- 0:05Speaker 1: And I'm joined now by Senator Tim Caine of Virginia.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Good morning, Senator. I know you heard Secretary Duffy there
- 0:11Speaker 1: talking about the onus is on the Democrats and that
- 0:15Speaker 1: you are fighting to get illegal healthcare for immigrants.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Well, I just got to say, Martha, that's a lie.
- 0:24Speaker 3: The healthcare battle is not about healthcare for illegal immigrants,
- 0:27Speaker 3: and Sean Duffy knows it. It's about millions of Americans
- 0:31Speaker 3: who in the last few weeks have gotten premium increase
- 0:34Speaker 3: notices that tell them that Donald Trump's.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Big beautiful bill is delivering.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Them big, ugly health insurance bills within the next few
- 0:43Speaker 3: weeks unless we can find a fix. And so what
- 0:47Speaker 3: we're asking for is, let's find a path to a fix,
- 0:51Speaker 3: and let's also have President Trump finally engage in the
- 0:55Speaker 3: negotiation and guarantee that a deal is a deal. If
- 0:59Speaker 3: we shake care on a deal for thirty days or
- 1:01Speaker 3: for three months, he won't immediately start firing more people,
- 1:05Speaker 3: clawing back economic development projects, going after blue states or
- 1:09Speaker 3: blue cities, and allowing funds to be used in red cities. So, look,
- 1:13Speaker 3: we're looking for a path to fix people's health care
- 1:16Speaker 3: costs and we're looking for the President to agree that
- 1:19Speaker 3: a deal is a deal. Thus far he's refused to engage,
- 1:23Speaker 3: and we avoid shutdowns or get out of shutdowns all
- 1:26Speaker 3: the time when the President engages.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So, Senator, it has been thirty three days. Democrats chose
- 1:33Speaker 1: not to support that short term cr which would have
- 1:36Speaker 1: kept the government open. You could have negotiated. Now there's
- 1:40Speaker 1: some pretty devastating impacts on people looking at for snap
- 1:45Speaker 1: on air traffic controllers, on air travel. So what have
- 1:49Speaker 1: the Democrats gained from this?
- 1:53Speaker 2: Well, I don't look at this as politics.
- 1:55Speaker 3: I mean, the President told the House do a budget,
- 1:58Speaker 3: and his words.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Don't deal with Democrats.
- 2:01Speaker 3: So Senate Democrats put an alternative on the table twelve
- 2:04Speaker 3: days before September thirty that fixed the healthcare wreckage that
- 2:08Speaker 3: the Republicans caused, and that ensued that a deal would
- 2:12Speaker 3: be honored both by Congress and the White House. The
- 2:15Speaker 3: President refused to meet until the day before the deadline.
- 2:19Speaker 2: He had Democrats in.
- 2:20Speaker 3: The Oval office, and as soon as they walked out,
- 2:22Speaker 3: he put up an AI generated video of them wearing
- 2:26Speaker 3: sombreros and talking in AI generated fake voices, saying they
- 2:31Speaker 3: didn't say the guy's unserious, but we're serious to give
- 2:34Speaker 3: twenty billion dollars. Hold on, he's been willing to give
- 2:37Speaker 3: twenty billion dollars to the Argentines and meet with them,
- 2:40Speaker 3: wreck the White House, have a great Gatsby.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Party down at mar A Lago.
- 2:45Speaker 3: He has not done what he said needed to be
- 2:47Speaker 3: done in twenty eleven sit down with Democratic leadership.
- 2:50Speaker 1: If Senator I just want to go back to the.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Will be resolved in a matter of hours.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Okay, excuse me. I just want to go back to
- 2:57Speaker 1: what Democrats have gotten during this period, not talking about politics.
- 3:03Speaker 1: What have Democrats gained during this period? And how long
- 3:06Speaker 1: can this last?
- 3:09Speaker 3: You know, Martha, I'm a United States Senator, and yeah
- 3:12Speaker 3: I run as a Democrat and I'm a Democrat.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But I just don't approach my work that way.
- 3:15Speaker 3: So when you ask what Democrats have gained, what we're
- 3:19Speaker 3: focused on as the American people. We want President Trump
- 3:22Speaker 3: to stop firing people, canceling economic development projects. We wanted
- 3:27Speaker 3: to stop raising everybody's costs. You know, health care costs,
- 3:31Speaker 3: energy costs, housing costs. Halloween's more expensive, Thanksgiving is more expensive,
- 3:35Speaker 3: the holidays are going to be more expensive. So we're
- 3:38Speaker 3: asking the president to simply sit down and do what
- 3:41Speaker 3: all presidents do. We can find a budget deal that
- 3:45Speaker 3: puts us on a path to a healthcare fix. I
- 3:47Speaker 3: don't need all the i's dotted and t's crossed. I
- 3:50Speaker 3: just want to be on a path so that people's
- 3:53Speaker 3: bills don't spike. And I want the President to agree
- 3:56Speaker 3: stop the wrecking ball, stop the mass firings and the
- 3:59Speaker 3: cancelation of projects you don't like. And I think Americans
- 4:03Speaker 3: understand that, and that's why they look at Donald Trump's
- 4:05Speaker 3: lack of engagement and overwhelmingly say that he's really more
- 4:09Speaker 3: to blame for this.
- 4:10Speaker 1: We just have a couple of minutes here, but you
- 4:12Speaker 1: recently said things are coming together. They are reportedly conversations
- 4:16Speaker 1: among rank and file senators to try to negotiate the
- 4:20Speaker 1: reopening of the government for a few weeks. Is that
- 4:24Speaker 1: going on right now? Are you part of those discussions?
- 4:29Speaker 2: I would say, Martha, I'm sort of at the edge
- 4:31Speaker 2: of them.
- 4:31Speaker 3: There is a group of people talking about these two issues,
- 4:34Speaker 3: a path to fix the healthcare debacle and to guarantee
- 4:38Speaker 3: that if we reopen government.
- 4:39Speaker 2: I'm calling it a moratorium on mischief.
- 4:42Speaker 3: If we agree to reopen President Trump's got to stop
- 4:45Speaker 3: the firings the FAA.
- 4:47Speaker 2: We're talking air traffic control.
- 4:49Speaker 3: They've forced twenty four hundred people out of the FAA
- 4:53Speaker 3: during Trump's first year, when they were already short three
- 4:56Speaker 3: thousand air traffic controllers. Stop the firings, the games playing,
- 5:01Speaker 3: stop going after blue cities and helping red cities. Let's
- 5:04Speaker 3: have a moratorium on mischief during whatever this period is.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Get on a path to fix people's healthcare. If the
- 5:10Speaker 3: President engages, we will be we will find a deal,
- 5:13Speaker 3: I think within hours.
- 5:15Speaker 1: And Senator just quickly if you can. You're there in Virginia.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Virginia holds key elections on Tuesday. Are you confident that
- 5:22Speaker 1: Democrats can sweep this?
- 5:25Speaker 3: I feel really good about it, Martha. And here's why.
- 5:29Speaker 3: In Virginia. We are the best red to blue turnaround
- 5:32Speaker 3: in the country in the last twenty five years. And
- 5:34Speaker 3: the way we've done it is by focusing on the economy.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Abigail Spanberger our candidate three pillars to her campaign affordability, jobs,
- 5:43Speaker 3: and education, which is about kids, but also about our workforce.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Her opponent is running ads on offbeat cultural issues that
- 5:50Speaker 3: don't really matter to the most people in Virginia Democrats
- 5:54Speaker 3: focus on the economy, winning the economic argument, delivering economic results,
- 5:59Speaker 3: and that's why the state has moved from red to
- 6:01Speaker 3: blue so dramatically since two thousand.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Okay, thanks so much. Good to see you this morning, Senator,
- 6:06Speaker 1: appreciate your time.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Thanks Martha. Good to be with you.
