Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / John Carran: Jarden Economist and Investment Strategist on today's OCR decision

- 0:00Speaker 1: So Aranga Tamariki is getting rid of its target to
- 0:02Speaker 1: place fifty eight percent of the kids in its care
- 0:06Speaker 1: with wider faro or family, and it's also ditching a
- 0:10Speaker 1: target for investment with Maori organizations. Twenty three percent of
- 0:13Speaker 1: their funding was targeted for organizations with Maori and Ewe links.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The Minister of Children Karantur says this is part of
- 0:21Speaker 1: OT's safety first approach, and she said the targets were
- 0:24Speaker 1: outdated and went against the need not race directive, and
- 0:29Speaker 1: she was concerned whether the priority of Mari organizations were
- 0:32Speaker 1: getting in the way of the quality and efficacy of
- 0:34Speaker 1: the services being provided. And all of that makes sense
- 0:38Speaker 1: to me. The ingrained belief in our children's social workers
- 0:44Speaker 1: that kids are always better off if rehome with farno
- 0:47Speaker 1: or family always seemed counterfactual to me, because in many
- 0:51Speaker 1: cases the abuse directed at the kids was at the
- 0:53Speaker 1: hand of farno or family themselves, people that have been
- 0:58Speaker 1: raised by other people in their family, but at their
- 1:00Speaker 1: own parenting. So why would we give the kids back
- 1:03Speaker 1: to the people that raise the people who can't raise
- 1:05Speaker 1: the kids. It often seemed to me that children were
- 1:08Speaker 1: being thrown right back into the very cauldron we were
- 1:11Speaker 1: trying to help them escape from. And there have been
- 1:14Speaker 1: generations of examples, haven't there. Let's not forget baby Ru.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I haven't mentioned Ru's name for a while. He was
- 1:22Speaker 1: murdered in October twenty twenty three. Nobody has been charged
- 1:25Speaker 1: for killing him. There was anger then and anger now
- 1:27Speaker 1: when the police who were there when he suffered, Sorry
- 1:30Speaker 1: when the people who were there when he suffered did
- 1:32Speaker 1: not cooperate with the police. They were there, they say nothing.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Those people were and are Rosie Modonga, her partner, Dylan Ross,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and Ru's mother Storm Wall. They were, and they are
- 1:47Speaker 1: Ruse Farno. What happened people, It's been two years and
- 1:52Speaker 1: two Christmas is what happened two birthdays. The uplifting of
- 1:56Speaker 1: kids is a very serious thing, to be housed in
- 2:01Speaker 1: safe places with good people, but the history of Oranga
- 2:05Speaker 1: tamariki suggests that too many of the supposed saviors are
- 2:09Speaker 1: in fact predators hiding in plain sight. There is no
- 2:13Speaker 1: easy answer to this, which is why I've spoken about
- 2:16Speaker 1: this for decades. And the only thing we can have
- 2:20Speaker 1: is strong vigilance by our agencies, by Olanga tamariki. And
- 2:25Speaker 1: the only thing we can hope for is that good
- 2:28Speaker 1: people come forward to help the kids that have been abused.
