SPEAKER_00: Before an athlete ever wins on or off the court or the track, the victory must first happen where?
• 2:20
  SPEAKER_00: In the mind.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_00: They have to see it to believe it.
• 2:23
SPEAKER_00: They have to prepare for it and then work relentlessly to actually achieve it.
• 2:27
SPEAKER_00: Today we're gonna discuss how coaching goes far beyond teaching plays, improving speed, or winning, even winning championships.
• 2:36
SPEAKER_00: Great coaching develops confidence, discipline, perseverance, character, and belief.
• 2:42
SPEAKER_00: We're also going to connect modern athletic performance with ancient wisdom, the understanding that mastering your thoughts, emotions, and habits, and even your actions is the foundation of mastering your life.
• 2:57
SPEAKER_00: So today I have a great guest coming on with me.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_00: And his name is Ian Jennings.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_00: How are you doing, Ian?
• 3:03
  SPEAKER_00: I'm doing great, man.
• 3:04
SPEAKER_00: It's great to see you as always.
• 3:06
SPEAKER_00: Hey, man, I'm glad we were able to finally make this happen.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_00: And it's an honor to have you on the podcast.
• 3:11
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, I'm I'm thrilled.
• 3:13
SPEAKER_06: I've I've been excited since we, you know, talked about it on the on the cruise on the Nile back in in Egypt in was that 2024.
• 3:21
SPEAKER_06: So yeah, looking forward to this for a couple years now.
• 3:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's been a good minute, man.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: Tell me one little bit about yourself and and who you are and and what you do.
• 3:30
  SPEAKER_06: Sure.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_06: So um I'm a track and field coach.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_06: Um I coach at uh Cal Poly Pomona, which is a Division II school here in uh Southern California.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_06: I've been coaching here for four years.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_06: Um prior to that, I've coached at the community college level for uh about 14 years.
• 3:47
SPEAKER_06: Uh, also coached at the NAI division for five years, um, done the high school for uh three, four years.
• 3:55
SPEAKER_06: Um I've coached professional athletes, you know, from that play in the NFL to working with um Olympic athletes in in track and field, um, like Will Clay and Chris Bernard, um, to name a couple.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_06: And and not that I was like coaching them specifically, but like my mentor was their coach.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_06: And so I got to work kind of side by side with him and just really um gain that kind of Olympic level experience.
• 4:19
SPEAKER_06: And um so yeah, had a had of had a lot of success throughout the, you know, throughout my journey from uh high school state champions to you know community college all Americans.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_06: And um I've had two division two, sorry, two national champions at the NEIA division, and then I've had um, let me see, four athletes uh reach uh achieve multiple all-American honors at the division two level.
• 4:45
SPEAKER_06: So um been blessed, but uh still hungry for more.
• 4:50
SPEAKER_00: Man, that that's amazing, man.
• 4:52
  SPEAKER_00: You are the definition.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: When you when you look up coach in a dictionary, your face should be next to the word, man.
• 4:58
  SPEAKER_06: Maybe one day, yeah.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_06: I feel like I still got a long way to go, but but it's it's been an amazing journey and and it's different every time, you know, working with different athletes, you know, poses different challenges.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_06: And so it's something that obviously I really enjoy.
• 5:12
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, no, no doubt, man.
• 5:13
SPEAKER_00: Coaching is a is a real blessing, you know.
• 5:16
SPEAKER_00: Um, you know I was a coach as well.
• 5:19
SPEAKER_00: And I didn't do it, I didn't coach as extensively as you have, but I did coach initially uh volunteering at the YMCA and you know starting some sports programs at my local YMCA, and then uh kind of coaching those kids all the way up from grade school through middle school, even into high school, and uh eventually, you know, coaching AAU and elite AAU ball teams and uh UAASA and even junior Olympics and you know had a lot of great success with about an 80% win rate on average.
• 5:49
SPEAKER_00: Uh, we did pretty good.
• 5:50
SPEAKER_00: That was in girls' basketball.
• 5:52
SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, the greatest thing about girls basketball, if you can get them to buy into playing defense and doing that diamond press, you make a lot of layups.
• 6:02
  SPEAKER_06: Right.
• 6:03
SPEAKER_06: So I think that's also one one thing that really kind of you know drew me to you.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_06: Like when I, you know, I found you on uh social media, like I don't know, maybe 2015, 2016, somewhere on there.
• 6:15
SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, the not only like you know, my interest in like um, you know, uh ancient civilizations and and things like that, and you know, trying to grow like you know, um, as a person in spirituality and things like that.
• 6:28
SPEAKER_06: Once I kind of like heard your background about being uh uh a basketball coach, because basketball is my first first love.
• 6:34
SPEAKER_06: Um, and so I was like, oh, there's another um, there's another reason why I like this guy.
• 6:40
  SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
• 6:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, we gotta hit it off.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_00: We're on the same frequency, you know.
• 6:44
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 6:44
SPEAKER_00: Uh and you know, it was really great to to meet you actually on that cruise.
• 6:49
SPEAKER_00: We were actually in Egypt.
• 6:50
SPEAKER_00: I mean, you came on my tour, you came on my 2024 Forbidden Tour of Egypt, you and your wife.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, we kind of just uh really lunk linked up on the top deck, the over there top deck on the now cruise when we really had some time to really just you know sit and talk and vibe and uh and we really laughed and we had a lot of there was some some funny conversation.
• 7:13
SPEAKER_00: We can't repeat these conversations.
• 7:15
SPEAKER_06: That's a whole nother uh whole nother podcast.
• 7:18
  SPEAKER_00: Whole nother podcast.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_00: We really uh bonded and had some great, great laughs and a great time on that entire cruise.
• 7:25
SPEAKER_00: It was a it was a great tour.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_00: It was a I think it was a 12-day tour that year, right?
• 7:28
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh it's like I I don't even know that I can really truly put it into words what um the experience that that you know that Forbidden Knowledge like created for us, and and shout out to um Mohammed Ibrahim, right?
• 7:45
SPEAKER_06: Uh from Saba Tours, like um you guys just absolutely knock that out the park.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_06: And so yeah, we could go off on a whole another two hours about that.
• 7:55
  SPEAKER_00: I know, yeah, it was a mind-bending tour.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_00: What's great about those tours is they give us, you know, an additional perspective on and wisdom and understanding, and even understanding the blessings that we have, you know, when you travel to other countries that maybe are really listed as actual true third world countries, you get to see what that really means.
• 8:14
SPEAKER_00: And and sometimes you see fourth world countries or fourth world civil, you know, uh level civilization.
• 8:19
SPEAKER_00: And then you come back with a new level of um uh of uh understanding of gratitude for you know what we have over here, right?
• 8:27
  SPEAKER_00: It's incredible.
• 8:27
  SPEAKER_06: 100%.
• 8:28
  SPEAKER_06: Yep.
• 8:29
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, man.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_00: Now, when uh back to coaching a little bit, what was it that got you into coaching?
• 8:37
  SPEAKER_06: You know what?
• 8:38
SPEAKER_06: So I never intended to be a coach, but um I've been throughout my own athletic journey um through high school and college, like I've been blessed with amazing coaches.
• 8:49
SPEAKER_06: Um and when I I so I attended Cal State Fullerton when I was in college and had the the absolute pleasure of having the world record holder Mike Powell um as my coach in college.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_06: And you know, shout out to Mike.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_06: Um he and I are still great friends to this day.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_06: We talk regularly, but um, I think it was everything that he kind of like instilled in me um as an athlete.
• 9:11
SPEAKER_06: When I bumped into a high school teammate at the grocery store one time who asked me, like, hey, you know, would you be interested in coming back to our old high school and helping out our jumpers?
• 9:18
SPEAKER_06: Because we don't have anybody.
• 9:19
SPEAKER_06: And I was like, you know what?
• 9:21
  SPEAKER_06: I've I've learned a lot throughout my career.
• 9:23
SPEAKER_06: Let me go, let me go give it a shot.
• 9:26
SPEAKER_06: And so I did and and just kind of like instantly fell in love with it.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_06: Um that was what 20 almost 22 years ago now.
• 9:34
SPEAKER_06: So um yeah, so that's basically how I got started.
• 9:39
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, amazing.
• 9:40
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, how I got into coaching was um uh my oldest son, who's now 35 at the time, I think he was 13.
• 9:48
SPEAKER_00: He got into an AAU team and uh I put him on this team.
• 9:52
SPEAKER_00: And this the coach, the head coach was started getting real busy with his company and needed some assistance and needed some help.
• 9:59
SPEAKER_00: So I decided to volunteer to help out and be an assistant coach with them, you know.
• 10:03
SPEAKER_00: So for the days he couldn't show up, and eventually I ended up sitting on the bench, you know, the you know the word how it happens, you just gotta roll right into the job.
• 10:12
SPEAKER_00: And then one day I was practicing with the team, the boys.
• 10:15
SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, the boys are hard-headed because they always try to go off athleticism, not off of like real tactical understanding of the the basketball IQ, needed to execute a play.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and my daughter was there, my my oldest daughter at the time, April, she was there and she didn't play any sport at all.
• 10:32
SPEAKER_00: I think she was in the sixth grade, but she went on to the side court, and this other girl, I never forget her name was Fabiola, hard to forget that name.
• 10:41
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 10:42
SPEAKER_00: And she ended up playing D1 at Illinois.
• 10:44
SPEAKER_00: I think she went uh pro.
• 10:46
SPEAKER_00: But Fabiola was playing against my daughter, they were about the same age, and Fabiola did some kind of move and crossed over my daughter, and she fell down, like the literal break your ankle.
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_00: And my daughter came over to me and said, I want you to teach me how to play basketball now.
• 11:03
SPEAKER_00: So I started working with her, and I noticed that the the girls like they'll do anything you tell them to do because they're not gonna jump over somebody, you know, right, and uh they'll execute plays and so forth.
• 11:15
SPEAKER_00: I started working and training her, she became really good really fast.
• 11:20
SPEAKER_00: And then uh I just kind of you know maneuvered into girls' basketball and uh created some programs in South Florida.
• 11:27
SPEAKER_00: And long story short, you know, we we did great numbers, a lot of great victories, a lot of great championships, and um uh made it to states in 2000 uh 2009, I think it was, okay in the state of Florida.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_00: Uh a lot of uh tournament championships and a lot of gold medals, and she was ranked 95th in the nation by ESPN Hoop Girls for the shooting guard, 95th in the nation out of 500,000 girls, right?
• 11:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, that was all American, you know.
• 11:57
  SPEAKER_06: That's that's incredible.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_00: So I put my energy into the right direction, right?
• 12:02
SPEAKER_00: She ended up uh getting 30 offers by the time she was in the 11th grade.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_00: Wow, yeah, from all D1.
• 12:08
  SPEAKER_00: So that was great.
• 12:09
SPEAKER_00: But that's how I got into it, man.
• 12:11
SPEAKER_00: But one thing I know with coaching is you have to you begin to become a psychiatrist and a psychologist, you know?
• 12:18
  SPEAKER_00: Boy.
• 12:18
SPEAKER_00: So when did you realize that coaching was more about um understanding the psychology on how to handle and deal with each individual player versus just yelling at him and screaming at him and worrying worrying about winning?
• 12:32
SPEAKER_06: Um well, I've never been the the like yelling and screaming like in your face rah-rah coach.
• 12:39
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, me neither.
• 12:40
SPEAKER_06: It was it, my I guess my style is more like um I want to, you know, I want to create a like a fun environment because it I've always had a fun environment.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_06: And I feel like if the athletes are really enjoying being there and in pra at practice, then enjoying the process, then you know you kind of see improvements at a much faster rate.
• 13:01
SPEAKER_06: Um, but I think in terms of like the psychology of it, um, because I started off coaching at the high school for four years, and then when I shifted to community college level, that's where like I started to um notice that like I'm getting athletes from all different kinds of backgrounds and and um you know upbringings and and you know, from single family homes to to the you know the I guess the wealthier families and the you know anything in between, right?
• 13:29
SPEAKER_06: And so um, you know, like I had to like learn to try to like re relate to each athlete differently.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_06: And so, you know, I never took any psychology classes in in college, but I'm sure if I go right now, like I could pass whatever exams and get my certificate, um, especially doing it for this long, you know, it's it's just because like um I had to, I understood that I had to learn how to um uh each person like thinks differently based on their backgrounds and their experiences and their upbringing.
• 14:05
SPEAKER_06: So, how do I get myself to um tap in or align myself with you know the frequency that they're on um so that I can I can speak their language and they can understand it.
• 14:17
SPEAKER_06: And then we see the results that you know both myself and the athletes are are looking for.
• 14:22
SPEAKER_06: And so, you know, a lot of trial and error for sure.
• 14:25
SPEAKER_06: Um uh and then just you know, over the years, just got better and better at it because I got more experience, you know, working with a bunch of different individuals.
• 14:35
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely, man.
• 14:36
SPEAKER_00: I can understand that totally.
• 14:37
SPEAKER_00: You have to reach each player where they are, right?
• 14:40
SPEAKER_00: So you have to really understand.
• 14:42
SPEAKER_00: I remember when I was coaching certain players, I can give them a little extra hard push because they needed that.
• 14:47
SPEAKER_00: They didn't the soft touch didn't really work too well with them, even though I didn't curse or scream, I just had to give them that aggressive like, hey, you you out of your position, you know?
• 14:55
  SPEAKER_00: Right, right, right.
• 14:55
SPEAKER_00: And then certain players, you got to be very gentle and soft because they're very delicate.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_00: They might have had some trauma at home, they might have been abused, you don't know what it is, but you can tell that as soon as you come down on them a little bit too much, they fold.
• 15:07
  SPEAKER_06: Right.
• 15:08
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, being yeah, being being gentle brings up their confidence, right?
• 15:11
SPEAKER_00: So this whole juggle you have to do.
• 15:14
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's it's definitely um, especially when you're you know, you work with an athlete, you know, the first couple of you know, training sessions or practices, whatever, um, is there's definitely that that learning curve.
• 15:25
SPEAKER_06: Um, I remember one specific example, I was working with a female athlete at the community college, and like, and I think we were at a we were at a track meet, and you know, she um she did her jump and and came over.
• 15:38
SPEAKER_06: And like um, I you know how like sometimes coaches, you know, you put your hand on their shoulder and and just kind of like talk to them.
• 15:43
SPEAKER_06: I I touched her shoulder lightly and she like jumped.
• 15:47
SPEAKER_06: And and instantly I was like, oh, she's had some kind of abusive, you know, trauma.
• 15:53
SPEAKER_06: So let me make sure I don't do anything like um quick or abrupt or physical because she's not going to, she's gonna go into defensive mode and and not receive any any feedback or whatever that have.
• 16:04
SPEAKER_06: So, you know, it's little things and experiences like that where you just kind of like learn how you know to I guess kind of navigate with uh different individuals.
• 16:13
SPEAKER_06: But yeah, it's it's um it's a process that is forever evolving for sure.
• 16:20
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, it is, man.
• 16:21
SPEAKER_00: I mean, being a great coach is like learning how to manage egos, you know, especially at the higher levels.
• 16:26
SPEAKER_00: It's already because a lot of those those those kids are now young men and women, they they've been so elite for the majority of their careers and and and and what they are there within that grouping or whatever that um you know uh that what you know, you have different levels, of course.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_00: So you have AAU, you have AAU elite, you have all these, but wherever they are, they're the the best at that in their class division or whatever it is.
• 16:48
SPEAKER_00: And so you have to develop a little bit of an ego if you're gonna be extremely competitive in sports.
• 16:53
SPEAKER_00: It's hard to not believe in yourself to the highest level, but then a coach's job begins to come to manage those egos, which is a little bit, you know, like you said, you got to be a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a psychotherapist, and all of that.
• 17:07
SPEAKER_00: You know, and um now, how did you find techniques and ways of you know to develop character, confidence, and accountability and even leadership alongside the athletic ability that they had?
• 17:22
SPEAKER_06: Man, so that's uh multifaceted question.
• 17:27
SPEAKER_06: So I I think like in the beginning, well, in the beginning and and most of my approach is is like I said, is is you know, just trying to have the athletes like have a really fun and enjoyable experience.
• 17:41
SPEAKER_06: Um, one, and then two, like um, you know, like let me see.
• 17:51
SPEAKER_06: There's a lot to unpack with that question.
• 17:54
  SPEAKER_00: I know, right?
• 17:54
SPEAKER_00: So let's take it, uh you know, let's let's go to the um when you see players that they need they're they're lacking in one area of their life in terms of how they compete and everything else, but you can see the talent in them.
• 18:07
SPEAKER_00: How do you bring that out of them?
• 18:09
  SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay, gotcha.
• 18:10
SPEAKER_06: So, you know, a lot of affirmations, you know what I mean?
• 18:15
SPEAKER_06: Um it's with track and field, like there's there's um it it really boils down to like the the fine details.
• 18:23
SPEAKER_06: Um and those fine details can can seriously make a difference between you know you jumping a centimeter farther or or running you know a tenth of a second faster.
• 18:35
SPEAKER_06: And that's the difference of making the podium and not.
• 18:37
SPEAKER_06: And so with track, like um focusing on on a lot of like fundamental details and and my new details and being as efficient as possible is where I found like they gain um confidence in their in their abilities and in their technique.
• 18:54
SPEAKER_06: And then as that grows, that's when the performances improve.
• 18:59
SPEAKER_06: Um, and so you know, like we're human, right?
• 19:02
SPEAKER_06: So we're not gonna do everything perfect.
• 19:04
SPEAKER_06: Um, and so when it comes to like, you know, giving coaching feedback and things like that, it's it's I guess kind of um not highlighting, but mentioning, you know, um, you know, maybe they were in the wrong position or or the posture was off or or you know, whatever the case may be, but then trying to immediately follow it up with like one or two positive things that they they did correctly.
• 19:28
SPEAKER_06: And so I found that if I can if I can um stack more affirmations than than um you know negative feedback or or or mishaps, then that's it, you know, creates the the balance we're looking for as far as building their confidence and in um and then having them have those those successes.
• 19:52
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's phenomenal because what you're talking about now is what great coaches do.
• 19:57
SPEAKER_00: You don't simply produce better athletes, you help produce stronger human beings, yeah, you know, more confident human beings, people that learn how to persevere and overcome, and people that are open to uh being coached, but by by giving them those affirmations, right?
• 20:12
SPEAKER_00: That that balance that you give them, but more information is than correction, now you're um you're allowing their nervous system to settle in.
• 20:20
SPEAKER_00: So what happens is the nervous system is designed to go into fight or flight, you know, along with obviously the the frontal lobe and the and the brain wants to protect you.
• 20:30
SPEAKER_00: A person, the the kid, but the person wants to be protected from harm.
• 20:35
SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't know that you're not a saber-toothed tiger, it just knows that you're trying to correct them and something might be wrong.
• 20:40
SPEAKER_00: And because something might be wrong, they might not win, and they could be a they could be a loser now.
• 20:44
SPEAKER_00: And so they go into fight or flight, and the nervous system goes into hyperdrive.
• 20:48
SPEAKER_00: But by giving them those affirmations, right?
• 20:51
SPEAKER_00: Massaging the affirmations in with some correction, now what you're doing is you're getting their nervous system to accept, accept your correction, and you're getting the nervous system to understand through the affirmations that they're safe, they're not going to be injured, harmed, is no one's gonna come and attack them.
• 21:07
SPEAKER_00: Uh, and so once the nervous system settles in and calms down and accepts the correction, now you'll have more success with more corrections moving forward.
• 21:16
  SPEAKER_00: So it's a great technique.
• 21:17
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and and like you said, with the nervous system being, you know, more calm or more at peace, the then the information that I'm I'm trying to relate to them and get them to understand, like it actually gets accepted and absorbed versus just one in, you know, one ear and out the other, um, because they're you know, they're like you said, you know, in in flight mode or fight mode.
• 21:41
SPEAKER_06: Um and so yeah, like it's you know, like I said before, like I'm I'm not the the type of coach to just kind of you know beat a message into somebody's head because like it just I've seen way too many coaches, you know, um be that way, and I just feel like they they don't get the response from the athletes that they're that they're looking for.
• 22:03
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 22:04
SPEAKER_00: And this technique, believe it or not, is used in like the ancient mystery schools.
• 22:08
SPEAKER_00: So in the ancient mystery schools, they would look for what they call adept initiates, team members, right?
• 22:15
SPEAKER_00: And they would hand pick people and bring them in, uh, and they would be going through this coursework, this training, you know, these classes, and and then it would be put to the test.
• 22:26
SPEAKER_00: But one thing it talks about in a lot of these texts is that when they're put to the test, if they fail, they're not scolded for failing, they're corrected, but they're also uh told what things they did good.
• 22:40
SPEAKER_00: And it's the same exact system, right?
• 22:42
SPEAKER_00: So the ancient mystery teachings, modern day coaching at a high level is the same thing.
• 22:47
SPEAKER_00: And then we can see how we can transcend this.
• 22:50
SPEAKER_00: This same system can apply to a person raising kids, dealing with employees.
• 22:55
SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can apply the template everywhere, and it's gonna work.
• 23:00
  SPEAKER_06: 100%.
• 23:00
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 23:01
SPEAKER_06: And uh what's also like so when you asked the previous question, and I and I was like, there's a lot to unpack.
• 23:07
SPEAKER_06: What um what I also came to my mind was um your your I've gone through your um Egyptian mystery school on on Forbidden Knowledge TV, like I don't know, maybe five or six times.
• 23:21
SPEAKER_06: Um and and because there's there's so many little nuggets in there throughout the whole um series where I was like, oh, this can I can apply this to this, you know, this part of my coaching, and I can apply this to this part of my parenting and and my own personal life.
• 23:37
SPEAKER_06: And um actually like a few of those those um um, I guess tips, if you will, that that I've I've taken from that series, like when I uh when I got to Cal Poly Pomona back in 22, I like very specifically was like, okay, like I'm going to go like hard in the paint when it comes to the mental side of the things because I've I feel like I've mastered all the um coaching the physical, you know, uh X's and O's, if you will, in terms of um helping track athletes develop and and improve.
• 24:09
SPEAKER_06: But I've always felt like there's been one, you know, like puzzle or one puzzle piece missing.
• 24:16
SPEAKER_06: And um some of them I actually I feel like I found through your your Egyptian mystery school, and I applied some of those principles um to my coaching philosophy now.
• 24:27
SPEAKER_06: And I've gone from like uh just having like maybe you know three, four athletes that I work with to like having some major success and major improvements to every single athlete that I've worked with are now you know seeing you know major improvements and and high levels of success.
• 24:46
SPEAKER_06: You know, some athletes like it's taken longer than others.
• 24:49
SPEAKER_06: You know, I've had a couple athletes, a couple of female athletes, like it took them all four years of their college experience before it finally clicked.
• 24:56
SPEAKER_06: Um, but and some of the other athletes like they've got it in in a year, but you know, like once I've realized like, oh, this mental component is is that last piece, and that's has sent everybody you know to that next level or tier, like yeah, like it's it's changed my coaching for the better.
• 25:16
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, amazing.
• 25:17
  SPEAKER_00: That's amazing, man.
• 25:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and um you know, a lot of the times I saw that you can have a player that has significant or athlete that has significant talent, but just kind of coasts, yeah.
• 25:31
SPEAKER_00: And then you have the one with less talent but works their ass off.
• 25:35
SPEAKER_00: You know, how do you how do you address that?
• 25:36
SPEAKER_00: How do you work with that?
• 25:38
SPEAKER_00: Oh man, so really good question.
• 25:41
SPEAKER_06: I think it's it's one of those you wish you could take the the insanely hardworking athletes with you know a little less, you know, uh natural gifted abilities and transfer it into you know the the Uber athletic, you know, athletes.
• 25:59
SPEAKER_06: Um but obviously you can't.
• 26:01
SPEAKER_06: But you know, for the ones that are are like they work their ass off, like um when they when they struggle to like I guess achieve the performance markers that they're that they're looking for, you know, like we see the signs and and and uh in practice and whatnot, and and it's like okay, it's bound to happen, it's bound to happen.
• 26:21
SPEAKER_06: And if it doesn't happen this week, okay, it you know, we we say it didn't happen today, it's gonna happen next time.
• 26:28
SPEAKER_06: And and just always kind of like looking forward to um the next opportunity, the next competition, the next game, the next match, whatever it may be, um, to say, okay, today is gonna be my day.
• 26:40
SPEAKER_06: And that's actually one of the things that um um Mike Powell really instilled in us when you know when I was in college, you know, he he gave us two two really key things um that I I use as as a coach now.
• 26:54
SPEAKER_06: And um one of them was there's always gonna be someone better than you somewhere on this planet.
• 27:00
SPEAKER_06: And if you can accept that fact, then you don't feel pressure about you know who you go up against.
• 27:08
SPEAKER_06: Because there's somewhere on this planet, there's gonna be somebody better at you in your in your sport.
• 27:14
SPEAKER_06: Um, and so it kind of takes some of the weight off your shoulders when you when you think about it like that.
• 27:19
SPEAKER_06: And then the other thing is is always, you know, whether you're um stepping on the basketball court or the soccer pitch or the tennis court or the track, doesn't matter.
• 27:29
SPEAKER_06: Like you you step onto that playing surface knowing and believing and feeling deep side deep inside you that like today is gonna be your best day of competition.
• 27:41
SPEAKER_06: And if it doesn't happen, it's okay because we're human and and you know, we're we're not gonna be perfect every single time out, you know, when when the whistle is blown or ball is dropped or whatever the case, you know.
• 27:54
SPEAKER_06: So if it doesn't happen then, then it's like, all right, I got them next time, I'm gonna get them next time.
• 28:00
SPEAKER_06: And even if so and so is better than me on paper, I'm today, I'm gonna beat them.
• 28:06
SPEAKER_06: And you kind of you have to learn how to um kind of walk with that that confidence.
• 28:12
SPEAKER_06: And when you do that, um, in my experience, both personally and as uh as a coach, like um the chances of success go go way up.
• 28:22
SPEAKER_06: And so I kind of bring it back to the the lesser talented athlete, like um, you know, for them, like you know, I as a as a track and field coach, like I'm just trying to get them to achieve a mark in the long jump or the triple jump or the high jump or or or run a faster time in the hurdles or the sprinting events than they ever thought they could achieve.
• 28:43
SPEAKER_06: Because then when when they do actually achieve it, and you see this gigantic Kool-Aid smile go across their face and their eyes are real big, and like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I just accomplished that.
• 28:55
SPEAKER_06: And you as the coach, you're like, I told you, and and you get that feeling of of um joy and satisfaction and uh and all that because they they achieved something that they didn't necessarily see themselves being able to achieve, and that's just as great as winning a national championship, in my opinion.
• 29:15
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know what I mean?
• 29:16
  SPEAKER_06: Because not everybody, right?
• 29:18
SPEAKER_06: Like not everybody is going to the Olympics, not everybody is gonna play in the NFL or the NBA, and so your high school, you know, state competition or you know, your AAU, you know, championship match or whatever the case may be, like that might be your Olympic level experience.
• 29:37
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and and you know, try to try to do the best to uh make it as as enjoyable for everybody at every talent level.
• 29:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, get the most out of it because you're right, you know.
• 29:49
SPEAKER_00: Um, and you said a couple of really key things there, because one thing I teach in my academy is taking on challenges, right?
• 29:58
SPEAKER_00: Every single day we take on a challenge.
• 30:00
SPEAKER_00: The moment we open our eyes, we wake up, challenge begins for the day.
• 30:03
SPEAKER_00: The challenge of just the day, right?
• 30:06
SPEAKER_00: I mean, you don't even know what's gonna blindside you that day, but they're coming, and you know that somehow, somehow, something's gonna unexpect it's gonna pop up, and now you've got to become a problem solver.
• 30:17
SPEAKER_00: Um, but what I found was that uh teaching the way you're doing and coaching is great because they need to understand that you know, if you take on the challenge, that you have to believe that today is your day, right?
• 30:30
SPEAKER_00: Today is your day to win and achieve that challenge, whether it's winning the race, you know, beating a time, jumping another height, in my case, you know, beating winning a tournament, whatever it is, playing your best, you know, um, you know, have being very efficient, you know, turnover ratio and everything else.
• 30:47
  SPEAKER_01: Right.
• 30:47
SPEAKER_00: Because when we take on a challenge, and this goes for anybody in anything that they do, you have to believe wholeheartedly inside of your core that you can achieve it.
• 31:01
SPEAKER_00: I think what happens is some people, including athletes, will have the goal and speak the affirmation of I want to win this challenge, I want to win this race, I want to win this game, I want to perform my best.
• 31:12
SPEAKER_00: But internally, there's a mismatch with the vibration.
• 31:16
SPEAKER_00: So the vibration internally is doubt, but the external uh energy is saying, Yeah, I'm gonna win.
• 31:22
SPEAKER_00: But both have to match the conscious and the speaking have to match what's going on inside because that's what really matters.
• 31:28
SPEAKER_00: I tell people all the time if if if I was um you know somewhere and Michael Jordan in his prime challenged me to a one-on-one in his prime, and I said yes, now the odds are Michael Jordan would destroy me, right?
• 31:43
SPEAKER_00: However, however, if I say yes to the challenge, right, that means I'm going all in.
• 31:51
SPEAKER_00: In my heart of hearts, today is my day to beat Michael Jordan, right?
• 31:56
SPEAKER_00: And that's the mindset that you have to have for every single challenge that you take.
• 32:00
SPEAKER_00: The moment you open your eyes, you have to believe in your heart of hearts that today you're going to take on this challenge and you're gonna win.
• 32:07
SPEAKER_00: And I think if more people took on that mindset and that energy, there'll be many more successful days.
• 32:13
SPEAKER_00: And sometimes success is not just winning something, it's just getting through something.
• 32:18
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 32:18
SPEAKER_00: And what did you learn from it?
• 32:19
SPEAKER_00: You know what I mean?
• 32:20
  SPEAKER_06: Yes.
• 32:21
SPEAKER_06: And and that's what I tell um a lot of student athletes, like as I'm going through the recruiting process with them, is for me, winning is is multifaceted.
• 32:33
SPEAKER_06: You know, it's it could just be as simple as them achieving a new personal best.
• 32:39
SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, and that personal best, you know, an athlete may spend, you know, four years training with a coach, and if we're talking track and field, and and you know, only drop their time in the sprints like, you know, um a couple of tenths of a second, or they only improve in the long jump by like four or five inches.
• 32:58
  SPEAKER_06: That is success.
• 33:00
SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
• 33:01
SPEAKER_06: Um and but you know, sure, everybody wants more than that, of course.
• 33:06
SPEAKER_06: Who you know, who does it?
• 33:08
SPEAKER_06: But as long as you're improving and and graduate, gradually moving towards um that that new mark or that level of success, then you know, that's a win to me.
• 33:20
SPEAKER_06: And you know, um, like you said, like going in against you know, one-on-one versus Michael Jordan, like yes, 100%.
• 33:28
SPEAKER_06: Like you have to think um that today is is your day.
• 33:32
SPEAKER_06: So another thing that I'll use is is um is PBS.
• 33:36
SPEAKER_06: And no, I'm not talking about cable or public TV, it's positivity, belief, sacrifice.
• 33:42
SPEAKER_06: And so um, you have to have a a positive mindset and you have to have the belief in your core, just like you said, um that you're going to be successful in whatever it is you do.
• 33:56
SPEAKER_06: And this can be applied to life, it doesn't have to be just sport related.
• 33:59
SPEAKER_06: Um, but then you also have to understand that there's going to, at some point in whether it may be in a career or in a sport, you're gonna have to have um there's gonna be a moment where you have to like sacrifice something.
• 34:12
SPEAKER_06: So um if if I'm a collegiate athlete or a high school athlete and I want to be really good at my sport, well, I might have to sacrifice going out and hanging out with my friends on the weekend and staying home and and getting that extra sleep so my body can recover and then I can go perform.
• 34:30
SPEAKER_06: Or I might choose to go hang out with my friends and not get the sleep, and then I've now sacrificed my sport because when I go to perform, well, my body isn't recovered, or I'm I'm you know, I'm poorly hydrated or something like that because I went and and did the fun thing.
• 34:46
SPEAKER_06: And so now my sport got sacrificed.
• 34:49
SPEAKER_06: So if you kind of apply those, if I feel like if people kind of apply those um that you know, those steps, positivity, belief, sacrifice, you know, and and help that kind of guide their thought process and their and their decision making, you know, then they'll start to, you know, make better choices and and um, but then also walk in that um that belief and that that um that positive mindset that okay, I'm going to accomplish or or I'm going to or um win whatever challenge of the day is.
• 35:25
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it's amazing, man.
• 35:26
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 35:27
SPEAKER_00: Because now you're tapping into the ancient hermetic principles of cause and effect.
• 35:31
SPEAKER_00: And so people have to understand that every conscious thought you have that you act on is going to have a consequence, whether it's a good consequence or a bad consequence.
• 35:40
SPEAKER_00: Now, if you know you've got a big game or a big race the next day, and your friends are pulling you to go to this big time party that's gonna, you know, it's gonna run until three, four o'clock in the morning, and you're gonna drink 10 beers or whatever the case may be, right?
• 35:51
SPEAKER_00: And then the consequence is a poor performance the next day.
• 35:54
SPEAKER_00: But that can be applied to anything in your life.
• 35:57
SPEAKER_00: I don't care where you are, what level you are, who you are, what race, what race you are, it doesn't matter.
• 36:01
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 36:02
SPEAKER_00: You apply that thought process to anything, you can pre-think the future outcome.
• 36:06
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I used to tell my players, okay, if you if you're gonna stay up all night playing video games, and you know we have a big tournament, we're probably gonna play three games because AAU is brutal.
• 36:17
SPEAKER_00: Three games for Saturday, right?
• 36:20
  SPEAKER_00: Bam, bam, bam.
• 36:21
SPEAKER_00: And you're gonna stay up to three, four o'clock, five o'clock in the morning talking, gossiping, and playing video games.
• 36:28
SPEAKER_00: What do you think is gonna happen tomorrow?
• 36:30
SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna perform good or not?
• 36:32
SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna be tired?
• 36:33
SPEAKER_00: Are you gonna want to be when I put you in that diamond press?
• 36:35
SPEAKER_00: Am I gonna have to sub you out in two minutes?
• 36:38
  SPEAKER_00: Right.
• 36:39
  SPEAKER_00: So I said, I want you to pre-think.
• 36:42
  SPEAKER_00: Now I want you to pre-think.
• 36:44
SPEAKER_00: I would make them close their eyes and pre-think the action you would normally take if I didn't tell you about this, and I want you to see the future outcome.
• 36:51
SPEAKER_00: I want you to prethink the outcome if you did exactly what you should be doing, which is getting cleaned up, take a shower, get some good rest, and meditate on the day tomorrow and meditate on performing and having a high level of performance tomorrow.
• 37:06
  SPEAKER_00: Right?
• 37:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then I want you to see the outcome of that and envision that outcome.
• 37:11
SPEAKER_00: I said, now it's in your hands.
• 37:13
  SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm not, I can't control you.
• 37:17
SPEAKER_00: I'm going back to my room, I'm gonna let you make your choice, right?
• 37:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, and that's how I used to do it, man.
• 37:24
SPEAKER_00: And uh damn, they they were performers, man.
• 37:27
  SPEAKER_00: They were real performers.
• 37:28
SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was incredible to see.
• 37:30
SPEAKER_06: I think that's a testament to your ability as as the coach to get them to buy in, right?
• 37:36
SPEAKER_06: Because, you know, I've I've done the exact same thing with high school athletes and college athletes, and and I tell them that that same kind of information, you know, and let them kind of make the choice because I was once in their shoes in terms of a high school athlete and a college athlete.
• 37:54
SPEAKER_06: And I also know that when my coaches said, like, hey, don't stay up late, get your rest so you're so you can perform at a high level.
• 38:01
SPEAKER_06: And I'm like, uh, I got this, and I stayed up late, or I went out, you know, to the to the club or whatever the case may be, and you know, came back and performed and may have performed well or mediocre.
• 38:15
SPEAKER_06: Um, but if I performed well and I went out, then it's kind of like negative feedback, right?
• 38:20
SPEAKER_06: Like, oh yeah, see, I got this.
• 38:21
SPEAKER_06: Like, I can still go do the club thing and still jump really far distances.
• 38:25
SPEAKER_06: Um, but how much farther would I have jumped had I not gone to the club and stayed in in the hotel and got my sleep?
• 38:34
  SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
• 38:35
SPEAKER_06: But yeah, uh statistically speaking, I probably should have jumped farther than than I did when I was in college, you know.
• 38:42
SPEAKER_06: And so, like you said, it's you gotta you give them the the the knowledge and the information and then kind of let them you know discern and make the choices for themselves.
• 38:53
SPEAKER_06: And as coaches, we kind of hope and pray and cross our fingers and knock on wood that they make the right choices, but if they don't, right, then you know it'll be a learning lesson for them.
• 39:04
SPEAKER_06: And and I've even called athletes out, like, yeah, you were up till four in the morning, weren't you?
• 39:08
SPEAKER_06: No, coach, I got to sleep really because I saw your social media because I was up because I'm not performing.
• 39:15
SPEAKER_06: Like, you know, so I know you you weren't adhering to the the advice I gave, and you know, we saw how you didn't perform well, so let's make sure the next time we go to travel to this meet or whatever, we do a better job.
• 39:31
SPEAKER_06: And you know, sometimes they gotta learn the hard way, and you know, that's life, and that's growing up and maturing.
• 39:37
SPEAKER_00: And what if the greatest journey of your life is not simply a vacation, but an expedition into the mysteries of the ancient world?
• 39:45
SPEAKER_00: I want you to join me, Billy Carson, for an unforgettable 10-day forbidded knowledge journey through Peru and Bolivia.
• 39:54
  SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be amazing.
• 39:56
SPEAKER_00: We're gonna begin in Cusco and enter the magnificent Sacred Valley, stopping at Casasuca and the panoramic Turay Viewpoint.
• 40:06
SPEAKER_00: And then we travel to the mysterious cave sanctuary of Nova Iglesia and investigate the gigantic megalithic walls of Olientumbo.

SPEAKER_00: We're gonna descend into the circular terraces of Moray and enjoy an incredible culinary experience in Tiobamba and visit the authentic Andean community to witness its ancient weaving traditions.
• 40:29
  SPEAKER_00: It's really a sacred journey.
• 40:31
SPEAKER_00: We'll have a traditional shaman that will travel with us through the entire journey, guiding sacred rituals and helping us connect with the spiritual energy of the land, including a powerful ceremony honoring Pachamama, Mother Earth.
• 40:47
SPEAKER_00: And then comes one of the most dramatic experiences of the tour.
• 40:52
SPEAKER_00: It is going to be mesmerizing because we're gonna board a spectacular glass roof Vista Dome train and travel through the lush Peruvian jungle surrounded by rushing rivers, cloud-covered mountains, and breathtaking scenery that you can't see anywhere else.

• 41:24
SPEAKER_00: In Cusco, we're gonna investigate Saxe Uaman and the 12-angle stone and the Corta cancha, the ancient temple of the sun.
• 41:32
SPEAKER_00: We're gonna trek across the colorful rainbow mountain as we cross Kusipata, towering over the Asguante mountain range, before continuing into Puno and the sacred waters of Lake Titicapa, one of the highest lakes in the world.
• 41:48
SPEAKER_00: And next we visit the mysterious gate of the gods at Amarumuru and the sacred site of the Inca Uyo.
• 41:57
SPEAKER_00: We'll cross into Bolivia to explore Tiuanaku and its lithic museum, the Akapana Pyramid, the Kalasaya Temple, and the semi-subterranean temple, the Sun Gate and the astonishing precision ruins of Puma Punku, one of the most amazing and astonishing sights that you'll ever see in the world.
• 42:18
SPEAKER_00: Finally, we set sail across Lake Titicaca to experience Euro's floating islands and the ancient traditions of Tequila Island.
• 42:27
SPEAKER_00: Throughout this journey, we'll stay in incredible luxury hotels, enjoy amazing food, and travel with a community passionate about ancient civilizations, lost technology, spirituality, and discovery.
• 42:40
  SPEAKER_00: Space is extremely limited.
• 42:43
SPEAKER_00: So visit the link below or the link in my bio and make sure you place your registration and reserve your spot today.
• 42:52
SPEAKER_00: I'll see you in the Andes.
• 42:53
SPEAKER_06: You know, it's part of the process.
• 42:55
  SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
• 42:56
SPEAKER_00: It's just part of life.
• 42:57
SPEAKER_00: And this happens to us as, you know, kids, as young adults, as grown adults, as mid-age adults.
• 43:03
  SPEAKER_00: Boy.
• 43:04
SPEAKER_00: At some point, we have to begin to recognize what we're doing that's stopping and uh and stunting our growth, right?
• 43:11
  SPEAKER_00: That's putting a ceiling over us.
• 43:13
  SPEAKER_00: It's us that's putting the ceiling.
• 43:14
SPEAKER_00: The ceiling technically doesn't exist, but we're creating it in our own actions or our own inaction, our own lack of sacrifice, our own, our own lack of mindset is breaking these limitations, lack of belief, right?
• 43:27
SPEAKER_00: All of those things create the you know the the right recipe for not achieving at the highest level that we possibly can, not becoming the best version of ourselves, you know.
• 43:38
  SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 43:39
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 43:40
  SPEAKER_00: So wow.
• 43:41
SPEAKER_00: And do you have anything that you teach for um you know discipline and and uh preparation besides um, you know, besides that?
• 43:50
SPEAKER_06: Uh well, what exactly do you mean by like discipline?
• 43:54
SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, being consistent, uh sticking to a regimen, whether it's a training regimen, whether it's a particular making sure you don't miss any practices, um, you know, the kind of the core root activities that all athletes should kind of follow to make sure that they're being consistent in their in their um in their in their training and their growth and development as an athlete.
• 44:16
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you know, it's I think it's one of those like um you you give you give as or I give as much information as as I can in terms of um like here's here's the steps or here's the the process that that we need to take if we're going to try to achieve um certain goals.
• 44:35
SPEAKER_06: And you know, for a lot of them, like because I I you know coach primarily with collegiate athletes, like a lot of them have so many other things going on in life.
• 44:46
SPEAKER_06: Like they're still learning about who they are as a as a person.
• 44:49
SPEAKER_06: They're still, you know, some of them are still trying to make choices on which, you know, which uh subject matter they're gonna get their degree in.
• 44:56
SPEAKER_06: And so, um, but those are also like.
• 45:00
  SPEAKER_06: Evolving.
• 45:01
SPEAKER_06: Some of them, you know, everybody's like, you know, now you got to work, you know, two or three jobs just to like, you know, pay the bills these days.
• 45:08
SPEAKER_06: So, um, and and pay for tuition and groceries and all that.
• 45:11
SPEAKER_06: So some of them are working.
• 45:13
SPEAKER_06: Uh, obviously, they want to have a social life, um, whether that's just with friends or or boyfriend or girlfriend.
• 45:19
SPEAKER_06: So, like, all these different factors come into play when you know, having to make choices on like where am I gonna prioritize, you know, um everything that I I need to do and that I want to do so that I can be successful.
• 45:35
SPEAKER_06: And so, you know, you got to guide them through it oftentimes.
• 45:40
SPEAKER_06: And it's easy for me.
• 45:42
SPEAKER_06: Well, it's kind of easy for me, one, because I've been doing this for so long, but then two, because I I've been the high school athlete, I've been the college athlete, I've been the the post-collegiate, you know, semi-professional athlete.
• 45:54
SPEAKER_06: Um, and so I've got all those experiences to kind of lean on to help guide them through.
• 45:59
SPEAKER_06: Um, but it's different for everybody.
• 46:01
SPEAKER_06: So I don't know that I can kind of give like the you know, the two, three steps that like work all the time.
• 46:11
SPEAKER_06: Um, but being consistent for sure, like anything you're you work consistently at, you're gonna get better at.
• 46:19
SPEAKER_06: And you know, like we already talked about, if you if you are coming in with a a positive mindset and and believing it in your core and you're consistent, then I think you see the the successes that you're looking for, and hopefully at the rate that you're looking for.
• 46:38
SPEAKER_06: Um, but again, sometimes it it doesn't necessarily happen on you know that that individual or that athlete's time frame, yeah.
• 46:47
SPEAKER_06: But but that doesn't mean it's not going to happen.
• 46:50
SPEAKER_06: And so you still gotta have that belief that, like, okay, it's coming, it's just a matter of when.
• 46:55
SPEAKER_06: Um and sometimes there's a lot of patience that that has to come along with that, um, which is hard in this this day and age that we live in, you know, everything is so like fast-paced and and um instant gratification and all that kind of stuff, and so um, you know, there's that element as well that kind of comes into play.
• 47:15
SPEAKER_06: So yeah, it's there's a lot to it, and and you know, we could probably on that subject or that question alone, we could probably like really dissect it and and be here for you know two more episodes.
• 47:29
  SPEAKER_00: I know, right?
• 47:29
  SPEAKER_00: It's a lot.
• 47:30
SPEAKER_00: There's a there's a lot that goes into coaching that people don't really understand.
• 47:33
SPEAKER_00: They just say, Oh, this guy's the coach.
• 47:36
SPEAKER_00: But from the coach's perspective, at least a coach that's serious, like we're we're you know, these are you know, we're not just um a volunteer at the boys and girls club to hang around and babysit the kids, right?
• 47:47
  SPEAKER_00: Like really developing athletes.
• 47:50
SPEAKER_00: You know, I was in youth development for the USA Team USA.
• 47:54
  SPEAKER_00: Youth development.
• 47:55
SPEAKER_00: So we're like really developing athletes.
• 47:57
SPEAKER_00: We're not just you know hanging out and letting them run around the play yard, you know what I mean?
• 48:03
SPEAKER_00: And and a lot of that though, I found through really fine-tuning my uh ability as a coach or to coach properly and to understand and to get the psychology of how to deal with each individual player and how to pull the best out of them to the best of my ability at least.
• 48:23
SPEAKER_00: I saw how I can apply that to other areas of my life, right?
• 48:26
SPEAKER_00: And I saw how I can apply that to literally business, family, you know, friends, uh anything.
• 48:33
SPEAKER_00: What have you been able to, how have you been able to uh alchemically convert some of that coaching knowledge into other areas of your life?
• 48:45
SPEAKER_06: Um well, you know, I think through sport, like in terms of you know, being uh an athlete that, you know, I played basketball and soccer, you know, I feel like at a high level, along with track growing up.
• 49:00
  SPEAKER_06: Excuse me.
• 49:01
SPEAKER_06: And so, you know, um learning how to, you know, problem solve, um, you know, problem solving skills and and how how to handle pressure, um, how to handle frustration, um, you know, the the joys of the winning and the and the you know the heartache, if you will, of of losing.
• 49:22
  SPEAKER_06: Um uh what else?
• 49:24
SPEAKER_06: Like learning a sense of of accomplishment.
• 49:26
SPEAKER_06: Hey, like I put the work in, I was able to accomplish, you know, X, Y, Z.
• 49:31
SPEAKER_06: Um, like all those things um as an athlete for sure, um is is some of the elements of of life or elements that you can apply to life that I I learned through my athletic journey.
• 49:47
SPEAKER_06: And so um, you know, I think those are are areas that like I'll I'll highlight or touch every now and then, you know, with the athletes that I coach, um, just to help them learn.
• 49:58
SPEAKER_06: Because like you said earlier, like, you know, we're not just coaching, you know, these these athletes at whatever age level to to be better in their sport, like we're also trying to teach them the the skills that they're gonna need in life to to be successful in life, you know, in whatever career field they they might wind up end up being in.
• 50:18
SPEAKER_06: And so um, you know, there's there's I feel like there's always a moment in practice or or a game or competition where um you can you can show or highlight a a life lesson um you know for for each individual.
• 50:36
SPEAKER_06: Um and so you know hopefully coaches that are are maybe listening to this, like they they they start to realize like, oh, I can I can start to touch on this area or this aspect of of a life skill when this situation happens, you know, with with my athletes.
• 50:56
SPEAKER_06: And you don't have to do it all the time, but if you can start like sprinkling them in here and there, then you know you're gonna help grow um better people, individuals, um, and at the same time, I think you're gonna also um have them grow and and succeed as as athletes.
• 51:19
SPEAKER_06: And you know, like like we said, it's it's uh because it's it's different all the time and you're working with diff different athletes with different backgrounds and different skill sets, like it's a challenge.
• 51:32
  SPEAKER_06: You know, I I don't I don't think it's like it's I don't think it's easy, you know what I mean?
• 51:38
SPEAKER_06: And and um you can't touch on every single life element or or sorry, like um learning lesson um every time it happens.
• 51:49
SPEAKER_06: Um but hopefully like there are opportunities for um coaches out there um or you know, supervisors, bosses, um, teachers, especially, like where you can say, hey, like I saw this happen, I saw how you reacted, like, you know, you know, next time you can you can you can avoid a negative situation before it happens because of the the learning experience, or hey, you handle that phenomenally, like that's really impressive.
• 52:18
SPEAKER_06: Like, great job, keep doing what you're doing because you're you're on the right track, or somewhere in between.
• 52:26
SPEAKER_06: And you know, um, and that's I think for me anyway, that's that's um that's part of what makes this fun as uh to be a coach, you know what I mean?
• 52:38
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 52:39
  SPEAKER_00: It's definitely a lifestyle, you know.
• 52:41
SPEAKER_00: When when I was coaching, it's a lifestyle, man.
• 52:44
SPEAKER_00: You know, level that you and I were coaching at, you're still coaching.
• 52:48
SPEAKER_00: I right the level that I was coaching at, you know, it's it's you know, I I know you can relate, it's an absolute lifestyle.
• 52:53
SPEAKER_06: It's my wife, like she she gets on me at times because you know, like I'll I'll be all day at practice or all day at a track meet, and then I'll come home and I'm I'm you know looking at videos of of my athletes' performances and and trying to see, okay, what could I what could they have done better?
• 53:11
SPEAKER_06: What do I need to work on next week and practice?
• 53:14
SPEAKER_06: And then I'm turning on the TV and I'm watching, you know, a replay of you know Olympic or or Diamond League track and field meet, or I'm just watching you know my Lakers play basketball and and yelling at the TV.
• 53:27
SPEAKER_06: Um because I'm like you said, it's a lifestyle, and I'm just so into it.
• 53:31
SPEAKER_06: She's like, man, can you just take a break at some point?
• 53:36
SPEAKER_06: And that's another thing I've had to learn through my coaching experiences, like, is there's times I need to like turn my my coaching switch off and step away and and and decompress and and and recover, right?
• 53:52
SPEAKER_06: Because as coaches and and mentors, you know, like for you and your academy, like we're pouring a lot of ourselves into you know the people that we are are working with.
• 54:04
SPEAKER_06: And we have to also take time for ourselves to kind of refill our cup, so to speak, um and rejuvenate so that we can give our best versions of ourselves to uh you know the people that we are are working with, whether they're athletes or or employees or entrepreneurs or or you know, mentees or whatever the case.
• 54:24
SPEAKER_06: Um and so yeah, like um, and I think that's kind of what where you know going to Egypt with you a couple of years ago was like was one of those like I need a full like because by that time I was three years here at at Cal Polypagona, and I was like, dude, I need to I need a reset.
• 54:43
SPEAKER_06: And I just I need to I need to get away for a couple of weeks because I was going very hard for you know my first three seasons in terms of like I said, coaching the the physical elements, but like I said, very specific on the mental part of it.
• 54:57
SPEAKER_06: Um so like I just need to get away, go experience some something absolutely incredible and amazing.
• 55:05
SPEAKER_06: Um, that's been on my bucket list for forever.
• 55:08
SPEAKER_06: And and man, that was incredible.
• 55:11
SPEAKER_06: And when I and when I tell you I came back freaking rejuvenated, and my athletes are like, oh coach, all right, you turned up, we ready, okay.
• 55:22
  SPEAKER_06: We're gonna have a year.
• 55:24
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 55:25
SPEAKER_00: You know, part in part, you know, those temples that we visited in Egypt and those pyramids, they are uh they're they're healing chambers, right?
• 55:35
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 55:36
SPEAKER_00: So those places, okay, those temples and pyramids have multi-functions, all of them.
• 55:42
SPEAKER_00: But the base level function is healing, right?
• 55:46
SPEAKER_00: So just being at the sites, it energizes you, rejuvenates you.
• 55:51
SPEAKER_00: Um, a lot of people have reported now, they've been documenting and like cataloging, blood pressure dropping, yeah, yeah, uh people with eye pressure issues dropping, uh, all these different healing mechanisms are happening in and around those temples.
• 56:07
SPEAKER_00: So when we go to those temples, without even having to have any knowledge of how it's working, it's just working on you because it's built based on different types of uh sacred geometrical principles.
• 56:20
SPEAKER_00: It's on top of magnetic vortices and it harnesses the energy from the earth, it channels magnetism through the body, and it energizes you with those magnetite, those crystal magnetite blocks and those crystal diorite blocks.
• 56:33
SPEAKER_00: So uh magnet, not magnetic crystal diorite and crystal granite blocks.
• 56:37
SPEAKER_00: So all that's happening and buzzing in and outside of you while you're there, completely unaware that it's working on you.
• 56:43
SPEAKER_00: And a lot of people have reported coming back and like hitting the ground running, you know, just like completely rejuvenated.
• 56:49
  SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
• 56:50
SPEAKER_06: And and even outside of that, like I think even just for for me, one of the other uh pieces or or benefits, if you will, just seeing and being like in awe of the amazement of of the structures and whatnot, and it's like, yo, if you know, an ancient civilization can accomplish you know the stuff that they accomplished in the in the design and in the in the um in the art and you know, in the hieroglyphs and all that kind of stuff, like you know, just like if they can achieve these high levels of of uh accomplishment, okay, well, then I can achieve more than than I ever thought I could.
• 57:34
SPEAKER_06: And so um, you know, for me, like I'm I'm a highly competitive uh person.
• 57:39
SPEAKER_06: And so like every time I I experience new levels of success, you know, my bar gets raised.
• 57:45
SPEAKER_06: Um and so it's just one of those like, oh yeah, there's there's more, like I got work to do.
• 57:51
SPEAKER_06: There's still like more out there for me to accomplish as as a coach.
• 57:56
SPEAKER_06: And and you know, part of me like still wants to, you know, uh do some things as an athlete that I haven't accomplished, you know, back when I was competing.
• 58:05
SPEAKER_06: Um it's the beauty about about track and field is doesn't matter how old you are, um, you can still compete in in the sport, um, which is awesome.
• 58:14
SPEAKER_06: You know, I seen an 89-year-old guy like long jump.
• 58:17
SPEAKER_06: Um I mean, you know, he he only jumped like I think like 10 or 11 feet.
• 58:22
SPEAKER_06: Um, and he was running, you know, like he was a brisk walk down the runway.
• 58:28
SPEAKER_06: Uh, but he did it, right?
• 58:29
SPEAKER_06: Like I there's videos floating online of you know, these uh there's a couple of guys that are one's like 92, and I think the other one's like 101, and they're you know, they're running 100 meters, and and who cares about what the times are running?
• 58:42
SPEAKER_06: Like it's I mean, don't get me wrong, like they're running fast for their age, but like the fact that they're still out there doing it exactly is phenomenal.
• 58:51
SPEAKER_00: Um that's called quality, quality of life, which is what I want.
• 58:55
SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes, I need quality of life because you know we were in Egypt in 2024, we did about 150 miles in the in the Sahara Desert over the course of those 12 days.
• 59:04
SPEAKER_00: We did 150 miles of walking, right?
• 59:07
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
• 59:08
SPEAKER_00: You know, and uh you can't do that unless you have you know relative good quality of life, and um people really, you know, they they go, you know, you know, I I I'll die one day anyway.
• 59:21
SPEAKER_00: I hear that a lot, you know, I'm gonna die anyway, you know.
• 59:23
SPEAKER_00: So they just I'm not trying to die, man.
• 59:25
SPEAKER_06: I'm trying to, I'm trying to keep going.
• 59:26
SPEAKER_06: Like this this life is way too much fun.
• 59:30
SPEAKER_06: Like, I I've been you know, I've been blessed with you know with some amazing experiences from from traveling the world to as a DJ to you know have being friends with the world record holder to you know meeting you who I you know followed on on social media for a number of years and and did the whole Egyptian mystery school.
• 59:49
SPEAKER_06: And a couple years later, I'm with you in Egypt.
• 59:51
SPEAKER_06: Like, you know, like I'm I've been very blessed, you know, happily married, two kids, like successful athletes.
• 59:59
SPEAKER_06: Like I want to keep enjoying this for as long as possible.
• 1:00:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, man, I get it.
• 1:00:04
  SPEAKER_00: I get it, man.
• 1:00:05
SPEAKER_00: You've you had a blessed, blessed, blessed life, man.
• 1:00:07
SPEAKER_00: And um, and I remember one thing that we joked about uh in in Egypt when we were on the um the rooftop, you know, because your wife was saying that you kind of resemble Shamar Moore, and you have been in the sun to must.
• 1:00:19
SPEAKER_00: I said you were Charmar Moore.
• 1:00:23
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, dude, you you hit me with that one, and I was like, oh, I can normally like shoot back, but dude, like that was a haymaker.
• 1:00:32
  SPEAKER_06: I I don't I don't have a response for that.
• 1:00:35
SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna get freaking count out here, dude.
• 1:00:37
SPEAKER_00: That was oh man, we had a yeah, we had such a good time, man.
• 1:00:41
SPEAKER_00: We had a really, really good time, but you know, I I appreciate you coming on here.
• 1:00:45
  SPEAKER_00: This was fantastic.
• 1:00:46
SPEAKER_00: Um, we gotta do more of this.
• 1:00:49
SPEAKER_00: Yes, and the reason why we're talking about coaching for those who might be like, why is coach really talking about coaching?
• 1:00:54
SPEAKER_00: Well, because coaching in sports, in life, in business, it's all the same, right?
• 1:00:59
  SPEAKER_00: It's mindset, right?
• 1:01:01
SPEAKER_00: It's purpose, legacy, is passing down knowledge.
• 1:01:04
SPEAKER_00: How do lessons get learned in sports and how they transfer into business, family, leadership?
• 1:01:09
SPEAKER_00: How does how does it transfer into life?
• 1:01:11
SPEAKER_00: What responsibility do coaches have to pass knowledge and wisdom on to the next generation?
• 1:01:16
  SPEAKER_01: Right?
• 1:01:17
SPEAKER_00: And so it's really like how should coaching success be even measured beyond championships, right?
• 1:01:23
  SPEAKER_00: Beyond scholarship, beyond statistics.
• 1:01:25
SPEAKER_00: You know, it's all about what we want our legacy to be, what you want your legacy to be.
• 1:01:30
SPEAKER_00: Because we want transformed human beings, transformed individuals that look back and remember, I remember doing that.
• 1:01:37
SPEAKER_00: I remember how grueling, how hard it was.
• 1:01:38
SPEAKER_00: I remember having to have faith and belief in myself.
• 1:01:41
SPEAKER_00: I remember developing that faith and belief.
• 1:01:42
SPEAKER_00: I remember achieving my goals.
• 1:01:44
SPEAKER_00: Now let me apply that to this thing over here, you know, and get it done.
• 1:01:48
SPEAKER_00: And I think that's that's some of the most important lessons that we can uh hand down from coaching people and uh and being involved in their life from that level, you know?
• 1:01:56
SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and and you know, like to me, those um, those things that you just you just talked about like are are just as um important, but like just they're they're just as enjoyable as the athletic achievement.
• 1:02:14
SPEAKER_06: And you know, for me, it's it's been, you know, when I was coaching at high school or or community college level, it's it's helping athletes grow as people and it as um in their athletic performance and their confidence to then get to a level where they can transfer to you know division two or division one school or whatever the case, and then go on to continue and be successful, or the ones that you know that um moved on when they graduated and and applied for you know whatever position and you know reach back to me and say, hey coach, like I'm applying for this position.
• 1:02:48
SPEAKER_06: Can you write me a letter of recommendation?
• 1:02:50
SPEAKER_06: Or hey coach, I'm getting married.
• 1:02:52
SPEAKER_06: You are so like impactful in my life, I have to have you as a guest at my wedding.
• 1:02:56
SPEAKER_06: Like those are like you know, the the the very meaningful moments of of success as a coach outside of the the athletic compartment components.
• 1:03:09
SPEAKER_06: And you know, that it's those moments where where I I know and understand, okay, like I'm fulfilling my purpose or my calling to help the next generation get to the next level, whatever that next level is, because it's different for everybody.
• 1:03:26
SPEAKER_06: Um, and and so you know that's kind of how I'm trying to like, I guess, uh treat my what I want my legacy to be is did I do enough to help the next generation?
• 1:03:39
SPEAKER_06: Because I had plenty of people before me who really helped me out um to be, you know, successful and and have a great experience in in life and sport.
• 1:03:50
SPEAKER_06: And so I'm trying to pay it forward and do the same, same for the next next generation.
• 1:03:55
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, fantastic, fantastic.
• 1:03:58
SPEAKER_00: And do you have any uh projects or social media that you want anybody to follow up on with you?
• 1:04:04
  SPEAKER_06: Sure.
• 1:04:05
SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm probably the most active on uh Instagram.
• 1:04:09
  SPEAKER_06: Uh my Instagram handle is is Swivel S W I V L L.
• 1:04:13
SPEAKER_06: Um, it's also my DJ name.
• 1:04:16
SPEAKER_06: So um you can you know you can find me there in terms of being the most active.
• 1:04:20
SPEAKER_06: You know, I'm also on Twitter and threads, um, a little bit here and there.
• 1:04:25
SPEAKER_06: Um got my Soul Cal Elite uh like track and field, like uh well it's primarily track and field, but I coach, you know, uh do like specialized training for athletes of all sports.
• 1:04:37
SPEAKER_06: Um working on a new website now, so I'll hopefully have that up uh soon.
• 1:04:42
SPEAKER_06: Um but yeah, other than outside of that, Cal Poly Pomona is um you know where you can find me on on the track if you're a track athlete.
• 1:04:51
SPEAKER_06: Um and you know, we're hosting the Division II national championships this year, so we're we're looking forward to that.
• 1:04:58
SPEAKER_06: We got a we got a phenomenal team um uh this year.
• 1:05:02
SPEAKER_06: So uh really looking forward to you know what what uh the future has in store.
• 1:05:08
  SPEAKER_00: Beautiful, man.
• 1:05:09
SPEAKER_00: We'll make sure this all linked in the caption of this video.
• 1:05:11
SPEAKER_00: Perfect and great talk today.
• 1:05:13
SPEAKER_00: You know, we know that the scoreboard might tell us who won the competition, but it doesn't tell us who developed the discipline, overcame the fear, discovered the confidence, or even changed the direction of their life.
• 1:05:23
SPEAKER_00: And we know now that the true impact of a coach may not become visible until so many years later, when an athlete becomes a leader, a parent, an entrepreneur, a teacher, or a coach themselves.
• 1:05:35
SPEAKER_00: That is when we realize that we're never simply coaching a sport, we are helping shape destiny.
• 1:05:40
SPEAKER_00: Thanks for coming on today, Ian Man.
• 1:05:42
