- 0:56of Healthy and Redeemed. I'm your host, Healy.
- 0:59I am happy, happy, happy that you're here today.
- 1:05Today we are going to talk about hope and depression.
- 1:11I've decided that I'm not going to do that deep of a dive on
- 1:15depression. I do want to cover it in this
- 1:18episode, but hopefully that we can talk more about hope and how
- 1:25to work through these depressed feelings or the symptoms of
- 1:31that. Have you ever had a time in your
- 1:34life that you felt like really, really down and felt like there
- 1:42was no hope or did not see the point of living?
- 1:47Maybe you were questioning life in general or like, what's the
- 1:50whole point of this? Sometimes that place is so dark,
- 1:55like it's hard to think outside of those questions.
- 1:59Often we can get very upset at people if they consider, you
- 2:05know, suicide or thinking those kind of thoughts.
- 2:11Yeah. I had someone tell me one time
- 2:13because, like, you can go through all the things of, like,
- 2:15OK, think about these things when you're feeling down.
- 2:18But really, your emotions are so big.
- 2:21Like, it is hard to think through like, oh, the family I
- 2:24leave behind or all these other things that are actually good in
- 2:28my life. Like it's hard to think above
- 2:31those emotions to get to that place.
- 2:35So I've really transformed my own thinking on that too.
- 2:39Now I know better, as far as I know, that it is an emotional
- 2:45thing going on. And so I've learned how to
- 2:50manage that better if I have depressed feelings coming on.
- 2:56I think the last time I felt really down, I wasn't really
- 3:01even aware that I was because I feel like I stayed pretty
- 3:04positive most of the time. But many years ago, well maybe
- 3:1110 or 15, I was having a lot of physical pain and I had been
- 3:19diagnosed with endometriosis in when I was in my 20s.
- 3:24But because I had a child, they kind of said, oh, well, you
- 3:31probably don't have it anymore, you know, because normally when
- 3:35you have endometriosis you either can't get pregnant or
- 3:40something. So anyway, but I was
- 3:43experiencing a lot of pain which I had most of my life, but it
- 3:47was getting so bad. Like instead of just a few days
- 3:52here and there or, you know, a week or something, like I was
- 3:55feeling pain a lot of the time and it was really affecting my
- 4:01mental Wellness as far as like I was just feeling discouraged.
- 4:06And that is one of the things that a lot of times you'll find
- 4:10if people are really struggling with their physical health that
- 4:14they are more prone to feel depressed because it is really
- 4:18hard to get your mind feeling well when your body hurts.
- 4:24We see this in the story of Job too.
- 4:27Like it almost seems like he is doing fairly well mentally.
- 4:33I mean, not, you know, like his circumstances were bad when he
- 4:37lost his children and, and everything that he had.
- 4:42But when he really started to experience a long term health
- 4:48issues like the pain and the sores and his skin and like it
- 4:54was just like repulsive to him and to others and he was in a
- 4:58lot of pain, that's when he really started showing signs of
- 5:02being depressed, of just having a lot of depressed feelings.
- 5:07I'm not sure how long his health issues actually went on, but it
- 5:14seems as if that he really had in some ways lost his will to
- 5:20live or at least questioning why God even let him be born as did
- 5:26a lot of the characters in the Bible.
- 5:31A lot of them struggled with depressed feelings for sure.
- 5:35So anyway, but that was probably one of the the times that I was
- 5:39like, Oh my goodness, something's really wrong.
- 5:41And I had actually gone to a counselor to kind of explore
- 5:45like, why am I feeling so down? I didn't even this is how
- 5:49disconnected I was. I wasn't even thinking that it
- 5:51was my physical symptoms, like I was looking at other things that
- 5:55were going on in my life. And then as I talked it through,
- 5:58I was like, that just really doesn't stress me out.
- 6:00And even though the counselor was kind of thinking it was
- 6:04could be this or this, these things, and I was just
- 6:08internally thinking, I don't really feel stressed about that.
- 6:11I mean, it was some stuff, but I can normally bring myself around
- 6:17pretty good. So I wasn't feeling too
- 6:20concerned about that. But anyway, it wasn't until I
- 6:24actually had to have surgery to they were going to go in and
- 6:29look and see what was the issues.
- 6:32And sure enough, it was endometriosis.
- 6:35Like I've been diagnosed 20 years earlier and with no
- 6:40treatment. Yay.
- 6:44I should have probably been more advocating for my own health
- 6:48during those times, but yeah, that's how I am.
- 6:53I'll go a long time in pain before I actually go to the
- 6:56doctor. Unfortunately, that's not a good
- 6:58trait. So don't, don't do as I do.
- 7:02Anyway, so once I had surgery and he removed that.
- 7:10And even though I I was going through a grieving period
- 7:13because it also took away my ability to have children, which
- 7:17I was fairly newly married and I really wanted, and another child
- 7:22or more, even though I was grieving that loss, I did feel
- 7:27better overall. I like I had no more pain.
- 7:30And it was so weird because suddenly I was like, wow, I
- 7:33didn't even realize how much I had been hurting the whole time.
- 7:37Like it was just like all these places in my life were suddenly
- 7:41pain free. And yeah, it was quite amazing.
- 7:45And so that was my most recent journey with having depressed
- 7:49feelings. I probably wouldn't say I could
- 7:53have been diagnosed with depression, but I certainly had
- 7:58been just struggling maintaining my what I feel like positive
- 8:03personality of feeling good. So.
- 8:09So anyway, I don't know why I tell you all that story, but to
- 8:13say that, yeah, sometimes we can have depressed feelings or we
- 8:17can have depression that's actually diagnosable.
- 8:21So I wanted to just share a little bit about what's the
- 8:25difference in depressed feelings and depression per SE.
- 8:29We all experience depressed feelings at times.
- 8:33Some of that will have to do with circumstances in our life.
- 8:37If we're having a stressful situation, maybe we're having
- 8:41health issues like I had, or maybe we're having relationship
- 8:44issues or something like that, we can feel down.
- 8:50If we've had a loss in our life, we can feel down.
- 8:54But to get actually diagnosed with depression, you will
- 9:00typically have to feel depressed for most of the day for at least
- 9:06two weeks. So that's one criteria is
- 9:11feeling depressed most of the day for at least two weeks.
- 9:16You may also experience loss of interest or pleasure and
- 9:20activities, especially ones that you found pleasurable before.
- 9:25You may have a significant weight loss or gain.
- 9:28You may have disturbances in your sleep, you may have fatigue
- 9:34or loss of energy. You'll see that one a lot.
- 9:36At least I see that one a lot in my office.
- 9:39Feelings of worthlessness or excessive guilt, difficulty
- 9:42concentrating, and reoccurrent thoughts of death or suicide.
- 9:47If you have at least five of those for two weeks and it's
- 9:52occurring like most of the day, then you would probably be
- 9:58diagnosed with depression. Now I am, I don't know if I've
- 10:03shared this in previous episodes, but I'm not a big
- 10:06person on diagnosis. I, I do diagnose people, but I'm
- 10:11always a little bit hesitant to even tell them the diagnosis
- 10:17because sometimes we as a people like to take on labels.
- 10:22And I don't know why we like to do this, but we do it in the
- 10:26positive sense and we also do it in the negative sense.
- 10:31I have anxiety, I have depression, I have this, I have
- 10:35that, or I am this or I am that that That's the main reason I
- 10:39don't really like sharing diagnosis of things because I
- 10:43don't want us just to be hiding behind a label.
- 10:46Because I think that if we experience symptoms of anything,
- 10:52then we can work on that issue that we don't have to take on
- 10:56that label. We can go, oh, this is where I'm
- 10:59at. But I also want to work to make
- 11:03that better. I understand I've been trained a
- 11:09lot in this diagnosis area, but I just want to say that if you
- 11:15do have a diagnosis, don't make that your identity.
- 11:18That is not who you are, and God gives us paths that can help
- 11:26alleviate some of these troubling symptoms, and I'm
- 11:30going to talk about some of those today.
- 11:34Let's look quickly at some people that I believed
- 11:39experienced depression or depressed feelings.
- 11:44So let we talked about job that he had a lot of loss in life.
- 11:49We talked about him and the grief episode that he
- 11:52experienced a lot of a lot of loss because of his physical
- 11:58symptoms of his illness and probably his friends that
- 12:04weren't very encouraging to him. I mean, did they tell him
- 12:10anything encouraging? The friends were just basically
- 12:13telling them you're a Sinner, you need to repent.
- 12:16And that is not, I mean, it may be true, but it's not the most
- 12:21encouraging thing to say, especially if Job says once
- 12:28that, well, I've looked at everything and I'm not aware of
- 12:31anything, then I would say the friends probably should have
- 12:34just prayed and said, God, if he has done something, reveal it to
- 12:38him instead of just going on and on and on about it.
- 12:42Like that was probably very discouraging to Job.
- 12:45Here is just one line. I'm not going to read all of
- 12:49these depressing thoughts of Job and like they can't be helpful
- 12:52at some level. But let me just like read one
- 12:54line from Job 30, verse 19, talking about Job's talking
- 13:01about God. He says he throws me into the
- 13:03mud and I'm reduced to dust and ashes.
- 13:07Oh, that's not funny. But it's it's very sad that Job
- 13:13is feeling so discouraged that he feels like God's just thrown
- 13:16him into the mud. But can you relate?
- 13:19Have you ever felt so down that you feel like I'm just like in
- 13:22the dirt here and I don't even want to get up?
- 13:25Yeah, that's how Job was feeling.
- 13:28And there were times that he wished that he had never been
- 13:31born. That's so discouraging.
- 13:34But Job comes around, and he says he's got encouraging words
- 13:42throughout his writings. They're just little Nuggets here
- 13:45and there, but one of his Nuggets is he says, I know that
- 13:49my Redeemer lives and that in the end he will stand on the
- 13:54earth. I mean, that's probably a
- 13:55prediction of Jesus right there too.
- 13:57But I think that's always one thing that we should remember
- 14:02when we're feeling down is go back and be reassured about who
- 14:07God is and what he says, especially about life.
- 14:14Another person that we see a lot that fell down, Jeremiah, he was
- 14:20called the weeping prophet because he felt such sorrow over
- 14:25Israel's sin. And OK, I don't know about you,
- 14:30but have you ever felt discouraged sometimes living in
- 14:33the US? We are a very blessed nation.
- 14:35We're a very blessed people. However, we have a lot of sin in
- 14:40our country and sometimes it is so grievous, like it can hurt us
- 14:47when we hear negative things and just it can be overwhelming
- 14:53sometimes when you know, people are talking about killing babies
- 14:59in the womb and that that's OK and just flaunting what God
- 15:04calls sin. It could be very discouraging to
- 15:07us. And we're like, is there any
- 15:09hope in this world for us? There is hope.
- 15:13And that's how Jeremiah felt. I mean, Israel had sinned so
- 15:17much and now they were going to be taken captive by Babylon.
- 15:22Like, how discouraging is that where another country comes in
- 15:28and actually takes the people captive.
- 15:32And that's that's the life that Jeremiah lived.
- 15:36So you can see why he was feeling down much of the time,
- 15:42he says in Jeremiah 2018. Why did I ever come out of the
- 15:46womb? To see trouble and sorrow and to
- 15:48end my days in shame. I mean, we can relate to that.
- 15:54Like, why am I even here? All I see is trouble.
- 15:59All I see is sorrow. And yeah, so I think it's
- 16:05frankly pretty comforting when people in the Bible at least
- 16:10wrote down things that we feel at times.
- 16:15Also, here is a scripture that Jeremiah also wrote.
- 16:21Sing to the Lord, Give praise to the Lord.
- 16:24He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.
- 16:29I think that, again, is just so encouraging when we see these
- 16:34people feeling down, like, don't even want to be here.
- 16:39And yet they can find hope in God, the creator of hope.
- 16:46Ezekiel is another prophet that really experienced a lot of pain
- 16:53and grief over the sins of the people during that same time
- 16:59frame. Naomi we talked about last time
- 17:04in all the losses that she experienced and how her life
- 17:12appeared to be redeemed at the end.
- 17:15You know, she said, call me Mara.
- 17:19She's telling her friends, call me Mara instead of Naomi because
- 17:26the Almighty has made my life very bitter.
- 17:29I went away full and the Lord has brought me back empty.
- 17:32Even in that, even though that's real negative because she's kind
- 17:37of blaming God for all the misfortune brought upon her, I
- 17:43think it still says something about she actually has belief
- 17:47that God's in control and that He has all authority over
- 17:52everything that happens. And we don't understand His ways
- 17:55and why He allows certain things or causes certain things, but we
- 18:00trust in Him and that He will redeem, if not now, at some time
- 18:07in the future when the timing is right.
- 18:10And of course, David, we love our David because we can relate
- 18:16so much to him, right? He felt very depressed at times.
- 18:21When Scripture says Psalm 6, my soul is in deep anguish.
- 18:26How long, Lord, how long? Wow, I think that encompasses a
- 18:30lot in Scripture of just like, you know, we can, we can relate
- 18:35to that Scripture, right, that sometimes we feel deep anguish
- 18:40about things in this world or things in our life or just our
- 18:45own emotions and we wonder how long, Lord, how long?
- 18:51Are you struggling with anxiety or worry?
- 18:53God has given you the power to change those emotions.
- 18:56In the workbook Changing Your Feelings, licensed counselor

- 19:23David is a great example of the landing well.
- 19:27He always seems to land well in his writings, so he also writes
- 19:34in a different place. Soulmate, Lord, our Lord, how
- 19:40majestic is your name in all the earth?
- 19:43He's got great, great scripture for encouragement if you need
- 19:49some. When we are having depressed
- 19:52feelings or we're feeling depressed, that is important
- 19:56that if we communicate that to others or even to ourselves,
- 20:00that we're not saying I am depressed.
- 20:04OK, we're saying I am feeling depressed or I have depressed
- 20:10feelings. And the reason I say that it
- 20:13seems small, but the I am depressed is taking on an
- 20:17identity that depressed is who you are and depressed is an
- 20:23emotion. And so I always just want to be
- 20:27clear in as we communicate our emotions to others or to
- 20:31ourselves that we remind ourselves it's an emotion and we
- 20:36can work on changing how we feel.
- 20:39So I am feeling depressed or I am having depressed feelings.
- 20:45OK, here are four things that we can focus on.
- 20:49We're going to use the acronym of HOPE HOPEH.
- 20:54We're going to focus on our health and that will be our
- 20:57physical health, our spiritual health and our brain health as
- 21:02well. So under physical health is our
- 21:04sleep, it's our physical activity, our body and the
- 21:10nutrition that goes into our body.
- 21:12So we want to be taking care of ourself.
- 21:16So if there's anything we can do in our body to make that
- 21:20healthy, that's going to help our mental mindset a lot.
- 21:24So always make sure that we're taking care of our body.
- 21:28The other thing that falls under health is our spiritual health.
- 21:32We need to always make sure that we are taking care of ourselves
- 21:36spiritually because that is the essence of who we are, right?
- 21:41So we need to be making sure that we're praying, that we're
- 21:45reading our Bible, that we're attending church.
- 21:50Now, it's OK to attend church once in a while online, but
- 21:54really we need to be in the fellowship of other believers.
- 21:58I know they're not perfect. We aren't perfect, but come to
- 22:03church with us and we'll be in perfect together, striving to be
- 22:08as holy as we can to reflect the image of God.
- 22:12We're not saying we're all right.
- 22:14And I know a lot of people don't attend church because of the
- 22:17people in the church, but we're just trying our best.
- 22:21And I'm sorry that you have been hurt by people there, but there
- 22:28are a lot of good, good, good people there too.
- 22:32And I, I hope that you will give church another chance if you've
- 22:36stepped away for a bit. So we want to pray, we want to
- 22:40read the Bible, and we want to attend church for brain health.
- 22:44You can find a lot of this information about brain health
- 22:48in my book, Changing Your Feelings.
- 22:51I've got a section on brain health and I may even have an
- 22:55earlier episode. I think it's called Anxiety in
- 22:58the Brain. I think I may have talked a
- 23:00little bit about good things to do for the brain.
- 23:04So either check out that episode or get my book.
- 23:07So the foods that we eat help the brain and how we take care
- 23:12of our body helps the brain. Thinking well helps the brain.
- 23:17So we want to make sure that we're thinking well because
- 23:20remember, we're focused on our good neurotransmitters, that
- 23:25those are positive ones going through our brain.
- 23:29And we also want to make sure that good chemicals are being
- 23:33released all the time. We've got serotonin and dopamine
- 23:37and oxytocin, so some important chemicals as we take care of our
- 23:45brain that in our body that those things will be released to
- 23:49help us. So number one of hope, HOPEH is
- 23:55health. We're going to focus on our
- 23:57health #2O is others. That means that we do things to
- 24:07engage with others. That can be like volunteering,
- 24:10where we're actually helping other people.
- 24:15This might look like engaging with other people in the sense
- 24:19that we're doing activities with other people.
- 24:22We're having some interactions with others.
- 24:27Volunteering should do that. But sometimes we may be
- 24:30volunteering at the library and maybe not engaging as much.
- 24:33So we wanna make sure that we're hanging out with our friends and
- 24:36doing things with others that bring joy to us.
- 24:40So social activities, we also want to be investing in others.
- 24:46So helping people, if we've got a good knowledge of the Bible,
- 24:49maybe we mentor or lead a Bible study or do something that helps
- 24:54share what we know about the Bible.
- 24:57It might mean volunteering in a church ministry so that you can
- 25:04help minister to others. We are designed for that kind of
- 25:10work of focusing on others, and so that's what we really want to
- 25:15do is help others in ways of volunteering, in the ways of
- 25:20social activities, or just reaching out to a friend and
- 25:24encouraging them. We're focusing on hope, health,
- 25:29others, and we're at P for promises.
- 25:32Focus on God's promises. God's promises are exactly what
- 25:38we need to do to bring truth, encouragement, and helpfulness
- 25:43into our lives. So we really want to focus on
- 25:46that. So whether that looks like
- 25:48meditation, that just looks like reading.
- 25:51Let me just share a few with you right now.
- 25:55Psalm 3418 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves
- 26:00the crush in spirit. Wow, just a little focus on that
- 26:06could really bring some encouragement and hope into our
- 26:13emotions. Isaiah 4110 says fear not for I
- 26:18am with you. Be not dismayed for I am your
- 26:22God. The reason I love this verse so
- 26:25much is because God says fear not for I am with you.
- 26:30And then he says, do not be dismayed for I am your God.
- 26:34He's not telling you anything to do.
- 26:38It's only focused on who he is and what he's doing.
- 26:43He says I am with you. So we're not to fear because God
- 26:47is with us. We don't even have to do
- 26:49anything except focus on that. Do not be dismayed for I am your
- 26:56God. Because of our relationship, we
- 26:58don't have to do anything except focus on that and that's going
- 27:03to help take away the fear and that's going to help us take
- 27:06away that feeling of dismay. To me that's so encouraging.
- 27:13Matthew 1128 says come to me, all who labor and are heavy
- 27:18laden and I will give you rest. We again don't have to do
- 27:23anything. It just says come to me and then
- 27:26that's all we have to do is be in His presence and He will give
- 27:31us rest. His promises are what we focus
- 27:35on because in those he gives us something we're not going to get
- 27:42anywhere else. So that's our third focus is on
- 27:47promises, on God's promises specifically.
- 27:50So we focus on hope, HOPE, health, others, promises, and E
- 27:58You've probably guessed it because I've said it a Jillian
- 28:01times already encouragement. We are going to focus on
- 28:05encouraging behaviors and encouraging thoughts.
- 28:11Encouraging behaviors looks like enjoyable physical activities.
- 28:17It looks like hobbies or other things that we enjoy in life.
- 28:22Or maybe we have a hard time enjoying because we're feeling
- 28:25down. But I would encourage you to do
- 28:28those things anyway. Sometimes we'll notice when
- 28:32we're feeling down and depressed, we don't really want
- 28:35to do anything. We're having a hard time getting
- 28:37out of bed. But if we can rise above what
- 28:41we're feeling and use our cognitive mind to say, I know I
- 28:45don't feel like getting out of bed, but I'm going to do it
- 28:48anyway, I promise you, you will feel at least a little bit
- 28:52better. It's not going to take away
- 28:53everything, but it will help you feel a little bit better.
- 28:57And it's the same with sometimes we don't want to do social
- 29:01activities, right. We don't want to go hang out
- 29:03with a friend. We kind of know though, we're
- 29:06going to feel better if we do that.
- 29:08But we don't really have the energy, you know, and we really
- 29:12don't want to have to get all dressed and all that.
- 29:15But I'll tell you that if you do the thing, you rise above the
- 29:19emotion, what the emotion is telling you to do.
- 29:22The emotion is saying, I stay home.
- 29:24You don't feel like doing that. I stay in bed.
- 29:26You don't feel like getting up. If you can rise above what the
- 29:29emotion says and listen to what the Holy Spirit is saying or
- 29:34your mind is saying, you get up and you go.
- 29:37You go hang out with that friend.
- 29:39You do that because you know you're going to feel better
- 29:43after you do that. So instead of listening to our
- 29:46emotions, we have to listen to our mind because that's where
- 29:50we're going to find encouragement at.
- 29:53Our emotions, in a sense, can't even just create encouragement
- 29:57for us. We create the encouragement from
- 30:00our behaviors and from our thoughts.
- 30:02Also, we always make sure that we are doing the things that we
- 30:06know to do. We know we need to do something
- 30:09specific. Do that thing.
- 30:11Don't let the emotion tell you not to do it.
- 30:14Do the thing, do the thing. It's the same with, you know,
- 30:18sometimes getting the motivation to read your Bible or to pray.
- 30:24Like sometimes it's hard to find the emote motivation, but I
- 30:30think it was Zig Ziglar that said action precedes motivation.
- 30:36And you know what that means? That we have to do it before we
- 30:40feel motivated. So don't let the emotion of
- 30:43motivation be your God. Do the thing, rise up above your
- 30:49emotion and do The thing is one of the most important things I
- 30:54learned in the Army was that specific thing.
- 30:59It's mind over matter. Basically, it doesn't matter how
- 31:03you feel, you keep on marching or you keep on low crawling or
- 31:09you keep on going. In whatever scenario you're in,
- 31:13your emotions can get you all sidetracked.
- 31:19Oh my goodness, I can't do this one more step, but yes, you can.
- 31:23You just did it. So take another and take
- 31:25another. And that's what we have to just
- 31:27rise above how we're feeling and do the thing we know to do.
- 31:32The other part of encouragement is having encouraging thoughts.
- 31:36We've talked a lot about this in previous episodes, but we have
- 31:40to have healthy, encouraging thoughts about ourselves and
- 31:45about others and about our situation.
- 31:49So how we have healthy thoughts about ourselves or that we
- 31:52replace our negative thoughts with good healthy thoughts.
- 31:56If there is something that you want to improve upon, say that
- 32:01maybe you don't display a character trait that you would
- 32:04really like to display more like maybe you aren't as patient as
- 32:08you would like to be, so pursue that.
- 32:11Don't just beat yourself up because you don't have the trait
- 32:14or you don't have it as much as you would like.
- 32:17I would challenge you that you probably do have some of it at
- 32:21least, but if you want more of it then just pursue it.
- 32:25Don't just beat yourself up because you don't have it.
- 32:27That's not fair and it's not encouraging.
- 32:30Take time to practice that skill whenever you get the
- 32:32opportunity. Small steps, small steps.
- 32:36It is also important that we think healthy and encouraging
- 32:40thoughts about others. We need to give other people
- 32:44grace. They are walking hard roads just
- 32:48like we are. And I know it's easy to call
- 32:52people names when they frustrate us or say, you know, disparaging
- 32:58things about them if, if we're upset or they're rude or
- 33:02something like that. But we need to do better as
- 33:04God's people and giving other people grace and just responding
- 33:09kindly to them. And I'll be the first to say I'm
- 33:13not perfect at this either. Like this is a hard one.
- 33:17But if we're thinking negatively about other people all the time,
- 33:21that is not going to rise us up out of our depressed emotions.
- 33:25That's going to keep us stuck. So we really have to work on
- 33:28seeing others in a more encouraging light.
- 33:34And the last one is being having encouraging thoughts about our
- 33:38circumstances. And what that looks like is that
- 33:42we develop the skill of gratitude, that we incorporate
- 33:47gratitude and thankfulness into our life, that we can look at
- 33:51hard, difficult, troubling, despairing situations through
- 33:56the light of eternity. To me, that is what helps us see
- 34:03gratitude and to see thankfulness and to remember
- 34:07that we have a God who is with us in the midst of it all, that
- 34:13we don't have to work hard to change everything around us.
- 34:17But he says, do not be dismayed, for I am your God, your God.
- 34:24I am your God and we don't have to be dismayed because we're
- 34:28looking at the situation in light of eternity.
- 34:33And so looking at that last, the E in hope is encouragement.
- 34:39And we're focusing on our behaviors, having encouraging
- 34:43behaviors in our life, having encouraging thoughts about
- 34:47ourselves, about others, and about our circumstances.
- 34:50So I want to end today's episode with some encouraging
- 34:55scriptures. These are some scriptures that
- 34:58frankly, I just like. It's not necessarily ones that
- 35:03are any more profound than any other ones.
- 35:06Hope is what we need to fight these emotions of depressed
- 35:11feelings or depression. OK, from Isaiah 32 one through
- 35:163, do not fear, for I have redeemed you.
- 35:20I have summoned you by name. You are mine.
- 35:25When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and
- 35:30when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over
- 35:34you. When you walk through the fire,
- 35:38you will not be burned. The flames will not set you
- 35:42ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the
- 35:47Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Tell me where in that Scripture
- 35:56that we have to fight, worry, be anxious, be down or anything?
- 36:03He understands those emotions. But really he is saying to us,
- 36:09you're going to pass through the waters.
- 36:12I will be with you. He's going to be with us.
- 36:16I mean, that makes me feel pretty confident.
- 36:18I don't know. And when you pass through the
- 36:20rivers, they're not going to sweep over you.
- 36:22So you don't have to swim like a frantic person.
- 36:25He just says they're not going to sweep over you.
- 36:28We focus on him and what he's capable of, not what we're
- 36:32capable of, what he is capable of.
- 36:36Romans 12/12. This is one of my favorites.
- 36:40I have it in my office. Be joyful in hope, patient in
- 36:46affliction, faithful in prayer. That's why I think like hope
- 36:52brings joy. Second Corinthians 4/8 through 9
- 36:56says we are hard pressed on every side but not crushed,
- 37:03perplexed but not in despair, persecuted but not abandoned,
- 37:10struck down but not destroyed. That's eternity thinking because
- 37:17we can feel like we are crushed, but it doesn't mean we are
- 37:22because God says we're not. It makes says perplexed.
- 37:26Not in despair. We may feel despair, but we're
- 37:31not in despair because we have hope.
- 37:36It says a persecuted, but not abandoned.
- 37:38We may feel abandoned, but it doesn't mean we are struck down
- 37:45but not destroyed. We may feel destroyed, but we're
- 37:50not destroyed. Remember, we're thinking through
- 37:53eternity's eyes. We are not destroyed.
- 37:56We are not abandoned. We are not in despair.
- 37:59We are not crushed because why? We don't rely on our feelings to
- 38:04determine truth for us. We let Scripture determine truth
- 38:08for us. Romans 826 and 28 says In the
- 38:12same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
- 38:17We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself
- 38:23intercedes for us through wordless groans, and he searches
- 38:28our hearts and knows the mind of the Spirit.
- 38:30Because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance
- 38:35with the will of God. This Scripture reminds us that
- 38:39we are going to be in times of weakness and that we are going
- 38:46to feel so out of it. And, and I, I don't know if you
- 38:52felt this, but I felt this like so down, so overwhelmed with all
- 38:56that's going on. I don't even know what to pray
- 38:58for. I can only say, Lord.
- 39:01And this Scripture reminds me that the Spirit's going to
- 39:07intercede for us because it intercedes for God's people in
- 39:14accordance with the will of God. That to me is so encouraging.
- 39:19So even though we go to God in prayer, if we ain't got it all
- 39:23right, that's OK. And if all we can say is, Lord,
- 39:26Lord, how long? What's going on?
- 39:29I don't even know what to pray for.
- 39:32The Spirit will help us in verse 28.
- 39:35And we know that in all things God works for the good of those
- 39:39who love him who have been called according to his purpose.
- 39:43That's you and that's me. That it doesn't matter what in
- 39:48this life, in our circumstances, that's going to try to break us.
- 39:53It won't, because God's going to work it for good.
- 39:58It doesn't mean that He will redeem every physical situation
- 40:03here on Earth, but He's working for the good of us.
- 40:09He's working out traits in us that can help us to be more
- 40:13holy. So sometimes we think good,
- 40:15like, oh, he's going to bring good from this.
- 40:18And that may be from Heaven's perspective, not from our
- 40:22perspective. So just remember that sometimes
- 40:25if we can't see the good, it might be a character trait.
- 40:29Most likely it's a character trait that God's bringing out
- 40:34good in that and not necessarily our circumstance.
- 40:37Let's end with Romans 1513. It says may the God of hope fill
- 40:42you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him so that you may
- 40:50overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 40:54I'm I just read it again. I don't even know what to say to
- 40:57this. Like it's so big and powerful.
- 41:02May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you
- 41:10trust in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power
- 41:17of the Holy Spirit. Well, it sounds like our focus
- 41:23is trusting in Him and that He's going to do the rest and bring
- 41:28about different emotions, or it's something even deeper than
- 41:34emotions. The peace and joy that God
- 41:37gives, that's like in our soul. Like it's deeper than the
- 41:42emotional part. That's so powerful to me.
- 41:45I'm going to encourage you this week to focus on hope, focus on
- 41:50your health, focus on others, focus on promises, and focus on
- 41:54encouragement. This can be so powerful in our
- 41:56lives if we let it. Whether you're feeling depressed
- 41:59or not, whether you're having depressed feelings or not, you
- 42:03might be feeling anxious like any negative emotion you're
- 42:06having. Let's focus on hope, health,
- 42:10others, promises, and encouragement.
- 42:14And if we can do that, we are going to be living healthy and
- 42:19redeemed. And that will help us reflect
- 42:22Jesus Christ rightly in all that we do.
- 42:26Friends, thank you so much for joining me.
- 42:28Lord willing, I'll see you next time.
