Latest / UNMASKED with Wesley Farnsworth / Ep 49 - Breaking Free: The Lie of Self-Reliance
Transcript
- 0:00Strength is one of the most misunderstood words in our
- 0:03culture. We celebrate the person who
- 0:06figures it out, the one who doesn't need help, the one who
- 0:11pushes through, keeps going and somehow manages to hold
- 0:16everything together no matter what's happening underneath the
- 0:19surface. We admire independence.
- 0:24We respect self-sufficiency. We look to the person who never
- 0:29seems to crack. But let me ask you something.
- 0:34What if the strength that we admire is actually the very
- 0:37thing that's keeping us stuck? What if the belief that you
- 0:42should be able to handle life on your own isn't maturity, but a
- 0:48lie? A lie that sounds responsible.
- 0:53A lie that feels safe. A lie that slowly disconnects
- 0:58you from the very things that would actually help you heal.
- 1:04Because here's the truth. Most people, they don't say this
- 1:08out loud. And that is that a lot of people
- 1:12who look strong on the outside are carrying things alone that
- 1:17are quietly breaking them on the inside.
- 1:22Let me say that again. A lot of people who look strong
- 1:26on the outside are carrying things alone that are quietly
- 1:30breaking them on the inside. Today we're talking about that
- 1:41lie, the lie of self-reliance. Welcome to Unmasked, where we
- 1:48take off the filters and we get real about faith, failure and
- 1:52finding freedom. I'm your host, Wesley
- 1:54Farnsworth, and today we're going to start a brand new mini
- 1:58series called Breaking Free, and over the next 4 episodes we're
- 2:03going to walk through something that impacts far more people
- 2:06than we realize, and that is the belief that we're supposed to
- 2:10carry life on our own. We're going to talk about why
- 2:15self-reliance feels strong but isn't, how isolation slowly
- 2:21damages us, and why real brotherhood is so powerful, and
- 2:27what it actually looks like to build a life that supports
- 2:31lasting freedom. But before we talk about
- 2:35isolation, before we talk about community, we have to start at
- 2:39the root, the belief that you should be able to do this alone.
- 2:45So take a breath, pull up a chair, and let's get real.
- 2:50This is unmasked. See the the Lie of
- 3:03self-reliance? It doesn't usually show up all
- 3:07at once. It's something that builds over
- 3:10time. It forms through experiences,
- 3:16through moments where trust was broken, where vulnerability
- 3:21didn't go well, where opening up felt like a mistake.
- 3:27Maybe you shared something once and it was dismissed.
- 3:32Maybe you trusted somebody and they let you down.
- 3:37Maybe you learned early that showing weakness wasn't safe,
- 3:44and so you adapted. You told yourself, I'll just
- 3:49handle it. And at first, this decision felt
- 3:53very wise. It felt like you were in
- 3:57control. It felt like maturity.
- 4:02Maybe it even felt like strength.
- 4:07You stop depending on people. You stop risking vulnerability.
- 4:13You learn how to manage your life in a way that protects you.
- 4:18And the crazy part is, it works, at least for a while.
- 4:26You become more capable, more independent, more
- 4:30self-sufficient. You figure things out, you push
- 4:36through, you get things done. And people around you, they
- 4:41start to notice, they respect you, they trust you, they even
- 4:47depend on you. And without realizing it, you
- 4:51begin to build your identity around being the one who has it
- 4:55together, the one who doesn't need help, the one who carries
- 5:00things quietly. But no one sees the cost because
- 5:10the cost is hidden. The same mindset that makes you
- 5:16look strong externally really starts isolating you internally.
- 5:25You stop sharing honestly, not because you're trying to deceive
- 5:30anyone, but because it doesn't feel necessary anymore.
- 5:34You've learned how to handle things on your own, so why bring
- 5:38anyone else into it? You start giving safe answers.
- 5:44You say I'm good, I'm just busy. It's been a week, but I'm fine.
- 5:52And technically none of that is a lie.
- 5:54You may be good, you may be busy, it may have been a week.
- 6:02But if you're being honest, it's also not the truth.
- 6:06Because over time you get really good at managing what people
- 6:10see. You share enough to stay
- 6:14connected but not enough to really be known.
- 6:18And that is where the shift happens.
- 6:22You're no longer responsible, you're isolated.
- 6:27And isolation doesn't always look like being alone.
- 6:31You can be surrounded by people and still feel completely on
- 6:36your own. I know that I have been there.
- 6:39Have you? Self-reliance, though, can feel
- 6:45like strength. One of the reasons that this lie
- 6:51is so dangerous is because it feels right.
- 6:55It feels responsible to carry your own weight.
- 6:59It feels mature to not burden other people.
- 7:03It feels strong to push through without needing help.
- 7:08But there's a difference between responsibility and
- 7:11self-reliance. Responsibility says I'll do my
- 7:16part. self-reliance says I'm on my own.
- 7:22Responsibility is healthy. self-reliance, when taken too
- 7:26far, slowly cuts you off from the very relationships that God
- 7:30designed to support you. Because from the very beginning,
- 7:35independence was never the goal. In Genesis 218, God says it is
- 7:42not good for man to be alone. That's not a statement about
- 7:47weakness, that's a statement about design.
- 7:51You were not created to carry life by yourself.
- 7:59But see, there's a spiritual impact that no one talks about.
- 8:04So we're going to get even deeper because self-reliance
- 8:08doesn't just affect your relationships with people, it
- 8:12affects your relationship with God.
- 8:15Because when you believe that you have a handle on everything
- 8:18on your own, you stop depending. You still believe in God, you
- 8:24still show up, you still pray, but the honesty begins to fade.
- 8:31Your prayers become more controlled, more filtered, and
- 8:36less raw. You stop bringing him the full
- 8:40weight of what you're carrying, because somewhere along the way
- 8:43you started believing that you should have already handled it.
- 8:48And slowly, without realizing it, your faith shifts from
- 8:54dependence to management, from surrender to control.
- 8:59But Jesus makes it clear in John 15, five.
- 9:04And he says, apart from me, you can do nothing.
- 9:09That's not meant to discourage you.
- 9:12It's meant to be a reminder to you that real strength doesn't
- 9:16come from independence, it comes from connection.
- 9:23He wants you to connect with him and give him everything.
- 9:32If you've ever tried to carry everything by yourself, you know
- 9:37how it plays out. It's exhausting At first.
- 9:44You manage and then you push, and then you start to feel it.
- 9:51The pressure builds, the weight increases, and eventually
- 9:56something inside you gets tired. Not physically deeper than that.
- 10:04You get tired of always being the strong one.
- 10:08The one is always holding it together.
- 10:12You get tired of not having a place where you can just be
- 10:15honest. And that kind of tired, my
- 10:18friends, does not go away with rest because it is not a
- 10:25schedule issue. It's a load issue.
- 10:29You're carrying something that you were never meant to carry
- 10:33alone, and no amount of strength can fix that.
- 10:42At some point, every single person has to have a moment
- 10:47where they realize that what they're doing isn't working
- 10:51anymore. It might not be a dramatic
- 10:55moment, It might just be a quiet thought.
- 11:00I can't keep doing it like this. And that moment when it happens,
- 11:07it matters because it's the beginning of breaking the lie.
- 11:13Not fixing everything, not solving everything, just
- 11:17recognizing that something isn't right, that maybe strength isn't
- 11:23what you thought it was, that maybe asking for help isn't
- 11:28weakness. That maybe the life that you've
- 11:32built around independence isn't actually leading you to freedom.
- 11:42So what's the first step towards freedom?
- 11:44Breaking the lie of self-reliance doesn't mean
- 11:47become dependent on everyone. It means that you become honest.
- 11:54It means that you start letting the right people into the right
- 11:58places. It means acknowledging that you
- 12:01were never designed to carry life alone.
- 12:05And that step, that step is simple.
- 12:09It's not easy, but it is simple. You tell the truth, maybe for
- 12:16the first time in a long time, not to everyone, but to someone.
- 12:23And at that moment, that moment everything changes because it's
- 12:31in that moment that you stopped carrying it alone, and the
- 12:35weight that you had been carrying starts to shift.
- 12:41So let me ask you something. Where in your life have you been
- 12:47trying to handle things on your own?
- 12:51What have you convinced yourself that you should be able to
- 12:55carry? What have you kept to yourself
- 13:00because it felt easier than letting someone in?
- 13:05And what would it look like for you to stop doing that?
- 13:11Not all at once, but just enough to take one step towards
- 13:17honesty. Because breaking free does not
- 13:21start with a big moment. It starts with telling the
- 13:25truth. Next time on Unmask, we're going
- 13:35to go a little bit deeper and we're going to take the next
- 13:39step in this journey and we're going to talk about the cost of
- 13:44isolation. Because self-reliance doesn't
- 13:47just keep you busy, it slowly pulls you away from the very
- 13:52relationships that help you grow.
- 13:56We'll talk about why isolation is so dangerous and how stepping
- 14:01out of it begins to restore connection, clarity, and hope.
- 14:08If this episode resonated with you, share it with someone that
- 14:12came to mind. And remember this.
- 14:16You don't have to carry life alone.
- 14:20You were never meant to. And grace, Grace is greater than
- 14:31your past. And real freedom, real freedom
- 14:36begins the moment that you choose to live unmasked.
- 14:41God bless you.
