- 0:27I'm alive. Welcome to the All Bars No
- 0:30Philtre podcast. Live from the cabin kitchen.
- 0:33I'm Zach. He's Brad.
- 0:36There. Behind the scenes, we have a man
- 0:39who is in the top 1% for talking 1st and thinking later.
- 0:43He's researcher Cal. That can't be more true about
- 0:48him. But it's not even like he'll
- 0:49just talk first. He'll just, he'll impose himself
- 0:52over you. So even if he's not first, he's
- 0:55going to make sure he's the first person you hear.
- 0:58That's it. That's how we doing mate.
- 0:59Anyway, how we doing? You all right?
- 1:02I'm good. You know what, like I've had the
- 1:04right good day today. Like the sun's out.
- 1:06Got a little bit of Sunkist red forehead, maybe intentional,
- 1:09maybe not. I'm not sure if that'll show up
- 1:11on the on the video, but check us out on YouTube to see if it
- 1:15is. Research calcium, yes.
- 1:17But now I'm good. I've had a right good day.
- 1:20Been out for a nice hike in the peaks with the dog.
- 1:23So yeah, I'm I'm good. How are you?
- 1:25Thanks. I am it's over stimulated the
- 1:30right word. So just for context guys, we
- 1:32what, why are we now we are a minute into the pod.
- 1:34I'm going to come clean. We are trying, we're trying a
- 1:37new way to kind of present and produce the pod.
- 1:40And it's one of the reasons why we're not we were around last
- 1:43week. We're trying to iron things out.
- 1:45And I'm not going to lie to you, this is the first recording and
- 1:48I'm already. So if you do hear any technical
- 1:52glitches or anything like that, yeah, bear with us.
- 1:57We're hoping this is a better way.
- 1:58It's kind of go. But other than that, I am
- 2:00absolutely tipped off. It's been nice, long Easter
- 2:04weekend. Definitely drank far too much
- 2:07ale needed to, and we'll get into why very, very soon.
- 2:13But yeah, other than that, absolutely spot on weekend.
- 2:17Absolutely spot on. So what we've got in store for
- 2:20today's show, mate? Yeah.
- 2:23So obviously, as you said, we've been MIAI guess for for the last
- 2:28week. We normally like to do every
- 2:30week, don't we? But the last sort of month we've
- 2:31just sort of hit every fortnight.
- 2:33So we'll catch up on the NFL news.
- 2:36There's not been too much happening, but there has been a
- 2:38few big stories come through this last couple of weeks,
- 2:41hasn't there? And we will, as is normal now,
- 2:45we'll visit the world of rugby league in our I Can't Speak
- 2:49section, which I'd probably rather avoid.
- 2:52And we will check in with all of the balls across the world of
- 2:56sport. But yeah, I mean, should we get
- 3:00straight into the news? Yeah.
- 3:02So we've got some, I'd say some relatively big headlines this
- 3:06this time of year is relatively quiet because they're waiting
- 3:08for the pre draft stuff, which hopefully next week we're going
- 3:10to focus a bit a bit more on the draft itself.
- 3:12But they have their owners meetings and there's a few
- 3:15contract signings there and there, but realistically the
- 3:17rule change in the owners meetings of what's happening
- 3:20now. So there's been a few kind of
- 3:22rule tweaks and changes that we're going to have a look on,
- 3:25get a discussion on, see how what what our views on it are
- 3:28and, and, and yeah, go from that really.
- 3:30And starting from the top on this is there's been a bit of an
- 3:33onside kick rule changing within the NFL going into this year.
- 3:37And previously the change the kick off in general, which I'm
- 3:41actually a big fan of now, I really like the new kick off
- 3:43rule, but they changed the onside kick so he could only do
- 3:47it in the fourth quarter and when you were trailing.
- 3:50And I just think for me, it kind of ruins the element of surprise
- 3:53about it, ruined the element of surprise a little bit.
- 3:55Because sometimes a a good onside kick is, is fantastic,
- 3:59Like Pat Mcafee's onside kick they did years ago was, is, is,
- 4:02is generationally it's, it's absolutely fantastic.
- 4:05But going into this year now, they have tweaked that ruling
- 4:08where teams can now declare. So you still need to, you still
- 4:11need to declare the onside kick, but they can now declare the
- 4:14onside kick at any point in the game.
- 4:17So Brad, asking you here now, as you know, as just a general
- 4:20football fan taking your your coaching experience out of the
- 4:23out of the equation here, what's your view on the onside kick in
- 4:26general? I'm mixed with it because I
- 4:31think, I mean, let's be honest, how how often does it actually
- 4:34work? How often does it come off like
- 4:36it don't really does it? It's not it's not something
- 4:38that's like a big or or a regular game changing play.
- 4:44But I think the beauty of the onside kick is when it does
- 4:47happen and when teams catch people by surprise with it,
- 4:50which I think this is better that the new rules, better that
- 4:54you can now to do it at any point in the game, don't just
- 4:57have to be the 4th when you're trailing fine, great, really
- 5:00good move forwards, but you've still got to declare it.
- 5:03And I think that's the like the the naff bit about it.
- 5:06Really. It's like, oh, hey, everybody,
- 5:08guess what we're going to do on the next play.
- 5:10Like it's just, it's not really what American football's about.
- 5:14It's about outsmarting your opponents and being clever with
- 5:17your strategy and your approach. And I think that element of
- 5:21surprise is a big part of that, which obviously they got rid of,
- 5:24but I do think this is a step in the right direction.
- 5:27I just wonder if they'll actually go back to not having
- 5:32to declare it at all. Basically, you know, just been
- 5:37able to surprise them when you want to really.
- 5:41Yeah, I get, I get what you're saying there in terms of the
- 5:45element of surprise. And to be fair to you, I agree.
- 5:49I I think they should be able to just do it at any point
- 5:55basically and not have to declare it because that on that,
- 5:59that, that view of that, that that kind of element of surprise
- 6:05works great, if that makes sense.
- 6:10But it all comes down to preference.
- 6:12And obviously teams are voting in externally.
- 6:15So look, it's one of them. We'll have to kind of see how
- 6:19how it goes from there. And I think it works enough for
- 6:23it to still be entertaining because if it worked all the
- 6:25time, then it it worked all the time, it'd be less fun when it
- 6:32does pay off. I think coming for like the it'd
- 6:35be beneficial when it does, if you know what I mean.
- 6:40Yeah, no, for sure, for sure. The next rule we had changing, I
- 6:45don't know if you you'd seen much about this, was the kickoff
- 6:49penalty. So when the ball's kicked out of
- 6:50bounds, that penalty has now moved to be more significant.
- 6:56So it used to be the 40 and now it's the 50.
- 7:02So it's obviously a change there in 10 yards, which I think makes
- 7:06people have to think a bit more wisely about it now and actually
- 7:09be a bit more aware of what they're actually doing.
- 7:15You know, sometimes you could be quite tactical with it, couldn't
- 7:18you? I don't think you see it too
- 7:20often, but you could be quite tactical with this really.
- 7:22But now it's obviously a more significant penalty.
- 7:25So that's obviously changed by the 10 yards and then you've got
- 7:29some minor tweaks to the formation at kick off just to
- 7:33improve safety. Probably quite technical to get
- 7:39into the insurance and outs of this one for, you know, a lot of
- 7:42the sort of just day-to-day fans.
- 7:44But it's it's all about basically safety and and trying
- 7:47to improve sort of the returns of kickoffs.
- 7:51Really two more rules we've got as well, which I'm quite pleased
- 7:56about these. I don't know what your thoughts
- 7:57are on these, Zach. We've got an expanded
- 8:00officiating intervention. So it's a one year rule
- 8:04basically where the league is able to replay of what they're
- 8:11saying is clear and obvious errors.
- 8:13So that is it New York, I think the basis isn't it?
- 8:16They can step in and they can basically overrule any errors
- 8:22and that are clear and obvious that the referees have done.
- 8:27Now I think this is a big one because it's probably there's
- 8:30two parts to this for me is it's probably moving into the
- 8:33direction that the sport is probably going to go in
- 8:38eventually anyway. Yeah.
- 8:42But it's also an opportunity for the NFL to not allow the huge
- 8:49controversy, controversy, sorry, that they'll have when referees
- 8:52make those basically just wrong decisions now with they're
- 8:56human. So we get it.
- 8:58But I think it's a good opportunity to improve
- 9:03officiating generally. See, I agree with everything you
- 9:08say in there, right, that it definitely will improve the
- 9:11officiating and go, But at the same time that human error and
- 9:14it look, but when the human error is against your team is
- 9:17shit. And I'm not going to say it's
- 9:19not, but that human error is is kind of part of the game.
- 9:25That's like, if it keeps going this way, there is going to be
- 9:2910 years time. There'll be no officiating crew.
- 9:32It'll all be done by computers, lasers, you know, everything
- 9:38will be along the lines of that. I mean, they're already getting
- 9:40down, getting rid of the down markers and the down markers are
- 9:43now digital. Like everything's along the
- 9:45lines of that. I just feel like the key, I get
- 9:48it, you know, these clear and obvious things can go review it.
- 9:51So at what point do they go, well, we're reviewing clear and
- 9:55obvious things. AI is advancing at the moment.
- 9:58It is now. Can we just not like to do this
- 10:03anyway? They could invest the I mean,
- 10:05I've done it wrong. I think.
- 10:06Why is it are the NFL referee still part time?
- 10:09They can, but either way, they're still getting some sort
- 10:11of fee for it. They can invest that money a
- 10:13year into the kind of AI system a bit more and just do every
- 10:16single game digitally from 1:00 central hub by.
- 10:21I don't know me, I, I get it. And, and I, I, you know, when
- 10:26something happens to the Patriots that he's a clear and
- 10:28obvious foul and it doesn't get called, I'll be all singing all
- 10:31of his praises. But at the same time that human
- 10:34error in games, whether it's amateur, you know, professionals
- 10:38and professional, it happens. And, you know, I say it goes, I
- 10:44say it goes. I like, I like this.
- 10:46I like the refereeing crew being out there.
- 10:50Yeah. And obviously there's another
- 10:52one in terms of the officiating as well.
- 10:54So they can now as well. There's not really too much to
- 10:58discuss on this I don't think, but officials can now consult,
- 11:01consult off field to decide on objections and that includes non
- 11:06play incidents. So just a bit of opportunity
- 11:09there for them to consult with others around those sort of
- 11:12objections, which can be game changing.
- 11:14Currently really, I think the main one for me about the rule
- 11:18changes was one that actually, well, it wasn't that it was not
- 11:23approved. It was one that actually got
- 11:25withdrawn. So there was a proposal to allow
- 11:27trade in draft picks. I think it was five years into
- 11:31the future. So currently the rule is 3.
- 11:34But of course it's the Browns. The Browns were proposing that
- 11:38you can use five years in advance of trades.
- 11:41Now I wonder if there's a bit of a motive behind this.
- 11:45Had they got a big trade lined up or were they trying to get a
- 11:47trade over the line because they, you know, they did
- 11:50withdraw it or is it just actually they realised that
- 11:53other teams are probably not going to back it?
- 11:57What's your thoughts on that? Like five years.
- 11:59I'm, I'm surprised it's not gone ahead because there's teams like
- 12:06the, I want to use The Jets and the Browns an example.
- 12:08There's teams like them that are in an obvious rebuild that are
- 12:11going to, that could potentially I'm going to throw, just going
- 12:17to throw a random ass trade out there right now.
- 12:19Like let's say this, this, this gets accepted and prime Lamar
- 12:25Jackson, prime Papa Homes is there and the Browns come in and
- 12:30go, look, I'm going to give you your XYZ and I'm going to give
- 12:34it for the next 5 years, for instance.
- 12:37That then creates these blockbuster trades and these
- 12:40these shit or bust make or break trades where you could be
- 12:44throwing everything you do the entire kitchen sinking to kind
- 12:47of one player or a package or or something.
- 12:49But the flip side to it is, you know, look at the trade where we
- 12:54we Dallas, you know, getting all the draft picks in and they've
- 12:58recruited really well out of it. You could create a super team by
- 13:02giving a team X amount of draft picks from for the next 5 years.
- 13:07Because they can they can become so valuable.
- 13:10I can see positives from both sides of it.
- 13:12I just think it makes a bit of fun entertainment if you ask me.
- 13:15Like, I just think it's a little bit different.
- 13:18I feel like the teams that probably weren't supporting it
- 13:21were actually probably trying to protect like teams like the
- 13:24Browns and Jets, because I mean, look at the shambles of the
- 13:27whole Deshaun Watson thing. Like that alone was ridiculous.
- 13:31So imagine if The Jets or the Browns could mortgage five years
- 13:35worth of their future draft picks.
- 13:38I feel like they would potentially be ruining their
- 13:40franchises even worse than they do at the minute.
- 13:42Like I think there's an element of protection there for them,
- 13:45but it does happen in other sports.
- 13:47Like I'm not big into sort of like the NBA and MLB and stuff,
- 13:51but I'm pretty certain I know you can do it in the NBA like
- 13:56more years in advance. I don't, I don't know the exact
- 13:58figure, but I think it's quite significant when you compare it
- 14:00to the NFL. Actually, it could even be like
- 14:02if more than double. But I just feel like when you've
- 14:07got teams like The Jets and the Browns, it's dangerous to have
- 14:11that much to play with. It is, it is pretty.
- 14:15It could be a bit of fun at the same time, but like, you know,
- 14:18X, you know a lot, $1,000,000 on the line here and there's
- 14:21there's there's livelihoods and things like I like, I get it.
- 14:24But at the same time it just makes that better that better
- 14:26controversy going on to I mean as much a liar rule and coming
- 14:31off of the rulings down going on to more player orientated
- 14:33things. Kyle Pitts announced that he's
- 14:35actually agreed to the franchise tag and don't quote me on
- 14:38numbers there, but I believe it's around 15,000,000 a year
- 14:43for the next year. Sorry.
- 14:44There is still a chance though that they can kind of they can
- 14:52throw another contract at him to, you know, the bigger money
- 14:55got a feeling they want to see a little bit more of him because
- 14:58it hasn't been they stood that they thought they were going to
- 15:01be coming out of college. I don't think he's a little to
- 15:03his his reputation or anything like that.
- 15:05So I think I reckon see how he goes for the first few months of
- 15:07the season. Then they probably excite him to
- 15:09an extension from there. But the reports are like he's
- 15:12going to where he is reporting to the workouts, which is an
- 15:15obvious sign that he's going to be playing and good to go for
- 15:18the start of the season and not holding out for a contract.
- 15:21But yeah, so they can still, they can still kind of go
- 15:24through and and get this. I think he's a smart decision
- 15:27for him. He hasn't been that player
- 15:29personally. No.
- 15:32And there's there's talks about him being traded or, you know,
- 15:36if he ended up at free agency, a few teams interested in him.
- 15:38And he's always had that potential around him.
- 15:41Like when he came into the league, he was like a massive
- 15:42name. Wasn't he?
- 15:43Like this unreal athlete playing at tight end.
- 15:46But you're right, he's just not lived up to to his expectations.
- 15:49But you wonder how much of that is more about the team is that
- 15:52as opposed to him as a player? But yeah, I I think it's smart
- 15:58money for both sides. We'll we'll see.
- 16:01Obviously he could tie up a long term extension.
- 16:05There's been another big name in the news though, aren't there?
- 16:07So Dexter Lawrence Giants, he's been pushing and pushing for a
- 16:12new deal for around what, 2 years?
- 16:16But he's finally now tail between, well, not tail between
- 16:19his top legs, is it? But is is requested to trade,
- 16:22doesn't he? He wants out.
- 16:24Yeah, and I'm shocked more than anything else about this.
- 16:29And look, I get people play for for money and there is just the
- 16:35job and all that jazz, and I fully understand that.
- 16:37But hypothetically, the Giants in the best place they've been
- 16:44in the past, I want to say at least five years, at least five
- 16:51years. These you're maybe even 10 years
- 16:53like you're talking now. The Giants are in an area, my
- 16:56opinion anyway, where within the next two years they could be
- 17:00pushing Super Bowl because of the team and the the the
- 17:04signings. Not there's not necessarily a
- 17:06sign, but the team at the building around at this moment
- 17:08in time and the coach that they've just signed, he's he's
- 17:11really shit or busting for me. I just think he's earning a good
- 17:15crack. Anyway.
- 17:17I don't know if this is a bit of a rush to I, I, I don't know me
- 17:21personally. Like they've got a real young
- 17:24QB. They've got an exciting running
- 17:26back. Yeah.
- 17:27And done it wrong here himself last year, but he was exciting
- 17:29at the time. They've got exciting wide
- 17:31receivers that just signed a really exciting coach who's had
- 17:34experience with QBs like Jackson that in the past.
- 17:37It's not as if he's QB that's never so it's time to be a coach
- 17:41that never run with a a mobile QB before and and not not a
- 17:46success. I just think there's a lot of
- 17:48things there point in the right directions for the Giants and
- 17:49that really kills to say the patriots fan.
- 17:51I'm not going to lie, but like I just feel for that.
- 17:55I don't. I just feel for me, it's one of
- 17:57them like he's probably going to regret this.
- 18:01Do you think it's more? Chance of like players leave the
- 18:06Giants and then go and have a bit of success.
- 18:08And like he's he's had losing season after losing season, yet
- 18:13he's probably the best player on the team or definitely one of
- 18:16and he's like getting paid like, I don't know, 10-12 like among
- 18:21defensive tackles alone. Like, I don't know, it's
- 18:25probably annoying. You wouldn't like if you were in
- 18:26a job and someone was worse at their job than you, but they
- 18:29were getting paid more than you, that that would infuriate you,
- 18:33wouldn't it? Fully I fully get that.
- 18:36Maybe so more if it were maybe more so if it was on their team
- 18:39and not necessarily elsewhere. That's like, you know, I'm a
- 18:43truck driver is we we know this. That's like me comparing another
- 18:46company paying a truck driver more like I I get it, but like
- 18:53if it's with the giants, then maybe so I could understand that
- 18:56more And yes, it's all you're always going to be fighting for
- 18:58that that bigger wage. But at the same time, the Giants
- 19:01again haven't been in this situation.
- 19:03Think about the last time the Giants, you thought about the
- 19:05Giants being, you know what, these are exciting.
- 19:07They've got good, good, a good young core of an offence in
- 19:11particular. Like not just one player in
- 19:13particular. They're a bunch of players in
- 19:15the offence that got injured last year in particular, but are
- 19:20excited and they finished with a decent draft pick this year as
- 19:22well. So they could draft well this
- 19:24year to our trade, potentially going to a free agency and
- 19:27signing the hottest coach on the market for this pre season.
- 19:33Everything for me just kind of stands there with the with the
- 19:35giants is like actually could be a decent team going forward.
- 19:41And then this guy's walking and going.
- 19:42You pay me. I'll leave if I'm a giant.
- 19:45So I'm like slinging up bowl like, yeah, you're good, you're
- 19:48good, you're good. But like we're probably going to
- 19:51be attractive to signs from decent players in the offseason
- 19:55like free ages. I don't understand, like like
- 19:57he's passing now but I don't know me.
- 20:00I just think he's, I could be wrong.
- 20:02He's getting too big for his boots here.
- 20:05He's definitely one of those players, though.
- 20:06That's just he's holding out in there.
- 20:08He's he's not going to be at training camp.
- 20:10He's he's not doing any of that. So do you do you think
- 20:13realistically that the Giants miss him in in if he holds out
- 20:17for the season, do the Giants miss him or does he start turn
- 20:20around when the Giants get the playoffs?
- 20:21He's like, oh shit, I'll come back now.
- 20:23Hiya guys, I'm here. Nah.
- 20:27I don't know. I can't, I can't see Giants get
- 20:29into the playoffs, to be honest. I think they've got some good
- 20:31pieces. I think they're going to be
- 20:32exciting, but I think it's still going to be a little bit of a a
- 20:36project for them. But he's he's, he's good to let
- 20:39go. Yes, yes, look, I'm not I'm not
- 20:43saying he's not good at his job. I'm not saying he's he's
- 20:46arguably top five, top ten, but he's he's up there.
- 20:50He's very, very good. But flip side to this is like I
- 20:56just I, I feel like they're they're on a 2 year plan,
- 21:00potentially a A5 year plan with a 2 year goal is what I'd be
- 21:03looking at the giants for with this.
- 21:04If you've done well within two year, they've got the the team
- 21:06driven if where they can start trading around and looking to
- 21:09replacing things they're not banking all the money on like,
- 21:13you know, like, like they are in a Rogers situation.
- 21:16They've got good pieces elsewhere and this team's going
- 21:19to grow up together and if they're all mature together,
- 21:22then there could be a, there could be a real good team if you
- 21:29know, to stop getting concussion more than anything else, like,
- 21:33but that's, that'd be my view. I, I just, I just think it's a
- 21:36bit of a like if this is, if this is Miles Gallot and the
- 21:41Browns, then you're throwing everything at him because you've
- 21:43got nothing realistically. Like I think the giants have got
- 21:49some good pieces around him. That's why look at the oh, the
- 21:55Raiders situation, right and there was allowing him to go for
- 21:59the trade because realistically, you know, they have other things
- 22:03that can build around now, especially going with the first
- 22:05round pick and and pick one O 1. Yeah, as we were staying half a
- 22:08days champion Max Cosby would stay a lot.
- 22:10You know what I mean? But I don't know, it could have
- 22:13held out. And the Raiders are stubborn.
- 22:15Like, yeah, sound. Yeah, I guess time will tell.
- 22:18And you know, we get these every year, don't we?
- 22:20Someone else is holding out, someone else's requesting
- 22:23something. We get them every year.
- 22:24So let's see what happens to Sexy Dexy and then Stefan
- 22:28Gilmore. Then just to round up sort of
- 22:30the headline news, I guess, before we move on to a couple of
- 22:34big contracts as. Yeah, so Gilmore's officially
- 22:38retired. He's actually had a year out of
- 22:40the season already, I believe. But, you know, after a long
- 22:46career, you know, played for six teams as a Super Bowl champion,
- 22:50is 2 time All Pro, five times Pro Bowl.
- 22:55He is. Yeah, he's done.
- 22:56His cleats have officially been hung up.
- 23:00This this for me falls into who was we spoke about the other
- 23:05week, Hilton Ty Hilton and and retiring.
- 23:08I I'm not going to lie, I'm a dude.
- 23:10Gilmore's been great Gilmore great for the Patriots.
- 23:12He's a phenomenal player. I thought he'd already retired.
- 23:15That's poor knowledge from my side of things, but I think he's
- 23:17just kind of keeping development to there.
- 23:21He he he was fantastic and I've took me off to him.
- 23:23What a career he had. He he was never a dirty player,
- 23:26never a bad player. He just put his arms all into
- 23:28every jurors that he was. So credit to him and good
- 23:30looking retirement and you know, spending all this hard earned
- 23:33money basically. Indeed.
- 23:36And so I guess Speaking of that hard earned money probably loses
- 23:42nicely on to the biggest, I guess, news story of this past,
- 23:47what, 5-6 days, Mr Cousins? Who's his agent and how do I get
- 23:56him to negotiate me a new contract to drive a truck?
- 23:58That's what I want to know because this guy has just earn
- 24:02money guaranteed money as well. Like what's going going into
- 24:09this year, right? It's it's a five year contract,
- 24:13right, which is never going to see five years out of it.
- 24:15It's guaranteed 11.3 million now research card.
- 24:20If you could just find some information out from me in the
- 24:21back, and I know it's a ridiculous amount, the amount of
- 24:24money he's been paid or the amount of contract money he's
- 24:28had over the his career to the amount of guaranteed money he's
- 24:31had over his career is a ludicrous number for Kurt
- 24:35Cousins. Now, I'm not saying Kurt Cousins
- 24:37is the worst QB in the world, right, because there's been
- 24:40worse QBs out there. But what he's done to get this
- 24:44money is scandalous. Like he has.
- 24:48Oh wow, he's just a brass. It's just Madden it.
- 24:52I think I saw something the other day that he's now
- 24:55officially out earned Tom Brady, which obviously Brady will have
- 24:59a lot of like like sponsorship deals and stuff like that.
- 25:04Yeah. Yeah, that Cousins won't have
- 25:07bought to out earn the greatest quarterback ever.
- 25:11And your name's Kirk Cousins, and you haven't really got that
- 25:15much to show for yourself, have you?
- 25:16I mean, yeah, he's had a solid career, like a better career
- 25:19than I've had in the NFL, but. He's.
- 25:21Just it's not to think the money is getting there.
- 25:25Research Carl's put it into the chat there a total of $321.7
- 25:31million, that is. Is that is that what he's earned
- 25:35or is that what he's always that really guaranteed because like
- 25:37because I'm I don't want to. I know he's I said no, I think I
- 25:42saw that his contract to his contract could have been to what
- 25:48he's actually and he's so close to each other because he's
- 25:52crazy. His age is always going and
- 25:53gone. You won't guaranteed money like
- 25:57you know I'm guaranteed money and they've always paid it.
- 26:00I think that was like a thing, wasn't it until recently.
- 26:03And like it might just be this last year or two that he'd
- 26:05always had guaranteed contracts the whole time because he'd
- 26:10always just signed like short term deals, you know, which like
- 26:15this, if you look at this contract, this is a bizarre
- 26:17contract, isn't it? It's 5 five years, 172 mil.
- 26:21But when you actually sort of dig down into it, it's it's 20
- 26:25mil guaranteed because you've got Falcon still paying part of
- 26:29the salary you would have earned this year.
- 26:31But it's it's basically a one year contract at 20 mil is what
- 26:33it is. But there is the, the bit for
- 26:37the Raiders, which I think's the good business on both sides.
- 26:40I think it's a great contract for both sides is you've got
- 26:44Raiders who are going to sign Mendoza.
- 26:46You've got Kirk Cousins who is going to be a great mentor.
- 26:49Like if you've seen him in the the quarterback show on Netflix,
- 26:53like he's great there. And he was put in a tough
- 26:55situation in Falcon at the Falcons.
- 26:58But I think he's coming in and knowing exactly what situation
- 27:01he's going to be in. But the Raiders have got a two
- 27:03year option, I believe. So let's say Mendoza isn't
- 27:08ready. Mendoza is not what they want
- 27:09him to be. Because it happens quite
- 27:11regularly, doesn't it? College quarterbacks go into the
- 27:13NFL. They've still got a solid
- 27:15quarterbacking Cousins. Well, this is what we're going
- 27:18to get into and I'm going to get credit where credit is due.
- 27:20A green bear phenomenal of doing this.
- 27:22The fantastic. They did it with Rogers.
- 27:24They did it with Love. They draft a QB and they don't
- 27:26go right. You know you, I don't care how
- 27:28generational, how good you were, you're going on the bench and
- 27:31you'll learn of RQB now and we're going to put you in when
- 27:34you're ready and like, I don't know, just learnt of Brett
- 27:36Valve, right? And you're learning from the
- 27:39best, the best there. Jordan loves them.
- 27:40The same with Rogers. Like I'm not saying Jordan loves
- 27:43these Rogers, but he's definitely coming out of his
- 27:44shell more now. And look, Kurt Cousins here for
- 27:49me, 20 million, you're either going to start or you're going
- 27:52to be up bench for a year. Either way, get get yourself a
- 27:54Goodyear out of this. See how you're going from there.
- 27:57The Raiders need to really be smart about this, in my opinion.
- 28:02Now, look, these guys are getting paid a lot of money in
- 28:04that in that backroom, right? And the the, the the management
- 28:08know what they're doing, obviously.
- 28:10But for me, they need to just sit Mendoza for a year, a
- 28:16season, right, Be straight with Kirk, say look ball out this
- 28:20season, right? We could trade you, get you a
- 28:23starting job somewhere else, play for a starting job
- 28:24somewhere else. Basically, I want you to I want
- 28:26you to mentor Mendoza and we pass the torch at the end of the
- 28:30year and get get Mendoza some reps coming in, whether it be
- 28:33pre season, whether it be you know, if if the Falcons are
- 28:37doing you know they need they need a backup towards the end
- 28:40and there was an injury, Sir. But having sat there because for
- 28:42the light look alike Baker Mayfield coming in for the for
- 28:46the Browns. Yes, it weren't the right fit.
- 28:48But if this sat him for a year, for instance, behind her an
- 28:50experienced QB, they might have got a bit more Johnny Manziel
- 28:53might be the same. They might have got a bit more
- 28:55out of him rather than just chucking a bit deeper and going.
- 28:57You've played college ball, but you've never called a player in
- 28:59the huddle before. Get yourself on that field in
- 29:01front of all these thousands of people is a ridiculously long
- 29:04play card. I want you to execute it right
- 29:05for me. I just think it's just such a
- 29:11good position here to do something if they're smart.
- 29:15But the fans will just go. That's our one O 1 pick.
- 29:18Get him on that field. He needs to win the Super Bowl
- 29:21now. It just don't happen though,
- 29:24does it? Like that's just not the way.
- 29:26You don't win a Super Bowl that way.
- 29:28Like how? I mean, when can you ever
- 29:30remember that happening? Like it just doesn't and people
- 29:34push it too soon and they're impatient.
- 29:39I'd be interested to know the last time a rookie QB got too
- 29:44deep in the playoffs or what's the deepest a rookie QB has got
- 29:48in the playoffs before, Like, because we just said that there.
- 29:52What's the what's the with the last QB as a rookie QB ever got
- 29:58to the Super Bowl? You know, I'm just trying to
- 30:02think like research Carl coming in coming clutch a championship
- 30:05game. Who was it?
- 30:05Because I'm just trying to think now off the top of my head, like
- 30:08who was the the rookie QB that got there to the championship?
- 30:10I should probably know this, but in terms of rookie never been to
- 30:14a Super Bowl because like, like you say, it's such a if you look
- 30:18at Mendoza's tape from the from his pro day, like it didn't look
- 30:25anything spectacular. Let's just say.
- 30:30Well, that's, I mean, that's, that's the talk, isn't it?
- 30:32That like. Jayden Daniels, thank you very
- 30:35much. And property that's mad.
- 30:39So the talk about Mendoza is actually, you know, if this is a
- 30:43different quarterback draft is not going to necessarily be the
- 30:48top quarterback in the draft, maybe might still be up there.
- 30:52But I think it's the fact that there are no quarterbacks
- 30:55available really after him that are any good.
- 30:58You've got a couple of names that as they always do leading
- 31:01up to the draft, start to sort of rise a little bit.
- 31:04But it's that panic of if we want a quarterback, we've got to
- 31:08get him with that first pick. Whereas if it's a different year
- 31:12and you've got 5-6 quarterbacks all going in the first round,
- 31:15you've got options, then you could you could trade back and
- 31:17build a bit of draft capital. You've got more flexibility, but
- 31:20it's just not going to happen this year.
- 31:24But I don't know. I mean, the Raiders are not
- 31:26making the Super Bowl this year, whether they play.
- 31:28No. Mendoza or Kirk Cousins as the
- 31:31best career any quarterbacks ever had them, they're just as a
- 31:34team. They're not ready.
- 31:36But I think, I just think it's a smart move.
- 31:39What about shock Situation comes in on the draft day here and the
- 31:43Browns signed Cousins for this deal and decide to trade 101
- 31:49away for the better draft class. Maybe not Maybe not move into
- 31:54the first round. Maybe not move move further into
- 31:56the first round of this draft. That Raiders.
- 31:59Sorry. Yeah, like not moving to it's
- 32:03this draft. I think you know, we'll get rid
- 32:05of one O 1 moving to the 2027 draft class into the first
- 32:10round. Lumping it on maybe getting it
- 32:12because it could be a more QB and Ed team out there because
- 32:16realistically now the Raiders don't necessarily need a QB
- 32:20because they have Cousins to a fighter.
- 32:21If they want him, that could have him for at least a year,
- 32:23see him out there, go out there and then potentially look at a
- 32:26better QB, draft a QB, yeah, QB class in the next year or the
- 32:31year after and say we might get more value for his money X we
- 32:35might get a first and potentially 1/3 depending what
- 32:39team it is. I think there's just that risk
- 32:42factor because you don't know where that team that you trade
- 32:46in with is going to end up the year after.
- 32:48You don't know how that's going to pan out, but I think I think
- 32:51the beauty of this signing with Kirk Cousins as well is that
- 32:56when we're speaking about like fans putting pressure on to sign
- 32:59that to get like Mendoza on the field and things, I think that
- 33:02kind of plays into the Raiders hands a little bit as well.
- 33:05Because what you've seen over with Kirk Cousins over the last
- 33:083-4 years no longer really is. He has that period of games
- 33:13where he's falling. Yeah.
- 33:16And then he'll have three or four games on the bounce where
- 33:18he's thrown pick after pick and he's just bang average.
- 33:20And that's a perfect opportunity then for Raiders to go.
- 33:23Yeah, OK, now's the time. Let's get him on.
- 33:26Yeah. So it's, it's, I think it's
- 33:27clever in more ways than is maybe just seen on the surface.
- 33:32Now I get you there mate. And you know what?
- 33:34It's probably, you're probably right.
- 33:37You know, I like throwing wild scenarios out there with them,
- 33:41training at a first round pick. You never know what happens
- 33:43because if it comes in this guy called here, you know.
- 33:46Speaking of other contracts though, Trayvon Walker with the
- 33:48Jacksonville Jaguars has signed a four year extension, $110
- 33:52million to be exact, where 77 million of that is guaranteed
- 33:56and about 50 million paid at signing.
- 33:59I wouldn't mind getting paid 50 million when I sign a contract.
- 34:03I must admit, good sign, sign in, solid sign.
- 34:07It keeps in there up until 20-30.
- 34:10If they keep to see the contract out, I think that's a pretty
- 34:12decent sign of me. What about yourself?
- 34:16Yeah, I think, I think it's solid.
- 34:18Like I think it's an interesting contract because it's not one
- 34:21that basically says you're the best player in your position
- 34:26because he's not. But I think it's a contract that
- 34:29says, you know what, we respect what you've shown us and we
- 34:34value you as a player. So.
- 34:36So here's a good chunk of money that you're going to be happy
- 34:39with and, you know, keep doing it.
- 34:41And then we'll probably going to be pay the big, big bucks.
- 34:43But I think it's a really fair deal that is probably pitched
- 34:48about right for how he's played. I think he's a solid player.
- 34:52I'd take him. It's a good bit of business.
- 34:55Yeah, I can't, I can't really grumble too much.
- 34:57Don't have too much to say about it, if I'm honest with you, but
- 35:01I just think it's a solid bit of business.
- 35:03No, that's that, that's right. It's yeah, again, solid there
- 35:07the two major signings and contracts from the week that
- 35:11we've had there and to be fair, if your teams signs from that
- 35:15have missed off give it let us know guys, head over into the
- 35:18comments section of even YouTube, Spotify, wherever you
- 35:21listen to this Apple podcast or even over onto our socials at
- 35:25ABNF pod across all your socials and let us know what you're what
- 35:29you're thinking about your signings for your teams as well.
- 35:32Again, mentioned at the start of the pub.
- 35:33We're trying something a little bit new with the whole
- 35:35production side come and see our beautiful faces.
- 35:37YouTube and Spotify have a video version of each one each episode
- 35:42each week. And we might, might do a
- 35:47milestone face review, face. Yeah.
- 35:51Review reveal, face reveal, research A cow, right?
- 35:57But we'll have to work out there and see if he might, might work
- 36:00something out there. Right.
- 36:02Moving on. May the Falcons have updated
- 36:06their uniforms. First thoughts.
- 36:09What do you think? Well, let's take a look at them,
- 36:12shall we? I think they are.
- 36:15I think they're fine. Like, I think they're fine.
- 36:17It's interesting that the last part we did two weeks ago was
- 36:22our power rankings for the jerseys.
- 36:28Would the Falcons have ended up a bit higher than they did?
- 36:31Probably. I think I like them.
- 36:32I think they're clean. I think they're a classic look.
- 36:38You know that it's red, it's white, it's black.
- 36:40It's it's fine. But I do think it's an
- 36:43improvement for sure. And I like the font.
- 36:47I like, I'm not sure if the font's the same or not, I'll be
- 36:50honest with you, but I do like it.
- 36:53I think it's a clean look. And yeah, yeah, it's good.
- 36:56It's a good move. I I really don't like the old
- 36:59numbers on the on the old jersey.
- 37:03That kind of style they tried they tried to push towards it
- 37:06were Michael Petite. This looks cleaner, but research
- 37:09college probably a little comment into our little chat
- 37:11here saying barring home jersey just the Cardinals away jersey,
- 37:15the booked away jersey. Really really agree with you
- 37:18that my biggest issue is the the NFL teams nowadays are not I
- 37:25said no, that's that's that's disrespectful.
- 37:27This in particular here is just so late night, our late early
- 37:3390s, late 90s kind of vibe of that.
- 37:36Just we're going to get a colour go.
- 37:38It's a number and a logo on it, £110 please, $110.00 for this
- 37:43jersey, please. That's just a plain red jersey.
- 37:45When you've got college teams out there making these sick
- 37:47jerseys like Oregon's OR, I've always got dope jersey to go
- 37:51away. Oregon.
- 37:53Yeah, that you don't mind spending.
- 37:55I, I, I, I don't I'm not an Oregon fan, but I would spend
- 37:59$100 on on an Oregon jersey because it's so good.
- 38:02This you look at and it's just like, come on, guys, do
- 38:05something, get a get a design team in there because you could
- 38:09really cut that market. You could hit that market hard
- 38:12with a with a gorgeous design look at the charges bringing
- 38:15some nice designs out there. I just feel like NFL teams go
- 38:19SO1 dimensional sometimes and this it's a poor example of a re
- 38:24not rebrand, but like we bring a New Jersey out, it's red, get
- 38:28out of here, get out of here. It's, it's just a bit meh.
- 38:33It's fine. Like I think that is the best
- 38:35way of all the best words I can find to describe it is just,
- 38:39it's fine. So I mean, it's not offensive.
- 38:43That's probably part of it really, isn't it?
- 38:45Like they want to appeal to as many people as they can.
- 38:48So it's not offensive. It's nothing crazy, but it is
- 38:51definitely an improvement. Yeah, it's not the one, is it?
- 38:55It's not the one. Anyway.
- 38:57Let's get off that. It's not there.
- 38:58It's just he's just plain old, plain old.
- 39:00But that's the NFL kind of roundup that's going on at the
- 39:03moment within the world of football.
- 39:06We're going to move on to a very similar shaped ball now and
- 39:09we're going to move on to another passion of myself and
- 39:11Brad's, which is a new feature. It's I can't speak, get him off
- 39:16ref. Well, we're talking all things
- 39:19rugby league from this week now. It's going to be a bit of a sore
- 39:24subject to this, I'm not going to lie, because me and Brad were
- 39:30actually a spontaneous Saturday night decision.
- 39:34Fancy game tomorrow, Bank holiday Sunday, couple of pints,
- 39:38watch the game, get a bit of a live old action and good old
- 39:42review. And what a waste of money that
- 39:46one. Hey mate, I'll waste that money,
- 39:49that one. It was absolutely, well, not
- 39:51complete waste. I mean, we had a great day, to
- 39:53be fair, a heavy day, but the game was tragic.
- 39:59Like I'll be honest, I was I was thinking that first the first
- 40:03half. So just for anyone who's new to
- 40:06this, like we're talking Castleford Wakefield here, just
- 40:09for clarity on that one. But I thought, I thought the
- 40:12first half. I wouldn't say Castleford were
- 40:15like terribly worse than Wakefield, like Wakey were
- 40:18probably the better side. And I'm not.
- 40:21I'm never one to sort of blame refereeing decisions and things
- 40:24like I really, I try not to do that as much as possible.
- 40:28But I do think the referee in this game was woeful.
- 40:32I don't think it's going to check.
- 40:33It wouldn't have changed anything like but I thought no,
- 40:37I thought the first half was casts were a little bit worse
- 40:39than Wakey, but the referee in massively helped Trinity.
- 40:44But then the second-half was just absolutely, it was
- 40:47absolutely diabolical. It was.
- 40:48Terrible yeah. So this, this game hurt me in
- 40:54many ways, right? Not just my pride from sat there
- 40:58or stood there watching the game, but financially because it
- 41:02made me drink more for one. But then financially when I got
- 41:07home that night, I went to hang my coat up and ripped, ripped
- 41:13the coat hanger off the walls, had to buy a new one and put
- 41:16that on the yeah. So I was not in the good books.
- 41:21I I woke up the next morning to all the coats on the floor
- 41:23downstairs and a very angry wife anyway.
- 41:28So yeah, not just that, but but it made me do you know, right.
- 41:32Rugby league fans are passionate, but they do not talk
- 41:36some balls at times that you know, then where it were just
- 41:41one of them games where you know what I put up field.
- 41:44Somebody was in the wrong and the the fans made themselves
- 41:46aware of it. And you if you look at it from a
- 41:48bigger point of view and cast were diabolical.
- 41:50And but I fully agree with you. The first half, the refereeing
- 41:53was atrocious. But that second-half, if Waker
- 41:56decided to go home halfway through the second-half, Cass
- 41:58would have still found a way to to knock on, let the ball out of
- 42:02touch, kicking. How how we can have a field that
- 42:05we have that would play on as a home field week in week out
- 42:09right and still can't find space when we kick that ball.
- 42:13It is diabolical. There's there's people on that
- 42:15field that that needs to just realise that they need to get a
- 42:19job stocking shelves somewhere and not on a rugby field.
- 42:23And you know what that's that's that's disrespectful to people
- 42:25stocking shelves actually, because they're better than what
- 42:28I saw in that field at weekend It it was awful.
- 42:33I'll do it again. I'll go waste your money again.
- 42:36I know I will. It's just they're going to lose
- 42:41support. They're going to lose the
- 42:42support soon. They were, they were a sellout
- 42:44crowd. They're going to lose support
- 42:45soon. I mean, is it another month's
- 42:47time that researcher Cal's asking us to go see Wakey casts
- 42:51at Trinity? No Wakey Leeds, won't it?
- 42:55Wakey Leeds. That's right.
- 42:56Sorry. Yeah, that's it.
- 42:58I mean, yeah, don't tell me she'll disown me if we go to
- 43:02that game. Well, I mean, it was Rivals
- 43:06Week, wasn't it? So obviously we've touched on a
- 43:08warm rivalry there. I think there was one.
- 43:11Well, there's two games actually that I were really quite
- 43:13interested in seeing how they pan out.
- 43:16And the first one was Bradford, Leeds.
- 43:19I mean, how many years has it been we've been waiting for this
- 43:21game to? It was like it was the old
- 43:24rivalry. It was like it was the pinnacle
- 43:27of Super League, these games, wasn't it?
- 43:28Bradford and Leeds always top 2, you know, for a period of years,
- 43:32definitely like top three or four.
- 43:34And it was always a slog. And it was, it was quite
- 43:37exciting to see. I saw some like marketing and
- 43:40publicity around the game. We've been waiting how many
- 43:43years for this ball? It must be nearly 20 years or
- 43:46something, maybe a bit less than that.
- 43:48But it's. Yeah.
- 43:49Like there was that one and then a new rivalry really, Catalans
- 43:54and Toulouse. I was really intrigued how that
- 43:57one would pan out like Toulouse of not been terrible at all.
- 44:02They started really strong, dropped off a little bit, but
- 44:04they started really strong and I thought they had a chance to to
- 44:08beat Catalans to be fair, and the score was close to be fair,
- 44:11like 3326. It's a it's a drop goal game,
- 44:15isn't it? That's got the victory.
- 44:18Well, not the victories are trying to drop goal, but you
- 44:21know, they were depending on that drop goal because it was a
- 44:23close game. So I think, you know, I think
- 44:26All in all rivalries week was was quite a success really, I
- 44:31think. Yeah, and it you know what
- 44:34touching back on the market in there that that that leads
- 44:36Bradford game. I really enjoyed.
- 44:39I'm going to credit Sky Sports here.
- 44:40To be fair, they they went around the fans pregame and
- 44:45they're like putting like a phone camera in the face.
- 44:47It's like right who you know in the prime, who you have been
- 44:50Leon Price, Ryan all and it'll bring back all these like, you
- 44:54know, in the prime moments and it's like, oh, just bringing
- 44:57back keep seeing you got mentioned at one point.
- 45:00I'm like, well, what a geezer. He will like speak with me about
- 45:03my child and really well, really well, kind of produced and and
- 45:07and marketed there across. Now I want to touch on that to
- 45:12lose Catalan game in a second, but going back to the the first
- 45:16few times we did the I can't speak Pog their features on it.
- 45:20We were speaking really highly of the, the, the newly promoted
- 45:24teams and all the newly promoted teams are playing and performing
- 45:26against against existing teams, York in particular to lose.
- 45:30We're doing all right as well to be like you said, but York in
- 45:32particular now, are we seeing that that fall off that decline
- 45:37happen because, you know, yes, they're playing the same amount
- 45:40of games whether we'll be in the championship, if not a couple
- 45:42less depending on how the the playoffs go.
- 45:45But they're playing a tougher opponent week in, week out now.
- 45:48They're not playing. They're not playing the teams
- 45:51that they can kind of walk over and get some rest if they're
- 45:54needed to. Are we seeing this decline now,
- 45:56like to lose, have lost now the tools are looking what they look
- 46:00like at first couple of week, York losing to Huddersfield.
- 46:03Now I want to touch on that in a bit more detail in a second, but
- 46:07York losing their, Bradford losing to Leeds, like tough
- 46:11games, don't get me wrong, But are we seeing that that the the
- 46:15realisation of it in the Super League now and not in the
- 46:18Championship, is that coming into play, do you reckon?
- 46:21Yeah, maybe. I mean, I've just, I've just
- 46:24loaded up the the Super League table now just to have a gander.
- 46:27I've not, I've not looked since the weekend, to be fair.
- 46:29And you've got the Wolves at the top on 10 points that played six
- 46:33games. So they've actually got a game
- 46:35in hand there. And you've got then from 10th
- 46:40downwards. So to lose Giants, York Lee,
- 46:44Leopards and Tigers all on four points.
- 46:48So you know, it's it's early in the it's early in the season,
- 46:52isn't it? But you've had a few upset
- 46:54results to begin with. So your Rhinos have played seven
- 46:58games, so they could be on 14 points, They're on 10.
- 47:01So they're in second at the minute.
- 47:02Same with Warriors, Wakey, Saints.
- 47:06So they're all the top five are on 10 points, the bottom five
- 47:11are on 4 points. So it's still all to play for.
- 47:13But I think you're right in what you're saying that those new
- 47:16teams started really strong and they've dropped off haven't Then
- 47:22it's you'd think it maybe go the other way, like teams tend to
- 47:28find their form and actually, yeah, maybe it's actually that
- 47:33the teams they be are finding the form.
- 47:35I mean, the Huddersfield loss for York is probably that's
- 47:40that's going to hurt that one, because I'm saying Huddersfield
- 47:43are the team that should be propping up the league, like
- 47:45Tigers are currently propping up the league.
- 47:47But they are that team really a Huddersfield.
- 47:53So it's been, I don't know, it's, it's probably
- 47:55disappointing one that I can see the making playoffs.
- 48:03No, no. But the Huddersfield thing
- 48:07assumed that I was. I was touching with you there.
- 48:09Like since firing the coach. OK, so it's the same amount of
- 48:16players. The fire coach got a new
- 48:17coaching right And they played like a completely different
- 48:21team. They beat Wigan last week and
- 48:24they they absolutely, I don't think I remember texting you
- 48:27actually. Like have you seen this score?
- 48:29Like Huddersfield were up and they were playing well.
- 48:34And if I, if I'd have had a bet, if someone said to me give me a
- 48:38surefire bet for this weekend that I can put my house on, it'd
- 48:41have been we're going to be, we're going to put 100 past
- 48:43Huddersfield. And no, he came out and now
- 48:47they're not just being York, they're they're putting 20
- 48:52points past York positively right and dominating that game.
- 48:58He's just a new turn. But this goes back to what was
- 49:00what we spoke about with like the giant situation in the NFL.
- 49:04He's this new coach and you see our time with new coaches and
- 49:07new managers coming in football, rugby, American football.
- 49:10They'll do well for half a season.
- 49:11I'll do half a less that season, get a get a contract and then
- 49:14bash. But the touch on the teams like
- 49:17we were spoke away with York, Toulouse and Bradford.
- 49:21You say that teams normally find the farm going into the season,
- 49:24but you think these are kind of getting found out more now to
- 49:29lose. If you if you kind of contain
- 49:32their fall back, they've got nothing but not much more.
- 49:35The teams have been doing that. So then they're not going to be
- 49:38as expressive anymore. So it could not be something
- 49:41that they're looking at more than anything else.
- 49:44Yeah, it probably is. It probably is.
- 49:45And that happens, like you say, in every sport, doesn't it?
- 49:47Like you start to find those teams out.
- 49:50I know more than most from an NFL point of view where Miami
- 49:52Dolphins come up firing in the first half of the season when,
- 49:55you know, we had the Mike McDaniel, you know, start of his
- 49:59tenure, like Dolphins were electric and then they started
- 50:02figuring out how to rock the boat and, and we're seeing that.
- 50:06So yeah, I can't see them. I can't see them been playoff
- 50:10bound. The new teams, to be honest, I
- 50:13mean, Bradford are currently 8th.
- 50:15So they're at the top of the for the new 3 teams into the league.
- 50:20But we'll, I think we'll see how it goes.
- 50:22Staying out of that yeah, he's staying on that bottom 2 for him
- 50:25really proving that they're not a bottom two team.
- 50:27And if you can start that, I think it's a success.
- 50:30But yeah, that's that's that's the rugby league better rundown
- 50:35from from this week now. Good.
- 50:39Moving on to one of our favourite features now, our
- 50:43reoccurring feature of all other balls.
- 50:47Brad, if you would like to explain to the lovely listener
- 50:49at home what is all other balls? Absolutely.
- 50:54So all of the balls is where we touch on other areas in the
- 50:59world of sport. Obviously our rugby league
- 51:03feature started in all of the balls before making its way into
- 51:07a sort of ongoing feature throughout the NFL offseason.
- 51:10But we'll touch on other sports from around the world.
- 51:12Sometimes it's a nice funny story, sometimes it's a success
- 51:15story, or sometimes it's just genuinely what's going on in
- 51:19different areas. And that's kind of what we've
- 51:21got on today for you. So we don't often to say we're a
- 51:25British podcast. We don't often discuss football
- 51:28as in soccer, football, soccer, soccer ball.
- 51:33But we did this week. After the tragic Tigers loss we
- 51:39we went to drown our sorrows in a local ale.
- 51:43House we did, actually. And we, I mean, the game was on
- 51:49in the background one, we didn't actually see the end of this.
- 51:51So it's just been a highlights thing for me.
- 51:53But Leeds, so Leeds United, probably the most sort of
- 52:00supported local team for where Zach and I are based and
- 52:04research Cal, I know you're a big fan yourself.
- 52:08Leeds actually have made the semi finals of the FA Cup for
- 52:12the first time in 39 years which is absolutely nuts to think and
- 52:20I hope research Cal for your sake that that stat is correct.
- 52:24He's not in confidence, no one can see him but he's like yes
- 52:28yeah so Leeds beat West Ham on penalties.
- 52:31I think it was 2/2. Was it the main game?
- 52:34Obviously extra time and penalties got leads to the
- 52:37victory. So they're in the semi finals
- 52:40for the very first time. And then I think the other upset
- 52:43really from the weekend from the FA Cup sort of side of things is
- 52:49Arsenal, who are currently dominating the Premier League in
- 52:54terms that I think they're like, is it 9 points clear?
- 52:57I think of City, they were knocked out by Southampton,
- 53:02which was a real upset. So Southampton progress and
- 53:07Arsenal, who it's their league to lose when you're talking
- 53:11about the Premier League, are out of the FA Cup.
- 53:13So it will be an interesting being interesting round.
- 53:17When When are the next fixtures? Researcher Cal.
- 53:21I love an underdog story, though.
- 53:23Me, I love the underdog story. It's, it's, it's, it's great.
- 53:28April 25th, 26th sweet. Well, we'll definitely keep an
- 53:30eye on that. Touch on Leeds right quickly.
- 53:32I know we don't want to talk too much about, but touch on Leeds
- 53:34right quickly, like growing up in our area, football's massive
- 53:40to the to, to people and, and especially in school and stuff.
- 53:45The scenes start there. And again, research Carl if it's
- 53:49wrong. By the way, guys, please roast
- 53:51him and don't roast me and Brad. We just read what he puts on the
- 53:53we could put anything he wants to the script and we read his
- 53:55start. That's why we get him wrong
- 53:56sometimes. But for me, I remember that
- 53:59Leeds Man United Derby like like push it up and in the Premier
- 54:04League and they were great. To see that as like the first
- 54:07time I were alive, the last time that they got to the semi final,
- 54:11which it blows my mind because Leeds were a good team, but
- 54:15we're a great team but. It is weird.
- 54:21Like that's what that's why I want to like we'll talk.
- 54:23We always have a chat down before the show.
- 54:25And he'd mentioned about the 39 years thing.
- 54:27Oh yeah, yeah, that makes sense. Like the knocked down to the
- 54:31Championship and further like, and then as I was just sort of,
- 54:36you know, sort of reading through that, that statement
- 54:40again, the 39 years thing, I was just like, hang on, that just
- 54:43seems a bit bizarre. But I mean, he's just put in
- 54:48here. So 1987 we lost to Coventry, who
- 54:51won the Cup that year and we're a second, the second division
- 54:55club at the time. Nuts.
- 54:57Absolutely not. That's wild.
- 54:59That's wild. Well, good luck to him.
- 55:02A newer board. We'll definitely keep you posted
- 55:04on that. Now moving on to less than fun
- 55:07news and a bit more serious news.
- 55:09Now Mr Tiger Woods has been arrested once again for DUI in
- 55:15America. And so for you know, the Brits
- 55:19that don't know what DUI is, he's been caught basically drink
- 55:21driving or drug driving, depending on what they're what
- 55:25they're testing for there. But this is the second time
- 55:28after the 12 to 2017, which wouldn't his first one were not
- 55:34ideal. There were plenty of mug shots
- 55:37photos getting circulated around with him sat in the back of the
- 55:40the cop car getting drove back there.
- 55:43Look, he's checked himself into rehab, which all we can do is
- 55:48send teasing peace towards him and and hopefully actually works
- 55:52this time around for him and, and he kind of sorts himself out
- 55:54because the guy's going. He's had a lot of controversy in
- 55:59his life and I think his success outweighs the controversy.
- 56:03I'm not in any way, shape or form, by the way, condoing
- 56:06anything that he's ever done. But I think the reason why he
- 56:09keeps getting these second, third chances because of his
- 56:12success that he's had and what he's done for the sport of golf.
- 56:15I think like he just needs to really knock it.
- 56:19Think about his decisions. I think he needs a better group
- 56:22of friends around him as well because somebody has allowed him
- 56:26to do that. He's he, I mean, I've been alone
- 56:30and drove off as a realistically someone's kind of clocked on
- 56:32that he's going to do. He's going to drove.
- 56:34So just speak to be better people around him.
- 56:36But that being said, moving back onto the NFL as well as kind of
- 56:41ties in with this story as well. Buku Nakura has also checked
- 56:45himself into rehab in preparation for the season
- 56:48coming up. Just due to some rash, rash
- 56:52decisions that he's been making off the field and posting on his
- 56:55social media. Somebody take that guy's phone
- 56:57off him, please. The irony of this is on the last
- 57:02part we recorded and we were chatting about this before the
- 57:04show, is that you were like, oh, yeah, he's done amazing this and
- 57:08the other thing in all his praises.
- 57:09And then I think it was literally like, we'd signed off
- 57:12and over that night the story came out about these charges
- 57:15that someone had been pressing against him or lawsuit or
- 57:19whatever they call in America these different ways of doing
- 57:22it. But yeah, like, what is in it
- 57:24that he'd, like bit her or something?
- 57:26And like, he's messed up. The guy is a concern.
- 57:31He's a real concern. Yeah, just just cover him my
- 57:35back again. Do not condone anything that and
- 57:38even have done in any way shape or form.
- 57:40And real is the place for them to go anyway.
- 57:44Let's move on swiftly before I dig myself.
- 57:47And all disclaimer, disclaimer. Yeah, got to put that out there.
- 57:51Right. Let's go on to Carl's Conundrum,
- 57:53shall we? I need to remind myself of the
- 57:56Carl's conundrum from previous weeks.
- 58:00I've got it. We'll get up on the screen now.
- 58:03Believe. Yes.
- 58:05Perfect. So the Carl's conundrum from
- 58:07last the last pod, which is which NFL team holds the record
- 58:13for the longest regular season losing streak in NFL history And
- 58:17that goes down to the Chicago Cardinals, who are now the
- 58:22Arizona Cardinals. As I said, all these that that
- 58:26isn't all these that. So credit where crazy if you got
- 58:28that one without Googling anyway.
- 58:31Yeah, make sure with these that you are sort of chiming in on
- 58:35socials and putting your responses on there.
- 58:37It's quite nice. Like on Instagram, we'll, we'll
- 58:39always try and share it as a story and you get people
- 58:41replying to the story and it's like comment on the post.
- 58:45Please. You know, we're not get
- 58:47ourselves out there. So, you know, drop a comment for
- 58:49us, whether it's on YouTube, Instagram, Spotify, wherever you
- 58:53you get in the pod. Hell yes at ABNF pod on all your
- 58:58socials as well for that one guys right, let's move on to
- 59:01this week's Carlos could under that you can't get involved in
- 59:04and that is who is the only player to score a rushing
- 59:08touchdown, a receiving touchdown and a kick return touchdown in
- 59:12the same NFL playoff game. Why do I feel like I know this?
- 59:17Who is? I was thinking the exact same
- 59:19thing. Why is it who is the only player
- 59:24to score a rushing touchdown receiving this isn't?
- 59:26That old this one, is it Cal? No, I know this one.
- 59:32I know it. So who is the only player to
- 59:35score a rushing touchdown, receiving touchdown, a kick
- 59:36return touchdown in the same NFL playoff game?
- 59:40Why do I know this? Cal?
- 59:44Can I can we, can we ask? Like, you've got it.
- 59:48Yeah, you've got it. I've got it.
- 59:52I'm going to leave you to Stew on that one.
- 59:53I've got this one. This isn't that old.
- 59:55This is a this is a good one. I like it.
- 59:58I, I, I feel like I know this and it's going to Stew on my
- 1:00:03head all night now, just what I need if I'm going to bed, right?
- 1:00:09But yeah, if you know this one, guys, let us know.
- 1:00:11Get involved, please let us know and get involved so we can so we
- 1:00:14can go from there. Hey, if you get it right across
- 1:00:17the social, we'll give you a shout out as well next week.
- 1:00:19So yeah, head over there. Let us know while you're there
- 1:00:23as well, guys, while you're, while you're, whenever you're
- 1:00:24listening. If you could leave us a review,
- 1:00:25that'd be fantastic as well. It really helps us out in
- 1:00:28knowing around not just you know, what you're enjoying, what
- 1:00:31we can improve on as well. Like, but head over, give us a
- 1:00:33five star view if you can do if you're enjoying it and go from
- 1:00:36there. Bob, Brad, that is the pod done
- 1:00:40for the first time in our new little cell.
- 1:00:44You'll be you'll be glad about that one, won't you?
- 1:00:48Listen, listen, this I was this close to saying right, you've
- 1:00:52got this one solo. I'm done.
- 1:00:54Me dunzo, see you later. I'm off.
- 1:00:57My teddy was out of the window, big style.
- 1:01:00So from the cabin kitchen is is literally been defined tonight.
- 1:01:05The kitchen's held up and the cab absolutely has not.
- 1:01:08Bless him, he's had a blessing, but we'll, we'll get there.
- 1:01:13We will. We will get there indeed right.
- 1:01:16Let's hope this goes out. If it doesn't, you've been a
- 1:01:18right life anyway. Head over to all the social
