  SPEAKER_00: Hey there.
• 0:06
SPEAKER_00: Have you been busy lately?
• 0:08
SPEAKER_00: Or maybe I should ask.
• 0:09
SPEAKER_00: Have you ever been so focused on a goal that you almost miss the people right next to it?
• 0:14
SPEAKER_00: Maybe it was work, maybe it was a competition, maybe it was building something, chasing something, trying to prove something.
• 0:20
SPEAKER_00: And none of that is bad.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_00: Your goals matter, and excellence matters.
• 0:24
SPEAKER_00: Ambition can be a good thing.
• 0:26
SPEAKER_00: But sometimes life gives you a moment where your priorities become crystal clear.
• 0:33
SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Amazing Life Breakthrough.
• 0:36
SPEAKER_00: I'm Steve Klein, and today I want to talk about family, why family matters, why time with loved ones is more valuable than we realize, and why I still believe this simple truth.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_00: You never regret choosing people.
• 0:50
SPEAKER_00: This story goes back to a season in my life when I was very serious about dance competitions.
• 0:55
SPEAKER_00: I had traveled to Colorado for a sports competition, one of many events I attended at the time.
• 1:00
SPEAKER_00: Back then, my mindset was go to every event I could, get better, compete, improve, win.
• 1:07
SPEAKER_00: Every competition felt like a stepping stone towards something bigger.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_00: But something happened that weekend.
• 1:13
SPEAKER_00: I didn't make finals, and if you've ever competed at anything, you know that feeling, you work hard, you show up, you put yourself out there, and then the result doesn't go the way you hoped.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_00: So there I was, processing the disappointment when suddenly I realized something.
• 1:31
SPEAKER_00: I was only about an hour or two away from family I rarely got to see.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_00: Normally I might see these relatives once a year, maybe once every other year.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_00: And here I was, practically next door, spending a weekend stewing over a competition result, and something inside me shifted.
• 1:49
SPEAKER_00: Without overthinking it, I dropped everything.
• 1:52
SPEAKER_00: I hopped on a shuttle back to the airport, rented a car at one o'clock in the morning, and drove two hours through the night to see my aunt and uncle.
• 2:00
  SPEAKER_00: I was exhausted.
• 2:02
SPEAKER_00: So exhausted, in fact, that at one point on the highway I thought I saw a clown rowing a boat across the freeway.
• 2:09
SPEAKER_00: That's when I knew, okay, Steve, you need to pull over.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_00: So I stopped in a small town, got a couple hours of sleep, and then continued on.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_00: I made it just in time for Sunday morning.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_00: I went with my family to church, sitting right up front, trying desperately to stay awake while the pastors looked on, and afterward, back at their house, I collapsed for a much needed nap.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a long visit, maybe six or eight hours total before I had to head back to the airport, but it was enough enough to remind me what really matters, enough to remind me that some things are worth competing for, striving for, pushing yourself for, but some things are worth even more.
• 2:50
SPEAKER_00: Family is one of them.
• 2:52
SPEAKER_00: And it didn't happen just once.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: Another time, during another competition, I made a similar decision.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_00: I skipped the event entirely, even eating the cost of a prepaid weekend past because I knew time with family was more valuable.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_00: It was as if on the way to the event in mid-flight, I thought, wait a minute, what are you doing, Steve?
• 3:10
SPEAKER_00: You are going to be so close again.
• 3:12
SPEAKER_00: You need to be with family, those relatives you love.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_00: So I totally skipped the event and drove right away to see my relatives again.
• 3:21
SPEAKER_00: Now I want to pause here because this is not an anti-goal message.
• 3:25
SPEAKER_00: I believe in working hard, I believe in improving, I believe in showing up for commitments, I believe in doing excellent work.
• 3:32
SPEAKER_00: But ambition without priority can slowly make you miss the very life you're trying to build.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_00: And family has a way of grounding us.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_00: Research has long shown that close relationships are tied to physical and mental health, and family relationships, marriage, sibling bonds, and intergenerational ties can have an important influence on well-being across life.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_00: And that really makes sense, doesn't it?
• 3:57
  SPEAKER_00: I mean, don't you think?
• 3:59
  SPEAKER_00: Sort of ironic.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_00: Because family, at its best, gives us roots.
• 4:04
SPEAKER_00: It gives us identity, it reminds us where we came from, it gives us stories we don't get anywhere else.
• 4:10
SPEAKER_00: And when you're connected to your family, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, children, grandchildren, you're connected to something bigger than your calendar.
• 4:21
SPEAKER_00: You're connected to legacy, you're connected to your bloodline, you're connected to a family name carrying on, not just in a legal or historical sense, but in values, stories, memories, character, faith, humor, traditions, recipes, sayings, and the little moments that get passed down from one generation to the next.
• 4:42
SPEAKER_00: And I think this is especially powerful when grandparents are nearby or actively involved.
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: A 2026 American Psychological Association report highlighted research suggesting that caring for grandchildren may help older adults maintain stronger memory and verbal skills, while the University of Michigan's National Poll on Healthy Aging found many grandparents support grandchildren through childcare, babysitting, expenses, or other help.
• 5:11
SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, every family situation is different.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_00: Not every relationship is healthy, not every grandparent can be nearby, not every family is simple.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: But when there is love, safety, and connection available, it's worth protecting.
• 5:25
SPEAKER_00: Because proximity matters, presence matters, short visits matter, a six-hour visit can become a lifelong memory.
• 5:33
SPEAKER_00: A conversation at the kitchen table can mean more than another trophy.
• 5:37
SPEAKER_00: A Sunday morning with family can center your heart more than another weekend chasing applause.
• 5:44
SPEAKER_00: And this is where the breakthrough comes in.
• 5:46
SPEAKER_00: You don't have to abandon your goals to choose family.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_00: You just have to stop letting goals blind you to family.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes choosing family looks dramatic, like renting a car at one o'clock in the morning and driving through exhaustion.
• 5:59
SPEAKER_00: But most of the time it's much simpler than you might think.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_00: It's making the phone call you need to make, and it's showing up for dinner, or it's visiting while you still can, and it's putting the reunion on the calendar, it's taking your kids to see their grandparents, and it's telling your cousin, I want to make time.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_00: It's choosing people before the moment passes.
• 6:19
SPEAKER_00: Because someday the event won't matter as much as you thought it did.
• 6:23
SPEAKER_00: But the people the people will matter more than you realized.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_00: On Thursday, we're going to go deeper into this.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_00: I'll share a more personal story about family reunions and why being together while our loved ones are still here on this earth is so much better than waiting until you can't wait anymore, if you know what I mean.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_00: But for today, here's your simple listener challenge.
• 6:47
SPEAKER_00: Think of one family member you haven't connected with in a while.
• 6:50
  SPEAKER_00: Not someday.
• 6:51
SPEAKER_00: This week, call them, text them, send a voice message, put a visit on the calendar, invite them to coffee, make the first move.
• 6:59
SPEAKER_00: And as you do, remember this.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_00: You may regret missing a few events, you may regret chasing the wrong things, but you rarely regret choosing people.
• 7:08
