- 0:42Speaker 1: All right, everybody, you're listening to the Philadelphia Sports Table
- 0:45Speaker 1: podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show
- 0:48Speaker 1: in the world, over twelve and a half years strong.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We got a great show coming for you this week.
- 0:54Speaker 1: As I mentioned on the Table Talk show this past Monday,
- 0:57Speaker 1: is if you're watching on YouTube, you're seeing an app
- 1:00Speaker 1: batar of me. And the reason why is I'm a
- 1:03Speaker 1: complete dope. I am a complete dope because I fractured
- 1:07Speaker 1: my nose this past weekend and I have two black
- 1:10Speaker 1: eyes which make me look like I got into some
- 1:13Speaker 1: sort of bar brawl, which did certainly did not happen
- 1:16Speaker 1: to be a much cooler story if that were the case. Anyway,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Warren, my buddy Len Hunsicker, who's laughing, and
- 1:22Speaker 1: he's got to look at this dumb avatar of me
- 1:24Speaker 1: here on YouTube. I do, buddy.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely strange in a in a in a
- 1:30Speaker 2: in a live video format to be doing this.
- 1:33Speaker 1: And I feel like we're back on Skype. Remember when
- 1:35Speaker 1: we used to skype years ago, when it was just
- 1:38Speaker 1: each other's avatars, or actually it was just our our
- 1:41Speaker 1: first initial and last native initials, you know, and we
- 1:44Speaker 1: were just talking to each other. But yeah, this stinks.
- 1:47Speaker 1: It stinks to have this avatar up because people don't
- 1:51Speaker 1: need to see me like this with two but with
- 1:53Speaker 1: two shiners, I mean, you're hideous.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Generally, Yes, this is this is even worse.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Ah, what an idiot I am, folks. I just walking
- 2:07Speaker 1: up to my car in a parking deck and I
- 2:10Speaker 1: trip on the freaking stairs. Like I told you before
- 2:13Speaker 1: we hit the record button. Thank god, I did not
- 2:15Speaker 1: knock my teeth out on the stairs, on the concrete stairs,
- 2:18Speaker 1: Thank goodness for that. But fractured my nose, and I've
- 2:21Speaker 1: got two black eyes. I look like a raccoon. That's
- 2:23Speaker 1: basically what's going on here.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Your face looks like it went to a Halloween costume
- 2:29Speaker 2: party dressed as the Eagles offense.
- 2:31Speaker 1: There, he got, Oh my god, that's perfect. What a
- 2:34Speaker 1: great way to start the show there, Philly sports baby, Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 1: catch the fever. Yeah yeah, Oh my, guys, we do
- 2:44Speaker 1: have a great show, everybody. If you recall last week,
- 2:48Speaker 1: if you did listen to the show last week when
- 2:50Speaker 1: Eric was on Thanksgiving holiday there and we talked about
- 2:54Speaker 1: the top three things that we were most grateful for
- 2:57Speaker 1: and thankful for in the world of Philly Sports. We're
- 3:00Speaker 1: doing a one eighty this week to start us off.
- 3:02Speaker 1: This week, Len and I are gonna get into the
- 3:04Speaker 1: top three things that we are not thankful and grateful
- 3:08Speaker 1: for in the world of Philly Sports, and then after
- 3:11Speaker 1: that we're gonna dive into some Sixers talk, specifically how
- 3:14Speaker 1: this backcourt is looking in the future of this backcourt
- 3:18Speaker 1: that's really been taking shape with Maxi Edgecombe and even
- 3:22Speaker 1: Jared McCain. And from there we've got a ton of
- 3:25Speaker 1: Flyers talk. Len and I are going to dive into
- 3:28Speaker 1: what the injury of Tyson Forrester really looks like from
- 3:32Speaker 1: a more long term perspective, tough loss as this team is,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you know, a playoff bubble type of team, so we're
- 3:40Speaker 1: gonna get into that. And now we we're thrown down
- 3:41Speaker 1: on the table. We got our good friend Kelly Hinkle
- 3:43Speaker 1: from Broadstreet Hockey dot Com. She's going to join us
- 3:45Speaker 1: to analyze where the Flyers are at right now as
- 3:47Speaker 1: we're entering December, and this team is pretty fun to watch.
- 3:50Speaker 1: So that being said, Lenn, I don't know, do you
- 3:53Speaker 1: want to get into our top three list or should
- 3:55Speaker 1: we banter more about how I look horrendous.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Now, now, let's just get it in the top right,
- 4:03Speaker 2: because yeah.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Oh that's right, you gotta get that's right, you get
- 4:06Speaker 1: you've got to work, You've got to work, and you've
- 4:08Speaker 1: got to be up in a few hours.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Yes, can't wait.
- 4:11Speaker 1: All right, Well, folks, Len and I are going to
- 4:14Speaker 1: get into our top three things that we are not
- 4:16Speaker 1: thankful for in the world of Philly sports. Buddy, I'm
- 4:18Speaker 1: gonna let you go first. What's uh your number three
- 4:21Speaker 1: or do you have any honorable mentions or anything like that?
- 4:23Speaker 3: Uh?
- 4:24Speaker 1: What start us off, buddy?
- 4:27Speaker 2: I mean, I'm gonna stay away from the Phillies in
- 4:30Speaker 2: this just because the off season is just starting, so
- 4:35Speaker 2: who knows where it's gonna go. Yeah, maybe they'll do
- 4:38Speaker 2: great things, maybe they'll do horrible things, and we'll revisit
- 4:41Speaker 2: it after all that and I'll be like, oh, yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 2: I'm not thankful for you know, the Phillies off season, right,
- 4:48Speaker 2: So it's just it's way too early. So as far
- 4:51Speaker 2: as that goes, it's just not fair to do that
- 4:53Speaker 2: right now. So yeah, I guess for for right now,
- 4:59Speaker 2: I mean the uh, I mean the number two, number three,
- 5:04Speaker 2: I guess I guess for number three, Yeah, because I'm
- 5:06Speaker 2: not gonna because I feel much more strongly about the
- 5:09Speaker 2: other two. Number three is just the union, not like,
- 5:15Speaker 2: I mean, having a really good year and then immediately,
- 5:19Speaker 2: you know, getting dumped in the playoffs and just it
- 5:21Speaker 2: feels like they're a consistently you know, good organization, but
- 5:28Speaker 2: consistently a bridesmaid. And and that kind of is a
- 5:32Speaker 2: thing where it's like, Okay, there's the supporter shields trophies
- 5:36Speaker 2: if they've won. Now now having two of them are awesome,
- 5:39Speaker 2: and you know, it's it's great to you know, fill
- 5:41Speaker 2: your trophy case in any way, shape or form that
- 5:43Speaker 2: you can. But at some point, when are we going
- 5:46Speaker 2: to break through? And and when are we gonna win
- 5:48Speaker 2: an MLS Cup? And then also kind of going hand
- 5:51Speaker 2: in hand with that, when are we going to have
- 5:54Speaker 2: that guy? You know that that that guy? Because look
- 5:58Speaker 2: at the at the MLS Cup final coming up, you've
- 6:00Speaker 2: got Interer Miami versus Vancouver white Caps. On one side,
- 6:04Speaker 2: you've got Lionel Messi, the most famous, you know, soccer
- 6:08Speaker 2: player in the world for the past ten plus years running.
- 6:12Speaker 2: And on Vancouver you've got Thomas Muller, who is a
- 6:16Speaker 2: long time you know, stand out on the German national team.
- 6:20Speaker 2: So you know where is that guy? Yeah, for the Union,
- 6:25Speaker 2: I don't think they have that.
- 6:27Speaker 1: You're not thinking ty Bribo, You're you're not thinking Brivo.
- 6:30Speaker 2: He's a good player, he's a nice player, but is
- 6:34Speaker 2: he at that level? Is he at that caliber? I
- 6:38Speaker 2: don't know where's a guy? And I know, you know,
- 6:42Speaker 2: soccer is not like basketball where one guy can take
- 6:44Speaker 2: over a game. But you know, where is that guy
- 6:47Speaker 2: that you know you can always kind of hang your
- 6:50Speaker 2: hat on. I don't get me wrong, and I don't
- 6:52Speaker 2: mean to, you know, Besmirch Bribo, I like him, but
- 6:55Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Even And yeah, even Andre Blake had an incredible season
- 7:00Speaker 1: for a goal for a goalie, you know, like an
- 7:02Speaker 1: incredible season. Not the last game of the season against NYCFC,
- 7:07Speaker 1: but but.
- 7:07Speaker 2: He only gave up one goal. R I mean you
- 7:09Speaker 2: know that that. I don't put that on Blake at all,
- 7:12Speaker 2: or or the defense. I mean that the one goal
- 7:15Speaker 2: that NYCFC had was a really pretty display of passing
- 7:19Speaker 2: that that led to a nice ball to open it
- 7:22Speaker 2: up for the goal, and.
- 7:23Speaker 1: That was it.
- 7:24Speaker 2: So really the entire fault of that of that match
- 7:29Speaker 2: to me lies with the Union's attack or lack thereof.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I think you Your number three is interesting because
- 7:35Speaker 1: right before I get to my number three, the I
- 7:38Speaker 1: did have one honorable mention and it's with the Philadelphia Union.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And it goes back to what our good friend of
- 7:44Speaker 1: the podcast from Philadelphia Soccer Now dot com, Josh Schuster,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and I were talking about last week on the show,
- 7:49Speaker 1: had him on for good, you know, twelve fourteen minute segment,
- 7:53Speaker 1: Len and I am not thankful for Ernest Tanner in
- 7:58Speaker 1: the Union front office. Yeah, exactly, I am not thankful
- 8:03Speaker 1: for him right now. Given what this team did this season,
- 8:08Speaker 1: the expectations after Jim Curtin was let go after last year,
- 8:13Speaker 1: nobody knew what the hell was going to happen with
- 8:15Speaker 1: this team and and as a result, there were no
- 8:19Speaker 1: high expectations at all. Did anybody think they were going
- 8:22Speaker 1: to get to where they were in this but like
- 8:25Speaker 1: the semi the semifinals, No, I don't think anybody thought
- 8:28Speaker 1: that in the beginning of the year. Fast forward to
- 8:31Speaker 1: Ernst Tanner, him and the MLS investigation into the allegations
- 8:37Speaker 1: of racist, sexist and homophobic behavior. According to the Guardian,
- 8:43Speaker 1: Pablo mar from The Guardian. You know what a freaking
- 8:45Speaker 1: article he wrote about this situation, like, I'm not thankful
- 8:49Speaker 1: for that, because what was an overall successful season and
- 8:54Speaker 1: even though like you're not thankful inevitably for how the
- 8:57Speaker 1: season ended, leh, but for the overall union season, for
- 9:02Speaker 1: Ernst Tanner to kind of taint it like this, I'm
- 9:05Speaker 1: not thankful for that. That's an honorable mention for me.
- 9:08Speaker 2: It definitely sucks, Yeah, it absolutely does.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So my number three, believe it or not, goes with
- 9:13Speaker 1: our beloved Philadelphia Eagles. Not the team though, not the team.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I may get to the team when in terms of
- 9:21Speaker 1: what I'm not thankful for, but I am not thankful
- 9:25Speaker 1: for those Eagles fans that went to Kevin Petulo's house
- 9:29Speaker 1: threw eggs at his house where he and his family live. First,
- 9:35Speaker 1: we've got for decades snowballs at Sanna being thrown. Now
- 9:39Speaker 1: we're gonna have eggs being thrown at coaches. I am
- 9:43Speaker 1: not thankful for the coming narrative that is just right
- 9:47Speaker 1: around the corner from a national perspective, thanks to these
- 9:51Speaker 1: fucking jackasses. I don't care if it's gonna be an
- 9:54Speaker 1: explicit show now. Seriously, these fucking idiots and these pieces
- 9:58Speaker 1: of garbage for doing that to Kevin Petolo's house whereas
- 10:03Speaker 1: family lives. Are you kidding me? I am not thankful
- 10:06Speaker 1: for these jackass fans you're laughing.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Well, it's just like, I mean, you know, I'm I'm
- 10:13Speaker 2: I was young once, you know, and when I when
- 10:16Speaker 2: I read the when I first read about I was like,
- 10:18Speaker 2: I remember being twelve years old too, because that's the
- 10:20Speaker 2: age when you do something like that. As like I
- 10:24Speaker 2: remember reading the article and going, who eggs somebody's house?
- 10:27Speaker 2: I know in this day, Yeah, are you twelve because
- 10:31Speaker 2: that's when I did that shit, right, you know. So
- 10:33Speaker 2: it's just like, really, are fucking idiots and that's what
- 10:37Speaker 2: we're doing.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Okay, yep, yep. So that's my number three right there
- 10:41Speaker 1: are are the jerk offs that threw the eggs at
- 10:44Speaker 1: Kevin Petolo's house, and one because they did what they
- 10:49Speaker 1: did to Kevin Petulo's family. But first we had snowballs
- 10:53Speaker 1: being thrown at Santa for decades. Now it's going to
- 10:56Speaker 1: be we have the batteries still, you know, batteries being
- 10:58Speaker 1: thrown at the vet. Now it's going to be eggs
- 11:01Speaker 1: being thrown at coaches houses. I hate these people, I
- 11:04Speaker 1: really do know.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I hate snowballs, eggs, batteries. They just got good arms
- 11:08Speaker 2: in this town.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Ye right, buddy, what's your number two here of things
- 11:13Speaker 1: that you are not thankful for in the world of
- 11:14Speaker 1: Philly sports?
- 11:16Speaker 2: You know, before I get my number two, I do,
- 11:21Speaker 2: in fact have two honorable mentions, and I'm going to
- 11:24Speaker 2: and their people. One'm is Kevin Patolo, not very thankful
- 11:30Speaker 2: for the job he's been doing. But I figure that's
- 11:32Speaker 2: low hanging fruit and it's going to be said anyway,
- 11:34Speaker 2: so make that an honorable mention. And also, I'm not
- 11:40Speaker 2: very thankful. And I'm having this as honorable mention because
- 11:43Speaker 2: it's not technically Philadelphia sports per se, but it does
- 11:47Speaker 2: lie within our wheelhouse of rooting interest, and that is
- 11:50Speaker 2: not really thankful for Patrick Kraft. Right now, State a
- 11:55Speaker 2: d y boy. Do they look like a third rate program,
- 12:00Speaker 2: don't they? It's hard to it's and I know people
- 12:03Speaker 2: that still think that Penn State is in that tier
- 12:06Speaker 2: of oh or you know, Alabama and supposed to be
- 12:10Speaker 2: this year, Oklahoma ANDAs supposed to be and all these
- 12:14Speaker 2: big name programs. I got news for you. Penn State
- 12:17Speaker 2: is not in that tier. They're probably not in the
- 12:20Speaker 2: tier right below that. I would say they're they're a
- 12:22Speaker 2: third tier. Even with all the one hundred and seven
- 12:26Speaker 2: thousand seat stadium and they and the big you know,
- 12:29Speaker 2: alumni base and all that stuff, it's hard to take
- 12:33Speaker 2: them seriously right now. Ye're absolutely And I live in
- 12:36Speaker 2: central Pennsylvania where they are the home team and everybody
- 12:39Speaker 2: leads blue and white. But it's just like, guys, you
- 12:42Speaker 2: got to wake up. You're they're not that. It's not
- 12:45Speaker 2: nineteen eighty six anymore. The glory days are, you know,
- 12:49Speaker 2: the glory days at this point. If they were a
- 12:51Speaker 2: person could drink, could vote, got married and had kids
- 12:55Speaker 2: at this point, that's how old the glory days are
- 12:57Speaker 2: for Penn State. So uh, wake up, not that anymore.
- 13:00Speaker 2: And this coaching search, to me is just proven that.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Absolutely you're absolutely. Yeah, really quick, just so I can
- 13:08Speaker 1: before you get to your number two. Yeah, I absolutely
- 13:10Speaker 1: agree with you with Penn State. I really do. I
- 13:12Speaker 1: feel like the Penn State fan base anymore is like
- 13:14Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboy fan base holding on to the glory days,
- 13:19Speaker 1: like you just mentioned, not realizing that, you know what,
- 13:22Speaker 1: especially after this year, those glory days. They're not gonna
- 13:24Speaker 1: be coming back anytime soon. It's it's gonna be a long,
- 13:28Speaker 1: long time. I'm still gonna enjoy going to games with
- 13:30Speaker 1: my family.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's yeah, it's something you do.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm still gonna enjoy. Yeah.
- 13:34Speaker 2: When they have to back door into saying, Okay, Terry Smith,
- 13:38Speaker 2: here's the job because nobody else wanted it, it's it's
- 13:41Speaker 2: a horrendous look. Absolutely, And that's nothing, you know, nothing,
- 13:45Speaker 2: no offense to Terry Smith, but uh, it's just a bad.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Absolutely, all right, what's your number two?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Number two is with regard to the Flyers, and you
- 13:57Speaker 2: know they're they're they're fun to watch, they are interesting.
- 14:02Speaker 2: They did make some moves and improved a little bit.
- 14:04Speaker 2: But I wish and this isn't going to be a
- 14:06Speaker 2: popular opinion at all because people are tired of the losing.
- 14:10Speaker 2: They want to win. I get it. I understand it.
- 14:12Speaker 2: So if you want to write in and say Land
- 14:14Speaker 2: you're an idiot, I get it. I understand it. But
- 14:18Speaker 2: I just you know, okay, Mitch cough is you know good?
- 14:22Speaker 2: Maybe Marton will be good. I just think you needed
- 14:26Speaker 2: to rebuild for another year and just get a crack
- 14:30Speaker 2: at one more like top prospect because to me, the
- 14:35Speaker 2: the when I look at the at the at the team,
- 14:37Speaker 2: it's still Mitch Cough maybe martone down the road and
- 14:42Speaker 2: a bunch of guys, and I just even with yeah,
- 14:46Speaker 2: and I like secrets, you know, but where's where's the
- 14:51Speaker 2: where's the first line center on this team? And where
- 14:54Speaker 2: where is the shutdown Norris Trophy contending defenseman on this team?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Where are they? Where are you going to get them?
- 15:01Speaker 2: I mean, the CAP's going to go up a little bit,
- 15:03Speaker 2: they'll have more money, but guess what sold everybody else.
- 15:07Speaker 2: This isn't the nineties where a salary cap when Ed
- 15:09Speaker 2: Snyder could just buy whoever he had his heart set on.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Philadelphia is not warm, it's not a destination the players
- 15:17Speaker 2: want to go to. It's not in a tax friendly,
- 15:20Speaker 2: you know area. There's none of those things that make
- 15:25Speaker 2: you want to go to that place. And if they
- 15:28Speaker 2: don't have, you know, I don't know, maybe maybe they'll
- 15:32Speaker 2: get somebody to sign there. I don't know, but I
- 15:35Speaker 2: just I don't know. I don't kind of what I
- 15:37Speaker 2: was talking about with the union earlier, I feel like
- 15:40Speaker 2: they still need to search for that guy because I
- 15:42Speaker 2: think you need you need a number of those. And
- 15:45Speaker 2: I don't know, you know, if if Mitchkoff and maybe
- 15:48Speaker 2: martone down the road or if they're going to be enough,
- 15:50Speaker 2: I think you I think you just need more in
- 15:53Speaker 2: that pipeline to convince me that down the road this
- 15:56Speaker 2: team is going to be really good.
- 15:57Speaker 1: It's interesting that you mentioned this because the Flyers, while
- 16:01Speaker 1: they don't have like a ton a ton of picks,
- 16:04Speaker 1: you know, there have been articles written, things that I've
- 16:07Speaker 1: read heard about where it's like, will they actually take
- 16:10Speaker 1: a leap at the trade deadline using some future picks
- 16:14Speaker 1: to get that guy that you're talking about? And I
- 16:18Speaker 1: think possible.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, it is possible. And when I talk about number
- 16:22Speaker 2: one defenseman, okay, let's talk about somebody like Quinn Hughes
- 16:25Speaker 2: from Vancouver, very familiar with Rick Pocket. Yeah, that'd be
- 16:28Speaker 2: great in all if his two brothers weren't playing a
- 16:31Speaker 2: couple miles up the road in New Jersey. I mean,
- 16:33Speaker 2: if you trade for Quinn Hughes, that's great, but you
- 16:36Speaker 2: better have a extension. You better lock him up as
- 16:40Speaker 2: a condition of that trade, right, because if you do
- 16:43Speaker 2: a trade and he's able to walk in a year,
- 16:46Speaker 2: or two. Guess what I'd want to play with my
- 16:48Speaker 2: brothers in New Jersey too, And you're gonna make that
- 16:51Speaker 2: trade for nothing, So that to me, if you're going
- 16:54Speaker 2: to trade for Quinn Hughes, awesome, but that is conditional
- 16:57Speaker 2: upon him signing a long term extension in Philip.
- 17:00Speaker 1: All Right, it's fair, it's fair. I think that's a fair.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Number two for sure that you are not grateful or
- 17:05Speaker 1: thankful for here in the world of Philly sports. My
- 17:08Speaker 1: number two len of something I'm not thankful for in
- 17:11Speaker 1: the world of Philly sports. And this may seem obvious
- 17:13Speaker 1: because it is a sixer storyline that we talk about
- 17:17Speaker 1: over and over and over, but we have to because
- 17:19Speaker 1: of where the team is at and where it could
- 17:22Speaker 1: possibly go, as we are going to be talking about
- 17:25Speaker 1: this back court and the promise that is there. But
- 17:28Speaker 1: for me, what I'm not thankful for is Joel Embiid's
- 17:32Speaker 1: and Paul George's contracts. I mean, for Embiid, the contract
- 17:36Speaker 1: extension he signed in September twenty twenty five begins in
- 17:40Speaker 1: the twenty twenty twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven season
- 17:43Speaker 1: runs through twenty twenty nine. Just locking in that large
- 17:48Speaker 1: salary for the coming years, and with Paul George four
- 17:51Speaker 1: years that two hundred and eleven point five million dollar
- 17:54Speaker 1: contract he signed in July of last year, and it
- 17:58Speaker 1: included a player option for the final season, making the
- 18:01Speaker 1: deal even riskier for the Sixers. So for me, the
- 18:03Speaker 1: contracts just create this major uncertainty around the team's future
- 18:08Speaker 1: because of the high likelihood that neither player will be
- 18:13Speaker 1: consistently available. And we continue to see that here in
- 18:15Speaker 1: twenty twenty five, you know, potentially dooming seasons before they
- 18:20Speaker 1: even begin down the road. Who knows what's going to
- 18:23Speaker 1: happen with these contracts and what Darryl Mory may be
- 18:28Speaker 1: able to do, if anything. But for me, I'm not
- 18:31Speaker 1: thankful for Joel Embiid's and Paul George's contracts.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah, now I U one hundred percent agree, And when
- 18:39Speaker 2: we get to my number one, we're going to be
- 18:41Speaker 2: on the same topic.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Let's do it. Let's do it. It's a great sad way,
- 18:44Speaker 1: I guess.
- 18:45Speaker 2: I mean, like you said, I mean, I have you know,
- 18:48Speaker 2: I have a spot track up now cap it in
- 18:52Speaker 2: in twenty twenty six, twenty twenty seven for Embiid fifty
- 18:56Speaker 2: eight million, one hundred dollars. That's thirty five percent of
- 18:59Speaker 2: the cap twenty seven, twenty twenty eight sixty two million,
- 19:03Speaker 2: seven hundred and forty eight thousand dollars and then twenty
- 19:06Speaker 2: twenty eight, twenty twenty nine sixty seven million, three hundred
- 19:10Speaker 2: and ninety six thousand dollars for a guy that And listen,
- 19:15Speaker 2: I I I'm sure that Joel Embiid wants to play.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I mean, I hear him, you know, say this all
- 19:21Speaker 2: the time. I don't think it's a thing of you know, oh,
- 19:25Speaker 2: he's just loafing and he doesn't care. I don't think
- 19:28Speaker 2: it's that. I don't think he genuinely wants to play.
- 19:30Speaker 2: But to give that money to a guy that has
- 19:35Speaker 2: is big, so you have a big body frame and
- 19:39Speaker 2: then you've got one leg that was hurt for a
- 19:42Speaker 2: while now the other one is that's that's the foundation
- 19:46Speaker 2: of carrying that that frame on a guy that is
- 19:49Speaker 2: now on the wrong side of thirty, who has historically
- 19:53Speaker 2: never been healthy. It is irresponsible and irresponse is being kind.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Darryl Morey should and I think I said it in
- 20:06Speaker 2: a in a group chat a lot. If I could
- 20:09Speaker 2: catapult him into the sun, I would he. I mean,
- 20:15Speaker 2: this contract is a genuine albatross. And I'm not even
- 20:19Speaker 2: I haven't even gotten into Paul George yet, who also
- 20:22Speaker 2: but like, think of, okay, think about your best case
- 20:24Speaker 2: scenario for Joel Embiid. Yeah, okay, fifty fifty game regular
- 20:29Speaker 2: season and then hoping for a healthy playoff run from him.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Do you know that is to me the best case
- 20:37Speaker 2: scenario for him going forward, which has never happened, Which
- 20:40Speaker 2: has never happened, right, and now at age thirty one,
- 20:43Speaker 2: do you think it's gonna start happening now or do
- 20:47Speaker 2: you think it's more in the in the you know,
- 20:50Speaker 2: twenty to thirty games a year range every year going forward? Yeah,
- 20:54Speaker 2: I know which one I'm betting on, and it's not
- 20:56Speaker 2: the good option. So I mean, and that's and you
- 20:59Speaker 2: have that going forward? You know you have And I
- 21:01Speaker 2: don't know if this is a Mory trader if it
- 21:03Speaker 2: was for Morey, but you know, a team that just
- 21:06Speaker 2: won the damn NBA Championship in the thunder and they
- 21:08Speaker 2: have our first round pick unless it's like one through four,
- 21:12Speaker 2: it's just like we're we're about to talk about all
- 21:14Speaker 2: these good guards that they have and how exciting it
- 21:17Speaker 2: is and fun to watch them, and man, they just
- 21:19Speaker 2: have nobody, no bigs to play off of there. I mean,
- 21:24Speaker 2: you know, Barlow and Watford have been interesting in spots,
- 21:29Speaker 2: but those aren't NBA primetime bigs. Those aren't bigs that
- 21:34Speaker 2: are part of a contending, you know, championship team. It's
- 21:38Speaker 2: just not so now we're now we're wasting you know,
- 21:42Speaker 2: the fruitful beginning part of these young guards careers on
- 21:48Speaker 2: on Albatross's in the front court and em beating George
- 21:51Speaker 2: who just I mean and Paul George twenty twenty six,
- 21:54Speaker 2: twenty twenty seven fifty four million and change, twenty twenty seven,
- 21:58Speaker 2: twenty twenty eight fifty six and a half million dollars
- 22:02Speaker 2: a year. So it's just all of that money, and
- 22:06Speaker 2: you know, Paul George is maybe you're going to get
- 22:07Speaker 2: maybe half a season out of him. He's thirty five,
- 22:10Speaker 2: and he's going to be getting that money over the
- 22:12Speaker 2: next couple of years. It is I mean, there are
- 22:16Speaker 2: drunken sailors at Port that just got paid that spend
- 22:20Speaker 2: money more conservatively than Darryl. It is unbelievable how bad
- 22:26Speaker 2: he's set this franchise back. It is borderline criminal, It
- 22:31Speaker 2: really is. Yeah, Darryl Morey, I am not thankful for you,
- 22:35Speaker 2: all right.
- 22:36Speaker 1: My number one buddy. Before we go to our first
- 22:39Speaker 1: break here, it is the Philadelphia Eagles offense looking the
- 22:43Speaker 1: way that it does with basically what else could it be, Yeah, exactly,
- 22:48Speaker 1: with basically having the same group of guys that won
- 22:51Speaker 1: the Super Bowl just a season ago. And I think
- 22:55Speaker 1: for me, really the run game and how Kevin Petula
- 23:00Speaker 1: has gone from a play design starting with the offensive line.
- 23:06Speaker 1: What do we always say on this podcast, you are
- 23:08Speaker 1: not gonna have a productive offense if you don't have
- 23:09Speaker 1: a solid offensive line in the run game or the
- 23:11Speaker 1: passing game. The run game went from historically good to bad.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I mean the look in this offensive line. They still
- 23:20Speaker 1: pass protect at a pretty high level. We are still
- 23:23Speaker 1: seeing that, but the run blocking has just been straight
- 23:26Speaker 1: up terrible. Bizarre assignments on run calls. They're asking interior
- 23:31Speaker 1: offensive linemen to basically reach block across two plus gaps
- 23:37Speaker 1: against quick interior defensive lineman or two hundred and thirty
- 23:43Speaker 1: pounds tight ends without a without like a mean bone
- 23:46Speaker 1: in their body, being asked to kick out and block
- 23:49Speaker 1: edge rushers. There's no reason Grant cal Katara should be
- 23:52Speaker 1: doing that, and they swing between gap and zone without
- 23:55Speaker 1: tying it all together. And Kevin Pittulo has done quite
- 24:00Speaker 1: a job, a baffling job, I should say, of putting
- 24:04Speaker 1: this offense together with with Nick Sirianni's blessing for thirteen
- 24:10Speaker 1: weeks of play. You know, it's just it's the one
- 24:13Speaker 1: thing I am not thankful for. It's like the same
- 24:16Speaker 1: guys on offense, except for Tyler Steen at this point,
- 24:19Speaker 1: it's like the same.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Guys and Lane Johnson has been out, I guess, but yeah,
- 24:23Speaker 2: all the same skill players, most of the same offensive line.
- 24:28Speaker 2: You know. Look, I know Hearts is at his moments
- 24:31Speaker 2: where he hasn't been great, and Barkley is, you know,
- 24:34Speaker 2: seemingly taking a huge step back. But what's new here
- 24:38Speaker 2: and what seems to be the problem and has been
- 24:40Speaker 2: the problem all season long? Yep, and it's and it's
- 24:43Speaker 2: the offensive play calling. I don't know what this guy
- 24:46Speaker 2: has to do, yeah to get fired. I really don't. Yeah.
- 24:50Speaker 2: I almost like want to go to a press conference
- 24:54Speaker 2: where Sirianni's taking questions and just say, let me know now,
- 24:57Speaker 2: if we're going to continue to do this, I'm going
- 24:59Speaker 2: to run back to twenty twenty three when you guys
- 25:02Speaker 2: shit the bed for the rest of the season. Yeah,
- 25:03Speaker 2: and I'll reopen my FanDuel account and I'll just start
- 25:06Speaker 2: betting against you guys again.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:08Speaker 2: But if that's what we're gonna do, let me know
- 25:10Speaker 2: and then I'll make some money off the money and yep,
- 25:12Speaker 2: and we can go from there, because that's what they're
- 25:15Speaker 2: doing right now. It's it's it's disheartening to watch. I
- 25:19Speaker 2: mean it just you can't have watched either of the
- 25:22Speaker 2: I mean hell previous two games, but even a lot
- 25:24Speaker 2: of the stuff before that and thought to yourself, this
- 25:28Speaker 2: team's ready for a big playoff run, right, It's it's
- 25:31Speaker 2: just not feasible on one thing I wanted to ask you, Yeah,
- 25:35Speaker 2: and just curious and it's not a huge thing. I'm
- 25:39Speaker 2: not and I'm not saying, oh, bench Saquan, which because
- 25:42Speaker 2: it's ridiculous, but I just feel like when they give
- 25:46Speaker 2: Tank Bigsby Rushes, Yeah, he does a nice job.
- 25:50Speaker 1: He does. He's averaging like eight nine yards of carry
- 25:52Speaker 1: this year.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Should we maybe give him a couple more carries? You're
- 25:55Speaker 2: absolutely right, Yes, it seems to be. That seems to
- 25:58Speaker 2: be working. All right. I'm not saying, Okay, Tank Bigsby's
- 26:02Speaker 2: the lead running back right now, we're benching Saquan that's
- 26:05Speaker 2: an absurd notion. But if that's an aspect of the offense,
- 26:09Speaker 2: it's actually working. Hey, let's do more of that.
- 26:12Speaker 1: I mean, if you would give him five or six
- 26:14Speaker 1: more running plays per game, I don't think there'd be
- 26:16Speaker 1: anything wrong with that, len at all.
- 26:17Speaker 2: No, not at all.
- 26:18Speaker 1: No, Absolutely, he's getting large chunk plays. And yes, eight
- 26:22Speaker 1: nine yards of carry is not sustainable and that number
- 26:26Speaker 1: is going to come down if you give him five
- 26:27Speaker 1: or six more carries. But at the end of the day,
- 26:30Speaker 1: he's being productive. You know, he's being productive, and that's
- 26:33Speaker 1: what you want from there. Oh my gosh, So you're
- 26:35Speaker 1: absolutely correct. We absolutely should be seeing more Tank Bigsby
- 26:39Speaker 1: for sure. So that's the end of our list here, folks.
- 26:43Speaker 1: We're going to take a break. And before we get
- 26:45Speaker 1: to break, really quick, make sure that if you're watching
- 26:47Speaker 1: on YouTube, you like and subscribe to us, hit the
- 26:49Speaker 1: bell to be notified and we post new videos again
- 26:51Speaker 1: like this video. We would greatly appreciate it helps get
- 26:54Speaker 1: us in front of other YouTube watchers and followers out there. Also,
- 27:00Speaker 1: we're on various social media sites as well. Just search
- 27:02Speaker 1: out the Philadelphia Sports Table podcast show. You're gonna find
- 27:05Speaker 1: us out there. So we're gonna take a break and
- 27:07Speaker 1: when we come back, got some quick Sixers talk, some
- 27:10Speaker 1: quick Flyers talk. We'll be back in just a bit.
- 27:14Speaker 1: All right, we're back and we are now gonna dive
- 27:18Speaker 1: into some pretty quick talk with regard to the Philadelphia
- 27:22Speaker 1: seventy six Ers and the Flyers that I believe it
- 27:25Speaker 1: or not, our top three list took a little longer
- 27:27Speaker 1: when I thought it was gonna that. I thought it
- 27:29Speaker 1: was gonna take a great discussion, but really, you know
- 27:33Speaker 1: your discussion points on your top three list about the Sixers,
- 27:37Speaker 1: about Embiid's contract, Paul George's contract. But what we're seeing
- 27:42Speaker 1: from this Sixers back court now with Maxi, Edgecomb and McCain,
- 27:46Speaker 1: they are the future that is taking shape. There are
- 27:49Speaker 1: two dichotomies going on here. You have the future in
- 27:52Speaker 1: front of us that we are loving to watch night
- 27:55Speaker 1: after night. Tyrese, Maxi, we're talking an NBA All Star
- 27:59Speaker 1: like like we're talking like a top six player in
- 28:02Speaker 1: the NBA. VJ. Edgecombe just so fun to watch as well,
- 28:06Speaker 1: McCain's gonna be getting back into the fold here, and
- 28:09Speaker 1: it's being squandered because of Embiid and George. But I
- 28:14Speaker 1: just want to focus on the positive here because I
- 28:16Speaker 1: look at this, yeah, this backcourt buddy, and it does
- 28:20Speaker 1: give me that bit of hope and promise for the
- 28:22Speaker 1: future when it comes to the Philadelphia seventy six ers.
- 28:25Speaker 1: Like that's how I'm feeling right now. And maybe I'm
- 28:27Speaker 1: just grasping onto this hope that they're gonna be able
- 28:29Speaker 1: to take things in such a new direction that the
- 28:32Speaker 1: other two albatrosses won't necessarily matter, even though I know
- 28:35Speaker 1: in the back of my mind they will. But I
- 28:37Speaker 1: love what we're seeing from these guys, especially Edgecombe and
- 28:40Speaker 1: Tyrese Maxi. It's been really great to watch.
- 28:43Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's the thing, you know, you gotta just
- 28:46Speaker 2: if you're gonna stick through a season with the team,
- 28:48Speaker 2: you have to find the things that are worth watching.
- 28:51Speaker 2: And right, you know, maybe the Sixers won't necessarily be
- 28:54Speaker 2: a good team, but with those guards that they have,
- 28:58Speaker 2: they might be a fun team. And listen, if you're
- 29:01Speaker 2: not going to be good, you might as well be fun, right,
- 29:03Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean it's it's really great to watch
- 29:07Speaker 2: Edgecombe blossom athletically and just you know, as he's going
- 29:11Speaker 2: to continue to learn in the league, just watch him
- 29:14Speaker 2: grow as a player. I think McCain is going to
- 29:17Speaker 2: be a really good bench guard if Maury doesn't trade
- 29:21Speaker 2: him for, you know, to try to get somebody else
- 29:23Speaker 2: in here, which who knows. And then maxi is I mean,
- 29:27Speaker 2: just the leaps that he's taken. I remember when he
- 29:30Speaker 2: was drafted kinda I didn't really know a lot about him.
- 29:35Speaker 2: I saw a little bit of him and Kentucky, but
- 29:37Speaker 2: felt like, Okay, you know, he's a guy, maybe maybe
- 29:40Speaker 2: he'll be good, especially kind of where they draft him.
- 29:42Speaker 2: I think he's like twenty first or whatever. And he's
- 29:44Speaker 2: just become so much more than I ever thought he would.
- 29:47Speaker 2: And you just watch from year to year, leaps in
- 29:50Speaker 2: his game every single year the point now where it's
- 29:53Speaker 2: just like, man, he really is one of the top
- 29:56Speaker 2: twenty players in the NBA. It's it's crazy to see.
- 29:59Speaker 2: And and also how it's just it's everybody knows it,
- 30:04Speaker 2: nobody fights it. This used to be joel On Beiad's team.
- 30:07Speaker 2: This is Tyrese Maxie's team now and everybody just accepts
- 30:10Speaker 2: it and they're on board with it. And he even
- 30:13Speaker 2: in his demeanor, it seems like he just more confident,
- 30:16Speaker 2: more self assured. He's a leader, and it's great to.
- 30:19Speaker 1: See absolutely, and real quick, buddy, before we get to
- 30:22Speaker 1: some flyers talking, before I let you go here, I
- 30:25Speaker 1: think Jared McCain. Of course, he was down in the
- 30:28Speaker 1: G League. He had a stint there, just kind of
- 30:31Speaker 1: getting back into some form after his injury. The thing
- 30:35Speaker 1: with McCain is, and I read this recently as well.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I think it might have been Kyle Nubeck over at
- 30:40Speaker 1: phl Y that wrote something along the lines of the
- 30:43Speaker 1: fact that McCain is theoretically the trickiest fit on the
- 30:47Speaker 1: roster because basically he's a guard that's really kind of
- 30:51Speaker 1: too small to help Tyrese Maxey from a defensive standpoint,
- 30:54Speaker 1: kind of complicates the rotations and the lineup combinations. But
- 30:58Speaker 1: just he's so smart, the touch that he has, like
- 31:02Speaker 1: he understands his game so much, it's kind of hard
- 31:05Speaker 1: to shove him aside or even put him in a
- 31:08Speaker 1: box at all. And I think because he has scored
- 31:13Speaker 1: double digits in four of his last five games and
- 31:16Speaker 1: he's a playmaker as well. It's it's really tough to
- 31:21Speaker 1: say that he can't necessarily be a key figure on
- 31:24Speaker 1: this team moving forward.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, maybe, you know, maybe he is
- 31:31Speaker 2: just a quintessential, really good bench guard. Maybe he's you know, defensively,
- 31:36Speaker 2: you know, he's not going to wow you. But you know,
- 31:38Speaker 2: maybe he is just your classic instant offense guard off
- 31:42Speaker 2: of the bench, which you know, anybody it's of a
- 31:45Speaker 2: certain age in Detroit remembers Vinnie Johnson the microwave. He
- 31:48Speaker 2: was that guard right off the bench. It would just
- 31:50Speaker 2: come in and hit some shots and just give you offense.
- 31:53Speaker 2: And maybe in a perfect case scenario, that's what McCain
- 31:57Speaker 2: could be for the Sixers. And he you know that
- 32:00Speaker 2: a limited stint he had last season, he showed it.
- 32:02Speaker 2: He showed his cable put up the big numbers. And
- 32:05Speaker 2: you know, he's missed a lot of time, you know,
- 32:07Speaker 2: with with the injuries, so developmentally it might be holding
- 32:11Speaker 2: him back a little bit. I mean, I know that
- 32:12Speaker 2: the shooting numbers aren't great so far this season, but
- 32:16Speaker 2: you know, as he gets reps and gets you know,
- 32:19Speaker 2: more into the flow of things, I expect those numbers
- 32:21Speaker 2: to tick up incrementally incrementally, and I think, I think
- 32:25Speaker 2: will eventually be be perfectly fine. I have no concerns
- 32:29Speaker 2: about the Sixers backcourt at all going forward. You know,
- 32:33Speaker 2: it's just a matter of, you know, how do you
- 32:35Speaker 2: how do you make the front court better? But yeah,
- 32:38Speaker 2: for right now, I mean, the backcourt's fun to watch.
- 32:41Speaker 2: It's fun to see the uh, just the kind of
- 32:44Speaker 2: around the league, the recognition. Because I was watching a
- 32:47Speaker 2: clip from a podcast, which is weird. JJ Redick has
- 32:51Speaker 2: a podcast that he does with Lebron James. I just
- 32:54Speaker 2: having a player and a coach do a podcast together
- 32:57Speaker 2: is just strange to me. But they were talking about
- 32:59Speaker 2: Tyree Maxie and Lebron James at one point in the clip,
- 33:03Speaker 2: and he sounds exasperated when he's when he says it,
- 33:05Speaker 2: but they're talking about Maxie and he and he just
- 33:07Speaker 2: goes that motherfucker just never gets tired. Yeah, And it's
- 33:13Speaker 2: it's just fun to see, you know, a a top five,
- 33:17Speaker 2: top three at whatever you want to consider him, all
- 33:19Speaker 2: time player like Lebron James say that about the young
- 33:22Speaker 2: emerging guard on your team. It's cool to see it.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Absolutely is let us know you're thinking about this Sixers team.
- 33:29Speaker 1: We would love to hear from you, Philadelphia Sports Table
- 33:32Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. Shoot us off an email. We'd
- 33:35Speaker 1: love to read it here on the show, or if
- 33:37Speaker 1: you'd like leave a comment. If you're watching on YouTube,
- 33:40Speaker 1: what are you thinking about with this Philadelphia seventy six
- 33:42Speaker 1: ers team. Let us know, Len before I let you go,
- 33:45Speaker 1: we want to dive into the Flyers losing Tyson Forrester
- 33:49Speaker 1: now for months, what does this actually mean for the team?
- 33:52Speaker 1: Had the upper body injury that was really kind of
- 33:54Speaker 1: just bizarre the way that it looked as it was
- 33:58Speaker 1: it was happening. And and so I'm gonna be talking to
- 34:00Speaker 1: Kelly Hinkel from Broadstreet Hockey dot com about this as well.
- 34:03Speaker 1: But I think for me, Forrester was already a really, really,
- 34:08Speaker 1: really good hockey player. And I think it's tough. This
- 34:11Speaker 1: is so tough for us to swallow, because you know,
- 34:14Speaker 1: we take one step forward with this team, to only
- 34:18Speaker 1: take two steps back, it seems like that's happening all
- 34:20Speaker 1: the time. He scored ten goals in his first twenty
- 34:23Speaker 1: one games here. This season, he was on a thirty
- 34:27Speaker 1: nine goal pace over eighty two games and a thirty
- 34:31Speaker 1: seven goal pace. Accounting for the four games that he
- 34:33Speaker 1: missed in November with his injured foot, only twelve NHL
- 34:37Speaker 1: players scored more than thirty seven goals last season to
- 34:41Speaker 1: kind of put this pace into context. So this is
- 34:44Speaker 1: a huge loss for the seventy for seventy six ers,
- 34:47Speaker 1: for the Flyers, huge huge loss. And we're going to
- 34:51Speaker 1: get into you know, who is going to maybe replace
- 34:53Speaker 1: him with Kelly and stuff too, But like, it really
- 34:55Speaker 1: sucks man to lose him due to the season he
- 34:58Speaker 1: was having. Again, this Flyers team just can't catch a
- 35:01Speaker 1: break sometimes.
- 35:03Speaker 2: Yeah, And it sucks because earlier on I was talking about, Okay,
- 35:07Speaker 2: your foundational pieces in Mitchikoff and potentially Martone once he
- 35:11Speaker 2: you know, comes up from Michigan State. But I mean,
- 35:14Speaker 2: Van Forster was a guy that you know, has become
- 35:18Speaker 2: more than I thought he was going to be. You know,
- 35:20Speaker 2: sound defensive player, has been scoring at a great clip.
- 35:23Speaker 2: I mean, you talk, I don't know if he's someone
- 35:26Speaker 2: you would consider a foundational piece, but he's a hell
- 35:28Speaker 2: of a complimentary player, yep. I mean he's a guy
- 35:31Speaker 2: that you need. You need guys like that on your
- 35:33Speaker 2: team if you're gonna contend and it's a shame he's
- 35:36Speaker 2: going to miss so much time, especially you know, he's
- 35:39Speaker 2: still a young guy and he's still developing too, so
- 35:41Speaker 2: this is going to cut, as we said about McCain
- 35:44Speaker 2: into his development a little bit. So yeah, it's a
- 35:48Speaker 2: bad break, literally, I guess. Yeah, you know it sucks.
- 35:53Speaker 2: I mean because he's you know, one of those guys
- 35:55Speaker 2: that when you tune into the Flyers, you know, he's
- 35:58Speaker 2: one of the guys that I think your eyes are drawn.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Absolutely all right, buddy, I know that was a shorter segment,
- 36:04Speaker 1: but I know you gotta get going, man, you gotta
- 36:05Speaker 1: you gotta get up for work in a few hours here,
- 36:08Speaker 1: So you have any final thoughts, You got any final
- 36:11Speaker 1: thoughts here before I let you go.
- 36:14Speaker 2: Now, let's uh. I don't know. Maybe Penn State will
- 36:17Speaker 2: be calling you or I about that.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Honestly, there would be so many great coaches that just
- 36:24Speaker 1: getting a microphone or sit on their couch that understand
- 36:27Speaker 1: the game of football. Who knows. Maybe we can hold
- 36:30Speaker 1: out hope, Maybe we can hold out hope that it happens.
- 36:32Speaker 1: I know you've been looking for a new job, right.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Sure, I'll take that job. I won't even cost as
- 36:38Speaker 2: much as most.
- 36:39Speaker 1: No, you wouldn't. I mean you don't even need millions, right,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you'd like them, but you don't need it. Yes, sure, right, buddy,
- 36:47Speaker 1: I'll let you go. We're gonna go to break everybody
- 36:50Speaker 1: when we get back. We got Kelly Hinkle from Broadstreet
- 36:53Speaker 1: Hockey dot Com to talk more about this Flyers team.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Stick around, We'll be right back.
- 36:59Speaker 4: And now on the table.
- 37:03Speaker 1: And joining us to dive into this Philadelphia Flyers team
- 37:07Speaker 1: and what has been happening, my gosh on the ice
- 37:10Speaker 1: with so much of this talent. There's a lot of
- 37:12Speaker 1: storylines to get into with regard to the Philadelphia Flyers.
- 37:16Speaker 1: We have from broad Street Hockey dot Com and she's
- 37:19Speaker 1: also over at phl y talking some Flyers every now
- 37:24Speaker 1: and again. We've got our good friend Kelly Hinkle. Kelly,
- 37:26Speaker 1: thanks so much for joining us here.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Thanks for having me, Jeff, You know I love coming
- 37:30Speaker 4: on here with you guys.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Great talking Flyers with you all the time all the time.
- 37:34Speaker 1: Look Like I said, there's so many storylines to dive
- 37:37Speaker 1: into with regard to this team, and honestly, I've just
- 37:40Speaker 1: I've enjoyed watching this Flyers team so far this year.
- 37:44Speaker 1: But the one puzzling aspect and an individual on this
- 37:48Speaker 1: team we got to get into right off the bat,
- 37:51Speaker 1: and it's Matt Ve, Mitchkoff, and man. Monday night, we
- 37:54Speaker 1: saw Rick Tocket actually giving Mitchkoff some more more ice
- 37:58Speaker 1: time and a powerplay shift right after the Tyson Forrester injury,
- 38:02Speaker 1: which we're gonna get to in a little bit. Lenn
- 38:05Speaker 1: and I were actually just talking about that as well.
- 38:08Speaker 1: But look, Kelly, I hope that we see Matt Bay
- 38:13Speaker 1: Mitchkov more and more on the ice as I've been
- 38:16Speaker 1: really kind of getting tired of the whole narrative of
- 38:19Speaker 1: you know, what's happening with Mitchkov and taking and why
- 38:22Speaker 1: has his offensive creativity been stifled by Rick Talcket blah
- 38:25Speaker 1: blah blah. I'm kind of getting tired of these narratives
- 38:28Speaker 1: and those those behind the scenes storylines that we've been
- 38:31Speaker 1: hearing about. So what what are your overall thoughts on
- 38:35Speaker 1: Matt Bay Mitchkov's season thus far and what we're seeing
- 38:38Speaker 1: from him, and if you think Rick Tackett is going
- 38:41Speaker 1: to give him some more playing time in the future here.
- 38:43Speaker 3: So I mean, as much as I want to blame
- 38:48Speaker 3: Rick Talcket, for kind of the overall mot Beay Michkov
- 38:52Speaker 3: picture that we've seen so far this season. I mean,
- 38:56Speaker 3: Michkov did not come into the season playing like we
- 38:59Speaker 3: expected him to. He didn't look very good. He struggled
- 39:02Speaker 3: a lot at the start, and it really took some
- 39:04Speaker 3: time for him to get his legs under himself. And now, thankfully,
- 39:09Speaker 3: it looks like he has, which is obviously great news
- 39:11Speaker 3: for everybody. And it seems like as his play has
- 39:15Speaker 3: gotten better, tak It has kind of started to increase
- 39:21Speaker 3: his ice time.
- 39:22Speaker 4: It seems like maybe it took.
- 39:23Speaker 3: Talk It a little while to kind of fully trust
- 39:27Speaker 3: that Mitchkov was back to what we expect.
- 39:30Speaker 4: Him to be, right.
- 39:31Speaker 3: Because he started to turn things around, and the ice
- 39:33Speaker 3: time really didn't increase as much as I think a
- 39:35Speaker 3: lot of fans would have liked it to. But lately,
- 39:38Speaker 3: like you said, he's been getting some power play time.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Charlie O'Connor, looks like he's is at practice this morning.
- 39:45Speaker 3: He's on the top power play unit with Zegres and
- 39:48Speaker 3: practice today, So it looks like that's going to be
- 39:51Speaker 3: an ongoing thing, which I think is great. So yeah,
- 39:56Speaker 3: it's it's kind of like I think it's it's less
- 39:58Speaker 3: tack it as much. Like, to be quite honest with you,
- 40:02Speaker 3: I kind of want I kind of want to blame
- 40:03Speaker 3: it on Talcket, like I thought that, like not to
- 40:06Speaker 3: get off topic, but like I thought before the season
- 40:08Speaker 3: started that like Rick Tocket was going to kind of
- 40:13Speaker 3: like make me look stupid for having the opinions about
- 40:16Speaker 3: him that I had, right, And I honestly that I
- 40:19Speaker 3: would have welcomed to that because that would have been
- 40:21Speaker 3: great news for the Flyers and for me personally as
- 40:23Speaker 3: a fan.
- 40:25Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 40:26Speaker 3: If he has all the way I mean, like he's
- 40:29Speaker 3: he's definitely not John Tortorella. But so far, I kind
- 40:33Speaker 3: of haven't seen the sort of like forward thinking, progressive
- 40:39Speaker 3: coach that he kind of sounded like he was going
- 40:42Speaker 3: to be when he was giving interviews before the season.
- 40:44Speaker 1: We were all propping him up. We were all propping
- 40:46Speaker 1: him up that was going to happen because we wanted
- 40:49Speaker 1: to right.
- 40:50Speaker 4: We wanted to happen right.
- 40:51Speaker 3: We wanted this not to be an old hockey man choice.
- 40:54Speaker 3: We wanted this not to be like, oh, this guy
- 40:56Speaker 3: just got hired Jones, Like we really wanted it to be. Yes,
- 41:01Speaker 3: you know the best possible version, which is like that
- 41:04Speaker 3: this whole thing that like Rick talkt is some kind
- 41:06Speaker 3: of coaching paragon and we just don't understand and everyone
- 41:09Speaker 3: thinks he's so great and you're gonna see so far.
- 41:13Speaker 4: I'm really sure that I've seen that.
- 41:15Speaker 1: But you know, well, we're gonna get into it more. Yeah,
- 41:17Speaker 1: we're gonna get into him more. Teaser everybody. That's what
- 41:19Speaker 1: We're gonna close the interview out. We're gonna get out. Yeah,
- 41:23Speaker 1: we're gonna talk more Rick Tocket in the future here
- 41:26Speaker 1: on this, in this discussion here. But look, Kelly, let's
- 41:29Speaker 1: let's move over to an injury that that really is
- 41:32Speaker 1: gonna play a pretty big role I think in what
- 41:35Speaker 1: happens with this Flyers team over the next few months.
- 41:38Speaker 1: Here I mentioned the Tyson Forrester injury, and it really
- 41:41Speaker 1: was a very awkward looking upper body injury. Yeah, I mean,
- 41:46Speaker 1: I just wonder what it's going to mean for this
- 41:48Speaker 1: team here moving forward over these next few months. I
- 41:51Speaker 1: swear to God, this freaking team, every time they take
- 41:53Speaker 1: a step forward, it's two steps back with something else.
- 41:57Speaker 1: Incredibly frustrating when these things happen and occur so like
- 42:01Speaker 1: I'm wondering, are you like I've read. I've read some
- 42:04Speaker 1: things that Charlie O'Connor, our friend has has written as well.
- 42:09Speaker 1: Hearing other Flyers podcast too, folks talking about this, are
- 42:12Speaker 1: you thinking that we might see Bunk or Gribenkan it
- 42:16Speaker 1: replaces Forrester in the short term and the long term?
- 42:19Speaker 1: Who do you think really needs to step up here?
- 42:22Speaker 3: So it looks like in the short term it's going
- 42:24Speaker 3: to be Gribenkin. Yeah, he's the one that's kind of
- 42:27Speaker 3: slided in on that third line in practice today. So
- 42:32Speaker 3: looking like short term is going to be Gribenkin that's
- 42:34Speaker 3: getting an opportunity to step up and see what he
- 42:37Speaker 3: can do on a line with Kate's and Brink. Obviously,
- 42:41Speaker 3: Nikita Gribenkin is not Tyson Forrester. Forster has been one
- 42:43Speaker 3: of the Flyers' best players this season, So of course,
- 42:46Speaker 3: like you said, of course it's him that goes down
- 42:48Speaker 3: with a freak injury. Ye, and he's going to be
- 42:52Speaker 3: out for two to three months, which is just wild,
- 42:56Speaker 3: Like that's it's pretty much, you know, not untill after
- 42:59Speaker 3: the Olympic break, we probably won't see him, which is
- 43:01Speaker 3: just like crazy. But it looks like it's going to
- 43:05Speaker 3: be Gribencan getting the opportunity. I know that Alex Bump
- 43:09Speaker 3: you mentioned. I think he was looking pretty good. Maddy
- 43:14Speaker 3: Campbell of her at Brushreet Hockey, she does a lot
- 43:16Speaker 3: of fantoms coverage for us, and she recently wrote something
- 43:21Speaker 3: about this that Bump kind of got a slow start
- 43:26Speaker 3: and then was like really bringing it on and he
- 43:29Speaker 3: was looking great and it was like, oh man, when
- 43:31Speaker 3: are they going to call this guy up? But at
- 43:32Speaker 3: that time, there wasn't really a spot for him. Now
- 43:35Speaker 3: that there is a spot for him, he has kind
- 43:37Speaker 3: of cooled off over the last couple of weeks. I
- 43:39Speaker 3: don't think he's got any goals in like maybe the
- 43:41Speaker 3: last five or six games, so he's.
- 43:44Speaker 4: Definitely cooled off.
- 43:45Speaker 3: So now it's kind of like, well, is he the
- 43:46Speaker 3: guy that you want to bring up and kind of
- 43:48Speaker 3: do you want to throw him into the NHL when
- 43:50Speaker 3: he's not playing as good as he was before in
- 43:52Speaker 3: the AHL.
- 43:55Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 43:56Speaker 3: I think it'll be interesting with as long term as
- 43:58Speaker 3: this injury is, I think we're probably going to see
- 44:02Speaker 3: a few different things. Like I said, Grebengen looks like
- 44:05Speaker 3: he's going to get the first shot at this. They
- 44:08Speaker 3: called up Grunstrom from the Fantoms as well, so he'll
- 44:12Speaker 3: he'll probably get some games. See what he looks like.
- 44:15Speaker 3: You got Anthony Richard with the Fantoms, who always looks
- 44:18Speaker 3: good when he's up here. I mean, obviously he's not,
- 44:20Speaker 3: you know, a high end talent, but whenever he's in
- 44:22Speaker 3: the lineup, he does some stuff, which is great.
- 44:26Speaker 4: There's obviously Nick de Laurie is gonna factor noad.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Yeah. I was going to say, the one word that
- 44:31Speaker 1: comes to mind is you're mentioning all these players, is
- 44:34Speaker 1: the word opportunity. There's going to be the opportunity for
- 44:37Speaker 1: somebody to really take the reins here and show Rick Tacket,
- 44:40Speaker 1: show the organization what they have here. And that's what
- 44:44Speaker 1: I'm actually going to be most excited about.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Yeah, and that is that is exciting.
- 44:49Speaker 3: I mean, that is the positive thing that comes out
- 44:50Speaker 3: of injuries like this is that you know, you lose
- 44:52Speaker 3: a good player. Sure, but yeah, there are a lot
- 44:56Speaker 3: of opportunities for guys to step up.
- 44:58Speaker 4: I'm I'm hoping Grebngen does something with it.
- 45:00Speaker 3: I mean he he's obviously, again he's not a Tyson
- 45:04Speaker 3: Force or talent. But he's shown flashes that you know
- 45:08Speaker 3: that he could be an effective and fun player in
- 45:11Speaker 3: the NHL, and it's only been flashes. So it'll be
- 45:15Speaker 3: cool to see if he can maybe like on a
- 45:17Speaker 3: line with guys like Kate's and Brink who are obviously
- 45:20Speaker 3: playing very well. Maybe he can make something out of this.
- 45:23Speaker 3: I don't know, And if he doesn't, I think we're
- 45:25Speaker 3: going to see a lot of shuffling things around. I
- 45:27Speaker 3: think Riktokt's going to have to figure out what line
- 45:31Speaker 3: combinations are going to work best, what players are going
- 45:33Speaker 3: to fit and where, and uh, yeah, it's gonna be
- 45:36Speaker 3: it's gonna be a fun experience for all of us.
- 45:38Speaker 3: They want to see how this shakes out. But yeah,
- 45:40Speaker 3: you're right, opportunity is the big story here, and so
- 45:43Speaker 3: I hope someone takes the reins and kind of really
- 45:45Speaker 3: runs with this.
- 45:46Speaker 1: And we're gonna be able to see what type of
- 45:47Speaker 1: coach Ricktocket is as well in terms of this challenging situation.
- 45:51Speaker 1: We're certainly going to talk about challenging, yeah, Rick Tocket
- 45:54Speaker 1: some more, But first before doing that, a couple more
- 45:58Speaker 1: storylines to get in two and before we go to
- 46:02Speaker 1: a break. I also wanted to dive into it. There
- 46:05Speaker 1: was a really cool story over on Broadstreet Hockey dot com. Folks,
- 46:09Speaker 1: head on over there, great great piece by your colleague
- 46:13Speaker 1: Thomas Williams, who we've had on the show as well. Yeah,
- 46:17Speaker 1: just talking about three stats that are going to make
- 46:20Speaker 1: or break this Flyer season and reading over that article,
- 46:24Speaker 1: I mean, I thought he really put the nail on
- 46:26Speaker 1: the head like I or hit the nail on the head,
- 46:28Speaker 1: I should say, and those three of folks, if you
- 46:31Speaker 1: haven't read it yet again, go on over to Broadstreet
- 46:33Speaker 1: Hockey dot Com find that article Three stats that will
- 46:36Speaker 1: make or break the Flyer season, danveld Vladar's high danger
- 46:40Speaker 1: save percentage, Trevor Zegers's five on five on a shooting percentage,
- 46:46Speaker 1: and the Flyers five on five goals four percentage. So
- 46:50Speaker 1: I'm wondering, of all three of these, Kelly here, which
- 46:53Speaker 1: of these three do you think is actually the most
- 46:55Speaker 1: important from a stats perspective long term for the Flyers
- 46:59Speaker 1: this season? Why? So?
- 47:01Speaker 3: The long term addition to that question I think makes
- 47:04Speaker 3: things interesting. Okay, because if we were just talking like
- 47:08Speaker 3: in a vacuum maybe for this season, I'd probably say
- 47:11Speaker 3: it's Bladar's play because he's been such a surprise. He's
- 47:15Speaker 3: been so outstanding, and he really has I think, kept
- 47:20Speaker 3: the Flyers in games that they had no business being
- 47:23Speaker 3: in a way that we haven't seen from a goaltender
- 47:26Speaker 3: in a while. So I do think that in the
- 47:29Speaker 3: short term, the play of Dan Vladar, I think, is
- 47:32Speaker 3: what's going to keep this team kind of in the
- 47:35Speaker 3: playoff picture, especially because the offense has been kind of inconsistent.
- 47:41Speaker 3: But long term, I think that Zegris, I mean, you
- 47:44Speaker 3: gotta go with Migris because he is he has the
- 47:47Speaker 3: potential to be such a cornerstone of this rebuild.
- 47:52Speaker 1: Yeah we're seeing it, Yeah.
- 47:53Speaker 4: Exactly that if he can keep it up.
- 47:55Speaker 3: And I think his shooting percentage right now is something ridiculous,
- 47:58Speaker 3: Like I think it's like thirteen or something like. It's
- 48:02Speaker 3: don't don't quote me, no fact check that, but I
- 48:06Speaker 3: do think it's like unsustainably high. I should have looked
- 48:09Speaker 3: before we started, but I think it's probably a little
- 48:13Speaker 3: bit unsustainably high right now. So I mean, you can
- 48:16Speaker 3: never expect a player, I think, to consistently shoot eleven, twelve,
- 48:19Speaker 3: thirteen percent, Like that's just crazy. But long term, we
- 48:23Speaker 3: need him to be an elite level goal scorer in
- 48:27Speaker 3: the NHL, Like we need him to be this guy,
- 48:31Speaker 3: and so far he's really been delivering, and I think
- 48:35Speaker 3: what was promised. It's it's kind of like it's one
- 48:38Speaker 3: of those things where it's been so rare for us
- 48:41Speaker 3: as Flyers fans to get these kinds of wins where
- 48:44Speaker 3: it's like, for I feel like, for like two or
- 48:46Speaker 3: three years, Flyers fans have been like, we should get
- 48:48Speaker 3: Trevor secrets. Why don't they like Trevor's secres, We should
- 48:51Speaker 3: get Trevor' segress, Like, why don't we get him, Like
- 48:53Speaker 3: we should totally get him, that would work. And then
- 48:55Speaker 3: they got him, and they got him for practically nothing, right,
- 48:58Speaker 3: and then you're like, this is the kind of thing
- 49:00Speaker 3: where it's like, oh God, remember when we got Ryan
- 49:02Speaker 3: Ellis turned nothing?
- 49:03Speaker 4: How'd that turn off?
- 49:04Speaker 1: Rights?
- 49:04Speaker 4: Not great?
- 49:05Speaker 3: So it's like one of those things where you're just
- 49:07Speaker 3: waiting for the other shoe to drop, because that's what
- 49:09Speaker 3: always happens to us. But so far, he's just like
- 49:12Speaker 3: looked as Trevor Zegris's advertised, like he just looks great, yes,
- 49:16Speaker 3: And that I think is something that the Flyers really
- 49:19Speaker 3: need to be sustainable long term if this rebuild the
- 49:24Speaker 3: way that they're doing it is going to work.
- 49:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's a fantastic take, and I would
- 49:30Speaker 1: agree with you on that. Of all three of those
- 49:33Speaker 1: stats that William wrote in his article, definitely that's the
- 49:37Speaker 1: at the top. Trevor Ziegriss, So really quick, folks, going
- 49:40Speaker 1: to take a quick break, and when we get back,
- 49:42Speaker 1: we're going to dive into some more Flyers talk. We'll
- 49:44Speaker 1: be back in just a bit. All right, we are
- 49:48Speaker 1: back with our good friend Kelly Hinkle from Broadstreet Hockey
- 49:52Speaker 1: dot Com. I'm a subscriber head on over there. They
- 49:54Speaker 1: have fantastic content. Now as we're moving along here, Kelly,
- 49:58Speaker 1: a two part question for you. The first is, you know,
- 50:01Speaker 1: I think we've seen some surprises so far this season,
- 50:04Speaker 1: but I'm wondering which player on this Flyers team has
- 50:07Speaker 1: really been the most surprising for you. As we're starting
- 50:11Speaker 1: December here, we're really starting to see some things come
- 50:14Speaker 1: together for this team. Who's been the most surprising for
- 50:17Speaker 1: you so far?
- 50:19Speaker 4: Vladar?
- 50:20Speaker 3: Like, I don't want to repeat myself, but but yes,
- 50:22Speaker 3: absolute here's the thing, like getting going into the season,
- 50:27Speaker 3: the biggest question mark was goaltending. We had no idea
- 50:29Speaker 3: what this was going to look like. Sam Yerson was
- 50:31Speaker 3: not great last season. Yeah, Dan Vladar you know, was
- 50:35Speaker 3: a backup pretty much in Calgary on a team that
- 50:38Speaker 3: wasn't very good, and his numbers weren't, you know, anything outstanding.
- 50:43Speaker 3: This could have gone a million different ways, could have
- 50:46Speaker 3: this could have been just as bad as last season. Yeah,
- 50:49Speaker 3: And I don't think anyone would have been surprised. But
- 50:52Speaker 3: he has been legitimately really freaking good, like just making
- 50:58Speaker 3: like lights out safe. It was, like I said before,
- 51:00Speaker 3: keeping the Flyers in games that they have no business
- 51:02Speaker 3: being and like and I think it's pretty clear that
- 51:05Speaker 3: the team when he's in that the team seems to
- 51:07Speaker 3: play I think a little better in front of him
- 51:09Speaker 3: because they trust that he's going to make the save
- 51:12Speaker 3: when they need him to. And it's not at all
- 51:17Speaker 3: what I expected to see from like Damn Latar. I
- 51:20Speaker 3: think a lot of people when the Flyers got him
- 51:22Speaker 3: were like, like, why would you, like, why is this
- 51:25Speaker 3: the route that we're going we need to?
- 51:31Speaker 4: All? Right? Like I guess, but.
- 51:34Speaker 3: He's been like I think that like best case scenario
- 51:38Speaker 3: in my mind heading into the season was like, all right,
- 51:40Speaker 3: they'll be like league average, it'll be better than last season.
- 51:43Speaker 3: It won't be a disaster, it'll be fine. Whatever he's been,
- 51:46Speaker 3: he's been legitimately good.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Legitimately good, really needs.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Exactly and it's been so fun to watch, and it like.
- 51:55Speaker 3: It really makes games more enjoyable because I think last season,
- 52:00Speaker 3: every single time the puck went the other way, you're like, ooh,
- 52:04Speaker 3: like what's gonna happen?
- 52:05Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 52:06Speaker 3: Like, I feel like every shot on goal last season
- 52:08Speaker 3: had the potential.
- 52:09Speaker 1: Of going in, yeah, yep.
- 52:10Speaker 3: And this season it's like now like Fladar's got it.
- 52:15Speaker 3: Like every start that he has, I'm expecting that the
- 52:17Speaker 3: team's gonna win because he's been so good and it's
- 52:19Speaker 3: it's not at all what I expected. I would be
- 52:22Speaker 3: surprised if anyone expected this from Dan Vladar, including Danny Brier, Like,
- 52:26Speaker 3: I really can't expect that they thought.
- 52:28Speaker 4: That he was going to be this good. But it's
- 52:30Speaker 4: been a great surprise and it's been a lot of
- 52:31Speaker 4: fun to watch.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Absolutely well. On the flip side of that, we've also
- 52:35Speaker 1: been frustrated with certain players on this team. You know,
- 52:39Speaker 1: you know, we week by week, you know, and and
- 52:42Speaker 1: some players may be more frustrated with them longer term.
- 52:46Speaker 1: So I'm wondering which player, in your opinion, desperately needs
- 52:50Speaker 1: to start stepping up since they've been a disappointment thus far.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Who's that player for you?
- 52:57Speaker 3: So this is kind of interesting because like, at different
- 52:59Speaker 3: points during this season, I would have had really easy
- 53:02Speaker 3: answers for this question. Like at one point, the easy
- 53:06Speaker 3: answer would have been Owen Tippet. At one point, the
- 53:08Speaker 3: easy answer would have been Matvey Mitchkoff. Yeah, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 3: Travis Knnectney I think could have fit in there at
- 53:15Speaker 3: some points during the season.
- 53:16Speaker 4: And honestly, like the connecting thing.
- 53:18Speaker 3: Is weird because even though his numbers aren't bad and
- 53:22Speaker 3: they've been better lately than they had been over the
- 53:24Speaker 3: course of the early part of the season, Like his
- 53:28Speaker 3: points total is like not bad. When you look at
- 53:30Speaker 3: the box sets, it doesn't look like he's having a
- 53:32Speaker 3: bad season. But for whatever reason, when I watched Travis
- 53:34Speaker 3: kdecty this season, I'm like, the field, what's.
- 53:37Speaker 4: Going on with them? Like, yeah, the vibe is not
- 53:39Speaker 4: is not what it?
- 53:40Speaker 3: I don't know if it's like the swagger that we're
- 53:43Speaker 3: used to seeing from him, Like the confidence is not
- 53:46Speaker 3: doesn't seem to be the same. Like it's just like
- 53:47Speaker 3: watching him feel different. And for some reason, despite the
- 53:52Speaker 3: fact that the numbers aren't terrible, I watched Travis connecting
- 53:57Speaker 3: and I'm like, dude, i't want more from you, Like
- 53:58Speaker 3: you're supposed to be one of this team his best players.
- 54:01Speaker 3: I need you to look like one of the team's
- 54:04Speaker 3: best players, you know what I mean. Like, I don't
- 54:05Speaker 3: need you to just have good box stats because you're
- 54:08Speaker 3: getting assists, right, which obviously is important, Like obviously making
- 54:12Speaker 3: plays to get to goals of important, obviously, But like
- 54:15Speaker 3: I want to watch Travis Knnecty like I did last
- 54:18Speaker 3: season and think, this guy's really really good. He is
- 54:22Speaker 3: one of the best players on the team. This contract
- 54:24Speaker 3: is great, We're gonna be able to depend on him forever.
- 54:27Speaker 3: And for some reason, this season, I just don't I
- 54:29Speaker 3: don't feel that way, and I don't think it's just me.
- 54:33Speaker 1: It's not because the vibes are important. But when we
- 54:35Speaker 1: watch sports, I mean, it doesn't even matter if it's hockey,
- 54:38Speaker 1: any sport. A guy can put up the stats, the
- 54:40Speaker 1: box score can look great, but if you're not getting
- 54:42Speaker 1: the vibes from him, then yeah, then there's something there.
- 54:45Speaker 1: I mean, just case in point. You know a lot
- 54:47Speaker 1: of us watching the Philadelphia Eagles right now, Jalen Hurts
- 54:50Speaker 1: is putting up some really good numbers in a lot
- 54:52Speaker 1: of different ways, but you know what, we're not feeling it.
- 54:54Speaker 1: We don't have the vibues. We don't have those great
- 54:56Speaker 1: vibes right now, even though he's putting on a damn
- 54:59Speaker 1: good clinic as a quarterback in the NFL this season,
- 55:01Speaker 1: it's just it's not the it's not the best vibe situation.
- 55:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 55:05Speaker 3: So so I would say right now, there's no one
- 55:10Speaker 3: that I'm looking at and like, buddy, you got to
- 55:11Speaker 3: do better. I mean, like Sam Marrison could be better.
- 55:15Speaker 3: But like, to be quite honest with you, I don't
- 55:16Speaker 3: expect Sam Marrison to be better at this point. Yeah,
- 55:19Speaker 3: I think he is what he is. Mietchkof is looking
- 55:23Speaker 3: gright now, so I know quarrels with him at the moment.
- 55:26Speaker 3: Although he could probably stop taking so many stupid penalties.
- 55:30Speaker 4: Yes, that's probably something he could work on.
- 55:34Speaker 3: But yeah, I just I want to see Travis Connecty
- 55:36Speaker 3: look like the Travis Connecty that we saw last season
- 55:39Speaker 3: when he was on pace to be like one hundred
- 55:40Speaker 3: point player and kind of just like find that confidence
- 55:44Speaker 3: and that swagger and that kind of leadership vibe that
- 55:48Speaker 3: we were getting from him. I want to see that
- 55:51Speaker 3: because you know, we're stuck, for better or for worse,
- 55:54Speaker 3: We're probably stuck with Travis Connectey. Yeah, for the probably
- 55:59Speaker 3: the length of this contract really clear, I had to
- 56:02Speaker 3: be one of the best guys.
- 56:03Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, I was gonna say, what's interesting about this topic?
- 56:06Speaker 1: When I put this on the agenda for us, my
- 56:08Speaker 1: thoughts were I would have expected, say, three four months ago,
- 56:12Speaker 1: that with this particular topic, we would have said a
- 56:14Speaker 1: defensive player or we would have said something with regard
- 56:17Speaker 1: to the defense. And guess what, Yes, Nope, not at all.
- 56:21Speaker 1: And again that may go to, like, what is some
- 56:23Speaker 1: of the most surprising this season, back to our prior topic,
- 56:27Speaker 1: is the fact that the defense has stepped up in
- 56:30Speaker 1: so many ways this year. The fact that we didn't
- 56:33Speaker 1: mention a defensive player at all during this disappointing segment
- 56:37Speaker 1: here really says a lot about where this team is
- 56:39Speaker 1: at defensively.
- 56:40Speaker 4: Yeah, and I'm sure that.
- 56:41Speaker 3: This is something that we talked about before this season.
- 56:43Speaker 3: But like, looking at this roster on paper heading into
- 56:46Speaker 3: the season, it was like, all right, offense looks pretty good,
- 56:50Speaker 3: nothing to worry about. Their defense, Ooh, that's going to
- 56:53Speaker 3: be a disaster. Goaltending, Oh god, I don't know what
- 56:55Speaker 3: that's going to be. And the defense and the goaltending
- 56:57Speaker 3: have been two of the most like they've been most
- 57:00Speaker 3: reliable parts of this team. It's been the offense that's
- 57:03Speaker 3: been kind of like wishy washy and the guys that
- 57:05Speaker 3: you want a little bit more from. So yeah, you're right,
- 57:07Speaker 3: like I would have expected to be like, you know,
- 57:12Speaker 3: I need more from Nick Steeler or whatever.
- 57:14Speaker 4: But like the defense has looked.
- 57:16Speaker 3: The defense has looked way better than I would have
- 57:19Speaker 3: expected at the start of the season.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Yes, I'll tell you right now, good vibes in this
- 57:22Speaker 1: interview and discussion right now, we really do. But that
- 57:25Speaker 1: may change in just a second, folks, because before we
- 57:28Speaker 1: let Kelly go, you know, we got to talk about
- 57:30Speaker 1: Rick tocket his coaching, his early coaching tenure here as
- 57:35Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Flyers head coach. I mean, I think we
- 57:37Speaker 1: are all very glad that John Tortorella isn't coaching this team. Anymore.
- 57:41Speaker 1: I think we can all say that with some certainty.
- 57:44Speaker 1: But we have been seeing the ups and downs with
- 57:46Speaker 1: Rick Tockett here, and I guess piggybacking off what you
- 57:49Speaker 1: were saying at the top of our discussion, Kelly, you know,
- 57:53Speaker 1: there are some interesting decisions at times that he makes,
- 57:56Speaker 1: some that I know a lot of us in Flyers
- 57:59Speaker 1: Nation are like, what the hell's going on? What are
- 58:01Speaker 1: you doing? Wondering how the relationship is going with certain players?
- 58:05Speaker 1: So I'm wondering what grade would you give Rick tocket
- 58:08Speaker 1: thus far during his short tenure as a Flyers head coach,
- 58:11Speaker 1: and why.
- 58:13Speaker 3: I'm going to go, I'm going to be generous and
- 58:18Speaker 3: I'm going to ignore my instincts here.
- 58:22Speaker 4: I'm gonna say I'm going to say C plus.
- 58:25Speaker 1: Okay, all right, I think.
- 58:27Speaker 3: The team is on the whole, the team is performing well.
- 58:35Speaker 3: They're you know, not in a playoff spot, but they're
- 58:38Speaker 3: not at the bottom of the league like they're not,
- 58:41Speaker 3: you know, bottom dwellers.
- 58:43Speaker 4: There is you know, a chance that.
- 58:46Speaker 3: They could be fighting for a wild card spot maybe,
- 58:50Speaker 3: so you know, like the results have improved. It would
- 58:54Speaker 3: seem that, as you said, the vibes the vibes seem
- 58:57Speaker 3: to be better. I'm sure that the players like playing
- 58:59Speaker 3: for Rick more than they liked playing for John Tortorella.
- 59:02Speaker 3: It's very clear that at d end of last season,
- 59:04Speaker 3: whatever was going on there had turned into a disaster
- 59:07Speaker 3: and it was completely untenable.
- 59:08Speaker 4: So that part's good.
- 59:12Speaker 3: Like I said at the start, there were some interviews
- 59:14Speaker 3: that Tackett gave before the season started that may it
- 59:18Speaker 3: seem like.
- 59:20Speaker 4: He is like that.
- 59:21Speaker 3: Progressive new school hockey coach that you know, takes a
- 59:29Speaker 3: guy like Quinn Hughes and lets him, you know, do
- 59:32Speaker 3: whatever he's gonna do because he's that guy, and you're
- 59:35Speaker 3: gonna let him maximize his talent. So far, I think
- 59:42Speaker 3: Rick Tackett has coached this team kind of like John Tortorella,
- 59:50Speaker 3: minus the mean part, you know what I mean. Like
- 59:52Speaker 3: the player usage hasn't been that different. When Mietskov was struggling,
- 59:58Speaker 3: you know, Talkott was in fun of Michael Phone saying like, yeah, guy,
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: like that's got to play through it, Like he's got
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: to play himself out of this. But then he's getting
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: ten eleven minutes a night, he's getting very little power playtime,
- 1:00:10Speaker 3: Like you're not putting him with Zegris, Like there was
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: just a lot of choices where it's like, yeah, Mitchkov
- 1:00:16Speaker 3: doesn't look great, but also he's the most important player
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: on this team. Yes, he's one hundred percent got to
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: turn into the best version of Matvey Mishkoff.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: If this is gonna work at all.
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: If he doesn't, if he just turns out to be
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: like a middling guy, that's it.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: Like Rebuilt didn't work, It's it's done. We didn't do
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: it right.
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: He's got to be great. And I do feel like
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: sometimes you do have to give those guys treatment that
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: you wouldn't give other players, Like, Okay, yeah, I if
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: Noah Kate starts struggling, you're probably gonna cut his ice
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: time down a little bit. You're not gonna give him
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: the kind of matchups that you're giving him now. You're
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: not going to give him the opportunities that you're giving
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: him now when he's playing really well. Totally fine, get that.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: Ye A guy like Meetchkoff, Like, while you don't want
- 1:01:03Speaker 3: him out on the ice hurting the team actively, I
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: think that the calculus has to be guy like meetchkof
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: Ziegris for serve before he got hurt, like, these guys
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: need to be cornerstones of this team. They have to
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: be the best versions of themselves. And I think that
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: my biggest issue with Rip Tocket is that he has
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: decided that the overall goal with this team is winning
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: hockey games.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Yep, yep.
- 1:01:34Speaker 4: Obviously that's important. We're not going to pretend that it's
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: not important.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: Right, Obviously, winning hockey games means that mostly your guys
- 1:01:41Speaker 3: are playing well. That's probably good. However, I think that
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: that should be like the one B goal and the
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: one A goal needs to be making these players that
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: are the most important part of Danny Brier's rebuild. We
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: have to make them into the best versions of themselves.
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: And I worry that with Rick Tackett that's going to
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: be secondary or even like third on the list of
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: most important things. He wants players to He wants to
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: win hockey games, he wants players to play the right way,
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: and I just worry that, Like, I don't think he's
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: going let me be clear, I don't think he's going
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: to like Ruin Matvig Mitchkov. I don't think that he's
- 1:02:24Speaker 3: going to somehow turn him into a crappy hockey player.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: But I do think that if the focus.
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: Is on winning games, and you have decided that since
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: you won six games with Nick Delaoie in the lineup,
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: that means you got to have Nick Delaurie and I
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: obviously we win games when he's playing, so we got
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: to play a guy like that stuff.
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: Yeah, those kinds of choices.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: It's just like I don't know, or like, you know,
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: we were winning games when Mieachkof was getting twelve minutes,
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: and so maybe we cut him down a little bit
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: because you know, things were going better before. Like those
- 1:02:58Speaker 3: kinds of choices. I just think, aren't that long term
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: for this team. Yeah, And that's the kind of thing
- 1:03:03Speaker 3: that worries me, is that I worry that, like, not
- 1:03:07Speaker 3: that he's going to ruin guys, but that we're not
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: going to get the absolute best version of them that
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: we might be able to if the focus was on
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: development and not on winning.
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: And so don't you think. I do think Danny Brier though,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: has that in mind. Also, I don't know why I
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: think enough, I don't know. I mean, we're not there,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: we're not in the room, you know, we're not in
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: these discussions at all. But part of me has this
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: trust level already for Danny Brier based on various decisions.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Right where I do, Yeah for sure, Yeah where I
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: don't think Danny brierre is gonna let that happen. I
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: think what you're saying is absolutely fair. I absolutely do,
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: because it's what we're seeing. It is what we are seeing.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: But I wonder if it gets to a point we
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: don't have a crystal ball where Danny Brier says, no,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: the development of these guys, these particular guys, this guy,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: this guy, this guy is more important than the ice time,
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: is more important than any type of metric or stat
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: that we can produce that says we're gonna win games.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: So that's just my thought. I don't know what you
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: think about that.
- 1:04:13Speaker 3: So, like, that's something that in the back of my
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: mind I think too, like like Breer is never gonna
- 1:04:18Speaker 3: let this happen.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: But like, this is something I've talked about with.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: Charlie on the phlipod from time to time. Is like so,
- 1:04:26Speaker 3: and it's specifically with regards to Vigras playing center or
- 1:04:29Speaker 3: not playing center, really right, because I do think that
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: when Danny Brier targeted Trevor Ziegras and took the chance
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: on bringing him over from an Anaheim obvious. I think
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: it's pretty obvious that, like the calculation was, Okay, maybe
- 1:04:48Speaker 3: we can steal ourselves a one ce, Like maybe we
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: can get super lucky here and find a guy that
- 1:04:56Speaker 3: has kind of lost the trust of the idiot coach
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: in californ for some reason.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: They don't like him.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: They're not playing him the center, but like we've seen
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: what he can do at center and it's pretty remarkable.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: Maybe we can get him back there.
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: I thought to myself going into this season, like we're
- 1:05:14Speaker 3: gonna see Trevor's nigres get every opportunity to make it
- 1:05:17Speaker 3: as a center, because that's really important. Like they got
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: him because they need a top end center and they
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: don't have one. They need him to be that guy.
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: But so far this season, it seems like Danny Brier
- 1:05:29Speaker 3: is perfectly fine with Rick Tucket deciding.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Good point, Nah, he's a winger.
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and like if we've decided, like and it seemed
- 1:05:37Speaker 3: like that was a decision that Tuckett made like three
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: games into the season, it was like, no, we're not
- 1:05:41Speaker 3: doing Trevor' segress at center anymore. Yeah, And it's like,
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: but how are we ever gonna know if he can
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: be a center. If we're not playing him at center,
- 1:05:48Speaker 3: how are we ever going to know if he can
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: grow into being a top end center again, if he
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: can bring back what we saw from him in his
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: first couple of seasons in the league, if we're not
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: doing it. And it's like that is the part that
- 1:06:00Speaker 3: worries me, or it's like have have have Jones and
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Breer decided that like, yeah, you know what, winning games
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: is important. It's important for these kids to learn how
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: to win. It's important for them to learn how to,
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: you know, play the right way. It's important for them
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: to be competing for playoff spots. And like, I agree
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: that all those things important are important, but I would
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: have liked to see that be the goal next season.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, and the.
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: Season after this season.
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: I still expected it to be if we make the playoffs,
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: that's cool, Like fun, bonus doesn't matter.
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: You want development, you just we're developing these guys.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: And it's the Zegers at wing thing. Is that is
- 1:06:38Speaker 3: the one that really gets me. Or it's like, Okay,
- 1:06:40Speaker 3: we're nearly a third of the way into the season
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: and Danny Breer very clearly hasn't set Rick talked it
- 1:06:47Speaker 3: down and been like, hey, Bud, we need you to
- 1:06:49Speaker 3: play this guy at center because we have to know
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: if he can do it or not. Right right, they
- 1:06:53Speaker 3: seem to be fine letting him play wing to freaking Divorak.
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: Yeah, like no, it's not like he's a song.
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: He's good at face off like that's great and all,
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: but like he's not a high end talent. Like, let's
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: not kid ourselves into thinking right, right, Christian Moorak is
- 1:07:09Speaker 3: going to somehow turn Trevor Zegres into something like that's
- 1:07:12Speaker 3: not going to happen.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: I just worry that the focus on winning is going
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: to stifle guys more than they would be stifled under
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: different circumstances. And that's really what worries me.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: All right, folks. C plus from Kelly Hankel for Rick
