On a fateful night in 1956, the Italian liner SS Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish ship Stockholm, capsizing and sinking just fifty miles off Nantucket—claiming fifty-one lives while rescuing over sixteen hundred. Now legendary among divers as one of the most perilous wrecks, it’s often called “Mount Everest underwater.” One passenger, songwriter Jerry Stoller, survived the disaster and later learned his songwriting partner Jerry Leiber had penned “Hound Dog,” Elvis’s smash hit originally meant for Big Mama Thornton.
