- 0:00Speaker 1: And we are live at Cafe Or with coach SHORIAMMA
- 0:03Speaker 1: Huskies and Lady Balls coming up on Sunday. That's at
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hartford Radio. Pregame the network begins at eleven thirty. You
- 0:11Speaker 1: can also hear it on the Varsity Network app, the
- 0:13Speaker 1: Varsity Network dot com, and for the second year in
- 0:17Speaker 1: a row, you can listen to games on Sirius XM.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're on channel eighty four on Sunday. We run various channels,
- 0:23Speaker 1: various assignments.
- 0:23Speaker 2: But what is that.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's it's actually their college sports channel, but sometimes are
- 0:30Speaker 1: like two o one two two, but lately we've been
- 0:32Speaker 1: like low eighties channel wise.
- 0:34Speaker 2: Really yep.
- 0:35Speaker 3: All the games are on there.
- 0:36Speaker 2: All the games are on Serious XM. Yep, no kidding,
- 0:39Speaker 2: all of them.
- 0:39Speaker 3: That's good to know.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, they started that I think last year. How about that? Yeah,
- 0:42Speaker 2: that's good.
- 0:43Speaker 3: That's good.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Uh.
- 0:44Speaker 1: One final in by the way, Top twenty five. Vanderbilt
- 0:47Speaker 1: lost for a second straight game, lost to Old Miss
- 0:49Speaker 1: today eighty three seventy five. Cody McMahon is playing really
- 0:52Speaker 1: well for Old Miss. She's the Ohio State trap. Yeah, yeah,
- 0:56Speaker 1: she's played really well.
- 0:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Uh easy fun at a at least shooting wise, had
- 1:03Speaker 1: a tough day, but did other things well, you hinted.
- 1:08Speaker 2: She hundred percent like maybe like a little not feeling well.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah, she didn't. She didn't look one hundred percent. I
- 1:14Speaker 3: think she she had something because she just didn't look good,
- 1:18Speaker 3: and you know sometimes that happens, you know, and she
- 1:22Speaker 3: just missed. She missed a lot of you know, she
- 1:25Speaker 3: missed a lot of easy shots, a lot of open shots.
- 1:28Speaker 3: What are you rationing it out?
- 1:32Speaker 2: So?
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think the uh, the thing about your team is,
- 1:39Speaker 3: you know, you have to be able to go and
- 1:42Speaker 3: try to try to fill in with whatever's going on.
- 1:46Speaker 3: You know, so one kid's not playing well. You know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: we didn't have Blanca and you know we didn't have
- 1:52Speaker 3: Sarah Sarah, So you know, then you get Aasy not
- 1:56Speaker 3: playing you know, great, not shooting the ball great. Now
- 1:59Speaker 3: all of a sudden and you know things things look
- 2:03Speaker 3: a little bit different. But you know, defensively, I think
- 2:07Speaker 3: Asy's gotten so much better, And I think that's uh,
- 2:14Speaker 3: when you start to do other things, you feel like
- 2:17Speaker 3: you can impact the game in more ways other than scoring,
- 2:20Speaker 3: you know, so I'm really happy. I'm really happy with
- 2:22Speaker 3: her about that.
- 2:23Speaker 1: What have you noticed differently her defensively. Yes, she is
- 2:26Speaker 1: taking more chances. That started like in the NCAA Tournament
- 2:28Speaker 1: last season, but she's always seemed to be a good
- 2:31Speaker 1: positional defender. Is it the fact that she's taking more
- 2:35Speaker 1: chances now be a little more aggressive or is there
- 2:37Speaker 1: other parts of it too that see differences.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I mean, I think she's gotten really good at being
- 2:42Speaker 3: in those gaps where somebody thinks they have a lane
- 2:46Speaker 3: to the basket. You know, whether it's Kk's man or
- 2:50Speaker 3: ashes man, it doesn't matter, and it looks like they've
- 2:52Speaker 3: got a lane to the basket. And she's been really
- 2:55Speaker 3: really good at filling those gaps and getting her hands
- 2:58Speaker 3: on on the all. You know, it's it just takes
- 3:05Speaker 3: perfect timing to get it, and she's been really really
- 3:07Speaker 3: good at it. You know that's you're a senior now,
- 3:13Speaker 3: so you know there's nothing that should take you by surprise.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And then you add just the aggressiveness of your guards Defensively,
- 3:22Speaker 1: I mean, we saw it front and center against Xavier
- 3:25Speaker 1: on Wednesday, just the way Ash would go ripping the
- 3:27Speaker 1: ball away in a double team, same with Kaylee. Same
- 3:29Speaker 1: KK does it all the time. But that's got to
- 3:32Speaker 1: take be a nice thing to have take a little
- 3:35Speaker 1: pressure off the interior.
- 3:36Speaker 2: D with what the guards you're doing.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah, we got a bunch of you know, in the
- 3:40Speaker 3: scattering port we said that the savior kids, the big kids,
- 3:46Speaker 3: and even some of the guards, they drive it and
- 3:49Speaker 3: they see a lot of kids doing this now, they
- 3:51Speaker 3: drive it. They get to a certain spot, they spin,
- 3:55Speaker 3: which I don't know, that's that's like a bad move.
- 3:58Speaker 3: You know, you get in the and you know you're
- 4:01Speaker 3: turning your back to the basket and all this other stuff.
- 4:04Speaker 3: And so you know the kids, you know, they watch
- 4:06Speaker 3: some film and and they knew that. And every time
- 4:08Speaker 3: a kid turned last night, they turned right into one
- 4:12Speaker 3: of our guards, taking the ball right out of their hands.
- 4:14Speaker 3: So it was, you know, it was it was really
- 4:18Speaker 3: a good defensive performance by our guards.
- 4:21Speaker 2: It really was. You know.
- 4:25Speaker 3: That's the one I think that's the biggest difference this
- 4:27Speaker 3: year than last year is because of our style of play.
- 4:31Speaker 3: We're much much more aggressive than we were last year
- 4:36Speaker 3: at this time.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Well, the steel's number would certainly indicate.
- 4:39Speaker 3: That, Yeah, yeah, we're taking more chances, were extending the
- 4:43Speaker 3: defense we we didn't last year as much. You know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: it was in Page's contract when she signed her letter
- 4:52Speaker 3: of intent that I'm not picking up full court. So
- 4:57Speaker 3: we you know, we couldn't do.
- 4:58Speaker 2: It, okay.
- 5:03Speaker 3: You know, when you only have certain number of guys,
- 5:06Speaker 3: you can't put him out there and let them play
- 5:08Speaker 3: like that. They won't last that long, you know. So
- 5:11Speaker 3: that Yeah, so now that we have more players, we
- 5:14Speaker 3: can you know, do a lot of things we couldn't
- 5:17Speaker 3: do last year.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Quick updates status on Blanc and Sarah Williams were set
- 5:21Speaker 1: for Sunday.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Uh, Sarah Williams is going to go Blanc up.
- 5:26Speaker 2: No.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Blanca's shoulder acted up the day before yesterday. I guess
- 5:32Speaker 3: it was. So she's it's not like it was in
- 5:38Speaker 3: October or early November when she missed the opening game.
- 5:42Speaker 3: So we'll see her back pretty soon, just not Sunday unfortunately.
- 5:48Speaker 2: Which one is the one that's been taped up? The
- 5:49Speaker 2: right one left? Yeah, the right one, right one? Yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Well, she's got all kinds of problems.
- 5:56Speaker 2: She's got issues, but she always has a smiler face.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, you know, like European you know the soccer players,
- 6:05Speaker 3: you know, they go down and they lay there, four
- 6:10Speaker 3: people run out. Then they get to stretch her they
- 6:14Speaker 3: carry the guy off, gets a big ovation and thirty
- 6:19Speaker 3: five seconds later he comes sprinting in as he gets
- 6:22Speaker 3: a Heroes welcome. You know, I accused Blanc of being
- 6:28Speaker 3: an Italian soccer player, that that's what.
- 6:30Speaker 2: They do in Europe.
- 6:32Speaker 3: She said, no, coach, all football players do that, so
- 6:35Speaker 3: I thought it was just European players, but she corrected.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Me before we go to break here, last five games,
- 6:42Speaker 1: your team, at least in one of the two halves
- 6:45Speaker 1: has put up fifty points. You've done that in a
- 6:46Speaker 1: half now thirteen times this season. That's a pretty good run.
- 6:51Speaker 1: When you get out of role what you're able to
- 6:52Speaker 1: do offensively with your team. I know you're still concerned
- 6:57Speaker 1: about some things in the half court offense. Maybe that's
- 7:00Speaker 1: maybe part of that obviously is product of speeding teams up,
- 7:02Speaker 1: getting turnovers, getting easy buckets. But you know, still, fifty
- 7:06Speaker 1: points and a half, that's that's pretty impressive over a
- 7:08Speaker 1: nice stretch there. And then you know you played a
- 7:10Speaker 1: couple of good teams and tough teams, physical teams.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, are they able to do that still?
- 7:15Speaker 3: I think that's a you know, that's a confidence thing
- 7:19Speaker 3: too with the team, because when you say let's go
- 7:24Speaker 3: out and get one hundred tonight. You know, in their mind,
- 7:28Speaker 3: they want to play, they want to play aggressively, they
- 7:31Speaker 3: want to create a lot of shots. They just want
- 7:33Speaker 3: to you know, they just want to go. They just
- 7:36Speaker 3: want to go. They just want to go. You know,
- 7:42Speaker 3: if you say let's go get one hundred tonight, you're
- 7:47Speaker 3: not going to let the other team hold the ball.
- 7:49Speaker 3: You're going to take lots of chances in the back court.
- 7:51Speaker 3: You're going to you're going to try to get in
- 7:53Speaker 3: the passing lane way more often. You're going to push
- 7:57Speaker 3: the ball up the floor on our fence and get
- 7:59Speaker 3: way more early opportunities. Doesn't always happen, but you know,
- 8:05Speaker 3: with the players that we have on our team, we
- 8:08Speaker 3: just need a five minute stretch and we can get
- 8:12Speaker 3: the lead from five to twenty in five to twenty five. Yeah,
- 8:17Speaker 3: no time like that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you've played twenty two games, You've had you've had
- 8:22Speaker 1: fifty runs of at least ten oh this year fifty Wow,
- 8:26Speaker 1: that's yeah, that's impressive. I don't have to go back
- 8:28Speaker 1: because I still have last year's stuff with me. I
- 8:30Speaker 1: don't have to go back and see at this point
- 8:32Speaker 1: how many. But that's maybe a little higher than what
- 8:35Speaker 1: I normally see maybe the point of the season with
- 8:38Speaker 1: your team, but that's a norm though. With your team,
- 8:39Speaker 1: you get a lot of big runs and it happens.
- 8:42Speaker 3: Fast, and you know, at practice it's just a matter
- 8:45Speaker 3: of you know, there's a lot of different ways to
- 8:50Speaker 3: scrimmage in practice, you know, and one way for us
- 8:54Speaker 3: is we just go on half court and then let's
- 8:59Speaker 3: say we're on offen on this half of the court,
- 9:04Speaker 3: and we shoot, and then the other team gets it.
- 9:07Speaker 3: They go down and we're on defense, and then we
- 9:09Speaker 3: come back on offense and we stop. So we just say, look,
- 9:13Speaker 3: this is like in a game. We just need to
- 9:14Speaker 3: score right here, We need to stop right here, and
- 9:18Speaker 3: we need to score. And now you keep playing like
- 9:21Speaker 3: that during the game. You get score, stop, score, stop score.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Next thing you know, you look up, it's twelve Oho
- 9:26Speaker 3: run fourteen oh run yeah, yeah for sure, all right.
- 9:29Speaker 2: We'll take a break, come back with more gino.
- 9:30Speaker 1: It's you kind of women's basketball coaches show live at
- 9:33Speaker 1: cafe or in Manchester back in a minute here on
- 9:35Speaker 1: their field,
