- 0:07Welcome back everybody here [music] to
- 0:08the postgame pod at Auburn Undercover.
- 0:11Nathan King joined by Patrick Bingham
- 0:13back here inside of Neville Arena where
- 0:16the Tigers will get a third [music]
- 0:18postseason game here at home sometime
- 0:20this week at at time of recording right
- 0:22now. We don't know Cal and and Oklahoma
- 0:24State are still playing in the NIT
- 0:25tonight. tonight being Sunday. Um but
- 0:27it'll be either Tuesday or Wednesday
- 0:28against Nevada as Auburn wins tonight on
- 0:31Sunday evening over Seattle 91 to 85. Um
- 0:35it maybe looked a little closer than it
- 0:38actually was. Auburn was in control of
- 0:39the game for most of the second half. Uh
- 0:42they led by as many as 16. Second half
- 0:43led by 15 in the first half. Um but as
- 0:46we've come to expect Patrick from this
- 0:48Auburn team, there were sort of the
- 0:50hiccups that Auburn fans got frustrated
- 0:51with throughout the season. It was
- 0:53almost like a reminder of like, hey,
- 0:55this is this is what got you during the
- 0:57season, but the difference is this time
- 0:59around, I think you had built enough of
- 1:00a lead because three-point defense and
- 1:02late game turnovers were a problem for
- 1:04Auburn, but uh they did enough today to
- 1:06uh to move on. And now they're trying to
- 1:08make their deepest NIT run ever because
- 1:11uh one more one more win would do that
- 1:12for them.
- 1:13>> And like we all um thought would happen,
- 1:15Auburn made a deeper March run than
- 1:17Florida this year. Um and everything's
- 1:20going as expected. But um yeah, I mean
- 1:22overall it was they had a really good
- 1:25start to the game. They're kind of able
- 1:26to let a lot of that stuff happen late.
- 1:29Um I think Sebastian Williams Adams not
- 1:31being in late definitely contributed to
- 1:33that. He got those three fouls in like
- 1:3540 seconds literally. Yeah. And I don't
- 1:37think anyone knew he fouled out in that
- 1:39moment. And then and and Stephen even
- 1:41said that in the post game. He's like,
- 1:42"We should have known to take him out
- 1:44with four fouls. That was a miss by us."
- 1:46But most people don't normally get three
- 1:48fouls that quickly. And I think that
- 1:50hurt Auburn a little bit, but ultimately
- 1:51they had both the lead, so they were
- 1:52okay.
- 1:53>> Yeah. Uh Braden Maldonado for for
- 1:56Seattle was just making everything in
- 1:57the second half. He made seven threes.
- 1:59He was seven of 13 from deep in the
- 2:00second half. Auburn as a team was seven
- 2:02of 13 from deep in the second half. So
- 2:04he matched their their three-point, you
- 2:06know, point total there all by himself.
- 2:08Seattle just kept on coming um from
- 2:10beyond the ark. No surprise to anyone
- 2:12that this is a new season high for this
- 2:14team in three-point makes. Has that
- 2:16happened before?
- 2:17>> Most teams did that against Auburn this
- 2:18year and uh they made 16 of them. Uh
- 2:21they made 12 three-pointers in the
- 2:22second half. That would have tied their
- 2:24sec their season high period in just the
- 2:28second half. It actually would have been
- 2:29the most they had made in regulation
- 2:30because their season high came against
- 2:32Gonzaga, a game that went to overtime.
- 2:33And so Steven Pearl was very blunt about
- 2:35it after the game. He said, "Look, we're
- 2:37not a good defensive team and that's got
- 2:38to it's exactly what he said.
- 2:40>> It's kind of like, you know, yeah, no,
- 2:41that's verbatim. That's not me Doug
- 2:43making it up." like, you know, it's at
- 2:44the point of the year though where it's
- 2:45like when you were in SEC play and you
- 2:48were trying to make a tournament, you
- 2:49were trying to get to the tournament,
- 2:50you kind of had to like beat around the
- 2:52bush and try to make fixes for every
- 2:53game and and you know, they want to make
- 2:55the fixes for the Nevada game, but it's
- 2:56like when you're here and you've made
- 2:58this decision to play in the NIT, it's
- 2:59kind of like
- 3:00>> look guys, like we're not good on
- 3:02defense and like we'll we'll fix it in
- 3:04the offseason like for now and you're a
- 3:06man down and you're playing guys out of
- 3:08position. And that's the next thing I
- 3:09wanted to touch on, Patrick, was um
- 3:11Auburn's front court was was pretty
- 3:14dominant in this game. Uh points in the
- 3:15paint, they were plus uh plus 15 in
- 3:18points in the paint or yeah, plus 14
- 3:20rebounding. Plus 18 rebounding. I mean,
- 3:22there was really nobody that that could
- 3:24hang with the physicality and the
- 3:26athleticism of Sebastian Williams Adams
- 3:28who had a really good game. Um but
- 3:30Philip Yovic as well is good for him to
- 3:31just kind of assert himself. Uh Will
- 3:34Hebrt is the defensive player of the
- 3:35year in the West Coast Conference. He's
- 3:36a really good shot blocker, but he's not
- 3:38big. And so Auburn just kind of got down
- 3:40there. And I thought, you mentioned how
- 3:41they started better in this game as
- 3:43compared to South Alabama. I thought it
- 3:44was very purposeful by them to just,
- 3:46hey, this is good defense. Just get to
- 3:48the foul line and and settle in from
- 3:50there.
- 3:51>> First, a lot of Auburn's points were
- 3:52foul. I mean, it was honestly both
- 3:54teams. It was a lot of foul trips. And
- 3:57um I think that's the thing is we saw
- 3:59from you know in the NIT and someone
- 4:01asked it in postgame of like you know
- 4:02the whole goal is like in theory a lot
- 4:04of your younger guys Auburn Zinger team
- 4:06you want them to improve you know get
- 4:08more chemistry whatever and for guys
- 4:11like Sebastian Williams Adams or Philip
- 4:12who kind of struggled down the stretch
- 4:14of SEC play kind of started to hit those
- 4:17um freshman walls both had really good
- 4:20nights tonight.
- 4:20>> Yeah that's a good point. both of them
- 4:22really just kind of faded down the
- 4:24stretch of SEC play. Um, which you know
- 4:26to your point that does happen for a lot
- 4:28of those guys. Um, but another guy who
- 4:30had not been you who had had some
- 4:32flashes late in SEC play, Elijah Freeman
- 4:34ever since entering the starting lineup.
- 4:35This was one of his biggest games in
- 4:37quite a while. 19.7 rebounds, two
- 4:39blocks, and a steal. Just a really good
- 4:41all-around game for him. Um, this was
- 4:43the most points he had scored since the
- 4:45Queens game all the way back in
- 4:46non-conference. I mean, it's been it's
- 4:48been a minute since since he had played
- 4:50this well on the offensive end of the
- 4:52floor. He was four of four from deep in
- 4:54the second half. Him and Kevin over
- 4:55Kevin over did his thing. Uh Sebastian
- 4:57Williams said that the team refers to
- 4:59him as the second half merchant. Uh
- 5:01which is pretty pretty apt. Uh they
- 5:02combined for seven three-pointers after
- 5:04halftime. But to your point, Patrick,
- 5:07you lump Freeman in there in there as
- 5:09well. Magwood had a really nice play and
- 5:10and one early on. Wasn't really his
- 5:12night to like I don't know. He shot he
- 5:14didn't he shot probably just fine, but
- 5:15it's like the focus wasn't really on
- 5:18him, but you can put him in there as
- 5:19well of like
- 5:20>> had two assists.
- 5:20>> Had two assists and no turnovers. He's
- 5:22another one of those guys, but really to
- 5:24me it was that trio because I think that
- 5:26is the group the core of youngsters cuz
- 5:29Magwood situation. We'll see what
- 5:30happens in the offseason, but like Sway,
- 5:32Yovic, and Freeman are the guys that I
- 5:35think Auburn fans look at and say,
- 5:36"Okay, their ceilings are probably
- 5:38pretty high. You want to hang on to them
- 5:40and coach them through another year."
- 5:41And so I think it's it's uh it's it's
- 5:43it's the outcome you wanted by accepting
- 5:46an NIT bid. Hey, you can win a few games
- 5:49on your home floor and see your young
- 5:50guys maybe, you know, get a little bit
- 5:51more reps.
- 5:52>> And I mean, even Kevin Overton, too, not
- 5:54a freshman at all, but you again, and
- 5:57he's continued to play well.
- 5:58>> Yeah. I mean, he those four guys really,
- 6:00it's like if you if you start there next
- 6:02season, that would be a that would be a
- 6:04big a big uh a big point for this team.
- 6:06But I mean, not even looking forward to
- 6:07next season. They will play another game
- 6:09here with an opportunity to uh to make
- 6:11it to the uh semi-finals. They're now
- 6:13going to be in the quarter
- 6:14quarterfinals. They've never made it off
- 6:15campus
- 6:16>> in the NIT. Usually the semi and
- 6:19championship game are played in Madison
- 6:20Square Garden. This year they will be in
- 6:22Indianapolis at Hinglefield House will
- 6:24be the semi-finals. That's where Butler
- 6:25plays basketball. And then I do not
- 6:27remember the name of the Pacers arena,
- 6:28but that's where the championship game
- 6:30is. And so we'll see if at Gainbridge we
- 6:32will see if they are able to take down a
- 6:34Nevada team that's very good um that
- 6:36that was kind of a bubble team middle of
- 6:39the season and then it was like okay
- 6:40they're just not going to do enough
- 6:41unless they win their conference
- 6:42tournaments. You see lots of kind of
- 6:44teams like that. Seattle was one that
- 6:45that maybe kind of fell into that
- 6:47category as well. But uh they're going
- 6:49to bring kind of a more well-rounded I
- 6:51think you've seen Patrick these first
- 6:52couple teams I hesitate to say gimmicky.
- 6:54South Alabama was definitely gimmicky.
- 6:56The zone was definitely gimmicky.
- 6:57Seattle is not. they were more
- 6:59well-rounded and they shot the ball way
- 7:00better than they usually do because
- 7:01Armer's defense is bad, but like it was
- 7:04kind of, hey, you're way bigger than
- 7:05them. They have a shot blocker who's six
- 7:07foot seven. If you can just kind of get
- 7:08away from him, you can you can do
- 7:10whatever you want. Nevada's going to be
- 7:11more well-rounded. And uh we'll see.
- 7:13What did you say? You said in your 2009
- 7:16>> 2009
- 7:16>> was the last time they made it this far.
- 7:18>> Yes. And the last time they've been in
- 7:19the IT until this year as well.
- 7:21>> Gotcha. Gotcha. So they they'll be, you
- 7:22know, they talk about making history,
- 7:24but you know, this is this is still this
- 7:26is still an opportunity for this team to
- 7:27be playing games into late March. It's
- 7:29an opportunity, like Patrick said, if
- 7:31you want to get off some jokes about the
- 7:33fact that if you're, you know, Auburn
- 7:34fan, if your team's still playing while
- 7:36other teams are not, that's those are
- 7:38always some nice lowhanging fruit that
- 7:40you can take in the in the NIT. So, uh,
- 7:42Auburn gets a gets a win here on its
- 7:43home floor. And really, I think you and
- 7:45I talked about this when they took the
- 7:46bid, like, you know, getting three games
- 7:48on your home floor is like from a even
- 7:51just bottom of the barrel baseline
- 7:53revenue perspective, like, well, that's
- 7:55a big win. You know, it's the maximum
- 7:57amount of games you could get on your
- 7:59campus. And I think it the fact that
- 8:01they got there, obviously, they want to
- 8:02make it a step further, but I I do think
- 8:04you can look at this NIT birth for them
- 8:06right now and say, "Okay, you you
- 8:07probably did the right thing all things
- 8:09cons."
- 8:09>> Yeah. And it's like you it was easy. not
- 8:10like easy, but like you didn't have to
- 8:12go travel anywhere or do anything. Like
- 8:14poor Seattle. I heard they took three
- 8:16flights to get here because it was that
- 8:18late notice. Um we'll see about Nevada.
- 8:21But um yeah, it's the thing is like and
- 8:22Sebastian even said it post game like I
- 8:24would have just been bored training.
- 8:25Like I'm glad I just am on campus
- 8:27getting to play games.
- 8:28>> I think that point spoke to I think that
- 8:32sort of illustrates when when you when
- 8:33you read between the lines of that one a
- 8:35little bit. What do players who are
- 8:37bored and just sitting around and
- 8:39watching other teams play basketball,
- 8:40what does that sort of breed? That
- 8:42breeds more conversations about what are
- 8:43you going to do next season? That breeds
- 8:45more conversations about why aren't you
- 8:46playing in the NCAA tournament? I think
- 8:48it's all that kind of that kind of
- 8:50speaks to why this was important just
- 8:53having those guys in practice and Steven
- 8:55Pearl being able to keep coaching those
- 8:57basketball players because when they're
- 8:58being coached and they're playing
- 8:59basketball with their teammates, they're
- 9:01not talking to people about the
- 9:02potential of entering the transfer
- 9:03portal. They're not talking to people
- 9:04about, well, what are you going to do
- 9:05next season? Those conversations will
- 9:07come. But I thought you're you're right.
- 9:08When when Sway said, I'd be kind of
- 9:10bored. I'm imagining a talented young
- 9:13basketball player just sitting around
- 9:15and just getting some phone calls. Not
- 9:17even necessarily other teams, but you
- 9:18know, people getting in your ear about
- 9:19what you're going to do next season.
- 9:20Instead, you get to, you know, have some
- 9:22fun with your teammates out on the court
- 9:23for for another few games. And so, we
- 9:25will see what time uh, you know, Auburn
- 9:26plays Nevada this week inside of Neville
- 9:29Arena. We Tuesday would be I don't Maybe
- 9:31I'll eat these words. I don't see
- 9:32Tuesday. I I don't know how you'd give
- 9:34the one seed one day's one day break and
- 9:36also Nevada having to come across the
- 9:38country just on one day in between like
- 9:40how you'd practice and travel on the
- 9:41same day. I mean that would just be a
- 9:43nightmare and so can't surely that would
- 9:45not happen. Surely they're going to play
- 9:46Wednesday but we'll we'll we'll see by
- 9:48the time you watch this you know most
- 9:49likely and so for Patrick Bingham I'm
- 9:51Nathan King. Thank you guys so much for
- 9:53watching this edition of the postgame
- 9:55pod as we continue to move on in the NIT
- 9:57here at Neville Arena. Head over to
