Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to twenty twenty eight.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Like it's today, Chuck Todd, Chris lets us Super Tuesdays.
- 0:11Speaker 2: We are gonna talk twenty twenty eight Republican field because
- 0:14Speaker 2: last week on Super Tuesdays we did our Democratic field.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We did a lot of AOC talk. I got a
- 0:19Speaker 2: lot of email about that, Chuck, which is good. It
- 0:21Speaker 2: was mostly productive. It wasn't like you idiots. So if
- 0:25Speaker 2: you miss that, go back and check it out. We're
- 0:28Speaker 2: gonna do a bunch of stuff. But let's start twenty
- 0:30Speaker 2: twenty eight Republicans. I want to pull something up here
- 0:32Speaker 2: which I did last time too, and I always say this. Look,
- 0:35Speaker 2: polymarket sponsors some of my stuff. They do not sponsor this.
- 0:38Speaker 2: We use polymarket, we use Klshi, Chuck and I. However,
- 0:41Speaker 2: do we use FanDuel.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We do FanDuel in the background.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Different we do use these markets, right, So I just
- 0:49Speaker 2: want to pull this up, Chuck, all right, so you
- 0:51Speaker 2: can see this. So here's what's interesting. I have two
- 0:53Speaker 2: observations about this. Basically, this kind of looks like a
- 0:57Speaker 2: two person race Vance forty nobody else above three. And
- 1:01Speaker 2: the people who are above three are Tucker Carlson, Donald
- 1:04Speaker 2: Trump Senior, Ron de Santis and Donald Trump Junior? Who
- 1:07Speaker 2: can you talk about that? But also Chuck. So that's
- 1:09Speaker 2: observation one. Observation two that I want to talk about.
- 1:12Speaker 1: You get in here ish early June, and Rubio is
- 1:15Speaker 1: like almost passing Vance, and then the rest of the
- 1:19Speaker 1: summer Vance kind of lengthens out.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Uh, Which Let's talk about the field first, because I
- 1:25Speaker 2: did say when we talked last week, I said, look,
- 1:27Speaker 2: the Republican field is probably a I don't know if
- 1:29Speaker 2: it's a shorter conversation, but it's a less candidate field
- 1:32Speaker 2: conversation than a Democratic field. Are the odds right that
- 1:36Speaker 2: it's Vance one, Rubyo two, everybody else?
- 1:40Speaker 1: Or is it too early to know?
- 1:43Speaker 3: Go Look, history would tell you that that is correct.
- 1:48Speaker 3: As much as I want to say the prediction markets
- 1:50Speaker 3: are ahead of themselves or anything of this, that the
- 1:52Speaker 3: fact of the matter is a sitting vice president for
- 1:56Speaker 3: a term limited president is going to be the favorite
- 1:59Speaker 3: to get that out nation. Al Gore got the nomination
- 2:02Speaker 3: as a sitting vice president. You know, I think George H. W. Bush,
- 2:07Speaker 3: George H. W. Bush did the same thing. It was harder.
- 2:10Speaker 3: He probably had the hardest Like Vance. George H. W.
- 2:14Speaker 3: Bush was a compromise VP choice from another wing of
- 2:17Speaker 3: the party, right like, and he certainly had to work
- 2:19Speaker 3: for it, and it was a he didn't get the
- 2:23Speaker 3: he didn't get an easy path to a nomination, but
- 2:25Speaker 3: he was still that Richard Nixon after Dwight Eisenhower in
- 2:29Speaker 3: nineteen sixty. So Hubert Humphrey, you know, basically following in
- 2:33Speaker 3: the you know, Al Gore, Hubert Humphrey, I guess you
- 2:36Speaker 3: could throw Kamala Harris sort of in the same category.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Meaning it is just in this modern era hard to
- 2:44Speaker 3: deny the sitting vice president the nomination of their own party.
- 2:47Speaker 3: I mean, I really think not since Henry Wallace as
- 2:50Speaker 3: a sitting vice president you know, been sort of ousted
- 2:52Speaker 3: by a major party in some ways. So I'm I'm
- 2:57Speaker 3: you can't deny I just you know, Vance, And it
- 3:02Speaker 3: very much is like Kamala Harris. To me, here's a
- 3:04Speaker 3: person who reached the vice presidency despite never showing any
- 3:09Speaker 3: good success on the campaign trail. Like Kamala Harris has
- 3:12Speaker 3: been an underperformer in her campaigns. She underperformed in her
- 3:15Speaker 3: first AG race, she underperformed in the presidential race. J D.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Vance underperformed in the one time he ran for something, right,
- 3:23Speaker 3: So there's no positive track record to go off of.
- 3:26Speaker 3: There's there's really only skepticism. You know, al Gore had
- 3:30Speaker 3: won statewide on his own, actually sitting senator right to me,
- 3:35Speaker 3: Bush had at least run statewide and certainly ran for
- 3:41Speaker 3: president himself once before he got it. Nixon had won
- 3:45Speaker 3: statewide before he got there. So you know, I think
- 3:50Speaker 3: you have to make Vance the front runner. But you know,
- 3:52Speaker 3: to me, not being over fifty percent is actually quite
- 3:55Speaker 3: remarkable for a sitting vice president. And I think he's
- 3:59Speaker 3: this is probably the week as sitting vice president ahead
- 4:02Speaker 3: of a potential announcement that I can think of certainly
- 4:06Speaker 3: in our lifetime going into this.
- 4:10Speaker 1: So I agree with everything you said about Vance, and.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I do think that history people Republicans sometimes rewrite history.
- 4:18Speaker 3: JD.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Vance probably isn't even the nominee without Donald Trump, you
- 4:23Speaker 2: know what I mean, Like the republic the Republican Senate nominee,
- 4:26Speaker 2: I should be cleared, do you know what I mean?
- 4:28Speaker 1: Trump kind of drags him across the line.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Jadie Vance was getting into fistfights with Bernie Marino on
- 4:33Speaker 3: the rebate stage, and that thing looked like a complete
- 4:36Speaker 3: and utter debacle. You're like, wow, is Tim Ryan gonna
- 4:40Speaker 3: correct from this? I mean, it was just a come on, guys,
- 4:43Speaker 3: it was a show.
- 4:43Speaker 1: So I agree with you one hundred percent on that.
- 4:46Speaker 2: On the second thing, on the number in Vance being underwhelming,
- 4:51Speaker 2: how much of that is Vance? And how much of
- 4:53Speaker 2: it is This is what I keep coming back to,
- 4:56Speaker 2: how much of it is? Yes, Donald Trump will be
- 4:58Speaker 2: a two term Republican president, obviously nonconsecutive, but two term
- 5:02Speaker 2: Republican president, and J. D. Vance is the VP, which
- 5:05Speaker 2: exactly your point is usually a massive leg But Trump
- 5:09Speaker 2: is trending, let's just call it trending very poorly, even
- 5:13Speaker 2: among Republicans.
- 5:14Speaker 1: His numbers are starting in the road.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So I just wonder, is it's still probably you'd rather
- 5:20Speaker 2: be the sitting vice president of a not that popular
- 5:23Speaker 2: generally president than not But I present help?
- 5:27Speaker 3: I don't Can I present? Can I present my If
- 5:30Speaker 3: I were trying to defend JD. Vance's ability to get
- 5:33Speaker 3: this nomination, my evidence would be Gerald R. Ford here
- 5:37Speaker 3: was in some ways the sitting vice president, but also
- 5:41Speaker 3: the you know, he took over the president. He almost
- 5:44Speaker 3: lost the nomination, right, It came awfully close, and I
- 5:48Speaker 3: think Ford's prop seventy six might be as good of
- 5:51Speaker 3: a parallel as anti for Vance. In that you it
- 5:55Speaker 3: was the you realized it was a little bit of
- 5:58Speaker 3: a of a divide inside the party between between sort
- 6:02Speaker 3: of the conservative the Goldwater and sort of the Nixon
- 6:06Speaker 3: truthers in one corner that sort of rallied around Reagan,
- 6:10Speaker 3: and then you had Ford sort of the establishment, the bankers,
- 6:13Speaker 3: the Chamber of Commerce wing the Dick Cheney's of the world.
- 6:17Speaker 1: The country is Republicans as we used to call them.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yes, rallying around Ford. So I think, you know, I
- 6:23Speaker 3: think seventy six can be quite instructive, except Vance is
- 6:25Speaker 3: sort of in the reverse position. He's in that slot.
- 6:30Speaker 3: I think what seventy six tells you is how difficult
- 6:32Speaker 3: it will be for Vance, just like it was extraordinarily
- 6:35Speaker 3: difficult for Ford. If Trump loses both the House and
- 6:39Speaker 3: the Senate, I think Vance is even more vulnerable. Right.
- 6:43Speaker 3: It means that you could see more Republicans decide to
- 6:46Speaker 3: jump into this thing. And I think that's the question,
- 6:49Speaker 3: which is how big does the field.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Get totally agree?
- 6:52Speaker 2: You know, that's the thing right now, it's I mean again,
- 6:56Speaker 2: let me pull I'll pull this backup so beeable and
- 6:58Speaker 2: see you. But like on the credit said, when we
- 7:00Speaker 2: did this a week ago, you know, there's like fifty
- 7:03Speaker 2: two people who have two percent of the vote chances
- 7:06Speaker 2: or not. Look at this, this is it doesn't take
- 7:08Speaker 2: long to get to one percent. I can fit it
- 7:10Speaker 2: all on one screen.
- 7:11Speaker 3: It's remarkable to me, candidates that that these prediction markets
- 7:16Speaker 3: leave off. I mean, it's clear they're not you know,
- 7:19Speaker 3: it's they're just using attention economy.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll just scroll down. I mean, I Vanka Trump
- 7:25Speaker 1: is is the seventh most likely, Like you know what
- 7:27Speaker 1: I mean.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Look, I I will tell you I wish I could
- 7:30Speaker 3: just vote somebody with the last name of Trump running,
- 7:32Speaker 3: you know, whether it's Laura Trump or the Trump Eric.
- 7:36Speaker 3: I think that is not a zero percent chance that,
- 7:39Speaker 3: but that the financial windfall that the Trump family has received,
- 7:43Speaker 3: if they want to keep a good thing going, maybe
- 7:45Speaker 3: putting a Trump in the in the keeping a Trump
- 7:46Speaker 3: in the White House, it's going to be their mindset.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Agree.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I think that. I think there's going to be more
- 7:51Speaker 3: to that line of thinking than people realize.
- 7:53Speaker 2: And I think the to the extent Donald Trump has
- 7:57Speaker 2: ever been loyal to anything it's two blood relatives, and
- 8:00Speaker 2: the idea of him handing off this money machine, in
- 8:02Speaker 2: this thing that he clearly built and takes full credit
- 8:05Speaker 2: for to someone who's not a Trump.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it's not consistent with this personality, doesn't Someway, a
- 8:12Speaker 4: long time major national figure in the Democratic Party, believes
- 8:18Speaker 4: that Avanka's going to be the heir apparent.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I've always assumed that Eric was the business guy, and
- 8:27Speaker 2: he would be the business guy, and that Don Junior
- 8:30Speaker 2: was the guy who has got dipped a tone of
- 8:32Speaker 2: politics and liked it, and I'd kind of written off
- 8:34Speaker 2: of Vanka because, like, I just assumed Jared and her
- 8:37Speaker 2: were just like collecting money, do you know what I mean?
- 8:39Speaker 1: But like, who the hell? I mean, honestly, who the
- 8:41Speaker 1: hell knows?
- 8:42Speaker 2: But I do want to get to your point because
- 8:43Speaker 2: I think it's really important, which is how big is
- 8:47Speaker 2: the field going to get?
- 8:48Speaker 1: So Vance?
- 8:49Speaker 2: I mean, again, it's twenty twenty six, but we're assuming
- 8:53Speaker 2: Vance is going to run. Let's just go down some
- 8:56Speaker 2: of these other folks. Rubio, where do you land on that?
- 8:59Speaker 2: And what does it look like? Does he take a
- 9:02Speaker 2: VP gig from Vance who is ten years his junior
- 9:05Speaker 2: or does he run.
- 9:07Speaker 3: In his own I feel like you know him better
- 9:09Speaker 3: than nobody says no to a VP slot. Okay, you know,
- 9:13Speaker 3: I think you and I both know that that's a
- 9:14Speaker 3: rule everybody always thinks. So who wants to be to
- 9:17Speaker 3: give me a freaking break? You know everybody? You know,
- 9:20Speaker 3: everybody says they don't want the job. Nobody turns down
- 9:23Speaker 3: the job.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So every that's like the Josh Shapiro storyline. Oh he
- 9:26Speaker 1: wasn't interested in the job. Sure, he wasn't interested in
- 9:28Speaker 1: they he wasn't going to get it.
- 9:31Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. So you know, Rubio, I'm fascinated. Let's step
- 9:40Speaker 3: back here at minute of Rubio. I've been ups just
- 9:42Speaker 3: about it. I love you know. One of my favorite things,
- 9:45Speaker 3: as people know, is the stories that don't happen, and
- 9:48Speaker 3: sometimes what doesn't happen we ought to pay more attention to. Yep,
- 9:52Speaker 3: we're in the middle of a debacle of a war
- 9:56Speaker 3: right with iron Right, this has just been this has
- 9:58Speaker 3: been as about his this is you know, this is
- 10:01Speaker 3: starting to look more like Vietnam in its bungle, and
- 10:05Speaker 3: it's poor leadership, right, you know, Pete hag Seth is McNamara.
- 10:09Speaker 3: I guess he's got the head of hair for it.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Other than that, you know, But isn't it remarkable how
- 10:16Speaker 3: the secretary of State is nowhere to be found on
- 10:19Speaker 3: all the Venezuela one. He's like, what, that's a jend?
- 10:24Speaker 3: And the fact that Vance has somehow gotten himself tied
- 10:29Speaker 3: to this debacle of a decision Rubio this, I don't
- 10:35Speaker 3: know whether we should give him credit, whether he needs
- 10:38Speaker 3: to thank somebody. The fact that he is somehow kept
- 10:43Speaker 3: his hands as clean as they are on this Iran
- 10:46Speaker 3: debacle that the Trump administration has gone about on it
- 10:51Speaker 3: is striking to me. Now. The question I'm trying to
- 10:53Speaker 3: figure out is how's he pulled that off? Has he
- 10:55Speaker 3: pulled that off? Because he was a skeptic from the
- 10:58Speaker 3: beginning and he basically said, look, you guys, go do this.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I'm over here. Is he just away from it because
- 11:06Speaker 3: maybe they all said, well, the closer Rubio is, the
- 11:09Speaker 3: more they'll think neo cons are about this. I mean,
- 11:11Speaker 3: it is funny to me that it's Trump and Advance
- 11:13Speaker 3: that have gotten himself into a quagmire and the hawk
- 11:17Speaker 3: in the in the team, Rubio couldn't be further away
- 11:21Speaker 3: from this mess now.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And the one person we know who was a critic
- 11:25Speaker 1: of it in Advance or at least questioning of it,
- 11:27Speaker 1: well noting it, which is Vance. So you know, I think.
- 11:35Speaker 3: That's that's the part of this that I don't know
- 11:38Speaker 3: for sure. I do think Marco wants to look he's
- 11:40Speaker 3: still never earned money, made tripe of money that everybody
- 11:44Speaker 3: around him has. Yep. And you know, for people that
- 11:48Speaker 3: are close to or that used to be close to him,
- 11:50Speaker 3: this is a weird circle. There was times where you know,
- 11:54Speaker 3: we had a lot of it. There were plenty of
- 11:56Speaker 3: end diagrams that overlap less So and the Trump era
- 11:58Speaker 3: for a variety of reasons. And this is true. You know,
- 12:01Speaker 3: he's probably lost a few friends in Miami and stuff.
- 12:05Speaker 3: But what you hear is, I think the likelihood that
- 12:10Speaker 3: he runs is lower than people think.
- 12:12Speaker 1: I think he I think, you know, he's kind of interesting.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I think he'd like to go earn some money. And
- 12:16Speaker 3: I think at this point, you know, you know, if
- 12:22Speaker 3: Vance doesn't run, then he runs. But Advance runs, right,
- 12:26Speaker 3: I think he's got I don't think he is a
- 12:28Speaker 3: part of this at all. I think he takes a break,
- 12:34Speaker 3: sees if he can be the one guy in the
- 12:36Speaker 3: in the from the Trump era that isn't ostracized by
- 12:39Speaker 3: corporate America and things. He seems to be somehow scandal free,
- 12:45Speaker 3: Like he's not. I've yet to hear about a kickback
- 12:48Speaker 3: to a Rubio family member or a kickback here, you know.
- 12:51Speaker 1: No, he's pretty squeaky clean. So at least as far as.
- 12:55Speaker 3: We should say, yeah, you know so, or at least
- 13:00Speaker 3: maybe he's the tallest little guy meaning I know everybody
- 13:03Speaker 3: is so corrupt. The fact that he's not blatantly doing
- 13:06Speaker 3: pay for play while it seems like everybody else in
- 13:09Speaker 3: that cabinet is. So that's my you know, if you
- 13:14Speaker 3: were to ask me what's the most likely result, I say,
- 13:17Speaker 3: he does it, run it Joes and makes money and
- 13:19Speaker 3: Mike come second, run again in thirty two if the Republicans,
- 13:24Speaker 3: you know, Vance loses in twenty eight.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He's in his early to mid fifties and plenty of time.
- 13:29Speaker 3: He and I are about the same age. Yeah, he's
- 13:30Speaker 3: senty four, right, and so he's got I think plenty
- 13:34Speaker 3: of I think he's got a sort of another ten
- 13:37Speaker 3: years in his political career, right realistically, and he's more
- 13:44Speaker 3: likely to be a bridge of a party that is
- 13:46Speaker 3: fractured by twenty thirty two, he might be more effective
- 13:50Speaker 3: as a bridge. Yep, you know it's funny. I think
- 13:55Speaker 3: in an alternative universe he's running for governor this cycle. Yeah,
- 14:01Speaker 3: I could see a way to prepare to run for president.
- 14:03Speaker 3: Run for president totally and rabo. I'd like to see
- 14:08Speaker 3: how that would have worked out.
- 14:10Speaker 2: So all right, let's follow this logic down, because I
- 14:12Speaker 2: actually think the Rubio making money thing makes a ton
- 14:15Speaker 2: of sense. I always tell people, remember, these are humans,
- 14:18Speaker 2: so they're driven by many of the same before.
- 14:21Speaker 3: He went back and and got talked back into running
- 14:24Speaker 3: in sixteen, that's exactly right.
- 14:27Speaker 2: So vance in, Well, let's put a we'll put a
- 14:30Speaker 2: pin in someone with the last name Trump being in
- 14:34Speaker 2: who else Chuck? And and maybe not even individuals as
- 14:38Speaker 2: much as kind of like what they represent. I've always
- 14:41Speaker 2: argued that there'll be some kind of younger senator who's
- 14:45Speaker 2: like Trump B two point zero, like a you know,
- 14:48Speaker 2: a Hawley or a cot or.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Someone like that. But then I don't know who else.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I mean, there's we haven't mentioned any women. I mean,
- 14:55Speaker 1: Sarah Huckaby Sanders is governor of Bark and some martial
- 14:58Speaker 1: Blacks probably going to be.
- 14:59Speaker 3: If you were to me, who's most likely to be
- 15:01Speaker 3: on the national ticket. Sara Huckaby Sanders is number one.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Interesting as a as a VP for Vance, I think
- 15:07Speaker 1: so too. I think she's she.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Her numbers, it's Arkansas. Being a Republican's relatively easy to
- 15:15Speaker 2: have good numbers, but numbers are pretty good. She's young,
- 15:18Speaker 2: you know, so it would be that kind of like
- 15:19Speaker 2: ninety two doubling down on young, kind of generational different
- 15:23Speaker 2: like all millennial.
- 15:24Speaker 1: Yeah, you know that.
- 15:25Speaker 3: I'm more likely to think Vance would think that way. Yeah,
- 15:28Speaker 3: big time time, more than most.
- 15:32Speaker 1: I'm just trying to think, like, once we get beyond Vance,
- 15:35Speaker 1: and I do buy your logic on Ruby. I mean
- 15:37Speaker 1: I wouldn't be stunned if he ran, but like, I
- 15:39Speaker 1: do buy your thinking there's not that well, look, Glenn youngkin,
- 15:44Speaker 1: I mean, I trying to get.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Buns too, But I don't know, you know, I don't know,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I don't know if there's I don't see the path,
- 15:53Speaker 3: and I don't think he's going to waste his money Okay,
- 15:56Speaker 3: his own money. Yeah, and he'd have to self fund
- 15:58Speaker 3: that a little bit to to sort of find the
- 16:00Speaker 3: path I think you might have a Spencer Cox or
- 16:05Speaker 3: somebody like them to sort of to be the to
- 16:09Speaker 3: be the John Huntsman, John Kasik candidate of the Hey,
- 16:12Speaker 3: we used to be the compassionate conservatives over here, you know,
- 16:16Speaker 3: let's let's have empathy in the conservative movement. Candidate that
- 16:20Speaker 3: that is sort of right. Huntsman was that Kasick? Was
- 16:24Speaker 3: that Bush? Was that George D. Bush. Spencer Cox strikes
- 16:28Speaker 3: me as sort of the next generation of this mm hmm.
- 16:32Speaker 1: I like him. He's done some interesting things. He is
- 16:34Speaker 1: still a conservative. He is not ant. I don't think
- 16:36Speaker 1: you can. Let me clear one thing up.
- 16:38Speaker 2: My belief is you cannot be positioned as anti or
- 16:42Speaker 2: even close to never Trump and have any chance. I
- 16:44Speaker 2: don't think Spencer Cox is exactly do you.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Buy that like that?
- 16:47Speaker 3: I don't know if he's he's right on the edge.
- 16:50Speaker 1: He's yeah.
- 16:53Speaker 3: I don't know, me neither. I think what it would
- 16:57Speaker 3: take to keep Trump in the fold would turn off
- 16:59Speaker 3: the very people that might be interested in him. So
- 17:01Speaker 3: he's you know. But the point is is that I
- 17:04Speaker 3: think somebody from that wing of the party. I mean,
- 17:08Speaker 3: I'll tell you a guy who I think who I'm
- 17:10Speaker 3: if he wins reelection, I think you're going.
- 17:12Speaker 1: To say, and I'm told it's out west right.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Yes, it's Joe Lombardo totally is if he wins re election.
- 17:21Speaker 3: In this environment, Joe Lombardo should be a guy the
- 17:25Speaker 3: party in theory should be doubling down on. Here's a
- 17:28Speaker 3: guy who doesn't strike me as as a cultural conservative
- 17:32Speaker 3: in the old traditional model. You know, he's kind of
- 17:35Speaker 3: a law and order guy, but he's not a you know,
- 17:38Speaker 3: he's not a he's not overly trumpy. He's just sort
- 17:41Speaker 3: of a realistic person. I don't know how to put it.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Yeh know, he's just sort of a.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Very pragmatic conservative, kind of a throwback in that way.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Right, He's going to work with a democratic legislature, so
- 17:55Speaker 3: he's got a very sort of bipartisan track record. Look,
- 18:01Speaker 3: if you told me he loses reelection, it wouldn't surprise me.
- 18:03Speaker 3: In this environment, it's going to be very hard to
- 18:05Speaker 3: win as a Republican, you know, especially, I mean, you
- 18:08Speaker 3: want to talk about an economy that has been harmed
- 18:10Speaker 3: by the war with Canada. The Las Vegas economy has
- 18:14Speaker 3: been harmed greatly by this by this war with Canada.
- 18:18Speaker 3: So you know, it's I don't. There's a part of
- 18:23Speaker 3: me that wonders, are we underestimating that? Like we're all
- 18:27Speaker 3: looking at this at the contours. You know, we always
- 18:30Speaker 3: underestimate waves, right, They're always when they happen, they're always
- 18:34Speaker 3: bigger than you expect. He can't, I'll be. But if
- 18:38Speaker 3: he survives in this environment, I think Lombardo's a I
- 18:44Speaker 3: think he should be where the party is looking for
- 18:46Speaker 3: its next generation of leaders. I'm not saying they will,
- 18:50Speaker 3: I'm just saying that's totally where i'd be looking. So
- 18:53Speaker 3: he interests me. You know, John Kennedy has all has
- 18:58Speaker 3: enjoyed his book tour and certain enjoys the attention. I
- 19:02Speaker 3: think Kennedy runs. I think he falls on his face,
- 19:05Speaker 3: But I think that doesn't make him mean that he
- 19:08Speaker 3: won't be a lot of fun to cover. He might
- 19:10Speaker 3: be the you know, the guy with all the great quotes.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Fritz Holling was that guy. He went nowhere in eighty four.
- 19:15Speaker 3: You know, he's basically reminds me of the Fritz Hollings
- 19:17Speaker 3: of the Republican Party.
- 19:18Speaker 1: It's a great copy. But yeah, but we'll be entertaining.
- 19:35Speaker 3: But I think he does run. I think somebody like
- 19:37Speaker 3: him runs maybe you know, maybe.
- 19:39Speaker 1: It just feels very you get beyond Vance and if
- 19:42Speaker 1: you do take Rubio out, now you're like, I mean, well.
- 19:45Speaker 3: That's the question, you know, because I think a guy
- 19:48Speaker 3: like Jim Banks is ambitious, but can he run against Vance?
- 19:52Speaker 3: You know? I think Banks would love to run for president?
- 19:55Speaker 3: But can he? You know, what's the opening is it?
- 19:57Speaker 3: I now, if you go against you know, I don't know, right, it.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Can't be anti Trump probably for someone like that. So
- 20:05Speaker 2: it's like, okay, well then, like Obama, the greatest thing
- 20:08Speaker 2: that ever happened to Obama was Hillary voted for the
- 20:10Speaker 2: use of force resolution in Rock right, like because it
- 20:13Speaker 2: was like, well, I have to run even though it
- 20:15Speaker 2: seems like he had an inn right, And for Banks,
- 20:18Speaker 2: it's like, okay, what's your in that isn't Donald Trump
- 20:20Speaker 2: screwed things up?
- 20:22Speaker 3: I think if uh, I think Dave McCormick is somebody
- 20:26Speaker 3: I'm I think would like I.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Heard that this weekend In fact yep.
- 20:30Speaker 3: And obviously you know his wife is is just a
- 20:34Speaker 3: very good insider. I don't know how to describe it.
- 20:37Speaker 1: She's a lobbyist for Meta, but Sheadena is very good
- 20:40Speaker 1: he's a place, not a bad way.
- 20:43Speaker 3: She just she works it, and she knows people and
- 20:46Speaker 3: all of those things. I can't imagine a Texan doesn't
- 20:51Speaker 3: run right kind of a it's got to be cruised.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I think he seems to me like he's in I
- 20:58Speaker 1: don't know. Again, I don't don't know what the rationale
- 21:02Speaker 1: is necessary.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Why I am it's funny that you say there's rationales involvement.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Now, yeah, you're right, I'm overthinking it.
- 21:10Speaker 3: I think I think Brian Kemp didn't run for senate.
- 21:14Speaker 3: You know. The line I got is the reason he
- 21:16Speaker 3: said no to the Senate race was he wants to
- 21:19Speaker 3: look at the presidential Now. I don't know if he's
- 21:22Speaker 3: got the charisma for this, to be honest, you know,
- 21:27Speaker 3: I think I always say this, Brian kepts my kind
- 21:29Speaker 3: of politician, but that doesn't always work, like, you know,
- 21:31Speaker 3: the quiet, behind the scenes kind of guy. It's not
- 21:34Speaker 3: necessarily what the public wants. So yeah, but I like
- 21:38Speaker 3: his style. It's it's sort of and what do the voters.
- 21:42Speaker 3: That's going to be another thing. What is the attitude
- 21:45Speaker 3: of the Republican primary voters if it's a wife out
- 21:48Speaker 3: and I know.
- 21:48Speaker 1: And Trump is in the thing you leuse the House
- 21:50Speaker 1: and Senate majority. Trump's in the thirties and mid twenty
- 21:53Speaker 1: twenty seven, you.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Know, the let's move on from Trump constituency and do
- 21:58Speaker 3: you have to be Trump friendly to be that to
- 22:03Speaker 3: be that candidate? Right? I mean trying to think of
- 22:05Speaker 3: the of a of a of a similar situation where
- 22:09Speaker 3: you had a I mean, I guess McCain. You know,
- 22:12Speaker 3: McCain getting the nomination in eight was was a bit
- 22:16Speaker 3: of a party rebuking Bush. Right, he was the most
- 22:20Speaker 3: as far as Republicans were concerned, in a weird way,
- 22:23Speaker 3: who's the most Who's the opposite of Bush that we
- 22:26Speaker 3: could find.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Because of two thousand? Yeah, of course, I mean the premier?
- 22:29Speaker 3: So who's that guy or gal? In this case, it
- 22:34Speaker 3: might be Nikki Haley. I mean, it's possible that we
- 22:37Speaker 3: are underrating her.
- 22:38Speaker 1: I was just going to ask about her highly. But
- 22:42Speaker 1: but you're right, it depends on where the party is
- 22:45Speaker 1: in a year.
- 22:46Speaker 3: She strikes me that if you told me, look, you
- 22:49Speaker 3: want a Republican who those that don't like Trump will
- 22:53Speaker 3: believe you're not trumpy, And I think that that's fair
- 22:56Speaker 3: with her, and those that are trumpy will say, well,
- 22:59Speaker 3: you were in his administration. You showed you're willing to
- 23:02Speaker 3: work with all wings of the party. That's certainly how
- 23:05Speaker 3: I would sell her to Republican donors, like, hey, here's
- 23:08Speaker 3: somebody who's a credible Trump critic and at the same time,
- 23:13Speaker 3: isn't just doing it for clicks, because look, she was,
- 23:17Speaker 3: you know, in the administration.
- 23:18Speaker 1: It's not Adam Chinsinger. You know what I mean, It's.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Not She's not Adam Kingson. No, right, Like, that's the point.
- 23:25Speaker 3: I mean, that's the now the two Republican voters leaves
- 23:28Speaker 3: that around and endorse Democrats, right, Okay, yep? Which might
- 23:33Speaker 3: be the line right for for that I would guess yes.
- 23:40Speaker 3: By the way, do I think a Chris Snunu might
- 23:42Speaker 3: jump in?
- 23:43Speaker 1: I think he wants to run. I don't.
- 23:45Speaker 3: He's in that category of the wing of the party
- 23:48Speaker 3: that wants to say, hey, we can be the we
- 23:50Speaker 3: can be compassionate. Look a silver here, you know, right,
- 23:54Speaker 3: whether that's you know that he could be this year's
- 23:56Speaker 3: Kasik or this year's Christie or this year's you know,
- 23:58Speaker 3: the empathy the wing of the party.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Let me ask you about one name we haven't talked
- 24:03Speaker 2: about and I really don't know how to make odds
- 24:06Speaker 2: on this or think about it, which.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Is Tucker Cross Tucker, Yeah, Like, what do you make
- 24:10Speaker 1: of that? He look, he put out a ten point
- 24:13Speaker 1: plan on how to turn America around. It feels to
- 24:17Speaker 1: me like maybe a vanity slash self promotional independent bid
- 24:23Speaker 1: that if it gets legs, he'd be excited about, but
- 24:25Speaker 1: if it doesn't get legs, he's fine with it. Seems
- 24:28Speaker 1: weird that he would run in the Republican Party at
- 24:31Speaker 1: this point, but like, what do you make I mean,
- 24:34Speaker 1: I knew him when he wrote for Comatica magazine, which
- 24:37Speaker 1: is a long time ago.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Im media comparison. People are going to make us to Buchanan.
- 24:41Speaker 3: You know. The thing with Buchanan is he had he
- 24:43Speaker 3: had an ideology and he also he had a narrative
- 24:48Speaker 3: where he also had a through line. He was part
- 24:50Speaker 3: of a wing of the party that existed that it
- 24:53Speaker 3: always existed and had been sort of you know, in
- 24:57Speaker 3: the minority status, but there's always been that isolationist faction.
- 25:01Speaker 3: And you know, he had he had been he grew.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Out of the Goldwater era. I mean here that part
- 25:06Speaker 2: of the party has existed. Pat kind of caught it
- 25:09Speaker 2: lighting in a bottle, at.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Least for a little while.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Tucker is just intellectually dishonest. Right, He has no ideology.
- 25:15Speaker 3: If you actually track him over the years, he's a contrariant.
- 25:19Speaker 3: His ideology has always been to be that's well, put
- 25:21Speaker 3: yep and I and whatever the whatever, wherever the thing going.
- 25:25Speaker 3: He wants to be able to be the guy that says,
- 25:28Speaker 3: I went the other way. But over time, you know,
- 25:32Speaker 3: that makes you kind of look ridiculous, right, Like if
- 25:35Speaker 3: if he doesn't, there isn't a through line to him, right,
- 25:38Speaker 3: you canon, you know what Buchanan wrote, right, wrote the
- 25:42Speaker 3: last five years, and what Buchanan wrote in the seventies,
- 25:44Speaker 3: you know, you know you can see it. It's related, right,
- 25:48Speaker 3: what Tucker wrote in the nineties versus what Tucker is
- 25:51Speaker 3: doing today is feels unrelated.
- 25:54Speaker 1: So I think it would get attention. I just don't
- 25:57Speaker 1: know if it would.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Be what the reason it is? Is it him? Is
- 26:00Speaker 3: it Marjorie Taylor Green? Is it Thomas Brassey? Like right,
- 26:03Speaker 3: it sounds like it's someone that there is this sort
- 26:07Speaker 3: of this sort of I don't know what you call him.
- 26:12Speaker 3: The Maga Truthers are the America firsters, I don't know.
- 26:16Speaker 3: I mean, is Tucker fit in America first? With the
- 26:18Speaker 3: Russia stuff? Like Marjorie Taylor.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Green and Massy are definitely kind of mean an America first,
- 26:25Speaker 2: kind of like, you know, we more isolationists, make America better,
- 26:28Speaker 2: don't worry about other countries.
- 26:30Speaker 1: But then like so is jd Vance. Like, if we're
- 26:33Speaker 1: being honest about what Jade Vance actually believes.
- 26:36Speaker 3: We have one other category of people we've left out,
- 26:38Speaker 3: and we got to get to that in a minute
- 26:40Speaker 3: besides Tucker. But look, I think here's my issue with Tucker.
- 26:46Speaker 3: I view everything he does through the prism of the
- 26:48Speaker 3: attention economy. I don't think he does anything that is organic.
- 26:52Speaker 3: I don't think he does anything that is just him.
- 26:55Speaker 3: I think he is angry at being ostracized from wherever
- 27:01Speaker 3: he's been ostracized from lately. You know, at one time
- 27:04Speaker 3: it was being ostracized from the world of of NBC
- 27:08Speaker 3: or of Weekly Standard, that it was to be ostracized
- 27:11Speaker 3: from Trump and Fox. And you know, he's always got
- 27:14Speaker 3: a chip on his shoulder and he's always so any
- 27:16Speaker 3: candidacy of his to me is is a is all
- 27:20Speaker 3: about him. So I don't think it fits in a
- 27:22Speaker 3: category other than himself. It doesn't, and so I don't
- 27:26Speaker 3: I don't know where. I don't buy legs. I just
- 27:29Speaker 3: don't think it gets legs.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I don't think he's got.
- 27:31Speaker 3: The constituency he in his own head thinks he has.
- 27:34Speaker 1: It's interesting people I think who are smart and who aren't,
- 27:37Speaker 1: who are never Trumpers now. But I do think new
- 27:39Speaker 1: the conservative movement, like Jonathan ve last of the Bulwark,
- 27:42Speaker 1: Matt Lewis, who's now at noticed perspectives like they're like Tucker, like.
- 27:47Speaker 2: They're all in because it's like, well, he's just such
- 27:49Speaker 2: a big personality's stage, he's going to be good.
- 27:53Speaker 3: JVL live online, I live online huge. It's like this
- 27:58Speaker 3: fish now down in Florida. Yes he got nothing, but
- 28:03Speaker 3: got like ten right, he's like, wow, look at how
- 28:06Speaker 3: he did in the college towns. Give me a break.
- 28:09Speaker 3: There was like no vote in the college towns of
- 28:10Speaker 3: the Republican Pride, the massive.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Because vote all the college towns Donald six.
- 28:14Speaker 3: You know, it doesn't anything, but it's you know, if
- 28:18Speaker 3: you think James fishback, look call me and Nive. I
- 28:22Speaker 3: don't think that wig of the party is very big.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I think it's as relevant as I also think Hassan
- 28:28Speaker 3: Piker is an overrated clown show too, Like I don't
- 28:32Speaker 3: I think that literally in the real world that dude
- 28:35Speaker 3: has no name, I du suit has no name, I
- 28:39Speaker 3: d And I think Vinman is instructive there too, which
- 28:42Speaker 3: is like everyone assumed he's going to be the nominee
- 28:44Speaker 3: because he raised.
- 28:44Speaker 1: A lot of money and people online talk about him.
- 28:46Speaker 3: He wasn't a real person. Yeah, so I do think
- 28:50Speaker 3: you said there's another category. It is the category of
- 28:53Speaker 3: Trump cabinet members who all think they're going to be president.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Oh right, Doug Bergham still wants to be president.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Ye, Pete hagg set.
- 29:01Speaker 3: For sure that that talk about somebody who's who's the
- 29:05Speaker 3: Peter principle applies to. And then some uh, Howard Lutnik
- 29:11Speaker 3: apparently has gotten oh my gosh.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah, the old the old Commerce secretary to White House pipeline.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Sure him and Herbert Hoover, Right, you can follow doesn't
- 29:20Speaker 3: happen much. Yeah, And when Hoover's your being, your your
- 29:24Speaker 3: your comp is not great, I think that you will
- 29:29Speaker 3: get there's also sort of you know, there's this R
- 29:32Speaker 3: Junior Chuck. Well, there's this whole class of people that
- 29:37Speaker 3: work in Trump's orbit that think, my god, Trump became president.
- 29:41Speaker 1: You know I can do this. I'm this.
- 29:44Speaker 3: This is Lutnick, right, this is Lutnik who probably used
- 29:48Speaker 3: to think Trump was a clown, and now it's like,
- 29:51Speaker 3: oh god, I've got to get into his good graces.
- 29:53Speaker 3: So he buys his way in in all these different ways, right,
- 29:55Speaker 3: you know. And and he's not alone. Right, there's this
- 29:59Speaker 3: whole Please, Doug Bergham told me he'd never do business
- 30:02Speaker 3: with Donald Trump, and then he couldn't wait to write
- 30:04Speaker 3: checks to of course all this, right, they you know,
- 30:06Speaker 3: nobody wants to do business Donald Trump until he's in
- 30:08Speaker 3: charge of something.
- 30:10Speaker 1: He's right about that, by the way. That's all the
- 30:12Speaker 1: cynicism about human nature.
- 30:14Speaker 2: He's totally been backed up by this, which is like,
- 30:16Speaker 2: they'll come to me if they need me, and which
- 30:18Speaker 2: he's been right about.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think you will see somebody
- 30:23Speaker 3: like multiple of them tried. Now. They may not get past,
- 30:27Speaker 3: you know, the starting line, and maybe Trump tells him
- 30:30Speaker 3: no and don't do it, or I'll come after you
- 30:33Speaker 3: or something like that. I don't know, but I think
- 30:36Speaker 3: you'll see that. The other category of people is oh
- 30:41Speaker 3: the Dave Portnoy, the Data white.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Right, some the Mark Cuban of the Republican side, someone
- 30:50Speaker 1: like that.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Cuban said he'd run as a Republican now now because
- 30:53Speaker 3: of the DSA, So you never know. But it's somebody
- 30:56Speaker 3: of that ill right that might run as the outsider
- 31:01Speaker 3: conservative who you know, you know, we'll see. I just
- 31:08Speaker 3: here's what I guess where I come back to. I
- 31:10Speaker 3: think Vance is very weak. I think Vance has got
- 31:15Speaker 3: very few ski natural skills as a candidate. That doesn't
- 31:18Speaker 3: mean he won't mean maybe he doesn't get better. I
- 31:21Speaker 3: think he's eminently beatable if it's a level playing field.
- 31:25Speaker 3: We just don't know how level the playing.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Field is going to be. Yeah, and I would I
- 31:28Speaker 1: point out to people all the time. Vance is the
- 31:31Speaker 1: chair of the Republican National Committee's fundraising operation, so he's
- 31:34Speaker 1: going now. Money is not determined.
- 31:36Speaker 2: If if it was Alex Vinman would be the republic the
- 31:38Speaker 2: Democratics Fenumbie in Florida. But he will make a lot
- 31:42Speaker 2: of connections over these four year period that he will
- 31:45Speaker 2: put to use if and when he runs.
- 31:49Speaker 1: But I agree with you.
- 31:49Speaker 2: You know another name we didn't even mention, Chuck and
- 31:51Speaker 2: I think he probably will run is rand Paul. I mean,
- 31:54Speaker 2: I don't know where he fixed in all of that,
- 31:56Speaker 2: but he's like, if I had to list the most
- 31:58Speaker 2: likely i'd be, I'd say Van Ted Cruz, ran Paul.
- 32:01Speaker 1: You know what I mean.
- 32:01Speaker 3: I think they're going to run. I have to tell you,
- 32:04Speaker 3: I hope ran Paul runs. I think he brings issues
- 32:09Speaker 3: and he brings a debate that is necessary. I don't
- 32:12Speaker 3: There's some things I vehemently I think. I think what
- 32:16Speaker 3: he's done with Fauci is.
- 32:18Speaker 1: Terrible, awful.
- 32:19Speaker 3: I don't like any on other issues of like the
- 32:23Speaker 3: surveillance state. You know, you're glad that ran Paul's in
- 32:26Speaker 3: the United States Senate because that dude gives a shit
- 32:28Speaker 3: about he does state and he.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Actually has some level of print. You know what it
- 32:32Speaker 2: made me think of is when you were talking about
- 32:34Speaker 2: the principal thing, It's like, what's the through line of
- 32:37Speaker 2: appeal of a Pat Buchanan, Bernie Sanders Ron Paul. Certainly
- 32:43Speaker 2: Ideologically they don't agree. It's just you can find old
- 32:46Speaker 2: clips of them from like nineteen eighty seven saying basically
- 32:49Speaker 2: the same thing that they're saying now.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Well, you know it's funny with Rand and maybe you
- 32:52Speaker 3: want to talk about a guy we're probably totally underrating
- 32:55Speaker 3: and who should be getting much better in the prediction markets.
- 32:59Speaker 3: You know, Mark Murray had me convinced, and he and
- 33:02Speaker 3: I were both in the cab in twenty fifteen. We
- 33:06Speaker 3: had we were operating on we think you know, we
- 33:08Speaker 3: invested more time into Paul than anybody in the too.
- 33:11Speaker 1: I think I had him second or third in my
- 33:13Speaker 1: line days because it just made sense.
- 33:15Speaker 3: We thought Paul, and in fact, before Trump showed up, Paul.
- 33:20Speaker 3: You know, it's funny, Paul's support disappeared first when Trump
- 33:24Speaker 3: got traction absolutely right, because Paul was the outsider before
- 33:28Speaker 3: Trump got in, and then Trump became the outside agitator,
- 33:31Speaker 3: making Rand Paul look like part of the establishment, right.
- 33:34Speaker 1: You know, which is crazy, but which is crazy.
- 33:36Speaker 3: But like you know, that's for Rand Paul's problem. He
- 33:40Speaker 3: looked a corporate compared to Trump, right, of all people.
- 33:43Speaker 3: You know, the more we talked this through, Rand Paul
- 33:48Speaker 3: is probably the one guy that could get a Vance supporter,
- 33:51Speaker 3: a Rubio supporter, and a Tucker supporter going okay, you know, look,
- 33:57Speaker 3: his foreign policy's wacky. I'm Paul, and I don't you
- 34:01Speaker 3: know this has been a but he could run against
- 34:04Speaker 3: the Iran war very credibly and not come across anti
- 34:07Speaker 3: Trump while doing it.
- 34:09Speaker 2: It's just an interesting he's interesting candidate. That's I just
- 34:13Speaker 2: and I think he gets a little looked over because
- 34:16Speaker 2: people like us. I've said, people used to ask me
- 34:18Speaker 2: all the time pre you Trump twenty fifteen, who's like
- 34:21Speaker 2: a little bit of a dark horse kiepan Eye, And
- 34:23Speaker 2: I would always say ran Paul because.
- 34:25Speaker 1: He has a lane right outsidery.
- 34:28Speaker 3: He's been talking about his real problem. He doesn't ever smile.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he's not likable and he's not like likable personally likable.
- 34:38Speaker 2: He's he's a little bit of a dick, I mean
- 34:41Speaker 2: like but but he's not always wrong.
- 34:43Speaker 3: But the you know, it's funny. It's like if you
- 34:47Speaker 3: can if you can get him to open up, there
- 34:51Speaker 3: is a personality in there. There is a sort of
- 34:55Speaker 3: interesting like just cultural stuff. His music tastes stuff like.
- 34:58Speaker 2: This totally, but he really he comes across he comes
- 35:03Speaker 2: across as very unlikable in the rest and he.
- 35:06Speaker 3: Has a he's got to tear down that wall if
- 35:08Speaker 3: he if he's going to get like vance is a
- 35:13Speaker 3: very in a room, knows how to work a room.
- 35:15Speaker 3: He's a likable guy, no matter what you think of him,
- 35:19Speaker 3: and he he has an ability just like Trump does.
- 35:21Speaker 3: He does have a better ability to work a room.
- 35:24Speaker 3: But boy, the more I think about it, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 3: because Paul can be the guy who's not part of
- 35:31Speaker 3: the establishment, who credibly criticizes Trump on his two great
- 35:37Speaker 3: failures of this administration yep, tariffs and Iran yep, and
- 35:41Speaker 3: Paul was against them from the get go, and sit
- 35:44Speaker 3: here and call him an never Trumper.
- 35:46Speaker 2: And I was gonna say and not opposed to it
- 35:48Speaker 2: because Donald Trump was full of great He may be
- 35:50Speaker 2: principally the best position Republican to basically be the anti
- 35:57Speaker 2: Trump candidate without being vehemently personally and ty Trump, which
- 36:03Speaker 2: I wonder to our point about in a year from now,
- 36:07Speaker 2: if Democrats control the House in the Senate and Trump
- 36:11Speaker 2: is in the mid thirties, that might be the right combo,
- 36:16Speaker 2: which is you can say, look, I think Don Trump
- 36:19Speaker 2: was right on a lot of things, but when he
- 36:20Speaker 2: was wrong, he was very wrong, and I opposed him.
- 36:23Speaker 2: You're not Adam Kinsinger, but you're also not Tommy Tubberville.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Well, whatever Trump says is fine, you know what I mean? Like,
- 36:30Speaker 1: it's what a weird spectrum.
- 36:33Speaker 3: At my point when we talk of this through it,
- 36:35Speaker 3: I'm like, huh, it's all happening. Wait a minute, I'm
- 36:38Speaker 3: talking about like Paul might be the best possible vehicle
- 36:42Speaker 3: to stop veis he really?
- 36:44Speaker 1: I'm looking at his odds he is under one percent,
- 36:49Speaker 1: so you you could get it.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Jeez, my Penny Stock baby, he's there with Joe Kent,
- 36:55Speaker 3: Christy Noman, Erica Kirk. I certainly would put a little
- 36:58Speaker 3: I'd put a little rand Paul in my portfolio of
- 37:01Speaker 3: thinking about versus as having a portfolio of of stock.
- 37:05Speaker 2: All Right, I don't want to we spend a bunch
- 37:07Speaker 2: of time, but I do think that is fascinating because
- 37:10Speaker 2: it's going to be what what the party looks like
- 37:13Speaker 2: in a year will determine a lot more about this
- 37:17Speaker 2: and that conversation is interesting, But let's talk about the
- 37:19Speaker 2: guy who We've gone thirty seven minutes without only a
- 37:23Speaker 2: mentioning obliquely Donald Trump. Chuck is now in a trade
- 37:30Speaker 2: war with Canada as of this morning, as.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Excuse me, as a Monday morning.
- 37:35Speaker 2: We're taping Monday afternoon, sholl run Tuesday as of Monday morning, Iran,
- 37:40Speaker 2: he has run Scott Bessen out, the Treasury Secretary, to
- 37:43Speaker 2: say that we're doing it's like economic out project, economic outcasts.
- 37:48Speaker 2: We're going to put even more sanctions on them. Just
- 37:51Speaker 2: one other data point. I want to throw them there.
- 37:52Speaker 2: I'll throw it to you. Reuter's zipsos poll support that
- 37:56Speaker 2: came out Monday, support for the Iran war is the
- 37:58Speaker 2: lowest it has ever been. It's like either in the
- 38:00Speaker 2: high twenties or low thirties. I mean, this looks to
- 38:02Speaker 2: me like an absolute If I'm Susan Collins and we're
- 38:06Speaker 2: talking about Iran, and we're talking about we're now we're
- 38:09Speaker 2: in a fight with Canada and goods are going to
- 38:12Speaker 2: cost more for the near future. I don't think Trump
- 38:15Speaker 2: is a Democratic.
- 38:16Speaker 1: Plant, but man, he's doing a lot of things that
- 38:18Speaker 1: he Democratic would do.
- 38:34Speaker 3: To me. The stomach punch here is what he did
- 38:36Speaker 3: to the cattle.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Ranchers with the beef, with the beef, pounds of imported beef,
- 38:42Speaker 1: no tariffs.
- 38:43Speaker 3: Yeah, let me tell you about the states of Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa,
- 38:48Speaker 3: South Dakota. Like you what you're taking states that are
- 38:52Speaker 3: on the outskirts of being in the battleground to suddenly
- 38:56Speaker 3: making them, you know, more battleground worthy every single day. Now,
- 39:01Speaker 3: Donald Trump is is the single most right now, he
- 39:05Speaker 3: is the single most effective partner here for Chuck Schumern,
- 39:09Speaker 3: not Kems. There's there's I mean, just a nightmare for Collins, right,
- 39:14Speaker 3: a nightmare for Mike Rogers.
- 39:15Speaker 1: Who's gonna say it.
- 39:19Speaker 3: Had, you know, like he just is under you know,
- 39:22Speaker 3: to pick this fight with Canada, which is already created
- 39:28Speaker 3: all sorts of economic problems. I brought up that we
- 39:30Speaker 3: brought up when we're talking Joe Lombardo. I mean, you know, Vegas,
- 39:35Speaker 3: the Vegas economy wasn't They didn't realize how important Canadians
- 39:39Speaker 3: were to their economy until they were all gone. Yep.
- 39:42Speaker 3: And it's been a huge hit. It's been a hit
- 39:44Speaker 3: to Disney World in Orlando as well. So this is
- 39:49Speaker 3: this is not insignificant, you know. I mean, look, Canada's
- 39:53Speaker 3: got the population of California. Imagine if Californian stopped traveling
- 39:56Speaker 3: in the other forty nine states, we have a huge
- 39:59Speaker 3: economic impact.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Stop spending money.
- 40:01Speaker 3: Yeahh you know, starting with Las Vegas, by the way,
- 40:05Speaker 3: that would be the probably the number one hurt spot.
- 40:08Speaker 3: So it is. There's no doubt I think that that
- 40:12Speaker 3: Trump is. I mean, you couldn't have orchestrated a worst August.
- 40:16Speaker 1: No, I totally agree in.
- 40:18Speaker 3: An election here, I don't know how like if you
- 40:21Speaker 3: were in your fever dreams at the d SEC and
- 40:24Speaker 3: the d Triple C. You know, boy, you know it'd
- 40:26Speaker 3: be great. Maybe he could like piss off the cattle
- 40:29Speaker 3: industry like just before Labor Day because maybe we could like,
- 40:33Speaker 3: you know, strike, you know, get lucky in Nebraska and
- 40:35Speaker 3: South Dakota. Oh well, how about that? You know he
- 40:38Speaker 3: did that? Thank you. He really has just made life
- 40:44Speaker 3: a nightmare for every Republican on the ballot in twenty
- 40:47Speaker 3: six And I did. I I had my doubts about
- 40:51Speaker 3: whether he was going to reach Bush territory. That Bush
- 40:54Speaker 3: hit No. Six and oh seven, And you know, I'm
- 40:57Speaker 3: no longer I thought there was a harder floor for
- 41:00Speaker 3: him than there was for w And it turns out
- 41:03Speaker 3: there's not. And the biggest problem Republicans have is remember
- 41:07Speaker 3: Trump's voters. Once they give up on Trump, they don't
- 41:10Speaker 3: show up totally.
- 41:12Speaker 1: Trump people, not the Republican people, right right.
- 41:16Speaker 3: It's a double law.
- 41:17Speaker 1: I just it was amazing. How fast Ashley Hinson, just
- 41:21Speaker 1: as one example, who's the Republican nominee for Senate in Iowa,
- 41:24Speaker 1: how fast she tried to get away from the Trump
- 41:28Speaker 1: meet announcement. I mean, because think about it, Tariff's terrible
- 41:33Speaker 1: for the farm industry in the Midwest. The cost of
- 41:37Speaker 1: diesel because of the straight uform moves way up. You know,
- 41:40Speaker 1: tons of the.
- 41:40Speaker 3: Farm expert state. I guess you can only imagine the country.
- 41:44Speaker 3: I mean, I did the twelve Senate races that are
- 41:46Speaker 3: basically in play. Eleven of the twelve count Canada's number
- 41:49Speaker 3: one or number two as their trading partner.
- 41:52Speaker 2: I didn't know it, but it doesn't surprise me. I mean,
- 41:55Speaker 2: and the b thing I mean, Ashley Hinson's like, I
- 41:57Speaker 2: think this is wrong headed. You even saw like Mike
- 41:59Speaker 2: Rounds from South to Coda come out and say, oh,
- 42:01Speaker 2: I don't know about this, like it he needs to
- 42:04Speaker 2: Browns is in a race.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Yeah right, you know it's funny. I don't know if
- 42:11Speaker 3: people have been sending you this Arkansas pole that's been
- 42:14Speaker 3: floating around.
- 42:15Speaker 1: Have you seen Kelly Schaffner up free on Tom Cotton?
- 42:18Speaker 3: Now it's a crappy methodology they just it's just text
- 42:23Speaker 3: message based polling. And we know those over index young yes,
- 42:27Speaker 3: and then.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Every young takes to be democratic in Arkansas.
- 42:30Speaker 3: So and it's an August pole, I mean it is.
- 42:32Speaker 3: It was designed the pole. I'm not saying that they
- 42:35Speaker 3: made up the numbers. I'm not saying that, but they
- 42:38Speaker 3: certainly put made sure to conduct the pole in both
- 42:41Speaker 3: the timing and in such a way to basically maximize
- 42:44Speaker 3: the performance of the Democratic candidate. Yep. But when you
- 42:49Speaker 3: look at the campaign she's running, she's running on ag issues.
- 42:52Speaker 3: She's talking about farm bankruptcies that have been taking place
- 42:55Speaker 3: in Arkansas. And you're Tom Cotton, And I've been thinking
- 42:58Speaker 3: about this right. First of all, no greater champion of
- 43:02Speaker 3: a military answer to Iran than Tom Cotton.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Ye, huge hawk.
- 43:07Speaker 3: And now I'm sure if you're Cotton, you would say, well,
- 43:10Speaker 3: I wouldn't have run it this way. I wouldn't have
- 43:12Speaker 3: had any I wouldn't have done this, this, and this,
- 43:16Speaker 3: which I believe, like do I think that if Tom
- 43:19Speaker 3: Cotton were at the Defense Department, we'd we'd wait till
- 43:22Speaker 3: now to find out we had missing munitions and ship
- 43:24Speaker 3: like that. He's done.
- 43:25Speaker 1: But he's a thousand times.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Whatever you think of Tom kNN, he's a thousand times
- 43:28Speaker 2: we're qualified to do that job than Pete heggsacky and.
- 43:31Speaker 3: That it's and somehow I think even he says is
- 43:35Speaker 3: even less qualified than that ratio that you.
- 43:39Speaker 1: So.
- 43:39Speaker 3: But you know, if you've told me Tom Cotton only
- 43:43Speaker 3: won by six or seven, I.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Was going to say that's a single digit race, would
- 43:45Speaker 2: be my guest. I'm just looking back to see what
- 43:47Speaker 2: he won by last time.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Because you have sitting here in this environment where Maga
- 43:51Speaker 3: stays home, Democrats are fired up, and nobody likes this
- 43:56Speaker 3: Iran war like, especially in rural America. I mean, you know,
- 44:02Speaker 3: Donald Trump has declared war in rural America. I don't
- 44:04Speaker 3: understand how rural America hasn't seen that yet. He has
- 44:08Speaker 3: made the AAG industry harder, to their lives harder, not easy, harder.
- 44:14Speaker 3: That's an attack on rural America. He's now got us
- 44:17Speaker 3: into another forever war, some sort of quagmire. And we
- 44:21Speaker 3: know that there's an out outsized amount of younger rural
- 44:27Speaker 3: kids in are all volunteer Army than there are rural kids.
- 44:32Speaker 3: He has made life harder, and never mind the price
- 44:35Speaker 3: of gas right. He has made life harder for rural
- 44:38Speaker 3: America more so than any president. I can think of
- 44:42Speaker 3: et centy.
- 44:43Speaker 1: The Canada thing, and the three hundred thousand pounds of
- 44:47Speaker 1: imported beef not being taxed. I really did think to myself,
- 44:52Speaker 1: like it is hard for me to imagine Democrats to
- 44:55Speaker 1: your point being like, okay, you can program Donald Trump
- 44:59Speaker 1: to do three things this August, like those would be
- 45:02Speaker 1: on the list given the races that we're talking about,
- 45:06Speaker 1: like college.
- 45:08Speaker 3: I thought he was a Russian plan. It turns out, yeah,
- 45:10Speaker 3: party plan. It just it was they're playing a real
- 45:13Speaker 3: long game here to destroy.
- 45:14Speaker 1: It's really long game, but it is. It is just
- 45:17Speaker 1: wild to me.
- 45:18Speaker 2: And it's like you said, we haven't even talked about
- 45:19Speaker 2: gas is still on average over four dollars. There appears
- 45:23Speaker 2: to be no movement with the war in Iran. I mean,
- 45:26Speaker 2: I it doesn't. We're literally just locked in this. They're
- 45:30Speaker 2: not talking to us, we're not talking to them. And meanwhile,
- 45:34Speaker 2: Donald shrump.
- 45:34Speaker 1: I went through his speech that he gave at Darlene
- 45:37Speaker 1: Graham's event on Friday. You know, he says I should
- 45:41Speaker 1: be getting one hundred percent rating on the economy. I
- 45:44Speaker 1: mean It's just like, I don't expect the President the
- 45:48Speaker 1: United States to say, hey, look man, the economy is
- 45:51Speaker 1: really in the shitter, you know, like I get it.
- 45:53Speaker 2: I get you're gonna have to say, like, look we
- 45:55Speaker 2: where I know a lot of people are hurting. We've
- 45:57Speaker 2: got policies in place that I feel good about, and
- 45:59Speaker 2: I I need a Republican Congress blah blah blah blah blah.
- 46:02Speaker 2: But you can't keep saying I deserve an aid plus
- 46:05Speaker 2: for I've handled the economy affordabilities and made up democratic
- 46:08Speaker 2: word like it's not just the policies, it's the words,
- 46:11Speaker 2: like you can cut if you're a Democratic ad maker.
- 46:15Speaker 2: Him saying I deserve one hundred percent on the economy,
- 46:19Speaker 2: he's crazy.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Here's what I think I've I'm taking away from when
- 46:28Speaker 3: we've seen his numbers get lowered again. It is August.
- 46:31Speaker 3: I'd like to see what happens when people start tuning in.
- 46:34Speaker 3: But I don't think that gets better when more.
- 46:36Speaker 1: I can't imagine it does. I mean, what's the positive story, Chuck.
- 46:40Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean, look all the money you know,
- 46:44Speaker 3: and I will tell you this, I think the Republicans
- 46:47Speaker 3: have already wasted their financial advantage if you haven't taken
- 46:51Speaker 3: advantage of your financial advantage in July and August. So
- 46:55Speaker 3: Bill Clinton, Bob Dold ninety six, right, money, right, it's
- 47:00Speaker 3: holding it for September. It doesn't It doesn't have near
- 47:03Speaker 3: the impact because everybody else is hoarded till September. So
- 47:07Speaker 3: just because you're running more three am ads than your opponents, right,
- 47:11Speaker 3: doesn't mean you're you're running more.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Totally agree.
- 47:15Speaker 3: I think they had an opportunity to bury, you know,
- 47:20Speaker 3: to really make life difficult for quite a few candidates.
- 47:23Speaker 3: But you know, you know, take Tall Rico, you know, Maga,
- 47:28Speaker 3: the Mega super packs. If they weren't going to come
- 47:33Speaker 3: to Paxton's aid right away, then they were going to
- 47:35Speaker 3: have no help, and they didn't do it. Dido in Georgia.
- 47:39Speaker 3: You know, if you look at the mistakes, they had
- 47:42Speaker 3: this financial advantage, and to me, the time where they
- 47:45Speaker 3: could have used it was between April one and September one,
- 47:51Speaker 3: and I don't see evidence that they've used it very effectively.
- 47:54Speaker 3: And to me, all of these everything that they had
- 47:57Speaker 3: going for them has been pissed away or it's sitting
- 48:00Speaker 3: in account just benefiting Donald Trump.
- 48:02Speaker 2: I guess yeah, And I wonder how much of that
- 48:05Speaker 2: was a you do it, no, we'll do it.
- 48:07Speaker 1: You do it like the Republican committees in MAGA, inc.
- 48:10Speaker 1: The Super Pac and of course the Superpack. I mean,
- 48:12Speaker 1: you and I have talked about this. I'm convinced that
- 48:15Speaker 1: they don't spend it down nearly as much as they could.
- 48:18Speaker 1: He doesn't do anything for other people. He never has. No.
- 48:22Speaker 3: I mean, Cherry did a rally for Graham because he's
- 48:25Speaker 3: embarrassed that he's about to Okay, so got to keep losing.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Let's talk about that, and let me make a plug.
- 48:30Speaker 1: If you've made it this far, trust us, you are
- 48:33Speaker 1: going to want to watch Tuesday night starting at six
- 48:36Speaker 1: point thirty or seven.
- 48:37Speaker 2: Poles close at seven. We might come round seven when
- 48:41Speaker 2: poles close, Chucks, It'll be me, Chuck, the Decision DESKATEQ
- 48:45Speaker 2: folks including Jeffrey Skelley. We will have live results from
- 48:48Speaker 2: the Darlene Graham Ralph Norman runoff. We will call the
- 48:52Speaker 2: race through Decision Desk HQ. Chuck's YouTube, my YouTube, Chucks Twitter,
- 48:57Speaker 2: my Twitter, you can find it a lot. DDHQ find
- 48:59Speaker 2: it places. But Chuck, let's talk about that because Trump
- 49:04Speaker 2: not only went to Myrtle Beach in real life, which
- 49:07Speaker 2: he does not. You've made the point he does not
- 49:09Speaker 2: really travel the country as much anymore. When we've talked
- 49:11Speaker 2: about his age and kind of what's different. He's doing
- 49:14Speaker 2: a tell he's calling in Monday night to support her.
- 49:19Speaker 2: He said in this Myrtle rally, like you got to
- 49:22Speaker 2: vote for Darlene Graham because it's a vote for me.
- 49:25Speaker 1: I wanted her to run.
- 49:28Speaker 2: This is why he's so invested, right, because he basically
- 49:31Speaker 2: sees it as it'll be a judgment on him if
- 49:33Speaker 2: she loses.
- 49:35Speaker 3: Right. I think he's decided that, which is certainly I
- 49:38Speaker 3: think what her campaign is hoping for. Well, I'll tell
- 49:41Speaker 3: you the decision to you know, not only did he
- 49:44Speaker 3: do a rally, now they're doing this teletown hall.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Yep.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I'm sure their tracking looks very similar to the tracking
- 49:50Speaker 3: that I've seen, you know, which indicates that this is
- 49:55Speaker 3: a dead heat.
- 49:56Speaker 1: Is close.
- 49:57Speaker 3: And I think you'd rather be the person who been
- 50:00Speaker 3: on the ballot a bunch of times in their lives
- 50:02Speaker 3: versus the person who hasn't. Yep.
- 50:04Speaker 2: And I think you'd rather be the person who was
- 50:06Speaker 2: not the one who said they don't understand national security.
- 50:10Speaker 2: And that's in a debate, the one big debate that
- 50:12Speaker 2: you have. I mean, we were on the air last
- 50:15Speaker 2: Tuesday covering Florida. Whyom we in Alaska when it happened,
- 50:19Speaker 2: But you know, I watched it afterward and I thought, well,
- 50:21Speaker 2: this is an absolute and total disaster. Because he gets
- 50:24Speaker 2: to this is like Biden. People always say like, well,
- 50:26Speaker 2: why do gaffs matter? Why don't they? I always think
- 50:28Speaker 2: gafs matter when it reinforces something people already think or think,
- 50:32Speaker 2: they think about it. Can't it With Biden was he's
- 50:35Speaker 2: too old not of it. The first ten minutes of
- 50:36Speaker 2: a baby looks like he saw on another planet. With
- 50:39Speaker 2: Darlene Graham, it's like, well, she's never run for anything before,
- 50:42Speaker 2: so does she know anything? And she says, I don't
- 50:46Speaker 2: really know anything about that. It's like, I think I'd
- 50:49Speaker 2: rather be Ralph Norman today, which is kind of crazy
- 50:52Speaker 2: because she should win.
- 50:56Speaker 3: I don't know about this. By the way, Scale has
- 51:00Speaker 3: a terrific stack in the preview, and I hadn't. I hadn't, Frank,
- 51:07Speaker 3: I just had not seen it slice this way that
- 51:09Speaker 3: appointed senators and it look there's been they basically since
- 51:13Speaker 3: the direct election of senators, so just over one hundred
- 51:16Speaker 3: years since the direct election of centers appointed senators who
- 51:22Speaker 3: have been challenged for the nomination, and most of them
- 51:25Speaker 3: are most of them don't get to clear there if
- 51:27Speaker 3: you're appointed or somehow they they only had a survival
- 51:33Speaker 3: rate of about forty four percent in the South versus
- 51:37Speaker 3: eighty one percent in the rest of the country. You know,
- 51:42Speaker 3: part of it is I think, you know, it goes
- 51:45Speaker 3: back and this goes back to the old days when
- 51:47Speaker 3: it was you know, the South has always been a
- 51:49Speaker 3: one party yep entity, you know, versus change parties, right,
- 51:53Speaker 3: you know, so, and there's usually factions that are always
- 51:56Speaker 3: fighting within that party, you know, some sort of left
- 52:00Speaker 3: center faction, right or an urban rural faction. It was there,
- 52:04Speaker 3: you know, Sam Nunn, I think defeated a sitting senator
- 52:07Speaker 3: appointed senator.
- 52:08Speaker 1: I think, I think, I mean, I always think of
- 52:10Speaker 1: I always think of Luther Strange losing right.
- 52:13Speaker 2: That's a more recent one, but it's a classic classic
- 52:15Speaker 2: example of kind of like the base versus the establishment.
- 52:19Speaker 3: And it is it is so anyway, it was a
- 52:22Speaker 3: terrific stat I hadn't thought about it until I thought
- 52:25Speaker 3: about it, and he like, you know, like, yeah, I
- 52:27Speaker 3: can actually come up with a whole bunch of examples,
- 52:29Speaker 3: and they all are the Southern states where this happened.
- 52:32Speaker 3: It didn't it didn't happen as much in the Midwest, Northeast,
- 52:36Speaker 3: or the West. So yeah, I think and you know,
- 52:41Speaker 3: South Carolina doesn't always like to be told how to vote.
- 52:46Speaker 2: I mean, it's i'm, I'm I think Trump thinks this
- 52:51Speaker 2: is a big deal given his level of involvement.
- 52:54Speaker 1: I think he wants to reassert dominance. I mean, he
- 52:57Speaker 1: posted over the weekend about how his endorsement record is
- 53:00Speaker 1: not being calculated, right, he.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Clearly, I just tell you, this is what I like,
- 53:05Speaker 3: I got. I would look at this from if you're
- 53:07Speaker 3: Ashley Hnson. I think she's a good sort of avatar
- 53:11Speaker 3: for this. If you're Ashley Hinson and you need the
- 53:14Speaker 3: MAGA vote to show up, and you see Darlene Graham
- 53:19Speaker 3: loses and the only explanation is Trump couldn't get his
- 53:24Speaker 3: voters out for her. Now, well, Trump tried to say, oh,
- 53:29Speaker 3: this is Lindsay's fault and some weird ways she might
- 53:32Speaker 3: I think, don't rule anything out right. Well, Lindsay had
- 53:35Speaker 3: alienated the party, my people. You know this, whatever all
- 53:38Speaker 3: this other, she.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Made a mistake in the debate. I can't control that.
- 53:41Speaker 3: You know. Essentially Trump is is this is an interesting test.
- 53:46Speaker 3: Trump is basically saying, I'm on the ballot, you owe
- 53:50Speaker 3: this to me. Can he motivate Trump voters in South
- 53:53Speaker 3: Carolina to do what he says? And if she wins,
- 53:57Speaker 3: you know, that probably keeps Ashley Hinson on the It
- 54:00Speaker 3: probably keeps John Houston on the D.
- 54:04Speaker 1: I think that's right.
- 54:05Speaker 3: Who both need a good maggot turnout. If he can't
- 54:09Speaker 3: produce it, I think you will start to see more
- 54:13Speaker 3: Republicans feel more comfortable running away from Trump in some
- 54:16Speaker 3: form or another. So I do think this matters. I
- 54:20Speaker 3: think my point is this Trump's right to worry about
- 54:22Speaker 3: this because Trump has always been he is. He is
- 54:27Speaker 3: the embodiment of the Wizard of Oz, the man behind
- 54:30Speaker 3: the curtain, the illusion of power. The illusion of power
- 54:34Speaker 3: is everything. The minute it's gone right, the minute you
- 54:41Speaker 3: looks like, oh, the Emperor has no clothes, yep, who
- 54:46Speaker 3: is that man behind the curtain? Whatever metaphor you want
- 54:48Speaker 3: to jump in on, I think exposed could expose itself.
- 54:51Speaker 3: I mean I think it's that big. So my point
- 54:54Speaker 3: is is that this is one of those weird ways
- 54:56Speaker 3: that I agree with Trump's urgency in this yeah, because
- 55:00Speaker 3: I do think, you know, I think he's already a
- 55:03Speaker 3: lame duct but the rest of the Republican Party will
- 55:06Speaker 3: start treating him as one if Darlene Graham loses Tuesday.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I was thinking of it in terms of, at this
- 55:13Speaker 2: point where he is in polling, Susan Collins doesn't want
- 55:19Speaker 2: him in that state, right. I can't imagine she She.
- 55:24Speaker 1: Apparently wasn't even at the JD Vance.
- 55:28Speaker 3: On Monday, which, by the way, I kind of think
- 55:31Speaker 3: it just shows you, you know, her problem. Her biggest
- 55:36Speaker 3: weakness is the perception she's weak. Yeah, And I think
- 55:39Speaker 3: it's weak that she doesn't have the stomach.
- 55:43Speaker 1: Just go there. You're a Republican, he's a Republican vice president.
- 55:46Speaker 3: Almost like Wow, she's trying to pretend she doesn't like
- 55:49Speaker 3: you know, I think it's disingenuous. I think she's I
- 55:52Speaker 3: think that stuff's a mistake, and I think she thinks
- 55:55Speaker 3: it's Look, whatever photograph you think they're gonna get that
- 56:00Speaker 3: somehow hurt you please, You've you've you know, you've already
- 56:04Speaker 3: got a Kavanaugh issue. It seems to me this was
- 56:08Speaker 3: a I found it to be a foolish move.
- 56:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna ask you yes or no on the chuck
- 56:14Speaker 2: as of today. As of today, if Donald Trump calls
- 56:17Speaker 2: up Ashley Henson says I want to do a rally
- 56:19Speaker 2: for you September fifteenth, does Ashley Henson say yes or no?
- 56:22Speaker 3: Yes?
- 56:23Speaker 1: Does John Houston say yes or no?
- 56:25Speaker 3: Yes? They need him. I'm sorry, is.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Dan Sullivan He's not going to Alaska? But does Dan
- 56:30Speaker 1: Sullivan say yes or no?
- 56:32Speaker 3: I think they'd almost say yes. I think, including of voters,
- 56:36Speaker 3: I do you.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Because you need the base, even even if it's worth
- 56:39Speaker 1: the risk of alienating the middle, because without the base.
- 56:43Speaker 3: You can't win right of the midterm.
- 56:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's probably right.
- 56:47Speaker 3: It's a turnout fight.
- 56:48Speaker 1: It's not a it's not a like one hundred percent
- 56:51Speaker 1: yes decision, but it's probably a yes.
- 56:52Speaker 3: Now you asked September fifteenth. October fifteenth, I might say,
- 56:58Speaker 3: or for sure it might have a different day. October fifteenth,
- 57:02Speaker 3: warn Iran gas prices right, like, there's extenuating circumstances. If
- 57:06Speaker 3: I'm Ashley Hinson and farmers are you know, up in
- 57:10Speaker 3: arms about the cost of b for you know, or
- 57:13Speaker 3: the cost of diesel. I'm not sure you bring Donald
- 57:15Speaker 3: Trump in two weeks before the election, when early voting
- 57:18Speaker 3: has started to.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Remind them of the thing that you don't like. He
- 57:21Speaker 2: might be better as kind of like, hey, we're all Republican.
- 57:24Speaker 3: The only surrogate I would want to fire a Republican
- 57:26Speaker 3: I think is Marco And you really can't do that
- 57:29Speaker 3: as secretary of State. Now you can't administration.
- 57:32Speaker 1: Now.
- 57:32Speaker 2: None of the rest I think help you in any
- 57:34Speaker 2: meaningful Maybe Vance, I don't know, Van Vance. It's it's
- 57:37Speaker 2: to your point, like Vance is such a cipher in
- 57:40Speaker 2: that like he kind of was. I thought he was
- 57:44Speaker 2: going to lose the primary to Bernie Moreno, who's now
- 57:46Speaker 2: a senator. But betther he's gonna lose a primary to
- 57:48Speaker 2: Bernie Moreno without Trump. Trump endorses him and wins primary,
- 57:51Speaker 2: he wins the general election, and now all of a sudden,
- 57:53Speaker 2: he's the Vice President of the United States, and I'm like,
- 57:54Speaker 2: I have no sense of I.
- 57:56Speaker 1: Thought he was good in the VP debate against walls.
- 57:59Speaker 3: Walls are very this is why, like, weirdly, I know,
- 58:02Speaker 3: like I think they're the same. Yeah, they have this
- 58:05Speaker 3: gay They kind of got to the vice presidency despite
- 58:08Speaker 3: failing as candidates.
- 58:10Speaker 1: It's very interesting.
- 58:11Speaker 3: And to me, you know, when you look at vice
- 58:15Speaker 3: presidents who become president versus the vice presidents who don't
- 58:19Speaker 3: success in your own political career, is usually the indicator characteristic.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Yes, it's just I just he is. It's I can't
- 58:30Speaker 1: remember this far out a front runner who I just
- 58:34Speaker 1: me personally felt like I have no real sense of
- 58:37Speaker 1: him because the data points are so limited. There really
- 58:41Speaker 1: aren't many.
- 58:42Speaker 3: Well, I think part of his you know. One of
- 58:45Speaker 3: the things I do is I always assigned. I've done
- 58:47Speaker 3: this for three years now. I signed J. D. Vance's
- 58:50Speaker 3: memo book, the book.
- 58:52Speaker 1: He'll BILLI Elogygy.
- 58:55Speaker 3: To my class as one of their books that they
- 58:58Speaker 3: need that they can pick from. They don't have to
- 59:00Speaker 3: read it. But I have a few memoirs in there.
- 59:02Speaker 3: I do Advance, I do a Pelosi, I do a
- 59:05Speaker 3: Kamala Harris's book, and stuff, you know, And it's always
- 59:10Speaker 3: remarkable to me. The students who you know, think about it.
- 59:13Speaker 3: They're in nineteen twenty, twenty one, twenty two, so you know,
- 59:16Speaker 3: in sixteen, you know, they weren't paying attention to Jada
- 59:19Speaker 3: vance Right and they read this book and they're like, huh,
- 59:22Speaker 3: and they just assume it's not the same person too,
- 59:26Speaker 3: you know, right, Like the guy who wrote that book
- 59:28Speaker 3: can't be the guy that they think they know now.
- 59:32Speaker 3: And that's the thing. Like about the most generous way
- 59:35Speaker 3: I could describe jd. Vance Right now would be he's
- 59:39Speaker 3: still evolving as a politician.
- 59:41Speaker 1: Was really charitable, I mean, and I I could tell
- 59:45Speaker 1: you shapeshifter based on circumstance, seems a lot more few
- 59:50Speaker 1: I will.
- 59:51Speaker 3: We know, he's what forty forty one, right, Yeah, he's
- 59:54Speaker 3: super young. When I was in my late thirties early forties.
- 59:57Speaker 3: There probably are some things I believe then that I
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: don't believe now. The point is is that I actually
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: don't think he's ready to be president. I really don't.
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: I don't think and I think the speed, I don't
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: think he's done enough in life. What's he He's sort
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: of like it's like he has this checklist of things
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: you're supposed to have to be president, serve in the military, right,
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: successful this, but he's never really done anything, Like what
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: is he really done in tech? Other than collect a
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: salary from Peter Teel, like, is there a story about
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: him coming up with this great idea that did the
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: X Y or Z if so I've missed it.
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: I know people who worked with him in that period
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: who very much like him and think he is smart,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: but who feel as though the let's put it in air.
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: Quotes the JD vance now doesn't bear a ton of
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: resemblance to that person.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Well, I think it gets to the whole who is
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: he right?
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: Because he's just a huge problem.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: And I think that that for somebody who's supposedly a
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: front runner and we literally know zero about this.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: That's my point. You're totally right.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: I think he's a lot weaker than folks realize.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: All right, let's end there. I hesitate to do this, Chuck,
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: because I feel like this has been I'm in a
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: good mood at the end of this. And I don't
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: know if we want to talk about the Nats who
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: just got swept by the Marlins. They are two and
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: fifteen in their last two road trips they went from
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I would argue, whether you care about the Nationals like
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: we do, are you not one of the really good,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: feel good stories of young manager, young GM young stars
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: fun to watch high scoring offense.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: Two.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: I didn't turn the TV on on Sunday because I
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: didn't want to watch us get swept by the Marlins,
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: which we did six to two. I've written about this,
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: I've talked to you about it.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: You know, I know you and your son have a
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: similar relationship. You know, my fourteen year old and I
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: watch virtually every game together. Now we don't watch every inning,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: but we watch him most of it. I mean, he
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: wants to watch the end when I'm ready to turn
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: it off, and it's just kind of a bummer.
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: Yeah. You know, we were seventy one and ninety one
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: the last two seasons. Yep, we are currently sixty one
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: and seventy.
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I think we're eight or nine hunder.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: So it's right around there, sixty and we are about
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: the way through the season one twenty is games one thirty.
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: Gotta win eleven games out of our next thirty one.
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: I believe to be better than next year, to be
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: better than a two years, which a week ago I
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: would have said was a given. And you know, look,
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: we had a really successful first hundred games, Yes we did.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: It was a great story, fun to watch.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: It reminds me a lot actually of our first season,
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: you know, where we had a really good hundred games,
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: you know, and then kind of like we were like,
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: we're there, and so we didn't belong in the playoffs,
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: but it was cool to be in that race for
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: as long as we were in that race, right, But
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: I'm now starting to look I I got a little
- 1:03:21Speaker 3: whiny on our text chain, right with with the corners
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: and and and with the socialized delight, And I was
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: thinking to myself, Okay, at the beginning of this season,
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: what would we have called progress? Yep, and obviously a
- 1:03:38Speaker 3: better record, Kate Cavali becoming a real, a real top
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: of the line starting pitcher. So look, Kate Kvally is
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: the easily now the number one sort of success of
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: the year. He has been outstanding, and it looks like
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: he's finally gonna you know, so as my son said,
- 1:03:57Speaker 3: so he goes, I look forward to trading him.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: Please don't trade him, you know, I know, I hope not.
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: I hope he's you know, I think it was my
- 1:04:03Speaker 3: son trying to be snarky.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: But please let your son be wrong.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: But I have to tell you, I really think that
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: this team, you know that this GM and manager really
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: screwed up cj Abrams, and I don't like it, and
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: I think it's a huge fumble, not a small one.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: And the c j Abrams screw up overshadows all the
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: good for me for this year. What they have done
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: to C. J Abrams is is really just just.
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: Just just stupid, just going to make him.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: It's going to make it hard to resign him, period,
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: full stop, and it might make it impossible to resign him.
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: It sounds like they've never wanted to resign him. They
- 1:04:46Speaker 3: keep trying to trade him, They keep and I just
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: think the mismanagement of him, and they've now declined, they've
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: devalued him of course to be able to trade him
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: because we're not even considering him a shortstop anymore now
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: he's in the second base market, which automatically it's it
- 1:05:03Speaker 3: is really one of the.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Starting in the National League All Stars, right, not a
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: good player, a great season.
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: We were still in contention, and hey, what would be
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: best for the playoffs is if we had a little
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: bit of better defense at shortstop, and you were I
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: think that's a different conversation if we're like trying to
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: beat the Dodgers and the Brewers and this would have been.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: You know, we got to prove our defense this way. Yep,
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: that's one conversation. We're not this the improving CJ at
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: s you know, you know, getting a couple of more
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: outs of game from your shortstop is not going to
- 1:05:40Speaker 3: be the difference between the Nationals making it to the playoffs,
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: frankly and not making it to the playoffs. That is
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: not why we're not a playoff team. Trading away our
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: third and fourth best hitter, our first best hitter being heard,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: and screwing with the brain of our second that's how
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: you screw up a team. Correct. And they've done it.
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: They've done it, and it Oh, by the way, everything
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: they traded for so far no good will.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: Dion is the only good piece so far, left handed reliever.
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: Everybody else, you know, the guys with the big arms
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: roll in the miners. The guy who got from the
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: Red Sox, who was coming back is now in the
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: sixty day DL, which makes me fair I L or
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: whatever they call it. Now that makes me think that's
- 1:06:17Speaker 2: Tommy John And with Abrams, how do you not have it?
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: So?
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: I don't care how many conversations you have to have
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: with them, have it until he's like, Okay, I'm all
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: right with this, And if he doesn't say it, then
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: you don't announce it. You cannot say we're gonna move
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: him a second and then have his agent say he's
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: not happy about that?
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Like, how do you mishandle that no one is asking
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: the manager every day?
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: Hey are you guys moving?
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: C j abras like they totally it's a totally self inflicted.
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: What the old guy in me is thinking on this?
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: Okay, and I'm gonna I know Will You're channeling Willbon.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: This feels like immaturity, God like an obsession with stats.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: Make this mistake. He just doesn't. Mike does not make
- 1:07:04Speaker 3: this mistake of how to handle a player. Okay, these
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: guys are really good at coming up with a game
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: plan on how to attack a picture game to game.
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: I love it. I think this is the big coaching
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: difference that I see. Okay, it is they have an
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: approach at the plate that's unique and different for every
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: one of their hitters, for every picture that they face,
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: in every situation. And it appears guys like Jacob Young
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: in particular, really.
