Latest / The Craig Way Show / SEC Preseason Polls Spark Debate, LeBron Chooses Philly, Media Days Wrap Up
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: All right away, we go on a Friday afternoon. It
- 0:24Speaker 1: is the day after the festivities of Tampa Bay SEC
- 0:30Speaker 1: Media Days have come and gone. Craig is on his
- 0:36Speaker 1: way back to Austin, and in the meantime, my name
- 0:40Speaker 1: is Jay Krman. I'll be filling in today from two
- 0:43Speaker 1: to five PM. We've got plenty more to bring you
- 0:47Speaker 1: from the SEC Media Days in Tampa. Of course, yesterday
- 0:52Speaker 1: you heard our AM thirteen hundred Zone crew including Cameron Parker,
- 0:56Speaker 1: Mike Carge and Craig Way bring you a live show
- 1:00Speaker 1: that ran from about four to six after the Round
- 1:02Speaker 1: Rock Express game, including some exclusive one on one interviews
- 1:07Speaker 1: with Steve Sarkisian, Trevor Goosebye, Colins Simmons, and Arch Manning.
- 1:12Speaker 1: That was just the tip of the iceberg, though, and
- 1:13Speaker 1: we're gonna bring you plenty more of what the Longhorn
- 1:17Speaker 1: players and coaches had to say in Tampa Bay and
- 1:21Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian with his thoughts on the roster overall, on
- 1:26Speaker 1: Arch Manning entering year two on the College Football Playoff
- 1:30Speaker 1: Committee and its approach to non conference games. We're gonna
- 1:34Speaker 1: get to all of that throughout the show today, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: we're gonna talk plenty of SEC football with a couple
- 1:41Speaker 1: of great guests, including Chris Hummer from CBS Sports, a
- 1:44Speaker 1: national college football writer, who will join us during the
- 1:47Speaker 1: three o'clock hour, and Evan Veeth from Inside Texas will
- 1:51Speaker 1: join us during the four o'clock hour.
- 1:53Speaker 2: We're gonna run you through.
- 1:55Speaker 1: The SEC Media Days preseason polls which have come out
- 2:01Speaker 1: earlier this afternoon, actually late this morning, tell you who's
- 2:05Speaker 1: on the All SEC first team, where the Longhorns stack up,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and we will get to all of that throughout the
- 2:11Speaker 1: show today, and in just a little bit, we'll let
- 2:14Speaker 1: you hear the rest of Arch Manning's time in Tampa
- 2:19Speaker 1: Bay through his electronic media room availability at the podium
- 2:23Speaker 1: taking questions, and we'll see if you get a sense
- 2:26Speaker 1: for what Arch and Craig talked about yesterday, and that
- 2:29Speaker 1: was the fact that Arch Manning's a little bit more
- 2:32Speaker 1: relaxed this year at Media Days, having a little bit
- 2:34Speaker 1: more fun with it today that he told Craig on
- 2:37Speaker 1: the show yesterday he was kind of dreading leading into
- 2:40Speaker 1: it and got some good advice from his dad, Cooper
- 2:42Speaker 1: in terms of letting things kind of roll off and
- 2:45Speaker 1: if there's any quarterback in the country.
- 2:47Speaker 2: He has had to do that more than others. It's
- 2:49Speaker 2: arch Manning.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So we're gonna get to arch Manning and some of
- 2:51Speaker 1: his questions and answers in just a few minutes. But
- 2:56Speaker 1: we got to start the show with Lebron James because
- 2:58Speaker 1: every time it feels like Craig is on a flight,
- 3:02Speaker 1: there's a big NBA story that breaks out. And today
- 3:06Speaker 1: it was mid morning when Lebron James announced his decision.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Not the decision that's the one where he took his
- 3:14Speaker 1: talents to South Beach, or the subsequent decisions to return
- 3:18Speaker 1: to Cleveland and then go out to La No, this
- 3:21Speaker 1: is what he's calling his last decision. Lebron James will
- 3:24Speaker 1: play for the Philadelphia seventy six ers on a two year,
- 3:28Speaker 1: eight million dollars deal. He said, quote, this is my
- 3:31Speaker 1: last decision. I'm not going for money, I'm not going
- 3:33Speaker 1: for family. I still want to compete, to win, to
- 3:36Speaker 1: have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And he believed after holding out and waiting and maybe
- 3:43Speaker 1: seeing where the cards would fall on a couple of
- 3:45Speaker 1: his former teammates, the likes of Anthony Davis, who the
- 3:50Speaker 1: Wizards decided not to trade for Jimmy Butler and Picks,
- 3:54Speaker 1: which I argued on the show was the right move
- 3:56Speaker 1: the likes of Kyrie Irving, who remains a Dallas Maverick
- 3:59Speaker 1: coming in to the twenty twenty sixth season. So Lebron
- 4:04Speaker 1: James thought that after all this dust settled the Sixers,
- 4:08Speaker 1: who added Jalen Brown earlier this season in a somewhat
- 4:11Speaker 1: surprising trade at least from the Boston Celtics perspective the
- 4:15Speaker 1: way we saw it.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Now gets to join the Sixers.
- 4:18Speaker 1: He'll be their power forward, joining a core of Jalen Brown,
- 4:23Speaker 1: Tyrese Maxi, vj Edgecombe and of course Joe l Embiid.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And one of the things Lebron mentioned in this was
- 4:32Speaker 1: his basketball happiness. He said that would unlock his best play,
- 4:36Speaker 1: and I think we saw some of his best play
- 4:39Speaker 1: at age forty one last year when he had the
- 4:42Speaker 1: ability to be an off ball option before the Luka
- 4:45Speaker 1: Doncic injury ultimately had a big head in derailing the
- 4:49Speaker 1: Lakers season. He's certainly going to have that luxury in Philly.
- 4:54Speaker 1: The Athletic was reporting on this. They noted the seventy
- 4:57Speaker 1: six ers weren't viewed as a primary threat Lebron James
- 5:01Speaker 1: by some of the other teams. In the process, there
- 5:03Speaker 1: was all that talk about the Warriors. Could he return
- 5:05Speaker 1: home and play with the Cabs, Could he join Jiannis
- 5:07Speaker 1: and bam Adebayo and go back to his Miami heat
- 5:11Speaker 1: former destination.
- 5:13Speaker 2: There were lots of suitors.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Not to sound like I'm watching the odyssey here, but
- 5:19Speaker 1: the seventy six Ers, according to The Athletic, were not
- 5:23Speaker 1: seen by some of the other teams as a main
- 5:26Speaker 1: threat to land Lebron James.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Oh but we saw it coming. Yeah.
- 5:30Speaker 1: When we had Mark Henry on the show right before
- 5:33Speaker 1: July fourth, our last show before America's two hunred and
- 5:36Speaker 1: fiftieth birthday, Mark and I went down the list and
- 5:41Speaker 1: tried to determine which teams Lebron James could join that
- 5:46Speaker 1: would make them true finals contenders, and the Sixers were
- 5:50Speaker 1: one of those. And Mark had some strong words about him,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and he's going to join the show close to the
- 5:58Speaker 1: bottom of the hour coming up later on read about
- 6:01Speaker 1: two thirty and we'll refresh you on what Mark.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Had to say.
- 6:06Speaker 1: We you know what, I got no problem pulling receipts.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I pull them when I'm wrong all the time. I
- 6:14Speaker 1: put out plenty of them, like that time I picked
- 6:17Speaker 1: the Detroit Tigers to win the American League pennant. This
- 6:19Speaker 1: season could still happen. I wouldn't say it's very likely.
- 6:23Speaker 1: It's not as likely as the Wizards winning the Eastern
- 6:25Speaker 1: Conference at this point. But when we get a receipt, right, hey,
- 6:31Speaker 1: we get to pull that one too. So we'll refresh
- 6:34Speaker 1: you on that conversation, some of the bold takes from
- 6:37Speaker 1: the world's strongest man, and he'll have a chance to
- 6:40Speaker 1: come on and we'll follow up on some of those
- 6:43Speaker 1: things later on this hour of the program. But that's
- 6:48Speaker 1: the big story of the afternoon. Anything but a Friday
- 6:53Speaker 1: news dump. Lebron James joining the Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Think about all the turnover in that division right now.
- 7:03Speaker 1: In the NBA, I know, divisions don't mean as much
- 7:07Speaker 1: as the conferences and the schedules are all bounced out
- 7:10Speaker 1: and things like that. But the Atlantic Division, you get
- 7:14Speaker 1: the defending champion New York Knicks. You got the Celtics
- 7:19Speaker 1: who are in a time of transition after moving on
- 7:23Speaker 1: from Jalen Brown, bringing in Paul George, bringing in Mitchell
- 7:26Speaker 1: Robinson and trying to reload after a disappointing postseason exit.
- 7:31Speaker 1: You've got the Toronto Raptors who are stuck in Kawhi
- 7:35Speaker 1: Leonard Limbo at the moment after making what they thought
- 7:40Speaker 1: was the big splash trade to build around Scottie Barnes
- 7:44Speaker 1: and push some chips in on competing after they ultimately
- 7:48Speaker 1: lost in seven games to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Round
- 7:50Speaker 1: one last season. You've got the Sixers, who are now
- 7:54Speaker 1: a team on the rise, adding Lebron James to an
- 7:59Speaker 1: already stacked ross we mentioned in the last segment, and
- 8:02Speaker 1: who I think got a steal in the NBA Draft
- 8:05Speaker 1: in La Baron, Phylon and then the Brooklyn netso we
- 8:08Speaker 1: don't have to talk about too much, but those four
- 8:10Speaker 1: teams in the Atlantic Division, teams that have completely hit
- 8:14Speaker 1: the factory reset button, who have retooled, who have taken
- 8:19Speaker 1: big swings in the NBA's off season, And it feels
- 8:23Speaker 1: very far away, but we're looking forward to seeing how
- 8:26Speaker 1: it all shakes out. One thing that's starting to feel
- 8:30Speaker 1: very very close by, not quite around the corner yet,
- 8:33Speaker 1: but maybe up around the bend the college football season
- 8:37Speaker 1: and coming up in the next segment, we'll let you
- 8:40Speaker 1: hear from SEC Media Days. Will have lots of sound
- 8:43Speaker 1: bites to bring you from SEC Media Days throughout the program.
- 8:45Speaker 1: These will be fresh from what you heard yesterday. If
- 8:48Speaker 1: you missed yesterday's program, it is available wherever you get
- 8:52Speaker 1: your podcasts. Craig Way, Mike Harges, Cameron Parker. Like I mentioned,
- 8:55Speaker 1: exclusive one on one interviews with Trevor Gooseby which you

- 9:01Speaker 1: hundred Zone, as well as arch Manning interviews posted on
- 9:04Speaker 1: our Instagram at AM thirteen hundred the Zone. The coverage
- 9:08Speaker 1: was fantastic from the guys down there. We can't wait
- 9:10Speaker 1: to welcome them back to town on Monday afternoon. But
- 9:13Speaker 1: for now, if you've got questions, whether that's about Lebron James,
- 9:17Speaker 1: about the Longhorns, about the SEC Media Days, all you
- 9:20Speaker 1: have to do is text us eight one five three
- 9:22Speaker 1: zero text the word Texas, followed by your questions and
- 9:24Speaker 1: your comments. We'll try to get to those as soon
- 9:27Speaker 1: as they come in eight one five three zero text
- 9:30Speaker 1: the word Texas. Standard message and data rates may apply,
- 9:33Speaker 1: of course, if you want to hear your voice on

- 9:41Speaker 1: to AM thirteen hundred Zone. That'll give you thirty seconds
- 9:45Speaker 1: up to thirty seconds. You don't have to use them all,
- 9:47Speaker 1: but you get thirty seconds to get your take fired off.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You could send some hot takes our way on this
- 9:54Speaker 1: hot Friday afternoon. We're gonna hear from March Manning coming
- 9:57Speaker 1: up next. We'll have much more on Lebron James later
- 10:00Speaker 1: this hour. Should be a fun afternoon coming up here
- 10:02Speaker 1: on AM thirteen hundred Zone.
- 10:04Speaker 2: We're so glad you're with us. US still said.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 10:19Speaker 1: On this Friday afternoon edition of the Craig Waves Show.
- 10:22Speaker 1: We're playing catch up on SEC media Day's content. We
- 10:26Speaker 1: know that everything this season for Texas offensively, if they
- 10:32Speaker 1: want to improve turn things around from what was last
- 10:35Speaker 1: season the worst offense in the last five years under
- 10:40Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian. If they want to turn that offense around,
- 10:43Speaker 1: get it back to the levels of those college football
- 10:46Speaker 1: playoff semi final teams of twenty twenty four and twenty
- 10:49Speaker 1: twenty three. It's going to starting in with Arch Manning
- 10:52Speaker 1: in year number two and in this press conference, you'll
- 10:56Speaker 1: hear arch Manning discuss his thoughts, expectations and russians of
- 11:00Speaker 1: new teammates. You'll hear him get asked in specific about
- 11:04Speaker 1: some of the opponents on the Longhorn schedule, and you'll
- 11:08Speaker 1: hear him talk about where the offense is right now
- 11:12Speaker 1: compared to me be where it was at the start
- 11:15Speaker 1: of last season where the Longhorns were slow coming out
- 11:18Speaker 1: of the gates. Here is arch Manning in the media
- 11:20Speaker 1: room at SEC Media Days yesterday afternoon.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Jeredforthirdeo dot com. Arch mean a third generation SEC quarterback.
- 11:28Speaker 4: What does playing in this conference meeting you personally? Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 4: it's it's very special to me.
- 11:33Speaker 5: I grew up going to SEC games or it's lco
- 11:35Speaker 5: miss and so now playing it as a dream come true.
- 11:40Speaker 6: Passes to your left, turning in with Way thirty one,
- 11:42Speaker 6: Just what stood out about throwing a cam Coleman so far?
- 11:45Speaker 4: What makes him special?
- 11:46Speaker 5: Yeah, obviously he's a really good athlete, a freak athlete,
- 11:49Speaker 5: but he's also a really good person and a very
- 11:51Speaker 5: hard worker.
- 11:52Speaker 4: So we're excited to have him second. Rowing Passes to
- 11:55Speaker 4: your right.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Hey Arts, Rob Gregson eight Z Sports, What did you
- 11:59Speaker 5: take from that Ohio State game the first go round
- 12:01Speaker 5: that you can bring into your second matchup with them?
- 12:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I learned a lot.
- 12:06Speaker 5: Obviously, gaining those game experiences was really good for me.
- 12:10Speaker 5: Obviously that was a rough game, So learning from it
- 12:13Speaker 5: and moving on and motivating it for me for this
- 12:15Speaker 5: year front.
- 12:16Speaker 3: Rowing pass it right behind you, Hey, Archie Xavier McKnight
- 12:19Speaker 3: with WWSB out of Saracena. So last season you were
- 12:22Speaker 3: coming in as a first year starter for the full
- 12:24Speaker 3: time and there were expectations coming in, lofty expectations.
- 12:28Speaker 4: There are big expectations on you this year as well.
- 12:30Speaker 3: How are you handling that this season after the aftermath
- 12:34Speaker 3: of last season? Are you letting the impact you or
- 12:37Speaker 3: are you just hoping on going out and playing your
- 12:39Speaker 3: game and running your race.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Yeah. My goal of this offseason was just a state present,
- 12:43Speaker 5: take it one day at a time. I'm not really
- 12:45Speaker 5: worried about the outside world, and that's what I continue
- 12:48Speaker 5: to try to do.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Peter rodichistramil dot com.
- 12:50Speaker 7: I guess, adding to what you said about Cam, how
- 12:52Speaker 7: have you kind of built for leadership with him this
- 12:54Speaker 7: offensive and this offseason?
- 12:56Speaker 4: How would you describe him as a teammate. Yeah, he's
- 12:58Speaker 4: a great teammate. He works really hard.
- 13:00Speaker 5: The good thing about Cam and how we built our
- 13:02Speaker 5: relationship is he he always wants to throw, he always
- 13:05Speaker 5: wants to meet extra and I think anytime you got
- 13:07Speaker 5: a guy like that, it's easier for me to become
- 13:09Speaker 5: close with.
- 13:10Speaker 4: And he's also a good guy. He can joke and
- 13:12Speaker 4: we can go eat and I'm excited to have him
- 13:15Speaker 4: on my team, that's for sure.
- 13:17Speaker 8: So can roll in the oisle Hey Arch Cameron le
- 13:19Speaker 8: June wak Montgomery, Alabama. This will be your second season
- 13:22Speaker 8: as the starter at Texas. Can you just talk a
- 13:25Speaker 8: little bit about your relationship with Steve Sarkisian.
- 13:28Speaker 2: And kind of how that's grown in the last two years.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Yeah, we have a great relationship.
- 13:32Speaker 5: I think he has a good relationship with our whole
- 13:34Speaker 5: team and we all trust him and we're excited to
- 13:37Speaker 5: play for him. He gets us to play hard for him,
- 13:39Speaker 5: and uh, I'm excited for a year two with him through.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Growing the right Hey Arch Jig Worthing carry I sports coach.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Sark has talked about his quarterbacks playing on time. What
- 13:50Speaker 4: exactly does that look like when you're under center?
- 13:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I think going through your reids and getting the
- 13:55Speaker 5: ball to the right people. And I think I didn't
- 13:57Speaker 5: do that sometimes last year, but trying to get better
- 14:00Speaker 5: with that this year.
- 14:01Speaker 7: Hey arch, soing on, well, well good see again apstead
- 14:05Speaker 7: of a VP, as we see ours, Louisiana native can
- 14:08Speaker 7: be playing.
- 14:08Speaker 4: In Baton Rouge in November. Uh you must think about
- 14:12Speaker 4: that once in a while. Yeah, yeah, of course.
- 14:15Speaker 5: I definitely heard about that when I went back to
- 14:17Speaker 5: Manny Past Academy in Louisiana.
- 14:19Speaker 4: But we're excited.
- 14:20Speaker 5: I grew up going to Baton Rouge for football games,
- 14:23Speaker 5: and we're excited to go.
- 14:24Speaker 4: It's gonna be a good game.
- 14:25Speaker 5: They're a great program with a bunch of good players,
- 14:28Speaker 5: so we're excited. Tyler Shaw with Kimmy Ticks and Brian
- 14:31Speaker 5: College Station, with your time at Texas so far, what
- 14:34Speaker 5: have you learned about the rivalry and the lone Star showdown?
- 14:37Speaker 5: And you know two years ago was your first taste
- 14:39Speaker 5: in College Station. What do you remember about that? Yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 5: A and M. They got a bunch of good players,
- 14:44Speaker 5: a great coach. That atmosphere is the real deal. So
- 14:48Speaker 5: we're excited, always excited for that rivalry game, and we're
- 14:52Speaker 5: pumped up.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Hey, Archievans Ferrar nine nine point one of the Sports
- 14:56Speaker 6: Ana one. Not so you guys played Tennessee and SEC
- 14:58Speaker 6: play early on, Peyton said he was rooting for you
- 15:02Speaker 6: and not his alam about it in Tennessee would have
- 15:04Speaker 6: been your experiences in neland and maybe talking about his
- 15:07Speaker 6: time at Tennessee.
- 15:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I've never been, so I'm excited to go for
- 15:10Speaker 5: the first time. We're all pumped up first SEC game.
- 15:14Speaker 5: That's a great program. I spent some time with George
- 15:15Speaker 5: McIntyre this offseason. He's a really good dude. So we're
- 15:18Speaker 5: all excited. On the Island of the Back CJ Vogel
- 15:22Speaker 5: with on Texas Football, arch lot's been made about the
- 15:24Speaker 5: additions at running back as well as your wide receivers.
- 15:27Speaker 4: How's kind of that tight end group coming along, where's
- 15:29Speaker 4: room for improvement and what are some of the strengths
- 15:32Speaker 4: right there?
- 15:32Speaker 5: Yeah, we got a lot of depth in the tight
- 15:34Speaker 5: end room, a whole bunch of good guys, and we're excited.
- 15:37Speaker 4: I think it's.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Gonna come down to camp to see who kind of
- 15:40Speaker 5: takes that role. But it's been a good offseason for
- 15:42Speaker 5: those guys.
- 15:43Speaker 9: Hey, Archivian Camenco, Oklahoma's own News nine. Parker Livingston transferring
- 15:47Speaker 9: sides from Texas to OU. What's going to be like
- 15:50Speaker 9: debasing this year? Yeah, it's gonna be different. I mean,
- 15:52Speaker 9: here's my roommates now playing against him. It's definitely a
- 15:55Speaker 9: little bit of a change. I think that's just kind
- 15:57Speaker 9: of how college football is now. Thanks David Epstein. Sports
- 16:00Speaker 9: started at WJATV in Jackson, Mississippi. Yesterday was covering Ole
- 16:04Speaker 9: Miss and of course you got family connections there.
- 16:05Speaker 4: They were talking a lot about legacy this year and
- 16:08Speaker 4: what that means.
- 16:08Speaker 5: And I'm just wondering, in your experience with your family
- 16:11Speaker 5: and connections to Ole Miss and everything, what you've learned
- 16:13Speaker 5: in your life, does legacy mean to you?
- 16:16Speaker 4: And just from what you've witnessed.
- 16:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I grew up going Ole Miss games, obviously, ELI
- 16:21Speaker 5: and my grandfather built legacies at Old Miss, and we're
- 16:25Speaker 5: just trying to take it day by day and win
- 16:26Speaker 5: some games this year.
- 16:27Speaker 4: I'm not really worried about my legacy role.
- 16:30Speaker 6: Arch and Evan Beth inside Texas last year, the arch
- 16:35Speaker 6: man that watched a new house State now the one
- 16:36Speaker 6: that we're talking to here at SEC Media Days what's
- 16:38Speaker 6: the biggest difference mentally and physically between those two people.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I've become more present about obviously matured.
- 16:46Speaker 4: I think going through those rough times learn a lot.
- 16:48Speaker 5: About myself and I've become a better man because of it,
- 16:50Speaker 5: and hopefully a better player.
- 16:51Speaker 10: I don't want to repeat that game. Hey, rich Court
- 16:54Speaker 10: Samuels againside of Texas. I just talk to a little
- 16:57Speaker 10: bit about freshman Jumaian Bishop. What have you seen from him?
- 17:00Speaker 10: You know, start talked that he is going to play
- 17:02Speaker 10: with Streeper this year, going to be on the offensive
- 17:04Speaker 10: side of the ball, spend a little bit of time
- 17:05Speaker 10: in d D meetings.
- 17:06Speaker 11: Of course we all know this.
- 17:08Speaker 10: What did you see for him that he can help,
- 17:10Speaker 10: you know, this football team in twenty twenty six, not
- 17:12Speaker 10: just down the line and he progresses.
- 17:14Speaker 5: Yeah, Jermaine's a great athlete, great player. His high school
- 17:18Speaker 5: highlight tape is unreal. But he's also really smart and
- 17:21Speaker 5: very competitive. So we're glad to have him on our team, real.
- 17:25Speaker 7: Our chiem boyd inside Texas. How would you on a
- 17:28Speaker 7: scale of one to ten, how would you rate where
- 17:31Speaker 7: the offense was going into fall camp at twenty twenty five?
- 17:35Speaker 7: And where the offense is going into fall camp of
- 17:37Speaker 7: twenty twenty six.
- 17:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's it's a totally different group.
- 17:40Speaker 5: We're definitely all probably a year better.
- 17:43Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 17:44Speaker 5: It's not really for me to rate. I think that's
- 17:45Speaker 5: the all his job. So I'll let y'all decide that
- 17:48Speaker 5: once we start playing. At what point in last season
- 17:50Speaker 5: did it become fun for you? I think when we
- 17:53Speaker 5: started winning.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Pretty candid but pretty fair our jazz. When did last
- 17:57Speaker 1: season become fun when we started winning? Yeah, I think
- 18:01Speaker 1: a lot of the Longhorn fan base would agree. They
- 18:03Speaker 1: could also see that sort of change happen in Arch
- 18:06Speaker 1: as the season went along.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Okay, up next, Mark Henry.
- 18:12Speaker 1: He called this He called Lebron James moved to Philadelphia
- 18:16Speaker 1: three weeks ago and will follow up for some of
- 18:19Speaker 1: his thoughts next here on AM thirteen hundred Zone and
- 18:22Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. Okay, welcome back on a Friday afternoon
- 18:27Speaker 1: edition of The Craigway Show.
- 18:29Speaker 2: We're talking some NBA news.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Lebron James makes his so called last decision to join
- 18:37Speaker 1: the Philadelphia seventy six ers for this twenty twenty six season.
- 18:41Speaker 1: We led the show by talking about the way the
- 18:44Speaker 1: Sixers were seen by many as a dark horse in
- 18:47Speaker 1: the Lebron James sweepstakes. Of course, the Jalen Brown trade,
- 18:51Speaker 1: which happened right before July fourth, shook things up. On
- 18:54Speaker 1: the day of that trade, the World's Strongest Man WWE
- 19:00Speaker 1: famer Mark Henry joined the show and we broke down
- 19:04Speaker 1: which NBA teams would become Finals contenders if Lebron James
- 19:09Speaker 1: decided to sign there. Obviously, we were under the assumption
- 19:13Speaker 1: that James would be taking a pretty big pay cut,
- 19:15Speaker 1: and in this case he sure did. Two years, eight
- 19:18Speaker 1: million dollars, a player option included in the deal as well,
- 19:23Speaker 1: and he joins a seventy six ers team that is
- 19:25Speaker 1: already stacked. And when Mark and I were discussing the
- 19:29Speaker 1: Jalen Brown trade, which sent Paul George back to the
- 19:32Speaker 1: Boston Celtics and Jalen Brown to the seventy six Ers,
- 19:36Speaker 1: the former Finals MVP, the reactions we had sort of
- 19:42Speaker 1: indicated a chance that Lebron James would sign eventually with Philadelphia.
- 19:47Speaker 1: And I want to let you rewind a little bit.
- 19:50Speaker 1: We'll pull the receipt and let you hear that clip
- 19:54Speaker 1: from back on July second.
- 19:56Speaker 12: Take a listen, Well, guess who can take the NBA
- 19:59Speaker 12: minim of seven million dollars? Uh oh, Lebron James. If
- 20:06Speaker 12: they add Lebron, I would Ben. I'd be at his
- 20:08Speaker 12: house right now with some chocolates and some flowers and
- 20:15Speaker 12: a check for seven million dollars and change and escalators. Hey,
- 20:20Speaker 12: if you make the All Star Game, if you score
- 20:24Speaker 12: twenty points, if you have five assists the game, if
- 20:28Speaker 12: you have five rebounds a game, We're gonna pay you extra.
- 20:31Speaker 12: But you can do that incentives because they're based on performance.
- 20:36Speaker 12: It's not a guarantee that will go toward the contract.
- 20:40Speaker 12: So theoretically you can have Lebron signed for seven million,
- 20:44Speaker 12: but he can make twenty.
- 20:48Speaker 4: So do that and you you.
- 20:51Speaker 12: Basically have bought a championship. There is They will win
- 20:55Speaker 12: seventy five games with Lebron James that powerful with Joel
- 21:00Speaker 12: Einbid and those three are young assassins, Jolin b will
- 21:05Speaker 12: not have to play but twenty minutes a.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Game, seventy five wins. You said he was, You said
- 21:11Speaker 2: m B was sitting out of twenty games.
- 21:13Speaker 12: They will still win seventy five games with Joel and
- 21:16Speaker 12: B playing twenty minutes a game.
- 21:18Speaker 11: Wow, I'm not sure.
- 21:19Speaker 12: All you need is a guy that can block shots
- 21:22Speaker 12: and rebound and you put him out there with Lebronay,
- 21:26Speaker 12: how many balls do you have? Like, well, that's a
- 21:29Speaker 12: bad question asked thanks call. I know you have to
- 21:32Speaker 12: answer call. But how many shots Lebron's gonna take? How
- 21:37Speaker 12: many shots? Will Brown tape and B and B is
- 21:41Speaker 12: gonna take at least ten shots a game playing twenty
- 21:45Speaker 12: minutes conservatively, that's conservative. And then you have MAXI he's
- 21:50Speaker 12: gonna get downhill and get seventeen shots a game. And
- 21:53Speaker 12: then you have Edgecombe that's gonna get between ten and
- 21:57Speaker 12: fifteen shots a game. So that's a lot of ball
- 22:01Speaker 12: production and shot production. So I don't see a team
- 22:06Speaker 12: being able to combat that, because if you try to
- 22:10Speaker 12: load up and double team the ball, Lebron is gonna
- 22:14Speaker 12: score thirty points on you. And Lebron will also sometimes
- 22:19Speaker 12: take Hey, I handle the ball. This guy can't defend me.
- 22:24Speaker 12: Get to the basket. I'm gonna put it to close
- 22:26Speaker 12: to the rim. He Lebron can average on a team
- 22:30Speaker 12: like that. Lebron can average tennis sis a game, and.
- 22:34Speaker 2: That that was the vision for him. In la as
- 22:37Speaker 2: being the third option. But Luca came and it changed everything.
- 22:42Speaker 12: And if I was the Lakers and I got Luca
- 22:45Speaker 12: by hooker, by crook, which they got him by crook,
- 22:51Speaker 12: I would have I would have done the same thing.
- 22:53Speaker 12: I'd have told Lebron hey, man, we got a young
- 22:56Speaker 12: guy that we want to hit your wagon to.
- 23:01Speaker 1: He called it over three weeks ago and now here
- 23:04Speaker 1: to follow up on what turned out to be one
- 23:08Speaker 1: of the world's strongest takes is the world's strongest man.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Co host of The Morning Kickoff, Mark Henry, who is celebrating.
- 23:17Speaker 4: What's going on, Jake, Hey, I mean.
- 23:19Speaker 1: You've got to be walking a little bit taller this
- 23:22Speaker 1: morning slash early afternoon, because this was something in terms
- 23:26Speaker 1: of Lebron James going to Philadelphia, Mark, that you were
- 23:30Speaker 1: all over right from the jump when we were breaking
- 23:32Speaker 1: down that Jalen Brown trade. So I thought it'd be
- 23:34Speaker 1: fun to bring you back on see if you're still
- 23:37Speaker 1: feeling this way and this optimistic about the Sixers.
- 23:41Speaker 2: So much for a slow Friday.
- 23:42Speaker 4: Though.
- 23:44Speaker 12: Slow Friday my rear end. Hey, I love being right.
- 23:50Speaker 12: I love me some me, Jake, but I'm gonna tell
- 23:53Speaker 12: you this is a scary thing for the NBA. It's
- 24:01Speaker 12: not over now. They have to make some more moves
- 24:04Speaker 12: because they have big lethargic centers behind Jake, behind Joel
- 24:10Speaker 12: and b They're gonna have to like move those guys
- 24:14Speaker 12: around and get guys that are more mobile, rim running guys,
- 24:19Speaker 12: kind of like what they had with Jackson Hayes at
- 24:23Speaker 12: Los Angeles. More to that style of center. They they
- 24:32Speaker 12: have the potential to win it. I don't see, and
- 24:35Speaker 12: I may have exaggerated a little bit saying that they
- 24:39Speaker 12: would win seventy five games.
- 24:41Speaker 2: They win seventy three, they're going to tie the record.
- 24:44Speaker 4: They're going to tie the record.
- 24:46Speaker 1: So you're talking about the depth chart at center. Right
- 24:49Speaker 1: behind Joel ANDMB. They've got Adam Bona, the young center
- 24:54Speaker 1: from Nigeria. They've also got Ariol Tookportige and I Broom
- 24:58Speaker 1: from Auburn. So you think that's maybe their next move
- 25:01Speaker 1: is beefing up behind Joel embiid. One thing that that
- 25:04Speaker 1: clip didn't mention was the kind of intentional load management
- 25:08Speaker 1: strategy that you and I talked about the Sixers employing.
- 25:11Speaker 1: If they go this route, and I think for Philadelphia,
- 25:15Speaker 1: right your number one priority is keeping Joel Embiid healthy
- 25:19Speaker 1: for the postseason because I feel like an injury to
- 25:21Speaker 1: Mbid could have a similar impact on the Sixers next
- 25:24Speaker 1: year as the Doncic injury had on the Lakers this year.
- 25:28Speaker 12: Never will I have him play more than twenty five
- 25:32Speaker 12: minutes in a game. I mean ten minutes in the
- 25:37Speaker 12: second half, fifteen minutes in the first half, numbers like that.
- 25:43Speaker 12: That way, you don't get penalized. If you want to
- 25:47Speaker 12: just come to the league and say, hey, look we're
- 25:51Speaker 12: gonna load man as Joel Embiid. He's never going to
- 25:53Speaker 12: play it back to back. There's about you know, we
- 25:58Speaker 12: want to keep him capped at forty five games for
- 26:02Speaker 12: the season, then just pay the money. But you can
- 26:08Speaker 12: get by with Joe and b paying ten to fifteen
- 26:12Speaker 12: minutes a half mor Then just do it the whole
- 26:17Speaker 12: season and then you'll you'll I think you've fixed the
- 26:23Speaker 12: Eels when it comes to him getting injured.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Mark Henry's here, We're talking Lebron James and what he
- 26:30Speaker 1: called his last decision heading to Philadelphia on a two year,
- 26:33Speaker 1: eight million dollar deal. You were close, I thought you
- 26:35Speaker 1: got you predicted what seven million dollars on that deal.
- 26:38Speaker 1: For Lebron's that's pretty close in today's NBA. Do you
- 26:41Speaker 1: think this was ultimately Lebron's best chance of winning a
- 26:45Speaker 1: title this decision? I mean, aside from maybe a team
- 26:48Speaker 1: like the Spurs. You and I went through a lot
- 26:50Speaker 1: of possibilities a couple of weeks ago on the segment
- 26:53Speaker 1: that we aired a clip from a second ago. Did
- 26:55Speaker 1: Lebron ultimately go to his best shot of winning an
- 26:58Speaker 1: NBA title next season?
- 27:00Speaker 12: I think Lebron's best fit would have been Golden State, Miami,
- 27:09Speaker 12: San Antonio Spurs. Those were the only three teams that
- 27:13Speaker 12: I felt like he could have a chance at winning
- 27:16Speaker 12: other than Philadelphia, who was my first choice and who
- 27:21Speaker 12: I put the most stock into, just because Lebron doesn't
- 27:25Speaker 12: have to score on that team to win.
- 27:29Speaker 4: He could score ten points a game and a lot
- 27:33Speaker 4: of that will be in.
- 27:34Speaker 12: Free throws because he's going to be the best post
- 27:38Speaker 12: up option and he's a distributor at a high level.
- 27:44Speaker 12: And if you have ty these young man, these guys
- 27:49Speaker 12: can score from every possible way. Tyree's MAXI running around screens,
- 27:56Speaker 12: hitting him, coming off screens, him being able to get
- 28:00Speaker 12: his own shot. Same thing with Edgecombe Lebron James in
- 28:06Speaker 12: the post uff game, Lebron James havn't played with a
- 28:10Speaker 12: guy uh that can get to the basket slashing.
- 28:19Speaker 4: Like Brown since he played with Dwayne Wade.
- 28:23Speaker 12: And you saw how Lebron used to draw the double team.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Wade would cut, Lebron would.
- 28:29Speaker 12: Bounce past Love pass behind the back pass. He would
- 28:33Speaker 12: always get Wade the ball. And Wade was the dominant
- 28:38Speaker 12: scorer in their in their unit. That's who Lebron is
- 28:42Speaker 12: gonna be.
- 28:43Speaker 4: For this team. It's it's scary, man. They like everybody's
- 28:48Speaker 4: saying that the Knicks.
- 28:50Speaker 12: And Miami have a chance, and I don't think so,
- 28:53Speaker 12: not in the West, not in the East.
- 28:55Speaker 1: All Right, Well, I'm gonna ask you to kind of
- 28:57Speaker 1: play Devil's advocate on this mark because you're pretty bullish
- 29:01Speaker 1: on this Sixers team picking them to go with seventy
- 29:04Speaker 1: three and nine next season. I don't think you're going
- 29:06Speaker 1: to find a lot of experts picking them to win
- 29:08Speaker 1: that many games.
- 29:09Speaker 2: What's the way this goes wrong?
- 29:11Speaker 1: What's the way that it falls apart for the Sixers
- 29:14Speaker 1: next year?
- 29:15Speaker 2: If it were to.
- 29:18Speaker 12: Maybe an injury to one of the big three Maxi
- 29:24Speaker 12: edge comb or Brown. I think that even with joelen
- 29:29Speaker 12: b playing limited minutes, they still would have success. They
- 29:36Speaker 12: with an injury, they will win fifty games.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Fifty five games, and that's about where the odds makers
- 29:43Speaker 1: see their season going. Because the East got a lot
- 29:45Speaker 1: better this offseason. I talked in the opening of the
- 29:47Speaker 1: show about that entire division of you and I were
- 29:50Speaker 1: both scratching our heads a little bit about the Boston
- 29:52Speaker 1: Celtics and and the Toronto Raptors are obviously in a
- 29:54Speaker 1: little bit of limbo. But the Eastern Conference as a whole,
- 29:57Speaker 1: I think stacks up a lot more competitively than it
- 30:00Speaker 1: has maybe in the last three or four years it has.
- 30:03Speaker 4: I see the Raptors have gotten better.
- 30:06Speaker 12: Indiana Pacers are gonna be light years better because of
- 30:10Speaker 12: having Tyrese Maxie back and making the moves that they made.
- 30:15Speaker 4: Uh. Miami is definitely gonna be a force.
- 30:18Speaker 6: Uh.
- 30:19Speaker 12: The Cleveland Cavaliers will be the Cleveland Cavaliers.
- 30:23Speaker 4: Detroit will be Detroit.
- 30:25Speaker 12: I don't see them doing much more than they did
- 30:29Speaker 12: this season.
- 30:30Speaker 4: Detroit they did good. They made it to the.
- 30:33Speaker 12: Playoffs, and they had a run in the playoffs. But
- 30:36Speaker 12: that's where it ends. Because when the matchups happen. They're
- 30:41Speaker 12: gonna have trouble with New York and they're gonna have
- 30:44Speaker 12: trouble with Philadelphia.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Well, look, Mark, I got to give you your flowers
- 30:48Speaker 1: because you were all over this right when we talked
- 30:50Speaker 1: about the trade three weeks ago. Where does this kind
- 30:53Speaker 1: of stack up for you in terms of world's strongest
- 30:56Speaker 1: takes or maybe not, you know, world's strongest takes in particular,
- 30:58Speaker 1: but just take you've had that have ended up coming
- 31:02Speaker 1: to fruition since you've been doing this.
- 31:04Speaker 12: You know, I'm not trying to be bragging docious like
- 31:10Speaker 12: like that. I've had a few takes that came to
- 31:15Speaker 12: fruition and people go, where'd you get that from?
- 31:19Speaker 4: Like, how'd you come up with that?
- 31:21Speaker 12: It's just the brain, just a thought process of what
- 31:25Speaker 12: I see and what if I was a coach, what
- 31:29Speaker 12: would I be afraid of? And that is just how
- 31:33Speaker 12: I made my decision.
- 31:35Speaker 1: No comparable, no comparable kind of takes that have come
- 31:41Speaker 1: to fruition because I'm not afraid to brag about it.
- 31:43Speaker 1: I'd said DeVante Smith was going to win the Heisman
- 31:45Speaker 1: before the twenty twenty season.
- 31:47Speaker 2: I'm never going to have it.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Take that good again, and I'm fully aware of that
- 31:50Speaker 1: even at the age of twenty six.
- 31:53Speaker 4: Jake, I'm in my old age. I just can't remember it.
- 31:57Speaker 12: Like everything that you know really snappy, I would have
- 32:02Speaker 12: to sit here and think about it, and that makes
- 32:04Speaker 12: for very dull radio.
- 32:06Speaker 1: All right, well, we'll come back to you on it.
- 32:08Speaker 1: We'll give you a chance to think about it, maybe
- 32:10Speaker 1: for another day. But before you go, Mark, I wanted
- 32:12Speaker 1: to get your takeaways from SEC media days. I know
- 32:14Speaker 1: you and Cameron Parker had a great show this morning
- 32:17Speaker 1: talking about it. What's sticking with you here as we
- 32:19Speaker 1: head into the weekend and turn the page from Tampa
- 32:22Speaker 1: and move even closer to the college football season for Texas.
- 32:26Speaker 12: Well, I'm looking forward to this season because you know,
- 32:31Speaker 12: you may want to put one of these as my
- 32:36Speaker 12: as my take. I think this is a This is
- 32:43Speaker 12: a Texas team that I think is gonna do like Indiana.
- 32:48Speaker 12: I think through the season, they're going to have a
- 32:51Speaker 12: couple of really close games, but they're gonna come out
- 32:54Speaker 12: on top. And because of the diversity in what Texas
- 33:05Speaker 12: can do, I don't see Arch winning the Heisman because
- 33:12Speaker 12: they're going to run the ball a lot and that
- 33:15Speaker 12: he's gonna, I think, be a better percentage quarterback than
- 33:21Speaker 12: he has been and show people that he can throw
- 33:25Speaker 12: the ball from different angles. But yeahfinitely, and most definitely
- 33:35Speaker 12: I think that the Longhorns win national championship this year.
- 33:40Speaker 2: I love how you snuck that part in right on
- 33:42Speaker 2: the end.
- 33:42Speaker 1: We're breaking down arch bandings, throws, and then there's the
- 33:45Speaker 1: there's the real take Texas as national champions and hopefully
- 33:49Speaker 1: we're revisiting this in a few months, just like we
- 33:51Speaker 1: did your Lebron James the Philadelphia take.
- 33:54Speaker 4: Mark.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Thanks so much for stopping by, And yeah, you'll be
- 33:57Speaker 1: standing a little taller this weekend.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Know when you got that one right?
- 34:01Speaker 4: Well, Jake, I cannot.
- 34:06Speaker 12: I can't leave without giving you.
- 34:10Speaker 4: Let me let me let me see your your number
- 34:12Speaker 4: is three or one number.
- 34:14Speaker 1: That's right where I can when I can read it
- 34:16Speaker 1: further than that on the air.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yet one I was not gonna give everybody out there.
- 34:21Speaker 12: I'm just saying I wanted to make sure because I
- 34:23Speaker 12: have four Jakes in my mind. I wanted to make
- 34:27Speaker 12: sure that what I sent to you got to your producer,
- 34:31Speaker 12: because uh, I sent you something that's going.
- 34:35Speaker 4: To give light to your career, to your uh, to
- 34:40Speaker 4: your week, and.
- 34:42Speaker 12: I'm I'm willing, Jake, I'm willing to sit one out
- 34:45Speaker 12: for you and come back in the next segment after
- 34:48Speaker 12: your break.
- 34:49Speaker 1: All right, let's let's let's go ahead and take a
- 34:51Speaker 1: break and we'll come back with more with the World's
- 34:53Speaker 1: Strongest Man, Mark Henry on AM thirteen Zone, wrapping up
- 34:59Speaker 1: the two of o'clock hour on today's show AM thirteen
- 35:02Speaker 1: hundred The Zone. You just heard the promo in the
- 35:04Speaker 1: morning kickoff every day from seven to nine o'clock, My Carball,
- 35:08Speaker 1: Harje and the World's Strongest Man, Mark Henry.
- 35:10Speaker 2: Who's with us now?
- 35:11Speaker 1: And Mark, why don't you why don't you set up
- 35:13Speaker 1: the little item you sent me during the break that
- 35:16Speaker 1: we're going to share with everybody here.
- 35:18Speaker 12: So, Jake, the show that I did with you last
- 35:21Speaker 12: we have such a good time. And I asked you
- 35:24Speaker 12: had you ever heard of your fearless leader Craig Way.
- 35:31Speaker 4: Doing rap songs?
- 35:32Speaker 2: And you were like, what, I cannot even picture this.
- 35:36Speaker 12: Well, I reached into the crates and was able to
- 35:43Speaker 12: find find Craig Way giving his version of Texas hip hop.
- 35:52Speaker 4: Throw that throw that clip?
- 35:54Speaker 13: Now, what h town?
- 35:56Speaker 4: Because we know that they feel it.
- 35:58Speaker 13: Free Wheeler four peeling back the bad for scrilling, swish
- 36:01Speaker 13: and Burnham, bouncing tuner, sitting glow on fours. I'm rolling
- 36:05Speaker 13: through the lock, slamming doze on buttons and I'm a
- 36:08Speaker 13: Clyde clide slippity slide, pop trunk, let it down, show
- 36:12Speaker 13: up at my ride, roll out.
- 36:14Speaker 4: The red carpet, never buy it.
- 36:15Speaker 13: From punks, valet piece and chain starch to my chain.
- 36:20Speaker 13: Hit the club showing love. Tip the dancer, a gun
- 36:23Speaker 13: got killing the club, crapped the glove one more time
- 36:26Speaker 13: for they mine. I'm gonna put it down. It's that boy,
- 36:29Speaker 13: Pat Pat, Yeah, I got the clown.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I just want to drop it all night long.
- 36:34Speaker 10: Ee.
- 36:35Speaker 4: I just want to drop it all night long.
- 36:37Speaker 11: Yeah, drop it and drop it.
- 36:39Speaker 12: Yeah, I do a fabulous Oh my goodness, Mark, you
- 36:46Speaker 12: just made my ear.
- 36:47Speaker 11: You just made my year.
- 36:48Speaker 2: I've been at the zone.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I'm almost a year and I could have never I
- 36:51Speaker 1: don't think I've lashed that hard in this studio, and
- 36:54Speaker 1: Craig's not here to defend himself for give contact.
- 36:56Speaker 2: But that was spectacular.
- 36:58Speaker 12: It was big tag and I'm telling you right now
- 37:02Speaker 12: that I would I would pay a lot of money
- 37:05Speaker 12: to be at the club and seeing, Uh, Craig Way tips.
- 37:14Speaker 2: He's look Mark, He's he's.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Talked about before, wanting to be not just a a
- 37:22Speaker 1: savant in play by play.
- 37:23Speaker 2: I don't he didn't use the word savant, but you know, wanting.
- 37:26Speaker 1: To be an expert in every He calls him elocutionary styles.
- 37:31Speaker 1: He said he wants to like run an auction in
- 37:33Speaker 1: addition to colleague play by play things like that. This
- 37:37Speaker 1: tells me he's a little closer to that goal than
- 37:39Speaker 1: he thought he would be. I can't wait to ask
- 37:41Speaker 1: you about this when he gets back.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Listen.
- 37:45Speaker 12: Uh, he's probably right now going damn it, Mark Henry,
- 37:50Speaker 12: I'm gonna get you. But guys, I just wanted to
- 37:53Speaker 12: let you know that, you know, Craig Way is multi faceted,
- 37:58Speaker 12: an incredible entity.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Along with being the voice of the Texas.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Launhawn, We've got so much to talk about when he
- 38:06Speaker 1: gets back, and I'm sure he's gonna he's gonna go
- 38:09Speaker 1: through his files and and maybe dig up something else.
- 38:12Speaker 1: What was it that you sent me on accident before
- 38:14Speaker 1: that start? Was a rap battle clip of some kind?
- 38:18Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 38:18Speaker 12: Man, Like there's a there, there's there was a rapper
- 38:22Speaker 12: that he looks like me when I had the dreads right,
- 38:26Speaker 12: and you know, he has a hoodie on and he's
- 38:29Speaker 12: rapping and he you know, one of the lyrics in
- 38:33Speaker 12: his line was, I come off like Mark Henry and
- 38:35Speaker 12: he took off his hoodie and Chicken's brigeerads. But I
- 38:41Speaker 12: found a lot of I get a lot of the
- 38:45Speaker 12: feeling when people used me in hip hop songs. I've
- 38:48Speaker 12: been in about three of them, and it just it
- 38:52Speaker 12: just means that people in the culture of that industry
- 38:56Speaker 12: they respect you.
- 38:58Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is. It is the the ultimate sign
- 39:01Speaker 1: of respect. Hey, that you just you don't understand. There
- 39:06Speaker 1: is a this has to be recreated, re recorded. We're
- 39:09Speaker 1: gonna lay down some tracks with Craig in the future. Mark,
- 39:11Speaker 1: thank you so much for sending that and thanks for
- 39:14Speaker 1: joining us today.
- 39:15Speaker 12: You're welcome, man. You're doing a great job. Man, anytime,
- 39:18Speaker 12: just give me a holler. I'm here for you brother.
- 39:20Speaker 2: You guys as well see it.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Mark.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Thanks That is the world's strongest man. Mark Henry joining
- 39:26Speaker 1: us to wrap up a two o'clock hour That.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna remember that one for a while.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Still the come, we've got much more from SEC media days.
- 39:36Speaker 1: We will hear Steve Sarkeshan's thoughts on where his roster stands.
- 39:41Speaker 1: We're also gonna give you a chance to see the
- 39:46Speaker 1: SEC preseason polls. They've got it all first, second, and
- 39:49Speaker 1: third team. We'll tell you which longhorns are where, and
- 39:52Speaker 1: we'll also tell you the order of finish as predicted
- 39:55Speaker 1: by the media members in Tampa Bay. During our next
- 39:58Speaker 1: segment of the show, that three fifteen, Chris Hummer from
- 40:00Speaker 1: twenty four to seven Sports joins us. We'll have inconceivable
- 40:04Speaker 1: moved to the three o'clock hour today. We usually have
- 40:07Speaker 1: that at around two forty, but today we had to
- 40:10Speaker 1: make a special exception for the World's Strongest Man coming
- 40:13Speaker 1: up in the four o'clock hour. Evan Veif joins us.
- 40:15Speaker 1: We'll hear from Colin Simmons. We're just getting started here
- 40:18Speaker 1: on this Friday afternoon edition of the program. You can
- 40:22Speaker 1: text us as always eight one five three zero.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Make sure you've got the right Jake.
- 40:26Speaker 1: Now text the word Texas followed by your question or comment.
- 40:29Speaker 1: That's eight one five three zero. The Fund's only just
- 40:33Speaker 1: starting hour number two coming up or into our second
- 41:08Speaker 1: hour of today's show, Jay kerrman in for Craig Way,
- 41:11Speaker 1: moving over from the producer seat into the fill in
- 41:15Speaker 1: hosting role while Craig flies back from Tampa. Always appreciate
- 41:19Speaker 1: you tuning in both here on thirteen hundred The Zone
- 41:22Speaker 1: and on the iHeartRadio app. The last piece of business
- 41:26Speaker 1: at the SEC Media Days in Tampa is the polls,
- 41:30Speaker 1: the preseason polls taken by all the media members there,
- 41:34Speaker 1: and here was what they came up with in terms
- 41:37Speaker 1: of the predicted order of finish in the SEC this season.
- 41:42Speaker 1: And there was a big gap in the first place
- 41:45Speaker 1: votes from the top two on down. You're thinking to yourself, Okay,
- 41:49Speaker 1: there's probably a clear cut top two that you've heard
- 41:52Speaker 1: a consensus of this week that you've heard other coaches
- 41:55Speaker 1: tip the cap too with eighty eight first place votes
- 41:58Speaker 1: to be the SEC champion, and the Georgia Bulldogs came
- 42:01Speaker 1: in at number one in the poll. The Longhorns were second,
- 42:04Speaker 1: barely behind them in terms of the total votes received
- 42:07Speaker 1: fifty seven first place votes. No other team got more
- 42:10Speaker 1: than six. Ole miss was third they got six first
- 42:14Speaker 1: place votes. Texas A and M fourth with five, and
- 42:17Speaker 1: then in the rest of the predicted order of finish,
- 42:21Speaker 1: it goes to LSU five, Alabama six. That's, by the way,
- 42:26Speaker 1: the lowest Alabama has been in a predicted order of
- 42:29Speaker 1: SEC finish since the pre Nick Saban days. Yeah, anyone
- 42:33Speaker 1: remember Mike Shula. Yeah, my dad, my grandfather, and I
- 42:37Speaker 1: do growing up in an Alabama household. My dad grew
- 42:40Speaker 1: up in Birmingham. His dad from Jackson, Mississippi, went to Alabama.
- 42:44Speaker 1: The seventh ranked team is Oklahoma in the preseason poll.
- 42:49Speaker 1: Eighth is Tennessee, Florida, ninth, Missouri tenth, South Carolina eleventh,
- 42:54Speaker 1: Auburn twelfth, Vanderbilt thirteenth. Diego Pavia by the way from
- 43:00Speaker 1: the Baltimore Ravens. I think that was yesterday, maybe two
- 43:05Speaker 1: days ago, in the middle of SEC media days.
- 43:07Speaker 2: We didn't have time to get to it.
- 43:08Speaker 1: Diego Pavia at the moment not looking at the option
- 43:13Speaker 1: of an NFL career. We'll see if another team picks
- 43:16Speaker 1: him up, if he plays football, perhaps in Canada, a
- 43:18Speaker 1: different supplemental league besides the NFL, But at the moment,
- 43:24Speaker 1: not looking like he is in a good place in
- 43:26Speaker 1: terms of making a fifty three man roster for the
- 43:28Speaker 1: start of this NFL season. We'll see if he gets
- 43:30Speaker 1: any other preseason looks. So Vanderbilt down at thirteen. Now,
- 43:34Speaker 1: this is one that a lot of teams are split
- 43:39Speaker 1: on because they're gonna be relying on true freshman Jared Curtis.
- 43:43Speaker 1: The skilled players around Curtis to me are among the
- 43:48Speaker 1: middle of the pack in the SEC right, so counting
- 43:52Speaker 1: on a true freshman. Seeing the schedule Vanderbilt has, I
- 43:56Speaker 1: don't believe that the schedules shouldn't play too much in
- 44:00Speaker 1: your preseason predicted order of finish. Maybe other media members
- 44:05Speaker 1: don't see it that way, but Vanderbilt certainly has a
- 44:08Speaker 1: tough schedule.
- 44:09Speaker 2: They have to think a path to.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Beating this expectation of thirteenth much more than some of
- 44:19Speaker 1: the other teams around them. And the other teams around
- 44:23Speaker 1: them include Kentucky at fourteenth. They got a first place
- 44:25Speaker 1: a vote, Kentucky did Mississippi State fifteenth, and Arkansas picked
- 44:30Speaker 1: to finish in sixteenth in the conference. There's some folks
- 44:35Speaker 1: putting out stories today about Cold Diego Pavia potentially returned
- 44:39Speaker 1: to Vanderbilt, and might the Cole Hudson five for five
- 44:43Speaker 1: lawsuit potentially open the door to that. So that's a
- 44:46Speaker 1: story to put a pin in over the weekend and
- 44:49Speaker 1: see what Pavia tries to do next as he looks
- 44:51Speaker 1: for his next steps. But those are the predicted orders
- 44:54Speaker 1: of finish in the SEC Media Days Poll, Texas at
- 44:58Speaker 1: number two, just behind Georgia, who is picked to win
- 45:03Speaker 1: the conference this season. As far as the first team
- 45:07Speaker 1: All SEC Trinidad, Shambliss from Ole, miss is at quarterback.
- 45:11Speaker 1: His teammate q and Lacy and Amon Hardy from Missouri
- 45:14Speaker 1: are the two running backs. At wide receiver, Cam Coleman
- 45:18Speaker 1: of Texas and Ryan Coleman Williams of Alabama, who didn't
- 45:23Speaker 1: have the greatest year last season but certainly showed as
- 45:26Speaker 1: a freshman, is as talented as anybody in that outstanding
- 45:29Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven wide receiver class headed to the NFL
- 45:33Speaker 1: likely next year. Trade As Green of LSU is listed
- 45:36Speaker 1: as the top tight end. At offensive guard slash tackle,
- 45:40Speaker 1: Trevor Guseby of Texas is on the first team, joined
- 45:43Speaker 1: by Kateen Green of Missouri, Jordan Seaton from lshu Ernest
- 45:47Speaker 1: Green the third from Georgia. Drew Bobo, son of their
- 45:51Speaker 1: offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, is the center and the all
- 45:55Speaker 1: purpose nod went to Mario Craver of Texas A and M,
- 46:00Speaker 1: and then on first team defense, Colin Simmons on the
- 46:03Speaker 1: defensive line gets a nod, joined by Will Echoles of
- 46:05Speaker 1: ole Miss, Dillon Stewart of South Carolina, and Prince will
- 46:08Speaker 1: Uman Miellen, who transferred from ole Miss to follow Lane
- 46:11Speaker 1: Kiffen to LSU at linebacker with weeks of LSU is
- 46:16Speaker 1: listed along with Xavier Atkins of Auburn and Longhorn Rashim
- 46:19Speaker 1: Biles coming over from ACC player of the Year defensively
- 46:23Speaker 1: at pitt to be the linebacker patrolling the middle for
- 46:27Speaker 1: the Longhorns, and Will must Champ this season at defensive back.
- 46:30Speaker 1: No Longhorns made the first team. kJ Bolden of Georgia
- 46:33Speaker 1: joined Ellis Robinson, his Bulldog teammate, and then two guys
- 46:37Speaker 1: from Alabama's Abian Brown, who had the big pick six
- 46:39Speaker 1: of John Mattier in the College Football Playoff game, and
- 46:43Speaker 1: then Bray Hubbard, we'll be back for his senior season
- 46:46Speaker 1: playing safety. Other Longhorns listed on defense Rolani McDonald is
- 46:51Speaker 1: on the third team for defensive backs. On offense, Arch
- 46:55Speaker 1: Manning is the second team quarterback. Ryan Niblett gets the
- 46:59Speaker 1: all purpose nod on the second team offensive page of
- 47:04Speaker 1: this poll. Ryan Wingo is a third team All SEC
- 47:08Speaker 1: wide receiver according to the preseason poll, and then at
- 47:11Speaker 1: running back, Hollywood Smothers gets a nod on the third team,
- 47:14Speaker 1: as does Brandon Baker, who is listed as a third
- 47:17Speaker 1: team offensive guard. Ryan Niblett was also listed as the
- 47:20Speaker 1: first team return specialist when it comes to the special
- 47:24Speaker 1: team side, and Longhorns long snapper Trade Debuke is on
- 47:28Speaker 1: the second team in the preseason specialist category. So we'll
- 47:32Speaker 1: get some more thoughts on this coming up in the
- 47:35Speaker 1: next segment when Chris Hummer from two four seven Sports,
- 47:38Speaker 1: a national college football writer, joins us for a conversation
- 47:42Speaker 1: that's coming up as well as much more from SEC
- 47:45Speaker 1: media days right here on AM thirteen hundred Zone and
- 47:48Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio app. We continue on a Friday afternoon post
- 47:52Speaker 1: media day glow here on AM thirteen hundred The Zone
- 47:56Speaker 1: here to talk about some of the things we just
- 48:00Speaker 1: revealed as far as the SEC preseason polls. Go is
- 48:04Speaker 1: someone who covers college football on the national level with
- 48:07Speaker 1: CBS Sports and two four seven Sports. Chris Hummer joins
- 48:11Speaker 1: the show Chris, thanks so much for the time on
- 48:12Speaker 1: what I'm sure has been a busy week.
- 48:15Speaker 11: Yeah. Absolutely and happy to be here.
- 48:17Speaker 2: Chris.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I know you put out a piece this morning on
- 48:20Speaker 1: some of your reactions to the teams we just talked
- 48:23Speaker 1: about the SEC preseason teams that we revealed earlier on
- 48:27Speaker 1: the show. What kind of takeaways do you have this
- 48:31Speaker 1: morning after getting a chance to review all of those.
- 48:35Speaker 14: Yeah, well, I mean, I think you can only do
- 48:38Speaker 14: so many takeaways from a preseason All SEC team. But
- 48:43Speaker 14: I think my first thought at the top is Georgia
- 48:46Speaker 14: and Texas are quite clearly, at least per the media,
- 48:50Speaker 14: the two most talented teams in the league. They both
- 48:53Speaker 14: have eleven plus starters represented on the preseason All SEC team.
- 48:57Speaker 14: And I mean, if you do some quick knapkin, that's
- 49:00Speaker 14: fifty percent or better, which is a pretty good hit
- 49:02Speaker 14: rate for starting twenty two. So you can understand why
- 49:05Speaker 14: those two teams sit a top the standings. And there
- 49:09Speaker 14: are quite a few teams behind them like Oklahoma, Alabama,
- 49:12Speaker 14: Old Miss LSU that are really talented as well, and
- 49:16Speaker 14: you see that reflecting the standings. But at least to
- 49:18Speaker 14: me and I agree with the voters on this front
- 49:21Speaker 14: standpoint that at Georgia and Texas going into the season
- 49:27Speaker 14: should be the favorites in the SEC.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Chris, is there anything further down the ballot as far
- 49:32Speaker 1: as the preseason order of finish where you might differ
- 49:35Speaker 1: from the consensus of those who were in Tampa.
- 49:39Speaker 14: Oh, it's tough for the SEC, right because like on paper,
- 49:45Speaker 14: I think Mississippi State is going to be.
- 49:47Speaker 11: Pretty good this year. I think they're going to be
- 49:48Speaker 11: much improved.
- 49:50Speaker 14: But being much improved in the SEC when you have
- 49:52Speaker 14: to play nine conference games doesn't necessarily translate to a
- 49:55Speaker 14: lot of wins. But if I want to take a flyer,
- 49:58Speaker 14: like from nine to sixteen as a team that I think,
- 50:02Speaker 14: if things go right, could really be competitive, it would
- 50:05Speaker 14: be Florida, and then it'd probably be Kentucky. Florida I
- 50:09Speaker 14: think is as talented as some of the teams closer
- 50:13Speaker 14: to the top of those rankings.
- 50:14Speaker 11: They're really, really, really good up front.
- 50:17Speaker 14: If they hit on that quarterback position, they have one
- 50:19Speaker 14: of the best running backs in the country, one of
- 50:22Speaker 14: the best receiver rooms in the country. If they can
- 50:24Speaker 14: hit on that quarterback position, they're gonna be pretty dangerous.
- 50:27Speaker 14: And I actually feel the same way about Kentucky. If
- 50:29Speaker 14: Kenny Minshew's good, they have a really good offensive line.
- 50:32Speaker 14: I think they have enough skill pieces. They still have
- 50:34Speaker 14: a lot of the defensive pieces that made them so
- 50:36Speaker 14: good consistently mark.
- 50:37Speaker 11: Stoops, So those would probably be the two teams.
- 50:40Speaker 14: Where like if I was going to take a flyer
- 50:42Speaker 14: on teams outside the top half that I would look up.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Hey, Kentucky got a first place vote, so you never know.
- 50:48Speaker 1: That's something that I know will Stein brought in a
- 50:51Speaker 1: lot of confidence in bravado to his first SEC media days.
- 50:55Speaker 1: We'll come back to what some of the coaches said,
- 50:57Speaker 1: but I like what you pointed out in your piece
- 50:59Speaker 1: this morning over at CBS Sports, and that is just
- 51:02Speaker 1: how loaded the SEC is at running back. I know
- 51:06Speaker 1: the quarterbacks get a ton of the headlines, and I
- 51:08Speaker 1: do want to get your thoughts on Arch Manning in
- 51:10Speaker 1: a minute, But why are you so excited about this
- 51:12Speaker 1: running back group in the SEC this year?
- 51:16Speaker 14: Well, I mean, I think in general, you could argue
- 51:18Speaker 14: the last decade the running back position hasn't had a
- 51:21Speaker 14: ton of star power in college football. I know Jeremiah
- 51:24Speaker 14: Love just went third overall in the draft, but I
- 51:26Speaker 14: don't think people are like lining up to watch Jeremiah
- 51:30Speaker 14: Love like they maybe were Leonard Fernatt or Christian McCaffrey
- 51:34Speaker 14: or even a Bryce Love like a decade ago. But
- 51:37Speaker 14: I think the SEC this year particularly has just a
- 51:41Speaker 14: ton of star power with that position. I think there
- 51:44Speaker 14: are three guys going into the year that have a
- 51:46Speaker 14: legitimate chance to be first on picks at running back
- 51:48Speaker 14: if you talked to scouts, and they all play in
- 51:49Speaker 14: the SEC. One, as Jayden Babber plays for Florida, it
- 51:53Speaker 14: was the second team pick for the SEC. And then
- 51:55Speaker 14: Keywan Lacy Old obviously a Mott Hardy status is still
- 52:00Speaker 14: a little up in the air as he returned from
- 52:02Speaker 14: the gunshot womb he suffered at a concert this offseason.
- 52:06Speaker 14: But like there's a strong group behind them too, Like
- 52:08Speaker 14: Nate Frasier at Georgia to Sean Bishop of Tennessee, we
- 52:11Speaker 14: were both excreasing all se picks because they came close
- 52:14Speaker 14: to a thousand yards last year.
- 52:16Speaker 11: They were both really good.
- 52:17Speaker 14: I believed Sean Bishop even led the country and rushing
- 52:19Speaker 14: touchdowns with sixteen. And then like we haven't even mentioned
- 52:23Speaker 14: Texas's two headed backfield of Hollywood Smothers and rlike Brown.
- 52:26Speaker 14: I mean really, Brown was a Big twelve first team
- 52:30Speaker 14: selection last year. Had a gone to the draft, he
- 52:33Speaker 14: would have been drafted. Hollywood Smothers is a guy that
- 52:36Speaker 14: like scouts loved too. Like you could legitimately argue like
- 52:40Speaker 14: if you take the top ten running backs that the
- 52:43Speaker 14: SEC would have, half.
- 52:44Speaker 11: Of them are better.
- 52:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Pretty remarkable to think about, and from a Longhorn perspective,
- 52:49Speaker 1: I think all three of those first round prospects you
- 52:52Speaker 1: mentioned bought Florida, Lacey at Ole, miss Hardy at Missouri.
- 52:56Speaker 1: They're all have another thing in common, and that is
- 52:59Speaker 1: on the Longhorn skill schedule this year, which shaped up
- 53:02Speaker 1: to be pretty difficult. Along with it feels like two
- 53:04Speaker 1: thirds of this conferences every single year. You mentioned Hollywood
- 53:09Speaker 1: Smothers coming in one of several transfers and new pieces
- 53:12Speaker 1: that Steve Sarkisian and company brought into surround Arch Manning
- 53:16Speaker 1: with some more talent they hope. In twenty twenty six,
- 53:20Speaker 1: you mentioned Trinidad Chambliss was the correct pick by the
- 53:23Speaker 1: voters at the number one the first SEC All first
- 53:27Speaker 1: team spot in the poll in your piece over at
- 53:30Speaker 1: cbsports dot com, but you mentioned Arch Manning. You expect
- 53:33Speaker 1: him to have a better year in twenty twenty six.
- 53:35Speaker 2: Why is that?
- 53:38Speaker 11: For a number of reasons.
- 53:40Speaker 14: One, he's in his second year as a starter, and
- 53:42Speaker 14: every wrap matters this quarterback.
- 53:46Speaker 6: Really.
- 53:46Speaker 14: I know people were pointing out that he'd been at
- 53:48Speaker 14: Texas for two years, but starters reps are not the
- 53:50Speaker 14: same thing sitting on the bench and observing, so that
- 53:54Speaker 14: makes a huge difference. But mostly I just think the
- 53:57Speaker 14: roster's so much better around him. Texas is clearly quite
- 54:01Speaker 14: aware they have a championship window.
- 54:03Speaker 4: This year.
- 54:03Speaker 11: They built around arch Manning with a purpose.
- 54:07Speaker 14: He saw Steve Starkesian talk essentially about cutting players to
- 54:11Speaker 14: free up cap space, and I mean he's right.
- 54:13Speaker 11: They did.
- 54:14Speaker 14: Like they chose to move on from some players that
- 54:16Speaker 14: were demanding a significant of money money to pursue other
- 54:20Speaker 14: players that could make a bigger impact. Cam Coleman's a
- 54:22Speaker 14: great example of that. Like cam Coleman is looked at
- 54:25Speaker 14: as one of the three best receivers in the country
- 54:28Speaker 14: entering the year, he's a huge upgrade for that receiver
- 54:30Speaker 14: room that suffered its fair share of drops last year.
- 54:33Speaker 14: The offensive line is going to be better on paper,
- 54:37Speaker 14: even if you've removed the Cole Hudson of it all,
- 54:39Speaker 14: which is a different conversation. But they went out and
- 54:42Speaker 14: got one of the top offensive tackles in the portal.
- 54:44Speaker 14: They went out and got one of the most experienced
- 54:46Speaker 14: offensive guards. Like the offensive line is going to have
- 54:49Speaker 14: five thousand plus STAPs going into next year. That's a
- 54:52Speaker 14: huge difference from last year when it was a pretty
- 54:55Speaker 14: unproven unit in some spots. And then obviously at running
- 54:57Speaker 14: back like Trey Weisner was really good for Texas when
- 54:59Speaker 14: he was health day. But Texas went out and got
- 55:02Speaker 14: draft picks in the portal. They have two of the
- 55:04Speaker 14: top ten to fifteen running backs in the country and
- 55:06Speaker 14: their roster now there are no holes and that makes
- 55:10Speaker 14: life a lot easier as a quarterback.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Certainly what Texas is hoping.
- 55:14Speaker 1: Chris Hummer joins US national college football writer over at
- 55:17Speaker 1: two four seven Sports and CBS Sports. Earlier in the week,
- 55:21Speaker 1: you pointed out something that I maybe wasn't quite aware of,
- 55:25Speaker 1: and that is the unique moment we're in right now.
- 55:28Speaker 1: As far as the two teams in the lone Star
- 55:31Speaker 1: Showdown rivalry Texas and Texas A and M being nationally relevant,
- 55:36Speaker 1: being national contenders at the same time. I mean, I
- 55:41Speaker 1: thought your piece was really interesting and pointing out how
- 55:43Speaker 1: long these teams have waited to be competitive in a
- 55:46Speaker 1: moment like this and some of the things that led
- 55:47Speaker 1: to that that maybe weren't the case over the last decade.
- 55:52Speaker 14: Yeah, I mean, I, like many people listening this, I
- 55:55Speaker 14: assume grew up watching and following that rivalry.
- 55:59Speaker 11: It was a Thanksgiving tradition in my house.
- 56:01Speaker 14: And I think what people don't realize is these teams
- 56:04Speaker 14: haven't been good together at the same time very often.
- 56:07Speaker 14: Part of that, Texas A and M has had more
- 56:09Speaker 14: limited runs as a national contender. But even when Texas
- 56:12Speaker 14: A and M was a national contender you think about
- 56:14Speaker 14: in the kind of mid to late twenty tens, Texas
- 56:19Speaker 14: wasn't particularly relevant, and they've gone back and forth. Last
- 56:22Speaker 14: year was the first time in fifty years they both
- 56:24Speaker 14: won ten games together in the same season. They haven't
- 56:27Speaker 14: even even won a combined nineteen games together two straight
- 56:31Speaker 14: years since like the mid nineties, So it's just been
- 56:34Speaker 14: kind of a yo yo effect between the two programs.
- 56:37Speaker 14: And I think there are a lot of reasons why
- 56:39Speaker 14: the teams are good at the same time. Like you
- 56:41Speaker 14: can certainly credit the head coaches. I think you definitely
- 56:43Speaker 14: have to talk about the administrations being more stable. I
- 56:47Speaker 14: think a lot of tex fans remember the Steve Patterson
- 56:50Speaker 14: eira and shake their heads a little bit. And Texas
- 56:52Speaker 14: A and M's had plenty of those situations themselves. But
- 56:55Speaker 14: if we're being honest, like I think a lot of
- 56:57Speaker 14: this has to do with the ability to recruit nationally.
- 57:00Speaker 14: We're in a much different recruiting environment than we were
- 57:02Speaker 14: twenty years ago. And frankly, money like it's kind of
- 57:06Speaker 14: a dirty little secret in the room in college football.
- 57:08Speaker 11: Maybe not a secret anymore.
- 57:09Speaker 14: But Texas and Texas and AM ate two of the
- 57:11Speaker 14: most resourced program country, and you're seeing both programs flex
- 57:15Speaker 14: that muscle not only in high school recruiting, but in
- 57:18Speaker 14: roster attention and roster additions. And I think when you
- 57:22Speaker 14: have all those factors kind of flowing at the same time,
- 57:24Speaker 14: it allows both of them to have the space to
- 57:27Speaker 14: be good. I think they couldn't necessarily be good in
- 57:31Speaker 14: the same way twenty years at the same time being
- 57:33Speaker 14: the same conference, recruit in the same players. But now
- 57:36Speaker 14: that you have the appui or two players nationally, and
- 57:38Speaker 14: you also have the avenue to pay them. I think
- 57:40Speaker 14: it allows both programs to fly together in a way
- 57:43Speaker 14: they have them before.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it makes you wonder how differently those realignment conversations
- 57:48Speaker 1: would have been if the environment was that way, you know,
- 57:51Speaker 1: ten fifteen years ago. It also is something you pointed
- 57:54Speaker 1: out where these two schools are no longer just going
- 57:57Speaker 1: head to head over every elite techis prospect because of
- 58:01Speaker 1: that national footprint that recruiting now has, and you pointed
- 58:04Speaker 1: out how far Mike Elko has come in that area
- 58:07Speaker 1: at Texas A and M recently.
- 58:10Speaker 11: Yeah, Texas A and M. I mean if you look
- 58:13Speaker 11: at their number one of our recruiting.
- 58:15Speaker 14: Class, like, they have players from across the country and
- 58:20Speaker 14: it's been I mean, it's act funny. Actually it's not
- 58:23Speaker 14: just a Texas A and M thaying like Texas fans.
- 58:25Speaker 14: I'm sure remember how much criticism Charlie Strong got initially
- 58:28Speaker 14: for recruiting players from Florida And that was what like
- 58:31Speaker 14: a decade ago, And now it's commonplace for Texas to
- 58:35Speaker 14: go out of state and recruit the best players possible,
- 58:38Speaker 14: and the same thing's true for Texas A and M.
- 58:39Speaker 14: So I think that flexibility allows both head coaches to
- 58:43Speaker 14: pursue the rosters that they see fit and also not
- 58:47Speaker 14: run into each other quite as often, even though that
- 58:49Speaker 14: does happen, as we saw this offseason somebody like John Meredith.
- 58:55Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, No, we'll get to that a little later
- 58:57Speaker 1: on in the program. Chris Hummer from two four seven
- 59:00Speaker 1: Sports and CBS Sports is with us here for just
- 59:02Speaker 1: a couple of more minutes. We heard plenty of SEC
- 59:06Speaker 1: talking points this week in Tampa about how the conference
- 59:09Speaker 1: still certainly views itself at the top of the sport.
- 59:12Speaker 1: We've also heard talking points from the Big Ten and
- 59:14Speaker 1: several other conferences in the last couple of seasons pointing
- 59:17Speaker 1: to the lack of postseason success that the conference has had,
- 59:21Speaker 1: and I know we're going to maybe hear some of
- 59:23Speaker 1: that in Chicago in response to that next week at
- 59:25Speaker 1: Big Ten Media Days. In your opinion, is the SEC, Chris,
- 59:29Speaker 1: still the best conference in the sport heading into twenty
- 59:31Speaker 1: twenty six?
- 59:35Speaker 14: I hate the waffle, but I guess this is kind
- 59:37Speaker 14: of like in what way do you mean? Like, if
- 59:38Speaker 14: you're asking like, are they better in terms of the
- 59:41Speaker 14: scoreboard and winning a commision chamship? No, if you're talking
- 59:44Speaker 14: about depth, top to bottom. Yes, the SEC is still
- 59:47Speaker 14: a better league than the Big Ten, So like, I mean,
- 59:50Speaker 14: I get it, Like I think both conference can argue
- 59:52Speaker 14: that successfully. And I mean you saw what Indiana tot
- 59:56Speaker 14: to Alabama this past season for example. Like, I think
- 59:59Speaker 14: the Big ten best the last couple of years has
- 1:00:01Speaker 14: been better than the SEC's best.
- 1:00:03Speaker 11: But like, are the Big ten's best?
- 1:00:07Speaker 8: Uh?
- 1:00:08Speaker 14: Is the Big Ten top to bottom better than the SEC?
- 1:00:10Speaker 14: I don't think so. So I think it's it's an
- 1:00:14Speaker 14: interesting conversation. I understand why it happens, and I can
- 1:00:16Speaker 14: definitely understand why fan bases from both leagues would argue,
- 1:00:19Speaker 14: especially when you consider the uneven circumstances of the SEC
- 1:00:22Speaker 14: a playing eight league games in past seasons, but the
- 1:00:26Speaker 14: SEC also having a much more difficult path than those
- 1:00:30Speaker 14: those eight games compared to what the Big Ten had.
- 1:00:33Speaker 14: I get it, but I think it just kind of
- 1:00:35Speaker 14: depends on what you're asking. SEC is the deeper league,
- 1:00:38Speaker 14: but right now the Big Ten is the better league
- 1:00:39Speaker 14: at the top.
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: Well, I appreciate that the Fresh takes on it, just
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: because I know it becomes a bit of a of
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: a tire topic and I'm interested to see how the
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: nine game SEC schedule will impact the way maybe strength
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: of schedule is discussed on the national level.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: And we heard.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Some some some fleeting talk about the SEC potential breaking
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: away from the NCAA. I don't know that it's anything
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: more than, you know, potentially a leverage play from Commissioner Sanky,
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: But is this something you could see potentially having legs?
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: How do you react when you sort of see and
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: hear those types of quotes coming out of Tampa, at
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: least on day one.
- 1:01:18Speaker 14: I mean, Greg thank He's never been shy about creating
- 1:01:23Speaker 14: leverage for himself and creating copy points for himself, and
- 1:01:27Speaker 14: I think in this environment it's not surprising to hear
- 1:01:30Speaker 14: something like that.
- 1:01:30Speaker 11: Do I think it's going to happen. Absolutely not.
- 1:01:32Speaker 14: I think the SEC de values itself considerably if it
- 1:01:35Speaker 14: takes it outside, if it takes itself outside of the
- 1:01:37Speaker 14: mechanism and organism that is college football. I don't get
- 1:01:42Speaker 14: me wrong, I'm sure fans would watch, but the season's
- 1:01:45Speaker 14: never going to have the same sort of stakes if
- 1:01:47Speaker 14: you don't have taxes at the end of the year,
- 1:01:49Speaker 14: with the potential to play organ or Ohio State, like,
- 1:01:53Speaker 14: it's just not so yeah, I mean, like Greg. Thank
- 1:01:55Speaker 14: you can say about all he wants, But unless the
- 1:01:57Speaker 14: Big ten and the SEC exit at the same time
- 1:01:59Speaker 14: together and form their own thing, like I really don't
- 1:02:03Speaker 14: consider that much of a much of a threat. Do
- 1:02:07Speaker 14: I think those leagues could come and handle more enforcement
- 1:02:12Speaker 14: on their own. Absolutely, I think it's actually needed in
- 1:02:15Speaker 14: a lot of ways.
- 1:02:16Speaker 11: But do I expect the SEC to.
- 1:02:18Speaker 14: Go out on its own and be its own entity
- 1:02:21Speaker 14: in the next couple of years now?
- 1:02:23Speaker 11: Not at all.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I know there's plenty more to discuss as far
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: as the enforcement the potential anti trust exemption, but really
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I'm just excited to have some football to some actual
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: football to mix into those discussions as well. That we're
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: about a month away from that still in the meantime,
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Thanks for keeping us in the loop, Chris, and appreciate
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: you joining us this afternoon.
- 1:02:42Speaker 11: Absolutely, the actual football cannot come soon enough.
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: Excitly, I'm with you there one hundred percent. Thanks so much,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: Thank you. All Right, that's Chris Huber from two four
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: seven Sports and CBS Sports talking some SEC media Day takeaways.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: When we come back, we'll hear from coach Steve Sarkisian
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: some of his comments to the media in Tampa here
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: on AM thirteen hundred Zone. We continue on this Friday
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: afternoon edition of The Craig Ways Show.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: Thank you Chris Summer from joining us.
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: In the last segment you can read more from him
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: covering all things college football, but particularly here in the
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: state of Texas on x at Chris Underscore Homer. We're
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: gonna hear from sark in this segment his local media scrum,
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: independent of what went down in the media room and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: on the various shows, what went down on this show,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: in his one on one exclusive conversation with Craig yesterday,
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: and what he said in the main press conference on
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: SEC Network. So this is things we've not yet played
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: for you here on the show. Plenty of thoughts from
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Steve Sarkisian in the car wash of media day obligations
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: he had in tamp He gave an update on Cole Hudson.
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: What's the latest?
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Where might he fit on the roster after a judge
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: potentially cleared the way for him here in Travis County
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: is he tries to get a sixth year of eligibility.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: A judge granted Hudson a TROW, a temporary restraining order
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: which allows him to work out with the team, although
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: the Longhorns certainly having some downtime at the moment. His
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: next step is actually a hearing for a temporary injunction,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: which is set for August third, and that, if granted,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: could allow Cole Hudson to continue playing while his case
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: actually goes through court. It's sort of similar to the
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Brendan Sorosby situation, where it might not actually get resolved
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: in time to come to a resolution before the end
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: of the season. So here was Sark's latest on Cole Hudson,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: former Longhorn offensive lineman who is seeking that fifth year
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: of eligibility.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04:57Speaker 15: Well, you know, I think obviously we saw the five
- 1:04:59Speaker 15: for five get passed.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: Cole is any unique.
- 1:05:02Speaker 15: Situation because you know, he didn't get drafted, he didn't
- 1:05:06Speaker 15: get signed by an NFL team, and so you know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 15: I think between he, his family, his attorneys, uh, they
- 1:05:11Speaker 15: wanted to go for this and and you know it
- 1:05:15Speaker 15: was up to them, you know, and they did that.
- 1:05:16Speaker 15: You know, I think for us, you know, if if
- 1:05:18Speaker 15: it ultimately all goes through, we're getting a veteran player, right,
- 1:05:21Speaker 15: We're getting a guy who I think has twenty three
- 1:05:23Speaker 15: career starts and has appeared in forty eight games. You
- 1:05:27Speaker 15: know where that lands as far as you know, what
- 1:05:30Speaker 15: does it look like? And with with Laura Seymour or
- 1:05:32Speaker 15: j Kojo all the bunch of different guys. At the
- 1:05:35Speaker 15: end of the day, there's nothing like having an experienced player,
- 1:05:38Speaker 15: you know, on your team in your locker room, in
- 1:05:41Speaker 15: the offensive line room that.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: You know, what does the future hold.
- 1:05:45Speaker 15: I don't know, I haven't I haven't seen Cole and
- 1:05:47Speaker 15: what it's been seven months, you know, since since the
- 1:05:50Speaker 15: you know, our last time we played. So there's a
- 1:05:52Speaker 15: lot that we have to kind of sort through and unpack.
- 1:05:56Speaker 15: But if we're fortunate to have him back, it'd be great.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: Yeah, key to remember that tro that Cole Hudson got
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: in his favor. The temporary restraining order doesn't mean that
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: he's going to get the injunction, but oftentimes it is
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: the sign that that's coming. So we'll see within the
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: next couple of weeks what happens on that.
- 1:06:13Speaker 11: Again.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: After the NCAA changed its rules in that five for
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: five model back in June, there have been few athletes
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: in different sports who are trying to essentially sue for
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: eligibility because this change doesn't impact them. It doesn't grant
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: them that fifth year. If their eligibility ran out at
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: the end of last season, the new implementation does not
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: grant them an extra year. I mean, this happened and
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: instantaneously several athletes from that high school class of twenty
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: twenty two are saying they were unfairly denied a fifth year. Now,
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: at some point there has to be a cutoff. But
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: at the same time, you understand that these athletes operated
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: under an old rules system and now there's a new
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: one that would have treated their eligibility differently. Steve Sarkejian,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: though asked a big picture question. Here are a couple
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: of bigger picture quotes from sark in this segment, And
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: this first one is about his concern level for college
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: football in general with courts deciding eligibility. And this is
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: obviously a hat tip to some of what's going on
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: around the other programs in the SEC and in Lubbock.
- 1:07:17Speaker 15: Yeah, I've been saying this, you know, I've been I've
- 1:07:19Speaker 15: been saying this.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:07:20Speaker 15: I feel like it's it's we're in an uneasy situation
- 1:07:26Speaker 15: where we can't govern our own rules, and that's not healthy.
- 1:07:33Speaker 15: It's not healthy that we have at minimum thirty nine
- 1:07:36Speaker 15: different state laws that players in different states can go
- 1:07:40Speaker 15: get injunctions or temporary restraining orders and put in place
- 1:07:44Speaker 15: to get around a rule. But now, those are the rules,
- 1:07:49Speaker 15: those are those are the rules of engagement, right and
- 1:07:52Speaker 15: so I don't blame Cole for doing what he did.
- 1:07:54Speaker 15: I don't blame Trendy, dan Chandlin for doing what he did.
- 1:07:58Speaker 15: I think that's the that's those are the rules of
- 1:08:01Speaker 15: engagement right now.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: I think ultimately that's why we.
- 1:08:05Speaker 15: All want some sort of sense of like governance and
- 1:08:10Speaker 15: ability to apply rules. And you know, and I think
- 1:08:14Speaker 15: we're all searching for answers, and we've got really smart
- 1:08:17Speaker 15: people trying to figure this out. And and I have
- 1:08:21Speaker 15: good faith in knowing the leadership that we have at
- 1:08:23Speaker 15: the University of Texas will do that, the leadership that
- 1:08:27Speaker 15: we have in the SEC with Commissioner Sankie will do that,
- 1:08:31Speaker 15: that will ultimately find what's in the best interest for
- 1:08:34Speaker 15: all of us.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: Uh and not just football. It's it's every sport.
- 1:08:38Speaker 15: It's it's women's sports, it's Olympic sports, it's everything involved.
- 1:08:41Speaker 15: And so you know, I think we need to you know,
- 1:08:44Speaker 15: slow down a little bit and just trying to find
- 1:08:46Speaker 15: a quick fix and really look at what's gonna be
- 1:08:49Speaker 15: the best long term and look at the unintended consequences
- 1:08:53Speaker 15: of the next thing we try to do.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:08:56Speaker 15: We we try to act so fast sometimes that we
- 1:08:58Speaker 15: that we missed the unintended consequence.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: What comes from at sarks thoughts on college football courts
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: deciding eligibility and kind of the lack of enforcement around that.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: The other big change in the SEC this year, or
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: the move to a nine game schedule, you've heard coaches
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: around the conference sort of weighing in on how it
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: might impact their team. Obviously making schedules more difficult, perhaps
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: helping the SEC get teams into the College Football Playoff
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: by improving strength of schedule, but perhaps making it more
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: difficult based on the way the committee operated in previous
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: years and not necessarily considering strength of schedule the same way.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: Here was Sark's quick response to being asked about the
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: difficulty of the nine game schedule.
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: I mean, it is what it is.
- 1:09:44Speaker 15: I could sit here and complain about it, or we
- 1:09:47Speaker 15: can get ready to go do it, and that's kind.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: Of been our mindset.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: So it is what it is let's go play And
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: of course there's been lots of talk of expanding the
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: college football Playoff, with Greg sank not on board with
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: the Big Tens twenty fourteen proposal that governered some support
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: at Big twelve media days from brent yor Mark and
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: here were Sarks thoughts on that.
- 1:10:08Speaker 15: I think it was a lot of credit to Commissioner
- 1:10:11Speaker 15: Sanki he pumped the brakes on that, you know, because
- 1:10:14Speaker 15: I think a lot of there was a lot of
- 1:10:15Speaker 15: momentum for that thing to go in that direction, and
- 1:10:18Speaker 15: I think he had the foresight to pump the brakes
- 1:10:20Speaker 15: and to say, let's take a deeper look at this.
- 1:10:22Speaker 15: So let's look at the impact that this may have
- 1:10:25Speaker 15: on a lot of levels.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: And I don't need to get into all of them.
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: You guys have been hearing them all week.
- 1:10:30Speaker 15: But but I credit him for that, and he's you
- 1:10:32Speaker 15: know again, Commissioner Sinki has done a tremendous job. He
- 1:10:34Speaker 15: takes a lot of heat for some of the choices
- 1:10:37Speaker 15: and decisions he's made, and but at the end of
- 1:10:40Speaker 15: the day, I think he has the idea that what's
- 1:10:44Speaker 15: in the best interest of college football, not only what's
- 1:10:47Speaker 15: in the best interest of the Southeastern Conference. That being said,
- 1:10:51Speaker 15: you know, we committed to playing nine conference games with
- 1:10:53Speaker 15: this idea that we were going to expand to sixteen teams.
- 1:10:57Speaker 15: That didn't happen, And instead of just appeasing us and saying, hey,
- 1:11:01Speaker 15: well we can go to sixteen, we're going to go
- 1:11:02Speaker 15: to twenty four. So the coaches feel good about it,
- 1:11:05Speaker 15: he actually is looking at this from a ten thousand
- 1:11:08Speaker 15: foot view to say what's best for the game moving forward.
- 1:11:12Speaker 15: And if we're going to play a nine conference game
- 1:11:14Speaker 15: schedule this year and still only be at a twelve
- 1:11:16Speaker 15: team playoff, then it is what it is, and so well,
- 1:11:19Speaker 15: we better play really good if we want if we want.
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: To get in.
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be a challenge, no doubt about it. Those
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: the thoughts of coach Sark on that. Later in the show,
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: we'll get a few more of Sark's comments to that
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: local media scrum as well as if you in the
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: electronic media room, it's hard to keep track of all
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: the different media availabilities at SEC media.
- 1:11:39Speaker 9: It is.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: We're doing our best to bring you some of the
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: most important things that Sark and his players said in
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Tampa yesterday that we didn't have time to play during
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: that live show that Craig and company had in the afternoon.
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: You know what else we didn't have time for yesterday, Inconceivable, Well,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: on a Florida Man Friday, we'll bring you an edition
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: of Inconceivable today, even if it's a little that's coming
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: up after the break. Our third and final hour of
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: today's show, Our third and final hour of this week
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: on the program. Jay Kerbman here building in for Craig Way.
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: Glad to have you with us on AM thirteen hundred
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: zone and on the iHeartRadio app. We're continuing to discuss
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: sec media days. If you're just joining us. We did
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: already break down Lebron James' new destination. He'll be a
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: Philadelphia seventy six er next season, and we broke that
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: down with Mark Henry who called it on the show
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: three weeks ago, and that is available wherever you get
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: your podcasts as soon as this show is over. And
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: we continue to hear from a head coach Deeve Sarkisian
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: this segment, we'll focus on his comments on the offensive
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: side of the football, starting here with arch Manning's accuracy
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: and one thing that the athletics article pointed out, which
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: I hope some holes in on the show Wednesday afternoon
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: ranking arch Manning the seventh best quarterback in the country.
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: And it's you know, it's a preseason ranking, right you
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: don't want to be up at arms and overreacting to it.
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: But they pointed out the accuracy on the short throws
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: that folks around the sport think arch Manning could improve.
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: Sark was asked about this, not specific to that article,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: but on the issue of arch Manning's accuracy, talking about
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: the reporter made a basketball metaphor. Arch has hit him
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: three pointer type throws, but can he improve in the
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: mid range?
- 1:13:31Speaker 15: I think he needed to finish a little better around
- 1:13:33Speaker 15: the rim, you know, I like anything, you know, there
- 1:13:38Speaker 15: was an evolution for him, I think. I think at
- 1:13:42Speaker 15: the end of the day, you know, if you think
- 1:13:43Speaker 15: about passing the football, that's really an assist, it's not
- 1:13:46Speaker 15: really shooting. And I think we needed to finish better
- 1:13:49Speaker 15: for him too.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: With the ball.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: You know we did.
- 1:13:51Speaker 15: We had you know, way too many drops, which what
- 1:13:54Speaker 15: we're accustomed to. All that all that pours into a
- 1:13:57Speaker 15: completion percentage, you know, the quarterbacks accuracy, see the types
- 1:14:00Speaker 15: of play calls, the ability to catch the ball. So
- 1:14:04Speaker 15: I think all those things, you know, I think naturally
- 1:14:06Speaker 15: we saw an uptick as the year went on. We
- 1:14:09Speaker 15: got better at all three of those things, and I
- 1:14:11Speaker 15: think we've improved that throughout spring and throughout this summer.
- 1:14:15Speaker 15: I think Arch is throwing really accurately, accurately right now.
- 1:14:18Speaker 15: He's worked on some things mechanically. I think we've surrounded
- 1:14:21Speaker 15: him with some really good pass catchers that are doing
- 1:14:23Speaker 15: a nice job. And I think that we're evolving offensively
- 1:14:26Speaker 15: to where, Okay, we know what some of his strengths
- 1:14:29Speaker 15: were last year, but also Samarius where we felt like, man,
- 1:14:32Speaker 15: we need to improve upon this to become even better.
- 1:14:34Speaker 15: And I give him a lot of credit for doing that.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: And amidst some of those growing pains. Early last year,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Arch Manning was the subject of a lot of criticism
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: and Sark was asked, what does it show about Arch
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: and his character to be able to block that out
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: and improve and not complain about it.
- 1:14:51Speaker 15: Well, I think that's what a real guy does, and
- 1:14:53Speaker 15: Arch Manning is a real guy. You know, before the season,
- 1:14:56Speaker 15: Arch Manning wasn't going around posting on so social media.
- 1:15:00Speaker 15: I'm going to be the first pick of the draft.
- 1:15:02Speaker 15: He wasn't posting on social media, I'm going to be
- 1:15:04Speaker 15: the Heisman Trophy winner. He quite frankly went under the
- 1:15:08Speaker 15: raidar and just worked really hard and tried to be
- 1:15:10Speaker 15: the best player and the best teammate he could be.
- 1:15:13Speaker 15: Then he doesn't play great, and we don't play great,
- 1:15:16Speaker 15: and he takes, in my opinion, some real tough criticism
- 1:15:22Speaker 15: and some would say disrespectful criticism. But he didn't go
- 1:15:27Speaker 15: complain about it. He didn't go on some rant on
- 1:15:29Speaker 15: social media.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: What did he do? He kept working really hard. What
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: did his teammates do?
- 1:15:34Speaker 15: They supported him, And the byproduct of hard work and
- 1:15:38Speaker 15: being on a team that supports you and loves you,
- 1:15:40Speaker 15: you get on the.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: Other side of that adversity.
- 1:15:42Speaker 15: And now he can do the same for the next guys.
- 1:15:44Speaker 15: And so I just think that that's what a real
- 1:15:47Speaker 15: guy does and who that's what arch Manning is.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: And some strong praise there from Steve Sarkisian. We're listening
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: to some of his sound bites from a media scrum,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: so to speak, with the local media who assembled before
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: he even ends the media room in tam But plenty
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: of chances for sark to field all kinds of questions
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: over this past week, and one of those that he
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: got was about the backfield split, how he sees that
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: potentially developing, and not just Hollywood's mothers and Ralli Brown,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: but could freshman Derek Cooper even factor in.
- 1:16:21Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, we didn't bring Raleik in Hollywood here
- 1:16:24Speaker 15: to one of them to be a backup. You know,
- 1:16:25Speaker 15: they're both gonna play. They're both gonna play a lot
- 1:16:27Speaker 15: of football for us. We love their skill sets. We
- 1:16:30Speaker 15: think they fit exactly what we're trying to accomplish in
- 1:16:34Speaker 15: the run game and where we're trying to go with
- 1:16:35Speaker 15: ourselves as an offensive football team, being more explosive, you know,
- 1:16:40Speaker 15: being more productive on a consistent basis in the run
- 1:16:43Speaker 15: game of utilizing them out of the backfield. Derek's had
- 1:16:46Speaker 15: at a great start to his career winter conditioning, spring ball, summer.
- 1:16:51Speaker 15: You know, we got a long way to go. He's
- 1:16:52Speaker 15: a true freshman. He's never you know, jogged out of
- 1:16:55Speaker 15: the tunnel the front one hundred and five thousand people either.
- 1:16:57Speaker 15: So we got a ways to go. But we're fortunate.
- 1:17:00Speaker 15: You know, Ryan Niblet's there. You know, Michael Terry, I
- 1:17:03Speaker 15: thought made a lot of progress last year and through
- 1:17:05Speaker 15: the Bowl prep and through spring practice, and James Simon,
- 1:17:09Speaker 15: as we know, showed some natural running ability as a
- 1:17:11Speaker 15: true freshman.
- 1:17:12Speaker 2: So we think it's a strong room.
- 1:17:14Speaker 15: That that, you know, with that room and some of
- 1:17:17Speaker 15: the other moves we made that that run game can
- 1:17:19Speaker 15: be as productive as we wanted to be.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and some of the moves in that backfield involved
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: losing a couple of guys via the transfer portal. One
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: of those was Parker Livingston in the wide receiver room.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: But of course the departures as well of guys like
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Christian Clark who left obviously in the middle. I'm sorry,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: guys like Christian Clark, Trey Weisner, and C. J. Baxter
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: who were in last year's backfield who are the longer
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: a part of the team. And one of those former guys,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: Parker Livingston, will face Texas this season in the Red
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: River Game. This clip has been blowing up on social
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: media since Sark said it about this time yesterday. His
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: thoughts on facing Livingston when Texas plays Oklahoma.
- 1:17:59Speaker 9: Park Livingston going from Texas to Oklahoma, what's it going
- 1:18:02Speaker 9: to be like to see him on the sidelines on
- 1:18:04Speaker 9: the opposite side of the red River game.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: I mean, I hope we kick his ass. It's the
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: red River rivalry, you know what I mean.
- 1:18:11Speaker 11: He chose to go there.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: He's on the other side.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: It's the way the game goes.
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: If you've ever been, it's a hell of a game.
- 1:18:16Speaker 15: It's an epic, you know, pulling into the Cotton Bowl,
- 1:18:21Speaker 15: the State Fair, the corn Dogs, the Turkey Legs, you know,
- 1:18:26Speaker 15: split down the middle of the fifty yard line, both
- 1:18:28Speaker 15: teams of the same tunnel. Like at the end of
- 1:18:31Speaker 15: the day, like it's competition, you know, after the game,
- 1:18:34Speaker 15: I'm sure I'll get him a big hug. Before that,
- 1:18:36Speaker 15: we're trying to beat his ass. That's the way it goes.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: It's pretty blunt from coach Sark when it comes to
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: Parker Livingston. And look, I think he says that out
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: of respect for the type of rivalry game that this is.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: Parker Livingston posted this afternoon on x just the quote.
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: Don't doubt me.
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: Now, wide receivers have a unique way with words on
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: social media. But there's lots of extra fuel going into
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: the fire on this, and we've seen lots of programs
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: media members from Longhorn Rivals kind of taking Sarks comments
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: as bulletin board material when he talks about some of
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: the ways that Texas had to make some moves to
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: quote create cap space and bring in some of the
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: guys that are going to be on this twenty twenty
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: six roster and let talented guys like DeAndre Moore and
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: Parker livingsit in the wide receiver room, just to name
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: a couple of examples.
- 1:19:31Speaker 16: Go.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: So we're going to talk about that and more reactions
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: from SEC Media Days with Evan Veeth from Inside Texas.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: He's a busy man today.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: He'll join us now and he'll join Bucky in BK
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: during their show following the conclusion of the program tonight.
- 1:19:47Speaker 11: They're with you from five to seven.
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: We're with you up until five o'clock here on AM
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: thirteen hundred Zone and the Free iHeartRadio App. Quarter past
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: four o'clock on this Friday afternoon. I'm glad you're joining
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: us on AM thirteen hundred, the Zone and the Free
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: iHeartRadio App. We continue to break down all things SEC
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Media Days and all things Longhorns as they pertain to it.
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: I want to let you hear a couple more soundbites
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: from Steve Sarkejian first one on the overall health of
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: his roster at the moment, a big topic given some
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: of the guys who had to miss time in the
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: spring with various injuries. He was asked specifically about just
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: As Terry in this question, but his thoughts on the
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: roster help as a whole.
- 1:20:34Speaker 15: Again, I don't know of anybody that won't be cleared
- 1:20:38Speaker 15: and ready to go come training camp in a week
- 1:20:40Speaker 15: and a half or two weeks, I guess from today.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: So that's encouraging.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: You know.
- 1:20:45Speaker 15: Now we're going to monitor guys. Bobby is like anything
- 1:20:48Speaker 15: when we get to training camp. I mean, you know
- 1:20:51Speaker 15: of you know how much pounding or how much running
- 1:20:54Speaker 15: certain guys are doing. And again it's it's we have
- 1:20:57Speaker 15: to kind of build towards the season. But I I
- 1:21:00Speaker 15: don't see anybody that's gonna say he's necessarily out. We
- 1:21:03Speaker 15: know Cadence Shear is going to be obviously with the
- 1:21:05Speaker 15: ACL but outside of that, I think we're gonna have
- 1:21:08Speaker 15: a full roster ready to go. Knock on wood, we
- 1:21:11Speaker 15: get through the next week and a half to get
- 1:21:12Speaker 15: ready for camp.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: Big talking point of Steve Sarkisian and some of the
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: other long worn players who were present at media days.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: Is that of this roster as a whole being the
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: most talented that Sark has had at Texas. You can
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: hear him talk about it with some confidence. Here's his
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: answer on that question in the local media meetup.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: Well, I think we have a talented roster.
- 1:21:34Speaker 15: I think time will tell as the season comes and
- 1:21:38Speaker 15: as we play. And you know, as I said, knock
- 1:21:40Speaker 15: on wood, you know we don't have, you know, injuries
- 1:21:43Speaker 15: at certain spots. You know, you're always deeper at some
- 1:21:45Speaker 15: spots than others. But I like our team, you know,
- 1:21:48Speaker 15: I like the depth.
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: I like that.
- 1:21:50Speaker 15: I think we're a very versatile team. I don't think
- 1:21:52Speaker 15: we're imbalanced on offense or defense or in one area.
- 1:21:56Speaker 15: I think I think we're really good. We're gonna have
- 1:21:57Speaker 15: a good offensive football team. You're a good defensive football team.
- 1:22:00Speaker 15: I think we're going to be well equipped to play
- 1:22:02Speaker 15: well on special teams. But those things have to come
- 1:22:05Speaker 15: to life, you know, you know, talent gets you so far.
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: It's me you have to play the game.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: Still trying to get connected here with our guest, Evan VV,
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: who's coming up later on in this segment.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: But while we sort that through.
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: We continue to hear from Steve Sarkisian his comments with
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: the local media in Tampa. And this is a question
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: actually from Evan, our friend from inside Texas on a
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: follow up something Sarks said at the Texas High School
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: Coaches Convention and Coaching School and that is the comparison
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: he made. Now you'll hear sark kind of set the
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: record straight on this, but the comparison he made of
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: what Jermaine Bishop is doing to the potential ceiling of
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: a Devonte Smith.
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: Here was that answer.
- 1:22:47Speaker 15: Well, twenty twenty, DeVante Smith was a fourth year senior
- 1:22:51Speaker 15: when the Heisman Trophy had over two thousand yards receiving.
- 1:22:54Speaker 15: Jermaine Bishop hasn't put on our uniform yet, so we
- 1:22:56Speaker 15: got a long way to go. The comparison was about
- 1:23:00Speaker 15: both guys cross training that Davante at his time at
- 1:23:04Speaker 15: Alabama cross train while he was a receiver, he would
- 1:23:07Speaker 15: also work on dB and corner play in case we
- 1:23:10Speaker 15: had an emergency at corner and so that's that's where
- 1:23:13Speaker 15: the comparison came. He's got a long way to go
- 1:23:15Speaker 15: to where I referenced Davante Smith and Jermaine Bishop is
- 1:23:18Speaker 15: you know, comparable. We'll find out, hopefully. Hopefully, let's play.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: On perfect segue to the reporter who asked that question,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: our good friend Evan Veith, who was busy all week
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: at SEC media Days in Tampa.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Are you are you back here in the lone Star State?
- 1:23:33Speaker 4: Now?
- 1:23:34Speaker 2: I am, you know, Jake, Yes, I'm back in Austin.
- 1:23:37Speaker 16: It's unfortunate that's the one that came up before, because
- 1:23:39Speaker 16: I was trying to get him to talk about you know,
- 1:23:41Speaker 16: is this is this Texas roster or the offense getting
- 1:23:44Speaker 16: closer to that Alabama look? And then you know, I was,
- 1:23:47Speaker 16: I was at that press commersary, brought up Bishop. I
- 1:23:50Speaker 16: knew he wasn't saying he was going to be Von
- 1:23:51Speaker 16: Smith your one, but yeah, he thought I was trying
- 1:23:53Speaker 16: to insinuate that kind of level of play. But no, yeah,
- 1:23:56Speaker 16: I mean I'm back home and yeah, no, not quite
- 1:23:58Speaker 16: a highsman season for Bishop.
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: I think he's gonna be pretty good.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Well, look, there's people, there's aggregators all over the media
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: that takes Sark out of context almost weekly. So we'll
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: give him one free pass, even if it came at
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: your expense. They're taking you out of context a little bit.
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: During that question, Evan V from Inside Texas joins us,
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: what was your favorite part of the Media Days experience
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: this time around?
- 1:24:21Speaker 16: So I only got to go to that final day.
- 1:24:23Speaker 16: We just were mainly there for the Texas guys. But
- 1:24:25Speaker 16: you know, the first thing I ended up doing was
- 1:24:27Speaker 16: was that early morning lsu press. I think it started
- 1:24:30Speaker 16: at nine, and my first experience in media is my
- 1:24:32Speaker 16: first time ever going was Lanekiffin talking for eighteen minutes
- 1:24:36Speaker 16: of his thirty allotted in a filibuster of his obany
- 1:24:38Speaker 16: statement because he did not want to talk to the media,
- 1:24:41Speaker 16: and the only ended up answering four questions. And you know,
- 1:24:44Speaker 16: in that filibuster included a ton of random statements, and
- 1:24:48Speaker 16: then one of his answers was about how Hulk Hogan
- 1:24:50Speaker 16: showed him the importance of like mortality.
- 1:24:53Speaker 2: Another one was just from an Auburn report.
- 1:24:55Speaker 16: You know, this is exactly what Lanekiffin is and it
- 1:24:57Speaker 16: was pretty funny just to see.
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: It in person like that.
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: A couple of DC guys like us know a thing
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: or two about the filibuster, and that's certainly exactly what
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: Lane did. I saw someone comparing that word count to
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: Mike Leech's five word opening statement from four years ago
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: rested peace to coach Leech. That is somebody that was
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: certainly missed this weekend in Tampa. We also got some
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: breaking news during Stars press conference. Five star cornerback John
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Meredith third is reclassifying is joining the long Goorns roster
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: this season.
- 1:25:26Speaker 2: What do you think this news might mean, Evan for
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: the Texas defense.
- 1:25:29Speaker 16: I think it means a little bit more for twenty
- 1:25:31Speaker 16: twenty seven than it might for twenty twenty six, just
- 1:25:33Speaker 16: because you know, I think part of what Meredith is
- 1:25:35Speaker 16: going to be busy doing and to end.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: The summer is finishing his classes.
- 1:25:39Speaker 16: Because what he's doing is making sure that he's able
- 1:25:41Speaker 16: to finish with his district to get his degree in
- 1:25:43Speaker 16: high school, to that enroll a year early. And it
- 1:25:45Speaker 16: wasn't like this was you know, some of these players,
- 1:25:47Speaker 16: it's a big time, long term plan to do this.
- 1:25:50Speaker 16: But Meredith, because of his eligibility problems it is at
- 1:25:52Speaker 16: North Crowley like, he kind of pivoted that way and
- 1:25:55Speaker 16: it worked out well. The Texas staff, his district staff
- 1:25:58Speaker 16: have done a great job of making sure that's able
- 1:26:00Speaker 16: to happen.
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: But I think it more means that it's going to
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: be a slow fall.
- 1:26:04Speaker 16: For him, because you know, how can you expect him
- 1:26:05Speaker 16: to play in those first two to three games as
- 1:26:07Speaker 16: he's really just learning the playbook of this roster and
- 1:26:10Speaker 16: they've got a lot of good cornerbacks on the team.
- 1:26:11Speaker 16: Even had the luxurer to kind of moving Kobe Black
- 1:26:14Speaker 16: to more of a safety role because of the talent there.
- 1:26:16Speaker 16: So I don't think it means much this year. He
- 1:26:18Speaker 16: might get a few snaps here there, but I think
- 1:26:20Speaker 16: it does mean that this was already a guy we
- 1:26:22Speaker 16: were discussing of in twenty twenty seven. Could he just
- 1:26:24Speaker 16: pull grace in Littleton and be starting right away as
- 1:26:27Speaker 16: a true freshman? Now, I mean that has catalyzed way
- 1:26:30Speaker 16: more now that he's gonna be on campus for a
- 1:26:31Speaker 16: full year, actually getting to know Mark orfe At the
- 1:26:34Speaker 16: cornerback coach, getting.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: To know the Will mus Champs scheme.
- 1:26:36Speaker 16: I mean, this might be a guy who is starting
- 1:26:38Speaker 16: week one next year just because well he's got a
- 1:26:40Speaker 16: little bit of a leg up on some of the
- 1:26:41Speaker 16: competition that we didn't expect him to have. He's a
- 1:26:43Speaker 16: really talented pressman cornerback. You know, Will must Champ loves
- 1:26:47Speaker 16: those kind of players, so I keep more of an
- 1:26:49Speaker 16: eye out for how that looks next.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: Offseason and what he can do in twenty twenty seven.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I was telling some friends who were asking, is
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: he going to step in right away? Is he going
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: to get some snaps? And my answer was I almost
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: hope not. But is is that a silly way to think?
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: Knowing just how talented this kid is and what the
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: ceiling is that comes with it.
- 1:27:08Speaker 16: It would probably mean that injuries have happened, and that
- 1:27:10Speaker 16: doesn't mean that he couldn't go do it.
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: You know, he is eighteen.
- 1:27:12Speaker 16: It's not like they're bringing in a player who is
- 1:27:14Speaker 16: a true you know, about to be senior in high
- 1:27:16Speaker 16: school and not really ready for that kind of level
- 1:27:19Speaker 16: of physicality. And he was the number two cornerback, number
- 1:27:21Speaker 16: five player I believe in the twenty twenty six class
- 1:27:24Speaker 16: or twenty twenty seven class now reclassified for a reason.
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: But it probably means that you've gotten pretty deep in
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: your well.
- 1:27:29Speaker 16: If you've got your three starting cornerbacks, there's a multitude
- 1:27:32Speaker 16: of guys who can play at the nickel.
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: There's Warren Roberson, Smarty Matthews in this class, so.
- 1:27:36Speaker 16: It probably means you've got about three injuries in the
- 1:27:37Speaker 16: cornerback room if he's got to be playing, so I'd
- 1:27:39Speaker 16: be wary of him really needing actual snaps this year.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Evan V from Inside Texas is with us about this
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: time yesterday, Arch Manning was speaking with the media and
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: we aired a one on one conversation he had with
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: Craig way here during the time slot yesterday, and he
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: told Craig that he had a lot more fun this
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: year at media Days. He maybe came in dreading it
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: a little bit and left with a better mindset. Some
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: of that came from, you know, coach's parents, teammates, things
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: like that. Did you pick up on that version of
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Arch being a little different this time around?
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I did feel.
- 1:28:13Speaker 16: You know, there are two different levels of confidence that
- 1:28:15Speaker 16: have shown from Arch Manning in these two offseasons. I
- 1:28:17Speaker 16: think last year was kind of a youthful, cocky confidence
- 1:28:21Speaker 16: in a way that like, you know, I'm Arch Manning,
- 1:28:23Speaker 16: I'm starting now, I'm ready to go, which there's nothing
- 1:28:25Speaker 16: wrong with that, but I think now it feels like
- 1:28:27Speaker 16: more of a man. I just went through a tough
- 1:28:29Speaker 16: year and I'm past that, and we've really built a
- 1:28:32Speaker 16: roster that's going to allow me to succeed in twenty
- 1:28:35Speaker 16: twenty six and now were interesting, like, yeah, I've earned
- 1:28:38Speaker 16: my stripes a little bit, I've gone through the tough
- 1:28:40Speaker 16: parts of football, and now it's just about kind of
- 1:28:42Speaker 16: having fun and letting a team that's really good around
- 1:28:45Speaker 16: me playing to my strengths. And of course it helps
- 1:28:47Speaker 16: when you're coming with It's Colin Simmons and Trevor Gooseby.
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: Gooseby from his class, who's his blind cyberrotector.
- 1:28:51Speaker 16: Cam Coleman's getting voted All SEC first team right there
- 1:28:55Speaker 16: during the day. So I did feel like in a
- 1:28:57Speaker 16: way that that arch just seemed a little happy year like,
- 1:29:00Speaker 16: not to psychoanalyze the guy, but he just seemed to
- 1:29:03Speaker 16: have a smile on his face a lot, seem to
- 1:29:04Speaker 16: be embracing the chaos of what happens when he comes
- 1:29:07Speaker 16: to the stand. I don't know if people see my
- 1:29:09Speaker 16: tweet about it, but you know, he's the most popular
- 1:29:11Speaker 16: guy in college football, and you can see it with
- 1:29:13Speaker 16: the media scrum just huddling around him about six rows.
- 1:29:16Speaker 2: Deep were the bodies of reporters.
- 1:29:17Speaker 16: But he didn't seem phased by it the way he
- 1:29:19Speaker 16: might have done earlier last year when he was really struggling,
- 1:29:22Speaker 16: and we even had him kind of answer our questions saying,
- 1:29:24Speaker 16: you know, hey, when did you start having fun last year?
- 1:29:26Speaker 16: He goes, and we started winning, which that was about
- 1:29:28Speaker 16: six weeks into the season, Jake. So that's where you
- 1:29:31Speaker 16: can see the difference and how his mental is coming
- 1:29:33Speaker 16: into the year.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: Yeah, we played that SoundBite a little earlier in the
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: show and last segment we heard Sark's comments about Parker
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: Livingston say they want to kick his tail in the
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: Red River game, and he also kind of expanded later
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: on in that availability about some of the guys that
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: departed the program in the off season, that they had
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: to let guys leave to quote create cap space. What
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: are your thoughts on the way Sark kind of handled
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: this issue when it was brought up, and maybe the
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: reactions that it it's getting on x and other media
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: outlets today, Well, I was.
- 1:30:04Speaker 16: Just gonna say, I think the reactions are so funny
- 1:30:06Speaker 16: to me because this is not the first time he
- 1:30:07Speaker 16: said this right, Like this was these were headlines that
- 1:30:09Speaker 16: were coming around in January and February and into the spring.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: When we were.
- 1:30:13Speaker 16: Talking to him about the transportal class he said, like
- 1:30:16Speaker 16: I had to make some tough decisions about DeAndre Moore.
- 1:30:19Speaker 16: You know, he ended up kind of posting some emoji
- 1:30:21Speaker 16: reactions on Twitter and CJ. Baxter and Trey Wiser like
- 1:30:24Speaker 16: this isn't the first time he said we had to
- 1:30:27Speaker 16: get rid of these players, and get rid of might
- 1:30:28Speaker 16: be harsh. Cut it sounds harsh as well, but it's frankly,
- 1:30:31Speaker 16: what it is is, we're not going.
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: To give you a raise.
- 1:30:33Speaker 16: I know you think you need a little bit more
- 1:30:34Speaker 16: money here, but we're not going to adhere to that.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: If you want to stay and compete, then that's fine.
- 1:30:38Speaker 16: But if there's a place of offering you more money
- 1:30:41Speaker 16: for a better opportunity, go get it. We're not going
- 1:30:43Speaker 16: to stop you from doing that. And that's just the
- 1:30:45Speaker 16: modern date reality of college football. Players want this to
- 1:30:48Speaker 16: be a business where they're making seven figures and overall
- 1:30:51Speaker 16: getting into that two to six million dollar paychecks here,
- 1:30:55Speaker 16: they have to realize that some other guys are going
- 1:30:57Speaker 16: to get paid and if a team doesn't feel like
- 1:30:58Speaker 16: you are the writing investment at your spot, they will
- 1:31:01Speaker 16: pick over you. So, you know, there was a lot
- 1:31:04Speaker 16: of outrage about the cap space comment, and every coach
- 1:31:07Speaker 16: is doing this.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: You know, it's a different level with certain things.
- 1:31:09Speaker 16: Sometimes it's at the G six level, where you know,
- 1:31:11Speaker 16: if your quarterback's one of the best in the country
- 1:31:14Speaker 16: when he was playing at you know, Texas State, which
- 1:31:16Speaker 16: is a bad example because Brad Jackson did stay. But
- 1:31:18Speaker 16: a guy like Jackson could have gone for a higher
- 1:31:20Speaker 16: paycheck somewhere else. And what's Gjken can you gonna do?
- 1:31:23Speaker 16: He doesn't have the salary cap to match that most
- 1:31:25Speaker 16: of the time. So it happens everywhere. It's just that
- 1:31:27Speaker 16: starts very vocal about it. He's very vocal about how
- 1:31:30Speaker 16: he operated the transfer portal. And then the day, Jake,
- 1:31:33Speaker 16: are you upset that they turned the money that DeAndre
- 1:31:36Speaker 16: Moore and Parker Livingston were making into cam coleman Or
- 1:31:39Speaker 16: you've set that the two running backs have been traded
- 1:31:40Speaker 16: out for two more explosive running backs. You've set that
- 1:31:43Speaker 16: they added Rashim Biles and bow Mascow. It felt like
- 1:31:46Speaker 16: good moves at the time, and it still feels like
- 1:31:47Speaker 16: even better moves as it's aged longer.
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I think providing potential bulletin board material has to
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: be low on a list in the in the C suite.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Over there on campus as to how these dissions are
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: being made in how they operate. Obviously, a national championship
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: and an SEC Championship are at the top of the list.
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: I want to get your thoughts now on the predicted
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: order of finish that you and your media colleagues use
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: that term pretty loosely voted on in the SEC media
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: days in Tampa. Surprise to see Georgia at number one,
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: in Texas just behind them at number two.
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: No surprise at the very top.
- 1:32:25Speaker 16: I think a lot of people that I've talked to
- 1:32:28Speaker 16: have shared this sentiment that George is probably the best
- 1:32:30Speaker 16: equipped to go out and win the SEC Championship.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: But we're talking about national title.
- 1:32:34Speaker 16: That's where I'd probably give Texas to the edge, and
- 1:32:36Speaker 16: that's just the result of how these rosters are built
- 1:32:38Speaker 16: as schedules that they play. I think Texas has a
- 1:32:40Speaker 16: harder schedule in Georgia pretty clearly.
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: So the Bulldogs keep doing it. They've won the past.
- 1:32:46Speaker 16: However, many that have come around and really only feels
- 1:32:49Speaker 16: like Alabama is a team that gives them problems. So
- 1:32:51Speaker 16: I would not be surprised if George is the team
- 1:32:53Speaker 16: that wins the SEC. But Texas goes farther than the CFP.
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: Alabama's down at number six. You brought them up first
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: time since the pre Sabin era they've picked to finish
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: that low in the conference. Is that position maybe justified
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: for you?
- 1:33:07Speaker 16: I felt that four through seven were very interchangeable, and
- 1:33:10Speaker 16: me personally, I would have had ole Miss in that
- 1:33:12Speaker 16: tier as well. But I think gave will Miss the
- 1:33:14Speaker 16: edge and I will find about this on Twitter. Is
- 1:33:17Speaker 16: it feels like the top three teams, you can pick
- 1:33:18Speaker 16: a superlative that really fits why they are in that
- 1:33:21Speaker 16: top spot.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: Georgia. It's not hard to explain why Kirby.
- 1:33:24Speaker 16: Smart's teams are gonna be number one Texas the investment,
- 1:33:27Speaker 16: the talent, the star players, and ole Miss. At the
- 1:33:29Speaker 16: end of the day, they have a defensive coach and
- 1:33:31Speaker 16: also the best quarterback and running back in the SEC
- 1:33:34Speaker 16: and maybe even in college football. Off of a long
- 1:33:37Speaker 16: CFP rob like they were going to be top three,
- 1:33:39Speaker 16: but that four through seven tier, it could have gone
- 1:33:41Speaker 16: anyway because it's all teams that play a tough schedules,
- 1:33:43Speaker 16: all teams that have good but questions about them, especially
- 1:33:47Speaker 16: like Jake. The quarterback spot really lights up here for me,
- 1:33:50Speaker 16: I think all these coaches are good at a baseline level,
- 1:33:53Speaker 16: and probably you know Kiffin and Elco Debora especially, and
- 1:33:56Speaker 16: not to throw venables under the bus here, but really
- 1:33:58Speaker 16: really high level, maxim.
- 1:34:00Speaker 2: But every single quarterback position here has some question marks.
- 1:34:03Speaker 16: Right Alabama redshirt freshman starting quarterback and Kielan Russell, how
- 1:34:07Speaker 16: good can he be? Sam Levitt was not representing LSU
- 1:34:10Speaker 16: at media days, and he's going to be a starter,
- 1:34:11Speaker 16: but injury concerns he hasn't really pieced to you that
- 1:34:14Speaker 16: are full season of a really good, amazing.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: Accurate college football as a quarterback.
- 1:34:19Speaker 16: Arizona State that that year they played Texas was the closest,
- 1:34:22Speaker 16: and then A and M and Oklahoma. They've had these
- 1:34:24Speaker 16: starters now for two two and a half years, and
- 1:34:26Speaker 16: you're talking about A and M, but haven't truly been
- 1:34:29Speaker 16: these force multiplier bring the team ahead of where the.
- 1:34:32Speaker 4: Rest of the roster is kind of players.
- 1:34:33Speaker 16: So I would bet that whoever has the best quarterback
- 1:34:36Speaker 16: of this tier probably breaks into that three four spot.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: That's a tier you're discussing with Texas aem for LSU five,
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: Alabama six, and Oklahoma seven for those of us on
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: thirteen hundred the zone. Of course, you can also join
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: us on x and Facebook and YouTube every day for
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: the show where we've got these rankings projected up for you.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: I'm with you on a tier break though, between seven
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: and eight Oklahoma down to Tennessee. I'm not as high
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: on the balls this season in general. Is there any
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: team eight through sixteen that you feel as though is
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: ranked too low and might have the best chance to
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: catapult up into that tier we just discussed.
- 1:35:11Speaker 16: You know, it's not too far below, but I would
- 1:35:13Speaker 16: have put Florida above Tennessee, and that might be a
- 1:35:16Speaker 16: hot take given that Tennessee's got a little bit more establishment.
- 1:35:19Speaker 16: But you know, these quarterbacks are going to be good
- 1:35:21Speaker 16: no matter who gets taken as Josh Aipel's guy like that,
- 1:35:24Speaker 16: he's not going to have a bad offense, but just
- 1:35:26Speaker 16: not really bought into the team that they built this year.
- 1:35:28Speaker 16: I don't think that they're going to completely maximize what
- 1:35:31Speaker 16: this player in year one of starting is going to be,
- 1:35:33Speaker 16: and they play some really tough games. I have them there,
- 1:35:36Speaker 16: and it's hard once you get to that ten, eleven,
- 1:35:39Speaker 16: twelve through sixteen, because it does feel like they're in
- 1:35:43Speaker 16: the right spots right like I wouldn't say yes, Vanderbilt
- 1:35:46Speaker 16: with whoever they pick us for sure above Auburn, or
- 1:35:48Speaker 16: that Auburn should be breaking ahead of Missouri. So I'm
- 1:35:50Speaker 16: not sure there's one where I'm going yes, they will
- 1:35:52Speaker 16: definitely be there. I will say that of all those teams,
- 1:35:55Speaker 16: I think South Carolina has the clearest chance. Of everything
- 1:35:58Speaker 16: goes right, they will be in that top six where
- 1:36:01Speaker 16: I don't know if everything goes right with Kentucky.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: Or Vanderbilt, they will be in that spot.
- 1:36:05Speaker 16: Lenora Sellers is back to the kind of theoretical Lenora
- 1:36:07Speaker 16: Sellers we've heard about. If the wide receivers are really
- 1:36:10Speaker 16: really good, they ended the year well. But if Harbor
- 1:36:13Speaker 16: and Sellers can really take up a tier, I think
- 1:36:16Speaker 16: they could be a very good team. And that seats
- 1:36:18Speaker 16: hot for Shane Beamer. So if he plays well, you
- 1:36:20Speaker 16: know too, it's to save his job more than anything.
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's kind of gone up and down and
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: up and down for Beamer at South Carolina. We're talking
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: SEC media days, polls, preseason All SEC rankings, and teams
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: with Evan Veief from Inside Texas. We're looking now at
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: the All SEC first Team a few Longhorns represented Cam
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: Coleman at the wide receiver spot, Trevor Goosby on the
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: O line, Colin Simmons on the defensive line, and Rashim
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: Biles at one of those linebacker spots. We ran through
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: the whole teams and told you about all the Longhorns
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: who are represented earlier on in the program. What was
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: your reaction to this? Did you break from the consensus
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: on anything that we can see here?
- 1:37:05Speaker 16: You know, one of my big quips with with how
- 1:37:07Speaker 16: these things work, and I tried my best to avoid
- 1:37:10Speaker 16: it as I could, but they don't really ask me
- 1:37:13Speaker 16: to rank it in a football sense, like like the
- 1:37:15Speaker 16: tiering for the D line is just rank your twelve
- 1:37:18Speaker 16: best defensive line and not who is your first team,
- 1:37:20Speaker 16: who's your second team?
- 1:37:21Speaker 2: Is your third team?
- 1:37:22Speaker 16: So you don't really get to calculate out a team.
- 1:37:25Speaker 16: You just get to name players. So you see, like
- 1:37:28Speaker 16: this is three edge rushers. This D line would not
- 1:37:30Speaker 16: actually look all that great because Will Eccles is kind of.
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: Only tackled anchor.
- 1:37:34Speaker 16: You're not seeing any guards on the O line tier, right,
- 1:37:36Speaker 16: It's all these tackles in the center. So that's where
- 1:37:39Speaker 16: I tried my best you know, I had Patrick Coutis,
- 1:37:41Speaker 16: who's the ole Miss guard higher there, and on my
- 1:37:44Speaker 16: d line, I had David Stone on my first team,
- 1:37:46Speaker 16: I believe, you know, at linebacker, I thought Kip Lewis
- 1:37:48Speaker 16: was should have been ahead of Whip Meeks.
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: That's the guy I noticed.
- 1:37:51Speaker 16: Myself as I was looking back, I'm like, wow, I
- 1:37:53Speaker 16: am way higher on Oklahoma than a lot of people
- 1:37:56Speaker 16: in Oklahoma.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: They're in my three to four tier team.
- 1:37:59Speaker 16: I think they are the of those teams we were
- 1:38:00Speaker 16: talking about in that four through seven tier. Like I
- 1:38:03Speaker 16: think that you could have had Isaiah Satanna there over
- 1:38:05Speaker 16: Ryan Coleman Williams, who, like, let's be honest about what
- 1:38:08Speaker 16: Ryan Coleman Williams was last year.
- 1:38:09Speaker 2: He was getting benched on his team like that.
- 1:38:12Speaker 16: They had low Zerra Brooks playing more at the end
- 1:38:14Speaker 16: of the season and getting more targets. And I do
- 1:38:16Speaker 16: think Coleman Williams will be good this year. But that's
- 1:38:18Speaker 16: the thing to keep an eye out. So some things
- 1:38:20Speaker 16: about Garden d tackle those individual spots.
- 1:38:24Speaker 11: dB.
- 1:38:24Speaker 16: I believe I had Kelly Jones as a cornerback over
- 1:38:27Speaker 16: Ellis Robinson, the six to four player at Misissippi State.
- 1:38:30Speaker 16: Absolutely lotched down players outside of cam Coleman, and then
- 1:38:33Speaker 16: I had Jade and boh at running back over Amad Hardy,
- 1:38:35Speaker 16: just because I felt like that top three running back
- 1:38:38Speaker 16: spot in SEC was all three really good players. It's
- 1:38:41Speaker 16: just about like who was in the better situation, Who's
- 1:38:43Speaker 16: gonna en up getting the yards this year?
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: And with Hardy's situation, I just thought Bob was a
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: safer pick.
- 1:38:49Speaker 16: So a lot of it was pretty I think a
- 1:38:51Speaker 16: lot of chalk and consensus at the top. You know,
- 1:38:53Speaker 16: Chambliss is going to be their Lacy, Colin Simmons, Dylan Stuart.
- 1:38:56Speaker 16: But I tried my best to keep it within the
- 1:38:58Speaker 16: lines of what was allowed. Jake, I will ask you
- 1:39:01Speaker 16: one question because I want to know how many people
- 1:39:02Speaker 16: noticed this. Did you see who the third team kickoff
- 1:39:05Speaker 16: specialist was?
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: I'm looking at it now, I know that Ryan Nibblett
- 1:39:10Speaker 1: was what a first team return specialist and then a
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: second team all purpose guy? Third team kickoff specialist? Wait,
- 1:39:20Speaker 1: why don't you what's going on behind this?
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: So the kickoff specialist spot not to take over the show?
- 1:39:26Speaker 16: Here is no so most people the guys who kick
- 1:39:28Speaker 16: off the ball, like you know, I don't know will
- 1:39:31Speaker 16: Stone last year for Texas. The one who got third
- 1:39:33Speaker 16: team is Terry Boosey. He's a returner. He has never
- 1:39:38Speaker 16: kicked a football in his college career. They messed it
- 1:39:40Speaker 16: up and people just decided to vote for him. So
- 1:39:43Speaker 16: Terry Boosey is a third teamer at a position he
- 1:39:45Speaker 16: doesn't play, and Ryan Nibblett got second team AP votes
- 1:39:48Speaker 16: at a position he also doesn't really play. Like nibble
- 1:39:51Speaker 16: will play on offense for Texas. He is not the
- 1:39:53Speaker 16: same type of player that Mario Kraber is who got
- 1:39:55Speaker 16: the first team. It just goes to show the SEC
- 1:39:58Speaker 16: is such a messed up voting system.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: A well, look, at the risk of reforming everything, why
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: don't we just think about it this way?
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: There were eleven.
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: Total Longhorns who saw their name on an All SEC
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: team of some kind. There's limitations to how much you
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: can take from this, clearly based on the flaws and
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: the voting process that you're revealing for us here. We've
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: become a courtroom drama here this afternoon. But yeah, yeah,
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: but I'm just wondering of the Longhorns whose.
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: Names we didn't see.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: Are there a couple who you feel as though should
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: feel shorted here or feel slighted here? And are there
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: a couple who you feel as though could play their
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: way into these conversations this season in particular, because I know,
- 1:40:40Speaker 1: you know, you never really know until you see it.
- 1:40:42Speaker 16: Yeah, your timing is impeccable because I released this article
- 1:40:45Speaker 16: right before I came out of the show as my
- 1:40:47Speaker 16: internet was having some difficulties where I could come on.
- 1:40:49Speaker 16: But I feel like there's only one true snub, a
- 1:40:52Speaker 16: guy who should have been there who didn't get taken.
- 1:40:53Speaker 16: It's because of the problems I've already addressed. Is that
- 1:40:56Speaker 16: here Kanu, Like, that's one of the sixth best and
- 1:40:58Speaker 16: tier defensive linemen in the SEC coming into this year.
- 1:41:01Speaker 16: I would have had him at third or fourth, right,
- 1:41:03Speaker 16: I think Eccles and then Elijah Griffin and Will Stone
- 1:41:06Speaker 16: who or David Stone. Excuse me, I said Willstone earlier
- 1:41:09Speaker 16: who made it on second team, are there, But when
- 1:41:12Speaker 16: we're talking about him or DJ Hicks, he's more proven
- 1:41:14Speaker 16: than hickses and just a lot of edge rushers got
- 1:41:17Speaker 16: in on the D line instead of Kanye, so I
- 1:41:18Speaker 16: thought he should have gotten there. And then there are
- 1:41:21Speaker 16: some players who I think, as the season progresses, will
- 1:41:24Speaker 16: maybe get some buzz there. I look at all three
- 1:41:26Speaker 16: cornerbacks for Texas, I think one of Mascow, Phillips, Littleton.
- 1:41:30Speaker 16: You could see them, especially with the way they're going
- 1:41:32Speaker 16: to play some more pressman coverage, like a five interception season.
- 1:41:35Speaker 16: That's the kind of thing that gets you on an
- 1:41:36Speaker 16: All SEC team, and I think any of those three
- 1:41:39Speaker 16: can do that. And especially if Lyttleton is playing in
- 1:41:41Speaker 16: base formations as an outside cornerback and getting some of
- 1:41:44Speaker 16: those tackle and PVU breakups in the slot, he could
- 1:41:47Speaker 16: be there. And then I'll throw out Melvin Sionni Melvin
- 1:41:49Speaker 16: sin I. We haven't actually got one hundred percent common
- 1:41:52Speaker 16: information on which one it is, but he's a guy
- 1:41:54Speaker 16: who was I think fourth in the transfer portal offensive
- 1:41:58Speaker 16: line on on three's rankings. He's going to start right
- 1:42:00Speaker 16: tackle for Texas, and if he is really good, then
- 1:42:03Speaker 16: it's gonna show up a lot for Texas. There's gonna
- 1:42:05Speaker 16: be a lot of people that go, Wow, this line
- 1:42:07Speaker 16: is so much more improved. What's the reason you look
- 1:42:09Speaker 16: at the right tackle spot? So I can see that
- 1:42:11Speaker 16: being someone who as the ear progresses on, he ends
- 1:42:13Speaker 16: up getting on to one of these teams.
- 1:42:15Speaker 2: Because Texas' z line looks better and he's a good
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: reason for that.
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's somebody Sark has mentioned quite a bit. I
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: also love the focus that you had both in your
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: piece over at Inside Texas and on the show here
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: today about the long corn defensive back room. I think
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: it's fascinating the track coming into the year, and if
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: we had more time, we'd be able to dive into it,
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: but we do need to break Evan, thanks so much
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: for stopping by. You're not only taking over this show,
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: you're taking over Bucky and BK coming up after this too,
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: so I know we're keeping you busy today. Thanks so much.
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: As always, Thank you guys, appreciate you for having me.
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: All right, that's Evan Vief from Inside Texas. You can
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: follow him on x at Evan Vief.
- 1:42:52Speaker 11: More to come.
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: We're gonna hear from Colin Simmons some sound bites from
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: his media day presser coming up right after this back
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: here on AM thirteen hundred The Zone. Thanks to Evan
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: B for joining us to talk Texas football in that
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: last segment, getting some thoughts on the rest of the
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: SEC as well. One of those guys we mentioned on
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: that first Team All SEC squad. Don't think there was
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: much doubt over the fact that Colin Simmons would find
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: himself there. He was asked several questions in Tampa, one
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: of the Longhorn players along with Arch Manning and Trevor
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: Goosby who made the trip. And we're going to bring
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: you some soundbites from his time at the podium.
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: Yesterday.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: We heard his exclusive conversation with Craig Way and that
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: is available for you over on the iHeartRadio app wherever
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: you get your podcasts. So, Simmons was asked in this
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: particular press conference a few questions We'll bring you here
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: this one starting with whether or not he can find
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: yet another level to his game and grow even more
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: now working with Will mus Champ.
- 1:43:57Speaker 17: Yes, much time, definitely broaden all of ours mindset. You
- 1:44:04Speaker 17: know when it comes to defense, when it comes to
- 1:44:05Speaker 17: the play style that we play, the aggressiveness.
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: How he how he carried hisself and how he come
- 1:44:10Speaker 4: about the game of football. Man, I ain't gonna lie.
- 1:44:14Speaker 17: I'm I'm happy to be a part of this defense
- 1:44:16Speaker 17: and I'm happy to be coached under him.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: How about the relationship that Simmons has now with his
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: new defensive coordinator will much champ on and off the
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: practice field.
- 1:44:26Speaker 4: I came in, I came in his office.
- 1:44:28Speaker 17: I came in his office probably the first second week,
- 1:44:31Speaker 17: sat there, we talked, chopped it up. You know, obviously,
- 1:44:34Speaker 17: I asked him, is there anything you know more than
- 1:44:36Speaker 17: I can do to you know better myself are better
- 1:44:39Speaker 17: the defense? And you know, he just telling me just
- 1:44:41Speaker 17: to be myself, be myself, be you go out there,
- 1:44:44Speaker 17: have fun preciously off and I just I feel like
- 1:44:49Speaker 17: much champions is a is A is a player's coach.
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: And the version of Simmons that we got last year,
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: particularly down the stretch, was a confident one and a
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: player who is no doubt looked at as one of
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: the leaders of this defense. Going into his third and
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: what might be his final season here on the forty Acres,
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: he was asked how his leadership has grown.
- 1:45:09Speaker 17: Just being myself, being myself, showing my teammates that they
- 1:45:12Speaker 17: could just beat themselves. You know, they don't have to change,
- 1:45:15Speaker 17: they don't have to impress nobody. You know, people are
- 1:45:18Speaker 17: going to have opinions regardless of what it is.
- 1:45:21Speaker 4: Good are bad. But at the end of the day,
- 1:45:23Speaker 4: as long as you stay true to yourself.
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: And then move you That's the voice of a confident player,
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: and that tracks in his next answer. And this is
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: one of those questions that a reporter asked to every
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: single player who came into this room. Will you get
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: goosebumps when you're back on the field, back out at
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: your home field? Back in Simmons case of DKR, and
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: Colin took it a different direction.
- 1:45:47Speaker 4: And DKR, No, it's it's home.
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: It's home.
- 1:45:51Speaker 17: Our fans are welcoming, they love us, and they know
- 1:45:54Speaker 17: a reason to getting nervous in DKR, you know, isn't it.
- 1:46:00Speaker 17: It's not a reason because if we make a mistake,
- 1:46:02Speaker 17: move on to the next player. O, fans still don't
- 1:46:04Speaker 17: love us.
- 1:46:05Speaker 2: And they don't but.
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: But they still don't love us. And I just feel
- 1:46:09Speaker 4: like we got a great fan base, a great alumni.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: And yeah, yeah, it's probably a question that ninety five
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: percent of the players said, Yeah, I'll get goosebumps. That's
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: you know, that's that's that's what happens on a fall Saturday.
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: That's what you play for. Simmons says, Now, no reason
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: to be nervous. That's the sign to me of a
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: confident player not to read too much into it. Finally,
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: Sark asked what he thinks a next step for Colin
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Simmons could look like this season.
- 1:46:36Speaker 15: Well, I think it's the ultimately complete player. You know,
- 1:46:39Speaker 15: I thought Colin evolved last year. You know, I think
- 1:46:41Speaker 15: his freshman year he was a pass rusher. I thought
- 1:46:44Speaker 15: last year he grew up in the run game. And
- 1:46:47Speaker 15: now it's that versatility. You know, it's not just lining
- 1:46:50Speaker 15: him up into the boundary and defenses know where he is.
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: It's moving him around.
- 1:46:54Speaker 15: It's the creativity a coach mus champ and our defensive staff.
- 1:46:57Speaker 15: It's calling embracing those things hits him, Understanding you know,
- 1:47:02Speaker 15: really understanding blocking schemes and techniques and how people are
- 1:47:06Speaker 15: going to try to utilize him with chips by running
- 1:47:08Speaker 15: backs or sliding protections in his direction. And then how
- 1:47:12Speaker 15: do you take advantage of those things. I think that's
- 1:47:13Speaker 15: what the really good rushers do. And then it's leadership,
- 1:47:17Speaker 15: and it's him growing into, you know, one of the
- 1:47:20Speaker 15: leaders of our defense and of our team, and I
- 1:47:22Speaker 15: think we've seen a huge uptake in that for him.
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: There you have it, the thoughts of Colin Simmons and
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: his head coach, Tief Sarkejian at SEC Media days. So
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: much fun to hear these players, these coaches sound off
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: before we get closer to kickoff, which is coming up
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: sooner than you might think. We've got another break, and
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: then we'll wrap up the show here on this Friday
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: afternoon edition of the program, Jay Kerrman in for Craig
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: Way on a thirteen hundred zone
