- 0:01What is up, sweet friend?
- 0:04Okay, we're going to start with prayer and then this is going to be a short episode.
- 0:08It really is.
- 0:08I got some beautiful wisdom from a leader of mine and just such a gift in my life.
- 0:13And she has been podcasting for years.
- 0:16She said, listen, mix it up, have short, have long.
- 0:20That way you're really able to add value without it feeling like.
- 0:24You're just, it's always kind of a beast to dig into the content, both for me
- 0:29preparing and then for you guys listening.
- 0:31So just a thought today that I'm sure we're going to revisit and circle back to
- 0:35more and more because it is such a huge part of my ethos around homeschool and
- 0:40business.
- 0:41But before I get into it, we're going to kick it off with prayer.
- 0:44So Lord, I thank you that you are God.
- 0:46I thank you that you cover us.
- 0:47I thank you that you shelter us under your mighty hand.
- 0:50And I pray that you would give me apt words for today.
- 0:54that through the Holy Spirit, whoever listens to this would get exactly what
- 0:58they need.
- 0:59Give each one of us mamas who are seeking to homeschool, who are seeking to build a
- 1:04business, who are seeking to ultimately, Lord, look to you and be faithful to, out
- 1:12of gratitude for what you have done for us on the cross and through all of our lives,
- 1:17really focus on how we can serve your people.
- 1:24and serve your kingdom, your kingdom.
- 1:27So I thank you that you are God.
- 1:29And I pray that you would equip each of our hands to the task that we have before
- 1:34us today, in your holy name.
- 1:36Amen.
- 1:37All right.
- 1:38So here's what we're talking about today.
- 1:40We are talking about homeschooling with the end in mind.
- 1:45OK?
- 1:45So when I was early on in my homeschool journey,
- 1:49We were having babies every two years.
- 1:52We had four kids in six years.
- 1:54And I, I was really tired through my pregnancies.
- 1:58I had a lot of fatigue postpartum.
- 2:00So I feel like we kind of just dragged through many years, many, many years of
- 2:07homeschooling.
- 2:08Cause even once all the babies were here, then it was, we had some, we had some
- 2:14learning challenges that we were navigating.
- 2:16We had some personality challenges.
- 2:18We had a lot of,
- 2:19appointments and therapies and things like that that we were walking through.
- 2:24And so every day I was like, what did we even do today?
- 2:29I fell asleep and my children watched for years, you guys, for years, my children
- 2:34were watching YouTube videos on animals that became friends with human beings.
- 2:40Like that was what we watched and they loved it, but it wasn't, I just felt so
- 2:44much shame and so much guilt around my homeschool journey.
- 2:48So here is what I want to offer to you that was the lifeline I needed to
- 2:52persevere because I really believed in the model of homeschool.
- 2:56I wanted time with my children.
- 2:58I wanted to sow into them.
- 2:59I wanted to give them things that I did not receive, even going to a really good
- 3:04school, as far as learning how to be emotionally healthy in relationships,
- 3:11learning how to.
- 3:13how to be good financial stewards, learning how to work from a place of joy
- 3:18and mission and calling instead of working from a place of, What am I good at?
- 3:22OK, I'll just go in all in on that very narrow view of education.
- 3:26I didn't want my kids to be good workers.
- 3:28I wanted them to be full, full people to operate in their fullness.
- 3:34OK, so here is what the Lord gave to me that was so helpful in these times.
- 3:41He
- 3:42called me to look to the end.
- 3:45And I've had this conversation with so many women over the years.
- 3:48What do you want your children leaving your house knowing?
- 3:53If we get really clear that life is learning, this doesn't stop at 18, there's
- 3:59not some magical endpoint where you check the box and go, learned it all, great.
- 4:04That is such a finite, limited view, okay?
- 4:08There's a statistic out there, I don't recall the exact numbers, but the general
- 4:13gist of the statistic is that most children have lost 95%.
- 4:19It's over 90 % of the information that they have learned by the time they walk
- 4:25across the stage at graduation.
- 4:26In other words, by the time we graduate, the information that we've learned, we've
- 4:32only retained about 5 % of it, okay?
- 4:36That's...
- 4:37That's crazy.
- 4:38And yet here we are as homeschool parents comparing ourselves to the more
- 4:44traditional education model, at least in this generation, the traditional education
- 4:49model is public or private school and finding ourselves lacking somehow.
- 4:53Why?
- 4:54Why are we finding ourselves lacking?
- 4:57Because we think somehow that the experts are going to stuff something into our
- 5:02kids' heads that we don't have the competency to stuff into our kids' heads.
- 5:07These are the, okay listen, there are two different theories of child rearing.
- 5:17There are lots, but in this particular instance there are two.
- 5:20There is this view of children as empty vessels that must be filled by an external
- 5:26source, okay?
- 5:27That's the traditional education model.
- 5:30You need an expert to put the right stuff into your child.
- 5:34And if you don't buy the,
- 5:36right textbooks or you don't engage with the right content or material, then you've
- 5:40missed it.
- 5:41But scripture gives us something different.
- 5:45That passage that says, train up a child in the way he should go.
- 5:49And when he is older, he will not depart from it.
- 5:52We use that as a verse to talk about salvation.
- 5:54But I heard a commentator once say, it is not a salvation verse.
- 5:59Okay.
- 6:00It is a bent verse.
- 6:03In other words,
- 6:05Train up your child in the way that he is already headed based on his unique God
- 6:11-given design.
- 6:13And when he is older, he will basically grow in the correct way.
- 6:17Okay?
- 6:18Find his loves, find his skills, find his giftings and his callings and his unique
- 6:24nature and draw it out of him.
- 6:28Our children are not empty vessels.
- 6:32They are...
- 6:34distinct souls marked by the fingerprint of God with a unique design and
- 6:42competency.
- 6:43And anybody who has more than one child knows this very well.
- 6:47My children were different from pregnancy.
- 6:49I could tell this is a different person, even at that young age, that pre -birth
- 6:56age, they were different people, okay?
- 7:01so much more as they grow, they become more of who they are.
- 7:04My dad had this great line that he said, and for those who have heard other
- 7:09episodes, he's passed away.
- 7:10He's been gone for two and a half years.
- 7:14But he would say, the greatest gift of being a parent is watching your children
- 7:19become who you always knew they were.
- 7:21Now, that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of surprises, as you know well, but they
- 7:27are distinct people, and they always have been.
- 7:31So friend, your job is not to stuff anything in your children.
- 7:36It is to mine and uncover what is already there, to look at it and say, I see God
- 7:43here.
- 7:44You are really gifted in this area.
- 7:46I notice you really love talking about this topic.
- 7:49I see this ability in you.
- 7:52It doesn't mean that we don't call them to grow and stretch into areas where they are
- 7:56uncomfortable.
- 7:58I've got one who does not feel comfortable writing.
- 8:00We still write.
- 8:01I've got another one who does not feel comfortable with, with, literally, so one
- 8:07is like literature writing, the other one's handwriting, does not feel
- 8:10comfortable with handwriting.
- 8:10We still handwrite.
- 8:12We do things that call us to stretch into uncomfortable spaces, but we double down
- 8:18on who are you.
- 8:21And that's where we spend the majority of our time.
- 8:24OK?
- 8:25I still haven't even gotten to the thing that I'm encouraging you all to do.
- 8:28We'll get to that in just a second, because I want to finish this thought.
- 8:31There's this principle that is called the Pareto Principle that says we get 80 % of
- 8:39our output from 20 % of our input.
- 8:42And this wasn't just a cool idea that somebody came up with.
- 8:46This was actually statistically determined first in the area of something related to
- 8:52building.
- 8:53I can't remember.
- 8:53This was an it.
- 8:54This was.
- 8:54a study that was done literally a century or so ago.
- 8:58But then somebody else, so the man named Pareto figured it out in this one specific
- 9:02instance, and then somebody went on to determine that it was actually a universal
- 9:07principle.
- 9:07So what that means in your business is that you will get 80 % of your leads or
- 9:14connections or sales from 20 % of your time or your contacts, OK?
- 9:20You will get
- 9:2180 % of your revenue from 20 % of your product line.
- 9:26You in your homeschool journey, you will get 80 % of your productivity, say, in 20
- 9:34% of your time.
- 9:35Okay.
- 9:36So the goal is more and more to kind of trim the fat so that you are focusing
- 9:40really well in your 20%, which will expand your bottom line in business, your
- 9:46effectiveness and joy in homeschool, whatever it might be.
- 9:49Okay, so.
- 9:51We need to really help our children understand this principle and wrap their
- 9:56brains around their time needs to be well spent in the area of their love.
- 10:02Okay, because they're gonna get maximum benefit from a very small part of what
- 10:09they are spending their time learning.
- 10:10And that's okay.
- 10:11That doesn't mean we throw away history.
- 10:13It doesn't mean we throw away Latin.
- 10:15It doesn't mean if you're a classics girl like I am, it doesn't mean you throw away.
- 10:19you know, reading whole books or anything like that, but recognizing that they have
- 10:22this unique bent, and that's going to be the place where they are the most
- 10:26effective, the most productive for the kingdom.
- 10:29OK?
- 10:29All right.
- 10:30So here is the principle that the Lord gave me.
- 10:33Bring it all the way back.
- 10:34Here's the principle that the Lord gave me.
- 10:36I said it already, didn't I?
- 10:37Shoot all the way to the end of the story.
- 10:40What do you want your children walking out of your house knowing?
- 10:45That's right.
- 10:45And then I started talking about life is learning, and I got on a whole other
- 10:48tangent.
- 10:49What do you want your children walking out of the house learning?
- 10:51I will share mine with you.
- 10:53If it resonates, feel free to take it.
- 10:54I want to hear what yours is, though.
- 10:56Message me.
- 10:57Find me on social media.
- 10:58Let's have a conversation.
- 10:59What is your list?
- 11:00And I would suggest keep it really short as mine is.
- 11:03So I, what I decided is I want my children to know and love the Lord with all their
- 11:09heart, mind, soul and strength.
- 11:11And I want them to be intellectually curious.
- 11:14Okay.
- 11:14I want them to be learners.
- 11:16And my theory is,
- 11:18We're not done yet.
- 11:19My oldest is 12.
- 11:21So I'll let you know how it goes.
- 11:24But my theory is that if I can give them those two things, and of course I can't
- 11:32create their relationship with the Lord, but as a precious mama mentor of mine
- 11:36says, the Lord gave her this picture.
- 11:40You lay the logs.
- 11:42I'm the one who brings the fire.
- 11:45Isn't that great?
- 11:46I'm gonna say that again.
- 11:47You lay the logs.
- 11:48I'm the one who brings the fire.
- 11:50Okay?
- 11:51The Lord is the one who creates the intimate experience that who reveals
- 11:56himself to our children as he has to us.
- 12:00But we can lay the logs.
- 12:02We can facilitate morning time with the scriptures.
- 12:06We can be the one who rises in the morning and opens their Bible.
- 12:11We can play worship music.
- 12:12We can do Bible memory.
- 12:14We can do devotions as a family.
- 12:16All of these things, you know, lead them to the cross for worship.
- 12:19And as I'm saying these, I'm like, Lord, I am not doing a great job on this.
- 12:22I want more for my family.
- 12:24I want more of this.
- 12:25But we have set our sights, and that is our objective.
- 12:28OK?
- 12:29And then if I can teach them the wonder of learning, the beauty of learning, the
- 12:36fascination of the world around us, then they will leave here.
- 12:41and they will be able to learn whatever they need to learn and become whomever
- 12:47they need to become to do their work unto the Lord.
- 12:51Okay?
- 12:52So what that means is for us, some days we're spending a lot of time navigating
- 13:00conflicts because that's part of having a healthy relationship with the Lord is
- 13:06understanding, you know, what is our sin nature?
- 13:09What, what is the, what is the character of man, right?
- 13:14Our fallen nature, how does that play out?
- 13:17How do we rise when we fall in?
- 13:19How do we own our part well?
- 13:21How do we seek forgiveness?
- 13:23OK.
- 13:23One of our baseline non -negotiables to the best of our ability as a family is no
- 13:31hypocrisy.
- 13:32OK.
- 13:32So our kids are going to see us modeling out and walking out what we are calling
- 13:37them to as well.
- 13:38And if you ever want to see a kid get real frustrated, introduce hypocrisy into the
- 13:46mix.
- 13:46All of a sudden, somebody else is held to a different standard than them, that does
- 13:51not go over well.
- 13:52Okay?
- 13:53And the last thing we want to do is kind of like, suppress that in our children,
- 13:58where they start to just become jaded and bitter and cynical.
- 14:04where it's like, oh, well, that's just the way it is.
- 14:06The little guy gets pushed down, the big guy gets to do whatever they want.
- 14:09And then when I get to be the big guy, that's what I'm gonna do.
- 14:11We tell our kids all the time, we too are under authority, right?
- 14:14I'm under my husband's authority.
- 14:16My husband's under the Lord's authority.
- 14:19Like Jesus was under authority, right?
- 14:22The centurion in the gospel said, I too am a man under authority to Jesus, which just
- 14:28blew my mind for years.
- 14:29He knew that,
- 14:33Christ's power was rooted in Christ's submission to the authority of his Father.
- 14:40And that's why he knew that Christ would be able to tell the, I think there were, I
- 14:47forget if it was a sickness or a demon that was plaguing the centurion's servant.
- 14:53And the centurion knew that Christ would be able to command this.
- 15:01demon or sickness to leave this servant because Christ was under authority.
- 15:06Okay.
- 15:07So that's, so that's, sometimes that's school for us is just working through that
- 15:13interpersonal relationship stuff.
- 15:15Sometimes we are just in the car talking about, I just answer questions, right?
- 15:21We're in the car for 45 minutes.
- 15:22The whole time is just me answering questions and fascinating stuff.
- 15:25Everything from, you know, detoxification pathways in the body.
- 15:29In other words, like,
- 15:31You know, sweat.
- 15:32If you don't know what your detox pathways are, this is an important thing to keep
- 15:35open.
- 15:36Sweat, urine, I'm missing one.
- 15:42Hold on.
- 15:43I've got it.
- 15:43It's coming.
- 15:45Breathing.
- 15:45Thank you.
- 15:46And poop.
- 15:47Those are your detox pathways.
- 15:49You want to make sure they're all open and they're all working.
- 15:51Okay.
- 15:52Those are your primary detox pathways.
- 15:53So we'll talk about detox pathways.
- 15:55And then in the next minute, we're talking about heaven.
- 15:57And then in the next minute, we're talking about forgiveness and we're talking about
- 16:01difficult relationship situations.
- 16:03And it's just like, this is school.
- 16:06Engaging with the wonder of the world that the Lord has given.
- 16:09So this is just your quick encouragement today.
- 16:13Get clear on what your end objective is and give yourself a lot of permission for
- 16:19each day to play out very differently.
- 16:21Okay?
- 16:22There are many things that are well -equipping for the future that your
- 16:27children are going to live that don't look like traditional school.
- 16:32And that's okay.
- 16:33That's the beauty of homeschool.
- 16:35Get clear on where you're headed.
- 16:38Get clear on what you feel like the Lord is calling you to orient towards.
- 16:42Get clear on your children's bents.
- 16:45And when they are older, they will not depart from it.
- 16:49Okay, friends, that's your encouragement today.
- 16:51Connect with me.
- 16:52Let me know what you got out of this conversation.
- 16:55If these podcasts are blessing you, leave a review.
- 16:59Let your people know, you know, we're just getting this thing started, but I'm gonna
- 17:03keep showing up every Thursday, giving you guys what I can to encourage you on your
- 17:07way.
- 17:08I appreciate you.
- 17:09Until next time, you have got this.
