Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So we were just talking about Marco Jansen and also
- 0:02Speaker 1: Kegisa Rabada, and similar to what's going on, it's been
- 0:05Speaker 1: a bright blue sky day here, but still plenty of
- 0:07Speaker 1: action always after a play, plenty.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Of things going on.
- 0:11Speaker 1: A lot of remedial work, clearly, but there's also some
- 0:14Speaker 1: remedial work, Dan, with Marco Jansen and Kegisa Rabada.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good segue, Courtney.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Yeah, Jansen had some sort of back stiffness, and as
- 0:23Speaker 3: the South African bowling coach, Bidboda, said after play in
- 0:27Speaker 3: a somewhat eventful press conference.
- 0:30Speaker 2: going into too many details. It was an intriguing press conference.
- 0:32Speaker 2: He wasn't quite at 100%. No.
- 0:34Speaker 3: But, yeah, he sort of accepted that, you know, deep
- 0:37Speaker 3: into a series, there's going to be some running repairs.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Rabada playing his second test back in 12 months, back-to-back tests.
- 0:44Speaker 3: You know, they enforced the follow-on, so he held quite
- 0:47Speaker 3: a bit consecutively there in Port Elizabeth. He had, you know,
- 0:52Speaker 3: his issues seemed to be seemingly separate. He had stomach cramps,
- 0:54Speaker 3: is what the South African bowling coach said. So he
- 0:56Speaker 3: knew what The short of it is that the Australians
- 1:01Speaker 3: were fortunate in that they had favourable batting conditions, the
- 1:04Speaker 3: blue skies.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, they had good batting conditions. A very flat pitch,
- 1:09Speaker 2: which obviously was a big discussion point yesterday.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Not a lot in terms of the Australian decision to
- 1:13Speaker 4: do bowl first. It was a beautiful day. You can
- 1:16Speaker 4: still see the remnants of that blue sky. It was
- 1:18Speaker 4: not a cloud in the sky. Stunning day. Got quite
- 1:21Speaker 4: warm late in the afternoon. Walked around the ground a
- 1:22Speaker 4: little bit. And then a labouring South African sack. But
- 1:27Speaker 4: for all that, it's one thing to.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Play in favorable positions. You then have to make the
- 1:30Speaker 2: most of it. And I give Australians sort of an
- 1:32Speaker 2: 8 or 9 out of 10 for making the most
- 1:33Speaker 2: of it. But the only thing is that they didn't
- 1:35Speaker 2: quite go on and have the absolute daddy hundreds that
- 1:37Speaker 2: they could have. But they've moved the game towards their ascendancy. And...
- 1:44Speaker 2: There were a couple of dicey moments. There was a
- 1:46Speaker 2: mix-up early in Kerry and.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Inglis' innings.
- 1:48Speaker 2: They were batting for nine on. They were 4-1, 74
- 1:53Speaker 2: or so when.
- 1:53Speaker 5: It was almost a run out. Inglis went to push
- 1:56Speaker 5: one to mid-wicket. Kerry was almost halfway down the pitch.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Inglis called him back. Ackerman had a shy miss. Had
- 2:02Speaker 5: he hit it, Kerry would have been long gone. Inglis
- 2:06Speaker 5: had one from Harmer, which he almost chopped on. It's
- 2:08Speaker 5: like he said, a French cut, which could have easily
- 2:11Speaker 5: fallen onto his stumps.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Inglis was a bit shaky early, but then he really worked.
- 2:16Speaker 5: Through the gears and ultimately, you know, he's moved to
- 2:18Speaker 5: within sight of a second Test 100.
- 2:20Speaker 2: It's the first time he'd reached 50 in a Test
- 2:22Speaker 2: inning since his debut century at Gaul last year, Josh Inglis.
- 2:26Speaker 2: He's had an interesting journey as a cricketer. There were
- 2:28Speaker 2: probably periods there where he was challenging Kerry for the
- 2:30Speaker 2: mantle as Test keeper. He, of course, took over the
- 2:34Speaker 2: gloves mid-World Cup, one game into the 23rd World Cup.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 2: The Sri Lanka in his innings there looked like the
- 2:42Speaker 2: start of something that was going to be a genuine
- 2:44Speaker 2: bona fide option in the middle order. But he struggled
- 2:46Speaker 2: in the West Indies that one test he had. He
- 2:48Speaker 2: struggled in the Ashes. A couple went ahead of him
- 2:51Speaker 2: in the Equinor. They went for Bo Webster. And then
- 2:54Speaker 2: he had the injuries. But he's come in at the
- 2:57Speaker 2: late reprieve, of course, through Steve Smith. And in the end,
- 3:00Speaker 2: I think this is the story of the day from
- 3:01Speaker 2: Shane's perspective. They've managed to do it in the absence
- 3:04Speaker 2: of Steve Smith. And look, you don't want to get
- 3:06Speaker 2: ahead of yourself because no one's made 100 yet. They're
- 3:08Speaker 2: not there yet. There's a long way to go in
- 3:09Speaker 2: this game. But it did feel like, and we're not
- 3:12Speaker 2: talking kids yet. It wasn't Cooper Connolly. It's not 23-year-olds.
- 3:15Speaker 2: But it's guys in their late 20s and early 30s
- 3:17Speaker 2: who got the job done and did a little bit
- 3:19Speaker 2: of a change in the game. Yeah, and you're right.
- 3:22Speaker 1: With Steve Smith looking on, I think you reported today
- 3:25Speaker 1: that you may have seen him come and go from
- 3:27Speaker 1: the ground today. We get some news through late about
- 3:29Speaker 1: the neck injury, which is what we.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Expected, effectively. It's a cervix.
- 3:35Speaker 1: The exact term is something to do with the cervical
- 3:39Speaker 1: joint of the cervical joint neck situation. But Australia expects
- 3:45Speaker 1: him to be fine, go through rehab, back for the
- 3:48Speaker 1: New Zealand series, which... You know, that's only about six weeks'
- 3:51Speaker 1: time that begins. So there's clearly some time.
- 3:54Speaker 2: But you're right.
- 3:55Speaker 1: It did look like the future of the Australian batting
- 3:58Speaker 1: order or certainly parts of it, elements of it. Matthew
- 4:01Speaker 1: Renshaw back up to open alongside Travis Head. I thought
- 4:04Speaker 1: they were, you know, they rode their luck early as well.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And sometimes you need luck. I think that's the point
- 4:09Speaker 1: that's been made. Sometimes you do need luck. And I
- 4:11Speaker 1: think luck largely went Australia's way today with the bat
- 4:14Speaker 1: in those sort of 50-50 decisions.
- 4:16Speaker 2: There was a couple of close reviews. Yep.
- 4:19Speaker 1: In other circumstances, could have gone the other way. But
- 4:23Speaker 1: with that, now they have an opportunity to bat. Conditions,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I think, it's expected to say good tomorrow. We just
- 4:29Speaker 1: had a beautiful blue sky day here today. So we're
- 4:32Speaker 1: expecting good conditions tomorrow. If they can bat for the
- 4:36Speaker 1: first 30 minutes, get themselves through, and who knows what happens.
- 4:38Speaker 2: If Rabada is still unwell, if.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Jansen stiffens up further, because he's had a long day
- 4:45Speaker 1: out there today, and this is a cumulative effect of, Basically,
- 4:49Speaker 1: three tests work in a tight fashion. They might be
- 4:52Speaker 1: able to get away and put a significant margin into it.
- 4:54Speaker 1: We can't not talk about Narnas, though. I know you
- 4:57Speaker 1: touched on it and where he's at. For mine, it
- 5:00Speaker 1: looked like you walked to the crease.
- 5:01Speaker 2: He looked like a man condemned.
- 5:04Speaker 1: There's debate as to whether he was going to play
- 5:06Speaker 1: regardless of what happened with Steve Smith.
- 5:09Speaker 2: He was here.
- 5:09Speaker 1: He had been getting sass in his 30s, but we
- 5:11Speaker 1: saw him here on Sunday. He looked anything but convincing.
- 5:14Speaker 2: He just didn't look. confident at all. He looked out
- 5:18Speaker 2: of shape.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Each of his teammates bowled.
- 5:22Speaker 2: I think Webster both got him, I think, in the nets.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Even the captain, Hummins, I think, got him in the
- 5:27Speaker 1: nets on.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Sunday as well. He looked out of sorts.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Today, it was really difficult to watch. No conviction, no confidence.
- 5:37Speaker 1: The shot he got out to was a nothing shot.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Feet didn't move.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Normally, Marnus can labour when he's walking off the field.
- 5:44Speaker 1: He laboured at the crease for a second, but I'm
- 5:46Speaker 1: really seen a man get off swifter as though he
- 5:49Speaker 1: didn't necessarily want to be there. So it's a really
- 5:52Speaker 1: tricky situation. I think you're right. I think he may
- 5:57Speaker 1: not get to bat again.
- 5:57Speaker 2: In this test.
- 5:58Speaker 1: We will see because there is a long way to go.
- 6:00Speaker 1: But it could be an extended stint.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Kerry O'Keefe, the.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Fox cricket expert, the former Australian spinner, said afterwards, the
- 6:07Speaker 1: problem is when he goes, if you go back to
- 6:09Speaker 1: Sheffield Shield, it's a long way back for someone who's
- 6:11Speaker 1: had a couple of chances there.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah. And more than a couple of chances, to be fair. Well,
- 6:16Speaker 2: I think ultimately, you know, you touched on man-to-man damage.
- 6:20Speaker 5: He did look like a man-to-man gallop. I mean, I'm
- 6:21Speaker 5: not speaking too dramatically. It was very sombre throughout the–
- 6:24Speaker 5: I'm speaking pretty dramatically. But he was very sombre around
- 6:27Speaker 5: even when he was batting out the nets earlier in
- 6:28Speaker 5: the day before he.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Was going to hit. He was going to hit yesterday,
- 6:31Speaker 2: given Australia's start of the day, start of his innings. Look,
- 6:35Speaker 2: I think, in some respects, it's not trippy at all.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I mean, the Aussies were not– he was not going
- 6:40Speaker 2: to be– he was never going– he probably wouldn't have
- 6:44Speaker 2: played this test if it was a home test. The
- 6:45Speaker 2: Aussie selectors have effectively conceded that or hinted at that strongly.
- 6:49Speaker 2: So has Pat Cummins. It would have been a different
- 6:51Speaker 2: case had this been a home series. Although they always
- 6:53Speaker 2: said a lot of moving parts, he was one that
- 6:55Speaker 2: they at least knew was going to be fit. But now,
- 6:57Speaker 2: particularly given other guys have stood up, I mean, even
- 6:59Speaker 2: had they not– probably would have been done regardless. And
- 7:03Speaker 2: I think as you touched on, and you touched on
- 7:04Speaker 2: Kerry O'Keefe's comments with Marnus, the problem now is that, see,
- 7:09Speaker 2: what was supposed to happen with Marnus was that, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 2: after that long run leading to the West Indies last year,
- 7:15Speaker 2: where when he was umped up from the World Test Championship,
- 7:16Speaker 2: he got moved up to open, and then he got
- 7:17Speaker 2: dropped from the West Indies to where he was the
- 7:19Speaker 2: spare batter in that tour. The theory was that he
- 7:22Speaker 2: would go back to shield cricket, play well, get back,
- 7:25Speaker 2: and then he'd be off to the races again. And briefly,
- 7:28Speaker 2: ever so briefly, it looked like that was the case here.
- 7:30Speaker 2: He made runs in Brisbane and in Adelaide. That's right.
- 7:33Speaker 2: During the accident. Sorry, in Perth and Brisbane. Perth and Brisbane.
- 7:37Speaker 2: He was on that run chasing Trevor's head and then
- 7:40Speaker 2: Brisbane made runs. He didn't go on with it. Struggled
- 7:43Speaker 2: in Adelaide. Struggled in Melbourne.
- 7:45Speaker 5: Some starts in Sydney where England tried to get under
- 7:49Speaker 5: his skin a bit.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Had that broken thumb or finger in the back half
- 7:54Speaker 2: and he just has never been able to get that
- 7:56Speaker 2: foot to the ground. It's extraordinary. I mean, I think
- 8:00Speaker 2: it's almost certain, but it's highly likely now that he's
- 8:06Speaker 2: made his last test century at he's 32, and his
- 8:09Speaker 2: last test century will have been before his 30th birthday
- 8:11Speaker 2: in September. You know what a completely rude right goes off,
- 8:15Speaker 2: but it is such a long way back. Wilson Kuwaja
- 8:19Speaker 2: did it. You know, the guys can occasionally get second
- 8:22Speaker 2: and third chances, and you don't want to– a lot
- 8:24Speaker 2: can happen, but– how can they justify this way? He's
- 8:30Speaker 2: going to have to bang the door down now. Like,
- 8:32Speaker 2: he's absolutely, you know, you won't see him until, I mean,
- 8:35Speaker 2: the Ashes are the absolute earliest. You won't see him
- 8:37Speaker 2: against New Zealand. He won't go to India. I wouldn't
- 8:40Speaker 2: have thought he'd play the 150th anniversary test either. So
- 8:43Speaker 2: you're probably giving him at least 10 tests with others
- 8:45Speaker 2: and they will all need to realistically, they're going to
- 8:47Speaker 2: need to recycle through a few and they're going to
- 8:49Speaker 2: need to fail. They're going to need to have the
- 8:50Speaker 2: chance if it's Curtis Patterson who comes back. For guys here,
- 8:53Speaker 2: I mean, realistically, Smith, as that statement touched on, they're
- 8:55Speaker 2: going to try to get him available for that series.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I actually just want to backtrack onto the Smith statement, though,
- 8:59Speaker 2: because I think that the backstory to this is the
- 9:02Speaker 2: context is critical. I mean, this has got to be
- 9:04Speaker 2: put against the backdrop. It's very true. We alluded to
- 9:06Speaker 2: this last night, but Tom Morris, our Pressbox colleague with
- 9:12Speaker 2: Seven and SEN, very strong... in his reporting on this,
- 9:17Speaker 2: there'd been disappointment and frustration, or sort of frustration and
- 9:21Speaker 2: even anger was the word he used with reference to
- 9:26Speaker 2: sections of the Australian Tory party around how everything played
- 9:29Speaker 2: out with Smith and towards his withdrawal. So I thought
- 9:33Speaker 2: it was very, very interesting the timing that Cricket Australia
- 9:36Speaker 2: put out a statement only after that report. I mean,
- 9:39Speaker 2: the fact that they went into detail about Smith and
- 9:41Speaker 2: the fact that we also found out subsequently that Smith
- 9:44Speaker 2: Smith had these scans days ago. He did, like, leave
- 9:47Speaker 2: the ground early today. I'm told that was not for
- 9:51Speaker 2: these scans. He had them days ago. It was for
- 9:54Speaker 2: a separate engagement. Somewhat vague, but nonetheless. Yes. In any case,
- 10:01Speaker 2: you know, they knew the significance. Now, I can understand
- 10:04Speaker 2: not telling the public anything and the opposition, the extent
- 10:07Speaker 2: of the injury, if you think he's going to play.
- 10:09Speaker 2: That's sort of, that's that sport. That's the way it works.
- 10:11Speaker 2: But once they knew he wasn't going to play, why
- 10:14Speaker 2: did it take them more than a day to tell everyone? Why,
- 10:17Speaker 2: in my view, did it take them more than a day?
- 10:19Speaker 2: Because they realised this situation had suddenly become very big
- 10:22Speaker 2: on them. There was angst. Pat Cummins, his comments at
- 10:25Speaker 2: the toss, did not suggest a particularly happy camp or
- 10:30Speaker 2: did not suggest there was a lot of sympathy for
- 10:32Speaker 2: Steve Smith and what he'd been through. Mitchell Stark played
- 10:35Speaker 2: the straightest of bats and certainly didn't defer to sort
- 10:38Speaker 2: of love and care for Steve Smith yesterday. And I
- 10:41Speaker 2: think then with Tom's report, I think they realised they've
- 10:44Speaker 2: got to nip this in the bud. They've got to
- 10:45Speaker 2: give the impression, no, there is actually something serious. And
- 10:47Speaker 2: we know that it was an injury. We don't know
- 10:49Speaker 2: the extent of the injury. They didn't go chapter reverse
- 10:51Speaker 2: for the extent of the injury. But the subplot to
- 10:53Speaker 2: this is fascinating. It was an interesting PR exercise. Had
- 10:58Speaker 2: we been standing here in Australia, been bowled out for
- 11:00Speaker 2: 140 and South Africa was already in some second innings
- 11:02Speaker 2: and leading by 320, And Steve, as it happened, it
- 11:06Speaker 2: would be on for young and old, as we know.
- 11:08Speaker 2: As it's happened, Australia has done very well in the
- 11:11Speaker 2: absence of Steve Smith.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And fought back exceptionally well yesterday when they were under
- 11:14Speaker 1: significant trouble after an awful first session to get themselves
- 11:19Speaker 1: out of trouble.
- 11:20Speaker 2: But I don't think we should– and so they might
- 11:23Speaker 2: well get away with it. Maybe it'll be the making
- 11:25Speaker 2: of this team in a degree. And it will become
- 11:28Speaker 2: a great victory because they've done it with the adversity
- 11:29Speaker 2: and with the– we have to speak to Steve Smith,
- 11:33Speaker 2: who this tour was so much built around. Yes. I mean,
- 11:36Speaker 2: we are at Newlands. Tomorrow is day three of the
- 11:38Speaker 2: Cape Town Test. Eight years old. Eight years old. And
- 11:42Speaker 2: Steve Smith has been, you know, he's been cast into
- 11:44Speaker 2: the shadows. And that's not by design. And it's not
- 11:49Speaker 2: Steve Smith's fault, you could say, per se. I mean,
- 11:52Speaker 2: whether he could have played through or not, I don't know.
- 11:55Speaker 2: He will know.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But in the end, it's worked out for Australia. So,
- 11:58Speaker 1: you know, we'll wait and see. He's in a world
- 12:03Speaker 1: of pain. Marnus has had a very challenging day. The
- 12:06Speaker 1: South Africans have had a challenging day. It's been a
- 12:08Speaker 1: little bit of a challenging podcast to record. But we've
- 12:11Speaker 1: got there. Thanks as always for your expert insight, Stan.
- 12:14Speaker 1: Cannot wait to see what day three brings us. Looking
- 12:16Speaker 1: forward to reading your fine work at codesports.com.au. I'll have
- 12:20Speaker 1: a couple of pieces up myself at foxsports.com.au. But it
- 12:23Speaker 1: shapes us another ripping day tomorrow.
- 12:26Speaker 2: No Ben Stokes. Or Bratz in the racing. Or Bratz
- 12:29Speaker 2: in the racing. Great to be with you. Thank you.
