- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett. All right, you know it's
- 0:06Speaker 1: serious when that theme music is on my Instagram because
- 0:10Speaker 1: this podcast is ranked top 15 of the group I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: in for top host as of last night. Keep me
- 0:19Speaker 1: at top 10. We're at the sixth spot right now.
- 0:22Speaker 1: And boy, oh boy, if this podcast can keep advancing
- 0:25Speaker 1: into the top host, you know, running, uh, You know,
- 0:29Speaker 1: something special could be happening here.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We'll have to find out.
- 0:32Speaker 1: But I will tell you, I covered the Mike Gallagher
- 0:34Speaker 1: show the last couple of days. And Mike had a very,
- 0:38Speaker 1: as an engineer for Eric, and Mike had a very interesting.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Topic yesterday, which I didn't even get a chance to
- 0:45Speaker 2: follow up with you on.
- 0:49Speaker 1: If you're in Florida, and I know this podcast gets
- 0:51Speaker 1: listened to in Florida because it seems to be listened
- 0:53Speaker 1: to statewide everywhere, uh, There's an amendment on the ballot
- 0:59Speaker 1: this November 3rd that could expand homestead property tax exemptions
- 1:05Speaker 1: for non-school taxes. It sounds a lot of gobbledygook, but
- 1:12Speaker 1: if they continue to expand eliminating property taxes, I love
- 1:20Speaker 1: New York City, but I would look for a house
- 1:22Speaker 1: there because, you know, who wouldn't want to pay Who
- 1:27Speaker 1: wouldn't want to pay for property taxes? Especially up here,
- 1:32Speaker 1: knowing that we get sacked with a pita tear tax
- 1:35Speaker 1: in New York.
- 1:37Speaker 2: You have two homes.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Florida expanding, if they get 60% of the voters on
- 1:45Speaker 1: board with it, would expand the homestead exemption for all
- 1:48Speaker 1: non-school taxes to $ 150, 000 in 2027 and $ 250, 000 in 2026.
- 1:57Speaker 1: allowing the floral legislature to allow counties and cities to
- 2:02Speaker 1: expand the exemption further, potentially eliminating all non-school homestead property taxes.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Why do we all want to live in a world
- 2:14Speaker 1: where we don't have to pay any property taxes for
- 2:16Speaker 1: our homes, especially here in New York? Now, it's kind
- 2:22Speaker 1: of weird because I love New York City and I
- 2:23Speaker 1: really don't want to leave. However, I could see the
- 2:27Speaker 1: allure of Florida bringing more people down. Opponents of the bill,
- 2:33Speaker 1: according to the Florida Phoenix, have warned that loss of
- 2:36Speaker 1: tax revenue could put damaging pressure on local budgets, public safety,
- 2:41Speaker 1: and other community services. Ryan, I know you have family
- 2:44Speaker 1: down there and you visit there often. I don't believe
- 2:48Speaker 1: there's a sales tax as of right now in Florida,
- 2:51Speaker 1: which makes it even more appealing for people to stay there.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Now you add this, uh, additional possibility of no property taxes,
- 3:03Speaker 1: it is very, very, I don't want to say the
- 3:07Speaker 1: word seductive, but it is very appealing.
- 3:10Speaker 2: You know, I.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Could go down there with a house or whatever for
- 3:18Speaker 1: spring training and watch all the Yankees play in Tampa,
- 3:22Speaker 1: then come back to New York, you know, that type
- 3:23Speaker 1: of thing.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't have the money for that. But you
- 3:26Speaker 2: get my point. Why can't we adopt these kind of
- 3:30Speaker 2: things up here? Why are we always strong-armed and muscled
- 3:37Speaker 2: out of our money? I was talking about this yesterday.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Full disclosure, I won $ 10, 000 with Fanatics, okay? I'm going
- 3:46Speaker 2: to say that, and I'm very proud of that.
- 3:48Speaker 1: And it's pretty public now because Fanatics was posted about it.
- 3:55Speaker 1: You don't think by the time the IRS comes around,
- 3:59Speaker 1: they're going to want, they're going to not want some
- 4:01Speaker 1: of that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Like, I pray they don't. I pray they let me
- 4:04Speaker 2: keep my 10 grand. But this is New York after all.
- 4:08Speaker 2: This is New York.
- 4:10Speaker 1: And you look at that gubernatorial race and you look
- 4:14Speaker 1: at how Hochul is claiming she had the lowest taxes
- 4:18Speaker 1: and then Blakeman responding, no, she has the highest taxes.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So, you know, this is where we are in New York.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And then in the city, you've got a mayor that
- 4:28Speaker 1: thinks it's okay to tax you for being well off
- 4:32Speaker 1: enough to own a second home. Oh, and then docks
- 4:37Speaker 1: all the people who have second homes. This is why
- 4:43Speaker 1: New York will not sustain. Because I'm sure even the
- 4:48Speaker 1: younger generation is going to look at what's happening down
- 4:50Speaker 1: in Florida. and say, oh, you know, my grandparents are there,
- 4:55Speaker 1: my family's there, my aunt and uncle's there, and now
- 4:58Speaker 1: I want to get to pay property tax if this
- 5:00Speaker 1: gets through on November 3rd, if Amendment 3 gets through,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you could see more and more and more businesses and
- 5:12Speaker 1: people and, you know, all.
- 5:14Speaker 2: The like leaving our state for that reason. So, I guess....
- 5:23Speaker 1: Why I think it's so interesting is because I wish
- 5:26Speaker 1: I could just be in the ear of our governor
- 5:28Speaker 1: and our mayor and say, look what Florida is doing.
- 5:31Speaker 1: You want to bring back 420,000 people we lost in
- 5:35Speaker 1: the pandemic to leaving the state?
- 5:41Speaker 2: You're all at some tax relief.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Not continual taxing on our backs.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Because.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yes, New York's amazing to live in, and it's a
- 5:53Speaker 1: beautiful place, and I really don't want to move anywhere else.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But we're not being ingenuitive like this.
- 6:02Speaker 2: We're not being for the people.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Like I feel like Florida is by potentially having a
- 6:11Speaker 1: ballot measure that eliminates property taxes on homestead properties. Now,
- 6:18Speaker 1: do I think it's crazy to own a second or
- 6:20Speaker 1: third home with no taxes?
- 6:22Speaker 2: Maybe so. At least three homes. That's kind of crazy.
- 6:24Speaker 2: But the idea of we're going to bring you relief.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I'm not getting that message this gubernatorial election up here. Instead,
- 6:36Speaker 1: the message I'm getting is vote for me and I'll
- 6:40Speaker 1: still stand with Mom Donnie.
- 6:42Speaker 2: And I'll still... Be.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Okay with him taxing you through the nose like I'm
- 6:46Speaker 1: going to do in New York. Vote for me and
- 6:48Speaker 1: you'll get more corruption like, I don't know, kickbacks for
- 6:51Speaker 1: all the Buffalo Bills.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Stadium building that went on and all that fun stuff.
- 6:57Speaker 2: That's on the ballot here in New York.
- 7:02Speaker 1: With Blakeman, I feel like we'd have an ease of taxes.
- 7:08Speaker 1: We have an ease of things. And it'd be easier
- 7:13Speaker 1: to live here because it'd be safer to live here.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I just don't see it. I don't see how that's
- 7:24Speaker 1: possible under Hochul. And whoever becomes governor, I do wish
- 7:29Speaker 1: they could look at what's going on in Florida with
- 7:31Speaker 1: this property tax amendment and say, gee, don't we want
- 7:38Speaker 1: the billionaires and the millionaires to continue to contribute to
- 7:40Speaker 1: New York Shouldn't we alleviate the pressures on them to
- 7:45Speaker 1: stay and continue to invest in our city? I know
- 7:48Speaker 1: I said this about the peer-to-tear tax a few months ago,
- 7:52Speaker 1: that these taxes are basically saying to billionaires, we don't
- 7:56Speaker 1: want you to support.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Our state or our city.
- 7:58Speaker 1: And that's wrong. That's very wrong. So, what I would
- 8:07Speaker 1: like to do is on this podcast propose that Whoever
- 8:12Speaker 1: wins governor, take a look at what's going on down
- 8:15Speaker 1: in Florida.
- 8:17Speaker 2: And change things here. Bring relief here.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Welcome the contributions and the fact that billionaires want to
- 8:29Speaker 1: live here. Don't stand on the street corner where they
- 8:31Speaker 1: live and say, hey, this is where Ken Griffin lives.
- 8:34Speaker 1: What an idiot move that was, Mayor Momdani. What an
- 8:38Speaker 1: idiot move that was. And a dangerous move at that.
- 8:47Speaker 1: So what a dynamic. You've got Florida who says, we
- 8:51Speaker 1: want to potentially eliminate property taxes overall. And you've got
- 8:58Speaker 1: the state of New York saying, well, we're going to
- 8:59Speaker 1: tax you through the wazoo. And by the way, punish
- 9:03Speaker 1: you for being well off and successful because, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 1: the guy.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And I don't mean this any bad way when I
- 9:12Speaker 2: say this.
- 9:13Speaker 1: But meanwhile, the guy who strives to only work at
- 9:15Speaker 1: McDonald's gets the same treatment for not working as hard.
- 9:22Speaker 2: I don't think that's right. We were built on competition.
- 9:29Speaker 2: We were built on capitalism. Can it go too far?
- 9:37Speaker 2: Absolutely it can.
- 9:40Speaker 1: But to then say we're going to take it into
- 9:44Speaker 1: our own hands and punish those who have used capitalism
- 9:48Speaker 1: for their benefit and who have worked hard for their
- 9:51Speaker 1: money simply because they want to give it to those
- 9:56Speaker 1: who are basically can sometimes, can I say, commit fraud.
- 10:02Speaker 1: They commit fraud when you pay into Medicaid and some
- 10:05Speaker 1: of those people don't even need it. Minnesota's now back
- 10:12Speaker 1: in the spotlight because of all the fraud they've been
- 10:14Speaker 1: going through. And basically it's under siege up in Minnesota
- 10:19Speaker 1: with that. And I'm glad that I was able to
- 10:26Speaker 1: work the board yesterday for this because when I heard
- 10:31Speaker 1: that property taxes could be eliminated in Florida entirely, I
- 10:41Speaker 1: feel like it needs to be talked about because New
- 10:44Speaker 1: York would never, never eliminate taxes to that extent. They
- 10:50Speaker 1: would just continue adding taxes and adding pressures. You know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: they say the opponents of the bill are worried the
- 10:57Speaker 1: pressures it's going to cause on essential services and domestic,
- 11:06Speaker 1: not disputes, but like domestic issues.
- 11:07Speaker 2: You know, like the local fire department, local police, local,
- 11:11Speaker 2: I don't know, mayor's office. I don't know. Just local services.
- 11:19Speaker 2: But what about a world where we're not pressuring citizens?
- 11:26Speaker 2: To pay out so much for all their hard work.
- 11:35Speaker 2: What about a world where we're not taking money from
- 11:41Speaker 2: those who have really.
- 11:44Speaker 1: Worked to achieve that level of buying a second home?
- 11:49Speaker 1: And instead, maybe letting them support those who cannot make
- 11:55Speaker 1: it on their own or letting them support or encouraging
- 12:02Speaker 1: those who may not be as well off that there
- 12:05Speaker 1: are opportunities out there. For goodness sakes, this is Disability
- 12:10Speaker 1: Employment Awareness Month. And as I always say, whether you're
- 12:14Speaker 1: an athlete, whether you're a politician, most times, whether you're
- 12:20Speaker 1: a person with disabilities, whether you're a radio host, whether
- 12:23Speaker 1: you're an investment banker, whatever you are, you are a taxpayer.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That's what brings us all together in either upset or excitement.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Over tax cuts. Upset over more taxes, excitement over tax cuts.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Because we all pay into this. But to be asked
- 12:52Speaker 2: to continually.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Pay in and then pay in even more And then say, oh,
- 12:56Speaker 1: hope you stay here and support us.
- 13:00Speaker 2: It's not right.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So I hope New York looks at what Florida's doing
- 13:06Speaker 1: and says, okay. We can charge property taxes on the
- 13:12Speaker 1: bigger homes. But don't keep going after people for being
- 13:19Speaker 1: well off. Or they will go to Florida and pay
- 13:23Speaker 1: no taxes at all. That's the future I'm seeing here
- 13:27Speaker 1: at One Look Up Alex Media.
