A tragic and volatile incident unfolded in Philadelphia last week when Joseph Smithers, reportedly in a mental health crisis, was fatally shot by Officer Azieme Lindsey outside a hospital. Smithers’ girlfriend also suffered a neck graze. The call began with a family member fearing suicide; Smithers had been asked to leave the hospital the day before. Officers found him at a bus stop, where he allegedly pulled a legally registered handgun from his waistband before being shot.
