Transcript
- 0:00John Summers is the motoring historian.
- 0:02He was a company car thrashing technology sales rep that turned into a fairly inept
- 0:07sports bike rider hailing from California.
- 0:10He collects cars and bikes built with plenty of cheap and
- 0:12fast and not much reliable.
- 0:15On his show, he gets together with various co-hosts to talk about new
- 0:18and old cars driving motorbikes, motor racing, and motoring travel.
- 0:35Good day.
- 0:36Good morning, good afternoon.
- 0:38It is John Summers, the motoring historian, the last Vegas Concord Ance.
- 0:44I know Elegance and Las Vegas perhaps
- 0:49oxymoronic, but.
- 0:50Cars in Vegas.
- 0:53Oh, that really works, doesn't it?
- 0:55Cars in Vegas.
- 0:57The whole fact that the collector car world started in, in my mind, sure.
- 1:03On the East coast with the Hershey people, but on the west coast out here,
- 1:07certainly north, it's the casino magnet.
- 1:11Bill Harra.
- 1:13That when I was at the Blackhawk, so many of ha of, of the Blackhawk
- 1:18cars had at one point been in, in the Hara collection and he, he really
- 1:23was a colossus in, in the hobby.
- 1:25And, and therefore it's applicable, right?
- 1:27That a big casino town has a car show.
- 1:31And let's be clear, right, the Las Vegas Concord, I hadn't realized this
- 1:35when I rocked up there, but you know, having driven my half million mile.
- 1:40F two 50 diesel powerstroke pickup truck down the main strait of the Las Vegas
- 1:48Grand Prix with the barriers up and so on.
- 1:50Thinking, you know, wow, I too might be pastry or Norris, or.
- 1:56Lando, did they name him after Lando Calvion in Star Wars?
- 2:02That is the question, isn't it?
- 2:03I think they did.
- 2:04He's aged about right, isn't he?
- 2:05Were his parents Star Wars people?
- 2:07Is he named after a character in Star Wars?
- 2:09Is that cool or is that idiotic?
- 2:15The event is organized by the win.
- 2:19They comped me and, and the other people who came and, and were docent
- 2:23volunteers, they, they comped us rooms.
- 2:25I really wanna thank them for that because it's really was an, an awesome event.
- 2:30And you know, I mentioned that the Grand Prix took place in a few weeks.
- 2:34I hadn't realized that in between the Concor and the Grand Prix is sema.
- 2:40So there really is a sort of motor fest at Las Vegas, and it's not one
- 2:47of these, like where even at Monterey, you know, pebble Beach, you need
- 2:52a car to get around, everything's like distributed, but you could have
- 2:56just stayed in your hotel room for.
- 2:59Two weeks and done all three events.
- 3:02Like everything is right there.
- 3:04And that really is the theme of Vegas actually as, as a show because the
- 3:10fact that your room is, you know, or be it a Vegas walk away, so you
- 3:15know, a five or 10 minute walk.
- 3:18But nonetheless it is a walk away from the show field, show fields.
- 3:25I should say, and let's talk about that in just a moment, but the fact that the
- 3:31show fields are walkable, that there's plenty of car parking, there's many, many
- 3:38hotels rooms within walking distance of the show field, it actually makes Vegas
- 3:45absolutely ideal to host a concore.
- 3:49It's as simple as even if you are not somebody who has a collector car, it's
- 3:53not a huge jump of imagination to feel like or to have had that experience
- 3:58where you're gonna take the car to the show, but your significant other's
- 4:02not that interested and the dog or the kid or whatever's just a lot of extra
- 4:07schlep and you're like, you know what?
- 4:10I'm just not gonna bother going.
- 4:11Because I don't wanna leave the significant other at home
- 4:15with a dog or kid situation.
- 4:17I just, I'm just, you know, it's, this is a pleasure event.
- 4:20I'm just not gonna go.
- 4:22If you can have a hotel room nearby, how much more accessible
- 4:27is it with the whole dog?
- 4:29A kid, significant other who wants to wear shoes that are ridiculous,
- 4:33but that means she can't walk pro.
- 4:34You know, all of that stuff.
- 4:35Right.
- 4:36These are issues which I would say most car guys collect.
- 4:41I don't wanna generalize, there's plenty of women car guys, but you
- 4:44know, probably their significant others aren't that interested in in cars or
- 4:49might not be that interested in cars.
- 4:51The point is, right, that if the casino's right there, if there's all
- 4:55the entertainment of Vegas right there, if you could just go back to your.
- 4:59Room and like it's easy to take a pee and take your shoes
- 5:02off and all of that, right?
- 5:04It's absolutely huge and it makes the event really completely
- 5:10different event from any other one that, that I've been to.
- 5:13So, as I say, it, uh, wins.
- 5:16Organize the, the event I, I stayed at the Wynn Hotel.
- 5:19They did comp me.
- 5:21I had to pay the room charge and the discharge and the, that charge and,
- 5:25and I really appreciate them doing it.
- 5:28And they did a superlative job in terms of, of organization.
- 5:34So I said show fields, didn't I?
- 5:37Yeah.
- 5:38Show fields.
- 5:40There is an area which I did my tours around, which resembles Pebble Beach.
- 5:47Might almost be Pebble Beach in some highlights.
- 5:49You know, there was, uh, pebble Beach winning Gaia this year.
- 5:53There was some nice American cars, there was some nice pre-war cars.
- 5:56There was some nice sort of Europe, you know, Maza, ferragine, Gini types.
- 6:01You know, there there was, there was that kind of stuff around.
- 6:03There was some nice jaguars knocking round.
- 6:07So you had the same kind of experience.
- 6:10I would say that you have, not so much at Pebble Beach, but certainly the event
- 6:16that I'm personally involved in, that I'm chief docent of now, surprisingly
- 6:21and absurdly, and I've simply a.
- 6:23There's a function of poor Wayne Craig passing, but the Hillsborough
- 6:27event is a fairly small number of cars, and it's a local event, but
- 6:32it draws a very high caliber of car.
- 6:35And the Vegas event was almost like that.
- 6:37There weren't a lot of cars, but.
- 6:39In the PWA beachy part, there were, uh, some really high quality, nice ones,
- 6:45much, much better cars than you would ever see at, uh, local cars and coffee.
- 6:54With the rise of vste, I feel like it, it's shown that there is room
- 6:59for more events than the traditional Pebble Beach and Abil Ryland.
- 7:04I feel like there is room for, uh, more than that.
- 7:08I feel like what Vegas has done really effectively is look at
- 7:14the supercar crowd and say, you know, what can we do to elevate.
- 7:19The supercar, hypercar crowd, people's experience.
- 7:24And of course, if you've just spent a million dollars on a Ferrari
- 7:28and then you see there's another Ferrari that's worth 35 million or 50
- 7:33million, or maybe even more than that, you're naturally peak to understand
- 7:37why that car might be worth more.
- 7:40And what the Vegas event is set up to do is to provide that kind of tutorial.
- 7:46And certainly that was what I looked to facilitate.
- 7:51The people were Vegas, really Vegas.
- 7:55And I would say that one of the, the guys that I, I worked with who's
- 7:59chief to in uh, pebble now said to me, you know, a lot of the people that
- 8:04you do tours for, I bet you most of 'em have never been to a car show.
- 8:07Before, probably half of 'em never been to a car show.
- 8:10And those that have, have not been to a kind of point judged pebble,
- 8:15beachy kind of car show, which as I say, the Pebble beach style show
- 8:19field was that it was points and, and judged and, and, and so on.
- 8:24And indeed, you know, he was absolutely right.
- 8:26My experience was the, the people who were coming round were people who, you
- 8:32know, who were in Vegas and who were interested in cars and were, were car
- 8:36people, but they definitely weren't Pebble Beach kind kind of of people.
- 8:41So, so there was a really cool kind of education going on.
- 8:45And of course, um, these.
- 8:46Kind of people are, I mean, one of the, one of my guests, uh, she had an eye
- 8:51patch that had a picture of an eye on it.
- 8:55So it was quite disconcerting talking with her because she had like sunglasses
- 8:59on and the eye patch and the, yeah, husband, uh, lots of gold jewelry and
- 9:06yeah, just welcome to Las Vegas, just a very, you know, Las Vegas kind of feel.
- 9:12So it was really fun doing that in terms of.
- 9:15The people and the cars, but I've just talked about the pebble, beachy kind
- 9:20of show field right at the foot of the wind, like right off the strip.
- 9:26They've not just got this one field, they've got like three or four.
- 9:31One field was just Lamborghinis.
- 9:34It was like you'd sort of, you know, you crusted a rise and then
- 9:37there was a field of Lamborghinis.
- 9:39And I don't mean like, you know, a dozen, oh, I wanna over exaggerate.
- 9:44Probably 50 cars.
- 9:46You know, I would be surprised if it was less than 50 cars.
- 9:50Certainly comfortably in excess of two dozen cars.
- 9:55And of course what that allay builds you to do if you are a enthusiast
- 9:59is compare and contrast and, and that's unique and and valuable.
- 10:05Now to have that would've been awesome, but to then have two
- 10:10or perhaps three more fields.
- 10:13That have pans and bugattis and, and then a sort of manufacturer kind of area, you
- 10:21know, Gunter works and over Finch and you know, those kind of like braas, you know,
- 10:28for whatever brand kind of guys don't wanna knock that if that's your thing.
- 10:33Guess I'd love to have that much money to be able to, you know, spun that much on
- 10:37a special version of a, of another car.
- 10:40Why am I doubtful?
- 10:42I mean, I had a student who worked at Gun to Works, I'd
- 10:45never even heard of them before.
- 10:47And, you know, the front end treatment is my, my, isn't it?
- 10:50And I happen not to like what the going to works look for
- 10:55the front end of Porsches, but.
- 10:57You know, whatever, each of their own happy, the, you know.
- 11:01But this is the kind of people who were at the, the Vegas show.
- 11:05I think Paani launched a new car or something like that.
- 11:09I might you include some pictures of it.
- 11:10'cause there was one car that he seemed to be on stage talking about at one point
- 11:14when I was coming to and from the show field after one of my tours and the car
- 11:19was like in the reception of the hotel, faintly reminiscent of one of the Ford.
- 11:27Lamar cars, I might interrupt myself and record a little bit,
- 11:32but I, I wanna say, is it the J car or was it the Ford three liter?
- 11:38There was a matchbox model of it.
- 11:39That's when I knew about the car.
- 11:40I don't think it was that successful, but you know, by that time, matchbox
- 11:43had committed to doing the model.
- 11:45So sort of, you know, the car through the model, even though the real
- 11:48car didn't race anywhere near as.
- 11:50Successful.
- 11:51The GT 40, I can't remember the exact, but this is what that PA
- 11:55looks like with a kind of fishy high tail, like swoopy high tail.
- 12:02Yeah.
- 12:02Editor.
- 12:03John's here to tell you it's the four three liter.
- 12:06Um, apparently it was built by Alan Mann and there is a matchbox model
- 12:10of it linked to the Matchbox model.
- 12:12So a photograph of the actual car, which does look, uh, a bit fishy
- 12:17and I think does have proportions that are reminiscent of the pagani
- 12:21that I'll, uh, I'll add a picture.
- 12:24Quite appeal.
- 12:25Quite appealing, although obviously I'd rather have the
- 12:27real race car, wouldn't you?
- 12:32I was fundamentally blown away by the fact that, that there was so much stuff there.
- 12:38The Bugatti field.
- 12:39I mean, my God, there was some crazy statistic like 53.
- 12:45Bugatti Veron imported into the US and of those, like 50 of them
- 12:50or 33 imported into the us and of them, 30 of them were at the show.
- 12:55So that was pretty stu fine.
- 12:56Really.
- 12:57I mean, I'm not a modern hypercar kind of person.
- 13:00But the spectacle of that is a Stu Fine thing.
- 13:05And you know, as somebody who's not looked closely at them before, it's
- 13:08pretty awesome to be able to compare the different evolutions of, of Veron and then
- 13:15sheron and, you know, so, so this is quite an interesting thing, I I, I this modern.
- 13:20Volkswagen design.
- 13:22I find it very iterative.
- 13:23It's like in your mind, today's Audis look the same as ones from 20 years ago,
- 13:29but they don't, they've like tweaked and changed and evolved and, you know, they
- 13:33retained the brand values whilst modern.
- 13:36I, I do feel like that has gone on with Bugatti as well.
- 13:40And it, it's awesome to see, but it's also a bit Germanic and mechanical
- 13:44and not the way that I feel like, you know, it's, it's not the way Gandini.
- 13:48Design the Diablo is a, it's did you design the Diablo, but
- 13:52I mean the counteract, but you understand what I'm driving at.
- 13:55In that period, design was done.
- 13:57Great flair and passion.
- 13:59It's not the way SC Etti did the original Ferrari, GTO is it.
- 14:05So you know, I mean, call me.
- 14:08Old fashioned, right?
- 14:09The rustle and the paper signifies that I'm actually taking up my paper
- 14:14to, uh, talk through after 16 minutes of just absolute off the cuff drl.
- 14:20So the first note that I had here was, this is concourse, but Vegas style.
- 14:25And I think I've conveyed that already.
- 14:28The judged lawn.
- 14:29Pebble winning car was the Mercedes, I'm not sure if it's an SSK, but SS
- 14:37Mercedes, like twenties Mercedes.
- 14:39That was ordered new by Lord Howe, the sort of patron of British motorsport.
- 14:45So my sort of tour piece was around the whole notion of, you
- 14:49know, the unelected representative who takes it upon himself to.
- 14:53Take on a cause in this case, motor sport and really drive that forward.
- 14:59And, and Lord, how is, when you look at the political history of motoring
- 15:04in Britain, rarely for the first, like 50 or 60 years, rarely does he not,
- 15:09does he not sort of get a mention so.
- 15:12I've gotta believe that when he bought this Mercedes, it was
- 15:15kind of a, a no thine enemy.
- 15:17I mean, he sat in the, the House of laws, which is the
- 15:20equivalent of the British Senate.
- 15:21But as I say, Lords aren't voted.
- 15:23They just like inherit the titles so well.
- 15:25Some are, some aren't.
- 15:27But you know, in that period, a lot of them.
- 15:29You know, and in his case, he inherited the tightly, he didn't do anything,
- 15:32you know, to become a Lord unique because it was bodied in Britain.
- 15:38Um, it has a very British kind of, of style to its super rakish.
- 15:43I put a photograph that I took of the.
- 15:46Pontoon, it's kind of a step, it's kind of a storage container
- 15:51on the side of the car.
- 15:52It's just a beautiful piece of art.
- 15:54But as I say, I really feel like it's, uh, the case of no thine enemy, that
- 15:59this was Lord how very much saying to Bentley and Rolls Royce, look,
- 16:05this is what the Germans can do.
- 16:07We need to be able to do better than this.
- 16:09And uh, you know, he was a keen racer.
- 16:12So, you know, you, you know, the car was exercised.
- 16:16So more recently it's, I think it's owned by John Shirley.
- 16:20I'll delete myself out if I'm wrong.
- 16:22Alright.
- 16:22I just leave myself in there to confuse posterity.
- 16:27The point is, he's had a beautiful restoration on it and the fact
- 16:32that he's ready to enter a car, that one Pebble, B Jack, the Las
- 16:36Vegas Concor, I mean, it just gave.
- 16:38It's a beautiful way to anchor your tour and of course most of the people walking
- 16:43past it don't have a Scooby-Doo what it is and especially when it's parked up
- 16:47opposite a row of modern Formula one cars.
- 16:51I mean, this is amusing actually.
- 16:52People will walk in straight past the how Mercedes and we're gushing over
- 16:58the sort of Shum me era, F three 10.
- 17:02I think that's the designation, but a sort of, you know.
- 17:0420 ish, 15, 20 ish year old Ferrari Formula one car.
- 17:09And of course, nowadays they're like, everyone's like, Ooh, the V 10.
- 17:13What you're struck by now is how bloody big the modern cars are next to it.
- 17:16It looks like a Formula Three car, basically in comparison
- 17:20to a modern Formula one car.
- 17:22But look.
- 17:22Right.
- 17:23That was another thing that was bloody awesome about the show, is that they
- 17:28didn't just have a few, they seemed to have like half the grid of modern
- 17:32Formula One cars and it's really a, an an impressive kind of display.
- 17:38I mean, I guess easy, right?
- 17:39'cause the Grand Prix coming up, I hadn't really thought that through
- 17:42before, but really just the very juxtaposition of the pebble winner and.
- 17:49Michael's Formula One car and modern Formula one cars.
- 17:52I mean, that was what I felt was special about the Vegas event.
- 17:58So I said I drove over in the F two 50 power stroke.
- 18:02I mean, it's 1500 miles on a weekend.
- 18:04I mean his total trial by fire because like a halfway, I ran the thing out
- 18:08of gas not long after I bought it, and then had to purge the low gas line,
- 18:14the diesel lines and all of that.
- 18:16So.
- 18:17Actually just within the last 24 hours.
- 18:20I'm recording this a long time After this road trip, months after the road trip.
- 18:24It's like January now.
- 18:25When this event was sort of November or October or something of last
- 18:29year, it's had some fueling problem now it's not running right now.
- 18:33Bloody F two 50.
- 18:34Well, anyway, I, I ran out of gas, fixed that, and then was like, right, I
- 18:38just have to trial by fire this thing.
- 18:41So I drove it to Vegas and back, and I drove by Mono Lake and that kind of way.
- 18:45I took like a, almost a like direct route.
- 18:47Drove across Yosemite.
- 18:49Really, really awesome drive.
- 18:52The truck only seems big.
- 18:54The city, right.
- 18:56When you're in a, it's, it's a crew cab long bed and it only
- 18:59seems big when you're in the city.
- 19:00Like when you're just driving along.
- 19:01Normally it's fine, but when you like get into Vegas and then have
- 19:05to park at one casino and it's a massive hike and normally it'd be
- 19:10fine 'cause you travel light, but.
- 19:13Now you're doing a concord, you've got like multiple pairs of
- 19:17nice shoes and you know, jackets and all of, of that bollocks.
- 19:22So I, I had to leave the truck parked up, not miles away, but like a long way.
- 19:29I mean, it, I basically, I spent one, I wouldn't say whole day, but I spent a
- 19:34good two or three hours just 'cause it was like a 20 minute walk from my room.
- 19:39To the truck and back and I couldn't carry all the stuff in one go, so I
- 19:43was like hiking backwards and forwards.
- 19:45So it was really Betty Salick, let me tell you.
- 19:48That was really annoying.
- 19:50And uh, but it's my own stupid fault, right?
- 19:52For driving a giant truck.
- 19:54And it probably would've fitted in the other car parking.
- 19:57But, you know, you don't want get it stuck, do you?
- 19:59I mean, it's like driving in past the barrier and then it
- 20:03getting stuck on the ramp.
- 20:04You know, you just like.
- 20:08So the night before the Concor, we were invited to a party and
- 20:12the party was shortly after we'd done our pre-show field walk.
- 20:18And that's usual when you do the pre-show field walk, not all the cars there.
- 20:21And in this case we did the pre-show field walk the night before.
- 20:25So it's pretty cool as it broad arrow or RM or one of them
- 20:29were doing auctions there.
- 20:30So whilst I was waiting to meet the others.
- 20:33Right there in the hotel, in the middle of the hotel was like a
- 20:37full on like Italian job spec.
- 20:41Old English white mini really looked good.
- 20:44Rarely have I lost it after a mini more, it was in exactly my
- 20:49specification, you know, mark one external hinges, Minna light wheels.
- 20:55But then somebody had put big taillights on it and it just offended me.
- 20:59It just offended me completely.
- 21:01I was like, Ew.
- 21:03Like.
- 21:03Get out of town.
- 21:05Like you've gotta do the small, delicate taillights, the outsides, the
- 21:11plexiglass, the details have to be right.
- 21:14I just wanna say British people, this business of fitting black and
- 21:19white plates, like when I say old fashioned, I mean like from the sixties,
- 21:23black plates with silver letters on them, on cars from the 1970s.
- 21:29Like anything later than.
- 21:32A sort of J or K plate car that has to be a plastic number plate.
- 21:37If you've got an R or a V or a W red car, like a nine eighties escort
- 21:42XR three, that car needs to have a yellow number plate at the back.
- 21:47It's just, it just does it
- 21:51party the night before?
- 21:53I digress.
- 21:54I was on the show field, wasn't I, you know, I was talking about pottering
- 21:57around the show field the night before, and I almost didn't go to the party.
- 22:01I wanted to like show my face and I, and I wanted to, you know, mingle a little bit.
- 22:07And so it, it made sense to, uh, to Potter down there.
- 22:12Oh, the people like, oh wow.
- 22:15I had a number of really interesting small talkie conversations with people.
- 22:22And they were very vegasy kind of interactions.
- 22:25You know, it was fun, but I can't remember a single thing
- 22:29they said or or anything about.
- 22:30And there's one woman that I spoke to who was taller than me.
- 22:34I remember speaking to her for a little bit.
- 22:36I was with a guy, pebble chief docent guy, and he's an imposing looking
- 22:43guys like silver beard and silver hair and broad shoulder and tall.
- 22:48He had a gold jacket on.
- 22:50So, uh, this guy rocks up.
- 22:52He's wearing this like green snake skin kind of jacket and I can't remember
- 22:58what his role was, but he has, he was basically like, you know, they
- 23:03compared notes on having loud jackets.
- 23:06And then we got talking to the guy and he has this lovely, oh, in fact, I mean,
- 23:11I'll, I'll include a picture of the car.
- 23:13I've seen the car at Lahore as well.
- 23:15He has the.
- 23:16NY Lamborghini, I think it's a three 50 or a 400 gt.
- 23:21It was actually used for any kind of motor sport, so it has like a semi
- 23:25kind of racing spec thing on it.
- 23:28I wasn't convinced by the car before.
- 23:30It was cool and all, but it, I wasn't convinced by the actual
- 23:33motor sport history, the guy's passion, overwrote, all of that.
- 23:38For me, the guy's passion for Lamborghinis in general, overwrote, all that.
- 23:43And I, and I walked away thinking, I mean, Ken, like you do with Lamborghinis,
- 23:47like, well, maybe it's not for me, but like, I'm really pleased that that
- 23:51stuff's in the world and, and uh, you know, so, uh, so that was fun having
- 23:56like a bit of small talk with him, but I was still amused by being amused.
- 24:00By the loud jacket, people comparing notes with each other.
- 24:04Well, I thought I might posh over to one of the food stations and get
- 24:08some food, and I was like looking at it being like, fucking Alex Risotto.
- 24:12I hate risotto when none other than Il Haggerty asked me if I
- 24:17would please pass him some risotto.
- 24:20Which I, I, Julie did, turning back to find that Horatio PA was leaning in
- 24:26to get some risotto himself as well.
- 24:29Didn't persuade me that I wanted risotto.
- 24:31Still fucking hate Otto.
- 24:33It's the Kiss's death on cooking shows.
- 24:34By the way, if you're watching a TV cooking show, if anybody's like,
- 24:38I'm doing the risotto, like, no.
- 24:40Right?
- 24:40No.
- 24:41Clearly there's some like, you know, rhythm stirring stuff that you
- 24:45need to do that you can do in the kitchen normally, but on in tv, on TV
- 24:50land, it's just not possible to do.
- 24:52It's always the kiss of death.
- 24:53Mark my words.
- 24:54If you are watching a cooking TV show, I should.
- 24:57I could make money betting on that, couldn't I?
- 24:59That short term betting thing.
- 25:03So you tend to do the tours early in the day and, uh, I wouldn't have
- 25:08said we were remotely overworked and the tour groups were small.
- 25:11I think I did two or three tours and, and so probably, and each group was
- 25:15maybe a couple of two people and one put.
- 25:19To, you know, a couple and a one person or something like that, you know, that
- 25:22was, the groups weren't very big groups, so it's great, right, because then
- 25:25it's a conversation and, and you can really provide a value add for people.
- 25:29I don't feel like I need to broadcast to 50 people.
- 25:32I'd, I'd rather do like a one-to-one, and, and then people feel like they've got a
- 25:36real value add and, and maybe feel like they actually, you know, have learned
- 25:40something rather than have just looked and been like, well, that's a nice one.
- 25:43I mean, I, I know how I'm like when I go to a museum.
- 25:46I don't wanna do an audio guide, but at the same time, I do like to leave with a
- 25:50bit more information than I had before.
- 25:53I happen to enjoy reading the plinths and stepping back and looking and reading.
- 25:57I get that other people learn in a different kind of a way and and wanna
- 26:01learn different kind of way and, and that's why I've always felt like doing
- 26:05tour guiding stuff was worthwhile to do.
- 26:08You know, and with these people, obviously you get, if, if you're coming
- 26:10from a place where you've never been to a judge car show before, there's
- 26:14so much more that you can learn here in addition to just the car.
- 26:17So it was fun interacting with the people and doing that.
- 26:20And I was tired walking back to my room when, uh, I saw, uh,
- 26:25I, I'd already seen his red.
- 26:28Sheron.
- 26:28If you know the world of automotive YouTubers, you will know the moment.
- 26:33Not Red Sheron.
- 26:34Red Veron.
- 26:35The moment I said Red Veron, I was, uh, I was talking about Ed Boian.
- 26:40Um, he was lurking right there on, on the lawn there.
- 26:43And I'm, I'm not one to go up and introduce myself to celebs or semi
- 26:48celebs or, or, or whatever, but you know, he was there with old Don McGuire,
- 26:53the McGuire's car polish people.
- 26:56And, uh.
- 26:57McGuire, I, I realized standing there looking at both of 'em
- 27:00are like a head taller than me.
- 27:01So it's a peculiar thing.
- 27:02But I realized standing there looking at them, that both of these people try and
- 27:06do the same thing that I do, which isn't, but they just do it more successfully
- 27:09than me, which is they've made their passion for automobiles a living just
- 27:15because they're earning a reasonably good living and it doesn't stop 'em
- 27:18Continuing to tell stories and share the passion and encourage other people.
- 27:24To be enthusiastic about motoring and old cars and just caring for the automotive
- 27:32and engineering cultural heritage of the 20th century or whatever you
- 27:37want, you know, all, all of the above.
- 27:38So, so I did a whole like.
- 27:40Gushing fanboy piece with him around, you know, thanks to what you do for the hobby.
- 27:45And then we walked through, uh, the hotel together 'cause he
- 27:49needed to look for reception.
- 27:51And it was amusing because I think he thought that I had a lot to say to him.
- 27:55And maybe 'cause I'd jammed on a lot when I first met, but I
- 27:58didn't really, afterwards when I got back to my room, I was like,
- 28:01shit, I should have asked him this.
- 28:03Or I could have asked him that.
- 28:04Or I could have said, oh, bravo on, uh, that, or I did say to him.
- 28:09Mentioned the, the class that I do, which is a, that I teach, which is a
- 28:13storytelling class, and I mentioned how with VIN Wiki, I felt like,
- 28:18you know, my initial thing was, God, this bastard stolen my lunch.
- 28:22But then upon reflection I was like, no.
- 28:24On the contrary, this is actually.
- 28:27Publicizing the form of pure automotive storytelling.
- 28:31It's saying there is something special about automotive stories.
- 28:35And it's funny, I, I read a a, a Reddit that commented, uh, that
- 28:39everybody on Vin Wiki was like a, a law breaking arrogant asshole.
- 28:44Some of the guys that he has on there certainly years ago came across like that.
- 28:51Well, I think that's even better, right?
- 28:53There's nothing more beautiful.
- 28:55It's like the Jeffrey Chauser inviting somebody on and having them condemn
- 29:00themselves out of their own mouth.
- 29:03Like how you let the fool tell a story to make himself look like a fool.
- 29:08You allow the coward to paint himself as a venal.
- 29:12Greedy coward.
- 29:13And, and some of the people that Ed Boian has had on Van Wiki,
- 29:16they do come across like that.
- 29:18And of course, people, uh, are ambivalent about the whole nature of cannon balling,
- 29:23which is, you know, and it's by being a cannonball record holder, that that's how,
- 29:28um, you know, ed Boian came to the public eye in the first place, if you like, and
- 29:32was able to, to build this brand around.
- 29:36Buying the cheapest cars, the worst examples of exotic cars
- 29:39that he could possibly can.
- 29:41And then by virtue of him having it and talking about it and repairing it, you
- 29:45then turn the bad story into a good story.
- 29:48And you write off the fact that the value's bad.
- 29:51And you know, if you own, if you make enough song and dance about
- 29:55stick shift, Lamborghini mer largo's, which you happen to own.
- 29:59Sooner or later, 'cause there's only like 30 or 50 or a hundred
- 30:03of them or whatever there is.
- 30:05Sooner or later you are actually able to move values materially based
- 30:11upon the research and the stories and all of that stuff that you're doing.
- 30:15So I should have said to him, you know, Bravo for showing me that shit.
- 30:19You know, 'cause uh, I may have been telling Carl stories longer
- 30:22than you, but I didn't see a way to.
- 30:25Sort of monetize it as effectively as as you did.
- 30:30I talked much more then than I actually did to him.
- 30:32I must have been knackered.
- 30:34Thank you.
- 30:34Drive through.
