Latest / Foul Territory / Lance Lynn: Bieber’s choice, Skubal prediction, Cardinals to-do list
Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome you to the off season to do list with
- 0:06Speaker 1: Cardinals greats. Of course, Lance Lynn been on the show many, many,
- 0:09Speaker 1: many time. I'm he's a great don't worry. Don't give
- 0:11Speaker 1: me that face a j When I think of Lance Lynn,
- 0:14Speaker 1: I think of the Saint Louis Cardinals. Lance good to
- 0:16Speaker 1: be with you as always. Of course you can catch
- 0:18Speaker 1: him on Cardinal Territory with Matt Holliday and Kyle Gibson.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Jim Hayes, Welcome to the show again. My friend Ryan
- 0:27Speaker 1: Helsley says he expects Saint Louis to reach out to him.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Should he be expecting that, Lance I don't often hear
- 0:34Speaker 1: guys say out loud that they expect a certain team
- 0:37Speaker 1: to reach out. Did that surprise you?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Uh? No?
- 0:40Speaker 3: I think you're looking at a guy who played, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 3: his whole career up until getting traded there. He's well,
- 0:46Speaker 3: well like there didn't do you know what? You know,
- 0:50Speaker 3: the Mets hope when they traded for him. So it
- 0:52Speaker 3: could be a nice little fit for him to come
- 0:54Speaker 3: back and re establish himself as the elite closer he
- 0:57Speaker 3: was two years ago. So I see the fit it,
- 1:00Speaker 3: especially because if you're gonna have a young team. When
- 1:03Speaker 3: you have a chance to win games, you want to
- 1:05Speaker 3: have somebody in the back end that can make sure
- 1:07Speaker 3: you you win those games. And it can really help
- 1:09Speaker 3: the organization and those guys learn how to become winners.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So I can see the fit there, and I like
- 1:14Speaker 3: it too, because Hell's was a Cardinal, you know, drafty
- 1:19Speaker 3: and through the minor leagues and all that.
- 1:20Speaker 2: So he's coming back home.
- 1:22Speaker 1: All right. What are the top three things Lance Linn
- 1:25Speaker 1: that the Cardinals need to do this offseason?
- 1:29Speaker 2: Well, it sounds like it's pretty simple.
- 1:30Speaker 3: It's trade Sonny Gray, trade Contreras, and trade whom I'm missing, Oh,
- 1:36Speaker 3: Aaron being talked about who's been talked about being traded
- 1:40Speaker 3: all year. So those are your three to do's, because
- 1:42Speaker 3: it doesn't sound like you're gonna have any money to
- 1:44Speaker 3: spend unless you get their money off the books everything
- 1:47Speaker 3: that you're reading and here and so those two you
- 1:50Speaker 3: got to go. And then you see where you can
- 1:52Speaker 3: go around the margins to fill in. You're gonna need
- 1:55Speaker 3: a couple, uh, you need a couple of starters. You're
- 1:58Speaker 3: gonna need two. You're gonna need two right handed bats
- 2:00Speaker 3: because you're getting rid of to right handed bats because
- 2:02Speaker 3: you're very left handed heavy. So there's a lot of
- 2:05Speaker 3: things to do after you get rid of those three.
- 2:08Speaker 3: But you can't do anything to you get rid of
- 2:09Speaker 3: those three in the money.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Okay, well those are the three things, but how many
- 2:13Speaker 4: of those don't All three of them have no trade clauses,
- 2:15Speaker 4: so you're gonna like, how are you gonna get rid
- 2:18Speaker 4: of them?
- 2:19Speaker 2: Sounds like.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Okay with lifting that no trade if you're not gonna
- 2:23Speaker 3: put anything around them.
- 2:25Speaker 4: Yeah, but I mean Arnotto already had the shot. He
- 2:28Speaker 4: didn't do it. They were like, you were sending you
- 2:29Speaker 4: to Houston. I'm not doing that, Sonny Gray. You know,
- 2:33Speaker 4: he's kind of They were like, hey, Sonny, we can
- 2:35Speaker 4: move you. At the deadline he gave the on Wilson
- 2:37Speaker 4: Gaturers basically said I don't want to get traded, so
- 2:41Speaker 4: how do you move?
- 2:41Speaker 1: Like?
- 2:41Speaker 5: I get it, but how do you move? These guys?
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean all three of them are are looking
- 2:46Speaker 3: for a situation to win. I think Sonny is more
- 2:50Speaker 3: open to it than he now than he is in
- 2:52Speaker 3: the past because of the kind of direction.
- 2:54Speaker 2: He's seen everything going.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And but you know, Sonny's very particular on probably where
- 2:59Speaker 3: he wants to go and my guests, and I think
- 3:02Speaker 3: so is Nolan. So they're gonna have you know, you
- 3:05Speaker 3: only have the few suitors that they might have, and
- 3:09Speaker 3: then it's just trying to find a deal that you know,
- 3:11Speaker 3: everybody's okay with. Contraras is one of those guys that,
- 3:15Speaker 3: with what he was able to do at first base
- 3:18Speaker 3: last year was really a pleasant surprise. I'm not surprised
- 3:21Speaker 3: he's able to do it because this dude loves to
- 3:23Speaker 3: play baseball and he loves to compete. So him being
- 3:25Speaker 3: a good first baseman or being you know, very serviceable
- 3:28Speaker 3: over there's not a surprise. But I think he opened
- 3:30Speaker 3: up to my eyes that he's able to do some things. Besides,
- 3:33Speaker 3: you just catch so you know, obviously, if they find
- 3:36Speaker 3: the right fit, those guys will accept it. But like
- 3:39Speaker 3: you said, it's finding the right fit and going from there.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But all of them have a very short list of
- 3:44Speaker 3: the places they'll wave their note.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Trade. I'm pretty sure a.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Right, so Sonny, they tried to trade him and had
- 3:51Speaker 5: a trade and Sony said no. Last year what has
- 3:54Speaker 5: changed for him is it? Is it the fact that
- 3:58Speaker 5: you know, he had a year to say okay, I
- 4:01Speaker 5: was the leader of this team. I you know, Wayne
- 4:04Speaker 5: Wright had left, it was a chance for him to
- 4:06Speaker 5: like be that guy that he kind of signed on
- 4:08Speaker 5: to be. Or is it something that he knows that,
- 4:12Speaker 5: all right, well, we're not going to win here, or
- 4:14Speaker 5: they're not going to try to win. Whether they are
- 4:16Speaker 5: or aren't, is it really up to him and that
- 4:18Speaker 5: that's what's changed, is the fact that he's now closer
- 4:21Speaker 5: to the end of his contract.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I think it's a little bit of everything.
- 4:25Speaker 3: But I think Sonny is such a creature of habit
- 4:27Speaker 3: that trading him in the middle of years just.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Sounds miserable to him. There's really no other way.
- 4:31Speaker 5: To say it.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Sonny's when Sonny gets comfortable and gets in his rhythm
- 4:35Speaker 3: and he's doing his thing, he doesn't like for that
- 4:37Speaker 3: to be upended. So now, hey, next year, I'm going
- 4:42Speaker 3: to be more open to it, because hey, I'm at
- 4:44Speaker 3: the end of my contract. Hey, you know, it's a
- 4:46Speaker 3: full season with a new team. I can go in
- 4:49Speaker 3: there and I can really you know, seement myself into
- 4:51Speaker 3: the in the culture of the team and what they got.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Going on, and with a chance to win. When you
- 4:56Speaker 2: get trade in the.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Middle of the season, we all know that you uproot
- 4:59Speaker 3: everything you're you know, kids are in school, they have this,
- 5:01Speaker 3: and that Sonny's you know, loves his family. He doesn't
- 5:04Speaker 3: didn't want to uproot him in the middle of the season.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So I think, you know, obviously, if he gets a
- 5:08Speaker 3: chance to do it in the offseason and go to
- 5:10Speaker 3: a place he wants to be that fits the personality
- 5:13Speaker 3: he wants, lifestyle he wants, I think he's definitely open
- 5:16Speaker 3: to it.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Lance, what do you see happening with Trek's school? Do
- 5:22Speaker 1: you think that this is a and I'm not trying
- 5:24Speaker 1: to ask you to speak for the ill Itch family
- 5:27Speaker 1: or the Tigers or anything like that. Does it make
- 5:29Speaker 1: sense to sign him to a long term deal and
- 5:32Speaker 1: build around him or do you think you'll see him
- 5:34Speaker 1: in a different uniform?
- 5:37Speaker 3: So I think it makes sense to do that. The
- 5:39Speaker 3: question is what are you willing to go to money
- 5:41Speaker 3: wise to make it happen. But you cannot let him
- 5:44Speaker 3: get to free agency because I don't think they're going
- 5:46Speaker 3: to go to the money that other people will to
- 5:49Speaker 3: make sure he's on their team. So if you know
- 5:51Speaker 3: that you're never going to get there in free agency,
- 5:53Speaker 3: then you have to do what's right for your team
- 5:56Speaker 3: and fan base and try to get as much as
- 5:58Speaker 3: you can for him. Now, I don't know what that
- 6:00Speaker 3: package will be. I'm sure it would be pretty darn good.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And then you're able to use, you know, the prospects
- 6:06Speaker 3: you get with you know, free agency to really make
- 6:10Speaker 3: your team a hole. But if you lose him for
- 6:12Speaker 3: nothing and then don't match whatever, and you don't plan
- 6:14Speaker 3: on matching what's going to be given to him, then
- 6:17Speaker 3: you got to think right now is the time to
- 6:19Speaker 3: time to move on from him and get as much
- 6:22Speaker 3: as you possibly can for him.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Hey, l's what is it about? Heine Bloom and every
- 6:26Speaker 4: team he goes to he has to make all these trades.
- 6:28Speaker 4: So he was in Boston, he gets the big job. Oh,
- 6:30Speaker 4: you have to trade Mookie, right, and then he comes
- 6:33Speaker 4: to Saint Louis and you have to trade dron Out
- 6:34Speaker 4: or you have to trade conturers. You have to trade
- 6:36Speaker 4: Gray before we'll give you any money. Sign Bloom going
- 6:39Speaker 4: to these owners and say, hey, I'm your guy, man,
- 6:41Speaker 4: I'll trade everybody and then we can start and try
- 6:44Speaker 4: to win with no payroll. Like, why does he keep
- 6:45Speaker 4: getting stuck in these spots?
- 6:47Speaker 3: It sounds like everybody tabs him as a guy to
- 6:50Speaker 3: come in and clean up everybody's mess, right. I don't
- 6:52Speaker 3: know why he's putting himself in tough situations. I mean,
- 6:56Speaker 3: when you go to Boston and you get taped with
- 6:58Speaker 3: trading Mookie Batch right away, it puts you in a
- 7:00Speaker 3: bad spot. I think this time around in Saint Louis,
- 7:03Speaker 3: it's in a it's in a little different pattern for
- 7:06Speaker 3: him where he's trying to use the ability to you know,
- 7:09Speaker 3: go to the future. They've done a good job of
- 7:11Speaker 3: of racking up prospects in the minor leagues right now.
- 7:14Speaker 2: If they're able to shed a.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Little bit of money here and and use that to
- 7:18Speaker 3: build around some of these guys, I think they've got
- 7:20Speaker 3: a really good chance of being you know what.
- 7:23Speaker 5: Uh.
- 7:23Speaker 3: You know, in the central, you can you can do
- 7:25Speaker 3: some do some things in the Central that you can't
- 7:27Speaker 3: in other divisions. So if they're able to you know,
- 7:30Speaker 3: set a little bit this money add on to the
- 7:32Speaker 3: roster and spots that they need to with, uh, you know,
- 7:35Speaker 3: some platoon guys, some older rotation guys or bounce back
- 7:40Speaker 3: rotation guys, they could be something in the central that
- 7:43Speaker 3: could be you know, not fun to deal with, especially
- 7:45Speaker 3: if they're young guys take over your your Mason Wins
- 7:48Speaker 3: got to keep keep doing his thing. Uh, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 3: weather Hold's got to come up and be who they think.
- 7:53Speaker 2: He's going to be.
- 7:54Speaker 3: You need, you need Victor Scott, you need Burley. Those
- 7:57Speaker 3: guys to be what you think they can be. And
- 8:00Speaker 3: then you're adding guys around him that can help them
- 8:02Speaker 3: become that where you don't have to put too much
- 8:04Speaker 3: pressure on them every day.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Your to do list is trading three guys that are
- 8:08Speaker 5: owed a lot of money out of an organization.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Between the three of them.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, that's a lot of money that the Cardinals
- 8:17Speaker 5: are gonna eat because Sonny Gray is the most value there,
- 8:19Speaker 5: because no team's gonna be like, oh, Wilson Contraris, that's awesome.
- 8:23Speaker 5: Didn't he just win a World Series with the Cubs?
- 8:25Speaker 5: Like it's a different Wilson Contreras that that they're getting,
- 8:29Speaker 5: Like he might probably won't even catch. I couldn't believe
- 8:32Speaker 5: the Cardinals picked him up as a catcher. But like,
- 8:35Speaker 5: you're eating a lot of money for a team that
- 8:37Speaker 5: hasn't want to spend, hasn't want to suspend money.
- 8:40Speaker 2: So are these just dumps.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Are these just salary dumps?
- 8:44Speaker 3: It sounds like there's gonna be a little bit of
- 8:46Speaker 3: salary dump in this. It sounds like, Hey, what arbitration
- 8:50Speaker 3: guy that we know that we don't want or we
- 8:52Speaker 3: don't see building around or signing long term that we
- 8:55Speaker 3: can we can kind of, uh, you know, stick with
- 8:58Speaker 3: them in a trade to see if we can get
- 9:00Speaker 3: more value form or maybe even pay less money. So
- 9:03Speaker 3: it's going to be interesting how they go about doing it.
- 9:06Speaker 3: I'm from the for all of it. It's like, hey,
- 9:08Speaker 3: you only have those guys on the book. You don't
- 9:11Speaker 3: have a whole lot of money ode to anyone after guaranteed.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Why don't we use the little bit of.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Money that we have to go around the margins right
- 9:18Speaker 3: here and say hey, let's at a start, or let's
- 9:20Speaker 3: add to helleslie back this and that next thing. You know,
- 9:23Speaker 3: you add twenty five million dollars to this payroll, and
- 9:25Speaker 3: I think you've got a team that can can somewhat
- 9:27Speaker 3: do some more damage in the central now with those guys.
- 9:32Speaker 3: So if I were in charge, I'm saying, hey, let's
- 9:35Speaker 3: figure out how to build around these guys and see
- 9:37Speaker 3: what we can do. For one two more years because
- 9:39Speaker 3: I don't have anything on the books after this, so
- 9:41Speaker 3: I'm not really killing myself for you know, four or
- 9:44Speaker 3: five six years. Let's use what we got and let's
- 9:47Speaker 3: instead of eating money, let's let's throw a little bit
- 9:50Speaker 3: more at it and see what we can do with
- 9:51Speaker 3: this group.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Lance, I asked you earlier about Trek School, but I
- 9:55Speaker 1: wanted to ask your opinion on why guys like Shane
- 9:57Speaker 1: Bieber he is elected to opt into his contract with
- 10:00Speaker 1: the Toronto Jays. Obviously Toronto a heck of a year
- 10:03Speaker 1: and going all the way to the World Series. Why
- 10:05Speaker 1: do you think a Shane Bieber type would make that choice?
- 10:10Speaker 5: Uh?
- 10:10Speaker 3: You know, I don't know, because you know everyone says,
- 10:12Speaker 3: you get to Toronto and you want out. I'm guessing
- 10:14Speaker 3: when he got there he just loved it. Shane's a
- 10:17Speaker 3: person that, you know, just knowing him a little bit
- 10:19Speaker 3: like I do. When he likes the place, he I mean,
- 10:22Speaker 3: he'll go go back. I'm sure he might even got
- 10:24Speaker 3: better offers for two years than he did to go
- 10:29Speaker 3: back to Cleveland. So I'm guessing he liked the guys,
- 10:31Speaker 3: like the group. Maybe he knows if he goes and
- 10:34Speaker 3: keeps you know, becoming or keeps pitching and doing the
- 10:37Speaker 3: things that he's capable of, that that could be a
- 10:39Speaker 3: place that, uh, you know, could be a long term fit.
- 10:43Speaker 3: You just never know. But with the run they have
- 10:46Speaker 3: in that group that they have, I can see why
- 10:48Speaker 3: he liked it and wanted to be back. And you
- 10:51Speaker 3: just never know what free agency is going to do either.
- 10:54Speaker 3: So maybe it was one of those things where I'm
- 10:56Speaker 3: content where I'm at. I know what the money is
- 10:58Speaker 3: gonna be, and I'm okay with it, and I like
- 11:01Speaker 3: the team that's around me, and you don't really know
- 11:03Speaker 3: once you get into free agency.
- 11:08Speaker 5: Jeez, that's true.
- 11:10Speaker 4: That's true.
- 11:10Speaker 5: True.
- 11:11Speaker 4: All right, I gotta ask you Lance before we let
- 11:13Speaker 4: you go. I'm going way off topic here. I know
- 11:16Speaker 4: you're in Oxford this weekend, so you're talking about all
- 11:18Speaker 4: this money to spend. How much are you going to
- 11:20Speaker 4: contribute to Lane coming to Gainesville and help get him
- 11:23Speaker 4: the heck out of Oxford where you guys can't even
- 11:25Speaker 4: sell out the stadium, okay, because like he's embarrassed, you're embarrassed.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Every you know, rebel fan even though you're a rebel,
- 11:32Speaker 4: but you have a bear mask.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Whatever.
- 11:34Speaker 4: How much money are you going to contribute to help
- 11:37Speaker 4: Lane pack up his stuff and get him to Gainesville
- 11:40Speaker 4: or as we're now gonna call it, Lanesville.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:43Speaker 3: See, I'm not giving him a dime to leave. You know,
- 11:46Speaker 3: I might be throwing some stuff to keep him to stay.
- 11:49Speaker 3: The things that he's able to that he's been able
- 11:51Speaker 3: to do in Oxford have been great. You know, the
- 11:53Speaker 3: community loves him down there. He's winning games, He's creating
- 11:57Speaker 3: his own legacy down there. So you know, some people
- 11:59Speaker 3: like to create their own legacies and some people like to,
- 12:02Speaker 3: you know, go to the highest bidder.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So we'll see what he likes to do.
- 12:07Speaker 4: By the way, my son said he saw you and
- 12:09Speaker 4: you didn't speak to him.
- 12:10Speaker 5: So that's cool. Wit, A big league of kid and
- 12:15Speaker 5: a big league of kid.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Fellow, a big league rate A big league Wait, a
- 12:20Speaker 4: big league of kid. That's cool.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Did I really see he said he saw you?
- 12:24Speaker 4: I mean, how do you think I knew you were
- 12:25Speaker 4: at the game?
- 12:26Speaker 2: Well? I just figured everyone knew.
- 12:28Speaker 3: You know, when you get when you go into college
- 12:30Speaker 3: Hall of Fame, baby, hey da one of those.
- 12:36Speaker 4: That's because I'm a skip college. But when there's only
- 12:38Speaker 4: thirteen thousand people at a game. You know. By the
- 12:43Speaker 4: by the way, I've been to whatever it's called, John
- 12:45Speaker 4: Hemingway Stadium, Ernest Hemingway Stadium, John Medium And also, by
- 12:51Speaker 4: the way, like for old MISSUS fan base to say
- 12:54Speaker 4: that was one of the biggest wins, congratulations, you beat
- 12:56Speaker 4: a three and sixteen with an interim coach and their
- 12:58Speaker 4: top three receivers out. Bravo.
- 13:01Speaker 2: I didn't think it was one of the biggest wins.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I thought we played probably a c D game and
- 13:05Speaker 3: you guys played your A game and we won, you know,
- 13:08Speaker 3: so we did what we were supposed to and then
- 13:10Speaker 3: that's all you Wow, this time of the year, win
- 13:12Speaker 3: the games you're supposed to win.
- 13:13Speaker 2: That's what we did.
- 13:14Speaker 5: Wins.
- 13:15Speaker 2: A win is a win, Yeah, right right on pace
- 13:18Speaker 2: to be in the playoffs, and that's what we're all about.
- 13:21Speaker 5: I like value as much as the next person. But
- 13:23Speaker 5: this bet MGM's future. The twenty six n L pennant
- 13:28Speaker 5: A J plus fifty five hundred. Would you even put
- 13:32Speaker 5: a dollar on it?
- 13:34Speaker 4: No, I got no change.
- 13:38Speaker 5: I don't. They might be, they might be. They might
- 13:41Speaker 5: be a last place team if they do exactly what
- 13:44Speaker 5: we just talked about. The pirates are gonna roll some
- 13:47Speaker 5: pitching out there. I'm not saying the Pirates are win
- 13:50Speaker 5: win in the Central, let alone the NL pennant. Like,
- 13:56Speaker 5: I'm not even taking plus fifty five hundred on the
- 13:58Speaker 5: NL for the n Central. This is the NL pennant. No, no,
- 14:06Speaker 5: I'll give you the dollar, Alana. You can give it
- 14:10Speaker 5: for your your petsuit. Barker. I forget what it's called.
- 14:13Speaker 1: The first of all, my foundation is called Parian Foundation.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Thank you. It was for dogs. I knew what it was.
- 14:21Speaker 5: I knew it was for dogs. But no, the Cardinals,
- 14:24Speaker 5: I'm not touching any of that. I got to see
- 14:25Speaker 5: the rest of the list too. But the Cardinals at
- 14:27Speaker 5: plus fifty five hundred.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Who do you got one in the Central? And then
- 14:36Speaker 1: who do you got win in the NL? Pennant?
- 14:39Speaker 5: I mean, I still think the I still think the Brewers,
- 14:41Speaker 5: the Reds, and the Cubs are going to be the
- 14:45Speaker 5: top three teams up there. I think the Reds can
- 14:48Speaker 5: can make some moves to maybe win the Central if
- 14:51Speaker 5: everyone else doesn't make any moves. But I think it's
- 14:53Speaker 5: the other two and then the National League. I think
- 14:57Speaker 5: it's a short I think it's a short list of
- 14:59Speaker 5: the teams who to be there. I think the Braves
- 15:01Speaker 5: are probably the best value because I think they're going
- 15:04Speaker 5: to be a little lower and you're going to find
- 15:06Speaker 5: some more value in there that they normally wouldn't give you.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Remember when the Cardinals were good, Remember when they mattered? Yeah,
- 15:15Speaker 1: I know it seems like it. Though an exclusive Missouri
