- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Psalm 136 and I
- 0:20absolutely love this Psalm. This is one of my favorites.
- 0:24If you've been at Tabernacle over the last two 2 1/2 years,
- 0:31I've read through this Psalm with you guys at the very least
- 0:36at the last Pine praise service that we did back in November.
- 0:42It is just a wonderful joy. And part of the fun of Psalm 136
- 0:47is that it's a call and response.
- 0:50So I'm trying to think of a a good call and response song that
- 0:56that's maybe just more like regular that you might hear out
- 0:59and about. I feel like there's a baseball
- 1:04song and someone's going to be like, Brian, how in the world
- 1:08don't you know the name of this song?
- 1:10Listen, I haven't been to that many ball games, but you get the
- 1:14Dun Dun, hey, Dun Dun. I bet I'm going to get copyright
- 1:20struck for that, for that melody.
- 1:24But there's that song where there's the music portion and
- 1:27then everyone kind of does the hey portion of it.
- 1:30And that that's kind of the kind of the picture that you get from
- 1:36this particular Psalm, that there is an initial person that
- 1:40is saying or singing these truths about God.
- 1:45And then there's the response, likely from either a choir or
- 1:50from just the entire congregation, that they would
- 1:53respond to these statements about God or these remembrances
- 2:00of what God has done by saying his faithful love indoors
- 2:04forever. And here over and over and over
- 2:09again within this Psalm, I'm going to count how many times it
- 2:13does it 26 times in this Psalm, we, we will read or hear the
- 2:21phrase. It is God's faithful, loyal,
- 2:26steadfast, covenant love. One of the first translators of
- 2:32Scripture into the English language, William Tyndale, he
- 2:36actually invented a whole new word in English to try and
- 2:41describe this Hebrew word. And he invented the word loving
- 2:46kindness. And so you'll see that pop up in
- 2:50the King James Version. I think it might even be in some
- 2:54modern translations that are a little more like the New
- 2:57American Standard Bible. You'll find it in the the New
- 3:01King James Version. But loving kindness was the word
- 3:06that was used. It was both there is
- 3:08relationship and there is active love as a result of that
- 3:13relationship. I believe it might be either the
- 3:17new English translation or the English standard version that
- 3:23call it either loyal love or like covenant love, something
- 3:28like that. And I really enjoy that
- 3:31phrasing. I, I think communicates well
- 3:34what this word means over and over and over again throughout
- 3:37the Psalm. So let's read you, you know now
- 3:41what that phrase is. It's the fact that God has a
- 3:44relationship with his people by covenant.
- 3:48He is, He is bound himself to us and certainly us as people of
- 3:53God. That takes place in what Christ
- 3:57accomplished for us, and on the cross, our redemption was
- 4:01purchased. And so as a result of that, God
- 4:03has a covenant relationship with us.
- 4:07And because of that relationship, He is going to act
- 4:11like He loves us because He has promised to love us.
- 4:16So let's read through and I'm super excited.
- 4:19Give thanks to Yahweh for He is good.
- 4:23His faithful love endures forever.
- 4:25Give thanks to the God of Gods, the Elohim of Elohim.
- 4:30His faithful love endures forever.
- 4:32Give thanks to the Lord of Lords.
- 4:34His faithful love endures forever.
- 4:37He alone does great wonders. His faithful love endures
- 4:41forever. He made the heavens skillfully.
- 4:44His faithful love endures forever.
- 4:46He spread the land on the waters.
- 4:48His faithful love endures forever.
- 4:51He made the great lights. His faithful love endures
- 4:54forever. The sun to rule by day.
- 4:57His faithful love endures forever.
- 4:59The moon and stars to rule by night.
- 5:02His faithful love endures forever.
- 5:05He struck the first born of the Egyptians.
- 5:08His faithful love endures forever and brought Israel out
- 5:12from among them. His faithful love endures
- 5:14forever. With a strong hand and
- 5:17outstretched arm. His faithful love endures
- 5:20forever. He divided the Red Sea.
- 5:23His faithful love endures forever and let his real
- 5:26through. His faithful love endures
- 5:29forever. But her old pharaoh and his army
- 5:32into the Red Sea. His faithful love endures
- 5:35forever. He let his people in the
- 5:37wilderness. His faithful love endures
- 5:40forever. He struck down great kings.
- 5:42His faithful love endures forever and slaughtered famous
- 5:46kings His faithful love endures forever.
- 5:49Saihon, king of the Amorites, his faithful love endures
- 5:53forever And Ogg, king of Bashan, His faithful love endures
- 5:57forever. And gave their land as an
- 6:00inheritance. His faithful love endures
- 6:02forever. And inheritance to Israel, His
- 6:05servant. His faithful love endures
- 6:08forever. He remembered us in our
- 6:11humiliation. His faithful love endures
- 6:14forever. And rescued us from our foes.
- 6:17His faithful love endures forever.
- 6:20He gives food to every creature. His faithful love endures
- 6:24forever. Give thanks to the God of
- 6:27heaven. His faithful love endures
- 6:30forever. Man, what a cool portion of
- 6:34scripture. I am sure you're like Brian.
- 6:36I never want you. I never want to hear you say
- 6:40that one phrase again. It's just too many times.
- 6:43The constant reminder to us is that in our hard times, in our
- 6:49questions about our world and ultimate reality, when it comes
- 6:53to our past, when it comes to our future, but when it comes to
- 6:58our redemption, it is all centered on the person of who
- 7:03God is and what his character accomplishes.
- 7:08So let's walk through this Psalm and see what particular aspects
- 7:14this Psalm has for us. First, we're going to look at
- 7:17verses one through 3. So these are the three give
- 7:21thanks to God. And what's the why of that?
- 7:25So #1 He says give thanks to Yahweh for he is good.
- 7:31And I'm going to assume that this is the word toe.
- 7:34That is correct. So we give thanks to Yahweh,
- 7:37this personal God, the God who told us his own name.
- 7:41He's not just generic God, He is personally Yahweh, Jehovah.
- 7:49He is the great I am. He is the one who is in need of
- 7:53nothing and yet desires a relationship with you and I.
- 7:57And so let's give thanks to Him. Why would we give thanks?
- 8:00Because He is the very definition of goodness.
- 8:04Something cannot be good. That is unlike God.
- 8:08And God gives us the standard for what goodness is.
- 8:12He lets us know how we ought to treat each other, how we ought
- 8:17to interact with a broken and a fallen world.
- 8:20God is there for us in all of it, and because of His
- 8:24consistent goodness, because of His personal relationship with
- 8:27us, let's give thanks to Him. Let us consistently be glad and
- 8:33rejoice in what the Lord has done and is doing and what He
- 8:37will do. And He does it all because of
- 8:40His faithful love, because He has a relationship and He's
- 8:43going to act in accordance with that relationship.
- 8:45Verse #2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
- 8:49This is the Elohim of Elohim. God is not the only spiritual
- 8:55being. We all know that they're also
- 8:58the what we would normally term the angels and the demons.
- 9:01We would think of Satan and Michael and Gabriel.
- 9:05And as we look at all of the spiritual beings, though they
- 9:08have incredible power and might, though they can make themselves
- 9:13appear in various forms. You can think about the serpent,
- 9:18the the snake, the dragon that tempted Adam and Eve in the
- 9:22Garden of Eden. You can think about even the
- 9:26silent behind the scenes moving where he can, even where Satan
- 9:30can even prompt Peter to tempt Jesus into rejecting the cross.
- 9:37As we think about the fact that Paul tells us that Satan himself
- 9:42appears as an Angel of light, as a messenger of light, I As we
- 9:48think about the Angel of death, both in the story of the Exodus
- 9:54and in the story where the children of Israel are
- 9:58surrounded at Jerusalem by the Assyrian army.
- 10:02And God delivers through having the death Angel go in and defeat
- 10:08the army so that many of the Assyrians flee away, even
- 10:12hearing about an assault that was happening in Assyria at that
- 10:16time. And we can read about that both
- 10:19in, I believe it's second Kings as well as in some like classic
- 10:26Assyrian history, we found things that talk about the siege
- 10:30of Jerusalem, the damage that they did, the surrounding towns,
- 10:34but did not do to Jerusalem itself and how they had to come
- 10:37back and how the king of that time perished in the ensuing
- 10:41fight that took place much closer to home.
- 10:44So you can go, wow, the angels are the other spiritual beings
- 10:48are so powerful. They can be so tricky.
- 10:52We don't even know that we are, if you will, sometimes pawns in
- 10:57this game, that we just have a thought and we think, Oh yeah,
- 10:59I, I should say this, or this is a good thought for me to adopt
- 11:03into my life when it can really be the temptation of Satan or we
- 11:08encounter a difficulty in our life and we might not realize
- 11:13that there is a demonic oppression in that, or we might
- 11:17not recognize that we have angelic help behind the scenes.
- 11:20It's quote UN quote, the unseen realm.
- 11:23It's the spiritual realm that we can't see.
- 11:25And so we could be really scared of the other spiritual beings if
- 11:29it were not for the fact that our God is the chief spiritual
- 11:33being. He's the one to whom no one else
- 11:36compares. He is the 1 completely unlike
- 11:39any other. He is the uncreated 1, he
- 11:42spiritual being above all other spiritual beings.
- 11:47And so we ought to give him thanks for his greatness.
- 11:49Verse #3 Give thanks to the Lord of the Lords.
- 11:53This is if I'm no correctly. Yeah, that's Adonai.
- 11:58Yeah, he's the Adonai of Adenine.
- 12:01He is the great master. He is the great Lord, the one
- 12:05that owns it all and is in charge of everything.
- 12:09And even as we have, you know, worldly people that are
- 12:13temporarily in charge of some things, you know, you can look
- 12:16at the president of the United States and he has some charge
- 12:20over some different things of Maryland that he governs.
- 12:24What happens in our state for this time.
- 12:27God is the One who is ultimately in charge, and He is the one who
- 12:32declares the end from the beginning, and so we ought to
- 12:36give thanks to Him that He is ultimately in charge, and so we
- 12:40can trust Him. Verse #4 says He alone does
- 12:46great wonders. There is no one that is like our
- 12:50God in what He has accomplished. You can look at all the annals
- 12:55of church, all the annals of world history, and you will
- 13:00never read about anyone doing the kinds of things that Jesus
- 13:04did. People would do things, perhaps
- 13:06in legend on a much greater scale, and they would defeat
- 13:10Medusa or they would defeat, you know, the the cyclops or the
- 13:14Minotaur. Jesus came and he raised
- 13:18children from the dead. He came and lepers, outcasts of
- 13:23society. He made them clean so that they
- 13:26could return and be with their families.
- 13:30Our God is so much cooler than any other God.
- 13:35He is the one who alone does great wonders.
- 13:39That God doesn't have to have the help of angels.
- 13:42God doesn't have to have the help of mankind in order to
- 13:46accomplish His deeds and His work.
- 13:48When it came to our salvation, Jesus did it and Jesus alone did
- 13:54it. It wasn't that Jesus needed the
- 13:56help of Peter or Jesus didn't need the help of even Moses or
- 14:00great holy man like Elijah or someone else.
- 14:04No, Jesus alone, our God alone, does great wonders and He does
- 14:10it because of His love. He doesn't do it to be a show
- 14:14off though. He could show off and we could
- 14:16be amazed at the great wonder working God.
- 14:18But because of His love, God does wonders.
- 14:21Verse #5 He made the heavens skillfully.
- 14:26That is all of the skies above everywhere where the spiritual
- 14:31realm is as and as much as we could ever see with our eyes or
- 14:36look through telescopes to behold God has made it
- 14:40skillfully and I'm so glad for that.
- 14:43Even the last, you know, 200, two, 150 years of science have
- 14:48shown us how finely tuned our universe is so that for our
- 14:54Earth's like tilt and access axis and distance from the sun
- 15:01to be adjusted by even a few degrees would mean that life
- 15:04would be completely inhospitable or life would be incapable of
- 15:10existing on planet earth. And as we look at all of our
- 15:14universe, we can see that it is greatly, wonderfully, skillfully
- 15:19made. And God made the heavens
- 15:20skillfully because of his covenant love for us.
- 15:24Think about that, that God made the stars and the sun and the
- 15:28moon and the asteroids and the meteors and the comets.
- 15:31He made it because of his love for you.
- 15:34Are you enjoying the works of God's hands?
- 15:37Do you look up into the sky or do you even look at, you know,
- 15:41pictures or videos on your phone of what God has created in the
- 15:45heavens and are you thankful to Him?
- 15:48Are you reminded of the fact that just as He made those
- 15:51things with incredible specificity, He made you and He
- 15:55loves you and He created you intentionally so that you would
- 15:59know and experience His love in Christ Jesus forever?
- 16:05What an amazing thought. Verse number six.
- 16:08He spread the land on the waters.
- 16:11His faithful love endures forever that he didn't have to
- 16:16make the the dry land. He could have just had their BC
- 16:20on the earth, and He would have been a powerful God having made
- 16:25all of that, but He made the land so that we could be on the
- 16:29land so that we would have a place to live because He loves
- 16:34us. And that love is an everlasting,
- 16:37a forever enduring love. Verse #7 He made the great
- 16:42lights. His faithful love endures
- 16:45forever. This would be not just like sun,
- 16:49moon and stars, though certainly that would be the main thing in
- 16:53mind here. There was, especially in the
- 16:57ancient Near East for a very long time, always a connection
- 17:03between the heavenly bodies would be, you know, an older
- 17:07phrase that people would use, the heavenly bodies and
- 17:10spiritual beings that there was assumed to be a connection.
- 17:13These things are moving. Well, what moves a living things
- 17:17move, and especially as they move orderly and you can always
- 17:22know where it's going. And so that was the assumption
- 17:26that was always made. So here are these great lights.
- 17:28It is, yes, the sun, moon and stars, but it's also the angelic
- 17:33host that every single day are able to give us light in the
- 17:39morning and light at night, that we're able to tell the seasons
- 17:45and the months and the years by these luminaries.
- 17:49And so God is the one that made all of this to take place.
- 17:53God created, yes, our solar system, and he created all of
- 17:58the stars, but he also created the spiritual beings and he
- 18:02commands them. They are not his rivals.
- 18:05Instead, he is their Lord and God and Master.
- 18:10Verse #8 So continuing the thought, he made the great
- 18:13lights, the sun to rule by day, and he made the sun so that we
- 18:19would experience his love every single day.
- 18:22You can think of in Lamentations where Jeremiah writes that God's
- 18:28mercies are new every morning and every morning that comes we
- 18:33are reminded of the fact that God has mercy towards us that He
- 18:36doesn't view us with. How can I beat them down?
- 18:40His desire is that we would experience and share with others
- 18:44His faithful love. The sun is a reminder of the
- 18:47consistent, loyal, covenant, steadfast love of God to you.
- 18:52Verse #9 The moon and stars to rule by night.
- 18:56Though we don't as often utilize the moon and stars now.
- 19:00Now we have our you know, St. lights and we have our you know,
- 19:04lights on our cars and everything to be able to see at
- 19:08night or it within a house. You know, you've got light bulbs
- 19:13and TV's and 1000 other things. But what a joy that God created
- 19:18the moon and stars to remind us of his love for us, of his
- 19:23consistency and his faithfulness.
- 19:25And even as we look at the Old Testament and Exodus in
- 19:29particular, as God sets up the various times of year that
- 19:34Israel would celebrate the, the various feasts and festivals as
- 19:39every single year, which you determine by the moving of these
- 19:44heavenly bodies that that was linked with freedom and the year
- 19:50of Jubilee. And you know, every 7th kind of
- 19:53Sabbath year, all of that was meant to bless and bless
- 20:00mankind, to help remind them of who was in charge of what, of
- 20:07who their calendar days and years belonged to, and even
- 20:12every seven days. That rotation of the sun and
- 20:16moon and stars every seven days they were reminded God rested on
- 20:21the 7th day and so we can rest as well.
- 20:26Then in verses 10 through 22 is dealing with the Exodus and the
- 20:37people's wandering in the wilderness for 40 years as a
- 20:40result of their sin and refusal to follow God's instructions
- 20:47that God was with them in all sorts of situations.
- 20:51I I have run out of time so I'll summarize these portions.
- 20:56I think there's a couple other episodes like Psalm one O 7 and
- 20:59some others that you can look at that deal with this thought.
- 21:03But God exacting vengeance, justice on Egypt for the crimes
- 21:12they had committed against Israel in the sight of a holy
- 21:16God was viewed as God's covenant love to Israel.
- 21:20That just as the Egyptians had killed all of their goal was to
- 21:26kill all of the baby boys of Israel.
- 21:29When God in divine justice with warning and with a way out of
- 21:33it, when He struck the first born of the Egyptians, it was an
- 21:37act of justice. It was still even in his
- 21:41justice, there was an act of love.
- 21:43There was a way of escape for anyone that would take it.
- 21:47God brought Israel out from among the Egyptians, something
- 21:50that they didn't think would be able to happen.
- 21:53It says that He did this with a strong hand and an outstretched
- 21:56arm. I love the song Forever by Chris
- 21:59Tomlin that takes a lot of these lines just straight from Psalm
- 22:03136 and sings that. I've linked that in the show
- 22:05notes. But I love that the God is a
- 22:07strong hand and an outstretched arm like he, he's going, he is
- 22:11fighting for his people because he loves them.
- 22:13He divides the Red Sea, He leads Israel through.
- 22:16But when Pharaoh and his army tried to follow, to kill the
- 22:20children of Israel, then he hurled them into the Red Sea.
- 22:24And that was justice for the evil that had been committed by
- 22:29the by the Egyptians, by Pharaoh, and by his government
- 22:33over the course of generations, that there was that justice that
- 22:37was done towards them. And God, even through his
- 22:40people's failing, he led them in the wilderness.
- 22:42And when kings of the Amorites and the the nation of Bashan, as
- 22:48they tried to attack Israel, God gave victory to this wandering
- 22:52wilderness people who were not trained warriors, they were
- 22:55slaves. And yet God saved their lives
- 23:00again and again and even gave the land of those that had
- 23:03attacked the Israelites, gave them their land as an
- 23:07inheritance as well. And then the Psalm ends with
- 23:10verses 23 through 26. He remembered us in our
- 23:13humiliation and rescued us from our foes.
- 23:15You can think of the time of the judges and all of the things
- 23:18that happened there. This could also have in mind as
- 23:21well the exile to to Babylon or to Assyria for the northern
- 23:26Kingdom of Israel that God remembered his people and he
- 23:31brought them back again. And then verses 25 and 26 and,
- 23:35and he gives food to every creature, anyone that eats
- 23:38anything that is from the hand of God.
- 23:41And verse 26, give thanks to the God of heaven.
- 23:44His faithful love endures forever for everything that God
- 23:48is, for all the wonders that he has accomplished, for what he
- 23:51has done in our past, for what He will do in our future, for
- 23:54what He gives us daily in our food right now, He ought to be
- 23:58given thanks. Thank you for tuning in today.
- 24:01Hope that you have a wonderful day.
