- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey, we made it to Friday, right? Depends on what
- 0:24Speaker 1: Friday means to you, right? I mean, by saying, hey,
- 0:28Speaker 1: we made it to Friday, might not mean the same
- 0:31Speaker 1: to some folks. Yeah, Friday's here. Hopefully it's good however
- 0:37Speaker 1: it is. Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here
- 0:39Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone, and where
- 0:42Speaker 1: you can always listen to us for free on the
- 0:44Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app. My name is Craig Wade. Thanks very much
- 0:47Speaker 1: for joining us. We appreciate you listening. to the over
- 0:50Speaker 1: the air terrestrial signal at 1300 on your AM dial. Uh,
- 0:55Speaker 1: we appreciate those of you listening on the I heart
- 0:58Speaker 1: radio app, uh, and, those going to YouTube route as well,
- 1:03Speaker 1: where you can see that both the producer, Jake Herman
- 1:05Speaker 1: and I have faces made for radio. So we're glad
- 1:08Speaker 1: you joined us nonetheless, uh, to talk about a variety
- 1:12Speaker 1: of things on this Friday afternoon, heading into the weekend, uh,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I don't know if cataclysmic is the right word, but
- 1:21Speaker 1: it's an important weekend, not only for the Texas Longhorns,
- 1:23Speaker 1: but for a lot of teams on the college football landscape.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We'll get into that a little more. There's quite a
- 1:28Speaker 1: bit written about what's to come. And I'm going to
- 1:32Speaker 1: share something coming up here in a few minutes with you.
- 1:34Speaker 1: And then something else a little bit later on in
- 1:36Speaker 1: the program. And that will include, you know, the elimination weekend,
- 1:45Speaker 1: if you will. That'll happen not only in the SEC.
- 1:48Speaker 1: but in other places as well. Also, the World Series
- 1:53Speaker 1: begins tonight, in case you'd forgotten about it since I
- 1:56Speaker 1: haven't played in a few days. The Milwaukee Brewers, who've
- 2:00Speaker 1: had eight days off, at home against the Tampa Bay Rays,
- 2:06Speaker 1: who've had a few days off. And they'll go tonight.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Nick Martinez will start for the Rays. And for the Brewers,
- 2:12Speaker 1: it's the Miz, Jacob Mizorowski, who will go for Milwaukee.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We'll hear from the managers tonight. of those two teams
- 2:19Speaker 1: as well. And coming up here in just a few minutes,
- 2:25Speaker 1: we'll bring you an excerpt from Longhorn Weekly with Coach
- 2:31Speaker 1: Sark that aired last night. We do it on Fridays,
- 2:35Speaker 1: both in the two o'clock hour and then for those
- 2:37Speaker 1: who miss it, can't join us in the two o'clock hour,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but can in the four o'clock hour. We play it
- 2:43Speaker 1: then as well because there's some who can listen now
- 2:47Speaker 1: that aren't listening to the program later. There's some who
- 2:49Speaker 1: can listen later that can't listen now. So we didn't
- 2:51Speaker 1: want you to miss out on it. It's kind of
- 2:53Speaker 1: the game planning thing and his look at the opponent.
- 2:56Speaker 1: We do this every week on the show. The show
- 2:58Speaker 1: airs Thursday night at 7 o'clock. It was on last night.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And we had Kwon Cosby join us as a special guest.
- 3:05Speaker 1: We have a lot of fun on that program. But
- 3:07Speaker 1: we talk football and we talk about what else is
- 3:09Speaker 1: to come. And we know what's coming. Right in front
- 3:11Speaker 1: of them, the Ole Miss Rebels. Jake Herman is the producer.
- 3:16Speaker 1: of this program. He is also a part of our
- 3:20Speaker 1: Longhorns Game Day programming, which will come your way tomorrow
- 3:24Speaker 1: afternoon from Bevo Boulevard down in the Winship area, circle, space,
- 3:33Speaker 1: whatever It is down there, right?
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we quoted Joni Mitchell talking about it last week.
- 3:37Speaker 2: It's changing every week. It's exciting to see what progress
- 3:41Speaker 2: is made, what food trucks are popping up.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Now they've got these sort.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Of bar railings that you can come and rest a
- 3:47Speaker 2: drink on while you stand there and listen to us. Yeah,
- 3:49Speaker 2: we've gotten some good crowds for every game that's kicked
- 3:52Speaker 2: off after 11 a.m. So it should be a solid
- 3:54Speaker 2: crowd for a night kickoff tomorrow night.
- 3:57Speaker 1: There might even be some food left even after Mark Henry,
- 4:02Speaker 1: you know? avails himself of the cuisine that's available down
- 4:06Speaker 1: there off the food trucks and things.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Well, there were some delicious wings we had from It's
- 4:09Speaker 2: A Wraps, the food truck right next door. Juicy Lucy's
- 4:13Speaker 2: always a favorite as well. So we'll see what comes
- 4:15Speaker 2: across his plate.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Okay. All right. Before we go any further on this,
- 4:21Speaker 1: we've got something else we're going to do here in
- 4:23Speaker 1: a couple of minutes. But before we get to that,
- 4:26Speaker 1: are we coming up to a momentous occasion for you?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Is it next week? Don't you go see the allergist?
- 4:34Speaker 4: Oh, no, no.
- 4:35Speaker 3: So I saw the allergist this morning.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:37Speaker 3: And I'm going to follow up next week.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That's what it is. That's right. All right. So you
- 4:41Speaker 1: went to the allergist. Now, people have heard me say that,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, Jake Herman is 27 now and food allergies.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Probably not 27, but we're going to find out. what
- 4:50Speaker 1: your upgraded allergic content is, not just to foods, but what,
- 4:55Speaker 1: to pollens or whatever?
- 4:56Speaker 3: I'll get my.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Version of the SEC student athlete availability report.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I like it. I like that. Okay.
- 5:02Speaker 2: At least 27 allergens were tested for when they took
- 5:05Speaker 2: three vials of my blood this morning for further evaluation.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And then, and so they took, they took... vials of
- 5:13Speaker 1: your blood. They didn't do the scratch test with you. Now,
- 5:15Speaker 1: why was that?
- 5:16Speaker 2: No, that's what they call a complex case, Craig. They
- 5:19Speaker 2: can't do the scratch test.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Because- Why is that?
- 5:22Speaker 2: I've got some chronic itching stuff that's related to allergies.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So I take medication to deal with that. So that
- 5:29Speaker 2: would make everything negative. If I got off the medication,
- 5:32Speaker 2: not only would I be unhappy, but everything would be positive.
- 5:34Speaker 3: So that doesn't work for me.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So are you telling me that you couldn't do a
- 5:38Speaker 1: scratch test because you get the hives if they scratch?
- 5:42Speaker 3: Pretty much.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Is that it?
- 5:43Speaker 3: Pretty much. So it's, you know.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Bless your heart.
- 5:47Speaker 2: We're working on it. Newer research is showing you can
- 5:50Speaker 2: outgrow some of these allergies.
- 5:52Speaker 1: That's true.
- 5:52Speaker 3: I haven't been tested since I was a college student.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Really?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Well, and I've been in college more recently than this, luckily.
- 5:58Speaker 2: But my last allergy test was seven years ago.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:01Speaker 3: So I'm hoping some of these numbers have come down.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Well, and didn't you also say that you have... You've also...
- 6:14Speaker 1: been able to, they're trying to wean you off certain
- 6:17Speaker 1: allergens to certain foods. Is that the way to describe it?
- 6:20Speaker 2: Well, they're trying to figure out if I can take
- 6:23Speaker 2: a food challenge. So I'm allergic to shrimp, but the
- 6:27Speaker 2: numbers are pretty low. And if these numbers come in
- 6:29Speaker 2: low again, I can go back to my allergist office
- 6:33Speaker 2: and eat shrimp under careful observation.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:37Speaker 2: And then, you know, small amount is okay. 20 minutes later,
- 6:40Speaker 2: here's a little more. And if I pass the test,
- 6:43Speaker 2: then there you go.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Boom.
- 6:44Speaker 3: Right back in the diet.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:46Speaker 5: So.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I say back in and I've never eaten it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, right. All right. So you say under special supervision,
- 6:51Speaker 1: does the doctor like sit there and watch you eat shrimp?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Is that how that works?
- 6:55Speaker 3: I mean, I guess. I've never done it. I did
- 6:57Speaker 3: one at home.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I mean, the two of you get together, like, and
- 7:00Speaker 1: you have this big platter, you know, of peel and
- 7:04Speaker 1: eat shrimp. And you've got these lemons there to squeeze
- 7:07Speaker 1: the lemon juice on it. And you do that. And
- 7:09Speaker 1: you got the cocktail sauce. And Doc is having himself
- 7:12Speaker 1: just a good old time. He's popping shrimp. He doesn't
- 7:14Speaker 1: have any problem with that. But he's watching you to
- 7:17Speaker 1: see if all of a sudden you blow up like
- 7:19Speaker 1: a balloon. Is that how that works? Oh, no.
- 7:21Speaker 6: Salt and pepper.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Interesting. Interesting.
- 7:24Speaker 3: No, I guess that's how it's going to work. I
- 7:26Speaker 3: hope we had a lot to talk about. I also think,
- 7:30Speaker 3: do the other doctors get jealous? Hey, you know, this
- 7:32Speaker 3: person took an ice cream challenge today. Oh, I got
- 7:35Speaker 3: to eat a steak.
- 7:36Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. Hey, hey, hey, I got the liver and onions, dude. Okay?
- 7:41Speaker 3: What about the filet mignon?
- 7:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So they have this big chart, and it's like an
- 7:45Speaker 1: assignments board, you know? Anybody ever at old school that
- 7:49Speaker 1: saw Hill Street Blues, and they saw the assignment there?
- 7:51Speaker 1: They have an assignment board up there. Steak. That's Dr. Smith.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Seniority rules.
- 7:58Speaker 7: Shrimp.
- 7:59Speaker 8: Dr.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Phillips. And all this kind of stuff. For you, it.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Would be the broccoli challenge. Be the one you want
- 8:04Speaker 3: to avoid.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Well, it's a well-known fact that I am allergic to broccoli.
- 8:09Speaker 7: Right.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Oh, wait.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I just thought you didn't like it. I forgot you
- 8:11Speaker 3: were allergic.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Yes and yes. And I didn't like it when I
- 8:15Speaker 1: was a kid. And it used to make me physically
- 8:18Speaker 1: ill and all this stuff. And my parents just thought
- 8:20Speaker 1: I was, you know... sandbagging they thought that it was
- 8:23Speaker 1: then then we go to the do we go to
- 8:25Speaker 1: the doctor we found i'm allergic to broccoli and cauliflower
- 8:28Speaker 1: it's all that leafy thing off of that you had
- 8:30Speaker 1: to feel so vindicated i did but it also at
- 8:34Speaker 1: the time said that i was allergic to white bread
- 8:37Speaker 1: and also to oreos wait.
- 8:40Speaker 3: What they have name brands on allergy tests.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Well that the stuff that was in it Yeah, Craig,
- 8:46Speaker 1: it comes back. You're allergic to mellow yellow. You know,
- 8:49Speaker 1: for about six weeks, I couldn't eat anything but pumpernickel.
- 8:53Speaker 1: That's when I was a kid.
- 8:55Speaker 3: So no wonder you're so fascinated by my allergies.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm telling you, I still have them to ragweed and cedar. Now,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I had no idea about cedar until I got in
- 9:04Speaker 1: Texas and was moved down in the Austin area. And
- 9:07Speaker 1: about seven years into it is when all of a
- 9:09Speaker 1: sudden I just broke out everywhere. Didn't know what was
- 9:11Speaker 1: going on. Went to the doctor and they said, well,
- 9:13Speaker 1: you're off the chart on cedar. I'm like, cedar? I've
- 9:15Speaker 1: never had any problem with cedar. And they said, yeah, right.
- 9:20Speaker 1: They said, how long have you lived here? I said,
- 9:22Speaker 1: seven years. They said, yeah. The average expectancy on your
- 9:28Speaker 1: body's resistance, if you are susceptible to being allergic to
- 9:31Speaker 1: cedar pollen, is in the six to seven year range.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It happened at the same time that Mack Brown had
- 9:37Speaker 1: it happened to him. So I wonder if I get
- 9:39Speaker 1: bailed out by the break when I left Texas, four
- 9:41Speaker 1: years in college, now a year plus back. Am I
- 9:46Speaker 1: coming up on it?
- 9:46Speaker 9: No.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Well, I started to say, I think if your body's
- 9:50Speaker 1: resistant to it, I don't know. Doctors smarter about it
- 9:54Speaker 1: than I am. They're the ones who could Can tell
- 9:57Speaker 1: you that for sure.
- 9:58Speaker 2: So we'll see what the arrivals board has for my challenges. Hopefully,
- 10:03Speaker 2: we can reduce that 27 allergies. We're expecting a full report.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I want to know. You can bring in the chart
- 10:09Speaker 1: if you want. I want to know exactly everything that
- 10:13Speaker 1: you're allergic to.
- 10:14Speaker 3: I wonder if the peanut's still going to be off
- 10:16Speaker 3: the charts.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah, see, you know, I have to be careful. I
- 10:19Speaker 1: have some nutter butter bites here. But I have to
- 10:21Speaker 1: be careful if I eat anything with peanut butter or
- 10:25Speaker 1: peanuts in it because so as to keep you from just,
- 10:29Speaker 1: you know, busting out all over and having all kinds
- 10:31Speaker 1: of issues. I kind of keep it away because I
- 10:33Speaker 1: love peanut butter. Absolutely love it. But I got to
- 10:36Speaker 1: be careful because I don't want Jake to get ill
- 10:40Speaker 1: or twitchy or. Itchy or sick or anything like that.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 2: And luckily, look, you're not like eating peanuts at the
- 10:47Speaker 2: baseball game here. If there was dust flying everywhere, I'd
- 10:49Speaker 2: have some issues. But a peanut butter cracker, that's going
- 10:51Speaker 2: to be okay.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Have you ever told somebody in a ballpark, please keep
- 10:55Speaker 1: your peanuts to yourself?
- 10:56Speaker 3: I have had to once.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Really?
- 10:58Speaker 3: How'd that go down? Oh, they felt so bad. They
- 11:01Speaker 3: felt so bad.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Did they really?
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:04Speaker 1: You landed on a good person then.
- 11:05Speaker 3: I did because, well, it's not telling them to stop
- 11:08Speaker 3: eating the peanuts.
- 11:09Speaker 2: It's telling them to, hey, stop dropping your shells at
- 11:11Speaker 2: my feet, which is a common courtesy anyway.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Oh, you know, I used to tell my sons when
- 11:17Speaker 1: I would take them to a baseball game, there are
- 11:18Speaker 1: two actual laws. They have to have a hot dog
- 11:26Speaker 1: in the ballpark and you have to eat some peanuts.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And they were like, really? When they were a kid.
- 11:30Speaker 2: I would have had to relive your broccoli experience at
- 11:32Speaker 2: that point. Yeah.
- 11:33Speaker 1: So, because what I do, now, Linda's allergic to peanuts. So,
- 11:38Speaker 1: when we've gone to ballgames, and we went again to
- 11:42Speaker 1: ballgames this year, when we've gone, like early in the season,
- 11:47Speaker 1: we saw the Astros play the Dodgers over in Houston.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I don't get peanuts when I'm with her because I
- 11:52Speaker 1: don't even want to, and she's not, she's not as,
- 11:55Speaker 1: you know, freaky as, resistant on it as your situation.
- 12:00Speaker 3: It's probably like my other allergies, her peanut allergy.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So, uh, but, but out of courtesy to her, you know,
- 12:06Speaker 1: I don't, I don't, I don't even get them. If, if,
- 12:09Speaker 1: if I happened to, when I was with Cameron for
- 12:11Speaker 1: the women's final four and we were out in Arizona
- 12:15Speaker 1: and we had a day off before the things got
- 12:18Speaker 1: going and the Diamondbacks were playing the Tigers and Tarek
- 12:21Speaker 1: Scouble was pitching for Detroit and, um, I remember this.
- 12:25Speaker 1: I talked to you on air before you went. Robbie Ray,
- 12:27Speaker 1: I think, was going for the D-backs before he went
- 12:29Speaker 1: to San Diego.
- 12:30Speaker 8: I think it was.
- 12:31Speaker 3: It was a one-nothing ballgame.
- 12:32Speaker 1: One-nothing ballgame. A Corbin Carroll home run in the bottom
- 12:34Speaker 1: of the first, and that was it. And, but, I
- 12:38Speaker 1: was in peanut heaven on that. I'm eating a whole
- 12:41Speaker 1: big old bag of peanuts. My own personal thing is also,
- 12:43Speaker 1: I like to drink the, have one, only one, one
- 12:48Speaker 1: of the hometown beer of that team. Now, in a
- 12:51Speaker 1: lot of places, you know, if it's, St. Louis is
- 12:55Speaker 1: going to be Budweiser or Wrigley Field would be Budweiser.
- 12:59Speaker 1: But there was a time, you know, you go see
- 13:00Speaker 1: a White Sox in Chicago, you're having a Heidelman's Old Style,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, or you go to Pittsburgh, you have Iron
- 13:06Speaker 1: City or Icy Light beer, you know, Iron City beer, whatever.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So there's different ones.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Peanut heaven, that's where I would go if I ate
- 13:15Speaker 2: a peanut. I would hope it happened. It might be
- 13:17Speaker 2: peanut somewhere else.
- 13:18Speaker 1: It would die and send you to heaven. I get it.
- 13:20Speaker 1: All right.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I understand.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Okay. Here's what I'm going to do right now. Lo
- 13:27Speaker 1: and behold, I had an extra pair of tickets for
- 13:33Speaker 1: tomorrow night's game between the Longhorns. And I have to
- 13:36Speaker 1: specify this. As we know, this is a massive sports
- 13:41Speaker 1: weekend in this town. I mean, it starts tonight with
- 13:44Speaker 1: some huge high school games. You got the Battle of
- 13:46Speaker 1: the Lakes. You got Westlake Lake Travis going on over
- 13:49Speaker 1: at Leaf Johnson Ford Field at Cavalier Stadium. there in Lakeway,
- 13:53Speaker 1: or in BK, well, it said in Lakeway.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Where Lake Travis is looking to get back on the
- 13:59Speaker 3: right track.
- 13:59Speaker 1: That's right. So that stadium there in Lakeway hosting that
- 14:06Speaker 1: game tonight, I mentioned BK, that's where the new Leaf
- 14:10Speaker 1: Johnson dealership is. But anyway, that's in BK. So you
- 14:13Speaker 1: have that tonight. Just up the road from a St. Gerald,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I am not kidding you, Number one in the state
- 14:19Speaker 1: against number 11 in the state. You have Stephenville, the
- 14:22Speaker 1: top-ranked team, unbeaten in the defending 4A Division I state champions,
- 14:26Speaker 1: taking on this rising team at Gerald, coached by Alan Hare.
- 14:32Speaker 1: And that is tonight. That's a big game. But there's
- 14:36Speaker 1: other big games as well going on around the area.
- 14:38Speaker 1: So that's tonight. Then you got tomorrow. And you got
- 14:42Speaker 1: the Longhorns against Ole Miss. And then on Sunday, yes,
- 14:46Speaker 1: it's F1 weekend. In case you're wondering why hotel rooms
- 14:51Speaker 1: are in the four-digit variety, even for the budget hotels,
- 14:54Speaker 1: I'm going to dinner tonight with my friends from Westwood One.
- 14:57Speaker 1: We're doing the national broadcast, Danny Reed and Derek Rackley,
- 15:01Speaker 1: the producer, Tim Parker, Mike Purtle, the engineer who helps
- 15:05Speaker 1: us out a lot of games as well. They're going
- 15:08Speaker 1: to dinner with Linda and myself tonight. And Cameron's going
- 15:13Speaker 1: to join us as well. And I think Brant Freeman's
- 15:16Speaker 1: going to come along because Brant and Danny are longtime
- 15:19Speaker 1: friends from the Sunbelt days when Danny was doing Georgia Southern.
- 15:23Speaker 1: So anyway, we're all going to dinner. And so as
- 15:28Speaker 1: we go to dinner tonight, we're talking about, you know,
- 15:32Speaker 1: all the big events that are going on this weekend.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And you have those high school football games I mentioned tonight.
- 15:39Speaker 1: And then Texas Ole Miss tomorrow. And then on Sunday,
- 15:44Speaker 1: is the F1 race. So I asked them where they
- 15:48Speaker 1: were staying and they're staying at one of those, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 1: a nice enough hotel for some, like some business travelers,
- 15:56Speaker 1: but it's a, but it's a more of a budget
- 15:59Speaker 1: hotel where you can usually find rooms in the anywhere
- 16:03Speaker 1: from 75 to $ 150 range, something like that normally. And
- 16:09Speaker 1: I said, Oh, you're at such and such. And they said, yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 1: three 50 at night. Oh, And that was because it
- 16:15Speaker 1: was booked months in advance. You try to get a
- 16:17Speaker 1: hotel room tonight, tomorrow, Sunday, good luck even finding a
- 16:25Speaker 1: room available because of F1 weekend. And what the other
- 16:28Speaker 1: thing that they're saying is, is that Monday going out
- 16:32Speaker 1: is going to break the record of the Monday that
- 16:35Speaker 1: comes off the ACL Fest, that this will be the
- 16:39Speaker 1: busiest travel day ever going out of, Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Leave yourself some time.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of time. Busiest travel day ever out
- 16:51Speaker 1: of that.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Better start looking for rooms up in Williamson County.
- 16:55Speaker 1: Yeah, good old Wilco. Okay, so here's the deal. I
- 17:01Speaker 1: did have a couple of Longhorn football tickets passed along
- 17:05Speaker 1: to me. So I've got two to give away. And
- 17:11Speaker 1: here's how we're going to do it. We're going to
- 17:13Speaker 1: do it on the one hand, you have to do
- 17:15Speaker 1: it as always when we do a giveaway on the
- 17:17Speaker 1: TalkBack feature, the TalkBack microphone on the iHeartRadio app. So
- 17:21Speaker 1: what you do is you make sure you have the
- 17:22Speaker 1: iHeartRadio app downloaded on your smartphone, be it an iPhone
- 17:26Speaker 1: or an Android. Just download the app if you haven't already.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Most of our listeners already have it downloaded because they
- 17:32Speaker 1: listen to the show a lot. If they get out
- 17:35Speaker 1: of the listening area of 1300 on the AM dial,
- 17:38Speaker 1: they listen to us. And we appreciate that. And that's
- 17:41Speaker 1: where you can listen along on football games and, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: Texas games and things of that nature and the press
- 17:45Speaker 1: conferences on Monday. So you make sure you have it
- 17:49Speaker 1: downloaded on your iHeartRadio app. Once you do that, in
- 17:53Speaker 1: your search bar or your search window, a little search
- 17:57Speaker 1: magnifying glass, whatever it is, you search AM 1300 The Zone.
- 18:01Speaker 1: It'll pop straight up. And when AM 1300 The Zone
- 18:04Speaker 1: pops up, you're going to see two buttons that There's
- 18:07Speaker 1: a white button shaped like a little triangle or arrowhead.
- 18:11Speaker 1: That's to listen to whatever's going on in the air.
- 18:13Speaker 1: There's a red button with a little white microphone in it.
- 18:16Speaker 1: That's the key. That's the talkback mic. So you press
- 18:19Speaker 1: that button and you leave us a message up to
- 18:22Speaker 1: 30 seconds. Don't go beyond 30. It'll cut you off.
- 18:24Speaker 1: But you won't even need 30 seconds. All you need
- 18:26Speaker 1: to do is answer this question and then you'll know.
- 18:32Speaker 1: So the log horns are getting ready, as we know.
- 18:37Speaker 1: to take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Now, they met
- 18:42Speaker 1: two times relatively recently, and they split the two games
- 18:46Speaker 1: in 2012 and 2013. And each team won on the
- 18:50Speaker 1: road when they did that that time, in those years
- 18:55Speaker 1: when they split. In 2012, Texas won 66-31 over at
- 18:59Speaker 1: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. In 2013, Ole Miss won back here in
- 19:03Speaker 1: Austin 44-23. Texas leads the all-time series 6-2. Now, they
- 19:11Speaker 1: lead the all-time series 6-2. They've won two out of
- 19:13Speaker 1: three at home, and they've won one on the road.
- 19:17Speaker 1: Neutral site, 3-1. And the last time they played at
- 19:24Speaker 1: a neutral site was a bowl game that Texas won.
- 19:29Speaker 1: You be the first person on the talkback mic to
- 19:33Speaker 1: tell us what bowl game that was When Texas beat
- 19:36Speaker 1: Ole Miss the last time they played on a neutral site,
- 19:39Speaker 1: be the first person with the correct answer, and you'll
- 19:41Speaker 1: get a pair of tickets to tomorrow's game, Texas and
- 19:44Speaker 1: Ole Miss. Again, on the talkback feature on the iHeartRadio app,
- 19:49Speaker 1: first correct answer, we'll get a pair of tickets to
- 19:52Speaker 1: Texas and Ole Miss. Coming up, we'll hear from Longhorn's
- 19:55Speaker 1: head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, when we continue on 13 Under
- 19:57Speaker 1: the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. I don't care.
- 20:10Speaker 2: If Monday's blue, Tuesday's gray, and Wednesday too.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Thursday, I don't care about you.
- 20:19Speaker 4: It's Friday, I'm in love.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Aren't we all in love with Fridays? Well, we are
- 20:27Speaker 1: if Friday means the traditional Friday, end of the work week.
- 20:35Speaker 1: spot on the calendar for you. And if you've got
- 20:36Speaker 1: the next couple of days off, good on you. Good
- 20:39Speaker 1: for you. I hope you enjoy it. For those of you,
- 20:41Speaker 1: and Jake's got a few friends who fall into this category,
- 20:44Speaker 1: for whom Friday is the midpoint of their week. What
- 20:47Speaker 1: does that mean? Do they get Monday and Tuesday off
- 20:49Speaker 1: or Tuesday and Wednesday off? How does that work?
- 20:50Speaker 2: Monday, Tuesday off for my friends in the news producing world.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Okay. All right. For those of you in that realm,
- 20:59Speaker 1: hopefully we help you get over the hump. And then,
- 21:01Speaker 1: bless your hearts, there's some of you for whom Friday's
- 21:04Speaker 1: just kind of the start of the work week. But hey,
- 21:07Speaker 1: that means Wednesday and Thursday are big for you, right?
- 21:09Speaker 1: So we hope it goes well for you. It went
- 21:11Speaker 1: well for one guy who knew the answer to our
- 21:15Speaker 1: Longhorn trivia question, to win a pair of tickets for
- 21:17Speaker 1: tomorrow evening's game against the Ole Miss Rebels at DKR
- 21:21Speaker 1: Texas Memorial Stadium. The question was, the Longhorns lead the
- 21:25Speaker 1: overall series 6-2. And Texas.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Overall has won two of the three in Austin. They
- 21:34Speaker 1: won the only time they played in Oxford. That was
- 21:37Speaker 1: back in 2012, and they'll be going back there next year.
- 21:41Speaker 1: And they're three and one in neutral sites. That would
- 21:45Speaker 1: mean bowl games. So what I wanted to know is
- 21:50Speaker 1: the last time they got together in a bowl game
- 21:54Speaker 1: at a neutral site, what bowl game was it? And
- 21:57Speaker 1: this gentleman knew it.
- 21:57Speaker 9: 1966 Blue Bonnet Bowl in Houston.
- 22:04Speaker 1: All right, Kyle. Congratulations. You're the winner. Yep. 1966 in
- 22:10Speaker 1: the Blue Bonnet Bowl in Houston. And Texas had played
- 22:15Speaker 1: Ole Miss other times. 1958 Cotton Bowl was the first
- 22:21Speaker 1: bowl game that Texas played in that Darryl Royal coached
- 22:26Speaker 1: in coming off that surprising loss 57 season, but Ole
- 22:31Speaker 1: Miss was great. Johnny Ball was coach of that team,
- 22:33Speaker 1: and they won that one over the Longhorns by a
- 22:35Speaker 1: score of 39-7. Then they played in 1962, and in
- 22:45Speaker 1: the Cotton Bowl. By the way, they had one neutral
- 22:48Speaker 1: side game back in 1912, but the other three games
- 22:50Speaker 1: were in the bowl game. 62 was in the Sugar Bowl,
- 22:55Speaker 1: and Texas won that one 12-7. And then in 1966,
- 22:59Speaker 1: or actually that was in the Cotton Bowl where Texas
- 23:03Speaker 1: won that one 12-7. Then 1966, as Kyle mentioned, in
- 23:06Speaker 1: the Blue Bonnet Bowl in Houston, one of those bowl
- 23:10Speaker 1: games that's gone on to the great beyond. It was
- 23:12Speaker 1: played at Rice Stadium for several years. When the Astrodome
- 23:15Speaker 1: first opened, or a couple years after that, they played
- 23:19Speaker 1: it in the Astrodome and changed the name to the
- 23:21Speaker 1: Astro Blue Bonnet Bowl for a while. Then it just
- 23:24Speaker 1: went back to being the Blue Bonnet Bowl. Texas played
- 23:28Speaker 1: I think in the last Blue Body Bowl, one of
- 23:29Speaker 1: the last ones, a game against Air Force back in
- 23:33Speaker 1: the 80s as well. Okay, but they're playing here in
- 23:36Speaker 1: Austin tomorrow. And last night on Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark,
- 23:40Speaker 1: we always take a look at the opponent. And here
- 23:42Speaker 1: was our conversation about this matchup between Texas and Mississippi.
- 23:46Speaker 1: And Ole Miss, 5-1, their one loss was to Florida.
- 23:50Speaker 1: So obviously we know what Florida's all about as well.
- 23:53Speaker 1: But this is a team that knocked off LSU. They're
- 23:56Speaker 1: up to number seven in the country, and they've been really,
- 23:58Speaker 1: really good.
- 23:59Speaker 10: Really good football team. A dear friend of mine is
- 24:01Speaker 10: their head coach, Pete Golding. We were together for two
- 24:04Speaker 10: years at Alabama as coordinators and won a national championship together.
- 24:08Speaker 10: And he went on to Ole Miss to work for
- 24:10Speaker 10: Coach Kiffin and took over last year kind of the
- 24:13Speaker 10: start of the playoffs, which was.
- 24:14Speaker 6: A unique time.
- 24:15Speaker 10: But what a tremendous job that he did last year
- 24:18Speaker 10: in the playoffs and getting them to the semis. What
- 24:21Speaker 10: a job he's done the start of this season. You
- 24:23Speaker 10: can see his kind of imprint on the team. They're
- 24:27Speaker 10: a physical group. He believes in running the ball, believes
- 24:30Speaker 10: in playing good defense. But one thing that hasn't changed
- 24:34Speaker 10: is Trinidad Chambliss at quarterback. And, boy, is he a dynamic,
- 24:37Speaker 10: dynamic football player.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Yeah. What are the things, the challenges that he presents
- 24:41Speaker 1: with everything he can do?
- 24:43Speaker 10: Well, I think one is there's a level of confidence
- 24:47Speaker 10: in which he plays the game. He was a highly
- 24:50Speaker 10: successful player at Ferris State, and he kind of goes
- 24:53Speaker 10: under the radar to Ole Miss and is not the starter.
- 24:57Speaker 10: I think three games into the year, he gets put
- 24:59Speaker 10: into action and has never looked back since. But I
- 25:02Speaker 10: think it was the confidence he gains as the player
- 25:04Speaker 10: at Ferris State. Then he gets to Ole Miss, has
- 25:07Speaker 10: the season he had last year, And he really just
- 25:09Speaker 10: hasn't missed a beat. It's his ability to innately play
- 25:13Speaker 10: the game on schedule from the pocket, but it's his
- 25:17Speaker 10: playmaking ability on the off-schedule plays.
- 25:20Speaker 6: And he can run.
- 25:22Speaker 10: And believe me, he's probably going to be one of,
- 25:25Speaker 10: if not the fastest guy in the field Saturday.
- 25:27Speaker 6: He can run. But what he does is scramble the pass.
- 25:30Speaker 10: And so when he breaks the pocket and he starts
- 25:32Speaker 10: to scramble, it's all the shots he takes down the
- 25:34Speaker 10: field once the pocket breaks down. So we've got to
- 25:37Speaker 10: do a great job of trying to contain him in
- 25:39Speaker 10: the pocket. We've got to do a great job of
- 25:41Speaker 10: staying sticky in coverage for the first.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Play and the second play, as I always like to
- 25:45Speaker 6: call it.
- 25:46Speaker 10: All the while, they got a running back, Kiwan Lacy,
- 25:48Speaker 10: who's a fantastic player as well, who can hurt.
- 25:51Speaker 5: You on the ground.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, Kiwan Lacy, a lot of folks know, is a
- 25:54Speaker 1: former Missouri Tiger. He's also a former Lancaster Tiger from
- 25:56Speaker 1: the Dallas Fort Worth area. I know Chris Gilbert of
- 25:58Speaker 1: your staff, well acquainted with him and a guy who can,
- 26:01Speaker 1: he's had to fight through some injuries, but he's really
- 26:03Speaker 1: been effective.
- 26:04Speaker 10: He really has, and I'm a lot of admiration for
- 26:07Speaker 10: him for the toughness that he's exuding because you know
- 26:09Speaker 10: I know he's dealing with a leg injury he's dealing
- 26:11Speaker 10: with looks like sounds like a shoulder injury but he's
- 26:14Speaker 10: fighting through it he's been in and out of the
- 26:15Speaker 10: lineup but man when he's healthy when he's going he
- 26:18Speaker 10: can make it he can make it very difficult because
- 26:20Speaker 10: you're trying to put all this attention on stopping the
- 26:22Speaker 10: passing game and Chambliss at the same time they're running
- 26:25Speaker 10: stretch outside zone to to number five and Lacey and
- 26:29Speaker 10: and uh you know we saw the amount I don't
- 26:31Speaker 10: know how many touchdowns he had last season for him
- 26:33Speaker 10: so They're a great two-headed monster to go along with
- 26:36Speaker 10: a lot of skill that they have at the wide
- 26:37Speaker 10: receiver and tight end position.
- 26:39Speaker 1: Let me ask you about the defense because that's the
- 26:41Speaker 1: Pete Golding specialty as well. Your thoughts on that defense?
- 26:44Speaker 10: Well, I think everything they do starts up front. You know, Echols,
- 26:48Speaker 10: Will Echols is a first-round draft pick, hands down, and
- 26:51Speaker 10: he's kind of at the forefront of what they do defensively.
- 26:56Speaker 10: Cam Franklin is a monster at one of the defensive
- 26:59Speaker 10: end spots, kind of Reminds me of Alfred Collins because
- 27:02Speaker 10: of the size, 6'5, 300-pound defensive end. And then to me,
- 27:07Speaker 10: where Pete makes his, hey, it's the stickiness in coverage,
- 27:11Speaker 10: similar to our coverage mechanics, very kind of man principles.
- 27:16Speaker 10: Even when they're playing zone, it can feel like man,
- 27:19Speaker 10: very contested. And so they challenge you at the line
- 27:23Speaker 10: of scrimmage. They challenge you in the secondary. A lot
- 27:27Speaker 10: of new faces, especially in the back end. I think
- 27:29Speaker 10: they had some growing pains early in the season, but
- 27:31Speaker 10: have gotten better and better and better. And we saw
- 27:33Speaker 10: what they did to Missouri last week. I think beat
- 27:35Speaker 10: them 31-3, held them to three points. A Missouri team,
- 27:38Speaker 10: by the way, that was hot. So we know what
- 27:40Speaker 10: this group is all about.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And that's what the SEC has been all about this year, right?
- 27:44Speaker 6: It's been crazy. It's been crazy.
- 27:46Speaker 10: You know, I was joking the one day about... Florida
- 27:50Speaker 10: seemed unbeatable. They had just, they had just beaten old
- 27:53Speaker 10: miss 52 to 28. And then they.
- 27:55Speaker 6: Turn around and go to Missouri.
- 27:57Speaker 5: All right.
- 27:58Speaker 10: And Missouri hands it, hands it to them. Then South
- 28:01Speaker 10: Carolina beats Florida. Then Florida comes and beats us. And
- 28:03Speaker 10: then old miss goes and beats Missouri last week, 31
- 28:07Speaker 10: to three. So it's like, who's who, but all the
- 28:08Speaker 10: while Auburn goes to Athens, Georgia and beats Georgia. Kentucky
- 28:12Speaker 10: goes to Norman and beats Oklahoma.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Alabama goes to Tennessee.
- 28:17Speaker 10: Alabama goes to Tennessee and Tennessee beats them by three scores.
- 28:20Speaker 10: So it's like, I've said this all along. I don't
- 28:23Speaker 10: think people wanted to believe me. Any team in our
- 28:26Speaker 10: conference can beat any other team in our conference on
- 28:29Speaker 10: any given Saturday. Forget what's on the side of the helmets.
- 28:33Speaker 10: Forget what jersey they're wearing. There's too many good players.
- 28:36Speaker 10: There's too many good coaches. There's too many tough environments
- 28:39Speaker 10: that everybody's playing in. It's any given Saturday. And so
- 28:43Speaker 10: when I always said like, Yes, you have to be
- 28:46Speaker 10: physically tough to compete in this league. You have to
- 28:48Speaker 10: be mentally tough to compete in this league because you
- 28:51Speaker 10: have to get back up the very next Saturday. Forget
- 28:54Speaker 10: what nobody cares what you did last Saturday. What are
- 28:57Speaker 10: you going to do this Saturday? That's the most important thing.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Absolutely, for sure. Our coverage will begin here on the
- 29:03Speaker 1: zone some four hours prior to kick, and that will
- 29:08Speaker 1: be at 2.30 with the third and longhorned. preview with
- 29:14Speaker 1: the 3rd and Longhorn podcast, guys. At 3.30, it's Longhorns
- 29:17Speaker 1: game day from Bevo Boulevard. Mike Hardball-Harge and Mark Henry
- 29:23Speaker 1: down there. And, of course, Jake Herman, Eric Henry, Horns
- 29:28Speaker 1: 24-7 will be there as well.
- 29:29Speaker 5: So look forward to their coverage.
- 29:31Speaker 1: We'll pop in. I'll have a little visit from the
- 29:34Speaker 1: booth with them. And then our network pregame takes here
- 29:37Speaker 1: at 530. The kickoff is actually going to be 649 p.m.
- 29:42Speaker 1: 649 p.m. will be the kickoff for that one. All right.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Coming up next, it's inconceivable. Jake, we know what inconceivable
- 29:51Speaker 1: means on Friday, even though the University of Florida played
- 29:53Speaker 1: here last week and they're gone. That does not stand
- 29:56Speaker 1: in the way of what we deal with on Friday.
- 29:57Speaker 2: It's going to be hard to top last Friday's Florida
- 30:00Speaker 2: man file because.
- 30:01Speaker 3: That's where we're headed.
- 30:01Speaker 2: The Sunshine State, the most flaccid of the lower 48
- 30:04Speaker 2: to grab the low-hanging fruit.
- 30:06Speaker 1: That's Florida man coming up next on Sports Radio AM
- 30:10Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app. Second hour
- 30:25Speaker 1: of the program here on a Fire Me Up Friday
- 30:28Speaker 1: on Sports Radio AM 1300 The Zone. Craig Wade joined
- 30:31Speaker 1: by the producer, Jake Herman. Glad to be with you.
- 30:35Speaker 1: A couple of things are going to run down, and
- 30:37Speaker 1: then we're going to have one more World Series preview.
- 30:40Speaker 1: We'll have that since Game 1 of that takes place
- 30:43Speaker 1: tonight in Milwaukee. One thing, and it wasn't because I'd
- 30:47Speaker 1: forgotten about it, we were pretty busy. and didn't get
- 30:54Speaker 1: a chance to get to it. But I always like
- 30:56Speaker 1: to get to it, and I'm not going to forget
- 31:00Speaker 1: about it. And what we're talking about is the bottom 10.
- 31:04Speaker 1: We have to do that. You should know, by the way,
- 31:07Speaker 1: that Texas, which was in the bottom 10 last week,
- 31:13Speaker 1: is not in the bottom 10 this week. You see,
- 31:16Speaker 1: the way that Ryan McGee works that thing is, If
- 31:21Speaker 1: you're a team, like, especially from a Power Four conference,
- 31:26Speaker 1: and you're supposed to win and, you know, do all
- 31:28Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, and you don't, and you get surprised,
- 31:34Speaker 1: you do wind up, you know, in the bottom 10.
- 31:38Speaker 1: You might. There's a decent chance you might wind up
- 31:41Speaker 1: in the bottom 10. But unless you're just, you know,
- 31:46Speaker 1: all the way to the finish line. You're probably not
- 31:48Speaker 1: going to stand it because he moves on to get
- 31:52Speaker 1: another team. And this other team is also usually from
- 32:01Speaker 1: a Power Four conference. And, you know, so it's anyway,
- 32:07Speaker 1: that's part of it. And we'll get to that coming
- 32:10Speaker 1: up in a little bit. But before we get to that,
- 32:14Speaker 1: I wanted to get what's called get to what's called
- 32:16Speaker 1: elimination games in certain conferences. And one of them is
- 32:21Speaker 1: staring the Longhorns right in the face, as well as
- 32:23Speaker 1: the Ole Miss Rebels. See, what these elimination games are
- 32:27Speaker 1: all about is the elimination from contention for the college
- 32:32Speaker 1: football playoff, or at least realistic elimination from being able
- 32:39Speaker 1: to advance to the college football playoff. And I think
- 32:42Speaker 1: I saw this morning on SportsCenter, There was the, I
- 32:48Speaker 1: don't know, I don't think it's their football power index.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I don't think it's that, but I think it's something
- 32:54Speaker 1: like their computer probability if they don't, if they win
- 33:02Speaker 1: the game tomorrow against Ole Miss or if they lose
- 33:05Speaker 1: the game against Ole Miss. And I think it said
- 33:09Speaker 1: currently the Longhorn's chances to reach The college football playoff.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Right now, staying at 41%. If they win tomorrow, it
- 33:22Speaker 1: jumps to 52%. If they lose, it falls to 14%.
- 33:28Speaker 6: Yikes.
- 33:30Speaker 1: So that's what I mean, and that's what they mean.
- 33:34Speaker 1: And ESPN's not the only ones doing this. The Athletic
- 33:37Speaker 1: is doing it. Sports Illustrated is doing it. These deals were...
- 33:40Speaker 1: They're calling them elimination games.
- 33:43Speaker 5: So.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Because they're elimination games, you know, it's an important thing
- 33:50Speaker 1: to make sure you're handling your business. So, they're calling
- 33:54Speaker 1: it Elimination Day, ESPN is, in the SEC. So, they
- 34:02Speaker 1: point out that last week, the top four favorites... In
- 34:05Speaker 1: the SEC, it's that SP plus index. That's what they
- 34:10Speaker 1: use to figure out what your chances are of being
- 34:13Speaker 1: able to get into the playoff. And said the top
- 34:16Speaker 1: four favorites all lost. Georgia remains the favorite overall, but
- 34:21Speaker 1: they're just at 48% right now, which tells you how
- 34:25Speaker 1: difficult the SEC is. And I know a lot of
- 34:27Speaker 1: fans get tired of it. I think I saw something
- 34:29Speaker 1: on social media where somebody said, I'm tired of hearing
- 34:33Speaker 1: the Tom Herman rhetoric of winning is hard. I'm hearing
- 34:38Speaker 1: it everywhere. Now, he was one of the first ones
- 34:41Speaker 1: I used to hear say it pretty regularly. I heard
- 34:44Speaker 1: it in the NFL a lot, winning is hard. And
- 34:48Speaker 1: it is, whether fans want to accept it or not,
- 34:50Speaker 1: it is. But it really becomes paramount when you get
- 34:54Speaker 1: to this point.
- 34:56Speaker 2: When you get to face teams that are very much
- 35:00Speaker 2: capable of beating you on their best day, and you've
- 35:02Speaker 2: got to do it after facing two or three teams
- 35:04Speaker 2: like that in a row.
- 35:05Speaker 3: That's the difference.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. So Georgia remains the favorite overall. But Tennessee
- 35:12Speaker 1: is 12%. LSU is 12%. Ole Miss 10%. And so
- 35:19Speaker 1: one of the elimination games is definitely Ole Miss at Texas.
- 35:22Speaker 1: And they said it's a tale of two bye weeks following...
- 35:26Speaker 1: A humiliating 52-28 loss to Florida. Pete Golding's Rebels got
- 35:30Speaker 1: a week off to lick wounds and mend an increasingly
- 35:33Speaker 1: awful defense. They returned to action and beat Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt
- 35:36Speaker 1: has fallen way off from no longer having Diego Pavia.
- 35:41Speaker 1: So that helped as a stepping stone. And then they
- 35:44Speaker 1: had a really good home win against Missouri. And they
- 35:46Speaker 1: won those two games by a combined total of 83-20.
- 35:49Speaker 1: This week, that same week, Texas was off after moving
- 35:54Speaker 1: to 4-0. The Longhorns returned to action and suffered back-to-back,
- 35:59Speaker 1: as they put it, catastrophic upsets, first to Oklahoma, then
- 36:03Speaker 1: to Florida. Now, trends in momentum don't mean nearly as
- 36:07Speaker 1: much as we tend to think, but if they mean anything,
- 36:11Speaker 1: they skew drastically toward Ole Miss, according to ESPN's SP
- 36:15Speaker 1: Plus index. The Rebels also have a clear quarterback advantage.
- 36:19Speaker 1: Trinidad Chambliss has played remarkably controlled ball, producing a total
- 36:23Speaker 1: QBR over 80 in four straight starts and saving his
- 36:26Speaker 1: legs of late. He's taken few risks and has rushed
- 36:29Speaker 1: only seven times with one sack since the bye. He'll
- 36:32Speaker 1: probably run more in this one. Meanwhile, as you may
- 36:35Speaker 1: have heard, Arch Manning's play and confidence have plummeted. He's
- 36:40Speaker 1: 78th in total QBR since week one and has taken
- 36:43Speaker 1: 13 sacks with three interceptions in his last three starts.
- 36:48Speaker 1: He might even be playing for his job. Unlike Ole Miss,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Texas is a defense that didn't start playing well just
- 36:55Speaker 1: two weeks ago. With incredible defensive end Colin Simmons hurt, however,
- 37:00Speaker 1: Coordinator Will Muschamp might have to raise the risk profile
- 37:04Speaker 1: a bit. Can the horns contain Chambliss without Simmons wreaking havoc?
- 37:09Speaker 1: The line, believe it or not, favors Texas by three
- 37:12Speaker 1: and a half. The FBI projection, well, the SP Plus
- 37:17Speaker 1: projection is Texas by six and a half. And the FBI,
- 37:21Speaker 1: the Football Power Index projection, is Texas by 7.7.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Well, and according to those two metrics, Texas's losses these
- 37:30Speaker 2: last two weeks were complete anomalies. I mean, just by
- 37:34Speaker 2: looking at things like success rate, they think Texas lost
- 37:37Speaker 2: this game on three or four plays in each that
- 37:40Speaker 2: if you played 10 times, Texas might win seven, but
- 37:42Speaker 2: that's not how football works.
- 37:43Speaker 1: Right, right. It's on that given day, as we know. Anyway,
- 37:48Speaker 1: so that's an example of it. Here's the other elimination game,
- 37:50Speaker 1: Tennessee at South Carolina. Now, it said in August, and
- 37:55Speaker 1: this is Bill Connolly who wrote this, my take on
- 37:57Speaker 1: Tennessee was that the Vols would have an excellent run
- 37:59Speaker 1: game and major defensive potential with the addition of coordinator
- 38:02Speaker 1: Jim Knowles and some high upside transfers. But they had
- 38:05Speaker 1: major unknowns at quarterback where Josh Heupel was going with
- 38:08Speaker 1: blue chip freshman Faison Brandon. Seven games into 2026, the
- 38:12Speaker 1: Vols indeed have an excellent run game and defense, but
- 38:15Speaker 1: QB remains a mystery with Jordan McIntyre having replaced a
- 38:18Speaker 1: struggling Brandon. And so it goes on, talks about South
- 38:22Speaker 1: Carolina's run game is clicking now. The current line is
- 38:26Speaker 1: South Carolina minus two and a half. The game is
- 38:29Speaker 1: in Columbia. It flipped from minus two and a half
- 38:33Speaker 1: for Tennessee on Sunday. The SP plus projection is the
- 38:37Speaker 1: balls by five. The football power index projection is the
- 38:41Speaker 1: balls by basically three and a half is the way
- 38:44Speaker 1: that puts. Okay, so there is one. Then you have
- 38:48Speaker 1: LSU at Auburn. It says, the earthquake game, the barn burner. Yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 1: Auburn LSU can get weird, and Lane Kiffin hasn't even
- 38:55Speaker 1: been involved yet. Talk about Auburn upsetting Georgia last week,
- 39:00Speaker 1: despite getting pummeled statistically. LSU's defense ranks second in sack
- 39:05Speaker 1: rate without blitzing much. Edge rusher Prince Will, Yuman Mayalen,
- 39:09Speaker 1: the Mainer High School product, has eight sacks, and freshman
- 39:13Speaker 1: Deuce Geralds might already be the nation's best pass rushing tackle.
- 39:18Speaker 1: So anyway, it goes on. LSU is minus 7.5. The
- 39:21Speaker 1: projection has them by 11.2. The FPI projection has LSU
- 39:24Speaker 1: by 7.7%. Now, this game is on the plate. It
- 39:31Speaker 1: is at Auburn. Okay, so those are SEC elimination games.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Then they've got one. You'd say, how could this be
- 39:42Speaker 1: an elimination game? Consider where they're coming from in the
- 39:46Speaker 1: conference they're in. Houston at Utah. And game day is
- 39:51Speaker 1: going to be in Salt Lake City for that. And
- 39:55Speaker 1: it said only two games kick off after 8 o'clock
- 39:57Speaker 1: Saturday night, but they both could be outstanding. Houston visits
- 40:02Speaker 1: Utah on a top 15 battle with serious Big 12 implications.
- 40:06Speaker 1: And North Dakota State visits New Mexico in a major
- 40:10Speaker 1: game for the G6 hierarchy. So he said, I'm guessing
- 40:14Speaker 1: the atmosphere of both games will be spectacular. Houston's ranked 14th.
- 40:19Speaker 1: Utah's 10th. Current line, Utah minus six and a half.
- 40:24Speaker 1: The SP plus projection, Utah by 7.6. The FBI projection,
- 40:28Speaker 1: Utah by 6.1. And then North Dakota State and New Mexico.
- 40:31Speaker 1: There's no doubt this is an elimination game in terms
- 40:35Speaker 1: of thoughts of being the G6 representative. In fact, last night,
- 40:42Speaker 1: And Memphis' chances aren't great to be there. Their chances
- 40:47Speaker 1: are better to win the American, but they already have
- 40:49Speaker 1: two losses. And if they were to have lost last night,
- 40:53Speaker 1: and they were down 16-3 in the third quarter, and
- 40:56Speaker 1: had to come back, climb the hill all the way
- 40:59Speaker 1: until late in the game to force overtime, and then
- 41:01Speaker 1: they won it in overtime, they would have been eliminated.
- 41:05Speaker 1: They're still alive, although... you know, the odds are against it.
- 41:08Speaker 1: These two teams still have a shot, especially one might
- 41:12Speaker 1: say North Dakota State. But the game is in Albuquerque.
- 41:16Speaker 1: And if New Mexico can win, they kind of keep
- 41:18Speaker 1: their at-large G6 hopes alive. New Mexico is a four-and-a-half
- 41:25Speaker 1: point favorite. The projection, the SP Plus has them by
- 41:29Speaker 1: just under four. The FBI projection actually has them by
- 41:33Speaker 1: 11-and-a-half on that. So, Anyway, those are the elimination games there.
- 41:40Speaker 1: I'm not going to say upset, alert, but just keep
- 41:44Speaker 1: an eye on BYU at UCF. That game's in Orlando.
- 41:49Speaker 1: UCF has played pretty well at home this year. BYU
- 41:53Speaker 1: coming off that emotional win at home against Notre Dame,
- 41:56Speaker 1: and now they travel across the country to play in Orlando.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Just keep an eye on it. Road favorites. Indiana at Michigan.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Indiana by seven, according to the line. Iowa at Minnesota.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Iowa by six and a half, according to the line.
- 42:14Speaker 1: USC at Wisconsin. USC by three. I like Wisconsin. That's
- 42:19Speaker 1: my upset pick of the week. Okay. They played pretty
- 42:23Speaker 1: well this year. And we'll see how USC does with that. So, anyway,
- 42:28Speaker 1: those are some games to keep in mind. in addition to, obviously,
- 42:34Speaker 1: the Texas game. Speaking of Texas, coming up, we're going
- 42:36Speaker 1: to hear from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian. This is from, actually,
- 42:42Speaker 1: we're going to hear from him in the 4 o'clock hour.
- 42:44Speaker 1: And you might have missed it, the 2 o'clock hour
- 42:46Speaker 1: segment of Longhorn Weekly. But we've got some other, we've
- 42:49Speaker 1: got some pro football that we're going to get to
- 42:51Speaker 1: coming up next.
- 42:51Speaker 8: We'll do that.
- 42:53Speaker 1: And we've got some other topics and the World Series
- 42:56Speaker 1: to preview. All that and more when we continue on
- 42:58Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM 13 Under the Zone. All right, it
- 43:08Speaker 1: might be apropos to hit final countdown on a Fire
- 43:12Speaker 1: Me Up Friday anyway, just because it might fire you up.
- 43:15Speaker 1: But it probably makes even more sense to hit final
- 43:20Speaker 1: countdown when we're doing that countdown of the bottom 10,
- 43:24Speaker 1: which happens with Ryan McGee from ESPN, who does such
- 43:28Speaker 1: a great job. His inspirational thought of the week was, quote,
- 43:32Speaker 1: It seems we lose the game before we even start
- 43:35Speaker 1: to play. Who made these rules? We're so confused. Easily
- 43:39Speaker 1: led astray. Let me tell you that. Everything is everything.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Everything is everything. Everything is everything. Everything after winter must
- 43:49Speaker 1: come spring. Everything is everything. Yo, that's from Lauren Hill.
- 43:53Speaker 3: Maybe I should have come back with that.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Everything is everything. I always love where he He kind
- 43:59Speaker 1: of sets the scene about bottom 10 headquarters, about how
- 44:02Speaker 1: it's better. He's here at bottom 10 headquarters, located behind
- 44:05Speaker 1: the scrap heap where they toss all the old 0
- 44:07Speaker 1: for 5 college game day picks graphics before anyone can
- 44:11Speaker 1: go back and check them. We keep thinking about the
- 44:14Speaker 1: words that were set forth out of Austin after the
- 44:17Speaker 1: horns got hooked for the second straight weekend.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Good thing nobody's making graphics on our game day show.
- 44:23Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. So it's a good thing, I guess, that
- 44:27Speaker 1: that turned out that way. So anyway, he goes on and,
- 44:32Speaker 1: you know, he says, not the words that filled my
- 44:38Speaker 1: inbox and social media timelines after we had Texas in
- 44:42Speaker 1: the coveted fifth spot last week. Besides, those weren't so
- 44:45Speaker 1: much words as they were a series of, you know,
- 44:48Speaker 1: the cuss word type letters. and middle fingers raised between
- 44:54Speaker 1: the thumb and index. It's a different sign entirely. He said,
- 44:59Speaker 1: I'm speaking of the perturbed announcement from head coach Steve
- 45:03Speaker 1: Sarkeesian when he was asked about the upcoming week and
- 45:05Speaker 1: what would need to be evaluated. He said everything. When
- 45:08Speaker 1: inquiries were made, if that included his quarterback, he tersely
- 45:10Speaker 1: told the room, everything is everything. That's right. That was
- 45:14Speaker 1: the follow-up. I think the post came from Danny Davis
- 45:18Speaker 1: in the press conference when he said everything will be evaluated.
- 45:22Speaker 1: I mean, everything would seem to be the quarterback, right?
- 45:25Speaker 1: Include the quarterback. And when Danny asked that, he said,
- 45:28Speaker 1: everything is everything. So then every people, everybody's jumping on
- 45:31Speaker 1: Sark for having a terse response after he already answered
- 45:35Speaker 1: the question. And that's, I think that's part of what
- 45:37Speaker 1: has come down when folks are levying criticism, not at the,
- 45:45Speaker 1: you know, whether he needs to give play calling to
- 45:48Speaker 1: somebody else or hire an offensive coordinator. And I'm telling you,
- 45:51Speaker 1: that's not going to happen, certainly not going to happen
- 45:54Speaker 1: in mid-season. Let me just put it that way. It's
- 45:56Speaker 1: certainly not going to happen in mid-season, no matter how
- 45:59Speaker 1: you feel about it. That's not going to change in mid-season.
- 46:03Speaker 1: But now it's gotten to the point, and I saw this.
- 46:07Speaker 1: I saw this with Matt Brown and with Charlie Strong
- 46:10Speaker 1: and with Tom Herman, with John McEvick, where folks are line-iteming,
- 46:15Speaker 1: picking out lines, and being critical of the head coach
- 46:18Speaker 1: for his response to something. Like, for example, he's getting
- 46:21Speaker 1: a lot of heat for saying if Arch Manning had
- 46:25Speaker 1: a different name. He was answering a question. I can't
- 46:30Speaker 1: remember who asked him. It might have been Bob Luke.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Asked him, do you think if he had a different
- 46:36Speaker 1: last name other than Manning, he would be Trenton? And
- 46:38Speaker 1: so he was answering the question. Yeah, if his name
- 46:40Speaker 1: was whatever it was.
- 46:42Speaker 3: Joe Smith.
- 46:42Speaker 1: Joe Smith. People would say, oh, yeah, you know, so
- 46:45Speaker 1: on and so forth. Now, it wouldn't matter what the
- 46:47Speaker 1: name is because he's struggling. And Sark would be the
- 46:53Speaker 1: first to agree with you on that. Well, and people are.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Calling him out for going back and forth and saying
- 46:57Speaker 2: different messages. Well, yeah, Arch's play has gone back and forth.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So that's why this is a big weekend
- 47:02Speaker 1: all the way around. But anyway, in terms of the
- 47:06Speaker 1: bottom 10, he said, you know, after the everything is everything,
- 47:11Speaker 1: he said, also, anything... is anything. And that's where he
- 47:16Speaker 1: got to the everything is everything from the Lauren Hill thing.
- 47:18Speaker 1: He said, and if we learned anything from week seven
- 47:23Speaker 1: of college football, it's that anything goes. Because while the
- 47:27Speaker 1: rest of the world was watching the top 10 cave
- 47:29Speaker 1: in on itself, like Lauren Hill's accountants hard drive, we
- 47:33Speaker 1: here at the bottom 10, we're watching our hometown Charlotte
- 47:37Speaker 1: 49ers orchestrate their own giant record needle scratch musical masterpiece,
- 47:42Speaker 1: The Miseducation of Lincoln Financial Field.
- 47:45Speaker 3: Oh, come on, Ryan. Come on.
- 47:47Speaker 1: Well, with what they did up there, with what Temple did,
- 47:50Speaker 1: it's just a 21-point favorite to have that thing collapse.
- 47:55Speaker 1: It's amazing. Anyway. Okay, so here we go. The Americans,
- 48:01Speaker 1: Ryan McGee did tweet. He said, y'all are talking about
- 48:03Speaker 1: the bottom top 10 teams losing. Meanwhile, the soon-to-be former
- 48:06Speaker 1: bottom 10 teams taking care of business about Charlotte getting
- 48:10Speaker 1: its first win, beating Temple 38-31. So anyway, here's his 10.
- 48:14Speaker 1: I always go from backward to forward. Number 10, Temple
- 48:18Speaker 1: of Doom. That's the same Temple team that lost to Charlotte.
- 48:21Speaker 1: He said, apologies to Temple alums, Quinta Brunson and Kevin Agondi.
- 48:26Speaker 1: not to mention 2020 graduation speaker, Lauren Hill. But if
- 48:30Speaker 1: you lose to the former top bottom 10 team at home,
- 48:35Speaker 1: and it snaps that top bottom 10 team's nation-leading 15-game
- 48:42Speaker 1: losing streak, and you think you shouldn't be ranked here,
- 48:45Speaker 1: then in the words of another pair of Temple alums,
- 48:48Speaker 1: I can't go for that. No, no can do. Yeah,
- 48:51Speaker 1: that's right. All the notes.
- 48:52Speaker 3: Look at that.
- 48:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:53Speaker 1: So there you go. On his waiting list, is Mizzou State,
- 48:56Speaker 1: the Charlotte 1-6ers now, because they were 0-6ers, Baller State,
- 49:01Speaker 1: Sam Houston, we have a problem, they lost again on
- 49:03Speaker 1: Wednesday of this week, Old Dominions of Old Dominions, Southern Missed,
- 49:12Speaker 1: Washington State, replacing mid-level bowl games with first-round playoff games
- 49:16Speaker 1: that look like mid-level bowl games. No nine, Minute Rice.
- 49:22Speaker 1: It's the Rice House who are one in six. He said,
- 49:25Speaker 1: it's homecoming season, so it only feels right to see
- 49:29Speaker 1: these old friends returning to these rankings. That'll happen when
- 49:32Speaker 1: you lose six straight. If they lose three more, we
- 49:35Speaker 1: could be setting up a pillow fight of the week
- 49:37Speaker 1: of the year of the century on November 19th when
- 49:40Speaker 1: the other, other owls visit the other, other owls of
- 49:44Speaker 1: Temple of Doom. So could have that. I mean, how
- 49:48Speaker 1: many other owls are we talking about? We got Kennesaw State, right?
- 49:51Speaker 1: They're the owls.
- 49:53Speaker 5: Rice.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Temple.
- 49:56Speaker 5: F-A-U.
- 49:57Speaker 1: F-A-U.
- 49:58Speaker 5: There you go.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Number eight is acrimonious.
- 50:01Speaker 9: Acrimonious.
- 50:02Speaker 1: At one and six this week's undercard pillow fight of
- 50:06Speaker 1: the week will be when Akron zips over to waiting
- 50:10Speaker 1: Lister's state of Kent. Um, in related news of my
- 50:14Speaker 1: hotel last weekend, I found a card under my pillow.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Happy birthday, Janine. I'm assuming that was you, Janine, who
- 50:20Speaker 1: spilled red wine all over the comforter. I also left
- 50:22Speaker 1: a card, a comment card, zero stars, the bottom 10
- 50:25Speaker 1: of housekeeping. Ooh, that would be tough to get that
- 50:29Speaker 1: in your hotel room. Um, I had a hotel room
- 50:32Speaker 1: deal once, and it was at the Doubletree out here
- 50:36Speaker 1: on I-35. And this was the first year that I
- 50:41Speaker 1: was in the broadcast booth, 1992. So 34 years ago.
- 50:47Speaker 1: And in those days, Host Communications was the broadcast rights
- 50:55Speaker 1: holder for the University of Texas. And in those days,
- 50:57Speaker 1: they paid for the travel for their broadcaster. not the university.
- 51:02Speaker 1: So they had a hotel room because I was commuting
- 51:04Speaker 1: for all the games, and it was a night game.
- 51:06Speaker 1: And if it was a day game, I would drive
- 51:07Speaker 1: back or fly back, back to the Metroplex. But if
- 51:11Speaker 1: it was a night game, they would put me up
- 51:13Speaker 1: at a hotel. And that hotel was usually that Doubletree
- 51:16Speaker 1: on I-35. Very nice hotel. Been there, stayed there many times.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Not for a while. And I did find it kind
- 51:23Speaker 1: of poetic and weird some, I think, 18 or 16
- 51:28Speaker 1: years later when I was taking one of my kids... Well,
- 51:32Speaker 1: I wasn't doing it, but I was setting up the
- 51:34Speaker 1: limo service to take one of my kids down there
- 51:36Speaker 1: for a prom. But I get there one night after
- 51:40Speaker 1: a game. I get the key. I go up. I
- 51:45Speaker 1: get off the elevator. I go in, and this is
- 51:47Speaker 1: in the days before the key cards where you just
- 51:49Speaker 1: put the key in the lock and open the door.
- 51:51Speaker 1: I put the key in the lock, open the door.
- 51:53Speaker 1: And as the door opened, I saw a flash of flesh.
- 51:59Speaker 1: go by. Yeah. It was so quick. All I could
- 52:02Speaker 1: tell was like, like the side of a person who
- 52:04Speaker 1: was unclothed. And I heard, Hey, uh, and I went,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry. And I closed the door and I went
- 52:11Speaker 1: downstairs and I got off the elevator. And as I'm
- 52:14Speaker 1: walking toward the thing, I see the desk clerk running
- 52:17Speaker 1: toward me. I'm so sorry.
- 52:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:20Speaker 1: I gave you the wrong key to a room that
- 52:21Speaker 1: was occupied. I said, yeah, I've noticed. So then they
- 52:24Speaker 1: gave me another one. So that's the only really Absolutely
- 52:28Speaker 1: weird thing I've had happen with regard to that sort
- 52:31Speaker 1: of thing.
- 52:32Speaker 3: That's pretty good for the career you've had, the miles
- 52:34Speaker 3: you've logged.
- 52:34Speaker 1: No kidding. Number seven on the list was Boiling Green.
- 52:38Speaker 1: Boiling Green at two and five. The Brown Falcons were
- 52:41Speaker 1: on the bottom 10 waiting list, but like me on
- 52:43Speaker 1: the bench outside the Texas Roadhouse on a Saturday night,
- 52:46Speaker 1: as soon as the buzzer went off, they came charging
- 52:49Speaker 1: into the door and started stuffing their faces with rolls.
- 52:52Speaker 1: Only their buzzer was a buzz kill, a baller state
- 52:54Speaker 1: two-point conversion in overtime. It's a ball state had beaten them.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Number six, Sacramento State, and that's sack with a K,
- 53:01Speaker 1: like getting sacked. Sack State fell to 0-4 lifetime in Maction. See,
- 53:07Speaker 1: they joined the Mid-America Conference this year.
- 53:08Speaker 2: See, I always get confused with them in the Pac-12
- 53:10Speaker 2: because it's all the state schools.
- 53:12Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, that's true.
- 53:13Speaker 3: But they were in the MAC, you know, because of course, Sacramento, yeah.
- 53:16Speaker 1: A result that was supposed to set up a potential
- 53:19Speaker 1: pillow fight of the week of the year, but were
- 53:21Speaker 1: denied a long list of bottom 10 sentences that were likely...
- 53:24Speaker 1: To get me sent to HR when Ball State avoided
- 53:28Speaker 1: said PFWOY by beating Boiling Green. Number five is polling. Yep.
- 53:36Speaker 7: Yep.
- 53:37Speaker 1: As election day nears, voters are being flogged with polls
- 53:41Speaker 1: that will probably turn out to be totally wrong. For
- 53:43Speaker 1: college football fans, that's already old hat. Week seven turned
- 53:46Speaker 1: the AP top 25 into a coveted fifth spot slot machine.
- 53:51Speaker 1: I would say go home. Top 25 voters, you're drunk.
- 53:55Speaker 1: But then again, I write the bottom 10 every week
- 53:57Speaker 1: using only one hand because I'm holding a bottle of
- 53:59Speaker 1: amber liquid in the other.
- 54:00Speaker 3: There you go.
- 54:01Speaker 1: Number four, Kennesaw Mountain Land Estate. It's Kennesaw State. That
- 54:06Speaker 1: says owls. Continuing to speak of pillow fights of the week,
- 54:09Speaker 1: the other owls lost last week's edition. falling via last-second
- 54:14Speaker 1: field goal by then ninth-ranked Mizzou State. Hey, remember when
- 54:18Speaker 1: last second actually meant the last second? Ah, the good
- 54:21Speaker 1: old days. Am I right, Michigan and Notre Dame?
- 54:23Speaker 3: Yeah, who's with me?
- 54:25Speaker 1: Number three, you tepid. One and six. Speaking of not
- 54:29Speaker 1: getting too far ahead of ourselves. Have you noticed where
- 54:31Speaker 1: the season ends for the minors just before Thanksgiving? At
- 54:34Speaker 1: Northern Illinois. The only time this game will be bigger
- 54:39Speaker 1: is when it becomes a first-round game in the next
- 54:41Speaker 1: wave of expansion of the college football playoff. By the way,
- 54:43Speaker 1: Northern Illinois is hosting Hawaii this week, which is the
- 54:46Speaker 1: longest travel distance for a conference game in college football.
- 54:51Speaker 3: Surely in college football.
- 54:52Speaker 1: History, right?
- 54:53Speaker 7: Well.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, because it does outpace, say, USC or
- 54:57Speaker 1: UCLA going to Rutgers. It does outpace that. Number two,
- 55:01Speaker 1: ULM pronounced, um, they're 0-6. Um, speaking of pillow fights
- 55:07Speaker 1: of the week, um, aren't we all that, um, interested
- 55:11Speaker 1: in this week's trip to Troy because, um, Southern Mist
- 55:15Speaker 1: is coming to town on, um, Homeoween.
- 55:19Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of fans will be dressed as empty
- 55:21Speaker 3: seats on Homeoween.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and number one is Northern Ill Ugg Noise 0
- 55:27Speaker 1: and 6. You know that when the other Huskies made
- 55:30Speaker 1: their move from the Mack to the Mountain West, a
- 55:32Speaker 1: big part of the pitch was now we get to
- 55:34Speaker 1: go to Hawaii just as it's getting super cold. Then
- 55:37Speaker 1: imagine this week in Honolulu as the Warriors were preparing
- 55:40Speaker 1: for the Pillow Fight of the Week. Now we have
- 55:42Speaker 1: to go to Illinois just as it's getting super cold. So,
- 55:47Speaker 1: There is your bottom 10. I guarantee you.
- 55:52Speaker 2: I don't guarantee you because it's hard to predict these things.
- 55:54Speaker 5: Yes.
- 55:54Speaker 2: We might see a game like that on SVP's Bad
- 55:57Speaker 2: Beats Monday night. Just saying.
- 55:59Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:59Speaker 1: Good chance of that. Okay. Let's hear some NFL. The
- 56:02Speaker 1: Texans are going for three straight wins when they play
- 56:05Speaker 1: the Giants on Sunday.
- 56:06Speaker 7: C.J.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Stroud, the Texans quarterback. was talking about now, you know,
- 56:11Speaker 1: getting Tank Dell back and obviously making the trade with
- 56:14Speaker 1: Marvin Harrison Jr. coming in. Nico Collins is back. How
- 56:17Speaker 1: do you manage a crowded wide receiver room?
- 56:20Speaker 11: Like you said, I've been in this situation before and
- 56:23Speaker 11: I don't think it's, it's not easy, but it's also,
- 56:25Speaker 11: I think it's good because now like you can't really
- 56:28Speaker 11: just focus in on Nico and then you can't really
- 56:31Speaker 11: just focus in on Tank or whatever it's been in
- 56:33Speaker 11: the past. And I think there are a lot of
- 56:35Speaker 11: different ways that we can, you know, move the ball and,
- 56:38Speaker 11: create explosives and use everybody. And I think if you
- 56:41Speaker 11: watch the bulk of my, my, my career, I've been
- 56:44Speaker 11: able to like use a lot of guys and throw
- 56:46Speaker 11: to a lot of different receivers throughout games. Um, so
- 56:49Speaker 11: I don't, I don't, at least I try not to be,
- 56:51Speaker 11: you know, like, um, picky on who I throw to,
- 56:54Speaker 11: you know, if you're open, I try to try my
- 56:56Speaker 11: best to get you the ball. Um, and you know,
- 56:58Speaker 11: there's times when I miss people too. So, um, I
- 57:00Speaker 11: just like, I would like for everybody to be patient,
- 57:02Speaker 11: you know, and not to, but we've never, I haven't
- 57:05Speaker 11: had that from anybody thus far. Um, And everybody really, like,
- 57:08Speaker 11: the room has really been good.
- 57:10Speaker 6: Like, at practice, they're all talking to each other, helping
- 57:13Speaker 6: each other out.
- 57:14Speaker 11: And it's a cool thing to see because there's a
- 57:17Speaker 11: lot of talent in that room. But definitely don't want,
- 57:19Speaker 11: you know, that could be something that the outside can, like,
- 57:22Speaker 11: push on that room. But I believe that they've been
- 57:24Speaker 11: able to, you know, block that out and really just
- 57:27Speaker 11: focus in on one another and help one another.
- 57:30Speaker 1: One of those wide receivers is Tank Dell. And he
- 57:33Speaker 1: talked about how, as he fought his way back from injury,
- 57:36Speaker 1: the support he's received from the Texans organization.
- 57:39Speaker 5: I'm grateful for it.
- 57:40Speaker 8: I'm thankful, man.
- 57:41Speaker 1: And I'm so excited.
- 57:42Speaker 12: I'm so happy that I got D'Amico, even Nick, my
- 57:47Speaker 12: receiver coach Ben, and everyone in the staff, especially the
- 57:50Speaker 12: trainers like Roe and my RTF girls and everybody who
- 57:55Speaker 12: contributed to me getting back to where I am. The
- 57:58Speaker 12: whole time, you know, D'Amico was calling me during the offseason, like,
- 58:03Speaker 12: take as much time as you need. When you're ready,
- 58:05Speaker 12: we ready. Like, just get yourself together to be who
- 58:08Speaker 12: you are, man. And I'm here for you every step
- 58:10Speaker 12: of the way. That's what D'Amico was preaching to me.
- 58:12Speaker 12: So he gave me the confidence and made me, like,
- 58:16Speaker 12: he made me not stress, you know what I'm saying?
- 58:18Speaker 1: Like, it was just, it's awesome to have that.
- 58:20Speaker 5: So it was good.
- 58:21Speaker 1: Then you have the Cowboys, who, like the Texans, are 2-4.
- 58:25Speaker 1: But unlike the Texans... who started 0-4 and now have
- 58:28Speaker 1: won back-to-back games. The Cowboys were 2-2 and now have
- 58:32Speaker 1: lost back-to-back games. They go to Philadelphia to play on
- 58:36Speaker 1: Monday night. And Quinnen Williams, the Cowboys' outstanding defensive lineman,
- 58:41Speaker 1: was asked, is the playoff urgency increasing for this team?
- 58:45Speaker 1: Not at all.
- 58:45Speaker 7: Not at all. Right now we've got a lot of
- 58:46Speaker 7: stuff we need to fix, especially on the defensive side.
- 58:48Speaker 7: I haven't been playing. to the standard that I want
- 58:51Speaker 7: to be able to play to be able to be
- 58:52Speaker 7: a game changer so all that stuff right now is
- 58:54Speaker 7: on the front focus on my mind and I'm doing
- 58:56Speaker 7: the things that we know we can do each and
- 58:58Speaker 7: every day to get better and each and every Sunday
- 59:00Speaker 7: to win football games.
- 59:01Speaker 1: You know another reason why the playoff urgency hasn't increased
- 59:04Speaker 1: because they're in the NFC East where the Giants lead
- 59:07Speaker 1: with a 3-2-1 record and think about this if the
- 59:09Speaker 1: Texans beat the Giants, the Giants will still be in
- 59:12Speaker 1: first place at 3-3-1, no matter what happens with Cowboys-Eagles.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Because the winner of that game would be, what, 3-4, right? Yep,
- 59:24Speaker 1: and this is one of those games where, one of
- 59:26Speaker 1: those divisions, where... You could have somebody like the 2020
- 59:30Speaker 1: Washington football team. Just diagnosis by elimination. It could happen.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Javante Williams, the Cowboys running back. A lot of questions
- 59:41Speaker 1: have been asked of Brian Schottenheimer this week about how
- 59:43Speaker 1: do you get the running game going? Where has the
- 59:45Speaker 1: running game been? And Williams has asked, is the offense
- 59:47Speaker 1: getting frustrated by these things?
- 59:49Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, it's very frustrating knowing the guys that
- 59:52Speaker 13: we got and how hard we worked throughout the week.
- 59:54Speaker 8: We know what we're capable of.
- 59:56Speaker 1: We just got to go out.
- 59:56Speaker 5: Like I said, we just got to go out and
- 59:58Speaker 5: show the world.
- 59:59Speaker 1: Okay. So there you are with that. All right. The
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: Cowboys game on Monday night can be heard on 98.1
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: FM KVET. That comes your way, coverage beginning at 6
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: o'clock to kick off around 7.20. And the Texans game
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: this weekend only can be heard on 103.1 FM. Normally,
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: it's here on 13 Under the Zone, but because we
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: have the Texas women's basketball game against UCLA Sunday afternoon
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: at 1 o'clock, the Texans game will be on 103.1 FM,
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: and you can listen on the iHeartRadio app as well.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: All right, up next, Some more World Series preview. Brewers, Rays,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: that's next. Yeah, we know. It's an instrumental version of
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: Everything is Everything there with Lauryn Hill. There's specific reasons
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: why we're rolling out the instrumental version.
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: Well, this is actually another Lauryn Hill cut that fires
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: you up a little more than that one.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: This is doo-wop, that thing.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: Which also is the instrumental for a very specific reason.
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: Yeah, we can't air some of that.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: Yeah. But we can let you sample the music background
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: on that. And that's good enough. Here on a Fire
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: Me Up Friday. Okay. Are you fired up for the
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: World Series? Maybe not. No, it's Milwaukee.
- 1:01:19Speaker 5: It's Tampa.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: Oh, come on.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: Who are we kidding?
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: We got to get fired up for this World Series, Craig.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: You know, here's the thing that I find interesting. You
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: will read... The annual stuff that comes out every year,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: if it doesn't have the marquee teams on it. Now,
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: the last two years, the Dodgers had been in it.
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: But a perfect example is 2023. Rangers and Diamondbacks. And
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: it was all the lamenting about, oh, this will be terrible.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: This will be in the dumper, ratings-wise. cares about that.
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: The regular rank and file fan, you either watch it
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: or you don't. It doesn't, you know, my mom used
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: to say, God rest her soul, that she always watched
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: the World Series. Now, my mom grew up in inner
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: city Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of Italian immigrants.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: And she used to say that she, you know, in
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: those days, in the 50s, In New York, they had
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: three baseball teams. In the 40s and 50s, they had
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: three baseball teams, had the Giants and Dodgers in the
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: National League, and of course, the Yankees in the American League.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: And she went to some ballgames on occasion. She dated
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: a guy who was a Brooklyn Dodger season ticket holder.
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: Imagine that. Maybe that's where the Dodger thing seeped into me.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I don't know. But she said, I didn't go to
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: many ballgames. I'd go on occasion. And Not many games
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: were on television back then. You know, you mainly listened
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: to the radio. So she didn't really do much of that.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: But she said, but you know what? I always watched
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: the World Series because the World Series was the ultimate,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: the final, you know, the final step to a world champion.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: So maybe you're not a Brewers fan. Maybe you're not
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: a race fan. Or maybe it's just the opposite because
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: I've seen this too. From those who said that 99%
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: of the world was cheering for the Brewers to beat
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: the Dodgers. I get that. I understand that.
- 1:03:13Speaker 3: That, by the way, is why the Dodgers are good
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: for baseball.
- 1:03:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: So you've got to have some villainy in there, right?
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: And with the Rays. Now, the Rays and Guardians, it
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: was a little bit different because, you know, it was Cleveland.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: You kind of felt sorry. Just like you felt sorry
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: last night for Cleveland, by the way. 29-point lead on
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: the Sixers, and they lose the game. The largest lead
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: ever blown in an NBA game in what's called the
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: play-by-play era since they started keeping track of when each
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: basket was made.
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: That was 97-98.
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: So we're talking 30 years.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: Maybe LeBron's last win in Cleveland?
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: We don't know.
- 1:03:51Speaker 3: Could be a historic one.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. So we'll see about that. That game was
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: in Philly, though, wasn't it, last night?
- 1:03:58Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 1:03:58Speaker 6: Never mind.
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: Yeah, it was in Philly last night. So he'll have
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: another shot there to win.
- 1:04:02Speaker 7: So.
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: Anyway, in.
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: Fact, this is how I know that it was in Philly.
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: It was a great soundbite from LeBron after the game
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: talking about how he said, yeah, it was great, you know,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: from the bad part where you're getting booed to the end.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: And he goes, which we deserved to the end when
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: we win. Welcome to Philadelphia, LeBron. Yeah, right. So he
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: gets it. He understands that. So anyway, you have two
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: teams that may be a lot of, glamour baseball watchers
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: that want to see the Yankees or the Dodgers or
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: the Red Sox or whatever. Those teams aren't there. But
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: those who follow baseball know what a really good matchup
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: this is between the Brewers. and the Rays.
- 1:04:50Speaker 3: These are the two best teams. There's no doubt about that.
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: No doubt about it. They had the best records in
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: both the National and American League, and they were the
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: one seed. This is only the sixth time that both
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: one seeds have made it all the way through. Okay,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Pat Murphy is the Brewers manager, and he was asked
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: about facing this Rays team and the similarities between the two.
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Know the american league and i just don't know the
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: american league that well you know we prepare for that
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: team that week and then it's on.
- 1:05:22Speaker 5: To the next you know you only play him once
- 1:05:24Speaker 5: usually um.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: I respect to have watching what i've watched this week
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: i mean i respect the hell out of them um
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: they've done an incredible job of winning baseball games um
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: similarities on the field and that kind of mean Yeah,
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: I mean, they win a lot of games. They've got
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: some real talent. They try to beat you in different ways,
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: which is similar.
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: I don't know about the organization.
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: I know Arnold was there, so I give him a
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: hard time every time he mentions that he signed Snell
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: or whatever. But I don't know the similarities in the organizations. Obviously,
- 1:06:05Speaker 4: Tampa Bay has been good before, so.
- 1:06:08Speaker 5: It's not.
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: I respect him. And Kevin Cash, I've known for a
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: long time. Not so much personally, but I've just respected
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: the job he's done in that organization.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Now, it'll be an interesting thing when Freddie Peralta takes
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: the mound. Of course, former Milwaukee Brewer, now with the Rays.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Fastball Freddie, as they know him. And Murphy was asked
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: for his thoughts on Peralta's turnaround and the memories he
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: had of his debut.
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: I love that kid, man. I just do.
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: If you're around him every day, this kid is just joyful.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: It's just a beautiful spirit that comes to do his job.
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: He doesn't look at himself as better than others. He's
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: just a great teammate.
- 1:06:48Speaker 5: Just a matter of.
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: Time before Freddie broke through because he was great for
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: us for so many years. I still remember his first
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: game in 17 against the Rockies.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: Was it 17?
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: Against the Rockies, he threw one pitch, just threw a
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: high cutter, high cutter, high cutter. And the Rockies had
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: a great lineup. Blackman and Arenado and the rest of
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: that crew was really good. And anyways, he dominated in
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: his first outing. And his parents had came in to
- 1:07:17Speaker 4: see him pitch in AAA. First time they were ever
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: going to see him pitch. Our AAA was in Colorado Springs.
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: We just happened to be in Colorado that same weekend.
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: He had to call his parents and say, no, you
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: still fly in, but I'm pitching up the road.
- 1:07:31Speaker 5: I mean, what a story. And then he dominated.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: So, like, this kid has been making great stories like
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: that ever since. Yeah, what he's done in Tampa is, yeah,
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: Velo's ticked up. The Vert's ticked up. You know, it's awesome.
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: Love it.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: So there's some thoughts from Pat Murphy, the Brewers manager.
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: We'll hear from Kevin Cash, the race skipper, coming up
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: when we continue on 13 Under the Zone. Third and
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: final hour of the program here on Sports Radio, AM
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone, here on a Fire Me Up Friday.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us. One more hour of
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: the program to go. Craig Way, joined by the producer,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Jake Herman. Coming up, If you didn't hear it in
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: the 2 o'clock hour or if you didn't hear it
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: last night on Longhorn Weekly, we had a really good
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: show last night with Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkeesian, who
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: our special guest, Quan Cosby, was with us as well.
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: We do that on Thursday nights at 7 o'clock. And
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: we pull an excerpt from that to bring to you
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: on Friday kind of a game plan type of segment,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: looking at the opponent segment. And so it dials in,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: in this case, on the Ole Miss Rebels. We brought
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: it to you at two o'clock hour, but in case
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: you missed it, we're doing it again in the four
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: o'clock hours when we normally do it as well. So,
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: and by the way, the reason we've done that, I've
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: gotten some correspondence over the past several weeks. There's some
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: people who told me, hey, I'm out in my car
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour or the two o'clock hour,
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: but I'm back in the office at four o'clock hour
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: and I'm not where I can hear you. And some
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: other people said, hey, the other way around, you know,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: I can't, you know, I can't hear it one time.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Can you play it in the other time when I'm
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: around the radio? So that's part of the reason for
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: doing that. We aim to please on that, just like
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: giving away that pair of tickets we did in the
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: two o'clock hour. We try to be your local community
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Longhorn flagship radio station. Okay, so that's coming up as well.
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: And we're going to hear some more from the Cowboys
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: as well. But right now, the Texans have... I wouldn't
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: say they're all the way back. After all, they are 2-4,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: but they were 0-4, and they won back-to-back games. They
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: do play a division leader on Sunday. Yes, I know
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: the New York Giants are 3-2-1, but it is a
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: division leader, and they're playing them at home at Reliance
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Stadium in Houston. So they're starting to feel better about things,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: and not only are they feeling better about things, their
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: quarterback was the AFC Player of the Week. It was C.J. Stroud.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: And he feels good about a lot of things, not
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: the least of which is getting Tank Dell back in
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: the receiver rotation.
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm very excited.
- 1:10:24Speaker 11: You know, I'm just thrilled to, you know, have my
- 1:10:26Speaker 11: brother back out there with me and just really happy
- 1:10:27Speaker 11: for him and his family. And, you know, just all
- 1:10:30Speaker 11: the work he put in, you know, it wasn't, you know,
- 1:10:32Speaker 11: easy and it took a long time. But, you know,
- 1:10:35Speaker 11: it was perfect timing. And I think, you know, just
- 1:10:37Speaker 11: his faith has grown. You know, his just.
- 1:10:41Speaker 5: You know, his tough skin. I think he's, you know,
- 1:10:43Speaker 5: defined a lot of odds, so I'm just.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: Very proud of him. All right, but dude, you're the
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: AFC Offensive Player of the Week. How about that?
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: Yeah, it's a blessing.
- 1:10:50Speaker 11: You know, I'm grateful, but like I said, I just
- 1:10:53Speaker 11: like to, you know, flush the successes and the failures,
- 1:10:56Speaker 11: you know, as quick as I can. Of course, I'm
- 1:10:57Speaker 11: going to enjoy it, and, you know, I'm very grateful
- 1:10:59Speaker 11: for the honor. I think it's something that you can't
- 1:11:01Speaker 11: just overlook, but also you can't harp on it. You know,
- 1:11:05Speaker 11: it's a great opponent coming in here, and, you know,
- 1:11:07Speaker 11: if you play around with them, you know, they've done
- 1:11:09Speaker 11: some good things on defense, so You know, they're a
- 1:11:11Speaker 11: tough team, so we got to, you know, flush our game,
- 1:11:14Speaker 11: which was, you know, emotional, you know, a rollercoaster game. But,
- 1:11:16Speaker 11: you know, got to be able to flush that and
- 1:11:18Speaker 11: prepare this week. Like, you know, it's a new week
- 1:11:20Speaker 11: and we want to go 1-0.
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: You know, we were talking about the Texans all of
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: a sudden getting healthy again. in the receiver room, getting
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Tank Dell back. Of course, Nico Collins came back the
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: week before, and they made that trade with the Cardinals
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: to get Marvin Harrison Jr. He had some limited duty
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: last week. So how does the Texans build on that
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: debut of a week ago?
- 1:11:41Speaker 5: Yeah, just grow.
- 1:11:42Speaker 11: I think, you know, I think, you know, he's done
- 1:11:45Speaker 11: a great job. Just his mindset, you know, he's always
- 1:11:48Speaker 11: been a hard worker. But I think just his ability
- 1:11:51Speaker 11: to be in the building. He's always in here and
- 1:11:53Speaker 11: trying to learn and asking different people, you know, different, you.
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: Know, aspects of the offense.
- 1:11:57Speaker 11: So, you know, hopefully we get him some more touches and,
- 1:12:00Speaker 11: you know, more opportunities to, you know, make some plays.
- 1:12:01Speaker 8: And he looked great today at practice.
- 1:12:04Speaker 10: All right.
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: You heard him a few moments ago reference the Giants
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: and what they're doing on defense. So how about facing
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: that New York Giant defense?
- 1:12:10Speaker 8: I think their D-line is really good.
- 1:12:12Speaker 11: You know, I think, you know, Sally, you know, Brian
- 1:12:15Speaker 11: Burns went down. I think he's a heck of a player.
- 1:12:17Speaker 11: But also, you know, Abdul Carter, you know, really good
- 1:12:20Speaker 11: young talent. Kayvon Thibodeau has been doing a good job.
- 1:12:23Speaker 5: DJ Reedert.
- 1:12:24Speaker 11: Great player for a long time. Two stud linebackers, you know,
- 1:12:28Speaker 11: and then they got a really good back end. You know,
- 1:12:31Speaker 11: Devon does a really good job playing a back end, Newsome. And,
- 1:12:34Speaker 11: you know, I thought Banks has been playing really good.
- 1:12:37Speaker 11: So they do a good job and they play on
- 1:12:38Speaker 11: a string. You know, they do a lot of different
- 1:12:39Speaker 11: coverages and blitzes. So, you know, I think they're a
- 1:12:43Speaker 11: great team and definitely got to be prepared because, you know,
- 1:12:45Speaker 11: they've shown some good things on tape.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: So in getting the guys back and getting them ready
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: to go, Tank Dell, of course, is getting ready to go.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: And he was asked, what are your expectations for your
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: first game back?
- 1:13:01Speaker 8: Go out there and have fun, man.
- 1:13:03Speaker 12: First game back, I'm just trying to go out there
- 1:13:05Speaker 12: and have fun. Of course, y'all know I'm competitive, so
- 1:13:07Speaker 12: I want to make some plays, of course, a lot
- 1:13:09Speaker 12: of plays. But my main thing is, man, just live
- 1:13:14Speaker 12: in that moment, be where my feet are, and have fun.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: And fly around and just try to be who I am.
- 1:13:19Speaker 8: Not try.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: Be who I am, you know. Okay.
- 1:13:21Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: That's a good thing there. And, again, the Texans game
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: will be Sunday at noon. You can hear it on 103.1
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: FM if you're out and about. 103.1 FM, Austin's 80s station.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: We'll have the Texas women's basketball game for you here
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: on The Zone. 1245 pregame start time, 1 o'clock tip-off
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: from the HEB Center in Cedar Park. as Texas will
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: host the defending national champion UCLA Bruins. We'll have that
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: for you here on The Zone. But again, the Texans
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: game is on 103.1 FM. Let me jump back to
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: the World Series. We heard from Pat Murphy last hour,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Brewers manager. Now, Kevin Cash, the Tampa Bay
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: Rays skipper, was asked, what were the factors in deciding
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: to go with the starting rotation of with Nick Martinez
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: going for Tampa Bay in game one. What all went
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: into that decision?
- 1:14:17Speaker 14: I think we prioritized Drew getting an extra day. He's
- 1:14:20Speaker 14: had a pretty thick workload here. We've relied on him heavily.
- 1:14:23Speaker 14: We know when he takes the ball, we're trying to
- 1:14:25Speaker 14: get the full pitch allotment out of him. With Freddie,
- 1:14:30Speaker 14: Freddie's workload in the CS was unique that we did
- 1:14:33Speaker 14: ask him to come out of the bullpen for an
- 1:14:35Speaker 14: inning in between starts and felt like.
- 1:14:39Speaker 8: How much of a toll does that take?
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:14:41Speaker 14: I thought he threw a really good ball game in
- 1:14:43Speaker 14: game six, but I did think that towards the end
- 1:14:45Speaker 14: of that game, the velocities and stuff remained the same.
- 1:14:48Speaker 14: The command took a little bit of a dip. And
- 1:14:52Speaker 14: when Nick pitches, we win. So excited to hand Nick
- 1:14:55Speaker 14: the ball game one, and we'll go from there.
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: Of course, Tampa Bay is going to have to deal
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: with the Miz, Jacob Mizorowski, who when we had Gene
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Watson on yesterday, we were talking about the fact that
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: You had the player with the highest average bat speed
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: in Major League Baseball this season, Junior Caminero of the Rays,
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: going up against the unquestioned number one guy in terms
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: of fastball speed, velocity, and that's Miz, who averaged over
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: 100 miles per hour on fastballs this season. So what's
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: the approach that the Rays have in going up against
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: The Miz in game number one tonight.
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: Everybody's going to be pretty amped up.
- 1:15:41Speaker 14: I think we're going to try to do everything we
- 1:15:43Speaker 14: can to stay within ourselves and stay in the zone.
- 1:15:47Speaker 14: As soon as you start expanding out of the zone
- 1:15:49Speaker 14: with a guy as special and talented as Mizorowski is,
- 1:15:53Speaker 14: it really works in his favor to have those lengthy at-bats,
- 1:15:57Speaker 14: try to get the fastball down. That's very much easier
- 1:16:00Speaker 14: said than done because he's got so much ride and
- 1:16:02Speaker 14: carry through the zone.
- 1:16:04Speaker 6: But, I mean, I know they're actively talking.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Yeah, and remember we were talking about how this is
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: Milwaukee's first trip to the World Series in 44 years.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: The Rays were in six years ago. Do you remember
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: that was the pandemic year? when they can only play
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: 60 games. The Dodgers won that World Series. They beat
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: Tampa Bay in six games. Cash was the skipper for
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: Tampa Bay back then. Does that World Series appearance help
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: him or anybody else that's still with the team in
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: any way?
- 1:16:31Speaker 14: Yeah, maybe a little bit. The 2020 World Series was
- 1:16:35Speaker 14: kind of a blur. The whole postseason was a blur.
- 1:16:38Speaker 14: I'm a heck of a lot happier we're in this
- 1:16:41Speaker 14: situation now, coming on the other side of that. Those games,
- 1:16:45Speaker 14: they're intense. There's a lot of anxiety in them. But
- 1:16:47Speaker 14: I felt that same intensity and anxiety in the ALCS
- 1:16:51Speaker 14: just two or three days ago. But excited to go
- 1:16:54Speaker 14: and watch our guys do their thing over the next
- 1:16:57Speaker 14: week to 10 days.
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Okay, so he made reference to coming through that very
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: tense ALCS with Cleveland. Will handling things at this stage
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: at the World Series be any different in the previous rounds?
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: I don't think so. Other than that, we're just getting
- 1:17:12Speaker 6: closer to the end here.
- 1:17:13Speaker 14: And the magnitude of these games, as much as they
- 1:17:16Speaker 14: were in the DS to the CS, they're even elevated now.
- 1:17:20Speaker 6: But I really have been.
- 1:17:22Speaker 14: incredibly impressed with the way our entire roster has handled
- 1:17:26Speaker 14: you know the intensity of all of these games that
- 1:17:29Speaker 14: we've played I know they're excited and they'll be pretty
- 1:17:32Speaker 14: amped up and tomorrow will probably be really really loud
- 1:17:35Speaker 14: in the other team's favor but uh we'll take that
- 1:17:39Speaker 14: all in and know that we're going to return the
- 1:17:40Speaker 14: favor when we get back to the trop for game.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: Three all right um great story about Freddy Peralta was
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: with the Brewers did a great job there signs with
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: the Mets things go horribly wrong. And then the Rays
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: pick him up at midseason, and boy, did he turn
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: things around.
- 1:17:55Speaker 14: He had a unique three months, in my opinion. He's
- 1:17:58Speaker 14: had a great major league career. His three months or
- 1:18:01Speaker 14: four months in New York didn't go the way that
- 1:18:03Speaker 14: he had probably wanted or the way he had performed
- 1:18:07Speaker 14: his first five years. Getting to manage him, him walking
- 1:18:10Speaker 14: in the door, I got a text or a phone
- 1:18:12Speaker 14: call from Willie Adamas and said, you're getting one of
- 1:18:14Speaker 14: the best guys in baseball coming here. And he walks in,
- 1:18:17Speaker 14: he's got a smile ear to ear on his face.
- 1:18:19Speaker 14: I mean, I give Freddie all the credit for being
- 1:18:22Speaker 14: a really good pitcher and being vulnerable enough to say,
- 1:18:25Speaker 14: you know, I wasn't comfortable doing some things.
- 1:18:28Speaker 6: And I want to get back to my strengths.
- 1:18:29Speaker 14: And he guided that throughout this entire two months he's
- 1:18:32Speaker 14: been with us and then took off in September and
- 1:18:35Speaker 14: has continued to take off here in October.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: And then one more from Kevin Cash. You've heard me
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: talk about this, the way— and not an original thought, by
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: the way— many baseball people. smart people that know the
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: game really well, like Gene Watson was on with us,
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: talk about how these two kind of mirror each other
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: in some ways. I've heard Tampa Bay described as Milwaukee light.
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: I always say that sounds like a beer, but they
- 1:19:03Speaker 1: play the game in much the same fashion the Brewers do.
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: in how they play really sound defense, pitch well, great closer.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: They do have more pop in the bat because of Caminero,
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: and they hit more home runs, but the Brewers can
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: create more runs. For Kevin Cash, is there a pride
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: in playing the style that his club does as well
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: as Milwaukee?
- 1:19:26Speaker 14: There's pride into doing everything you can to win games.
- 1:19:29Speaker 14: And if we had a club that was built with
- 1:19:31Speaker 14: a bunch of boppers, we probably wouldn't be bunting.
- 1:19:34Speaker 6: And stealing bases either.
- 1:19:35Speaker 14: But our club's built differently in comparison to some other clubs.
- 1:19:39Speaker 6: But this.
- 1:19:41Speaker 14: group here does everything on a nightly basis just to
- 1:19:44Speaker 14: win the game and that's kind of what has stood
- 1:19:46Speaker 14: out and you know from afar i don't know the
- 1:19:48Speaker 14: brewers that well we saw them in april for three
- 1:19:51Speaker 14: games it certainly seems like they do very similar things
- 1:19:55Speaker 14: with with their lineup their construction and the athleticism that
- 1:19:58Speaker 14: they show on a.
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Nightly basis yeah uh in case and we mentioned this
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: the other day somebody tweeted this out the brewers and
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: Rays began the season against one another, and they will
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: end the season against one another. They had a season-opening
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: three-game series at Milwaukee, won two out of three in
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: that one. So game one tonight, game two tomorrow, then
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: an off day on Sunday for travel, and then it
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: goes Monday, Tuesday. If they go to a fifth game,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: it would be Wednesday, then they would be off, and
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: then Friday, Saturday again to close it out the next
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: week if it works out like that. All right, coming
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: up next, We're going to hear, and we'll hear some
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: more from Pat Murphy, the brewer skipper, coming up later
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: this hour. But up next, the excerpt from last night's
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: Longhorn Weekly with Coach Sark talking about Ole Miss. And
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: we'll also hear, independent of that segment from the show,
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: we'll also hear from the coach of the Ole Miss Rebels.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: We'll hear from Pete Golding when we continue on Sports
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Radio AM 13 Under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: I see what you're doing there, Jay Kerman, little Rebel Rebel.
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: This fires you up on a Friday, doesn't it?
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: Sure does. And got to be fired up to play
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: seventh-ranked team in the nation. Last night on Longhorn Weekly
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: with Coach Sark, we did toward the back half of
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: the show what we always do with a look at
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: the opponent. And so here was our conversation talking about
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: tomorrow night's matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels. Ole Miss, 5-1.
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: Their one loss was to Florida. So obviously we know
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: what Florida's all about as well. But this is a
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: team that knocked off LSU. They're up to number seven
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: in the country. They've been really, really good. Really good.
- 1:21:37Speaker 10: Really good football team. Dear friend of mine is their
- 1:21:40Speaker 10: head coach, Pete Golding. We were together for two years
- 1:21:43Speaker 10: at Alabama as coordinators and won a national championship together.
- 1:21:47Speaker 10: And he went on to Ole Miss to work for
- 1:21:48Speaker 10: Coach Kiffin and took over last year kind of the
- 1:21:52Speaker 10: start of the playoffs, which was a unique time. But
- 1:21:54Speaker 10: what a tremendous job that he did last year in
- 1:21:57Speaker 10: the playoffs and getting them to the semis. What a
- 1:22:00Speaker 10: job he's done in the start of this season. You
- 1:22:02Speaker 10: can see his kind of imprint on the team. They're
- 1:22:06Speaker 10: a physical group. He believes in running the ball, believes
- 1:22:10Speaker 10: in playing good defense. But one thing that hasn't changed
- 1:22:13Speaker 10: is Trinidad Chambliss at quarterback. And boy, is he a dynamic,
- 1:22:16Speaker 10: dynamic football player.
- 1:22:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: What are the things, the challenges that he presents with
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: everything he can do?
- 1:22:22Speaker 10: Well, I think one is there's a level of confidence
- 1:22:26Speaker 10: in which he plays the game.
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: He was a highly successful.
- 1:22:30Speaker 10: Player at Ferris State, and he kind of goes under
- 1:22:33Speaker 10: the radar to Ole Miss and is not the starter.
- 1:22:36Speaker 10: I think three games into the year, he gets put
- 1:22:38Speaker 10: into action and has never looked back since. But I
- 1:22:41Speaker 10: think it was the confidence he gains as the player
- 1:22:44Speaker 10: at Ferris State. Then he gets to Ole Miss, has
- 1:22:46Speaker 10: the season he had last year, And he really just
- 1:22:49Speaker 10: hasn't missed a beat. It's his ability to innately play
- 1:22:53Speaker 10: the game on schedule from the pocket, but it's his
- 1:22:56Speaker 10: playmaking ability on the off-schedule plays.
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: And he can run.
- 1:23:02Speaker 10: And believe me, he's probably going to be one of,
- 1:23:04Speaker 10: if not the fastest guy in the field Saturday.
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: He can run. But what he does is scramble the pass.
- 1:23:10Speaker 10: And so when he breaks the pocket and he starts
- 1:23:12Speaker 10: to scramble, it's all the shots he takes down the
- 1:23:14Speaker 10: field once the pocket breaks down. So we've got to
- 1:23:16Speaker 10: do a great job of trying to contain him in
- 1:23:19Speaker 10: the pocket. We've got to do a great job of
- 1:23:21Speaker 10: staying sticky in coverage for the first play and the
- 1:23:24Speaker 10: second play, as I always like to call it. All
- 1:23:26Speaker 10: the while, they got a running back, Kiwan Lacy, who's
- 1:23:29Speaker 10: a fantastic player as well, who can hurt you on
- 1:23:31Speaker 10: the ground.
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Kiwan Lacy, a lot of folks know, is a
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: former Missouri Tiger. He's also a former Lancaster Tiger from
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: the Dallas Fort Worth area. I know Chris Gilbert of
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: your staff, well acquainted with him and a guy who can,
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: he's had to fight through some injuries, but he's really
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: been effective.
- 1:23:44Speaker 10: He really has, and I'm lot of admiration for him
- 1:23:47Speaker 10: for the toughness that he's exuding because you know I
- 1:23:50Speaker 10: know he's dealing with a leg injury he's dealing with
- 1:23:51Speaker 10: looks like sounds like a shoulder injury but he's fighting
- 1:23:54Speaker 10: through it he's been in and out of the lineup
- 1:23:56Speaker 10: but man when he's healthy when he's going he can
- 1:23:58Speaker 10: make it he can make it very difficult because you're
- 1:24:01Speaker 10: trying to put all this attention on stopping the passing
- 1:24:03Speaker 10: game and Chambliss at the same time they're running stretch
- 1:24:06Speaker 10: outside zone to to number five and Lacey and and
- 1:24:09Speaker 10: uh you know we saw the amount I don't know
- 1:24:11Speaker 10: how many touchdowns he had last season for him so
- 1:24:14Speaker 10: They're a great two-headed monster to go along with a
- 1:24:16Speaker 10: lot of skill that they have at the wide receiver
- 1:24:18Speaker 10: and tight end position.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Let me ask you about the defense because that's the
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: Pete Golding specialty as well. Your thoughts on that defense?
- 1:24:25Speaker 10: Well, I think everything they do starts up front. You know, Echols,
- 1:24:28Speaker 10: Will Echols is a first-round draft pick, hands down, and
- 1:24:32Speaker 10: he's kind of at the forefront of what they do defensively.
- 1:24:37Speaker 10: Cam Franklin is a monster at one of the defensive
- 1:24:40Speaker 10: end spots, kind of Reminds me of Alfred Collins because
- 1:24:43Speaker 10: of the size, 6'5, 300-pound defensive end. And then to me,
- 1:24:48Speaker 10: where Pete makes his, hey, it's the stickiness in coverage,
- 1:24:52Speaker 10: similar to our coverage mechanics, very kind of man principles.
- 1:24:57Speaker 10: Even when they're playing zone, it can feel like man,
- 1:25:00Speaker 10: very contested. And so, you know, they challenge you at
- 1:25:04Speaker 10: the line of scrimmage. They challenge you in the secondary.
- 1:25:06Speaker 10: A lot of new faces, especially in the back end.
- 1:25:10Speaker 10: I think they had some growing pains early in the season,
- 1:25:12Speaker 10: but have gotten.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: Better and better and better. And we saw what they
- 1:25:15Speaker 6: did to Missouri last week.
- 1:25:16Speaker 10: I think beat them 31-3, held them to three points.
- 1:25:19Speaker 6: A Missouri team, by the way, that was hot.
- 1:25:21Speaker 10: So we know what this group is all about.
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: And that's what the SEC has been all about this year, right?
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: It's been crazy. It's been crazy.
- 1:25:27Speaker 10: You know, I was joking the one day about, florida
- 1:25:31Speaker 10: seemed unbeatable they had just they had just beaten old
- 1:25:34Speaker 10: miss 52 to 28 and then they turn around.
- 1:25:37Speaker 6: And go to missouri all right.
- 1:25:39Speaker 10: And missouri hands that hands it to them then south
- 1:25:42Speaker 10: carolina beats florida then florida comes and beats us and
- 1:25:45Speaker 10: then old miss goes and beats missouri last week 31
- 1:25:48Speaker 10: to 3 so it's like who's who but all the
- 1:25:50Speaker 10: while auburn goes to athens georgia and beats georgia kentucky
- 1:25:54Speaker 10: goes to norman and beats oklahoma.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Alabama goes to Tennessee.
- 1:25:59Speaker 10: Alabama goes to Tennessee and Tennessee beats them by three scores.
- 1:26:02Speaker 10: So it's like, I've said this all along. I don't
- 1:26:04Speaker 10: think people wanted to believe me. Any team in our
- 1:26:08Speaker 10: conference can beat any other team in our conference on
- 1:26:11Speaker 10: any given Saturday. Forget what's on the side of the helmets.
- 1:26:15Speaker 10: Forget what jersey they're wearing. There's too many good players.
- 1:26:18Speaker 10: There's too many good coaches. There's too many tough environments
- 1:26:21Speaker 10: that everybody's playing in. It's any given Saturday. And so
- 1:26:25Speaker 10: when I always said like, Yes, you have to be
- 1:26:28Speaker 10: physically tough to compete in this league. You have to
- 1:26:30Speaker 10: be mentally tough to compete in this league because you
- 1:26:33Speaker 10: have to get back up the very next Saturday. Forget
- 1:26:36Speaker 10: what nobody cares what you did last Saturday. What are
- 1:26:39Speaker 10: you going to do this Saturday? That's the most important thing.
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: So that was the conversation with Coach Sark about the
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: Ole Miss Rebels. How about the Rebels themselves? Pete Golding, really,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: you heard Sark say that he's one of his closest friends.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: because Golding was the defensive coordinator when Sark was the
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: offensive coordinator and the play caller at Alabama when they
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: won that national championship. So Golding had to take over
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: the head coaching range, and I thought Sark said it
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: was a real interesting time, what he had to do. That,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: of course, with Lane Kiffin accepting the LSU job after
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: the conference championship game or after the end of the
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: regular season, and then being told by Ole Miss staff
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: you are not allowed to coach the team in the playoff.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: So he had to leave. So Golding had to take
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: over coaching the team in the college football playoff. And
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: what a job he did. They blew out Tulane at home,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: then defeated Georgia in that outstanding Sugar Bowl game. Then
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: in Glendale, almost beat Miami. Went down to the waning
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: seconds of that one. So they did a really good job.
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: This year, they'd start off well enough, including a win
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: over LSU. And there was a lot of hype and
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: a lot of excitement and a lot of, you know,
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: emotion leading into that game. And they beat LSU and
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: then turned around. I don't know if lay the neg
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: is the right word because we saw what Florida can
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: do here as well. But Florida just kind of trampled them.
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: Ran for over 300 yards. and beat them 52-28. After
- 1:28:10Speaker 1: that game, Golding said, we need to do some things
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: to simplify some things on defense. And it seems to
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: have worked, you know, in the last two ballgames, blowing
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: out Vanderbilt and then, of course, holding an explosive Missouri
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: team to just three points in the game. So the
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: question for Golding this week, what did he do? Did
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: he do anything specific to simplify that defense?
- 1:28:32Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't know how much simpler it is. Like
- 1:28:36Speaker 9: I told y'all, it wasn't a new call. wasn't anything
- 1:28:38Speaker 9: like that I think the attention of detail changed a
- 1:28:41Speaker 9: little bit the focus I think every week like we
- 1:28:44Speaker 9: talk about is independent of its own so every game
- 1:28:47Speaker 9: plan doesn't carry over based on what people do but
- 1:28:50Speaker 9: I think the focus of them obviously was a lot
- 1:28:52Speaker 9: better and then I think as a staff by that
- 1:28:55Speaker 9: point you had more evidence of hey what are some
- 1:28:57Speaker 9: things that we're doing well what are we not doing
- 1:28:58Speaker 9: well that we need to eliminate not because it's hard
- 1:29:01Speaker 9: we just don't do it well and we're asking certain
- 1:29:03Speaker 9: guys maybe do things that they can and so there's
- 1:29:06Speaker 9: elimination of some of those things that we just haven't
- 1:29:08Speaker 9: executed well regardless how complex it was or not you
- 1:29:12Speaker 9: know some of them were very simple we're just not
- 1:29:13Speaker 9: very good at it so I think that's you know
- 1:29:15Speaker 9: evaluated week in and week out that's never going to
- 1:29:18Speaker 9: change so You know, every game plan is so different
- 1:29:22Speaker 9: based on who's available and what you're going against. So
- 1:29:25Speaker 9: I don't know if that's all the way correct of
- 1:29:28Speaker 9: how that was explained to you guys, but I think
- 1:29:30Speaker 9: the attention to detail and the focus on doing their
- 1:29:32Speaker 9: job and quit trying to press and do all the other.
- 1:29:35Speaker 8: Things, I think, you know, you did see.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: Next, Golding was talking about, and I understand. Truly, I do.
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: I understand how a lot of frustrated Longhorn fans feel
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: about the team, about Sark, about play calling, and yes,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: about the quarterback, about Arch Manning. There are those who realize,
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: I think, that it's about far more than just the
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: quarterback in order for the offense to move. And then
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: there are some who feel that the quarterback as the
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: centerpiece should be doing a better job than what he's doing.
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: Arch said he has to play better. Sark has said
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: he has to play better. I think we're all nodding
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: our heads in agreement. Golding looks at Arch Manning on
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: the video cut-ups as well as the offense, and he
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: sees an Arch Manning that Longhorn fans are having a
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: difficult time envisioning right now.
- 1:30:29Speaker 9: I think within the system, I mean, I think, you know,
- 1:30:32Speaker 9: Sark runs his system and has been really effective everywhere
- 1:30:35Speaker 9: he's been. So I think regardless who's that quarterback, that's
- 1:30:38Speaker 9: not going to change much. obviously there's packages and short
- 1:30:42Speaker 9: yards that feel positioned to where you got to be
- 1:30:44Speaker 9: aware of certain things that he's done in the past
- 1:30:46Speaker 9: but obviously elite arm talent has been in the system
- 1:30:50Speaker 9: a long time I think some people have shown him
- 1:30:53Speaker 9: some different looks and taken away some first reads and
- 1:30:56Speaker 9: been able to apply some pressure and all that but
- 1:30:58Speaker 9: you know the conception of that he's not an elite
- 1:31:00Speaker 9: player right now is crazy to me all right you
- 1:31:02Speaker 9: can go watch up and I'll get you a 25
- 1:31:04Speaker 9: play cut up and he should be the top pick
- 1:31:05Speaker 9: in the draft all right and then there's other things
- 1:31:07Speaker 9: that you know, up to this point, he'd probably like
- 1:31:09Speaker 9: to have back too.
- 1:31:10Speaker 8: So we know what we're going up against.
- 1:31:12Speaker 9: I mean, I know the perception of what it is
- 1:31:13Speaker 9: right there, you know, right now, but I still think
- 1:31:16Speaker 9: it's an elite offense. I think starts on the best
- 1:31:18Speaker 9: play callers in the country. And we got to be
- 1:31:20Speaker 9: ready to play because he's got all the arm talent
- 1:31:22Speaker 9: in the world.
- 1:31:23Speaker 8: He's a size speed guy.
- 1:31:25Speaker 9: He's much more athletic than you think still has the
- 1:31:27Speaker 9: ability to extend plays. And the guys wanted a high level,
- 1:31:30Speaker 9: you know, and it talked about playoff team before, you know,
- 1:31:32Speaker 9: two years ago. So, They're used to it. They know
- 1:31:35Speaker 9: there's high expectations. They know their back's up against the wall,
- 1:31:37Speaker 9: and we're going to get their best shot.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: All right, so that's how Golding feels about, and he's
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: a defensive mind, so that's how he feels about the
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Texas offense and Arch Manning. What about the Longhorn defense
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: and the challenges it will pose for Trinidad Chambliss and
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: his Ole Miss offense?
- 1:31:56Speaker 9: Yeah, number one, I mean, I think when you watch them,
- 1:31:58Speaker 9: I mean, obviously the players they have, I think they've
- 1:32:00Speaker 9: got elite players that have done a really good job
- 1:32:02Speaker 9: from a recruiting standpoint and putting that defense together. I
- 1:32:05Speaker 9: think it starts with the front, really explosive up front,
- 1:32:08Speaker 9: create a lot of pressure with four.
- 1:32:10Speaker 8: I think Will's done a really good job.
- 1:32:12Speaker 9: It's been obviously good to see that defense week in
- 1:32:15Speaker 9: and week out. He's been in this league a long time,
- 1:32:18Speaker 9: understands what gives people issues. They're really sound on the
- 1:32:21Speaker 9: back end, mix up the coverages. but the ability to
- 1:32:24Speaker 9: pressure their quarterback with four, with some elite guys up front,
- 1:32:27Speaker 9: I think has really played in their favor from a
- 1:32:30Speaker 9: cover standpoint to complement certain things. But I think they're
- 1:32:33Speaker 9: a really, really talented defense, very, very good scheme, very multiple.
- 1:32:38Speaker 8: That creates a lot of problems for offenses.
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: And, you know, at this time of year, what is
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: it we hear from all coaches? Not just from Sarg,
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: but from all coaches, no matter what the record is.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: I remember hearing it from G.J. Kinney when Texas State
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: got off to an 0-3 start. He said, we've got
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: to find consistency on both sides of the ball. I
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: know it sounds like coach speak, but meaning the complementary football,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: all of those kinds of things, creating some turnovers, protecting
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: the football on offense, all of those things being more consistent. Certainly,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: Sark has talked about that. Other coaches have talked about it.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: No matter the record, Ole Miss is no exception to
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: the rule. as we've been talking about and has been written,
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: this is truly an elimination game for trying to get
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: into the college playoff. And not mathematically, but perhaps realistically,
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: if it's one of those, then the team that emerges
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: is going to be the one, Golding says, that is
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: more consistent, not just after the game tomorrow night, but
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: the rest of the way. And he knows it has
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: to be that way for his team.
- 1:33:51Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, number one is good players. Number two,
- 1:33:53Speaker 9: I think stability and system. And number three is the
- 1:33:55Speaker 9: ability to hold them accountable. And I think that's the
- 1:33:58Speaker 9: toughest piece sometime like that third one.
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:34:00Speaker 9: When they come off of a really emotional win and
- 1:34:03Speaker 9: the ability to refocus and.
- 1:34:05Speaker 8: Know like, man, we got to do it again.
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: And I think sometimes there's a false confidence that's created
- 1:34:11Speaker 9: based on outcomes. And we look at scoreboards and we
- 1:34:14Speaker 9: won the game, but it really wasn't based on our
- 1:34:15Speaker 9: body of work and our preparation and the things that
- 1:34:18Speaker 9: we did.
- 1:34:18Speaker 8: We might've got lucky, right?
- 1:34:20Speaker 9: Or this thing might've been mirrored a little bit, right?
- 1:34:22Speaker 9: And they dropped the ball or they didn't complete it.
- 1:34:24Speaker 9: So I think the focus back on your preparation and
- 1:34:27Speaker 9: the habits in which you create in order to give
- 1:34:29Speaker 9: yourself your best shot. And so that to me is
- 1:34:32Speaker 9: a little bit of a motivation piece, you know, now
- 1:34:34Speaker 9: as well. I think, you know, the further you go
- 1:34:36Speaker 9: in the season, right? The body starts getting a little tired.
- 1:34:39Speaker 9: The mind starts getting a little tired. how can you
- 1:34:42Speaker 9: shorten some things from a timing standpoint but be a
- 1:34:46Speaker 9: little more efficient and have better energy doing it. So
- 1:34:49Speaker 9: I think that's always the week-to-week piece now to me
- 1:34:52Speaker 9: at this point in the season. It's like you want
- 1:34:54Speaker 9: to be fresh for game day, and we've got to
- 1:34:56Speaker 9: be able to play fast, and we've got to be
- 1:34:57Speaker 9: able to execute. So there's still a body of work
- 1:35:00Speaker 9: that has to happen Monday through Friday, but we've got
- 1:35:02Speaker 9: to be really smart and diligent about our meeting and
- 1:35:04Speaker 9: our meeting times and our walkthrough and how we practice
- 1:35:08Speaker 9: to be able to keep these guys fresh physically and
- 1:35:09Speaker 9: also mentally. And then there's a fine line to me
- 1:35:12Speaker 9: on building on confidence. There's a lot from Saturday that
- 1:35:16Speaker 9: we did really well that we got to continue to
- 1:35:17Speaker 9: do well. And they should have developed some confidence by
- 1:35:20Speaker 9: doing it. But that confidence came from their preparation and
- 1:35:23Speaker 9: how they practice.
- 1:35:24Speaker 8: And they came out and made their layup.
- 1:35:26Speaker 9: And so there's some other things on that tape that
- 1:35:28Speaker 9: we still got to clean up. So I think it's
- 1:35:30Speaker 9: building on playing well and knowing you got to do
- 1:35:32Speaker 9: it week in and week out. While still looking in
- 1:35:35Speaker 9: the mirror, all of us, players and coaches, there's some
- 1:35:38Speaker 9: things that we've gotten away.
- 1:35:39Speaker 8: With that we're about to play a really elite football
- 1:35:41Speaker 8: team that we're not.
- 1:35:43Speaker 9: And we got to go to work on that this
- 1:35:44Speaker 9: week to make sure we don't put it on tape again.
- 1:35:46Speaker 9: So I think a lot of it is the guys
- 1:35:49Speaker 9: that are in that locker room and what do they
- 1:35:51Speaker 9: really want it to look like. And what really is
- 1:35:53Speaker 9: their goal? And what do they really want the legacy
- 1:35:56Speaker 9: of this team to be? And so I think we
- 1:35:58Speaker 9: got the right type of guys that we know we
- 1:36:00Speaker 9: screw this thing up early and kind of have our.
- 1:36:03Speaker 8: Back against the wall.
- 1:36:04Speaker 9: And we got to be at our best every Saturday,
- 1:36:06Speaker 9: give ourselves our best shot to what our goal is.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: So that's how the coach of the Ole Miss Rebels
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: feels about that, Pete Golding. All right, coming up, we're
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: going to hear from Cowboys coach, and Brewers, the way
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: that that'll work when we continue here in this 4
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: o'clock hour on Sports Radio AM 13 under the zone
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: at the iHeartRadio app. All together now. Thank God it's...
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: That deep vocal register, man. Always happy to be rolling
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: on a Friday with you. with love and kisses not
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: just from us that's the name of the band.
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: Love and kisses i said craig we're coming back from
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: break with love and kisses you do exactly.
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: What i beg your pardon yeah um let's go back
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: to uh what we're talking about the world series earlier
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: uh pat murphy the manager of the brewers was asked
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: uh how uh well first of all what what the
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: um roster decision for brandon woodruff right and and you
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: know would he be available and he wasn't exactly sure
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: at the time being asked yesterday about his uh you
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: know his availability.
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: Obviously it would be great for him the organization and
- 1:37:18Speaker 4: he could help us you know if he can we
- 1:37:20Speaker 4: had three pitchers that haven't pitched yet or at least
- 1:37:22Speaker 4: two that haven't pitched yet and um it's a seven
- 1:37:26Speaker 4: game series there's no man on second with uh in
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: the extra innings, so then you've got to be conscious
- 1:37:33Speaker 4: of length. How much length can this guy give us?
- 1:37:36Speaker 4: He's faced five hitters. And the injury thing. The thing
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: has continued to be a problem in his life. Now
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: he's got a clean bill of health, according to the trainers.
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: But if that same injury comes up again, then we
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: can't replace him. So those are the things that we've
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: got to weigh heavily. What is he going to give us?
- 1:37:55Speaker 4: We'd love to do it. It's a great story, but
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: We have responsibility to those 20-some guys in there and
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: to the organization and to the city and, you know,
- 1:38:06Speaker 4: whoever else we're responsible to.
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: So those are all things we'll consider.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Next, he was asked, and by the way, it was
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: announced that Woodruff is on the roster, so he'll be
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: good to go for the series. How has he prepared
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: his team since returning from the suite from Los Angeles?
- 1:38:22Speaker 5: We played baseball. That's how we prepared.
- 1:38:24Speaker 4: We went out there and played baseball every day, and
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: live at bats and uh you know you can't recreate
- 1:38:31Speaker 4: real you know what i mean it's a long layoff
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: and if we want to use it as an excuse
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: then let let people use an excuse but i refuse
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: to do that like we needed a little bit of
- 1:38:40Speaker 4: a break it was emotional series in la um big
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: you know cross-country trip all that you know so we
- 1:38:48Speaker 4: had a few days where it was a little lighter
- 1:38:50Speaker 4: but then we've picked it up and gotten a lot
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: of live abs but nothing simulates the game the way
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: way it is but I don't follow the numbers.
- 1:39:00Speaker 5: I just know this guy's on point. He's focused. He
- 1:39:03Speaker 5: feels that responsibility.
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: And that's, I think, an easier responsibility for him to
- 1:39:09Speaker 4: carry because it's so natural than to try to carry
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: the pressure of, hey, I got to get four.
- 1:39:14Speaker 5: Hits or I got to do this. You know what
- 1:39:15Speaker 5: I mean?
- 1:39:16Speaker 4: He's just, you know, he's way more important to this
- 1:39:20Speaker 4: process than anyone knows.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: And of course, he's starting Jacob Mizorowski tonight. So what's
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: his takeaways from those two playoff spots where Miz did
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: not go deep?
- 1:39:30Speaker 5: Well, he hasn't been as crisp, you know what I mean?
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: And I don't think anybody's, people are up there thinking
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: it's gonna be 104. And I think they're elated if
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: it's anything less than that. But they're obviously looking at
- 1:39:43Speaker 4: an area and they're always trying to exploit everything. He's exposed,
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: like all these guys get at some point. He's exposed,
- 1:39:49Speaker 4: so- they're going to attack a certain way, and we're
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: going to try to counter that attack the way we
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: counter it. But it's all about Miz and his health
- 1:39:58Speaker 4: and his mental state, and.
- 1:39:59Speaker 5: It's not easy. It's not easy what he's going through.
- 1:40:02Speaker 4: This kid is way over what people would call his
- 1:40:05Speaker 4: innings limit. I think we'll redefine that in years to come,
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: how we approach that, but that's another day.
- 1:40:12Speaker 5: But yeah, you talk about.
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: Taking on the responsibility, mentioning Yellich, the Miz taking on
- 1:40:18Speaker 4: this potential Cy Young winner.
- 1:40:20Speaker 5: That voting hasn't happened yet, or has it?
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: No.
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: Okay. Because I don't know. Anyway, long story.
- 1:40:27Speaker 4: I'm just saying that he's taken on a lot of
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: responsibility as a young 25-year-old kid, and I think it's
- 1:40:34Speaker 4: been a lot for him.
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: So game one tonight between the Brewers and the Blue Jays.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: All right, to the Cowboys, trying to turn it around.
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: On Monday night against the Eagles, Quinnen Williams, along that
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: defensive front for Dallas, asked about the impression's and the
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: importance of this week getting it together against Philadelphia.
- 1:40:54Speaker 5: It's super important.
- 1:40:55Speaker 7: It's super important to be able to get back in
- 1:40:57Speaker 7: that win column. Super important to be able to win
- 1:41:01Speaker 7: the football games every single week. Like, I play this
- 1:41:04Speaker 7: game to win. So, yeah, super, super great opportunity to
- 1:41:08Speaker 7: build on what we need to build on personally as
- 1:41:11Speaker 7: a defensive unit, especially, and as a team. And I'm
- 1:41:15Speaker 7: grateful for the next opportunity, so.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: All right, and also ask for his impressions, what he's
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: seen from Joey Porter Jr. since he joined the Cowboys
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: in the secondary.
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: He's unbelievable.
- 1:41:26Speaker 7: I watched the film last week, and to see him
- 1:41:28Speaker 7: cover guys one-on-one and be able to, the energy that
- 1:41:31Speaker 7: he brings and the celebration he do every time he
- 1:41:34Speaker 7: locks somebody up is.
- 1:41:35Speaker 5: Super dope to see.
- 1:41:38Speaker 7: And like I said, like last week, man, it's all
- 1:41:40Speaker 7: about getting our swag back and all about being.
- 1:41:45Speaker 5: Consistent.
- 1:41:46Speaker 7: That's one of the guys you see on tape every
- 1:41:48Speaker 7: single day. He's going to play with swag. He's going
- 1:41:49Speaker 7: to play with consistency.
- 1:41:51Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: And then one more from Javante Williams. We heard from him,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: the Cowboys running back, earlier in the program. And he
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: was asked, what are the keys to help really limit
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: the damage that opposing teams' blitzes have done to the
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: Cowboys' offense?
- 1:42:06Speaker 8: I think the biggest thing is just communication.
- 1:42:08Speaker 13: Just making sure that us and the O-line, the quarterback,
- 1:42:11Speaker 13: are on the same page with our IDs and things
- 1:42:12Speaker 13: like that. And then just execute when we get those
- 1:42:16Speaker 13: looks that we had in practice with the guys that
- 1:42:18Speaker 13: we have on offense.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: Monday night, Cowboys-Eagles, 6 o'clock, pregame start time on 98.1
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: FM KVET and the kickoff right around 720. We'll be
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: back to wrap up today's edition of the program on
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: 13 Under the Zone.
