- 0:07Welcome to another edition of the Justin Tom podcast.
- 0:09I'm your host Justin, We've got will with us again.
- 0:12How you doing buddy? I'm on the.
- 0:14Streak right now, brother. So look, it's good to be back.
- 0:16So I'm on the streak. Yeah, look, it's got to start
- 0:19new. Yeah, it's good to have you
- 0:21back. We're talking Alabama today and
- 0:24how the mighty have fallen. The Tide.
- 0:29Crimson Tide. You know, like.
- 0:32Starting the season off at 11 AM on September 5th.
- 0:35East versus Carolina. I don't think in the past years
- 0:40I've ever I don't remember Alabama starting at 11 AM.
- 0:44They may, I know they start off I was like there was a stretch
- 0:47where they were doing like the neutral site, big neutral site
- 0:49games, but. Like.
- 0:51But like they, they know do like the first game, home games, the
- 0:54cupcakes, like Youngstown State and whoever.
- 0:59Yeah, I just don't remember them being a 11 AM game in a while.
- 1:06But last episode I told you I would start off with the story
- 1:11and it was the freshman year at LSU.
- 1:14We played Alabama right after the game of the century and then
- 1:18the butt whooping of the century.
- 1:20Yep, that's right. And they came to town and game
- 1:24day came and game that used to do the whole thing on the parade
- 1:30grounds and they were setting up that night and we, my buddy had
- 1:36a tailgate and I lived in a dorm.
- 1:38So I went out there with him and sat out there on in the tailgate
- 1:43was right off of the parade grounds right by right in front
- 1:48of the tower. And we were sitting there.
- 1:50We fried a Turkey and stuff. They had the all the different
- 1:54Batmobiles come out, but I was wearing.
- 1:59So I went to Disney World and I think it was 2008, I was in the
- 2:04eighth grade and they had ESPN Wide World of Sports and I
- 2:09bought this pullover and it was a Sports Center pullover and it
- 2:13would had ESPN. I still have it.
- 2:16It's got ESPN on it and it says Sports Center on the back.
- 2:18It was kind of cold, but it wasn't like it was a Louisiana
- 2:21cold. Well, it wasn't freezing, but it
- 2:25was chilly. So you needed something on.
- 2:28And I was wearing that. And I went to the bathroom at
- 2:31the student union and I walked back and I was wearing that.
- 2:37And I went to sit back at the tailgate.
- 2:41And one of those guys from Sports Center, not Sports
- 2:43Center, ESPN, setting up for game day, came up and started
- 2:48like yelling at me, like, what are you doing?
- 2:51You got to get back to work. And.
- 2:57I was like, dude, I don't, I don't work for ESPNI.
- 3:00Just have this. I got it from Disney World.
- 3:03He was like, that is like top quality.
- 3:06Man, look, that's a good comment.
- 3:07I said. You want to give me a job?
- 3:09Listen, I'll move. Yeah, listen.
- 3:13And that's. What you're really telling?
- 3:15Me, I'll start today. And then I think we can win into
- 3:19that game and we thought we had a big head and we thought we
- 3:21were going to win and they destroyed us.
- 3:24Yeah. And The thing is like, you know,
- 3:26they had like, I remember like that first bamboo game, I was
- 3:29fresh like when we were freshman in college.
- 3:31So this 2012, like I was at home studying for an exam.
- 3:35So that's so I was like foot. I didn't want to see too much.
- 3:38You had one of those professors. Yes, I was studying for the
- 3:43exam. It was like because I was
- 3:45actually, I remember I was in the, in the, in the family room,
- 3:48like I was by myself, like I was at home by myself at that time
- 3:53like that, that night. But.
- 3:56I'm like my parents out, my sister was out and were just
- 3:59like I was. I was filming through like the
- 4:01Oregon and USC game too. So I was, I was largely watching
- 4:05that game. I was trying to distract myself
- 4:06from the bam LSU game because I was also then I was also
- 4:09studying. So like beyond I watch the rest
- 4:12of it later. So I mean we had we had had the
- 4:15lead and they had came back and did and like that game wouldn't
- 4:18drive. I was like, that was really like
- 4:19the turning tide for that series history that we had like a
- 4:23decade straight. Yeah.
- 4:24And it was a lot. One of those things where we
- 4:29played Alabama close for a long time, from 2012 to, I want to
- 4:36say 2014, it was always a close one, especially when we played
- 4:42them at home in 2012 and 2014. Yeah, 2012 and 2014, it was
- 4:48always a close one. In 2014, I believe it was, we
- 4:52were winning going into the last three minutes or something.
- 4:57And we got all. We were all moving up, going
- 5:01towards the gate. We were the storm the field and
- 5:04LSU said put on the thing, if we win, don't storm the field.
- 5:08And that was the knife in the back that we lost that game.
- 5:13Yeah, you know. Yeah, but this was, this was
- 5:15like, like I said before, like it's a historical life sided on
- 5:19our end. Like they have like it's 5827
- 5:22and five. Yeah.
- 5:24But like we moved to justice point, you know, I want to say
- 5:29like it's misleading because it's not you dirty, dirty wins
- 5:32behind, but like just like a lot of those losses were really
- 5:35competitive. Like, and one of the unique
- 5:37thing about this rival, actually, you have the the
- 5:39common ground with the head coaches with Nick Saban.
- 5:43Of course, that's what ran into like the lore of this robbery.
- 5:46You know, just this matchup, you know, just like it's it's one of
- 5:50the more compelling, you know, storylines.
- 5:52You know, it's like TV wise, it's like the leads draw in the
- 5:54conference for many years, but like, but historically it's
- 5:58that's not what it is. So I just want to be in.
- 6:03My opinion Alabama LSU wasn't Alabama LSU until Nick Saban
- 6:08took that job. What it wasn't I mean it because
- 6:11like it shows in the historic results even with even with he
- 6:16when even when he got there. I remember that first year we
- 6:20played him at Death Valley. When he first got the job at LSU
- 6:26and we just beat him, it wasn't like, Oh yeah, we beat Alabama.
- 6:30It was just a we beat him and we moved on.
- 6:35Wasn't until we got to high school, like in 2010 and 2011
- 6:41where it took off. Yeah.
- 6:43Yeah, you know, because like the first, so his first year and Bam
- 6:47was 07, so we were eighth grade. Yeah.
- 6:50That was like a massive game is on its own.
- 6:53I was on our championship year. So like, you know, we went it
- 6:55was it was like 4541, yeah, 40 yeah, 4134.
- 7:00That was a back and forth game, man.
- 7:01Yeah, like just epic game. I was like a massive game.
- 7:05Of course, like the game of the century 2011 championship
- 7:09rematch of a although it didn't live up, but just those like
- 7:13even before, like even in O 5 like this, like I remember Chris
- 7:16Jack, like our kicker head was went one for four with field
- 7:20goals. Yeah, like special teams always
- 7:22played a role in this, in this, right?
- 7:24Especially in the game of Game of the Century, it played a huge
- 7:28role because it was 9 to 6 and it was just straight field
- 7:32goals. Yeah, I think like just the play
- 7:35of the game was like a Eric Reid's intersection.
- 7:38I was about to say Eric Reid. I just like could that change
- 7:42that because like that that great.
- 7:43It was a great play, call it just.
- 7:44And it was a 5050 ball and it was called on the one and it
- 7:49could have depended on who you actually could have been a
- 7:51touchdown. Yeah.
- 7:53And it was a 5050 ball that we got lucky and they gave us.
- 7:56It was a I don't think he was. In, I don't think he was in the
- 7:58play. I don't think that was his
- 8:00assignment if I remember. No, it wasn't.
- 8:02Like he had, he had came over, he had broke on the ball thing
- 8:05because I was that would have lost the game.
- 8:07But. Yeah, I remember that game was
- 8:09so huge. That was our homecoming that
- 8:11year. Man, we moved.
- 8:13Homecoming up to 12:00. Man, like I remember like that
- 8:17day, like the morning, because, you know, I was like our church
- 8:22youth group, you know, we had like, we had visited somewhere
- 8:25early in that morning, early that day.
- 8:27And like, that was on the news as far as like, you know, our
- 8:30homecoming was moved to 3:00 PM. That's when you know, football
- 8:34is serious. Like you don't understand.
- 8:36And look, there's a few games that I remember watching in high
- 8:41school because I watched them on a, there was a meaningful game
- 8:46for a Louisiana team, and I watch him on a projector for
- 8:51that Alabama game. Matt Adler had a, I'm going to
- 8:54take his name out, but we had a part watch party and we were in
- 8:58the backyard and had a whole big old projector and we watched the
- 9:03game and everybody was jumping up and down and having a good
- 9:06time. The next one was when the Saints
- 9:09won the Super Bowl. We were at the gym for our FCA
- 9:14Super Bowl party and when Peyton Manning threw that interception,
- 9:19they sealed the game. That pick six, we were running
- 9:23all over. We hit the cord for the
- 9:26projector and they had these back in the day.
- 9:31They had these little TV's that were about this big.
- 9:36We were sitting on there watching until we got the
- 9:38projector backup, watching the Super Bowl on a screen that was
- 9:42just big and there was 10 of us huddled around.
- 9:44I remember like real quick. I remember like, I, I was in
- 9:47Miami. We was in Fort Lauderdale.
- 9:49Like we was at like this big courtyard at this restaurant.
- 9:53I'm like, it was like they had on this big projector.
- 9:55So we was like waiting several hours before the game just
- 9:58standing up there. Yeah.
- 9:59So it's like when they bro. Like I remember when, when Tracy
- 10:02had to pick 6. But like I was like me, I me.
- 10:05I was like, I started crying when we scored like being a
- 10:09friend of like this this guy, same guy, like he had hugged me,
- 10:12he had hugged me to us. I was crying.
- 10:15Look, we for that one, we hit that projector line, kicked it.
- 10:21The projector went out. We would huddle around that
- 10:23little TV. But before we start talking
- 10:26about Bama again, I just got one thing to say.
- 10:28Archie Manning always wanted his son to throw the game when he
- 10:31touched down pass for the Super Bowl for the Saints.
- 10:34And he did, he did. It was just a pick 6.
- 10:39Hey, it was a touchdown. It was a touchdown, but, but you
- 10:43know, we'll talk more about the Mannings in a future episode.
- 10:48Yes. But you know right now, so I've
- 10:50got Alabama winning against East Carolina.
- 10:53They're part of Kentucky's murderers robe, and they'll beat
- 10:56Kentucky. Yes, that's two and.
- 10:59Up, I think they go 3 and O and it's Florida State.
- 11:03They going to be out for revenge too at home too.
- 11:05Yes, it got embarrassed by him last year.
- 11:07So that's three, you know. Yeah, then South Carolina at
- 11:12night game in Tuscaloosa. Now night games in Tuscaloosa
- 11:14don't really matter because their fans are spoiled, you
- 11:16know, and that reality is starting to hit these fans in
- 11:20the face. You had a legendary coach who
- 11:24required excellence in everything and now you've just
- 11:28got a great to elite coach. You know, there's a difference
- 11:33in the gap in, there's a gap in between legendary and elite, and
- 11:38it's about this wide. Especially there, especially for
- 11:43them. In each half an inch is 1000
- 11:48miles in this thing right here, and it's just the reality of
- 11:52your situation. That's the reality of situation.
- 11:54When you go from a legendary coach retiring to a new coach,
- 11:58you're not going to have the same output.
- 12:00So we said Tuscaloosa and South versus South Carolina, that's a
- 12:04win. That's four and O.
- 12:07Although they struggle with South Carolina in the past.
- 12:11Yeah, these past few years. But since he's in Tuscaloosa,
- 12:13I'll give it to South Carolina. I don't think it matters.
- 12:17Cowbells don't matter in the Mississippi State game.
- 12:21Five and O. So 5 and 6.
- 12:23And because they just got some, they paid somebody in New
- 12:28Orleans to have a make a voodoo ball, a Kirby Smart voodoo doll,
- 12:32a Kirby Smart. And it doesn't matter how big
- 12:35George is up, they always end up dropping against Alabama.
- 12:41So 6 and O. 6 and O Here's where I'm a little bit tempted because
- 12:46this is always a wild gang. I'll give it to Tennessee.
- 12:51With you there. So that's going to be their
- 12:52first drop of the season. So that's make that 6 and.
- 12:55One I'm going to say at Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa, I will give
- 13:01it to Alabama Crimson Tide. 27 and 1.
- 13:05They're going to beat the colt out of Texas A and MI.
- 13:09Hope so actually. That's our job.
- 13:12We're going to beat the Colt out of Texas A&M earlier on and then
- 13:16y'all beat out the remnants. There you go.
- 13:18Look, you get the scratch. Seven in one going into the BI.
- 13:23Yeah, Alabama in Baton Rouge against LSU.
- 13:28Tough. That's tricky.
- 13:29This is tricky. It's a coin toss.
- 13:32As tough you know. I'll put this one as a coin
- 13:34toss. It's too early to call, you
- 13:37know. I'm going to say, gosh, I don't
- 13:41know, man. I'm going to say for this SEC,
- 13:44I'm going to give them the win right now.
- 13:46All right? I'll give them one right now
- 13:47just so I'll be 8:00 and 1:00. Yeah, 8 and one I.
- 13:50Got I got to see, I got to see what they look like.
- 13:52So I'm going to say 8:00 and 1:00.
- 13:54Actually, out there, seven and two, I'll give them the loss.
- 13:58OK, you can give us this. LSU And I'll give it to us.
- 14:01This is toy 'cause you already given Bama the win.
- 14:04I'll give them the loss because that just, it's tough.
- 14:09There's not enough information for me right now because I
- 14:12haven't seen Sam Levitt. If it's a straight defensive
- 14:15game, I'll give our defense the edge.
- 14:18But I want to see what our offensive line and our
- 14:21playmakers on the, you know, look like.
- 14:24But it's like I said, it's a coin toss.
- 14:26Since you're giving them the win, I'm going to give them the
- 14:28loss in Baton Rouge. I will give them the win in
- 14:30Nashville. Me too. 9 and 1 for me.
- 14:34Yeah. So they're 8:00 and 2:00, 9:00
- 14:37and 2:10 and 1:11 and No 10 and 2 is what I got them in and you
- 14:46got them in there 11:00 and 1:00.
- 14:48Correct. Because Auburn might be a tough
- 14:52game and us might have to go in and make a correction to that
- 14:55video the last episode. But I'll give them the win just
- 14:59because it's in Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl.
- 15:01It's a good. That's a weird game again.
- 15:04Yeah. But you've got those rental win
- 15:07at Chattanooga. Yeah, I got them going to level
- 15:121 as of as of the second. Yeah, I'll have them going.
- 15:16Their resistance is in October. Yeah, I'll give them 10:00 and
- 15:212:00 just because LSU is a coin toss in.
- 15:25Yeah. Yeah, but we'll see.
- 15:27Like we said the last episode, it's just the summer.
- 15:30We haven't seen any of these teams play.
- 15:32We're just for Alabama. We're going off of the Alabama
- 15:37name what? You know, we're going off of
- 15:39what Nick Saban built up at Alabama, you know, But I will
- 15:43say this, you know, Caitlin Dubois, your time is coming to
- 15:47a. I was going to bring that up.
- 15:50I said this a week, so you. Got to do something.
- 15:54So like, I want you to coach, you know, I'm sure you're not
- 15:56going to listen to them, but you should.
- 15:58So yours truly doesn't. It got you tending to that.
- 16:03That's your floor basically in year 3.
- 16:08I'm always a guy that gives the coach three years regardless of
- 16:11the sport. You're in a very privileged
- 16:14position because it's like college sports is not equal.
- 16:17You have great resources. You have the priority and the
- 16:19resources there together in Alabama.
- 16:21So, so even in a test of this conference is this always is you
- 16:27still have a well I get, I got you 11/1 at the moment.
- 16:30Yeah. And what you were able to take
- 16:33Washington, that was his old team, right, Washington?
- 16:36That's correct. Didn't they make it to the
- 16:38national championship game? They did.
- 16:40Boston, Michigan. Y'all made it to the national
- 16:43championship game. You've got way.
- 16:45In my opinion it's and I guess it's it's the opinion of
- 16:49probably the whole country. This is why you took the job.
- 16:51You've got some resources at Alabama that puts you forth and
- 16:56puts you so much further. Yeah, a glorified clown in Baton
- 17:01Rouge, depending on who you acts.
- 17:03Took the last bit of remnants and Nick Saban's team and won a
- 17:07national championship at OSU. You know, that's what I'm
- 17:11judging you off of is how quick Nick Les Miles turned around and
- 17:15what you're currently doing at Alabama.
- 17:18I like this, too. Alabama's got the countdown to
- 17:21the first game 45 days, 23 hours, 20 minutes and 24
- 17:27seconds. That's.
- 17:29Right at the time. Of recording, you know, it's
- 17:32tough to look at a coach when they come.
- 17:34Like I said before, the gap between legendary and elite is
- 17:40this, you know, with each half inch in that about 1000 miles I
- 17:49think. Like, you know, he would be much
- 17:51more easier than any other place and people have said that.
- 17:53I think he's really solid. He's a high end coach.
- 17:55Obviously. Yeah, you don't go to hard to go
- 17:57to a championship without being a high end coach, but.
- 18:00I. Think just it.
- 18:02It's just people don't realize it's just so different in elite
- 18:04schools like the the standard is such a whole nother astronomical
- 18:08level. If if if to be honest with you,
- 18:12I'm patient with comes as like if he goes if he were to nine
- 18:16wins they they're going to get rid of Yeah.
- 18:19Look, I'm going to say it just you can be a great coach and
- 18:22elite coach even, and I put those because I'm talking about
- 18:25Brian Kelly. But the difference between any
- 18:29other conference and the SEC is you're not going to come to an
- 18:33SEC school. You got to be able to and just
- 18:36coach football. You got to be able to deal with
- 18:38fan interactions and answer questions.
- 18:43I don't watch enough about Alabama, mainly because I don't
- 18:47feel like being depressed in the past couple years because they
- 18:49would beat up US, beat us up pretty good.
- 18:55You know, I will say this, and the only highlight from Brian
- 18:59Kelly's tenure at LSU for me was when we beat Alabama and I took
- 19:05my mom to the game and we got to storm the field.
- 19:07That was pretty cool. You know that look, that's one
- 19:12of the only highlights I have from watching the Alabama gang
- 19:15at LSU in the past. Finish.
- 19:18Iconic finish, yeah, but. My point being when you have a
- 19:23coach that comes up and he think and he's an elite coach and I
- 19:27like I said, I don't know what, pay attention to what the board
- 19:31does in the media and everything, but I don't hear
- 19:34anything bad said about him. But like Brian Kelly came in, if
- 19:38he wasn't used, he was very arrogant.
- 19:40He wasn't used to people asking intelligent questions about
- 19:44football, you know, and wanting to know this and that and
- 19:50questioning him. He didn't embrace Baton Rouge
- 19:54and he didn't embrace the Southeastern Conference.
- 19:58Yeah, now we'll say this. Alabama fans are spoiled rotten.
- 20:02They're not used to losing. Yeah, you know, I.
- 20:07Think this is the longest time they've gone without winning a
- 20:10national championship or being in the national championship
- 20:13game. Yeah, so.
- 20:14Last appeared so the last one in 2020 lost in 21.
- 20:20Yeah, it's it's been a while. So like so they won in the 70s,
- 20:24I think, but they didn't want to get until 92.
- 20:27They had like a drought like then of course, like that from
- 20:29that point then the from 92 to O 9 that was like a 17 year
- 20:34drought. They've had their droughts, but
- 20:36I mean not like not since the turn of the century.
- 20:38That's the same in there, of course, but yeah.
- 20:41And they've got a drought going on right now.
- 20:43And just to me, you're Alabama. That name carries a lot.
- 20:49But Alabama has the same issue that everybody else is facing,
- 20:56and that is NIL and transfer portal, You know, and to me, I
- 21:05still think it's funny that Auburn and Alabama put out a
- 21:08joint statement against something.
- 21:11So, so classic. Any.
- 21:13Time they put out a joint statement against something, you
- 21:15know it's bad. You know who's Alabama's
- 21:17quarterback this year? That's a big.
- 21:19Question mark. So we don't know.
- 21:20Yet it's still question. Well, well.
- 21:22Well, people, I mean, just, you know, you, you lost out.
- 21:26Ty Simpson. I thought he was going to come
- 21:27back, but. But I, I thought I've been a
- 21:30huge retainer for them. Yeah.

- 22:41coaches, you know, And it's just going to be a wild ride for
- 22:45everybody involved, you know? Yeah, but I've got nothing left
