
- 1:58Speaker 5: what we think.
- 1:59Speaker 4: And so our mind is so powerful.
- 2:01Speaker 5: And I think Joyce Myers got it right when she
- 2:03Speaker 5: said the mind is a battlefield.
- 2:06Speaker 6: Yeah, that's definitely so true. And we get stuck in
- 2:11Speaker 6: our thinking, right, so one thought leads to another, that
- 2:16Speaker 6: leads to another.
- 2:16Speaker 7: And I think sometimes of I do some E. M. D.
- 2:21Speaker 6: R Work, which is some really brain therapy to a degree,
- 2:27Speaker 6: and we think about the ruts that get created in
- 2:31Speaker 6: our brains and how easy it is to fall back
- 2:33Speaker 6: into those. And so you're totally right about when we
- 2:36Speaker 6: our thoughts become, we become our thought life. And so
- 2:41Speaker 6: I talk to clients a lot about you know, hey,
- 2:44Speaker 6: we've been walking this one road for a really long time,
- 2:47Speaker 6: and it's easy when we try to get out of
- 2:49Speaker 6: it to fall back in. So that's definitely true. There
- 2:52Speaker 6: there are patterns that take us down a road that
- 2:57Speaker 6: we don't often sometimes we were ready to get off
- 2:59Speaker 6: that road. And that's a lot can be a lot
- 3:01Speaker 6: of work.
- 3:03Speaker 3: And I would add too, as a guy, the guy
- 3:06Speaker 3: perspective here the pink I'm out numbered. But just even
- 3:12Speaker 3: sexual thoughts, I mean, I don't know, there's been all
- 3:14Speaker 3: kinds of statistics like boys will have a sexual thought
- 3:16Speaker 3: like every eighteen seconds or something like that. Fact tech
- 3:18Speaker 3: me later. But I know is that, you know, women
- 3:22Speaker 3: are attractive or even if it's same sex attraction and
- 3:25Speaker 3: you're struggling with that. Whatever. What we look at generates
- 3:29Speaker 3: thoughts and emotions, images, you know all that. And even
- 3:34Speaker 3: God is being in ministry celebrating twenty five years you know,
- 3:38Speaker 3: free alcohol, free cigarette, free man our thought life, even
- 3:42Speaker 3: fantasy or stuff like that. I mean, that's you know,
- 3:45Speaker 3: I always say I dread the day where technology comes
- 3:49Speaker 3: where they can you know, put a probe or some
- 3:53Speaker 3: patches and all of a sudden I got a little
- 3:54Speaker 3: plasma screen on my forehead and everybody can see what
- 3:57Speaker 3: I'm thinking, you know, So I don't know if they've
- 4:01Speaker 3: come up with that technology, like, no, we're not, we're
- 4:03Speaker 3: not letting out nobody.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Run from it when they come up with it, run
- 4:08Speaker 4: from it.
- 4:09Speaker 3: But yeah, but yeah, I mean, it's not it's a
- 4:12Speaker 3: it's a spark that can start a fire your thought life.
- 4:15Speaker 3: So that's I'm glad we're talking about this today.
- 4:19Speaker 6: Definitely. I think that in terms of so there's so
- 4:24Speaker 6: many different directions that our thoughts can go. There's lots
- 4:27Speaker 6: of different categories.
- 4:28Speaker 7: That we could place them in.
- 4:30Speaker 6: I think with the sexual thought life, that's been something
- 4:34Speaker 6: that's really been on my mind a lot lately, just
- 4:39Speaker 6: seeing couple do mostly couple's work and so seeing them
- 4:45Speaker 6: couples come in and they're struggling with a spouse who's
- 4:49Speaker 6: has a has a really hard time with pornography or
- 4:52Speaker 6: you know, other issues that that are sexual creating issues
- 4:57Speaker 6: in the marriage. And so we we recently did start
- 5:02Speaker 6: a group on restoration of those issues, and so we
- 5:08Speaker 6: just we started that recently that's on Thursday nights, and
- 5:12Speaker 6: it isn't and I think with any thought that we're
- 5:15Speaker 6: trying to take captive. A big thing is being accountable
- 5:18Speaker 6: for those thoughts and saying, you know, sometimes we'll see
- 5:23Speaker 6: people say like, well everyone feels this way, or this
- 5:27Speaker 6: isn't as bad as you know it could be, and
- 5:30Speaker 6: things like that, and I think taking the thoughts that
- 5:32Speaker 6: we have, whether it be it could even be like
- 5:36Speaker 6: thoughts about other people. It doesn't even have to be
- 5:39Speaker 6: aside from only the sexual thoughts. Like let's say it's
- 5:42Speaker 6: thoughts on really not liking someone or wishing something bad
- 5:45Speaker 6: would happen to them, or jealousy or whatever. It's like, well,
- 5:48Speaker 6: it's not that big of a deal. Everyone gets jealous
- 5:50Speaker 6: sometimes or whatever that is. And that's not really taking
- 5:54Speaker 6: them active, right, that's kind of allowing them to exist
- 5:57Speaker 6: and not realizing the danger and the poison that they
- 6:01Speaker 6: can kind of cause in our lives. It's important to
- 6:05Speaker 6: take the thoughts and to not be like, oh, well
- 6:08Speaker 6: everyone ruggles with this. It's not about everyone, right, It's
- 6:10Speaker 6: about this is how it's affecting me, and it's not
- 6:14Speaker 6: healthy and good for me. I need to do some
- 6:18Speaker 6: work to change it, and ultimately I'm the one that
- 6:21Speaker 6: is responsible for doing that.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Yeah, here's the verse and intrudy. You can start that
- 6:27Speaker 3: second Corinthians ten to five. It just picks up casting
- 6:30Speaker 3: down arguments, and that never happens in couples therapy, right,
- 6:35Speaker 3: casking down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself
- 6:40Speaker 3: against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity
- 6:46Speaker 3: to the obedience of Christ. So that's kind of where
- 6:48Speaker 3: we even get that word, right, taking thoughts captive, right.
- 6:52Speaker 5: I mean, not every thought deserves space our rent in
- 6:55Speaker 5: our brain, and we need to be able to learn
- 6:58Speaker 5: to decipher which ones are our thoughts, which ones are
- 7:02Speaker 5: God's thoughts, or even which ones are the enemy's thoughts
- 7:05Speaker 5: that have been placed in us through you know, Chuck
- 7:08Speaker 5: Patrick Tchuck you mentioned you know, our eyes, and so
- 7:10Speaker 5: we do have to be careful what we what we
- 7:13Speaker 5: look at. We need to be careful what we listen to,
- 7:17Speaker 5: because all that will create thoughts in our head.
- 7:20Speaker 4: And not every thought really truly is our own thought,
- 7:23Speaker 4: you know.
- 7:23Speaker 5: It's you catch a thought from somewhere else and it
- 7:26Speaker 5: starts to become your reality.
- 7:28Speaker 4: And that's when you.
- 7:29Speaker 5: Know you've got to challenge that thought, and that's where
- 7:31Speaker 5: you take it captive, you know, and lining up to
- 7:34Speaker 5: God's word.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I was seeing someone the other day and.
- 7:36Speaker 5: She just started saying all these things that she was thinking,
- 7:40Speaker 5: and I opened up the Word and I'm like, where
- 7:43Speaker 5: does it say that in the Bible about you? So
- 7:46Speaker 5: if that, if it doesn't say that in the Bible
- 7:48Speaker 5: about you, then those thoughts are lies and they need
- 7:51Speaker 5: to be cast down.
- 7:52Speaker 4: But so often we've said those thoughts.
- 7:55Speaker 5: Rehearse those lines in our head that it seems like
- 7:57Speaker 5: it's become a reality. And like I said, it become
- 8:01Speaker 5: what we think on so much does become a reality,
- 8:04Speaker 5: and we say, well, that's just the way it is.
- 8:06Speaker 5: But if it's not, if we're not thinking the way
- 8:11Speaker 5: God has intended us to think, think on these things,
- 8:14Speaker 5: the things that are pure, are the things that are lovely,
- 8:17Speaker 5: things like that, then we're not really truly thinking God's thoughts.
- 8:20Speaker 4: So we do need to be mindful.
- 8:22Speaker 5: And y'all, it's hard, especially if we've been thinking the
- 8:25Speaker 5: same thought for so long and having the same challenges.
- 8:29Speaker 5: You're like, it just must be the way it is,
- 8:31Speaker 5: But if it's not God honoring and edifying, then we
- 8:35Speaker 5: really need to rethink what we're thinking.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Yeah, that's good.
- 8:39Speaker 6: As you say that, I really love the you know
- 8:43Speaker 6: how you mentioned in scripture that God says, like, think
- 8:46Speaker 6: on these things that are lovely and pure, and you
- 8:49Speaker 6: can really see how much God, God's God tells us
- 8:53Speaker 6: to do things out of love and protection. And he
- 8:57Speaker 6: tells us, you know, or commands us to do anything,
- 9:00Speaker 6: but especially in this thinking about our our thought life,
- 9:05Speaker 6: there's good purpose and there's good reason that he says
- 9:07Speaker 6: that because if when we when we don't, we see
- 9:12Speaker 6: bad fruit and pain and different things that come from it.
- 9:15Speaker 6: And He really does tell us to do things out
- 9:17Speaker 6: of protection for us, like hey son, hey daughter, like,
- 9:20Speaker 6: meditate on these good things, even even when it's hard,
- 9:24Speaker 6: even when you know you notice a bad thought, meditate
- 9:28Speaker 6: on something else and it's for our good. And then
- 9:33Speaker 6: I think that's a good I think that's like when
- 9:36Speaker 6: you said that.
- 9:36Speaker 7: That kind of triggered that for me.
- 9:38Speaker 6: And God is so kind and protective and when he
- 9:42Speaker 6: tells us these things, he he does, of course know best.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Yeah, my past used to say, you can't stop a
- 9:50Speaker 3: bird from landing on your head, but you can definitely
- 9:53Speaker 3: stop him from building a nest there. And so the
- 9:57Speaker 3: thoughts could be like a bird just land on your
- 10:00Speaker 3: head because he wanted to. And what are you gonna do.
- 10:02Speaker 3: You're gonna like let him just walk. You're not gonna
- 10:04Speaker 3: walk around with a bird on your head all day.
- 10:06Speaker 3: You're gonna like shrew him on, right, or he's gonna
- 10:09Speaker 3: build a nest. So that would be the difference of
- 10:11Speaker 3: having a thought. And the word meditation and what you
- 10:15Speaker 3: guys are talking about is found in Philippians four and
- 10:18Speaker 3: it starts in verse eight and again this is near
- 10:22Speaker 3: the end of the letter. Finally, brethren, whatever things are
- 10:26Speaker 3: true and whatever things are noble, And if you have
- 10:29Speaker 3: a Bible, it's so good just to circle these words true, noble,
- 10:34Speaker 3: whatever things are just. And then here's whatever things are pure.
- 10:39Speaker 3: And every guy in the world struggles right there because
- 10:42Speaker 3: we know I thought life can be. And this is
- 10:44Speaker 3: the challenge. This is how God raises the bar. He understands.
- 10:48Speaker 3: But you know pure that that alleviates a lot of
- 10:51Speaker 3: bad thoughts. Right there is this pure right, whatever things
- 10:54Speaker 3: are lovely, whatever things are good, report virtue and praiseworthy.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Uh so, stop watching the news because it's all bad sizzle,
- 11:05Speaker 3: you know, shock and awe. Can you believe they said this?
- 11:08Speaker 3: And you know, there's no you know, we don't want
- 11:10Speaker 3: to keep our head to sand, and we need to
- 11:11Speaker 3: know what's going on. But some of those things can
- 11:14Speaker 3: really fire you up, and you can get all angry
- 11:16Speaker 3: about it because now you're meant, you're not really meditating
- 11:18Speaker 3: on praiseworthy just good stuff. So you know, if there's balance,
- 11:23Speaker 3: I guess we're going to talk about that too, Sure
- 11:25Speaker 3: your turn.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I think I think there is balance.
- 11:28Speaker 7: And you know, we do.
- 11:29Speaker 5: We're supposed to what scriptures say, to be wise as
- 11:32Speaker 5: a serpent and gentle as a dove, and so we
- 11:34Speaker 5: do need to know what's going on around us, but
- 11:36Speaker 5: we also need to be mindful of what's going on
- 11:39Speaker 5: within us. And so I think just you know, even
- 11:41Speaker 5: taking you know, so you talked about accountability a few
- 11:44Speaker 5: minutes ago. It is great to have accountability partners, Prayer Partners,
- 11:49Speaker 5: iron Shopmriend's Iron.
- 11:50Speaker 4: So if you're having.
- 11:51Speaker 5: Stinking thinking, you can have someone say, hey, wait a minute,
- 11:55Speaker 5: you need to go check what the word says, or
- 11:58Speaker 5: you need to go check what you were last week
- 11:59Speaker 5: in your journal, because that's not what God says about you,
- 12:03Speaker 5: and that's not what God says about your situation because
- 12:06Speaker 5: I think, as I said earlier, our thoughts can become
- 12:09Speaker 5: so the negative thoughts and the positive thoughts can become
- 12:13Speaker 5: so normal for us that we just think it's our reality.
- 12:17Speaker 5: I mean, the little person I was talking about yesterday, rejection,
- 12:21Speaker 5: you know, has become her reality. So she bills, thinks,
- 12:25Speaker 5: believes that she is just going to be rejected the
- 12:28Speaker 5: rest of her life because that's become her go to
- 12:32Speaker 5: thought life, which we know is a lie because God
- 12:35Speaker 5: does not reject her, but that's how she's living her
- 12:39Speaker 5: life right now. So we have to be very mindful
- 12:42Speaker 5: and have those people in our life that will speak
- 12:44Speaker 5: truth to us in love.
- 12:48Speaker 4: And hold us accountable for that.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Yeah that's good, Shelby.
- 12:52Speaker 6: Yeah, I definitely agree, because again, because sometimes our thoughts
- 13:00Speaker 6: will become are so normal to us that we don't
- 13:03Speaker 6: really always hear them. They're just influencing the things that
- 13:08Speaker 6: we do, how we speak, how we feel, but we
- 13:10Speaker 6: don't really always hear our thoughts. And so having someone
- 13:14Speaker 6: to help us be accountable, hold us accountable is good
- 13:18Speaker 6: because they can hear and see us and they can
- 13:21Speaker 6: start to question, like, hey, what's kind of the thought
- 13:23Speaker 6: behind that? And I think that's really a good place
- 13:26Speaker 6: to be. And when we have someone like that, you know,
- 13:28Speaker 6: a friend is to be is a gift.
- 13:29Speaker 7: It's to be treasured. Someone who's really.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Doing that out of like love for us is good.
- 13:35Speaker 6: And I think part of that being accountable would be
- 13:37Speaker 6: to say, huh, I didn't notice that.
- 13:41Speaker 7: Why do you think that? Right?
- 13:42Speaker 6: Because a lot of times we want to get defensive
- 13:44Speaker 6: because we're good people, good meaning things, and we don't
- 13:48Speaker 6: want to hear that like, oh you think that I
- 13:50Speaker 6: have a negative thought process on this. And so it's
- 13:53Speaker 6: to trust that gift right to you know something I
- 13:56Speaker 6: love to tell my husband, which is, you know, kind
- 13:58Speaker 6: of funny, but I'm like, hey, God gave me to
- 14:01Speaker 6: you as a gift.
- 14:02Speaker 7: I think I might know a thing or two.
- 14:04Speaker 6: Maybe you should listen to me, you know, kind of
- 14:06Speaker 6: in a loving way.
- 14:08Speaker 3: But it's not something with.
- 14:09Speaker 7: A good friend or good healthy counsel.
- 14:12Speaker 6: Like God has put that in our lives to help
- 14:14Speaker 6: us to be accountable and to give us, you know.
- 14:17Speaker 7: Some checks and balances.
- 14:19Speaker 6: And so you know, if someone's saying, hey, I think
- 14:21Speaker 6: I I think you need to rethink that or is
- 14:24Speaker 6: that really true? It's really what a benefit it is
- 14:28Speaker 6: to us to be able to take that and to
- 14:29Speaker 6: reflect on it and to see if we can apply that.
- 14:33Speaker 6: I think is really beneficial when we think about having
- 14:36Speaker 6: someone help us be accountable, is how willing we take that?
- 14:41Speaker 3: In fact? And again the thought life too even led
- 14:44Speaker 3: us to this topic was how we think about ourselves?
- 14:47Speaker 3: That is super important. We touched on it on our
- 14:49Speaker 3: last episode identity. How do I think about me? And
- 14:52Speaker 3: how does God think about me? And just to kind
- 14:56Speaker 3: of unpack a little bit that take what we thought captive.
- 14:59Speaker 3: I just did it context which starts in four and
- 15:02Speaker 3: it talks about for the weapons of our warfare are
- 15:06Speaker 3: not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.
- 15:11Speaker 3: And we started with casting down arguments and everything. So
- 15:15Speaker 3: this is spiritual warfare. I think it starts in the mind.
- 15:19Speaker 3: The enemy has the way of whispering. I don't think
- 15:21Speaker 3: the enemy is in us like possession. People think that
- 15:24Speaker 3: we're possessed, right. I don't think the even Satan has
- 15:27Speaker 3: the ability to know what I'm thinking. I think if
- 15:31Speaker 3: we put words in the air, he can hear. He's
- 15:32Speaker 3: an angel, He's a created being like a bird in
- 15:35Speaker 3: a tree can only be in one place at one time.
- 15:37Speaker 3: We have lots of demons, so and be careful when
- 15:40Speaker 3: I start opening up the warfare thing. But anyway, it's
- 15:43Speaker 3: starting with prayer, right, We pray our thought life. And
- 15:46Speaker 3: I just wanted to piggyback to one more verse. We'll
- 15:48Speaker 3: get there a Psalms one thirty nine where he says
- 15:50Speaker 3: he knows my lying down, he knows my rising up,
- 15:53Speaker 3: he knows my thoughts afar off, he knows the words
- 15:57Speaker 3: I'm going to speak. But yet God still says, talk
- 15:59Speaker 3: to me about it. So even people pray silently, they're
- 16:03Speaker 3: praying in their thought world. So just to kind of
- 16:06Speaker 3: bring all that whole spiritual realm into your thought life,
- 16:09Speaker 3: God already knows what you're thinking. Anyway, she might as
- 16:11Speaker 3: well start talking him about your thought life. That's a
- 16:13Speaker 3: good place to start, true to your turn.
- 16:15Speaker 4: And yeah, I'm smile because he does. You know, he
- 16:19Speaker 4: knows our thought life, and and you.
- 16:21Speaker 5: Know he's okay with us coming to him with our
- 16:26Speaker 5: negative you know, our negative thoughts like but he when
- 16:29Speaker 5: we bring it to him, we've got to be ready
- 16:31Speaker 5: to receive the truth about how he feels about us,
- 16:34Speaker 5: you know what I mean? It's like we go to
- 16:36Speaker 5: him and say I feel unworthy, I feel rejected, and
- 16:41Speaker 5: we've got to allow him to speak that truth back
- 16:44Speaker 5: into us as a loving father would like if my
- 16:47Speaker 5: son or daughter comes to me and saying, I'm feeling X,
- 16:51Speaker 5: Y and Z, you know, then I have the at
- 16:53Speaker 5: that point the ability to speak listen to him first
- 16:57Speaker 5: or her first, and then speak that truth into them,
- 17:00Speaker 5: you know.
- 17:00Speaker 4: And I think that's what our heavenly father wants as well.
- 17:02Speaker 5: We can bring everything to him and lay it at
- 17:05Speaker 5: his feet, but then let's just sit there and let
- 17:07Speaker 5: him speak life back into us.
- 17:10Speaker 4: And I think that's hard sometimes.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I know it's hard because when we were feeling unloved
- 17:16Speaker 5: or rejected.
- 17:16Speaker 4: It's hard to receive that.
- 17:17Speaker 5: But if we sit in his presence for a little
- 17:21Speaker 5: bit of time, he will start to lavish and you know,
- 17:24Speaker 5: overcome us with his love. And so we've got to
- 17:27Speaker 5: be able to It's kind of like a give and
- 17:29Speaker 5: take with a with our relationship.
- 17:31Speaker 3: With the Lord.
- 17:31Speaker 7: Yea, yeah, I love that.
- 17:34Speaker 6: We had a little had a you know, practice wide
- 17:39Speaker 6: intercession time yesterday morning, and we talked about sitting in
- 17:44Speaker 6: God's presence and dwelling in his presence and getting you know,
- 17:47Speaker 6: whatever it is that stops us from doing that, trying
- 17:50Speaker 6: to surrender that so that we can be, like you said,
- 17:52Speaker 6: ready to sit with him and to accept what he
- 17:56Speaker 6: says about us, and to accept the good things and
- 17:58Speaker 6: to let his love like sit on us. One thing
- 18:03Speaker 6: that going back to the verse that you just shared
- 18:05Speaker 6: about you know, these things are not carnal. And also
- 18:09Speaker 6: earlier in our conversation, one or both of you may
- 18:12Speaker 6: have touched on kind of with the bird building a
- 18:15Speaker 6: nest and something else that Truthy had said about sometimes
- 18:21Speaker 6: we get a thought that may it's not that that
- 18:25Speaker 6: is the bad thing, right. We can't always control a
- 18:28Speaker 6: thought that we get, and maybe it is of a
- 18:31Speaker 6: dark you know, that is sent from from not just us,
- 18:34Speaker 6: but some spiritual warfare.
- 18:36Speaker 7: And there I don't know if you've noticed this truty.
- 18:40Speaker 6: With some of my clients, I'll see them getting almost
- 18:43Speaker 6: like very paranoid about their thought life and a lot
- 18:47Speaker 6: of shame about thoughts that come into their head, trying
- 18:51Speaker 6: to remove like, hey, that's not the sin, right, And
- 18:55Speaker 6: then there's just consumed with all of this guilt and
- 18:58Speaker 6: shame about their thought life. And that's sometimes hard to
- 19:02Speaker 6: help a client walk through an undo, and that can
- 19:05Speaker 6: be tormenting.
- 19:07Speaker 7: Right, And so to say like, oh, I let that.
- 19:09Speaker 6: Go, I release that and I'm not going to hold
- 19:11Speaker 6: on to like the shame and stuff for that. Is
- 19:14Speaker 6: that something you've ever experienced with any clients.
- 19:18Speaker 5: That they keep coming back to the.
- 19:21Speaker 7: The guilt that they let's say they have a thought.
- 19:24Speaker 6: Let's say it's an impure thought, a lustful thought, and
- 19:27Speaker 6: then it's focus on like I can't believe I had
- 19:31Speaker 6: that thought. I'm a horrible person, Like I need to
- 19:33Speaker 6: tell my husband, I need to tell you know, my pastor.
- 19:35Speaker 6: And have you ever seen anyone maybe get obsessive over
- 19:39Speaker 6: having thoughts that are bad?
- 19:41Speaker 7: And you know, maybe they're not.
- 19:45Speaker 6: It's not the same as you know, they're not necessarily
- 19:49Speaker 6: festering and you know, letting this thought play out and
- 19:53Speaker 6: having a bad thought life. But they're just really focused
- 19:56Speaker 6: on one lustful thought and condemning themselves, right right right?
- 20:03Speaker 4: I mean yes?
- 20:03Speaker 5: And to that, we normally what we do is okay,
- 20:08Speaker 5: because then they feel bad.
- 20:09Speaker 4: They feel bad because that goes.
- 20:11Speaker 5: Back into shame, which we talked about before, and so
- 20:14Speaker 5: we walk through, Okay, you are not bad because you have.
- 20:17Speaker 5: That thought does not make you bad. That thought is
- 20:21Speaker 5: an honoring God. So let's figure out how.
- 20:24Speaker 4: To get rid of that thought.
- 20:25Speaker 5: And if it's one day at a time, one moment
- 20:27Speaker 5: at a time, you know, forgive yourself, release yourself. You know,
- 20:32Speaker 5: when that thought comes back up, then I normally tell
- 20:35Speaker 5: them again, catch the thought. Okay, I'm thinking it, So
- 20:37Speaker 5: what am I going to do with it now? Sometimes
- 20:39Speaker 5: they have success with challenging it and changing it. The
- 20:42Speaker 5: next week they'll come in and they may not have
- 20:44Speaker 5: had that success, but eventually, by continuing to do that,
- 20:49Speaker 5: they start walking more in success.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Now they may come back six.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Months later and say, you know, I'm messed up again,
- 20:55Speaker 5: But then we go through the process again. But I
- 20:58Speaker 5: think the more you teach someone how to walk in
- 21:01Speaker 5: freedom and deliverance and healing, the more they're going to
- 21:05Speaker 5: experience that. But the enemy wants to come in and say,
- 21:07Speaker 5: see you messed up again. God's going to come in
- 21:10Speaker 5: and say, see I've forgiven you. I've already forgiven you.
- 21:13Speaker 5: Forgive yourself, release yourself. Let's walk in freedom together.
- 21:16Speaker 4: And so you know, the enemy loves shame, condemnation, and guilt.
- 21:21Speaker 4: But God is Goodness wants us to be free. And yeah,
- 21:25Speaker 4: just renewing that. I think those thoughts in your head.
- 21:28Speaker 3: So here's a deep dive on the theological side of thoughts,
- 21:32Speaker 3: being sinful or not. And I'll just give it away.
- 21:36Speaker 3: You don't have to confess ask for forgiveness of thoughts
- 21:40Speaker 3: or being tempted, because being tempted is not a sin.
- 21:44Speaker 3: It's giving into the temptation. And I'll tell you why.
- 21:47Speaker 3: I believe that, because Jesus was tempted Hebrews Hebrews chapter
- 21:51Speaker 3: two eighteen. For in that he himself has suffered being tempted,
- 21:57Speaker 3: he's able to aid those who are tempted. Right, And
- 22:01Speaker 3: then he was four fifteen. For we do not have
- 22:04Speaker 3: a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weakness. But
- 22:07Speaker 3: was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
- 22:14Speaker 3: So these evil thoughts that are very tempting, Jesus was tempted,
- 22:20Speaker 3: yet without sin. So if Jesus was sinless and he
- 22:23Speaker 3: was tempted, we see it twice in scripture. There having
- 22:26Speaker 3: the temptation, do I rob the bank? I had a
- 22:28Speaker 3: thought I could do it. I can get out the
- 22:29Speaker 3: back getaway car and starting to think about it. You're
- 22:32Speaker 3: not going to jail for thinking about robbing a bank today,
- 22:35Speaker 3: and you don't you know, if you spend too much
- 22:37Speaker 3: time meditating on it, now you're wasting time because you're
- 22:40Speaker 3: not at work. And now it's a sin of omission
- 22:42Speaker 3: because you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing,
- 22:45Speaker 3: because you're spending too much time thinking about stupid stuff.
- 22:48Speaker 3: It's a different kind of sin. But having that thought,
- 22:51Speaker 3: and yeah, some of those thoughts can be dark. And
- 22:53Speaker 3: there are darts. I love how you said that, Shelby.
- 22:56Speaker 3: That's how enemy fires. Those those darts. Quench it with
- 23:00Speaker 3: the shield of faith, the faith of who I believe
- 23:03Speaker 3: I am. And no, I'm not gonna act on that
- 23:05Speaker 3: and do that. Even in like the pornography realm, there's
- 23:09Speaker 3: a thought, do I want to go to the website?
- 23:11Speaker 3: Can I get away with it? Well, we have covenantiyes
- 23:13Speaker 3: dot com overcomers TV seventeen dollars a month. That's on
- 23:18Speaker 3: all your devices, and you have some guys who will
- 23:20Speaker 3: get an email report if you look at something, and
- 23:23Speaker 3: just knowing that three of your guys are going to
- 23:25Speaker 3: get the email report, I'm not even gonna do it.
- 23:27Speaker 3: Because I can't get away with it. And now I'm
- 23:29Speaker 3: not even going to spend another three seconds thinking about
- 23:31Speaker 3: it because I don't want to have the conversation with
- 23:33Speaker 3: my accountability group tomorrow, or I don't want my wife
- 23:36Speaker 3: finding it in my history. But now with private and
- 23:38Speaker 3: all these other kind of things, that's always the temptation
- 23:41Speaker 3: and can I get away with it? And do I
- 23:43Speaker 3: do it? So? But it back up the bus that
- 23:46Speaker 3: thought leads to a temptation. And I'll end with this
- 23:49Speaker 3: because I'm on my soapbox. You can't. What makes it
- 23:53Speaker 3: a temptation is a desire to want to do it
- 23:56Speaker 3: and to know it's wrong. You need two elements even
- 24:00Speaker 3: be a temptation. Eating dog poop today is not a temptation.
- 24:04Speaker 3: There's no desire to eat dog poop. I'm not struggling
- 24:07Speaker 3: with it. I'm not do I don't. I it's a
- 24:11Speaker 3: no right. So to even be a temptation, there has
- 24:15Speaker 3: to be a desire to do it and you know
- 24:17Speaker 3: it's wrong, or it's not even a temptation. Those are
- 24:19Speaker 3: some thoughts on that. But I too, for a long
- 24:21Speaker 3: time beat myself up on my you know, tempted thought life.
- 24:26Speaker 3: But God through a few other passions showed me even
- 24:29Speaker 3: Jesus was tempted yet without sin.
- 24:32Speaker 7: Yeah, I love. I think that's that's important.
- 24:35Speaker 6: And I love how you know the thing of the
- 24:38Speaker 6: thought of forgiveness, right, God forgives, and also we need
- 24:41Speaker 6: to be forgiving ourselves. Yes, sometimes we are tempted, we
- 24:44Speaker 6: have bad thoughts that and I'm gonna forgive myself and
- 24:48Speaker 6: I'm you know, and knowing the difference between all right,
- 24:51Speaker 6: I've been playing now all kinds of scenarios in my head,
- 24:55Speaker 6: whether that be with anger or lust or all these things.
- 24:58Speaker 7: Like you know, we need to be a anable for that.
- 25:01Speaker 7: We have a thought and we let it go.
- 25:04Speaker 6: There needs to be forgiveness, right, great those things.
- 25:08Speaker 3: Yeah, we had a couple of chime ins from Madam
- 25:10Speaker 3: Love that's their name, Hi everyone, and she said forgiveness
- 25:16Speaker 3: is healing, which is awesome. So anybody does have comments,
- 25:20Speaker 3: we can put them up there, questions as we continue
- 25:24Speaker 3: to do these shows the first Thursday of every month.
- 25:27Speaker 3: We have the ladies on board, but mark your calendars.
- 25:30Speaker 3: If you want to ask some questions or even give
- 25:32Speaker 3: us some topics to cover, We're more than welcome to
- 25:34Speaker 3: do that.
- 25:34Speaker 8: As well, right, definitely, And I think it's so important,
- 25:39Speaker 8: you know, on forgiveness is I think the hardest person
- 25:43Speaker 8: to forgive a lot of times is ourself, right, And
- 25:46Speaker 8: so walking and forgiveness all day long, you know, for
- 25:50Speaker 8: yourself and.
- 25:52Speaker 5: Because that brings you walking also in love, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 5: forgiveness and love go together, and you know the enemy, you.
- 25:59Speaker 4: Know, is very very wise, you know.
- 26:03Speaker 5: And so I think those thoughts that we may be
- 26:05Speaker 5: struggling with right now, those are familiars thoughts.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Does it mean that they're true thoughts?
- 26:10Speaker 5: And so coming out of agreement, I think Shelby, we
- 26:12Speaker 5: talked about this at the beginning. You know, if someone's
- 26:15Speaker 5: struggling with the same thought, you know, it's like you're
- 26:18Speaker 5: in a forest and there's two trails to go on.
- 26:21Speaker 4: Are you going to go on the least traveled are
- 26:23Speaker 4: the most traveled? Well, the most.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Traveled is the familiar thoughts, the unhealthy thoughts. And you
- 26:28Speaker 5: have to really take a conscious effort sometime, make a
- 26:30Speaker 5: conscious effort when you're standing at that crossroad.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Okay, this is familiar, I know what this feels like.
- 26:35Speaker 5: This is going to feel more normal than taking a
- 26:38Speaker 5: different path. That's going to be healthier thoughts because you're
- 26:41Speaker 5: so used to the negative thoughts and so making that
- 26:44Speaker 5: conscious effort to just say, Okay, I'm gonna stop, I'm
- 26:47Speaker 5: gonna think about the thought, I'm going to challenge it.
- 26:49Speaker 4: And now I'm going to change it.
- 26:51Speaker 5: And the change part is the hardest part because where
- 26:54Speaker 5: creatures have had it.
- 26:55Speaker 4: And but again that goes to freedom. God is a
- 26:58Speaker 4: god of freedom and a God of hope.
- 27:00Speaker 6: Yeah, and it sets us up to be successful and
- 27:03Speaker 6: we recognize that it is work and that if we
- 27:05Speaker 6: want it to be different.
- 27:06Speaker 7: We're going to have to do some hard work. And
- 27:09Speaker 7: that I think that helps people know like it is.
- 27:13Speaker 7: It's of course easy, it's going to be natural to
- 27:15Speaker 7: go this way. It's going to take some conscious effort.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Yeah. And with all that, again, is God mad at me?
- 27:21Speaker 3: Or thinking God is mad at you is not a
- 27:23Speaker 3: good thought? Well, and with Jeremiah twenty nine to eleven, right,
- 27:27Speaker 3: this is God speaking for I know the thoughts that
- 27:30Speaker 3: I think towards you. Putting your name there, says the Lord,
- 27:34Speaker 3: thoughts of peace, not of evil, to give you a
- 27:37Speaker 3: future and a hope. So those are some of God's
- 27:40Speaker 3: thoughts about you. He's crazy about you. He loves you.
- 27:43Speaker 3: If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.
- 27:47Speaker 4: That's right.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Let's close in prayer, Shelby. You want to start us off.
- 27:52Speaker 6: Sure, Heavenly, Father God, I thank you for this opportunity
- 27:56Speaker 6: for us to get together and to.
- 27:59Speaker 7: Talk about our thought life.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Lord, and and you know, I just thank you that
- 28:03Speaker 6: for the complexity of how you've made us, and for
- 28:06Speaker 6: the depth that we have, and.
- 28:08Speaker 7: And for the free will and then that we have
- 28:10Speaker 7: and the work that we get to do. And Lord,
- 28:14Speaker 7: our life is full and deep.
- 28:18Speaker 6: And there's real work, and got to just appreciate how
- 28:21Speaker 6: you've designed all of us. And I just pray that
- 28:24Speaker 6: everyone listening here would would start to pick up the
- 28:29Speaker 6: weapons for the battlefield of the mind and just be
- 28:32Speaker 6: accountable for the fight that we do have to play.
- 28:36Speaker 6: And got to just I just pray that seeds would
- 28:39Speaker 6: be planted and people would feel understood by the things
- 28:41Speaker 6: that we've talked today, and to know that you you
- 28:45Speaker 6: do think lovingly towards us, and that you're a God
- 28:47Speaker 6: of forgiveness and and comfort, and uh, I just thank
- 28:51Speaker 6: you for that.
- 28:54Speaker 5: And Father, I just thank you Lord that you are
- 28:57Speaker 5: King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Father God, I
- 28:59Speaker 5: thank you or that you love us on our best
- 29:01Speaker 5: days and you love us on our days that we struggle,
- 29:04Speaker 5: Father God, that your.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Love never changes. Lord.
- 29:06Speaker 5: So for those who are struggling today in their thought,
- 29:08Speaker 5: like Lord, I just asked that you will give them
- 29:10Speaker 5: us just an extra special dose of your love today,
- 29:15Speaker 5: of your grace today, Lord, that they will know that
- 29:18Speaker 5: you love them, you created them in your image, and that.
- 29:21Speaker 4: They lack no good thing. Father God, let them feel
- 29:24Speaker 4: your love like never before. Father God.
- 29:26Speaker 5: And for those who don't really know you right now,
- 29:28Speaker 5: I pray that they will have a supernatural encounter with you,
- 29:31Speaker 5: Father that rocks their world and changes their life for you.
- 29:33Speaker 4: We thank you Father, that you are faithful.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Man. I thank you for time with the ladies and
- 29:40Speaker 3: again for even helping us be victorious and be called
- 29:44Speaker 3: overcomers by the blood of the Lamb, the word of
- 29:46Speaker 3: our testimony. And for anyone who has not yet made
- 29:49Speaker 3: Jesus Lord of their life and received the forgiveness that
- 29:52Speaker 3: comes through what you did on the cross, may today
- 29:54Speaker 3: be the day of salvation they dive into your word
- 29:56Speaker 3: and to your gospels and also get into a good
- 29:59Speaker 3: Christ centered by believing church and also if they need counseling,
- 30:02Speaker 3: that they would find at the strength to pick up
- 30:05Speaker 3: the phone or to reach out to a friend and
- 30:08Speaker 3: get plugged into where they can find healing, hope and
- 30:11Speaker 3: redemption in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. A closing note, Madam
- 30:16Speaker 3: Love said that's it, Hallelujah, and just chimed in with
- 30:20Speaker 3: it's my first time here. I love the things of God, Hellelijah.
